- 00:00:36and yes this was a Jedi mind
- 00:00:38trick might be worthless what but uh but
- 00:00:42they cost money and I expect them to
- 00:00:43work let's dig in and make sure we're
- 00:00:46using the right stuff and not the wrong
- 00:00:48stuff so it turns out that most
- 00:00:50supplements when you walk into a normal
- 00:00:52health food store you know like where
- 00:00:54the lady that sells them is very sweet
- 00:00:56but clearly peaked in the' 70s as far as
- 00:00:58her intellectual understanding of the
- 00:01:00world she has um you know all her
- 00:01:02astrological signs on display that sort
- 00:01:04of
- 00:01:05thing most of those supplements in that
- 00:01:08store most 90 some percent do nothing
- 00:01:11measurable in the human body whatsoever
- 00:01:13I know it sucks but she's a sweet lady a
- 00:01:16lot of people in the fitness industry
- 00:01:18especially in the evidence-based sphere
- 00:01:19kind of know that part already like okay
- 00:01:21find all these grasses or whatever these
- 00:01:23African roots and flowers don't do shit
- 00:01:25fine we knew that but Fitness folks
- 00:01:30still use some supplements and still
- 00:01:32discuss some supplements on Moss at
- 00:01:35large that do hardly anything at all or
- 00:01:39possibly nothing and this isn't just me
- 00:01:42on swag points this is measured
- 00:01:44scientific studies that say this doesn't
- 00:01:46do anything many of them almost all of
- 00:01:49them so I'm going to give you four
- 00:01:52supplements today and we're going to
- 00:01:53chat about each one of these four
- 00:01:54supplements that maybe you could stop
- 00:01:57taking or consider stopping taking so
- 00:01:58you can stop wasting your money because
- 00:02:01above all else even though I'm an
- 00:02:02exercise science professional I'm also
- 00:02:04genetically a Jewish which means if
- 00:02:07you're wasting money it hurts me
- 00:02:08personally a deep level maybe it'll be
- 00:02:11even difficult for you to comprehend so
- 00:02:13let's go through this list first on our
- 00:02:16list and sorry if I hit up your
- 00:02:17favorites might be you know you can't

- 00:02:55translation so it's it's not only
- 00:02:56insulting but it's also grotesquely
- 00:02:58impersonal like oh what the Mr Korean
- 00:03:00man said was that you're just not pretty
- 00:03:02enough straight up sorry your voice also

- 00:03:26want to make amino acid powders the
- 00:03:29these are powders sometimes
- 00:03:31drinks usually made from a protein
- 00:03:34Source like whey protein but broken down
- 00:03:37into individual amino acids for you
- 00:03:39because whey protein is a bunch of amino
- 00:03:41acids in a string really in kind of a
- 00:03:43curled up string but the string uncurls
- 00:03:45in your stomach gets chopped up so on
- 00:03:46and so forth so the individual amino
- 00:03:48acids that make up a protein it sounds
- 00:03:51dope because they broke up the amino
- 00:03:53acids for you and it's like they did you
- 00:03:55a real solid you don't have to break
- 00:03:57them down yourself but it turns out that
- 00:03:59your body actually has receptors in your
- 00:04:02intestinal lining for multiple amino
- 00:04:05acids and groups of amino acids to
- 00:04:07translocate at the same time which means
- 00:04:11that in reality you can absorb actual
- 00:04:14undigested weight protein that you eat
- 00:04:17and digest yourself better and more
- 00:04:20completely and faster than you can
- 00:04:22absorb individual predigested amino
- 00:04:24acids this something we've known for a
- 00:04:26really long time by the way which is
- 00:04:28curious because people still say sell
- 00:04:29individual amino acids because people
- 00:04:31still buy them so if you take an
- 00:04:34individual amino acid shake like you
- 00:04:36know aminos or whatever versus just whey
- 00:04:38protein then you're actually paying
- 00:04:41extra for a less effective product and
- 00:04:44at best a similarly effective product
- 00:04:46but you're paying more money um Amino
- 00:04:48products are nearly categorically more
- 00:04:50expensive than whey because if you think
- 00:04:53about it just packaging wayy and sending
- 00:04:54it off is dope but if they have to break
- 00:04:56the wayy down into the aminos they going
- 00:04:58to be charging you for that stuff
- 00:05:00because it costs them money to do it the
- 00:05:01factory and it gets to be labeled as
- 00:05:03more exotic Etc more quote unquote high
- 00:05:05quality so you get charged more money
- 00:05:08not ideal the best thing to do in this
- 00:05:10case folks and this is kind of one of
- 00:05:11these things that's like really but it's
- 00:05:13kind of cool in the end my
- 00:05:15recommendation is to stick with whey
- 00:05:17proteins if you're going to be having
- 00:05:19those and forget the individual amino
- 00:05:21acid stuff whey concentrate is totally
- 00:05:23cool isolate's totally cool hydraulis
- 00:05:26totally cool blg is totally cool and all
- 00:05:29of those are totally fine just pick one
- 00:05:31which you like the taste you like the
- 00:05:33price and it sits well with you
- 00:05:34digestively if that's the deal you just
- 00:05:36don't need individual amino acids broken
- 00:05:38down for you so you can skip the aminos
- 00:05:41save your money and potentially not
- 00:05:43spend your money on this next thing
- 00:05:45which is our number two overrated
- 00:05:47supplement and this might hurt some
- 00:05:49feelings

- 00:05:51here beta alanine I know I know stay
- 00:05:54calm I can explain beta alanine is an
- 00:05:58awesome supplement for Middle distance
- 00:05:59performance athletes like 400 to 1600
- 00:06:02meter Runners because it helps a little
- 00:06:05bit with locally buffering the acids
- 00:06:07that sum up when you're trying really
- 00:06:09really hard it can thus improve your
- 00:06:12anerobic endurance to put this in
- 00:06:14layman's terms if you run as fast as you
- 00:06:17can for 400600 meters with no pacing
- 00:06:20whatsoever at some point you're going to
- 00:06:22cramp unbelievably hard because the
- 00:06:24amino the sorry Amino the acid
- 00:06:26concentration in your muscles Rises so
- 00:06:28high that it just leavs your muscles to
- 00:06:30to cramp up and just do nothing else
- 00:06:32that cramping is preceded by an insane
- 00:06:35burning sensation which all of us have
- 00:06:37known from high rep lifting and if
- 00:06:38you've ever done middle distance running
- 00:06:40uh or longer Sprints you know how that
- 00:06:42feels what beta alanine does is if you
- 00:06:45take it for a long while and I mean
- 00:06:47weeks and months in a row because it
- 00:06:49slowly adds up on your cells it's not
- 00:06:51something you get an effect of right
- 00:06:52then and there what you can do is push
- 00:06:54back when that burn hits and push back
- 00:06:57when you cramp and fall over by several
- 00:07:00seconds now several seconds I don't know
- 00:07:02how that matters at all in lifting
- 00:07:04probably doesn't which is probably why
- 00:07:06I'm saying you don't have to use it in
- 00:07:07lifting but in competitive middle
- 00:07:09distance running several seconds of
- 00:07:11being able to push the pace before
- 00:07:13having to be like oh crap like this
- 00:07:15isn't sustainable means you can
- 00:07:17literally cut several seconds off of
- 00:07:19your best times which if you're a highly
- 00:07:21competitive athlete man that makes a ton
- 00:07:24of sense if you're a soccer player at a
- 00:07:26decently high level being on beta
- 00:07:28alanine for the season means that you
- 00:07:30have just a bit more juice at the end of
- 00:07:31all of your WR long Sprints you're not
- 00:07:33quite as tired towards the end of the
- 00:07:34game that's a big deal for performance
- 00:07:36athletes so that's awesome but remember
- 00:07:40those are longer term cumulative effects
- 00:07:41that only result after weeks and weeks
- 00:07:44of taking the supplements there are
- 00:07:45studies that show elevation of levels 12
- 00:07:47weeks and longer of taking the
- 00:07:49supplement so it's not something that
- 00:07:52you're going to take and then
- 00:07:53immediately get the results of matter of
- 00:07:55fact you take it you immediately get
- 00:07:56almost nothing except you get that skin
- 00:07:58tingling sensation which people like in
- 00:08:00their pre-workouts sorry to be the
- 00:08:02bearer of bad news that skin tingling
- 00:08:04doesn't really mean anything it means
- 00:08:05your skin is tingling and you can feel
- 00:08:07like your pre-workouts working but by
- 00:08:09working we mean just tingling your skin
- 00:08:11and doing nothing else unless you take
- 00:08:12it for weeks and weeks and weeks and
- 00:08:14weeks and the levels add up so from the
- 00:08:16direct research literature and they've
- 00:08:18done plenty of studies in this it's just
- 00:08:20not clear if beta alanine helps you gain
- 00:08:22muscle some of the study say it might
- 00:08:24help you again a little a lot of the
- 00:08:25study say it doesn't do really anything
- 00:08:27if I had to give you a real good case
- 00:08:29for using your money it would not be
- 00:08:31beta Allen right imagine if someone uh
- 00:08:33you go to a car dealership and you're
- 00:08:34like hey like um is that car like uh
- 00:08:38dependably safe like has it been tested
- 00:08:40and the guy goes it could be safe but
- 00:08:43we're not sure what the hell would you
- 00:08:44buy that thing for same with beta
- 00:08:46alanine it's totally safe but it could
- 00:08:48help you with muscle gain but the
- 00:08:50literature is just insanely unconvincing
- 00:08:52so the direct data leaves a lot to be
- 00:08:54desired
- 00:08:56and logically you know we have some
- 00:08:59reason to believe through animal models
- 00:09:02uh through some human uh situations not
- 00:09:04a ton of data but some decent H hypo
- 00:09:06hypothetical uh kind of uh logic there
- 00:09:10to believe that the summation of
- 00:09:12metabolics the burn itself might grow a
- 00:09:14little bit of muscle for you might
- 00:09:16stimulate some muscle growth so beta
- 00:09:18alanine actually like um reduces that
- 00:09:20and so there's kind of a little bit of
- 00:09:21counter logic there like why would you
- 00:09:23take something that buffers out your
- 00:09:24metabolites if the metabolites are the
- 00:09:26things you want to grow anyway not a
- 00:09:29really solid reason to dunk metabolites
- 00:09:32uh or sorry to to not do beta alanine by
- 00:09:35itself but if the reasoning for doing
- 00:09:38beta alanine was really strong and the
- 00:09:40data just wasn't that great you could be
- 00:09:41like well okay I'm comfortable with
- 00:09:42reasoning itself I'll take a risk or
- 00:09:43I'll take a chance but if even the
- 00:09:45reasoning doesn't make sense and maybe
- 00:09:47slightly backwards if you think about it
- 00:09:48there's other ways to think about it
- 00:09:49that rationalizes it but it's just not a
- 00:09:51good start so what I would say is this
- 00:09:53just buy creatine instead uh because
- 00:09:56while beta alanine might have some
- 00:09:57upsides the upsides for getting you
- 00:09:59jacked which is more muscular and leaner
- 00:10:01Etc just might not exist and things cost
- 00:10:04money so it would say this is not a
- 00:10:06supplement you want to go to all the
- 00:10:07time and a lot of people buy it and
- 00:10:09probably shouldn't be all right number
- 00:10:11three branched chain amino acids AKA
- 00:10:15bcas veine Lucine and isol leucine there
- 00:10:19are three of them they have been studied
- 00:10:22into the ground extensively dozens and
- 00:10:25dozens and dozens of research studies on
- 00:10:26these which is cool so we know a lot
- 00:10:28about them and they are very
- 00:10:31anti-catabolic they profoundly reduce
- 00:10:35the experienced muscle loss you have in
- 00:10:37the several hours after you drink them
- 00:10:40which is really
- 00:10:41awesome right well there are two
- 00:10:44problems with
- 00:10:45this one is that they are very
- 00:10:47anti-catabolic they prevent muscle loss
- 00:10:50but they are not remotely pro-anabolic
- 00:10:52they don't actually Supply the amino
- 00:10:54acids you need to grow muscle and so
- 00:10:57they don't really help you gain muscle
- 00:10:59they can help you reduce muscle loss and
- 00:11:01you're saying like wait a minute that's
- 00:11:02one of your two detraction points how's
- 00:11:05that a detraction they still help you
- 00:11:06prevent muscle loss isn't that good it
- 00:11:09is but check this out if you consume
- 00:11:11whey egg casan and many other complete
- 00:11:15proteins which are composed of BCAAs and
- 00:11:18all of the other amino
- 00:11:21acids these protein sources not only
- 00:11:24reduce muscle loss just as well as only
- 00:11:27bcas taken by themselves but they also
- 00:11:30help grow muscle in addition to that in
- 00:11:33a sense buying BCAAs is like buying a
- 00:11:36car without a roof or a trunk yeah it
- 00:11:38does some car stuff you can go places
- 00:11:41with it it has an indicator light it has
- 00:11:43an engine it has wheels has a steering
- 00:11:45wheel but everything that car does it
- 00:11:49does at least as well as or worse than a
- 00:11:52normal car and nothing better so if you
- 00:11:56are to get in we protein
- 00:11:59that is you already have a normal car
- 00:12:01you already get enough bcas and better
- 00:12:04effects still so if you're consuming
- 00:12:06whey protein and many other complete
- 00:12:08protein sources you already checking the
- 00:12:09box of bcas and all the boxes of the
- 00:12:11other amino acids that help you grow
- 00:12:13muscle and do all the other wonderful
- 00:12:14things proteins do so it's like if you
- 00:12:17already have a car at home that has a
- 00:12:19trunk and has a roof over it and
- 00:12:21someone's like hey I want to sell you a
- 00:12:22car that has not two of these things but
- 00:12:24everything else you're like why hell
- 00:12:25would I do that which is exactly why
- 00:12:27bcas don't make a ton of sense to buy
- 00:12:30right now some people say good news bcas
- 00:12:33are pretty cheap but the reality is that
- 00:12:35a lot of BCA products kind of cost a lot
- 00:12:38of money and any money spent on BCAAs
- 00:12:41where you could have just stuck to your
- 00:12:42wayy protein supplement that you take
- 00:12:45anyway it's just kind of money burned
- 00:12:47out to the wind now I know some people
- 00:12:49get cheap bcas your boy when I used to
- 00:12:51take bcas I never do the cheap thing let
- 00:12:54me tell you my formula for how I get in
- 00:12:56my
- 00:12:57BC first of all only goats milk everyone
- 00:13:00knows that goats milk's better than
- 00:13:01cow's milk and by knows I mean feels and
- 00:13:03by feels I mean has consumed way too
- 00:13:05much naturalistic BS but goats weigh
- 00:13:09only and for my personal goats only I
- 00:13:12don't trust anyone else except for me
- 00:13:13and my
- 00:13:14goats and these are genetically modified
- 00:13:17goats that have uh a fur that's made
- 00:13:22entirely of Platinum Platinum first
- 00:13:24strands because your boy doesn't f with
- 00:13:25that gold or Diamond bullshit that's for
- 00:13:27poor people to deal with and these goats
- 00:13:30of mine which I know personally by name
- 00:13:33are open pasture farmed
- 00:13:36sustainably inside of one of my oil

- 00:17:03at all because you get tons of glutamine

- 00:17:06eat and it is not a limiting factor if
- 00:17:08you have not diagnosed intestinal lining
- 00:17:12disease glutamine also helps support the
- 00:17:14mucosal barrier which does all kinds of
- 00:17:16really good stuff helps protect the
- 00:17:18intestines and glutamine even helps
- 00:17:20maintain the tight junctions between
- 00:17:21your intestinal cells so if you have
- 00:17:24leaky gut glutamine can actually reduce
- 00:17:27that impact of that disease if you do
- 00:17:29not have leaky gut glutamine again does
- 00:17:32functionally nothing
- 00:17:33whatsoever in study after study we have
- 00:17:37found as a scientific community that if
- 00:17:39you don't have digestive problems
- 00:17:41glutamine doesn't help you with your gut
- 00:17:43and on top of the gut stuff which is all
- 00:17:46good and well if you have those problems
- 00:17:48glutamine does not grow muscle glutamine
- 00:17:51is just one amino acid and is usually
- 00:17:54usually I said that I'll say it even
- 00:17:57stronger it is almost never the limiting
- 00:17:59factor amino acid in protein
- 00:18:00construction for your body it's kind of
- 00:18:03like you have uh you're building a house
- 00:18:05and you have piles of metal piles of
- 00:18:07electrical wire piles of bricks uh
- 00:18:09little sheets of glass and little window
- 00:18:12frames and then a giant pile of sand
- 00:18:14once you put the sand in the bottom for
- 00:18:16the foundation or whatever you still
- 00:18:17have a huge pile left and someone's like
- 00:18:19how's the house construction going good

- 00:18:45glut gluten good God glutamine you could
- 00:18:47use more gluten though because it's

- 00:18:58us tried it and she she couldn't have it

- 00:19:14puffiness that gluten can make is just
- 00:19:17gluten-free it just doesn't doesn't add
- 00:19:19up so glutamine doesn't grow muscle and
- 00:19:22if you don't have digestive problems it
- 00:19:23doesn't help you with those either now
- 00:19:27there are no doubt nicer ways to what
- 00:19:29I'm going to say but glutamine for
- 00:19:30lifters is like damn near just burning
- 00:19:32your money um at least physically
- 00:19:35burning literal cash in public he like a
- 00:19:38rich guy Flex that might keep you laate
- 00:19:39on the other end buying glutamine and
- 00:19:41eating it is not a flex it's just kind
- 00:19:43of dumb um you do get a membership into
