- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
In the Book of Jonah, God commands Jonah to go to Nineveh and preach against its wickedness, but Jonah flees to Tarshish instead. This beginning sets the stage for exploring Jonah's character and the broader implications of the story, especially how we often know the story through children's versions that simplify complex themes.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The speaker notes that familiarity with Jonah's story often stems from children's media, notably the exaggerated portrayal of Jonah in a fish. This simplifies the original narrative, missing crucial elements about God's character and the story's deeper meaning, which is not primarily about a fish but about God's nature and intentions for humanity.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The Book of Jonah is described as a brilliantly told story, rich in wit, irony, and humor. Jonah is portrayed as a flawed character, symbolizing the shortcomings of God's people, particularly their pride and inability to embody God's mercy, which underlines the story's critique of religious attitudes.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
The well-known trope of chasing a villain in movies is likened to how readers may initially perceive the Book of Jonah. Readers might find the story amusing and absurd until they realize that the narrative serves as a reflection on their own thoughts and behaviors, highlighting the difficult truths about pride and resistance to divine grace.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The sermon emphasizes the importance of recognizing the literary style of the Book of Jonah as distinct, noting that while other prophetic books offer straightforward prophecies, Jonah's narrative challenges the reader's expectations by presenting a comic-like tale aimed at revealing deeper truths about God's character and our responses to Him.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
The speaker explains that Jonah's character is intentionally flawed, representing the worst tendencies of God's people. His reluctance to go to Nineveh reveals a deeper conflict within him, showcasing a struggle not just against tasks but against God's nature of mercy toward the undeserving, which is a theme present throughout the story.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The text highlights Jonah's flight as a symbolic action that exposes the psychological complexities of disobedience. Jonah's decision to flee is rooted not in fear for his life but in a fear of God's mercy, and it questions our understanding of obedience and the nature of God's call on our lives.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The speaker introduces the idea of competing visions of life; God's call challenges our personal aspirations and the definitions of a good life. Obedience, therefore, is redefined not as submission to a despot but as alignment with God's greater story, which invites participation in His grace and mission.
- 00:40:00 - 00:49:34
The parallels between Jonah's story and modern-day issues are drawn, suggesting that individuals often resist God's call because it doesn't align with their vision of life. The pastor emphasizes that true life is found in embracing God's invitation, which may require letting go of personal agendas and engaging in the challenging work of grace and mercy.

Awal Mula Munculnya Agama NASRANI Dan YAHUDI #Part 1 | Ust Khalid Basalamah
- 00:00:02John chapter 1 verses 1 to 3 the word of
- 00:00:07the Lord came to Jonah son of Amitai go
- 00:00:11to the great city of Nineveh and preach
- 00:00:13against it because its wickedness has
- 00:00:16come up before me but Jonah ran away
- 00:00:19from the Lord and headed for Tarshish he
- 00:00:23went down to Joppa where he found a ship
- 00:00:26bound for that port after paying the
- 00:00:29fare
- 00:00:30he went aboard and sailed for Tarsus to
- 00:00:32flee from the Lord all right guys ready
- 00:00:46for action so great I've waited years to
- 00:00:50do a series on Jonah how many of you are
- 00:00:53familiar with the story of Jonah show of
- 00:00:55hands here I think it's important how
- 00:00:56many smelly so the vast majority of us
- 00:00:59are familiar with the story of Jonah and
- 00:01:03this is a problem I think that's
- 00:01:06actually a huge problem and one that
- 00:01:08we're going to have to overcome here in
- 00:01:09the next five weeks and it's a problem
- 00:01:11because if I would have asked a question
- 00:01:13how many of you have thoughtfully read
- 00:01:15through the Book of Jonah in its
- 00:01:18entirety maybe even more than once maybe
- 00:01:20even like read a Study Bible or
- 00:01:22something like that comment on it and
- 00:01:24learned about the Book of Jonah and I
- 00:01:25did I'm not going to ask that question
- 00:01:26it's okay so but if I did ask that
- 00:01:28question far far fewer hands would have
- 00:01:31raised so I'm guessing actually many of
- 00:01:33us have probably never actually
- 00:01:35thoroughly or thoughtfully read through
- 00:01:37the book but you know about it because
- 00:01:39of what yeah exactly right so I call
- 00:01:44this the veggie tail sector okay you
- 00:01:46notice and the veggie tales factor and
- 00:01:49so honestly when I said The Book of
- 00:01:52Jonah what came in to many of your minds
- 00:01:55was the talking cucumber you know having
- 00:01:57the talking tomato or whatever and and
- 00:01:59this this is a this is a challenge and a
- 00:02:02problematic just in general with
- 00:02:04especially in the Old Testament the
- 00:02:06stories of the Bible because most of us
- 00:02:09if we have encountered the stories of
- 00:02:11the Old Testament at all its have not
- 00:02:13been through thoughtful reading of them
- 00:02:16they've been mediated to us through
- 00:02:18children's media and what happens in
- 00:02:21children's media is that most of these
- 00:02:23stories they get they get watered down
- 00:02:25or they're simplified and somehow they
- 00:02:28all of a sudden teach a bland moral
- 00:02:31truth like be nice or something be a
- 00:02:34nice person you know suddenly every
- 00:02:35story in the Bible is about that and so
- 00:02:38and especially Jonah holy cow
- 00:02:40for Jonah it's a no-brainer there is one
- 00:02:43element of this story that every every
- 00:02:46children's book 6/8 on and what element
- 00:02:49is that Jonah endless come on the fish
- 00:02:53come on you know this so just random
- 00:02:55sampling of book covers rent from from
- 00:02:57amazon.com and so whether it's the 3d
- 00:03:00version right with the little glasses
- 00:03:02over here whether it's the sticker book
- 00:03:04version right here I mean just look at
- 00:03:07it there you go
- 00:03:08what's the Book of Jonah about it's
- 00:03:10about a guy in a fish there you go
- 00:03:13that's that's the VeggieTales factor
- 00:03:15that we have at work with us and so you
- 00:03:18guys the fish appears in two sentences
- 00:03:21in this entire story except the fish is
- 00:03:24not the thing the fish is not the thing
- 00:03:26to make the fish the focus or the main
- 00:03:29theme is to actually miss what this
- 00:03:31story is really what the story is really
- 00:03:33about so the Book of Jonah is a part of
- 00:03:36the sacred scriptures and the purpose of
- 00:03:39the scriptures is not to entertain
- 00:03:41children the purpose of the scriptures
- 00:03:43is not to teach us about fish the
- 00:03:45scriptures purpose is to reveal the
- 00:03:48character of God it's to reveal Jesus to
- 00:03:51us and his character and his purposes
- 00:03:54and what he's up to in the world that's
- 00:03:56what every book of the Bible is for to
- 00:03:58reveal God and reveal Jesus and his
- 00:04:01character and his purposes to us and so
- 00:04:04whatever the Book of Jonah is about it's
- 00:04:06doing that and whatever I think the Book
- 00:04:09of Jonah is about that distracts from
- 00:04:10that I'm probably like way on the wrong
- 00:04:12track and need to get back it's the
- 00:04:14VeggieTales factor and so the fact is
- 00:04:17the Book of Jonah especially is I mean
- 00:04:20it's great children's story but to
- 00:04:22actually get what's going on in this
- 00:04:24book you have to be an adult absolutely
- 00:04:27The Book of Jonah is one of the most
- 00:04:29brilliantly told stories in the entire
- 00:04:33Bible was full of wit and irony and
- 00:04:36humor there's humor in the Bible really
- 00:04:39history and sarcasm and what the book
- 00:04:42was really doing Jonah as we're going to
- 00:04:44see he's a representative character in
- 00:04:47the story he represents the Covenant
- 00:04:48people of God through whom God wants to
- 00:04:51do his work in the world and what this
- 00:04:53book does is it by exposing Jonah is a
- 00:04:56horrible man by the way do you know this
- 00:04:58he's a horrible person every chapter of
- 00:05:00the book just exposes what a horrible
- 00:05:03flawed person he is and by by holding
- 00:05:05him up for for ridicule for shame for
- 00:05:09critique with the was what the story
- 00:05:12Tower is really doing how many of you
- 00:05:14have seen this kind of a stock seen in
- 00:05:16many like spy action movies where like
- 00:05:17this dark alley or a warehouse the good
- 00:05:20guys chasing the bad guy and now all of
- 00:05:22a sudden the good guy sees the red laser
- 00:05:25beam sight on his chest you know I'm
- 00:05:28saying you know that scene you could
- 00:05:29name ten movies that have that same in
- 00:05:31it right now so that's the Book of Jonah
- 00:05:33because you're reading a store and
- 00:05:34you're like wow this is crazy in this
- 00:05:36guy's crazy a fish and whoa this and
- 00:05:38then all of a sudden if you're paying
- 00:05:40attention you realize like yeah this is
- 00:05:45about me like this whole story is aimed
- 00:05:48at punching me in the gut right now and
- 00:05:51it's the story is aimed at exposing the
- 00:05:54worst tendencies that tend to form in
- 00:05:58size of God's covenant people which
- 00:06:01which is pride hard-heartedness
- 00:06:04judgmentalism tribalism small-mindedness
- 00:06:07and an inability to grow and change and
- 00:06:11let god's grace actually surprised me
- 00:06:14and explode the boundaries of what I
- 00:06:16thought was possible in the world that's
- 00:06:18what the story's about and so it's one
- 00:06:21of the things where you know you think
- 00:06:22you're just reading this kind of
- 00:06:23harmless tale or something and then you
- 00:06:25realize someone's talking you in the gut
- 00:06:27that's that's the Book of Jonah and so
- 00:06:30surgeon general's warning you know this
- 00:06:31is probably going to hurt five Sundays
- 00:06:33in a row it's going to hurt but you're
- 00:06:34kind of used to that around or foe I
- 00:06:36think that's kind of why a lot of you
- 00:06:38are here is because you like the pain
- 00:06:40you like the fact okay
- 00:06:42so no how else does
- 00:06:43so think of think of these five weeks
- 00:06:46it's kind of like a rescue mission we're
- 00:06:49going to rescue the Book of Jonah from
- 00:06:50all of the layers of vegetation that
- 00:06:54have grown over it we're going to pull
- 00:06:56it out and try and understand what the
- 00:06:57story is really saying it's profound
- 00:07:00revelation of the character and purposes
- 00:07:02God yes with me all right so you're
- 00:07:06already open here and specifically today
- 00:07:08so reading any book of the Bible
- 00:07:11especially the Book of Jonah we're kind
- 00:07:12of its kind of like I'm watching
- 00:07:13afternoon soap operas when you have not
- 00:07:15been watching beforehand and you're like
- 00:07:17who are these people and why do I care
- 00:07:19about this and there's clearly all these
- 00:07:21stories that have already been going you
- 00:07:22know what I'm saying
- 00:07:23here some beer ashamed to even admit
- 00:07:25that you would watch so proper stuff so
- 00:07:27anyway so that's kind of will be what's
- 00:07:29that what's going on as we dive into
- 00:07:30Jonah there's all these backstories that
- 00:07:32you're just supposed to know the in-form
- 00:07:35and help you grasp what the author is
- 00:07:37trying to do to you he's trying to mess
- 00:07:39with you here but you need to grasp the
- 00:07:41backstories and so we're camping out in
- 00:07:43the first three verses this week to set
- 00:07:45the playing field and so we can pick up
- 00:07:48and just run in those in the Sundays
- 00:07:50that follow so verse one let's go for it
- 00:07:54lightning speed the word of the Lord
- 00:07:58came to Jonah son of ami time okay let's
- 00:08:02stop Sabri there's two things we got to
- 00:08:06pay attention to here first of all the
- 00:08:08author just landed big a big ball a easy
- 00:08:13ball slow ball on a soft ball underhand
- 00:08:17I don't know I'm trying to say he's mate
- 00:08:19he's like surrounding us a bone
- 00:08:20different metaphor altogether talking
- 00:08:21about with this uh with these first
- 00:08:24sentences here with this person what's
- 00:08:26that what kind of book in my reading
- 00:08:27rent we just opened up the Book of Jonah
- 00:08:28what kind of book will be reading the
- 00:08:31first clue right there so the word of
- 00:08:35the Lord comes to what kinds of people
- 00:08:37in the Bible especially in Israel comes
- 00:08:40with prophets
- 00:08:40it's a prophet so apparently this is a
- 00:08:43book of and in the Bible prophet doesn't
- 00:08:46mean fortune teller or something like
- 00:08:47that the prophets sometimes look into
- 00:08:51the future and discern what God's will
- 00:08:53be doing in line with his character and
- 00:08:55so on but for the
- 00:08:56most part the most basic definition and
- 00:08:58role of prophets in the Bible is to
- 00:09:00speak on God's behalf their just
- 00:09:01messengers to speak on God's behalf give
- 00:09:04God's perspective on something and
- 00:09:05that's what a prophet is in the Bible
- 00:09:07and so the word of the Lord comes to
- 00:09:10prophets that kind of turn the page to
- 00:09:12the next book of the Bible it'll just be
- 00:09:14one page for most of you this is another
- 00:09:17book of the prophet Micah and how does
- 00:09:19it begin
- 00:09:22well begins the exact same way the word
- 00:09:25of the Lord that came to Micah of
- 00:09:27Moorish chefs during the reigns of all
- 00:09:29these kings of thumb causes Keauhou
- 00:09:31kings of Judah the vision you saw
- 00:09:33concerning Samaria and Judah now here's
- 00:09:36what's interesting here's what follows
- 00:09:37what follows in Micah is seven chapters
- 00:09:40that are a collection of Micah's words
- 00:09:42of his poetry his poetic prophesy to
- 00:09:46Israel and so and this is how all the
- 00:09:49books of the prophets begin you realize
- 00:09:51they are Obadiah Ezekiel or Zechariah
- 00:09:54and they all begin with the words of
- 00:09:56this prophet or the word of the Lord
- 00:09:57came to or the vision of that came from
- 00:10:00God that so in Isaiah saw this is how
- 00:10:02all the books of the prophets begin and
- 00:10:04so we turn back to the Book of Jonah and
- 00:10:07we read the first sentence and we say oh
- 00:10:08the word of the Lord came to Jonah son
- 00:10:11of armeteo I know what kind of book I'm
- 00:10:13about to start reading it's a book of
- 00:10:15prophecy in am i right I'm wrong I'm not
- 00:10:20the first tented throws you off
- 00:10:22everything is wonky in this book and
- 00:10:24that's precisely the point the first
- 00:10:26sentence throws you off because you
- 00:10:27think you're about ready to read a
- 00:10:29collection of Jonah's poetic prophecy
- 00:10:32like every other book of the prophets
- 00:10:33but that's not what you get what you get
- 00:10:35is a story about this prophet
- 00:10:38I just want you to stop and think about
- 00:10:40that God's God's Word takes many
- 00:10:43different forms in the scriptures
- 00:10:45sometimes God's Word to his people is
- 00:10:48speaking directly through the Prophet
- 00:10:50and through his words
- 00:10:52that's God's words to his people through
- 00:10:54Micah the Book of Jonah is God's Word to
- 00:10:58his people through a story about a
- 00:11:01prophet and so if you want to hear God's
- 00:11:04Word you have to read and reread and
- 00:11:08meditate and think about the message of
- 00:11:10this story not about a fish about the
- 00:11:13message of the whole story right
- 00:11:15including the chapter I've I have a
- 00:11:17child remote but I read to my son with
- 00:11:21with like grimace clenched teeth or
- 00:11:24something it's the story of Jonah and it
- 00:11:25completely leaves out chapter 4 it
- 00:11:27doesn't even mention the story that he
- 00:11:28gets angry at God and chefs war it's
- 00:11:31because well that's kind of a little
- 00:11:32inappropriate for kids get angry at God
- 00:11:34you know I think so no you got to read
- 00:11:36the whole thing and what is the message
- 00:11:38of this whole of this whole book and so
- 00:11:40what that raises is okay this is a story
- 00:11:43about a prophet what cut what kind of
- 00:11:45story is this and so the Bible is like a
- 00:11:49small library and there are many
- 00:11:51different books there are many different
- 00:11:54kinds of literature in these very
- 00:11:57different books there's different kinds
- 00:11:58of stories different kinds of narratives
- 00:12:00there's different kinds of poetry
- 00:12:01there's erotic love poetry the Song of
- 00:12:03Songs but then there's also prophetic
- 00:12:05poetry which is a different character
- 00:12:07there's you can read someone else's mail
- 00:12:08in the Bible the letters of the New
- 00:12:10Testament and there's different lots of
- 00:12:13narrative one-third of the bible is
- 00:12:14narrative another sort of it is poetry
- 00:12:16and you should not read all of those
- 00:12:19things the same way whenever you open up
- 00:12:20the Bible the first question you should
- 00:12:22ask is what kind of literature my
- 00:12:23reading right now and then how should
- 00:12:25that shape what I expect to get out of
- 00:12:28this and so that's a question we should
- 00:12:31ask is okay this is a story about a
- 00:12:33prophet but what kind of story is the
- 00:12:35author telling me like how can I honor
- 00:12:38God's Word and like let it dictate what
- 00:12:42kind of story this is to me and so
- 00:12:44others essentially I'm I have to go very
- 00:12:47quick here because I don't just want to
- 00:12:48give a lecture about The Book of Jonah
- 00:12:49but I think it's helpful because it's
- 00:12:51teaching us how to think and how to read
- 00:12:53the Bible more more intentionally
- 00:12:55there's there's two basic views on what
- 00:12:58kind of story the Book of Jonah is
- 00:13:00there's nothing else like Jonah in the
- 00:13:01Bible there's no other book about a
- 00:13:04prophet and not only that there's no
- 00:13:07other book that has this unique kind of
- 00:13:10storytelling style to it and so you know
- 00:13:14you read kind of teachers or
- 00:13:16commentators and this kind of thing
- 00:13:18across the whole spectrum but even even
- 00:13:20among Orthodox
- 00:13:21Christian scholars the Bible is God's
- 00:13:23Word Jesus God and human that whole deal
- 00:13:27so Orthodox Christian scholars there's
- 00:13:28two views you can come across them and
- 00:13:30all and all of the comment areas one is
- 00:13:32that the author has received a
- 00:13:34historical tradition about this guy
- 00:13:37named Jonah son of amitayus real
- 00:13:38historical figure and he's passing on to
- 00:13:41us this story as a historical account of
- 00:13:44the things that happened in the life of
- 00:13:46Jonah a brief revival in the city of
- 00:13:48Nineveh and so on
- 00:13:49so that's one one view and and very
- 00:13:53common recommend do I think probably
- 00:13:55most people haven't really even thought
- 00:13:56about it they might assume that the
- 00:13:59second view again also held by Orthodox
- 00:14:01Christian scholars is that there's
- 00:14:04something there's more than meets the
- 00:14:06eye to this book it's that the Jonah is
- 00:14:09a form of narrative parable and that
- 00:14:12this is a parable based off of a
- 00:14:14historical real figure because we're
- 00:14:15going to see here Jonah was a real
- 00:14:17figure based on history but that the
- 00:14:20author does not intend us to take the
- 00:14:22story as historical narrative but rather
- 00:14:24as parable similarly to the parable that
- 00:14:28Jesus told in Luke chapter 16 where he
- 00:14:31used a named character the rich man and
- 00:14:33Lazarus in that parable there's very
- 00:14:36clear it's a parable and it's the
- 00:14:37collection of parables and so on has all
- 00:14:39the features of Jesus's parable but
- 00:14:41Jesus used a named figure most likely a
- 00:14:43figure that would have been familiar to
- 00:14:45his hearers or so on a beggar named
- 00:14:47Lazarus but then puts that real
- 00:14:49character into the parable a parable
- 00:14:51type setting so those are the two main
- 00:14:53two mains views now this is like a
- 00:14:55lecture right now hey you guys done okay
- 00:14:58there's some of your board sorry sorry
- 00:15:01but most of you aren't and so I'm just
- 00:15:03going to keep going yeah so so here's
- 00:15:06the problem here's the problem here now
- 00:15:08let's be very honest what has happened
- 00:15:10for the most part in the last couple
- 00:15:11hundred years especially many church
- 00:15:12circles is because the fish is the main
- 00:15:16thing the choice between the two views
- 00:15:19all of a sudden becomes a litmus test on
- 00:15:22whether or not you really believe in
- 00:15:24miracles or whether or not you even
- 00:15:26believe a man could survive an officious
- 00:15:27done work for three days and if you take
- 00:15:29the view that the books a parable then
- 00:15:31you don't believe in the possibility of
- 00:15:32miracles you're sliding towards the
- 00:15:34logical liberalism and you're denying
- 00:15:36the tooth fulness of the Bible okay
- 00:15:38let's just stop stop that stop this is a
- 00:15:40wrong starting point altogether
- 00:15:42the fish is not the thing what I want to
- 00:15:45do is humble myself before God's Word
- 00:15:46not tell it what I think it ought to be
- 00:15:49but let the author tell me what kind of
- 00:15:53story he's writing and so and this is
- 00:15:56where the base comes in because Joan is
- 00:15:58a historical figure there's no doubt
- 00:16:00about that
- 00:16:01Jesus mentions Jonah and some people say
- 00:16:04well because Jesus mentioned Jonah and
- 00:16:06the people of Nineveh that's a claim
- 00:16:08that the book is historical if you go
- 00:16:12read those comments of Jesus in context
- 00:16:14though what he's not talking about what
- 00:16:17kind of book is or he's not appealing to
- 00:16:19the historicity of the Book of Jonah
- 00:16:20he's doing what he always does with the
- 00:16:23Old Testament says that these are
- 00:16:24stories and figures that point forward
- 00:16:26to me he says this the book Jonah in the
- 00:16:29whale is a symbol or a type of his
- 00:16:32coming death and burial yeah so Jesus's
- 00:16:36words don't resolve the issue for us you
- 00:16:39have to go to the Book of Jonah itself
- 00:16:41and so here's here's what's interesting
- 00:16:44is no matter what view you you hold a
- 00:16:46Book of Jonah is is unique in how it
- 00:16:48tells its story it doesn't give any
- 00:16:50dates other than Jonah
- 00:16:52it doesn't give you any name it name is
- 00:16:55one of the most important figures in the
- 00:16:57ancient world who's the king of Nineveh
- 00:16:58he's like the king of he's the
- 00:17:00equivalent of the US president in the
- 00:17:02world today he was the ruler of the
- 00:17:04biggest baddest Empire the ancient world
- 00:17:06has ever known and he has no name in the
- 00:17:09story which is very very curious usually
- 00:17:12when difficult or ease of David or
- 00:17:15Solomon or like the for biography
- 00:17:18biographies of Jesus in the New
- 00:17:20Testament they make the historical claim
- 00:17:22just out there they're telling you names
- 00:17:24and dates and other events going on in
- 00:17:26history and look everything everything
- 00:17:28is keyed in to make that claim and the
- 00:17:30Book of Jonah is just different it just
- 00:17:31it has a different kind of style and and
- 00:17:35what both camps agree on whatever view
- 00:17:37you you hold well both camps agree on is
- 00:17:41that the Book of Jonah is a beautiful
- 00:17:44piece of literary storytelling
- 00:17:47and so my lecture is kind of over now
- 00:17:48this is what I think you'll really be
- 00:17:50interested here is that no matter what
- 00:17:52view behold everybody agrees that the
- 00:17:54Book of Jonah is it as a story that
- 00:17:57reads like two forms of literature we
- 00:17:59have in our culture and those two forms
- 00:18:01of literature one is Saturday Night Live
- 00:18:03and the other one is comic books which
- 00:18:06is why it's by the way we have this
- 00:18:07comic book theme the style of the title
- 00:18:11screen here so so the storytelling style
- 00:18:14of this book is is a form of satire you
- 00:18:17guys familiar with that term I don't on
- 00:18:18let me see you might be so just think
- 00:18:20Saturday Night Live so satire stories
- 00:18:23are where you take very known known
- 00:18:25figures popular figures who are kind of
- 00:18:29stock generic characters so you take
- 00:18:31prints at a live you take political
- 00:18:33figures or celebrity is this kind of
- 00:18:34thing and you place them in extreme
- 00:18:36ridiculous stories that just highlight
- 00:18:40how flawed and screwed up these people
- 00:18:42are right and they're just the you know
- 00:18:44they're just the butt of every joke and
- 00:18:45you're just watching you go oh
- 00:18:46ridiculous these people are so
- 00:18:48ridiculous and satires are always aimed
- 00:18:51not simply telling you about some events
- 00:18:54that took place there aimed at
- 00:18:56critiquing you the reader but getting
- 00:18:57you to laugh while they're making fun of
- 00:18:59you you know I'm saying let's Saturday
- 00:19:00Night Live they're making fun of
- 00:19:01American culture which is you but you're
- 00:19:04laughing while they're doing it and
- 00:19:05holding up these characters for for
- 00:19:08ridicule and so that's exactly the book
- 00:19:10of johna the book of jonah is all about
- 00:19:12stock generic characters so you have the
- 00:19:14Prophet the man of God writes a
- 00:19:17religious prophet and he is the one who
- 00:19:19immediately runs away from God he's
- 00:19:21actually the most hard-hearted hateful
- 00:19:23person in this entire story right that
- 00:19:25has to physically like take him on the
- 00:19:28mission that he's going and vomit him
- 00:19:30out of the fish you know to get him to
- 00:19:31do anything and then all jonah does is
- 00:19:34he preaches a five word in hebrew a five
- 00:19:36word sermon in Nineveh and it was very
- 00:19:39successful this room is very successful
- 00:19:41and he's so angry he wants to die and
- 00:19:43the book ends with him chewing god out
- 00:19:45for being too merciful and he would
- 00:19:47rather dies and live with this god that
- 00:19:49says that's the man of god in the story
- 00:19:51right and then you have the bad guys
- 00:19:53right the the heathen pagan sailors in
- 00:19:55chapter one and the big baton in device
- 00:19:57and they're the most murderous
- 00:19:58oppressive people the planet has ever
- 00:20:00known and they have paper-thin
- 00:20:01conscience --is and they respond to God
- 00:20:04and repent immediately and turn their
- 00:20:06hearts towards him even the cows repent
- 00:20:08in Nineveh and Japheth
- 00:20:11so it's just it's everything is just
- 00:20:14kind of extreme and crazy and you're
- 00:20:15like whoa this is the Book of Jonah
- 00:20:16that's Saturday Night Live is the the
- 00:20:20generic kind of nobody behaves according
- 00:20:22to their stereotype the other feature
- 00:20:23and this is great and you all point this
- 00:20:25out as we as we go along is that the
- 00:20:27book is just full of what you could call
- 00:20:29comic book style everything's
- 00:20:31over-the-top the word the word great or
- 00:20:34huge in Hebrew is god old and it occurs
- 00:20:3815 times in these shorts two pages
- 00:20:41everything's huge in the Book of Jonah
- 00:20:43the storm is huge the ship is huge the
- 00:20:45fish is huge the city is huge the city's
- 00:20:48so huge it says it takes three days to
- 00:20:49walk through it which any ancient reader
- 00:20:51would be like that was a good one that's
- 00:20:53a good one right because we could say
- 00:20:54this it's like a 45 mile wide city there
- 00:20:57is no city in the world that was 45
- 00:21:00miles what Nineveh was seven miles
- 00:21:02around and that was gigantic for its day
- 00:21:05but it's blowing everything out of
- 00:21:06proportion because it was the most
- 00:21:08significant city on the planet at that
- 00:21:10at that time every Jonah is hugely happy
- 00:21:13he's hugely afraid he's like a man has
- 00:21:15manic-depressive he's just too crazy
- 00:21:17that you's a crazy person who needs it
- 00:21:18these ancient therapists so you guys get
- 00:21:23the feel here just everything
- 00:21:24everything's crazy and extreme and and
- 00:21:27this is this is exactly what the author
- 00:21:29is trying to do he's telling us a tale
- 00:21:32and wrapping us in and we go oh this is
- 00:21:34so what a great what incredible story
- 00:21:36this is so look at that guy he's so
- 00:21:38stupid and then you finished the store
- 00:21:39in your life oh that's me dang it you
- 00:21:45don't have you I want to run away
- 00:21:46something like this the power of the
- 00:21:48Book of Jonah so it's the ancient it's
- 00:21:50the biblical Saturday Night Live comic
- 00:21:53book okay my lecture is over
- 00:21:55hey guys done okay good so that's all
- 00:21:58just kind of orient us and I think part
- 00:22:00of it too is we just don't expect this
- 00:22:01kind of thing in the Bible therefore we
- 00:22:03never find it it's kind of like to a
- 00:22:05person with a hammer in their hand
- 00:22:07everything looks like a nail
- 00:22:09so just reverse that to a person who
- 00:22:11doesn't have a hammer in the
- 00:22:12and they never see any nails that
- 00:22:14doesn't I just did that on spot that
- 00:22:16didn't really work but you kind of get
- 00:22:18my poet right
- 00:22:18if you don't think there's satire and
- 00:22:21humor and irony in the Bible of course
- 00:22:23you're never going to see it but once
- 00:22:24you do all of a sudden you realize do
- 00:22:26this Jonah is a piece of dynamite that
- 00:22:29is just being loved at God's people on
- 00:22:32purp in love and the love and compassion
- 00:22:35to help wake us up to the worst
- 00:22:37tendencies
- 00:22:38that it always tended to be going on in
- 00:22:41the community of God's people
- 00:22:43that's the Book of Jonah the word of the
- 00:22:45Lord came to Jonah son of on the time
- 00:22:47hey guys yeah okay let's keep going keep
- 00:22:50going
- 00:22:51the word of the Lord came to Jonah son
- 00:22:54of a meat I now you're supposed to laugh
- 00:22:56right there was this a laugh track
- 00:22:59so Jonah's name means dove Jonah means
- 00:23:05dove son of onit I mean son of
- 00:23:09faithfulness the doves are in you know
- 00:23:13images in the Bible of innocence purity
- 00:23:15and so on the pure innocent one the son
- 00:23:19of faithfulness that's rich that's rich
- 00:23:21because he's the most faceless character
- 00:23:25in the entire story the word of the Lord
- 00:23:28says go to the great city of Nineveh and
- 00:23:32preach against it because it's
- 00:23:35wickedness has has come up before me so
- 00:23:40again there's a whole backstory here
- 00:23:41you're just supposed to know about
- 00:23:43Nineveh you're supposed to know about
- 00:23:44Jonah because he appears one other time
- 00:23:46in the Old Testament and all of a sudden
- 00:23:49you're like oh this is this is rich this
- 00:23:52is so great so this is so great for a
- 00:23:55number of different reasons Jonah he's
- 00:23:57the perfect person to tell to be the
- 00:24:01main character in this story I mean
- 00:24:02there's it's absolutely brilliant that
- 00:24:04he's he's the main character here for a
- 00:24:06few different reasons here's the one
- 00:24:08other time that Jonah is mentioned in
- 00:24:09the Bible in the Old Testament here it's
- 00:24:12in second Kings 14 and just to kind of
- 00:24:15give you a sweep of the story of Israel
- 00:24:17there Jonah comes kind of midway through
- 00:24:20the Kingdom period after David before
- 00:24:22the last book of the Old Testament he's
- 00:24:24right in there and here's the story here
- 00:24:26it's about Jeroboam - now Jeroboam - he
- 00:24:30was the son of Jehovah is rayul in the
- 00:24:34fifteenth year of King a mazayas reign
- 00:24:36in Judah now Jeremiah Jeroboam reigned
- 00:24:40in Samaria 41 years of the long term in
- 00:24:43office yeah 41 years and he did what was
- 00:24:46evil in Yahweh's side he refused to turn
- 00:24:49from the sins that Jeroboam son of nabob
- 00:24:53had led Israel to commit he also
- 00:24:56recovered the territories of Israel
- 00:24:58between Laveau Hamas and the Dead Sea
- 00:25:02just as Yahweh the God of Israel had
- 00:25:05promised through Jonah son of ami ty the
- 00:25:08prophet from God ever now I'm guessing
- 00:25:12that most of us if we came across this
- 00:25:14paragraph and King he would be like okay
- 00:25:16a guy with funny name bad guy won a
- 00:25:19battle now I'm moving on you know Jonah
- 00:25:21that's interesting okay now I'm moving
- 00:25:23on I don't think that's what most of us
- 00:25:24would probably do so know if it really
- 00:25:26really didn't think about what's going
- 00:25:27on here
- 00:25:28Jeroboam - good guy or bad guy I mean
- 00:25:33just look at this clear statement of the
- 00:25:35story good guy or bad guy the really bad
- 00:25:37guy right he's named after Jeroboam the
- 00:25:41first who was the king who led the
- 00:25:43northern tribes to secede essentially
- 00:25:46started a civil war a civil split
- 00:25:48between the tribes of Judah and jerome
- 00:25:50actually built two alternate temples as
- 00:25:52a rival to the temple of Yahweh and
- 00:25:55Jerusalem and he put golden calves in
- 00:25:57them
- 00:25:57that's what Jeroboam did and this guys
- 00:25:59named after him and apparently he didn't
- 00:26:02not only did he just like keep it up he
- 00:26:05he made it even worse he's a bad guy in
- 00:26:08the bit and the biblical imagination
- 00:26:11he's a bad bad King bad as they ever
- 00:26:14came jonah prophesied favorably favor
- 00:26:20and victory for this apostate faceless
- 00:26:23king hmm
- 00:26:26now granted we're told that it was a
- 00:26:27prophecy through yahweh the Jeroboam was
- 00:26:30able to gain through a battle all of
- 00:26:32these different territories up in in the
- 00:26:34northern area but in the later
- 00:26:36imagination later biblical readers that
- 00:26:39would be reading this would be like
- 00:26:40Jonah yeah he's that guy who prophesied
- 00:26:43favored over that really horrible King
- 00:26:45and not only that in the Book of Amos
- 00:26:47chapter 7 Amos actually reverses this he
- 00:26:52says the people of Israel have gotten so
- 00:26:54bad that Yahweh is going to let Assyria
- 00:26:56come and wipe out all of the same
- 00:26:57territories again he's going to go back
- 00:26:59go back because Israel is disobedient
- 00:27:01and so readers of the Bible would view
- 00:27:05again if you know this backstory here
- 00:27:07when you hear Jonah son of Amitai doves
- 00:27:10son of faithfulness you're like mmm yeah
- 00:27:12I don't know about this guy I don't know
- 00:27:14about this guy he he prophesized that
- 00:27:17Israel would increase its national
- 00:27:19territory that's what he's known for
- 00:27:22and now he's being asked to go preach a
- 00:27:26message to Israel's most hated enemies
- 00:27:29and we'll see why why he runs in just in
- 00:27:33just a minute
- 00:27:33now Nineveh good guys bad guys but I had
- 00:27:38to do too much work here so Nineveh was
- 00:27:40the capital city of the ancient
- 00:27:43Assyrians and Assyria was the empire
- 00:27:46that came and wiped out ten of the
- 00:27:48tribes of Israel wiped them right off
- 00:27:50the map they don't exist anymore because
- 00:27:51of Assyria they were the most brutal
- 00:27:54oppressive and violence of the ancient
- 00:27:56empires of the ancient world and we'll
- 00:27:59learn more about them when we get to
- 00:28:01chapters three and four their general
- 00:28:04practice was to plunder a city and
- 00:28:07skinned alive all of the leaders of the
- 00:28:09city in front of everybody before they
- 00:28:11deported them back to Assyria this is
- 00:28:14horrible horrible and so God's depicted
- 00:28:17as this great king and he's surveying
- 00:28:19his realm so to speak and the oppression
- 00:28:22and the injustice of Nineveh rises up
- 00:28:24before him and he is like done like
- 00:28:26that's not going to continue and so he
- 00:28:28sends a messenger doves son of
- 00:28:31faithfulness how's the story going to go
- 00:28:36but Jonah ran away from the Lord and he
- 00:28:41headed for Tarshish he went down to
- 00:28:44Joppa he found a ship bound for that
- 00:28:47port that is for Tarsus and after paying
- 00:28:50the fare he is honest man I suppose
- 00:28:52after all he went
- 00:28:53bored all the children's book for the
- 00:28:57reader my son he's hiding in a little
- 00:28:59basket so it makes it look like he snuck
- 00:29:00on the ship anyway so this is here he
- 00:29:02paid the fare he paid the fare and he
- 00:29:04went aboard the ship he sailed for
- 00:29:07Tarshish to do what says twice in verse
- 00:29:09three
- 00:29:10what's Jonah's ultimate aim here to flee
- 00:29:13from ascetics we're at the beginning and
- 00:29:15right at the end this is this is his
- 00:29:17gold now again another chuckle oh that's
- 00:29:19rich that's a good one that's a really
- 00:29:21that's a really good one and I'll this
- 00:29:23is I'm fully geeking out here tonight so
- 00:29:25let me show you a map let's do the next
- 00:29:28one yes oh the font and I forgot to turn
- 00:29:33off the animation there you go okay
- 00:29:36we'll work on that
- 00:29:36for the second second service so you can
- 00:29:39see the Assyrian Empire here and you can
- 00:29:42see Nineveh is what direction from
- 00:29:44Israel east where does it Jenna go yes
- 00:29:49now not just west Tarsus is the
- 00:29:51equivalent in the Bible of like English
- 00:29:54we say Timbuktu no literally because
- 00:29:57it's the last port before you go through
- 00:30:02what's that the Straits of Gibraltar
- 00:30:03that what that is there yes the Straits
- 00:30:06of Gibraltar and out out to the vast
- 00:30:07ocean that was the edge of the known
- 00:30:09world Jonah doesn't just flee he
- 00:30:12actually flees as far as you can in the
- 00:30:15opposite direction as was humanly
- 00:30:16possible alright that's the idea here
- 00:30:19this guy's he's booking it to Tarshish
- 00:30:21he's trying to get not just like he
- 00:30:24doesn't just go down to Egypt that would
- 00:30:26be fine he actually goes as far in the
- 00:30:28opposite direction as you could possibly
- 00:30:29can and we're supposed to be iconic
- 00:30:31that's great that's crazy that's crazy
- 00:30:33what's he like he's doing and he's a
- 00:30:35prophet for goodness sakes surely he's
- 00:30:37read Psalm 139 the Josh preach from last
- 00:30:40week right can you feel it can you do
- 00:30:42this can you flee from the Lord of
- 00:30:44course you can't I mean he's a part of
- 00:30:47he's a part of the Bible itself clearly
- 00:30:49you should have known Psalm 139
- 00:30:51there's something going on inside his
- 00:30:53heart and inside his mind that is just
- 00:30:55scrambled his view of reality yes we're
- 00:30:57going to camp out on in just in just a
- 00:30:59second here so everything is rich
- 00:31:01everything is is crazy and upside down
- 00:31:04in in
- 00:31:05this in this story and what it raises is
- 00:31:07the question is why
- 00:31:09Jonah's only prophet in the Bible who
- 00:31:11runs away from God he's this upstanding
- 00:31:14religious man of God so we think but yet
- 00:31:16he's actually running furthest from God
- 00:31:19than any other character in the story
- 00:31:21why why does he do this why and why do
- 00:31:25you think I mean Nineveh is in the habit
- 00:31:27of skinning people alive when it
- 00:31:29conquers a city and you're being asked
- 00:31:32to go march into the capital city of
- 00:31:34that Empire and preach against it what
- 00:31:38do you think his motives are it doesn't
- 00:31:39say here but what do you think just from
- 00:31:41reading historia yeah this would be like
- 00:31:44like like parachuting into Berlin or
- 00:31:46Munich during world war two okay like
- 00:31:49that I was like you just and and carry
- 00:31:51up a sign say down with the Third Reich
- 00:31:53you know you just don't you don't do
- 00:31:55that right so we think he's scared he's
- 00:31:59scared right
- 00:32:00God's asked him to do something he's
- 00:32:01scared doesn't want to do it but that's
- 00:32:05not that's not why that's not why he
- 00:32:07runs look at chapter four this is again
- 00:32:11part of the brilliant storytelling of
- 00:32:13the Book of Jonah chapter four verse one
- 00:32:17in chapter three he preached his five
- 00:32:19word sermon the city the King and the
- 00:32:21cows repent but the Jonah the facts that
- 00:32:25the Ninevites should find forgiveness
- 00:32:28and mercy this all seemed very very
- 00:32:31wrong wrong he's angry at the success of
- 00:32:34his own preaching he became angry he
- 00:32:38prayed to the Lord out you can imagine
- 00:32:40through gritted teeth here isn't this
- 00:32:42what I said Lord when I was still back
- 00:32:45at home this is why I was so quick to
- 00:32:49flee to Tarshish I knew that you are
- 00:32:53gracious and compassionate God you're
- 00:32:56slow to anger you're abounding in love a
- 00:32:58God who relents from sending calamity
- 00:33:00now Lord take away my life it'd be
- 00:33:03better for me to die than what does send
- 00:33:09of faithfulness
- 00:33:10so what okay so clearly he needs to see
- 00:33:14an ancient therapist that's clear after
- 00:33:16reading these three verses here but he
- 00:33:18tells you
- 00:33:18exactly what he ran right here if you
- 00:33:21were not afraid why did he run why did
- 00:33:25he when he knew that somehow Yahweh
- 00:33:29would find a way to bring His grace and
- 00:33:32His mercy to these people through their
- 00:33:35repentance he just knew that somehow
- 00:33:38this was going to have a happy ending
- 00:33:40and he does not want a happy ending for
- 00:33:42his enemies and so here this is really
- 00:33:45what's going on here is that Jonah has
- 00:33:47he has a plan he has a wonderful plan
- 00:33:50for his life that's what he does right
- 00:33:51he has a vision of how this prophetic
- 00:33:54career is going to work out and it
- 00:33:56doesn't include this mission so he for
- 00:34:00especially as a prophet up in the
- 00:34:02northern kingdom to be the Prophet that
- 00:34:04brings forgiveness and life and
- 00:34:07repentance to the most hated enemies of
- 00:34:09your people like that's not going to
- 00:34:10great go over great it's not a way to
- 00:34:12win friends and be popular parties or
- 00:34:15stuff but so this just not it's going to
- 00:34:17make him suspect among his own people
- 00:34:19you can of course he doesn't want this
- 00:34:22to work out and so this is it at the
- 00:34:24base of where this is really happening
- 00:34:26here inside of Jonah's heart he knows
- 00:34:28perfectly well the Yahweh loves to show
- 00:34:31mercy
- 00:34:31he knows somehow the Ninevites are going
- 00:34:35to find mercy that just does not fit
- 00:34:37into my vision of what my life is about
- 00:34:39no thanks and so he books it to Tarshish
- 00:34:42and so really how the Book of Jonah
- 00:34:45begins is with a really profound just
- 00:34:50exploration of the nature and the
- 00:34:52psychology of disobedience it's really
- 00:34:55what this is about and I don't know what
- 00:34:58you you know if I say the word obey obey
- 00:35:01or obedience I'm guessing that most of
- 00:35:04us don't have like really flowery
- 00:35:06positive associations coming to the top
- 00:35:09of our minds right and some of you have
- 00:35:11Alan drew the giant that comes to your
- 00:35:13head when I say obey and that's just ten
- 00:35:15of you that look at that that's okay but
- 00:35:18but essentially like the obedience isn't
- 00:35:20a positive idea in our culture and
- 00:35:22that's because for the most part I mean
- 00:35:24we read this the word of the Lord came
- 00:35:26to Jonah go to the great city and we go
- 00:35:28oh here's God commanding people again he
- 00:35:31sure
- 00:35:31to do that in the Bible doesn't it so
- 00:35:34that's how many of us our vision of God
- 00:35:35is he's the power trip whatever kind of
- 00:35:38volatile deity and just loves to kind of
- 00:35:41flick people around tell people what to
- 00:35:43do better submit right that's the vision
- 00:35:45that many of us have of God our default
- 00:35:47mode and many of you have that for lots
- 00:35:49of different reasons primarily because
- 00:35:51many of you had moms and dads that were
- 00:35:53like that and those might be the same
- 00:35:54moms and dads that taught you about God
- 00:35:56and so of course you're going to project
- 00:35:58that back up on to the sky but the
- 00:36:01biblical vision of God is very different
- 00:36:03and think about this command God is
- 00:36:07commanding Jonah to go preach to the
- 00:36:10city of Nineveh there's so many ways the
- 00:36:11story could have gone you guys gods
- 00:36:13could do like what he did at Mount Sinai
- 00:36:15like move in in a big dark cloud and
- 00:36:18lightning and yell down from a bullhorn
- 00:36:20you know and I'm sure that would've been
- 00:36:22very effective over Nineveh I didn't
- 00:36:24like you know turn from your ways and
- 00:36:25you know you're doing wrong horrible
- 00:36:28stop it something and I'm sure that
- 00:36:30would have been effective but God almost
- 00:36:32never does that kind of thing in the
- 00:36:34Bible the the what happened there at
- 00:36:37Mount Sinai was very unique the way that
- 00:36:40God works through almost all events
- 00:36:43throughout the story of the Bible is
- 00:36:44what he called his people into being for
- 00:36:47in the first place
- 00:36:48he chooses to work through his people to
- 00:36:52the primary vehicle they God chooses to
- 00:36:55work through this through people his
- 00:36:56covenant people
- 00:36:57and so what's actually happening here is
- 00:37:00Jonah is being invited to step into a
- 00:37:05story that is much broader that's more
- 00:37:09risky it's way bigger than anything he
- 00:37:11ever signed up for that's basically
- 00:37:12what's happening here Jonah has a vision
- 00:37:14here's what my life is about here's what
- 00:37:16my prophetic career is about yeah
- 00:37:18there's that whole god thing clearly
- 00:37:20calling me in that direction I'm just
- 00:37:22not interested and so at its root what
- 00:37:27this comes down to a way to kind of
- 00:37:29rethink what obedience means in the
- 00:37:32Bible is that God has and we have
- 00:37:36competing competing visions of what life
- 00:37:38is about
- 00:37:38of what the good life is of what
- 00:37:41actually constitutes
- 00:37:43true life as a human being and you and I
- 00:37:46operate according to that vision
- 00:37:48it's just default in there and we behave
- 00:37:51in ways that make the most sense to us
- 00:37:52given our circumstances that's just what
- 00:37:54we do that's how we operate and so Jesus
- 00:37:57comes into the picture
- 00:37:58and he's like follow me and there's a
- 00:38:01whole bunch of things that you're doing
- 00:38:02that you think is life but actually it's
- 00:38:05not life at all that's what's happening
- 00:38:07right here it's competing visions of
- 00:38:09lies and when and when God calls his
- 00:38:11people the first thing that we're
- 00:38:13confronted with is I'm am I going to
- 00:38:16settle for the path of life that I'm on
- 00:38:19and what I call life where am I going to
- 00:38:21entertain this new invitation to lives
- 00:38:24and so you have the sad irony here right
- 00:38:27at the book of johna it is the first
- 00:38:29expose of brokenness in God's people is
- 00:38:32that it's very easy to train ourselves
- 00:38:34through just being in a church community
- 00:38:37or something that we're doing pretty
- 00:38:38good and we're involved or whatever
- 00:38:40doing whatever and so we're like yeah
- 00:38:42okay just making progress here some but
- 00:38:44then there's this clear glaring area of
- 00:38:47our lives where we know we're being
- 00:38:50called to grow we're being called to
- 00:38:52change and somehow we just end up
- 00:38:55especially religious people we just like
- 00:38:58compart we're able to compartmentalize
- 00:38:59that off and be like and yeah not really
- 00:39:01not so much there Jesus but I'll always
- 00:39:04go to a sunday gathering done and won't
- 00:39:06you be happy with me then you know okay
- 00:39:08let's totally how we operate and so
- 00:39:10here's this very religious man who when
- 00:39:12it comes to it here's a core issue where
- 00:39:15his vision of his life is being
- 00:39:16challenged and he's booking it to
- 00:39:19Tarshish and the sad irony is that he
- 00:39:24thinks he's running for his lives he
- 00:39:27thinks God's ruining his party and the
- 00:39:29tragedy is that he's actually running
- 00:39:31from life I mean look what he has a
- 00:39:35chance to participate in a movement of
- 00:39:38God's grace that is on a greater scope
- 00:39:41than anybody had ever known and he
- 00:39:43totally misses out on being a part of it
- 00:39:45and enjoying it because he won't give up
- 00:39:48his little vision that's a good life you
- 00:39:49guys with me what an ancient irrelevant
- 00:39:52story
- 00:39:53I have two sons I'd like to show them
- 00:39:58show them to you
- 00:40:00they should have beer here shortly one
- 00:40:02of them is named Roman he's two and he's
- 00:40:05awesome and the other one is August who
- 00:40:08you've been hearing some about and he's
- 00:40:10now a little over a month old and he's
- 00:40:12he rocked like four hours of sleep in a
- 00:40:15row last night that that progress I'm
- 00:40:18telling you that's progress side so
- 00:40:20these are my two these are my two boys
- 00:40:22and this is a shameless plug to just get
- 00:40:25to show my children in front of all my
- 00:40:26friends
- 00:40:27but this also epitomizes their
- 00:40:29relationship what's happening picture so
- 00:40:32Romans two and he loves he lucky adores
- 00:40:36his little brother he loves to kiss him
- 00:40:38constantly kissing him and he'd also
- 00:40:40does stuff like this we'll just kind of
- 00:40:41run up to him and to his chest to his
- 00:40:44face and this has so much energy
- 00:40:45it'll just be like Aaron is like whoa
- 00:40:49buddy chill out you know so but you
- 00:40:52definitely get the picture here August
- 00:40:55is a passive one right now in Romans the
- 00:40:57charger and this is also for me this
- 00:41:00picture I look at all the time because
- 00:41:02it just was my son Roman right now is he
- 00:41:06has formed he's just turned two he's
- 00:41:08formed this you know the first energy
- 00:41:12around his little selfish well holy cow
- 00:41:15okay and so right now what we're working
- 00:41:18on is this very basic thing which is
- 00:41:20please stop and come here now Roman
- 00:41:22that's if we could just make progress
- 00:41:24there I'd be very happy tonight very
- 00:41:27happy because you know so we're walking
- 00:41:29around the neighborhood or what-have-you
- 00:41:30we live right right closer to division
- 00:41:33and Division Street and does I could
- 00:41:36tell the story 25 different times we're
- 00:41:38cruising on the sidewalk going for a
- 00:41:40walk and he really doesn't know how to
- 00:41:41walk he just runs just runs everywhere
- 00:41:43and so he'll like see a dog or like a
- 00:41:47dump truck or a bike or something he
- 00:41:49likes his long ways off and he's just
- 00:41:51he's just on it alone and so I turned my
- 00:41:54head five seconds and then like he's
- 00:41:56half half way down the block you know
- 00:41:58that kind of thing and so I was talking
- 00:42:00with somebody about this being a parent
- 00:42:02of toddlers is essentially you feel like
- 00:42:04a rescue person every day
- 00:42:06because you're saving them from mortal
- 00:42:08dangers like 10 times every single day
- 00:42:10that's really funny and so he's cruising
- 00:42:12he's cruising and obviously there's like
- 00:42:15busy streets divisions a busy street for
- 00:42:17traffic and bike traffic and so on and
- 00:42:19so we've gotten to the point where we're
- 00:42:20making progress because I could all say
- 00:42:22Roman Roman buddy stop stop and come
- 00:42:25back here and we've gotten to the point
- 00:42:28where he will slow down slow down I know
- 00:42:32look at he'll look at me and he knows I
- 00:42:35mean it's all right there he knows
- 00:42:36exactly what's going on and so here's
- 00:42:38what's what's so hard you guys and it's
- 00:42:41so crazy I have only good will for my
- 00:42:44son I love him more than anything I want
- 00:42:48him to go see that dog so badly all
- 00:42:51right but all he gets and that mama is
- 00:42:53dude dad you are crashing my party right
- 00:42:56now yeah I think like his view of the
- 00:42:59world he has a vision of his life and
- 00:43:01what where things need to go and how I
- 00:43:03was going to work out and I'm ruining
- 00:43:05that clearly clearly ruining that and so
- 00:43:09in his mind he's running for his life
- 00:43:12for his better for betterment you know
- 00:43:15for the good life because he wants to go
- 00:43:16see the dog what he cannot see it he's
- 00:43:20actually running from his life if he
- 00:43:22runs across the street and there's a car
- 00:43:23done you know I'm very aware of that and
- 00:43:26this is precisely the image of what's
- 00:43:29happening here in Java it's exactly the
- 00:43:31image of what's happening
- 00:43:32God wants Jonah to participate in this
- 00:43:35amazing amazing event of His grace and
- 00:43:38mercy coming to these people that you
- 00:43:40would never expect it and he's so
- 00:43:42fixated on his little deal he can't see
- 00:43:46that he's blind to it and so he thinks
- 00:43:48he's running for his life the sad
- 00:43:51reality is he's running from his lives
- 00:43:53and it seems to me this is the situation
- 00:43:56every single one of us finds ourselves
- 00:43:58in every single day when we face the
- 00:44:01decision of whether or not man follow me
- 00:44:02follow Jesus and in a way you know this
- 00:44:06whole vision of obedience and what's
- 00:44:08happening here I mean this is this is
- 00:44:10all summed up at the cross because when
- 00:44:13Jesus calls us to follow him he's
- 00:44:15calling us to see that he was the human
- 00:44:18being he was the faithful human
- 00:44:20the faithful covenant partner of God
- 00:44:22human being that none of us ever was or
- 00:44:25ever ever fully will be the side of his
- 00:44:27return and he lived for us in a way that
- 00:44:32I could never live and he died to absorb
- 00:44:35the cumulative waves of just the
- 00:44:39horrible stupid decisions that we make
- 00:44:41when we run from life when we run
- 00:44:44according to our vision of the good box
- 00:44:46and in His mercy and in his love he
- 00:44:49conquered it by raising from the dead so
- 00:44:52that he can offer us life and grace and
- 00:44:55forgiveness and so like what we did at
- 00:44:58baptism last week at the park when I
- 00:45:00come to Jesus there's a death that takes
- 00:45:03place and it's a death to your vision of
- 00:45:06the good life
- 00:45:07your vision of what your life is about
- 00:45:08you've got to let it die and you got to
- 00:45:12let it die and face that what Jesus is
- 00:45:14asking you to and inviting you into is
- 00:45:18so much richer form of life that you
- 00:45:22could ever imagine which may not involve
- 00:45:24whatever like a big house and nice cars
- 00:45:27or something no that's different that's
- 00:45:28a different gospel okay so what we're
- 00:45:30talking about is what Jesus called
- 00:45:31abundant life life that's so rooted in
- 00:45:35his love for me that I see he only has
- 00:45:39good will for me and when he tells me to
- 00:45:41stop and turn around and come his way he
- 00:45:44only has my best in mind and so this is
- 00:45:48a big room and there might be some of us
- 00:45:51here you know we were on the
- 00:45:53investigative side we wouldn't
- 00:45:54self-identify as Christians or maybe you
- 00:45:57would you're kind of seeking whatever
- 00:45:59trying to figure this whole thing out
- 00:46:00and so you know for those of you first
- 00:46:03of all we're just stoked that you're
- 00:46:04here thank you for being here and you
- 00:46:07know just to put it straight to you
- 00:46:08that's really what's involved here
- 00:46:10becoming a Christian involves letting my
- 00:46:13vision of what my life's about to let it
- 00:46:15die and it may be that I'll take a whole
- 00:46:18bunch of that up again on the other side
- 00:46:20but with a whole different perspective
- 00:46:22now because it's not my little story
- 00:46:25that's at the center it's the fact that
- 00:46:27I am now a bit player in the story of
- 00:46:30Jesus who's at work in the world and
- 00:46:32inviting
- 00:46:33to become a part of it and so could it
- 00:46:35be that your vision of what your life is
- 00:46:37all about is just too small and Jesus is
- 00:46:40inviting you to something different and
- 00:46:42for those of us who are here the
- 00:46:44majority of us we'd self-identify as
- 00:46:46Christians I mean this is everyday and
- 00:46:48so for some of us we might have patterns
- 00:46:50patterns of behavior that we need to
- 00:46:52stop patterns of thinking of ways of
- 00:46:56acting and they don't lead the life and
- 00:46:58we know it and we're scared to let go of
- 00:47:01that because that's what we know that's
- 00:47:03the only life we know and following
- 00:47:06Jesus is in involve letting that die and
- 00:47:08who knows what your life is going to
- 00:47:10look like on the other side of it's the
- 00:47:12choice you have the choice you have for
- 00:47:14some of us it might not be stopping
- 00:47:15behaviors it might be starting new
- 00:47:18behaviors that will invite us into life
- 00:47:21and so the reason why we did the prayer
- 00:47:23series over the summer was to invite the
- 00:47:25whole church into a new phase of growth
- 00:47:27through learning the language of prayer
- 00:47:29and so on that's the path of life and
- 00:47:32some of us we do whatever we we run
- 00:47:34we're lazy we don't want to do the work
- 00:47:36that's involved with carving out times
- 00:47:38for solitude or quiet and so what we
- 00:47:42just it's not a part of our vision of a
- 00:47:45good life and so we're never going to
- 00:47:46get there and that's to our loss and so
- 00:47:49whatever form its forgiveness of someone
- 00:47:52who's wrong with you it's finally like
- 00:47:54spending less money on yourself and
- 00:47:57giving more of it away I don't know
- 00:47:58whatever that step is for you it's a
- 00:48:00competition of views of life and so as
- 00:48:04we go into our time of worship as we
- 00:48:07come towards the bread in the cup I just
- 00:48:09encourage you to just hear this first of
- 00:48:11five punches in the gut from the Book of
- 00:48:13Jonah for those of us who can be honest
- 00:48:17and self aware enough to know that we're
- 00:48:19running this summer some arz realizing
- 00:48:21maybe doing good I guarantee for all of
- 00:48:24us there's some part of our lives where
- 00:48:26you're booking it to Tarshish and your
- 00:48:29Jesus is not welcome there and if you
- 00:48:32want to experience life we have we have
- 00:48:35to let it have to let him go that we
- 00:48:37have to stop running and tonight some of
- 00:48:39us need to make a decision to do that
- 00:48:43and so as we come to the bread in the
- 00:48:45cup as always in our time of worship
- 00:48:47you know for some of us I would just
- 00:48:49encourage you make this a moment where
- 00:48:50you get that issue that person that
- 00:48:52thing in your mind as you take the bread
- 00:48:55in the cup which symbolizes his death is
- 00:48:57broken body whose shed blood on the
- 00:48:59cross for you just ask Jesus to let that
- 00:49:04part let that issue for you whatever it
- 00:49:06is to let it die with him at the cross
- 00:49:08and allow him to speak his life to you
- 00:49:12tonight and it's grace and that's if
- 00:49:15there's anything about the character of
- 00:49:17God revealed in this story it's one of
- 00:49:19extravagant mercy and grace amen amen
- 00:49:23let me close in a word of Prayer
