this is Doug deuro and today we're going
  • 00:00:03
to talk about cars where I disagree with
  • 00:00:07
everyone else either I like the car way
  • 00:00:09
more than everybody else does or I hate
  • 00:00:12
the car way more than everybody else
  • 00:00:14
does these are the top cars where my
  • 00:00:16
    opinion is different from everyone
  • 00:00:18
    else's
  • 00:00:20
    [Applause]
  • 00:00:22
opinion today's video is sponsored by
  • 00:00:25
cars and bids which is my online car
  • 00:00:29
    auction website for modern Enthusiast
  • 00:00:32
cars so far cars and bids has hosted
  • 00:00:35
more than 20,000 auctions of special
  • 00:00:38
cool exciting cars like this and this
  • 00:00:42
and this and this so if you're looking

to sell your Enthusiast car reach a wide
  • 00:00:49
audience at carsand bids.com okay so the
  • 00:00:54
top cars where I disagree with everyone
  • 00:00:56
else these are alphabetized um they're
  • 00:00:59
not like in numbers numbered order where
  • 00:01:01
I come up with the most disagreed and
  • 00:01:03
they're just alphabetical and I should
  • 00:01:05
say you know most of the time when I
  • 00:01:07
review cars my opinion lines up with the
  • 00:01:10
    prevailing sentiment which makes sense
  • 00:01:11
because good car reviewers who all say
  • 00:01:14
the same thing uh I'm not going to be
  • 00:01:16
the one guy standing saying no they're
  • 00:01:17
all wrong like usually I drive the car
  • 00:01:19
and yeah you know that that feels the
  • 00:01:20
same and this is generally teased out to
  • 00:01:22
be true when I go to product launches
  • 00:01:23
and we're all under embargo and when it
  • 00:01:26
finally comes time for us to publish we
  • 00:01:28
all have a fairly similar opinion
  • 00:01:29
whether it's Pro or con and that's
  • 00:01:30
because car journalists who who are
  • 00:01:33
experts in doing this who have driven a
  • 00:01:34
zillion different cars generally have a
  • 00:01:36
pretty good idea is this car great is
  • 00:01:38
this car bad where does this car rank
  • 00:01:40
Etc uh and so there are not a lot of
  • 00:01:42
times when I have prevailing different
  • 00:01:44
opinions in fact I I went through
  • 00:01:46
hundreds and hundreds of my old videos
  • 00:01:47
just like a list of the cars and I could
  • 00:01:49
only think of maybe 20 cars where I
  • 00:01:51
disagreed with the general sentiment uh
  • 00:01:53
and and about half of them it wasn't
  • 00:01:56
that much of a disagreement but the
  • 00:01:57
other half with the cars I'm going to
  • 00:01:59
talk about today do have a pretty
  • 00:02:00
    significant disagreement with how most
  • 00:02:02
people feel about these cars and so
  • 00:02:04
today I'm going to talk through starting
  • 00:02:06
alphabetically again with the BMW i8
  • 00:02:10
I've reviewed the I8 twice and both
  • 00:02:12
times I liked it the general sentiment
  • 00:02:14
is that it is a terrible car and it's
  • 00:02:17
stupid and it's bad and it's awful um I
  • 00:02:20
think most people don't like the I8
  • 00:02:22
because you know it was BMW's latest
  • 00:02:24
attempt at a at a sports car and it
  • 00:02:26
wasn't particularly sporty it was a
  • 00:02:27
    three-cylinder engine it was a plug-in
  • 00:02:28
hybrid this is a when plugins were not
  • 00:02:30
as common as they are now when the I8
  • 00:02:32
came out 10 years ago and people were
  • 00:02:33
like so mad that BMW noted former
  • 00:02:36
    manufacturer of amazing pleasurable
  • 00:02:38
sports cars was suddenly making this
  • 00:02:39
    stupid automatic futur looking thing
  • 00:02:42
when they could have just done like a V8
  • 00:02:44
manual true sports car and I get that
  • 00:02:46
however if you take the I8 at face value
  • 00:02:48
it's actually a pretty cool car their
  • 00:02:49
goal wasn't to make a V8 manual sports
  • 00:02:51
car they wanted to make something that
  • 00:02:52
seems sort of futuristic and cool and
  • 00:02:53
exciting and the I8 for its flaws for
  • 00:02:57
what it could have been when you think
  • 00:02:58
about what BMW was trying to execute I
  • 00:03:00
think it was actually pretty cool they
  • 00:03:01
wanted something that looked crazy and
  • 00:03:03
the I8 looked crazy I mean it really
  • 00:03:06
then especially but also now had like a
  • 00:03:08
very futuristic very exciting crazy look
  • 00:03:12
to it that was just people would see it
  • 00:03:13
what is this thing I remember you know
  • 00:03:16
when they first came out and and even a
  • 00:03:17
few years later people had them on turo
  • 00:03:19
and you could go rent one and drive it
  • 00:03:21
around and you'd get all the looks and
  • 00:03:22
all the attention because it was just
  • 00:03:24
such an absolutely insane car it wasn't
  • 00:03:26
that expensive uh and it was also
  • 00:03:28
relatively fun to drive people oh it's a
  • 00:03:30
    three-cylinder well it's a
  • 00:03:31
    three-cylinder with electric assist and
  • 00:03:33
    obviously small motors with with
  • 00:03:34
electric have become more common now but
  • 00:03:36
it had like 306 400 horsepower some some
  • 00:03:39
decent amount and and it was quick it
  • 00:03:41
was a quick car that cornered flat that
  • 00:03:43
steered well it was fun to drive and I
  • 00:03:46
especially like the I8 now that it has
  • 00:03:47
become relatively affordable this is a
  • 00:03:49
    $35 to $40,000 car that's a pretty good
  • 00:03:51
bargain considering what it offers um I
  • 00:03:53
understand that it is not the main you
  • 00:03:55
    know it's not an E46 M3 it's not a z3m
  • 00:03:57
coupe but it's a fun car and given what
  • 00:04:00
BMW was trying to execute I actually
  • 00:04:02
think it was executed in a in a fairly
  • 00:04:05
reasonably exciting Manner and I think
  • 00:04:07
they're cool cars and frankly I think if
  • 00:04:08
you ask the general public not car
  • 00:04:10
enthusiasts but the general public they
  • 00:04:11
would agree it's cool and it is next up
  • 00:04:13
cars where I disagree with everyone else
  • 00:04:15
this is a huge disagreement I have with
  • 00:04:17
most people the new BMW M2 the new BMW
  • 00:04:22
M2 which everybody just complains about
  • 00:04:24
all people do is complain about the new
  • 00:04:27
M2 new M2 is out just complain complain
  • 00:04:29
complain and uh the way it looks you
  • 00:04:31
know the fact that it's bigger and I
  • 00:04:33
want to just slap all these people and
  • 00:04:35
say look this is the end you're seeing
  • 00:04:38
    the last six-cylinder manual
  • 00:04:40
transmission rear wheeel drive BMW like
  • 00:04:43
this used to be BMW's bread and butter
  • 00:04:45
when I was a kid this is what they did
  • 00:04:47
and you are seeing the end of it this is
  • 00:04:49
the last of the last you should
  • 00:04:51
appreciate the fact that you are still
  • 00:04:53
living in an era when BMW is
  • 00:04:55
manufacturing a car like this because
  • 00:04:56
soon you won't be this is this is where
  • 00:04:59
it all stops the next one's going to be
  • 00:05:01
    an automatic plug-in hybrid whatever
  • 00:05:03
this is all this is it this is the end
  • 00:05:06
of the line and and I understand the
  • 00:05:08
complaints about it not being that
  • 00:05:10
attractive frankly I like how it looks I
  • 00:05:11
preferred how the previous one looked I
  • 00:05:13
preferred how the 1M looked back in 2011
  • 00:05:15
of course it's a weird looking car a
  • 00:05:16
little bit but I would I look past that
  • 00:05:18
in two seconds especially when I get
  • 00:05:20
behind the wheel and drive the car the
  • 00:05:22
new M2 drives wonderfully it is it is
  • 00:05:25
the last gasp of of still performing
  • 00:05:30
still a BMW from what I remember it like
  • 00:05:32
as a kid you know Ken always complains
  • 00:05:34
BMW's lost the plot they've changed they
  • 00:05:36
they're not the same brand as they were
  • 00:05:37
that's true but there are still a few
  • 00:05:39
bright shining stars uh which isn't true
  • 00:05:41
for some Brands some brands have no
  • 00:05:43
bright shining stars they they used to
  • 00:05:44
be something and they've changed BMW
  • 00:05:46
still has a few and the M2 is one of
  • 00:05:48
them and my view is when a manufacturer
  • 00:05:50
releases a car like this we should be
  • 00:05:53
happy about the fact that they're even
  • 00:05:54
still doing cars like this instead of
  • 00:05:56
being like Oh the front end is ugly
  • 00:05:58
that's why I'm not buying it oh the
  • 00:05:59
fenders are ugly that's why I'm not
  • 00:06:00
buying it no you're not buying cuz you
  • 00:06:01
never were going to buy a car like this
  • 00:06:03
in the first place we all know that you
  • 00:06:05
just want to complain online but the
  • 00:06:07
truth is it's a special thing to still
  • 00:06:10
have vehicles like this in existence and
  • 00:06:13
    I'm thrilled that it's still here I
  • 00:06:14
really am okay next car ride disagree
  • 00:06:16
with everyone else this is going to be
  • 00:06:17
controversial the Ferrari tester Roa and
  • 00:06:19
actually I'm going to add the
  • 00:06:20
Lamborghini Countach to this and and
  • 00:06:22
make a full holistic Point here the
  • 00:06:25
Ferrari tester Roa and the Lamborghini
  • 00:06:26
kastro rival cars back in the 1980s and
  • 00:06:29
the kunash was generally agreed to be
  • 00:06:31
the insane one and as time has gone on
  • 00:06:34
there's been more appreciation for the
  • 00:06:36
Countach of course has become beloved
  • 00:06:40
but the tester Roa has gained some
  • 00:06:41
appreciation and I don't really think
  • 00:06:43
it's warranted to be honest um they cost
  • 00:06:46
about the same when they were new and
  • 00:06:47
now the Countach is is many multiples
  • 00:06:49
    higher and I think that's a reflection
  • 00:06:51
of two things number one the tester Roa
  • 00:06:52
isn't that rare um but also it's a
  • 00:06:55
reflection of the fact that the Kos was
  • 00:06:56
    a groundbreaking and amazing and
  • 00:06:58
exciting and insane car and the
  • 00:07:00
testarosa at its core was a copycat of
  • 00:07:02
all that Lamborghini had come out with
  • 00:07:04
the Mid Engine V12 Supercar and Ferrari
  • 00:07:07
who had prior to that only made front
  • 00:07:09
engine V12 supercars ran to the drawing
  • 00:07:11
boards to try to get at Lamborghini they
  • 00:07:14
had to come up with something and so
  • 00:07:16
Ferrari had the boxer and then they had
  • 00:07:17
the tester Roa and then Ferrari realized
  • 00:07:20
they were never going to beat
  • 00:07:20
Lamborghini and they bailed on the
  • 00:07:22
mid-engine V12 Supercar and went back to
  • 00:07:24
front engine cars in that segment and
  • 00:07:26
which was the right call except for the
  • 00:07:28
oneoff like the F50 and Lamborghini
  • 00:07:30
    continues this bloodline Mira Countach
  • 00:07:33
Diablo Mercy Aventador and now RTO which
  • 00:07:35
is amazing as well and I find it to be
  • 00:07:38
interesting that there's been this kind
  • 00:07:40
of ground swell of excitement about the
  • 00:07:41
tester Roa in the last few years it's
  • 00:07:43
just not that great it was a copycat car
  • 00:07:46
of the Countach in my opinion I never
  • 00:07:48
liked how it looked and also it just
  • 00:07:49
doesn't drive all that well and the cool
  • 00:07:51
thing about the Countach is it had this
  • 00:07:52
    groundbreaking the wedge shape it
  • 00:07:54
    basically invented the wedge design
  • 00:07:55
which became so popular it was the first
  • 00:07:57
car ever with scissor doors it was kind
  • 00:07:58
of the beginning of the insane superar
  • 00:08:01
as we know it today and the tester Roa
  • 00:08:05
just never offered what the Kash did it
  • 00:08:07
was just Ferrari's attempt at at at
  • 00:08:10
doing what Lamborghini was doing and
  • 00:08:12
frankly not a successful attempt now the
  • 00:08:15
market agrees with me cachas are are
  • 00:08:17
again like I said worth four or five
  • 00:08:18
times what tester roas are worth and
  • 00:08:20
that they deserve to be U but a lot of
  • 00:08:21
people really hold the testera in this
  • 00:08:24
High esteem that I just don't quite
  • 00:08:26
understand it is simply not that great
  • 00:08:28
not that original not that special and
  • 00:08:30
not that cool looking uh when the count
  • 00:08:32
is all of those things and on the
  • 00:08:34
subject of the Countach in terms of cars
  • 00:08:36
where I disagree with people you know
  • 00:08:37
people always come up to me every time I
  • 00:08:39
drive the kach to Cars and Coffee but
  • 00:08:41
doesn't it drive like crap that's the
  • 00:08:42
first thing they say and I just want to
  • 00:08:43
slap him in the face and say get in
  • 00:08:45
let's do this and take him for a spin
  • 00:08:48
and say does you think it drives like
  • 00:08:50
crap now like yeah it's it's this it's
  • 00:08:52
this old agrarian kind of thing but all
  • 00:08:54
cars were like that back then and this
  • 00:08:56
one sounds unbelievable it is an
  • 00:08:59
    absolute Ely amazing menacing crazy
  • 00:09:01
Driving Experience and when people talk
  • 00:09:04
about oh it's not that great to drive
  • 00:09:06
well but it's it's it's an old car like
  • 00:09:09
all these 70s 80s cars are by modern
  • 00:09:11
standards not that great to drive the
  • 00:09:13
thing that separates this car is it's
  • 00:09:14
just absolutely insane it feels insane
  • 00:09:18
it drives insane it's a ridiculous thing
  • 00:09:21
and the experience is so amazing and I
  • 00:09:24
think that's what makes count so great
  • 00:09:26
and frankly by comparison tester Roa
  • 00:09:28
does not have that same EXP experience
  • 00:09:29
you don't have the same level of sound
  • 00:09:31
you don't have the same visual drama the
  • 00:09:33
    same craziness Ferrari created the
  • 00:09:35
tester Roa to to copy the Countach and
  • 00:09:37
and instead watered it down to things
  • 00:09:40
that in my opinion make the Countach so
  • 00:09:41
special so my disagreement here is that
  • 00:09:44
I think the tester Roa isn't as great as
  • 00:09:46
people say and I think the kachha is
  • 00:09:47
better than people say um and when I
  • 00:09:49
think back about the 80s mid-engine
  • 00:09:51
Exotic Car Wars kunos has won it was
  • 00:09:54
always the winner uh but and now it is
  • 00:09:56
    finally getting the recognition it
  • 00:09:57
deserves and I'm thrilled about that
  • 00:10:00
because there was a time when when
  • 00:10:01
tester Roa values were higher than
  • 00:10:03
countes values it made no sense the
  • 00:10:05
market liked them better and finally
  • 00:10:08
people have come around to understand
  • 00:10:09
what makes the K so special and I think
  • 00:10:12
    the tester roa's General languishing
  • 00:10:13
shows that somewhat people agree with me
  • 00:10:16
but I just want to make it really clear
  • 00:10:18
how I feel okay next car uh where I
  • 00:10:21
disagree with everyone else this is a
  • 00:10:22
car where most people watching will
  • 00:10:24
agree with me but most everyone else is
  • 00:10:26
will disagree with me and that's the
  • 00:10:27
inos Grenadier I loved the gradi I think
  • 00:10:30
it's awesome uh and a lot of the reviews
  • 00:10:32
that I read were tremendously critical
  • 00:10:34
of it and I think that people who review
  • 00:10:36
that car critically Totally Miss the
  • 00:10:38
point of what that car is about I see
  • 00:10:40
complaints about the ride quality the
  • 00:10:42
harshness the the the arrow the arrow
  • 00:10:45
the wind noise the everything basically
  • 00:10:47
that that it simply isn't like refined
  • 00:10:49
enough and I want to just hit these
  • 00:10:50
people and say that's the point it's not
  • 00:10:53
refined enough that's the point but I
  • 00:10:55
think a lot of the people who review the
  • 00:10:56
car that way are not old SUV Enthusiast
  • 00:11:00
and I'm an old SUV Enthusiast I have an
  • 00:11:02
old G wagon now I had an old Land Rover
  • 00:11:04
Defender I had an old Toyota Land
  • 00:11:06
Cruiser I have had all of the old SUVs
  • 00:11:09
and this that's the that's the world I
  • 00:11:11
live in and so getting into the NEOS
  • 00:11:13
Grenadier Felt Like Home to me in fact
  • 00:11:16
my only real criticism of the Grenadier
  • 00:11:18
aside from a few switch gear related
  • 00:11:20
things my only real criticism is I think
  • 00:11:22
the engine is too refined I think that
  • 00:11:25
the car the whole intent of the car was
  • 00:11:27
to be this blocky utilitarian truck but
  • 00:11:29
then they use this kind of smooth BMW
  • 00:11:31
    6-cylinder and it doesn't work and I
  • 00:11:34
wish that we in the states had gotten
  • 00:11:35
the diesel version which I imagine feels
  • 00:11:37
like a little bit more lumbering that's
  • 00:11:38
my criticism I actually think the power
  • 00:11:40
trade is too smooth um I think the car
  • 00:11:42
in general is a great example of what
  • 00:11:44
they were trying to do and I think the
  • 00:11:46
reviews that are negative about it
  • 00:11:47
missed the plot of what the car was
  • 00:11:50
supposed to be and I think they did a
  • 00:11:52
great job making the car precisely what
  • 00:11:54
it was supposed to be uh and I love it
  • 00:11:56
and I I love the inos Grenadier for what
  • 00:11:58
it is and I think it's a great execution
  • 00:12:02
of this thing that not many people want
  • 00:12:04
anymore but some still do proven by the
  • 00:12:06
sales okay next car where I disagree
  • 00:12:09
with everyone else the Lexus LFA I
  • 00:12:12
recently made a video about the most
  • 00:12:13
    disappointing cars I've reviewed talked
  • 00:12:15
about my experience with the LFA there
  • 00:12:16
I'll briefly mention it again here I
  • 00:12:18
have always felt that the LFA when the
  • 00:12:19
LFA was new the general sentiment among
  • 00:12:22
car reviewers among car Enthusiast was
  • 00:12:23
that the LFA was not that great of a car
  • 00:12:26
it took him decades to develop it it was
  • 00:12:28
laughable how long it took and then when
  • 00:12:29
it came out it didn't drive all that
  • 00:12:31
amazingly it didn't look all that great
  • 00:12:33
there were there were very few of them
  • 00:12:34
it was way too expensive there was not
  • 00:12:36
much interest in them honestly a lot of
  • 00:12:37
them sold to Lexus dealers who just
  • 00:12:39
bought them kind of to take Toyota and
  • 00:12:41
Lexus out of a Bine and over the years
  • 00:12:43
this Legend is grown oh the LFA is so
  • 00:12:45
cool and now I see people online and
  • 00:12:47
forums being like I've always loved the
  • 00:12:48
LFA and it's like no you didn't I was I
  • 00:12:51
was there I remember when that car was
  • 00:12:53
new there wasn't a lot of interest there
  • 00:12:55
wasn't a lot of desire for that car and
  • 00:12:57
now there's some revisionism going on
  • 00:12:59
but but the truth is as someone who's
  • 00:13:00
driven one I it's just not that great it
  • 00:13:02
doesn't drive all that well the
  • 00:13:03
    transmission is tremendously clunky I'll
  • 00:13:04
never forgive them for that you know
  • 00:13:06
they could have done a manual they could
  • 00:13:07
have waited and done dual clutch they
  • 00:13:08
didn't either they chose the worst
  • 00:13:09
    transmission option and it really
  • 00:13:11
affects the Driving Experience uh and I
  • 00:13:13
never found the car to be that good-look
  • 00:13:14
either it is the best sounding car ever
  • 00:13:16
made it really is I just wish the
  • 00:13:17
powertrain had gone into something else
  • 00:13:20
uh and I just don't agree with the
  • 00:13:21
    current prevailing sentiment about that
  • 00:13:23
car okay next car where I disagree with
  • 00:13:25
everyone else this is one that I will a
  • 00:13:27
hill I will die on the NC Mazda Miata
  • 00:13:30
this is the third generation Mazda Miata
  • 00:13:32
sold like 2006 to 2012 13 around there
  • 00:13:35
and people don't like this people call
  • 00:13:36
this the worst Miata which to me is like
  • 00:13:39
saying the worst Day in heaven like okay
  • 00:13:43
yeah it's the worst Miata I agree with
  • 00:13:45
that but like it's still if they had
  • 00:13:47
just come out with that car just the NC
  • 00:13:49
and there was no na NB or ND people
  • 00:13:51
would be like oh the Miata so cool
  • 00:13:54
people only don't like the NC because of
  • 00:13:55
the because they're able to compare it
  • 00:13:57
to the na andb and N D um it's a little
  • 00:13:59
bigger it's a little weird looking it
  • 00:14:01
doesn't drive quite as well you know it
  • 00:14:03
had lost a little of the plot from the
  • 00:14:04
earlier cars but not much driving and
  • 00:14:06
see it's still a thrilling car to drive
  • 00:14:08
it's fun to toss around it's got great
  • 00:14:10
steering and handling it's a really
  • 00:14:12
really nice car it's just fun it simply
  • 00:14:14
is a good fun car and I think people
  • 00:14:17
wrongly beat up on the NC Miata I think
  • 00:14:19
it totally deserves more praise than it
  • 00:14:21
gets and I really really have always
  • 00:14:23
enjoyed every experience that I've had
  • 00:14:24
in the NC uh I I prefer the ND I think
  • 00:14:27
the ND is the best Miata ever love the
  • 00:14:29
na and the NB of course certainly the NC
  • 00:14:31
is the worst Miata but again that's
  • 00:14:34
    that's hardly a complaint I mean it's
  • 00:14:36
still better than basically every other
  • 00:14:38
sporty car in its era uh it was just a
  • 00:14:41
really well executed car just maybe not
  • 00:14:43
as perfectly executed as some of the
  • 00:14:45
other Miatas okay next car where I
  • 00:14:47
disagree with everyone else this is a
  • 00:14:49
big disagreement I have with basically
  • 00:14:50
everyone else and that is the
  • 00:14:51
    mercedesbenz
  • 00:14:53
eqs which I absolutely adore a lot of
  • 00:14:57
people hate it and there's a lot of
  • 00:14:58
reasons to hate it uh a lot of you know
  • 00:15:01
car purist type people hate it cuz it's
  • 00:15:03
electric I don't want an electric car
  • 00:15:04
it's stupid okay fine then a lot of car
  • 00:15:06
enthusiasts even who are willing to
  • 00:15:08
accept an electric car hate it because
  • 00:15:09
it's ugly and I've seen some of the
  • 00:15:11
criticisms that this car has gotten that
  • 00:15:12
are totally unfair and I think some of
  • 00:15:14
it is on the fact that people really
  • 00:15:16
don't like how it looks and they have
  • 00:15:18
transferred that hatred to other parts
  • 00:15:19
of the car that it just doesn't deserve
  • 00:15:21
hatred for I've seen people call it low
  • 00:15:23
quality I've seen people complain about
  • 00:15:24
the ride I that is laughable to me as a
  • 00:15:28
guy who has has has spent a lot of time
  • 00:15:31
in comfortable cars because I hate
  • 00:15:32
getting beat up anymore the eqs is a
  • 00:15:35
    seriously comfortable car and the
  • 00:15:37
interior is really high quality another
  • 00:15:38
thing that car purists don't like about
  • 00:15:40
it is a lot of screens put a lot of
  • 00:15:41
screens in a car it's an easy way for
  • 00:15:43
automotive purist to be like that car
  • 00:15:44
    get 20
  • 00:15:46
screens but for those of us who actually
  • 00:15:49
know what consumers are looking for
  • 00:15:51
technology and screens is a big part of
  • 00:15:53
modern luxury cars and I think the
  • 00:15:55
criticism about the eqs has been way
  • 00:15:57
totally overblown it is a little bit
  • 00:15:59
weird looking but it's also kind of cool
  • 00:16:00
and futuristic and mostly it's just a
  • 00:16:02
damn good car it is comfortable it is
  • 00:16:04
high-tech it it it breaks a lot of the
  • 00:16:07
    things enthusiasts like it's electric
  • 00:16:08
they hate that it's weird looking they
  • 00:16:09
hate that it's it's way too many screens
  • 00:16:12
they hate that but for a luxury car
  • 00:16:14
buyer it is a damn good experience and I
  • 00:16:16
think the eqs is a seriously excellent
  • 00:16:19
car and if I were choosing between an
  • 00:16:20
eqs and an S-Class I would choose an eqs
  • 00:16:22
if I was buying one used cuz boy if
  • 00:16:24
    they'd appreciated mostly because
  • 00:16:26
    there's been a lot of criticism there's
  • 00:16:27
not a lot of buyers but I think get
  • 00:16:29
misplaced I think the eqs is a really
  • 00:16:31
great electric version of an S-Class and
  • 00:16:33
I am every time I'm able to drive a ride
  • 00:16:35
in one I am thrilled it is a nice car
  • 00:16:37
okay next one down of the last few cars
  • 00:16:39
where I disagree with everyone else uh
  • 00:16:42
this one is a little multifaceted I I'm
  • 00:16:44
going to first talk about the mini
  • 00:16:45
countrymen and then I want to talk about
  • 00:16:47
mini in general the mini Countryman gets
  • 00:16:49
a lot of hate because it's a crossover
  • 00:16:51
mini they took the mini it was so small
  • 00:16:52
they made an SUV and then people hate
  • 00:16:55
mini because of the same thing like the
  • 00:16:56
minis used to be cool and fun and now
  • 00:16:58
they're now they're dumb now big people
  • 00:17:00
say I I disagree dearly with this I
  • 00:17:03
think that the mini countrymen is the
  • 00:17:04
greatest little crossover there is yes
  • 00:17:06
it's an SUV ified mini and so from a
  • 00:17:08
purist perspective yes you can't make a
  • 00:17:10
mini when it's an SUV but like have you
  • 00:17:12
driven the other small luxury crossovers
  • 00:17:16
they all are the most boring Vehicles
  • 00:17:18
you will ever spend time in in your
  • 00:17:20
entire life have you have you bid in an
  • 00:17:22
Acura RDX have have you have you set
  • 00:17:25
foot in an Infinity qx50 no nobody has
  • 00:17:30
but you the point have you been an
  • 00:17:31
Alexus NX like those cars are so dull
  • 00:17:34
the mini countrymen is fun yes it is a
  • 00:17:37
SUV ified mini and so on that level it's
  • 00:17:40
bad but like from a SUV standpoint it is
  • 00:17:44
the most engaging and enjoyable one out
  • 00:17:47
there and if I were recommending to a
  • 00:17:49
    car Enthusiast which little luxury
  • 00:17:51
crossover to get you got to get an
  • 00:17:53
Countryman you just have to they're
  • 00:17:54
they're just the most fun the most
  • 00:17:57
    personality the most engaging and
  • 00:17:58
enjoyable and anybody who says anything
  • 00:18:00
else is lying to themselves this is also
  • 00:18:02
true of the mini brand there's a lot of
  • 00:18:04
criticism these days of the mini brand
  • 00:18:05
that I find totally misplaced yes the
  • 00:18:07
cars are not as cool as they were when
  • 00:18:09
it came out when the mini brand launched
  • 00:18:10
20 plus years ago there was a huge
  • 00:18:13
    amount of Enthusiast interest and
  • 00:18:14
support in those cars and a lot of the
  • 00:18:16
people who bought the early Mini Cooper
  • 00:18:17
s's were car enthusiasts it's hard to
  • 00:18:20
imagine that now I tell that to younger
  • 00:18:23
car enthusiasts and they don't believe
  • 00:18:24
me but it's true there were a lot of car
  • 00:18:27
enthusiasts in those cars at the time
  • 00:18:28
now Min has seen as a brand for sort of
  • 00:18:30
older people who want the Retro thing
  • 00:18:31
the cars still drive really well there's
  • 00:18:33
still fun little hot hatches everybody
  • 00:18:35
has kind of abandoned the hot hatch
  • 00:18:38
segment uh and a lot of those cars have
  • 00:18:40
gone away and people aren't paying as
  • 00:18:41
much attention as they used to but if
  • 00:18:43
you are the mini is still a fun car to
  • 00:18:45
drive it is still a legitimate thrill to
  • 00:18:47
drive and I still enjoy uh getting
  • 00:18:50
behind the wheel and driving a mini a
  • 00:18:51
new Mini I think is a fun nice good fast
  • 00:18:55
cool car and yes they're bigger now and
  • 00:18:57
they're four now and they've lost some
  • 00:18:58
of the fun of the old cars but you can
  • 00:19:00
still get a fun exciting hot hatchback
  • 00:19:02
Mini Cooper with a manual transmission
  • 00:19:04
to this day and I think there's
  • 00:19:06
something special about that even though
  • 00:19:08
people hate them CU they're not what
  • 00:19:09
they used to be they're still better
  • 00:19:11
than a lot of the stuff that's out there
  • 00:19:13
okay last two last two cars that I
  • 00:19:15
disagree with everyone else number one
  • 00:19:17
the Plymouth Prowler a lot of people
  • 00:19:19
    don't like this is a boomer it's a car
  • 00:19:21
for Boomers and it's an automatic with a
  • 00:19:23
Dodge and trepid V6 all true but it's
  • 00:19:25
still cool as hell uh the the prowler Is
  • 00:19:28
    Not Great to drop
  • 00:19:29
but it is so cool to look at and it is
  • 00:19:31
amazing to me that even as far as the
  • 00:19:33
late 1990s when there were so many
  • 00:19:35
regulatory challenges a company built a
  • 00:19:37
car like that from a pure Automotive
  • 00:19:40
Enthusiast standpoint it is amazing that
  • 00:19:43
that car ever got to production that is
  • 00:19:45
a concept car and you can drive it
  • 00:19:47
around with a trailer that looks like it
  • 00:19:50
it is cool as hell and I love the
  • 00:19:52
Plymouth Prowler and I think it is a
  • 00:19:54
really special car uh it is not great to
  • 00:19:56
drive it is more great from a existence
  • 00:19:59
standpoint from a look at it standpoint
  • 00:20:01
but you know what there are some cars
  • 00:20:02
that are better to look at and cooler to
  • 00:20:04
just possess than to drive and if that's
  • 00:20:07
one of them so be it I think the prowler
  • 00:20:09
is a is a neat car and it's a neat
  • 00:20:11
exercise in Automobilia on the same
  • 00:20:13
topic but flip the other way the last
  • 00:20:16
car where I disagree with everyone else
  • 00:20:17
is the Pontiac Solstice there's a lot of
  • 00:20:19
complaints out there about the solstice
  • 00:20:21
    from enthusiasts who always complain
  • 00:20:22
that it was never the car that the Miata
  • 00:20:24
was and that is true uh the solstice was
  • 00:20:27
heavier bigger uh and it never quite was
  • 00:20:29
they never they tried to come out with a
  • 00:20:31
Miata but they didn't really understand
  • 00:20:33
quite what made the Miata so special
  • 00:20:34
which was just its small toss Bess and
  • 00:20:37
the solstice lost some of that but it
  • 00:20:38
did gain some other stuff the solstice
  • 00:20:40
looked better than any Miata I think and
  • 00:20:43
and so did the Saturn Sky I think there
  • 00:20:44
were really cool looking cars but the
  • 00:20:46
other cool thing about the solstice in
  • 00:20:47
the sky was the availability of the GXP
  • 00:20:50
and the redline model which was this
  • 00:20:51
    turbocharged 2 L 4cylinder with 260
  • 00:20:53
horsepower I love the Miata dearly but
  • 00:20:56
every Miata has always felt underpowered
  • 00:20:58
to me except maybe the NB Mazda speed
  • 00:21:01
the solers in the sky were bigger than
  • 00:21:03
the Miata but they gave you this
  • 00:21:05
    powerful engine which was actually
  • 00:21:06
pretty available like they were they
  • 00:21:07
were commonly seen even still and you
  • 00:21:10
could really beat on it a 260 horsepower
  • 00:21:13
Saturn Sky Pon exas was a cool car it
  • 00:21:15
was fun to drive it was fast unlike the
  • 00:21:17
Miata and it may not have quite had the
  • 00:21:20
the exact like little car charm that the
  • 00:21:23
Miata did it didn't have that um but it
  • 00:21:25
had a lot of it it was close and it had
  • 00:21:26
a lot more power it was a more muscle to
  • 00:21:29
it and I think the solit in the sky are
  • 00:21:31
unfairly vilified for not doing the
  • 00:21:33
Miata formula right when in reality what
  • 00:21:35
they did was a takeoff on the Miata
  • 00:21:36
formula that I think was actually pretty
  • 00:21:38
good which was a little bigger car a
  • 00:21:40
    little more substantial more expressive
  • 00:21:42
    styling and this massively powerful
  • 00:21:44
power Trin that you can get 260 horses
  • 00:21:46
in a car like that is good power and I
  • 00:21:49
think those cars deserve more love than
  • 00:21:51
they get from enthusiasts they are also
  • 00:21:52
viewed as kind of a baby boomer car you
  • 00:21:55
know take it to car shows and shine it
  • 00:21:56
up and I actually think if a if carent
  • 00:21:58
younger car enthusiasts got in a manual
  • 00:22:00
sky red line they would be pretty
  • 00:22:02
impressed with how it drives dynamically
  • 00:22:04
how fast it is especially if they were
  • 00:22:06
coming out of something like an NC or an
  • 00:22:07
ND Miata they would say wow you know
  • 00:22:09
this may not quite be the D Dynamic car
  • 00:22:12
but it does have performance that is
  • 00:22:13
that is pretty impressive so there you
  • 00:22:16
go the car is where I disagree with
  • 00:22:18
everyone else there's not many but there
  • 00:22:21
are some and my disagreements are I'm
  • 00:22:24
sure going to elicit a lot of complaints
  • 00:22:27
in the comments so I'm excited to hear
  • 00:22:28
them and see how you disagree with me
  • 00:22:30
especially about the Lexus LFA I know
  • 00:22:32
you love it you always loved it I know I
  • 00:22:34
know uh but those are my disagreements
  • 00:22:37
remember they are just mine subjective
  • 00:22:39
opinion you can have your own it's fine
  • 00:22:41
    but that's how I feel
  • 00:22:43
