Sintesi

hi everyone this is mr trio and this is
  • 00:00:08
the fourth presentation in our series
  • 00:00:11
for the depth studies b germany
  • 00:00:14
    1918 19
  • 00:00:18
    the focus of this particular
  • 00:00:21
    section
  • 00:00:23
    answers the question
  • 00:00:24
what was it like to live in nazi germany
  • 00:00:30
    there are four focus points
  • 00:00:33
how did young people react to the nazi
  • 00:00:35
    regime
  • 00:00:37
    how successful were nazi policies
  • 00:00:40
    towards women and the
  • 00:00:42
    family did most people
  • 00:00:45
in germany benefit from nazi rule
  • 00:00:48
and finally how did the coming of war
  • 00:00:51
    change life in nazi germany
  • 00:00:56
    so once again
  • 00:00:58
let's begin by looking at big ideas what
  • 00:01:02
    do these four
  • 00:01:04
focus points essentially tell us in the
  • 00:01:06
story of nazi rule in germany
  • 00:01:11
    number one
  • 00:01:12
    is indoctrination
  • 00:01:14
this is a concept in which young people
  • 00:01:17
are brought into the nazi system taught
  • 00:01:20
the nazi system in order for them to
  • 00:01:23
    essentially
  • 00:01:24
create the new nazi society for the
  • 00:01:28
    future
  • 00:01:29
adolf hitler believed that this was the
  • 00:01:31
    third great
  • 00:01:33
    german society to come about
  • 00:01:36
    and essentially
  • 00:01:37
what you will often see this time period
  • 00:01:40
    refer to
  • 00:01:41
    is the third reich
  • 00:01:46
we're going to focus on women and family
  • 00:01:48
    in particular
  • 00:01:50
and one of the key concepts is often
  • 00:01:52
    referred to
  • 00:01:53
as the three k's we'll get into this a
  • 00:01:56
little later but the three k's
  • 00:01:57
    essentially stand for
  • 00:01:59
    children church
  • 00:02:01
    and
  • 00:02:02
    kitchen
  • 00:02:05
we're going to talk about the concept of
  • 00:02:07
german pride how the nazis were able to
  • 00:02:10
convince people that this was a better
  • 00:02:13
    time for germans
  • 00:02:14
    than previous years
  • 00:02:16
    and the last focus point
  • 00:02:18
    is about
  • 00:02:20
the shortages that the impending war
  • 00:02:23
uh will bring back to germany
  • 00:02:26
    uh when
  • 00:02:27
uh the second world war does begin
  • 00:02:33
let's take a look at our first focus
  • 00:02:35
point which is how did young people
  • 00:02:38
    react to the nazi regime
  • 00:02:40
there are three main areas that i want
  • 00:02:42
to talk about the first being schools
  • 00:02:46
one of the things that the nazi party
  • 00:02:48
essentially believed in is that they
  • 00:02:51
needed to train young people into this
  • 00:02:54
new concept this new idea of what the
  • 00:02:57
    nazis believed in
  • 00:02:59
and they were very effective in creating
  • 00:03:01
a national curriculum in which these
  • 00:03:05
    things would be taught
  • 00:03:07
    topic sentence
  • 00:03:10
once a nazi party took over the
  • 00:03:12
    government it created a nationwide
  • 00:03:15
curriculum that taught beliefs of the
  • 00:03:17
nazi party included master race theory
  • 00:03:21
anti-semitism and the importance of the
  • 00:03:24
    military
  • 00:03:26
this photograph helps to illustrate how
  • 00:03:29
at the beginning of the day the school
  • 00:03:31
    children would essentially
  • 00:03:33
    reinforce their loyalty
  • 00:03:35
to their leader adolf hitler and to the
  • 00:03:39
    nazi party in general
  • 00:03:43
there were special programs that were
  • 00:03:45
    specifically designed for girls starting
  • 00:03:48
    at age 10
  • 00:03:50
    through age 18
  • 00:03:52
    and specifically these programs were
  • 00:03:55
designed to teach young women how to be
  • 00:03:59
    good mothers
  • 00:04:00
    and how they
  • 00:04:02
served a very important role in
  • 00:04:04
producing the next generation of germans
  • 00:04:09
there were two groups in particular that
  • 00:04:11
    were important
  • 00:04:13
    for girls
  • 00:04:15
the league of young girls and the league
  • 00:04:17
    of german maidens
  • 00:04:19
maidens is just sort of an old-fashioned
  • 00:04:22
    word
  • 00:04:22
for a girl that has not been married yet
  • 00:04:26
topic sentence the league of young girls
  • 00:04:30
and league of german maidens were
  • 00:04:32
created to reinforce good german values
  • 00:04:36
    and prepare young women
  • 00:04:37
    to be mothers
  • 00:04:39
    this slide shows
  • 00:04:41
    an award
  • 00:04:43
    that young girls could receive
  • 00:04:45
    or should say
  • 00:04:46
    would receive later
  • 00:04:49
based on the number of children
  • 00:04:51
    that they had
  • 00:04:54
there were also programs of course for
  • 00:04:56
    boys
  • 00:04:57
    um these programs
  • 00:05:00
    were essentially
  • 00:05:01
    a way to get
  • 00:05:03
    boys to
  • 00:05:05
    uh think
  • 00:05:07
    more as a group
  • 00:05:08
opposed to thinking as an individual
  • 00:05:12
and these young programs for boys
  • 00:05:15
    essentially
  • 00:05:16
    were rooted in military training
  • 00:05:20
    so essentially
  • 00:05:22
these are the young men who in the 1930s
  • 00:05:25
    will be trained
  • 00:05:27
to be soldiers when the second world war
  • 00:05:30
    begins
  • 00:05:32
    topic sentence
  • 00:05:34
hitler youth programs for boys focused
  • 00:05:37
    on sports
  • 00:05:38
    camaraderie and military training
  • 00:05:41
the importance of loyalty to the nazi
  • 00:05:43
party was more important than anything
  • 00:05:46
    else
  • 00:05:51
    focus point number two
  • 00:05:53
    how successful were nazi policies
  • 00:05:56
    towards women and families
  • 00:05:59
now we talked about this briefly before
  • 00:06:02
um women were encouraged to focus on the
  • 00:06:06
    three k's
  • 00:06:08
at this time women really were
  • 00:06:10
    encouraged not to be professionals
  • 00:06:14
there had been women who were professors
  • 00:06:17
    doctors lawyers in germany
  • 00:06:19
but essentially those things were pushed
  • 00:06:22
    aside
  • 00:06:23
    in order for women
  • 00:06:25
    to focus on the household
  • 00:06:28
    raising of children
  • 00:06:30
and of course church was also an
  • 00:06:32
    acceptable
  • 00:06:34
    pastime or pursuit for women
  • 00:06:37
so although women may have benefited a
  • 00:06:40
great deal because of the programs that
  • 00:06:42
    help to encourage family
  • 00:06:44
it also was a very limiting time when
  • 00:06:48
    women lost positions at major
  • 00:06:51
    universities professional organizations
  • 00:06:54
and also as members of the reichstag
  • 00:06:58
    topic sentence
  • 00:07:00
women were encouraged to focus on the
  • 00:07:02
three k's children church and kitchen
  • 00:07:06
the government helped to reinforce this
  • 00:07:08
by having policies to encourage marriage
  • 00:07:10
    having children
  • 00:07:12
    and parenting classes
  • 00:07:16
    this is a medal
  • 00:07:18
    in which
  • 00:07:20
was given to women who successfully had
  • 00:07:24
    five or more children
  • 00:07:26
    so once again this is
  • 00:07:29
an idea that the nazis are trying to
  • 00:07:31
    reinforce
  • 00:07:32
    that the women's
  • 00:07:35
role in nazi society is to have children
  • 00:07:43
    one of the most bizarre
  • 00:07:46
    programs of this time period
  • 00:07:48
is known as the lebensborn program
  • 00:07:51
    in which
  • 00:07:53
    young girls
  • 00:07:55
from good families who were not married
  • 00:07:58
    were actually impregnated
  • 00:08:00
    by
  • 00:08:01
    officers of the ss
  • 00:08:04
    who were good german soldiers
  • 00:08:07
    in order to create
  • 00:08:08
    a new society
  • 00:08:10
    for the future
  • 00:08:13
    and this program was essentially
  • 00:08:15
    designed
  • 00:08:16
    for young girls to
  • 00:08:19
reinforce this idea of the master race
  • 00:08:22
    to create a new society
  • 00:08:25
for germany and it does seem a little
  • 00:08:27
bizarre by today's standards of course
  • 00:08:30
but it certainly was a part
  • 00:08:33
    of this
  • 00:08:34
    greater master theory
  • 00:08:36
uh master race theory that was behind
  • 00:08:39
    the nazi regime
  • 00:08:41
let's look at the topic sentence
  • 00:08:44
the lebensborn program was designed for
  • 00:08:46
unmarried girls to get pregnant by
  • 00:08:49
    racially pure ss men
  • 00:08:52
and then donate their child to the
  • 00:08:54
    fuhrer
  • 00:09:00
    focus point number three
  • 00:09:02
did most people in germany benefit from
  • 00:09:04
    nazi rule
  • 00:09:06
now i think that your textbook does a
  • 00:09:08
    nice job
  • 00:09:09
of highlighting things such as the
  • 00:09:11
    working class
  • 00:09:13
    farmers and also businessman and
  • 00:09:16
    industrialists that did benefit
  • 00:09:19
    from
  • 00:09:21
uh the nazi regime taken place uh taken
  • 00:09:24
over essentially but one of the things
  • 00:09:27
that i really want to focus on
  • 00:09:30
    as a part of our
  • 00:09:31
    big ideas
  • 00:09:33
    is that
  • 00:09:35
    the nazis were very
  • 00:09:38
effective in helping to change the
  • 00:09:41
    attitude of german people
  • 00:09:44
    and one of the things
  • 00:09:46
that they were able to do
  • 00:09:48
    is to
  • 00:09:49
get germans to once again be proud of
  • 00:09:52
    who they were
  • 00:09:54
germans had suffered greatly during the
  • 00:09:56
    first world war
  • 00:09:58
later in the great depression there had
  • 00:10:00
    been shortages and hardships
  • 00:10:03
and one of the things that did happen
  • 00:10:05
when the nazis came to power is that
  • 00:10:08
    industries began to
  • 00:10:10
produce again and hitler reinforced the
  • 00:10:14
    idea that it was fined
  • 00:10:16
    or encourage to be
  • 00:10:19
proud of the fact that they were germans
  • 00:10:22
and there were lots of things in
  • 00:10:24
    everyday society that helped to
  • 00:10:26
    reinforce this
  • 00:10:27
    volkswagen for example which translates
  • 00:10:30
    roughly to the people's car
  • 00:10:33
    was developed essentially during this
  • 00:10:35
    time period and became this
  • 00:10:37
    international symbol of
  • 00:10:39
    how germans can do
  • 00:10:42
    during this time period
  • 00:10:44
    topic sentence
  • 00:10:46
one of the reasons why the nazis enjoyed
  • 00:10:48
success during this period was that they
  • 00:10:51
gave ordinary people back the pride that
  • 00:10:53
    they had lost
  • 00:10:55
after the first world war and great
  • 00:10:57
    depression
  • 00:10:58
of course as a qualifier it's important
  • 00:11:01
    to remind everyone
  • 00:11:03
    that not everyone
  • 00:11:05
fit into this new german society
  • 00:11:08
    minorities such as jews
  • 00:11:11
    individuals that were
  • 00:11:14
    roma or cinti
  • 00:11:17
    they did not of course
  • 00:11:18
    [Music]
  • 00:11:20
belong to this new feel-good german
  • 00:11:23
    idea
  • 00:11:24
    so
  • 00:11:25
    essentially
  • 00:11:26
what this program was designed to do is
  • 00:11:30
    focus on
  • 00:11:32
racially pure germans as the nazis would
  • 00:11:35
    have put it
  • 00:11:38
now for our final focus point
  • 00:11:41
how did the coming of war change life in
  • 00:11:44
    nazi germany
  • 00:11:46
once the war began the nazis had initial
  • 00:11:50
    success
  • 00:11:52
    and
  • 00:11:53
for example in poland they were very
  • 00:11:55
    successful
  • 00:11:56
from a military point of view
  • 00:11:59
but as the war progressed and eventually
  • 00:12:02
when the united states would enter the
  • 00:12:04
    war against germany
  • 00:12:06
    the war started to change
  • 00:12:09
    and
  • 00:12:10
    at that time
  • 00:12:12
some of the things that had occurred in
  • 00:12:14
    germany beforehand came back
  • 00:12:17
    and one of the things
  • 00:12:19
    that happened
  • 00:12:21
is that the americans with a very strong
