00:00:05
welcome to edgy Planet 21s ten minute
00:00:08
Tuesday's conversations with experts in
00:00:10
education my name is Claire coupe Scott
00:00:13
and I lead the content team at each
00:00:15
planet 21 today I'm excited to be joined
00:00:18
by jameth ty co-author of understanding
00:00:21
by design Jay is an author of many books
00:00:24
and he consults with districts and
00:00:27
schools around the globe Jay thank you
00:00:29
for joining me let's start with the
00:00:31
basics what is understanding by design
00:00:33
and why is it important for schools to
00:00:36
use our curriculum framework
00:00:38
understanding by design is basically a
00:00:40
curriculum planning framework it has a
00:00:43
particular focus which is developing
00:00:45
curriculum and learning experiences that
00:00:48
will help students develop and deepen
00:00:49
their understanding of important ideas
00:00:52
ultimately so they can transfer their
00:00:54
learning in a world in which we can
00:00:56
Google much of the world's information
00:00:58
on a smartphone and a world which is
00:01:01
changing rapidly and increasingly
00:01:04
unpredictable it makes sense for a
00:01:06
modern education to not just develop
00:01:08
basic skills or basic information in
00:01:10
students but to help them understand the
00:01:12
larger transferrable ideas so they can
00:01:15
transfer their learning they can apply
00:01:17
their learning to new situations that's
00:01:19
one of the big areas of focus and
00:01:21
understanding by design another part of
00:01:24
understanding by design is gathering
00:01:26
evidence of learning if we say that we
00:01:29
want students to be able to transfer
00:01:30
their learning and that we want them to
00:01:32
develop and deepen understanding of
00:01:33
important ideas we need evidence of
00:01:36
their ability to do those things so a
00:01:39
big part of uvd is gathering evidence of
00:01:42
student understanding and transfer and
00:01:46
finally
00:01:48
perhaps most importantly one of the
00:01:50
underpinning goals of understanding by
00:01:51
design is to help teaching and learning
00:01:54
become more engaging for students more
00:01:56
relevant more meaningful many teachers
00:02:00
have done this over the years tried to
00:02:02
make their by teaching and learning more
00:02:04
engaging for students but we have ideas
00:02:07
in the UBD that will help it be more
00:02:09
likely by design when a district is
00:02:13
ready to start implementing UBD what are
00:02:15
some great first steps that they can
00:02:17
take well one of the first steps that I
00:02:20
advise is to think about understanding
00:02:23
by design as an answer so if it's an
00:02:27
answer what questions is it answering
00:02:29
rather than introducing UBD as one more
00:02:32
new thing that teachers are expected to
00:02:34
do I prefer that school leaders begin by
00:02:37
posing for example a series of questions
00:02:40
such as how do we know our students
00:02:42
really understand the things we're
00:02:44
teaching what's worth most understanding
00:02:48
in all that we have to teach to what
00:02:51
extent are our students genuinely
00:02:53
engaged in learning or are they just
00:02:55
going through the motions are we testing
00:02:58
everything that we claim to value or
00:03:00
just the things that are easiest to test
00:03:01
in grade questions like these stimulate
00:03:06
discussions and ideally we'll set up a
00:03:09
need for understanding by design so
00:03:11
let's start with questions let's start
00:03:14
with setting up a need as opposed to
00:03:16
implying that this is the latest Silver
00:03:18
Bullet that's going to fix education
00:03:20
once you've made the case for UBD then
00:03:24
there's a need for professional
00:03:27
development and support and this can be
00:03:29
done through workshops bringing in
00:03:31
consultants from mac associates and
00:03:35
using edge of planet online learning
00:03:38
paths to introduce the ideas of you BDD
00:03:41
teachers and give them practice in using
00:03:43
it along the way we want to monitor
00:03:47
results so it's not about filling in
00:03:50
boxes on a template
00:03:52
as much as it is seeing the effect of
00:03:54
our curriculum plans and our teaching on
00:03:57
students are they more engaged do the
00:04:00
assessments reveal that they're actually
00:04:01
demonstrating understanding and ability
00:04:03
to transfer and like every coach knows
00:04:06
we look at game film and adjust next
00:04:09
week's practice teachers and teacher
00:04:11
teams should look at the results of
00:04:13
their teaching and of their curriculum
00:04:14
and make adjustments to improve the
00:04:17
quality of student performance why is
00:04:20
technology a critical tool for
00:04:22
curriculum design
00:04:24
I started teaching many years ago and
00:04:27
the day before computers were prominent
00:04:30
even and the internet was was
00:04:32
ever-present and I remember curriculum
00:04:34
planning was basically done on notebooks
00:04:37
and curriculum mapping was done where we
00:04:40
pasted topics on a giant board and then
00:04:43
we could look for vertical and
00:04:45
horizontal alignment I also remember
00:04:48
being a teacher in a large school
00:04:51
district every August we would get a
00:04:53
shrink-wrapped packet which was our new
00:04:56
curriculum and it had three holes in the
00:04:59
binder and we would put it into our
00:05:01
curriculum binders well thankfully as
00:05:04
the world has moved digitally so too has
00:05:07
education and curriculum so typically
00:05:10
now people use computers and online
00:05:15
resources to develop and to house their
00:05:18
curriculum but not all technology is of
00:05:22
equal value I work with many schools in
00:05:25
districts where individual teachers will
00:05:28
plan curriculum using whatever some
00:05:30
program they have available it may be
00:05:32
Microsoft Word and they do it
00:05:34
individually but what they do doesn't
00:05:36
connect to anyone else's work some
00:05:39
school districts have adopted Google
00:05:41
Docs and that makes sense in the in the
00:05:44
sense that you can store the curriculum
00:05:47
in folders and two or more teachers can
00:05:49
collaborate that a system like Google
00:05:52
Docs and Google folders is really
00:05:55
inadequate if your goal is a coherent
00:05:57
and connected and aligned curriculum you
00:06:00
need a system that's more robust that
00:06:03
can allow teachers to share with each
00:06:05
other and that allows school and
00:06:07
district leaders to actually look at the
00:06:09
curriculum in large print out reports to
00:06:13
see are we in fact aligned is there
00:06:16
unnecessary redundancy or are there
00:06:18
important outcomes or standards that are
00:06:20
falling through the cracks a system like
00:06:23
edge of planet software is much better
00:06:25
suited not only to individual teachers
00:06:28
planning units and teams collaborating
00:06:31
on curriculum design but on school and
00:06:33
district leaders being able to see the
00:06:36
macro curriculum and
00:06:38
plug in the gaps and smooth out the
00:06:40
redundancies
00:06:42
can you talk about the edge' plan at 21
00:06:44
platform and why it is the best solution
00:06:48
yeah
00:06:49
chosen to work with as you plan at 21
00:06:51
for a couple of reasons first is a
00:06:54
recognition that we need smart software
00:06:57
to support curriculum design not only by
00:06:59
individual teachers but especially
00:07:02
school and district wide the edge of
00:07:06
planet unit planning software is
00:07:09
user-friendly and it's literally the
00:07:12
only software program in the world
00:07:14
that's licensed commercially and built
00:07:18
upon to uvd 2.0 template there are some
00:07:21
versions out there that emulate or try
00:07:26
to replicate some aspects of
00:07:27
understanding by design but edge of
00:07:29
planet 21 really has the best software
00:07:32
for unit planning
00:07:33
moreover edge of planet is building the
00:07:37
macro curriculum software system that
00:07:39
will support building a coordinated
00:07:42
overall school and district curriculum
00:07:44
and enabled leaders to look at reports
00:07:47
on how the curriculum is aligned what
00:07:51
redundancies might be in place that need
00:07:53
to be smoothed out and maybe some areas
00:07:57
that need greater emphasis without the
00:07:59
ability to see the overall curriculum
00:08:01
you can't address those system problems
00:08:04
edgy planet software supports that
00:08:07
another unique feature of edgy planet 21
00:08:10
is it's a professional learning support
00:08:14
system through learning paths and online
00:08:17
modules teachers can actually learn
00:08:20
about understanding by design even as
00:08:22
they're designing using the software
00:08:24
they can share with other teachers
00:08:26
within and even across districts and
00:08:29
leaders can use the system to both
00:08:32
develop and support teachers in their
00:08:35
curriculum work so in sum it's the best
00:08:40
curriculum
00:08:41
system out there Jay thanks for joining
00:08:45
me today I look forward to future
00:08:46
conversations
