Disney is Perfectly Happy With Their Catastrophic Downfall
概要
TLDRThe video articulates that Disney has lost much of its former charm by producing uninspired films and altering classic narratives, leading to substantial financial losses, including declining box office sales and falling stock prices. Once celebrated during the "Disney Renaissance" era (1989-1999) for producing iconic films like "The Lion King" and "Toy Story," Disney now faces criticism for its heavy reliance on acquiring competing studios like Pixar and Marvel, which provided some respite by bringing in successful films. Additionally, Disney's attempts to diversify its narratives to reflect societal changes have stirred controversies, including debates on LGBTQ representation. To compound issues, recent live-action remakes have seen dwindling returns, provoking further discussion on whether Disney's current strategy prioritizes profits over creative storytelling. The company is tangled in varying narratives about corporate obligations, inclusivity, and investor appeasement, questioning whether their recent choices genuinely reflect societal progressiveness or merely aim to secure investor confidence.

タイムライン
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
Disney has been criticized for lackluster films and altering classic stories, along with purchasing and changing competitive film studios. This has led to significant financial losses and a decline in Disney's iconic status. During the Disney Renaissance (1989-1999), Disney produced numerous hit films, earning critical acclaim and substantial box office revenue, subsequently influencing culture and music trends.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Pixar's rise began in the late 80s with short films, leading to a partnership with Disney, resulting in 'Toy Story', which became a pivotal moment in animation history. The influence of Pixar and the Disney Renaissance era was profound in shaping popular culture and creating memorable films that taught valuable life lessons, although they received some criticisms for mature themes and stereotypes.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
Disney Channel's emergence in the 2000s marked a new era, capitalizing on live-action shows that portrayed tween life realistically. Despite setbacks in animation and competition from studios like DreamWorks, Disney managed to produce hits like 'Lilo and Stitch'. However, Disney's strategy still involved acquiring successful studios, exemplified by their purchase of Pixar in 2006, which allowed continued success through hits like 'Cars' and 'Up'.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
In the 2010s, Disney strategically acquired Marvel and Lucasfilm, ushering in a new era of box office successes like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and new Star Wars films. Despite criticisms about changing iconic narratives, particularly from Star Wars fans, Disney experienced financial and cultural dominance with releases that included 'Frozen' and various Pixar successes, continuing their trend of major box office hits.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
The exit of Pixar's Jon Lasseter marked a decline in Pixar's success with several box office flops in the 2020s. Disney's animation division similarly struggled to recapture previous success, experiencing failures with films not resonating as expected, possibly due to prioritizing progressive agendas over storytelling. Despite attempts to innovate with live-action remakes, the constant revisiting of old content led to mixed results.
- 00:25:00 - 00:32:33
Facing backlash for its corporate social responsibility and inclusive policies, Disney was criticized for prioritizing CEI scores and satisfying investors over creative storytelling. A perceived decline in originality and the focus on profitability through acquisitions has led to financial losses and audience dissatisfaction, showing a potential over reliance on past successes rather than creating new groundbreaking stories.

- 00:00:00Disney is no longer the magical
- 00:00:01wonder-filled universe that it was when
- 00:00:04we were growing up not only have they
- 00:00:06been making uninspiring lackluster new
- 00:00:08films but they have been going back and
- 00:00:09changing old stories altering the

- 00:00:15competitive film studios who are
- 00:00:17actually making cinematic masterpieces
- 00:00:19and drag them into the mud but the
- 00:00:21people have had enough with Disney's
- 00:00:23boring and Bleak vision for the future
- 00:00:25they are losing hundreds of millions of
- 00:00:27dollars bombing at the box office with
- 00:00:29record low sales stock prices dropping
- 00:00:31to the lowest in decades and while you
- 00:00:33think this may be an indication they
- 00:00:34need to change it is only going to get
- 00:00:37worse the real reason Disney is refusing
- 00:00:39to pay attention to their imminent Doom
- 00:00:41is much deeper and darker than you could
- 00:00:43ever imagine you are not just blinded by
- 00:00:45Nostalgia Disney was actually at its
- 00:00:47peak from 1989 to 1999. this was known
- 00:00:51as the Disney Renaissance where some of
- 00:00:53their best movies were created The
- 00:00:55Little Mermaid Beauty and the Beast
- 00:00:57Aladdin The Lion King Pocahontas her
- 00:00:59Hercules Mulan Tarzan these eight
- 00:01:02classics all received an overwhelmingly
- 00:01:04positive critical reception but more
- 00:01:06importantly the fans loved it each film
- 00:01:09generated hundreds of millions of
- 00:01:10dollars in the box office The Lion King
- 00:01:12earned the most at nearly 1 billion
- 00:01:14dollars making it the 57th most
- 00:01:17successful film of all time these films
- 00:01:19were so successful that even their
- 00:01:20soundtracks were selling millions of
- 00:01:22copies The Little Mermaid six times
- 00:01:24Platinum Beauty and the Beast three
- 00:01:25times Platinum Aladdin three times
- 00:01:27Platinum Pocahontas three times Platinum
- 00:01:30The Lion King reached Diamond status now
- 00:01:32I did skip over possibly the most iconic
- 00:01:35animated film of the 90s Toy Story and
- 00:01:38that's because Disney did not actually
- 00:01:40create this film in the 80s Pixar was
- 00:01:42just an animation group making
- 00:01:44commercials as a step towards their
- 00:01:46ultimate goal of making an animated
- 00:01:48feature film The Studio made shorts to
- 00:01:50test their render man software and
- 00:01:52produce animation challenges for the
- 00:01:54team tin toy successfully garnered
- 00:01:56attention from Disney who wanted to
- 00:01:57expand the idea making a film from the
- 00:01:59the perspective of a toy they developed
- 00:02:02a relationship where Disney agreed to
- 00:02:03distribute three films for Pixar as well
- 00:02:06as provide connections and budget to
- 00:02:08land Superstars Tom Hanks and Tim Allen
- 00:02:10as lead roles but Pixar had never
- 00:02:12written a movie luckily their co-founder
- 00:02:14John Lasseter had previously been an
- 00:02:16employee of Disney and worked on The Fox
- 00:02:18and the Hound so Jon was tasked with
- 00:02:20writing Pixar's first film he spent
- 00:02:22nearly two years working on the first
- 00:02:24version of Toy Story that depicted Woody
- 00:02:26as a cynical jerk who said your job was
- 00:02:29to think spring weiner I just thought
- 00:02:32you was this vast reserve of brain power
- 00:02:34to consider this for a moment if it
- 00:02:36wasn't for me Andy wouldn't pay any
- 00:02:38attention to you at all in fact my
- 00:02:40stretchy friend you would have been
- 00:02:41hauled away to Goodwill a long time ago
- 00:02:43so shut your mouth and get them off the
- 00:02:45bed when Pixar pitched this Disney
- 00:02:47Executives hated it they thought the
- 00:02:49characters were mean-spirited and would
- 00:02:51send the wrong message to children so
- 00:02:53they shut down production of the film
- 00:02:55Jon was embarrassed and begged for
- 00:02:57another chance Disney gave him two weeks
- 00:02:59to develop another version the second
- 00:03:01iteration of the film depicted a
- 00:03:03perspective of toys who desperately want
- 00:03:05to be played with because they love and
- 00:03:07care about their owners deeply Disney
- 00:03:08green lit the film and luckily it paid
- 00:03:11off in 1995 Toy Story released and
- 00:03:14earned 373 million dollars worldwide
- 00:03:17becoming the second highest grossing
- 00:03:19film of 1995 the first ever full-length
- 00:03:22computer-generated film and a classic
- 00:03:24that shaped the childhoods of millions
- 00:03:26Pixar and Disney followed that up with A
- 00:03:28Bug's Life and Toy Story 2 adding to the
- 00:03:31catalog of amazing films but it wasn't
- 00:03:33just these animated films that made
- 00:03:35Disney so iconic during the Renaissance
- 00:03:37you also had the Mighty Ducks Cool
- 00:03:39Runnings Angels in the Outfield The
- 00:03:41Jungle Book Hocus Pocus The Parent Trap
- 00:03:43heavyweights let me know some of your
- 00:03:45favorites it's also important to
- 00:03:47understand that during the 90s Disney
- 00:03:49also owned two major Production Studios
- 00:03:51Touchstone and Hollywood pictures
- 00:03:53Touchstone produced Armageddon Pretty
- 00:03:56Woman Dead Poet Society Sister Act while
- 00:03:59Hollywood pictures produced Tombstone
- 00:04:01The Sixth Sense and a bunch of others I
- 00:04:03don't personally recognize in short
- 00:04:05Disney absolutely dominated the 90s they
- 00:04:08created iconic moments of magic that
- 00:04:10taught us valuable life lessons they
- 00:04:12taught us right and wrong never pretend

- 00:04:34was critiqued for her sexualized design
- 00:04:36objectifying and misrepresenting her
- 00:04:38character the 1989 VHS cover of The
- 00:04:40Little Mermaid was banned and later
- 00:04:42changed when people noticed it contained
- 00:04:44phallic imagery but these days many
- 00:04:46people think we should have been harsher
- 00:04:48on Disney films in the 90s which has
- 00:04:49caused people to go back in the past and
- 00:04:51become critical of what they thought

- 00:06:10they also thought that the casting of
- 00:06:12white actor Robin Williams to voice the
- 00:06:14genie who is a mystical being living in
- 00:06:16a lamp was considered whitewashing since
- 00:06:18the character had cultural connotations
- 00:06:19associated with the Middle East Disney
- 00:06:22also went back and changed controversial
- 00:06:24lyrics in the song Arabian Nights a joke
- 00:06:26from the bloopers reel in Toy Story 2
- 00:06:28raised so much controversy in 2019 that

- 00:06:42this joke didn't age well Pocahontas was
- 00:06:45accused of appropriating and

- 00:06:49profit without showing proper respect or
- 00:06:50understanding of the cultures and
- 00:06:52traditions they were depicting while
- 00:06:54also being too historically inaccurate
- 00:06:56they also depicted a relationship that
- 00:06:58falsely represented how natives fell
- 00:06:59about European settlers their song
- 00:07:01Savages is a war song in the film with
- 00:07:04some questionable lyrics their whole
- 00:07:06disgusting race is like a curse their

- 00:07:10when dead they're different from us
- 00:07:11which means they must be evil people
- 00:07:13were angry that they made such an
- 00:07:14abhorrent song into a catchy tune
- 00:07:16however Defenders simply say that this
- 00:07:18is an accurate way to depict how
- 00:07:19horrifying and absurd their mindset was
- 00:07:21Disney did go back and change some of
- 00:07:23the lyrics from their whole disgusting
- 00:07:25race is like a curse to here's what you
- 00:07:28get when the races are diverse however
- 00:07:30there is no argument that the
- 00:07:32Renaissance Era was Disney's Peak and
- 00:07:34the only reason they survived throughout
- 00:07:36the 2000s was because of their ability
- 00:07:37to buy the companies that were actually
- 00:07:39making great art the 2000s is often
- 00:07:42described as Disney's experimental era
- 00:07:44because the company started trying
- 00:07:46different Ventures to keep their
- 00:07:47billions flowing in the Disney Channel
- 00:07:49was their Venture into daytime
- 00:07:51television and was the last original
- 00:07:52creation before they kind of gave up
- 00:07:54Even Stevens and Lizzie McGuire were
- 00:07:57their first big successes in the
- 00:07:58live-action sect which led to huge hits
- 00:08:01like that's a raven Suite Life of Zack
- 00:08:03and Cody Hannah Montana and Wizards of
- 00:08:05Waverly Place these shows rooted our
- 00:08:07problems as tweens into reality they
- 00:08:09depicted fun adventures while also
- 00:08:11tackling real problems like how to talk
- 00:08:13to your first crush how to combat
- 00:08:15bullies going through puberty among
- 00:08:17other Growing Pains every single one of
- 00:08:19their successful TV shows were turned
- 00:08:21into movies which speaks to their
- 00:08:23experimental nature but they also
- 00:08:24produced original TV movies like Smart
- 00:08:26House Cadet Kelly the Halloweentown
- 00:08:29series and of course High School Musical
- 00:08:31for the people that didn't grow up
- 00:08:32during this era it's hard to describe
- 00:08:34how much the Disney Channel impacted
- 00:08:36children kids in the 50s through the 70s
- 00:08:38pretty much only watched cartoons on
- 00:08:40Saturday mornings 80s and 90s kids
- 00:08:42watched before school and after school
- 00:08:44but had less variety and autonomy over
- 00:08:46what they were watching early 2000s kids
- 00:08:48grew up with multiple TVs in the house
- 00:08:50if parents wanted to control the
- 00:08:52television they likely had a playroom TV
- 00:08:54or bedroom TV where they could watch
- 00:08:55whatever they want they had DVRs
- 00:08:57playback software endless amounts of
- 00:08:59reruns and even multiple channels that
- 00:09:01aired the same shows Disney Channel
- 00:09:03shows were averaging anywhere from 4 to
- 00:09:0510 million viewers on the premieres
- 00:09:07alone Hannah Montana and the Cheetah
- 00:09:09Girls became International Superstars
- 00:09:11doing Stadium tours with 10 000 plus
- 00:09:13people singing songs that were based on
- 00:09:15a Disney Channel TV show and while their
- 00:09:17live-action TV thrived their animated TV
- 00:09:20shows were much weaker than competitors
- 00:09:21Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network but they
- 00:09:23still had some solid new additions with
- 00:09:25the proud family Kim Possible and
- 00:09:27Phineas and Ferb all of those also got
- 00:09:29there on TV movies but if it wasn't for
- 00:09:31Pixar Disney's animated film presence
- 00:09:33would have tanked they started the 2000s
- 00:09:35with The Emperor's New Groove which fans
- 00:09:38loved but it failed to meet the
- 00:09:39financial success of the Renaissance Era
- 00:09:41films only profiting about 70 million
- 00:09:43dollars which isn't enough for Disney
- 00:09:45from here hand-drawn animation was being
- 00:09:47considered Obsolete and Disney had not
- 00:09:49been working on computer-generated
- 00:09:51animation to make things worse there was
- 00:09:53new competition on the horizon
- 00:09:55DreamWorks Disney created a competitor
- 00:09:57to Pixar and DreamWorks called Secret
- 00:09:59lab but the films they produce failed to
- 00:10:01meet expectations dinosaur was their
- 00:10:032000 film that featured CGI prehistoric
- 00:10:06creatures the movie was just all right
- 00:10:08not impressive enough for their CGI
- 00:10:10debut it secured over 300 million
- 00:10:12dollars in the box office but they
- 00:10:13expected more secret lab closed down
- 00:10:15after one failure Pixar exploded again
- 00:10:18with Monsters Inc and DreamWorks came
- 00:10:20out of the gates hot with chicken run
- 00:10:21and Shrek Shrek 2 secured 900 million
- 00:10:25dollars in the box office Disney was
- 00:10:27trembling the Lilo and Stitch movie was
- 00:10:29the last original bona fide hit Disney
- 00:10:31had since the 90s grossing 273 million
- 00:10:34dollars but it still didn't even come
- 00:10:36close to Pixar Finding Nemo grossed
- 00:10:38nearly 1 billion dollars worldwide the
- 00:10:41incredible 600 million dollars Monsters
- 00:10:43Inc 500 million but it wasn't even just
- 00:10:45the money Disney's animation was
- 00:10:46outdated and their storylines were
- 00:10:48almost exactly the same from 1989 now
- 00:10:50until the 2000s they knew they could not
- 00:10:53compete with the creativity of Pixar
- 00:10:54DreamWorks so CEO Bob Iger decided to
- 00:10:57acquire Pixar in 2006 for 7.4 billion
- 00:11:01dollars every movie after 2006 by Pixar
- 00:11:04could technically be considered a Disney
- 00:11:06movie but John Lasseter at Pixar was not
- 00:11:09going to let them ruin his films he
- 00:11:11demanded that Disney Executives have
- 00:11:12little power over the creative direction
- 00:11:14of Pixar films and since Disney needed
- 00:11:17Pixar they obliged and saw even more
- 00:11:20success cars Ratatouille Wally Up Pixar
- 00:11:23saved Disney but only for a little bit
- 00:11:26to make matters worse for Disney they
- 00:11:28were struggling to find big success in
- 00:11:29live-action films there was really only
- 00:11:31two films that carried this era Pirates
- 00:11:33of the Caribbean which became a
- 00:11:35multi-billion dollar series over the
- 00:11:37next two decades and Chronicles of
- 00:11:39Narnia which also grossed over a billion
- 00:11:41dollars worldwide even though that was
- 00:11:43technically a spin-off from a book
- 00:11:44series written in the 50s other than
- 00:11:46that we got some cult classics like The
- 00:11:48Princess Diaries Freaky Friday Bridge to
- 00:11:50Terabithia and Remember the Titans
- 00:11:52however as we went into the 2010s Disney
- 00:11:54Channel ratings started to dwindle the
- 00:11:56only show still gaining viewership was
- 00:11:58Wizards of Waverly place by that point
- 00:12:00kids like me were in high school and
- 00:12:02moving on from Disney it seemed like
- 00:12:04every sector of their business was
- 00:12:05facing imminent disaster as we passed
- 00:12:072010. their TV cartoons weren't as good
- 00:12:10as Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network their
- 00:12:12animated films weren't as good as Pixar
- 00:12:13and DreamWorks their live-action TV
- 00:12:15shows were losing Steam and honestly
- 00:12:17they never really had booming success
- 00:12:19with live-action films aside from a few
- 00:12:21so instead of buckling down figuring out
- 00:12:23where they are going wrong figuring out
- 00:12:25how to create wonderful imaginative
- 00:12:27universes like they did in the 90s and
- 00:12:29for nearly 100 years before they took
- 00:12:32the easy way out and just bought out
- 00:12:33companies who were actually making great
- 00:12:35art Disney actually has a long history
- 00:12:37of buying companies that are competing
- 00:12:39with them or buying into Industries they
- 00:12:41want to take part in like in 1993 they
- 00:12:43purchased the Mighty Ducks hockey team
- 00:12:45and the California Angels baseball team
- 00:12:47why because they wanted to make a hockey
- 00:12:49movie in a baseball movie and they
- 00:12:50weren't just gonna waste an opportunity
- 00:12:51to create a money-making professional
- 00:12:53sports Empire while they failed but the
- 00:12:56movies were pretty good then in 1996
- 00:12:57they purchased ESPN as a whole when they
- 00:13:00acquired ABC Inc and to save you a bunch
- 00:13:02of time this is every single company
- 00:13:04that Disney owns today real estate
- 00:13:06companies theme parks merchandising Vice
- 00:13:09National Geographic Hulu and even GoPro
- 00:13:11Disney has their white gloves in just
- 00:13:13about every business imaginable they
- 00:13:15were once a company that took pride in
- 00:13:17creating cinematic masterpieces to last
- 00:13:19decades with the help of Bob Iger they
- 00:13:21became focused on one thing and one
- 00:13:24thing only profit and in the start of
- 00:13:26the 2010s they did pretty dang good
- 00:13:28after they purchased Marvel
- 00:13:29entertainment for 4.4 billion many
- 00:13:32people thought Disney acquiring Marvel
- 00:13:34would remove some of the edge these
- 00:13:36Marvel characters had just like Jon
- 00:13:37Lasseter made sure Disney didn't ruin
- 00:13:39Pixar Marvel's president Kevin feige was
- 00:13:42going to continue to control the
- 00:13:43creative direction for future films
- 00:13:45Kevin produced most of the iconic Marvel
- 00:13:47movies in the early 2000s Spider-Man 1 2
- 00:13:50and 3 Iron Man The Incredible Hulk
- 00:13:52Fantastic Four Marvel was on fire and
- 00:13:55Disney's Newfound ownership would
- 00:13:56surprisingly make things better in the
- 00:13:58beginning feige had a for the Marvel
- 00:14:00Cinematic Universe that no one had
- 00:14:01attempted before on the big screen his
- 00:14:04plan was to make an interconnected
- 00:14:05Universe of films all building to one
- 00:14:07finale Iron Man 2 Thor Captain America
- 00:14:10they came out of the gates hot The
- 00:14:12Avengers securing 1.5 billion dollars
- 00:14:15worldwide which made it the third
- 00:14:16highest grossing film of all time in
- 00:14:182012 Iron Man 3 Thor the Dark World the
- 00:14:22Winter Soldier Guardians of the Galaxy
- 00:14:24Ant-Man Marvel was releasing two huge
- 00:14:27feature films per year and each time it
- 00:14:29was a cultural event all the way up
- 00:14:31through 2019 there were breaking records
- 00:14:33left and right Deadpool Thor Ragnarok
- 00:14:35Deadpool 2 Venom all were massive then
- 00:14:38black panther becoming the highest
- 00:14:40grossing film directed by a black
- 00:14:42filmmaker grossing over 1.3 billion
- 00:14:44dollars the film celebrated Black
- 00:14:46Culture in a groundbreaking way offering
- 00:14:48a vision of Africa through the fictional
- 00:14:50nation of wakanda that was rich Advanced
- 00:14:52and uncolonized the film showcased a
- 00:14:55specific beautiful black aesthetic from
- 00:14:57Afrocentric natural hair to careful
- 00:14:59designed costumes drawing from various
- 00:15:01African references this attention to
- 00:15:03detail reflected the diversity of black
- 00:15:05culture and identity but the two movies
- 00:15:07that wrapped up Marvel's decade-long
- 00:15:08dominance are Avengers Infinity war and
- 00:15:11Avengers end game Infinity War grossed 2
- 00:15:13billion at the box office making it the
- 00:15:15highest grossing superhero film of all
- 00:15:17time only to be beaten by endgame the
- 00:15:20next year 2.7 billion dollars worldwide
- 00:15:23many people believe these two movies are
- 00:15:25in the top 10 best superhero films of
- 00:15:27all time and they also believe them to
- 00:15:29be the end of Marvel's dominance after
- 00:15:31all it was Kevin feige's Vision to build
- 00:15:33all these stories throughout the years
- 00:15:35until they came together an end game
- 00:15:36Pixar continued to steamroll ahead in
- 00:15:39the 2010s Toy Story 3 became the highest
- 00:15:41grossing animated film of all time Brave
- 00:15:43which was a new story that became a
- 00:15:45massive hit earning half a billion in
- 00:15:46the box office Monsters University
- 00:15:48grossed over 700 million then Inside Out
- 00:15:51was even bigger at 850 million Finding
- 00:15:53Dory was another billion dollar box
- 00:15:55office success if you look at Pixar's
- 00:15:57catalog from 1995 to 27 teen they had
- 00:16:00one flop one of the most impressive runs
- 00:16:02in history Disney was in Total
- 00:16:03Domination at the start of the 2010s
- 00:16:05yeah they were being carried by their
- 00:16:07Acquisitions but they made a short
- 00:16:08comeback from their own Animation Studio
- 00:16:10Wreck-It Ralph in 2012 was a very Pixar
- 00:16:13inspired film about the lives of video
- 00:16:15game characters inside the arcade
- 00:16:16machines earning a solid 500 million at
- 00:16:19the box office got the momentum building
- 00:16:20for what was about to come Frozen the
- 00:16:23highest grossing animated film of all
- 00:16:25time beating out Toy Story 3 1.28
- 00:16:28billion dollars but the success of
- 00:16:30Frozen was more than just money Disney
- 00:16:32was able to recreate the magic and
- 00:16:34cultural dominance they had in the 90s
- 00:16:36an original princess movie with
- 00:16:38addicting musical performances valuable
- 00:16:40life lessons for kids like learning to
- 00:16:42be brave take risks communicate your
- 00:16:44conflicts and always love your friends
- 00:16:46and family it just felt right to see my
- 00:16:48little sister have an iconic Disney film
- 00:16:50to grow up with then they followed up
- 00:16:52with Big Hero 6 and Moana both solid
- 00:16:54additions to the new Pixar inspired
- 00:16:56Disney catalog they also took a big step
- 00:16:58Progressive in 2014 on an episode of
- 00:17:01Good Luck Charlie Disney displayed a
- 00:17:03same-sex couple for the first time
- 00:17:06Taylor has two moms something that would
- 00:17:10become a key part of all of their films
- 00:17:12years later their live action film
- 00:17:13Cinderella and the Jungle Book were also
- 00:17:15huge hits Beauty and the Beast earned
- 00:17:17over one billion dollars by the
- 00:17:19mid-2010s everything was booming again
- 00:17:21Disney just could not miss in 2012 they
- 00:17:24purchased lucasfilm the creators of Star
- 00:17:27Wars for four billion dollars although
- 00:17:29this acquisition financially would be
- 00:17:30fruitful for Disney there are a lot of
- 00:17:32mixed opinions regarding the execution
- 00:17:34of these films their first release with
- 00:17:36lucasfilm was in 2015 Star Wars the
- 00:17:38Force awakens which as it sits is the
- 00:17:4111th highest grossing film of all time
- 00:17:43adjusted for inflation earning two
- 00:17:44billion dollars a huge success but it
- 00:17:47didn't actually continue the Star Wars
- 00:17:48story that was developed for the past 40
- 00:17:50years it's like they changed everything
- 00:17:52the fans knew and loved about their
- 00:17:54characters and wrote a new story
- 00:17:55visually it was stunning and people who
- 00:17:57were new to the franchise adored it but
- 00:17:59longtime fans were disappointed hoping
- 00:18:01the second film would be better Rogue
- 00:18:03one in 2016 took a bit of a risk casting
- 00:18:05lesser known or at the time not A-list
- 00:18:07actors Felicity Jones and Diego Luna
- 00:18:10Disney Executives were supposedly not
- 00:18:12fully satisfied with the first cut and
- 00:18:14will bring in writer and director Tony
- 00:18:15Gilroy to help with the movie with his
- 00:18:17help streamlining at all
- 00:18:18reconceptualizing the story reshooting
- 00:18:20scenes and editing with the iconic Darth
- 00:18:22Vader fight scene being added right at
- 00:18:24the end of filming the movie would be a
- 00:18:26huge hit it was the last critically
- 00:18:27acclaimed and beloved Star Wars movie
- 00:18:29despite having a billion dollar decrease
- 00:18:31in revenue from the previous one Star
- 00:18:33Wars is a multi-generational classic
- 00:18:36that is always going to bring in Revenue
- 00:18:37due to it being the most popular film
- 00:18:39franchise of all time using Revenue
- 00:18:41alone is not an accurate representation
- 00:18:43of how the community felt about these
- 00:18:45films and there are people who dedicate
- 00:18:47their entire lives diving into the
- 00:18:49insane complexity that is this Cinematic
- 00:18:51Universe that Georgia Lucas created so
- 00:18:53to sit here and describe where every
- 00:18:54film went wrong would take forever but
- 00:18:56there is some crucial information to
- 00:18:58understand why Disney tainted the Star
- 00:19:00Wars legacy Disney CEO Bob Iger wrote in
- 00:19:03his 2019 Memoir that George Lucas wrote
- 00:19:06outlines for for a Star Wars Trilogy Bob
- 00:19:08said we needed to buy them though we
- 00:19:10made it clear in the purchase agreement
- 00:19:11that we would not be contractually
- 00:19:12obligated to adhere to the plot lines he
- 00:19:15had laid out instead Disney gave
- 00:19:16creative control to director JJ Abrams
- 00:19:19screenwriter Michael arnt and lucasfilm
- 00:19:21president Kathleen Kennedy from the very
- 00:19:23beginning George Lucas saw them ruining
- 00:19:25his vision for the trilogy he felt
- 00:19:26betrayed Disney loved his ideas and
- 00:19:29bought him out only to change everything
- 00:19:30they loved and instead of them coming up
- 00:19:32with their own cohesive story they let
- 00:19:34multiple directors take the leads for
- 00:19:36different films Ryan Johnson for The
- 00:19:37Last Jedi and JJ Abrams for the rise of
- 00:19:40Skywalker critics say these films
- 00:19:41subvert our expectations but that's just
- 00:19:44a fancy way of saying it's unpredictable
- 00:19:45and just because it's unpredictable
- 00:19:47doesn't mean it's good the film's
- 00:19:49decisions regarding character arcs plot
- 00:19:51twists and the identity of certain
- 00:19:52characters felt totally random and
- 00:19:55lacked continuity going against the man
- 00:19:57who created this franchise obviously
- 00:19:59pissed off longtime fans and although
- 00:20:01each movie brought in serious profits
- 00:20:03they felt like Disney took advantage of
- 00:20:05George Lucas and the massive Star Wars
- 00:20:07Community financially speaking
- 00:20:09throughout the 2010s Disney Reigns
- 00:20:10Supreme with almost no dents in their
- 00:20:12armor but the only way to go from here
- 00:20:14was down starting with Pixar the studio
- 00:20:16that saved them 20 years earlier Jon
- 00:20:19Lasseter Pixar and Walt Disney Animation
- 00:20:22Studios Chief creative officer took a
- 00:20:24leave of absence in 2017 after
- 00:20:26Revelations last year that he sexually
- 00:20:28harassed multiple employees during his
- 00:20:30tenure at Pixar Jon was known for
- 00:20:32grabbing kissing making comments about
- 00:20:35physical attributes John responded with
- 00:20:37I've recently had a number of difficult
- 00:20:39conversations that have been very
- 00:20:40painful for me it's never easy to face
- 00:20:42your missteps but it's the only way to
- 00:20:44learn from them Lasseter made himself
- 00:20:46the victim hoping to gain sympathy of
- 00:20:48those who oppose this sudden metoo
- 00:20:50movement Disney didn't fire him until he
- 00:20:52finished the projects that he was
- 00:20:53working on he stayed there for another
- 00:20:55year to finish Incredibles 2 and Toy
- 00:20:57Story 4. both were massive commercial
- 00:20:59and critical successes although Jon was
- 00:21:01exposed for being a Relentless creep
- 00:21:03deserving of his termination there is no
- 00:21:05doubt that he was the creative genius at
- 00:21:07Pixar after he left Pixar died onward
- 00:21:11was a box office flop and received
- 00:21:13controversy for this clip it's not easy
- 00:21:15being a new parent Michael girlfriend's
- 00:21:17daughter got me pulling my hair out okay
- 00:21:19the officer mentions her girlfriend's
- 00:21:21daughter obviously stating that she is a
- 00:21:23lesbian most people didn't even notice
- 00:21:25this quick line in fact the lgbtq
- 00:21:27community was pretty happy about it
- 00:21:28however this short scene got the film
- 00:21:30banned in multiple Middle Eastern
- 00:21:32countries from there Seoul was a flop
- 00:21:34Luca was a flop turning red managed to
- 00:21:37barely make a profit but when you
- 00:21:38consider marketing expenses it's still a
- 00:21:40flop Pixar was spending 100 to 200
- 00:21:43million dollars per film to make these
- 00:21:44detailed beautiful universes but lacked
- 00:21:47any decent storytelling to keep you
- 00:21:48engaged light year was the unforeseen
- 00:21:50spin-off of Toy Story's Buzz Lightyear
- 00:21:52and in this one Pixar took their
- 00:21:54inclusion to new heights when they
- 00:21:56displayed a same-sex couple kissing
- 00:21:58conservatives claimed a light year was
- 00:22:00an attempt by Disney to indoctrinate
- 00:22:02children and shape their beliefs social
- 00:22:04media saw a firestorm of different
- 00:22:06opinions online and the movie failed in
- 00:22:08the box office but not just because of
- 00:22:10controversy it's because they depicted
- 00:22:11Buzz as more of a human than the toy we
- 00:22:13all know and love it was voiced by not
- 00:22:16Tim Allen and it's An Origin story that
- 00:22:18nobody really needed in the first place
- 00:22:20it's hard to say what exactly went wrong
- 00:22:22at Pixar in the past few years it can't
- 00:22:24Simply Be Lassiter's exit because he was
- 00:22:26hired by Sky dance animations and their
- 00:22:28first movie luck was a commercial and
- 00:22:30critical failure Pixar has never had so
- 00:22:32many failures commercially and
- 00:22:34critically in their entire history they
- 00:22:36are on life support and don't know how
- 00:22:37to save themselves the next sector of
- 00:22:39Disney's business to go was their own
- 00:22:41Animation Studio instead of taking risks
- 00:22:43on new story lines they continue pushing
- 00:22:45what was working Ralph breaks the
- 00:22:47internet was a solid sequel that was
- 00:22:48loved by fans and critics also turned to
- 00:22:51decent profit Frozen 2 was bound to be a
- 00:22:53Smash Hit and ended up being bigger than
- 00:22:54they probably imagined 1.4 billion
- 00:22:57dollars in the box office the second
- 00:22:59highest grossing animated film of all
- 00:23:01time hopefully this was enough profit to
- 00:23:02handle all the loss they were about to
- 00:23:04take in the 2020s Ryan The Last Dragon
- 00:23:06flop and Kanto had an okay box office
- 00:23:09performance but got more popular once it
- 00:23:11was added to the Disney plus streaming
- 00:23:12service strange world was a massive box
- 00:23:15office failure and had yet another LGB Q
- 00:23:17controversy the main character Ethan
- 00:23:20clade is an openly gay teenager whose
- 00:23:22crush is the male character diazzo this
- 00:23:24is the first Disney film with an openly
- 00:23:26gay lead character teachers in Florida
- 00:23:28were being investigated for showing this
- 00:23:30film to their students opposers think
- 00:23:32that Disney animations is failing
- 00:23:34because they choose not to write an
- 00:23:35interesting and meaningful storyline but
- 00:23:37rather focus on pushing an agenda to
- 00:23:39Children however the lgbtq community
- 00:23:42feels like they are finally getting
- 00:23:43deserved representation in films but
- 00:23:46Disney made their stance towards the
- 00:23:47lgbtq community very clear in March of
- 00:23:502022 when Florida legislator passed
- 00:23:53hb1557 otherwise known as the don't say
- 00:23:56gay bill this bill prohibits instruction
- 00:23:58on sexual orientation or gender identity
- 00:24:01in grades kindergarten through third
- 00:24:03grade the bill is framed around the
- 00:24:05fundamental rights of parents to make
- 00:24:07decisions regarding the upbringing and
- 00:24:09control of their children since Disney
- 00:24:11World is located in Florida they were
- 00:24:13pressured to take a stance they issued a
- 00:24:15statement Florida's hb15 five seven
- 00:24:18should have never been passed and should
- 00:24:19never have been signed into law our goal
- 00:24:22as a company is for this law to be
- 00:24:23repealed by the legislator or struck
- 00:24:25down in the courts and we remain
- 00:24:27committed to supporting the national and
- 00:24:29state organizations working to achieve
- 00:24:31that Disney did not attempt to block
- 00:24:32this law while it was in process and as
- 00:24:34far as we know have not made any
- 00:24:36progress towards getting it changed Walt
- 00:24:38Disney Studios was able to offset some
- 00:24:40of the losses from their two Animation
- 00:24:42Studios failing with live-action remakes
- 00:24:44of Classics from 2015 Disney has been on
- 00:24:47a remake tirade Cinderella The Jungle
- 00:24:49Book Alice Through the Looking Glass
- 00:24:51Beauty and the Beast Dumbo Aladdin Lady
- 00:24:53and the all of these were very
- 00:24:55safe and Solid box office successes but
- 00:24:58the biggest was none other than the Lion
- 00:25:00King earning 1.6 billion dollars making
- 00:25:02it the highest grossing animated film of
- 00:25:05all time however these safe remakes
- 00:25:08would come to a screeching halt Mulan
- 00:25:10Cruella Pinocchio Peter Pan all failed
- 00:25:13to make substantial Revenue now this
- 00:25:15could be due to the pandemic shutting
- 00:25:16down theaters and people being scared to
- 00:25:18go out in public but it's more likely
- 00:25:20that Disney fans are just exhausted from
- 00:25:22the oversaturation of old stories so
- 00:25:25they threw a curveball at a classic The
- 00:25:27Little Mermaid 2023 was a live action
- 00:25:29remake that casted Hallie Bailey as
- 00:25:32Ariel this made headlines because the
- 00:25:34original 1989 animation depicted Ariel
- 00:25:36as a white woman whereas Hallie is
- 00:25:38African-American Disney has been accused
- 00:25:40of whitewashing their characters for
- 00:25:42years but we don't often see them
- 00:25:43totally change the race of one of their
- 00:25:45main characters critics accused Disney
- 00:25:47of blatantly pandering trying to change
- 00:25:49something that was a non-issue in the
- 00:25:50first place however Defenders pointed
- 00:25:52out that mermaids don't have a race
- 00:25:54because they are not real and Disney has
- 00:25:56had very few black lead characters over
- 00:25:58the years some people in the middle
- 00:26:00thought that the lead just didn't look
- 00:26:01like Ariel specifically because her hair
- 00:26:03is orange and not red normally these
- 00:26:05controversies lead to failure but fans
- 00:26:07and critics seem to like this movie and
- 00:26:09it made a nice profit however their
- 00:26:11upcoming Snow White remake has easily
- 00:26:13received the most controversy out of
- 00:26:14them all and it hasn't even come out yet
- 00:26:16it all started with the casting of
- 00:26:18Rachel zegler a Colombian American set
- 00:26:20to play the role of Snow White this
- 00:26:22specific princess is known for having
- 00:26:23pale white skin and dark hair but
- 00:26:26Rachel's skin color is not why people
- 00:26:27are angry it's her constant reminders
- 00:26:29that she hates the original story I mean
- 00:26:32you know the original cartoon came out
- 00:26:34in 1937 and very evidently so
- 00:26:37um there is a big focus on her love
- 00:26:40story
- 00:26:41um with a guy who literally stalks her
- 00:26:43yeah weird weird the cartoon was made 85
- 00:26:47years ago and therefore it's extremely
- 00:26:51dated when it comes to the ideas of
- 00:26:54women being in rules of power I just
- 00:26:56mean that it's no longer 1937. I was
- 00:26:59scared of the original cartoon I think I
- 00:27:01watched it once and then I never picked
- 00:27:03it up again even people who are
- 00:27:04extremely for Disney reshaping and
- 00:27:06modifying their Classics to fit a modern
- 00:27:07society think Rachel is annoying
- 00:27:09entitled and disrespectful and on top of
- 00:27:12that she doesn't think she's being paid
- 00:27:13enough
- 00:27:14in there are 18 hours in address of an
- 00:27:17iconic Disney princess I deserve to be
- 00:27:19paid for every hour that it is streamed
- 00:27:21online she's like everything people hate
- 00:27:22about this generation distilled into a
- 00:27:24single person there have been rumors
- 00:27:26that Disney plans on axing this film due
- 00:27:28to the controversy if that becomes true
- 00:27:29it would forever change the way they
- 00:27:31cast their lead characters if they don't
- 00:27:33ax the film it sends the message to
- 00:27:35Future leads that you can disrespect the
- 00:27:37legacy of Disney insert your unwanted
- 00:27:39opinions all while elevating your Fame
- 00:27:41and getting paid millions of dollars
- 00:27:43Marvel has not been able to escape this
- 00:27:45downfall either aside from Spider-Man
- 00:27:46and Black Panther who were certified
- 00:27:48billion dollar hits their rollout of new
- 00:27:50films have been catastrophic the New
- 00:27:52Mutants the king's man morbius eternals
- 00:27:55which was their first openly gay
- 00:27:57superhero all bombed at the box office
- 00:27:59this is especially bad when you consider
- 00:28:01these movies have 200 million dollar
- 00:28:03budgets their new TV series She-Hulk
- 00:28:05Wanda Vision Miss Marvel and secret
- 00:28:07Invasion are not drawing much excitement
- 00:28:09from fans either and rumors are
- 00:28:11circulating that some of these TV
- 00:28:12episodes are costing upwards of 25 5
- 00:28:14million dollars to make in an effort to
- 00:28:16cut costs they aren't shrinking budgets
- 00:28:18and writing better stories they're just
- 00:28:20laying off hard-working people Bob Iger
- 00:28:22announced his plan to reduce costs by
- 00:28:245.5 billion which included reducing the
- 00:28:26workforce by 7 000 employees one of
- 00:28:29these employees was Marvel executive Ike
- 00:28:32Perlmutter who was The Man Who Sold
- 00:28:34Marvel to Disney 15 years ago Disney has
- 00:28:36bought extremely valuable IP from
- 00:28:38culturally significant Studios rinsed
- 00:28:41every dollar they could out of them and
- 00:28:43reshaped the narratives to tell a more
- 00:28:44modern and socially acceptable story but
- 00:28:47they are now in panic mode it's not
- 00:28:49working anymore they have lost 900
- 00:28:51million dollars in their last eight
- 00:28:52releases and just a week ago their stock
- 00:28:54price hit a nine-year low when it fell
- 00:28:56below 84 dollars in 2023 so if going
- 00:28:59woke is clearly pissing off fans and
- 00:29:01dragging their financials into the mud
- 00:29:03why are they doing it is it because they
- 00:29:05genuinely care about inclusion and
- 00:29:06making people of all kinds feel
- 00:29:08comfortable and happy well when you
- 00:29:09learn about the corporate equality index
- 00:29:11you might think differently as to why
- 00:29:13companies are all of a sudden being so
- 00:29:15forward with their political ideologies
- 00:29:17for the 16th year in a row Disney
- 00:29:19received a score of 100 on the Human
- 00:29:21Rights Campaign foundation's corporate
- 00:29:23equality index the CEI score is
- 00:29:26administered by the Human Rights
- 00:29:27Campaign the largest lgbtq political
- 00:29:30lobbying organization in the U.S this
- 00:29:33score is given to companies that meet
- 00:29:34certain criteria such as Workforce
- 00:29:36protections inclusive benefits
- 00:29:38supporting an inclusive culture and the
- 00:29:40big one being Corporate social
- 00:29:41responsibility CSR is the one we will
- 00:29:44notice the most because of the rules
- 00:29:46that must be followed to earn a full
- 00:29:47score in this area marketing or
- 00:29:50advertising in lgbtq consumers
- 00:29:52advertising with lgbtq plus content
- 00:29:55advertising in lgbtq Media or sponsoring
- 00:29:58lgbtq organizations and events and
- 00:30:01demonstrated public support for lgbtq
- 00:30:04plus equality under the law through
- 00:30:06local state and federal legislation or
- 00:30:08initiatives companies are rewarded with
- 00:30:10essentially a social credit score based
- 00:30:12on how inclusive they are and investors
- 00:30:15often consider a company CEI score as an
- 00:30:17indicator of potential future backlash
- 00:30:19over human rights violations or other
- 00:30:21controversies a high CEI score can
- 00:30:24reassure investors that the company is a
- 00:30:26relatively safe bet if you do not comply
- 00:30:28with the hrc's guidelines and receive a
- 00:30:30low CEI score then investment firms that
- 00:30:33control trillions of dollars such as
- 00:30:34BlackRock will actively avoid investing
- 00:30:37in your company this situation becomes
- 00:30:39particularly concerning when viewed
- 00:30:40through the lens of potential blackmail
- 00:30:41if a company fails to meet hrc's
- 00:30:43criteria the HRC can exert pressure on
- 00:30:46investors these investors in turn can
- 00:30:48influence the company's board creating a
- 00:30:50chain of external pressures if they
- 00:30:52learn that a company is now complying
- 00:30:53with the hrc's lgbtq criteria they have
- 00:30:56the power to contact advertising
- 00:30:58agencies and encourage them to no longer
- 00:30:59do business with these companies this
- 00:31:01could result in a significant loss of
- 00:31:03income for a non-compliant company
- 00:31:04adding another layer of complexity
- 00:31:06companies that do adhere to the CEI
- 00:31:08criteria may also be penalized if they
- 00:31:10engage in business with companies that
- 00:31:12do not in some cases even the company
- 00:31:14that are making an effort to meet the
- 00:31:16CEI standards could see their scores
- 00:31:18negatively affected very powerful
- 00:31:20billionaires are very much against
- 00:31:21conservative values strong family bonds
- 00:31:24frugality and modesty contradict the
- 00:31:26consumerist mindset by influencing a
- 00:31:28younger generation to distance
- 00:31:29themselves from these Traditional Values
- 00:31:31these Cutthroat businessmen aim to shape
- 00:31:34a future consumer base that generates
- 00:31:36more profits than ever before however
- 00:31:38not every company is successful in
- 00:31:39trying to achieve a higher score for
- 00:31:41instance companies like Bud Light have
- 00:31:43faced controversies that led to
- 00:31:44significant financial losses the biggest
- 00:31:46problem with this score is that you'll
- 00:31:48never know the difference between an
- 00:31:49actually Progressive inclusive company
- 00:31:51and one that's just trying to get a
- 00:31:53higher score to look good for investors
- 00:31:54you have to ask yourself is Disney
- 00:31:56trying to make your life easier safer
- 00:31:58and happier or are they just trying to
- 00:32:00prevent investors from getting scared
- 00:32:02and pulling out the truth is Disney has
- 00:32:05always faced backlash and they always
- 00:32:07will you can type in literally any
- 00:32:09Disney film the word controversy after
- 00:32:11it and you will find an article of
- 00:32:12someone pinpointing a small detail of
- 00:32:14using them of being racist whitewashing
- 00:32:16too gay not gay enough there will always
- 00:32:18be someone angry after dragging three
- 00:32:20iconic Studios into the dirt and
- 00:32:22squeezing out every last penny they can
- 00:32:24it seems like the one thing they haven't
- 00:32:26tried in two decades is use their
- 00:32:28endless amount of dollars and
- 00:32:29connections to build a super team and
- 00:32:31write a good story
