- 00:04:33jan will you tell me please what is life
- 00:04:35about
- 00:04:36what is life about start with the easy
- 00:04:38questions right
- 00:04:39just work from there
- 00:04:42life is about whatever we're
- 00:04:44experiencing
- 00:04:45when we're experiencing it i don't know
- 00:04:48any other way to say that you know
- 00:04:49life is is what we experience and it's
- 00:04:52and it's
- 00:04:53it's in some ways we have overlapping
- 00:04:55experiences and in other ways we have
- 00:04:57our individualized and our separate
- 00:04:59experiences right
- 00:05:00and i was in a a satsang in a meeting
- 00:05:03one time and somebody asked
- 00:05:05the teacher you know what is the purpose
- 00:05:07of life what is life about and he said
- 00:05:09life is about
- 00:05:10enjoying the gift of life and to that i
- 00:05:13have to add what another teacher said
- 00:05:15irrespective of circumstances life is
- 00:05:18about enjoying the gift of life
- 00:05:20irrespective of the circumstances
- 00:05:21whether you're happy whether you're sad
- 00:05:23whether it's going
- 00:05:24away whether it's not life is about life
- 00:05:26is a gift
- 00:05:28you know it truly is and another one of
- 00:05:30my teachers said if you truly
- 00:05:32understood the gift you've been given
- 00:05:34you'd never ask for anything else
- 00:05:36well that's beautiful and yeah i i
- 00:05:39really love that answer
- 00:05:40and it resonates with me and what i find
- 00:05:43is it's
- 00:05:44maybe one of those things that's simple
- 00:05:46not easy right like it's easy to enjoy
- 00:05:48life when it's
- 00:05:49going your way when you're getting what
- 00:05:51you want and the weather is good and
- 00:05:53people are
- 00:05:54you know pleasant and things like that
- 00:05:56but what have you found
- 00:05:57i'm kind of going deep here but i just
- 00:05:59want to follow this thread
- 00:06:00how do you personally manage to do that
- 00:06:03even when
- 00:06:04circumstances or particular situations
- 00:06:06aren't
- 00:06:07easy it's constantly bringing my
- 00:06:09awareness back
- 00:06:10and i've been doing it a lot a long time
- 00:06:13so
- 00:06:14i'm not saying it's easier to do but the
- 00:06:16awareness comes quicker now
- 00:06:18than it used to so i don't get quite so
- 00:06:21and
- 00:06:22you know when i was younger i would get
- 00:06:24fully into an emotion
- 00:06:25and it would take a long time to release
- 00:06:27it now i can
- 00:06:28quite quite quickly bring myself back to
- 00:06:32to center where it's not i'm not going
- 00:06:35off in a direction that i'll
- 00:06:36find i'm never gonna come back from you
- 00:06:39know okay
- 00:06:40what a valuable skill and maybe one
- 00:06:43that's necessary
- 00:06:44if one is going to perform at the
- 00:06:46highest levels
- 00:06:47as an executive assistant right which
- 00:06:50yes
- 00:06:50you know to be honest before we met i'd
- 00:06:52never thought
- 00:06:54oh there's someone in the world who is
- 00:06:56you know the world's leading expert on
- 00:06:58what it means to be
- 00:06:59an effective executive assistant but of
- 00:07:01course there is right there's an expert
- 00:07:03about everything
- 00:07:04and it makes sense that you know there
- 00:07:06are executives
- 00:07:08who run the world's corporations and
- 00:07:11government organizations and ngos and
- 00:07:13all of this
- 00:07:14of course there are people who work you
- 00:07:16know closely with them to support them
- 00:07:18and help them be
- 00:07:19successful but let me ask you this
- 00:07:21question
- 00:07:22which is when you introduce yourself
- 00:07:26you know maybe or when you're introduced
- 00:07:28from a stage
- 00:07:30how do you typically like to answer the
- 00:07:32question you know who are you and what
- 00:07:34do you do
- 00:07:35well who i am and what i do now is is
- 00:07:37i'm not an assistant any longer
- 00:07:38obviously i run i have a business
- 00:07:40but i do very much identify as being an
- 00:07:44executive assistant because i was one
- 00:07:46for 20 years right
- 00:07:47so and when i talk to assistants i
- 00:07:49always say we or when i'm writing about
- 00:07:51assistance i say we
- 00:07:53because i guess old habits die hard i
- 00:07:56very much relate to
- 00:07:57being an executive assistant and it had
- 00:08:01such an impact on me that in my business
- 00:08:03right now in my life right now
- 00:08:05a lot of what i do is guided by what i
- 00:08:07learned as an assistant you know working
- 00:08:09side by side with entrepreneurs and and
- 00:08:12uh ceos and so that's
- 00:08:15uh kind of second nature for me when
- 00:08:18people introduce me now they just
- 00:08:19they introduced me now as the author of
- 00:08:21the ceo secret weapon that they
- 00:08:23introduced me as the author of the book
- 00:08:25and then of course they they talk about
- 00:08:26me having international business
- 00:08:28experience having worked across four
- 00:08:30continents in my career things like that
- 00:08:32and they always love to mention that i
- 00:08:34work for tony robbins because he's such
- 00:08:36a major personality in the world today
- 00:08:38so that's something else
- 00:08:39i don't define myself that way but
- 00:08:41people like to
- 00:08:42introduce me that way in order to give
- 00:08:44some perspective to who's
- 00:08:46there in front of them speaking yeah and
- 00:08:49i want to ask you
- 00:08:50i want to ask you about tony robbins but
- 00:08:51i'm going to hold off on that because i
- 00:08:53know you've worked with
- 00:08:54so many amazing personalities i want to
- 00:08:56explore for a moment this book the ceo
- 00:08:58secret weapon
- 00:08:59so will you tell me why did you write
- 00:09:01this book who did you write it for what
- 00:09:03did you wanted to do for them
- 00:09:04so i wrote the book for executives
- 00:09:07specifically
- 00:09:08the reason i did that is because the
- 00:09:11realization finally came to me when i
- 00:09:13actually when i started my business
- 00:09:15so i own a speaker's bureau it's the
- 00:09:17bespoke speakers bureau and we send
- 00:09:19business experts and celebrities to
- 00:09:20speak at events all over the world
- 00:09:22and because of that i have to work
- 00:09:24closely with these
- 00:09:25famous business people's assistants
- 00:09:27right and
- 00:09:29i discovered that many of them didn't
- 00:09:30have assistants who were worthy of this
- 00:09:32caliber of executive and i was always
- 00:09:34surprised
- 00:09:35how come this person who's standing up
- 00:09:36on a stage and telling the whole world
- 00:09:38how to run their business
- 00:09:40has got some crummy assistant who
- 00:09:42doesn't know what they're doing you know
- 00:09:44and i thought i'm gonna i found myself
- 00:09:46starting to explain to executives when
- 00:09:48they were needing an assistant or
- 00:09:50something like that
- 00:09:51what it took to support somebody like
- 00:09:53them and why it was so important for
- 00:09:54them to really pay attention
- 00:09:56to who was their representative and
- 00:09:58their face to the world
- 00:10:00and that's when i started to to
- 00:10:03always in the back of my head people
- 00:10:04were saying to me all the time write a
- 00:10:05book write a book yeah but what to say
- 00:10:07you know how to
- 00:10:08and then finally it started to to come
- 00:10:10together that the executive is the
- 00:10:12person i needed to target
- 00:10:13because the assistant knows a lot of
- 00:10:15this the assistant knows who they are
- 00:10:17they know what they do
- 00:10:18but the executive has no idea they don't
- 00:10:20know how to go about hiring an assistant
- 00:10:21what to look for what characteristics
- 00:10:24once they bring them on board what to do
- 00:10:25with them all of those things
- 00:10:27so i realized that it was incumbent on
- 00:10:29me if i was going to do this
- 00:10:31to speak directly to the executive and i
- 00:10:34said to my publisher repeatedly i said
- 00:10:36to her i'm telling you right now i'm
- 00:10:37writing the book for the executive but
- 00:10:39it's going to be the assistant
- 00:10:40who's going to push this book who's
- 00:10:42going to drive the book and who's going
- 00:10:44to
- 00:10:45give the credibility of the book the
- 00:10:47executive because the executive may come
- 00:10:48back from an eo meeting for example and
- 00:10:50say
- 00:10:51hey have you heard this book this year's
- 00:10:52secret weapon and if she goes
- 00:10:54oh my god yes absolutely i read it you
- 00:10:56you should read it that's a huge
- 00:10:57endorsement right
- 00:10:58because executives listen to their
- 00:11:00assistance hopefully
- 00:11:02and if the assistant said oh god that's
- 00:11:04just junk i wouldn't waste my time
- 00:11:06the book would go nowhere so i knew that
- 00:11:09that it had to have the credibility with
- 00:11:11the assistance and as much as it had to
- 00:11:13have with the executive
- 00:11:14and fortunately it does because
- 00:11:16assistants write to me from all over the
- 00:11:17world telling me this book is their
- 00:11:18bible
- 00:11:19nothing nothing more gratifying to me
- 00:11:21than to hear that
- 00:11:22yeah no i i can imagine and
- 00:11:26you know i i got a lot of value out of
- 00:11:27the book i have
- 00:11:29there's a statement that you make pretty
- 00:11:31early in the book
- 00:11:32here where you say high profile
- 00:11:34executives frequently saddle themselves
- 00:11:36with incompetent and opportunistic
- 00:11:38assistants
- 00:11:39who buckle under pressure betray
- 00:11:40confidences and use their positions as
- 00:11:43stepping stones to greener pastures
- 00:11:45it's like that might be most
- 00:11:49assistance but you know before we before
- 00:11:52we go to that i
- 00:11:53i want to i just want to back up a half
- 00:11:56step because
- 00:11:56i too you know as i'm working to reach
- 00:11:59and serve people who are working
- 00:12:01they're giving their all to building
- 00:12:03something expressing something
- 00:12:05contributing something to others you
- 00:12:07know pretty much everybody who's
- 00:12:09in that situation who's chosen that path
- 00:12:11to be a leader to be an entrepreneur to
- 00:12:13be an executive
- 00:12:14i think pretty much everybody feels
- 00:12:16stressed out overwhelmed under resourced
- 00:12:19you know this kind of thing and for many
- 00:12:22people
- 00:12:22find just like you said you know not
- 00:12:24knowing how to find an assistant
- 00:12:25what questions to ask maybe how to pay
- 00:12:28it it just becomes another task on their
- 00:12:29to-do list
- 00:12:31but how does one know that okay it's
- 00:12:34time
- 00:12:34like it's time to introduce someone
- 00:12:36because that's a big
- 00:12:38first of all you're letting them into
- 00:12:39your personal life right very very
- 00:12:41closely even if you're keeping up some
- 00:12:43kind of boundary by nature of they're
- 00:12:44reading your email they're looking at
- 00:12:45your calendar that kind of thing
- 00:12:47so how does one know yeah it's it's time
- 00:12:50for me to bring someone
- 00:12:51into my life to fill this role well
- 00:12:54there's a point at which
- 00:12:56you're having diminishing returns right
- 00:12:58and there's a point
- 00:12:59at which you're doing tasks that are
- 00:13:01just absolutely not
- 00:13:02productive not valuable to your time
- 00:13:05when you're doing those things
- 00:13:07it has to be clear that look there's
- 00:13:09there's somebody better served
- 00:13:11doing this task you know as i say in the
- 00:13:13book you know are you
- 00:13:14are you serving your organization by
- 00:13:17sitting there making your travel
- 00:13:18arrangements trying to save ten dollars
- 00:13:20you know on an airfare that's not a good
- 00:13:22use of your time
- 00:13:23that somebody else is much more
- 00:13:24proficient at that right so if you're
- 00:13:26doing these kinds of things
- 00:13:28and i understand you know with
- 00:13:29entrepreneurs for example small
- 00:13:31businesses and people like that startups
- 00:13:33they don't always have the kind of money
- 00:13:35you know they do a lot of things because
- 00:13:36they can't just can't afford to bring
- 00:13:38somebody on and that now today of course
- 00:13:39is rectified because
- 00:13:41you can use virtual assistants for
- 00:13:42example to help you i don't i don't
- 00:13:44recommend that for a long-term
- 00:13:47solution because i think well because if
- 00:13:49your assistant is going to grow
- 00:13:50alongside you
- 00:13:52they need to be side by side with you
- 00:13:53they need to be it's like having a
- 00:13:54long-distance relationship how far is
- 00:13:56that going to go
- 00:13:57you know it's like you hear about
- 00:13:58hollywood couples and you say what
- 00:13:59happened to your marriage and they say
- 00:14:01well i was off making a film he was off
- 00:14:03making a film we never saw each other
- 00:14:05you know it doesn't work long term you
- 00:14:06have to be there to imbibe each other
- 00:14:08and to
- 00:14:09feel each other and and to take your
- 00:14:12cues from each other
- 00:14:13and observe body language and all of
- 00:14:15these things
- 00:14:16and to be right there in the middle of
- 00:14:19the action you know
- 00:14:20this is the thing if you if you're not
- 00:14:21there you can't really you can't really
- 00:14:23support each other
- 00:14:24and i was just having this conversation
- 00:14:26because of now with the virus people are
- 00:14:28using
- 00:14:28working remotely right and this one
- 00:14:31assistant said to me well you know
- 00:14:33i don't need to go into the office
- 00:14:35anymore to be seen and i said well it's
- 00:14:36not a question so much of being seen
- 00:14:38as it is of being right there in the
- 00:14:41middle of the action and having the
- 00:14:42experience at the same time your
- 00:14:44executive or somebody else is having it
- 00:14:46otherwise they have to make a note to
- 00:14:48tell you
- 00:14:49what happened and telling me what
- 00:14:51happened is very different than me being
- 00:14:53right there experiencing it so i want
- 00:14:56to be there in the middle of the action
- 00:14:57to see to hear to know what to touch to
- 00:14:59feel to know what's going on because
- 00:15:01then i have first-hand experience i
- 00:15:03don't want second-hand experience in
- 00:15:04anything
- 00:15:05so if you're going to be what i call an
- 00:15:07exceptional executive assistant you're
- 00:15:09going to have to
- 00:15:10be side by side with your executive
- 00:15:12you're going to have to be there to
- 00:15:13support them
- 00:15:14you know all of my career my executives
- 00:15:16were constantly yelling at jen this jan
- 00:15:19that i mean i couldn't barely be out of
- 00:15:21earshot because they were constantly
- 00:15:22calling for me
- 00:15:23because they needed this so they needed
- 00:15:25that and i i had to be there
- 00:15:27to rattle off those answers to them when
- 00:15:29they were firing them at me so
- 00:15:32that's the thing you know you need to be
- 00:15:33there yeah i i think this
- 00:15:35that's how i when i watched how my dad
- 00:15:38worked he worked that way
- 00:15:39and i think this might be one of those
- 00:15:41things where
- 00:15:42you know there's a practical answer like
- 00:15:44you've just said when someone you know
- 00:15:45someone
- 00:15:46knows it might be time to bring an
- 00:15:48executive assistant on board when they
- 00:15:49find themselves doing tasks
- 00:15:51that someone else could do and leave
- 00:15:54them with
- 00:15:55more capacity to do things that only
- 00:15:56they could do whether it's creative work
- 00:15:58or client relations or presentation
- 00:16:02you know that kind of thing and that
- 00:16:03makes sense
- 00:16:05but and michael gerber you know someone
- 00:16:07that i understand you worked with for
- 00:16:08about 10 years
- 00:16:09yes i represented him exclusively for 10
- 00:16:11years yes yeah and this is something
- 00:16:13that's right in the heart of what he
- 00:16:14talks about where we
- 00:16:16you know many people in the e-myth about
- 00:16:18we become successful because we have a
- 00:16:20core genius
- 00:16:21but then to go to the next level it
- 00:16:24often requires another
- 00:16:25skill set and delegating or releasing
- 00:16:28certain things
- 00:16:29and it sounds easy but in the day to day
- 00:16:31of managing cash
- 00:16:32and you know keeping clients happy and
- 00:16:34things like that that can be a little
- 00:16:36hard to do
- 00:16:37so let me ask this then when it comes
- 00:16:38time so say i've reached the point
- 00:16:40and i've said that's it you know i'm
- 00:16:42going to find
- 00:16:43someone now how do i go about it
- 00:16:46it's all about you executives forget
- 00:16:49this all the time
- 00:16:50hr forgets it all the time first of all
- 00:16:54it starts with you
- 00:16:56what do i need what do i need from this
- 00:16:59person what do i need from this
- 00:17:00relationship what am i doing that i just
- 00:17:03want to get off my desk what do i need
- 00:17:05to relinquish here
- 00:17:07how do i like to work am i a morning
- 00:17:10person an evening person
- 00:17:12do i like meetings at a particular time
- 00:17:15do i like lunch meetings all everything
- 00:17:17that you can possibly think of
- 00:17:19about you put that down and be
- 00:17:22completely honest about it because this
- 00:17:23is
- 00:17:24ultimately this is about you and what
- 00:17:25you need and
- 00:17:27i know i a lot of younger executives
- 00:17:29will say to me
- 00:17:30well you know who am i to ask my
- 00:17:33assistant to do this
- 00:17:34and i feel bad to ask that and in this
- 00:17:37day and age can i even say
- 00:17:38my assistant and this is all nonsense
- 00:17:40you know this is about
- 00:17:42you bringing in somebody who relies on
- 00:17:44you
- 00:17:45to give them a job the assistant needs
- 00:17:47this job they need a paycheck they need
- 00:17:49to put food on the table for their kids
- 00:17:50they need to send their kids to school
- 00:17:52you're you're doing something valuable
- 00:17:54you're giving them what they need you're
- 00:17:56providing them with a livelihood
- 00:17:58and you have a right to ask for what it
- 00:18:00is that you need
- 00:18:02if the assistant doesn't want to do it
- 00:18:03that's a different story they say okay
- 00:18:05this doesn't suit me they don't they
- 00:18:06don't join your company right
- 00:18:08but you have to be clear on this is your
- 00:18:10business this is your it's
- 00:18:11your life right i mean a lot of business
- 00:18:14owners this is
- 00:18:14their business is their life that's what
- 00:18:16they do that's it's who they are
- 00:18:17that's how they identify themselves so
- 00:18:20you have a perfect right to
- 00:18:22ask for what it is you need and
- 00:18:25once you get that established then you
- 00:18:27go about looking for the person who's
- 00:18:29going to
- 00:18:29best meet those needs so if you're
- 00:18:32somebody who
- 00:18:33is a big picture person you're going to
- 00:18:36be driven
- 00:18:36mad by somebody who is is wanting to
- 00:18:39just be engaged in minutia and ask you
- 00:18:41questions all the time you're going to
- 00:18:42say
- 00:18:43go figure it out for yourself don't
- 00:18:44bother me right so you have to find
- 00:18:46somebody who is going to be able to
- 00:18:49work with you only looking at the big
- 00:18:51picture but somebody who is also able to
- 00:18:53manage the details or if you are if you
- 00:18:56are a micro manager you're not going to
- 00:18:58be able to work with an assistant who is
- 00:18:59accustomed to working autonomously for
- 00:19:01example
- 00:19:02they're going to be driven nuts so
- 00:19:04you're going to have to look for
- 00:19:05somebody who is
- 00:19:06really a very very good fit for you and
- 00:19:08it may it may take
- 00:19:10a lot of time you know and in the book i
- 00:19:11talk about john chambers the former ceo
- 00:19:13of cisco he
- 00:19:14saw 17 assistants before he hired debbie
- 00:19:17gross and she was with him for
- 00:19:1920 almost 30 years so you know
- 00:19:22you're gonna have to invest time in this
- 00:19:24because you're really looking for
- 00:19:25somebody
- 00:19:26who as i say in my book is a seamless
- 00:19:28extension of you
- 00:19:30that's who you're looking for you're
- 00:19:31they're your face and voice the world
- 00:19:32they're they're
- 00:19:33your deputy they know details about you
- 00:19:36that maybe sometimes even your closest
- 00:19:38family members don't know about you
- 00:19:40so you're gonna have to be very very
- 00:19:41careful how you choose this person
- 00:19:43yeah it's it's a big it's a big decision
- 00:19:46for sure
- 00:19:46and as i hear you describe you know
- 00:19:49being very clear
- 00:19:50what you want what you're working what
- 00:19:51your own working style and preferences
- 00:19:53and who's going to complement that
- 00:19:55you know what what comes up for me is is
- 00:19:58number one
- 00:19:59that i think requires a high degree of
- 00:20:02self-awareness and honesty
- 00:20:04right and number two that the person so
- 00:20:07say
- 00:20:08you're interviewing someone and you're
- 00:20:09telling them you know this is
- 00:20:11my working style these are my
- 00:20:12preferences these are the requirements
- 00:20:14anybody interviewing is likely almost
- 00:20:17anybody interviewing is like to say oh
- 00:20:18yeah i can do that
- 00:20:19no i'm i'm a good fit and here's why but
- 00:20:21how do you know because anyone can look
- 00:20:23good in a resume anybody can
- 00:20:24almost anybody can look good in an
- 00:20:26interview you know even references check
- 00:20:28out so how do you really know just
- 00:20:31saying you've got okay so you've made
- 00:20:32the decision to hire an assistant
- 00:20:34you've done the analysis of what your
- 00:20:35needs and desires are
- 00:20:37then you're at the point where you've
- 00:20:40you're interviewing people
- 00:20:41how do you actually determine who in
- 00:20:44fact
- 00:20:45will be a good fit so here's the thing i
- 00:20:47learned this from elon musk
- 00:20:49and i put it in my book because i i just
- 00:20:51found it so insightful
- 00:20:53he said when you're interviewing
- 00:20:55somebody
- 00:20:56if they've done something they will be
- 00:20:58able to get down to the brass tax
- 00:21:00if they haven't done it they'll fudge
- 00:21:02and it's very easy to tell whether
- 00:21:04somebody is
- 00:21:05and i say this all the time to
- 00:21:07executives if you ask an assistant have
- 00:21:09you done something
- 00:21:10if if they've done it they will rattle
- 00:21:12on for 15 20 minutes about how they did
- 00:21:14it what they did why they
- 00:21:16did i mean they'll give you every last
- 00:21:17detail if they didn't do it
- 00:21:20they'll say oh yeah well you know and
- 00:21:22and they'll fudge
- 00:21:23so this is a very very good indication
- 00:21:26about whether somebody's actually done
- 00:21:27something or not
- 00:21:28i was talking with a an executive a
- 00:21:31while ago and
- 00:21:32he was saying to me he made the wrong
- 00:21:34decision for his assistant
- 00:21:37he had asked for an assistant who had
- 00:21:38previously worked with the ceo and she
- 00:21:40said she had worked with the ceo
- 00:21:42but the ceo she had worked for was a
- 00:21:45small business owner he was a startup
- 00:21:46she was the only
- 00:21:47employee and she hadn't didn't have the
- 00:21:50broad corporate experience he was
- 00:21:51looking for
- 00:21:53but she said i told the truth he said he
- 00:21:55wanted someone to work for ceo i work
- 00:21:56for ceo but he just looked at that he
- 00:21:58didn't go beyond that to say well
- 00:22:00what are some of the things you did for
- 00:22:02the ceo what are some of the things he
- 00:22:04required of you
- 00:22:05tell me you know he didn't go for the
- 00:22:07broad the broader strokes he just
- 00:22:09listened to her saying yeah i work for
- 00:22:10ceo and that was all there was to it
- 00:22:12and he said to me that he ended up
- 00:22:14having to train her
- 00:22:17in what she and how she needed to do her
- 00:22:19job you don't have time for that
- 00:22:21i said to him why did you put up with it
- 00:22:23why didn't he he said jan i
- 00:22:24it took me so long to figure out what i
- 00:22:26needed how to go about it
- 00:22:28my work is piling up i'm just like at
- 00:22:30this stage fine you know i'll just do
- 00:22:33what it takes
- 00:22:34this is this is not a not a good thing
- 00:22:36to do if if you have to make the cut you
- 00:22:38have to make the cut
- 00:22:40and you but you have to have the
- 00:22:41conversation first right you have to
- 00:22:43have the conversation you have to let
- 00:22:44them know
- 00:22:45whether or not they're cutting it or not
- 00:22:47um
- 00:22:48and then explain to them look this is
- 00:22:50what i really need
- 00:22:52and give them a certain amount of time
- 00:22:54to show you whether or not they can do
- 00:22:55it and if they can't then they have to
- 00:22:57go that's just
- 00:22:58just the way it is yeah well and
- 00:23:01i think what you're pointing to you know
- 00:23:02it makes a lot of sense of of saying
- 00:23:04there is a there is a sort of dynamic or
- 00:23:07a chemistry that
- 00:23:08is going to be unique to the executive
- 00:23:11based on
- 00:23:12their preferences and working styles and
- 00:23:13that kind of thing what you're saying
- 00:23:15makes a lot of sense
- 00:23:16that there is a unique person or a
- 00:23:19unique dynamic
- 00:23:20that an executive would look for with an
- 00:23:22executive assistant
- 00:23:24but even setting that aside i would
- 00:23:26imagine
- 00:23:27that there's a core set of skills or
- 00:23:31competencies or ways of being that are
- 00:23:34probably
- 00:23:34common to every high-performing
- 00:23:36executive assistant
- 00:23:38and i'm just assuming that but do you
- 00:23:40see it that way and if so
- 00:23:42what are those things because you talk
- 00:23:44about the intangibles and i'm curious
- 00:23:46about that
- 00:23:47yeah so you've got the fundamentals that
- 00:23:49are in place which is
- 00:23:50the bedrock of every assistance toolkit
- 00:23:53right which is
- 00:23:54proficiency in their computer programs
- 00:23:58and
- 00:23:58typing in in my case shorthand and i'm
- 00:24:01glad to see many people are bringing
- 00:24:02back shorthand i don't understand
- 00:24:04how you could an assistant could ever
- 00:24:05have functioned without it because
- 00:24:07things are happening too fast and
- 00:24:09executives are very impatient and
- 00:24:10they're
- 00:24:11barking things at you and you've got to
- 00:24:12write them down really really fast and
- 00:24:14if you can't write shorthand you're
- 00:24:16going to miss a lot of it and my very
- 00:24:18last job i was working with a ceo
- 00:24:21and i had an assistant who didn't write
- 00:24:22shorthand and he would call us in
- 00:24:25and we would be there together because
- 00:24:26she did some things i did some things
- 00:24:28and so
- 00:24:28he would be dictating and i would be
- 00:24:30taking notes like crazy and she would be
- 00:24:32typing and she would be missing a lot of
- 00:24:33what he was saying
- 00:24:34even though she was a really fast typist
- 00:24:36she was probably typing
- 00:24:38i don't know 90 words a minute or
- 00:24:39something but she was missing a lot
- 00:24:41of what he was saying and so i'd have to
- 00:24:42go back and read my notes and say to her
- 00:24:44okay this is what he said or that is
- 00:24:46what he said or something like that so
- 00:24:48shorthand being a fast typer is not is
- 00:24:51not my experience that it's not a
- 00:24:52replacement for writing shorthand
- 00:24:54so you have those fundamental skills and
- 00:24:56then you have to be proficient at things
- 00:24:58like you know being able to make travel
- 00:25:00arrangements and and being
- 00:25:01competent with managing lots of
- 00:25:03different details things like that
- 00:25:05very good communication skills you know
- 00:25:07in the way you answer the phone and and
- 00:25:09being proficient in your job knowing
- 00:25:11knowing the company knowing
- 00:25:13understanding the business so if a call
- 00:25:14comes in you don't say
- 00:25:16well somebody sent the call to the ceo
- 00:25:18so let him take it you know
- 00:25:20you don't give the call to ceo you
- 00:25:21figure it out who
- 00:25:23either you handle it or you send it to
- 00:25:24the right department so you have to have
- 00:25:26a fundamental understanding about your
- 00:25:27organization
- 00:25:28and and how it works but then you have
- 00:25:30to bring what i call the intangibles
- 00:25:33these
- 00:25:33skills that they call soft skills these
- 00:25:36genesecular indescribable things right
- 00:25:39like the ability to
- 00:25:40the well you know it's so interesting
- 00:25:42when i was interviewing executives and
- 00:25:44assistants from my book
- 00:25:45categorically everybody said the most
- 00:25:47important skill they had to have
- 00:25:49was being able to anticipate being good
- 00:25:51at anticipating the boss's needs
- 00:25:53the boss would the executive would say
- 00:25:55the assistant would say
- 00:25:56and as they were saying it i would keep
- 00:25:58waiting for them to say that next thing
- 00:26:00that next thing which i consider to be
- 00:26:01equal first with anticipating and that's
- 00:26:03resourcefulness
- 00:26:04got to be resourceful gotta gotta know
- 00:26:06where to go for information you don't
- 00:26:08always have the information but you have
- 00:26:09to know how to get the job done
- 00:26:11you have to be able to say okay i don't
- 00:26:13have what i need
- 00:26:14so i'm going to be have to use what i
- 00:26:16have right and and you figure out ways
- 00:26:18to get things done that's being
- 00:26:20resourceful that that's absolutely
- 00:26:22crucial because i know a lot of
- 00:26:23assistants
- 00:26:24they're able to say well oh i see this
- 00:26:26is about to happen
- 00:26:27but they don't know how to fix it and
- 00:26:28then they give it to the executive and
- 00:26:30all of a sudden it becomes the
- 00:26:31executive's job to
- 00:26:32to find the solution so you've got to be
- 00:26:34resourceful you've got to be able to
- 00:26:36find a way to
- 00:26:37anticipate and to also do something
- 00:26:40about what you see
- 00:26:41right and the more i started talking
- 00:26:44about this
- 00:26:45to me something precedes all of that and
- 00:26:48preceding all of that is the ability to
- 00:26:50see the big picture
- 00:26:51because if you can't see the big picture
- 00:26:53if you don't get the big picture
- 00:26:55you can't anticipate you don't know what
- 00:26:56to look for and if you don't know what
- 00:26:58to look for then you don't know
- 00:27:00how to resolve it you don't know how to
- 00:27:02be prepared
- 00:27:03so seeing the big pictures is is a very
- 00:27:06very important skill and and that's this
- 00:27:08is where communication with your
- 00:27:09executive comes in because
- 00:27:11they have to be accountable for
- 00:27:13communicating with you right these are
- 00:27:14my goals these are my objectives
- 00:27:16this is what we want to achieve in in
- 00:27:18the next quarter in the next
- 00:27:20year and the next five years etc so
- 00:27:22there has to be constant communication
- 00:27:24between the executive and the assistant
- 00:27:26because once the assistant is completely
- 00:27:28apprised of what it is
- 00:27:29that you want to achieve now they're
- 00:27:31able to help you achieve your goals but
- 00:27:32if you don't talk to them if you don't
- 00:27:34communicate with them
- 00:27:35if you don't trust them if you don't
- 00:27:38download
- 00:27:39to them if you are not transparent with
- 00:27:41them they're not going to be able to do
- 00:27:43their job
- 00:27:43because there's only so much you can
- 00:27:45glean from reading documents and from
- 00:27:48listening to conversations and
- 00:27:49everything else and this is what i mean
- 00:27:50about
- 00:27:51this one-on-one with the executive where
- 00:27:53you sit together when you talk and you
- 00:27:56exchange and they say well i've seen
- 00:27:57this actually
- 00:27:58i know you're thinking about doing that
- 00:27:59but from what i'm hearing
- 00:28:01i really think we ought to make an
- 00:28:02adjustment and this is how you have this
- 00:28:04back and forth
- 00:28:05and you develop a rapport and you become
- 00:28:07essentially now you're working together
- 00:28:08in a partnership with each other
- 00:28:10you talk about so okay so i'm hearing in
- 00:28:12what you're saying anticipation
- 00:28:14it was the most common response from and
- 00:28:16you interviewed some pretty high profile
- 00:28:18people's assistants simon sinek and
- 00:28:20donald trump
- 00:28:21and as you mentioned already john
- 00:28:22chambers and these people and so you
- 00:28:24went
- 00:28:25deep in uh not only your career
- 00:28:28in in this work as an executive
- 00:28:30assistant but and then in interviewing
- 00:28:32both executives and their assistants but
- 00:28:33so what i'm hearing is these common
- 00:28:36traits
- 00:28:37that are valuable anticipation
- 00:28:38resourcefulness the ability to see the
- 00:28:40big picture
- 00:28:41so you've got these things and you tell
- 00:28:42this story hearing you share that calls
- 00:28:44to mind for me
- 00:28:45a story you tell in the book that i
- 00:28:47cringed
- 00:28:48a little i i cringed a little bit when
- 00:28:50you told it about the
- 00:28:52don't make me do your job
- 00:28:55will you share will you would you be
- 00:28:57willing to share that story
- 00:28:58oh yes yes it's a lesson i've never
- 00:29:00forgotten and you know i tell you
- 00:29:02something brian
- 00:29:03i'm so grateful because during the time
- 00:29:05that i was coming up as a young
- 00:29:06secretary and then as an assistant then
- 00:29:08you know
- 00:29:09they your title evolves as you become
- 00:29:11more senior
- 00:29:12but my executives never hesitated to set
- 00:29:15me straight
- 00:29:16and that's how i learned and if they
- 00:29:18hadn't taken the time to do that i would
- 00:29:20never be who i am
- 00:29:21where i am today because these are vital
- 00:29:23lessons i was working side by side these
- 00:29:25business people who were teaching
- 00:29:27exactly what they knew and how they
- 00:29:28would do it
- 00:29:29right so incredible gratitude now people
- 00:29:32say all the time
- 00:29:33executives don't want to tell their
- 00:29:34assistants anything they're afraid of
- 00:29:37looking like they're you know they
- 00:29:38they're nervous to to do the right thing
- 00:29:40you know they don't want to
- 00:29:41be misinterpreted and things like that
- 00:29:44so
- 00:29:44it's really a shame because many
- 00:29:47assistants say they want a mentor they
- 00:29:48want somebody who's
- 00:29:49you don't have to you know ball them out
- 00:29:52but you need to
- 00:29:53really give them some direction you know
- 00:29:55and i'm so grateful that i had that
- 00:29:57so what happened one time was that we
- 00:29:59had a really important document that
- 00:30:01needed to be signed
- 00:30:02and we were at the head office in sydney
- 00:30:04this is when i lived and worked in
- 00:30:06australia
- 00:30:07so our head office was in sydney and our
- 00:30:09director was based in melbourne
- 00:30:11and he was about to go back to melbourne
- 00:30:13and my ceo said to me i need this
- 00:30:14document sign get john to sign it so
- 00:30:16i take it to john he's not in his office
- 00:30:18his sister is sitting there and i say to
- 00:30:20her
- 00:30:20get him to sign this document it's
- 00:30:22really important he's got to sign before
- 00:30:23he goes
- 00:30:24she says put it on his chair he won't
- 00:30:25miss it so i put it on his chair
- 00:30:27five minutes later i come back and i say
- 00:30:29do you have the document she goes no
- 00:30:31john's gone my head was gonna explode
- 00:30:34but anyway
- 00:30:35i go to the chair and it's just sitting
- 00:30:37there it's not signed so i have to
- 00:30:39now take the document to my executive i
- 00:30:41have to say to him you know
- 00:30:43i didn't get it signed and i said to him
- 00:30:44look i gave it to allison she said
- 00:30:47put it on his chair he'll sign it he
- 00:30:49came in took his jacket from behind the
- 00:30:51door and left he didn't even go to his
- 00:30:52chair right
- 00:30:53and she didn't didn't think to say to
- 00:30:55him hey john there's a document to sign
- 00:30:57so i give that
- 00:30:58i tell the story to my boss and i can
- 00:31:01see the frustration building on his face
- 00:31:03and there i
- 00:31:04am just so aghast that i've let him down
- 00:31:08because i just
- 00:31:09idolized this guy he was just the most
- 00:31:11incredible
- 00:31:12executive you know and to think that i
- 00:31:15had
- 00:31:15somehow betrayed his trust in me so i'm
- 00:31:17sitting there
- 00:31:19he picks up the phone he calls down to
- 00:31:21our melbourne office
- 00:31:22and he says to them tell john when he
- 00:31:25arrives this
- 00:31:25document is coming by the overnight back
- 00:31:27tonight again to sign it
- 00:31:28put it in the bag and send it back to
- 00:31:30sydney overnight and
- 00:31:32as he's saying all this to her in
- 00:31:34between while she's taking notes he
- 00:31:35looks at me and he says
- 00:31:37i don't want to have to do your job for
- 00:31:38you what could i say what could i do
- 00:31:41there was you know i mean in that moment
- 00:31:43i just had to muster all my humility
- 00:31:46and and just take the lesson and i i'm
- 00:31:49so grateful i've never forgotten it
- 00:31:51because never again in my life
- 00:31:52have i ever permitted my executive to
- 00:31:54say i don't want to have to do your job
- 00:31:56for you
- 00:31:56because that's exactly what i made him
- 00:31:58do he did my job for me
- 00:31:59ceo of a gigantic company doing my job
- 00:32:02for me
- 00:32:03so yes yes i i'm glad you i'm glad i
- 00:32:05conveyed to you
- 00:32:07exactly how i felt so okay so
- 00:32:11as we're moving down this progression
- 00:32:12how to identify
- 00:32:14you know i don't know when it's time to
- 00:32:16hire an executive assistant
- 00:32:18how to be clear which one's gonna be a
- 00:32:19good fit with you
- 00:32:21what to look for and then we get into an
- 00:32:24interview process
- 00:32:25and this is one thing i really
- 00:32:26appreciate in your book by the way and
- 00:32:28you just mentioned the one the question
- 00:32:29from elon musk which
- 00:32:30i actually wrote down as well as i read
- 00:32:32the book i thought that's a great
- 00:32:33question about
- 00:32:34asking someone especially in this era
- 00:32:36where things are collaborative
- 00:32:38more than ever you know and people say
- 00:32:40oh i was part of the team that grew
- 00:32:42revenues to 20 million or i was part of
- 00:32:44the team that launched that product and
- 00:32:45and and i love that insight about asking
- 00:32:48how they did it and
- 00:32:49you know people who were really involved
- 00:32:52the
- 00:32:53in the action of it will be able to talk
- 00:32:55about it differently
- 00:32:57you mentioned a question that simon
- 00:32:59sinek asks
- 00:33:00that i similarly thought was a great
- 00:33:02question
- 00:33:04about surprises will you share what what
- 00:33:07is the question that simon sinek shared
- 00:33:08with you
- 00:33:09to ask in an interview and what other
- 00:33:11questions have you discovered
- 00:33:12are really good at kind of weeding out
- 00:33:15you know who
- 00:33:16might actually be a good fit from who
- 00:33:18you'd be glad you didn't hire
- 00:33:19yeah you know he he doesn't like any
- 00:33:22surprise he doesn't like surprises so he
- 00:33:24always asks asks them the question what
- 00:33:26what surprise would i not like to have
- 00:33:28tell me about that surprise right that's
- 00:33:31that's a tricky question because
- 00:33:32in an interview a lot of the time you
- 00:33:34have to assume you don't know the person
- 00:33:35well enough to to be able to answer a
- 00:33:37question like that and then something
- 00:33:38else i pointed in the book
- 00:33:39as i as i say to executives don't ask
- 00:33:41them questions that they're going to
- 00:33:42need inside knowledge to answer
- 00:33:44yeah because then it's just a gotcha
- 00:33:46question because there are a lot of
- 00:33:47things about your company that
- 00:33:48they can't possibly know so don't judge
- 00:33:50them if they can't answer that as
- 00:33:51proficiently as possible
- 00:33:53but in general questions yes you know hr
- 00:33:55should have already done the whole
- 00:33:57portion about whether or not they're
- 00:33:59proficient in their skills and things
- 00:34:01like that
- 00:34:02so when you're talking to the person
- 00:34:03it's really about getting to know them
- 00:34:06getting to know them and sharing who you
- 00:34:08are
- 00:34:09because in in that process and the thing
- 00:34:11about executives i tell them all the
- 00:34:12time is look you've you've built a
- 00:34:14business you've probably built many
- 00:34:15businesses
- 00:34:16you have very good gut instincts trust
- 00:34:19your gut and this executive who said to
- 00:34:20me i don't want to have to do your job
- 00:34:22for me
- 00:34:23when he was interviewing me he said to
- 00:34:25me you know
- 00:34:26ultimately it's a gut feeling that you
- 00:34:28have whether this person is going to be
- 00:34:30a good fit or not you know i
- 00:34:32i can we can sit here forever and and
- 00:34:34talk about
- 00:34:35all kinds of things and ask what kind of
- 00:34:36questions but in the end it's a gut
- 00:34:38instinct about whether or not you're
- 00:34:39going to be a good fit for me and
- 00:34:41whether we're going to work well
- 00:34:42together
- 00:34:42so i think a lot of that has to do with
- 00:34:44your intuition and whether or not you
- 00:34:46feel comfortable with this person
- 00:34:48and for the assistant it's very very
- 00:34:51important
- 00:34:52to say to yourself is this somebody that
- 00:34:54i'm willing to go all out for in the
- 00:34:56long term
- 00:34:57because it takes immense amounts of
- 00:35:00energy to be an assistant
- 00:35:01immense you can't even begin to imagine
- 00:35:04not just the long hours but the sheer
- 00:35:06volume of things that are coming to you
- 00:35:08the sheer volume of
- 00:35:10everybody at the same time wanting
- 00:35:12things from you you know
- 00:35:13some days you you just become in a state
- 00:35:16of overwhelm because it's just
- 00:35:17immense what they're asking all the time
- 00:35:20you have to know the answers you have to
- 00:35:22show the results there's lots of things
- 00:35:24that are on your shoulders
- 00:35:26so you have to i for me personally the
- 00:35:28question is
- 00:35:29is this somebody i want to support long
- 00:35:31term is this somebody
- 00:35:32i care enough about to give my life
- 00:35:35force to
- 00:35:36because that's what i'm doing day in and
- 00:35:38day out i'm giving them my life force
- 00:35:41and for me the time to leave is when i
- 00:35:43no longer want to do that
- 00:35:45i can't give you any more i've given all
- 00:35:48i can give
- 00:35:48and i'm i'm not replenishing i'm not
- 00:35:51feeling like i'm getting
- 00:35:53anything back from it then it's time for
- 00:35:55me to move on
- 00:35:56and sometimes you can have the
- 00:35:58discussion ahead of time with your
- 00:35:59executive and let them know sometimes
- 00:36:01they don't want to know
- 00:36:02and when they don't want to know then
- 00:36:04you know you're not being treated and
- 00:36:05respected for
- 00:36:06as a human being so it's it's time to
- 00:36:08move on
- 00:36:09yeah no that's a that's a powerful
- 00:36:11question and i love
- 00:36:12a question a friend of mine suggested
- 00:36:14and and this was for hiring anyone but
- 00:36:17i think it's a great question for maybe
- 00:36:19hiring an executive assistant he just
- 00:36:21said
- 00:36:21not that you would go on a road trip
- 00:36:24with him but but he said is this the
- 00:36:25kind of person i would want to go on a
- 00:36:27road trip with
- 00:36:28i'm like i'd want to be stuck in a car
- 00:36:30for 20 hours you know
- 00:36:31i was like that's an interesting spin on
- 00:36:33it but you also have this other thing
- 00:36:35that i never
- 00:36:36thought or i'd never heard it worded
- 00:36:38this way that i actually thought was
- 00:36:39pretty
- 00:36:40interesting where you you suggest asking
- 00:36:43general knowledge questions such as
- 00:36:45who's the prime minister of england or
- 00:36:47what's the tallest mountain in japan
- 00:36:48or something what's the thinking behind
- 00:36:50that well
- 00:36:52an assistant has to be well-rounded they
- 00:36:54have to be tuned into what's happening
- 00:36:56in business and in world whether it's
- 00:36:58social economic political they have to
- 00:37:00know what's happening in the world and
- 00:37:02now more than ever
- 00:37:03assistants have to be tuned in because
- 00:37:05because the whole globalization thing
- 00:37:07you have to know what's going
- 00:37:08on and you can't afford to be dealing
- 00:37:11with somebody
- 00:37:12in the czech republic or in india or
- 00:37:14somewhere else and you have no clue
- 00:37:16about their country about their customs
- 00:37:19if you don't even know the capital city
- 00:37:20of their country so
- 00:37:22in this particular one that you
- 00:37:23mentioned example that i gave i was
- 00:37:24working at this
- 00:37:25company where we had offices in the uk
- 00:37:28and uh we were headquartered in japan
- 00:37:31and so if somebody was coming to work i
- 00:37:32would say what are some general
- 00:37:33knowledge questions you know
- 00:37:35who's the queen of england what's her
- 00:37:36name what's her husband's name you know
- 00:37:37do you know her children's name
- 00:37:39of course in america it's more difficult
- 00:37:40in australia and england or somewhere
- 00:37:41they they would know that anyway
- 00:37:43but you but you have to know that
- 00:37:44london's the capital of england right
- 00:37:46you know
- 00:37:48there are people who think new york's
- 00:37:49the capital of america so
- 00:37:52you know this is the kind of stuff that
- 00:37:53you you you have to make certain that
- 00:37:56if if they're not tuned and if they're
- 00:37:57not informed they're not going to be a
- 00:37:59good ambassador for their executives so
- 00:38:01these are the kinds of things you have
- 00:38:02to know
- 00:38:03and also when your executive is having
- 00:38:04conversations
- 00:38:06you have to be able to make sense of the
- 00:38:07conversations that they're having
- 00:38:09you know if they you've got to read
- 00:38:11something in the newspaper in the
- 00:38:12morning you've got to be able to say you
- 00:38:14know
- 00:38:14okay they're looking at the wall street
- 00:38:17journal of
- 00:38:18new york times or whatever there's an
- 00:38:19article in both those papers this
- 00:38:21morning talking about something in
- 00:38:22particular
- 00:38:23i need to know what that is because it
- 00:38:25impacts how i do my job
- 00:38:27and i want to be informed when my
- 00:38:29executive is talking and
- 00:38:30i may have seen something that adds some
- 00:38:33dimension and perspective to what
- 00:38:35they've read because i may see
- 00:38:36some of the news developing later on
- 00:38:38than what they've read that morning so
- 00:38:40i have to be able to contribute so i
- 00:38:42have to be informed about
- 00:38:43the world and you know business and
- 00:38:45economics and everything in general
- 00:38:47yeah that that made a lot of sense to me
- 00:38:50and in this process of interviewing
- 00:38:52someone
- 00:38:52you know using these questions and these
- 00:38:54kinds of questions to get
- 00:38:56to the truth of whether they're going to
- 00:39:00fit and and be you know successful in
- 00:39:02this role
- 00:39:03one thing that i found myself asking is
- 00:39:07is there a shortcut in any way or a
- 00:39:09valid a way to validate or confirm
- 00:39:12in the form of personality assessment
- 00:39:15you know myers-briggs
- 00:39:16disc uh strengthsfinder you know the
- 00:39:19enneagram like anything
- 00:39:20what what's your take on how useful
- 00:39:23those are
- 00:39:24as any kind of factor in the
- 00:39:26decision-making process
- 00:39:28i think they're all useful disc in
- 00:39:30particular
- 00:39:31i i i like disc myers-briggs has been
- 00:39:34around a long time
- 00:39:35and enneagram i i like a lot too it's
- 00:39:38not as common
- 00:39:39for me i know the enneagram from a more
- 00:39:42metaphysical and spiritual aspect than i
- 00:39:44do personality because
- 00:39:45it was never meant to be a personality
- 00:39:47tool but it's being used like that today
- 00:39:49right so
- 00:39:50it was meant to more be as an inner tool
- 00:39:53of
- 00:39:54of recognizing your true nature the
- 00:39:56enneagram of your true self
- 00:39:57so i don't know that the enneagram is
- 00:40:00always reliable in the way that it's
- 00:40:01used
- 00:40:02today there's this one assistant and she
- 00:40:04did the enneagram
- 00:40:06somewhere when she came out on the and
- 00:40:07linkedin and she said hey i'm a nine you
- 00:40:10know yeah absolutely i'm a nine and
- 00:40:12it's like you know this is not what it
- 00:40:14was for so
- 00:40:15to me an enneagram is maybe being
- 00:40:18misused
- 00:40:19as a personality test because of the
- 00:40:21origins of the enneagram
- 00:40:23but i so i would say yeah this can
- 00:40:25advise grim briggs yes absolutely i
- 00:40:27i see that those are those and when i
- 00:40:29take those tests i'm quite surprised at
- 00:40:30how
- 00:40:31uh how accurate they really are okay so
- 00:40:34now we've got through say we've done the
- 00:40:36selection
- 00:40:36we've done the interviewing we've made
- 00:40:38the choice we're bringing somebody
- 00:40:39aboard
- 00:40:40and then i'm just thinking i'm also
- 00:40:42mentally going okay how far am i going
- 00:40:44with this
- 00:40:45but now we're going okay so somebody's
- 00:40:47here
- 00:40:48and we get to work with them i want to
- 00:40:50go a different direction because i want
- 00:40:51to ask you
- 00:40:52i i want to i learned a story i'd never
- 00:40:54heard before that i thought was pretty
- 00:40:56cool and the kind of
- 00:40:57influence or significance and assistant
- 00:40:59can have
- 00:41:00but it's the story that you share about
- 00:41:02elvis presley that
- 00:41:04was so amazing and i know that there's
- 00:41:06many coincidences in the universe or
- 00:41:08you know things if it had gone a
- 00:41:10different way maybe the whole you know
- 00:41:12our lives all of our lives would be
- 00:41:13different
- 00:41:14but would you be willing to share the
- 00:41:15story about how
- 00:41:17an assistant made the difference perhaps
- 00:41:20in discovering elvis presley
- 00:41:22yeah so sam phillips's assistant was
- 00:41:25marrying kaiser
- 00:41:26and this is what i'm saying what i said
- 00:41:29earlier about
- 00:41:30executive insistence being with each
- 00:41:31other all the time because he was
- 00:41:33constantly saying
- 00:41:35over and over again that if he could
- 00:41:37find
- 00:41:38a white man who sounded like a black man
- 00:41:40he he could make a million bucks and
- 00:41:41this is back in the the 50s rights a
- 00:41:43million bucks meant something
- 00:41:44in those days and he was saying
- 00:41:48it all the time all the time all the
- 00:41:49time all the time you know if i could
- 00:41:50find a white man who sounds like a black
- 00:41:52man i could make a million bucks and
- 00:41:54so because she was hearing this all the
- 00:41:56time she was
- 00:41:58tuned into it she was looking for it and
- 00:42:00maybe subconsciously even
- 00:42:02elvis shows up he makes a recording for
- 00:42:04his mother sam is not there in the
- 00:42:06studio
- 00:42:06this is the real story he sam was not
- 00:42:08there in the studio marion actually
- 00:42:10made the tape of elvis recording the
- 00:42:13song for his mother
- 00:42:15and he gave her the money and he left
- 00:42:17and she wrote on there
- 00:42:18good ballad singer keith and she wrote
- 00:42:21his name elvis presley
- 00:42:22and she saved that and she played it
- 00:42:25back for sam
- 00:42:26and sam said no you know i don't think
- 00:42:28so his voice is
- 00:42:30too pretty he's not quite what i'm
- 00:42:31looking for and she every time a song
- 00:42:34came in
- 00:42:34because the musicians would bring their
- 00:42:36songs in and they would be looking for a
- 00:42:38singer and every time they were looking
- 00:42:39for a singer she would say to sam what
- 00:42:41about the boy with the sideburns
- 00:42:43and he'd say no no no no no until one
- 00:42:46day finally
- 00:42:47they okay they he they brought him in
- 00:42:50and he went in the studio and he cut the
- 00:42:52song
- 00:42:53and all hell broke loose right i mean
- 00:42:55the djs were playing it
- 00:42:57people were calling in and requesting it
- 00:42:59and and all because
- 00:43:01she heard him say over and over again if
- 00:43:04i if i could find a white man this can
- 00:43:06sound like a black man i'll make a
- 00:43:07million bucks and she just kept that in
- 00:43:09the back of his head
- 00:43:10so when elvis showed up she put it in
- 00:43:12front of him and like i said she knew
- 00:43:13better than he did apparently what he
- 00:43:15was looking for
- 00:43:16because he said over and i've heard the
- 00:43:18interviews with sam phillips saying
- 00:43:20i thought elvis voice was too pretty too
- 00:43:22beautiful i didn't think he was the
- 00:43:24right person
- 00:43:25but she had heard him already doing this
- 00:43:28other number for his mother right so she
- 00:43:30could hear that in there
- 00:43:31and she had heard enough of these songs
- 00:43:33to know that his voice would work well
- 00:43:35on these songs
- 00:43:37so finally they brought him in and for
- 00:43:39me
- 00:43:40what's so interesting is that elvis
- 00:43:42would call all the time
- 00:43:43he was so hungry he'd call all the time
- 00:43:45and say anybody want to sing or anybody
- 00:43:47want to sing her
- 00:43:48and it's so heartbreaking to think about
- 00:43:50elvis presley as a young boy right
- 00:43:52anybody want to sing or anybody want to
- 00:43:54sing her
- 00:43:54because he needed a job so badly and he
- 00:43:56knew he said he knew always
- 00:43:57he was going to be he was going to be
- 00:43:59somebody you knew he was going to be a
- 00:44:01a singer you know and so and he told the
- 00:44:04story later on
- 00:44:05he always said that it was in fact
- 00:44:07marion who was responsible for his
- 00:44:09success because she was always putting
- 00:44:11him forward
- 00:44:12even when sam didn't really think that
- 00:44:15he was he was the right fit for these
- 00:44:16songs so
- 00:44:17he always gave her the credit in fact he
- 00:44:19told priscilla without her i wouldn't
- 00:44:21even be
- 00:44:22here wow that's amazing yeah thank you
- 00:44:25for sharing that
- 00:44:26that was a fun story to read okay i
- 00:44:29think the last
- 00:44:30the last question i want to ask before i
- 00:44:32ask
- 00:44:33what else we ought to cover before we
- 00:44:35move to the next section
- 00:44:37but i want to ask you about compensation
- 00:44:39because say we've followed that whole
- 00:44:40thread
- 00:44:41we've identified the person we're ready
- 00:44:43to offer them the job
- 00:44:44how do we know what to pay them you have
- 00:44:46to do your research on your market right
- 00:44:48you have to see what the commensurate
- 00:44:50salary is for that particular role
- 00:44:53there's two things you know people have
- 00:44:55a tendency to pay less than they're
- 00:44:57always worth and a tendency to pay
- 00:44:58way too much more than it's worth way
- 00:45:00too much worth
- 00:45:02where it's worth is happening in silicon
- 00:45:03valley i see it a lot
- 00:45:05where they've got a lot of money to
- 00:45:06throw at things and they want to be
- 00:45:08pc they want to show how
- 00:45:11respectful they are and so they're
- 00:45:13paying assistants who are not worth that
- 00:45:14kind of money
- 00:45:15that kind of money and oh yes it's quite
- 00:45:18common i've seen assistants who have
- 00:45:20maybe two or three years experience
- 00:45:22being paid 125 150
- 00:45:24000 things like that no way nowhere are
- 00:45:27they
- 00:45:27they're not worth that kind of money but
- 00:45:30they're they're not doing their
- 00:45:31due diligence they're saying well he is
- 00:45:34a certain caliber of executive
- 00:45:36and the statistics say that this caliber
- 00:45:38executive has to be paying this much
- 00:45:40and so whether the assistant meets those
- 00:45:42requirements or not they're paying them
- 00:45:44that much and
- 00:45:45it's setting a bad precedent because now
- 00:45:48what's going to happen when that
- 00:45:50assistant goes somewhere else for
- 00:45:51example
- 00:45:52and she's not going to pay that kind of
- 00:45:54money because she's simply not worth it
- 00:45:56or somebody who's even better than that
- 00:45:58assistant is saying hey i'm
- 00:46:00so much better than she is and she's
- 00:46:01getting 125 i'm getting 100. hey you
- 00:46:04know
- 00:46:04the disparity so that's the disadvantage
- 00:46:06of silicon valley and i know that
- 00:46:07assistants are going to have a fit when
- 00:46:09i they hear me saying this because
- 00:46:11they want they want to get paid right
- 00:46:12they feel it's justified to get paid
- 00:46:14that way
- 00:46:15but there has to be some rationale for
- 00:46:17paying people what you're paying them
- 00:46:19i think more assistance are paid less
- 00:46:21than they should be paid then are being
- 00:46:23paid for then they should be paid let me
- 00:46:24be clear about that
- 00:46:25but you have to do the research on your
- 00:46:27market you have to see what's the
- 00:46:29the the salary that is fair and then if
- 00:46:33you want somebody
- 00:46:34pretty good you're going to have to pay
- 00:46:35a little more for them you know even if
- 00:46:37the market is saying it's
- 00:46:38it's you know 60 000 and this person you
- 00:46:41really want them and they're saying
- 00:46:4375 is what i want you're gonna have to
- 00:46:44come up with the difference and i used
- 00:46:46to say to to companies all the time look
- 00:46:48you're in a much better position to come
- 00:46:50up than i am and to go down
- 00:46:52in salary right it's a lot easier for
- 00:46:55you to give me a little bit more money
- 00:46:56than it is for me to say well i'll take
- 00:46:57a
- 00:46:57cut because assistants are not being
- 00:47:00paid that amount of money so then all of
- 00:47:01a sudden you say no take a cut so that
- 00:47:03you can come join here
- 00:47:04another thing i won't mention the
- 00:47:06company but they were they would say
- 00:47:07things to people all the time like well
- 00:47:09you're coming here for the opportunity
- 00:47:11yeah to a certain degree i am but then
- 00:47:13i'm also i also need to pay my bills
- 00:47:15right may also be need to be
- 00:47:17have you show me that i'm i'm worth what
- 00:47:19that you believe i'm worth
- 00:47:20what i am worth so yeah so you have to
- 00:47:23look at the
- 00:47:24the numbers for your market i just and
- 00:47:26one interesting because
- 00:47:27i was just talking with somebody who has
- 00:47:30a work visa to come work in the us and
- 00:47:32she was telling me
- 00:47:33that they have to put down what they're
- 00:47:35paying on the form they have to
- 00:47:37tell the the immigration what they're
- 00:47:39paying this person
- 00:47:40and it has to be the wage that's
- 00:47:43commensurate with the market
- 00:47:44so if they're in new york they have to
- 00:47:46pay them a certain wage if they're in
- 00:47:47arizona they have to pay them a certain
- 00:47:48wage they can't pay them in new york
- 00:47:50what they would pay them
- 00:47:51in nevada or arizona for example so yeah
- 00:47:54that's pretty interesting
- 00:47:55okay so that spawned yeah thank you for
- 00:47:57that that insight
- 00:47:59and on that on that comparison by the
- 00:48:00way do you i know there are
- 00:48:02there are firms who issue you know
- 00:48:04salary
- 00:48:05reports like that but when you talk
- 00:48:07about finding comps for your
- 00:48:09your market or your area do you mean
- 00:48:12informally just surveying
- 00:48:13you know like peer executives to see
- 00:48:15what they're paying or to go find some
- 00:48:17kind of formal report what do you
- 00:48:18what do you recommend yeah yeah yeah you
- 00:48:20do both and somewhere in the middle
- 00:48:22is is the right thing i think i think
- 00:48:25polling
- 00:48:25assistance on what they are what they're
- 00:48:28making
- 00:48:29in that market i think that's that's to
- 00:48:31me the most accurate way to do it
- 00:48:32because that's really
- 00:48:33a good indication because you know you
- 00:48:36might you might say well the going rate
- 00:48:38is
- 00:48:3975 000 but the other assistants
- 00:48:43are you you know that they're making and
- 00:48:45i've had this happen over assistance
- 00:48:46will say look
- 00:48:47they're telling me that the going market
- 00:48:50rate is is you know hundred thousand
- 00:48:51dollars for this job
- 00:48:52but i know at least five other
- 00:48:54assistants with the same caliber as i am
- 00:48:56they're making between 115 and 125 so
- 00:48:58i'm gonna expect to be paid that even
- 00:49:00though the going rate's a hundred
- 00:49:01thousand dollars
- 00:49:02otherwise i'm not going to do it you
- 00:49:04know so
- 00:49:05gather the information gather the data
- 00:49:07and and then see what works for you you
- 00:49:09know i mean
- 00:49:10i i remember a long long time ago i was
- 00:49:13doing a favor for an executive who
- 00:49:14i had been doing some consulting for and
- 00:49:17he asked me could you help me to find an
- 00:49:18assistant and so this assistant comes in
- 00:49:21i have her resume in front of me and for
- 00:49:24that
- 00:49:24in those days for that job it was worth
- 00:49:26about forty thousand dollars
- 00:49:28that was what a decent wage for a
- 00:49:30assistant to a person like that
- 00:49:32this assistant sits down in front of me
- 00:49:34i'm looking at her resume and i said to
- 00:49:36her what kind of salary are looking to
- 00:49:37show and she said fifty thousand dollars
- 00:49:39and i said fifty thousand dollars and
- 00:49:40she said yes i said why
- 00:49:42and she said because i'm worth it and
- 00:49:44i'm looking at
- 00:49:45her experience i'm interviewing her
- 00:49:48frankly i would have not even paid her
- 00:49:49forty thousand dollars but she wanted 50
- 00:49:51because she thought she was worth it
- 00:49:53unless i'm worth that kind of thing so
- 00:49:55there's there's so many variables that's
- 00:49:58why i say it's important to
- 00:49:59to see the government has one scale
- 00:50:02that's too low
- 00:50:03for first for a good quality assistant
- 00:50:06the government scale
- 00:50:07is too low hr will probably pump that up
- 00:50:09maybe a little bit more
- 00:50:11and then you've got the general
- 00:50:12prevailing for your area and then you've
- 00:50:14got that higher level of assistance so
- 00:50:15it depends on the level your assistant
- 00:50:17is
- 00:50:18and what they've been making etc to kind
- 00:50:20of to get a good feel for it
- 00:50:23pay them fairly honestly you know the
- 00:50:25job is
- 00:50:26really really hard if you've got a good
- 00:50:28assistant they're working really hard so
- 00:50:30so don't try to
- 00:50:31you know force them down for five ten
- 00:50:34thousand dollars that you can well
- 00:50:35afford to pay them just pay them
- 00:50:37yeah well into that point of the person
- 00:50:40who
- 00:50:40was so sure you know that she was worth
- 00:50:4350 000 a year
- 00:50:44i'll just say i'm amazed when i
- 00:50:46interview people
- 00:50:47how many people have no idea
- 00:50:50like well i don't know what do you think
- 00:50:53you know
- 00:50:54i mean or they'll have a very broad
- 00:50:55range you know and it's
- 00:50:57so there's something i think to be said
- 00:50:59for people who are very clear
- 00:51:01about it's this amount and you know
- 00:51:03whether it's because they're worth it or
- 00:51:04they have some other rationale but
- 00:51:06there's something yeah
- 00:51:08a lot of assistants will know what
- 00:51:09they're making in their current job
- 00:51:11and they're they're going to move for an
- 00:51:13incremental pay increase obviously
- 00:51:15you know whether it's it's 10 or 15
- 00:51:18it just depends on on where they go to
- 00:51:20work but one place that i was working
- 00:51:23they said to me look we're going to put
- 00:51:25you in at the current salary that you're
- 00:51:27on
- 00:51:27and then and in 90 days we'll give you
- 00:51:30the salary that you're asking for
- 00:51:32and i said to her actually in 90 days
- 00:51:33i'm going to want more than the salary
- 00:51:35or i'm asking for right now
- 00:51:37because you'll get to see me in action
- 00:51:39and without a doubt you're going to know
- 00:51:41that i'm worth more than what i'm asking
- 00:51:42for right now so
- 00:51:43it's up to you i can come in at the
- 00:51:45salary and in 90 days you pay me more
- 00:51:47because i'm not going to accept the
- 00:51:49salary in 90 days that i'm asking for
- 00:51:51right now
- 00:51:51you drive a hard bargain jen no
- 00:51:54it's it's knowing my value and my worth
- 00:51:57yeah they they've never seen anybody
- 00:51:59like me that's truth brian so they can't
- 00:52:01put a
- 00:52:01a dollar value on what i'm asking for
- 00:52:04because they've never seen it before
- 00:52:06yeah but i've seen that i know what i
- 00:52:08can do
- 00:52:09so they they they have my background
- 00:52:12they have my credentials they know who i
- 00:52:14work for
- 00:52:15they're listening to me talk they're
- 00:52:16listing me to give them examples of what
- 00:52:18i've done and who i've done it for
- 00:52:20they have to be able to make a decision
- 00:52:21based on that that makes sense
- 00:52:24you know something that i've seen is
- 00:52:26it's interesting i have a hard time even
- 00:52:28formulating this question but
- 00:52:29i remember when i read about certain
- 00:52:31executives i mean and this doesn't
- 00:52:33surprise me
- 00:52:34right because about executives who run
- 00:52:36who run
- 00:52:37fortune 500 companies or fortune 50
- 00:52:39companies that
- 00:52:41i think at that level of business it's
- 00:52:43all consuming
- 00:52:44you know to be there it's every waking
- 00:52:46moment their whole life is oriented
- 00:52:48around that role and unless you've seen
- 00:52:50it or experienced it
- 00:52:52you're not even aware that it's possible
- 00:52:54that someone would live and work that
- 00:52:55way
- 00:52:56right and of course not everyone chooses
- 00:52:59but people
- 00:53:00who support people like that assistants
- 00:53:02who support people like that and even
- 00:53:03those who aren't necessarily running
- 00:53:05fortune 500 but anybody who's driven
- 00:53:07who's focused who's hungry and
- 00:53:09determined
- 00:53:10that they make their whole life about
- 00:53:11what they do and they expect the people
- 00:53:13who work with them to be the same way
- 00:53:15to where they're calling meetings at 10
- 00:53:17pm or they're asking
- 00:53:19you know and expecting replies to emails
- 00:53:21sent at five in the morning you know and
- 00:53:23this kind of thing
- 00:53:24and it's not surprising to me to see
- 00:53:26that the executive assistants
- 00:53:28who thrive or maybe even just survive in
- 00:53:30that environment are those who are
- 00:53:32willing
- 00:53:32also to orient their life around that
- 00:53:36business and what i mean at what point
- 00:53:39is it unreasonable this assumes there is
- 00:53:42a point at which it's unreasonable
- 00:53:43but at what point is it unreasonable to
- 00:53:46expect an
- 00:53:47assistant to respond you know to
- 00:53:50to things or to do work outside of those
- 00:53:52office hours of whatever eight to
- 00:53:54six or something i mean i think you
- 00:53:56touched on a little earlier saying
- 00:53:58younger managers especially are
- 00:53:59uncomfortable
- 00:54:00asking you know these kinds of things
- 00:54:02but what's the line there
- 00:54:04between you know expecting somebody to
- 00:54:06be that kind of assistant who will also
- 00:54:08devote
- 00:54:09themselves entirely to this kind of to
- 00:54:12your work because that's the key thing
- 00:54:14it's it's about you what do you where's
- 00:54:16that line jack welch's assistant wrote a
- 00:54:18book
- 00:54:19and he wrote the forward to the book and
- 00:54:21he said
- 00:54:22there's something of a madness and he
- 00:54:25didn't notice exact words but there's
- 00:54:26something of a madness and a
- 00:54:28person who wants to be an executive
- 00:54:30assistant because they have such
- 00:54:32outrageous demands placed on them you
- 00:54:34know and
- 00:54:35he got that so clearly there's something
- 00:54:37there's a
- 00:54:38something of a madness for an assistant
- 00:54:41to be working
- 00:54:42at that level at that speed at that pace
- 00:54:44with their executive who's getting paid
- 00:54:46a hundred times what they're being paid
- 00:54:47sometimes right i mean the the
- 00:54:49remuneration the difference in the
- 00:54:51remuneration is
- 00:54:52is is inconceivable sometimes i had a
- 00:54:55couple of bosses who
- 00:54:56gave me very good bonuses i was on a
- 00:55:00certain salary but then i got bonuses
- 00:55:02and this is a good way to remunerate
- 00:55:05your assistant is to
- 00:55:06in that time when they've done something
- 00:55:08that is so
- 00:55:10unimaginable you should give them a
- 00:55:13bonus
- 00:55:13you know just and i've had my my
- 00:55:15executive give me the bonus out of their
- 00:55:17own pockets
- 00:55:17and i talk in my book about gregory
- 00:55:19because david ranker who would give his
- 00:55:20assistant a bonus
- 00:55:22out of his own pocket because he said
- 00:55:24she's there side by side with me
- 00:55:26doing this stuff she sees how much money
- 00:55:28is coming in i want a bonus plan she's
- 00:55:31not
- 00:55:31because of the hierarchy of the
- 00:55:33organization the way this custom
- 00:55:34company is set up so he would give her
- 00:55:37when he got his bonus he gave her a
- 00:55:38bonus you know
- 00:55:39but there's executive assistants you
- 00:55:42can't pay them
- 00:55:43for the dedication that they give you
- 00:55:46you can't
- 00:55:47i mean you can't even if you're if you
- 00:55:48think you're paying them
- 00:55:50a good salary a livable wage they're
- 00:55:53constantly overrun above i'm speaking
- 00:55:55now about an exceptional executive
- 00:55:57assistant that i talk about in my book
- 00:55:58i'm not speaking about
- 00:55:59average assistant or a good assistant i
- 00:56:01mean somebody who
- 00:56:02is just a caliber you can't even imagine
- 00:56:05until you see them in action this is
- 00:56:07what i say
- 00:56:07you know an exceptional executive
- 00:56:09assistant in full flight is is a wonder
- 00:56:11to behold you just can't imagine how
- 00:56:13they perform
- 00:56:14but you're getting so for me so i'm i'm
- 00:56:16getting a tremendous buzz from it
- 00:56:18because i love what i do
- 00:56:19the high that i'm getting from having
- 00:56:21performed something that
- 00:56:23is so difficult or so time-consuming or
- 00:56:27so
- 00:56:28vexing to my brain you know or if your
- 00:56:30boss says to you how did you do that
- 00:56:32i don't know i just did it you know you
- 00:56:35you've been doing it and doing it and
- 00:56:37you've got your fundamentals in place
- 00:56:39and so you're just
- 00:56:41able to perform that right but there's
- 00:56:43there's a joy of achievement and there's
- 00:56:46a
- 00:56:47a willingness to to extend yourself and
- 00:56:50give yourself and this is what i say
- 00:56:52the fundamental question is can i give
- 00:56:54my life force to this person
- 00:56:56that i'm sitting here across the desk
- 00:56:58looking at this person
- 00:57:00can i see myself giving them what they
- 00:57:03need what it's going to take
- 00:57:04you have to ask that fundamental
- 00:57:06question and and they have to
- 00:57:09be comfortable about can i be around
- 00:57:12this person are
- 00:57:13they going to be somebody to whom i want
- 00:57:15to
- 00:57:16give everything you know do i want to
- 00:57:18share all of my information my family
- 00:57:20my financials my my deep most thoughts
- 00:57:23my my hopes and my dreams and my desire
- 00:57:25for for
- 00:57:26uh for my business so it really
- 00:57:30it's it's not something that can be done
- 00:57:32lightly and executives really ought to
- 00:57:33give it a lot more thought than they do
- 00:57:36you know one of the things you had
- 00:57:37mentioned about can i take a road trip
- 00:57:38with this person you'll remember in the
- 00:57:39book i talk about mitt romney and his
- 00:57:41assistant right
- 00:57:42they they they too they were on the road
- 00:57:44together all the time
- 00:57:46and he said mitt was the kind of person
- 00:57:48who would say okay let me take over the
- 00:57:49driving so you can do
- 00:57:50what it is that you you need to be able
- 00:57:52to do you can't drive
- 00:57:54and make the appointments at the same
- 00:57:55time and all that kind of stuff so
- 00:57:57they worked incredibly well together
- 00:57:59they took road trips together and a lot
- 00:58:01of assistance
- 00:58:02nowadays especially because flying
- 00:58:04private is so
- 00:58:05is so prevalent assistants will go with
- 00:58:07their boss in years gone by an assistant
- 00:58:10flying on a jet with the boss was
- 00:58:11really huge prestige i mean you
- 00:58:14really wow really she does watch she
- 00:58:17flies on his private jet you know that
- 00:58:18kind of thing
- 00:58:19now it's it's becoming more and more
- 00:58:21accustomed and i see a lot of
- 00:58:22a lot but i see ads coming up where
- 00:58:24executives are saying
- 00:58:25you have to travel with me and yes it's
- 00:58:27private travel but you're gonna have to
- 00:58:29be able to travel with me
- 00:58:30so yeah you have to be able it's like a
- 00:58:32marriage right you know whether you're
- 00:58:34getting along with somebody
- 00:58:35taking a long trip together and if
- 00:58:37you're in a hotel room and you're
- 00:58:38sharing a bathroom i mean i always say
- 00:58:40my marriage survives a lot because we
- 00:58:42had separate bathrooms but
- 00:58:43uh you're in a hotel you know you're in
- 00:58:45a hotel you're sharing
- 00:58:47everything you're in that space can you
- 00:58:49get along with this person can you be
- 00:58:51this is what's happening right now with
- 00:58:52the lockdown you know can peop people
- 00:58:54are going crazy they can't be together
- 00:58:56anymore so
- 00:58:56this is all the things you have to look
- 00:58:58at and they're in a relationship
- 00:59:00yeah and what you're saying and you know
- 00:59:02so much of what you've written
- 00:59:03really just confirms for me that i think
- 00:59:06there's
- 00:59:06really a certain there is a certain kind
- 00:59:09of person
- 00:59:10who who really not just enjoys this but
- 00:59:12excels at it
- 00:59:14and it is difficult for me to quantify
- 00:59:17or describe
- 00:59:18but this desire to serve you know is a
- 00:59:21huge one
- 00:59:22you know somebody who enjoys those what
- 00:59:25i would say those tricky situations the
- 00:59:27problem solving like you said the
- 00:59:28anticipation
- 00:59:30you know and it has a large degree of
- 00:59:31common sense and at the end of the day
- 00:59:33it seems to me that
- 00:59:34somebody is either that kind of person
- 00:59:37or they're
- 00:59:37not but that's that's a generalization i
- 00:59:40know
- 00:59:40yeah and you know the thing about the
- 00:59:42assistant is that
- 00:59:44they are just simply there for their
- 00:59:45executive you know
- 00:59:47one of the things i talked in the book
- 00:59:48was about the guy calling his assistant
- 00:59:50on thanksgiving
- 00:59:52dinner she's having thanksgiving dinner
- 00:59:53and he wants her to book her flight to
- 00:59:54california the next morning
- 00:59:56and her family is saying look tell him
- 00:59:58so he could hunt
- 00:59:59right i mean that was uh golf he wanted
- 01:00:01to play golf
- 01:00:02yes yes he wanted to play golf she said
- 01:00:05sure
- 01:00:05i'll take care of that wouldn't many
- 01:00:07people just think that guy was an a-hole
- 01:00:09it's like hey let me interrupt your
- 01:00:10thanksgiving so i can go golfing
- 01:00:12i mean they don't that's not the way the
- 01:00:15assistant sees it
- 01:00:16it's sure he wants to do it i'm there to
- 01:00:18help him to do it that's
- 01:00:19that's it there's there's none of that
- 01:00:22he's an a-hole he's an ego he's a jerk
- 01:00:25the people who think that way
- 01:00:27don't belong in that role the assistant
- 01:00:29will never think that way what a jerk
- 01:00:31calling me at eight o'clock in the
- 01:00:32morning i had this one boss and you'd
- 01:00:33call me
- 01:00:34at eight o'clock in the morning just to
- 01:00:36check in i loved it
- 01:00:38just to check and to say hey jan here
- 01:00:40are some of the things i've got on my
- 01:00:41mind for today so when you get in the
- 01:00:42office i've left you this or whatever it
- 01:00:44is
- 01:00:45that to me the trust level of calling me
- 01:00:48up and saying hey you know we're side by
- 01:00:50side in this we're partnering in this
- 01:00:51here's what what i want to accomplish
- 01:00:53today here's my expectations
- 01:00:55this is what happened overnight you know
- 01:00:57you're taken into their confidence
- 01:00:59an assistant wants that you know they're
- 01:01:01never going to say why is he calling me
- 01:01:02at home at 8 o'clock in the morning i'm
- 01:01:04going to be in the office in an hour
- 01:01:05never they would never question it
- 01:01:07never yeah well because i do want to go
- 01:01:11back to the
- 01:01:12the tony robbins thing that's pretty
- 01:01:13pretty unique experience
- 01:01:15for sure and i understand that so you
- 01:01:18were
- 01:01:18an executive assistant to tony robbins
- 01:01:21and i understand during that role you
- 01:01:22had an assistant so you were an
- 01:01:24assistant
- 01:01:24with an assistant yes in quite a few of
- 01:01:26my roles i've had an assistant because
- 01:01:28of the sheer load of the work you know
- 01:01:29it's just
- 01:01:30just too much for one person to do yeah
- 01:01:33what was that experience like what
- 01:01:36working for tony working with an
- 01:01:37assistant
- 01:01:38yeah both yeah we're working for tony
- 01:01:41so tony is what you see is what you get
- 01:01:44as you know him
- 01:01:45in his public persona that's how he is
- 01:01:48that's the person he is
- 01:01:49one of my colleagues who worked me at
- 01:01:51robin she just would say
- 01:01:53tony is just all-consuming he's just
- 01:01:55constantly all-consuming information
- 01:01:58everything he just he's just on all the
- 01:02:00time
- 01:02:01and to work with somebody like that you
- 01:02:03have to be on all the time you have to
- 01:02:05be on your toes and in fact i
- 01:02:06i get asked this a lot by people what's
- 01:02:08it like to work for someone like tony
- 01:02:10robbins
- 01:02:11and they here's what they expect to hear
- 01:02:15oh it's so exciting it's such fun i meet
- 01:02:17fabulous people
- 01:02:18it's hard work you can't even begin to
- 01:02:20imagine how hard it is
- 01:02:22to constantly be supporting somebody
- 01:02:24who's generating that sheer volume
- 01:02:26all the time you you i mean you have to
- 01:02:29just be there on
- 01:02:30constantly alert for what they need
- 01:02:33which is every executive but but tony
- 01:02:35it's times 100 right because of the just
- 01:02:37the sheer volume of what he's churning
- 01:02:39out all the time his brain is going
- 01:02:40constantly
- 01:02:42it's very exciting it's very dynamic and
- 01:02:44it can be exhausting so you have to pace
- 01:02:46yourself
- 01:02:47i'm not good at that i'm all out all the
- 01:02:49time
- 01:02:50and interestingly i'll tell you this
- 01:02:52when i actually left that job
- 01:02:54i had gone to see a naturopath and he
- 01:02:56said to me your adrenals are
- 01:02:58shot he said it's going to take a lot to
- 01:03:01turn this ship around
- 01:03:03because you are just your mind is still
- 01:03:06functioning you know and you're just
- 01:03:07keeping on you said but your body
- 01:03:10needs a rest so that's not something i
- 01:03:13to me if if i can make it happen i'm
- 01:03:15going to make it happen
- 01:03:17that's an assistant then they're they're
- 01:03:19going and
- 01:03:20assistants talk a lot about this about
- 01:03:21burnout and things like that and being
- 01:03:23aware
- 01:03:24and now in this day and age it's my you
- 01:03:26become much more aware of it
- 01:03:28in years gone by it was you just
- 01:03:30exhausted yourself you just wore
- 01:03:31yourself out because you were there
- 01:03:33to do the job that your executive
- 01:03:34required it's so interesting you know
- 01:03:37i was when my book first came on i did
- 01:03:39an interview with a woman's
- 01:03:41podcast and she was asking me what's you
- 01:03:44know
- 01:03:44how how do you even dare to
- 01:03:47assume you can support someone like tony
- 01:03:49robbins and i said to her
- 01:03:52well because i'm as good at what i do as
- 01:03:54he is what he does
- 01:03:56and she said oh my god i can't believe
- 01:03:59a woman would say that she's as good at
- 01:04:02what she does as
- 01:04:04tony robbins is and i well that's the
- 01:04:06truth
- 01:04:07he's just i'm as good at what i do as he
- 01:04:09is what he does if i didn't
- 01:04:11know that about myself i couldn't
- 01:04:12support him i had to know
- 01:04:15i'm equal to this job if i didn't know
- 01:04:17that i couldn't possibly do it
- 01:04:19i would fail so you know this is the
- 01:04:22confidence and the thing about tony
- 01:04:24is that he really took the time
- 01:04:28to find the right assistant and he took
- 01:04:30the time to be
- 01:04:31truthful with me and honest with me this
- 01:04:34is how i work this is how my company is
- 01:04:37this is these are the key people who are
- 01:04:38around me this is how they are this is
- 01:04:40how they think this is how they protect
- 01:04:42me
- 01:04:43you're gonna have to come into this
- 01:04:44environment and you're gonna have to
- 01:04:46manage it
- 01:04:47you know and he was so honest my
- 01:04:50interview with him was over two hours
- 01:04:53sitting there having him just telling me
- 01:04:54this is what i want and getting a feel
- 01:04:56for who i was
- 01:04:58and really he i think there was a real
- 01:05:01excitement on both our parts
- 01:05:03that there was this opportunity for us
- 01:05:04to be able to
- 01:05:06work and support each other and be our
- 01:05:08very best because there are a lot of
- 01:05:09similarities
- 01:05:10in in our in our personalities and our
- 01:05:12characteristics and the way we worked
- 01:05:14so it was it was a good a good fit
- 01:05:17that's great
- 01:05:18what what were the years you worked
- 01:05:19together i was there
- 01:05:2190 91 to 94
- 01:05:24something like that wow right on when he
- 01:05:27was still there in san diego
- 01:05:29yes that's right he was still in san
- 01:05:30diego and after i left he was in san
- 01:05:33diego for a while and then he moved
- 01:05:35to florida where he is now you leave
- 01:05:36yeah he's his his company is still here
- 01:05:39the headquarters is still here
- 01:05:40yeah that's right he still has an office
- 01:05:42here yeah and i'm still in touch with a
- 01:05:44lot of people i i used to work with
- 01:05:46in my robin's days interesting that
- 01:05:47doesn't surprise me at all it's a it's
- 01:05:49an amazing community yeah
- 01:05:50so many people there and have been you
- 01:05:52know for decades
- 01:05:54so that's great well jan what what else
- 01:05:57what haven't we covered
- 01:05:58that you think is worth covering still
- 01:06:02that's a big question but i know we've
- 01:06:03covered so much but what what haven't we
- 01:06:05touched on that might be worth
- 01:06:07covering you know i i really honestly
- 01:06:10truly want executives
- 01:06:12to read my book for the simple reason
- 01:06:16that i want them to understand the true
- 01:06:18nature of an executive assistant
- 01:06:21i want them to understand the true
- 01:06:23nature of the role of the executive
- 01:06:25assistant
- 01:06:26and how that role can be so beneficial
- 01:06:30to you
- 01:06:31in your role as an executive in
- 01:06:33accomplishing your goals
- 01:06:35in you learn a lot about yourself
- 01:06:38in learning to work so closely and
- 01:06:41really so intimately with another person
- 01:06:43you know richard branson said in my book
- 01:06:45that you know you have to be good
- 01:06:47friends with your assistant because
- 01:06:48you're just together all the time
- 01:06:50he travels with his assistant all the
- 01:06:52time all over the world right
- 01:06:54i don't know that you necessarily have
- 01:06:56to be good friends
- 01:06:57but you have to respect each other if
- 01:06:59you don't respect each other
- 01:07:01it's never going to happen because
- 01:07:04you're making demands on each other
- 01:07:06that there are sometimes you might say
- 01:07:09god i don't
- 01:07:10not that he shouldn't ask me to do it i
- 01:07:12don't i don't want to do it i mean i
- 01:07:14gotta
- 01:07:14call on so so much more effort to make
- 01:07:17this happen
- 01:07:18but i respect this person i trust them i
- 01:07:21know why they're
- 01:07:22asking me for this and i'm willing to do
- 01:07:25it i'm willing to do that one more thing
- 01:07:27for them and i think that my book will
- 01:07:31give you a
- 01:07:31very good accounting of a true executive
- 01:07:35assistant and as i say in the book
- 01:07:36why you should not settle for anything
- 01:07:38less that's the key
- 01:07:40be sure about what you want know what
- 01:07:42you want
- 01:07:44and find somebody who's the very best
- 01:07:46fit for that
- 01:07:47because then it's serving you and it's
- 01:07:49serving them because you're giving them
- 01:07:51a chance to show what they can do
- 01:07:52and assistants love showing what they
- 01:07:55can do
- 01:07:56so it's it's a harmonious relationship
- 01:07:58it's a mutual relationship it's a
- 01:07:59beneficial relationship
- 01:08:01and it's a much maligned role because
- 01:08:05as i explained in the book you remember
- 01:08:07the evolution of the assistant right
- 01:08:09where you start where
- 01:08:10you've got the reason why there's a
- 01:08:12misunderstanding about
- 01:08:13the assistant role is because you've got
- 01:08:15people who are typed with saying their
- 01:08:16secretaries and secretaries saying
- 01:08:18they're assistants and assistants
- 01:08:19saying they're executive assistants and
- 01:08:21now they want to be called what business
- 01:08:23partners
- 01:08:24and they want to be called strategic
- 01:08:26business partners and executive business
- 01:08:28partners
- 01:08:29all all of this stuff comes about
- 01:08:31because
- 01:08:32people don't really know what the role
- 01:08:34is they don't know what to expect
- 01:08:35and because they don't know what to
- 01:08:36expect they get confused and then they
- 01:08:39say well should i really be asking them
- 01:08:40to do it
- 01:08:41yes you should and my book very very
- 01:08:44clearly
- 01:08:45explains the role and the purpose of the
- 01:08:48assistant and i
- 01:08:49i think that you will truly get an
- 01:08:52inside look
- 01:08:53on what the role is about and how that
- 01:08:56role can serve you
- 01:08:57so that's the reason why i wrote the
- 01:08:59book because i really feel that the the
- 01:09:01role has been maligned
- 01:09:03and assistants are not understood and
- 01:09:06they're
- 01:09:06constantly fighting for recognition and
- 01:09:09i see it especially in this day and age
- 01:09:11where assistants are
- 01:09:12constantly looking for ways and
- 01:09:15sometimes
- 01:09:16inaccurately saying they're better than
- 01:09:18they are but they're looking for that
- 01:09:20recognition
- 01:09:21all the time and they're looking for
- 01:09:22that confidence because it hasn't been
- 01:09:24given to them
- 01:09:26over the years so this is a really good
- 01:09:28opportunity for people to understand the
- 01:09:30true role of the executive assistant
- 01:09:32and how it can benefit the executive
- 01:09:34that's great no
- 01:09:35thank you for that and and the book does
- 01:09:37a great job of that
- 01:09:39so yeah helping people the way i think
- 01:09:41of it is kind of almost
- 01:09:42map the possibility that working with a
- 01:09:46high performing executive assistant can
- 01:09:48be
- 01:09:49that that's great well jan i know we're
- 01:09:52coming close to the end of the time
- 01:09:53that we have allotted for this interview
- 01:09:55i wonder i have
- 01:09:57the enlightening lightning round
- 01:09:58questions a series of brief questions
- 01:10:01i'm wondering and then i have two
- 01:10:03questions related to
- 01:10:04writing and the creative process sure go
- 01:10:06ahead are you okay to do that of course
- 01:10:07yes
- 01:10:08okay all right let's let's go there then
- 01:10:12okay question number one please complete
- 01:10:16the following sentence with something
- 01:10:19other than
- 01:10:20a box of chocolates okay life is like a
- 01:10:24life is like a
- 01:10:28this makes me laugh because many years
- 01:10:30ago a friend of mine sent me a greeting
- 01:10:32card
- 01:10:33and it was a picture of a wooden chair a
- 01:10:36rustic wooden chair and it had a bowl of
- 01:10:37cherries on it
- 01:10:38and the caption was life is like a chair
- 01:10:40of bullies
- 01:10:44okay look you know life is all of those
- 01:10:48things right life is absurd life is
- 01:10:50life is magnificent life is worth living
- 01:10:53that's really all i can say about it
- 01:10:55life is worth living
- 01:10:56yeah beautiful okay thank you question
- 01:10:59number two
- 01:11:00and here i'm borrowing peter thiel's
- 01:11:02famous question what important truth do
- 01:11:04very few people agree with you on
- 01:11:06unfortunately very few people agree with
- 01:11:09me on
- 01:11:10knowing that the universe is always
- 01:11:12working
- 01:11:13on my behalf so that the universe is
- 01:11:14always working on their behalf always
- 01:11:16working on our behalf
- 01:11:19beautiful thank you and question number
- 01:11:21three
- 01:11:22and i know this might be a stretch but
- 01:11:24if you were required every day for the
- 01:11:26rest of your life to wear a t-shirt with
- 01:11:27a slogan on it or a phrase or saying or
- 01:11:29a quote or a quip
- 01:11:31what would the shirt say you know it
- 01:11:32would say something i borrowed from les
- 01:11:34brown the motivational speaker because i
- 01:11:37every time i talked to him i'd say hi
- 01:11:39les how are you and he'd say i'm blessed
- 01:11:41and highly favored
- 01:11:42so that's what i would put on my t-shirt
- 01:11:44i'm blessed and highly favored
- 01:11:46awesome i like that thank you okay
- 01:11:49question number four
- 01:11:50what book other than your own have you
- 01:11:53gifted or recommended most often
- 01:11:55oh that's an easy question i've given
- 01:11:57two books ayn rand's atlas shrugged
- 01:12:00and gurg jeff's meetings with remarkable
- 01:12:02men those are the ones
- 01:12:04a big fan of iran i i truly like
- 01:12:08her self-reliance message you know that
- 01:12:11ultimately we are rational beings and
- 01:12:13and we are responsible for ourselves
- 01:12:15and that we should really take take that
- 01:12:18responsibility seriously that we are
- 01:12:20rational beings
- 01:12:21and this and it expands to the whole
- 01:12:23thing about
- 01:12:24you know limited government because we
- 01:12:26are we deem ourselves to be worthy of
- 01:12:29making our
- 01:12:29our best decisions things like that
- 01:12:31right so a fan of iron rand
- 01:12:33and meetings with remarkable men because
- 01:12:35guru jeff is such a
- 01:12:37major figure in the metaphysical
- 01:12:39spiritual world
- 01:12:40and he tells about this all the
- 01:12:43different people he met
- 01:12:44along the way of his of his journey
- 01:12:47and he talks of course he was originally
- 01:12:49from a part of georgia armenia
- 01:12:51and my father from on my father's side i
- 01:12:53am part armenian so i i
- 01:12:55on on a visceral level connected so much
- 01:12:58with the stories that he was telling and
- 01:13:00the people he was talking about because
- 01:13:01i
- 01:13:01i felt that connection with them and
- 01:13:03when i was traveling
- 01:13:04in turkey i didn't realize it at the
- 01:13:06time because i didn't quite know my
- 01:13:08family history at the time
- 01:13:09but i felt a real pull
- 01:13:13a real like i've been here before
- 01:13:16feeling you know and
- 01:13:18i went and i funnily enough i had that
- 01:13:20book with me when i was traveling at the
- 01:13:21time and the stories that he was telling
- 01:13:23in the places i was going
- 01:13:24it it made a deep impression on me
- 01:13:27meetings with remarkable men
- 01:13:29that book has been on my list i actually
- 01:13:31bought that book used at a bookstore in
- 01:13:33san diego
- 01:13:34read it you'll really enjoy it because
- 01:13:36you travel a lot
- 01:13:38and just just and the respect and the
- 01:13:40love that he has for his father and for
- 01:13:42his culture and everything you know i i
- 01:13:44think you'll really enjoy it
- 01:13:46right on and then i understand ospensky
- 01:13:48was his
- 01:13:49uspensky oh my gosh the fourth way he
- 01:13:51was his he was his
- 01:13:53he was like his assistant right his face
- 01:13:55and voice to the world i mean he was
- 01:13:56really
- 01:13:57the person who cataloged and brought
- 01:13:59gorgeous
- 01:14:00message to the world uh spensky very
- 01:14:02very important man
- 01:14:03all right don and what are you what are
- 01:14:05you reading right now well i've just
- 01:14:07finished reading a book by steve
- 01:14:10schwartzman
- 01:14:11who is the ceo founder of blackstone
- 01:14:15it's called what it what it takes a
- 01:14:17fascinating book
- 01:14:18fascinating man all of the things that
- 01:14:21he's done
- 01:14:21in his life you know his he came from a
- 01:14:23family of
- 01:14:24shop owners i guess that his face
- 01:14:26father's family they had a linen and
- 01:14:28curtain store
- 01:14:29when he was 10 he started working in
- 01:14:31there so you know not unlike me i didn't
- 01:14:33work in a store but my father was an
- 01:14:34entrepreneur
- 01:14:35and so i got my foundation and love of
- 01:14:37business and all of
- 01:14:39my common sense and all that from my
- 01:14:41family business
- 01:14:42and and seeing how families operate in
- 01:14:44that entrepreneurial
- 01:14:46environment and how they think and
- 01:14:48there's a there's a real common sense
- 01:14:50and a real practicality
- 01:14:52when you're raised in a in a business
- 01:14:54environment you know yeah
- 01:14:55yeah that's great very very very very
- 01:14:57interesting book and he you know he
- 01:14:59just the people that he's met along the
- 01:15:01way who
- 01:15:02are so influential in business people
- 01:15:04like jack welsh and sanzell in the real
- 01:15:06estate world
- 01:15:07and all the different stories he tells
- 01:15:08and he talks about a lot of things
- 01:15:10this is why i say you've got to be
- 01:15:12around your executive to hear those
- 01:15:14stories and those background things
- 01:15:15assistant can
- 01:15:16can learn from the executive where he
- 01:15:18also talks about the fundamentals
- 01:15:20and getting the fundamentals in place
- 01:15:22and that being something that you can
- 01:15:24then build on
- 01:15:25also talking about how things were in
- 01:15:26the financial world
- 01:15:28when he started you did everything by
- 01:15:30hand now you it's all algorithms and
- 01:15:32it's all done for you but then you had
- 01:15:33to sweat it all out you know
- 01:15:35and he tells all these fantastic story
- 01:15:37very very interesting book i highly
- 01:15:39recommend it
- 01:15:40what it takes by steve schwartzman
- 01:15:42that's great thank you for that
- 01:15:44okay next question is it's about travel
- 01:15:47so you traveled
- 01:15:48a ton what's one travel hack meaning
- 01:15:51something you do
- 01:15:52or something you take with you and you
- 01:15:54travel to make your travel
- 01:15:55less painful or more enjoyable i i do
- 01:15:58two things i've done them forever the
- 01:16:00first is i always take my own tea with
- 01:16:02me i drink a special japanese tea
- 01:16:04i take that with me everywhere i go no
- 01:16:06matter what the situation or
- 01:16:07circumstance one stuff that tea
- 01:16:10and i am centered i'm home what's the
- 01:16:12tea oh
- 01:16:13it's a japanese tea it's called genmai
- 01:16:16it's a rice
- 01:16:17uh smoked rice and green tea just buy it
- 01:16:20online now or
- 01:16:21yeah i buy it in the national food store
- 01:16:24i can buy it online
- 01:16:25the best place of course to buy it is
- 01:16:26when you're in japan and i when i'm in
- 01:16:28japan i buy large quantities and bring
- 01:16:30it back with me
- 01:16:30the bulk is always best but it's not the
- 01:16:32most practical so there's the one brand
- 01:16:35sugimoto they're quite they're a really
- 01:16:36high-end brand and then there's also
- 01:16:38eaten foods
- 01:16:39which is a very common brand here with
- 01:16:41the natural organic in the u.s eating
- 01:16:43foods so i buy theirs as well for
- 01:16:44for convenience wow so tea is one thing
- 01:16:47when you travel what's the other the
- 01:16:48other thing is
- 01:16:49is hand wipes i have no issue with the
- 01:16:52virus right now because
- 01:16:53for years for years i have been taking
- 01:16:56hand wipes i wiped everything down my
- 01:16:58seat
- 01:16:59my everything and my husband and i and
- 01:17:02in the
- 01:17:02now people won't think twice about it
- 01:17:04but in years gone by they would look at
- 01:17:05us like
- 01:17:06you people are neurotic you know but we
- 01:17:08would wipe everything down never go
- 01:17:10anywhere without hand wipes
- 01:17:11two things smart you're always ahead of
- 01:17:13the game
- 01:17:15yeah okay question number six what's one
- 01:17:18thing
- 01:17:19you've started or stopped doing in order
- 01:17:21to live or age well
- 01:17:23you know i i've given up needing to be
- 01:17:25right
- 01:17:26and not be not from an
- 01:17:29ego thing or anything like that but
- 01:17:31simply because
- 01:17:33i wanted to be right not because from
- 01:17:35ego oh i had to be right or i had to put
- 01:17:37somebody else and
- 01:17:38somebody else down it was because i'm a
- 01:17:40very orderly thinker
- 01:17:42and if if thinking if i'm right because
- 01:17:45it's
- 01:17:45orderly and the right way to think then
- 01:17:48that's where my focus is
- 01:17:49no i'm right because of this not because
- 01:17:52you're wrong or not
- 01:17:54not because i'm better but because i'm
- 01:17:55an orderly thinker
- 01:17:57but as i've gotten older i've i've
- 01:18:00learned to
- 01:18:00let that go because it just doesn't seem
- 01:18:03that that necessary anymore and it feels
- 01:18:07a lot easier and i can breathe a lot
- 01:18:09easier so
- 01:18:10letting go of being right and i haven't
- 01:18:12mastered it completely i'm not going to
- 01:18:14fool myself but
- 01:18:15to a large extent yeah letting go of
- 01:18:17waiting to be right
- 01:18:18right on thank you number seven what's
- 01:18:21one thing you wish every american knew
- 01:18:25i wish every american and and not having
- 01:18:27been born in america i wish every
- 01:18:30american
- 01:18:30knew the great gift of freedom that is
- 01:18:33bestowed on us by the founding fathers
- 01:18:36of this country
- 01:18:37it's unlike anything anywhere in the
- 01:18:39world we have
- 01:18:40constitutional rights that can't be
- 01:18:43taken away from us whether we're
- 01:18:45rich or poor if we get into a court of
- 01:18:48law
- 01:18:49if we sue whoever it is we have
- 01:18:52a judge that will make a decision
- 01:18:55hopefully based on the on the
- 01:18:56constitution right
- 01:18:58and we and we have our day in court and
- 01:19:01that gives you such a freedom that other
- 01:19:03countries don't have
- 01:19:04you know they they can't they can people
- 01:19:08they'll say
- 01:19:08i can sue all day long i'm not going to
- 01:19:10i'm not rich i'm not powerful
- 01:19:12we don't have to worry about that in
- 01:19:14this country you know we we have
- 01:19:17we have an intrinsic freedom
- 01:19:20as americans that people need to
- 01:19:24treasure more
- 01:19:25they're there i see too much in this day
- 01:19:27and age people are willing to give away
- 01:19:29that freedom
- 01:19:30for all kinds of for all kinds of
- 01:19:33considerations that
- 01:19:35are not important for expediency and
- 01:19:40americans are born intrinsically free
- 01:19:43because of
- 01:19:45what we have been bequeathed as
- 01:19:47americans
- 01:19:48and this came home to me when the prime
- 01:19:51minister of new zealand when she was
- 01:19:52elected one time she was talking about
- 01:19:54america and she said
- 01:19:55i don't get america and i thought no you
- 01:19:57don't get america because
- 01:19:59in other countries in the world the
- 01:20:01individual isn't
- 01:20:02isn't prized above all else right it's
- 01:20:05the government it's the bureaucracy it's
- 01:20:07it's consensus in america we know as as
- 01:20:10as individuals that we have rights and
- 01:20:12they're enshrined in the constitution
- 01:20:14and and and that's something that we
- 01:20:15expect so i
- 01:20:17i wish americans took their freedom more
- 01:20:20seriously i wish americans learned
- 01:20:22american
- 01:20:22history better than their learning now
- 01:20:25and i say that as somebody who hasn't
- 01:20:26been born an american i i understand
- 01:20:29and you and you'll hear this from people
- 01:20:30who come from other countries who start
- 01:20:32a business
- 01:20:32people from vietnam and places like that
- 01:20:34and they'll say the freedom to start a
- 01:20:35business
- 01:20:36from nothing they came from nothing and
- 01:20:38they've been able to build a business
- 01:20:39and look at these people in new york and
- 01:20:41all over the place
- 01:20:42um sergey brin and larry page of google
- 01:20:45look what they were able to achieve look
- 01:20:46at what these people are achieving
- 01:20:48when the freedom america guarantees it
- 01:20:51is very remarkable it's really special i
- 01:20:54agree
- 01:20:55yeah thank you for that number eight
- 01:20:57what's the most
- 01:20:58important or useful thing you've ever
- 01:21:01learned
- 01:21:02about making relationships work uh
- 01:21:05i can answer that very directly it's
- 01:21:08understanding
- 01:21:10especially in a in a romantic or a love
- 01:21:12relationship it's
- 01:21:13understanding that people love you in
- 01:21:16the way they know how to love
- 01:21:17so there are a lot of people who their
- 01:21:20relationships don't work is they want to
- 01:21:21be loved in a certain way they want
- 01:21:22their love
- 01:21:23people who love them to show them that
- 01:21:25they love them in a certain way because
- 01:21:26that means love to them
- 01:21:27right but if that's not natural for the
- 01:21:30person who is loving you
- 01:21:32to what bring you flowers or sit and
- 01:21:34listen to you or bring you
- 01:21:36you know you know chocolates or take you
- 01:21:38out for a nice dinner or whatever
- 01:21:39if that isn't natural for them just
- 01:21:42because they're not doing that that's
- 01:21:43what you want
- 01:21:44doesn't mean they don't love you they're
- 01:21:46just expressing it in a different way
- 01:21:48right we all express our love in
- 01:21:50different ways and to be able to
- 01:21:52appreciate the way
- 01:21:53somebody loves you is i think what will
- 01:21:56help you have a successful relationship
- 01:21:59just let them love you the way they know
- 01:22:01how to love you
- 01:22:01and be grateful that they do that is a
- 01:22:03really beautiful sentiment
- 01:22:05yeah this is a really i think i want to
- 01:22:07say mature or advanced perspective
- 01:22:09you know to to grasp that and and anyone
- 01:22:12who is willing
- 01:22:13to try that on who hasn't previously
- 01:22:16who's maybe just made their partner
- 01:22:17wrong for not bringing me the flowers i
- 01:22:19wanted or
- 01:22:20you know talking to me like i want or
- 01:22:22whatever that's maybe that could make
- 01:22:23relationships that otherwise don't seem
- 01:22:25to be working work
- 01:22:27yeah you know you know how that came to
- 01:22:28me because somebody once said to me is
- 01:22:30your husband romantic
- 01:22:32and i was thinking to myself is he
- 01:22:34romantic in the traditional way that
- 01:22:37people think
- 01:22:38of romance and then i remembered when we
- 01:22:40were early married
- 01:22:42i was telling him you know about the
- 01:22:44seasons in australia are opposite to the
- 01:22:45way they are in america
- 01:22:47and so when easter came i would get the
- 01:22:49smell of this particular flower that we
- 01:22:50had
- 01:22:51at easter time and i began talking about
- 01:22:53the different flowers and things that i
- 01:22:55liked
- 01:22:56and a year later i discovered that he
- 01:22:59had grown those flowers for me
- 01:23:01in our garden he didn't say anything he
- 01:23:05didn't do anything
- 01:23:06he brought the flowers into the house i
- 01:23:08was like where did that come from he's i
- 01:23:10grew it for you
- 01:23:11that's really beautiful this man this
- 01:23:13man he's
- 01:23:14my husband is unconventional and offbeat
- 01:23:16anyway but you know
- 01:23:18what a thing to do he didn't just go to
- 01:23:19the store and buy it from me he grew it
- 01:23:21for me
- 01:23:22wow what were the flowers jonquils and
- 01:23:25freesias and gardenias i like perfumed
- 01:23:29flowers
- 01:23:29that's beautiful that's really
- 01:23:31thoughtful and the final question in the
- 01:23:33enlightening lightning
- 01:23:34round here is is about money and and the
- 01:23:37question is this
- 01:23:38setting aside compound interest what's
- 01:23:41the most important or useful thing
- 01:23:42you've ever learned about money
- 01:23:44or what's something that you're always
- 01:23:46sure to do with it or you never
- 01:23:48do with it i'm respectful of money
- 01:23:50that's one thing
- 01:23:51i learned that from my parents my
- 01:23:54i guess they were just they were not in
- 01:23:57the depression they would post
- 01:23:58depression but they
- 01:23:59they took you know they took good care
- 01:24:01of money so i learned to be respectful
- 01:24:03of money
- 01:24:04but i don't have a scarcity mentality at
- 01:24:06all because my parents never had a
- 01:24:08scarcity mentality
- 01:24:10and that's a big thing about money is
- 01:24:12that i respected but i
- 01:24:14i don't feel it's hard to come by i've
- 01:24:17never had that attitude about money
- 01:24:19when i need it it's there and i'm
- 01:24:21grateful for access to money
- 01:24:23and i know that money gives me the
- 01:24:25ability more than
- 01:24:27being able to take care of myself it
- 01:24:29helps to be able to be generous with
- 01:24:31people i love
- 01:24:32because i've been able to be a resource
- 01:24:34to people who i
- 01:24:35i love dearly who have not been as
- 01:24:37fortunate as i i have
- 01:24:38sometimes so i've been able to help them
- 01:24:40so money is is a wonderful resource and
- 01:24:42i treat it with a lot of respect
- 01:24:44and i welcome it in my life that's a
- 01:24:47great answer thank you

- 01:26:54i i told you i had two questions but i
- 01:26:56really have three
- 01:26:57and the questions are this i'll just lay
- 01:26:58out the questions the number one is
- 01:27:00when we talked a while back i asked you
- 01:27:02about the process of getting the book
- 01:27:05done
- 01:27:05and it sounded to me like there was a
- 01:27:07story there like you didn't see yourself
- 01:27:09as a writer it wasn't your intention to
- 01:27:10write a book
- 01:27:11yet it happened anyway so the first
- 01:27:13question is what's the story behind the
- 01:27:15book
- 01:27:15the second part the second question
- 01:27:17might be part of that which is then how
- 01:27:18did
- 01:27:19you get the book done so what was the
- 01:27:21actual process of the book done
- 01:27:22and the third is what encouragement or
- 01:27:24advice would you leave others with
- 01:27:26who also want to finish their book
- 01:27:30so those those three maybe it's one big
- 01:27:32question i don't know
- 01:27:33so people have been telling me for years
- 01:27:37write a book jan share what you know
- 01:27:39teach other resistance
- 01:27:41and i would say all the time what i know
- 01:27:44is innate i just do it you know i grew
- 01:27:45up in an entrepreneurial family i
- 01:27:47watched my father and i would always
- 01:27:48give this answer and one day it dawned
- 01:27:52on me
- 01:27:53i have assistance and i've been teaching
- 01:27:55them
- 01:27:56what i know this is how i want it done i
- 01:27:59know you've done it this way but this is
- 01:28:00the right way to do it for us
- 01:28:02because this is why and i was i've been
- 01:28:04giving them instructions so
- 01:28:06certainly this is something that can be
- 01:28:08taught you know
- 01:28:09but i didn't know how to go about
- 01:28:11writing a book and
- 01:28:13coming up with chapters and all that i
- 01:28:14really while i had the content i wasn't
- 01:28:17really that interested in making the
- 01:28:19time to do it just
- 01:28:20didn't really interest me and
- 01:28:24as luck would have it one of my clients
- 01:28:26hired an assistant
- 01:28:28he hired the worst assistant anybody in
- 01:28:30the face of the earth
- 01:28:32and this person just frustrated me no
- 01:28:34one because i had a lot of work
- 01:28:36with this particular executive and so i
- 01:28:38had to constantly work with his
- 01:28:40assistant and this assistant was just
- 01:28:42horrible and i would just be tearing my
- 01:28:45hair out and when my husband
- 01:28:47i'd go to my husband and say do you know
- 01:28:49what blah blah didn't he said to me jan
- 01:28:51write a book about it write a book and
- 01:28:54i'll go
- 01:28:54no i don't have time and i just get
- 01:28:56putting it off putting off all the time
- 01:28:58finally and then i did i started
- 01:29:00cataloging
- 01:29:01what this person was doing and
- 01:29:04what i would have done and the
- 01:29:06circumstances around it
- 01:29:07all of that i started putting making
- 01:29:09notes and then
- 01:29:11when i started my business one of my
- 01:29:14speakers is chester elton
- 01:29:16uh i love chester yeah chester you know
- 01:29:19yeah gratitude absolutely he's wonderful
- 01:29:21wonderful we sent him to speak in all
- 01:29:23sorts of
- 01:29:24wonderful places like dubai and saudi
- 01:29:26arabia and
- 01:29:27in egypt and nigeria and all these
- 01:29:30places and he
- 01:29:31people love him wherever he goes he's
- 01:29:33just the best ambassador for him
- 01:29:34for america even though he's canadian
- 01:29:36he's the best ambassador so
- 01:29:38i was talking to him one day and he said
- 01:29:40to me john it sounds like you have a
- 01:29:42book in you
- 01:29:43and i said well actually chester i've
- 01:29:45made a start on a book but i've never
- 01:29:47done anything with it because
- 01:29:48as my business started to build i gave
- 01:29:50my attention to my business i wasn't
- 01:29:52really you know the book was not a
- 01:29:53priority for me
- 01:29:55and he said that's very interesting and
- 01:29:57then
- 01:29:58he called me up a couple of days later
- 01:30:00and said look i talked to my publisher
- 01:30:02about you
- 01:30:02i mean what a generous guy right i mean
- 01:30:05i just said yeah
- 01:30:06yeah i talked to my publisher about you
- 01:30:09i told her about you
- 01:30:11and i'll send you her email so
- 01:30:14but she'll get in touch with you because
- 01:30:15she has your information i said no
- 01:30:17problem
- 01:30:18anyway i didn't hear from her and so
- 01:30:21i thought i'll just drop her a quick
- 01:30:22line so i sent her an email and i said
- 01:30:23chester elf and told who i was and she
- 01:30:25said oh yes yes
- 01:30:26send me send me a chapter don't fix it
- 01:30:29up just send me what you've got
- 01:30:31i can figure i can read it and i'll know
- 01:30:33whether or not there's something there
- 01:30:35but you know all assistants that's the
- 01:30:37habit i wasn't about to just send
- 01:30:38something off so
- 01:30:39but i didn't really have a chapter
- 01:30:41formulated so what i did was i took
- 01:30:43salient passages from
- 01:30:45different things that i'd written and
- 01:30:48sent them over to her and here it is
- 01:30:51right so
- 01:30:52waited waited impatiently i wanted so
- 01:30:55badly
- 01:30:55does she like it doesn't she like anyway
- 01:30:58she got back to me
- 01:30:59about two weeks or so later and said yes
- 01:31:01there's something here would like to
- 01:31:02publish
- 01:31:03and i was you know exactly just
- 01:31:06thrilled and throwing my hands up and
- 01:31:08excited called with my husband and all
- 01:31:09that stuff but then the real work began
- 01:31:11right because
- 01:31:12now you have a contract and you have a
- 01:31:14deadline and all of those things and i
- 01:31:15realized
- 01:31:16i don't know i don't know what i've got
- 01:31:18all the material and what am i going to
- 01:31:20do with it
- 01:31:21so chester again came to the rescue he
- 01:31:23put me in touch with a
- 01:31:24very high level editor she works for
- 01:31:27nobel prize winners and all these kinds
- 01:31:28of people
- 01:31:29and very very talented very high buck
- 01:31:33way over my head frankly but
- 01:31:36anyway i gave i sent her what i had but
- 01:31:39she was
- 01:31:40too busy on other things and i really
- 01:31:42never got
- 01:31:43the attention that i needed i had you
- 01:31:45know two months before
- 01:31:46the deadline it's it's important for
- 01:31:48people to know this you know
- 01:31:49in choosing an editor two months for the
- 01:31:52deadline i had nothing back from her
- 01:31:53there was nothing i had to center all
- 01:31:55this material
- 01:31:56and she kept saying to me look i'm an
- 01:31:57old hand at this i can do it really fast
- 01:31:58and we can bang it out and
- 01:32:00and then it was a month and i was just
- 01:32:03freaking out so i just said to her look
- 01:32:06you need to tell me what's the situation
- 01:32:08here because
- 01:32:09i'm supposed to turn this book completed
- 01:32:11booking in one month
- 01:32:13and she said to me look i've got this
- 01:32:16client who i've been working with for a
- 01:32:17long time he's a nobel prize winner he's
- 01:32:19paying me a lot of money i can't give
- 01:32:21any more attention to you
- 01:32:22here's a brief outline of where i think
- 01:32:24you should go and let's just leave it at
- 01:32:26that i don't want any more money from
- 01:32:27you just
- 01:32:27here you thank you very much oh no i can
- 01:32:30hardly believe that
- 01:32:32one month out i gathered myself i called
- 01:32:35my publisher she knew who this editor
- 01:32:37was
- 01:32:38and she said to me i believe it i
- 01:32:41believe the story about her
- 01:32:42and she said okay we'll work to a new
- 01:32:45deadline
- 01:32:47go ahead find yourself an editor and we
- 01:32:50we had a new deadline
- 01:32:51now i had i now had to find another
- 01:32:52editor and i
- 01:32:54i tried various avenues different people
- 01:32:57was struggling all of a sudden just let
- 01:33:00it go came across somebody
- 01:33:02who was kind of a broker for putting
- 01:33:04writers and editors together
- 01:33:06and he said to me i have somebody from
- 01:33:08you who's available right now the other
- 01:33:09people who i liked were not available
- 01:33:12and he said she's actually worked at
- 01:33:14your publisher so she knows
- 01:33:16and she knows your editor so she knows
- 01:33:17exactly what it is
- 01:33:19you you gonna need to do and so
- 01:33:22i got all of my stuff i sent it to her
- 01:33:25and she helped me to organize it
- 01:33:27and it was a revelation to me
- 01:33:31chapter one is this and and i sent her
- 01:33:33everything to chapter one and she'd say
- 01:33:35now john we need a summary of the
- 01:33:36chapter
- 01:33:37and go i have to do that yes you have to
- 01:33:39do that every chapter has to have a
- 01:33:40summary you have to
- 01:33:41all of these things that when you see a
- 01:33:43book and you wonder how on earth they do
- 01:33:45this i had to do all of that
- 01:33:47put it all together i would write
- 01:33:48something i would send it to her she'd
- 01:33:50say
- 01:33:51there's not enough information here
- 01:33:52you're repeating that take this from
- 01:33:54here put that over there i mean it was a
- 01:33:55laborious thing to do to write a book
- 01:33:58and people ask me when's the next book
- 01:33:59coming out i just say go away i don't
- 01:34:01want to hear that question
- 01:34:02you know yeah it was it was difficult
- 01:34:05not the subject matter i had the content
- 01:34:07organizing it all making sense of it
- 01:34:10making sure that it was in a format that
- 01:34:12people would want to read because like
- 01:34:14she said
- 01:34:14executives are going to scan it very
- 01:34:16quickly they're going to look at the
- 01:34:16summary and say blah blah blah
- 01:34:18next thing next thing they're not going
- 01:34:19to go through all the details so you
- 01:34:21have to make it
- 01:34:22in such a way that they're going to want
- 01:34:24to look at this book and then
- 01:34:26looking at the summary go back into the
- 01:34:27chapter and read what you've written
- 01:34:30so she was a fantastic editor honestly i
- 01:34:33had stockholm syndrome at the end of it
- 01:34:35because i didn't want to let go of her
- 01:34:37because she had been with me for those
- 01:34:38three or four months and really helped
- 01:34:40me along the way
- 01:34:42got the book done to to the new deadline
- 01:34:45send it in and then i waited for a
- 01:34:48couple
- 01:34:49what seemed like an eternity from my
- 01:34:51editor and
- 01:34:53she wrote back to me early in the
- 01:34:55morning got an email from her and she
- 01:34:57said
- 01:34:57i've got to compliment you this book is
- 01:35:00really
- 01:35:00exactly what we were looking for
- 01:35:02excellent job
- 01:35:04i just broke down and burst into tears
- 01:35:07i mean i sobbed my heart out because of
- 01:35:10the pent up tension
- 01:35:11of am i doing the right thing is she
- 01:35:13going to want this is this worthy of a
- 01:35:15book is this worthy of the publisher of
- 01:35:17the
- 01:35:18advance they've paid me all those things
- 01:35:20you know how do i know i've never
- 01:35:21written a book before
- 01:35:23i liked the final product i felt good
- 01:35:25about it i thought to myself if she
- 01:35:27doesn't like it i'll just
- 01:35:28pay back the the advance and i'll
- 01:35:31publish it myself but fortunately
- 01:35:34she liked it and that's how it happened
- 01:35:37and
- 01:35:37as far as promoting the book i was this
- 01:35:40is this is grace nothing but
- 01:35:42grace ken blanchard of course was in my
- 01:35:44book he i'd known from my days with tony
- 01:35:46robbins so he had a huge network and he
- 01:35:48was very generous to me
- 01:35:50and then dan kennedy who passed away
- 01:35:52unexpectedly last year
- 01:35:54the world's number one marketing guru
- 01:35:55right i i could never have had access to
- 01:35:58him but greg renker
- 01:35:59who did the tony robbins infomercials
- 01:36:01and from guthrie rancher
- 01:36:03you know they're the infomercial
- 01:36:05geniuses of the world
- 01:36:06and uh direct marketers he said to me i
- 01:36:10will put you in touch with dan kennedy
- 01:36:12to
- 01:36:13talk about the the title of the book
- 01:36:15already had the book
- 01:36:16title but he said i'll talk to dan dan
- 01:36:19kennedy this
- 01:36:20high buck who executives are paying tens
- 01:36:22of thousands of dollars for an hour
- 01:36:24first time
- 01:36:25he gave me hours of his time and he said
- 01:36:27to me i don't like you calling it the
- 01:36:29ceo secret weapon
- 01:36:30because entrepreneurs and small business
- 01:36:32people will think it's for
- 01:36:34ceos and not for them and so they won't
- 01:36:37they won't
- 01:36:37buy the book as readily as if if the
- 01:36:40title
- 01:36:40didn't say ceo but my publisher
- 01:36:42absolutely loved the ceo secret weapon
- 01:36:44and she said we are using it
- 01:36:46and i took great pains in the book to
- 01:36:48talk to small business owners and to
- 01:36:50talk to entrepreneurs and share my
- 01:36:52experiences and my love for
- 01:36:53entrepreneurs so that when they read the
- 01:36:55book they would see that this is not
- 01:36:56just about
- 01:36:57you know successful ceos and to my good
- 01:37:00luck when the book came out
- 01:37:02ken blanchard posted to his facebook
- 01:37:05audience
- 01:37:06that this was the book to read and dan
- 01:37:08kennedy
- 01:37:09sent out a blast on my summary of my
- 01:37:12book
- 01:37:12he had i don't know a million something
- 01:37:14people in his database and he blasted my
- 01:37:16book out to them
- 01:37:18so my book debuted on amazon at number
- 01:37:20one in its category
- 01:37:21not not a thing on my part but through
- 01:37:24through dan kennedy and ken blanchard i
- 01:37:26can tell you i was shocked when i saw
- 01:37:27that the book
- 01:37:28my publisher said to me did you see this
- 01:37:30the book is number one
- 01:37:32on amazon in the office i went how on
- 01:37:34earth
- 01:37:35how on earth i hadn't even started to
- 01:37:36use a pr person
- 01:37:38and it's through these two people and
- 01:37:40then word of mouth word of mouth
- 01:37:41and and this is where we are today so i
- 01:37:44wish i could
- 01:37:45i wish i could give you five steps do
- 01:37:47this and this and this and this right
- 01:37:49but this was just pure and utter the
- 01:37:51gods were saying this is required and
- 01:37:53they were using me as a vehicle and i
- 01:37:55allowed myself to be used
- 01:37:56and that's how it happened should you
- 01:37:58write a book
- 01:37:59absolutely you know why because there's
- 01:38:02somebody
- 01:38:03some corner of the earth who needs what
- 01:38:05you're saying i'm telling you the amount
- 01:38:07of letters that i've gotten from
- 01:38:09executives and assistants
- 01:38:11from out of nowhere you've never could
- 01:38:13imagine who these people
- 01:38:15even are writing to me and saying
- 01:38:18your book is my bible or writing
- 01:38:20executives writing to me and saying your
- 01:38:22book has saved me
- 01:38:2310 years of wasted time because i know
- 01:38:26exactly what to look for now
- 01:38:28you know i didn't write this book to be
- 01:38:30of server so anything it was something i
- 01:38:32needed to get out i
- 01:38:33you know people were pushing me i did it
- 01:38:35and i could
- 01:38:36never have known the the tremendous
- 01:38:40service that this book
- 01:38:41and and and the position of of being of
- 01:38:44servers that it has put me in
- 01:38:46today because i never thought of myself
- 01:38:48like that you know
- 01:38:49that i wasn't trying to be of service i
- 01:38:52mean i love to help i love to whatever i
- 01:38:54can
- 01:38:54but it wasn't my intention to do that i
- 01:38:57was writing a book to share
- 01:38:58what i knew but all of a sudden now i'm
- 01:39:00in the position of people
- 01:39:02really asking me to help them and guide
- 01:39:05them
- 01:39:06from all over the world people who
- 01:39:08barely even speak english and i sure as
- 01:39:09heck don't speak their language you know
- 01:39:11who who are reading my book
- 01:39:14so write write the book because somebody
- 01:39:16somewhere
- 01:39:17needs what you're sharing don't hesitate
- 01:39:19to do it
- 01:39:21that's beautiful that that's a really
- 01:39:23wonderful story thanks for
- 01:39:24for sharing that and it it just confirms
- 01:39:27what i already knew which is there
- 01:39:28really is a story behind every book
- 01:39:30you know and that that story is often as
- 01:39:33remarkable as the book itself and
- 01:39:36and as one who's read your book you know
- 01:39:38i asser affirm
- 01:39:39that you know it's a really great book
- 01:39:41and there's there's a lot of value in it
- 01:39:43i mean again it's for a specific reader
- 01:39:46but that's part of what makes it great
- 01:39:47is you know who you're writing to
- 01:39:48and where they are and you know what
- 01:39:50they need and your book
- 01:39:52really checks that box quite well so
- 01:39:54thank you
