- 00:00:00quitting an addiction is not a binary
- 00:00:02decision quitting an addiction involves
- 00:00:04a hundred steps the first thing you got
- 00:00:06to do is change your life addiction is
- 00:00:09environment plus you so overcoming an
- 00:00:12addiction is not about being strong it's
- 00:00:14about so there's a lot of thinking which
- 00:00:16I would call the addict's brain and I'm
- 00:00:19just going to highlight some of these
- 00:00:21there's a lot of them so you know on the
- 00:00:24surface we have things like denial or I
- 00:00:28would say deal making is another form of
- 00:00:30denial right so I'll stop when this bad
- 00:00:34outcome happens I don't have a problem
- 00:00:36yet it's really going to be a problem if
- 00:00:38I start passing out at parties like this
- 00:00:40guy does so if you notice that your mind
- 00:00:42is deal making think about that are you
- 00:00:45telling yourself okay if I do this kind
- 00:00:46of work then I deserve a reward and if I
- 00:00:49deserve a reward then I can use it so
- 00:00:51it's not that you don't deserve a reward
- 00:00:54it's just that this kind of that basic
- 00:00:57idea of I worked really hard I get to do
- 00:01:00something in life that's fine the
- 00:01:03problem is when it has to do with a
- 00:01:05substance so here's a really simple test
- 00:01:07for whether your deal making has been
- 00:01:09hijacked by your addictive brain if yall
- 00:01:12want to dive deep into the most
- 00:01:14important topics for our community check
- 00:01:16out HG memberships the first thing to
- 00:01:18understand is that there needs to be no
- 00:01:19outcome from small talk this is a Vasa
- 00:01:212o your mind is vasas all the way down
- 00:01:24so the key thing about Detachment is not
- 00:01:26that you don't have wants it is that
- 00:01:28your wants do not control control you
- 00:01:30membership grants you access to monthly
- 00:01:32streams as well as a back catalog of a
- 00:01:34Year's worth of content in addition to
- 00:01:36quests and so much more if you're
- 00:01:38interested you can sign up for 10 bucks
- 00:01:40a month at healthy gamer. g/ memberships
- 00:01:43or click the link in the description
- 00:01:44below hope to see you there simple test
- 00:01:47so if the
- 00:01:49reward can consistently be not drugs or
- 00:01:53whatever you're addicted to then it's
- 00:01:55fine and if the reward that you're
- 00:01:58always giving yourself in your like oh
- 00:02:00yeah so why don't you just reward
- 00:02:01yourself with like a massage instead of
- 00:02:05getting high on meth and if you find
- 00:02:07yourself arguing against that over and
- 00:02:10over and over again then you've got a
- 00:02:12problem and you have to be careful
- 00:02:14because the adct addict's brain is
- 00:02:15subtle it knows you right so it'll do oh
- 00:02:19yeah I
- 00:02:20can I don't need
- 00:02:23meth today you want me to do a massage
- 00:02:26I'll do a massage but next week we'll do
- 00:02:30something else oh we'll see next week
- 00:02:32yeah oh yeah see I did it I can handle
- 00:02:34it I controlled it it's fine you can use
- 00:02:38CU I'm in control which brings us to
- 00:02:39another really common one the perception
- 00:02:41of control often times when people are
- 00:02:43addicted to things they have this idea
- 00:02:45that they're in control they do things
- 00:02:47to keep themselves in control but it's
- 00:02:49like the thing that's in control is the
- 00:02:51addiction like that's really what's in
- 00:02:53control so you got to be careful about
- 00:02:54that perception of control and then
- 00:02:57there are a couple of like so these
- 00:02:59these are like the really like
- 00:03:00in-your-face ones but there's a lot of
- 00:03:02really subtle ones that I've encountered
- 00:03:05that are like really tricky one is
- 00:03:07something called the weakness trap so
- 00:03:09the weakness trap is
- 00:03:12when people view addiction as a weakness
- 00:03:16and if I'm an addict I'm weak I'm going
- 00:03:18to just draw write this out okay maybe
- 00:03:20you guys can follow I should be strong
- 00:03:24there I need to conquer my my addiction
- 00:03:31and if I don't then I'm weak
- 00:03:34therefore I am strong or will be strong
- 00:03:39so I know this sounds kind of weird
- 00:03:40because this seems like really positive
- 00:03:42but often times people who think this
- 00:03:44way do not do all of the crap that needs
- 00:03:47to be done so overcoming an addiction is
- 00:03:50not about being strong it's about
- 00:03:52putting in lots of hours in stupid
- 00:03:54that you don't want to do it's about
- 00:03:56going to meetings going to therapy medit
- 00:04:00every day and what these people have is
- 00:04:02they have this almost like this fantasy
- 00:04:05of strength where they don't want to be
- 00:04:07one of these weak people who has to rely
- 00:04:09on others go to therapy weak people go
- 00:04:11to therapy like I don't need any of that
- 00:04:14I think imagine this community will be
- 00:04:15somewhat different but you know those
- 00:04:17thoughts can still pop up you want to be
- 00:04:19you want to conquer it and so oddly
- 00:04:21enough the brain will tell you you
- 00:04:24should conquer this you can conquer this
- 00:04:26you don't need to do all this other crap
- 00:04:27that people are telling you be strong
- 00:04:30conquer it and do it without help very
- 00:04:32subtle very dangerous very Insidious
- 00:04:36that desire for strength gets
- 00:04:39hijacked oh this is a big one waiting to
- 00:04:42be done and forever so this is a really
- 00:04:45common thing that we see in especially
- 00:04:48postacute withdrawal syndrome so we talk
- 00:04:50about withdrawal which is when you're
- 00:04:53losing your tolerance to the substance
- 00:04:55and by the way if y'all are going
- 00:04:56through withdrawal especially from
- 00:04:58substances really really good idea to do
- 00:05:00it with a medical professional because
- 00:05:02sometimes withdrawal can be lethal so
- 00:05:03withdrawal from alcohol and benzo aines
- 00:05:06can induce seizures and asy and
- 00:05:08literally kill people so you don't want
- 00:05:09to do that but then often times what is
- 00:05:11really overlooked in the medical system
- 00:05:14is the postacute withdrawal syndrome
- 00:05:16which can last for months so the way to
- 00:05:19explain this is that you know so we have
- 00:05:22tolerance and the development of
- 00:05:24adaptations at the cellular level but
- 00:05:27then we also have de development of
- 00:05:30adaptations at the habitual level
- 00:05:33development of adaptations at the
- 00:05:35psychological level development of
- 00:05:37adaptations at the ego or identity level
- 00:05:40and so all of those adaptations which
- 00:05:43have been built on the addiction also
- 00:05:47need to be re-calibrated and that is
- 00:05:50really difficult so this is the
- 00:05:51postacute withdrawal syndrome and I'll
- 00:05:54give you all a really simple example of
- 00:05:56this when people are withdrawing or in
- 00:05:58the early stage ages of recovery it's
- 00:06:01really hard because you have to go to
- 00:06:02meetings a lot you have to go see your
- 00:06:04therapist you're working through all
- 00:06:05these dormant emotions and the problem
- 00:06:07with working through dormant emotions is
- 00:06:08that like I worked on dormant emotions
- 00:06:10this week I worked on them the week
- 00:06:12after I worked on them the week after I
- 00:06:13worked on them for three months there's
- 00:06:14just more and more and more and more and
- 00:06:16more of them my emotional regulation
- 00:06:18skills are level three now instead of
- 00:06:19level two so my life sucks everything is
- 00:06:23hard everything sucks and people think
- 00:06:26this is what being sober is they think
- 00:06:28that this period of time will last
- 00:06:33forever that's how it feels and then
- 00:06:36they think I can't do this this is too
- 00:06:39hard there's no way and this is
- 00:06:41literally what it's like and if you guys
- 00:06:43even pay attention literally to our
- 00:06:46subreddit in other places in our
- 00:06:49community you will see this thinking in
- 00:06:51all kinds of posts is this what it's
- 00:06:54supposed to be forever is this what life
- 00:06:57is so we see this a lot especially in
- 00:06:59like a lot of these burnout oriented
- 00:07:00tweets and things like that is life
- 00:07:03supposed to be going to work 9: to 5
- 00:07:04coming home doing laundry doing meal
- 00:07:06prep eating working out having 30
- 00:07:08minutes of recreation time and going to
- 00:07:10bed is that what is the next 40 years of
- 00:07:12my life like this no that's not how it
- 00:07:14works things are hard right now until
- 00:07:16you adapt until you build habits until
- 00:07:18you sort of get everything sorted out
- 00:07:20this is the hardest period but it
- 00:07:21doesn't stay like this so there's a
- 00:07:23sense of
- 00:07:25foreverness which really induces
- 00:07:27hopelessness because people don't think
- 00:07:30that they can withstand this forever but
- 00:07:32the good news is it's not forever it's
- 00:07:34just your brain doesn't experience that
- 00:07:35and why not it's because for weeks at a
- 00:07:38time it is this so the postacute
- 00:07:40withdrawal syndrome can last 6 months
- 00:07:42maybe even up to a year and so as the
- 00:07:44brain calculates that out it says I
- 00:07:46don't have the energy for this and that
- 00:07:48it induces some degree of hopelessness
- 00:07:51and then it starts telling itself things
- 00:07:52like well if I'm going to crack a year
- 00:07:55from now why not crack today
- 00:07:59so there are a couple of things that we
- 00:08:02strongly strongly strongly recommend so
- 00:08:04let's go through the rules of recovery
- 00:08:07so if you guys want to try to tackle
- 00:08:09this here are a couple of things that
- 00:08:11yall should really focus on the first
- 00:08:13thing you got to do is change your life
- 00:08:18now you may say but Dr K that sounds
- 00:08:19like a lot and that's just step one
- 00:08:21absolutely man because remember that
- 00:08:23your addiction is a product of your
- 00:08:25environment okay so what's the pitfall
- 00:08:28the pitfall is first of all people want
- 00:08:31the same life without the addiction
- 00:08:33that's not usually possible but the good
- 00:08:35news is that the new life is almost
- 00:08:38always and I can't think of a single
- 00:08:41case let me think I know I've heard this
- 00:08:43before but nothing is coming to mind is
- 00:08:46almost always better but it's hard to
- 00:08:48get there so this means changing your
- 00:08:49environment changing your friends also
- 00:08:52means changing your cognitive patterns
- 00:08:54right all this has to change changing
- 00:08:56the way that you deal with emotions and
- 00:08:58so it's weird because I I work work with
- 00:08:59a lot of people who will say like
- 00:09:00addiction was the best thing that ever
- 00:09:01happened to me and people are like how
- 00:09:03on
- 00:09:04Earth like what do you mean and what a
- 00:09:07lot of people will say is like if it
- 00:09:09wasn't for the addiction it it becomes a
- 00:09:10wakeup call right it certainly was for
- 00:09:13me like I started down this journey
- 00:09:14because my addiction to video games
- 00:09:16really screwed up my life and I really
- 00:09:19had to change it I was like in a
- 00:09:21fraternity going to parties eating fried
- 00:09:24rice by the pound playing video games
- 00:09:25every day hanging out with other friends
- 00:09:28who are pretty degenerate you over time
- 00:09:29like I had to change all those aspects
- 00:09:31of my life but that's not a bad thing is
- 00:09:34it hard sure you get better at it it
- 00:09:37goes slowly but it's good you should
- 00:09:39want that rule two complete honesty and
- 00:09:43by the way I didn't come up with these
- 00:09:44these are things that I've learned
- 00:09:46beautiful wisdom so there's a great
- 00:09:48saying in addiction recovery which is
- 00:09:50you are as sick as your secrets love
- 00:09:55this so true really important for things
- 00:09:58like trauma healing as well well cuz
- 00:10:00that's usually a secret so we talk about
- 00:10:02this some in like Dr K's guide we talk
- 00:10:05about Satya and truthfulness and there's
- 00:10:07YouTube videos and stuff so addiction
- 00:10:09fundamentally requires lying I've never
- 00:10:12seen an honest addict I think can't
- 00:10:15think of one maybe I have so usually on
- 00:10:17the surface you lie to other people you
- 00:10:19don't quite tell your family how much
- 00:10:21you're spending on crypto when people
- 00:10:24ask you what' you do today you don't say
- 00:10:27I watch pornography for an hour and a
- 00:10:28half right and when people ask you oh
- 00:10:31like how much did you have to drink you
- 00:10:33downplay it I had a couple of drinks
- 00:10:35maybe a few so as long as you lie
- 00:10:38addiction has fertile soil to grow and
- 00:10:41then the next thing is that like if you
- 00:10:44lie to other people the only way you can
- 00:10:46sustainably do that is by lying to
- 00:10:48yourself right so then you do little
- 00:10:50things like you stop paying attention
- 00:10:52intentionally stop paying attention to
- 00:10:54how many drinks you have the easiest way
- 00:10:56to not get caught in a lie is to be in
- 00:10:59denial so lying becomes a huge part of
- 00:11:01it so usually the then the question
- 00:11:04becomes how do you become honest how can
- 00:11:06you learn honesty I love the concept of
- 00:11:08something called a recovery Circle so
- 00:11:11recovery Circle starts really small and
- 00:11:13it is a group of people that you can be
- 00:11:15completely honest with so often times
- 00:11:18when I'm working with my patients their
- 00:11:19recovery circle is me and that's where
- 00:11:22it starts and then over time you expand
- 00:11:25your recovery Circle you learn how to be
- 00:11:27honest you're honest with one person it
- 00:11:29feels good to have one person in your
- 00:11:31life that you don't have to lie to feels
- 00:11:34relieving it's so scary but it feels
- 00:11:36amazing and you know we say here in chat
- 00:11:40I feel personally attacked what does
- 00:11:42that mean when y'all feel personally
- 00:11:44attacked you feel seen right I see what
- 00:11:47you are and that's good it feels good it
- 00:11:50hurts it's scary but it feels good and
- 00:11:53this is where peer support I think is
- 00:11:54really phenomenal we have things like
- 00:11:57alcoholic annonymous where it's like
- 00:11:58everyone else is alcoholic so like I can
- 00:12:01be honest and they know they're they
- 00:12:03understand what it's like and then
- 00:12:04usually this expands outward right so
- 00:12:06you start with like one person you start
- 00:12:08with maybe a sponsor you can go to
- 00:12:11meetings and you don't start sharing but
- 00:12:12then you tell one person and you open up
- 00:12:14to them and then eventually you start
- 00:12:15sharing and then you start telling some
- 00:12:17people who are close to you and then
- 00:12:19eventually your recovery Circle can be
- 00:12:21the whole world you can go into your job
- 00:12:22and you can say yeah you guys want to go
- 00:12:24to happy hour totally fine I'm fine with
- 00:12:26just Seltzer I've been in recovery for
- 00:12:2815 years and like that's cool like I I
- 00:12:31don't think people the only people who
- 00:12:33get upset by other people in recovery
- 00:12:35are people who have addictions and feel
- 00:12:38bad about not being in recovery
- 00:12:40subconsciously rule number three is ask
- 00:12:43for help so what are the things that get
- 00:12:46in the way of this shame this whole
- 00:12:49weakness trap right so this is not a
- 00:12:52process that I I mean even though
- 00:12:54there's some evidence that shows that
- 00:12:55people kind of do it on their own we
- 00:12:57just don't know right because we we
- 00:12:58don't measure them because they did it
- 00:13:00on their own but even on their own may
- 00:13:02have been with help we don't know right
- 00:13:03they may have confided in a friend who
- 00:13:05knows but I just can't tell you how much
- 00:13:07easier it is with help and a lot of
- 00:13:09people think oh if I ask for help I'm
- 00:13:10weak or like I won't be able to do it on
- 00:13:12my own or am I just becoming dependent
- 00:13:14on this person
- 00:13:16no you're not how can I say that let's
- 00:13:19just think about it for a little bit
- 00:13:20right so when I'm at the gym and I'm you
- 00:13:22know on my last W and I have a spotter
- 00:13:24help me a little bit am I becoming
- 00:13:26dependent on the spotter no the spotter
- 00:13:28helping me a little bit but means that
- 00:13:29my muscles are at maximal contraction I
- 00:13:32finish the rep and they're actually
- 00:13:34going to grow more the alternative of
- 00:13:36not using the spotter is that I don't do
- 00:13:38the rep at all and then my muscles will
- 00:13:39grow less using help accelerates your
- 00:13:42growth doesn't impede it now there are
- 00:13:44some situations where you can sort of
- 00:13:47get dependent on help but that is almost
- 00:13:49never the case because usually the
- 00:13:51institutions that are good at helping
- 00:13:53people recognize that so as a
- 00:13:56psychiatrist I recognize when people are
- 00:13:59doing work with me towards independence
- 00:14:01and growth and using me as a crutch and
- 00:14:05then we address that people in recovery
- 00:14:07understand this really well see what
- 00:14:08leads to growth is doing the thing what
- 00:14:11leads to not growth is not doing the
- 00:14:14thing now if help means substituting
- 00:14:17your actions with someone else's actions
- 00:14:20then you won't grow but if they are
- 00:14:22helping you and you are still
- 00:14:24acting you'll grow it'll work but there
- 00:14:27are challenges like shame and you know
- 00:14:29lying and embarrassment and all this
- 00:14:31kind of stuff rule number four is
- 00:14:33practice self-care so I want you all to
- 00:14:36understand this right so addiction is
- 00:14:38environment plus you and you can focus
- 00:14:41on the environment and you can focus on
- 00:14:43you you really have to do both so if
- 00:14:44you're if you're not sleeping every day
- 00:14:46and you don't have enough willpower to
- 00:14:48resist the addiction that's going to be
- 00:14:49a problem if you don't eat properly then
- 00:14:52your brain is going to be using a lot of
- 00:14:54energy to suppress those hunger signals
- 00:14:56and then you won't have much energy left
- 00:14:58over to resist your addiction if you are
- 00:15:01living in a situation that is toxic if
- 00:15:03you have friends who are not really
- 00:15:05friends of yours if you are in an
- 00:15:07abusive relationship all of those things
- 00:15:10will add negative emotional energy and
- 00:15:12will drain your willpower it'll be way
- 00:15:14harder to resist so you must take care
- 00:15:17of yourself addiction is very hard to
- 00:15:19beat in general so you might as well
- 00:15:22optimize yourself if you want to
- 00:15:24increase your chances of success and so
- 00:15:26a big part of what I teach is self-care
- 00:15:28go to yoga go to meditation do that
- 00:15:31stuff take care of your diet because
- 00:15:32it's going to be hard enough even
- 00:15:34without all that stuff give yourself
- 00:15:35every chance of success last rule most
- 00:15:38important rule is don't bend the rules
- 00:15:42right so the first rule of Fight Club is
- 00:15:44and the last rule of addiction recovery
- 00:15:46is don't bend the rules see the moment
- 00:15:49that you start bending the rules the
- 00:15:51addiction can leak in I want you all to
- 00:15:53think about addiction is a poisonous gas
- 00:15:56that will fill whatever container you
- 00:15:58give it
- 00:15:59if you have a crack in the wall it'll
- 00:16:01slip through it right we gave you all a
- 00:16:03couple of examples of like oh I deserve
- 00:16:05it it'll use whatever it can oh you're
- 00:16:07ashamed of yourself you're pathetic you
- 00:16:09might as well use you're not worth it
- 00:16:11you deserve to destroy your life you
- 00:16:12feel weak you want to be strong oh yeah
- 00:16:15don't get help be strong you want to be
- 00:16:18strong that's great let's go with that
- 00:16:20plan just do it all yourself you don't
- 00:16:22need to change your life oh it's too
- 00:16:23hard to change your life it's too much
- 00:16:25work to change your life oh you're
- 00:16:27feeling tired today and you're feeling
- 00:16:28like you can't do this forever thank God
- 00:16:31because you can't do it forever oh do
- 00:16:33you want 40 years of this no you don't
- 00:16:35nobody wants 40 years of this come back
- 00:16:37to me baby at least with me every day
- 00:16:40wasn't bad if you're going to have a
- 00:16:41shitty life you might as well have the
- 00:16:43upsides by getting high every now and
- 00:16:45then don't bend the rules and recognize
- 00:16:48that as long as you stick with that the
- 00:16:52thalamus in the nucleus accumbens in the
- 00:16:54amydala in the lyic system have nowhere
- 00:16:57to run they have nowhere to act act if a
- 00:16:59rule is a rule and it is impervious then
- 00:17:02you become impervious no means no I've
- 00:17:05been sober for a year I deserve it no
- 00:17:07means no sure I deserve it but I'm not
- 00:17:09going to do that and if you focus on not
- 00:17:10bending the rules that'll strengthen
- 00:17:12your frontal loes and it helps align
- 00:17:14your frontal loes since we're somewhat
- 00:17:16deficient in planning and executing
- 00:17:18tasks and predicting errors that's why
- 00:17:21we need to be stupid about it because
- 00:17:23the other dangerous thing that I
- 00:17:25oftentimes see is that the worst
- 00:17:26addictions happen to the smartest people
- 00:17:28because the addiction turns the brain
- 00:17:30against you and so the more powerful the
- 00:17:32brain is it's like if I'm going to cast
- 00:17:34mind control on an enemy do I want to
- 00:17:36use a level 60 enemy or a level what two
- 00:17:38enemy so when addiction casts mind
- 00:17:40control on you on a level 60 brain it's
- 00:17:43going to be way harder to beat that's
- 00:17:45why you need Ste steadiness resilience
- 00:17:48unbending you can be weak you don't have
- 00:17:51to be strong we're just not going to
- 00:17:52bend the rules so I hope this has been
- 00:17:54helpful let's get to Q&A what questions
- 00:17:57do you all have how did you
- 00:18:00game later without it becoming addicting
- 00:18:02again great question so let's understand
- 00:18:04a couple of things remember that an
- 00:18:05addiction requires giving pleasure and
- 00:18:08taking away pain an addiction requires
- 00:18:10activation of all kinds of neuros
- 00:18:11circuitry the short answer is I dealt
- 00:18:14with my dormant emotions I found a
- 00:18:17purpose in life so right now I could be
- 00:18:21playing a video game why am I not
- 00:18:22playing a video game because this is
- 00:18:24more important to me so I stopped using
- 00:18:27games as a source of emotional
- 00:18:29regulation when I feel bad about
- 00:18:31something I go for a walk I started
- 00:18:33engaging in a lot of self-care started
- 00:18:36meditating a lot right so this is what I
- 00:18:38mean everyone thinks about addiction is
- 00:18:40I have this thing that I can't control
- 00:18:43and I lose the willpower battle against
- 00:18:45this thing but you can dismantle that
- 00:18:48addiction like One Table leg at a time
- 00:18:50and it'll just tip over and fall
- 00:18:52especially with the behavioral
- 00:18:54addictions substance use addictions with
- 00:18:56strong genetic predispositions May
- 00:18:58require abstence but it just became a
- 00:19:01source of pleasure and Recreation
- 00:19:03nothing else and when that's what it is
- 00:19:06then it becomes healthy so I think sex
- 00:19:08and love addiction is another good
- 00:19:09example of this right so a lot of people
- 00:19:11who get addicted to sex will use it as a
- 00:19:14substitute for selfworth they use it as
- 00:19:16their source of feeling accepted by
- 00:19:19another human being and once those
- 00:19:21things go away you can have sex in a
- 00:19:23healthy way you can fall in love in a
- 00:19:25healthy way so you were telling me that
- 00:19:27when I tell myself that I can quit
- 00:19:29snooze nicotine addiction anytime I want
- 00:19:31I'm lying yes and no so I don't know if
- 00:19:34you can quit an addiction anytime you
- 00:19:36want but my point is that quitting an
- 00:19:39addiction is not a binary decision so
- 00:19:41this is hopefully yall have taken this
- 00:19:43away quitting an addiction involves a
- 00:19:45100 steps so can you quit it absolutely
- 00:19:48it's just about doing the work and so
- 00:19:50nicotine addiction is a really good
- 00:19:52example of like we have very good
- 00:19:54treatments for nicotine addiction what
- 00:19:56we basically know is there's a
- 00:19:57medication called verin that reduces
- 00:20:00cravings and then when you use the patch
- 00:20:03and some kind of acute nicotine
- 00:20:05supplement like gum or lenes success
- 00:20:08rates are very high I think 60 or 70% so
- 00:20:10we have like addiction treatments for
- 00:20:12nicotine that are very successful but it
- 00:20:14involves asking for help what kind of
- 00:20:16help should I ask for so I think two or
- 00:20:19three kinds of help come to mind one is
- 00:20:21you can go to a psychiatrist or
- 00:20:23therapist and you can say hey I think I
- 00:20:25may have an addiction and they'll take
- 00:20:26it from there the second thing that you
- 00:20:28can do is go to any kind of peer support
- 00:20:31recovery meeting Alcoholics Anonymous
- 00:20:33Narcotics Anonymous computer gaming
- 00:20:35addicts anonymous and say hi my name is
- 00:20:38whatever I may I may have a problem with
- 00:20:40this kind of addiction that's it yeah so
- 00:20:42this was uh really really really good
- 00:20:45point so this is something that we'll
- 00:20:46cover in the workshop but we just didn't
- 00:20:47have time to cover so great point to end
- 00:20:49on so Vladimir is saying I quit smoking
- 00:20:52after 14 years and drinking after 19
- 00:20:54years cold turkey both times confronting
- 00:20:56and dismantling the positive
- 00:20:57associations I had with my addictions
- 00:21:00was critical so we didn't talk about
- 00:21:01this too explicitly so let's talk about
- 00:21:03it now for a couple of seconds see the
- 00:21:05problem with
- 00:21:06addictions is that they're Solutions not
- 00:21:09problems so when I say change your life
- 00:21:12right and I say everyone wants to have
- 00:21:14their life without the addiction the
- 00:21:16problem is that when we look at these
- 00:21:18substances we see a lot of good right I
- 00:21:21like being relaxed at parties I like
- 00:21:25being able to go on a bachelor party and
- 00:21:28get hand with my friends I love being
- 00:21:30able to go to a bar barbecue and have a
- 00:21:32good time right I love partying with
- 00:21:34lines of coke like people like this
- 00:21:36stuff and especially if you look at some
- 00:21:38of these fields like Finance it's like
- 00:21:40it's part of the socialization and
- 00:21:42people are like well when my boss when
- 00:21:44the managing director of my firm is like
- 00:21:47hey you want to do lines of Coke in the
- 00:21:48bathroom like I can't say no cuz he's
- 00:21:51the one who determines whether I get
- 00:21:53$300,000 of bonus this year or $450,000
- 00:21:56of bonus this year so those lines of
- 00:21:59coke are worth $150,000 I've seen it as
- 00:22:02an addiction psychiatrist like it ain't
- 00:22:03pretty and you're you're spoton that a
- 00:22:05big part of this is dismantling the
- 00:22:08positive associations a big part of this
- 00:22:11is the belief that you can't live
- 00:22:14without your addiction I've seen
- 00:22:16marriages end in divorce because people
- 00:22:18are addicted I've also seen marriages
- 00:22:21end in in divorce because people get
- 00:22:23sober I've seen relationships that are
- 00:22:25built on a shared addiction I found
- 00:22:29someone who won't judge me because
- 00:22:31they're just as addicted as I am and
- 00:22:33we're both going to go hard and I love
- 00:22:35this person so much because this person
- 00:22:37knows how to go on a bender and they'll
- 00:22:40protect me if I go too hard they'll keep
- 00:22:43things in check so there are a ton of
- 00:22:45positive associations which are very
- 00:22:47hard to deal with and those absolutely
- 00:22:49need to be dismantled really great Point
- 00:22:51thank you all very much for coming today
- 00:22:53if y'all are struggling with something
- 00:22:56look at it a little bit critically
- 00:22:58really try to understand what's going on
- 00:23:00ask for help and know that you can live
- 00:23:02without it that the life that you build
- 00:23:04without it is probably going to be
- 00:23:06better it's going to be missing certain
- 00:23:08things and even as someone who's a
- 00:23:10degenerate gamer addict who's gaming in
- 00:23:14recovery I miss some of the stuff too
- 00:23:17like going hard in gaming is its own
- 00:23:20special pleasure there's there's own
- 00:23:22special pleasure of real just debauchery
- 00:23:25right when some expansion drops and like
- 00:23:28I'm going to stay up I'm going to skip
- 00:23:30all my classes for a week and I'm going
- 00:23:32to grind to 60 there's something that's
- 00:23:34fun about that I gave that up and I
- 00:23:37think the challenge with addiction is
- 00:23:38that you are giving things up I think
- 00:23:40the good news is that you only have to
- 00:23:41give them up for a while and then you
- 00:23:44really don't want them anymore you
- 00:23:46really start to appreciate what you have
- 00:23:48what's the end goal the end goal is
- 00:23:51freedom the end goal is freedom to live
- 00:23:53life the way it's supposed to be lived
- 00:23:55instead of living a version of life that
- 00:23:58is shaped by an addiction should you
- 00:24:00quit it right now why not why
