00:00:08
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is once again
00:00:10
directed by Tim Burton and stars Michael
00:00:12
Keaton returning as this iconic
00:00:14
character and it's coming out 36 years
00:00:17
after the first one so after a family
00:00:19
tragedy three generations of the Deets
00:00:21
family returned to Winter River still
00:00:24
haunted by Beetle juu Lydia's life is
00:00:26
turned upside down when her teenage
00:00:28
daughter astred accidentally opens the
00:00:31
portal to the afterlife whenever these
00:00:33
sequels come out like decades after the
00:00:35
first one that everyone loves nobody
00:00:37
ever likes it as much as the first one
00:00:39
because they were shown the first one in
00:00:41
their crib and they've seen it 3,000
00:00:44
times and they watched it with a family
00:00:46
member who no longer is alive and they
00:00:48
have memories about that core memories
00:00:50
that have influenced their entire life
00:00:52
and these people are never going to like
00:00:54
a brand new movie that they just saw for
00:00:56
the very first time in a theater filled
00:00:58
with other people more than that first
00:01:00
movie it's just not going to happen it
00:01:01
never happens maybe it does every once
00:01:03
in a while like that movie but it's it's
00:01:07
rare When I Say Never I mean mostly
00:01:10
never which is why I think I'm a good
00:01:12
person to be talking to you about this
00:01:13
movie because I've only seen Beetlejuice
00:01:15
twice I was not allowed to watch it when
00:01:17
I was a kid because the way I was raised
00:01:19
so I saw it for the first time in my 20s
00:01:22
and again like a couple days ago so I
00:01:25
don't have Nostalgia for that movie
00:01:27
although I deeply enjoyed it and thought
00:01:29
it was extremely fun and Michael Keaton
00:01:31
of course is awesome as that character
00:01:33
but my favorite character in the first
00:01:35
movie was actually wona writers Lydia
00:01:38
Deets she felt like a personification of
00:01:41
how I felt as a kid and sometimes still
00:01:43
feel as an adult so I really like seeing
00:01:45
her return in this movie because she has
00:01:47
all of that still clearly likes the same
00:01:50
look but she's also running a paranormal
00:01:52
ghost hunting show which seems like the
00:01:54
modern-day equivalent of exactly what
00:01:56
Lydia Deets would be doing having seen
00:01:58
the trailers for this movie which didn't
00:02:00
do anything for me I have to say this
00:02:02
movie was much better than I thought it
00:02:03
was going to be especially in the amount
00:02:05
of screen time that Beetlejuice actually
00:02:08
has one of the things that shocked me
00:02:09
the most when I saw the first movie
00:02:11
again like I said for the first time as
00:02:13
an adult was just how little Beetlejuice
00:02:16
is actually in the film The Title
00:02:18
Character is only in the movie for a
00:02:20
brief period and he doesn't even really
00:02:22
show up until something like after 45
00:02:24
minutes into the film obviously a
00:02:26
Temptation with a sequel when you know
00:02:27
you have a character that people love
00:02:29
and have loved for like 30 years is to
00:02:32
give you more of that character this
00:02:34
movie has maybe a few more minutes of
00:02:36
screen time for Beetlejuice compared to
00:02:38
the first it's really well balanced and
00:02:40
his appearances liven things up
00:02:43
considerably W not ryer is great once
00:02:45
again I loved seeing her back in this
00:02:47
role but I also really liked the no
00:02:50
longer antagonistic relationship with
00:02:52
Katherine O'Hara's character who of
00:02:54
course is the cliche artist who other
00:02:56
artists are actually terrified of
00:02:58
encountering because she's a miserable
00:03:00
person but Lydia also has a daughter now
00:03:03
played by Jenna Ortega and their
00:03:04
relationship is very strained because
00:03:06
she doesn't believe in the Paranormal
00:03:08
and obviously her mom is this legend of
00:03:10
the Paranormal and that makes things
00:03:12
difficult this is already a lot of
00:03:14
characters and it's enough characters I
00:03:16
think but there's still some stuff going
00:03:17
on Justin thorough plays a manager of
00:03:21
wona Ryder's character who really likes
00:03:23
her but also would like to be further
00:03:25
into her life and he's very creepy and
00:03:27
off-putting purposefully in the role
00:03:30
you've also got William defo in the
00:03:31
afterlife and I won't spoil what he's
00:03:33
doing because I think a lot of the fun
00:03:35
is in the discovery of it but what he
00:03:38
was in real life is impacting what he's
00:03:40
doing in the afterlife and it brought me
00:03:42
a lot of laughs Monica beluchi is in the
00:03:44
film and she has an incredible character
00:03:48
introduction genuinely brought this
00:03:50
gigantic smile to my face and I was so
00:03:52
excited about what she was going to do
00:03:54
in the film which brings me into a few
00:03:55
things I want to talk about the high of
00:03:57
her introduction sustained me for a
00:03:59
while
00:04:00
but eventually as she began to do less
00:04:02
and less for the narrative I realized
00:04:05
that she just wasn't really going to be
00:04:06
that much of an important part of the
00:04:08
story and that was a little
00:04:09
disappointing this is really the one
00:04:12
thing of Beetlejuice 2 that I would
00:04:14
pinpoint is that there are an
00:04:16
overabundance of characters and all of
00:04:18
them are focused on for considerable
00:04:21
amount of time that being said when you
00:04:23
look back on the whole movie all of them
00:04:25
lead to this specific thing that has to
00:04:27
happen and I thought that that it worked
00:04:30
really nicely it's just that while
00:04:32
you're watching a lot of these
00:04:33
characters inevitably some of their
00:04:35
story lines become more interesting in
00:04:37
others and you want to get back to the
00:04:39
more interesting story lines when you're
00:04:40
stuck with some of the other people that
00:04:42
aren't as fun but Beetlejuice 2 is a
00:04:45
great looking movie with impeccable
00:04:48
production design makeup costumes and
00:04:51
animatronic effects and puppets things
00:04:54
that I did not think would be in this
00:04:56
movie I was really scared it was going
00:04:57
to be filled with a lot of very not ible
00:05:00
CGI I think it's handled wonderfully
00:05:03
there are so many great dead people in
00:05:05
the afterlife sections of the movie that
00:05:07
are very unique and you can look at them
00:05:09
and you know exactly how they died just
00:05:11
like the first one it has that same
00:05:13
Creative Energy in all of that and even
00:05:17
things that are CGI for sure you can
00:05:19
tell that they have tried to make it
00:05:21
look like stop motion like in the
00:05:23
original 88 film and with the movie
00:05:25
taking place around Halloween the whole
00:05:27
look of the movie The set design
00:05:28
production design of it just made me
00:05:30
very excited about spooky season and
00:05:32
that kind of thing is always going to
00:05:34
sit right with me so it didn't fall into
00:05:36
that decades later sequel trap of having
00:05:39
whatever character we like so much have
00:05:41
way more screen time it was very careful
00:05:44
with that and this also in no way felt
00:05:46
like a retread of the original obviously
00:05:48
it's not about a family discovering that
00:05:51
they're dead and then trying to figure
00:05:52
out how to scare people out of their
00:05:54
house it feels so much bigger than that
00:05:56
it feels like they've really explored
00:05:58
the afterlife way more more than they
00:06:00
did in the first film this movie is not
00:06:02
going to please everyone because as I
00:06:04
said in the start of this
00:06:06
video it's not the thing you watched
00:06:09
when you were five like there are going
00:06:11
to be people who watch this right now
00:06:13
when they're like five or six and we'll
00:06:15
see how they feel about it in 30 years I
00:06:17
think we've seen that a lot recently
00:06:19
with a lot of films that people didn't
00:06:21
love in the 90s and 2000s getting this
00:06:24
burst of new love because people who
00:06:27
were kids when they came out aren't kids
00:06:29
anymore I think Beetlejuice 2 is
00:06:31
everything that I enjoy about that first
00:06:33
film with a bigger world and more
00:06:36
characters it's not quite as focused as
00:06:39
that first movie it feels maybe a tad
00:06:42
too big like there's just a bit of an
00:06:44
overabundance of characters and
00:06:45
storylines but it does all come together
00:06:48
in the end and it worked for me
00:06:50
considerably so I'll be very curious to
00:06:51
see what you guys think of the film
00:06:52
thank you so much as always for watching
00:06:54
look forward to more videos very soon
00:06:56
and if you like this you can click right
00:06:57
here and get stuck minized
