basically a little bit of everything so

the video has quite an unconventional

style being that it's animated quite

unusual for a music video particularly

in this kind of like rap genre um so

having it being kind of very bright

colors and kind of quite comic and

graphic and style is quite unusual but

it also helps to Target quite a young

audience the bright colors are very

kid-like it's got very positive

uplifting Vibes and you get that from

the music and the sound as well the bird

song at the beginning is quite uplifting

quite hopeful also in a music video we

typically expect to see a lot of the

actual artist performing we don't really

get that in this music video although

we're seeing a kind of Comic version of

storm Z it's not him so it's it's quite

different quite unconventional that

based it's a story um and again that

might be quite appealing for a young

audience storms is represented as very

powerful somebody to look up to to

see this through the use of repeated low

angles making him look more dominant

there's lots of workingclass urban

settings in this video so lots of what

look like kind of Estates tower blocks

lots of urban buildings graffiti and

this is going to help it um appeal to

quite a kind of urban workingclass

audience particularly a British audience

as well because it feels like a very

British uh town and those wire fences

along with the tight framing of the
00:01:53
camera just encourages us to see these

boys as being trapped in these areas

stormy uses a lot of words within the

lyrics that really um create positive
00:02:04
uplifting and Powerful representations

of young black people so for example he

says in the lyrics a young black king

makes young black people seem respected
00:02:15
idolized powerful and dominant and this
00:02:18
challenges a lot of the negative
00:02:20
stereotypes that we often see in the
00:02:21
media of young black men in particular
00:02:24
and it creates this idea of the kind of
00:02:26
young black people within this video as
00:02:28
being kind of um prop like Heroes the
00:02:32
use of football within the narrative
00:02:34
also helps to Target quite a kind of
00:02:35
working class potentially prominantly
00:02:38
male audience as well it's not just men
00:02:41
though he also refers to young black
00:02:43
queens so it's also about targeting
00:02:46
young black women as well and this
00:02:48
representation of young people and in
00:02:50
particular young black people as being
00:02:52
very powerful is reinforced by lots of
00:02:55
the superhero imagery and narrative
00:02:57
within the video we see images of sto

storm Z and his friends flying through

the sky lots of low angles the kind of
00:03:04
visual effects and that helps to
00:03:06
represent them as being supernaturally

powerful storms is kind of representing

himself as being somebody very
00:03:12
trustworthy and reliable he uses words

in the lyrics such as keep an eye on me
00:03:17
and rely on me and it makes him seem
00:03:20
like he's very paternal and caring
00:03:22
somebody that's going to look after
00:03:24
these people we see images of him

hugging the boys patting them on the

head it makes him seem like quite a

responsible adult that's there to look

out for them we see a girl here and

she's in quite a domestic role so she's

chopping up vegetables she's doing the

washing up and images of girls in

domestic situations are quite common in

the media the fast-paced editing in the

shop makes it feel like she's working

super fast and that she's very powerful

because she's doing so much she's
00:03:51
serving food to an older person and
00:03:53
perhaps this reflects the idea that um

stormy is wanting to kind of show that
00:03:58
elderly people should be part of our
00:04:00
communities that young people have a
00:04:02
responsibility often to look out for
00:04:04
them and that young people are taking
00:04:06
care of their relatives and their
00:04:08
families but it is creating quite a
00:04:10
stereotypical representation of older
00:04:12
people being perhaps quite dependent on
00:04:14
younger people to look after them I
00:04:17
guess it is showing quite an
00:04:18
unconventional family structure though
00:04:20
you're seeing a young girl with an ELD
00:04:22
living with an elderly relative and so
00:04:25
um it's not your typical kind of two
00:04:27
parent um family structure so perhaps
00:04:30
Storm's trying to represent families as
00:04:32
being quite diverse and not always
00:04:34
following those kind of typical ideas
00:04:36
holding this kind of white light makes
00:04:39
stormy and the boy feel super powerful

um and almost magical and there's a
00:04:44
really fast-paced monage here with like
00:04:47
leaping on the cars and doing kind of
00:04:48
unusual poses um and it's disappearing

um it's really about making him seem

very skilled very powerful very magical

Supernatural and exciting we reading a

book here again making him seem quite

educated quite academic and the book

He's reading is quite interesting as

well it's a book by mallerie Blackman

and now stormy was in the BBC adaptation

of her book so it's kind of

cross-promoting something else that

stormy was involved with the actual

Narrative of the book is a lot about um

racial discrimination and equality so

again tying in with this theme about
00:05:24
race um and ethnicity being important in

this music video and perhaps young

people might see this as encouraging

them to be more academic um seeing an

older adult male reading a book and and

being educated might Inspire them also

the images of police here might reflect

the kind of social cultural political

contexts of police brutality

particularly towards young black men in

the community he continues to challenge

some gender conventions by talking about

women can be Kings too um and this again

kind of makes women seem powerful

um and dominant and he does also reflect

a lot of issues that girls have to deal

with on a day-to-day basis so we see a

girl looking in the mirror looking quite

sad and anxious um almost like she's

judging her body and again this may

reflect a lot of social cultural issues

that girls have to face about body image

and feelings of inequality and

selfworth and particularly when she

looks at images of her hair as well it

may reflect the idea that a lot of young

black girls feel um they lack confidence

about hair because they often don't see
00:06:31
images of other women with similar hair

types in the media but when she looks at

a poster of little Sims in the
00:06:38
background um and she sees uh the girl's
00:06:40
braids in the poster she then seems to
00:06:42
be proud of her own hair so perhaps this

is kind of signifying this idea that

young people need to have role models
00:06:49
that look like them in the media they
00:06:51
need to be able to see people that they
00:06:54
can relate to and look up to and just
00:06:57
like earlier where we saw the girl being
00:06:58
quite domestic in the kitchen we're now
00:07:00
seeing quite stereotypical ideas of boys
00:07:03
here as well so we're getting ideas here
00:07:05
of boys in a classroom being quite
00:07:07
academic working with maths on the board
00:07:10
um and we often see um you know images
00:07:12
of people with glasses it we sort of
00:07:14
associate it with being kind of
00:07:16
archetypal geek character in the media
00:07:18
so we immediately get the idea that this
00:07:20
boy is very clever very wise and we
00:07:23
often see that stereotype of boys being
00:07:26
more involved in kind of stem based
00:07:28
subjects the tens flying through the air
00:07:30
could be a kind of intertextual
00:07:32
reference first of all it makes him seem
00:07:34
powerful um and again Supernatural but
00:07:36
it may also remind several audiences of
00:07:39
different media products some people may
00:07:41
see this as references to films like the
00:07:43
Matrix some people may see it as
00:07:45
references to stories like Matilda
00:07:48
children kind of using their inner power
00:07:51
or people using their inner power and
00:07:53
mental abilities to kind of break
00:07:55
through Society stormy saves a boy here
00:07:59
um kind of Dives in and saves him from
00:08:01
falling and that makes him seem quite
00:08:03
heroic and some people may see this as a
00:08:05
kind of reference to things like Toy
00:08:07
Story as well the dad braiding his
00:08:09
daughter's hair challenges some
00:08:10
representations about men not being
00:08:12
domestic so it's showing him looking
00:08:14
after his children doing hair care Etc
00:08:17
and making him seem quite paternal and
00:08:20
again this is reinforced when we see the
00:08:22
images of the dad with his child on his
00:08:23
shoulders making him seem quite domestic
00:08:26
and showing him perhaps as a kind of
00:08:28
single par of
00:08:29
um family so again a kind of non-typical
00:08:32
family structure being represented in
00:08:34
this video the black lives matter
00:08:36
graffiti on the wall again kind of just
00:08:38
reflecting the cultural social context
00:08:41
of what was going on in the media at the
00:08:43
time and we see people in masks um
00:08:46
protesting kneeling down that reflects
00:08:48
the covid pandemic lots of people
00:08:50
wearing masks at the time um and it also
00:08:53
reflects a lot of political protests
00:08:55
that were happening at the time due to
00:08:56
the death of George Floyd when he was
00:08:58
murdered by police in America so seeing
00:09:01
these kind of protests being reflected
00:09:03
in the video might help bring in a
00:09:05
global audience but also appeals to that
00:09:08
kind of black audience who were very um
00:09:11
determined to see more equality and
00:09:14
justice the fist in the air is a symbol
00:09:17
of black power historically that we've
00:09:19
seen in the media in lots of other
00:09:21
places so again reinforcing this theme
00:09:25
of of black power and black equality
00:09:28
within the clouds there is a kind of
00:09:29
hashtag being formed with the word murky
00:09:32
and this is something that reflects
00:09:34
stormy's brand he actually uses this
00:09:36
hashtag and he creates donations to
00:09:40
Black organizations in the UK um and so
00:09:43
kind of cross promoting his other
00:09:45
interests and his other campaigns and
00:09:47
what he does for uh people in the
00:09:49
community and the hashtag helps to
00:09:51
Target active audiences a lot of people
00:09:53
will go online to then find out what the
00:09:55
hashtag is about there's the
00:09:56
alliteration black beautiful and brave
00:09:59
and this alliteration helps to reinforce

that message to audiences we see a girl

here playing football and that

challenges some gender norms for the

young female audience and she's wearing

a Marcus rashford top um which again

links into another young black role
00:10:15
model within the Sporting Community but

also ties in with what rashford was

doing historically at that point in 2020

which was campaigning for free School
00:10:25
meals um and more support for young
00:10:28
people particularly young black people
00:10:30
but not just young black people um
00:10:32
within impoverished communities in
00:10:34
Britain so we've seen people playing

football we then go into this graphic
00:10:38
match of the DJ buttons and that kind of
00:10:41
maybe reflects typical career
00:10:42
aspirations of young people and the DJ
00:10:45
seems to have multiple arms coming out
00:10:47
of him uh being able to operate
00:10:49
different things at different times
00:10:51
maybe makes him seem super powerful and
00:10:53
very hardworking it's a kind of Montage
00:10:55
of lots of different families and people
00:10:57
hugging and embracing and that adds to
00:11:00
this feeling of kind of diversity and
00:11:02
inclusivity and seeing him with images
00:11:04
of a kind of glowing Earth within his
00:11:06
hands again makes him seem super

powerful like he is in charge of the

world on the screen at some point we see

um some graphics that say RP Chadwick

Bosman he died in August 2020 and this

music video was released in the December

of that year Chadwick Bosman obviously

super famous for being in many films but

in particular black panther where he

played um you know an incredibly
00:11:28
powerful superhero that was seen as a
00:11:31
massive role model to a lot of young
00:11:33
black children so paying respects to
00:11:36
other black role models that may have
00:11:38
inspired Generations in fact he mentions
00:11:41
multiple black Role Models within the
00:11:43
video so for example he mentions Venus
00:11:45
Williams he mentions Serena Williams
00:11:48
Simone biles so trying to include both
00:11:51
male and female black role models to
00:11:53
show that black people can be wealthy
00:11:55
successful powerful and important when
00:11:58
the video is released it was actually
00:11:59
released early in schools in Britain so
00:12:02
it was shown within schools that had
00:12:04
opened up it made it have an exclusive
00:12:06
feel and as though it was particularly
00:12:08
targeted at young people and it came
00:12:10
with an exclusive message from stormy as
00:12:13
well giving them kind of like an
00:12:14
inspirational speech the rap genre and
00:12:17
other stormy videos typically have a
00:12:19
slightly older young adult audience so
00:12:21
perhaps young men predominantly in their
00:12:23
kind of early 20s or late teens this
00:12:26
video definitely has a slightly younger
00:12:28
audience with the kind of animated feel
00:12:30
the fact that it was released in a lot
00:12:31
of schools so this is quite a different
00:12:34
audience to his usual one he actually
00:12:36
uses some lyrics from Kesha white song

Someday from the Tracy Beaker theme tune

uh Tracy Beaker being a children's TV

show on the BBC maybe about 15 20 years

ago um it had quite a cult following so

maybe that music there might be

recognizable to his older fans bringing

in those more kind of millennial

audiences that may remember the Tracy

Beaker show the video was promoted on

his website and on his social media too

and that helped it reach quite a wide

Global audience despite it being quite
00:13:07
British in its appearance when stormy
00:13:10
first started as an artist he was very
00:13:12
lowbudget he didn't have a record label
00:13:14
he started out promoting his music on
00:13:16
things like YouTube and Spotify um and a
00:13:19
lot of his first music videos were made
00:13:21
with virtually no budget at all this
00:13:24
music video as you can see through the
00:13:25
animations and the graphics has a
00:13:27
substantially higher budget than his
00:13:29
first one 2020 he was signed to uh Def
00:13:32
Jam which is part of the universal
00:13:34
record label group and obviously that's
00:13:36
a much bigger company and so this video
00:13:39
reflects the much higher budget that
00:13:41
that would bring the animation studio is
00:13:43
called tuente uh they're an Argentinian
00:13:46
company um and they produced this video
00:13:48
in just eight weeks which is quite
00:13:50
astounding really um they used quite
00:13:52
simple backgrounds to cut down on the
00:13:54
amount of Animation they had to do and
00:13:57
this did help to reduce costs the
00:13:59
director was actually kind of
00:14:00
interviewed previously and said that
00:14:02
they really did directly take influence
00:14:05
from um animations uh like Spider-Man
00:14:08
into the spiderverse so you can see the
00:14:09
similarities in the style the director
00:14:12
wanted to retain the British kind of
00:14:14
feel to it but also wanted to bring in
00:14:16
influences from anime like Akira and
00:14:18
Dragon Ball so that was my easy to
00:14:20
