- 00:00:07hi I'm Mary and today I'm going to show
- 00:00:08you the fairlight page in D Vinci
- 00:00:10resolve 17 so let's get started here on
- 00:00:14the fairlight page you'll see running
- 00:00:15across the top I'll mute my playback and
- 00:00:17you will see these are our meters where
- 00:00:20you can check out the monitoring panel
- 00:00:22you can see your control room levels
- 00:00:24your loudness and you can even see a
- 00:00:25viewer of your playback as you're
- 00:00:28working across the right right side you
- 00:00:30will see your mixer which will always
- 00:00:32show you all of your channel strips and
- 00:00:34your main outputs and then in the middle
- 00:00:37this is the timeline and this is where
- 00:00:38you'll have all of your tracks and your
- 00:00:40clips and this is where you can do a lot
- 00:00:41of your work now right now I only have a
- 00:00:44single clip in here and this is actually
- 00:00:46the finished stereo mix from a short
- 00:00:48film called um Hyperlite and as I play
- 00:00:51this back you'll notice that just using
- 00:00:54the space bar will start and stop your
- 00:00:56playback as you would with most
- 00:00:57applications I'll go ahead and unmute
- 00:01:00that um other things you might want to
- 00:01:02do for navigation you'll see right here
- 00:01:03in the middle let me zoom in so you can
- 00:01:06see that a little better these are
- 00:01:08transport controls so you have your play
- 00:01:10and stop if you wanted to use those
- 00:01:12instead you would have them just as you
- 00:01:14would expect and we also have shortcuts
- 00:01:17that you can use um for navigation as
- 00:01:19well so you can go to the home position
- 00:01:23by just pressing the home key will
- 00:01:24always take you to the first frame and
- 00:01:26the end key will take you to the last
- 00:01:28frame of your Clips so that's really
- 00:01:29easy easy navigation as well a couple of
- 00:01:32things to um think about as you're
- 00:01:34working on the fairlight page is if you
- 00:01:36select a track you'll notice that the
- 00:01:38clip beneath the track will always
- 00:01:40highlight that shows you which track
- 00:01:42which clip you're working with and that
- 00:01:44comes in really handy when you start
- 00:01:45doing some editing and things like that
- 00:01:48so one of the things you always want to
- 00:01:50pay attention to is where is your
- 00:01:52playhead and what happens to be selected
- 00:01:54and luckily there's a lot of visual
- 00:01:55Clues to help you figure that out as you
- 00:01:57go so if you look over here like I said
- 00:02:00I've got this track selected and I can
- 00:02:02tell the clip has been selected
- 00:02:03underneath it if I deselect the track
- 00:02:06the clip is still beneath the playhead
- 00:02:08and I can just find where the play head
- 00:02:09is that way as well also if I manually
- 00:02:13select a clip which I'll do it right now
- 00:02:14you'll notice it gets a red outline and
- 00:02:17what that shows you is this clip is also
- 00:02:19selected so there's several different
- 00:02:21ways that you can tell which things have
- 00:02:23been selected at any time or if I click
- 00:02:25in an empty space it's deselected now
- 00:02:29which Clips are selected or which tracks
- 00:02:31are selected come in really handy when
- 00:02:32you start doing using shortcuts and also
- 00:02:35doing um editing cut copy paste that
- 00:02:38sort of things it's very important to
- 00:02:40know where you are and what happens to
- 00:02:42be selected and I'll bring that up again
- 00:02:44when we get closer to it now one other
- 00:02:46thing that we should do as you're
- 00:02:48getting to know the interface is how to
- 00:02:49zoom and move yourself around manually
- 00:02:52so if I wanted to I could just drag my
- 00:02:54playhead across the clips as you can see
- 00:02:56and when I do that I can hear it that's
- 00:02:58scrubbing back and forth just by
- 00:03:00dragging I can also click anywhere in
- 00:03:02this ruler to move my playhead to that
- 00:03:04position whenever I move my playhead to
- 00:03:07a position you'll notice that the time
- 00:03:09code in upper left will update to show
- 00:03:11me exactly what the time code is at the
- 00:03:14point where my playhead is as you can
- 00:03:17see and you can even change this ruler
- 00:03:19if you need to work in different
- 00:03:20increments and all you need to do for
- 00:03:22that is just rightclick in this time
- 00:03:24code display area and you can choose to
- 00:03:27include subframes or even samples if you
- 00:03:30like and if you're working in only
- 00:03:32samples or if you're working in film and
- 00:03:34you need to show feet and frames you can
- 00:03:36also do that here just go down to where
- 00:03:38it says you know feet and frames and now
- 00:03:40I'm looking at it that way I'm going to
- 00:03:43switch it back just to standard just by
- 00:03:45using the right click right Mouse button
- 00:03:47I can go back and change that now
- 00:03:50contextual menus are really handy when
- 00:03:52you're working in the fairlight page and
- 00:03:54any of the pages in Da Vinci resolve so
- 00:03:56you will see me mentioning that quite a
- 00:03:57bit where I talk about right clicking
- 00:03:59and that's just to bring up those
- 00:04:01contextual menus which you'll see
- 00:04:03depending on where I click I'm going to
- 00:04:04get a different menu and different
- 00:04:07options and so that's just another way
- 00:04:09to access different things as you
- 00:04:12go I'm going to deselect this track
- 00:04:15right now and just press the home key to
- 00:04:17move to the beginning and again End Key
- 00:04:20to get to the end so that is just the
- 00:04:23very basics of working with one clip now
- 00:04:25let's take this a little bit further um
- 00:04:27obviously if we were to play through
- 00:04:29this you'll hear this that this is the
- 00:04:30entire mix of this scene but I'm going
- 00:04:33to switch to a different timeline and in
- 00:04:35order to do that we have several ways
- 00:04:37you could you could go to this shortcut
- 00:04:39menu right here and if I click on this
- 00:04:41this will give me a list of some of my
- 00:04:43different recent timelines that I've
- 00:04:45worked with another option that you have
- 00:04:48is we could go to the media pool and the
- 00:04:51media pool is where you can access all
- 00:04:52of your media as the name suggests and
- 00:04:55also your timelines I happen to have a
- 00:04:57bin right here and this is the list of
- 00:04:59all the different timelines that we'll
- 00:05:00be using for this tutorial so right now
- 00:05:03we were just in the starting timeline
- 00:05:05which was a single clip let's fast
- 00:05:07forward to um take our scene a little
- 00:05:10bit further and I'm going to show you
- 00:05:12the stems so go ahead to the next
- 00:05:14timeline and I'm going to hide my media
- 00:05:17pool again and in this timeline the
- 00:05:20difference is this has broken up the
- 00:05:22soundtrack into its constituent Parts
- 00:05:25these are your stems because every
- 00:05:27soundtrack all comes down to three
- 00:05:29elements
- 00:05:30you have your whenever you're working
- 00:05:32your soundtrack you have your dialogue
- 00:05:34you have your music and you have your
- 00:05:36sound effects and all three of those
- 00:05:37things need to be separated so that you
- 00:05:40can
- 00:05:41um deliver those because that's part of
- 00:05:44your deliverables but also for
- 00:05:45localization to other languages they may
- 00:05:48need to change the music or most likely
- 00:05:50change the language and so being able to
- 00:05:52pull those um elements out is an
- 00:05:55important part of the mixing process and
- 00:05:57so just this is just an introduction to
- 00:06:00how those stems work and it's also an
- 00:06:02opportunity to show you a few of the
- 00:06:04other features for working with your
- 00:06:06sound so I'm going to come back into um
- 00:06:10My Scene right here and I'm just going
- 00:06:11to hit shift Z which is a default um
- 00:06:15short cut which will Zoom all of your
- 00:06:18tracks so that they fit the window as
- 00:06:20you can see horizontally which is nice
- 00:06:22now I'm going to talk about selective
- 00:06:24playback for a minute because when it
- 00:06:26comes to selective playback right now I
- 00:06:28have my stereo mix which is up at the
- 00:06:30top plus the vo stem and that is my
- 00:06:33voice stem or dialogue I have my sfx
- 00:06:37which is my um sound effect stem and
- 00:06:39then the music stem down below and it's
- 00:06:41those three parts that are really um
- 00:06:44combined to create our mix so if the
- 00:06:47thing is if I start playback right now
- 00:06:50just by starting playback you'll notice
- 00:06:52that I'm hearing all of them at the same
- 00:06:55time and that's not exactly what I want
- 00:06:57if I only want to hear one of those
- 00:07:00tracks just press right here this is the
- 00:07:02solo button and that will isolate that
- 00:07:04track so it's the only one that we hear
- 00:07:06during playback and now we're hearing
- 00:07:08the actual stereo mix now one of the
- 00:07:11things you'll notice as we see this let
- 00:07:13me stop that for a second I'm also going
- 00:07:15to dim my playback so it's not quite as
- 00:07:17loud over here in the top right you'll
- 00:07:20notice that we have these monitoring
- 00:07:22controls and what those do is those are
- 00:07:25your listening levels so I can instantly
- 00:07:27mute or I can can adjust the levels and
- 00:07:31I can also dim let me just zoom in on
- 00:07:33that so you can see that a little bit
- 00:07:34better and as you can see there's my dim
- 00:07:36that will knock it down by 15 DB and
- 00:07:39you'll notice that it turns yellow to
- 00:07:41show me that it has been dimmed anytime
- 00:07:43I press that again it will put it back
- 00:07:46to whatever listening level I had before
- 00:07:48so again dimming the levels or you can
- 00:07:50also mute but that's your entire
- 00:07:52playback and in this case I just want to
- 00:07:55solo this one track and I wouldn't mind
- 00:07:57making this a little bit bigger and when
- 00:07:59it comes to making your tracks a little
- 00:08:01bit taller you can just manually grab
- 00:08:03one track and make that larger or
- 00:08:05smaller as you can
- 00:08:07see if a track is selected you can also
- 00:08:10Zoom horizontally on that or vertically
- 00:08:12very easily um right here is the
- 00:08:14vertical Zoom slider and as you can see
- 00:08:17I can make this larger or smaller you
- 00:08:21know that's basically changing the
- 00:08:23height and when it's selected it makes
- 00:08:25it really easy to see that waveform
- 00:08:28inside of that particular track so these
- 00:08:29are just kind of getting to know the
- 00:08:31interface a little bit um now something
- 00:08:34else you'll notice that um if I deselect
- 00:08:36the track that there is actually an
- 00:08:37outline on that waveform and that is one
- 00:08:40of our timeline view options that would
- 00:08:43be right up here and this is just lets
- 00:08:45you choose different ways to um view
- 00:08:48things so as you notice that if I click
- 00:08:51on that menu this will give me a few
- 00:08:53other options that I can choose for
- 00:08:55example this turns that border on and
- 00:08:58off so I can choose choose to include
- 00:09:00the Border or I could turn that off at
- 00:09:01any time I'm actually turn it off right
- 00:09:04now and there's some other things that I
- 00:09:06will also show you as we go through this
- 00:09:08tutorial so anytime you want to close
- 00:09:11that menu just click off of it and it'll
- 00:09:13go away and again that was the timeline
- 00:09:15options uh timeline view options menu
- 00:09:18which is right next to your vertical and
- 00:09:20horizontal sliders so let me Zoom back
- 00:09:23out and so as you can see now I can see
- 00:09:26my waveforms without um the outline and
- 00:09:29I could play those through so this is my
- 00:09:31stereo mix and we have the solo Button
- 00:09:35as I mentioned but we also have mute as
- 00:09:36you can see you everybody's familiar
- 00:09:38with mute and so if at any time I don't
- 00:09:40want to hear a track I can also click
- 00:09:42those to mute all of the other tracks or
- 00:09:45we can also swipe those by just swiping
- 00:09:48across the mute buttons or the solo
- 00:09:50buttons so during playback at any time I
- 00:09:52can choose which elements I want to
- 00:09:55listen to and I'm going to do that right
- 00:09:57now so I'm going to turn off my dim I'm
- 00:09:59gonna start early on and I'll start by
- 00:10:01just listening to the stereo mix and I
- 00:10:04will mute these notice I just swipe
- 00:10:06those on I can start
- 00:10:11playback then I can switch that off and
- 00:10:13just listen to my voice this would be
- 00:10:16just the voice over
- 00:10:18track I mute this
- 00:10:20one if I solo this everything else goes
- 00:10:23off and now I only hear the dialogue are
- 00:10:25you sure positive do it so you can
- 00:10:29slowly decide which things you want at
- 00:10:31any time and that's just giving you
- 00:10:33control of your playback so again just a
- 00:10:37nice way to not only understand the
- 00:10:39different elements that go to make up
- 00:10:41the soundtrack but also ways that you
- 00:10:43can isolate which things you want to
- 00:10:44listen to at any given time so that
- 00:10:47would be looking at your different stems
- 00:10:49and it's always um helpful when you're
- 00:10:51learning the mixing process and you're
- 00:10:53working on different tracks is to
- 00:10:55understand you know listen to Just the
- 00:10:57sound effects or listen to Just the
- 00:10:58dialogue and kind of feel how they all
- 00:11:00work together let's go on to the next
- 00:11:04timeline we're going to kind of take
- 00:11:05this to next step and I'm going to show
- 00:11:06you some another thing that we really
- 00:11:08have to work with to get to the final
- 00:11:09soundtrack which you were listening to
- 00:11:11those final stems is we have have to
- 00:11:14start with our production dialogue so
- 00:11:15let's go over to before and after
- 00:11:17dialogue because this will give you a
- 00:11:19nice idea of where we started so if you
- 00:11:22look this is the exact same scene um but
- 00:11:25this the sound we're listening to now
- 00:11:26this is the actual um The Raw footage
- 00:11:29and as you can see this is going to be
- 00:11:31the scene without any embellishments
- 00:11:34none of the extra work has been done
- 00:11:35this is just how it was on the set I'm
- 00:11:37going to actually zoom in a little bit
- 00:11:38so we can um see this a little bit
- 00:11:41better this section just using my
- 00:11:44horizontal Zoom now one of the things to
- 00:11:45think about when you're using your
- 00:11:47horizontal Zoom is it's always going to
- 00:11:48be based on the playhead position so my
- 00:11:50playhead is at the beginning so it's
- 00:11:52zooming around that spot and if I were
- 00:11:55to play a little bit of this wait where
- 00:11:57am I you'll hear this just
- 00:12:02that's the talking and in this scene we
- 00:12:04have ameliana who is our main character
- 00:12:07and then she has a talking computer
- 00:12:08because as you know in space all
- 00:12:10computers talk and there's a talking
- 00:12:12computer that is um helps them out and
- 00:12:15that is a so she is a second character
- 00:12:18right now this is um the production
- 00:12:20sound and so what you're hearing is
- 00:12:22someone feeding the lines for Ada which
- 00:12:24will then be replaced later on and in
- 00:12:26fact we'll be doing some work with the
- 00:12:28Ada voice and some of that incarnation
- 00:12:29in a few minutes so but what you'll hear
- 00:12:32is just the way it was recorded and the
- 00:12:35different voice that was feeding those
- 00:12:37lines so his power reserves are critical
- 00:12:40once his oxygen SWS out he will die so
- 00:12:43as you can see not the most exciting
- 00:12:45thing but the editors had enough footage
- 00:12:47and sound to be able to cut the scene
- 00:12:49together and move on to audio post now
- 00:12:52I'm going to zoom out a little bit
- 00:12:54here and I'm going to move to the next
- 00:12:56section so what we have next so you can
- 00:12:58see kind of this before and after and
- 00:13:00get a feel for how this works is the
- 00:13:02next shot down is this is going to be
- 00:13:03the scene so we went from the footage
- 00:13:06without all of the visual effects to now
- 00:13:08the visual effects have been done and
- 00:13:10this is what the sound um the finished
- 00:13:13sound same scene an orbit of Planet q-
- 00:13:21465b what about Phillip Philip's cryopod
- 00:13:24has lost power now one of the things you
- 00:13:27can do now with Dentures all 17 is that
- 00:13:29any time you can just press the P key or
- 00:13:33instead of pressing P if you'd rather
- 00:13:35you can come over here to the workpace
- 00:13:37menu and go down to where it says Fair
- 00:13:39light viewer um and this is where you
- 00:13:41can make undock your viewer if you would
- 00:13:44like or you can go up to um the viewer
- 00:13:48mode and choose uh Cinema preview right
- 00:13:51here the cinema viewer and that would be
- 00:13:53um command F if you're on a um Mac or um
- 00:13:58control F if you happen to be on a PC
- 00:14:01and so what that will do is it'll give
- 00:14:02you that full screen preview so you can
- 00:14:04actually watch and listen at the same
- 00:14:06time was critical and that's just a
- 00:14:08single keystroke to get you to that okay
- 00:14:11also by looking at our monitor I can
- 00:14:13click the button in the lower right
- 00:14:15corner of the viewer and I can just
- 00:14:17break this out as a floating viewer at
- 00:14:19any time I can move it if I have a
- 00:14:21second U monitor I can move it over to
- 00:14:23that and I can resize as well so that
- 00:14:26gives you a nice visual that you can
- 00:14:28work with as you go go and dock that
- 00:14:31again and if you want to dock it at any
- 00:14:33time you just click the button in the
- 00:14:34top right of your viewer and it goes
- 00:14:36right back now um so you can hear this
- 00:14:40is the finished sound and then of course
- 00:14:41at the end I have both together so you
- 00:14:44can kind of do a little bit of a
- 00:14:45comparison now one of the nice things
- 00:14:48about um that you might have noticed is
- 00:14:50this drone sound in the background the
- 00:14:52Drone is like the allpurpose filler some
- 00:14:55sort of sound that just kind of helped
- 00:14:57um cover up a lot of the issues that may
- 00:14:59be going on with your soundtrack until
- 00:15:01you get to the point where you've done
- 00:15:02all the work so when for starters it's
- 00:15:05very common to have you know the
- 00:15:07editorial department will put in some
- 00:15:09kind of drone sound or background sounds
- 00:15:11or anything they can to kind of get us
- 00:15:13to that point so that's just helping
- 00:15:17sell the sound but um you know one of
- 00:15:20the things is you know where do you get
- 00:15:22those sounds and how do you make those
- 00:15:23work and if you're used to working with
- 00:15:25d Vinci resolve for editing then you may
- 00:15:27be um comfortable with just doing basic
- 00:15:30you know video and audio editing but
- 00:15:32over here on the fairlight page we have
- 00:15:34a couple of features that only work on
- 00:15:36this page and I'll show you right now
- 00:15:38how you can bring in some additional
- 00:15:39Clips if you want to and a couple of
- 00:15:41options you have and let's just use this
- 00:15:42drone as the example so over in the
- 00:15:45media pool and as you can see I still
- 00:15:47have my media pool showing is instead of
- 00:15:49looking at the timelines what I'm going
- 00:15:51to look at is um the Drone sounds and
- 00:15:54over here I have a bin with a variety of
- 00:15:57drone sounds now when you want to listen
- 00:15:59to any of these clips we have a preview
- 00:16:01player right here up at the top and so
- 00:16:04if I were to select this is ambient
- 00:16:06space drone number three if I select
- 00:16:10that and start
- 00:16:11playing you'll hear that's the sound of
- 00:16:14that drone it's kind of a low you know
- 00:16:17ambient space drone um I have a couple
- 00:16:20of different options here then there's
- 00:16:21also a few of them that have a little
- 00:16:23bit of a musical element to them um
- 00:16:26that's too much for this scene but might
- 00:16:28be useful for something else so we have
- 00:16:30a variety of drones here to go through
- 00:16:32there's a suspenseful drone um again
- 00:16:35maybe a little bit too much now you
- 00:16:36notice all I'm doing is selecting
- 00:16:38whichever one I want to work with and
- 00:16:40then just hitting the space bar to play
- 00:16:42of course over here in the preview
- 00:16:43player you also
- 00:16:45have if you look we also have our play
- 00:16:48button me just change my framing
- 00:16:52here there we go you can see we have our
- 00:16:54play button and we also have stop as
- 00:16:57well um if needed and so one of the
- 00:17:01things you also have is the ability to
- 00:17:02change the way you view that waveform in
- 00:17:05here so you can actually zoom out to
- 00:17:08maybe there's 1% where I see more of the
- 00:17:10waveform or I can zoom much further in
- 00:17:13um if I need to see more detail while
- 00:17:16you're looking at the preview player one
- 00:17:17of the details you need to know is this
- 00:17:19bar running across the bottom that
- 00:17:21always represents the entire clip so
- 00:17:23this is similar to what you might see in
- 00:17:25the cut page where we have the upper
- 00:17:27timeline that always shows you entire
- 00:17:29timeline well in this case this bar here
- 00:17:32this is our scrubber bar shows the
- 00:17:33entire clip so that would be the first
- 00:17:35frame and that's the last frame so
- 00:17:37wherever I happen to go I always know
- 00:17:39where I am I'm not going to worry about
- 00:17:41this waveform up here because that may
- 00:17:43not show me exactly where I am depending
- 00:17:45on what I'm my zoom level at that time
- 00:17:49now if we wanted to edit a few of these
- 00:17:51drone sounds in I just want to point
- 00:17:52something out let's say we wanted to
- 00:17:54select three of them three or four of
- 00:17:55them let's say we want drone one if I or
- 00:17:58drone two if I just want to drag that to
- 00:18:00the timeline I could just grab it drag
- 00:18:02it into the timeline I can put it into
- 00:18:04the track a track that's already
- 00:18:06existing or I could put it into a track
- 00:18:08below my tracks and it will
- 00:18:10automatically make as you can see a new
- 00:18:12track right there for me to work with
- 00:18:14which is pretty cool I'm going to
- 00:18:15actually undo that Now command Z and
- 00:18:19just do an undo and instead of bringing
- 00:18:20in one I'd like to bring in several at
- 00:18:22one time so I want to change my um the
- 00:18:25height here to give myself a little more
- 00:18:27real estate to look at I could use this
- 00:18:30vertical Zoom as you can see but another
- 00:18:33thing we have is we have a lot of
- 00:18:34functionality with a three button Mouse
- 00:18:37and so what I'm going to do instead is
- 00:18:38hold the shift key and just use that
- 00:18:40middle Mouse wheel and as you can see
- 00:18:42shift and the middle Mouse wheel will
- 00:18:44also do my vertical Zoom which is
- 00:18:46helpful all right so if I want to bring
- 00:18:48in a few of these drones at once is
- 00:18:50let's say I want to get the first one uh
- 00:18:52let's say drone to bed plus I also want
- 00:18:55to get the low drone number one and
- 00:18:59Let's do let's get another one let's do
- 00:19:02the space Ambient Drone that sounds fun
- 00:19:06and so that gives me three different
- 00:19:07drone sounds that I can work with so if
- 00:19:09I want to bring those in now if I
- 00:19:11manually drag them to an empty space it
- 00:19:14will put all three next to each other in
- 00:19:16the same track and I'm going to hit
- 00:19:18shift Z and as you can see there are all
- 00:19:20three of those now in the timeline ready
- 00:19:22to work with but something that you can
- 00:19:24do here on the fairlite page that's a
- 00:19:25little bit different I'm going to undo
- 00:19:27that just command Z
- 00:19:29and by the way if you ever want to undo
- 00:19:31that's up here in the edit menu there it
- 00:19:33is undo we even have an undo history in
- 00:19:36case you want to look at all the
- 00:19:37different changes youve made and pick
- 00:19:39and choose what you want to do from that
- 00:19:41history um so the difference is I still
- 00:19:44have these selected and again I'm just
- 00:19:45selecting one command selecting or
- 00:19:48control selecting if you're on a PC um
- 00:19:51the different ones that I want to work
- 00:19:52with there's my three and as I drag them
- 00:19:55over instead of dropping them into one
- 00:19:57track if you hold the command key it
- 00:20:00will create new tracks for you for all
- 00:20:02of the clips and if I release notice
- 00:20:05that it just made me new tracks
- 00:20:06automatically and each of them is now um
- 00:20:09separated and ready to work with that
- 00:20:11way so this is just a really useful way
- 00:20:13to grab a whole handful of clips that
- 00:20:15you know you want to work with and start
- 00:20:17building into your sound design or your
- 00:20:20sound effects or whatever it is you can
- 00:20:21just drag them all in and by holding
- 00:20:23command or control if you're on a Mac or
- 00:20:26PC it will put them all individually on
- 00:20:29different tracks I'm going to go ahead
- 00:20:30and undo that for now but that's worth
- 00:20:32noting um and so that you know was the
- 00:20:36main thing with this particular timeline
- 00:20:38was kind of showing you the um evolution
- 00:20:41of the dialogue now let's break this
- 00:20:43down a little further I'm going back to
- 00:20:45the media pool timelines and let's go in
- 00:20:48now to look at dialogue editing so now
- 00:20:50it's our turn Okay so seen what we're
- 00:20:53trying to do now let's actually look at
- 00:20:55what the workflow might be and how you
- 00:20:57would do it right here in the fair Light
- 00:20:59page first thing I want to do is hide
- 00:21:01the media pool and this is the scene as
- 00:21:04as it came from editorial I'm going to
- 00:21:06hit shift Z to fit that to the window
- 00:21:09and one of the things you'll notice
- 00:21:10across the bottom is there's that drone
- 00:21:11again right it's you're going to find
- 00:21:13that quite a bit so if this is the scene
- 00:21:16let's see what we actually have to work
- 00:21:18with and one of the things is I don't
- 00:21:21really need all of this these extra
- 00:21:23things here at the moment I don't need
- 00:21:26my mixer right now so I can hide that by
- 00:21:28just clicking this mixer across the top
- 00:21:31you'll notice there's our toolbar if I
- 00:21:32just click on mixer I can show and hide
- 00:21:35it anytime same thing with our meters
- 00:21:37I'm just going to hide those as well but
- 00:21:39I wanted to see the viewer so let's go
- 00:21:42back bring the meters up and just click
- 00:21:44at the bottom so that we can bring out
- 00:21:46the viewer and then hide the meters and
- 00:21:49that way I have them just like that I
- 00:21:51can make this a little bit smaller if I
- 00:21:53wanted to and then I have you know the
- 00:21:55workspace or the setup that I want to
- 00:21:57use at this moment
- 00:21:59okay um again I can mix adjustments as
- 00:22:02needed so here's my scene and across the
- 00:22:06top all of the dialogue and then we have
- 00:22:08this adaa test voice now I will tell you
- 00:22:10that this adaa test voice who was
- 00:22:13supposed to be a computer was actually
- 00:22:15made by a computer which is great at
- 00:22:18from an editorial standpoint to give you
- 00:22:20some timing but obviously for licensing
- 00:22:23purposes and copyright and all of that
- 00:22:25not such a good idea so this will need
- 00:22:27to be re-recorded and replaced and
- 00:22:29that's something we're going to do in
- 00:22:30just a minute as replace it with another
- 00:22:32recording so let me just play a little
- 00:22:34bit of this scene right here I'm going
- 00:22:36to start at this spot just start
- 00:22:37playback
- 00:22:40ha identify the person in front of me
- 00:22:43emana Newton are you sure yes you hear
- 00:22:47that voice so that's great that computer
- 00:22:50voice but again that computer voice is
- 00:22:52not one we can actually use it was
- 00:22:54helpful for um working with this so I'm
- 00:22:57going to show you a few other features
- 00:22:58for um how we can um bring in another
- 00:23:02clip we'll make ourselves a track and
- 00:23:04then also I want to hide this we're
- 00:23:07going to mute that and hide it so first
- 00:23:09thing is I'm just going to go to the
- 00:23:10beginning of the timeline and I'd like
- 00:23:11to make another track for a different
- 00:23:13piece of VoiceOver so let's go to the
- 00:23:16media pool and find that piece of
- 00:23:19VoiceOver and it's inside of the bin
- 00:23:21over here called voiceover and I have
- 00:23:23two one is the test which is going to be
- 00:23:25the computer voice it appears to be
- 00:23:27powered down that we can't use and then
- 00:23:29I have this scratch vo Philip Ma I which
- 00:23:33is one that was recorded right here in
- 00:23:35Fair light and that's the one that we're
- 00:23:36going to use for now and then we'll
- 00:23:38process it and make some changes to it
- 00:23:40so let's bring that into the timeline
- 00:23:42now I could choose an exact spot for it
- 00:23:45um or we could drag it into the timeline
- 00:23:47I'm going to have this actually create a
- 00:23:48track so just rightclick anywhere in
- 00:23:51this um in the track headers and anytime
- 00:23:54you right click there you can choose to
- 00:23:55add a track or add tracks in this case
- 00:23:58case I'm just going to add a single
- 00:23:59track a mono track here we go and it
- 00:24:02showed up at the bottom so anytime you
- 00:24:05want to name a track all you do is just
- 00:24:07double click on the header in the name
- 00:24:10field and then you can type it so in
- 00:24:11this case
- 00:24:14Ada
- 00:24:16scratch Bo there we go and this is where
- 00:24:19I'm going to place that sound now over
- 00:24:22here I'm going to take it and I just
- 00:24:23want to stick it somewhere in that
- 00:24:25timeline in that track so just grab the
- 00:24:27clip and drag it in you'll get the
- 00:24:29entire clip there it is okay so that's a
- 00:24:32start and I no longer need to be in my
- 00:24:35media pool so again hide it it's always
- 00:24:37nice to keep as much real estate as you
- 00:24:39can when you need it also I don't even
- 00:24:41need the viewer right now so let's go
- 00:24:42ahead and hide that let's save save our
- 00:24:44space for what we need and in fact
- 00:24:46speaking of hiding things I don't really
- 00:24:48need much of anything what we're really
- 00:24:50doing is we're going to chop this up
- 00:24:52this voice over into individual pieces
- 00:24:54and we are going to um use it and put it
- 00:24:56into position to replace
- 00:24:58these other Clips so one of the things
- 00:25:00to think about when you're doing your
- 00:25:01dialogue editing is what is the most
- 00:25:03efficient way to get in there and
- 00:25:05perform edits without having to overly
- 00:25:09Mouse and drag and think about it it
- 00:25:10should be very fluid and fast because
- 00:25:13you could be performing thousands of
- 00:25:14edits at a time as you're going through
- 00:25:16and doing your dialogue editing so we're
- 00:25:19going to do all of that here in a very
- 00:25:20short amount of time and I'll show you
- 00:25:22the fair light way of doing it using the
- 00:25:26same editing shortcuts that you might
- 00:25:28use on a word processor for cut copy and
- 00:25:31paste you would do the exact same things
- 00:25:33right here the important thing is paying
- 00:25:35attention to how you have your selection
- 00:25:37and your navigation which I'll be
- 00:25:38showing you as well so one of the things
- 00:25:41I noticed though is this came in from
- 00:25:43editorials you noticed that there's been
- 00:25:45some key frames applied I noticed that
- 00:25:46there's a little effects says right see
- 00:25:49right here there's a badge that shows
- 00:25:50that there's an effect on this and one
- 00:25:52of the things I need to do is actually
- 00:25:54wipe off anything that anyone else may
- 00:25:55have done to these clips so we're
- 00:25:57starting with them fresh right we want
- 00:25:59them to hear how they were actually
- 00:26:01recorded so we'll know what we can um
- 00:26:04what we need to improve and that we'll
- 00:26:05be making those decisions so for all of
- 00:26:07those assistant editors who spent a lot
- 00:26:09of time making this sound great thank
- 00:26:11you and now we want to just remove all
- 00:26:14of those attributes that are on those
- 00:26:15clips so to do that it's very simple
- 00:26:18just going to we're still using our
- 00:26:19Arrow tool we've been in the same tool
- 00:26:21all along just click here at the
- 00:26:23beginning and just drag straight across
- 00:26:25all the way to the end and what I've
- 00:26:27done is I've just selected all of the
- 00:26:28Clips in that track okay by doing that I
- 00:26:32can then remove the attributes on all of
- 00:26:35those selected Clips with a right click
- 00:26:38okay so I go over here to the right
- 00:26:39click and choose remove attributes now
- 00:26:42what makes remove attributes there it is
- 00:26:45remove attributes when you bring that up
- 00:26:47you're going to get a separate
- 00:26:49window okay there it is and the remove
- 00:26:51attributes window here you will see you
- 00:26:54can choose to remove volume I can remove
- 00:26:56plugins or EQ I'm just going to remove
- 00:26:58everything by checking that box click
- 00:27:01apply and now all of these are back to
- 00:27:03whatever they originally were there's
- 00:27:05been no changes applied and that's
- 00:27:06exactly what I need for this particular
- 00:27:08functionality so now we're starting from
- 00:27:10scratch we can also remove the
- 00:27:12attributes on this these middle Clips as
- 00:27:15well just in case there's any applied to
- 00:27:17them just set those as well and now
- 00:27:19we're starting from scratch the Drone
- 00:27:21I'm not so worried about we can leave
- 00:27:23that as is okay and then the next thing
- 00:27:26I want to do is we know we do not need
- 00:27:28this voice but we want I would like to
- 00:27:31set some markers to use for navigation
- 00:27:34to match up with those Ada voice clips
- 00:27:36in the test track and so I'm going to
- 00:27:38show you a little trick to kind of make
- 00:27:40it easier to navigate you can see that
- 00:27:42using the up and down arrows will let
- 00:27:44you automatically navigate from clip to
- 00:27:46clip as you can see and I can easily do
- 00:27:50that and it will look at every single
- 00:27:51clip and it will move me one at a time
- 00:27:54up and down the timeline One Clip at a
- 00:27:56time well if I eliminate all the other
- 00:27:58Clips except for the ones I want then it
- 00:28:00will make it even easier for me and so
- 00:28:02what we'll do is let's bring up our
- 00:28:03index which is right here this is a
- 00:28:05different window we haven't looked at or
- 00:28:07a different panel and if you bring up
- 00:28:09the index the index is like an
- 00:28:11interactive list but it's much more
- 00:28:13exciting than that it actually is very
- 00:28:14useful when we going in and out of that
- 00:28:16index often sometimes for markers
- 00:28:19sometimes to work with our tracks and in
- 00:28:21this case once you show the index I want
- 00:28:23you to look at the tracks index and here
- 00:28:26you'll see a list of all your tracks it
- 00:28:28also shows your buses as well and over
- 00:28:31here you'll see the visibility of those
- 00:28:33tracks so any track that I want to hide
- 00:28:35I can just turn off this visibility by
- 00:28:37clicking that little I and you notice
- 00:28:39that it disappears from the timeline it
- 00:28:41also disappears from the mixer but guess
- 00:28:43what it's still there it's just hidden
- 00:28:45at this moment now when you hide the
- 00:28:47visibility it does not actually mute it
- 00:28:50or solo it it's just hiding it so if you
- 00:28:53actually don't want to hear it you could
- 00:28:54also mute it at the same time in this
- 00:28:57case I just want to hide that I also
- 00:28:59would like to hide the Drone and so now
- 00:29:01I only have these clips showing that's
- 00:29:03pretty easy and by the way the tracks
- 00:29:05index is also where you can move tracks
- 00:29:07around if you like as well so in fact
- 00:29:10let's move a track let's take our
- 00:29:12scratch vo I'm going to bring back that
- 00:29:14drone for just a minute and let's take
- 00:29:16this scratch vo and just grab just click
- 00:29:18anywhere on that bar right there and I
- 00:29:21just want to move it up so it's above
- 00:29:23the Drone track and as you can see I
- 00:29:25just reordered those tracks by using the
- 00:29:28index now hiding things let's hide that
- 00:29:31drone and so now the only Clips I'm
- 00:29:33seeing are these five plus that last one
- 00:29:35on the end and now I can use those with
- 00:29:38my up and down arrows as you can see to
- 00:29:40quickly move up and down the timeline
- 00:29:43which is helpful right um it's even
- 00:29:45going to get better I'd like to set
- 00:29:46markers here now the markers is just
- 00:29:49going to be a little it's like a Post-It
- 00:29:50note right I could put information in it
- 00:29:52I can use the colors it's something that
- 00:29:54I can draw attention to if I'm
- 00:29:55communicating with other team me members
- 00:29:58at the same time in this case I just
- 00:30:00want to press M once and that will set a
- 00:30:02marker I'm going to zoom in a little bit
- 00:30:05and the zoom shortcuts command and the
- 00:30:07equals or minus or of course I could use
- 00:30:09my horizontal zoom and in this case I've
- 00:30:12set a marker right there I'll just leave
- 00:30:14it blue for the moment and if I press
- 00:30:15the down arrow it goes to the end of
- 00:30:17that clip and then the beginning of the
- 00:30:19next clip I'll press press M again it's
- 00:30:21now marking that and so I'm just going
- 00:30:23to walk down here and quickly set
- 00:30:25markers for each of these because these
- 00:30:27markers will give us something we can
- 00:30:29navigate to easily for when we start
- 00:30:32placing those other Clips so I'm just
- 00:30:34using that as a guide plus it's always
- 00:30:36nice to know how to set markers now any
- 00:30:39of these markers you can also add
- 00:30:40information you can doubleclick them you
- 00:30:42can add colors or change the colors and
- 00:30:45um give them names and so so on we'll
- 00:30:47work more with those later just showing
- 00:30:50that I'm going to hit shift Z so now I
- 00:30:52can see all of those different markers
- 00:30:54and I can use those to navigate with now
- 00:30:56the interesting thing about markers is
- 00:30:58is if you ever use hold the shift key
- 00:31:00while using your up and down arrows
- 00:31:02that's going to let you walk up and down
- 00:31:05the timeline from marker to marker no
- 00:31:07matter how many tracks you have no ma
- 00:31:09matter how many Clips your navigation
- 00:31:11will now only focus on the markers if
- 00:31:13you're holding the shift key and so
- 00:31:16that's very useful as well now what are
- 00:31:19we going to do with this clip well it's
- 00:31:20time for us to look at using another
- 00:31:22tool I'd like to actually dice this up
- 00:31:24into smaller pieces and then move them
- 00:31:27so that's a good opportunity for us to
- 00:31:29just see how that works and how the
- 00:31:30tools work here in the fair Light page
- 00:31:32now if you're familiar with the edit
- 00:31:34page maybe you grab a blade tool and do
- 00:31:36things or using shortcuts here we can do
- 00:31:38that as well but we'll use our playhead
- 00:31:40um kind of as a guide as we go and
- 00:31:43something else we're going to Leverage
- 00:31:45is we're going to click and make sure we
- 00:31:47select that track because by selecting
- 00:31:49the track option and the middle Mouse
- 00:31:51wheel will Zoom horizontally and shift
- 00:31:54in the middle Mouse wheel will Zoom
- 00:31:56vertically and as you can see I'm a to
- 00:31:58make this nice and big so I can really
- 00:31:59see it and I want to dice this up while
- 00:32:02I'm playing it which is a little um
- 00:32:05exciting right so I could go in there
- 00:32:06and manually um let me go back to the
- 00:32:09beginning I could go in there manually
- 00:32:11and just grab the scissor tool or it's
- 00:32:13the razor is what it really is if I grab
- 00:32:16that razor tool it's going to cut
- 00:32:17whatever I have selected at the playhead
- 00:32:19position well instead of using that we
- 00:32:22could use a shortcut and the shortcut is
- 00:32:24command B for blade and so as as long as
- 00:32:28this is selected it will only cut that
- 00:32:31particular clip now if I had other Clips
- 00:32:34in the timeline I'm going to bring back
- 00:32:35my drone for just a minute so you can
- 00:32:37see if I don't have anything selected
- 00:32:40and I press command B do you notice that
- 00:32:43it's going to slice everything so that's
- 00:32:46going to split every single clip beneath
- 00:32:48the playhead which is not what I want so
- 00:32:50command Z to undo that going to go back
- 00:32:53to the beginning and that's where I was
- 00:32:55saying track selection actually does
- 00:32:56matter and as you can see we just did
- 00:32:59that so I'm back at the beginning and my
- 00:33:01track is selected which automatically
- 00:33:03selects the clip beneath our playhead on
- 00:33:05the selected track which is great and
- 00:33:07then as I play I'm just going to hit
- 00:33:09command B every time I pass one of these
- 00:33:12phrases and that will chop it up and I
- 00:33:14can do that right on the
- 00:33:15Fly and so that's what I'm going to do
- 00:33:17right now so ameliana
- 00:33:20Newton yes split I'm just hitting
- 00:33:24command B Philip Ma I cannot explain
- 00:33:27this
- 00:33:28discrepancy Earth date here you go and
- 00:33:31so right there on the Fly I could do
- 00:33:33that very quickly and now I can move
- 00:33:35these into position as needed um to
- 00:33:38those markers and so a lot of different
- 00:33:41ways that we could have split those up
- 00:33:42this just happened to be one of them but
- 00:33:45like I said it's very easy to work with
- 00:33:47these things on the Fly going to hide
- 00:33:49that drone track again so I don't need
- 00:33:51it and then if I want to snap these into
- 00:33:52position I could just drag them over to
- 00:33:55those marker positions if I wanted to
- 00:33:58let me zoom out a little bit more as I
- 00:34:00can see there's that last marker and
- 00:34:02that's where I want this clip to go so
- 00:34:04I'll just move this over there it's in
- 00:34:06position just using those markers as a
- 00:34:08guide so that I could have all of my
- 00:34:10other tracks showing and it will not
- 00:34:12interfere with me placing these tracks
- 00:34:14because or these different clips in the
- 00:34:17track and again we can manually drag
- 00:34:20these clips wherever we need them to go
- 00:34:22from one marker to the next um keep in
- 00:34:25mind as you zoom horizontally it's it's
- 00:34:27always looking at what your where your
- 00:34:29playhead is not what happens to be
- 00:34:31selected so I'd like to um go ahead and
- 00:34:35take this clip here and zoom in a little
- 00:34:39bit I'm going to select that clip and I
- 00:34:41want to move it into position so I can
- 00:34:43just manually drag that to a marker and
- 00:34:46line these up and of course I have the
- 00:34:47other Clips as a guide as well you can
- 00:34:50even cut copy and paste these into
- 00:34:52position as well so for example I might
- 00:34:55as well show you how to do cut and paste
- 00:34:58is if I were to select this clip I could
- 00:35:01right click and choose cut there is cut
- 00:35:04or command x on a macrol x if you're on
- 00:35:09a PC if I cut that you notice that it
- 00:35:11just cut that clip it gave me a ghost
- 00:35:13image of that clip and why would I do
- 00:35:15that because now I can just navigate to
- 00:35:17the marker and when I get there paste
- 00:35:20because anytime you cut something it is
- 00:35:23remains um connected in the same
- 00:35:26relationship to that playhead so any
- 00:35:27movement of the playhead the clipboard
- 00:35:29version goes with it so I have cut that
- 00:35:32clip I'm going to use shift down arrow
- 00:35:34to walk my playhead down to where I want
- 00:35:36it to go and command V to paste I'm
- 00:35:39going to go back up go back to where I
- 00:35:41was before just using my up and down
- 00:35:43arrows or go to the home position even
- 00:35:45notice I'm walking up and down between
- 00:35:47Clips just using up and down that clip
- 00:35:50is selected ready to go command X to cut
- 00:35:52it shift down arrow to get to my marker
- 00:35:55and paste command V and so I can do this
- 00:35:58really really quickly um it's just
- 00:36:01getting to
- 00:36:02know the software so again with a
- 00:36:05selected track this really works great
- 00:36:07if I don't have that track selected
- 00:36:09notice when I go over top of the clip it
- 00:36:11is not selected and therefore I have to
- 00:36:14actually physically go in there and
- 00:36:15click it so be aware selection helps and
- 00:36:18that's one of the reasons we have that
- 00:36:20this also works great on our consoles
- 00:36:21like the one behind me um to show you um
- 00:36:25you can use then the jog wheel or the
- 00:36:27search dial to grab your clips and move
- 00:36:29them around really fluidly just like
- 00:36:31we're doing here so command X for this
- 00:36:33last one moving it to the marker and
- 00:36:36paste and I'm going to go
- 00:36:37back to my home position command X and
- 00:36:40I'll move the last one and paste and so
- 00:36:44I was able to cut those up and put them
- 00:36:46into position just using a few of the
- 00:36:48other features that we have in the
- 00:36:50fairlite page that you may not use when
- 00:36:52you're working in picture editing um or
- 00:36:55on the edit page so so now that I've put
- 00:36:58these into position I no longer need
- 00:37:00this track right Aus track so I'm going
- 00:37:02to just mute that track and then let's
- 00:37:05hide it I'm going to come over here and
- 00:37:06I'm going to hide that test track right
- 00:37:09there the test voice and so now when I
- 00:37:11play this back and I'll just start back
- 00:37:12here the voice the new voice should be
- 00:37:15replacing the one that I had there
- 00:37:17before let's just test
- 00:37:19it and let's go ahead and bring up our
- 00:37:21meters so we can see identify the person
- 00:37:23in front of me ameliana Newton are you
- 00:37:26sure
- 00:37:29yes okay and there it is so and by the
- 00:37:32way that voice over recording was done
- 00:37:34just right here in fairl using a
- 00:37:36microphone so um very easy to do that's
- 00:37:40a little bit of our cutting and pasting
- 00:37:42and navigation within a single track
- 00:37:45let's look at now taking it to the next
- 00:37:46step when you are working with dialogue
- 00:37:48editing the other key is you need to
- 00:37:50separate every sing of voice to their
- 00:37:52own track right now we have two tracks
- 00:37:55one is General allpurpose dialogue which
- 00:37:57which is both ameliana and Phillip and
- 00:38:00then we have our scratch voice over
- 00:38:02below so one of the things we have to do
- 00:38:04is add another track let's do that right
- 00:38:06here just rightclick on that dialogue
- 00:38:10track header and I'm going to choose add
- 00:38:12tracks plural and by doing that I can
- 00:38:15pick and choose where I want that to go
- 00:38:17and in this case I want it to go below
- 00:38:19dialogue I want it to be
- 00:38:21mono because these are all monos single
- 00:38:24Channel mono track so add track and
- 00:38:26there it is
- 00:38:28okay so now we have it right where we
- 00:38:29need it um and that's where we're going
- 00:38:32to then move all of Phillips dialogue
- 00:38:34we're going to drop it down into his own
- 00:38:36track we'll leave the top track for
- 00:38:38ailana so in fact I'm going to go ahead
- 00:38:41and name this
- 00:38:43one there this top track is a
- 00:38:46Milana and the second one down here and
- 00:38:50by the way another trick is if I am
- 00:38:52typing in the name of one track and then
- 00:38:55I'd like to name the track below just
- 00:38:57press the the tab key it'll
- 00:38:58automatically select the track name
- 00:39:00below so I can type Philip then there we
- 00:39:03go so we now have the Philip track and
- 00:39:05the ameliana track and so now our our
- 00:39:09job is to find all of the sound that
- 00:39:11belongs or the dialogue that belongs to
- 00:39:13Phillip move it to his own track and
- 00:39:15leave ameliana on her own and so very
- 00:39:18simple to do that we're going to use the
- 00:39:20exact same kind of functionality we did
- 00:39:21before with cut and paste the difference
- 00:39:24now is we're moving from track to track
- 00:39:26and whether there's two characters in a
- 00:39:27room or it's an interview between two
- 00:39:30people or if it happens to be um
- 00:39:32whatever it is an ensemble cast sitting
- 00:39:35around a dinner table all talking at
- 00:39:36once everybody gets their own track and
- 00:39:39that way you can make sure that their
- 00:39:40voices sound excellent because they're
- 00:39:43going to get their own treatment um they
- 00:39:45will all be all the work that you will
- 00:39:47do will be to make that voice sound
- 00:39:50awesome so first thing I want to do is
- 00:39:53just let's just go to the beginning of
- 00:39:54this track um just going to press the
- 00:39:56home key and as we walk ourselves down
- 00:39:58using the up and down arrow each time we
- 00:40:00get I get to a clip if I need to move it
- 00:40:03I basically need to drop it down to the
- 00:40:05lower track now I no longer need to see
- 00:40:08my index let's hide that so I have a
- 00:40:10little bit more room to work and
- 00:40:12something else I'd like to do is um when
- 00:40:15I'm working on this is um make sure you
- 00:40:18can see your viewers so that you can see
- 00:40:19who's actually talking or making any
- 00:40:21noise or voicing um any of the sounds
- 00:40:24that we know that it belongs on their
- 00:40:26track
- 00:40:28now um as far as the navigation goes
- 00:40:30again I'm moving up and down to get from
- 00:40:32one clip to the next and this first clip
- 00:40:35that has some sound on it let's let's
- 00:40:37start with the first one who's actually
- 00:40:40making this sound if anybody no one's
- 00:40:42actually making the sound and as you can
- 00:40:44see it's basically a dolly shot for
- 00:40:46ameliana so we're just going to leave
- 00:40:47this sound with her let's go to the next
- 00:40:50shot that's philli so I think I'd like
- 00:40:52to move that down to Philip's track and
- 00:40:54whenever you want to move Clips between
- 00:40:56tracks there's very easy navigation and
- 00:40:59I can show you right where that is if
- 00:41:01you want it's your track destinations in
- 00:41:04the timeline menu if you go down here to
- 00:41:06where it says track destinations audio
- 00:41:08you'll see very simple shortcuts for
- 00:41:10that it's going to be option right down
- 00:41:12here it's option command and the number
- 00:41:15one for the track one option command
- 00:41:18number two it's basically those two keys
- 00:41:20next to your space bar other ones that
- 00:41:21you'll use in order to um select a
- 00:41:24specific track you'll notice that you
- 00:41:26can also do the same thing for audio
- 00:41:28tracks those same Keys plus the up and
- 00:41:31down arrows will also navigate your
- 00:41:33selection deselect the track and I'll
- 00:41:35just show you if I hold down those
- 00:41:37option and command together my down
- 00:41:39arrow notice that I can move up and down
- 00:41:41between these tracks very easily and
- 00:41:43that will make it super fast when I'm
- 00:41:46cutting and pasting also because I'm
- 00:41:48using this I won't accidentally move
- 00:41:51anything out of sync because it's just a
- 00:41:53direct move H it's it's mouse-free
- 00:41:55movement that I'll be doing in order to
- 00:41:59um get it where it needs to go so if I
- 00:42:01want to move this down I just my play
- 00:42:03head's over the clip already just
- 00:42:05command X then I'm going to hit the
- 00:42:07shortcut option command and down arrow
- 00:42:10it's in position I'm going to paste with
- 00:42:12command V and then I'm going to go right
- 00:42:14back up and go to the next clip this one
- 00:42:16is also philli so command X down command
- 00:42:20B and back
- 00:42:22up um and let's move down next clip is
- 00:42:27and by the way when you're navigating
- 00:42:29sometimes you don't have to watch the
- 00:42:30entire thing but um you can also move
- 00:42:33faster or slower uh you could use your
- 00:42:36JK and L Keys which you may use in
- 00:42:38editorial um you can also use those here
- 00:42:41those three keys will allow you to move
- 00:42:43forward and back using J moves back L
- 00:42:47moves forward if you hold K and L
- 00:42:51together you'll move in slow motion
- 00:42:52forward K and J together move slow
- 00:42:55motion back and of course holding okay
- 00:42:57and just tapping um L and J will move a
- 00:43:00frame at a time so it's just easy
- 00:43:02navigation just in case you want to go
- 00:43:04through this a little quicker um this
- 00:43:06happens to be uh another philli shot
- 00:43:09this is where he actually starts talking
- 00:43:10so command X move that down command V to
- 00:43:13paste back up and I'm just going to tap
- 00:43:15my down arrow to get to that next shot
- 00:43:17now I believe zoom in a little bit this
- 00:43:20is a
- 00:43:21Milana nope that's Philip too so let's
- 00:43:24move that down command X down page paste
- 00:43:27back up what's this
- 00:43:30one okay so this one's actually Milana
- 00:43:33it stays where it
- 00:43:35is identify the person on the still aana
- 00:43:38let's keep going how's that possible
- 00:43:42okay that's Philip command X down and
- 00:43:44paste back up as you can see you can
- 00:43:47just roll through these I can even do it
- 00:43:50in Fast Forward okay this is still
- 00:43:51Phillip so Philip's going to need to go
- 00:43:53and I believe that quite a few of these
- 00:43:55next clips are Philip these next most of
- 00:43:58the shots except for this last one are
- 00:44:00all Phillips and so one of the things we
- 00:44:02can do is we can also select them all at
- 00:44:04once if I select all of those if I drag
- 00:44:08across and select and hit command X I
- 00:44:10can grab all those at one time move them
- 00:44:12down get them to the right track and
- 00:44:14paste and so now I've just laid all
- 00:44:16those into the track and we're just to
- 00:44:18the end the last shot this is actually
- 00:44:20Phillip I need to select that track
- 00:44:22first cut and paste so this is just one
- 00:44:26scene but as you can see you can get
- 00:44:28pretty fast in navigating and pasting
- 00:44:30and moving things around to do your
- 00:44:32dialoges editing very quickly um one of
- 00:44:35the things I'd like to do is I'm going
- 00:44:37to break this floating window out and
- 00:44:39hide my
- 00:44:40meters and i' like to actually color
- 00:44:42these tracks to make them a little more
- 00:44:44identifiable and so you know one of the
- 00:44:46things we could do here is let's just
- 00:44:48make this top track um I could make this
- 00:44:52orange and then Philips track yellow but
- 00:44:55what I'm doing is right clicking on the
- 00:44:57header and then going down to the color
- 00:45:00and choosing whichever color I
- 00:45:02want okay so once you've split your
- 00:45:04dialogue one of the things you need to
- 00:45:05do then is evaluate it and see how you
- 00:45:07did and also listen to it and see how it
- 00:45:10sounds in case there's any issues this
- 00:45:11is your time to really focus on it and
- 00:45:13start coming up with your hit list of
- 00:45:15things you actually have to work on or
- 00:45:17areas that you need to go in and um
- 00:45:20adjust the edit or trim or areas that
- 00:45:22might need some additional help you know
- 00:45:24as you're playing and listening and
- 00:45:26trying to focus on your Clips when your
- 00:45:28playhead gets to the end of the timeline
- 00:45:30what does it do it doesn't fall off the
- 00:45:33end of the world it redraws itself and
- 00:45:36just shows up on the other side which is
- 00:45:37a little bit jarring if you're trying to
- 00:45:39get into a Zone and really listen to the
- 00:45:41sound and get a feel for what's going on
- 00:45:43so one of the things you can do is you
- 00:45:45can actually fix the playhead and then
- 00:45:47it will scroll underneath which works
- 00:45:48really well and so right here in the
- 00:45:50view options you will see that your
- 00:45:53timeline view options you have something
- 00:45:54right here that's the fixed playhead and
- 00:45:56if you select that what that will do is
- 00:45:59that will now fix it so that the
- 00:46:00timeline will now scroll underneath um
- 00:46:03and let's say I want to find a
- 00:46:04particular spot and start playing but
- 00:46:06notice that you can reposition it when
- 00:46:08you want to by grabbing the play head or
- 00:46:11you can actually move the the timeline
- 00:46:13by grabbing the ruler if you want to
- 00:46:15scrub that but I'm just going to play it
- 00:46:17from here and just show you this is how
- 00:46:20I can kind of look and watch I could
- 00:46:22even put this up in my meters if I
- 00:46:24wanted to and watch it up here and focus
- 00:46:26on my dialogue tracks and listening the
- 00:46:29hyperight core came out a few days ago
- 00:46:32we came out of cryome and we've been
- 00:46:35trying to fix it since it happened we
- 00:46:38went space walking okay and right there
- 00:46:40I noticed there's an issue so this is
- 00:46:42one of those things is as I hear it I
- 00:46:44can find it I can see it really easily
- 00:46:45and I'm going to go ahead and fix that
- 00:46:47or at least mark it and so one of the
- 00:46:49things you can do is you noticed that I
- 00:46:51had changed the clip the track color a
- 00:46:53few times by just right clicking on the
- 00:46:55track header and when I right click the
- 00:46:58track header I can change the color but
- 00:46:59you can also color clips and if you do a
- 00:47:02clip color that's going to um take
- 00:47:05precedent over the track color so that
- 00:47:07way it will stay there and you can have
- 00:47:09both as a guide and so in this case um
- 00:47:12instead of changing the entire track I'm
- 00:47:14going to change the color of this
- 00:47:16particular clip so I'm just going to
- 00:47:17right click on that this is the one that
- 00:47:19has an issue and I'm going to make it
- 00:47:21just green so it'll stand out it makes
- 00:47:24it a little bit easier for me to see
- 00:47:25that I also so assuming I played through
- 00:47:28the entire scene and I've listened
- 00:47:30everything this is really something I
- 00:47:31want to work on first so I'm going to go
- 00:47:33over here and turn off my fixed
- 00:47:35playhead and I'm ready to start work
- 00:47:37here I'm going to just zoom in a little
- 00:47:39bit and I could use my mouse to zoom as
- 00:47:43you can see Zoom really easily with that
- 00:47:45middle Mouse wheel or I can command and
- 00:47:49use minus and equals to zoom in but this
- 00:47:51is the area that I'm having a little bit
- 00:47:53of trouble with this is where I heard
- 00:47:55that there was a problem so now I'm
- 00:47:56going to to try to fix this just doing a
- 00:47:58little bit of trimming and uh just
- 00:48:01trying to clean it up one of the nice
- 00:48:03things about doing your cleanup is you
- 00:48:05notice that as you hover over the edges
- 00:48:07of the clip you will see that you're
- 00:48:11instead of just getting an arrow I'm now
- 00:48:12getting something that is showing me
- 00:48:14that's a trim tool and on the fair Light
- 00:48:16page if I click the end of this clip it
- 00:48:18shows me the entire thing all of the
- 00:48:20handles and as you can see I can very
- 00:48:23easily see that a word was cut off I'm
- 00:48:25able to extend that and release and now
- 00:48:28I have you know whatever was at the end
- 00:48:30of this clip plus I have the beginning
- 00:48:32one so it was very easy for me to trim
- 00:48:34that at the end of this one there's also
- 00:48:37an issue I'll just play
- 00:48:39that so he just has a partial word there
- 00:48:42walk by the way did you see how I took
- 00:48:45my mouse and I walked all the way back
- 00:48:47here clicked so that I could play
- 00:48:49something again walking well we also
- 00:48:52have a shortcuts to be able to play
- 00:48:54again anytime you've played something
- 00:48:55you just want to play the exact same
- 00:48:57thing again it's the option to listen
- 00:49:00again or option L alt L if you're on a
- 00:49:03PC and so I'll just hit option L and it
- 00:49:05will automatically play that again just
- 00:49:08two hours ago as many times as I want
- 00:49:10option l space walking and it'll let me
- 00:49:13hear that now another op option that we
- 00:49:15have when you want to listen to a
- 00:49:17particular area instead of just using
- 00:49:19your playhead we can also create a range
- 00:49:22and you can do that by marking in and
- 00:49:24out points or you can actually drag a
- 00:49:26range and in this case I'll drag a range
- 00:49:28using our range selection tool um if I
- 00:49:31zoom in here you'll see we have a range
- 00:49:33tool and we also have an arrow tool up
- 00:49:36to now we've been only using this
- 00:49:37selection Arrow tool but over here is
- 00:49:40our range tool the shortcut is R so a
- 00:49:43for the arrow tool and R for our range
- 00:49:48tool now if I select the range tool what
- 00:49:50that will do is that will allow me to
- 00:49:54select a range of anything I want to
- 00:49:55just drag across it automatically those
- 00:49:57elements are selected I could actually
- 00:49:59delete them cut copy paste that sort of
- 00:50:01thing but what else is nice is you see
- 00:50:03how it marks these in and out points
- 00:50:05here it marked a range and I can use
- 00:50:07that range for playback and to play a
- 00:50:11range if I just hit the space bar it's
- 00:50:13just going to start moving the playhead
- 00:50:15from its position wherever it happens to
- 00:50:17be but if I use option and the forward
- 00:50:20slash which is directly above that
- 00:50:22option key it will start playback of
- 00:50:26just my range and to take that one step
- 00:50:30further if you look up here in the
- 00:50:32toolbar here in your transport controls
- 00:50:35you will see that we have a loop button
- 00:50:36if you turn that on once that's engaged
- 00:50:39then it will Loop that playback you want
- 00:50:42space
- 00:50:43walking okay and so then I can really
- 00:50:46hear what the issue happens to be now
- 00:50:47once I'm done with my range and I've set
- 00:50:49it I'll just press a to go back to my
- 00:50:51selection tool and that way I won't be
- 00:50:53doing anything or changing my range
- 00:50:55because when you create a
- 00:50:57range if I create a range and click off
- 00:51:00of that range anywhere else it erases
- 00:51:02the range so if I select a range and go
- 00:51:05back to my arrow then I click anywhere
- 00:51:08and that range does not go away until I
- 00:51:10clear it it's only in andout points is
- 00:51:13really what's there so if you want to
- 00:51:15clear those in andout points you can go
- 00:51:17up here um it's in the mark menu clear
- 00:51:20in and out or option X and it'll clear
- 00:51:23those so it's just getting used to
- 00:51:24marking things and switching between two
- 00:51:28different tools I can still do my loot
- 00:51:31playback option for
- 00:51:32Slash and I can listen to this little
- 00:51:34area and I realized that there's
- 00:51:36something in here I need to fix and so
- 00:51:37as I look at it there's a partial word
- 00:51:39there that I don't want I'll just dial
- 00:51:41that back and it's gone okay so I can
- 00:51:43easily do that I can even add little
- 00:51:45Fades here if I need to to or trim some
- 00:51:48of the breath sounds if I want to make
- 00:51:49it a little less obvious in any of these
- 00:51:52to kind of clean them up so that's just
- 00:51:54some Basics as far as the dialogue
- 00:51:56editing goes to clear my range um but
- 00:52:01other things that we have to worry about
- 00:52:02once we have the trim once we have
- 00:52:04adjusted this and once everything is set
- 00:52:06up and it's like okay now what what's
- 00:52:08the next step I've got everybody on
- 00:52:10their own track is the next thing you
- 00:52:11have to worry about is the levels
- 00:52:13everybody cares about the levels and we
- 00:52:14really need to make sure that all of
- 00:52:15these levels are good and you know if
- 00:52:18you need a guideline we actually have
- 00:52:20meters everywhere that are telling
- 00:52:22always the same story you want your
- 00:52:24dialogue look for the yellow yellow
- 00:52:26yellow for dialogue in fact that's one
- 00:52:28of the reasons I use the yellow color
- 00:52:29often in the tracks is yellow is going
- 00:52:32to be a nice solid color obviously
- 00:52:34there's more details than that but I'm
- 00:52:36going to bring up my mixer and as you
- 00:52:39can see there'll be meters across the
- 00:52:41top there's meters in the mixer and
- 00:52:43there's even meters on every single
- 00:52:44track and they're always showing you
- 00:52:46those levels and so when the levels are
- 00:52:48lower those are going to be green
- 00:52:50yellow's going to be right there near
- 00:52:52the middle which is going to be the area
- 00:52:53that you really want your dialogue to be
- 00:52:55somewhere between - 10 -5 DB um and then
- 00:52:59of course if it gets a little bit too
- 00:53:01hot anything that's getting too loud
- 00:53:02that's going to start showing red a
- 00:53:04little bit you can get away with if it
- 00:53:06gets too loud obviously that's going to
- 00:53:07be too much and so I can look at these
- 00:53:10clips let's just look at amel's these
- 00:53:12two clips on her track I'm soloing her
- 00:53:14track let's select her track and I'm
- 00:53:17just going to zoom in on that a little
- 00:53:19bit so we can focus on these two clips
- 00:53:21right here and let's just see what those
- 00:53:23levels look like now I could play them
- 00:53:26watch your notice I have meters here and
- 00:53:28here and on the right and as I play
- 00:53:30those you can see that the levels are
- 00:53:32low I can mute my playback and I can
- 00:53:35scrub my playhead over that and I can
- 00:53:36still see the levels are low so how do I
- 00:53:38make those levels louder couple of ways
- 00:53:40I can do that I can drag this bar up and
- 00:53:44down right there on the clip I can
- 00:53:46deselect that track if you want it makes
- 00:53:48it easier to see I can drag that up and
- 00:53:50down and remember if you would like to
- 00:53:52see the outline on your waveforms you
- 00:53:54can always go back in and turn that
- 00:53:55outline on if if you prefer to see an
- 00:53:57outline on them you can easily do that
- 00:53:59that was one of those options and as I
- 00:54:02raise and lower these levels notice it's
- 00:54:04showing me how much change I'm applying
- 00:54:07right there in the tool tip as you can
- 00:54:09see and so I'm just going to raise it up
- 00:54:11but I can do that and then if I scrub
- 00:54:13over it notice that I'm still looking
- 00:54:15for it to be nice and yellow just
- 00:54:17bringing it up and now I can see that
- 00:54:19it's yellow I'm going to turn this off
- 00:54:20and play it a to identify the person I'm
- 00:54:23speaking with okay and now I can hear it
- 00:54:26and I can also see that those levels are
- 00:54:27in the yellow which is what I was
- 00:54:29looking for right and so I did that one
- 00:54:31but now I want to show you just
- 00:54:32something else that we can um use as a
- 00:54:35guide now I mentioned the levels that
- 00:54:37you're aiming for when you're working
- 00:54:38with your dialogue is going to be
- 00:54:39somewhere um and that the peak the
- 00:54:41average right where that sound is going
- 00:54:43to sit is going to be somewhere between
- 00:54:45-10 and -15 and decb and that would be
- 00:54:50um right here on these meters and like I
- 00:54:52said that's going to show up in the
- 00:54:54yellow I'm going to hide my
- 00:54:57I'm just resize these a little bit um if
- 00:55:00I hide my monitoring panel you can see
- 00:55:02this mixer a little bit better and you
- 00:55:04can see that if I were to play this clip
- 00:55:06now watch this I want to select only
- 00:55:08that clip I'll use the range tool select
- 00:55:11that clip by clicking anywhere at the
- 00:55:13bottom of that clip bottom half and you
- 00:55:16notice it selected it and marked it so
- 00:55:18that I can do a loop playback of that
- 00:55:20CLI very EAS speaking option forward
- 00:55:23slash to identify the person I'm
- 00:55:25speaking with
- 00:55:27a to identify the person I'm and as you
- 00:55:29can see it's right there in the yellow
- 00:55:30and there's even these are sticky meters
- 00:55:32so you're going to see that they have
- 00:55:33that that bar across the top is showing
- 00:55:35you your Peaks but then you can also see
- 00:55:37the average levels that nice solid bit
- 00:55:39and so I've got this right where I want
- 00:55:40it to go it could even be maybe a hair
- 00:55:42lower but I'm really really close and we
- 00:55:45also have additional things that we can
- 00:55:47use for this if we'd like to help us
- 00:55:49find these levels even easier and so in
- 00:55:52addition to our meters let's add a
- 00:55:54plugin okay we haven't added a plugin
- 00:55:56yet um let's go over to the effects
- 00:55:58Library okay you've seen the media pool
- 00:56:01you've seen the index let's go to the
- 00:56:02effects library and this is where you
- 00:56:04can access all of the different effects
- 00:56:06that come with d Vinci resolve and in
- 00:56:09this case these are our Fair light
- 00:56:10effects right here our audio effects now
- 00:56:12if you're working with d Vinci resolve
- 00:56:14studio and you have vsd effects or a um
- 00:56:18plugins on your system you can also
- 00:56:20access those from here in this case
- 00:56:23these are all of the different plugins
- 00:56:25that come with um Fair light and in this
- 00:56:27case the one I'm looking for is Believe
- 00:56:28It or Not a meter this is just something
- 00:56:30that's kind of Handy it's not going to
- 00:56:31change our sound but it gives us
- 00:56:33something we can look at and so just
- 00:56:35take this meter and you can put your
- 00:56:38plugins on Clips you can have unlimited
- 00:56:40plugins on a clip or you could put them
- 00:56:42on the entire track up to six and so at
- 00:56:46this moment we're going to put this on
- 00:56:48the Amela Track by just dragging it from
- 00:56:51the effects Library there it is the
- 00:56:52meter and drag it right to her track
- 00:56:54header and release and what that gave
- 00:56:56you is a little meter as you can see now
- 00:56:59this is a sample Peak program level
- 00:57:01meter and so that's going to give you
- 00:57:02the same kind of readout that what
- 00:57:04you're getting over here and this will
- 00:57:06clearly show you what the level is of
- 00:57:08this clip so if I start playing it
- 00:57:10you'll see identify the person I'm
- 00:57:11speaking with okay it's showing me that
- 00:57:12the peak is Right aroundus 9 but the
- 00:57:15average is probably right about where I
- 00:57:17want it to be but just in case I'll take
- 00:57:20it down just a little bit try it again a
- 00:57:23to identify the person I'm speaking with
- 00:57:25okay there it is so now it's peeking
- 00:57:27aroundus 11 the averages are still nice
- 00:57:29and
- 00:57:31yellow 8 identify the person I'm okay so
- 00:57:34that's all working exactly the way I
- 00:57:36want it to so that's great and because
- 00:57:38I've added this plugin to a track you'll
- 00:57:40notice that here in the mixer you can
- 00:57:43see there's the plugin right there you
- 00:57:44can see it right there um I can even
- 00:57:46delete this if I wanted to I don't and
- 00:57:48if I were to close this so I don't see
- 00:57:50it anymore and I want to bring it back
- 00:57:52any time that interface I just have to
- 00:57:54come over here to the mixer and I can
- 00:57:56just click this button right there the
- 00:57:58controls and it will automatically bring
- 00:57:59that back up so very easy for me to work
- 00:58:02with that right there okay so now that
- 00:58:07um I've checked the levels on that
- 00:58:09particular clip I'm going to bring this
- 00:58:10back up let's do one more um as you can
- 00:58:12see I want to adjust this one as well
- 00:58:14now I'd go through and we'd have to
- 00:58:15adjust the levels on all of the clips
- 00:58:17but now I can kind of eyeball them and
- 00:58:19get them
- 00:58:21close identify the person on the med lab
- 00:58:24okay so both of these are right on so
- 00:58:26I'm good there done with the Mele onest
- 00:58:28track and then I would move on to the
- 00:58:30next track now hers is fairly easy to
- 00:58:31work with Philips is a little bit more
- 00:58:33complicated he has a lot more going on
- 00:58:35in his tracks which is fine but you know
- 00:58:38one of the things you have to think
- 00:58:39about is also adjusting levels when some
- 00:58:41of what they're saying is quieter and
- 00:58:43some of what they're saying is louder
- 00:58:44you might need to actually have key
- 00:58:45frames to change the level within a clip
- 00:58:48and so I could do that right here let's
- 00:58:49look at this um let's see which one of
- 00:58:54his pieces do I want to work with here
- 00:58:57he's got a couple of good ones where he
- 00:58:59you know the levels change within the
- 00:59:01clip um let's
- 00:59:05listen um to his track now I happen to
- 00:59:07have soloed amon's track so I need to
- 00:59:09solo his and unsolo this one so I can
- 00:59:12hear it we came out of cryo and we've
- 00:59:16been trying to fix it okay so this is
- 00:59:19just you know basically him talking so
- 00:59:21that's kind of expected we have this one
- 00:59:23over here what's happening in this one
- 00:59:30you died okay right there he says
- 00:59:33something really important but it's very
- 00:59:35very low he says you died so I'm going
- 00:59:37to bring that up a little bit let's
- 00:59:39listen you died okay we're going to
- 00:59:42definitely have to bring that up a
- 00:59:43little bit but it's also very creaky
- 00:59:45there's some sounds going in there so
- 00:59:46we're going to have to deal with that um
- 00:59:48let's go to the clip right after the
- 00:59:49green one here I'll look at that a
- 00:59:50little bit more I definitely see a lot
- 00:59:52of level differences here so one of the
- 00:59:54things I'll do is I'll just add a key
- 00:59:56frame to that or couple of key frames so
- 00:59:58I can bend it so that I can make the
- 01:00:00levels different from the beginning of
- 01:00:02the clip to the end of the clip and to
- 01:00:04do that simple to add a key frame you
- 01:00:06just hold the option key or ALT key and
- 01:00:09click once so this first section is a
- 01:00:11little low hours ago and the SE second
- 01:00:14section is pretty hot so I'm going to
- 01:00:16just basically option click and add two
- 01:00:18key frames right there in the middle as
- 01:00:20you can see option clicking adds the key
- 01:00:23frames I can then grab the level and
- 01:00:26make them higher lower by using those
- 01:00:29you know to alternate you know how the
- 01:00:32Sound Works so otherwise I'm adjusting
- 01:00:34everything so as you can see I just
- 01:00:35raised that level a bit two hours
- 01:00:38ago boom there's this explosion and it
- 01:00:40surrounded the whole
- 01:00:41ship okay and so that allows me to kind
- 01:00:44of adjust the volume and then you can
- 01:00:46also get in there and really massage
- 01:00:48those levels as much as you need to for
- 01:00:50different elements as you go if I have
- 01:00:52these little Peaks right here that seem
- 01:00:53to be a little bit too loud I can also
- 01:00:56add key frames again option clicking to
- 01:00:59add those key frames and it doesn't
- 01:01:01matter whether the track is the clip is
- 01:01:03selected or not once I've done that I
- 01:01:05can use my arrow tool is fine and notice
- 01:01:07that I can raise or lower just that one
- 01:01:09little section by using key frames and
- 01:01:11so that's very helpful for getting in
- 01:01:13there and massaging your levels and
- 01:01:14getting them just right your goal is to
- 01:01:17adjust the levels of the clips just like
- 01:01:19you might if you were doing color
- 01:01:21grading you want to balance each clip um
- 01:01:23same thing here you want to balance each
- 01:01:25audio clip with within the track so that
- 01:01:27the track stands alone when you go to do
- 01:01:29anything else with that so that's just a
- 01:01:32little bit with the balancing of the
- 01:01:33levels now let's go down and look at one
- 01:01:36other thing we have I need to turn the
- 01:01:37solo off on this track let's bring these
- 01:01:40back
- 01:01:41together and I'm going to hide my
- 01:01:43effects library for now we'll be using
- 01:01:45those again in just a minute I will
- 01:01:46clear my play range and I want to look
- 01:01:49at um normalization because that's one
- 01:01:51other thing you can do it's kind of like
- 01:01:52the auto white balance of um volume
- 01:01:56levels right and instead you're
- 01:01:57basically adjusting the peak levels on a
- 01:02:00particular clip so I'm just going to go
- 01:02:01to the beginning of a dist track we'll
- 01:02:03zoom in a little bit and her first clip
- 01:02:06if I want to check the levels on that
- 01:02:07one of the things I could do is just
- 01:02:08right click on that and
- 01:02:11choose normalize audio level and that
- 01:02:14lets me choose there's my sample Peak
- 01:02:17program notice the default is minus 9
- 01:02:20now why would it be Min - 9 if we want
- 01:02:21all the sound to be between - 10 and -15
- 01:02:25well because 9 is just above 10 right
- 01:02:27and so if that's your Peak chances are
- 01:02:29the average is going to be sitting right
- 01:02:30where you want it so Nine's a pretty
- 01:02:32safe place to start usually so I'll
- 01:02:34leave it at minus 9 U one thing I will
- 01:02:37mention is that our normalization also
- 01:02:39includes um true Peak and you can also
- 01:02:42choose one of your loudness standards as
- 01:02:44well in this case we're just going to
- 01:02:46look at we're balancing our Clips so
- 01:02:48we're just going to do the sample Peak
- 01:02:50program and normalize and that just
- 01:02:52barely adjusted that one I'm going to
- 01:02:55randomly make these different just to
- 01:02:57show you that normalization will um
- 01:03:00adjust no matter what levels those clips
- 01:03:02happen to be I'm going to select all of
- 01:03:04these clips again and this time I'm
- 01:03:07going to right click and choose
- 01:03:08normalize audio levels and because I
- 01:03:10chose more than one clip what that's
- 01:03:12going to allow me to do is I can look at
- 01:03:15them relatively and if I adjust them
- 01:03:18relatively what that's going to do is
- 01:03:19it's going to treat it as if it's one
- 01:03:21clip and whatever the loudest Peak is
- 01:03:23among all those clips that's going to
- 01:03:24dictate how all of the move definitely
- 01:03:26don't want that here so I'm going to go
- 01:03:28to independent and if I choose
- 01:03:30independent and click normalize it's now
- 01:03:32going to look at each one independently
- 01:03:34and balance them out perfectly so these
- 01:03:36should all be right where they need to
- 01:03:38be in the yellow good solid volume
- 01:03:41levels and I'm ready to move on you know
- 01:03:44we've done our dialogue editing we've
- 01:03:46made our adjustments and we've pretty
- 01:03:47much set this up and got everything
- 01:03:50exactly the way we need it to move on to
- 01:03:52the next step which would be a little
- 01:03:54bit more of repair sometimes we have
- 01:03:56things that we just can't fix them with
- 01:03:58what we have for example one of the
- 01:04:01things we can't fix very easily is this
- 01:04:04shot right here I will zoom in this will
- 01:04:06be the one on Philips track just use my
- 01:04:10mouse to zoom
- 01:04:11in and this one unfortunately is one of
- 01:04:15the most important lines of dialogue in
- 01:04:16the entire show and it is very heavily
- 01:04:20I'll bring up my meter so we can see it
- 01:04:22and if you listen
- 01:04:26you died okay he says you died but you
- 01:04:29hear all that weird creaking and stuff
- 01:04:30like that it's totally distracting and
- 01:04:33so one of the things I can do is go
- 01:04:34fishing through my other footage and
- 01:04:36find another take where he did the same
- 01:04:39thing and just replace it and in doing
- 01:04:40so I'm also going to show a few other
- 01:04:42features that we have and a couple
- 01:04:44things are just really really um awesome
- 01:04:47for as you're building your tracks up
- 01:04:49and you're trying to align things um
- 01:04:51being able to overlap them and work
- 01:04:53within layers is really use ful so I'll
- 01:04:56show that right now as you work let's go
- 01:04:59in and um what we'll do is I need to go
- 01:05:02up to the timeline menu and I want to
- 01:05:04choose layered audio editing so up until
- 01:05:08this point we've been doing um the
- 01:05:11default would be to overwrite editing
- 01:05:14which means if you drop a clip on top of
- 01:05:15another clip it's going to Mark put a
- 01:05:17hole in it basically it's where the new
- 01:05:19clip is if you remove the material
- 01:05:21there's a space there where it used to
- 01:05:22be if you do layered audio editing they
- 01:05:25sit on top top of each other in layers
- 01:05:27and become transparent as you drag them
- 01:05:29around so that you can actually overlap
- 01:05:31those waveforms and see them perfectly
- 01:05:33it's a great way to work so I'll show
- 01:05:35you that right now here is the clip that
- 01:05:37we need to adjust and what I'll do is
- 01:05:39I'll drop the new one on aelis track so
- 01:05:42we can work with it from there uh just
- 01:05:44to align it let's go into the media pool
- 01:05:47and I'll find the clip I want is down
- 01:05:49here where it says repair and replace
- 01:05:52and there's only one clip you notice I'm
- 01:05:53looking at things in list view you can
- 01:05:54also look in I con view as well and
- 01:05:57there I can see there's the scratch
- 01:05:58voice over and I have this one right
- 01:06:00here which is the clip I want to work
- 01:06:01with it's already been marked this is
- 01:06:04the sound right here where he says you
- 01:06:05di died okay that's what I want to do
- 01:06:08now by the way you can mark in andout
- 01:06:10points right here in the preview player
- 01:06:11by just marking I for in O for out just
- 01:06:14like you would on editorial just like
- 01:06:16you can in the timeline as well so I've
- 01:06:19got this marked and I want to place it
- 01:06:21right here in the track above so I'm
- 01:06:22just going to drop it right there and
- 01:06:25then I can hi my media pool and so now I
- 01:06:27have the clip sitting right there on top
- 01:06:30roughly in the right place I'll zoom in
- 01:06:32a little bit and as you can see it's the
- 01:06:34same line you can totally tell that it's
- 01:06:37basically the same thing one sitting on
- 01:06:39top of the other now I'm going to turn
- 01:06:41off my layered audio editing for a
- 01:06:43second if I were to drag this on top
- 01:06:46great I just stuck it in that track
- 01:06:47notice it took on the track color um
- 01:06:50actually I'll change the clip color now
- 01:06:52to um let's go with navy just so it
- 01:06:55stands out but look what happened if I
- 01:06:57pull this back out it punched a hole in
- 01:06:59there because it was in overwrite
- 01:07:01editing our default mode so instead I'll
- 01:07:04just undo that I'll still make it Navy
- 01:07:07though that looks good there we go and
- 01:07:09I'm going to go up to um we're going to
- 01:07:11just work our way right up here to the
- 01:07:13timeline and change it to layered audio
- 01:07:15editing mode and by going to layered
- 01:07:19audio editing mode now I can align it
- 01:07:22here as best I can in fact right here
- 01:07:25there's a little magnet as you can see
- 01:07:27this is our snapping magnet that icon
- 01:07:30let me just zoom in there you can see
- 01:07:32right there looks like a magnet I can
- 01:07:33turn that on and off anytime if I need
- 01:07:35to if I turn it off it just allows me to
- 01:07:38move things a little Freer it's not
- 01:07:39going to try to snap them to markers or
- 01:07:41clips and then I'm going to drop it
- 01:07:43right down on top of the other one look
- 01:07:44at that I can absolutely see both
- 01:07:47waveforms at the exact same time and I
- 01:07:49can really line those up beautifully
- 01:07:51just like that when I release that I
- 01:07:53know those are ins syct I don't even
- 01:07:54have to look at those to know that I
- 01:07:56just line those up very nicely and once
- 01:07:59it's sitting there then I can always
- 01:08:01extend it make it a little bit longer if
- 01:08:02I wanted to on either side I can even
- 01:08:05add Fades as you can with any clip by
- 01:08:07just dragging up at the top notice any
- 01:08:09clip you hover over you can
- 01:08:11automatically add a fade and as you can
- 01:08:13see because it's sitting on top of
- 01:08:15another clip it's actually doing a nice
- 01:08:17cross fade there to the clip beneath it
- 01:08:20if I play this you died okay you can see
- 01:08:23that it's working perfectly I'm I'm
- 01:08:25going to back that up zoom out a little
- 01:08:28bit and I'd like to show you what the
- 01:08:29layers look like so if I go up here to
- 01:08:31the view
- 01:08:32menu I can come down to where it says
- 01:08:34show audio track layers it's in the view
- 01:08:37menu it's just a way of viewing your
- 01:08:39timeline and now you can actually see
- 01:08:41there's one clip sitting on top of the
- 01:08:42other clip inside of track layers okay
- 01:08:46they're both still there it just I never
- 01:08:48got rid of the first one it's just got a
- 01:08:50clip sitting on top of it I'll go back
- 01:08:51to the view menu and now turn that off
- 01:08:55and as I said I can extend this as much
- 01:08:57as I needed to and play it back you
- 01:08:59died okay and there it is so those are
- 01:09:02just some of the things we can do to
- 01:09:04kind of for repair couple of other
- 01:09:06things that might come in handy um for
- 01:09:09fixing up your Clips so let's come over
- 01:09:11and to go into the media pool back to my
- 01:09:13timelines and I'm in list View and I'm
- 01:09:16actually going to go to a little bit
- 01:09:17further um timeline um these are all
- 01:09:20different progresses of progressive
- 01:09:22timelines of the things that we've been
- 01:09:23doing all along and so now now I'm down
- 01:09:25to the point where I'd like to show a
- 01:09:27little bit of repair so I'm going to
- 01:09:29just double click on this particular
- 01:09:31timeline to open up and this is outside
- 01:09:33of the main um scene that we were
- 01:09:34working on and here you're going to see
- 01:09:37just a couple of examples of issues that
- 01:09:39we run into where we can use our plugins
- 01:09:41to kind of do some repairs that you
- 01:09:43can't do with a mouse and keyboard so
- 01:09:45let's go over to the media pool and I'm
- 01:09:47going to actually hide that don't need
- 01:09:48it make this fit a little bit better
- 01:09:50this first clip has a very common issue
- 01:09:53and in fact I'm going to bring up the
- 01:09:54effects Library so we can see that um
- 01:09:57and the issue that we have is there's a
- 01:10:00hum in the background in fact if I play
- 01:10:02this may may not hear it days ago um if
- 01:10:06you can't hear it right now I will make
- 01:10:08sure that you hear it by turning up the
- 01:10:10volume so I'm going to turn this up but
- 01:10:12I will also Mark an out point on that so
- 01:10:14it's only going to play this little
- 01:10:16section I marked o for out and I'd like
- 01:10:19to zoom in on that a little bit and I'm
- 01:10:22going to turn up the volume level by
- 01:10:23just cranking that up by the way you can
- 01:10:26use shortcuts to raise and lower the
- 01:10:28volume as well if the clip happens to be
- 01:10:30selected and the shortcuts for those are
- 01:10:33in the time uh let's see where are they
- 01:10:36they are in the clip menu audio to
- 01:10:39increase or decrease
- 01:10:41levels if the clip is selected so in
- 01:10:45this case I just drag that up so now
- 01:10:47it's nice and loud and you'll
- 01:10:49hear there's that power line hum you can
- 01:10:51hear it that's a very common sound that
- 01:10:53you'll get um
- 01:10:55if you ever plugged in an amplifier you
- 01:10:57know what that sound is that is a 60 HZ
- 01:11:00Powerline um sound I'm just going to put
- 01:11:03that back notice that when I raise the
- 01:11:04volume of a clip by just double clicking
- 01:11:06on that volume line it does reset that
- 01:11:09level now if I want to remove that sound
- 01:11:12I'm going to add a plugin to the clip
- 01:11:15itself I don't have to add this to the
- 01:11:17to the mixer in fact I don't even need
- 01:11:19my mixer showing and what I'm going to
- 01:11:21do is I'm going to come over here to my
- 01:11:23dehmer and just drag that right onto the
- 01:11:26clip as I mentioned you can have
- 01:11:27unlimited plugins on a clip so by just
- 01:11:29dropping that on there now it's put the
- 01:11:31DH Hummer right there on the clip if I
- 01:11:34select the clip now I can play that I'm
- 01:11:37just going to play that
- 01:11:38section or I can do the entire clip I'll
- 01:11:41get my range tool select the entire clip
- 01:11:44and play the whole thing the home is
- 01:11:46still there and I can see it it's a very
- 01:11:48healthy home but you notice that in r d
- 01:11:50Hummer interface you will see that it
- 01:11:53has two presets one's for
- 01:11:55zoom in on that one is for 50 htz which
- 01:11:58would be if you were in Europe um and 60
- 01:12:01htz would be if you're in the US so
- 01:12:03depending on where you live in the world
- 01:12:05um you're going to be either 50 or 60
- 01:12:08hertz and so we have a preset for both
- 01:12:09I'm just going to hit 60 hertz to fix
- 01:12:11that a few days ago play that and it
- 01:12:13should have cleaned it up pretty quickly
- 01:12:15I can adjust the amount as needed in
- 01:12:17fact you can drag that amount all the
- 01:12:19way if you wanted to and that's going to
- 01:12:20take all of that sound out and then just
- 01:12:23kind of slly back it off as needed and
- 01:12:26if you're wondering what are these
- 01:12:28other areas these notches that you're
- 01:12:31seeing um each of those that's what's
- 01:12:32being reduced that's the different
- 01:12:34frequencies that are being reduced and
- 01:12:36if you notice these are the harmonics
- 01:12:38you just keep multiplying the initial
- 01:12:40sound so 60 Herz so the next one would
- 01:12:42be 120 and then so on that's where
- 01:12:45you're going to get those harmonics and
- 01:12:46you might need to include those as
- 01:12:48you're working with your filtering and
- 01:12:49that's why that's there they all work
- 01:12:51together to kind of achieve our goal and
- 01:12:53then once you're finished we now have
- 01:12:56dealt with that particular noise and it
- 01:12:58is better thank goodness right now one
- 01:13:01of the things that once you've added a
- 01:13:03plug-in or multiple plugins to a clip if
- 01:13:05you actually want to play it back
- 01:13:07without any processing you can
- 01:13:09rightclick and choose to Cache that
- 01:13:12audio effect notice right there you can
- 01:13:14bounce it which will actually bake it
- 01:13:16into a new clip it'll render a new clip
- 01:13:18with the effects on it or just cache and
- 01:13:20so I just clicked cache audio effect
- 01:13:23you'll notice it now shows a little drop
- 01:13:25drive there so and this is the clip with
- 01:13:28the plugin cached you can see it's much
- 01:13:31cleaner than it was before if I right
- 01:13:34click I can always uncheck the cache and
- 01:13:36then it will show it to me it's still
- 01:13:38going to sound the same either way it's
- 01:13:39just what I'm actually able to hear and
- 01:13:42and um see in my waveform how it's
- 01:13:44reflecting it okay one other thing while
- 01:13:47I've got this clip selected is let's go
- 01:13:48over to the inspector because the
- 01:13:50inspector will show you information
- 01:13:52about anything that you happen to have
- 01:13:54selected and so this case if I Des if I
- 01:13:56select this clip it's showing me
- 01:13:58information about that particular clip
- 01:14:00including the effects that have been
- 01:14:02applied to it so all you have to do is
- 01:14:04click on that effects Tab and now you'll
- 01:14:07see that there's my dehmer plug-in and I
- 01:14:11can actually open up the controls for
- 01:14:13that any time by just going into the
- 01:14:15effects and I can set that up I can even
- 01:14:16turn it on and off if I wanted to from
- 01:14:18here or back on the controls I'm going
- 01:14:21to hide my inspector and as you can see
- 01:14:23this is with it came out of crime and
- 01:14:25without we' trying to fix it the
- 01:14:29plugin going to go ahead and close that
- 01:14:32up and so that's the first one we
- 01:14:34finished that let's move over here the
- 01:14:36last um plugin that I want to show you
- 01:14:38and then we're going to try one more
- 01:14:39thing and that's actually applying what
- 01:14:41we just learned on a real world project
- 01:14:43is I'm going to go down to this lower
- 01:14:45track select that clip with my range
- 01:14:47tool so it's already marked it and if I
- 01:14:50play any of this what you're going to
- 01:14:51hear is this is a very scratchy sounding
- 01:14:53track a Iana
- 01:14:56Newton yes now I don't know how well you
- 01:14:59can hear it if I turn this up you're
- 01:15:00going to see there's quite a bit of
- 01:15:01noise in here but there's some kind of
- 01:15:03scratchiness to that that makes it
- 01:15:04completely unacceptable for playback I
- 01:15:06could never turn this in Philip
- 01:15:08ma Philip ma do you hear all that noise
- 01:15:12back there now this what we have is our
- 01:15:14noise reduction will actually help you
- 01:15:16um reduce all different types of noise
- 01:15:18in this case we just want to get rid of
- 01:15:20this particular sound what's in between
- 01:15:22the dialogue and then leave the dialogue
- 01:15:25so the trick to that is I'm going to
- 01:15:26zoom in and I'm going to set a range for
- 01:15:29just part of the clip right I don't need
- 01:15:31all of it I just need some of it a place
- 01:15:33where there's noise so I just dragged a
- 01:15:35little range right there I'm going to
- 01:15:37turn this way up so I can really hear it
- 01:15:39right and now if I
- 01:15:42listen that's the noise I'm trying to
- 01:15:44avoid do you hear that there's a lot of
- 01:15:46that little crackly sound in there now
- 01:15:48obviously you shouldn't have to turn it
- 01:15:49loud to hear
- 01:15:52it but I just turned it way up to make
- 01:15:55sure that everybody heard what we're
- 01:15:56dealing with so let's use our noise
- 01:15:58reduction I'm going to come down here to
- 01:16:00the noise reduction plugin and I'm going
- 01:16:02to drop that right on the clip now the
- 01:16:04noise reduction gives you two options
- 01:16:06for reducing noise I can hide my effects
- 01:16:09Library the two options that we have for
- 01:16:12reducing noise one of them is manual
- 01:16:13mode which basically will learn a noise
- 01:16:15profile you tell it what to learn and
- 01:16:17that's what it removes sort of like
- 01:16:18using a key when you're working with
- 01:16:21images you know remove this color in
- 01:16:23this case it's remove this sound profile
- 01:16:26so to do that just make sure you're in
- 01:16:28manual mode and then I'm going to press
- 01:16:30this learn key and just play some of my
- 01:16:33noise I'll turn it up a little louder
- 01:16:35just to make sure it gets a nice
- 01:16:38profile as you can see that crackling
- 01:16:40noise you see the white is the actual
- 01:16:42sound the purple is what it's reading as
- 01:16:44the profile and so if I turn off learn
- 01:16:46that's what it's going to keep so there
- 01:16:49you go so that is the part that we have
- 01:16:50to work with um and just make sure if
- 01:16:54you are playing looped playback and you
- 01:16:56have it cranked up really loud just only
- 01:16:58play Loop playback option forward slash
- 01:17:00I'm going to double click on um to reset
- 01:17:04those levels and now that my noise
- 01:17:05profile is there I can clear the
- 01:17:07range and let's just play that clip and
- 01:17:10it should sound pretty good Amana
- 01:17:12Newton yes Philip Ma so the noise is
- 01:17:17gone now if I'm doing too much if I'm
- 01:17:19taking out too much noise I can always
- 01:17:20adjust my wet dry level dry means no
- 01:17:23effect has been applied and wet means
- 01:17:25fully applied and anywhere in between is
- 01:17:28how much of the effect is going on to
- 01:17:29the clip now as you can see um one of
- 01:17:32the things that we need to look at here
- 01:17:35is I want to try the auto mode because
- 01:17:38auto sounds so easy right let's go ahead
- 01:17:39and select it and change it to now Auto
- 01:17:42speech mode and now what Auto speech
- 01:17:44mode will do is it will um listen
- 01:17:47automatically and it's going to find the
- 01:17:49voice and actually extract it from any
- 01:17:50other background noise and so I just
- 01:17:52switched it over to Auto speech mode and
- 01:17:55as I play notice it will adjust
- 01:17:56automatically and just strip that sound
- 01:17:58out for me so sometimes you need
- 01:18:01multiple plugins and sometimes you can
- 01:18:03get away with just one some if
- 01:18:04something's really noisy I might need to
- 01:18:06use two noise reductions maybe I'll do a
- 01:18:08noise print first manual and then add in
- 01:18:11auto mode but that is how I can get this
- 01:18:13to work so those are two examples of
- 01:18:16some of our repair plugins just want to
- 01:18:18show you how to put some of these things
- 01:18:20together in a real world project because
- 01:18:22this is something that happens all the
- 01:18:24time so let's come over here
- 01:18:26to the um a different timeline I'm going
- 01:18:29to use this repairs this is a real clip
- 01:18:33from a real project I'm actually going
- 01:18:35to go to the edit page for the first
- 01:18:36time just click on the edit button and
- 01:18:38as you can see here I am on the edit
- 01:18:40page as you can see the the trip to get
- 01:18:43from editorial to audio Post in D Vinci
- 01:18:46resolve is very fast right you click a
- 01:18:47single button I'm already there in audio
- 01:18:49post well this is what this particular
- 01:18:51clip looks like in editorial and if I
- 01:18:53were on the edit page and if I was the
- 01:18:56editor playing it this is what an editor
- 01:18:58would see in their tool set visuals look
- 01:19:01great but
- 01:19:04listen a audio is not
- 01:19:08great um and most of the sound is only
- 01:19:11coming out of one speaker and obviously
- 01:19:14there's a problem but it's not very
- 01:19:16obvious from here now let's go back to
- 01:19:17the fair Light page how do you switch to
- 01:19:19the fairlight page of course just click
- 01:19:20the fair light button at the bottom of
- 01:19:22your screen and now we're on the the
- 01:19:24fairlight page now right away when you
- 01:19:27look at the fairlight page we see all of
- 01:19:29the channels of a clip right there in
- 01:19:31the track and so as you could see this
- 01:19:32top track this is this looks like
- 01:19:34garbage this particular upper channel
- 01:19:37here is barely any sound at all it might
- 01:19:39have been a mic turned on but there's
- 01:19:42clearly no usable sound in there but
- 01:19:44it's being mixed with the good mic right
- 01:19:47plus we're in a kitchen that has
- 01:19:49refrigerators and all kinds of other
- 01:19:51things so who knows what all is creating
- 01:19:52the noise so one of the first things we
- 01:19:54can do is we can just change the channel
- 01:19:56mapping of this so that instead of this
- 01:19:59being a stereo clip with two channels
- 01:20:01let's just pair it down to the one
- 01:20:03channel we actually want Channel left
- 01:20:06the left channel is one the right
- 01:20:08channel that looks decent is channel two
- 01:20:10so how do you change those attributes
- 01:20:12let me go to my arrow tool um and just
- 01:20:15with your arrow tool a for Arrow I'm
- 01:20:17just going to right click on that clip
- 01:20:18and choose clip
- 01:20:21attributes and when you go to clip
- 01:20:23attributes this shows me that it's
- 01:20:24stereo and it shows me both of my
- 01:20:26microphones that just happens to be this
- 01:20:28clip if it was a six Channel clip it
- 01:20:30would tell me it was a six Channel clip
- 01:20:31and I'd see all those channels so what I
- 01:20:33want to do is change it to Mono so it's
- 01:20:34only a single Channel but I don't want
- 01:20:37channel one I only want channel two
- 01:20:40there you go so by making this channel
- 01:20:42two and making it model you notice that
- 01:20:45it'll just take it a second to redraw
- 01:20:47that and now I should be able to hear
- 01:20:50this um I should be able to hear it and
- 01:20:52now I'm only getting the single Channel
- 01:20:54that I needed now I also want to change
- 01:20:56my um audio as you can see this track is
- 01:20:59a stereo track and I really need it to
- 01:21:01be a um monot track so you can at any
- 01:21:04time change what type of track you're
- 01:21:05working with too by just right clicking
- 01:21:07the track header going down to where it
- 01:21:10says change track type to mono and now
- 01:21:14my track matches my clip and the clip I
- 01:21:18can actually see it pretty well now
- 01:21:19let's listen to Just the good Channel
- 01:21:25and even listening to this I'm to take I
- 01:21:28can tell that this is very noisy sty you
- 01:21:31hear all kinds of refrigerator sounds
- 01:21:34and things in the background this this
- 01:21:35is pretty noisy so again let's go in and
- 01:21:37use the two tools that we have and how
- 01:21:40easy that will be to work with right so
- 01:21:42as we're looking at repairs one of the
- 01:21:44things I'll do is take my range tool and
- 01:21:46I'll just drag a little range right here
- 01:21:48of some of that
- 01:21:51noise okay that'll work turn this up a
- 01:21:53little bit so I can really hear it I
- 01:21:55don't be afraid because I just option
- 01:21:57forward slash okay that's the
- 01:22:01noise okay that's someone saying and is
- 01:22:04in so I'll just change the end point of
- 01:22:06that I marked a new
- 01:22:08endpoint n still there so let me just
- 01:22:11find a better slice here just when in
- 01:22:14doubt make a new
- 01:22:17Range okay Pure Noise I can hear now I
- 01:22:20also hear a really high-pitch wine um
- 01:22:23again I think that's a refrigerator so
- 01:22:24when whenever I have both noise and some
- 01:22:26kind of hum I'm going to go for the hum
- 01:22:28first so I'm going to go in here to my
- 01:22:30close my media pool get my effects
- 01:22:31library now by the way you don't have to
- 01:22:33close the media pool you can have both
- 01:22:34at the same time media pool will then
- 01:22:36sit on top and the effects will sit at
- 01:22:39the bottom which is fine um in this case
- 01:22:42I don't really need the media pool and
- 01:22:44I'm going to go in here and I'm just
- 01:22:45going to go down and find there's my
- 01:22:46dehmer so I'm going to hit the noise
- 01:22:48first I could apply it to the entire
- 01:22:50track or I could apply it to the clip in
- 01:22:52this case I'll just drop it right on the
- 01:22:54clip here it is here's my D Hummer now
- 01:22:56this is not Powerline hum and again I'm
- 01:23:00listening to this by hitting option
- 01:23:01forward slash that is not power line
- 01:23:04home that's a really high-pitched whiny
- 01:23:06sound so first thing I'll do is I'm
- 01:23:08going to we could just sweep these
- 01:23:10frequencies by dragging frequency I'm
- 01:23:12also going to make the amount really
- 01:23:14high and that way I know I'll hear it
- 01:23:16when that hum goes away or that hissy
- 01:23:19sound goes away
- 01:23:20so I'm going to now walk down stream
- 01:23:27and just right there that high-pitch
- 01:23:29wine feels like it's gone okay that's
- 01:23:32what I was trying to accomplish so now
- 01:23:34that the high pitch sound is gone I'm
- 01:23:36also going to adjust my slope a little
- 01:23:38bit because the main part of his voice
- 01:23:40the meat of his voice is going to be
- 01:23:41right in this section and I'm thinking
- 01:23:43this is a very high pitch sound it's
- 01:23:45probably right there around 400 so I'm
- 01:23:46going to change the slope just like that
- 01:23:49so this swaps the position of the
- 01:23:51harmonics with the fundamental and now
- 01:23:54I'm going to listen here and that high
- 01:23:57pitch wine is gone I could bring this
- 01:23:58amount back a little bit if I wanted to
- 01:24:01but there so that was the first problem
- 01:24:03solved and then the second one what I
- 01:24:05need to do is I need to come in here and
- 01:24:07now we want to do that noise reduction
- 01:24:09now I don't need a range for that I'm
- 01:24:11going to just trust the noise reduction
- 01:24:12will work and drop it onto the clip also
- 01:24:15reset this and I'm going to set it to
- 01:24:17Auto speech mode and just like that I'm
- 01:24:19going to hope that between the two of
- 01:24:21them hello my name is Jamie and today
- 01:24:23I'm
- 01:24:25sounds so as you can see that was
- 01:24:27putting together those different tools
- 01:24:29that we have shown you um and in this
- 01:24:32case just having those repairs ready to
- 01:24:34throw in there and adjust makes a really
- 01:24:36big difference so whether it's one clip
- 01:24:38or a dialogue scene having those uh
- 01:24:41repair plugins ready to use is very
- 01:24:43helpful so I have one last thing to show
- 01:24:47um and it's right here let's go back to
- 01:24:48the media pool idfx library and I'm
- 01:24:51going to show you when you can't use a
- 01:24:53Plugin or when there's something that
- 01:24:54you just have to find a way to get rid
- 01:24:56of sometimes you have to go into the
- 01:24:57sample level to edit something so the
- 01:25:00last example for this um overview is
- 01:25:02going to
- 01:25:03be fixing a music cue now if you've ever
- 01:25:06come across clicks and pops in your
- 01:25:08files you'll notice that it doesn't
- 01:25:10matter if it's dialogue or music or
- 01:25:12whatever it is you can't turn it in if
- 01:25:14it's got some kind of really um loud pop
- 01:25:16that's going to make all the speakers
- 01:25:18pop you know that means you have to get
- 01:25:20in there and find a way to fix it there
- 01:25:21may be some third party plugins at work
- 01:25:23sometimes they do sometimes they don't
- 01:25:25but you can go in there and just dial it
- 01:25:26right out on your waveform using just
- 01:25:30your arrow tool and I'll show you how to
- 01:25:32do that right now so I've opened up this
- 01:25:35music queue and at the beginning of the
- 01:25:38music queue there is a two pop which is
- 01:25:41a single
- 01:25:42frame as you can hear that's a just a
- 01:25:44one KZ tone one frame of that for
- 01:25:47indicating that we are at the beginning
- 01:25:49of a scene or of a show that we're using
- 01:25:52that for sync if I put my playhead over
- 01:25:54over that and zoom in and and continue
- 01:25:56to zoom in you'll see we can really get
- 01:25:58in there pretty far remember left and
- 01:26:00right that's one frame and look at how
- 01:26:03far I've moved into my waveform as I
- 01:26:06continue to zoom I can get all the way
- 01:26:08down to the sample level once you start
- 01:26:11seeing these little boxes you know
- 01:26:12you're looking at it at the sample level
- 01:26:14now in this case that's just a 1 kerz
- 01:26:16tone now we're going to go in there and
- 01:26:18find that issue which happens to be at
- 01:26:20this red marker so I can shift down
- 01:26:22arrow to the red marker zoom in a little
- 01:26:24bit and actually let's play it I want
- 01:26:26you to hear this I'm just going to pull
- 01:26:28this back to the beginning play this
- 01:26:29little piece of music when you hear that
- 01:26:30pop you'll see the meters Flash and
- 01:26:32you'll know you're in trouble and that's
- 01:26:35what we have to fix so let me just play
- 01:26:38[Music]
- 01:26:47it do you hear that that is the sound
- 01:26:50we're trying to Avid that's what we have
- 01:26:52to fix that Pop That also sends your met
- 01:26:56meter spiking and you've probably all
- 01:26:57heard that once before so now that
- 01:26:59you've heard it let's get rid of it put
- 01:27:01my playhead on that red marker zooming
- 01:27:02in this actually only takes a few
- 01:27:04seconds believe it or not so I'm just
- 01:27:06going to come over here zoom in and
- 01:27:08continue to zoom in I just have to keep
- 01:27:11chasing it because we're zoomed in so
- 01:27:13far that we are nowhere near a frame and
- 01:27:16so what I did was I just zoomed into it
- 01:27:18until I finally got to a point notice
- 01:27:21you can redraw it a few times going in
- 01:27:23and out using your Zoom shortcuts till
- 01:27:25you get a space that you can actually
- 01:27:26work with that looks pretty good and so
- 01:27:28why I was doing that was this is the
- 01:27:30glitch that's what it looks like at the
- 01:27:32sample level and so if I want to dial
- 01:27:34that out I can just select right here I
- 01:27:36can select a sample just kind of move my
- 01:27:38mouse make that nice and smooth and I'll
- 01:27:40come over here and do the same thing it
- 01:27:42doesn't have to be perfect just want to
- 01:27:43align it with the ones that were there
- 01:27:44before there you go shift Z I'll zoom
- 01:27:47out and that glitch is gone and if I
- 01:27:50were to play this
- 01:27:56no sign of it now just the percussion
- 01:27:58and so that is working at the sample
- 01:28:01level so thank you very much for
