00:00:00
love me love me say that you love me
00:00:04
fool me fool me go on and fool
00:00:13
me oh wow F congratulations you got a
00:00:16
broken iMac you replace the motherboard
00:00:17
with one of those Chinese boards that
00:00:19
convert the display to an HDMI One
00:00:22
display technology in the iMac G5 is so
00:00:23
old my grandma has more resolution in it
00:00:25
the backlight sucks this video is
00:00:27
terrible is this what you try to pass as
00:00:29
something original on YouTube now so I
00:00:32
really got into it when in the intro I
00:00:34
said this has no apple Parts in it I was
00:00:37
serious and it really has a resolution
00:00:39
of 2560 x600 a refresh rate of 240 HZ
00:00:43
and it's not just a display because that
00:00:46
would be boring this is a thing that I
00:00:49
built for a very specific use case but
00:00:51
I'll tell you about that later and uh
00:00:54
I'd rather show you and tell you what it
00:00:56
is because it's kind of difficult to
00:00:57
explain so you connect it to whatever
00:00:59
you want using one USBC cable that was
00:01:02
my MacBook Pro there but let's use my
00:01:04
steam deck here for a change which is
00:01:06
actually the intended thing that I build
00:01:08
this for so as you can see now my steam
00:01:10
duck through this one single cable there
00:01:12
is no trickery here it is outputting
00:01:15
video to this display here and also
00:01:17
getting power but also as you can see it
00:01:20
is getting access to this mouse and
00:01:23
keyboard they do work and that's because
00:01:25
the ports on the back of the iMac here
00:01:26
do actually work and they connect
00:01:28
through that single USB cable not just
00:01:31
that but the webcam here too is working
00:01:33
I'm not turning it on now because it has
00:01:35
a super wide fov and I don't want to
00:01:37
show you my massive room but I have some
00:01:39
beeroll here so you get access to all of
00:01:42
that you get access to speakers and you
00:01:44
also get access to something very
00:01:45
special so we have Office for Mac 2011
00:01:48
here which doesn't work on the steam
00:01:50
deck unless I do some vm3 which I'm not
00:01:52
doing today but yeah if I put it here
00:01:55
there is a working DVD drive that's also
00:01:58
connected through that single USBC you
00:02:00
get access to all you need to turn your
00:02:02
steam deck or laptop into a small party
00:02:05
machine I have my steam controller
00:02:07
dongle thing here let me actually plug
00:02:09
it in the back let me actually uh put my
00:02:11
steam duck back into gaming mode very
00:02:14
often when I hang out with my friends we
00:02:16
want to play some party games or
00:02:18
something like Mario Kart which I never
00:02:21
ever would emulate on my steam deck I
00:02:23
would never do that and we pretty often
00:02:25
would like to have a fast way to get a
00:02:27
bigger screen to actually see what
00:02:29
you're doing and something that can
00:02:30
instantly let us connect controllers to
00:02:33
my steam deck and just play stuff this
00:02:36
is precisely that it's basically the
00:02:38
best hidden sleeper Party Machine that I
00:02:41
could ever build I really viy with the
00:02:43
aesthetic of the inck G5 but right now
00:02:46
they are very useless machines so I
00:02:48
wanted to build like a sort of scene
00:02:51
prop that also is functionally something
00:02:54
that I can use when I am doing stuff so
00:02:56
I can actually display stuff on here
00:02:58
very easily and and I haven't told you
00:03:00
the best part so let me actually unplug
00:03:02
this right now this was pluged to the
00:03:05
wall using a charger but I am European
00:03:08
as you can clearly tell from my uh hair
00:03:10
and my accent which means that of course
00:03:12
I designed this to be fully USBC
00:03:14
compliant this is a fully portable USBC
00:03:18
monitor I can literally just plug my
00:03:20
power bank into it plug my steam deck
00:03:23
and now we should get access to all of
00:03:26
the goodies that have jam packed inside
00:03:28
here hopefully yeah un likee my pight
00:03:30
webcam video I actually designed and
00:03:33
built this from scratch I didn't follow
00:03:35
any instructions everything that you see
00:03:37
here is something that I had to figure
00:03:38
out myself and uh it is a bit juny but
00:03:42
let me tell you how I built this because
00:03:44
uh it's an interesting story since I was
00:03:46
a kid I've seen a lot of people take old
00:03:48
iMac like this one and especially the
00:03:50
iMac G4 which makes sense because that's
00:03:53
probably the best looking computer of
00:03:54
all time and retrofitting them with
00:03:57
newer Parts you see people putting M1
00:04:00
Mac M inside of them or Intel KN and
00:04:02
hacking toshing them but the design of
00:04:04
this iMac is Iconic even after 20 years
00:04:07
this panel is not the iMac G5 and its
00:04:09
successor the white Intel iMac came in
00:04:11
various different sizes I think the 17
00:04:13
in one is the best candidate for modding
00:04:16
because 17 in is small enough to let me
00:04:18
retrofit a new laptop panel I can go to
00:04:21
a website like panel.com and find a
00:04:23
panel that is exactly the same size and
00:04:25
aspect ratio as the original one but
00:04:27
with double the resolution double the
00:04:29
refresh rate rate or even four times the
00:04:30
refresh rate newer backlight technology
00:04:32
and way way thinner of a body and that's
00:04:35
exactly what I did I bought this Boe
00:04:37
display for about 80 you might have seen
00:04:39
it in my last video I was using it there
00:04:41
and after buying a display board
00:04:43
actually three of them I had to figure
00:04:44
out which one was the best one I can
00:04:46
adapt its EMB bettered display port
00:04:47
connector which is meant for laptops to
00:04:50
basically anything and in this case I
00:04:51
went for USBC display port out after
00:04:54
doing some digging I managed to get the
00:04:56
perfect specimen the perfect guinea pig
00:04:59
to work on a 17 in iMac G5 that was sold
00:05:02
for parts and buy for parts I mean
00:05:05
everything was removed from it except
00:05:07
for the housing like the physical case
00:05:09
and the panel this panel right here that
00:05:12
was perfect for me because if I screw
00:05:15
something up I wouldn't end up killing a
00:05:18
working iMac so I I wouldn't feel that
00:05:20
guilty about it and also for €1 I
00:05:23
couldn't really go wrong and so I order
00:05:25
it I wait a bit I get it and I
00:05:28
immediately start checking what I got
00:05:31
because it would have been weird for
00:05:33
someone to try and scam me when I was
00:05:34
buying a broken iMac but you never no
00:05:37
these days I got the package and
00:05:39
everything was exactly what I ordered
00:05:41
which is great except for the fact that
00:05:43
after I started opening it up there are
00:05:45
like some screws here that you need to
00:05:47
remove and then you just take the Basel
00:05:48
out for years I have been under the
00:05:51
impression that IM g5s have their
00:05:53
display their panel mounted on the Basel
00:05:56
and if you go to iix it you can actually
00:05:59
confirm that that I wasn't just having a
00:06:01
pipe dream or a harh pipe dream in case
00:06:03
you're R Cuomo that's actually correct
00:06:05
so why was my iMac having its display
00:06:08
mounted on the body which was a problem
00:06:11
for me because I wanted to just yank
00:06:14
that out and mount my own display and
00:06:16
mounting it on the Basel is just easier
00:06:17
if you are beginner like me well this is
00:06:20
not a normal iMac G5 it's an iMac G5
00:06:23
eyesight and even though they look
00:06:25
completely identical on the outside they
00:06:27
are two completely different machines on
00:06:29
the inside and so I was kind of screwed
00:06:33
I now had to figure out a way to make
00:06:35
that work the most logical solution here
00:06:38
probably would have been designing an
00:06:40
adapter bracket that made my laptop
00:06:42
panel thicker and added some screw
00:06:44
mounts and I didn't do that I didn't do
00:06:46
that and I decided to just do this the
00:06:48
oldfashioned way and by that I mean
00:06:51
copying what the normal iMac G5 does
00:06:54
mounting the display on the bathroom the
00:06:57
first thing that I did was just see if
00:06:59
my actual panel was the right size and I
00:07:03
I tested that by literally taping it on
00:07:06
the Basel and it worked okay nothing CAU
00:07:09
on fire the panel is precisely the same
00:07:11
size as this original piece of trash and
00:07:14
so for a brief second there I could
00:07:17
enjoy the pleasure of taking a look at
00:07:20
what I could eventually build and now it
00:07:22
was time to build it so let me show you
00:07:25
what my solution to mount the panel here
00:07:28
is I I got to take my screwdriver one
00:07:30
second this is the fanciest screwdriver
00:07:33
set that I've ever owned let's open this
00:07:36
thing up and show you uh everything that
00:07:38
I did editor
00:07:40
F bring me a dream give me the best b
00:07:44
roll that I've ever seen because this
00:07:46
camera angle is kind of weird and I
00:07:49
don't even know what I am doing so after
00:07:52
you remove those screws there you just
00:07:54
have to uh basically take out this Basel
00:07:57
here there are two metal clamps here on
00:07:59
the top that I removed you shouldn't
00:08:01
have remove them but I removed them this
00:08:03
is not coming out yeah I forgot a screw
00:08:06
this one of the weird ones too because
00:08:08
Apple really wants to make my life
00:08:11
difficult for no reason and I also got
00:08:14
the wrong bit now there are so many bits
00:08:17
here looks like a Nintendo 64 commercial
00:08:20
all right so you go here you go here let
00:08:24
me show you what I cooked there are
00:08:25
several tables here that are sandwich
00:08:28
between the screen and everything else
00:08:31
and I got to disconnect them so my
00:08:33
solution for mounting the panel on the
00:08:36
Basel has been a combination of a lot of
00:08:39
stuff first and foremost a lot of
00:08:40
electrical tape but I didn't want this
00:08:43
to be like the thing keeping everything
00:08:45
together because you should never rely
00:08:47
on tape too much because if it's too hot
00:08:49
or too cold like Cy Perry uh it loses
00:08:52
its stickiness so yeah never use that
00:08:54
for like permanent mounting here I
00:08:57
basically use it for like lining
00:08:59
everything up but the real sauce here
00:09:01
the thing keeping everything together is
00:09:03
this plastic back plate that by using
00:09:06
some Magnetic Tape here and some here
00:09:10
basically holds everything in place
00:09:11
using magnets this Magnetic Tape is
00:09:14
meant for like curtains but uh yeah I
00:09:17
just put some here some here and it's
00:09:20
basically keeping everything closed
00:09:22
together pressed together to avoid the
00:09:24
panel popping out it took me three
00:09:26
attempts to design a back blade that
00:09:27
will not only fit with some innocent
00:09:29
plastic being sacrificed in the process
00:09:31
but also to figure out where to split
00:09:33
the plastic parts since I can't print
00:09:36
this back plate in one piece in either
00:09:38
of my home printers I have an A1 and an
00:09:40
A1 Mini and both of them can print this
00:09:43
entire piece in one go for some reason
00:09:45
the first time around I really wanted to
00:09:46
use my A1 Mini instead of my full size
00:09:48
A1 and the bambo A1 Mini has a smaller
00:09:51
bed compared to the A1 so I had to make
00:09:54
like super small parts and I didn't
00:09:56
really think this true I was basically
00:09:58
ending up with a F Breaking Bad plates
00:10:00
in having to Like Glue the parts at the
00:10:02
edges with no contact surface second
00:10:04
version was way better and I actually
00:10:06
designed a real proper way to join the
00:10:09
parts by using some super strong
00:10:11
double-sided tape that came with a user
00:10:13
manual for some reason but I made this
00:10:15
one too wide so the eye me wouldn't
00:10:17
close and after making a third version
00:10:19
triming the sides I managed to make it
00:10:21
work finally if you're wondering why it
00:10:24
has this peculiar shape that's because
00:10:27
we also have here a working webcam I got
00:10:31
a USB webcam module from AliExpress it's
00:10:34
not the best but it's acceptable and it
00:10:37
fits perfectly here and I just taped
00:10:40
that one down I didn't bother building
00:10:41
anything fancy for that but what I did
00:10:44
bother building something fancy for our
00:10:47
speakers here let me actually put this
00:10:49
back and while I put this back small
00:10:51
story time to tell you about the
00:10:53
speakers here because you might be
00:10:54
wondering what are those speakers and
00:10:56
why are they so small why are they
00:10:58
mounted that way there's this playay
00:11:00
board right here that I use to control
00:11:02
the laptop panel this is one of three
00:11:05
boards that I bought and it's the only
00:11:07
one that turns on automatically when you
00:11:09
plug in a cable and that's important
00:11:12
because I always meant this board to
00:11:13
stay inside so the user wouldn't have
00:11:16
access to the buttons to turn the
00:11:18
monitor on now this board right here is
00:11:21
perfectly fine for handling video
00:11:23
however when you're building a display
00:11:25
instead of an iMac housing you also want
00:11:28
audio you want to be able to have some
00:11:30
speakers built in because it would be
00:11:33
weird to not have them it wouldn't be
00:11:35
convincing so it has this connector
00:11:37
right here that on this board is
00:11:39
unmarked but on the other two boards
00:11:41
that I got they have the same connector
00:11:43
and there it is marked a speaker
00:11:45
connector after checking the AliExpress
00:11:47
listing again they were talking about
00:11:49
this as a two wat speaker interface
00:11:51
which doesn't really help me figure out
00:11:53
whatever cable goes here but after using
00:11:55
Google Lens I managed to figure out that
00:11:57
this was a ph1 25 connector and after
00:12:01
searching that on AliExpress I managed
00:12:03
to find some speakers specifically made
00:12:05
for these kinds of boards using this
00:12:06
connector and they do
00:12:08
[Music]
00:12:15
work I had no idea how to mount them
00:12:19
here originally until I figured out that
00:12:22
I could use this uh holes here on the
00:12:24
Basel in the metal part so I made this
00:12:27
ramboo shaped housings for the speakers
00:12:30
I modeled them I printed them using my
00:12:32
A1 Mini this time because they are
00:12:34
actually perfect they're small so I
00:12:36
could print them without having to split
00:12:38
them into please never do this they do
00:12:40
work but their quality stinks they're
00:12:43
not good speakers but they are speakers
00:12:45
they're stereo and they work so that's
00:12:49
how I mounted the display to the front
00:12:51
Basel it's a mess okay don't get me
00:12:54
wrong this is not how you should do
00:12:56
stuff but it works and effectively we
00:12:59
just have two cables that uh connect the
00:13:01
back that we're going to talk about in a
00:13:03
second to the front here this webcam one
00:13:06
and the display one and I'm actually
00:13:09
happy with how this turned out it's not
00:13:11
super clean it's not like perfect but it
00:13:14
works and it's not like you're going to
00:13:17
notice it when everything is closed
00:13:19
unless you have X-ray vision in which
00:13:21
case you're probably Superman it is now
00:13:24
time to talk
00:13:26
about this thing but before we do that
00:13:31
let me take a second to talk about
00:13:32
today's sponsor bamboo lab you might be
00:13:34
rightfully wondering fam what is this
00:13:36
background why are you standing in a
00:13:37
kitchenette and the reason is that this
00:13:40
door right here is only working thanks
00:13:43
to my bamboo A1 mini printer that's a
00:13:45
weird story basically uh this door has
00:13:48
been here since forever and it's a very
00:13:49
cheap plastic door it's working using
00:13:51
some hooks here on the top that
00:13:54
eventually after years of f got
00:13:56
destroyed and I couldn't find any
00:13:58
replacements for them they were like
00:14:00
completely impossible to find and so I
00:14:02
just took one of the hooks that still
00:14:04
worked one of the plastic hooks I
00:14:07
recreated it in 3D and I just printed it
00:14:10
in PG with my A1 Mini and now I have a
00:14:14
working door here I have a mini ITX case
00:14:16
that I'm building for my Nest this was
00:14:18
actually a project by a fellow YouTuber
00:14:20
that I downloaded I modified this using
00:14:22
bamboo slicer to have a window in the
00:14:24
front for a USB screen but then I
00:14:27
decided I'm not going to use a USB
00:14:29
screen so I'm also now printing a
00:14:30
different front blade for it which has a
00:14:33
fake logo that I'm printing using the
00:14:35
multiple colors print feature of the AMS
00:14:37
light and yeah I'm a total newbie when
00:14:39
it comes to 3D printing but I love my
00:14:41
bamboo printers they just work like
00:14:43
appliances it's extremely easy to use
00:14:45
them I don't have to think about
00:14:46
leveling the bed manually or anything
00:14:48
like that the printer does everything
00:14:49
for me I just need to think about what I
00:14:52
want to print and then print it using my
00:14:54
computer or my phone I can just use the
00:14:56
bamboo handy app so check out the A1 and
00:14:58
a One Mini in the link in description
00:15:00
and thanks again to Bamboo for
00:15:02
sponsoring this video before we go back
00:15:03
to the video I want to chime in for
00:15:05
transparency and say that some of you
00:15:07
made me aware of a controversy going on
00:15:09
with bamboo right now since they changed
00:15:11
the way Bamboo Connect Works which is
00:15:13
essentially something that lets you
00:15:14
connect to your bamboo printers using
00:15:16
third party slicers I'm going to be
00:15:18
honest I had no idea this was even a
00:15:20
feature I only used bamboo studio for
00:15:22
what I do I'm perfectly happy with
00:15:24
bamboo Studio however for the sake of
00:15:26
transparency I'm going to leave a link
00:15:27
in the description to uh the first
00:15:29
article about these changes that bamboo
00:15:31
made since I've heard a lot of
00:15:32
misinformation about this so I'd rather
00:15:34
just link you to an actual news source
00:15:36
and let you know precisely what's going
00:15:38
on from them that said back to the video
00:15:41
if you're expecting some masterfully
00:15:42
crafted custom PCB think again because
00:15:44
you're about to Embark into a journey to
00:15:47
Jun town where everything works and from
00:15:49
the outside looks perfect but on the
00:15:51
inside it is basically an engineer
00:15:53
Nightmare and a potential fire hazard
00:15:54
okay ready ready for this let's [ __ ]
00:15:57
go all right so I'm taking a p from dkos
00:15:59
for this recording with my iPhone
00:16:01
because it's way easier to explain what
00:16:04
I did here and I've removed everything
00:16:06
except for this mysterious box I mean
00:16:09
all of you have already figured out what
00:16:10
it is and this one which are the bases
00:16:14
that are like stuck to the case right
00:16:15
now so uh let's start from the brains
00:16:19
that make everything work this is a
00:16:22
normal USB hub that has a very special
00:16:24
feature that basically turns it into the
00:16:26
brains of the operation here it has a as
00:16:29
you can see here this
00:16:32
USBC video output so what this means is
00:16:35
that uh if I connect this USB hub to my
00:16:38
steam deck or my MacBook Pro anything
00:16:41
that supports USBC DP Out video output
00:16:44
we can then use this USBC output right
00:16:47
here to interface with a USBC
00:16:51
screen it is connecting but it's it's
00:16:54
not getting enough power don't worry
00:16:57
this is normal we also need to give it
00:16:59
power so there's this PD input here and
00:17:02
we need a USBC cable for that there we
00:17:05
go we have this one right here let's
00:17:07
plug it here let's connect a battery
00:17:11
Bank okay we have enough power here
00:17:14
let's plug
00:17:15
everything back again and as you'll see
00:17:18
here now we are going to have our steam
00:17:21
deck connected to the USB hub which is
00:17:22
providing it a video output and also
00:17:25
power thanks to the PD Port now why are
00:17:28
we going through this USB hub here if we
00:17:32
can just connect the monitor directly to
00:17:34
the steam deck the reason is that I
00:17:37
don't just want to get video output here
00:17:40
I also want all of the ports here on the
00:17:42
back of the iMac to work and that's what
00:17:45
the USB C Hub is supposed to do here the
00:17:47
ideal solution here would have been
00:17:49
designing a custom PCB board that is
00:17:51
emulating the max motherboard fitting
00:17:53
every single hole here perfectly but
00:17:56
right now I don't know how to design
00:17:58
custom PCB so like configures I make do
00:18:01
and my extremely brain D solution is
00:18:03
using USB extenders and Splitters I have
00:18:07
a bunch of them right here and I'll
00:18:09
explain what we're going to do with them
00:18:11
but yeah essentially I just put a lot of
00:18:14
extension cables here trying to make
00:18:16
them fit perfectly uh in the holes on
00:18:19
the back of the iMac and after cutting
00:18:21
the external rubber on some of them or
00:18:24
straight up [ __ ] up some others I
00:18:27
managed to sort of make it work however
00:18:29
I also wanted a USB C Hub to connect to
00:18:32
my steam deck or MacBook not with a mail
00:18:35
plug like this but with a female plug so
00:18:38
I bought these couplers here which
00:18:40
actually fit perfectly and they are
00:18:43
rated for Thunderbolt yeah effectively
00:18:45
thanks to them we have female ports to
00:18:47
connect our power and our devices
00:18:49
directly to the back of the iMac these
00:18:51
are definitely not be spoke and they
00:18:53
stick out a bit but it's fine it's it's
00:18:55
fine and now we have to figure out well
00:18:58
everything else and that is really just
00:19:00
a combination of usba a Splitters usba a
00:19:04
to USBC converters and trial and error
00:19:07
modifying cables hoping that they're
00:19:09
going to fit properly on the back of the
00:19:11
iMac I am very proud of how I managed to
00:19:13
make the three USB ports here work
00:19:15
because it's literally just a very cheap
00:19:17
cable that I stripped from its
00:19:18
protective Rubber and then physically
00:19:20
stuck on the case here with some very
00:19:22
strong tape I had the same with the
00:19:24
audio cables here about a very cheap USB
00:19:27
sound card and I used audio Jack
00:19:29
extenders to extend the audio input and
00:19:31
output Jack to the back of the iMac and
00:19:34
also just stuck everything there using
00:19:36
that tape I also tried doing this for
00:19:38
the ethernet port but the cable was way
00:19:40
too thick even after modifying it so the
00:19:43
only way to have ethernet here would be
00:19:45
having the cable sticking out and I mean
00:19:47
that works if I really need to use it
00:19:50
but right now that and what was the
00:19:52
video output of the iMac are not
00:19:53
connected to anything I don't have
00:19:55
anything coming out of those ports but
00:19:57
now let's talk about was on the inside
00:20:00
because there's a reason if I made this
00:20:01
spaghetti mess and asides from getting
00:20:03
the USB splitter to work it's because I
00:20:06
wanted some devices to be integrated
00:20:08
here and to Simply connect to whatever
00:20:09
device it's connected to the USB hub
00:20:11
with one cable let's start with the
00:20:13
elephant in the room the super drive
00:20:15
here which is not an original Super
00:20:17
Drive I did buy one however it didn't
00:20:19
work it didn't want to like take discs
00:20:21
so I returned it and I bought a bootleg
00:20:24
one a fake one from Amazon that one
00:20:26
worked perfectly so I opened it up I
00:20:28
discovered that I had to like break the
00:20:30
housing in order to just get access to
00:20:32
the rboard and after reusing one of
00:20:34
those first failed attempts of building
00:20:36
a back plate for my LCD panel I managed
00:20:38
to mount it on the back of the iMac I
00:20:40
managed to make it align perfectly and
00:20:42
after connecting it to the hub it just
00:20:45
works which is insane let's open VC
00:20:49
audio
00:20:51
CD come
00:20:54
on it's it's reading it's a
00:20:56
city there we go oh these are the
00:20:59
internal speakers that I put in the
00:21:01
display they suck they are not the Apple
00:21:03
ones okay I switch to the steam de ones
00:21:07
uh but yeah we have a working City Drive
00:21:12
here too the webc come from the front
00:21:13
Basel of course also connects to the hub
00:21:15
that is pretty straightforward but the
00:21:17
thing that I'm most proud of here that I
00:21:19
managed to connect to this and get it to
00:21:22
work is the fler dongle which is the
00:21:24
small dongle right here that lets me use
00:21:27
infrared remotes with
00:21:29
this family Mac the iMac G5 originally
00:21:31
shipped with the Apple remote the first
00:21:34
gen one I have this one new in box that
00:21:36
we're going to open today we're going to
00:21:37
make it non-collectible this is
00:21:39
extremely challenging to open for some
00:21:41
reason after replacing the death
00:21:43
batteries which were here for 20 years
00:21:45
now with some that I stole from a zigby
00:21:47
button and setting up the remote using
00:21:49
the Flair app this is not sponsored by
00:21:50
flare by the way I just really like
00:21:52
their dongles I can use this apple
00:21:54
remote with whatever is connected to
00:21:56
this monitor iMac thing f also since we
00:21:59
are recording our own infrared signals
00:22:01
we can literally use any remote we want
00:22:04
we're are not limited to the Apple
00:22:05
remote so you can literally take your AC
00:22:09
remote and use that I don't know why you
00:22:11
would do that but it works the iMac is
00:22:14
specifically designed to accommodate for
00:22:15
infrared signals because it has a
00:22:17
translucent part in the Basel here which
00:22:20
is where the original infrared module
00:22:21
will sit I've just taped my FLIR dongle
00:22:24
to sort a point there from the inside
00:22:25
and it works they just super junky on
00:22:28
the inside but from the outside it's
00:22:30
totally slick also since the USB hub
00:22:32
actually comes with a built-in micro SD
00:22:34
card reader I put a half gigabyte micro
00:22:36
inside of it which gives me a lot of
00:22:38
space for my Steam games it's not super
00:22:41
fast but it's fast enough for a lot of
00:22:42
games and especially retro games and
00:22:44
party games which is why I build this
00:22:46
entire thing in the first place you know
00:22:48
that photo of Steve Jobs having an ey NE
00:22:50
like this yeah I kind of get it now
00:22:53
because after spending two weeks
00:22:54
building this and tailoring it to my
00:22:56
specific needs I've been using it a lot
00:22:59
and I've been loving it however I have
00:23:02
to of course accept that it's not
00:23:04
perfect and that I could make it way
00:23:06
better it's just that I've never worked
00:23:08
on something like this Hardware modding
00:23:10
retrofitting from scratch before so uh
00:23:13
this has been a learning experience and
00:23:15
there is a lot of stuff that I could
00:23:17
improve here from how I mounted the
00:23:19
ports on the back here because the tape
00:23:21
is working and it's holding everything
00:23:23
in place but it's kind of Wiggly it's
00:23:25
kind of janky what do I mean by
00:23:27
jankiness for example in setup is that
00:23:29
if I disconnect the power from the
00:23:31
display now okay and then I plug it back
00:23:36
even though it starts getting power
00:23:39
again makes this ticking bomb sound
00:23:42
every time uh but yeah it's powered now
00:23:44
again however as you can see we got no
00:23:46
video output because every time you plug
00:23:49
something to this monitor you have to
00:23:51
remember you need to First plug the
00:23:53
power cable in and then only after you
00:23:56
do that plug the uh data cable to your
00:24:00
device it's it's weird but I don't know
00:24:02
if the problem here lays in the display
00:24:04
board or the USB hub there is a problem
00:24:06
with the handshake where like if I don't
00:24:08
plug the power in first then uh the
00:24:12
display can't even like recognize that
00:24:14
something has been plugged in it's weird
00:24:16
also another thing you got to keep in
00:24:17
mind when you're using this is that it
00:24:19
uses a lot of power so if you want to
00:24:21
plug a battery Bank you got to have a
00:24:23
pretty beefy battery Bank in this case I
00:24:26
am using a 20 Vols one it's like USB PD
00:24:31
rated and everything and it works fine
00:24:33
one very peculiar problem is that the
00:24:35
USBC cers deers however their name the
00:24:38
male to female things here that I'm
00:24:40
using to convert the cables into ports
00:24:43
only work on one side which is not
00:24:46
normal but the most important problems
00:24:48
here are actually related to the USB hub
00:24:51
that I'm using because so this is
00:24:54
working pretty much perfectly with my uh
00:24:56
steam Deck with my phone when it comes
00:24:58
to my MacBook sometimes it doesn't like
00:25:01
some stuff that is plugged inside of
00:25:03
here for example the DVD drive doesn't
00:25:05
work pretty often I don't know why it's
00:25:08
working with my steim deck it's not
00:25:09
working with my MacBook however uh that
00:25:12
already happened with other devices my
00:25:14
MacBook is kind of Moody when it comes
00:25:16
to what USBC stuff I'm plug into it so
00:25:20
maybe it's a Macbook Problem by far the
00:25:22
biggest problem that I have with this
00:25:23
was with my Windows computer because
00:25:25
even though it supports USB CDP out out
00:25:28
output it is not providing the USB hub
00:25:31
and the monitor with enough power I
00:25:33
think that's because it doesn't expect
00:25:34
like a fullon USB hub connected to a
00:25:38
video Port that said I actually love
00:25:40
this I'm using it super often and I I'm
00:25:43
looking forward to have this as part of
00:25:45
my like video set in the background
00:25:47
displaying stuff because it has this
00:25:49
like perfect y 2K aesthetic and uh now
00:25:53
it's also got Modern Hardware so I am
00:25:55
extremely happy with what I designed and
00:25:57
made here in order to complete a look
00:25:59
here I've actually bought this apple USB
00:26:01
keyboard that was originally shipped
00:26:03
with the iMac so that's actually its
00:26:05
keyboard is was actually meant to go
00:26:07
with this computer and even though it's
00:26:09
a membran keyboard it's a pretty good
00:26:11
membrane keyboard I could happily live
00:26:12
with that honestly what I couldn't live
00:26:14
with at all is actually the mouse it's
00:26:17
got no right click button because Apple
00:26:19
used to be like that uh it's also like
00:26:22
extremely slow extremely it's it's not
00:26:25
good what the hell is happening now okay
00:26:28
uh yeah so I I would suggest you get a
00:26:31
proper Mouse I just wanted to get this
00:26:33
one because like to complete the look
00:26:36
here I I needed one okay I couldn't
00:26:38
really avoid it but if you're actually
00:26:39
planning on using this daily please get
00:26:41
a decent Mouse don't do this if you're
00:26:43
wondering how much I spent to build this
00:26:45
it was around1 to $125 including
00:26:49
everything however that cost could have
00:26:51
been brought down significantly if I
00:26:53
didn't buy most stuff locally if I
00:26:55
bought everything from China the price
00:26:57
would have been significantly lower and
00:26:59
yeah I know there's going to be some
00:27:01
people in the comments saying stuff like
00:27:02
oh you spent a lot of money just to make
00:27:04
this look like an iMac when you could
00:27:06
have bought this generic display from
00:27:08
Amazon and like yeah that's true I know
00:27:10
that some people don't like apple I know
00:27:12
that some people think that this is a
00:27:14
useless effort but my monkey rain really
00:27:16
likes this kind of Y Tok static and I
00:27:19
really wanted to create something that
00:27:20
was both modern and look like something
00:27:23
from 20 years ago that's pretty much it
00:27:25
when I was a kid these computers were
00:27:26
like the object of my desire I really
00:27:28
wanted one of them but Apple products
00:27:30
were expensive my family didn't want to
00:27:32
spend for them so today as a grown adult
00:27:35
I'm trying to bring back those memories
00:27:37
and enhance them and also try to bring
00:27:39
something useful to life in the process
00:27:41
because remember that this iMac if I
00:27:43
didn't buy it was destined for the
00:27:45
Landfield so I actually turned something
00:27:47
that would have been waste into
00:27:49
something very cool and that's going to
00:27:51
be a part of my set from now on also
00:27:53
about all of the jankiness you have to
00:27:55
keep in mind this is the first time I
00:27:57
try to build anything like this from
00:27:59
scratch without any instructions and
00:28:01
going forward I would like to learn how
00:28:03
to actually design pcbs because it would
00:28:06
make projects like this look way cleaner
00:28:08
and it would spare me having all these
00:28:10
weird issues with like USBC that are
00:28:13
probably also connected to how much I am
00:28:15
string to have here that's something
00:28:17
that I can't ignore that said going
00:28:19
forward there is one thing that I really
00:28:20
would like to build and it's still based
00:28:22
on an iMac but it will be the G4 because
00:28:25
this looks so good and that would be
00:28:27
retrofitting and iMac G4 with modern
00:28:30
computer hardware and I was actually
00:28:33
thinking about like putting a framework
00:28:35
motherboard inside of the computer if
00:28:37
you don't know framework they make
00:28:38
computers that are repairable and
00:28:39
upgradeable and they also sell the
00:28:42
individual parts for repairs and also
00:28:44
just like for DIY projects like this
00:28:46
ones on their website so you can go
00:28:48
there and actually buy a modern laptop
00:28:50
motherboard that is also straight up
00:28:52
design for DIY project someone on the
00:28:54
framework forums actually did this with
00:28:56
a vintage MacBook Pro they retrofit a
00:28:58
new framework motherboard inside of it
00:29:00
so what you see here is a modern
00:29:02
computer and they made custom boards for
00:29:04
everything and oh my God I I really want
00:29:06
to build something like this someday
00:29:08
it's so cool I guess that's it for today
00:29:10
this video was the Natural Evolution of
00:29:12
my eyesight one some of you were like oh
00:29:14
you didn't actually build this you're
00:29:16
just following instructions well guess
00:29:18
what look at this sh look at this fire
00:29:19
hazard is your fault I have to say
00:29:21
making this gave me a completely
00:29:23
different understanding of how much
00:29:25
effort fellow YouTuber bring shout out
00:29:27
to him by the way way he's a great guy
00:29:29
but I now get how interesting and also
00:29:32
difficult it is to retrofit something
00:29:33
from scratch but it's also very
00:29:35
addicting and rewarding so there is also
00:29:37
that side and also considering his aid
00:29:39
for physical media and the fact that I
