00:00:09
what's up adhd crew
00:00:10
if you're currently a student or you're
00:00:12
thinking of becoming a student in the
00:00:14
near future
00:00:15
i want to give you a little bit of
00:00:17
insight into how i survived
00:00:18
as a student and i want to save you the
00:00:20
suffering that i had to go through to
00:00:22
figure out how to organize myself more
00:00:24
efficiently
00:00:25
so i'm going to show you my study
00:00:27
practices my organization techniques as
00:00:29
well
00:00:30
as some of the things i wish i did and
00:00:32
just the general day-to-day living
00:00:33
and adulting if you like to just look
00:00:35
after myself and take care of my
00:00:38
responsibilities
00:00:39
so let's begin
00:00:45
i think before i get into anything about
00:00:47
learning an organization
00:00:48
i need to get this out there first it's
00:00:50
extremely important
00:00:52
that you get some kind of support right
00:00:56
so even if you're not diagnosed you
00:00:58
still want to look for some kind of
00:01:00
mentorship or support group
00:01:02
somebody that you can speak to and i
00:01:04
wish i did this
00:01:05
much much sooner instead of waiting a
00:01:07
year or two years into my course
00:01:09
because i would have got much better
00:01:11
grades and i would have been happier
00:01:12
overall
00:01:13
i know for a lot of people with adhd
00:01:15
it's extremely difficult to take
00:01:16
action and actually make things happen
00:01:18
and take responsibility
00:01:20
because i've been there myself in the
00:01:22
back of my mind i knew full well that i
00:01:24
should be doing this
00:01:25
and speaking to people and sorting out
00:01:27
my stuff but i just put it off i
00:01:28
procrastinated
00:01:30
please don't do this believe me the
00:01:32
longer you go without support and
00:01:34
helping yourself
00:01:35
and talking to somebody the worst things
00:01:37
you're gonna get and you're gonna end up
00:01:39
playing catch up for the rest of
00:01:40
the semester and you're going to fall
00:01:42
behind so i don't care who it is
00:01:44
speak to your lecturer speak to a friend
00:01:46
a colleague
00:01:47
just find somebody that can refer you to
00:01:49
a support system of some kind so they
00:01:52
can get
00:01:52
somebody to sit with you and help you
00:01:54
out and you can talk about
00:01:56
your issues that you face with studying
00:02:02
the next thing i want to touch on is the
00:02:04
study environment
00:02:06
environment can make or break your
00:02:07
experience and your ability to stay
00:02:09
focused so i encourage you to experiment
00:02:12
with different
00:02:13
study setups and environments see what
00:02:16
helps you the best
00:02:17
now for me i needed complete solitude in
00:02:19
order to focus and concentrate on my
00:02:21
studies
00:02:22
so the campus library although it was
00:02:25
the right environment a lot of the times
00:02:27
it was too distracting
00:02:29
because it was just flooded with other
00:02:31
students and
00:02:32
the noise was extremely distracting and
00:02:35
i just couldn't
00:02:36
really focus right so it was kind of
00:02:38
counterproductive
00:02:39
the only times i could go to the library
00:02:41
and actually get some work done
00:02:43
was in the off peak times or during the
00:02:45
evening where the students were off out
00:02:47
somewhere
00:02:48
so for me it was rather tricky and i had
00:02:50
to do a lot of
00:02:52
introspection to see what worked best
00:02:54
for me some of you may prefer to study
00:02:56
at home
00:02:57
and that was an option for me for a
00:02:58
while as well because at home
00:03:01
you have the ability to isolate yourself
00:03:03
further
00:03:04
and you've got the added comfort and
00:03:06
safety of your own
00:03:07
nest but there is a caveat i think when
00:03:10
you study at home you've got the
00:03:12
distractions of things like netflix
00:03:14
it's so easy to just jump in bed and
00:03:17
watch movies and
00:03:18
play video games it's almost too
00:03:20
comfortable
00:03:21
so again this is what it boils down to
00:03:23
is finding that environment that you can
00:03:26
mimic the workplace so that you take it
00:03:28
seriously
00:03:29
so the bottom line i would say is create
00:03:32
a dedicated
00:03:33
go-to study place that's orderly clean
00:03:36
and tidy
00:03:37
keep the clutter to a minimum and any
00:03:40
clutter
00:03:40
and unnecessary distractions you need to
00:03:42
eliminate as much as possible
00:03:44
some of you might prefer to study with
00:03:46
some kind of music in which
00:03:47
case i would recommend doing so if it
00:03:50
helps you and perhaps getting yourself
00:03:51
some noise cancelling headphones
00:03:54
this was something that i used a lot in
00:03:56
order to block out external sound
00:03:58
but most of the time i didn't even
00:03:59
listen to music because for me i
00:04:01
personally prefer
00:04:02
complete silence so instead of listening
00:04:04
to music i'd have silicon earplugs
00:04:07
with the headphones on top so that i had
00:04:09
complete silence
00:04:10
really helpful for when i wanted to go
00:04:12
to the library in the day and a half to
00:04:13
get
00:04:14
some work done
00:04:19
okay so now you have to have the right
00:04:21
tools to help you to stay on track
00:04:23
in my opinion the most beneficial way
00:04:25
for adhd people to learn
00:04:27
is by things being very visual easy to
00:04:30
access
00:04:31
and highly memorable so having tools
00:04:34
that can allow you to take pride in
00:04:35
organizing yourself
00:04:37
as well as giving you consistent
00:04:38
reminders of your responsibilities
00:04:40
is crucial to name some of the tools
00:04:42
that i invested in
00:04:44
firstly i used a physical calendar that
00:04:46
i put on my
00:04:48
wall and i would write down important
00:04:50
events and deadlines and circle them so
00:04:52
that i could see
00:04:53
every day where i needed to invest
00:04:56
my time but don't stop there i think
00:04:58
it's important to also
00:05:00
utilize smartphones these days by using
00:05:03
apps such as google calendar app that's
00:05:05
what i use so
00:05:06
effectively i had two sets of calendars
00:05:10
one i could see every day at home and
00:05:12
one that i could carry around with me
00:05:14
wherever i went that would also allow me
00:05:16
to have alarms and reminders
00:05:18
as well so i really recommend you spend
00:05:20
some time out of your day setting up
00:05:22
some kind of schedule
00:05:24
other things i used was white boards and
00:05:26
notice boards
00:05:27
again these can be bought very cheaply
00:05:29
and they can be very
00:05:30
effective at seeing your goals and
00:05:33
things that need to get done
00:05:35
keeping all my bedroom door was one of
00:05:36
my go-to methods
00:05:38
because every time i had to leave the
00:05:39
room it would be right there in front of
00:05:41
me and i couldn't really escape it
00:05:43
i also used color-coded document files
00:05:46
things like these are great and they
00:05:49
allow you to
00:05:50
put in multiple documents where you can
00:05:52
just put a little tag at the top and
00:05:54
write the subject
00:05:55
the topic whatever you want whatever
00:05:57
works for you best
00:05:58
and that way you can easily access the
00:06:01
right parts
00:06:02
of your course that you're trying to
00:06:04
study and one final thing i recommend
00:06:06
for organization
00:06:07
is invest in some kind of filing cabinet
00:06:09
or storage boxes
00:06:11
you can buy plastic containers that are
00:06:13
very handy to store away
00:06:15
your documents and your paperwork great
00:06:17
options for students on a budget
00:06:19
and it allows you to make things much
00:06:21
more accessible
00:06:22
and perhaps you might even want to label
00:06:23
the drawers so that you can see exactly
00:06:25
what's inside
00:06:26
so the bottom line is the more visible
00:06:28
and memorable things are
00:06:29
the easier it's going to be for you to
00:06:31
stay on track you don't have to spend a
00:06:33
lot of money either
00:06:34
a lot of universities offer discount
00:06:36
cards on the first day or the opening
00:06:38
day
00:06:38
so have a look around don't be too
00:06:40
impulsive but you really do want to
00:06:42
invest in these things because it's
00:06:44
going to change the game
00:06:49
okay so on to the learning aspect in my
00:06:51
experience people with adhd
00:06:52
learn very similarly to how children
00:06:55
learn
00:06:56
it's usually through a combination of
00:06:59
connecting emotions with
00:07:00
images and sounds one of my favorite
00:07:03
ways to learn is through
00:07:04
video i often find that youtube is
00:07:06
incredible source of education
00:07:09
and more often not you can get the
00:07:10
answers you're looking for
00:07:12
much more quickly than you can through
00:07:14
university
00:07:15
nowadays a lot of universities offer
00:07:17
lecture slides that
00:07:18
are very visual and you can easily
00:07:20
download them on the university
00:07:22
intranet website and if you can i'd
00:07:25
consider printing out these lectures
00:07:26
lines
00:07:27
and keeping them in a folder so that you
00:07:29
can look through them and annotate
00:07:31
make notes and so on so when it comes to
00:07:33
studying i do recommend
00:07:35
you try to make it visual and try to
00:07:37
make it fun
00:07:38
for example you could try making
00:07:39
flashcards if you can connect an
00:07:41
image to a certain academic concept
00:07:44
or an acronym where you have letters
00:07:47
that mean different things and make up a
00:07:49
phrase
00:07:50
and i find overall this is a much more
00:07:52
effective way to retain the information
00:07:54
now another thing you could try is
00:07:55
taking a dictaphone into the lecture or
00:07:58
class
00:07:59
because in my opinion when you're there
00:08:01
in class it can be very hard to focus
00:08:03
entirely on the lecture and what's being
00:08:06
said especially if it's noisy the
00:08:08
students are
00:08:09
chit-chatting it's very distracting so i
00:08:12
believe that it helps a lot to
00:08:14
revisit that lecture by having a
00:08:16
recording there because sometimes when
00:08:17
you're studying you miss out on key
00:08:19
explanations that the teacher says
00:08:22
that can be very helpful to your
00:08:24
understanding of the subject so
00:08:26
try that out try listening back over the
00:08:28
lecture and
00:08:29
taking notes as you go along i think
00:08:31
it's more important to be present
00:08:33
in lectures rather than writing every
00:08:35
word down word for word
00:08:37
because it's much harder to keep up in
00:08:39
my opinion you don't really take in the
00:08:41
information because you're too focused
00:08:43
on trying to write
00:08:44
all the words down instead of actually
00:08:46
taking on board the meaning of it
00:08:48
so i think it's better to record it and
00:08:50
listen to it and perhaps just make
00:08:52
general notes and highlight important
00:08:55
pieces of information
00:08:56
using color highlighters in regards to
00:08:58
learning in the classroom
00:09:00
i recommend that you position yourself
00:09:02
centrally so that way you can
00:09:04
isolate your center of attention and you
00:09:07
can minimize
00:09:08
other distractions such as other
00:09:10
students talking or looking out the
00:09:11
window
00:09:12
right you want to make it as hard as
00:09:13
possible for you to look anywhere else
00:09:15
and this goes for the people that you're
00:09:18
around perhaps you want to avoid
00:09:20
other students that don't really take
00:09:21
the education that seriously
00:09:23
or they distract you too much by talking
00:09:26
get involved with other people who
00:09:27
take the course really seriously because
00:09:30
they're gonna help you to stay motivated
00:09:32
on
00:09:32
your studies and finally when it comes
00:09:34
to studying
00:09:36
i want you to try blocking out some time
00:09:39
so you know spending maybe 20 minutes
00:09:40
out of your day to just make a little
00:09:42
schedule on your google calendar
00:09:44
app or on your physical calendar or
00:09:47
perhaps even
00:09:47
just drawing one on paper from scratch
00:09:50
and putting it up somewhere really
00:09:51
visible
00:09:52
but if you struggle to stay on track
00:09:54
with your study periods
00:09:55
try using the pomodoro technique that's
00:09:58
a great little way to
00:10:00
study in short bursts of time and it
00:10:02
allows you to have
00:10:03
frequent breaks in between so that you
00:10:06
don't get too overwhelmed and you don't
00:10:08
zone out too much
00:10:10
it's entirely up to you how often you
00:10:12
take a break but i
00:10:13
think the standard is around 20 minutes
00:10:15
of study with a five minute break
00:10:17
and you repeat that over and over for
00:10:20
however long your study period
00:10:21
is at the end of the day you have to do
00:10:24
what works for you you have to work with
00:10:26
your adhd
00:10:27
instead of trying to follow a model that
00:10:29
just doesn't work with you
00:10:30
it's like trying to shove a cube into a
00:10:33
circular hole
00:10:34
it's not going to work and if you're
00:10:35
struggling to get motivated to start on
00:10:37
something
00:10:38
i recommend you just get on youtube for
00:10:41
10 minutes set an alarm and watch some
00:10:44
videos on the subject
00:10:46
you're trying to study because i find
00:10:48
that sometimes that's all i needed to
00:10:50
get the ball rolling
00:10:56
and the final stage is just day-to-day
00:10:58
living what worked for me really well
00:11:00
was giving everything a home
00:11:02
right so as an example i would say keep
00:11:05
your laptop keep your books
00:11:07
your pencil case etc all in your
00:11:09
backpack and keep that backpack
00:11:12
in the same place in your room every day
00:11:14
so that way you can just pick it up and
00:11:16
go
00:11:17
and you know exactly where your
00:11:18
essentials are it's all about creating
00:11:21
habits
00:11:22
right the more often you implement these
00:11:23
techniques it's going to become second
00:11:25
nature
00:11:26
so when it comes to other things like
00:11:27
meal preparation and food
00:11:29
i would say just shop simply you know
00:11:32
buy budget-friendly
00:11:33
foods and throw things together in a
00:11:36
plastic container to take with you it
00:11:38
can be very cheap
00:11:39
and you can just season it or use sauces
00:11:41
to give it a bit more flavor
00:11:43
because this way if cooking is too much
00:11:44
of a stress for you
00:11:46
you can eat meals that are more easy to
00:11:48
put together and you don't have to
00:11:49
resort to buying
00:11:51
junk food you don't have to waste your
00:11:52
money on these unfilling
00:11:54
meal deals and honestly i think it's
00:11:56
more important to have whole foods
00:11:58
don't fall into the trap of buying junk
00:12:00
food because it's going to harm your
00:12:01
mental health it's going to give you
00:12:03
crappy performance one of my favorite
00:12:05
meals was just jack a potato with tuna
00:12:08
and a lot of these ingredients can
00:12:10
cost literally pence it can cost you
00:12:12
maybe one or two pounds
00:12:14
for a couple of meals something i also
00:12:16
did was
00:12:17
investing in a small mini refrigerator
00:12:20
that i could keep in my room because i
00:12:22
found it easier
00:12:23
to differentiate my food from my
00:12:25
roommates
00:12:26
now if you're a student or you have been
00:12:28
a student you're probably aware that
00:12:30
living with other people can get a bit
00:12:31
ugly sometimes
00:12:33
if people don't clean up after
00:12:34
themselves this might be you
00:12:36
if you have adhd and you're a bit messy
00:12:38
so i think keeping your own stuff
00:12:40
in your own place is going to be easier
00:12:42
for you to avoid
00:12:44
any confrontation the next tip i would
00:12:46
say is minimize your belongings
00:12:48
right you really don't need that much
00:12:49
stuff and honestly the more stuff you
00:12:51
have cluttering out your room
00:12:53
the harder it's going to be mentally to
00:12:55
stay organized
00:12:56
everywhere else so perhaps keep a simple
00:12:59
wardrobe that's not too
00:13:00
much effort to stay on top of in terms
00:13:02
of washing and ironing
00:13:04
and perhaps just purge stuff lying
00:13:06
around that you don't need a one final
00:13:08
tip
00:13:08
limit how much you party alcohol and
00:13:11
drugs is a one-way ticket to spiraling
00:13:13
out of control
00:13:14
getting into the wrong crowd and just
00:13:16
worsening your adhd symptoms
00:13:18
okay so you want to be kind to yourself
00:13:20
you want to treat your body and mind
00:13:21
