概要

  • 00:10:00 - 00:15:11

  • 00:00:00
    go
  • 00:00:02
ahead hello my name is Michael Barber
  • 00:00:05
I'm a professor here at the Augustine
  • 00:00:06
Institute graduate school and this is
  • 00:00:10
    what Catholics believe about Christmas
  • 00:00:12
    part
  • 00:00:18
two was Santa Claus a real person yes he
  • 00:00:22
most certainly was uh we have good
  • 00:00:25
reason to believe he was born uh around
  • 00:00:28
260 and he became the bishop of mea and
  • 00:00:33
he was known for giving gifts he had
  • 00:00:36
been born to a wealthy family and few
  • 00:00:39
people knew that he had this personal
  • 00:00:41
wealth he didn't keep it for himself he
  • 00:00:43
gave it away and there's a famous story
  • 00:00:45
that goes back to the earliest account
  • 00:00:48
of St Nicholas which is written in 700
  • 00:00:51
so sometime after St Nicholas so we want
  • 00:00:53
to be cautious about you know the
  • 00:00:56
historical details here but in the
  • 00:00:58
earliest stories we read about him
  • 00:01:00
giving gifts to a man who was going to
  • 00:01:03
have to um do terrible things because he
  • 00:01:07
was in poverty and so Nicholas saves
  • 00:01:09
this wonderful little family uh from
  • 00:01:12
poverty with his gift giving so all of
  • 00:01:15
that is why giftgiving is associated
  • 00:01:17
with Christmas most importantly we want
  • 00:01:19
to become like the Lord we want to
  • 00:01:22
imitate God and uh and so we give gifts
  • 00:01:25
as he gave us the most perfect gift how
  • 00:01:28
did Santa Claus become associated with
  • 00:01:31
    Christmas Santa Claus is basically
  • 00:01:34
derived from St Nicholas so many people
  • 00:01:37
imagine that Santa Claus is a very
  • 00:01:40
different character but as Catholics I
  • 00:01:42
don't think we should let that go um in
  • 00:01:45
    fact non-catholic Christians Protestants
  • 00:01:48
in the 19th century in the 1800s in New
  • 00:01:52
York became convinced that they needed a
  • 00:01:55
saint uh to help Rebrand Christmas so
  • 00:01:58
some of the aristocratic figures in New
  • 00:02:00
York um they decided that they that
  • 00:02:03
America needed a better Association for
  • 00:02:07
Christmas and so John pintard who was
  • 00:02:09
the head of the New York Historical
  • 00:02:11
Society uh had a big banquet and he had
  • 00:02:15
    made he personally commissioned a
  • 00:02:17
massive portrait of St Nicholas and he
  • 00:02:21
implored other new new yorkin is that a
  • 00:02:23
word new yorkin anyway he imployed
  • 00:02:25
others to think about imitating St
  • 00:02:27
Nicholas because he was associated with
  • 00:02:29
gift giving so rather than acting
  • 00:02:31
selfishly on Christmas we should imitate
  • 00:02:34
the example of a saint who is trying to
  • 00:02:36
imitate Christ and so he really pushed
  • 00:02:40
Santa Claus and a man who was in the
  • 00:02:41
audience that day was Washington Irving
  • 00:02:44
the famous writer and he made a point
  • 00:02:46
then of talking about St Nicholas in
  • 00:02:50
    connection with Christmas most
  • 00:02:52
importantly there was a poem uh it's
  • 00:02:55
usually attributed to uh clay Moore I
  • 00:03:00
think and uh anyway he most likely did
  • 00:03:03
not write that poem but the Night Before
  • 00:03:05
Christmas all through the house not a
  • 00:03:07
creature was stirring that even a mouse
  • 00:03:09
he wrote that and he specifically ass
  • 00:03:12
Associated Santa Claus with Christmas in
  • 00:03:14
that poem and forever after that he
  • 00:03:17
would be Associated and many people
  • 00:03:19
today I want to make this point many
  • 00:03:21
people today many Catholics today think
  • 00:03:24
St Nicholas or Santa Claus is the kind
  • 00:03:27
of anti type of Christmas or kind of
  • 00:03:30
sellout of Christmas to popular culture
  • 00:03:34
nothing could be further from the truth
  • 00:03:36
in fact the idea of giving gifts to
  • 00:03:38
people in the name of St Nicholas
  • 00:03:40
started in the 1100s when French nuns
  • 00:03:43
would bring candy and toys to orphans
  • 00:03:47
and children who were in poor families
  • 00:03:50
who wouldn't get any presents and they
  • 00:03:51
would leave presents at the house for
  • 00:03:53
these children and they would sign it
  • 00:03:55
from St Nicholas and the idea was it was
  • 00:03:58
St Nicholas example that inspired their
  • 00:04:01
    giftgiving later historians like Timothy
  • 00:04:03
Larson will say that to give as a
  • 00:04:07
Christian was to be a secret Santa and
  • 00:04:11
they would quote The Sermon on the Mount
  • 00:04:14
where Jesus says when you give Ms do not
  • 00:04:18
let your left hand know what your right
  • 00:04:20
hand is doing that your MMS may be in
  • 00:04:22
secret and your father who sees in
  • 00:04:24
secret shall repay you so when you give
  • 00:04:27
gifts to children in the name of St
  • 00:04:28
Nicholas on Christmas it's actually an
  • 00:04:31
act of following Jesus's instruction and
  • 00:04:34
not trying to use the gifts as a
  • 00:04:36
    leverage over your children but
  • 00:04:39
remaining Anonymous in that Pro in that
  • 00:04:41
process so that you don't get the credit
  • 00:04:44
for the gift to the child that's very
  • 00:04:46
Catholic St Nicholas is very Catholic
  • 00:04:48
and I'm all about preserving Santa Claus
  • 00:04:51
    at Christmas time properly understood
  • 00:04:53
why do we give gifts on Christmas well
  • 00:04:55
we can remember first of all that on
  • 00:04:58
Christmas God gave gave us the greatest
  • 00:05:01
gift of all he gave us his only beloved
  • 00:05:04
Son there's no greater gift than that
  • 00:05:06
secondly we can remember that the Magi
  • 00:05:09
brought gifts uh we now that didn't
  • 00:05:12
happen on Christmas Day on the day Jesus
  • 00:05:14
was born but it's still part of the
  • 00:05:16
overall Narrative of Jesus's birth and
  • 00:05:19
they bring precious gifts to Jesus and
  • 00:05:22
then we can also point out that later on
  • 00:05:24
St Nicholas who is someone who becomes
  • 00:05:28
closely asso iated with Christmas he was
  • 00:05:31
known for gift giving so everything that
  • 00:05:33
I'm talking about and all of the answers
  • 00:05:35
to the questions here all these things
  • 00:05:37
are discussed in Greater detail in my
  • 00:05:39
little book the true meaning of
  • 00:05:41
Christmas uh the birth of Jesus and the
  • 00:05:44
origins of the Season which has also
  • 00:05:46
been translated into Spanish you can get
  • 00:05:49
these books uh catholic. market and I've
  • 00:05:53
also done a formed series on Christmas
  • 00:05:56
uh that I hope you'll check out as well
  • 00:05:58
in addition of done done a short course
  • 00:06:00
on Christmas for the Augustine Institute
  • 00:06:02
you can look that up in our short
  • 00:06:04
courses but um I think that you'll find
  • 00:06:06
that this book is a One-Stop shop from
  • 00:06:09
the birth of Jesus to how we got
  • 00:06:10
Christmas trees to uh how we got to the
  • 00:06:13
    day December 25th everything is
  • 00:06:15
    discussed in an accessible hopefully
  • 00:06:18
humorous manner at points uh in this
  • 00:06:20
book what are some Catholic Traditions
  • 00:06:23
associated with Christmas well there are
  • 00:06:25
    many Catholic Traditions associated with
  • 00:06:27
Christmas one is of course Advent the
  • 00:06:30
other is putting up Christmas trees
  • 00:06:33
    another classic Christian tradition was
  • 00:06:36
to think of Jesus being born at midnight
  • 00:06:39
so it's typically understood if you look
  • 00:06:41
at movies or anything Jesus is born at
  • 00:06:44
not just night time you get that from
  • 00:06:46
Luke's gospel but at midnight and the
  • 00:06:49
reason Christians in previous ages would
  • 00:06:52
celebrate a midnight Christmas Mass is
  • 00:06:55
because there's a verse in the wisdom of
  • 00:06:57
Solomon that says for while gentle
  • 00:07:00
silence enveloped all things and night
  • 00:07:03
in its Swift course was now half gone
  • 00:07:06
when is the night half gone midnight
  • 00:07:08
right uh then what happened your all
  • 00:07:10
powerful word leaped from heaven from
  • 00:07:13
the Royal Throne into the midst of the
  • 00:07:15
land that was doomed so the word leaped
  • 00:07:18
from Heaven at midnight and so we have
  • 00:07:21
this tradition of Christmas happening at
  • 00:07:23
midnight so what does my family do to
  • 00:07:25
    celebrate Christmas well the most
  • 00:07:27
important thing my family and I do to
  • 00:07:29
celebrate Christmas is we go to mass
  • 00:07:31
because you can't take Mass out of
  • 00:07:33
Christmas but the other things we do are
  • 00:07:36
things like we typically uh will
  • 00:07:39
celebrate Advent in a way where we have
  • 00:07:42
an Advent wreath at our at our supper
  • 00:07:44
table we light the candles we talk about
  • 00:07:48
Advent we talk about the readings uh I
  • 00:07:51
am a great lover of Christmas so we sing
  • 00:07:55
lots of Christmas songs uh we set up the
  • 00:07:58
Christmas tree we decorate the Christmas
  • 00:08:00
tree together uh and it's just a
  • 00:08:03
beautiful time for family and to think
  • 00:08:06
about holy things and usually you can't
  • 00:08:08
go out to the store and hear songs about
  • 00:08:10
Jesus but at Christmas time you can so
  • 00:08:12
    how long is Christmas technically
  • 00:08:15
    Christmas ends the season
  • 00:08:17
ends with Epiphany and ultimately the
  • 00:08:21
birth of John the Baptist which is
  • 00:08:22
celebrated in January so most sane
  • 00:08:26
    people take down their Christmas
  • 00:08:27
decorations in January but I love the
  • 00:08:30
Christmas tree and so I insist in our
  • 00:08:33
house that we recognize that the early
  • 00:08:36
    Christians celebrated 40 days after
  • 00:08:39
Christmas not just 40 days before
  • 00:08:41
Christmas or not just Advent four weeks
  • 00:08:44
of Advent you know Christmas is bigger
  • 00:08:46
than Advent so you many early Christians
  • 00:08:49
    many Christians throughout history would
  • 00:08:51
attribute the end of the Christmas cycle
  • 00:08:53
to February 2nd which is the Feast of
  • 00:08:56
the presentation of the Child Jesus in
  • 00:08:59
the T Temple so he's still a child in
  • 00:09:01
that feast and that happens on February
  • 00:09:04
2nd so uh you could if you really love
  • 00:09:07
the Christmas season and you don't want
  • 00:09:09
to see it go uh you could maybe wait
  • 00:09:12
till February 2nd to declare the end of
  • 00:09:15
the Christmas season it wouldn't be the
  • 00:09:17
end of the Christmas season but you
  • 00:09:18
could say the end of the Christmas cycle
  • 00:09:21
might be a better way to put it uh more
  • 00:09:24
technically Catholics talk a lot about
  • 00:09:27
Advent what's that all right so Advent
  • 00:09:30
celebrates the three comings of Jesus
  • 00:09:33
and it's appropriate that we begin
  • 00:09:35
Advent right before Christmas so the
  • 00:09:37
fourth Sunday before Christmas we begin
  • 00:09:40
the celebration of Advent the earliest
  • 00:09:42
records we have of this go back to the
  • 00:09:44
fifth century um so it's been practiced
  • 00:09:47
by Christians for over a thousand years
  • 00:09:50
now uh and what Advent is doing is
  • 00:09:53
preparing us for the coming of Christ
  • 00:09:54
but we want to think of the coming of
  • 00:09:56
Christ in three ways his coming in his
  • 00:09:58
Nativity his is coming in our hearts as
  • 00:10:01
    Believers especially by Grace especially
  • 00:10:03
in the sacraments and prayer and
  • 00:10:06
meditating on scripture and the third
  • 00:10:08
way he's coming is at the end of time
  • 00:10:11
where he will come to judge the living
  • 00:10:13
and the dead so the time before Jesus's
  • 00:10:16
first coming at Christmas is an
  • 00:10:18
appropriate time to reflect on these
  • 00:10:20
three comings and to prepare for him
  • 00:10:22
through various penances for more on
  • 00:10:24
Advent for more Advent Reflections I
  • 00:10:26
want to point you in in the direction of
  • 00:10:28
a series called rooted you'll find it on
  • 00:10:31
formed it's by a Catholic Theologian and
  • 00:10:34
a professor here at the Augustin
  • 00:10:36
    Institute Scott hefflefinger a dear
  • 00:10:38
friend of mine uh want to encourage you
  • 00:10:40
to check that out during the Advent
  • 00:10:43
season I think you'll get much out of it
  • 00:10:45
our popular Christmas songs related to
  • 00:10:47
the Christmas story 100% there are so
  • 00:10:51
many Christmas songs it's pretty much
  • 00:10:54
overwhelming to think about them all
  • 00:10:56
What Child Is This is obviously about
  • 00:10:59
the birth of Christ The First Noel
  • 00:11:02
obviously about Jesus's birth Angels We
  • 00:11:05
Have Heard On High angels are everywhere
  • 00:11:08
at Christmas if you think about it um
  • 00:11:10
and that's because the Angels appeared
  • 00:11:12
to the shepherds in the field and also
  • 00:11:15
in the gospel of Matthew there's a star
  • 00:11:17
that goes through the sky a lot of
  • 00:11:19
people think that's like you know some
  • 00:11:20
kind of planetary alignment or something
  • 00:11:23
like that no the ear fathers understood
  • 00:11:25
that that star was likely in appearance
  • 00:11:27
of an angel angels and stars are
  • 00:11:29
inseparable that's why some people put a
  • 00:11:32
star on top of their tree and other
  • 00:11:35
people put a angel on the top of their
  • 00:11:37
tree so uh these things go together but
  • 00:11:39
you hear the all these songs and um uh
  • 00:11:43
you know we three kings right the three
  • 00:11:45
kings song is about that let all mortal
  • 00:11:48
flesh keep Silence has to be however my
  • 00:11:52
favorite Christmas song let all mortal
  • 00:11:55
flesh keep silence and with fear and
  • 00:11:58
    trem
  • 00:12:00
    stand Ponder nothing Earthly
  • 00:12:03
minded and with something in his hand
  • 00:12:07
well I got the rest of it just do the
  • 00:12:09
beginning of it just do the first two
  • 00:12:10
vers Christ has come to Earth descend
  • 00:12:11
death right yes that's right but what I
  • 00:12:14
particularly love about let all mortal
  • 00:12:16
flesh keep silence aside from the melody
  • 00:12:19
which is just simply beautiful and the
  • 00:12:21
minor key is the emphasis on the
  • 00:12:24
    connection between the Incarnation and
  • 00:12:26
then later in the song on the UK IST so
  • 00:12:30
the Eucharist is a sort of extension of
  • 00:12:33
    Jesus's Incarnation his body is
  • 00:12:36
available to us in the Eucharist uh in a
  • 00:12:40
sacramental mode and that is just
  • 00:12:42
profoundly glorious what are the 12 Days
  • 00:12:44
of Christmas well on the first day of
  • 00:12:47
Christmas my true love gave to me a
  • 00:12:49
partridge in a pear tree right we know
  • 00:12:52
that is a Biblical reference as we go on
  • 00:12:55
we see uh my my love gave me two turtle
  • 00:12:58
doubs and in the Gospel of Luke uh Mary
  • 00:13:02
and Joseph bring two turtle doves so
  • 00:13:04
people have long thought that that song
  • 00:13:05
might be somehow a coded message and
  • 00:13:08
    Christians sang this song Under
  • 00:13:10
persecution it's nonsense uh there's no
  • 00:13:13
historical evidence for that it's just a
  • 00:13:14
silly goofy song So What really are the
  • 00:13:17
12 Days of Christmas well the 12 days of
  • 00:13:19
Christmas are ultimately from the birth
  • 00:13:21
of Jesus December 25th all the way to
  • 00:13:24
the Feast of the Epiphany which is
  • 00:13:26
January 6 that's 12 days and so we would
  • 00:13:29
celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas in
  • 00:13:31
that time the particular days become
  • 00:13:34
very holy so early on Christians wanted
  • 00:13:36
to celebrate Christmas as an octave they
  • 00:13:39
celebrated Easter as a 8-day feast an
  • 00:13:41
octave ancient Jews celebrated the Feast
  • 00:13:44
of Tabernacles as a 8-day festival we
  • 00:13:47
see that in Leviticus 23 and so the idea
  • 00:13:49
was Christians should celebrate an 8-day
  • 00:13:52
Festival so originally it was January
  • 00:13:55
    1st December 25th to January 1st the
  • 00:13:58
feast of Mary the Mother of God and then
  • 00:14:01
other feast days seem to have got rolled
  • 00:14:04
into that like the Feast of St step on
  • 00:14:07
December 26 the Feast of John the
  • 00:14:10
Apostle on John on on December 27th and
  • 00:14:14
then the Feast of the slaughter of the
  • 00:14:16
Holy Innocents on December 28th what do
  • 00:14:19
all these have in common they're all
  • 00:14:21
Martyrs and as we see in the earliest
  • 00:14:23
    document that clearly indicates that
  • 00:14:27
December 25th was celebrated as the
  • 00:14:28
birthday of Jesus uh we see there that
  • 00:14:32
those feast days of the martyrs are
  • 00:14:33
    understood as birthdays they're Heavenly
  • 00:14:35
birthdays so we're going to celebrate
  • 00:14:37
Jesus's birthday now let's celebrate the
  • 00:14:39
Heavenly birthdays of the martyrs so it
  • 00:14:42
was French Christians who were the first
  • 00:14:45
to think of 12 Days of Christmas linking
  • 00:14:48
December 25th the birthday of Jesus to
  • 00:14:51
the Feast of the Epiphany on January 6
  • 00:14:54
thanks for watching these videos on what
  • 00:14:56
Catholics believe want to wish you you
  • 00:14:59
and your family a blessed and merry
  • 00:15:01
Christmas thanks so much for watching
