  • 00:00:05
hi there my name is Milly and thank you
  • 00:00:08
so much for joining me today for
  • 00:00:09
storytime um I am going to read a very
  • 00:00:12
personal book to you today and it's
  • 00:00:15
called drawn together illustrated by the
  • 00:00:18
amazing dance Santa who is a good friend
  • 00:00:21
and also one of my favorite author
  • 00:00:23
illustrators back to have one of his
  • 00:00:26
books The Adventures of meikle on my
  • 00:00:28
office wall um but this book is very
  • 00:00:31
personal to me because it is inspired by
  • 00:00:34
my relationship with my own grandparents
  • 00:00:36
I'm given he's American so I was born
  • 00:00:39
here in the United States but my
  • 00:00:41
families are bridging from Vietnam and
  • 00:00:42
    my grandparents spoke mostly in
  • 00:00:44
Vietnamese um while I spoke most English
  • 00:00:46
whenever I go to the house I love them
  • 00:00:48
so much they love me so much but like I
  • 00:00:50
still had trouble of talking to them
  • 00:00:51
communicating with them I'm not sure if
  • 00:00:53
you have the same experience with anyone
  • 00:00:55
in your family but so I want to write a
  • 00:00:57
book that kind of captured both the the
  • 00:01:01
depth of love and emotion there but also
  • 00:01:04
talked about like the struggles that can
  • 00:01:05
come with with these relationships so
  • 00:01:09
what I didn't realize is Dan who is Thai
  • 00:01:11
American had a similar relation with his
  • 00:01:13
    grandmother who spoke on having
  • 00:01:15
exclusively tied and so they had a
  • 00:01:18
similar communication gap so it's a very
  • 00:01:21
personal book to both of us so much so
  • 00:01:24
that if you look at the dedication page
  • 00:01:26
you'll see we dedicates our grandparents
  • 00:01:29
there's my grandfather right there and
  • 00:01:31
    there's Dan's grandmother
  • 00:01:35
shall we begin are you ready here we go
  • 00:01:39
come together by me illustrate by Dan
  • 00:01:43
Santa and you'll see this his lovely
  • 00:01:46
gold sticker on the front because we
  • 00:01:49
were fortunate enough to receive the
  • 00:01:50
    asian-pacific American Library
  • 00:01:53
Association Award for for best picture
  • 00:01:54
book of last year so I'm very honored by
  • 00:01:58
that so our book begins with this boy
  • 00:02:00
who's being dropped off by his mom
  • 00:02:06
he knows I've been ringing the doorbell
  • 00:02:08
and his grandfather answers the door and
  • 00:02:13
he you can tell his grandfather super
  • 00:02:15
excited to see him sell my grandson's
  • 00:02:17
here so they greet each other with this
  • 00:02:20
    traditional Thai greeting and the
  • 00:02:23
    grandfather waves goodbye to his
  • 00:02:24
daughter and then the grand fireless the
  • 00:02:26
boy come inside and look boys walks in
  • 00:02:29
and he's you know he's not so sure he's
  • 00:02:31
looking a little bit iffy about this but
  • 00:02:36
they go inside and sit down to eat and
  • 00:02:38
    the grandfather's made himself this
  • 00:02:39
    beautiful bowl of noodle soup
  • 00:02:41
but because he loves his grandson he
  • 00:02:44
wants him to be happy he makes him a hot
  • 00:02:46
dog and french fries and because he's a
  • 00:02:49
good grandfather he also adds a little
  • 00:02:51
side salad to make sure that he gets his
  • 00:02:52
vegetables but they sat down to eat and
  • 00:02:56
the grandson asks so what's new grandpa
  • 00:03:02
and the grandfather responds to the
  • 00:03:04
question and tie but unfortunately they
  • 00:03:07
can't understand each other so that's as
  • 00:03:09
far as they can go and a quick note for
  • 00:03:12
those of you who are reading along at
  • 00:03:14
home on this page you'll see right above
  • 00:03:18
the mom's car are the translations for
  • 00:03:21
all the the type text so the grandfather
  • 00:03:24
here is actually saying how are you
  • 00:03:26
doing so the boy saying huh what's new
  • 00:03:29
grandpa and grab for saying how are you
  • 00:03:31
doing they're so close they're trying to
  • 00:03:32
have a conversation but that's as far as
  • 00:03:34
they can get so they continue eating so
  • 00:03:39
afterwards they sit down and they watch
  • 00:03:41
a movie and it looks super exciting
  • 00:03:43
right there's a guy in the corner
  • 00:03:45
shouting sexy shining dragon but the
  • 00:03:49
green flowers watching his grandson to
  • 00:03:51
see how he's how he's doing and he asked
  • 00:03:55
a question in Thai which is and the boy
  • 00:03:57
asks can we watch something else
  • 00:03:59
so here the grandfather is actually
  • 00:04:02
asking would you like to watch something
  • 00:04:04
else so again they're right there
  • 00:04:05
they're so close but they they're not
  • 00:04:08
able to communicate any further so they
  • 00:04:11
keep watching the movie in silence
  • 00:04:17
so eventually the boy gets tired he's
  • 00:04:19
like you know what I can't follow along
  • 00:04:21
I'm gonna go do something else he goes
  • 00:04:23
to his bag he pulls out some paper some
  • 00:04:26
colored pencils and pens and the
  • 00:04:28
grandfather walks over peek so very
  • 00:04:31
shoulder and to see what his grandson is
  • 00:04:34
doing and he sees that his grandson is
  • 00:04:36
drawing a picture of himself as a wizard
  • 00:04:38
my grandfather gets super excited by
  • 00:04:40
this so the grandfather goes off to the
  • 00:04:47
other room and he comes back with his
  • 00:04:50
own sketch bed and some paint brushes
  • 00:04:52
and some ink and now we hear the boy
  • 00:04:54
thinking I knew things right when I gave
  • 00:04:57
up on talking my grandfather surprised
  • 00:05:00
me by revealing a world beyond words and
  • 00:05:03
then a flash we see each other for the
  • 00:05:09
first time and here you'll see the boy
  • 00:05:11
as his wizard character and on the other
  • 00:05:13
side let's see if the grandfather has
  • 00:05:15
paint a picture of himself as one of the
  • 00:05:17
heroes from his childhood you see he has
  • 00:05:20
his amazing staff that's also a brush
  • 00:05:25
now all the things we could never say
  • 00:05:28
come pouring out it's a pen son the
  • 00:05:31
    grandfather there creating all this
  • 00:05:34
including this just funny little monkey
  • 00:05:37
so all the things we could never say
  • 00:05:39
come pouring out and we build a new
  • 00:05:44
world that even though words can't
  • 00:05:45
describe you'll see down here in the
  • 00:05:47
corner the grandson and the grandfather
  • 00:05:49
is standing there surveying this amazing
  • 00:05:51
    world that they've created together
  • 00:05:56
but just when we're closer than ever so
  • 00:06:00
something's starting to happen just from
  • 00:06:03
poster than ever that old distance so
  • 00:06:08
the ground splits apart let's see the
  • 00:06:10
grand so I'm on way on the side but the
  • 00:06:12
next two grandfathers brush and way on
  • 00:06:15
the other side is a grandfather sitting
  • 00:06:17
next to the boys magic wand so that old
  • 00:06:20
distance comes roaring back you'll see
  • 00:06:24
this dragon comes screaming out of the
  • 00:06:26
ground so the grandfather guys voice is
  • 00:06:34
wand made point at the dragon and the
  • 00:06:36
boy grabs her grandfather staff and then
  • 00:06:39
the faces off against the dragon it says
  • 00:06:40
this time I'm not afraid because I know
  • 00:06:47
that together we can make our way across
  • 00:06:53
if you look closely the dragon just
  • 00:06:56
    didn't disappear the grandfather and
  • 00:06:57
grandson faced off against it and they
  • 00:06:59
transformed it into this bridge so
  • 00:07:01
instead of letting it keep them apart
  • 00:07:03
    they transformed there's something that
  • 00:07:05
will bring them together so now after
  • 00:07:08
years of searching for the right words
  • 00:07:10
we find ourselves happily speechless and
  • 00:07:15
now we're back in the world in the
  • 00:07:17
    grandfather's home you can see
  • 00:07:19
grandfather grandson are hugging and on
  • 00:07:20
the back wall as you can see that entire
  • 00:07:22
adventure that whole world that we were
  • 00:07:24
just a part of was actually taking place
  • 00:07:26
in the artwork that the grandfather and
  • 00:07:28
grandson were making together and then
  • 00:07:33
it's time to go home the mom comes back
  • 00:07:35
and she is so excited because her father
  • 00:07:39
and her son family found that connected
  • 00:07:41
finally found that common ground so the
  • 00:07:43
mom and grandfather hug and as they
  • 00:07:46
waved goodbye as they say goodbye
  • 00:07:48
they'll see that the boy is holding one
  • 00:07:51
    of their grandfather's paintbrushes and
  • 00:07:52
the grandfather is holding one of the
  • 00:07:54
boys markers so now they've made that
  • 00:07:55
    connection that's something they're
  • 00:07:57
going to continue to build upon so
  • 00:07:59
    grandfather waves goodbye with future
  • 00:08:02
    adventures awaiting
  • 00:08:05
down the road and that is drawn together
  • 00:08:08
I hope you enjoyed our book like I said
  • 00:08:12
it comes from a very personal place my
  • 00:08:15
    my grandfather unfortunately passed away
  • 00:08:16
before I was able to share this book
  • 00:08:18
with him but I'm confident he knew how I
  • 00:08:20
felt about about our relationship um
  • 00:08:22
that being said for you all out there
  • 00:08:25
listening if there are people in your
  • 00:08:26
life that you do you haven't talked to
  • 00:08:28
in a while or you're kind of like
  • 00:08:29
struggling to figure out how to
  • 00:08:30
communicate with I'm telling you there's
  • 00:08:34
no time like the present to to reach out
  • 00:08:36
and just let them know how you feel tell
  • 00:08:38
them that you love them I hope you
  • 00:08:39
enjoyed storytime hopefully I'll be able
  • 00:08:41
to share some more stories with you in
  • 00:08:43
the future until then have a great day
  • 00:08:46
bye I almost forgot something there is a
  • 00:08:51
secret in this book I want to share with
  • 00:08:55
    you
  • 00:08:56
so if you take this book and you take
  • 00:08:59
the cover off the jacket um you take it
  • 00:09:04
off you'll see that underneath is this
  • 00:09:08
    sketchbook
  • 00:09:09
I may look familiar to you on the scene
  • 00:09:12
where the grandfather runs off the other
  • 00:09:15
room and comes back with with his
  • 00:09:17
    sketchbook
  • 00:09:17
    so that's a that's a nice detail that
  • 00:09:20
Dan and our editor wrote em maskavich
  • 00:09:22
and the art director Joanne he'll added
  • 00:09:24
I think it makes the story of really
  • 00:09:26
special so I really want to make sure to
  • 00:09:27
share that with you and now by for real
