- 00:01:40going to be extremely interesting both
- 00:01:42for myself and our listeners absolutely
- 00:01:45I'm excited to be here as well
- 00:01:46Franchesca and uh I have a great
- 00:01:48fondness for Romania and for Romanians
- 00:01:51because I I've had a chance to work with
- 00:01:53some of your Intelligence Officers and
- 00:01:55you have a really fantastic intelligence
- 00:01:57team that comes out of Romania that's
- 00:01:59actually born of Soviet Roots but has
- 00:02:02reinvented itself as a western Ally so I
- 00:02:05don't know whether you knew that or not
- 00:02:06but you come from Fantastic ilk I had no
- 00:02:09idea tell me more about that oh my God
- 00:02:12that's
- 00:02:13crazy so it's true so the Romanian
- 00:02:15intelligence service actually does a lot
- 00:02:17of fantastic work uh when it comes to
- 00:02:19countering illicit Finance countering
- 00:02:21nuclear proliferation countering
- 00:02:23terrorism all across Europe uh
- 00:02:25throughout NATO as a NATO Ally and in
- 00:02:29bringing some of the KGB best practices
- 00:02:32to Western partners that otherwise would
- 00:02:34never have had a chance to know how the
- 00:02:35KGB operated or to apply KGB tactics
- 00:02:38into Western intelligence models so
- 00:02:41really a fantastic country that you come
- 00:02:42from uh a huge a huge Ally to the West
- 00:02:46wow that is so interesting I had no idea
- 00:02:49I'll look more into it after this
- 00:02:51conversation this is so
- 00:02:53fascinating amazing but like how are you
- 00:02:57how how does the the day of a for for
- 00:03:00mer CIA spy look like it's uh it's
- 00:03:03pretty typical day I mean it doesn't
- 00:03:04look that much different from the
- 00:03:05average person except that what I'll say
- 00:03:07is Cia taught me to have a lot of
- 00:03:10discipline around certain behaviors and
- 00:03:13to worry less about other behaviors so
- 00:03:16for example I'm very disciplined about
- 00:03:17sleep and I'm very disciplined about
- 00:03:19exercise because those are areas that
- 00:03:22have huge impact on your cognitive
- 00:03:23functions but I'm less interested in I'm
- 00:03:26less worried about diet I'm less worried
- 00:03:28about uh social stress or social
- 00:03:30pressure uh those are areas that
- 00:03:32actually don't have as much of an impact
- 00:03:34on your cognitive functions or on your
- 00:03:36long-term physical health so it's there
- 00:03:39it's been great because CIA gave me a f
- 00:03:42a foundation that's been really useful
- 00:03:44in everyday life as well as in corporate
- 00:03:46and business life uh that most average
- 00:03:48people don't get so they taught you how
- 00:03:51to sleep well not how to eat well well
- 00:03:54they told you that you must sleep well
- 00:03:57but you don't necessarily have to eat
- 00:03:58well that is so interesting I think
- 00:04:01that's very controversial because
- 00:04:03there's so many like people talking
- 00:04:04about diet and like how to eat but
- 00:04:07you're saying is not that important
- 00:04:09correct it's I mean in a hierarchy of
- 00:04:11priorities because here's the truth CIA
- 00:04:13prioritizes everything because there are
- 00:04:16certain operations certain missions
- 00:04:17certain countries certain threats that
- 00:04:20are a clear and present danger and then
- 00:04:23there are others that are a long-term
- 00:04:25simmering or strategic danger so when
- 00:04:27you have to dedicate money and time time
- 00:04:30and lives right now you're going to
- 00:04:32assign those to the highest priority
- 00:04:34threats and then the lower priority
- 00:04:36threats you'll deal with a different day
- 00:04:38that's how terrible things happen but
- 00:04:40that's also how wonderful things happen
- 00:04:43911 happened because we deprioritized
- 00:04:45terrorism at a time when it shouldn't
- 00:04:48have been deprioritized CIA prioritizes
- 00:04:50everything so there are different
- 00:04:52threats that are clear in present and
- 00:04:54then there are some threats that are
- 00:04:55more long-term and strategic uh and when
- 00:04:58you have limited time and money and
- 00:05:00people and resources like CIA does you
- 00:05:02have to dedicate those resources to the
- 00:05:04top priority things essentially the
- 00:05:07things that will make the most impact in
- 00:05:09the least amount of time and they take
- 00:05:11that same model and they apply it to how
- 00:05:14we think how we train how we take care
- 00:05:16of our bodies our our mental health our
- 00:05:18physical health and one of those things
- 00:05:20that has a huge impact immediately is
- 00:05:23sleep one of the things that has a less
- 00:05:26significant impact right away is diet so
- 00:05:30if you can make your diet healthier
- 00:05:32that's great but you can't let yourself
- 00:05:35sacrifice sleep because sacrificing
- 00:05:37sleep reduces your ability to think your
- 00:05:40ability to process your ability to
- 00:05:41remember your ability to engage and
- 00:05:43Converse all of those things are
- 00:05:45critical to the success of not only a
- 00:05:46spy but a career professional a spouse a
- 00:05:50business owner like without the ability
- 00:05:53to remember a conversation and think and
- 00:05:55process critically you're kind of lost
- 00:05:57and you feel lost in the water which is
- 00:05:59what in part feeds people's caffeine
- 00:06:01addiction because they trust caffeine to
- 00:06:03make up for lost sleep which is a
- 00:06:06falsehood that's so interesting now I'm
- 00:06:09really curious what does your sleep and
- 00:06:11everyday schedule look like how do you
- 00:06:13organize you know based on this
- 00:06:15prioritize priorities yeah yeah
- 00:06:17absolutely so I prioritize sleep at the
- 00:06:20top of my list meaning I give myself no
- 00:06:22less than a six to eight hour window of
- 00:06:24sleep every day that doesn't always mean
- 00:06:27that I get 6 hours minimum of sleep
- 00:06:30because sometimes you know my children
- 00:06:31will wake up in the middle of the night
- 00:06:33sometimes I have a call late at night
- 00:06:35that that turns my brain on and I'll
- 00:06:37have a hard time shutting my brain off
- 00:06:39but I give myself those eight hours of
- 00:06:42window in order to sleep so sometimes
- 00:06:45that sleep is seven hours sometimes that
- 00:06:46sleep is eight hours sometimes it's
- 00:06:48eight and a half hours I also do not
- 00:06:49wake up to an alarm it's important to
- 00:06:52let your body decide when it wakes up so
- 00:06:55that uh you don't force yourself and you
- 00:06:57don't interrupt your Cadian Rhythm which
- 00:06:59is something that unfortunately most
- 00:07:00people who work 99 to5 don't either a
- 00:07:03they don't have a choice or B they
- 00:07:05haven't created a lifestyle that allows
- 00:07:07them to wake up naturally so they go to
- 00:07:09bed at midnight to a 5 AM alarm when in
- 00:07:12fact what your body really wants is to
- 00:07:13wake up naturally on its own to
- 00:07:15interrupt its own Cadian Rhythm when it
- 00:07:17comes to a natural completion so for me
- 00:07:21I get a full night's sleep I do not wake
- 00:07:23myself up I do not wake myself up with
- 00:07:25an alarm I let myself wake up naturally
- 00:07:27uh and then the first thing I do is
- 00:07:28actually hyd before I eat or drink
- 00:07:31anything I drink water first and I drink
- 00:07:35water first because water hydrates all
- 00:07:37of your internal systems it hydrates
- 00:07:39your stomach it immediately is processed
- 00:07:41by your intestines it goes to your heart
- 00:07:43it goes to your colon it goes to your
- 00:07:44bladder it goes to your brain and all
- 00:07:47that hydration jump starts the body but
- 00:07:49it takes about 15 minutes so for people
- 00:07:52who wake up and don't drink water
- 00:07:54instead they drink caffeine or they
- 00:07:56drink coffee the thing that is actually
- 00:07:58waking them up isn't the caffeine it's
- 00:08:00the water in the coffee but then what
- 00:08:03the caffeine is doing is immediately
- 00:08:05conflicting or uh uh creating problems
- 00:08:09with their mental and their biological
- 00:08:12processes which is why people poop after
- 00:08:14they drink caffeine or why people get
- 00:08:17shaky after they drink caffeine because
- 00:08:19the caffeine is messing with your body
- 00:08:21when the actual benefits that you're
- 00:08:22getting are really primarily from the
- 00:08:24water so you can actually skip the
- 00:08:26coffee skip the tea cut straight to
- 00:08:27water and get 80% of the same benefits
- 00:08:29that you're actually looking
- 00:08:31for do they teach you all of this as
- 00:08:34part of your training they do they teach
- 00:08:36you all of this because when you're an
- 00:08:38operator in the field you don't have the
- 00:08:41luxuries of what we have here in America
- 00:08:43you don't have fresh berries you don't
- 00:08:46have fresh eggs you don't have coffee
- 00:08:48you don't have hot water you don't even
- 00:08:50have clean water and all the places that
- 00:08:52you might operate so instead they have
- 00:08:55to create a process that you can follow
- 00:08:57every morning no matter where you're
- 00:08:59deployed whether you're in Africa South
- 00:09:01America Russia China Mongolia Australia
- 00:09:05Canada France anywhere you might be you
- 00:09:08want to have some kind of consistent
- 00:09:10dietary consistent mour process that you
- 00:09:13can rely on and you can do it every day
- 00:09:17that makes a lot of sense I want to know
- 00:09:19a bit more about you know how did you
- 00:09:21actually become a spy and what was like
- 00:09:23the Recruitment and training process
- 00:09:25like so I kind of became a spy a little
- 00:09:28bit accidentally I was trying to get out
- 00:09:30of the US Air Force I was a military
- 00:09:32officer and I was trying to leave the
- 00:09:34Air Force and go into doing something
- 00:09:36more humanitarian I was actually trying
- 00:09:37to apply to the Peace Corp because what
- 00:09:39I really wanted in my life was like a
- 00:09:42hippie chick that was going to be my
- 00:09:43girlfriend and a tent where we could
- 00:09:45have sweet sweet love making sessions
- 00:09:48and I wanted to save all the Nigerian
- 00:09:50like children and orphans from pain like
- 00:09:53that was that that was my mission after
- 00:09:54I left the Air Force but apparently in
- 00:09:56the process of signing up for the Peace
- 00:09:58Corps C
- 00:09:59found my application and tapped me on
- 00:10:01the shoulder and said hey if you think
- 00:10:03you'll like that kind of job we've got a
- 00:10:06job that you might also be interested in
- 00:10:08and that's how I ended up being picked
- 00:10:10up by CIA now I still had to go through
- 00:10:12an interview process just like you said
- 00:10:13and that interview process is really
- 00:10:15less about an interview and more about a
- 00:10:18series of tests psychological tests
- 00:10:21memory tests critical thinking tests we
- 00:10:23also go through a series of roleplay or
- 00:10:25scenario based testing which is when a
- 00:10:28panel of people say hey this is the
- 00:10:30situation what do you do or a specific
- 00:10:33person sits across the table from you
- 00:10:35and says hey we're going to do a role
- 00:10:36play this is the situation this is who I
- 00:10:39am what are you going to do and we
- 00:10:41literally roleplay act it out and
- 00:10:43they'll assess your Performance Based on
- 00:10:46the role play because what they're
- 00:10:47really looking for is your critical
- 00:10:48thinking your decision under pressor uh
- 00:10:50you know do you do you comport yourself
- 00:10:54well under moments of hostility or
- 00:10:56moments of confusion or moments of high
- 00:10:58emotion
- 00:11:00high stress that's the process really to
- 00:11:03determine whether or not you ever truly
- 00:11:05get the interview only after they know
- 00:11:07that you've passed all the exams do you
- 00:11:09ever sit down with somebody who asks you
- 00:11:12what are you the most proud of and what
- 00:11:14have you done in your career that you
- 00:11:15are impressed with and what is your
- 00:11:1710year goal nobody talks to you about
- 00:11:19those things until after they know that
- 00:11:21you're worth talking
- 00:11:22to are there certain things you're
- 00:11:25looking for in terms of like skills or
- 00:11:27talents or I know personality type you
- 00:11:31know what I discovered about how CIA
- 00:11:34recruits I didn't learn until later in
- 00:11:36my career when I was first recruited I
- 00:11:38think I was just too excited to be
- 00:11:40someone who's potentially going to be a
- 00:11:42CIA officer like every time I flew to
- 00:11:44Washington DC every time I got to sit in
- 00:11:46on the interview even when I was
- 00:11:47strapped to the polygraph machine I was
- 00:11:50excited I was like oh my gosh like this
- 00:11:51is like the movies I get to do this who
- 00:11:53gets to do this I was just excited it
- 00:11:56wasn't until after I became a middle
- 00:11:58ranking officer
- 00:11:59that I discovered what we were actually
- 00:12:01looking for and the way CIA works is
- 00:12:03like this it's a large ecosystem there's
- 00:12:06multiple Specialties I mean of course
- 00:12:08there's linguists and of course there's
- 00:12:10case officers and of course there's
- 00:12:11analysts but there's also disguise
- 00:12:14Specialists and Mission planners and
- 00:12:15finance people and budget people so
- 00:12:17there's a large contingent of very
- 00:12:20different types of skills CIA has
- 00:12:22mastered its hiring process so that it
- 00:12:25knows what types of personality traits
- 00:12:27and personality types are going to be
- 00:12:29the most successful for the longest
- 00:12:32period of time in each of those career
- 00:12:34Fields because if you think about it
- 00:12:36nobody lasts longer than seven to 10
- 00:12:38years really anymore so CIA needs to
- 00:12:40know before they spend
- 00:12:43$150,000 training you they need to know
- 00:12:46that you're going to make it longer than
- 00:12:48two or three years right so there's a
- 00:12:50great deal of of investment in
- 00:12:53psychological understanding and a great
- 00:12:56deal of investment in uh training and
- 00:12:58also so Franchesca frankly there's a lot
- 00:13:01of investment in
- 00:13:03brainwashing people who come in so that
- 00:13:07their ego and their values and their
- 00:13:10personal motivations are heavily tied to
- 00:13:13the job so what one of the main things
- 00:13:16that they're looking for when people
- 00:13:17come into CIA is actually a history of
- 00:13:20childhood trauma because people who have
- 00:13:23childhood trauma are often seeking
- 00:13:25validation externally so we become very
- 00:13:28loyal to the idea and opinions of others
- 00:13:32well CIA knows how to shape that trauma
- 00:13:34to make you very loyal to CIA to make
- 00:13:38you seek validation from CIA and your
- 00:13:41supervisors and that's a great way of
- 00:13:43keeping people for a long period of time
- 00:13:45after you've put so much training and
- 00:13:46investment into them that is extremely
- 00:13:50fascinating I wouldn't have thought
- 00:13:51about this that's so cool what area of
- 00:13:55the CIA were you working in so CIA has
- 00:13:59four primary different directorates uh
- 00:14:01those directorates are Science and
- 00:14:02Technology analysis Logistics and
- 00:14:04Operations Logistics is sometimes known
- 00:14:06as support I was on the operations side
- 00:14:09uh specifically I was part of the
- 00:14:11National Clandestine Service what was
- 00:14:13known as the NCS which sometimes is also
- 00:14:15called the directorate of operations it
- 00:14:17kind of has a two names at one time uh
- 00:14:19and that's how I got into the world of
- 00:14:21of clandestine field operations and that
- 00:14:24was my specialty was in collecting
- 00:14:27clandestine secrets from foreign
- 00:14:30adversaries that could be used to keep
- 00:14:32America
- 00:14:33safe wow do you have a favorite Mission
- 00:14:36from all the missions that you went on
- 00:14:38maybe one where you had to wear a
- 00:14:40disguise or something like that I
- 00:14:42actually do but my most favorite mission
- 00:14:44is one I can't share because it's still
- 00:14:46classified but I do I do have a story
- 00:14:48that I don't think many people know
- 00:14:50about right I had an opportunity to uh
- 00:14:54to engage in an operation in Africa to
- 00:14:58support uh a a de Democratic movement
- 00:15:03against a coup attempt that was actually
- 00:15:05carried out by a radio DJ so if you can
- 00:15:07believe this a radio DJ successfully
- 00:15:11executed a coup in a country in Africa
- 00:15:14you can I mean if anybody who's talented
- 00:15:16with Google can find this for themselves
- 00:15:18and it was one of those operations where
- 00:15:21you sit back and you can't help but
- 00:15:22laugh you can't help but laugh and be
- 00:15:24like this is who gets to do this who
- 00:15:27gets to who gets to travel
- 00:15:29to support democracy to fight for
- 00:15:31Freedom against a coup attempt that's
- 00:15:34being led by a disc jockey right that's
- 00:15:37the kind of stuff that nobody ever
- 00:15:39thinks about yes there are all the
- 00:15:41counterterrorism operations and there's
- 00:15:42the cool stuff that happens in the war
- 00:15:44zone and there's all the very dangerous
- 00:15:47um sexy mysterious stuff that you read
- 00:15:50about in spy books and watch on spy
- 00:15:51movies that happen all over the world
- 00:15:54but never in a million years did I
- 00:15:55anticipate that I would be uh working in
- 00:15:57Africa against the DJ uh who was trying
- 00:16:00to destroy
- 00:16:02democracy that's insane and I think that
- 00:16:06speaks a lot about I guess some of the
- 00:16:09misconceptions or myths that Hollywood
- 00:16:12like promotes what would you say you
- 00:16:14know are the biggest myths and what's
- 00:16:17reality the biggest myth in Hollywood
- 00:16:19about CIA officers is that we are born
- 00:16:22special like there's something special
- 00:16:25about us like we have some kind of
- 00:16:26superpower we're so smart that we learn
- 00:16:29five languages we're so gifted that we
- 00:16:32can uh you know put on a disguise and
- 00:16:34speak with an accent and you know fire
- 00:16:37any kind of gun under the sun uh we know
- 00:16:40how to drive fast and shoot out the
- 00:16:41window right those are those are things
- 00:16:43that are complete Fabrications that are
- 00:16:46that are uh perpetuated by spy media in
- 00:16:51reality CIA officers are just very
- 00:16:55normal people we are everyday people but
- 00:16:58we are every people that have a specific
- 00:17:00skill that CIA thinks is needed at a
- 00:17:03specific moment so for example I was
- 00:17:06just a brown guy who studied Chinese who
- 00:17:10was in the Air Force at a time when what
- 00:17:13CIA was looking for was brown people
- 00:17:16with a high security clearance that they
- 00:17:18could use against terrorists right in
- 00:17:212007 so that's how I became interesting
- 00:17:25but 1999 when there was no war on terror
- 00:17:29CIA was very interested in Caucasian men
- 00:17:32and Caucasian women that could be used
- 00:17:35to fight Russia in a cold war that was
- 00:17:37extended right the cold war that ended
- 00:17:40in with the fall of the Berlin Wall was
- 00:17:43really still the war that continued
- 00:17:44until 2001 so it's always different even
- 00:17:48now if you think about it with the
- 00:17:50conflicts in Iran and the conflicts in
- 00:17:52the Middle East who do you think CIA is
- 00:17:54interested in people who would pass as
- 00:17:57Muslim CIA wants women because women can
- 00:18:01live and work and operate in parts of
- 00:18:04Muslim countries where men aren't even
- 00:18:07allowed right so that's the kind of when
- 00:18:11when we had a war on terrorism in
- 00:18:12Afghanistan and Pakistan all of a sudden
- 00:18:14the top language was pastan when our
- 00:18:17primary threat was Russia the top
- 00:18:19language was Russian when our top threat
- 00:18:22becomes China the top language in demand
- 00:18:24is going to be Chinese so it's not that
- 00:18:27there's these gifted superheroes that
- 00:18:29CIA goes and finds CIA goes and finds
- 00:18:32normal people that are good at something
- 00:18:35and then CIA knows that because they're
- 00:18:37good at that one thing they can be
- 00:18:39trained to be good at all the other
- 00:18:41things that they need to
- 00:18:43know that's so interesting and I'm
- 00:18:46curious you think about it think about
- 00:18:47all the people who don't take the time
- 00:18:49to become good at one thing think about
- 00:18:51all the people out there who who know
- 00:18:54that they're good at something they know
- 00:18:55they're good at puzzles they know
- 00:18:57they're good at Athletics they know
- 00:18:59they're good at remembering things they
- 00:19:00know they're good at languages but their
- 00:19:03job or their lifestyle never lets them
- 00:19:05Master it because they're too busy being
- 00:19:09a cook or being a waiter or also taking
- 00:19:12care of two kids or being a spouse of a
- 00:19:15military member so they never get to
- 00:19:17master the thing that they're good at
- 00:19:19the sad part is because they never get
- 00:19:21to master the thing that they're good at
- 00:19:22they never get to unlock the cognitive
- 00:19:24processes that allow them to discover
- 00:19:26Mastery and if you can't discover
- 00:19:28mastery in one thing you'll never
- 00:19:31Discovery Mastery you'll never discover
- 00:19:32Mastery in something
- 00:19:35else that's very interesting do you also
- 00:19:38need to SED did you ever need to like
- 00:19:41seduce or attract someone in a mission
- 00:19:43or you know do CIA spies do that do they
- 00:19:46teach you how to seduce and attract with
- 00:19:49your sexuality so this is this is a
- 00:19:52sensitive area
- 00:19:54because CIA teaches you all the skills
- 00:19:57that you need in order to attract
- 00:20:00someone of the opposite sex or the same
- 00:20:02sex and they teach you all the skills
- 00:20:04that you need to know how to seduce
- 00:20:08which really means attract someone
- 00:20:10sexually they teach you all the skills
- 00:20:12that you need in order to do that as
- 00:20:13well however we don't engage in
- 00:20:16operations where the end goal is some
- 00:20:20kind of sexual
- 00:20:22encounter because CIA is a a it's a
- 00:20:26western service it's an American
- 00:20:27intelligence service and everybody who
- 00:20:29is part of CIA every officer inside of
- 00:20:32CIA is an American citizen and those
- 00:20:34American citizens carry their American
- 00:20:36rights and there is a protection in
- 00:20:39American rights that make it so that you
- 00:20:41don't ever have to engage in sexual
- 00:20:43exploitation on behalf of your employer
- 00:20:45especially not if your employer is the
- 00:20:47federal government so you might know how
- 00:20:50to seduce and attract people but you'll
- 00:20:52never be called on to have sex with
- 00:20:55somebody so depending on the operation
- 00:20:58you might might choose to be attractive
- 00:21:00so that they pay attention to you but
- 00:21:02you would never be forced to have a
- 00:21:04sexual encounter often times what we
- 00:21:06will do is we will actually engage
- 00:21:08somebody who we know is attracted to us
- 00:21:11but then when it comes to sex itself we
- 00:21:14will distract or we'll redirect that
- 00:21:16person towards some other sexual Target
- 00:21:20right so for example I may be working
- 00:21:23with a gay Target that I know is
- 00:21:25attracted to me I'm not going to have
- 00:21:27sex with my gay Target what I might do
- 00:21:30though is buy a male prostitute who does
- 00:21:32have sex with my gay Target and I can
- 00:21:35pick that prostitute and pay for that
- 00:21:36prostitute using US Dollars and I can
- 00:21:39make sure that I know who that
- 00:21:40prostitute is uh personally and
- 00:21:43physically because I know what my my
- 00:21:44target is attracted to but now what I I
- 00:21:47get all the benefits of being in control
- 00:21:49of this relationship without any of the
- 00:21:52compromises that come from physically
- 00:21:54engaging in the sexual aspects of a
- 00:21:56relationship does that make sense that
- 00:21:58makes a lot of sense that's so
- 00:22:00interesting and I'm so curious now like
- 00:22:03how what do they teach you how do they
- 00:22:05train you to become attractive or
- 00:22:07seductive what are some tips or tricks a
- 00:22:10lot of what CIA teaches us Franchesca is
- 00:22:12what you teach your followers if you can
- 00:22:14believe it right really they teach us
- 00:22:16they teach us Body Language they teach
- 00:22:18us micro Expressions they teach us uh
- 00:22:20physical Dynamics and they teach us
- 00:22:22non-verbal and verbal communication cues
- 00:22:25things that that trigger a predict able
- 00:22:28response in the psychology of the human
- 00:22:31brain because all human beings have one
- 00:22:34thing in common the way their brain is
- 00:22:37created skin color can be different
- 00:22:39accents can be different language can be
- 00:22:41different but the brain still operates
- 00:22:43the same way the cognitive functions of
- 00:22:45the brain are the same sometimes they
- 00:22:48are higher order processing sometimes
- 00:22:51they are lower order processing only in
- 00:22:53the event that you have a brain that is
- 00:22:55not neurotypical for example Autistic or
- 00:22:57some kind of retardation or whatever
- 00:22:59else only in a brain that is not
- 00:23:01neurotypical do you lose the ability to
- 00:23:03predict the outcomes of certain
- 00:23:05behavioral inputs so whether you're
- 00:23:07talking to a
- 00:23:09sagales male who has no no education or
- 00:23:13whether you're talking to a very
- 00:23:15well-educated British
- 00:23:16citizen you can still trigger the same
- 00:23:19behaviors if you use certain verbal and
- 00:23:22non-verbal cues can you give me some
- 00:23:25examples of some verbal or non-verbal cu
- 00:23:28use uh you're using one right now a
- 00:23:31smile is a very powerful non-verbal cue
- 00:23:33that is internationally recognized as a
- 00:23:36warm open Behavior similarly crossing
- 00:23:40the arms is the opposite of a smile
- 00:23:43right this is a very closed form of body
- 00:23:45language anywhere in the world if you
- 00:23:47cross your arms the non-verbal q that
- 00:23:50you're sending is a defensive Q right uh
- 00:23:53leaning towards somebody opening the
- 00:23:56chest and leaning towards somebody that
- 00:23:58is a a sign of energy now that energy
- 00:24:01can be communicated in different ways
- 00:24:03that's why sometimes people associate
- 00:24:05energy and power as being the same thing
- 00:24:07so they'll call it a power move to lean
- 00:24:10into somebody but in fact what you're
- 00:24:12doing is it's an energetic move you're
- 00:24:14applying energy to the situation and if
- 00:24:16you know how to predict the response of
- 00:24:18your target sometimes they'll respond by
- 00:24:20bringing more energy to you that's what
- 00:24:22happens in a romantic relationship I
- 00:24:24lean into somebody who's attracted to me
- 00:24:26and what do they do they lean into me
- 00:24:29but if it's a threatening situation or
- 00:24:30like a boss and coworker you might lean
- 00:24:33into somebody who then backs away
- 00:24:35because it's more of a conflict or a
- 00:24:37threat you mentioned the word power
- 00:24:39there and I wanted to ask you how can
- 00:24:41someone project power in an
- 00:24:45interaction there's a number of things
- 00:24:47to understand about power right power is
- 00:24:50measurable power is a real thing it's
- 00:24:52not just a mental thing it is a very
- 00:24:55real thing and the power center of the
- 00:24:57human body body is the chest that's
- 00:25:01where your heart is that's where your
- 00:25:02lungs are that's where the the spinal
- 00:25:05cord is the central nervous system all
- 00:25:09of those things if you were to call them
- 00:25:11something different take them out of the
- 00:25:12human body and put them in your house
- 00:25:15right what is the primary source of
- 00:25:17power in the house well it's the place
- 00:25:19where the electricity comes into the
- 00:25:21house the central circuit breaker what's
- 00:25:23the center for for uh hot water in your
- 00:25:26house the hot water heater what's the
- 00:25:28center CER for uh for actually conting
- 00:25:31energy into a food source it's in the
- 00:25:34kitchen where there's a stove and a
- 00:25:36microwave and an and an oven right so
- 00:25:38there are certain parts of the body that
- 00:25:41are centers of energy just like there's
- 00:25:43certain parts of the house that are
- 00:25:45centers of energy it just so happens
- 00:25:47that in the human body most of our
- 00:25:49centers exist in our chest and really
- 00:25:52our upper abdominal center right where
- 00:25:54the stomach and the digestive enzymes
- 00:25:55are so when you want to project power it
- 00:26:00really isn't anything more than
- 00:26:02presenting the center of energy on your
- 00:26:05body so you can do that with something
- 00:26:07as simple as posture just by lifting
- 00:26:10your shoulders up and back and putting
- 00:26:11your chest centered forward you can do
- 00:26:14that from a sitting position you can do
- 00:26:16that even from a sitting and leaning
- 00:26:18back position you can still open your
- 00:26:20chest and put out that Center of power
- 00:26:22this is what is so frustrating
- 00:26:24Franchesca we have a term in the United
- 00:26:25States called jocks I don't know if
- 00:26:28you've ever heard of the term jocks I
- 00:26:30have
- 00:26:31yeah one of the things that all of us
- 00:26:34remember hating about jocks in high
- 00:26:36school and college is that they would
- 00:26:39sit back in their chairs cocky with
- 00:26:41their chest wide open that was the power
- 00:26:44move that's the thing that made us so
- 00:26:46angry the thing is we didn't know that
- 00:26:48in college and high school we just
- 00:26:50thought that there was something about
- 00:26:51them what was bothering us was that they
- 00:26:55were projecting their power into the
- 00:26:57room while the rest of us we're leaning
- 00:26:58forward with our shoulders forward on
- 00:27:00our desk or sitting there with our arms
- 00:27:02crossed hiding our power right this is
- 00:27:05what happens when you see women
- 00:27:07especially women influencers talk about
- 00:27:10um demonstrating power as a female they
- 00:27:13usually tell you that you have to open
- 00:27:14up your chest in some way Throw your
- 00:27:15arms over your head you know stand with
- 00:27:18proper posture it's it's not about the
- 00:27:20spine it's about the chest it's about
- 00:27:21projecting all that energy forward so
- 00:27:24depending on how you want to show that
- 00:27:26power maybe you want to show that power
- 00:27:27by showing that uh like you're showing
- 00:27:30your spouse or your boyfriend or your
- 00:27:31girlfriend that you are a powerful
- 00:27:34partner you can do that by laying in bed
- 00:27:37with your shoulders back by sitting up
- 00:27:39in bed with your shoulders back by
- 00:27:40sitting at the table with your chest
- 00:27:42forward by doing by going out in public
- 00:27:45with your chest forward you can show
- 00:27:47power to the people you care about but
- 00:27:49you can also show power to a threat if
- 00:27:51you think about a Mugger or a criminal
- 00:27:54or somebody who's trying to take
- 00:27:56advantage of you there not trying to
- 00:27:58take advantage of you personally they're
- 00:28:00trying to find a weak person to take
- 00:28:03advantage of so often times one of the
- 00:28:06visual cues that a a criminal is looking
- 00:28:09for in people is that they are
- 00:28:12condensing their power they're covering
- 00:28:13their power because somebody who's
- 00:28:15projecting power is more likely aware
- 00:28:19prepared and and self-respecting enough
- 00:28:22that they may have self-defense tools on
- 00:28:24them but somebody who's cowering or
- 00:28:26clutching their their handbag or wrapped
- 00:28:29up in a jacket or whatever else that
- 00:28:30person is already subdued it's that
- 00:28:33person is already uh muting their
- 00:28:37power that's so interesting I feel like
- 00:28:39I've heard about this before for sure
- 00:28:41like they go after the vulnerable people
- 00:28:43they're they're not going to go after
- 00:28:45the people that show confidence and
- 00:28:47power yeah that makes so much sense and
- 00:28:50that's so interesting um the other thing
- 00:28:53I was thinking about is I imagine that
- 00:28:56as a spy you need to lie a lot and you
- 00:28:59need to be really good at it right do
- 00:29:02they train you how to lie or manipulate
- 00:29:05people and what are some of the things
- 00:29:07you've
- 00:29:08learned really I mean all of CIA
- 00:29:11training is training you how to lie
- 00:29:14that's that's the job the job is to
- 00:29:17pretend to be someone you're not in a
- 00:29:19place for a reason that isn't the real
- 00:29:21reason to do an act that isn't the Real
- 00:29:25ACT and then to escape
- 00:29:28with the secrets that you've stolen that
- 00:29:30were never supposed to be
- 00:29:32stolen right so all the other stuff all
- 00:29:35the shooting and the driving and you
- 00:29:37know water survival and how to jump out
- 00:29:39of planes and how to dress and how to
- 00:29:41put on a disguise all of that stuff is
- 00:29:43just fun extra stuff around the core of
- 00:29:48the skill which is really deception and
- 00:29:52deceit so you do have to become very
- 00:29:54good at lying one of the things that CIA
- 00:29:57actually looks for in its recruitment
- 00:29:59process is twofold one somebody has to
- 00:30:03be willing to lie there are lots of
- 00:30:06people who are not willing to lie there
- 00:30:07are lots of people who have a
- 00:30:09physiological response that prevents
- 00:30:11them from being comfortable lying so
- 00:30:15that's why there's so many psychological
- 00:30:16batteries so that you can find the
- 00:30:18people who are naturally gifted if you
- 00:30:20will uh at at lying because they're
- 00:30:23willing to lie they're naturally
- 00:30:25comfortable with lying and often times
- 00:30:27people with trauma are also people who
- 00:30:30are very comfortable at lying because
- 00:30:32let's be honest if you've had trauma as
- 00:30:34a
- 00:30:35child lies and deception became part of
- 00:30:38your core programming so that you could
- 00:30:41survive you had to say you were fine
- 00:30:45when you weren't you had to say you were
- 00:30:47happy when you weren't you had to sit
- 00:30:49there and smile when you felt like
- 00:30:50crying right that's part of what happens
- 00:30:53to you when you've got childhood trauma
- 00:30:55so the first thing that you need to that
- 00:30:57we need to understand about a good spy
- 00:30:59is that they have to be willing and
- 00:31:01capable physiologically of lying and
- 00:31:04then on top of that then that's where
- 00:31:06the training comes in where they train
- 00:31:09you how to sync your verbal and
- 00:31:11non-verbal cues so that I don't verbally
- 00:31:14tell you something that's untrue while
- 00:31:17physically showing you that I'm lying
- 00:31:19and then they also teach you how to
- 00:31:21refine your lies for example one of the
- 00:31:23core things that a skilled liar does
- 00:31:26that an unskilled liar doesn't do is
- 00:31:29skilled Liars know you have to practice
- 00:31:31your lie you have to learn how to think
- 00:31:34the lie and say the LIE before the
- 00:31:38moment of lying it's called a brain Body
- 00:31:41Connection right in this case the brain
- 00:31:43is connecting to the mouth and the
- 00:31:45tongue of the body so often times when
- 00:31:47unskilled Liars lie they stumble over
- 00:31:49their words or they double back or they
- 00:31:52they blubber or they look around they
- 00:31:54look confused they can't say it quickly
- 00:31:55and smoothly and we've all caught people
- 00:31:57in a lie because they weren't very
- 00:31:59smooth and confident with it whereas a
- 00:32:01skilled liar knows you have to practice
- 00:32:03the brain Body Connection of actually
- 00:32:05telling the lie so that's two different
- 00:32:08ways that a skilled liar can be
- 00:32:12developed what are some other
- 00:32:15manipulation tactics that they teach you
- 00:32:18about one of the biggest ones is uh
- 00:32:21something called primary motivations uh
- 00:32:24all human beings anybody with a with a
- 00:32:26neurotypical pink brain has four core
- 00:32:30motivations and those four core
- 00:32:32motivations break into an acronym that
- 00:32:33we call Rice r i c reward is the r
- 00:32:39ideology is the I coercion is the C and
- 00:32:44ego is the E so reward ideology coercion
- 00:32:48and ego are the four primary motivators
- 00:32:51that you can use to
- 00:32:52manipulate anyone Unfortunately they are
- 00:32:56also the same four core motivations that
- 00:32:58you and I have that allow others to
- 00:33:00motivate or manipulate us reward means
- 00:33:04that you're getting something whether
- 00:33:06you're getting a free gift or whether
- 00:33:09you're getting someone's attention or
- 00:33:11whether you're getting the opportunity
- 00:33:12to apply for a job if you're getting
- 00:33:15something then that's a reward motivator
- 00:33:19ideology means it's what you believe in
- 00:33:21people who believe a certain religion
- 00:33:23people who believe in a certain set of
- 00:33:25politics people who believe in the
- 00:33:28future and hope for the future people
- 00:33:29who believe in fatalistic thoughts
- 00:33:32that's all ideology and if you give
- 00:33:36somebody what they ideologically believe
- 00:33:38if you tell somebody or repeat or
- 00:33:40present or appear like you have the same
- 00:33:43ideology then they can manipulate you
- 00:33:46easier than if they appear as somebody
- 00:33:48with a different ideology I'm going to
- 00:33:50skip coercion because it's a different
- 00:33:52one I'm going to jump to Ego ego is one
- 00:33:55of the stronger ones because ego doesn't
- 00:33:58mean egotistical ego means how you want
- 00:34:02to be viewed by the people around you we
- 00:34:04all have an ego that's a basic
- 00:34:06psychological principle we all have an
- 00:34:09ego not all of us are egotistical
- 00:34:12however some of us are ego is to be in
- 00:34:14the background some of us our ego is to
- 00:34:17be very
- 00:34:18self-sacrificing some of us our ego is
- 00:34:20to be part of a larger Community or
- 00:34:23larger purpose so we actively take steps
- 00:34:26to fulfill our ego presence when
- 00:34:29somebody else knows what your ego is and
- 00:34:32they feed your ego you trust them and
- 00:34:36that gives them leverage to manipulate
- 00:34:38you this is what happens often times in
- 00:34:40churches when you hear about priests who
- 00:34:43abuse their their trust in their
- 00:34:45congregation when you hear about
- 00:34:46embezzlement by senior Executives in a
- 00:34:49company right they're taking advantage
- 00:34:51of the ego of the people that they know
- 00:34:53so that they can get something that they
- 00:34:56want the last of the four motivations
- 00:34:58was coercion the C in the rice acronym
- 00:35:02coercion is anytime somebody uses
- 00:35:04something negative against you this is
- 00:35:07where blackmail comes into play anything
- 00:35:09that makes you feel guilty or
- 00:35:11embarrassed or ashamed or afraid all of
- 00:35:15those those levers are considered
- 00:35:17coercion and coercion is a very powerful
- 00:35:20tool to get people to do what you want
- 00:35:21it's a very powerful tool to manipulate
- 00:35:24people but the difference between
- 00:35:26coercion and the other three fundamental
- 00:35:28motivators is that coercion can really
- 00:35:30only be used once once somebody makes
- 00:35:33you feel bad about you you never trust
- 00:35:36that person again once somebody holds a
- 00:35:38gun to your head you never get close
- 00:35:40enough for them to hold a gun to you
- 00:35:42again once somebody slaps your face you
- 00:35:44don't ever let them slap you again right
- 00:35:46you never trust them again whereas when
- 00:35:49somebody gives you a gift or when
- 00:35:51somebody says they believe in the same
- 00:35:53religion that you believe in or when
- 00:35:54somebody comes to you and they're part
- 00:35:56of the same community that that you're
- 00:35:58you're part of you will trust them again
- 00:36:00and again and
- 00:36:01again that's so interesting and I'm just
- 00:36:04thinking like how that applies to
- 00:36:06religious and Cults and like you know
- 00:36:09the level of manipulation that happens
- 00:36:11there I'm fascinated by that and I was
- 00:36:13just thinking about that but that's
- 00:36:15really fascinating um and think about
- 00:36:18the think about the role that the four
- 00:36:19core motivators play think about the
- 00:36:21role that Rice plays in abusive
- 00:36:24relationships why do women stay with
- 00:36:26abusive Partners why why do men stay
- 00:36:28with abusive women it's because some
- 00:36:31part of all four of those core
- 00:36:33motivations are present yes the man
- 00:36:35might be slapping her but he is also
- 00:36:38somehow feeding her ego or feeding her
- 00:36:41ideology yes the woman might call her
- 00:36:43man horrible horrible names she might
- 00:36:46even cheat on her man but what keeps him
- 00:36:48coming back something about the other
- 00:36:50three motivations right there's some
- 00:36:52element of all four that end up making
- 00:36:55abusive relationships a reality
- 00:37:00very fascinating um how do you know if
- 00:37:03someone's lying to you you know how how
- 00:37:07can you determine
- 00:37:10that first I want to say that when
- 00:37:12you're trying to catch a liar you cannot
- 00:37:15rely on any of the garbage that online
- 00:37:18influencers try to tell you you can't
- 00:37:20see it in the way that they're eyes look
- 00:37:22one way or the other you can't see it in
- 00:37:24their blink rates you can't see it
- 00:37:26because of some typical body language
- 00:37:28movement because every human body is
- 00:37:31different so people just react
- 00:37:34differently so you can't apply one
- 00:37:37Behavior to all people what you can do
- 00:37:41however is you can compare a baseline a
- 00:37:44baseline means if I know you Franchesca
- 00:37:48and we
- 00:37:49spend some time together let's just say
- 00:37:51four hours four hours is a pretty decent
- 00:37:53amount of time to get a baseline on a
- 00:37:55person's personal Behavior because
- 00:37:58if I'm with you for four hours you
- 00:38:00either like being around me or you don't
- 00:38:02like being around me if you do like
- 00:38:04being around me then I'm going to see
- 00:38:06that your energy stays High the whole
- 00:38:08time if you don't like being around me
- 00:38:11I'm going to see your energy change over
- 00:38:13those four hours so I can still get a
- 00:38:15baseline for you in both situations
- 00:38:18because you're either going to be high
- 00:38:19energy because you like being around me
- 00:38:21or I'm going to have seen your your
- 00:38:23energy change to a lower level of energy
- 00:38:26because it's draining to be around
- 00:38:28people you don't like but once you have
- 00:38:30a
- 00:38:31baseline that's how you can then start
- 00:38:33to test if people are lying to you
- 00:38:36because you can see a lie is a very
- 00:38:40energy intensive
- 00:38:41act it takes energy and focus and
- 00:38:45attention to detail to lie well remember
- 00:38:48we talked about non-verbal and verbal
- 00:38:50Communications have to be in sync that
- 00:38:53takes a lot of energy you have to be
- 00:38:55able to remember the lie that you told
- 00:38:58and you have to be able to repeat that
- 00:38:59lie consistently with a brain Body
- 00:39:01Connection that's very difficult right
- 00:39:04even gifted Liars even people who
- 00:39:07naturally are good at lying and who have
- 00:39:08lied a lot in their lives they still
- 00:39:10make a lot of predictable mistakes when
- 00:39:13you measure them against a
- 00:39:16baseline but if you don't have a
- 00:39:18baseline it's very difficult to tell if
- 00:39:20someone's lying to you there are certain
- 00:39:22tactics you can use with somebody who's
- 00:39:24brand new like a salesperson or uh a new
- 00:39:27date or a new boss there are certain
- 00:39:30things that you can try but they're not
- 00:39:32as reliable as the internet tries to
- 00:39:34make you believe what are some things
- 00:39:36you can try so for example uh let me
- 00:39:39give you a few different techniques
- 00:39:41there's something called the emotional
- 00:39:43question when you think somebody is
- 00:39:45lying to you you can test them with an
- 00:39:47emotional question because when you ask
- 00:39:49a question that triggers an emotion that
- 00:39:53emotion is natural right so I'll do it
- 00:39:55with you right now right so
- 00:39:58Franchesca tell me about one of your
- 00:40:01favorite memories as a little
- 00:40:04girl it was probably walking in the
- 00:40:07botanical gardens in Romania with my
- 00:40:10mother so I'm going to stop you right
- 00:40:12there okay for anybody who's watching
- 00:40:14right now they just saw your face do a
- 00:40:17few important things first they saw you
- 00:40:20actually look up and to the left which
- 00:40:25is the chronological order of how we
- 00:40:28read right it's a natural timeline you
- 00:40:31read from left to right you remember
- 00:40:33from back in time to the current day and
- 00:40:36that's what you were doing you were
- 00:40:37recalling a memory well when you recall
- 00:40:41a memory you physically reference like
- 00:40:44you read you look in the upper left hand
- 00:40:48corner and you reference to the right
- 00:40:49hand corner maybe you look up maybe you
- 00:40:51look down maybe you look straight ahead
- 00:40:53but you naturally reference from left to
- 00:40:55right because that's the way you were t
- 00:40:57to read that's the way you see a
- 00:40:58timeline that's the way everything
- 00:41:00happens in a western world right second
- 00:41:04they saw that you immediately had a
- 00:41:06reaction as soon as I asked the question
- 00:41:08you immediately had a reaction where you
- 00:41:10were trying you you were you could see
- 00:41:13on your face that it was positive you
- 00:41:15could see in your face that it was not
- 00:41:17threatening you could see your face
- 00:41:19relax right you could see all of these
- 00:41:22things happen so I had high confidence
- 00:41:24that you were telling me a true response
- 00:41:27because I asked you an emotional
- 00:41:28question okay I'm going to ask you
- 00:41:30another emotional question but I want
- 00:41:31you to lie to me all right I want you to
- 00:41:34lie to
- 00:41:36me what did it feel like the first time
- 00:41:39um a boy either cheated on you or lied
- 00:41:41to
- 00:41:42you it felt really good I was so happy
- 00:41:46about
- 00:41:48it so you could see as soon as I asked
- 00:41:51the question to you you could see the
- 00:41:52tension in your face as you tried not to
- 00:41:55display what you really felt because
- 00:41:57when I asked you the question you had a
- 00:42:00real memory you had a real feeling and
- 00:42:03that feeling was not a comfortable happy
- 00:42:05feeling so your face went
- 00:42:08flat when I asked you about a happy
- 00:42:10memory your face like came to life when
- 00:42:13I asked you about a negative memory and
- 00:42:15you lied about it your face was flat as
- 00:42:18you processed how you were going to lie
- 00:42:20about it it's very nuanced but for the
- 00:42:22people watching they can see it when you
- 00:42:25watch this play back you will see it
- 00:42:26yourself
- 00:42:27right you also didn't see your eyes
- 00:42:29referenced the same way that you
- 00:42:30actually referenced the memory that I
- 00:42:32asked you to reference you referenced a
- 00:42:34different way because as soon as you
- 00:42:36thought to look back in your own history
- 00:42:39you also tried to resist that feeling
- 00:42:42because you didn't want to show me the
- 00:42:44true feeling these are ways that anybody
- 00:42:47can test to see if a liar is lying to
- 00:42:49them because they can use an emotional
- 00:42:50question because the person who's lying
- 00:42:54cannot resist feeling the real emot
- 00:42:58it's a great trick if you think
- 00:42:59someone's cheating on you it's a great
- 00:43:01trick if you think you have a friend
- 00:43:02who's not really your friend it's a
- 00:43:05great trick if you think that there's
- 00:43:06somebody who's not telling you the truth
- 00:43:07about their past you can ask emotional
- 00:43:10questions and and see their response um
- 00:43:13definitely going to test this out this
- 00:43:14is incredibly interesting and I'm going
- 00:43:17to replay to see how I
- 00:43:20responded what other things have you
- 00:43:22learned about human nature as part of
- 00:43:25you know like your training what you you
- 00:43:27know what do people really want and
- 00:43:30need it's a great question right so
- 00:43:33there's a few things first at a very
- 00:43:36basic
- 00:43:37level there is a survival Instinct in
- 00:43:40human beings that's always present and
- 00:43:43because of that survival Instinct the
- 00:43:45natural first response for All Humans is
- 00:43:48to assess something new new people new
- 00:43:52information new food they assess it as
- 00:43:54either a threat or
- 00:43:57threat that's the first thing that
- 00:44:00that's just two options every time we
- 00:44:01meet a new person go to a new restaurant
- 00:44:04get in a new car the first thing that
- 00:44:06we're truly doing on a basic instinctive
- 00:44:09level is we are asking ourselves is this
- 00:44:11a threat to me or is this not a threat
- 00:44:13to me a threat to my reputation a threat
- 00:44:16to my ego a threat to my family a threat
- 00:44:17to my success a threat to my rep my uh
- 00:44:20my sense of
- 00:44:22purpose all people if they have Pink
- 00:44:26Matter and a neurotypical brain all of
- 00:44:28us look at every piece of new everything
- 00:44:33through this lens of threat or
- 00:44:34non-threat and then sometimes we make a
- 00:44:36decision very quickly in a few seconds
- 00:44:37oh this is not a threat I like this car
- 00:44:39this car feels good to me or I don't
- 00:44:41like this car the seat is uncomfortable
- 00:44:43and I can't see through the windows
- 00:44:45that's all threat response it's it's
- 00:44:47threatening my survival it's threatening
- 00:44:50my longterm success my ability to keep
- 00:44:53my family safe my ability to have a
- 00:44:55positive reputation right
- 00:44:57um so that's one thing that's really
- 00:44:59important very similar and very very
- 00:45:02much aligned with that is this
- 00:45:05understanding that all human beings are
- 00:45:07at their
- 00:45:08core pack animals we are tribal
- 00:45:12creatures We crave human connection we
- 00:45:16cannot be without it even when we think
- 00:45:19we don't want to be around people what
- 00:45:21we actually want is to be around people
- 00:45:26like us
- 00:45:27that's why introverts love to be with
- 00:45:29other introverts they just don't
- 00:45:31necessarily love to be with them talking
- 00:45:34but they love to sit next to another
- 00:45:36introvert on the couch they love to sit
- 00:45:38quietly in the same library and read in
- 00:45:40silence they love to be part of the same
- 00:45:43Facebook group which is why there's
- 00:45:44introvert Facebook groups so even people
- 00:45:48who think that they're antisocial or
- 00:45:50think that they want to be alone don't
- 00:45:51really want to be alone they crave
- 00:45:53connection with people who are like them
- 00:45:57and when you understand that all people
- 00:45:59are craving human connection it gives
- 00:46:01you a huge advantage over all the people
- 00:46:04out there who have not yet realized all
- 00:46:07people crave human connection so you can
- 00:46:10always connect with a person always no
- 00:46:13matter how prideful or wealthy or or
- 00:46:17ignorant or angry no matter what they're
- 00:46:21feeling there is an opportunity to
- 00:46:23connect with them if you understand that
- 00:46:25secretly deep down they are craving
- 00:46:28human connection from someone who they
- 00:46:31do not determine to be a threat to their
- 00:46:35survival right so survival Instinct and
- 00:46:38human connection go hand in hand and
- 00:46:40it's a huge benefit for anyone in
- 00:46:43business relationships or family life
- 00:46:46when they understand that what are some
- 00:46:48things someone can do to appear as
- 00:46:50nonthreatening so that they can connect
- 00:46:53with
- 00:46:54anyone that's a great question there's a
- 00:46:56number of things that you can keep in
- 00:46:57mind so first of all when you want to
- 00:46:59appear as
- 00:47:00non-threatening you should not
- 00:47:02demonstrate power so remember how we
- 00:47:05talked about the center of power being
- 00:47:06your chest you don't want to demonstrate
- 00:47:08that power because you never know if
- 00:47:10someone's going to see that power as a
- 00:47:12threat to their survival Instinct so
- 00:47:14instead you want to always subdue your
- 00:47:16power that doesn't mean you want to
- 00:47:17block yourself off if you block yourself
- 00:47:20off you can still appear as a threat it
- 00:47:22looks like you're hiding something or
- 00:47:23holding something back what you want to
- 00:47:25do is you want to mute your power roll
- 00:47:28those shoulders forward and slouch a
- 00:47:31little bit right and now people still
- 00:47:33see your energy center but they don't
- 00:47:35feel like you're hiding something and
- 00:47:37they also don't feel like you're overly
- 00:47:39aggressive so you want to always start
- 00:47:42when you meet a new person always start
- 00:47:44in an energy neutral position right
- 00:47:46something casual something where you're
- 00:47:48not featuring your strength and you're
- 00:47:50not featuring your
- 00:47:52suspicion and then the next step after
- 00:47:55you present yourself is neutral is
- 00:47:57something we call mirroring so look at
- 00:47:59the person across from you and go from
- 00:48:02your neutral position to mirroring
- 00:48:05whatever they're doing if they're
- 00:48:06leaning forward you should lean forward
- 00:48:09if they've got their arms crossed you
- 00:48:11cross your arms the reason is because
- 00:48:13there's an inherent bias in the human
- 00:48:16brain there's a cognitive bias to trust
- 00:48:20what looks the same the same as us so if
- 00:48:24I'm showing suspicion of you and you
- 00:48:27show suspicion of me cognitively that's
- 00:48:30a good thing I trust you more because
- 00:48:32you're Su
- 00:48:34too but if I'm suspicious of you and
- 00:48:37you're just a wide open textbook and
- 00:48:39your high energy that doesn't make me
- 00:48:41feel like we're the same but if you've
- 00:48:43ever seen two
- 00:48:45naturally uh um extroverted bubbly
- 00:48:48people meet especially for the first
- 00:48:51time and they're big as day and they're
- 00:48:52high energy and they're thr and they're
- 00:48:54speaking with their hands it just goes
- 00:48:55on and on and on because they're
- 00:48:57mirroring each other and it's just
- 00:48:59building more and more trust and more
- 00:49:01and more confidence that they're the
- 00:49:03same that they're going to get along and
- 00:49:05that's something that you can actually
- 00:49:07control when you want to when you meet a
- 00:49:10boss you can mirror your boss when you
- 00:49:13meet a client you can mirror a client
- 00:49:16when you're trying to have when you're
- 00:49:18trying to avoid an argument but you need
- 00:49:20to have a hard conversation with your
- 00:49:22partner you can mirror your partner and
- 00:49:25it's going to inherently ly create trust
- 00:49:28in their
- 00:49:29subconscious these tricks are so useful
- 00:49:32do you have any other spy tricks that

- 00:49:50unfair Advantage there are spy tactics
- 00:49:53that you can use for everything from how
- 00:49:54to shoot a gun to how to tie your shoes
- 00:49:58there's spy tactics for how you pack a
- 00:50:00bag there's spy tactics for what you eat
- 00:50:02and drink in the morning there's spy
- 00:50:04tactics for how you talk to somebody
- 00:50:06who's senior to you how do you talk to
- 00:50:08somebody who's younger than you how do
- 00:50:10you talk to a female how do you talk to
- 00:50:12a female that is attractive to you how
- 00:50:15do you talk to a female who is not
- 00:50:17attractive to you how do you talk to a
- 00:50:19female who is older than you and also
- 00:50:22attractive to you we can I mean there's
- 00:50:25tactics for all of it
- 00:50:27because at the end of the day what a spy
- 00:50:30is trying to do is achieve a very
- 00:50:32specific outcome and the only way that
- 00:50:35you can get your outcome is if you
- 00:50:38understand how to take advantage of the
- 00:50:41subconscious of your target so that you
- 00:50:44can deliberately move the conversation
- 00:50:46in a direction that benefits you that
- 00:50:48does not mean manipulate everyone what
- 00:50:52it means is when you are on a mission
- 00:50:55with a specific outcome that you're
- 00:50:57trying to achieve you take deliberate
- 00:51:00actions to trigger with high probability
- 00:51:04the outcome that you
- 00:51:06desire now I want to know how what
- 00:51:08tactics do you use to talk to a female
- 00:51:10that you're attracted
- 00:51:16to that's a great okay so if you're
- 00:51:19talking to a female that you're
- 00:51:20attractive to that you're attracted to
- 00:51:22but you do not want her to know that you
- 00:51:24are attracted to her it's called
- 00:51:26parallel conversation you don't talk to
- 00:51:29her really at all directly instead you
- 00:51:33talk to somebody who is parallel to her
- 00:51:36so if you want to approach a girl at a
- 00:51:37bar that you're attracted to but you
- 00:51:39don't want her to know that you're
- 00:51:41attracted to her don't talk to her when
- 00:51:44you walk up to the bar talk to the
- 00:51:46person sitting next to her at the bar
- 00:51:49maybe it's a boy maybe it's a girl maybe
- 00:51:51it's an old person maybe it's a young
- 00:51:53person maybe there's nobody else at the
- 00:51:54bar so you talk to the
- 00:51:57bartender but you do not show her that
- 00:52:00you're attracted to her because
- 00:52:02subconsciously what will happen is you
- 00:52:05will engage in a conversation that
- 00:52:07conversation will be between you and the
- 00:52:10person you're talking to which means two
- 00:52:12centers of energy start to generate
- 00:52:14shared energy that is going to naturally
- 00:52:17attract the Curiosity of the third
- 00:52:20person if you've ever found yourself
- 00:52:22listening in on someone's conversation
- 00:52:24when you were like why am I even doing
- 00:52:26this that's why it's because they
- 00:52:29started a conversation they created an
- 00:52:31energy center that your body couldn't
- 00:52:32resist because of survival Instinct what
- 00:52:36if they know something I don't know what
- 00:52:37if they talk about something I don't
- 00:52:38realize what if one of them is crazy
- 00:52:40your survival Instinct takes over and it
- 00:52:42forces you to listen in and that's why
- 00:52:44some of us try to not EES drop we like
- 00:52:47oh I shouldn't be listening to them but
- 00:52:48I keep listening to them I'm not even
- 00:52:49interested in what they're talking about
- 00:52:51but I keep in I keep listening to them
- 00:52:54so you it's called parallel conversation
- 00:52:57if you ever want to talk to a female
- 00:52:59that you are attracted to without
- 00:53:01letting her know that you're attracted
- 00:53:02to her is that a spy tactic don't let
- 00:53:04her know you're attracted to her or
- 00:53:07absolutely it absolutely is because in a
- 00:53:09in every relationship you have to
- 00:53:12consider the dominance in the
- 00:53:14relationships and The Leverage that you
- 00:53:17have over each other is what determines
- 00:53:18the dominance that you have so if you're
- 00:53:21trying to approach a Target remember in
- 00:53:23CIA speak we're not approaching a date
- 00:53:26we're approaching a target of interest
- 00:53:28that Target of interest is a bad guy
- 00:53:30usually they're a drug dealer they're a
- 00:53:33Smuggler of children they're the wife of
- 00:53:36a senior General right they're somebody
- 00:53:40important so you you want to never give
- 00:53:43them the leverage to have dominance over
- 00:53:47you right out of the gates because it's
- 00:53:48confusing to the relationship instead
- 00:53:50you have to find a way to approach them
- 00:53:52on equal footing if you if I talk to you
- 00:53:57you have the dominant position because
- 00:53:59I'm deferring my attention to you before
- 00:54:01you defer your attention to me but if I
- 00:54:04talk to somebody next to you and you
- 00:54:07then join the
- 00:54:08conversation I have dominance to you
- 00:54:11because you are showing me attention
- 00:54:14before I'm showing you attention now if
- 00:54:15you want to talk to somebody who you are
- 00:54:17attracted to then you do want to give
- 00:54:21them the benefit of dominance because
- 00:54:23what you want to do is you don't ever
- 00:54:25want to come across as a threat to them
- 00:54:28one of the ways that you can make sure
- 00:54:29that you don't trigger a threat response
- 00:54:31is by letting that person know they're
- 00:54:33in the dominant position so you would
- 00:54:35find a a way a reason a cause to
- 00:54:39approach them that is not threatening to
- 00:54:42them so you come up to them and maybe
- 00:54:44you ask them a question that's unrelated
- 00:54:46to them right you ask them you know do
- 00:54:49you know where the restroom is or you
- 00:54:51ask them if they've been to this you
- 00:54:52know if have you been to this bar before
- 00:54:54even as cliche as that is have you been
- 00:54:57here
- 00:54:58before strangers ask each other that all
- 00:55:01the time they askel they ask each other
- 00:55:04have you had this have you had coffee
- 00:55:05here before do they have good food here
- 00:55:08like have you ever had their Pizza like
- 00:55:10we say that stuff to waiters we say that
- 00:55:12stuff to bartenders we say that stuff to
- 00:55:13Baristas we say that stuff to to samex
- 00:55:16people in a in a social scenario so it's
- 00:55:19not actually cliche because it really is
- 00:55:22something that's used but the goal is to
- 00:55:24ask a question that's unrelated to the
- 00:55:27fact that you're
- 00:55:29attracted but what you're doing is
- 00:55:31you're you're creating a shared energy
- 00:55:34that is not threatening energy because
- 00:55:37if I come up to you and I say something
- 00:55:39like I'm lost and I'm looking for the
- 00:55:41nearest hamburger place you don't feel
- 00:55:43like I'm here to threaten your survival
- 00:55:46you feel like I'm some dumbass who's
- 00:55:48lost asking about a hamburger place in a
- 00:55:51wine bar that's all I need because now
- 00:55:54I'm I am closer to my objective of
- 00:55:56getting you to trust me as a non-threat
- 00:55:59when in fact I am a threat you see what
- 00:56:03I'm
- 00:56:05saying something else I want to ask you
- 00:56:08is how do you deal with fear and anxiety
- 00:56:11in high pressure situations as a spy do
- 00:56:14they look for people that are low
- 00:56:16anxiety you know this is a great a great
- 00:56:19question that shows some of the myth in
- 00:56:21Hollywood and the myth in the general
- 00:56:23Public's understanding of spies the best
- 00:56:26spies are not actually people who don't
- 00:56:28have anxiety the best spies are people
- 00:56:31with high anxiety and CIA actively
- 00:56:34recruits people with anxiety because
- 00:56:38anxious
- 00:56:39people are naturally more attentive they
- 00:56:43are naturally more suspicious they are
- 00:56:45naturally more observant they naturally
- 00:56:48have a stronger recollection right it's
- 00:56:51a superpower anxiety is a superpower in
- 00:56:54the world of Espionage however
- 00:56:57if it goes
- 00:56:58untrained it can be very damaging
- 00:57:01because anybody who has anxiety knows
- 00:57:03the spiral that comes out of anxiety so
- 00:57:06what CIA does is they teach us how to
- 00:57:09recover recuperate and
- 00:57:11maintain our energy reserves our mental
- 00:57:15health because they also know that
- 00:57:18they're tapping into our anxious our
- 00:57:19anxious
- 00:57:21Tendencies so that's another reason why
- 00:57:23sleep is so important that's another
- 00:57:25reason why diet not the food that you
- 00:57:27eat but the order of what you eat such
- 00:57:30as water first is so important that's
- 00:57:31why exercise is a priority for us
- 00:57:33because these are all things that
- 00:57:35counter and combat anxiety right
- 00:57:37sunlight or vitamin D combats anxiety
- 00:57:41routines and schedules combat anxiety
- 00:57:45when one of the things that my wife is
- 00:57:48also a CIA officer and my wife has
- 00:57:51general anxiety disorder like a clinical
- 00:57:54disorder and one of the things that
- 00:57:57keeps her
- 00:57:58sane is a routine that goes wherever she
- 00:58:02goes so she can always have hardboiled
- 00:58:06eggs anywhere in the world you can find
- 00:58:08eggs and you can boil them and you can
- 00:58:09eat them very very predictable for her
- 00:58:13anywhere in the world you can make some
- 00:58:15kind of hot tea right whether that is
- 00:58:18cinnamon tea or mint tea or green tea or
- 00:58:21Jasmine tea you can make it pretty much
- 00:58:23anywhere so steeping some kind of plant
- 00:58:26in hot water to make tea is another
- 00:58:28thing that she uses so that's part of
- 00:58:30her routine there isn't a day that goes
- 00:58:33by that she doesn't have some kind of
- 00:58:36hot drink first thing in the morning
- 00:58:38after she's had her water and when
- 00:58:40possible in most cases she also has
- 00:58:43either boiled eggs or or scrambled eggs
- 00:58:46or some kind of cooked egg it's a very
- 00:58:49predictable calming anti- anxietal
- 00:58:52routine that's amazing because it's such
- 00:58:54a simple thing that you can do you know
- 00:58:57just having a routine but it's so
- 00:58:59effective and one of the things that
- 00:59:01people don't realize is that 90% of your
- 00:59:05anxiety that you will feel during the
- 00:59:07day is actually determined in the first
- 00:59:11two hours of your day so if you start
- 00:59:14your day and there's a number there's a
- 00:59:17lot of changes or there's a lot of
- 00:59:18threats or there's a lot of confusion
- 00:59:21you've just determined with almost 90%
- 00:59:24certainty that you will have lots of
- 00:59:26anxiety throughout the day but if you
- 00:59:29can start the first two hours of your
- 00:59:31day in a low anxiety state then you can
- 00:59:35present and and uh protect your energy
- 00:59:38reserves for the rest of the day and
- 00:59:40that's something that a lot of people
- 00:59:41get wrong they think that they should
- 00:59:43start their day with caffeine and
- 00:59:46checking their phone and catching up on
- 00:59:48the news and all these things that cause
- 00:59:49them anxiety and all they're doing is
- 00:59:51they're ruining the rest of their day
- 00:59:53when instead if you just set an alarm on
- 00:59:56your phone for when you can pick up your
- 00:59:58phone don't set an alarm for when to
- 01:00:01wake up set an alarm for when you can
- 01:00:03pick up your phone so then you wake up
- 01:00:05you can't even touch your phone so you
- 01:00:07can't go looking for things that make
- 01:00:09you anxious instead you go for a walk
- 01:00:12drink some water eat your eggs drink
- 01:00:15your tea read a magazine read your
- 01:00:17favorite book and then your phone alarm
- 01:00:19goes off and then you can check the news
- 01:00:22completely transforms the level of
- 01:00:24anxiety that you feel throughout the day
- 01:00:27that's so useful and if you are in a
- 01:00:31high pressure high anxiety situation
- 01:00:34what is something that you use to calm
- 01:00:36down your nerves so I mean this is where
- 01:00:39it really gets to a lot of the same
- 01:00:41cognitive behavioral therapy that
- 01:00:42anybody with anxiety has experienced
- 01:00:44before right there's breathing
- 01:00:46techniques like box breathing right
- 01:00:49there's there's also breathing
- 01:00:50techniques that intentionally
- 01:00:52hyperventilate or hyper oxygenate your
- 01:00:54bloodstream because all that extra
- 01:00:57oxygen in your bloodstream will go into
- 01:00:59your brain and help you quickly
- 01:01:01cognitively rationalize your way through
- 01:01:04the emotional feelings that you're
- 01:01:06having uh there's also a technique that
- 01:01:08CIA calls stress
- 01:01:11inoculation which means that you
- 01:01:13intentionally find moments of stress in
- 01:01:15a safe environment you intentionally
- 01:01:18find moments of stress in order to
- 01:01:21inoculate your body with what that
- 01:01:24stress feels like so that when you feel
- 01:01:26the stress again it's not the first time
- 01:01:30do you remember when we were talking
- 01:01:31about the recruitment process for CIA we
- 01:01:34were talking about how they put you
- 01:01:35through role plays and they put you
- 01:01:36through scenarios a big part of why they
- 01:01:38do that is because they are testing
- 01:01:40whether you have been inoculated to
- 01:01:43stress and confusion or whether those
- 01:01:45moments will cause you to freeze and
- 01:01:48there are some people who freeze because
- 01:01:50they've never been inoculated to that
- 01:01:51kind of stress this is what happens when
- 01:01:53you have somebody who you know grew up
- 01:01:55in a quiet home because they were a
- 01:01:57single child and then they end up going
- 01:02:00to a birthday party at another home
- 01:02:02where they have six children and you can
- 01:02:04see that child Frozen like what is this
- 01:02:07chaos happening All Around Me they've
- 01:02:09never been inoculated to that much noise
- 01:02:11that much activity that much chaos so
- 01:02:15you can always inoculate yourself as an
- 01:02:17anxiety uh a person of anxiety or an
- 01:02:21anxious person you can always inoculate
- 01:02:22yourself to the stressors that other
- 01:02:25people experience in a safe environment
- 01:02:28you can ask your friend to take you to a
- 01:02:30concert you can ask your friend to take
- 01:02:32you to a busy restaurant you can ask
- 01:02:34your friend to pretend they're a boy
- 01:02:36flirting with you you can ask your
- 01:02:38friend to pretend they're a girl
- 01:02:40rejecting you you can do all of these
- 01:02:42things so that you experience the stress
- 01:02:46and you learn the feelings and you cope
- 01:02:48and process the anxiety before it
- 01:02:51actually
- 01:02:52happens that's extremely useful is
- 01:02:55sounds to be like exposure therapy yes
- 01:02:58that's exactly that that is the
- 01:03:00commercial term for what the military
- 01:03:02and government call stress inoculation
- 01:03:04okay and my last question to you is what
- 01:03:08advice would you give someone that wants
- 01:03:10to become a CIA
- 01:03:12spy I would have I would say two things
- 01:03:15first thank you for wanting to defend
- 01:03:17our country because we need strong
- 01:03:21capable courageous people to start
- 01:03:24working and become CL officers at
- 01:03:27CIA the second thing I would say is you
- 01:03:30must understand that once you take that
- 01:03:33path you are no longer the priority your
- 01:03:37family is not the priority your children
- 01:03:40your mother your father your spouse none
- 01:03:42of those people are the priority the
- 01:03:44priority becomes the the protection of
- 01:03:47American National Security the Primacy
- 01:03:50of American power becomes the primary
- 01:03:53objective so you will leave your family
- 01:03:56you will lie to your family you will
- 01:03:58hurt your own body in pursuit of
- 01:04:02whatever the policy maker and the
- 01:04:04president decide is principle to
- 01:04:08maintaining American Primacy that might
- 01:04:10be a big deal that might be something
- 01:04:12like a war in Ukraine or a war in
- 01:04:15Afghanistan or it might be something
- 01:04:18that you think is Trivial like oil
- 01:04:20prices or rice prices or the trade of
- 01:04:23soybeans but your opinion will never
- 01:04:25matter again because once you sign up
- 01:04:28for that task you are a tool for
- 01:04:31American National
- 01:04:32Security so you have to be willing to
- 01:04:35basically let go of of everything of
- 01:04:39everything very interesting Andy thank
