Grasping The Illusory Nature Of Thought
概要
TLDRIn a video from actualized.org, Leo discusses the elusive nature of thoughts, emphasizing their impact on our lives and personal growth. He argues that while thoughts are central to human life, many people take them for granted or misunderstand them. Through various analogies and examples, Leo highlights the importance of recognizing thoughts as illusory, much like images or symbols that don't necessarily represent reality. He introduces a technique called "flattening the illusion," which involves observing and breaking down thoughts into their literal components without projecting additional meaning. Leo suggests a practical exercise to record and analyze 50 thoughts in real life to improve mindfulness. He emphasizes the importance of mastering one's thoughts to achieve self-actualization, reduce suffering, and enhance personal freedom. This mastery requires practice and development of mindfulness. Leo provides tips and exercises to start becoming more aware of how meanings are constructed through thoughts.

- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
This episode explores the nature of thought and its significance in our lives. The host emphasizes that understanding what a thought is, beyond mere philosophical pondering, is crucial for self-actualization. Thoughts are intangible yet play a significant role in shaping our interpretation of reality and self-perception. Becoming aware of the elusive nature of thoughts can help free us from mental constraints.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
A story about Picasso illustrates the subjective interpretation of reality through images, highlighting that perception often goes beyond the literal nature of objects. This analogy is extended to thoughts, emphasizing how easily we get absorbed into arbitrary meanings created by our minds. Awareness of this process can prevent us from mistaking mental constructs for reality.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The concept of symbols is introduced; symbols represent something they are not. This arbitrary nature of symbols is crucial in understanding thoughts. Leo argues that thoughts are symbols that have been attributed meaning arbitrarily, which implies that human perception is highly abstract, and this understanding is essential in discerning the illusory nature of thoughts.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Using various analogies, the host explains how meanings are not inherent in symbols but assigned by the mind. Recognizing this illusion can help mitigate unwarranted emotional reactions and suffering born out of misinterpreted meanings. This awareness can transform one's understanding of personal challenges, highlighting that problems often arise from self-constructed meanings rather than reality itself.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The technique of 'flattening the illusion' is introduced — a method to detach from emotionally charged interpretations by seeing things literally. By practicing this technique, one can gain control over their emotional responses and start deconstructing the meanings they associate with their thoughts, seeing them instead for what they literally are.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Several exercises are presented to practice the technique of flattening the illusion, aimed at distinguishing between the literal and perceived aspects of thoughts. These include analyzing thoughts and experiences related to commonly significant themes like family, beliefs, and the sense of self, encouraging the audience to observe thoughts objectively and challenge their validity.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The practice of mindfulness is emphasized as critical for self-improvement. Mindfulness allows individuals to break down thoughts into non-reactive components, reducing emotional suffering caused by misunderstanding these mental processes. This is seen as a foundational skill for achieving personal mastery and a self-actualized life.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
The influence of thoughts on personal perception and emotion is discussed, illustrating how deeply entrenched mental meanings can distort reality and exacerbate emotional distress. The episode underscores the necessity of regular practice in altering these self-imposed narratives to dissolve mental and emotional burdens.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:00
An assignment is suggested for listeners to track and analyze their thoughts, breaking them down into literal components and assigned meanings. This exercise aims to increase awareness of the nature of thoughts, promote emotional detachment, and enhance mindfulness, which are crucial steps towards mastering one’s psychological landscape.
- 00:45:00 - 00:50:16
Finally, the speaker encourages listeners to engage with additional resources and supportive practices that advance understanding and mastery of thoughts. The episode concludes with an invitation to explore deeper self-awareness and mental clarity, promising transformative potential for those dedicated to internal work.

- 00:00:00hey this is Leo for actualized.org and
- 00:00:05in this episode I'm going to be talking
- 00:00:06about grasping the elusory nature of
- 00:00:14[Music]
- 00:00:20thought what is a thought
- 00:00:24exactly what really is
- 00:00:28it this is one of those kind questions
- 00:00:30that everyone thinks that they know to
- 00:00:33the point where they don't even bother
- 00:00:35investigating it or they take it as some
- 00:00:38sort of philosophical question that has
- 00:00:41no pertinent application to their
- 00:00:43everyday life and nothing could be
- 00:00:46further from the
- 00:00:47truth one of the most important
- 00:00:50questions you can ask in your life is
- 00:00:52this question of what is a thought
- 00:00:55because after all you do think quite a
- 00:00:58bit
- 00:01:00so if what you think a thought is is not
- 00:01:03what a thought is then wouldn't that be
- 00:01:07embarrassing wouldn't that be a source
- 00:01:09of potentially many problems in your
- 00:01:11life if You Were Somehow fundamentally
- 00:01:13mistaken about really the true nature of
- 00:01:18thoughts after all you're using thoughts
- 00:01:21to think about your life and you're
- 00:01:25using thoughts to analyze reality and
- 00:01:28you're using thoughts thoughts
- 00:01:31to grasp
- 00:01:34truth and yet you've never really
- 00:01:37bothered to grasp what thoughts are
- 00:01:40you've always taken them for
- 00:01:43granted pretty much always from day one
- 00:01:46you've taken thoughts for granted and
- 00:01:48your thoughts are a very odd almost
- 00:01:53quasi magical mystical thing because
- 00:01:56they're not physical objects out in the
- 00:01:57physical world they're happening inside
- 00:02:00your mind so to speak but what exactly
- 00:02:02are
- 00:02:05they the nature of thoughts is
- 00:02:08illus and most people do not have
- 00:02:11awareness over what thoughts are and
- 00:02:13this gets them into so much
- 00:02:15trouble the difference between knowing
- 00:02:18what a thought is and not knowing what a
- 00:02:20thought is is the difference between
- 00:02:22living in a self-constructed mental
- 00:02:25prison a hellscape in which you suffer
- 00:02:29all all the negative emotions that you
- 00:02:32suffer all your anger your sadness your
- 00:02:34frustration all the uh difficulties you
- 00:02:37have in relationships with money with
- 00:02:39business with your health and all that
- 00:02:42stuff cuz all those problems are largely
- 00:02:45conceptually
- 00:02:47created they're taking place in your
- 00:02:49mind it's the difference between living
- 00:02:51in that kind of mental healthscape and
- 00:02:56the opposite of it which is living in a
- 00:02:59sort of uh freedom and getting to a
- 00:03:03self-actualized kind of life which is uh
- 00:03:06what I'm here to help you to do so if
- 00:03:08you want to self-actualize life you
- 00:03:10should really concern yourself seriously
- 00:03:12with the question of what is a
- 00:03:15thought and I don't mean just thinking
- 00:03:18about it in some philosophical manner or
- 00:03:21reading what a thought is in a textbook
- 00:03:23or looking up in a dictionary I mean
- 00:03:25getting a
- 00:03:28experiential direct aware Wess or
- 00:03:30Consciousness or mindfulness over what
- 00:03:33thoughts are in your experience because
- 00:03:36it doesn't matter what you think
- 00:03:37thoughts are it doesn't matter what you
- 00:03:39believe thoughts are cuz actually that's
- 00:03:41just more thinking so see you can't
- 00:03:44escape this problem by thinking about it
- 00:03:46more what you got to do is you got to
- 00:03:48actually become aware of what thoughts
- 00:03:50are in your direct experience so that
- 00:03:53it's functioning for you so that the
- 00:03:54knowledge is functioning in your life
- 00:03:56and it's making a difference you see and
- 00:03:59it's not just another
- 00:04:01belief what does it mean to say that
- 00:04:03thoughts are elusory well uh I'm not
- 00:04:05saying that thoughts are not
- 00:04:07real a lot of people hear me talking
- 00:04:10about Consciousness work or meditation
- 00:04:12or maybe some Enlightenment topics and I
- 00:04:15talk about thoughts and how thoughts are
- 00:04:17tricky and they're deceptive and they're
- 00:04:18elery and then say oh well yeah of
- 00:04:20course yeah thoughts are so thoughts
- 00:04:21aren't real then but that's not what I'm
- 00:04:23saying at all thoughts are very real
- 00:04:27thoughts are as real as the car the the
- 00:04:29tree the house your
- 00:04:34body
- 00:04:36but there's a wrinkle to it see thoughts
- 00:04:38are like chameleons the problem with
- 00:04:41thoughts is that what they appear like
- 00:04:44on the surface is not what they actually
- 00:04:46are or rather it's vice versa thoughts
- 00:04:50as they appear are exactly what they are
- 00:04:53but you take them to mean a lot more
- 00:04:55than they really are you attribute a
- 00:04:57certain depth to them that
- 00:05:00normally you shouldn't attribute to them
- 00:05:03not if you were fully
- 00:05:06aware there's a great story that I like
- 00:05:08about Picasso and Picasso I don't know
- 00:05:11if you know anything about him but
- 00:05:12basically he was a uh kind of a radical
- 00:05:15Avant guard Cubist painter and all of
- 00:05:17his paintings are not very realistic
- 00:05:19looking in fact it's hard to even see
- 00:05:22what the paintings are about sometimes
- 00:05:24you could have a painting of a woman and
- 00:05:26then you look at it doesn't even look
- 00:05:28like a woman so this is kind of like
- 00:05:31abstract type of Art and uh one day as
- 00:05:34The Story Goes Picasso was traveling in
- 00:05:37a in a train and he was just a passenger
- 00:05:39and there was a man sitting near him in
- 00:05:41the cabin and they're traveling together
- 00:05:43and the man he recognizes Picasso and
- 00:05:45says oh you're Picasso and Picasso's
- 00:05:47like yeah and the man says oh you know I
- 00:05:49don't I don't like what you do I don't
- 00:05:51like your work you know the art that you
- 00:05:53do isn't very good and Picasso says what
- 00:05:56do you mean the man says well what I
- 00:05:58don't like about your work is that it's
- 00:06:00not
- 00:06:01realistic why do you go to all this
- 00:06:04length to paint these paintings which
- 00:06:07have nothing to do with life they're not
- 00:06:09realistic at all and Picasso looks at
- 00:06:12him kind of puzzles and says what do you
- 00:06:13mean they're not
- 00:06:15realistic show me an example of what you
- 00:06:17mean and the man he opens up his wallet
- 00:06:20and takes out a photograph of his wife
- 00:06:22it's a little 2in by 2 in Little Square
- 00:06:25black and white photograph of his wife
- 00:06:28and he shows it to says here look look
- 00:06:30look at this look this right here this
- 00:06:32is
- 00:06:34real why don't you paint stuff like this
- 00:06:37that would be more useful than what you
- 00:06:38do and Picasso he looks at the he looks
- 00:06:41at the photograph he takes it in his
- 00:06:43hand he kind of looks at it like this
- 00:06:44brings it close to his face he turns it
- 00:06:46to the side kind of like looks at at the
- 00:06:48back of the
- 00:06:49photograph then he tells the
- 00:06:52man you know your wife she's awfully
- 00:06:55small and also she's very flat
- 00:07:01so that's just a great little anecdote
- 00:07:03that I like which shows us the problem
- 00:07:06with
- 00:07:08images is that images have a
- 00:07:11certain like Allure to them and they're
- 00:07:15able to suck Us in into their own
- 00:07:17reality without us being aware of what
- 00:07:20the image really literally is as in the
- 00:07:24case of a photograph it's a piece of
- 00:07:26paper with some black ink on it that's
- 00:07:29what it literally is but what the man
- 00:07:33makes it out to be in his mind is his
- 00:07:36wife of course the photograph is not
- 00:07:39literally his
- 00:07:41wife but it's really easy to get lost in
- 00:07:45such minutia because the mind is very
- 00:07:48good at abstracting and it tends to
- 00:07:51consider things that aren't really the
- 00:07:53thing it thinks it is as something that
- 00:07:57the Mind imagines because the mind likes
- 00:07:59to abstract
- 00:08:01stuff there's uh actually uh a great
- 00:08:05painting classic painting by Renee mcre
- 00:08:08he was a surrealist painter maybe you've
- 00:08:11seen this one it's called the treachery
- 00:08:13of images and what it is and I'll show
- 00:08:17it to you right here what it is is it's
- 00:08:21just a very simple canvas with a picture
- 00:08:25of a pipe and then it says I believe in
- 00:08:28French it says
- 00:08:30this is not a
- 00:08:32pipe kind of cool I like that
- 00:08:35one so uh what's the significance of all
- 00:08:38this well I want to give you some
- 00:08:40analogies for the treachery of
- 00:08:45thoughts so a photograph is not the
- 00:08:49thing depicted right pretty obvious I
- 00:08:52mean this isn't rocket science the
- 00:08:54problem is that we just tend to ignore
- 00:08:57it we tend to ignore the significance of
- 00:08:59such a simple little distinction that a
- 00:09:02photograph is not the thing depicted cuz
- 00:09:04here's the problem is that if you think
- 00:09:06that a photograph is the thing depicted
- 00:09:09for example I can show you a photograph
- 00:09:11of a a pizza a delicious mouthwatering
- 00:09:15pizza and if you actually believe and
- 00:09:18confuse the photograph for the real
- 00:09:20thing then you might actually delude
- 00:09:22yourself into thinking that this
- 00:09:25photograph of a pizza will be able to
- 00:09:28ease your hunger
- 00:09:30you might actually pack for a trip let's
- 00:09:33say to go mountain climbing and you need
- 00:09:35to pack some food and supplies and
- 00:09:37instead of packing actual food that's
- 00:09:40going to give you sustenance and allow
- 00:09:42you to live on that mountain for a week
- 00:09:45what you do is you just pack a box full
- 00:09:47of photographs of food now if you did
- 00:09:50that that would be a fatal
- 00:09:53mistake now of course this is kind of
- 00:09:55preposterous exaggerated example and you
- 00:09:57say well Leo I don't really that in my
- 00:10:00life but I beg to differ this is exactly
- 00:10:04what you do in your
- 00:10:05life you're just not very aware of it
- 00:10:07yet and I want to help you to draw this
- 00:10:09out in your
- 00:10:12experience so some more analogies if I
- 00:10:14show you a three-dimensional drawing of
- 00:10:16an
- 00:10:19object actually that's not a
- 00:10:21three-dimensional object it's a
- 00:10:22two-dimensional object represented in a
- 00:10:24threedimensional way which kind of
- 00:10:26creates a certain kind of Illusion which
- 00:10:28draws you in and makes you believe for a
- 00:10:30moment that it's actually
- 00:10:32threedimensional
- 00:10:33pretty common
- 00:10:35example another great example is a
- 00:10:40book have you ever just taken a book and
- 00:10:43opened it up and this is something I
- 00:10:45encourage you to actually go and do
- 00:10:47pause this recording and actually go do
- 00:10:49this after I tell
- 00:10:50you pick up a book and just kind of flip
- 00:10:52through it and notice that all there is
- 00:10:55in this book is just black markings on
- 00:10:57white paper
- 00:11:02that's literally what a book is It's
- 00:11:06Paper many pages of it with a cover and
- 00:11:10black
- 00:11:12markings the story that you think is in
- 00:11:14the book like let's say this is a a
- 00:11:16mystery novel or a romance novel or some
- 00:11:21sort of serious textbook on physics or
- 00:11:24mathematics doesn't matter what the
- 00:11:26content is that's what we're calling the
- 00:11:28story
- 00:11:30there is actually no story in the book
- 00:11:33the story is something your
- 00:11:36mind creates out of the black markings
- 00:11:40on the White
- 00:11:42Pages you
- 00:11:44see and it's really useful to to just to
- 00:11:47get that shift actually get this shift
- 00:11:49directly in your experience because when
- 00:11:51you normally pick up a book you're like
- 00:11:53oh yeah that's a sentence that's a word
- 00:11:55immediately your mind without even
- 00:11:57thinking about it your mind starts to
- 00:11:58interpret these markings the mind
- 00:12:00doesn't recognize that these are just
- 00:12:02markings because the mind says well yeah
- 00:12:04of course they're markings I know
- 00:12:05they're markings let's get beyond that
- 00:12:07let's see how these markings can
- 00:12:08actually be useful to me and the use of
- 00:12:10the markings to me is that they tell me
- 00:12:11a story or give me some sort of
- 00:12:13information so let me just go and jump
- 00:12:15straight into the
- 00:12:17information now that's not a problem
- 00:12:18with books but it becomes a problem when
- 00:12:22this analogy gets applied to your mental
- 00:12:26process I'm just giving you analogies
- 00:12:28right now and I'm going to tie it in
- 00:12:30with how this fits in with your life in
- 00:12:31a
- 00:12:32minute also think about language what is
- 00:12:35language language is just arbitrary
- 00:12:39sounds of course your mind immediately
- 00:12:42interprets meaning and assigns that to
- 00:12:45the sounds so the sounds sound like
- 00:12:48they're actually words and that the
- 00:12:49meaning in the words is inherent to the
- 00:12:52words but if I spoke to you for
- 00:12:58example
- 00:13:06for unless of course you speak Russian
- 00:13:09and then you can understand and decipher
- 00:13:12what those sounds mean otherwise those
- 00:13:14sounds are just gibberish to you total
- 00:13:18gibberish that's what language is it's
- 00:13:21just gibberish
- 00:13:22sounds which your mind
- 00:13:26then deconstructs and creates some kind
- 00:13:29of a meaning out of
- 00:13:31it so those are just some analogies now
- 00:13:34how is this possible how is it possible
- 00:13:36that
- 00:13:37meaning can be contained within just
- 00:13:39gibberish sounds or just markings on a
- 00:13:42piece of paper or pixels on a
- 00:13:44screen the way it's possible is through
- 00:13:48symbols and a symbol is a really
- 00:13:50fascinating thing it's it's remarkable
- 00:13:53What a symbol is look at this look at
- 00:13:55the genius of what a symbol is a symbol
- 00:13:57is a thing
- 00:14:00that
- 00:14:01represents something that it itself is
- 00:14:06not did you get
- 00:14:09that really think about this a symbol is
- 00:14:13by definition not the thing that it
- 00:14:20represents that's pretty
- 00:14:22freaky if you think about
- 00:14:25that symbols are actually completely
- 00:14:28arbitrary
- 00:14:30anything can stand in as a symbol for
- 00:14:33anything else for example I can
- 00:14:36represent the
- 00:14:39moon with any symbol that I want I can
- 00:14:42represent it with a
- 00:14:44refrigerator I can represent your mom
- 00:14:46with a
- 00:14:48fish I can represent the money in your
- 00:14:51bank account with five chicken eggs
- 00:14:59ion can represent your entire life
- 00:15:02story with a uh can of Coca-Cola you
- 00:15:06know like there is no limit to what the
- 00:15:08symbol can be a lot of times we think
- 00:15:09like well the symbol sort of has to
- 00:15:12resemble the original thing and no it
- 00:15:15actually doesn't not at all in fact most
- 00:15:18of the symbols we use uh most of the
- 00:15:20English language uh both spoken and
- 00:15:24written has nothing to do with the
- 00:15:26meanings when I say the word cat that
- 00:15:29has nothing at all to do it has no
- 00:15:31resemblance whatsoever to the actual
- 00:15:34animal
- 00:15:35cat you ever notice that kind of funny
- 00:15:38just like totally arbitrary right
- 00:15:40totally arbitrary and yet our mind is
- 00:15:42able to decipher it because all that's
- 00:15:44necessary in our mind is just a mapping
- 00:15:46the mapping in the mind is just like
- 00:15:47well cat
- 00:15:50equals the actual animal
- 00:15:53cat that's all the Sor and you can
- 00:15:55change all those meanings around if you
- 00:15:56wanted to you can teach yourself new
- 00:15:57languages or you can even
- 00:15:59reinterpret what an existing language
- 00:16:01means right now all this might seem kind
- 00:16:03of obvious but also just notice how
- 00:16:07unconscious this makes
- 00:16:09you because you're born into this world
- 00:16:12and just after a couple of years already
- 00:16:15you're just taught language you're
- 00:16:17taught language your mind is primed for
- 00:16:20learning language and then this language
- 00:16:22is what you use to think
- 00:16:24with so your thoughts are arbitrary
- 00:16:29symbols and your you think in language
- 00:16:30you also think in images but largely
- 00:16:32your thoughts are just kind of arbitrary
- 00:16:34symbols which acquire meaning over
- 00:16:40time and what the human brain is it's a
- 00:16:43magnificent mechanism for shuffling
- 00:16:46around all these symbols and then
- 00:16:48creating all sorts of meanings and
- 00:16:50interconnections between these symbols
- 00:16:53and then see what happens after a while
- 00:16:54after you do this for 10 20 30 years
- 00:16:57what happens is that you start to create
- 00:16:58all sorts of weird Twisted meanings in
- 00:17:00your
- 00:17:01mind where something can happen in
- 00:17:04reality and then it can make you feel
- 00:17:06depressed or it can make you feel angry
- 00:17:08or pissed off it can make you cry it can
- 00:17:11make you yell it can make you fuming mad
- 00:17:14full of Rage it can make you kill
- 00:17:18somebody because of the meanings that
- 00:17:21your mind assigns to certain
- 00:17:27symbols it's really quite remarkable
- 00:17:29that this is even possible it's amazing
- 00:17:32that symbols even
- 00:17:36exist but you have to also start to
- 00:17:39become conscious that meaning what it is
- 00:17:41is because it is arbitrary it's
- 00:17:42completely arbitrary that meaning is an
- 00:17:48illusion and meanings are some of the
- 00:17:51most meaningful things to
- 00:17:56you what's the meaning of money to
- 00:18:01you what's the meaning of a relationship
- 00:18:03to you what's the meaning of love to you
- 00:18:05what's the meaning of sex to you what's
- 00:18:08the meaning of your car to you or your
- 00:18:10house or your career or your job or how
- 00:18:14people think of you whether they think
- 00:18:15of you as a good person or an evil
- 00:18:19person all of these things are meanings
- 00:18:22that are spun by the
- 00:18:25mind but also you're not aware of what
- 00:18:29they literally are because a thought has
- 00:18:31two components to it so to speak there's
- 00:18:36the content of the thought or the story
- 00:18:39that's contained in it the meaning in
- 00:18:41other words and then there's literally
- 00:18:43what it
- 00:18:45is so if you ever get to the point in
- 00:18:48your life where you're feeling bad and
- 00:18:51depressed or you're having some kind of
- 00:18:53negative emotional reaction your
- 00:18:55suffering one thing that
- 00:18:59might Dawn on
- 00:19:00you if you uh are conscious enough is
- 00:19:03that all of these meanings are not
- 00:19:05actually
- 00:19:10true how can this be the
- 00:19:13case I want to show you with some
- 00:19:15practical examples and I'll give you
- 00:19:17some exercises here but just recognize
- 00:19:19now the significance of this Breaking
- 00:19:22Free from your
- 00:19:24mind requires that you become aware of
- 00:19:28what meaning is and it's illusory
- 00:19:32nature gaining mindfulness over your
- 00:19:36thoughts this is one of the keys to all
- 00:19:40self-improvement work the more mindful
- 00:19:43you are of your thoughts the less
- 00:19:45reactive and the less distressed you
- 00:19:48will be by them because distress and
- 00:19:52suffering is only contained within
- 00:19:55meaning there cannot really be any
- 00:19:57suffering without
- 00:20:00meaning you might think there can be
- 00:20:03like you might think that there could be
- 00:20:04extreme pain and stuff like this but
- 00:20:08that's not really the
- 00:20:09case almost all of your suffering comes
- 00:20:12from meaning and yet at the same time
- 00:20:15meaning is illusory so you're seeing the
- 00:20:17significance of this extremely
- 00:20:19significant this is not philosophy this
- 00:20:21is not just some like interesting
- 00:20:24linguistic theory that I'm giving to you
- 00:20:27very practical
- 00:20:29I want to teach you a little technique
- 00:20:31that I kind of came up with myself I
- 00:20:33call it flattening the
- 00:20:35illusion and I want to train you how to
- 00:20:37use this technique so first we're going
- 00:20:39to train on just some very uh simple
- 00:20:42examples uh that aren't very applicable
- 00:20:44to your life so the first example I'm
- 00:20:46going to show on the screen right now go
- 00:20:48ahead and take a look at
- 00:20:49it so you see a picture now what I want
- 00:20:53you to do is I want you to flatten the
- 00:20:55illusion as I say flatten the illusion
- 00:20:58illusion so notice the meaning that's
- 00:21:01there and notice whatever your mind is
- 00:21:04kind of projecting and
- 00:21:06perceiving of the image and now what I
- 00:21:08want you to do is I want you to just
- 00:21:09flatten it look at it literally what is
- 00:21:11it
- 00:21:16literally so literally it is not a
- 00:21:19three-dimensional Cube literally it's
- 00:21:22some flat markings on a flat
- 00:21:25surface of course you could go even more
- 00:21:28literally you could say Well they're
- 00:21:29just pixels on a computer screen that
- 00:21:31you're looking at that would be an
- 00:21:33additional level of
- 00:21:37literalness but we can even just kind of
- 00:21:39ignore that and just pretend like you're
- 00:21:41looking at it on piece of paper or
- 00:21:42something but look at this literally
- 00:21:44right it's just some
- 00:21:45flat markings on a flat surface there's
- 00:21:49nothing threedimensional about it even
- 00:21:50though it appears threedimensional so we
- 00:21:52might say that the content appears
- 00:21:55three-dimensional that's the illusory
- 00:21:57nature of it the reality of it literally
- 00:21:59is that it's just some uh
- 00:22:01two-dimensional ink on a
- 00:22:05Surface okay good now let's go on to the
- 00:22:07next example so take a look at this
- 00:22:11example this one might be a little more
- 00:22:14tricky For You especially if you have a
- 00:22:18phobia on this issue so take a look at
- 00:22:22this and now notice immediately notice
- 00:22:24if you have any kind of emotional
- 00:22:25reactions in your body or in your mind
- 00:22:30and what I want you to do is I again I
- 00:22:31want you to flatten the
- 00:22:33illusion so make a distinction between
- 00:22:36what's literally there on the screen
- 00:22:38that you're looking at and what your
- 00:22:40mind
- 00:22:42is projecting on to it what it's
- 00:22:45interpreting out of
- 00:22:49it this might mean any labels you assign
- 00:22:52to this object if you assign any labels
- 00:22:54to it or any kind of memories that come
- 00:22:57up or any kind of Association any kind
- 00:22:58of charged emotional reactions you might
- 00:23:01have any kind of feelings of disgust or
- 00:23:05fear or
- 00:23:08avoidance notice all of that is separate
- 00:23:11from what's literally there so flatten
- 00:23:13the illusion right now practice this
- 00:23:16actually do
- 00:23:20it okay so you're seeing what's
- 00:23:23literally
- 00:23:24there and not the content of the picture
- 00:23:29notice that the content is an
- 00:23:35illusion okay good now let's go on to
- 00:23:38the last example of this series so take
- 00:23:41a look at
- 00:23:42this now immediately what I want you to
- 00:23:45do is to notice the difference between
- 00:23:47the content and what's literally there
- 00:23:49so flatten this
- 00:23:51illusion notice any kind of emotional
- 00:23:53reactions you might have had to the
- 00:23:55words written on the screen and how
- 00:23:57maybe you perceive received it in some
- 00:24:00kind of a Charged emotional way maybe
- 00:24:04you related to it in some way that
- 00:24:06offended you or made you feel bad or
- 00:24:09shocked you or whatever notice that
- 00:24:11that's all your stuff that's not what's
- 00:24:14happening on the screen and also notice
- 00:24:17that the words and symbols written on
- 00:24:18the screen notice what those
- 00:24:20are the meaning of those is again
- 00:24:24projected and interpreted by your
- 00:24:26mind so flat Pat the illusion of the
- 00:24:29words on the screen to the point where
- 00:24:31you don't even see them as words
- 00:24:33anymore but just as symbols on the
- 00:24:39screen see the words and the letters for
- 00:24:42what they literally
- 00:24:45are not for what your mind thinks they
- 00:24:51mean okay so flatten that
- 00:24:55illusion okay great so now you got the
- 00:24:58hang of it right pretty simple now the
- 00:25:01trick though is to actually get good at
- 00:25:04flattening the illusion with your
- 00:25:08thoughts cuz your thoughts are just like
- 00:25:11words on a screen or images on a
- 00:25:15screen the problem is that you're not
- 00:25:18very aware of thoughts and it takes
- 00:25:20practice to actually develop
- 00:25:23mindfulness to the point where you don't
- 00:25:25get sucked in and reactive to the
- 00:25:27thoughts that you're having
- 00:25:31in order to flatten something what I
- 00:25:33mean by flattening the illusion
- 00:25:35basically you just ask yourself the
- 00:25:36question what is this thing
- 00:25:39actually what is it literally it's a
- 00:25:42literal way of looking at the world
- 00:25:44without any abstraction or projection or
- 00:25:49any kind of vagueness it's just
- 00:25:51whatever's there is exactly what's there
- 00:25:53and I'm not going to assume anything
- 00:25:55about it I'm not going to Extra any
- 00:25:58meaning out of it I'm not going to
- 00:26:01relate the thing that's there to me in
- 00:26:02any
- 00:26:04way I'm just going to see what's
- 00:26:06literally there so let's try some more
- 00:26:10real world examples with your thoughts
- 00:26:13now flatten the following
- 00:26:18Illusions think of your
- 00:26:21mother get a thought of your mother
- 00:26:24whatever it is might be an image in your
- 00:26:26mind or a story a m whatever comes up
- 00:26:29for you is fine not very important the
- 00:26:31details so think of your mother and now
- 00:26:35flatten that
- 00:26:40illusion can you do it actually do it so
- 00:26:45that you resolve the thought and you
- 00:26:48break down its content and the thought
- 00:26:50loses its content and you can just
- 00:26:52experience the
- 00:26:54thought as a
- 00:26:56um you might say just a sensation in
- 00:26:59your
- 00:27:01mind cuz that's what a thought literally
- 00:27:03is a thought is real in the sense that
- 00:27:06it has a certain feeling or a sensation
- 00:27:09to it like if you have an image of your
- 00:27:11mom's face that's
- 00:27:14real but it's not your mom's face you
- 00:27:18see in the same way that if I write a
- 00:27:22word like cat the word cat is real but
- 00:27:26it's not a cat
- 00:27:33this takes practice so let's do another
- 00:27:35one think of
- 00:27:37gravity whatever idea or concept you
- 00:27:40have of gravity bring it up to
- 00:27:44mind now if I ask you is gravity real
- 00:27:47you would say yes it is of course it is
- 00:27:50but now what I want you to do is just uh
- 00:27:51take this concept of gravity and flatten
- 00:27:54the
- 00:27:55illusion what is gravity actually
- 00:27:59you might say well gravity is a force in
- 00:28:01real life no what is actually the
- 00:28:04thought of
- 00:28:08gravity flatten that
- 00:28:12illusion notice what gravity literally
- 00:28:15is in your
- 00:28:16mind gravity is not a force in the
- 00:28:19physical world gravity is a concept in
- 00:28:22your mind now flatten
- 00:28:25that and see that go from thinking of
- 00:28:29gravity as a real force in the real
- 00:28:31world into seeing it as a sensation in
- 00:28:33your
- 00:28:34mind because that is what literally
- 00:28:37gravity is it's a sensation in your
- 00:28:40mind and I don't mean the sensation of
- 00:28:42the weight of your body I mean the
- 00:28:45sensation of your idea of
- 00:28:48gravity because gravity is an idea
- 00:28:51that's literally what it
- 00:28:55is okay
- 00:28:58now we'll try something a little
- 00:29:00trickier bring to mind your idea of the
- 00:29:04external world so think about the
- 00:29:06external world the fact that there is an
- 00:29:08external world that exists so if you
- 00:29:10close your eyes you think there's an
- 00:29:13external world right you don't think the
- 00:29:14world disappears do you probably not
- 00:29:18so bring to mind the external
- 00:29:21world now normally people would say well
- 00:29:23the external world is a real thing it's
- 00:29:25the most real thing there is but take a
- 00:29:28look at what the external World
- 00:29:29literally is flatten that
- 00:29:34illusion the external world is not an
- 00:29:38external world the external world is a
- 00:29:41thought in your mind it's a sensation in
- 00:29:44your mind that you experience so notice
- 00:29:47it for what it literally
- 00:29:53is got it good let's move on to the next
- 00:29:56one think of
- 00:29:59God whether you do believe or God in God
- 00:30:02or don't believe in God doesn't matter
- 00:30:06just bring to mind the idea of God or
- 00:30:08whatever you think God
- 00:30:12is okay now flatten the illusion of
- 00:30:19god notice what God literally is
- 00:30:28notice that you might have a resistance
- 00:30:30to flattening the illusion of God you
- 00:30:33may not want to see God as what God
- 00:30:36literally is because you've been telling
- 00:30:40yourself part of the illusion of God is
- 00:30:43that no God is real God is out there
- 00:30:46God's not in my
- 00:30:50head God's not an
- 00:30:56idea that one might be tricky for you if
- 00:30:59you're an atheist that's a really easy
- 00:31:01one for you cuz you already believe that
- 00:31:03God is an
- 00:31:04idea but that's a whole can of worms I'm
- 00:31:07not going to go into
- 00:31:10here okay and now what I want you to do
- 00:31:13and this is the trickiest one of all be
- 00:31:15real careful about this one think of
- 00:31:18yourself you not just the thought of you
- 00:31:22but literally you who are you what are
- 00:31:24you think of yourself the most truest
- 00:31:28sense of yourself that you have bring
- 00:31:29that to
- 00:31:30mind okay got it now flatten the
- 00:31:34illusion of
- 00:31:39yourself yeah that's a tricky
- 00:31:44one you might have some resistance to
- 00:31:46doing that one that one's even harder to
- 00:31:49do than
- 00:31:52God cuz you do think you're
- 00:31:55yourself and part of the illusion of
- 00:31:57being yourself is thinking that you're
- 00:32:00not an idea but that you're really
- 00:32:03yourself you're
- 00:32:05real but what is
- 00:32:08yourself really
- 00:32:10literally look at this very objectively
- 00:32:13don't let your mind
- 00:32:16you flatten the illusion of
- 00:32:22yourself okay got it good now that one
- 00:32:26might take you some more practice to
- 00:32:28really get down it's a really tricky
- 00:32:31tricky
- 00:32:32one so anyways these are all exercises
- 00:32:35that force your mind to see reality
- 00:32:38literally and to deconstruct your
- 00:32:40thoughts into what they literally are
- 00:32:42versus seeing the story the content or
- 00:32:44the image of the
- 00:32:47thoughts I really like um to draw the
- 00:32:51analogy between what we're doing here
- 00:32:53and what artists are taught to do when
- 00:32:55they learn to draw so a good good artist
- 00:32:58and if you go to a art class what uh
- 00:33:01they'll teach you if you want to become
- 00:33:03a good drawer is they'll sit you down
- 00:33:06there there's going to be like a still
- 00:33:07life like there's going to be a maybe a
- 00:33:08flower pot with a vase and uh maybe a
- 00:33:11bowl of fruit and it's going to be
- 00:33:13nicely lit and you're going to be
- 00:33:14sitting there with the whole class
- 00:33:15you're going to be drawing this thing
- 00:33:16they're going to ask you to draw that as
- 00:33:18accurately as you can just with a pencil
- 00:33:20and piece of paper you know very simple
- 00:33:22and the instruction that they'll give
- 00:33:25you to make you a good drawer is they'll
- 00:33:27tell you draw not what you think is
- 00:33:30there but literally what you
- 00:33:34see and that's kind of what we're
- 00:33:37telling you to do
- 00:33:40here don't think abstractly about what
- 00:33:44God is or what your mom is or what
- 00:33:46gravity is or what you are but literally
- 00:33:49just become mindful of what exactly is
- 00:33:51happening in your experience in order to
- 00:33:53even render the story of God gravity
- 00:33:57external world yourself or your
- 00:34:00mom see and a good artist at first it's
- 00:34:04very difficult because you might think
- 00:34:06that when you're drawing something it's
- 00:34:08like well yeah I already know what's
- 00:34:09there but what you quickly realize if
- 00:34:11you go to one of these classes is like
- 00:34:12no you don't know what you're drawing is
- 00:34:15you're kind of drawing your idea your
- 00:34:16image your abstract fantasy of what's
- 00:34:19there when you literally draw what's
- 00:34:21there it's a totally different
- 00:34:25experience even though the thing you're
- 00:34:27looking at didn't really
- 00:34:29change it's the same thing with becoming
- 00:34:31more mindful of your thoughts so this
- 00:34:34entire episode what I'm talking about is
- 00:34:36how to become more mindful of your
- 00:34:39thoughts and hopefully this is starting
- 00:34:41to show you the power of
- 00:34:43mindfulness now mindfulness doesn't just
- 00:34:46apply to thoughts you can apply
- 00:34:47mindfulness to feelings Sensations
- 00:34:50emotions all sorts of
- 00:34:52stuff sights and sounds but the most
- 00:34:55important thing that you can apply
- 00:34:57mindfulness to is your thoughts because
- 00:34:59your thoughts construct all the meanings
- 00:35:02in your life what would your life be
- 00:35:04without meaning it would be
- 00:35:06unrecognizable to
- 00:35:08you and all the problems you have in
- 00:35:10your life what do you think those are
- 00:35:12those come from
- 00:35:14meaning without meaning there cannot be
- 00:35:16a problem do you understand this a
- 00:35:18problem is a meaning it's a specific
- 00:35:21type of meaning that you assign to a
- 00:35:23specific type of situation and then you
- 00:35:25tell yourself well the meaning is baked
- 00:35:27into the situation you know I'm angry
- 00:35:29because that person did something to me
- 00:35:32or I'm afraid because I really don't
- 00:35:34have enough money in my bank account to
- 00:35:36pay my mortgage next
- 00:35:38month you tell yourself that but that's
- 00:35:40just more layers of meaning you see it's
- 00:35:43like meaning masking meaning masking
- 00:35:45meaning masking meaning that's what's so
- 00:35:47dangerous about Thoughts with a picture
- 00:35:49it's really simple to see that a
- 00:35:50photograph of a piece of pizza is not
- 00:35:52going to feed your hunger that's easy
- 00:35:54enough to
- 00:35:55see but with thoughts you can't can't
- 00:35:57see this because the thoughts just come
- 00:36:00one on top of the next on top of the
- 00:36:02next on top of the next and you just
- 00:36:04believe every single thought that comes
- 00:36:06without questioning them without looking
- 00:36:08at them very carefully and so pretty
- 00:36:11quickly you're overrun by thoughts and
- 00:36:13you're just lost in the middle of a vast
- 00:36:16ocean of thoughts and then you start to
- 00:36:19drown and you really believe because
- 00:36:22you're surrounded completely by thoughts
- 00:36:24that your reality becomes thoughts you
- 00:36:27live in an augmented reality and then
- 00:36:29from this many of your problems in life
- 00:36:32come if you're shy the only reason
- 00:36:35you're shy is because of thoughts
- 00:36:38thoughts make you shy the real world
- 00:36:40doesn't make you shy it doesn't make
- 00:36:41anybody shy if you're afraid of
- 00:36:43something the only reason you're afraid
- 00:36:44of something is
- 00:36:45because you're lost in a sea of thoughts
- 00:36:49the real world rarely like if a lion
- 00:36:52jumps out at you from the middle of
- 00:36:53nowhere yeah you're going to have some
- 00:36:55kind of like really um uh lowlevel
- 00:36:58Reptilian Brain response to that so from
- 00:37:01there you can have kind of a chemical
- 00:37:02fear but most of your fears are not like
- 00:37:05that most of your fears are these higher
- 00:37:07order fears that are coming from uh
- 00:37:11conceptual interpretations of
- 00:37:14reality same thing with anger and
- 00:37:17depression and frustration and annoyance
- 00:37:20and every other emotion you don't like
- 00:37:23and similarly with the Positive emotions
- 00:37:26a lot of those are are stemming from the
- 00:37:28meanings that you assign to objects and
- 00:37:31situations in the world so can you see
- 00:37:33the potential power of gaining Mastery
- 00:37:37over the way in which you assign meaning
- 00:37:40to
- 00:37:42things very powerful the trick is that
- 00:37:45it requires
- 00:37:46practice this is not something you just
- 00:37:48kind of like watch a video about it or
- 00:37:51listen to me talk about it for an hour
- 00:37:53or so and it's like yep I got it Leo and
- 00:37:55now I can go and apply it and now I
- 00:37:56don't have any more fears or anger any
- 00:37:59uh uh depression or anything like that
- 00:38:01it's not going to work that quickly for
- 00:38:02you because you've got so many meanings
- 00:38:05you've got this giant web of meanings
- 00:38:08wrapped in another web of meanings
- 00:38:10wrapped in another web of meanings that
- 00:38:12you're just totally lost you're totally
- 00:38:14lost and it's going to take you
- 00:38:17practice to unravel this web of meanings
- 00:38:20that you've
- 00:38:22created but can you see the potential
- 00:38:25value of making this investment in
- 00:38:26practicing learning how to do this you
- 00:38:29might not immediately resolve all your
- 00:38:31problems but can you see that over time
- 00:38:34if you spend a few months or a few years
- 00:38:36practicing this that over time you're
- 00:38:38going to develop the
- 00:38:41mental facility or ability
- 00:38:47to kind of become the master of your own
- 00:38:50mind and your own
- 00:38:52meanings and you can become extremely
- 00:38:55good at this you can become so good at
- 00:38:57this that literally you can melt
- 00:38:58problems away just completely dissolve
- 00:39:02them but that'll take some doing so how
- 00:39:05do you do this how do you practice this
- 00:39:07well let me give you an assignment what
- 00:39:08I want you to do over the next week if
- 00:39:10you accept this challenge is I want you
- 00:39:13to commit to the following I want you to
- 00:39:16flatten 50 illusions that actually occur
- 00:39:19in your everyday experience so regular
- 00:39:21stuff not just made up examples kind of
- 00:39:23like what I made up here but real
- 00:39:26stuff 50 Illusions over the next week
- 00:39:29and by Illusions I mean thoughts
- 00:39:31thoughts that you have you're going to
- 00:39:32flatten 50 of them and each one you're
- 00:39:35going to write down carefully and
- 00:39:36accurately in a journal so let me give
- 00:39:38you three examples of how this might
- 00:39:40work so let's say tomorrow I go to work
- 00:39:43and something happens at work and I
- 00:39:44really hate my boss so I really feel
- 00:39:47like oh I Hate My Boss he's such an
- 00:39:50okay good so number one so I
- 00:39:53write this in my journal number one I
- 00:39:55Hate My Boss that's came up as a thought
- 00:39:59I noticed it okay I wrote that down now
- 00:40:01what I want you to do is to break that
- 00:40:02down into two components one component
- 00:40:04is the content and the other component
- 00:40:07is what it literally is so I Hate My
- 00:40:09Boss what's the content of that well the
- 00:40:11content of that is the meaning I assign
- 00:40:13to it so something like my boss is a
- 00:40:15complete
- 00:40:17idiot
- 00:40:20and I wish he was fired like that's the
- 00:40:23content that's the
- 00:40:25story but what is it literally
- 00:40:30literally in your mind as it's happening
- 00:40:31what is it so there you might write down
- 00:40:34something
- 00:40:35like image of
- 00:40:38boss with a stupid
- 00:40:42face image of Boss getting
- 00:40:47fired feeling in my chest of contraction
- 00:40:51and heating because that's the emotional
- 00:40:54component right so a Charged thought is
- 00:40:57not just a mental image but it's also
- 00:41:00like probably a constriction in your
- 00:41:02body somewhere some kind of tension so
- 00:41:04write that down as well that's literally
- 00:41:06what that
- 00:41:08is so that's an example of flattening
- 00:41:10the illusion now let's give you a second
- 00:41:13example let's say that you're going
- 00:41:14about your day and you're in a crowd of
- 00:41:16people and all of a sudden you feel shy
- 00:41:18and
- 00:41:21insecure what's the content of that so
- 00:41:23you write that down number two I am shy
- 00:41:25let's say that that's your thought
- 00:41:27what's the content there the content
- 00:41:29there is that it's something like well
- 00:41:30I'm always insecure in groups you know I
- 00:41:32really feel bad about being shy all the
- 00:41:34time I wish I wasn't shy that's the
- 00:41:38content what is it
- 00:41:40literally literally it might be
- 00:41:42something
- 00:41:43like butterflies in your
- 00:41:47stomach
- 00:41:50uh feeling the pumping of your blood
- 00:41:53through your veins and your arms and in
- 00:41:54your neck
- 00:41:57and it might also be a kind of a feeling
- 00:41:59of sadness and
- 00:42:01depression and an image of you being
- 00:42:05weak and awkward looking and everybody
- 00:42:07laughing at you you know maybe you have
- 00:42:08that kind of image in your mind and also
- 00:42:11the sound of I am shy or why am I so
- 00:42:17shy why was I born this way that might
- 00:42:20be literally what this thing
- 00:42:24is okay got that and then the third
- 00:42:28example is something like let's say
- 00:42:30you're going about your day and you have
- 00:42:33this idea of like oh you know I'm
- 00:42:34listening to all these actualized.org
- 00:42:36videos and I really have a a plan for my
- 00:42:39life I'm going to be rich I really want
- 00:42:40to be rich I have this goal of becoming
- 00:42:44rich I want to be a millionaire and I
- 00:42:46want to drive around in
- 00:42:48BMW okay so you're write that down
- 00:42:51number three in your Journal I am going
- 00:42:54to be rich
- 00:42:57write that down that's your thought and
- 00:43:00now what's the content of
- 00:43:01that the content is something like I'm
- 00:43:05gonna have a million dollars and drive
- 00:43:06around in a
- 00:43:08BMW
- 00:43:10okay and what's literally going on there
- 00:43:13in that thought well you probably have
- 00:43:15an image of you with a big you know
- 00:43:17stack of dollar bills or maybe it's in a
- 00:43:21briefcase or maybe you're picturing
- 00:43:23digits in your bank account like seven
- 00:43:25digits in your bank account and and also
- 00:43:27you're picturing yourself driving down
- 00:43:29the coast uh you know of California in a
- 00:43:33BMW and it's kind of like silver colored
- 00:43:35or red colored whatever color you
- 00:43:38want and also you've got this kind of
- 00:43:40like positive light bubbly feeling
- 00:43:42somewhere in your chest kind of that's
- 00:43:45kind of like the happiness component
- 00:43:46because this this is a goal of yours so
- 00:43:48it probably makes you happy to to
- 00:43:50picture yourself this way so that's
- 00:43:52literally what this thing
- 00:43:54is notice that there's a big difference
- 00:43:56between between what it literally is and
- 00:43:58the content that you attribute to it the
- 00:44:00meaning of it big
- 00:44:03difference so those are three examples I
- 00:44:06want you to come up with 50 of these
- 00:44:08from your real life over the next week
- 00:44:11this will take some commitment from you
- 00:44:13because you'll easily forget so make
- 00:44:14sure that if you want to do this you
- 00:44:16really commit to it and maybe set a
- 00:44:18reminder for yourself so that
- 00:44:21you're uh not forgetting every single
- 00:44:23morning that you wake up that this is
- 00:44:24what you're doing and keep your journal
- 00:44:26with you throughout the day and write
- 00:44:27this stuff down take it to work or to
- 00:44:29school wherever you go I guarantee that
- 00:44:32if you do this 50 times over the next
- 00:44:34week you're going to have some pretty
- 00:44:35interesting insights and already this
- 00:44:38giant condensed web of beliefs you have
- 00:44:40and all these meanings about how bad
- 00:44:42your life is and how you can't do this
- 00:44:44and how you feel deficient in this area
- 00:44:47it's going to start to
- 00:44:49unravel not
- 00:44:50totally but you're going to start to see
- 00:44:53the potential of this and hopefully what
- 00:44:56it'll do is it'll just kind of get you
- 00:44:57to buy into the idea that mindfulness is
- 00:45:00important and that understanding what
- 00:45:02thoughts are import is important and
- 00:45:04maybe it'll show you how poor your
- 00:45:05mindfulness skills are maybe it'll
- 00:45:08demonstrate to you that man you know I
- 00:45:11thought I knew what was going on in my
- 00:45:12mind but really I have no freaking clue
- 00:45:14what's going on in my mind I'm not even
- 00:45:17sure what a thought is what is a
- 00:45:20thought do this exercise 50
- 00:45:23times and you'll just get to the point
- 00:45:26where you'll be like oh my God I can't
- 00:45:29believe I don't even know what a thought
- 00:45:34is and that's true you don't know what a
- 00:45:36thought is and doing 50 of these
- 00:45:40examples is not going to reveal to you
- 00:45:43what a thought is that's going to take
- 00:45:45many hundreds of hours more of
- 00:45:49work but remember how powerful this is
- 00:45:53this is one of the keys to all personal
- 00:45:56development this is one of the keys to
- 00:45:58unlocking your entire
- 00:46:00mind so don't treat this casually don't
- 00:46:03expect this to come easy and
- 00:46:05effortlessly for you you're going to
- 00:46:06struggle a lot with this but also
- 00:46:08remember that you're shooting for
- 00:46:10something big here if you actually do
- 00:46:12ever become fully mindful of what a
- 00:46:15thought
- 00:46:19is that will be huge for you
- 00:46:23huge that will be more valuable to you
- 00:46:25than all the self help books you could
- 00:46:27read in 5
- 00:46:30years but it can't be a belief it can't
- 00:46:33be an idea it can't be a theory of yours
- 00:46:35can't be an ideology you can't turn it
- 00:46:37into a Dogma you have to actually
- 00:46:39practice this is a skill this is a skill
- 00:46:42no different than uh hitting a golf ball
- 00:46:45well or doing a good tennis
- 00:46:50serve or uh you know skiing excellently
- 00:46:53down a mountain without falling down
- 00:46:56these are all like pH physical skills
- 00:46:58and so is the awareness of your mind and
- 00:47:01of your thought process you could think
- 00:47:05of it almost like a physical skill like
- 00:47:07playing the piano and right now you're a
- 00:47:10horrible
- 00:47:12pianist there in lies one of your
- 00:47:14biggest problems in life the problem is
- 00:47:16that you have thoughts that tell you
- 00:47:17that you're an excellent pianist and
- 00:47:19that you don't need to learn how to play
- 00:47:20the piano because you're just a natural
- 00:47:22at it you were born good you were born
- 00:47:24knowing how to think so naturally you
- 00:47:26should know what thoughts are but this
- 00:47:28is a very dangerous thought to
- 00:47:33have and maybe one day you can become
- 00:47:35mindful of the fact that you have that
- 00:47:37thought and then you can flatten it and
- 00:47:39see what it really
- 00:47:41is you know see that and if you want to
- 00:47:45take this to deeper levels read up on
- 00:47:47mindfulness I have some powerful
- 00:47:50videos and additional episodes that talk
- 00:47:53about mindfulness meditation how to
- 00:47:55practice it how to set set up a habit of
- 00:47:57developing a little bit more mindfulness
- 00:47:59every single day you can also try
- 00:48:01different forms of meditation that can
- 00:48:03build up mindfulness you can also watch
- 00:48:05some of my uh other episodes that go
- 00:48:08into depth into revealing the illusory
- 00:48:11nature of your mind and how your mind
- 00:48:13really works you know I talk about what
- 00:48:15emotions are and how they work I talk
- 00:48:17about what thoughts are and how they
- 00:48:19work and uh many many other things like
- 00:48:22this so this is a whole field for you
- 00:48:25right this is just the beginning this is
- 00:48:27just the opening of a little door that
