00:00:00
these are four goals that I want us all
00:00:02
to consider to stop chasing as we
00:00:04
approach 50 years old in order to enjoy
00:00:08
our journey the time that we have left
00:00:11
even more and the first one is to stop
00:00:14
chasing career advancement and to really
00:00:17
focus on the joy and the purpose of our
00:00:20
career in what we're doing you know in
00:00:23
your 20s if you can get a promotion
00:00:26
early and and to get uh a $10,000 year
00:00:29
raise a $20,000 a year raise that is
00:00:33
going to compound over a 30 40y year
00:00:36
career but as we're in our 50s is it
00:00:39
really going to move the needle that
00:00:41
much and would it be better and I'm
00:00:43
suggesting that it would be would it be
00:00:46
better to focus instead on enjoying our
00:00:48
career enjoying the things that we're
00:00:51
doing at at work enjoying helping to
00:00:54
build a team and helping to Mentor other
00:00:56
folks and and to make the organization
00:00:59
as strong as it can be without focusing
00:01:02
on you know what's in it for me now it's
00:01:05
just human nature that we're going to be
00:01:07
thinking about it but part of it too is
00:01:09
just accepting where we are in life that
00:01:13
we've likely gotten most of the
00:01:15
promotions that we're going to get out
00:01:17
of our life and the time we would have
00:01:19
to put in to make ourselves a viable
00:01:22
candidate for that next level you know
00:01:25
often times that means working 60 70 80
00:01:28
hours a week and that's great when
00:01:30
you're in your 20s but when you're in
00:01:32
your 50s think about what that extra 20
00:01:35
hours a week is taking away it's taking
00:01:37
away time time from your family it's
00:01:40
taking away time to take care of your
00:01:42
health it's taking away time for
00:01:44
adventures and
00:01:46
experiences and our time becomes more
00:01:50
valuable than the incremental money that
00:01:53
we can make so at some point it becomes
00:01:56
so much so our time becomes so valuable
00:01:59
that eventually retire and we say that
00:02:01
it's not worth the money that we're
00:02:03
getting to give up to to sacrifice what
00:02:07
we need to to to to sacrifice in order
00:02:10
to keep the job but in your 50s you're
00:02:12
likely still not there yet where you're
00:02:15
ready to retire but one of the ways to
00:02:17
kind of ease into it is you know instead
00:02:20
of working 50 60 70 hours a week could
00:02:23
you work 40 to 50 hours a week and still
00:02:26
do a really good job at job in your
00:02:30
career and for your company and still be
00:02:32
a valuable member of the team because
00:02:35
often times what drives us to to put in
00:02:39
those extra hours is we want to be the
00:02:42
best right we want to be the candidate
00:02:45
for the next promotion but giving
00:02:47
yourself permission to get off to to to
00:02:51
step out of that rat race and say it's
00:02:54
more about enjoying the entire Journey
00:02:57
as opposed to optimizing on this one
00:02:59
piece P that can steal a lot from us
00:03:02
outside of work yes it's rewarding yes
00:03:05
it's nice to get those accolades at work
00:03:08
yes it's it's nice to be given the the
00:03:11
the assignments that everybody's excited
00:03:13
about and maybe something has some
00:03:15
international travel that you'd like to
00:03:17
do and yes it's nice to get the the
00:03:20
monetary benefits from it but you know
00:03:22
what there's other things in life that
00:03:24
are also nice to have so optimizing on
00:03:27
life as opposed to optimizing on the
00:03:29
title in optimizing on the paycheck I'm
00:03:33
encouraging you to optimize on life and
00:03:35
at some point stop chasing the career
00:03:38
advancement okay number
00:03:41
two is to stop you know bigger is better
00:03:45
I live here in the United States and
00:03:47
it's uh you know he with the most toys
00:03:50
wins right and and better faster bigger
00:03:54
cheaper and and bigger as as we get
00:03:57
older at least in my case and I've been
00:03:59
a financial adviser for over 20 years in
00:04:02
many of my clients cases you know having
00:04:04
that bigger home what that represents is
00:04:07
just more work more things to go wrong
00:04:10
with your house more things that need
00:04:12
maintenance more things that need to be
00:04:14
cleaned um and the question is you know
00:04:18
do you own your house or does your house
00:04:20
own you and so at least in my case when
00:04:23
the kids left for college I was in a
00:04:25
fairly large house in the the town I was
00:04:28
in and I just wanted to to simplify I
00:04:31
wanted a smaller house I wanted less
00:04:33
maintenance I bought another house that
00:04:35
was onethird of the size and the
00:04:38
organization the HOA takes care of all
00:04:41
the maintenance on the outside and you
00:04:43
know what I do not miss shoveling snow
00:04:46
and I don't miss finding a contractor to
00:04:48
get the house painted every three or
00:04:50
four years and I don't miss you know
00:04:52
calling uh when different maintenance
00:04:55
things need to be done there's just life
00:04:57
is simpler and and so the bigger house I
00:05:01
think that's one of the things that we
00:05:02
can all quit pursuing particularly when
00:05:05
we move you know that tends to be the
00:05:07
time that we're tempted you know we're
00:05:09
moving anyways we've got to pack up
00:05:11
everything we move to the new town and
00:05:14
we just kind of get this this square
00:05:17
footage uh creep that takes place the
00:05:20
realtor shows us different houses and oh
00:05:23
that's nice it has an entertainment room
00:05:25
and oh that's nice it has an extra
00:05:27
bedroom that we could use as an office
00:05:29
or or as a weight room whatever it is
00:05:32
but at some time at some point you know
00:05:35
what it's just nice to go to the health
00:05:36
club and and let them worry about
00:05:39
maintaining things and things like that
00:05:41
so that's the second one the third one
00:05:44
is just more stop pursuing stuff it's
00:05:48
not the stuff that gives us the
00:05:50
happiness and I'm going to talk about
00:05:52
what in my in my experience both as an
00:05:55
individual as well as a financial
00:05:57
adviser what does give us the happiness
00:05:59
but it's typically not more stuff right
00:06:03
it's it's it's not having you know a
00:06:05
fourth car when there's only two people
00:06:07
in the family it's it's not having 50
00:06:11
pairs of shoes uh instead of 20 pairs of
00:06:13
shoes it's it's not the stuff we all
00:06:16
have these cardboard boxes showing up at
00:06:19
our house week after week after week and
00:06:22
I know people that don't even open the
00:06:24
cardboard boxes they just have so much
00:06:27
stuff and is is the stuff bringing you
00:06:29
Joy if it is bringing you Joy great you
00:06:33
be you but I just if it's not I just
00:06:36
want to put some things on a Raider
00:06:37
screen that that I've seen I have an
00:06:39
interesting vantage point I'm very uh
00:06:42
fortunate to work with people most of us
00:06:45
live our own lives and and that's how we
00:06:47
learn our lessons I've been fortunate in
00:06:50
my job to be able to walk alongside my
00:06:52
clients over 10 20 30 years and and see
00:06:57
their experiences uh been a financial
00:07:00
adviser for two decades of that and I
00:07:02
just have friends that for 30 years I've
00:07:05
been walking alongside them and these
00:07:06
are some of the things that I've learned
00:07:08
and maybe one of the most important
00:07:10
things is to stop comparing ourselves to
00:07:14
other people and that is one of the
00:07:17
things that's giving me an immense
00:07:19
amount of freedom in my life is when I
00:07:21
stopped comparing myself and saying am I
00:07:24
doing as well as you know one of my high
00:07:26
school classmates or one of my college
00:07:28
classmates or are one of my business
00:07:30
school classmates am I doing as well as
00:07:32
them and you know it's very liberating
00:07:35
it's very freeing to say you know what
00:07:37
there's n billion people in the world I
00:07:41
just need to make sure that I'm building
00:07:43
my life as opposed to comparing myself
00:07:45
to other people and for me that's been
00:07:47
very liberating so what have I seen
00:07:50
people do that have brought them Joy um
00:07:52
it's it's it's really people focusing on
00:07:55
their purpose you know what are their
00:07:57
Hobbies what are whether it's a a hobby
00:08:00
or volunteering what are the things that
00:08:02
really bring them Joy either in work
00:08:04
outside of work with the family it's
00:08:07
it's focusing on
00:08:08
relationships your maybe your elderly
00:08:11
parents maybe your younger kids it's
00:08:13
really thinking about how much more time
00:08:15
do I have with them how many more
00:08:17
Summers do I have with them how many
00:08:19
more holidays do I get to celebrate with
00:08:21
them and really making the most of each
00:08:24
of those times that we do get to to be
00:08:27
together and then for me it's a I I love
00:08:29
it Adventures right so it's about
00:08:31
relationships it's about Adventures for
00:08:33
me I like to travel there's no shortage
00:08:36
of Adventures the way I travel I like to
00:08:38
take public transportation when I'm in
00:08:40
the country I like to live like a local
00:08:44
in a foreign country and that opens the
00:08:46
door for me for a lot of adventurers
00:08:49
sometimes they can be a little scary in
00:08:51
the moment but you look back at them you
00:08:53
say wow that was really interesting it
00:08:55
opens some doors to some things that
00:08:57
that I wouldn't have thought about so
00:09:00
for me the key word is is is moments
00:09:03
creating moments whether that's an
00:09:04
adventure whether it's moments with
00:09:06
people that I love friends things like
00:09:09
that
00:09:10
adventures and and just creating these
00:09:13
These Memories that that you know
00:09:15
hopefully when my day comes where I'm
00:09:18
looking back at my life I look at those
00:09:20
and those are the things that I cherish
00:09:23
and speaking of cherishing things one of
00:09:25
the things that I found as a financial
00:09:27
adviser is people really cherish their
00:09:30
time once they get through the
00:09:32
transition of retirement the thought of
00:09:35
retiring both financially and and just
00:09:38
mentally can be scary and that's why I
00:09:40
made this video here why retiring at 65
00:09:44
might be a big mistake join me in that
00:09:46
video and thanks for watching this one
00:09:48
bye-bye
