    harmless tale or something and then you

    realize someone's talking you in the gut

    you're just supposed to know the in-form

    and help you grasp what the author is

    trying to do to you he's trying to mess

    with you here but you need to grasp the

    the first three verses this week to set

    be doing in line with his character and

    so on but for the

    most part the most basic definition and

    role of prophets in the Bible is to

    speak on God's behalf their just

    messengers to speak on God's behalf give

    God's perspective on something and

    that's what a prophet is in the Bible

    and so the word of the Lord comes to

    prophets that kind of turn the page to
  • 00:09:12
    the next book of the Bible it'll just be

    one page for most of you this is another

    book of the prophet Micah and how does

    it begin

    well begins the exact same way the word

    of the Lord that came to Micah of

    Moorish chefs during the reigns of all

    so we turn back to the Book of Jonah and

    we read the first sentence and we say oh

    about to start reading it's a book of

    that's precisely the point the first

    collection of Jonah's poetic prophecy

    like every other book of the prophets

    but that's not what you get what you get

    is a story about this prophet

    his people through a story about a

    prophet and so if you want to hear God's

    Word you have to read and reread and

    meditate and think about the message of

    this story not about a fish about the

    message of the whole story right

    including the chapter I've I have a

    child remote but I read to my son with

    with like grimace clenched teeth or

    something it's the story of Jonah and it

    completely leaves out chapter 4 it

    doesn't even mention the story that he

    gets angry at God and chefs war it's

    because well that's kind of a little

    inappropriate for kids get angry at God

    you know I think so no you got to read

    the whole thing and what is the message

    of this whole of this whole book and so

    what that raises is okay this is a story

    about a prophet what cut what kind of

    story is this and so the Bible is like a

    small library and there are many
  • 00:11:51
    different books there are many different

    kinds of literature in these very
  • 00:11:57
    different books there's different kinds
  • 00:11:58
    of stories different kinds of narratives

    there's different kinds of poetry

    there's erotic love poetry the Song of
  • 00:12:03
    Songs but then there's also prophetic
  • 00:12:05
    poetry which is a different character
  • 00:12:07
    there's you can read someone else's mail

    in the Bible the letters of the New
  • 00:12:10
    Testament and there's different lots of
  • 00:12:13
    narrative one-third of the bible is
  • 00:12:14
    narrative another sort of it is poetry

    and you should not read all of those

    things the same way whenever you open up

    the Bible the first question you should

    ask is what kind of literature my

    reading right now and then how should

    that shape what I expect to get out of

    this and so that's a question we should

    prophet but what kind of story is the

    author telling me like how can I honor

    God's Word and like let it dictate what

    kind of story this is to me and so

    others essentially I'm I have to go very

    quick here because I don't just want to

    give a lecture about The Book of Jonah

    but I think it's helpful because it's

    teaching us how to think and how to read

    the Bible more more intentionally

    there's there's two basic views on what
  • 00:12:58
    kind of story the Book of Jonah is

    there's nothing else like Jonah in the
  • 00:13:01
    Bible there's no other book about a
  • 00:13:04
    prophet and not only that there's no
  • 00:13:07
    other book that has this unique kind of
  • 00:13:10
    storytelling style to it and so you know
  • 00:13:14
    you read kind of teachers or
  • 00:13:16
    commentators and this kind of thing
  • 00:13:18
    across the whole spectrum but even even
  • 00:13:20
    among Orthodox
  • 00:13:21
    Christian scholars the Bible is God's
  • 00:13:23
    Word Jesus God and human that whole deal
  • 00:13:27
    so Orthodox Christian scholars there's
  • 00:13:28
    two views you can come across them and
  • 00:13:30
    all and all of the comment areas one is
  • 00:13:32
    that the author has received a
  • 00:13:34
    historical tradition about this guy
  • 00:13:37
    named Jonah son of amitayus real
  • 00:13:38
    historical figure and he's passing on to
  • 00:13:41
    us this story as a historical account of

    the things that happened in the life of

    Jonah a brief revival in the city of

    Nineveh and so on

    so that's one one view and and very
  • 00:13:53
    common recommend do I think probably

    most people haven't really even thought

    about it they might assume that the
  • 00:13:59
    second view again also held by Orthodox
  • 00:14:01
    Christian scholars is that there's
  • 00:14:04
    something there's more than meets the
  • 00:14:06
    eye to this book it's that the Jonah is
  • 00:14:09
    a form of narrative parable and that
  • 00:14:12
    this is a parable based off of a
  • 00:14:14
    historical real figure because we're
  • 00:14:15
    going to see here Jonah was a real
  • 00:14:17
    figure based on history but that the
  • 00:14:20
    author does not intend us to take the
  • 00:14:22
    story as historical narrative but rather
  • 00:14:24
    as parable similarly to the parable that
  • 00:14:28
    Jesus told in Luke chapter 16 where he
  • 00:14:31
    used a named character the rich man and
  • 00:14:33
    Lazarus in that parable there's very
  • 00:14:36

    you don't believe in the possibility of

    miracles you're sliding towards the

    logical liberalism and you're denying

    the tooth fulness of the Bible okay

    let's just stop stop that stop this is a

    wrong starting point altogether

    though what he's not talking about what

    kind of book is or he's not appealing to

    the historicity of the Book of Jonah

    he's doing what he always does with the

    Old Testament says that these are

    stories and figures that point forward

    to me he says this the book Jonah in the

    whale is a symbol or a type of his

    coming death and burial yeah so Jesus's

    words don't resolve the issue for us you

    have to go to the Book of Jonah itself

    and so here's here's what's interesting

    is no matter what view you you hold a

    Book of Jonah is is unique in how it

    tells its story it doesn't give any

    dates other than Jonah

    it doesn't give you any name it name is

    one of the most important figures in the

    ancient world who's the king of Nineveh

    he's like the king of he's the

    equivalent of the US president in the

    world today he was the ruler of the
  • 00:17:04
    biggest baddest Empire the ancient world

    has ever known and he has no name in the

    story which is very very curious usually
  • 00:17:12
    when difficult or ease of David or
  • 00:17:15
    Solomon or like the for biography
  • 00:17:18
    biographies of Jesus in the New
  • 00:17:20
    Testament they make the historical claim
  • 00:17:22
    just out there they're telling you names
  • 00:17:24
    and dates and other events going on in
  • 00:17:26
    history and look everything everything
  • 00:17:28
    is keyed in to make that claim and the
  • 00:17:30
    Book of Jonah is just different it just

    it has a different kind of style and and

    what both camps agree on whatever view

    you you hold well both camps agree on is

    that the Book of Jonah is a beautiful
  • 00:17:44
    piece of literary storytelling

    and so my lecture is kind of over now

    this is what I think you'll really be

    interested here is that no matter what

    view behold everybody agrees that the

    Book of Jonah is it as a story that

    reads like two forms of literature we

    have in our culture and those two forms

    of literature one is Saturday Night Live
  • 00:18:03
    and the other one is comic books which
  • 00:18:06
    is why it's by the way we have this
  • 00:18:07
    comic book theme the style of the title
  • 00:18:11
    screen here so so the storytelling style

    of this book is is a form of satire you
  • 00:18:17
    guys familiar with that term I don't on
  • 00:18:18

    Saturday Night Live so satire stories

    are where you take very known known
  • 00:18:25
    figures popular figures who are kind of

    stock generic characters so you take

    prints at a live you take political

    figures or celebrity is this kind of

    thing and you place them in extreme

    ridiculous stories that just highlight

    how flawed and screwed up these people

    are right and they're just the you know

    they're just the butt of every joke and

    you're just watching you go oh

    ridiculous these people are so

    ridiculous and satires are always aimed

    not simply telling you about some events

    that took place there aimed at

    critiquing you the reader but getting

    you to laugh while they're making fun of

    you you know I'm saying let's Saturday

    Night Live they're making fun of
  • 00:19:01
    American culture which is you but you're

    laughing while they're doing it and

    holding up these characters for for

    ridicule and so that's exactly the book

    of johna the book of jonah is all about

    stock generic characters so you have the

    Prophet the man of God writes a
  • 00:19:17
    religious prophet and he is the one who
  • 00:19:19
    immediately runs away from God he's
  • 00:19:21
    actually the most hard-hearted hateful
  • 00:19:23
    person in this entire story right that
  • 00:19:25
    has to physically like take him on the
  • 00:19:28
    mission that he's going and vomit him
  • 00:19:30
    out of the fish you know to get him to
  • 00:19:31
    do anything and then all jonah does is
  • 00:19:34
    he preaches a five word in hebrew a five
  • 00:19:36
    word sermon in Nineveh and it was very
  • 00:19:39
    successful this room is very successful

    and he's so angry he wants to die and
  • 00:19:43
    the book ends with him chewing god out
  • 00:19:45
    for being too merciful and he would
  • 00:19:47
    rather dies and live with this god that
  • 00:19:49
    says that's the man of god in the story

    right and then you have the bad guys

    right the the heathen pagan sailors in
  • 00:19:55
    chapter one and the big baton in device

    and they're the most murderous

    oppressive people the planet has ever

    known and they have paper-thin

    conscience --is and they respond to God

    and repent immediately and turn their

    hearts towards him even the cows repent

    in Nineveh and Japheth

    so it's just it's everything is just

    kind of extreme and crazy and you're

    like whoa this is the Book of Jonah

    that's Saturday Night Live is the the

    generic kind of nobody behaves according

    to their stereotype the other feature

    and this is great and you all point this

    out as we as we go along is that the

    book is just full of what you could call

    comic book style everything's

    over-the-top the word the word great or

    huge in Hebrew is god old and it occurs

    15 times in these shorts two pages

    everything's huge in the Book of Jonah

    the storm is huge the ship is huge the
  • 00:20:45
    fish is huge the city is huge the city's
  • 00:20:48
    so huge it says it takes three days to

    walk through it which any ancient reader

    would be like that was a good one that's
  • 00:20:53
    a good one right because we could say
  • 00:20:54
    this it's like a 45 mile wide city there

    is no city in the world that was 45

    miles what Nineveh was seven miles

    around and that was gigantic for its day

    but it's blowing everything out of

    proportion because it was the most
  • 00:21:08
    significant city on the planet at that

    at that time every Jonah is hugely happy

    he's hugely afraid he's like a man has
  • 00:21:15
    manic-depressive he's just too crazy

    that you's a crazy person who needs it

    these ancient therapists so you guys get

    the feel here just everything

    everything's crazy and extreme and and
  • 00:21:27
    this is this is exactly what the author

    is trying to do he's telling us a tale

    and wrapping us in and we go oh this is

    so what a great what incredible story

    this is so look at that guy he's so

    faithfulness the doves are in you know

    images in the Bible of innocence purity

    because he's the most faceless character

    in the entire story the word of the Lord

    says go to the great city of Nineveh and

    preach against it because it's

    wickedness has has come up before me so

    again there's a whole backstory here

    you're just supposed to know about

    Nineveh you're supposed to know about

    Jonah because he appears one other time

    in the Old Testament and all of a sudden

    you're like oh this is this is rich this

    is so great so this is so great for a
  • 00:23:55
    number of different reasons Jonah he's
  • 00:23:57
    the perfect person to tell to be the
  • 00:24:01
    main character in this story I mean

    there's it's absolutely brilliant that

    he's he's the main character here for a
  • 00:24:06
    few different reasons here's the one
  • 00:24:08
    other time that Jonah is mentioned in
  • 00:24:09
    the Bible in the Old Testament here it's
  • 00:24:12
    in second Kings 14 and just to kind of
  • 00:24:15
    give you a sweep of the story of Israel
  • 00:24:17
    there Jonah comes kind of midway through
  • 00:24:20
    the Kingdom period after David before
  • 00:24:22
    the last book of the Old Testament he's
  • 00:24:24
    right in there and here's the story here

    it's about Jeroboam - now Jeroboam - he
  • 00:24:30
    was the son of Jehovah is rayul in the
  • 00:24:34
    fifteenth year of King a mazayas reign

    in Judah now Jeremiah Jeroboam reigned

    in Samaria 41 years of the long term in
  • 00:24:43
    office yeah 41 years and he did what was

    evil in Yahweh's side he refused to turn

    from the sins that Jeroboam son of nabob

    had led Israel to commit he also

    recovered the territories of Israel

    between Laveau Hamas and the Dead Sea

    just as Yahweh the God of Israel had

    Jeroboam - good guy or bad guy I mean

    just look at this clear statement of the

    story good guy or bad guy the really bad

    guy right he's named after Jeroboam the

    first who was the king who led the
  • 00:25:43
    northern tribes to secede essentially

    started a civil war a civil split
  • 00:25:48
    between the tribes of Judah and jerome
  • 00:25:50
    actually built two alternate temples as
  • 00:25:52
    a rival to the temple of Yahweh and
  • 00:25:55
    Jerusalem and he put golden calves in

    them

    that's what Jeroboam did and this guys

    named after him and apparently he didn't

    not only did he just like keep it up he

    he made it even worse he's a bad guy in

    the bit and the biblical imagination

    he's a bad bad King bad as they ever

    came jonah prophesied favorably favor

    and victory for this apostate faceless

    now granted we're told that it was a

    prophecy through yahweh the Jeroboam was

    able to gain through a battle all of

    these different territories up in in the

    northern area but in the later

    imagination later biblical readers that

    would be reading this would be like

    Jonah yeah he's that guy who prophesied

    favored over that really horrible King

    and not only that in the Book of Amos

    chapter 7 Amos actually reverses this he

    says the people of Israel have gotten so

    bad that Yahweh is going to let Assyria

    come and wipe out all of the same
  • 00:26:57
    territories again he's going to go back

    go back because Israel is disobedient

    and so readers of the Bible would view

    again if you know this backstory here

    when you hear Jonah son of Amitai doves

    Israel would increase its national

    territory that's what he's known for

    and now he's being asked to go preach a

    message to Israel's most hated enemies

    and we'll see why why he runs in just in

    now Nineveh good guys bad guys but I had

    to do too much work here so Nineveh was

    the capital city of the ancient

    Assyrians and Assyria was the empire

    that came and wiped out ten of the
  • 00:27:48
    tribes of Israel wiped them right off

    the map they don't exist anymore because

    of Assyria they were the most brutal
  • 00:27:54
    oppressive and violence of the ancient

    empires of the ancient world and we'll
  • 00:27:59
    learn more about them when we get to

    chapters three and four their general

    practice was to plunder a city and
  • 00:28:07
    skinned alive all of the leaders of the

    city in front of everybody before they

    deported them back to Assyria this is

    horrible horrible and so God's depicted

    as this great king and he's surveying

    his realm so to speak and the oppression

    and the injustice of Nineveh rises up

    that's not going to continue and so he

    sends a messenger doves son of

    faithfulness how's the story going to go

    but Jonah ran away from the Lord and he

    headed for Tarshish he went down to

    Joppa he found a ship bound for that

    port that is for Tarsus and after paying

    the fare he is honest man I suppose

    after all he went

    bored all the children's book for the

    reader my son he's hiding in a little

    conquers a city and you're being asked

    to go march into the capital city of

    that Empire and preach against it what

    do you think his motives are it doesn't

    say here but what do you think just from

    reading historia yeah this would be like

    like like parachuting into Berlin or

    Munich during world war two okay like

    up a sign say down with the Third Reich

    that right so we think he's scared he's

    would find a way to bring His grace and

    His mercy to these people through their

    repentance he just knew that somehow

    this was going to have a happy ending

    and he does not want a happy ending for
  • 00:33:42
    his enemies and so here this is really

    what's going on here is that Jonah has
  • 00:33:47
    he has a plan he has a wonderful plan
  • 00:33:50
    for his life that's what he does right
  • 00:33:51
    he has a vision of how this prophetic
  • 00:33:54
    career is going to work out and it
  • 00:33:56
    doesn't include this mission so he for
  • 00:34:00
    especially as a prophet up in the
  • 00:34:02
    northern kingdom to be the Prophet that
  • 00:34:04
    brings forgiveness and life and
  • 00:34:07
    repentance to the most hated enemies of
  • 00:34:09
    your people like that's not going to
  • 00:34:10
    great go over great it's not a way to
  • 00:34:12
    win friends and be popular parties or
  • 00:34:15
    stuff but so this just not it's going to
  • 00:34:17
    make him suspect among his own people
  • 00:34:19
    you can of course he doesn't want this
  • 00:34:22
    to work out and so this is it at the
  • 00:34:24
    base of where this is really happening
  • 00:34:26
    here inside of Jonah's heart he knows
  • 00:34:28
    perfectly well the Yahweh loves to show
  • 00:34:31
    mercy
  • 00:34:31
    he knows somehow the Ninevites are going
  • 00:34:35
    to find mercy that just does not fit
  • 00:34:37
    into my vision of what my life is about
  • 00:34:39
    no thanks and so he books it to Tarshish
  • 00:34:42
    and so really how the Book of Jonah
  • 00:34:45
    begins is with a really profound just
  • 00:34:50
    exploration of the nature and the
  • 00:34:52
    psychology of disobedience it's really
  • 00:34:55
    what this is about and I don't know what
  • 00:34:58
    you you know if I say the word obey obey
  • 00:35:01
    or obedience I'm guessing that most of
  • 00:35:04
    us don't have like really flowery
  • 00:35:06
    positive associations coming to the top
  • 00:35:09
    of our minds right and some of you have
  • 00:35:11
    Alan drew the giant that comes to your

    head when I say obey and that's just ten
  • 00:35:15
    of you that look at that that's okay but
  • 00:35:18
    but essentially like the obedience isn't
  • 00:35:20
    a positive idea in our culture and
  • 00:35:22
    that's because for the most part I mean
  • 00:35:24
    we read this the word of the Lord came
  • 00:35:26
    to Jonah go to the great city and we go
  • 00:35:28
    oh here's God commanding people again he
  • 00:35:31
    sure
  • 00:35:31
    to do that in the Bible doesn't it so
  • 00:35:34
    that's how many of us our vision of God
  • 00:35:35
    is he's the power trip whatever kind of
  • 00:35:38
    volatile deity and just loves to kind of
  • 00:35:41
    flick people around tell people what to
  • 00:35:43
    do better submit right that's the vision
  • 00:35:45
    that many of us have of God our default
  • 00:35:47
    mode and many of you have that for lots
  • 00:35:49
    of different reasons primarily because
  • 00:35:51
    many of you had moms and dads that were
  • 00:35:53
    like that and those might be the same
  • 00:35:54
    moms and dads that taught you about God
  • 00:35:56
    and so of course you're going to project
  • 00:35:58
    that back up on to the sky but the
  • 00:36:01
    biblical vision of God is very different
  • 00:36:03
    and think about this command God is
  • 00:36:07
    commanding Jonah to go preach to the
  • 00:36:10
    city of Nineveh there's so many ways the
  • 00:36:11
    story could have gone you guys gods
  • 00:36:13
    could do like what he did at Mount Sinai
  • 00:36:15
    like move in in a big dark cloud and
  • 00:36:18
    lightning and yell down from a bullhorn
  • 00:36:20
    you know and I'm sure that would've been
  • 00:36:22
    very effective over Nineveh I didn't
  • 00:36:24
    like you know turn from your ways and
  • 00:36:25
    you know you're doing wrong horrible
  • 00:36:28
    stop it something and I'm sure that
  • 00:36:30
    would have been effective but God almost
  • 00:36:32
    never does that kind of thing in the
  • 00:36:34
    Bible the the what happened there at
  • 00:36:37
    Mount Sinai was very unique the way that
  • 00:36:40
    God works through almost all events
  • 00:36:43
    throughout the story of the Bible is
  • 00:36:44
    what he called his people into being for
  • 00:36:47
    in the first place
  • 00:36:48
    he chooses to work through his people to
  • 00:36:52
    the primary vehicle they God chooses to
  • 00:36:55
    work through this through people his
  • 00:36:56
    covenant people
  • 00:36:57
    and so what's actually happening here is
  • 00:37:00
    Jonah is being invited to step into a
  • 00:37:05
    story that is much broader that's more
  • 00:37:09
    risky it's way bigger than anything he
  • 00:37:11
    ever signed up for that's basically
  • 00:37:12
    what's happening here Jonah has a vision
  • 00:37:14
    here's what my life is about here's what
  • 00:37:16
    my prophetic career is about yeah
  • 00:37:18
    there's that whole god thing clearly
  • 00:37:20
    calling me in that direction I'm just
  • 00:37:22
    not interested and so at its root what
  • 00:37:27
    this comes down to a way to kind of
  • 00:37:29
    rethink what obedience means in the
  • 00:37:32
    Bible is that God has and we have
  • 00:37:36
    competing competing visions of what life
  • 00:37:38
    is about
  • 00:37:38
    of what the good life is of what
  • 00:37:41
    actually constitutes
  • 00:37:43
    true life as a human being and you and I
  • 00:37:46
    operate according to that vision
  • 00:37:48
    it's just default in there and we behave
  • 00:37:51
    in ways that make the most sense to us
  • 00:37:52
    given our circumstances that's just what
  • 00:37:54
    we do that's how we operate and so Jesus
  • 00:37:57
    comes into the picture
  • 00:37:58
    and he's like follow me and there's a
  • 00:38:01
    whole bunch of things that you're doing
  • 00:38:02
    that you think is life but actually it's
  • 00:38:05
    not life at all that's what's happening
  • 00:38:07
    right here it's competing visions of
  • 00:38:09
    lies and when and when God calls his
  • 00:38:11
    people the first thing that we're
  • 00:38:13
    confronted with is I'm am I going to
  • 00:38:16
    settle for the path of life that I'm on
  • 00:38:19
    and what I call life where am I going to
  • 00:38:21
    entertain this new invitation to lives
  • 00:38:24
    and so you have the sad irony here right
  • 00:38:27
    at the book of johna it is the first
  • 00:38:29
    expose of brokenness in God's people is
  • 00:38:32
    that it's very easy to train ourselves
  • 00:38:34
    through just being in a church community
  • 00:38:37
    or something that we're doing pretty
  • 00:38:38
    good and we're involved or whatever
  • 00:38:40
    doing whatever and so we're like yeah
  • 00:38:42
    okay just making progress here some but
  • 00:38:44
    then there's this clear glaring area of
  • 00:38:47
    our lives where we know we're being
  • 00:38:50
    called to grow we're being called to
  • 00:38:52
    change and somehow we just end up
  • 00:38:55
    especially religious people we just like
  • 00:38:58
    compart we're able to compartmentalize
  • 00:38:59
    that off and be like and yeah not really
  • 00:39:01
    not so much there Jesus but I'll always
  • 00:39:04
    go to a sunday gathering done and won't
  • 00:39:06
    you be happy with me then you know okay
  • 00:39:08
    let's totally how we operate and so
  • 00:39:10
    here's this very religious man who when
  • 00:39:12
    it comes to it here's a core issue where
  • 00:39:15
    his vision of his life is being
  • 00:39:16
    challenged and he's booking it to
  • 00:39:19
    Tarshish and the sad irony is that he
  • 00:39:24
    thinks he's running for his lives he
  • 00:39:27
    thinks God's ruining his party and the
  • 00:39:29
    tragedy is that he's actually running
  • 00:39:31
    from life I mean look what he has a
  • 00:39:35
    chance to participate in a movement of
  • 00:39:38
    God's grace that is on a greater scope
  • 00:39:41
    than anybody had ever known and he
  • 00:39:43
    totally misses out on being a part of it
  • 00:39:45
    and enjoying it because he won't give up
  • 00:39:48
    his little vision that's a good life you
  • 00:39:49

    he rocked like four hours of sleep in a

    row last night that that progress I'm

    telling you that's progress side so

    these are my two these are my two boys

    and this is a shameless plug to just get

    to show my children in front of all my

    but this also epitomizes their

    relationship what's happening picture so

    Romans two and he loves he lucky adores

    his little brother he loves to kiss him

    constantly kissing him and he'd also

    does stuff like this we'll just kind of

    run up to him and to his chest to his
  • 00:40:44
    face and this has so much energy

    it'll just be like Aaron is like whoa

    buddy chill out you know so but you

    is a passive one right now in Romans the

    charger and this is also for me this

    picture I look at all the time because

    it just was my son Roman right now is he

    has formed he's just turned two he's

    formed this you know the first energy

    around his little selfish well holy cow

    okay and so right now what we're working

    on is this very basic thing which is

    that's if we could just make progress

    there I'd be very happy tonight very

    happy because you know so we're walking

    around the neighborhood or what-have-you

    we live right right closer to division

    and Division Street and does I could

    tell the story 25 different times we're

    cruising on the sidewalk going for a
  • 00:41:40
    walk and he really doesn't know how to

    walk he just runs just runs everywhere
  • 00:41:43
    and so he'll like see a dog or like a
  • 00:41:47
    dump truck or a bike or something he
  • 00:41:49
    likes his long ways off and he's just
  • 00:41:51
    he's just on it alone and so I turned my
  • 00:41:54
    head five seconds and then like he's
  • 00:41:56
    half half way down the block you know
  • 00:41:58
    that kind of thing and so I was talking
  • 00:42:00
    with somebody about this being a parent
  • 00:42:02
    of toddlers is essentially you feel like
  • 00:42:04
    a rescue person every day
  • 00:42:06
    because you're saving them from mortal
  • 00:42:08
    dangers like 10 times every single day
  • 00:42:10
    that's really funny and so he's cruising
  • 00:42:12
    he's cruising and obviously there's like
  • 00:42:15
    busy streets divisions a busy street for
  • 00:42:17
    traffic and bike traffic and so on and
  • 00:42:19
    so we've gotten to the point where we're
  • 00:42:20
    making progress because I could all say
  • 00:42:22
    Roman Roman buddy stop stop and come
  • 00:42:25
    back here and we've gotten to the point
  • 00:42:28
    where he will slow down slow down I know
  • 00:42:32
    look at he'll look at me and he knows I
  • 00:42:35
    mean it's all right there he knows
  • 00:42:36
    exactly what's going on and so here's

    what's what's so hard you guys and it's
  • 00:42:41
    so crazy I have only good will for my
  • 00:42:44
    son I love him more than anything I want
  • 00:42:48
    him to go see that dog so badly all
  • 00:42:51
    right but all he gets and that mama is
  • 00:42:53
    dude dad you are crashing my party right

    now yeah I think like his view of the
  • 00:42:59
    world he has a vision of his life and
  • 00:43:01
    what where things need to go and how I
  • 00:43:03
    was going to work out and I'm ruining
  • 00:43:05
    that clearly clearly ruining that and so
  • 00:43:09
    in his mind he's running for his life
  • 00:43:12
    for his better for betterment you know
  • 00:43:15
    for the good life because he wants to go
  • 00:43:16
    see the dog what he cannot see it he's
  • 00:43:20
    actually running from his life if he
  • 00:43:22
    runs across the street and there's a car
  • 00:43:23
    done you know I'm very aware of that and
  • 00:43:26
    this is precisely the image of what's
  • 00:43:29
    happening here in Java it's exactly the
  • 00:43:31
    image of what's happening
  • 00:43:32
    God wants Jonah to participate in this
  • 00:43:35
    amazing amazing event of His grace and
  • 00:43:38
    mercy coming to these people that you
  • 00:43:40
    would never expect it and he's so
  • 00:43:42
    fixated on his little deal he can't see
  • 00:43:46
    that he's blind to it and so he thinks
  • 00:43:48
    he's running for his life the sad
  • 00:43:51
    reality is he's running from his lives
  • 00:43:53
    and it seems to me this is the situation
  • 00:43:56
    every single one of us finds ourselves
  • 00:43:58
    in every single day when we face the
  • 00:44:01
    decision of whether or not man follow me
  • 00:44:02
    follow Jesus and in a way you know this
  • 00:44:06
    whole vision of obedience and what's
  • 00:44:08
    happening here I mean this is this is
  • 00:44:10
    all summed up at the cross because when
  • 00:44:13
    Jesus calls us to follow him he's
  • 00:44:15
    calling us to see that he was the human
  • 00:44:18
    being he was the faithful human
  • 00:44:20
    the faithful covenant partner of God
  • 00:44:22
    human being that none of us ever was or
  • 00:44:25
    ever ever fully will be the side of his
  • 00:44:27
    return and he lived for us in a way that
  • 00:44:32
    I could never live and he died to absorb
  • 00:44:35
    the cumulative waves of just the
  • 00:44:39
    horrible stupid decisions that we make
  • 00:44:41
    when we run from life when we run
  • 00:44:44
    according to our vision of the good box
  • 00:44:46
    and in His mercy and in his love he
  • 00:44:49
    conquered it by raising from the dead so
  • 00:44:52
    that he can offer us life and grace and
  • 00:44:55
    forgiveness and so like what we did at
  • 00:44:58
    baptism last week at the park when I
  • 00:45:00
    come to Jesus there's a death that takes
  • 00:45:03
    place and it's a death to your vision of
  • 00:45:06
    the good life
  • 00:45:07
    your vision of what your life is about
  • 00:45:08
    you've got to let it die and you got to
  • 00:45:12
    let it die and face that what Jesus is
  • 00:45:14
    asking you to and inviting you into is
  • 00:45:18
    so much richer form of life that you
  • 00:45:22
    could ever imagine which may not involve
  • 00:45:24
    whatever like a big house and nice cars
  • 00:45:27
    or something no that's different that's
  • 00:45:28
    a different gospel okay so what we're
  • 00:45:30
    talking about is what Jesus called
  • 00:45:31
    abundant life life that's so rooted in
  • 00:45:35
    his love for me that I see he only has
  • 00:45:39
    good will for me and when he tells me to
  • 00:45:41
    stop and turn around and come his way he
  • 00:45:44
    only has my best in mind and so this is
  • 00:45:48
    a big room and there might be some of us
  • 00:45:51
    here you know we were on the
  • 00:45:53
    investigative side we wouldn't
  • 00:45:54
    self-identify as Christians or maybe you
  • 00:45:57
    would you're kind of seeking whatever
  • 00:45:59
    trying to figure this whole thing out
  • 00:46:00
    and so you know for those of you first
  • 00:46:03
    of all we're just stoked that you're
  • 00:46:04
    here thank you for being here and you
  • 00:46:07
    know just to put it straight to you
  • 00:46:08
    that's really what's involved here
  • 00:46:10
    becoming a Christian involves letting my
  • 00:46:13
    vision of what my life's about to let it
  • 00:46:15
    die and it may be that I'll take a whole
  • 00:46:18
    bunch of that up again on the other side
  • 00:46:20
    but with a whole different perspective
  • 00:46:22
    now because it's not my little story
  • 00:46:25
    that's at the center it's the fact that
  • 00:46:27
    I am now a bit player in the story of
  • 00:46:30
    Jesus who's at work in the world and
  • 00:46:32
    inviting
  • 00:46:33
    to become a part of it and so could it
  • 00:46:35
    be that your vision of what your life is
  • 00:46:37
    all about is just too small and Jesus is
  • 00:46:40
    inviting you to something different and
  • 00:46:42
    for those of us who are here the
  • 00:46:44
    majority of us we'd self-identify as
  • 00:46:46
    Christians I mean this is everyday and
  • 00:46:48
    so for some of us we might have patterns
  • 00:46:50
    patterns of behavior that we need to
  • 00:46:52
    stop patterns of thinking of ways of
  • 00:46:56
    acting and they don't lead the life and
  • 00:46:58
    we know it and we're scared to let go of
  • 00:47:01
    that because that's what we know that's
  • 00:47:03
    the only life we know and following
  • 00:47:06
    Jesus is in involve letting that die and
  • 00:47:08
    who knows what your life is going to
  • 00:47:10
    look like on the other side of it's the
  • 00:47:12
    choice you have the choice you have for
  • 00:47:14
    some of us it might not be stopping
  • 00:47:15
    behaviors it might be starting new
  • 00:47:18
    behaviors that will invite us into life
  • 00:47:21
    and so the reason why we did the prayer
  • 00:47:23
    series over the summer was to invite the
  • 00:47:25
    whole church into a new phase of growth
  • 00:47:27
    through learning the language of prayer
  • 00:47:29
    and so on that's the path of life and
  • 00:47:32
    some of us we do whatever we we run
  • 00:47:34
    we're lazy we don't want to do the work
  • 00:47:36
    that's involved with carving out times
  • 00:47:38
    for solitude or quiet and so what we
  • 00:47:42
    just it's not a part of our vision of a
  • 00:47:45
    good life and so we're never going to
  • 00:47:46
    get there and that's to our loss and so
  • 00:47:49
    whatever form its forgiveness of someone
  • 00:47:52
    who's wrong with you it's finally like
  • 00:47:54
    spending less money on yourself and
  • 00:47:57
    giving more of it away I don't know
  • 00:47:58
    whatever that step is for you it's a
  • 00:48:00
    competition of views of life and so as
  • 00:48:04
    we go into our time of worship as we
  • 00:48:07
    come towards the bread in the cup I just
  • 00:48:09
    encourage you to just hear this first of
  • 00:48:11
    five punches in the gut from the Book of
  • 00:48:13
    Jonah for those of us who can be honest
  • 00:48:17
    and self aware enough to know that we're
  • 00:48:19
    running this summer some arz realizing
  • 00:48:21
    maybe doing good I guarantee for all of
  • 00:48:24
    us there's some part of our lives where
  • 00:48:26
    you're booking it to Tarshish and your
  • 00:48:29
    Jesus is not welcome there and if you
  • 00:48:32
    want to experience life we have we have
  • 00:48:35
    to let it have to let him go that we
  • 00:48:37
    have to stop running and tonight some of
  • 00:48:39
    us need to make a decision to do that
  • 00:48:43
    and so as we come to the bread in the
  • 00:48:45
    cup as always in our time of worship
  • 00:48:47
    you know for some of us I would just
  • 00:48:49
    encourage you make this a moment where
  • 00:48:50
    you get that issue that person that
  • 00:48:52
    thing in your mind as you take the bread
  • 00:48:55
    in the cup which symbolizes his death is
  • 00:48:57
    broken body whose shed blood on the
  • 00:48:59
    cross for you just ask Jesus to let that
  • 00:49:04
    part let that issue for you whatever it
  • 00:49:06
    is to let it die with him at the cross
  • 00:49:08
    and allow him to speak his life to you
  • 00:49:12
    tonight and it's grace and that's if
  • 00:49:15
    there's anything about the character of
  • 00:49:17
    God revealed in this story it's one of
  • 00:49:19
    extravagant mercy and grace amen amen
  • 00:49:23
