my name is Dina Davis and I am the VP of

networks I really in high school I just
  • 00:01:17
really liked math a lot I I really
  • 00:01:20
enjoyed it I took all the advanced level
  • 00:01:23
courses and I didn't really know what to
  • 00:01:26
do with that so I went to the career
  • 00:01:30
counselor at my school and I said you
  • 00:01:33
know I'm I'm really good at math I
  • 00:01:34
really like it I I don't know what to do
  • 00:01:36
and and he said well you should be a
  • 00:01:38
math teacher um and 17-year-old self was
  • 00:01:43
pretty naive and thought okay I guess
  • 00:01:45
    that's what I should
  • 00:01:47
do so I went off to University to become
  • 00:01:50
    a math
  • 00:01:54
teacher and at that point I was like
  • 00:01:56
well now I really don't know what I'm
  • 00:01:57
going to do I'm just getting a math
  • 00:01:58
degree here but as it happened in my
  • 00:02:01
third year of University I took my first
  • 00:02:04
Computing course and within two or three
  • 00:02:07
classes uh of that first class I was
  • 00:02:10
like this is amazing I'm like I love
  • 00:02:12
this and so I ended up uh working for
  • 00:02:18
    the Canadian
  • 00:02:19
government and that was my introduction
  • 00:02:22
to cryptography and as it happens the
  • 00:02:25
job was to implement the Bluetooth
  • 00:02:29
protocol in C++ for the research team so
  • 00:02:34
they could evaluate it as part of AES to
  • 00:02:37
see if it was Secure or not so for me I
  • 00:02:41
    just found that security and
  • 00:02:43
    cryptography specifically was this
  • 00:02:45
perfect mix of real world problem
  • 00:02:50
    solving and Mathematics and computer
  • 00:02:53
science all combined into one ball of
  • 00:02:56
Happiness um and so that really kicked
  • 00:02:59
off my trajectory into a more security
  • 00:03:03
    focused
  • 00:03:05
    [Music]
  • 00:03:10
career I went back to University to
  • 00:03:13
finish my last year and so I I did my
  • 00:03:15
masters in in cryptography uh but then I
  • 00:03:18
was you know looking for a job in 2001
  • 00:03:22
or 2002 that wasn't a good time to look
  • 00:03:25
for a job in Tech uh it was right after
  • 00:03:27
the bubble had burst and I was having
  • 00:03:30
such a hard time finding uh finding a
  • 00:03:32
job uh but I had gone to a little
  • 00:03:35
    security conference in the summertime
  • 00:03:36
and I had met some people from
  • 00:03:38
    Blackberry that was exciting cuz
  • 00:03:39
Blackberry was you know not even quite a
  • 00:03:42
big thing yet in at that time um so for
  • 00:03:46
the next eight years I worked on the
  • 00:03:48
bleeding edge of mobile security at
  • 00:03:51
Blackberry on the security team and it
  • 00:03:54
it was amazing it it was an amazing ride
  • 00:03:57
I am so glad I got to do that
  • 00:04:02
    [Music]
  • 00:04:04
I had gone to a um it's called think
  • 00:04:07
about math and it's this program that
  • 00:04:08
the University of waterl runs for girls
  • 00:04:11
in grade nine and they bring them in and
  • 00:04:13
they and they have them meet all these
  • 00:04:16
women who have graduated with math
  • 00:04:17
degrees and and we talk to them about
  • 00:04:20
you know what we actually do as a job to
  • 00:04:22
to show them what kind of careers they
  • 00:04:24
could have and while I was there um I I
  • 00:04:27
met a lady named Kim Trump and her title
  • 00:04:30
was VP of R&D and right before the event
  • 00:04:34
kind of started I ran up to her and I
  • 00:04:35
said Kim I want to talk to you after
  • 00:04:39
this don't leave okay because um I want
  • 00:04:41
to do what you do someday so I would
  • 00:04:45
really like to talk to you about how you
  • 00:04:46
got there and as it turned out like
  • 00:04:49
maybe 2 or 3 weeks later we we had a
  • 00:04:52
lunch and she convinced me to come work
  • 00:04:54
for her where I then got to run the
  • 00:04:57
whole R&D team for her and I am now the
  • 00:04:59
VP of R&D at arctic wolf so it it was
  • 00:05:02
amazing right had I not had that meeting
  • 00:05:05
uh you know who knows where I would be
  • 00:05:07
    probably still doing something
  • 00:05:08
interesting but um it's all about you
  • 00:05:11
know getting out there and and not being
  • 00:05:13
shy to talk to people right and building
  • 00:05:16
your network it's also why I do
  • 00:05:18
everything I can to connect people as
  • 00:05:20
much as I can because I know how
  • 00:05:21
valuable it was for me uh in my career
  • 00:05:24
uh that I just you know giving people
  • 00:05:26
the intro you don't have to do a lot for
  • 00:05:27
them you just have to give them the int
  • 00:05:29
to the next spot and then they can they
  • 00:05:31
can do what they can do
  • 00:05:35
    [Music]
  • 00:05:42
    [Music]
  • 00:05:46
right you don't need to know how to code
  • 00:05:48
to get into security sure it'll help you
  • 00:05:51
it's going to give you again like you're
  • 00:05:52
saying a different perspective as you
  • 00:05:54
come in but there's so many things and
  • 00:05:57
so many easy starts to go into it right
  • 00:06:00
so often times you can get like a
  • 00:06:01
library card and then get LinkedIn
  • 00:06:03
learning and you can start taking
  • 00:06:05
courses from LinkedIn that way there's
  • 00:06:08
so many courses online my favorite thing
  • 00:06:10
to tell people is to just start
  • 00:06:12
listening to the podcasts because it's
  • 00:06:13
the easiest thing to do and it starts to
  • 00:06:16
immerse yourself in that world and
  • 00:06:17
you'll start to see you know which
  • 00:06:19
stories that come out on these podcasts
  • 00:06:22
you get more most interested in right
  • 00:06:24
which might point you to the direction
  • 00:06:25
of of where in cyber security you want
  • 00:06:28
to go so I think there's a lot of
  • 00:06:30
    entry-level positions that people can
  • 00:06:31
can come into and we have such a deficit
  • 00:06:34
in you know having enough talent to fill
  • 00:06:37
all these roles I think it's a amazing
  • 00:06:41
    opportunity impostor syndrome is just
  • 00:06:44
that syndrome and you know I would often
  • 00:06:48
feel like I wasn't quite good enough cuz
  • 00:06:49
I had two math degrees and not a
  • 00:06:51
computer science degree right that I
  • 00:06:54
didn't know computer science as well as
  • 00:06:55
everyone else that I was working with
  • 00:06:58
but I just brought that different
  • 00:07:00
perspective I knew how to code but I
  • 00:07:02
also had all this great Rich experience
  • 00:07:05
in cyber security that many of my
  • 00:07:07
co-workers didn't have at the time so I
  • 00:07:10
think it's really just believing in
  • 00:07:11
yourself and and going going for it
  • 00:07:14
right go for what you believe in
