00:00:00
how are you supposed to actually start
00:00:01
designing characters experienced
00:00:03
character designers seem to pull
00:00:05
incredible ideas out of thin air how do
00:00:07
they even do that how did they even
00:00:09
think of these it seems like magic
00:00:11
doesn't it is it possible to develop
00:00:14
this ability for yourself and how do you
00:00:16
get better at it well don't worry
00:00:18
because it's definitely not magic it's
00:00:20
something far more boring than you might
00:00:23
expect some of you might know how to
00:00:25
improve your drawing skills but you
00:00:27
might not know how you're supposed to
00:00:28
improve your design skills so I'll
00:00:31
explain what exercises I did to improve
00:00:33
my character design work and how I
00:00:34
managed to go from this to this before
00:00:37
we begin let's do a quick recap what
00:00:40
exactly is character design isn't it
00:00:42
just making up pretty outfits well
00:00:44
designing appealing outfits is part of
00:00:46
it but it's not the entire story
00:00:51
although character design is about
00:00:53
visual
00:00:55
communication it's about how much you
00:00:56
can tell about a character just by
00:00:58
looking at them it's telling telling a
00:01:00
story with no words now how do we begin
00:01:03
do we start by Conjuring up all of our
00:01:06
creativity to think of the most original
00:01:08
Super Duper unique idea that's like
00:01:10
never ever been done
00:01:12
before that's not necessarily true many
00:01:16
people think uniqueness is the most
00:01:18
important trait of a design but just
00:01:20
because an idea is unique it doesn't
00:01:23
mean it's good for instance someone once
00:01:25
shared an idea for a character that had
00:01:27
living toenails that moved as snakes
00:01:30
that they could use as Weapons that's
00:01:33
certainly unique but is it good maybe
00:01:36
I'll let you decide instead of that
00:01:38
let's start with a short and unoriginal
00:01:40
prompt perhaps some kind of angelic
00:01:43
night pretty boring right you've seen
00:01:45
this done a million times in fact this
00:01:47
is something that I've done before 3
00:01:49
years ago this is one of my first ever
00:01:52
character designs I'm going to try
00:01:54
redesigning it to see how much my
00:01:55
character design skills have leveled up
00:01:57
instead of worrying so much about
00:01:59
uniqueness we really should be focusing
00:02:01
on the execution how well it tells a
00:02:03
story even a boring idea like this
00:02:06
competently executed can turn into an
00:02:08
amazing character design let's start by
00:02:11
looking at our prompts starting with the
00:02:13
word night in order to visually
00:02:15
communicate the idea of a night we have
00:02:18
to know what they look like then once we
00:02:19
have this information we can use the
00:02:21
elements that we need to communicate
00:02:23
what we want about the character so how
00:02:25
do we get this information obviously by
00:02:29
researching but not just any research
00:02:32
how you do the research is super
00:02:35
important we'll start by looking up
00:02:37
night on Google Images right away one
00:02:40
obvious thing that all these Knights
00:02:42
have in common is that they're all
00:02:43
wearing armor of some kind great that's
00:02:46
a lot of reference images let's try
00:02:48
designing this is how I did my research
00:02:50
in the past but I found that when I
00:02:53
tried to design armor of my own I kept
00:02:54
running into two problems problem one
00:02:59
sometimes my armor would just look way
00:03:00
too close to the reference images it
00:03:03
just felt like I was taking elements
00:03:04
from existing references and putting
00:03:06
them together problem too in order to
00:03:09
avoid the first problem I would try to
00:03:11
not look so hard at the reference images
00:03:13
and invent my own armor but it just
00:03:16
looked bad I didn't really understand
00:03:19
why but it didn't really look like armor
00:03:20
at all I think the problem was that by
00:03:23
just looking at pictures I was gaining
00:03:25
only a superficial understanding of how
00:03:28
armor worked in in order to design
00:03:30
something that looks plausible you need
00:03:33
deeper knowledge even if you're planning
00:03:35
on doing more Fantastical designs
00:03:37
understanding how things work in real
00:03:38
life is key to making believable
00:03:41
character designs and notice that I said
00:03:43
plausible and believable not realistic
00:03:46
we have to believe that they could be
00:03:48
real not that they actually exist your
00:03:51
designs could be as Fantastical as these
00:03:53
or as grounded as these you just need
00:03:56
people to look at them and think yeah
00:03:58
this could actually work so how exactly
00:04:00
do you pull that off you'll need to do
00:04:02
some more indepth research I'll show you
00:04:05
how I did it to help with this I'm going
00:04:07
to be using milanote the sponsor of this
00:04:10
video milanote is a notetaking tool you
00:04:12
can use to organize information for your
00:04:14
projects personally I tend to get really
00:04:17
lost in Long Word documents so I really
00:04:19
like it of course you can use any note
00:04:21
taking app you like but I think milanote
00:04:23
has a lot of convenient features that
00:04:24
makes the research process easier and
00:04:27
more painless if you want to follow
00:04:29
along with my my process you can get
00:04:30
started with Milano for free with the
00:04:32
link down in the description anyway
00:04:34
let's begin our research with European
00:04:36
medieval armor there's tons of different
00:04:38
armor around the world but fantasy draws
00:04:41
a lot of inspiration from medieval armor
00:04:43
so it's a great starting point to start
00:04:46
off we can break down a suit of armor
00:04:47
into individual components the most
00:04:50
important thing to learn about each of
00:04:51
these pieces is how it works each piece
00:04:54
of armor attaches a certain way and is
00:04:56
used for a particular purpose so we're
00:04:59
going to need more than just pictures
00:05:00
for this you're actually going to want
00:05:02
to take some notes I often find that
00:05:04
museum websites are great sources of
00:05:06
information for armor so I really like
00:05:08
adding links to museum pages on my
00:05:10
boards Millan note's pretty easy to use
00:05:12
you can just drag in text Snippets and
00:05:13
images but I also like using the Millan
00:05:15
note web clipper extension for Chrome
00:05:17
because it also includes the sources of
00:05:19
the images and text that I add I find
00:05:21
that pretty handy because going back to
00:05:22
check the source can be really useful
00:05:24
it's also important to do studies when
00:05:26
you have time as well remember as visual
00:05:29
artists there is nothing better than
00:05:31
drawing something and deconstructing it
00:05:33
to really understand how something works
00:05:35
and once you're done with that study you
00:05:36
could just add it to your board anyway
00:05:38
we've done a ton of work so are we done
00:05:41
here can we finally begin our character
00:05:44
design is there anything else we need to
00:05:46
know wait do you remember what the theme
00:05:49
was it was Angelic nights we'll need to
00:05:52
learn a little bit more about how angels
00:05:54
are portrayed to communicate the Angelic
00:05:56
aspect of the design but it's going to
00:05:58
be a bit different from armor because no
00:06:00
one's ever taken a photograph of an
00:06:01
Angel but angels have been the subjects
00:06:03
of paintings for a very long time so
00:06:05
what we can do is research historical
00:06:07
depictions of angels and the symbols
00:06:10
typically associated with them but
00:06:13
besides just the Angels themselves
00:06:15
there's something else related to angels
00:06:17
that I think will be very useful for
00:06:18
this design angels are associated with
00:06:21
religion and therefore churches and
00:06:23
churches are often richly ornamented
00:06:25
with beautiful carvings and in
00:06:27
particular I'm interested in the rock
00:06:30
period of architecture just look at
00:06:32
these beautiful and elegant shapes maybe
00:06:35
I can use some of these in my designs in
00:06:37
particular there's a lot of beautiful
00:06:39
and elegant scroll work delicate
00:06:41
swooping spiral shapes we can use these
00:06:44
shapes to help strengthen the Angelic
00:06:45
theme of our design and of course angels
00:06:48
have wings the first time I did an
00:06:51
Angelic night design I based the Wings
00:06:53
off a Secretary Bird I just think they
00:06:55
look cool which is a valid reason to do
00:06:57
something in a character design
00:07:00
I just think they're neat so I'll be
00:07:02
doing the same thing this time around
00:07:03
perhaps at this point you'll be thinking
00:07:05
this is way too much work for a single
00:07:07
character design am I really expected to
00:07:10
do this every single time I design a
00:07:12
character that's way too much but here's
00:07:15
the thing once you do this research and
00:07:17
this practice you don't throw it away
00:07:18
once you're done with that design you
00:07:20
store all of this information in your
00:07:22
visual library for later if you like
00:07:25
designing fantasy characters you'll find
00:07:27
that you often have to draw armor and
00:07:29
all of that research you just did that's
00:07:31
going to come in really handy expanding
00:07:33
your visual library is one way you can
00:07:35
improve your character design skill so
00:07:37
none of this effort actually goes to
00:07:39
waste by the way don't forget that the
00:07:41
best thing you can do to get better at
00:07:42
something is to actually practice it so
00:07:45
how do you practice character design by
00:07:47
designing characters of course with this
00:07:49
information you just researched try
00:07:51
turning them into Quick character
00:07:52
designs as well the designs don't have
00:07:54
to be clean or colored it just needs to
00:07:56
be clean enough that you understand what
00:07:58
the design is supposed to be
00:08:00
but once in a while it's good to spend a
00:08:01
bit more time on a detail design so
00:08:03
let's go back to the Angelic night for
00:08:05
now one last thing I'd like to cover
00:08:07
before actually beginning to design our
00:08:09
character if you look at our board so
00:08:11
far it looks like they're mostly filled
00:08:13
with photographs or older
00:08:15
paintings but what about existing
00:08:17
character designs Angelic Knight is not
00:08:20
a very original idea so it's been done
00:08:22
tons of times before we can definitely
00:08:25
draw inspiration from these as well but
00:08:27
remember to be careful when using other
00:08:28
artists works there's a risk of
00:08:30
accidentally plagiarizing a portion of
00:08:32
the work even if you're not doing it on
00:08:34
purpose to help prevent this instead of
00:08:36
using these as a reference I create a
00:08:39
mood board I collect some artwork that
00:08:42
captures the feeling of the character I
00:08:44
want to create to avoid the problem of
00:08:47
accidental plagiarism I try to keep the
00:08:49
images fairly small on the board so I
00:08:51
can't quite make out the individual
00:08:53
elements but I can capture the overall
00:08:55
mood in any case this Reser stuff looks
00:08:57
like a lot so don't worry you don't have
00:08:59
have to do it all in one sitting I
00:09:01
personally spread it over a few days
00:09:04
sometimes I have my best ideas while I'm
00:09:05
out and about so it's useful to jot down
00:09:08
quick notes so I don't forget them
00:09:09
fortunately milanote has a mobile app
00:09:11
where you can access all your notes in a
00:09:13
mobile readable format and you can take
00:09:15
down notes and file them away later
00:09:17
thanks again to milanote for sponsoring
00:09:19
this video so now that we finally have
00:09:23
all the information that we need we can
00:09:25
finally start designing we gathered a
00:09:28
ton of references for learning but now
00:09:30
that we're actually drawing we don't
00:09:31
actually have to be looking at too many
00:09:33
of them at once in fact having too much
00:09:35
reference can make your character design
00:09:37
a bit
00:09:38
unfocused so I make a smaller board with
00:09:41
fewer references that I actually look at
00:09:43
while I'm creating my character design
00:09:45
when it comes to character design
00:09:47
research is incredibly important but
00:09:49
it's not the only step there are also
00:09:51
other important steps when it comes to
00:09:52
creating and refining designs but maybe
00:09:55
we'll save that for another video for
00:09:57
now we'll keep it simple we can start by
00:09:59
doing thumbnails which are loose
00:10:01
sketches to help you quickly generate
00:10:02
ideas for your character remember that
00:10:04
thumbnails don't have to look good
00:10:06
they're just there for you to get ideas
00:10:08
and once you get a thumbnail you're
00:10:09
happy with you can start sketching out
00:10:11
your design my old design had some good
00:10:13
ideas and I felt like it was a pretty
00:10:15
grounded design I more or less Drew
00:10:18
realistic armor but added some fantasy
00:10:19
flourishes and patterns on it and that's
00:10:22
not a bad thing at all but this time
00:10:23
around I want to try something a little
00:10:25
bit different and I want to emphasize
00:10:27
the Ethereal and elegant nature of an
00:10:29
Angel so I use thinner and pointier
00:10:32
forms and I try to make the armor look
00:10:33
more Fantastical while still trying to
00:10:36
keep her looking protected I also go for
00:10:38
an asymmetrical design to emphasize the
00:10:40
feeling of dynamism but mostly I do this
00:10:43
cuz I think it might look cool I wasn't
00:10:45
quite sure whether to line art or
00:10:47
painting for this character design but
00:10:48
in the end I went with line work because
00:10:51
I wanted to make it more similar to my
00:10:52
old design so when I put them side by
00:10:54
side I could compare them more directly
00:10:57
so here are some quick tips for keeping
00:10:58
your character design interesting and
00:11:00
appealing number one big medium small
00:11:03
you want to vary up the sizes you use to
00:11:05
keep things interesting this applies for
00:11:07
a lot of different things but in my case
00:11:10
I make sure that all the wings on this
00:11:11
character are different sizes number two
00:11:14
use repeating shapes and forms to make
00:11:15
your design more cohesive in my design I
00:11:18
use a lot of wing shapes and scroll work
00:11:21
to give it that grandiose Angelic
00:11:23
feeling and number three you did a lot
00:11:26
of research so try to make sure that
00:11:28
each of elements is there for a reason
00:11:31
it's fine to not make things completely
00:11:33
realistic all the time but you want them
00:11:35
to at least make sense in the context of
00:11:37
your Universe okay so after cleaning up
00:11:40
and rendering the character this is how
00:11:42
it hang on wait I kind of don't really
00:11:46
like how it looks I don't know about you
00:11:48
but sometimes I just finish a picture
00:11:50
and I'm just not happy with how it looks
00:11:53
I feel like this gold scroll work here
00:11:55
is just so busy and way too noisy and
00:11:59
and these values just aren't grouped
00:12:01
very well but separated into these
00:12:02
awkward chunks I liked how it looked at
00:12:05
the sketch way better to be honest I
00:12:08
think it was kind of a mistake to use a
00:12:10
line art Focus style for this design
00:12:12
with all these intricate shapes and gold
00:12:15
patterns I'm not skilled enough to pull
00:12:17
it off so I went again and tried to
00:12:19
simplify and clean up the gold bits and
00:12:21
refine the shapes just a little and
00:12:23
after those Corrections here's how it
00:12:26
looks to be honest I'm still not that
00:12:28
happy with it but but I think I
00:12:29
definitely at least got better over the
00:12:31
last 3 years maybe I'll be able to make
00:12:33
a design I'm actually happy with in
00:12:35
another 3 years I have a really long way
00:12:38
to go and I still have so much to learn
00:12:40
so I'll keep working hard I hope you
00:12:42
enjoyed this video if you did add the
00:12:44
Subscribe button to your visual Library
00:12:46
thank you so much for watching bye-bye
00:12:49
so let's start I said the word so so so
00:12:51
so we no wait no so so how we so so so
00:12:53
and so
00:12:55
so go to sleep
