- 00:00:04and we're going to be going over
- 00:00:05everything that i know about offsite
- 00:00:07optimization
- 00:00:08when we think about optimization when in
- 00:00:11terms of seo so to speak
- 00:00:12there's typically we're typically
- 00:00:14referring to
- 00:00:16all the knobs and levers that we can
- 00:00:18tweak
- 00:00:19in order to adjust things so google
- 00:00:21likes
- 00:00:22our website most of the optimization
- 00:00:25levers are on the on-site so
- 00:00:27that that's when you're referring to
- 00:00:29stuff like okay internal linking
- 00:00:31word count or optimizing different
- 00:00:35entities or adding schema there's so
- 00:00:36much to do
- 00:00:38on on-site optimization but when it
- 00:00:40comes to off-site optimization
- 00:00:42aside from which links you're building
- 00:00:44the only really
- 00:00:46tweak that you have the only lever that
- 00:00:48you have is the anchor text you send
- 00:00:50with the link
- 00:00:51and so it becomes really important if
- 00:00:52you want your site to rank
- 00:00:54quickly and effectively from an off-site
- 00:00:56perspective you need to have the
- 00:00:58thoughts
- 00:00:58about your anchor text so in case you've

- 00:01:05what i'm doing today is i basically
- 00:01:08looked at our entire process we're
- 00:01:09selecting anchor text
- 00:01:11at both of my agencies authority
- 00:01:12builders and lead spring
- 00:01:14and i put them together in a visual
- 00:01:16presentation and
- 00:01:18also really brainstormed out what are
- 00:01:20the things that
- 00:01:21i haven't even thought of before the
- 00:01:22things that i haven't written down
- 00:01:24before all these little
- 00:01:25tricks and and hacks that i put together
- 00:01:28throughout the years and
- 00:01:29to deliver them in a webinar for you
- 00:01:30guys today so
- 00:01:32why you should stick around for the

- 00:02:10so the webinar goals what i want to
- 00:02:12accomplish today for you guys is just to
- 00:02:14show you how anchor text selection
- 00:02:16can make or break your backlinking
- 00:02:18efforts and i
- 00:02:19don't i'm not exaggerating here it's
- 00:02:22it's easy to do anchor text
- 00:02:23right but it's also very easy to do it
- 00:02:25wrong and when you do it wrong you could
- 00:02:27end up with
- 00:02:28an algorithmic penalty that happens
- 00:02:30quite common and then even worse would
- 00:02:32be
- 00:02:32a manual penalty for a natural lynx and
- 00:02:35i'll talk about
- 00:02:36my experiences and running a manual
- 00:02:39penalty recovery
- 00:02:40service and all the horror stories we
- 00:02:42see quite often
- 00:02:44that have to do with anchor text number
- 00:02:47two what i want to do is give you a
- 00:02:48repeatable process for selecting anchors
- 00:02:50so i want to just give you
- 00:02:51a structure and a process so you can do
- 00:02:53it effectively and not get yourself into
- 00:02:55trouble
- 00:02:56and then lastly lastly answer the
- 00:02:58questions you don't even know you have
- 00:02:59about anchor text so this is where my
- 00:03:01brainstorm comes into play and i've
- 00:03:02thought about all the things that
- 00:03:04people might not even know that they
- 00:03:06have and we'll get that
- 00:03:08going throughout this webinar so how i'm
- 00:03:10going to accomplish that
- 00:03:11here's my agenda so first for the
- 00:03:13beginners if you don't know what the
- 00:03:15hell i've been talking about this whole
- 00:03:16time what is an anchor text we're going
- 00:03:17to be
- 00:03:18going back and discussing what it is and
- 00:03:20then why
- 00:03:21why anchor text is so critical like
- 00:03:23what's why would i be
- 00:03:25putting together entire presentations
- 00:03:27and speaking on it
- 00:03:28um if it wasn't critical so let's
- 00:03:30establish why it's so important
- 00:03:32and then i'll be getting into the lead
- 00:03:34spring and authority builder's anchor
- 00:03:35tech selection process so
- 00:03:37this is the quote unquote giving out the
- 00:03:39farm part
- 00:03:40and then as uh appreciation for
- 00:03:44coming on this webinar and taking time
- 00:03:45out of your day i always like to give
- 00:03:47out some free stuff so
- 00:03:48we've put together something nice it's a
- 00:03:51it's a free analysis um
- 00:03:52basically the process that we're going
- 00:03:54to be showing you or i'm going to be
- 00:03:55showing you
- 00:03:56that we do at lead spring and authority

- 00:04:21we haven't met before
- 00:04:22my name is matt born in fresno
- 00:04:24california when i was there our claim to
- 00:04:27fame was
- 00:04:28the highest per capita grand theft auto
- 00:04:30in the nation hell yeah
- 00:04:32after that i went to university of
- 00:04:34california san diego to study electrical
- 00:04:37engineering and hated it i ended up
- 00:04:40working for a company out of the silicon
- 00:04:41valley
- 00:04:42developing soft developing software i

- 00:05:00buddies gave me the four hour work week
- 00:05:02in 2009 i was just
- 00:05:03ready in prime to do whatever it takes
- 00:05:05to learn how to make money on my own
- 00:05:07and the first experiments i had with
- 00:05:09making money by myself were affiliate
- 00:05:11seo and
- 00:05:12clearly i fell in love with it so about
- 00:05:152011 i
- 00:05:16sold all my crap and left the us and
- 00:05:18just started to
- 00:05:19explore my life full time as an seo
- 00:05:23this picture on the right is uh me and
- 00:05:25my yacht
- 00:05:26this is a i'm just kidding you can rent
- 00:05:28these things for like nine dollars in
- 00:05:30the south of thailand so this is where i
- 00:05:32live these days in thailand
- 00:05:34okay so um these days looks like this so
- 00:05:37i've diggity marketing this is my parent

- 00:06:23builders logo we're gonna be talking a
- 00:06:25lot about backlinks today
- 00:06:26got some people from authority builders
- 00:06:28on this call and i teach seo at the
- 00:06:30affiliate lab
- 00:06:31and i've made a conference called chiang
- 00:06:33mai seo conference that should pick up
- 00:06:35next year
- 00:06:36in 2021 as long as we get this coveted
- 00:06:38stuff under wraps
- 00:06:40so i just want to talk about why you're
- 00:06:42in good hands when it comes to anchor
- 00:06:43text
- 00:06:44rule number one is like i just mentioned
- 00:06:46i'm really into single variable testing
- 00:06:48i like to
- 00:06:48test everything before it becomes part
- 00:06:51of my process
- 00:06:52i'm still doing seo like an engineer so
- 00:06:54the way single variable tests work is
- 00:06:56you take
- 00:06:56actual websites these might be fake
- 00:06:59websites that
- 00:06:59are just used for testing or you can
- 00:07:01actually run them on real websites that
- 00:07:03rank in in high competitive search
- 00:07:06there's various ways to do this
- 00:07:07and these websites you can either have
- 00:07:10different pages and they
- 00:07:11all have a similar similar set of
- 00:07:14stimulus going to them so
- 00:07:16they might all have the same word count
- 00:07:17they might all the same
- 00:07:19optimization standards on on-site and
- 00:07:21then we would exploi
- 00:07:23apply an external variable a single
- 00:07:25variable and that's what we're trying to
- 00:07:27test so
- 00:07:27if between all these pages and between
- 00:07:30all these websites
- 00:07:31everything is the same we introduce
- 00:07:33something new then we look on the output
- 00:07:35we see
- 00:07:35okay what's happened here did we see a
- 00:07:37ranking increase or a ranking decrease
- 00:07:39and does that that would signif
- 00:07:42signify to me that this addition of this
- 00:07:45new variable
- 00:07:46this new link type this new type of
- 00:07:49optimization
- 00:07:50is a good thing for seo and ranking so
- 00:07:53an example this might be maybe we could
- 00:07:54create
- 00:07:56on the same websites 10 10 different
- 00:07:58pages and they all have
- 00:08:00again the same type of optimization
- 00:08:02standards
- 00:08:03and then we would just send 10 links to
- 00:08:05each of these
- 00:08:06and they we'd have different anchor text
- 00:08:08ratios so
- 00:08:09one of these web pages would have one
- 00:08:12target anchor text the next one would
- 00:08:13have two target anchor text we go all
- 00:08:14the way up to 10
- 00:08:15then we can see okay which one ranked
- 00:08:17the highest and that's probably the best
- 00:08:19anchor text ratio so this is interesting
- 00:08:22thing to set up there's a flaw with this
- 00:08:24test that i'll talk about later
- 00:08:26because i'll spoil the fun this is all a
- 00:08:29niche specific thing so
- 00:08:31anchor test text is niche specific but
- 00:08:33this is the kind of test you can do to
- 00:08:35actually prove that this works or not
- 00:08:38reason number two is that i built a crap
- 00:08:41ton of backlinks okay
- 00:08:42i'd like to put this slide together this
- 00:08:44is the ongoing slide that i kind of used
- 00:08:46to tally things up
- 00:08:47for my affiliate sites i've built nearly
- 00:08:4936 000 links
- 00:08:51for through my agency nearly 43 000 at
- 00:08:54authority builders we built nearly 84
- 00:08:56000 guest posts and when i used to run a
- 00:08:58pbn service nearly 55 000
- 00:09:01and the reason this is important i don't
- 00:09:03want to show off here but
- 00:09:04the reason this is important is that i
- 00:09:07like to track
- 00:09:08and see especially with these services
- 00:09:10down below authority builders and
- 00:09:12diggity links
- 00:09:13we have this process where whenever a
- 00:09:15new customer comes on board
- 00:09:17we track their progress and we get back
- 00:09:19to them if they have a rank increase
- 00:09:21because to build a relationship or
- 00:09:23you know to create a testimonial or for
- 00:09:25marketing reasons
- 00:09:26something like that so i've had my ear
- 00:09:29to the grindstone i've been watching
- 00:09:31how links perform for over six years
- 00:09:34since i've had the first service diggity
- 00:09:35links
- 00:09:36this process looks like this if a
- 00:09:37customer places a link
- 00:09:39basically we know what kind of keywords
- 00:09:41that that link or
- 00:09:43they're trying to rank for we can just
- 00:09:44look at the target page that the link
- 00:09:46was sent to
- 00:09:47and extract out what are the target
- 00:09:49keywords that this person would want to
- 00:09:50rank to it's pretty easy to do
- 00:09:52then we add them to rank tracker and we
- 00:09:54monitor over time then eventually we'll
- 00:09:56start seeing
- 00:09:57stuff like this so as long as the link
- 00:09:59was good or the anchor text was good or
- 00:10:01their website was good we can see
- 00:10:03positive ranking increases
- 00:10:04and that enables us to extract out okay
- 00:10:07what kind of anchor text is optimal to
- 00:10:09send with these kind of links or
- 00:10:11what kind of anchor text profile did
- 00:10:12they have already that set the stage for
- 00:10:14them to get these kind of gains
- 00:10:16right okay so today's focus is
- 00:10:18completely
- 00:10:19on anchor text selection so when we're
- 00:10:22building our links
- 00:10:23what is the best anchor text to use and
- 00:10:25what is the best anchor text
- 00:10:26distribution to have going to an entire
- 00:10:29page
- 00:10:29on a website so for the beginners let's
- 00:10:33talk about what is anchor text in the
- 00:10:35first place
- 00:10:36it must be pretty confused so far so
- 00:10:38let's just define it
- 00:10:39definition of anchor text this is a
- 00:10:41clickable text in a hyperlink so
- 00:10:43for example here if we had this sentence
- 00:10:46on a website
- 00:10:46read more about seo at dignity marketing
- 00:10:49dignity marketing see that's the
- 00:10:51clickable text in the hyperlink that
- 00:10:52would be considered the anchor text so
- 00:10:54the anchor text
- 00:10:55is diggity marketing in html format it
- 00:10:58looks like this so you have your ahref
- 00:11:01you give the target url close the
- 00:11:03bracket and then we have diggity mark in
- 00:11:05the anchor text and then we have the
- 00:11:07a part at the end to close the statement
- 00:11:10so in case we all are a little bit rusty
- 00:11:13on this why don't you log into your
- 00:11:14website we'll practice creating this
- 00:11:16link right now
- 00:11:17and then continue forwarding the webinar
- 00:11:18i'm just kidding
- 00:11:21all right so let's talk about why anchor
- 00:11:24text is important well
- 00:11:25it helps google figure out the topical
- 00:11:28relevance of your page so what is your
- 00:11:30page about and if you think about it
- 00:11:32what is google's job they're trying to
- 00:11:34figure out what every page is about and
- 00:11:36how to sort them based on the ranking
- 00:11:38system right so this helps them figure
- 00:11:39out the first part of that
- 00:11:41what the hell is this page about so we
- 00:11:43have a page like this this is
- 00:11:45chewy this is a page that tells cat food
- 00:11:48right
- 00:11:48and if there's a bunch of articles on
- 00:11:50the internet that are saying blah blah
- 00:11:52blah blah cat food blah blah blah
- 00:11:53and if they link to this chewy page all
- 00:11:56with the anchor text cat food
- 00:11:58then google starts to think this page is
- 00:11:59a little bit more about cat food
- 00:12:01it's super easy to understand but it's
- 00:12:04not that simple we can't just go out and
- 00:12:06build links
- 00:12:07with the target keyword of what we want
- 00:12:09to rank for over and over and over again
- 00:12:11without abandon
- 00:12:14next is a powerful link with the target
- 00:12:17anchor text is still one of the biggest
- 00:12:19ranking signals
- 00:12:20you can get now i told you guys that at
- 00:12:23diggity links at authority builders even
- 00:12:25now
- 00:12:26when when a new customer makes an order
- 00:12:28we track what they want to rank for and
- 00:12:30i can tell you with certainty the
- 00:12:32likelihood
- 00:12:33of them getting a positive ranking
- 00:12:34increase when they send a target anchor
- 00:12:36text is much higher if they send it
- 00:12:38if they send a non-target anchor text so
- 00:12:42it's a necessary evil to send the
- 00:12:43non-target anchor text but
- 00:12:45still a target anchor text link is one
- 00:12:47of the biggest ranking signals you can
- 00:12:49get if you have a page that's
- 00:12:51ranked number five six seven eight
- 00:12:53something like that if you haven't send
- 00:12:54the
- 00:12:55exact match target anchor text it's
- 00:12:56gonna move the needle as long as you
- 00:12:58send a good link
- 00:13:00so um and then another reason that's
- 00:13:03important when you get it right
- 00:13:04you can expect faster rankings so you'll
- 00:13:06rank quicker than if you're going
- 00:13:08way under optimized so to speak or over
- 00:13:11optimized
- 00:13:11for that matter you know better rankings
- 00:13:14will rank higher
- 00:13:15it's efficient use of your resources so
- 00:13:17as long as you're sending anchor text
- 00:13:18properly then your backlinks are getting
- 00:13:20their mileage you're getting their
- 00:13:21mileage out of them
- 00:13:23and then if you do it right of course
- 00:13:24there's a low chance of penalty
- 00:13:26if it looks very natural google's
- 00:13:28algorithm wouldn't be able to sort out
- 00:13:30and see that there's anything funny
- 00:13:32going on here
- 00:13:33now when you get it wrong you can just
- 00:13:35look at the converse of all these things
- 00:13:37experience you can experience slow
- 00:13:39rankings so just websites just aren't
- 00:13:41moving you're sending links you're
- 00:13:42getting gains but just really slow
- 00:13:44or sometimes even flat or negative
- 00:13:46rankings so if you keep sending
- 00:13:48target anchor text over and over again
- 00:13:49to a page hoping it's going to work you
- 00:13:51could
- 00:13:52just end up with flat rankings or start
- 00:13:54tanking the page itself
- 00:13:56so that's obviously not a good thing to
- 00:13:57do and if of course if you're getting
- 00:13:59flat
- 00:14:00rankings that's a waste of link equity
- 00:14:02you know links take
- 00:14:03time or money to build so what's the
- 00:14:06point in doing it if you're not going to
- 00:14:08get gains out of it of course
- 00:14:10and then there's extremely high chance
- 00:14:12of penalty if you do it wrong so
- 00:14:14i mentioned before i have a penalty
- 00:14:16manual penalty recovery service with

- 00:14:20penalties and i can tell you the highest
- 00:14:24cause
- 00:14:25of triggering a manual penalty is
- 00:14:28overcooking
- 00:14:29your target anchor text hands down so we
- 00:14:32see them time to time from
- 00:14:33some people build scholarship link
- 00:14:35campaigns or some other
- 00:14:36kind of uh link building campaigns that
- 00:14:39don't quite work anymore or just kind of
- 00:14:41spammy stuff but i'd say
- 00:14:42four to five times the reason that they
- 00:14:45get a manual penalty in the first place
- 00:14:46is overcooking their anchor text so
- 00:14:48really got to watch out for this and i'm
- 00:14:50going to show you how we do it
- 00:14:53so what is the overall key to anchor
- 00:14:55text
- 00:14:56just if you want to sum it up at this if
- 00:14:58you're going to take one screenshot of
- 00:14:59this entire presentation it would be
- 00:15:01this slide
- 00:15:02you want to be able to send as many
- 00:15:03keyword target anchor text
- 00:15:05as possible because those are the ones
- 00:15:06getting you the gains but
- 00:15:08you're going to temper that with
- 00:15:10maintaining a natural organic
- 00:15:12anchor text distribution so that's the
- 00:15:14main focus of this presentation how can
- 00:15:16we
- 00:15:17look super organic and look supernatural
- 00:15:19to google's
- 00:15:20penguin algorithm that's the algorithm
- 00:15:22that hunts this kind of stuff down
- 00:15:26so before we get into that i need to
- 00:15:27establish what are the different types
- 00:15:29of anchor text
- 00:15:31first i've said this before target
- 00:15:32anchor text developed by this company
- 00:15:34called target they also sell
- 00:15:36really cool stuff like legos i'm just
- 00:15:38kidding nothing to do with target but my
- 00:15:40definition of target anchor text and
- 00:15:42i've highlighted
- 00:15:43my definition there's going to be tons
- 00:15:45of definition but it doesn't matter
- 00:15:47all you need to do is stick to a
- 00:15:48convention and just stick to it that's
- 00:15:51it
- 00:15:51but my definition is any anchor text
- 00:15:53that has even a single word
- 00:15:55of the any of the target keyword phrases
- 00:15:57that you want to rank for
- 00:15:59so an example of this would be if i want
- 00:16:00to rank for best protein powder
- 00:16:02this is the target anchor text my
- 00:16:04favorite protein powder is because it
- 00:16:05has the word protein in it and powder in
- 00:16:07it
- 00:16:08this is also one just protein powder or
- 00:16:10this is one just powder
- 00:16:12or just the word best or just the word
- 00:16:14protein like any of these if it just has
- 00:16:16any kind of
- 00:16:17overlap with any kind of keyword phrases
- 00:16:19you want to rank for consider that a
- 00:16:20target anchor text and it's all about
- 00:16:22convention here you can make your own
- 00:16:24rules up
- 00:16:25but just stick to it that's all i ask so
- 00:16:28as i mentioned before target anchor text
- 00:16:30move the needle this is just what we see
- 00:16:32over and over again from building a
- 00:16:33bazillion links
- 00:16:35but the the key the thing here is if you
- 00:16:37overdo them
- 00:16:38this is how you get penalized so you got
- 00:16:40to watch out for this
- 00:16:42your other anchor texts all your
- 00:16:43non-target anchor texts are commonly
- 00:16:45known
- 00:16:46in the seo slang community as pillow
- 00:16:48anchors pillow links pillow anchors
- 00:16:51these are what we do to kind of set the
- 00:16:53stage to make things look natural is
- 00:16:55build
- 00:16:55pillow anchors and let's get into what
- 00:16:57are the various types of pillow anchors
- 00:17:00first we have branded anchor tags so
- 00:17:01some examples of these would be
- 00:17:03was just a brand so examples amazon
- 00:17:07uber tesla these are all brands of
- 00:17:09companies
- 00:17:10and they have nothing to do with
- 00:17:11keywords that they want to rank for it's
- 00:17:13just brand name right
- 00:17:15and we have another fictional brand
- 00:17:16actually i don't even know if this is
- 00:17:17fictional but i'm using it
- 00:17:19as an example in the rest of this
- 00:17:20webinar to kind of illustrate some
- 00:17:22points so
- 00:17:23muscle factory right then we have
- 00:17:25dignity marketing if you look at the
- 00:17:27anchor text going to my website diggity
- 00:17:29marking is the most frequent one so
- 00:17:31dignity marketing is a brand anchor text
- 00:17:33and typically
- 00:17:35the most frequent anchor text that's
- 00:17:37sent to a website or web page
- 00:17:39is brand anchor text another variation
- 00:17:41would be
- 00:17:42the author of the website so matt
- 00:17:44diggety that's my second most used
- 00:17:46anchor text matt diggety and that's also
- 00:17:48a branded anchor
- 00:17:50so here's a caveat it's branded only if
- 00:17:52it doesn't contain a keyword so
- 00:17:54some some example or one example is if
- 00:17:57we have this
- 00:17:58keyword best protein powder right we
- 00:18:01have a url muscle factory and if i send
- 00:18:03the
- 00:18:03anchor text muscle factory to this
- 00:18:05website of course that's a branded
- 00:18:07anchor because it doesn't have any
- 00:18:08overlap
- 00:18:09with the keywords best in protein powder
- 00:18:12but a url or a website called
- 00:18:14protein shop anytime you're sending
- 00:18:16protein shop
- 00:18:17as an anchor text to any kind of best
- 00:18:19protein powder page consider it a target
- 00:18:21anchor text and
- 00:18:22just follow this convention for me
- 00:18:24please
- 00:18:26now we have url anchor text so this
- 00:18:27would be all variations of muscle
- 00:18:29factory https version
- 00:18:31um no www and musclefactory.com
- 00:18:35here's another variation so i've slapped
- 00:18:37on the www
- 00:18:38here's another variation i've taken off
- 00:18:40https and i put a backslash
- 00:18:42forward slash at the end here's a very
- 00:18:44clean one just musclefactory.com
- 00:18:46and so forth i believe there's 16
- 00:18:48variations of this or something like
- 00:18:50that
- 00:18:52now we have topical anchor text so just
- 00:18:54think
- 00:18:55one category level up of what you're
- 00:18:58trying to rank for here so if we use the
- 00:19:00best protein powder example that could
- 00:19:03be fitness so fitness is a category
- 00:19:05above protein powder
- 00:19:07or supplements of course or bodybuilding
- 00:19:09so these would be topical anchor text
- 00:19:12and then we have miscellaneous anchor
- 00:19:14text you guys have seen these a lot
- 00:19:16we have read more click here this
- 00:19:17article blah blah blah
- 00:19:19and then in anchor text this is just
- 00:19:22like whatever
- 00:19:23whatever else we can't really classify
- 00:19:25so some examples of this would be
- 00:19:27if you have missing anchor text so this
- 00:19:29usually comes from images that are
- 00:19:31linking to your website
- 00:19:32and they haven't filled out the alt tag
- 00:19:34parameters so this would be
- 00:19:36no text that's how it looks in ahrefs
- 00:19:38another one might be just gibberish
- 00:19:40these like from scraper sites just
- 00:19:41doesn't make any sense at all
- 00:19:42or maybe foreign words that's what you
- 00:19:44would lump into n a right
- 00:19:47i'd like better so what is anchor text
- 00:19:50distribution also i've also said this
- 00:19:52earlier
- 00:19:53so this definition is it's your page
- 00:19:56specific blend of anchor text coming
- 00:19:58into a single page so
- 00:20:00it's not a site-wide thing it's not your
- 00:20:03overall
- 00:20:04website anchor text distribution is
- 00:20:05calculated on a per page basis so
- 00:20:07let's say i have a page that's trying to
- 00:20:09rank for protein powder best protein
- 00:20:11powder so this page might have
- 00:20:1325 target anchor text 35 brand
- 00:20:1620 url 15 miscellaneous and five percent
- 00:20:20n a so that would be my anchor text
- 00:20:22distribution the overall pitch you're
- 00:20:24going here
- 00:20:25and this is what determines your success
- 00:20:27at anchor over optimization or anchor
- 00:20:29optimization in general
- 00:20:31so this these particular ratios will
- 00:20:33determine if you rank fast or rank slow
- 00:20:36or get penalized
- 00:20:36etc so the goals here what you want to
- 00:20:39do is you want to look diverse and
- 00:20:40natural you want to have a distribution
- 00:20:42that looks realistic
- 00:20:43to happen in the real world google just
- 00:20:46doesn't want you to build your own links
- 00:20:48so
- 00:20:48i know that's a fable and like pretty
- 00:20:51much anyone in any kind of competitive
- 00:20:53niche builds their own links
- 00:20:54so when you're building them yourself
- 00:20:56you need to make the
- 00:20:58effort to make them look natural right
- 00:21:00and then your second goal is obviously
- 00:21:02to be effective and
- 00:21:03make sure you're ranking as fast as
- 00:21:04possible by sending an appropriate
- 00:21:06amount of target anchor text
- 00:21:09so how do we determine the optimal
- 00:21:11anchor text distribution
- 00:21:13right let's first talk about how not to
- 00:21:15do it so this is
- 00:21:17there's no magical anchor text
- 00:21:19distribution that applies to every niche
- 00:21:21so
- 00:21:21i don't see this that much anymore but
- 00:21:23you know like
- 00:21:24earlier maybe five six years ago you
- 00:21:27would always see
- 00:21:28just this one size fit all fits all
- 00:21:31anchor text distribution that people
- 00:21:32would
- 00:21:33were recommending in their backlinking
- 00:21:34guides and generic places on the
- 00:21:36internet right so they always look like
- 00:21:38this
- 00:21:3910 target anchor text 50 brand
- 00:21:4220 url 15 misc and 5
- 00:21:46na this is just this someone made this
- 00:21:48up someday it made sense to other people
- 00:21:50start copying it and just like ah that's
- 00:21:52what what probably looks natural right
- 00:21:54this is right this this doesn't
- 00:21:56exist in the real world
- 00:21:57i mean i mean sure it exists
- 00:21:59coincidentally but it doesn't exist in
- 00:22:01every niche so
- 00:22:02what you're looking for is a niche
- 00:22:03specific one based on
- 00:22:05who's ranking already so reverse
- 00:22:07engineering the people that are already
- 00:22:09ranking the top positions
- 00:22:11looking at their distributions and
- 00:22:13creating that
- 00:22:14for your niche itself so this is how you
- 00:22:17do it
- 00:22:17the thing about google these days and
- 00:22:20i'm sure a lot of people agree with this
- 00:22:22is it's like playing poker
- 00:22:24but you can see your opponent's hands
- 00:22:26like the people that are ranked in
- 00:22:28positions one two and three
- 00:22:29you're playing poker against these guys
- 00:22:30but they're they're playing with these
- 00:22:32their cards
- 00:22:33shown backwards right so what we can do
- 00:22:35in regards to anchor text is we can use
- 00:22:37backlink tools to see what anchors our
- 00:22:39competition
- 00:22:40use to rank already and then take the
- 00:22:43average of what they did in order to
- 00:22:45figure out what we need to do right
- 00:22:47super easy to understand and here's how
- 00:22:49to do it first
- 00:22:50i use ahrefs for this kind of thing so
- 00:22:52you type in site explorer
- 00:22:54and you type in the url one of your
- 00:22:56competitors so this guy's probably
- 00:22:58ranked first for best vitamin c
- 00:23:00serum right and then we can see here in
- 00:23:02the anchor text right
- 00:23:03they have this first anchor text amazing
- 00:23:05vitamin c serums what kind of anchor
- 00:23:07text is that
- 00:23:08according to my definition this is a
- 00:23:09target anchor text they have three
- 00:23:11referring domains so let's add
- 00:23:13three to this target anchor text bucket
- 00:23:16here's a url anchor text so let's say
- 00:23:18they got two of those
- 00:23:20here's another anchor text so add two
- 00:23:22more so now we have a total of five
- 00:23:23target anchor text
- 00:23:25and so forth just keep going down the
- 00:23:26list right until we figure out the
- 00:23:28distribution
- 00:23:30so it kind of looks like this so the
- 00:23:31process is we're going to figure out the
- 00:23:33anchor text distribution for site number
- 00:23:35one so
- 00:23:36let's say for this keyword selling my
- 00:23:37car how to sell my car online sell my
- 00:23:39car online
- 00:23:40site number one the first position is 30
- 00:23:43targets
- 00:23:4425 url 40 n a that's a ridiculous amount
- 00:23:47of n a
- 00:23:48and then percent miscellaneous then you
- 00:23:50continue forward and you do it for sites
- 00:23:52two three
- 00:23:53four five if you want to be more
- 00:23:56succinct about it
- 00:23:57sometimes we do sites one two and three
- 00:23:59but if you wanna be super nerd level on
- 00:24:01it
- 00:24:01go sites one through five then what you
- 00:24:04do is you take the average so you see
- 00:24:06here between sites one through five
- 00:24:08the average target anchor text spread
- 00:24:10over these guys is 31
- 00:24:11the average url 24 and so forth and you
- 00:24:14can see
- 00:24:15here this target anchor text average is
- 00:24:1731. it has nothing to do with this
- 00:24:19generic 10
- 00:24:20target anchor text that used to be the
- 00:24:22case five years ago in
- 00:24:23seo so it's niche very niche specific
- 00:24:26right
- 00:24:27so now that you have the map the whole
- 00:24:29goal here is how to get from a to b
- 00:24:30so this is my current situation what do
- 00:24:33i need to do to hit
- 00:24:35this kind of anchor text distribution
- 00:24:37and i can just see from eyeballing it
- 00:24:38right here so
- 00:24:39we have six percent na acres and this
- 00:24:41has 16
- 00:24:42just probably focusing on these guys for
- 00:24:44the short term would be
- 00:24:46the best course of action to rank in
- 00:24:48this niche right
- 00:24:51okay so some best practices here so
- 00:24:53there's definitely some pitfalls and
- 00:24:54some things you need to look out for
- 00:24:56anchor distribution i mentioned this
- 00:24:58before anchor text distribution
- 00:25:00is solved on a per page basis which
- 00:25:02means
- 00:25:03if you have a super well balanced home
- 00:25:04page that has 100 brand anchor text
- 00:25:08that means nothing for your inner page
- 00:25:10that is overcooked
- 00:25:11it's not a overall holistic website
- 00:25:14based thing
- 00:25:15anchor text distribution and the penguin
- 00:25:17algorithm is run on a per page basis
- 00:25:20next you want to choose the main keyword
- 00:25:22you want to rank for to do this reverse
- 00:25:24engineering analysis so
- 00:25:25yes i want to rank for best protein
- 00:25:27powder no i don't want to rank for
- 00:25:28protein powder it's a different search
- 00:25:30intent it's an e-commerce search intent
- 00:25:32so i would reverse engineer best protein
- 00:25:34powder exactly
- 00:25:37after that let's ignore our mega
- 00:25:39authority sites that are ranking with
- 00:25:40just a few links so if i'm up against
- 00:25:43webmd for best bet best protein powder
- 00:25:46then i'm not going to reverse engineer
- 00:25:48them if they only have two links because
- 00:25:50they're probably two target anchor texts
- 00:25:52and i don't want a 100 target anchor
- 00:25:55text
- 00:25:56website to mess up my average ratios so
- 00:25:58just ignore these guys and move on
- 00:26:01and then i also mentioned this before
- 00:26:03stick to your convention
- 00:26:05as you can see if i'm defining a target
- 00:26:08anchor texas one thing when it comes to
- 00:26:09my sites but
- 00:26:10site number two and three i'm defining
- 00:26:12it something else it's going to mess you
- 00:26:14up so just stick to your convention
- 00:26:16you can decide that target anchor text
- 00:26:18has a completely different
- 00:26:19definition for you but just stick to it
- 00:26:21and you'll get the job done
- 00:26:24all right so why not just let this
- 00:26:26happen naturally if the whole goal is to
- 00:26:28look
- 00:26:28natural then why not just let it happen
- 00:26:31naturally well
- 00:26:32first off if you're listening to this
- 00:26:33webinar most likely your professional
- 00:26:36seo and you don't ignore link building
- 00:26:38anyway so if you're not ignoring link
- 00:26:39building they're not doing anything
- 00:26:40naturally
- 00:26:41and thus the links that you're placing
- 00:26:43you're controlling their anchor text i
- 00:26:45would think
- 00:26:46second is optimal anchor text might
- 00:26:49happen naturally that would depend on
- 00:26:52the optimal anchor text just
- 00:26:54randomly people on the internet just
- 00:26:56decide like why would they
- 00:26:58randomly just be able to hit your niche
- 00:27:00specific target anchor text that might
- 00:27:02happen naturally
- 00:27:03so the goal here is just why leave that
- 00:27:05up chance if if you can control
- 00:27:06something
- 00:27:08and you can control the fate of your
- 00:27:09website and how well it ranks
- 00:27:11why would you just let it happen
- 00:27:12naturally anyways
- 00:27:14okay so let's take a pause real quick i

- 00:28:10and birdie so to determine the link gap
- 00:28:12this is the
- 00:28:13how many links you need to build in
- 00:28:15order to compete with these guys
- 00:28:17so if we look at site number one rank
- 00:28:19and style they have
- 00:28:20various links in each category so in
- 00:28:23this dr
- 00:28:24domain rating 20 to 30 range they built
- 00:28:26four links
- 00:28:27in 31 to 40 range they built five links
- 00:28:29and 41 to 50 links they built three
- 00:28:31and so forth so we do the same for sites
- 00:28:34two and three
- 00:28:34then we compute an average so this is
- 00:28:36very similar to
- 00:28:38anchor text analysis we're competing an
- 00:28:39average here and then
- 00:28:41i can see what's my situation so my
- 00:28:43website i want to rank for best curling
- 00:28:45iron
- 00:28:45i got this kind of distribution going on
- 00:28:47so i got two links here one link in this
- 00:28:49category
- 00:28:50and then we can just compute the
- 00:28:51difference so these are the links that
- 00:28:52you need to build
- 00:28:53in each power level in order to compete
- 00:28:55with these guys
- 00:28:57so just like with anchor text there are
- 00:28:59some pitfalls here so
- 00:29:00one is you have to consider the domain
- 00:29:02rating because
- 00:29:04essentially a link or a website that's
- 00:29:07ranked with a dr80 so that has a huge
- 00:29:10huge chunk of authority right you won't
- 00:29:13be able to build just three links to
- 00:29:15compete with that if it had three
- 00:29:16three links going to it those three
- 00:29:18links are much more powerful than your
- 00:29:20three links on your dr20 website so you
- 00:29:22need to multiply
- 00:29:23this link gap by the scaling factor the
- 00:29:25equation's
- 00:29:26tiny bit complicated because it uh dr is
- 00:29:28an exponential
- 00:29:30scale so we we get we can help you out
- 00:29:32with that just don't worry about that
- 00:29:34we've got the equations worked out and
- 00:29:35everything so we'll be able to figure
- 00:29:37out the link gap and
- 00:29:38apply that scaling factor to get you
- 00:29:40sorted out also you don't want to count
- 00:29:42nofollow links so nofollow doesn't
- 00:29:44contribute to any of these calculations
- 00:29:46or anything like that
- 00:29:48another thing that i didn't mention here
- 00:29:49but you want to worry about black
- 00:29:51sheeping
- 00:29:51your page black sheeping is let's say
- 00:29:54everyone on page one
- 00:29:55is able to rank with three four or five
- 00:29:57links because they have a high authority
- 00:29:58you have a low authority so your your
- 00:30:01calculations show that you need to build
- 00:30:0320 links so
- 00:30:04i'm gonna make sure you don't do that
- 00:30:05anytime you're the only weirdo on page
- 00:30:07one with 20 links and everyone has three
- 00:30:09you're gonna have a hard time ranking
- 00:30:10above them

- 00:33:08when they just got on board with us they
- 00:33:10weren't doing much at all but five
- 00:33:11thousand
- 00:33:12seven hundred and ninety two percent
- 00:33:13traffic increase i think this client's
- 00:33:15pretty happy
- 00:33:16and then this also works in local seo so
- 00:33:18in uk
- 00:33:19in london you can see in the keywords
- 00:33:21here i've i didn't cover
- 00:33:22the london part of it this is obviously
- 00:33:24the most competitive
- 00:33:26keyword in the uk and no slouch on the
- 00:33:29search volume either 5400 searches per
- 00:33:31month
- 00:33:32and this site's cooking pretty well it's
- 00:33:34really starting to pick up and this
- 00:33:35client's happy as well
- 00:33:37we also do white labeling too because
- 00:33:39because we do all the analysis
- 00:33:41and because we uh like figure out
- 00:33:44everything for you
- 00:33:45like a lot of agencies like to just
- 00:33:48outsource all the link building to us
- 00:33:49because they get these nice reports that
- 00:33:51they can give to these clients
- 00:33:52and our links are good and we get
- 00:33:53results like these all the time

- 00:34:16you don't have to focus on one single
- 00:34:18page at a time and laser target
- 00:34:20the link gap and the anchor text but you
- 00:34:22can just we can build links
- 00:34:24overall to your entire site so this
- 00:34:26customer reported you went from
- 00:34:27dr 18 to 32 in a month and as you can
- 00:34:30see the overall traffic on the website
- 00:34:32is increasing just by growing
- 00:34:34growing the overall authority so
- 00:34:37again to book this just go to

- 00:34:57now we'll get into anchor text mastery
- 00:35:00so this is
- 00:35:0111 techniques to level up your anchor
- 00:35:03text there's a lot of
- 00:35:05i gave you the structure but i didn't
- 00:35:06give you the details on
- 00:35:08okay you told me i need to build this
- 00:35:09many target anchor texts based on the
- 00:35:11competition well
- 00:35:12what actual target anchor text should i
- 00:35:14build you know what should i just use my
- 00:35:16exact match anchor text over and over
- 00:35:18we'll get into all that stuff right now
- 00:35:20so rule number one is never use a target
- 00:35:23anchor text more than once
- 00:35:25if i'm trying to rank for dog training
- 00:35:27instead of just spamming so
- 00:35:29if all five of my target anchor texts
- 00:35:31the dog training
- 00:35:32that looks super unnatural let's vary
- 00:35:34that up instead of dog training over and
- 00:35:36over again i'm burying up with dog
- 00:35:38training once
- 00:35:39and then training for dogs great dog
- 00:35:40training dog training tips
- 00:35:42tips dog obedient training all this kind
- 00:35:45of stuff
- 00:35:45so just variate it up remember
- 00:35:47naturalness is the key
- 00:35:48like how likely would five independent
- 00:35:51people
- 00:35:52that consist of your entire target
- 00:35:54anchor text profile
- 00:35:56linked with the exact same anchor so mix
- 00:35:59it up and you're going to get
- 00:36:00not only a safer result but a better
- 00:36:02result
- 00:36:03i do from time to time send exact match
- 00:36:06target anchor text
- 00:36:07twice so that's just in certain cases if
- 00:36:10i know i'm sending a bunch of links
- 00:36:12i would send dog training exactly twice
- 00:36:15but when there's a low amount of links
- 00:36:16the likelihood of
- 00:36:17this exact thing coming in twice the
- 00:36:19statistics are very low
- 00:36:22rule number two is leverage the seo
- 00:36:24title tag so what is the seo title tag
- 00:36:26so when you're looking at the google
- 00:36:27search result
- 00:36:28this is the part at the top this is a
- 00:36:30clickable link this is also
- 00:36:31known as your meta title your seo title
- 00:36:33tag etc
- 00:36:34this is usually something you set with
- 00:36:37your yoast or
- 00:36:38all-in-one rank math whatever you got
- 00:36:40your seo plugin so
- 00:36:42set the title here now this is a very
- 00:36:46very
- 00:36:46common natural anchor type so if we look
- 00:36:48at digital marketing's anchor text
- 00:36:50profile you can see that
- 00:36:52i've two title tag anchor texts that are
- 00:36:54coming up a lot
- 00:36:55how to properly track and manage
- 00:36:57backlinks so that's one article that
- 00:36:58i've written
- 00:36:59and another one how to steal the
- 00:37:01featured snippet in three steps it's
- 00:37:02another article i've written
- 00:37:04and they each have 10 referring domains
- 00:37:06with this exact match or
- 00:37:08this title tag anchor text so it's a
- 00:37:10very common natural
- 00:37:11type and when you're building links on
- 00:37:14forums not that i
- 00:37:15recommend this but just this is just an
- 00:37:17anecdotal story
- 00:37:18a lot of times when you build a link on
- 00:37:20a forum it's going to default your
- 00:37:21anchor text to the title tag of the page
- 00:37:24that's linking to
- 00:37:25anyway so it's very very common so feel
- 00:37:28free to use this one more than once to
- 00:37:30get target anchor text in as you can see
- 00:37:32this these are natural links like i
- 00:37:33didn't build any links like this
- 00:37:35these came in naturally so if anything
- 00:37:37happens naturally that's what you can
- 00:37:38use
- 00:37:39more than once rule number three is you
- 00:37:42want to match the anchor text with the
- 00:37:44link type so
- 00:37:45various link types depending on where
- 00:37:46they're placed in a website
- 00:37:48more commonly have different anchor
- 00:37:50texts occurring within them
- 00:37:51so if we think about blog articles right
- 00:37:55any article that's written about a
- 00:37:57certain topic whatever
- 00:37:59most of the time they're referencing
- 00:38:00something that their readers need more
- 00:38:02information on so
- 00:38:04we were able to find the best ping pong
- 00:38:07table
- 00:38:08here at this website ping pong pros
- 00:38:10right
- 00:38:11so there's a couple different anchor
- 00:38:12text opportunities in that sentence
- 00:38:14we were able to find best ping pong
- 00:38:17table so that's a target anchor text
- 00:38:18that they could have used to refer their
- 00:38:20reader to find the best ping pong tables
- 00:38:22the latter part of the sentence says at
- 00:38:25pingpongpros.com so that could be
- 00:38:27a brand right so that's a brand anchor
- 00:38:29text that's a bad example because
- 00:38:31the brand has target keywords in there
- 00:38:33but you get what i'm talking about right
- 00:38:35so target and brand seems to show up a
- 00:38:37lot in blog articles
- 00:38:39and then we have linked lists which
- 00:38:40could also show up in a blog article so
- 00:38:42this would be like a
- 00:38:43numbered list or a reference section at
- 00:38:45the bottom
- 00:38:46or here's what my top 10 favorite blogs
- 00:38:49regarding seo or anything like that so
- 00:38:51typically in these linked lists you're
- 00:38:52looking at brand anchor text so
- 00:38:54i like backlinko i like dignity
- 00:38:56marketing i like nathan koch like you're
- 00:38:58just listing out the brands right
- 00:39:00or you can just give the url anchor text
- 00:39:03over and over again it's a linked list
- 00:39:04it's common for
- 00:39:05url anchor text sidebars typically these
- 00:39:08are going to be some kind of image so
- 00:39:11you're getting an image to check out
- 00:39:13someone's banner ad or something like
- 00:39:14that
- 00:39:15so a lot of times they're using topical
- 00:39:16anchor text here or just straight up
- 00:39:18empty so any anchor text forms
- 00:39:21url or seo title comes up a lot and blog
- 00:39:23comments if you're into that sort of
- 00:39:25thing
- 00:39:25most of the time you're going to be
- 00:39:26using a name so that's going to be brand
- 00:39:28anchor text right
- 00:39:30rule number four is to break up your
- 00:39:32keyword phrase so if i'm trying to rank
- 00:39:33for plumber in chicago
- 00:39:35instead of just keeping on spamming
- 00:39:37plumber in chicago plumber in chicago
- 00:39:39over again
- 00:39:39or chicago plumber any of these kind of
- 00:39:41variations try doing something like this
- 00:39:43just send
- 00:39:44plumber or just send chicago
- 00:39:47why does this work because i have no
- 00:39:49idea like a lot of this stuff i have no
- 00:39:51idea what it works but i'm
- 00:39:53constantly testing and tracking and this
- 00:39:54is just something i've found when i
- 00:39:56start to get stuck
- 00:39:57sending links if i just break up that
- 00:39:58phrase as long as i can send more target
- 00:40:00anchor text just try
- 00:40:02sending the single word rule number five
- 00:40:05is to always
- 00:40:06write in english oh my god i see this so
- 00:40:09often
- 00:40:10with the link building services that
- 00:40:11i've run in the past uh so anchor text
- 00:40:14always needs to work properly in a
- 00:40:15sentence think about this we're trying
- 00:40:17to look natural
- 00:40:18if i want to place a certain anchor text
- 00:40:20and there's no way that
- 00:40:21anchor text would work in a sentence
- 00:40:23that's not natural right
- 00:40:25so plumber chicago right how would this
- 00:40:28possibly work in a sentence
- 00:40:30i found a plumber chicago last week that
- 00:40:33was great
- 00:40:34no doesn't work in a sentence how about
- 00:40:36this one plumber in chicago that works
- 00:40:38in a sentence
- 00:40:38but why would you ever not capitalize
- 00:40:40the word chicago right
- 00:40:42it's a proper noun so yes plumber in
- 00:40:45chicago that works in a sentence get
- 00:40:46your english and your grammar correct
- 00:40:49rule number six use brand and target
- 00:40:51anchor text this is a
- 00:40:52combination anchor text i don't define
- 00:40:54its own category because there's no need
- 00:40:57but this is a very common anchor type it
- 00:41:00you can you can use this for target
- 00:41:02anchor text so if we see for example
- 00:41:03this is
- 00:41:04an amazon page they're selling diffusers
- 00:41:06something like that you can see how
- 00:41:07often these
- 00:41:08they got their brand in here and they're
- 00:41:10using target anchor text as well the
- 00:41:12diffuser aromatherapy as well so it's a
- 00:41:14very common one that comes up
- 00:41:17rule number seven you want to diversify
- 00:41:20your url anchors this is very
- 00:41:22similar to what i was mentioning for
- 00:41:24target anchor text so what are
- 00:41:26what are the odds that 100 of
- 00:41:28independent people that are supposedly
- 00:41:29linking to you
- 00:41:30on the internet are only using their url
- 00:41:33anchor that looks exactly like this
- 00:41:35https www no trailing slash at the end
- 00:41:40so mix this up nearly zero percent
- 00:41:42chance
- 00:41:43of 100 independent people doing that so
- 00:41:45mix it up
- 00:41:46your your url category should have
- 00:41:48diversity within itself
- 00:41:52rule number eight so incorporate long
- 00:41:54anchor phrases so
- 00:41:56seo is going to do it like this i want
- 00:41:58to rank for plumber in chicago in
- 00:41:59chicago plumber and plumber in chicago
- 00:42:00illinois
- 00:42:01so those are the anchor texts i'm going
- 00:42:02to send over and over again
- 00:42:04but often in the natural world you might
- 00:42:07get
- 00:42:08long phrase anchor text coming up so
- 00:42:10something like
- 00:42:11we found a highly recommended plumber in
- 00:42:13the metropoli metropolitan chicago area
- 00:42:16by checking out this website like you
- 00:42:18could be used highlighting that whole
- 00:42:19phrase that's in these quotes right here
- 00:42:21or this plumber based just south of
- 00:42:23downtown chicago or this chicago plumber
- 00:42:26i found recently on yelp did the job
- 00:42:28something like that just mix it up rule
- 00:42:32number nine
- 00:42:32synonyms are an absolute cheat code all
- 00:42:35right so
- 00:42:36when you're maxing out on target anchor
- 00:42:38text so let's say i've hit the cap i'm
- 00:42:40supposed to be able to spend
- 00:42:41ascend 35 i've hit 35 right
- 00:42:45use lsi keywords or synonymous entities
- 00:42:47whatever you want to call it
- 00:42:48instead and this is easily determined
- 00:42:50with the google search so
- 00:42:52if i want to rank for how to sell a car
- 00:42:54online and i've
- 00:42:55already sent all the targeting checks i
- 00:42:57can so
- 00:42:59one thing i can do is just substitute
- 00:43:01the word to substitute the word car with
- 00:43:03the synonym so i can type in
- 00:43:05how to sell automobile online and you
- 00:43:07can see here
- 00:43:08google has actually bolded the synonyms
- 00:43:11auto
- 00:43:12cars and vehicle these are all what they
- 00:43:14consider to be synonyms so
- 00:43:16now i can go to town sending synonyms to
- 00:43:18the page i can just send the word
- 00:43:19automobile
- 00:43:20or automobile auction or whatever
- 00:43:24automobile websites
- 00:43:25for e-commerce or anything like that to
- 00:43:28get some synonyms
- 00:43:29in our anchor text profile the awesome
- 00:43:31thing about this is you get
- 00:43:32credit as if it was a target anchor text
- 00:43:35but you don't risk over-optimization
- 00:43:38rule number 10 when you have to send
- 00:43:40these necessary evil
- 00:43:42pillow anchor texts these non-target
- 00:43:44anchor texts you can surround them with
- 00:43:46target anchor
- 00:43:46or target keywords in order to give them
- 00:43:49a little bit more power so
- 00:43:50pillow and anchors are necessary evil we
- 00:43:53have to build them in order to
- 00:43:54create a natural linking distribution
- 00:43:58but give them a little bit more power by
- 00:44:00surrounding them with keywords in your
- 00:44:02placement so
- 00:44:02example this is we found an excellent
- 00:44:04list of this year's
- 00:44:06best laptops under 500 that's the
- 00:44:08keyword i'd want to rank for
- 00:44:09at techreview.com so i have to send a
- 00:44:12branded anchor text but it's very close
- 00:44:14to the keyword i want to rank for
- 00:44:17now rule number 11 since the last and
- 00:44:19final rule if you mess up
- 00:44:22removing and replacing links is much
- 00:44:24much better and faster than diluting
- 00:44:27your link profile so
- 00:44:28let me just think of the scenario right
- 00:44:31let's say
- 00:44:31you have a hundred links going to a page
- 00:44:33and 40 of them are target anchor text
- 00:44:36you want to be 20 target anchor text so
- 00:44:38you need to
- 00:44:40get this down you need to fix this ratio
- 00:44:42how many links do you think it will take
- 00:44:44to dilute your link profile in order to
- 00:44:46get 20 percent
- 00:44:47that's right 100 more links it would
- 00:44:50take you a hundred links
- 00:44:51to fix this ratio so the answer here is
- 00:44:54just remove and replace i'm sure you
- 00:44:55have some of these links that
- 00:44:57you're not that proud of something you
- 00:44:59built three years ago that
- 00:45:00didn't have the same same standards that
- 00:45:02you used today so go ahead and get those
- 00:45:04removed
- 00:45:05disavowed whatever and then you start to
- 00:45:06replace your
- 00:45:08fixing your ratios will be light years
- 00:45:10faster than dilution of course

- 00:46:30the websites the web pages with the most
- 00:46:33page rank
- 00:46:34so ideally the ones that have the most
- 00:46:36links going to them
- 00:46:38so that's the ideal situation are
- 00:46:40alternately
- 00:46:41like you can get your highest dr links
- 00:46:44with your target anchor text because
- 00:46:46you're getting a lot of page rank from
- 00:46:47the internal
- 00:46:48linking on that kind of website that
- 00:46:50said i don't like to commit to anything
- 00:46:51that i've been tested recently but i've
- 00:46:53kept up that strategy the whole time
- 00:46:55but it's probably time to test that
- 00:46:56again i'm sure it still works but
- 00:46:58i'm not sure

- 00:47:14both nofollow and do follow links as

- 00:48:07types of links you would use for your
- 00:48:09tier two would be high page rank
- 00:48:11type links which is typically pbns
- 00:48:14now everyone that we work with at
- 00:48:16authority builders
- 00:48:18is someone we consider our partner so
- 00:48:20these websites that exist on the
- 00:48:21internet these are our partners so i
- 00:48:23can't
- 00:48:23with consciousness uh with with good
- 00:48:26conscious
- 00:48:27uh recommend that you build links to our
- 00:48:29customers but
- 00:48:30that is the protocol that most people
- 00:48:32use
- 00:48:35okay brand has a question about
- 00:48:38anchor text for
- 00:48:42local seo and specifically press release
- 00:48:46what kind of anchor texts would you use
- 00:48:48for press releases
- 00:48:50would you target inner pages i'm not
- 00:48:54very bullish at all on press releases
- 00:48:58unless they're of a certain quality so i
- 00:49:00kind of categorize them as
- 00:49:02we have our press releases that are 100
- 00:49:04200
- 00:49:06and for the most part the way these
- 00:49:08things get syndicated
- 00:49:09is they're going to like a lot of uh you
- 00:49:11know like local news sites and like
- 00:49:14kfsr whatever like these random like
- 00:49:16radio stations
- 00:49:17that have news sites and stuff like that
- 00:49:19and for the most part i'm thinking that
- 00:49:20they get ignored i haven't seen much
- 00:49:22gain from them in quite some time
- 00:49:24but you're uh like the the second level
- 00:49:28of this is considered digital pr which
- 00:49:30you would go out you would create a
- 00:49:31viral story something that's
- 00:49:33very shareable and very interesting to
- 00:49:36high-level news sites
- 00:49:37and then you're getting placed on
- 00:49:38websites like fox news nbc and stuff
- 00:49:40like that so
- 00:49:41if we're talking about pr then i would
- 00:49:43definitely recommend the latter
- 00:49:45and for the anchor text that you would
- 00:49:47use you definitely want to go to with
- 00:49:48either branded or url anchor text
- 00:49:51because you'll definitely overcook your
- 00:49:53website but
- 00:49:54it's just been a long time since i've
- 00:49:56been able to seen some positive games
- 00:49:57from the the cheapies
- 00:50:00okay um luke's got a one good one about
- 00:50:05um uh established competitors and
- 00:50:08whenever you're
- 00:50:08analyzing their links he says for
- 00:50:11competitive
- 00:50:12uh terms and established competitors uh
- 00:50:15can you ever tell if the competition has
- 00:50:16done a disavow on their links
- 00:50:19without that knowledge is there a danger
- 00:50:21of over
- 00:50:22optimizing or walking into a penalty yes
- 00:50:26yes for sure so this is one of the
- 00:50:28pitfalls another pitfall
- 00:50:30is if people are hiding their links with
- 00:50:32pbns but you could just assume that they
- 00:50:34would be using target anchor text for
- 00:50:35those anyways but
- 00:50:37this is a risk and that's the thing this
- 00:50:40whole process
- 00:50:41you're looking for guidance and not
- 00:50:42precision right so that's why
- 00:50:44i don't give you 24 different categories
- 00:50:47of targeting
- 00:50:48text brand plus target target long tail
- 00:50:50target phrase and all that kind of stuff
- 00:50:53because i'm mixing in this this amount
- 00:50:55of
- 00:50:56hand waving into it so things like
- 00:50:58disavow aren't going to sting you right
- 00:51:00now if you like the only time i would
- 00:51:04definitely just ignore a website
- 00:51:06is into my analysis is if it just has a
- 00:51:08few links
- 00:51:09and it's an authority site and i can
- 00:51:11just see like it's going to mess up my
- 00:51:12averages
- 00:51:13or if i look at its link profile and
- 00:51:16it's spammed to hell
- 00:51:17then if it's ranked in those top
- 00:51:19positions then it probably means the
- 00:51:21spam links have been disavowed and then
- 00:51:23just ignore it
- 00:51:26got it all right um next one's coming
- 00:51:29from
- 00:51:30joshua um he says matt i notice you're
- 00:51:32using dr as an analysis metric
- 00:51:34uh how do you handle competitors that
- 00:51:36are manipulating dr
- 00:51:38to fluff their metrics with tons of
- 00:51:41links
- 00:51:42i don't think you're going to come up
- 00:51:44with that that often
- 00:51:46in high ranking search or high
- 00:51:48competition serps because
- 00:51:50people people who try to compete in any
- 00:51:53kind of keyword that makes money and
- 00:51:54stuff like that their goal
- 00:51:56isn't to raise dr their goal is just to
- 00:51:59get ranking
- 00:52:00and the techniques used to raise raise
- 00:52:02dr those are techniques you find on
- 00:52:03fiverr and they hurt rankings like you
- 00:52:05don't
- 00:52:06want to be doing that i don't think
- 00:52:07you're going to encounter it that much
- 00:52:08this is what people
- 00:52:10people who inflate dr are the ones that
- 00:52:12just want to be like a guest post farm
- 00:52:14or
- 00:52:14backlink farm et cetera like those are
- 00:52:17the people
- 00:52:18ranking in high competition or any kind
- 00:52:20of affiliate spaces or
- 00:52:22anything good because there's no point
- 00:52:24it hurts you
- 00:52:27got it uh yeah this one's um a little
- 00:52:30bit
- 00:52:30related here um this comes from gideon

- 00:52:49anchors etc would removing or disavowing
- 00:52:52at this time be a good or bad idea
- 00:52:55so this is something i'm yet to test but
- 00:52:57it's been on the list for quite some
- 00:52:59time
- 00:53:00i haven't been that excited to test
- 00:53:02about it because i don't use blog
- 00:53:03comments anyways so
- 00:53:04this these results don't wouldn't even
- 00:53:07help me at all
- 00:53:08but i have a strong hunch that any kind
- 00:53:11of links on
- 00:53:12just kind of typically spammed uh link
- 00:53:15types like blog comments or
- 00:53:17form profiles and form links and that
- 00:53:19kind of stuff
- 00:53:20are just completely ignored by google so
- 00:53:22that would include the anchor text as
- 00:53:23well so
- 00:53:24my hunch is that it's already ignored
- 00:53:26but i don't have the exact answer for
- 00:53:28you because i haven't tested it recently

- 00:53:34when doing the anchor audit if a brand
- 00:53:37has a target keyword in it
- 00:53:38what category would you put that anchor
- 00:53:40in target or brand
- 00:53:42um target remember just stick to your
- 00:53:45convention right if it has it
- 00:53:47you can define it however you want you
- 00:53:49can make a new category up yourself
- 00:53:51brand plus target right i just recommend
- 00:53:54sticking to the
- 00:53:54convention because it's just worked for
- 00:53:56me
- 00:53:59all right questions are slowing down a
- 00:54:03little bit
- 00:54:06is there a gap because i have some stuff

- 00:54:10uh yeah go for it okay
- 00:54:14i'm surprised this question hasn't come
- 00:54:16up but there's two types of anchor text
- 00:54:18distributions that
- 00:54:19uh i didn't touch upon and i'm just kind
- 00:54:21of realizing that this now
- 00:54:23what about internal anchor text right so
- 00:54:25you're linking from one page on your
- 00:54:26site to another page on your site so
- 00:54:29is there any kind of anchor text
- 00:54:30distribution that works best
- 00:54:32so we single variable tested this as
- 00:54:34well and we we tried
- 00:54:35different configurations so we tried 100
- 00:54:38target anchor text
- 00:54:4080 target 20 miscellaneous 50
- 00:54:43target 20 brand 30 miscellaneous all
- 00:54:46these different variations
- 00:54:48going to various pages on websites and
- 00:54:49we track ranking improvements or
- 00:54:51un-improvements over time we found that
- 00:54:53the best
- 00:54:55configuration is 100 target anchor text
- 00:54:58but then vary it up so never the same
- 00:55:01anchor text and just
- 00:55:02hitting all these different variations
- 00:55:04of the keyword you want to rank for
- 00:55:06gets the best result but slightly
- 00:55:09less better result would be going 80
- 00:55:12target anchor text and 20
- 00:55:13miscellaneous click here read more this

- 00:55:16etc now most of the time
- 00:55:20i'm recommending people do the 80 20. so
- 00:55:2280 target 20
- 00:55:23miscellaneous because it gives you some
- 00:55:25margin for error so
- 00:55:26a lot of times people are outsourcing
- 00:55:28this to virtual assistants
- 00:55:30and that don't have the same level of
- 00:55:32detail that you would because it's your
- 00:55:34site you
- 00:55:34care a lot so i kind of recommend the 80
- 00:55:3820 in this kind of situation
- 00:55:39but if you're doing it yourself go ahead
- 00:55:41and do 100 percent targeting or text
- 00:55:43just keep it varied
- 00:55:45the other type of anchor text
- 00:55:47distribution i didn't touch upon
- 00:55:48is tier two link building so if you're
- 00:55:51sending links to your one
- 00:55:53property that's linking to you you want
- 00:55:55to keep it
- 00:55:56blended and varied up you don't need to
- 00:55:58go to the extent
- 00:56:00of doing this analysis and figuring out
- 00:56:02the exact
- 00:56:03the keywords and reverse engineering
- 00:56:06what's the anchor text distribution for
- 00:56:08the top competitors you don't need to go
- 00:56:10to that
- 00:56:10length but just give it a blended anchor
- 00:56:14text just
- 00:56:14you can be you can even use the generic
- 00:56:16framework that i gave you earlier
- 00:56:18the ultimate goal here is if you can get
- 00:56:20that page that's linking to you
- 00:56:22to rank and get some traffic itself then
- 00:56:24that becomes more valuable of a link to
- 00:56:26you
- 00:56:27so just keep it blended give it a chance
- 00:56:29to rank that's what you're trying to do
- 00:56:33all right um brandt has a question
- 00:56:36in here um kind of about you know
- 00:56:40uh when it comes to the ratios you said
- 00:56:42you know remove and replace
- 00:56:44so he's talking about pbns uh he says
- 00:56:47um what what should we do if we've given
- 00:56:50direct pbn links to our website and now
- 00:56:52we want to use guest posts
- 00:56:54and then power them up with uh the pbn
- 00:56:56links is it safe to remove the pbn links
- 00:56:59um and point them uh uh
- 00:57:02and pointing the same pbn links to the
- 00:57:04guest post that we get
- 00:57:07um okay so
- 00:57:10right um
- 00:57:14well the first part of your question is
- 00:57:16it's safe to move the pvn links like
- 00:57:18yeah that's absolutely true
- 00:57:20we always at lead spring when we're
- 00:57:23working on our own affiliate websites
- 00:57:25obviously we don't just do this at my
- 00:57:26client agency but
- 00:57:28when we have affiliate sites that pp and
- 00:57:30links do when they start to hit an
- 00:57:32authority status then we start to peel
- 00:57:33them off to just kind of clean things up
- 00:57:36and yeah you can totally remove pbn
- 00:57:39links and it'll stay ranking you just
- 00:57:40need to replace that link juice
- 00:57:42with some white hat links right now your
- 00:57:44question is
- 00:57:45i've removed those pbns everything's
- 00:57:47going fine my rankings have held
- 00:57:49i've replaced the links etc can i use
- 00:57:52those same ppns to
- 00:57:53link as a to my tier ones that are
- 00:57:55linking to this page
- 00:57:57if i'm entering this completely tin hat
- 00:57:59i would probably say
- 00:58:00it's a tiny bit risky but i wouldn't do
- 00:58:04it
- 00:58:04i just i would just use other pbns for
- 00:58:07that but
- 00:58:08i mean you're not likely to get to get
- 00:58:11busted for it like
- 00:58:13from what i've seen the algorithm is
- 00:58:15isn't checking historically
- 00:58:17it doesn't have that much historical
- 00:58:19checking so
- 00:58:20i didn't say go for it but play at your
- 00:58:23own risk
- 00:58:25all right got it um
