- 00:01:57will you can we're cheering we're
- 00:01:58watching that and we were we were super
- 00:02:00excited you know just let's bring us
- 00:02:02back there because that will lead us
- 00:02:03into what we're talking about today
- 00:02:05because that's it's the Mamba mentality
- 00:02:06that last game came out of nowhere man
- 00:02:10yeah pretty much you know it it's uh for
- 00:02:14me it was just like the end of a really
- 00:02:16um long beautiful Journey you know I
- 00:02:18started playing a b game of basketball
- 00:02:20since I was two right and so for this to
- 00:02:22be the moment this is the last game for
- 00:02:25me to come out and perform in front of
- 00:02:26my fans in front of my home crowd in
- 00:02:28front of my family um
- 00:02:30it it was really exciting you know it
- 00:02:32wasn't any pressure wasn't sad or
- 00:02:34anything like that it was like this is
- 00:02:36awesome you know let's go out here and
- 00:02:38put on a show one more time you've been
- 00:02:40doing this for 20 years I'm sure you
- 00:02:41don't get nervous were you nervous
- 00:02:43before this game no I wasn't nervous I I
- 00:02:45was I was excited like I was ready to go
- 00:02:48you know I was ready to go and you know
- 00:02:49I saw my family right before we ran out
- 00:02:52in the court and uh you know looked at
- 00:02:55my wife and our kids and I just asked my
- 00:02:57kids I say let's go put on the show One
- 00:02:59More Time time is that okay they said
- 00:03:01yeah so went out and put on the show so
- 00:03:03it was fun it wasn't was any nervousness
- 00:03:05or anything like that first shot didn't
- 00:03:07go in second shot didn't go in third
- 00:03:09shot didn't go in fourth fifth and sixth
- 00:03:11and then all of a sudden buckets yeah
- 00:03:14well boom boom boom boom boom well I
- 00:03:16mean it makes it it makes the journey
- 00:03:18worthwhile you know what I mean because
- 00:03:19you go through moments where you have
- 00:03:20that adversity and you got to figure
- 00:03:22your way through it so like the start of
- 00:03:23the game I actually had to just start
- 00:03:25laughing at myself after a while like
- 00:03:27after I missed like the fifth shot in a
- 00:03:28row so this is pretty funny this game
- 00:03:31can either be like I can either turn it
- 00:03:33around or is this going to be absolutely
- 00:03:35horrendous be the worst last game ever
- 00:03:38so you know from that point I said I'm
- 00:03:40comfortable it's either going to be the
- 00:03:42worst last game ever it's going to be
- 00:03:43the best last game ever but I don't want
- 00:03:45anything in between so that that leads
- 00:03:47me to to ask because that last game
- 00:03:50you've been doing something you've been
- 00:03:51doing since you were four five years old
- 00:03:54it's not about the physical because
- 00:03:55you've done this a million times you've
- 00:03:57practiced the left hand pull up
- 00:03:59mid-range the right hand pull up
- 00:04:00mid-range the step back the pivot the
- 00:04:02reverse pivot you know going at
- 00:04:04attacking different angles you've been
- 00:04:05doing that so it's not about
- 00:04:06physicalness because that's all
- 00:04:08ingrained was that last game fully just
- 00:04:10mental just fighting through it and just
- 00:04:12say look I got I got to do this and yeah
- 00:04:15I it was no cuz I was I was ready to
- 00:04:17play I was excited to play you know once
- 00:04:19the game started it became became the
- 00:04:22norm you know it became reading
- 00:04:24defensive
- 00:04:25situations um you know positioning of my
- 00:04:28teammates and you know just overall
- 00:04:30strategy and tactics and it felt good to
- 00:04:32get back to that you know because that's
- 00:04:34the part of the game that I enjoy the
- 00:04:36most the mindfulness of that game yeah
- 00:04:38the fun of it's like a puzzle you have
- 00:04:40to figure out what pieces go where and
- 00:04:42and that's the enjoyment in the game I
- 00:04:46think that's what we're we're leading
- 00:04:47here today in our tedex talk is uh uh
- 00:04:49the power of the mind and I think uh
- 00:04:52because you know there's been so many
- 00:04:53athletes that have made the NBA the
- 00:04:56highest Echelon of of professional
- 00:04:58basketball in the world and uh there's
- 00:04:59athletes that can jump as high as the
- 00:05:02sky run as fast as you know a cheetah um
- 00:05:05they get hit buckets they can they can
- 00:05:06react but it's the it's the special
- 00:05:09niche of players that have that
- 00:05:11mindfulness that have that attacking
- 00:05:12mode that Relentless mode that mode
- 00:05:15where they go ice cold last few minutes
- 00:05:17you know I think I think that makes a
- 00:05:19difference between the great ones and
- 00:05:21the greatest ones right yeah you know
- 00:05:24it's it's funny like it's to me the
- 00:05:26mentality is a really simple one in a
- 00:05:29sense that the confidence comes from
- 00:05:32preparation you know so when the game's
- 00:05:34on the line I'm not asking myself to do
- 00:05:36something that I haven't done thousands
- 00:05:37of times before right so when I prepare
- 00:05:41I know what I'm capable of doing I know
- 00:05:43what I'm comfortable doing and I know
- 00:05:44what I'm not comfortable doing you right
- 00:05:47and so in those moments if it looks like
- 00:05:48I'm ice cold or not nervous it's because
- 00:05:52I've done it thousands of times before
- 00:05:54so it's one more
- 00:05:55time so that leads me to talk about a
- 00:05:58lot of uh this Kobe tour this year in
- 00:06:00Asia is we we reiterate the Mamba
- 00:06:03mentality you know can you talk a little
- 00:06:06bit about what the Mamba mentality is
- 00:06:08because that's something that's been
- 00:06:09developing over not I don't want to say
- 00:06:1220 years it's been developing for 35
- 00:06:15years since you were a little kid that
- 00:06:17Mamba mentality because you didn't start
- 00:06:19working when you got to the NBA you
- 00:06:20started working when you were at Laura
- 00:06:22Maran when you were in Italy when you
- 00:06:23were five when you're playing Nerf Nerf
- 00:06:25basketball right so talk about talk
- 00:06:27about the development of the mamba
- 00:06:29mentality uh the pillars the five
- 00:06:31pillars of this mama mentality and then
- 00:06:33we'll kind of break it down well I mean
- 00:06:35I overall you know the idea is a very
- 00:06:37simple one and you know the mama
- 00:06:39mentality simply means trying to be the
- 00:06:42best version of yourself that's what the
- 00:06:45mentality means it means every day you
- 00:06:48know you're trying to become better and
- 00:06:50it's a constant Quest it's an infinite
- 00:06:52Quest so starting at the age of two when
- 00:06:54I first started playing the game and on
- 00:06:56and on and on I always ask questions I
- 00:06:59always tried to get better every single
- 00:07:01day learn more learn more you asking
- 00:07:02questions that too oh dude I was asking
- 00:07:04questions all the time you'd be
- 00:07:06surprised like some people like my kids
- 00:07:08at two could do a lot of things M right
- 00:07:10at two I could dribble a basketball I
- 00:07:12could shoot a basketball on a Nerf hoop
- 00:07:14at the house and I would go to practice
- 00:07:16with my father I would observe my father
- 00:07:19um I'd sit and watch games with him and
- 00:07:21so was he your first coach um yeah man I
- 00:07:24guess you could say that you know a lot
- 00:07:25of things I learned by being just being
- 00:07:27around the game right so by the age of
- 00:07:29six I was already strategizing versus
- 00:07:32other six-year-olds you know the age of
- 00:07:35six I figured out six-year-olds couldn't
- 00:07:36dribble with their left hand and so I
- 00:07:39said okay a lot of a lot of 12y olds
- 00:07:40can't dribble with their life yeah would
- 00:07:41imagine six so like when I was playing
- 00:07:43these six-year-old kids I would make
- 00:07:45them dribble with their left because I
- 00:07:46knew they couldn't and so they dribbled
- 00:07:49off their foot I'd pick it up Lay It Up
- 00:07:52do it again dribble off foot pick it up
- 00:07:53laid up so at 6 years old I had 63
- 00:07:56points
- 00:07:58and and uh I remember my day so your six
- 00:08:01six-year-old self could beat your
- 00:08:0338-year old self because you only scored
- 00:08:0460 in the last game yeah no but I can
- 00:08:06dribble with my left though so that's a
- 00:08:08problem but um but yeah I mean listen I
- 00:08:11I just constantly looked for things to
- 00:08:14learn from and um you know very
- 00:08:16observant okay so when we talk about the
- 00:08:19mama mentality uh you have your
- 00:08:21exhibition today starting in Shanghai
- 00:08:22right um also we've been talking about
- 00:08:25this whole tour with young kids uh that
- 00:08:28are 5 10 15 20 we've been we just did a
- 00:08:31Kobe Academy right now we talk about
- 00:08:33being passionate being obsessive being
- 00:08:36relentless being resilient and being
- 00:08:39Fearless these are the five pillars of
- 00:08:42the mamb mentality so we'll kind of
- 00:08:43break that down today sure the first one
- 00:08:45is is to be passionate you know what
- 00:08:47what is that uh is there is there a is
- 00:08:50there a moment where you can Define your
- 00:08:51passion for the game or was it just
- 00:08:53something accumulated over time well I
- 00:08:55mean you know the passion came from the
- 00:08:57love for the game you know I loved
- 00:08:59everything everything about it like the
- 00:09:00smell of the ball you love the smell of
- 00:09:02the ball yes the ball you know the smell
- 00:09:04of like brand new sneakers and like the
- 00:09:06sound the ball makes when it hits the
- 00:09:08ground sneakers in the gym s yeah the
- 00:09:11ball going through the net like all
- 00:09:12those things I I love and so the passion
- 00:09:15comes from that because once you have
- 00:09:17that love you just want to be a part of
- 00:09:19this thing all the
- 00:09:21time when you when you talk about this
- 00:09:23love when does it develop were you did
- 00:09:26you like it when you were five or is it
- 00:09:28something that kind of
- 00:09:30two I was born and I was born to play
- 00:09:32basketball you know what I mean and I
- 00:09:34played a lot of different sports um but
- 00:09:36nothing brought me the sense of of of
- 00:09:40peace and of uh Escape you know that the
- 00:09:43game of basketball do is it an escape
- 00:09:46when you get on the court is that your
- 00:09:47Zen time your your your Solitude time
- 00:09:50even though it's a teamwork game yeah
- 00:09:51when I need that escape it's there for
- 00:09:52me right when I need a friend it's there
- 00:09:54for me you know when I need the vent and
- 00:09:57D dunk and the Mama comes out it's there
- 00:09:59so it's yeah the game is absolutely
- 00:10:01everything for me mhm when when you when
- 00:10:04we talk about trying to get kids to be
- 00:10:07passionate I don't think every kid I
- 00:10:10don't think your situation is the norm
- 00:10:12not every kid is knows their passionate
- 00:10:14at two or five right how do kids find
- 00:10:17that passion then well I I think as
- 00:10:20parents you you you embraced it right
- 00:10:22away too I mean I think as parents we
- 00:10:24try to put them in different things try
- 00:10:26to expose them to as many things as
- 00:10:27possible and then see if there's one
- 00:10:30thing that connects with them you know
- 00:10:31because if it does you don't have to
- 00:10:33tell them to do it you whether it's
- 00:10:35writing or painting or drawing you know
- 00:10:38if they have that passion you don't have
- 00:10:40to tell them they'll go off and do it
- 00:10:41because it's just fun they'd rather do
- 00:10:43that than anything else so but as
- 00:10:45parents it's our job to just expose them
- 00:10:47to as many things as possible and see
- 00:10:48which one they gravitate to the most
- 00:10:51yeah it's interesting because you you
- 00:10:52talk about kids right originally we were
- 00:10:54talking about you now you're talking
- 00:10:55about your kids and their passions do
- 00:10:57you do you kind of feel that passion for
- 00:10:59them and and say hey let's go play some
- 00:11:01basketball or volleyball or let's go
- 00:11:03swimming yeah we we expose them to all
- 00:11:05kinds of I mean they play a lot of
- 00:11:06different sports they do a lot of things
- 00:11:07creatively you know writing and things
- 00:11:09like that and designing and um you just
- 00:11:12sit back and you just watch which one
- 00:11:13they move to and then it's our
- 00:11:15responsibility as parents to try to set
- 00:11:17them up for success as much as we
- 00:11:19possibly can do you want them to play
- 00:11:20basketball I want them to find whatever
- 00:11:22it is that they're passionate about like
- 00:11:24whatever they feel like their purpose is
- 00:11:26then that's what I want them to do do
- 00:11:27they love basketball though your girls
- 00:11:28um so my my youngest one um she does she
- 00:11:32wants to she wants to play and she wants
- 00:11:34me to teach her how to play this summer
- 00:11:35and you know our eldest is really into
- 00:11:37volleyball uhuh so and um but we'll see
- 00:11:40you know passions tend to change so
- 00:11:42you're going to get into volleyball now
- 00:11:44well yeah I mean yeah my sister was a
- 00:11:46great volleyball player so we have a
- 00:11:48teacher in the family is there is there
- 00:11:50one moment where you can say it Define
- 00:11:53your passion for basketball is there a
- 00:11:55story or moment when you said D that was
- 00:11:57that was it that was like when I felt
- 00:11:58really pass
- 00:11:59passate no it doesn't it never leaves it
- 00:12:03never leaves like I you know the game is
- 00:12:06just a part of me um so it never leaves
- 00:12:09even now that I'm retired you know
- 00:12:11everything that I've learned from the
- 00:12:12game of basketball I've carried it over
- 00:12:14into life you know like basketball's
- 00:12:16help me be a better person a better
- 00:12:18friend a better father well because
- 00:12:20there's life lessons that are within the
- 00:12:21game like communication like
- 00:12:24unselfishness um like attention to
- 00:12:26detail and um empathy compassion like
- 00:12:29all those things are in the game and uh
- 00:12:33as an athlete if we are aware of those
- 00:12:35things um it helps us become better
- 00:12:38human human beings and you can apply
- 00:12:40that toward your post post basketball
- 00:12:44days retirement into your business World
- 00:12:47future Ventures sure I mean you can
- 00:12:48apply you know I was applying that um
- 00:12:51even while I was playing just in life
- 00:12:53outside of the game and even more so now
- 00:12:55you know in building a business and all
- 00:12:57these things you you know kind culture
- 00:12:59you want to have um you know all those
- 00:13:01things are are um directly learned from
- 00:13:06the game of basketball for me uh next up
- 00:13:09is uh the next pillar be
- 00:13:11obsessive obsessive that's I think uh I
- 00:13:14think a lot of people equate that with
- 00:13:16you you know Kobe is obsessive in a lot
- 00:13:18of things uh we've been doing this for
- 00:13:20what eight years now Asia tour you know
- 00:13:23I've been with you for a long way I I
- 00:13:26the one moment that stands out out of
- 00:13:28we've done I don't know how how many
- 00:13:29done we've done what 800 events M the
- 00:13:31one time was 4:00 a.m. we went out to
- 00:13:34practice at 4 a.m. and that was your
- 00:13:37idea to do it and then you know all
- 00:13:39these Nike people are like no no no no
- 00:13:41let's not let's not do that and then
- 00:13:42you're like let's do it at 4:00 a.m. so
- 00:13:44you got security you got brand marketing
- 00:13:45Sports Marketing going no no no no no no
- 00:13:47no let's not do it you're like let's do
- 00:13:48it because that's your assess this right
- 00:13:51I mean to me it just makes complete
- 00:13:53sense not to us but I don't like okay so
- 00:13:57see we all right what you us
- 00:13:59I'm sleeping at 4:00 a.m. you're you're
- 00:14:02working out so talk about that okay so
- 00:14:04if if if your job is to try to be the
- 00:14:07best basketball player you can be right
- 00:14:10to do that you have to practice you have
- 00:14:11to train right you want to train as much
- 00:14:13as you can as often as you can so if you
- 00:14:17get up at 10:00 in the morning train at
- 00:14:1911: right 12 say 12 train at 12 train
- 00:14:22for 2 hours 12: to 2 um you have to let
- 00:14:25your body recover so you eat recover
- 00:14:27whatever you get back out you train
- 00:14:29start training again at 6 train from
- 00:14:316:00 to 8 right and now you go home you
- 00:14:34shower you eat dinner you go to bed you
- 00:14:36wake up you do it again right those are
- 00:14:37two sessions right now imagine you wake
- 00:14:39up at 3:00 you train at 4:00 you go 4:
- 00:14:41to 6 come home breakfast relax so so now
- 00:14:45you're back at it again 9 to 11 right
- 00:14:48you relax and now all of a sudden you're
- 00:14:49back at it again two to 4 and now you're
- 00:14:52back at it again you know seven to nine
- 00:14:55look how much more training I have done
- 00:14:57by simply starting at 4
- 00:14:59right so now you do that and as the
- 00:15:01years go on the separation that you have
- 00:15:05with your competitors and your peers
- 00:15:07just grows larger and larger and larger
- 00:15:09and larger and larger and by year five
- 00:15:11or six doesn't matter H what kind of
- 00:15:13work they do in the summer they're never
- 00:15:15going to catch up because they're five
- 00:15:17years
- 00:15:18behind right so it makes sense to get up
- 00:15:20and start your day early because you can
- 00:15:22get more working is that genetic or is
- 00:15:25that something you you ingrained and
- 00:15:26trained yourself no it was who taught
- 00:15:28you that for me it was just it was just
- 00:15:29common sense like I can I can if I start
- 00:15:31earlier I can train more hours and I
- 00:15:33know the other guys aren't doing it
- 00:15:35because I know what their training
- 00:15:36schedule is right so I know if I do this
- 00:15:39consistently over time it's the gap's
- 00:15:42just going to widen and widen and widen
- 00:15:43and widen and widen and they won't be
- 00:15:45able to get that back MH so to me it was
- 00:15:47just common sense and like thinking how
- 00:15:49can I get an advantage oh start earlier
- 00:15:51yeah let's do that when did you start
- 00:15:52doing
- 00:15:54that man high school high school weart
- 00:15:58my first class in high school was 7 at
- 00:16:017:45 I used to get to the gym around
- 00:16:035:00 a.m. and I'd play before school mhm
- 00:16:06and then school would start who's
- 00:16:07playing with you at 5:00 a.m. my coach
- 00:16:09so my coach would show up and we do all
- 00:16:10these basketball drills right so just
- 00:16:13you and your coach just me and my coach
- 00:16:14and sometimes it would just be me and
- 00:16:15the janitor and who's still there today
- 00:16:18and um and um and then I play at lunch
- 00:16:22time that gu should get a medal I I
- 00:16:24hooked him up with a few things um but I
- 00:16:27played doing lunch and and then then
- 00:16:29practice after and then you go home do
- 00:16:31my school workor and then watch a bunch
- 00:16:33of game film and games on TV and study
- 00:16:37study film was that the only thing
- 00:16:39you've been obsessed about basketball
- 00:16:41well until recently yeah until recently
- 00:16:43yeah basketball dominated you know my uh
- 00:16:46my entire life for more than 30 years
- 00:16:50when when uh when I when I brought it up
- 00:16:52like where do you is it genetic or you
- 00:16:54just learned it I mean how how did that
- 00:16:57idea even come up because that's
- 00:16:58obviously
- 00:16:59a a pillar of Mama mentality the
- 00:17:01obsessiveness this is just like you said
- 00:17:03I'm going to get up at 4 everybody's get
- 00:17:04up at 6 if everybody's going to get up
- 00:17:06at 4 I'm going to get up at two right
- 00:17:08right how do you how do you develop that
- 00:17:11or where do you where do you learn that
- 00:17:12from well I I think it's just you know
- 00:17:15it's just a matter of what's important
- 00:17:16to you what's important to you for for
- 00:17:19whatever reason you know I I felt like
- 00:17:22um I didn't feel good about myself if I
- 00:17:26wasn't doing everything I could to be
- 00:17:29the best version of myself if I felt
- 00:17:31like I left anything on the table um it
- 00:17:34would eat away at me I wouldn't be able
- 00:17:36to look myself in the mirror right so
- 00:17:39the reason why I can retire now and be
- 00:17:40completely comfortable about it because
- 00:17:42I know that I've done everything I could
- 00:17:44to be the best basketball player I could
- 00:17:46be um and so that's where it comes from
- 00:17:49for me you can't leave any stone
- 00:17:51unturned because uh you know we do all
- 00:17:53these events and um like today we just
- 00:17:55did one uh you guys weren't here we were
- 00:17:57just at the co Academy M we just had all
- 00:18:00these kids 24 best high school
- 00:18:02basketball players in China running
- 00:18:05playing basketball running five on five
- 00:18:07running all these drills and then at the
- 00:18:08end we had this little game where um all
- 00:18:11they had to do was run uh this drill
- 00:18:13called 17s 17s is really simple one
- 00:18:16minute you got to run 17 times from from
- 00:18:19uh sideline to sideline it's tough it's
- 00:18:21tough you got to run it in one minute if
- 00:18:23any of you been playing basketball in
- 00:18:24high school you know what I mean it's a
- 00:18:26killer it's all it is is just Grit it's
- 00:18:29just let's just run and then uh this kid
- 00:18:32you know we're running and this is for
- 00:18:34media we got the media on the side and
- 00:18:35and if they ran they get a pair of Kobe
- 00:18:37shoes so you know it's for fun but I
- 00:18:40warned them I warned them I said if you
- 00:18:43guys run the
- 00:18:4417 everybody gets a pair of
- 00:18:47shoes if you don't touch the line you
- 00:18:50get
- 00:18:51nothing everybody touched the line so
- 00:18:54this is where Kobe gets his
- 00:18:55obsessiveness so we're sitting there
- 00:18:56everybody's kind of happy we're thinking
- 00:18:58nah they run the lines we're going to
- 00:18:59have a presentation for the shoes the
- 00:19:01kids are running they've been running
- 00:19:02for 2 hours running running running this
- 00:19:06one kid misses the line by like half
- 00:19:10inch no it wasn't even half inch was
- 00:19:12like by that
- 00:19:14much he misses the line Kobe's like stop
- 00:19:18stop stop stop stop we had to stop we
- 00:19:19had to stop everything and he's like
- 00:19:22nobody gets shoes and all these kids are
- 00:19:25like oh they're mad at the kid they're
- 00:19:27like touch them line all you is touch
- 00:19:29the line that's it it was this much
- 00:19:31touch the line and and you know Kobe's
- 00:19:34like look nobody nobody get shoes you
- 00:19:35got to sit on the sideline and then Kobe
- 00:19:37made this kid run suicides which is
- 00:19:40another drill Baseline free throw line
- 00:19:42Baseline half court Baseline opposite
- 00:19:44free throw line Baseline Baseline and
- 00:19:47back three in a row three times you had
- 00:19:50to run three of them yeah but the best
- 00:19:52part was the best part was uh the last
- 00:19:56one Kobe ran with this kid
- 00:19:59he ran with this kid okay yeah it's
- 00:20:02awesome he ran with this kid and there's
- 00:20:05a mill 1.1 million people are watching
- 00:20:08online crazy he r with this kid this kid
- 00:20:10was dry heaving he was about to die yeah
- 00:20:13but you you lucky he didn't die no he's
- 00:20:16he wasn't going to die he wasn't going
- 00:20:17to die but but the the important thing
- 00:20:19to understand is you can't you can't
- 00:20:21short Change yourself like you're not
- 00:20:24you're not cheating anybody but yourself
- 00:20:26right I mean you're tired you're
- 00:20:27literally this far away from the line
- 00:20:29why would you not go that extra to touch
- 00:20:31the line right so if I let him get away
- 00:20:33with that right all of a sudden he
- 00:20:35starts maybe a cheat something over here
- 00:20:38right not give his best over here not
- 00:20:40give his best over here and as years go
- 00:20:42on he's going to be extremely he's not
- 00:20:44going to reach his full potential
- 00:20:46because he's been taking these little
- 00:20:47shortcuts that just add up add up add up
- 00:20:49add up add up and you can't let that
- 00:20:51happen our job as teachers as mentors as
- 00:20:54inspirers it's our responsibility to
- 00:20:57hold them accountable to those things
- 00:20:59the the funny part is uh we were we're
- 00:21:01just talking about this kid we're in the
- 00:21:03back and Kobe's like I bet you that kid
- 00:21:06will never ever miss the line again yeah
- 00:21:10it's not it's not going to happen it's
- 00:21:13not going to happen because of that one
- 00:21:14moment so that that's you being
- 00:21:16obsessive but teaching obsessiveness
- 00:21:18because that's that's where you got to
- 00:21:20be right do you you have to be obsessive
- 00:21:21to get to that level in everything you
- 00:21:23do details don't waste time do it right
- 00:21:26Perfection yeah I mean it's it's really
- 00:21:29um simple it's like whatever you're
- 00:21:30doing at that moment is what you're
- 00:21:32doing at that moment you know it's like
- 00:21:35that's where the obsessiveness is having
- 00:21:37attention to detail for the action that
- 00:21:39you are performing at the time you're
- 00:21:41performing it and if you can have that
- 00:21:43kind of focus you can't help but to have
- 00:21:45a certain level of of obsession or
- 00:21:47attention to detail moving on to the the
- 00:21:50third pillar is uh to be relentless that
- 00:21:54we know you for you know we see you on
- 00:21:56TV being relentless first quarter second
- 00:21:59quarter third quarter fourth quarter
- 00:22:01attack attack attack never letting your
- 00:22:04teammates slack off attack attack attack
- 00:22:07what how do you get that talk about what
- 00:22:09is what is the meaning of relentlessness
- 00:22:11to you well it's to never to be
- 00:22:14unyielding MH you know never give an
- 00:22:17inch to anybody like you're always going
- 00:22:20after it always going after always going
- 00:22:21after it and if there's a challenge that
- 00:22:23ensues oh good I want to see how I stack
- 00:22:25up to that so you go after you go after
- 00:22:27it and it's it's just um it it's fun
- 00:22:30it's like you get a chance to compete
- 00:22:31against um opponents and you get a
- 00:22:34chance to see where you stack up against
- 00:22:36them it's like I want to see if maybe
- 00:22:38I'm not good enough today if that that's
- 00:22:40fine I'll be good enough the next time I
- 00:22:42see you though you know and you get a
- 00:22:44chance to always measure yourself and um
- 00:22:47it's uh it's just fun to do that so I
- 00:22:50guess that's where relentlessness comes
- 00:22:51from is is it something that's also
- 00:22:54learned or ingrained or is it something
- 00:22:56you kind of learn over time um because
- 00:22:58these things that we talk about in a
- 00:22:59mama mentality uh you know for you it's
- 00:23:03second nature mhm uh it's not for a lot
- 00:23:07of people right A lot of it is is
- 00:23:09trained or it's not god-given you know I
- 00:23:12m I I had to learn it as well though
- 00:23:14because I I mean I had a year um of
- 00:23:16playing like when I played basketball in
- 00:23:18Italy I was taller than everybody else
- 00:23:20and
- 00:23:21faster um like the age of 11 and I came
- 00:23:24back to America to play basketball and
- 00:23:26it was not the same thing cuz kids were
- 00:23:28bigger stronger and so I went through a
- 00:23:30summer of playing basketball in America
- 00:23:32where I didn't score one point mhm it
- 00:23:34was one League I didn't score one point
- 00:23:36and uh it was devastating um but I had
- 00:23:39to no I'm not giving up it's not going
- 00:23:41to happen so you bounce back and you
- 00:23:43keep playing you keep practicing you
- 00:23:44keep practicing but I mean it wasn't
- 00:23:46handed to me you didn't score one point
- 00:23:48not one I mean not even a free throw and
- 00:23:50you were zero you were how old 11 11
- 00:23:53were you playing against 25 year olds no
- 00:23:54I was playing against 11 year olds no I
- 00:23:57was playing against 11y old believe wow
- 00:23:59I know I know but I was playing against
- 00:24:0011y olds and I didn't score one point
- 00:24:03and then was was that did that uh did it
- 00:24:06hurt you were you were you well yeah it
- 00:24:08was very embarrassing because you know
- 00:24:09my father was a Philadelphia basketball
- 00:24:11legend my uncle was a Philadelphia
- 00:24:13basketball legend and now here I am this
- 00:24:15kid like these really big knee pads and
- 00:24:17I'm walking around and I can't score
- 00:24:20anything so I was like really
- 00:24:23embarrassing that drove you of course it
- 00:24:25did of course it did and I vowed to be
- 00:24:27much much better so you live for those
- 00:24:29moments where you're embarrassed when
- 00:24:31you're down people kick you don't let
- 00:24:33you score those are the moments that
- 00:24:34drive you well I mean those are the
- 00:24:35moments that occur right so whatever
- 00:24:37moments occur good bad or indifferent I
- 00:24:40can use those moments to propel me
- 00:24:42forward use those as fuel to um help me
- 00:24:46be a better player is there a moment in
- 00:24:47your NBA career where you felt like you
- 00:24:50you you didn't hit that Mark and that
- 00:24:52was a huge transition for you yeah I
- 00:24:55always felt like I missed marks um in
- 00:24:58League um what were some of the down
- 00:25:01moments for you in basketball well
- 00:25:02losing to the Celtics in the finals in
- 00:25:042008 I mean that was tough that hurt me
- 00:25:06too yeah I mean it was it was brutal and
- 00:25:08I remember at night in the hotel room um
- 00:25:11after we lost just thinking to myself I
- 00:25:13may never win another championship like
- 00:25:15I might have just like this is it it's
- 00:25:18too hard to get back here maybe it's not
- 00:25:20in the cars to win another one and so I
- 00:25:23go through that night of being mad then
- 00:25:24the next morning I wake up and I start
- 00:25:27thinking nah I got to fix this so where
- 00:25:30did it go wrong you know why did we lose
- 00:25:33right we weren't Tough Enough okay we
- 00:25:34weren't Tough Enough whose
- 00:25:35responsibility is that to make the team
- 00:25:37tough it's mine all right so now I have
- 00:25:39to start figuring out how I'm going to
- 00:25:41lead this team differently so to make
- 00:25:43sure that when we get to the finals the
- 00:25:44next time we're tough and ready for this
- 00:25:47Challenge and um you know that's uh
- 00:25:50that's how you bounce back from those
- 00:25:51moments that was 2008 2008 2008 against
- 00:25:55the Celtics and I mean all of Laker
- 00:25:57Nation was hurt because especially
- 00:25:59because it was against the Celtics right
- 00:26:01it was painful Celtics you can't L
- 00:26:03Celtics come on God Celtics oh
- 00:26:07yeah because also that was their that
- 00:26:10was their like 17th right yeah for their
- 00:26:12for their organization and the Lakers
- 00:26:14I'm to talk about that
- 00:26:16yeah and then you bounced back the next
- 00:26:18year against uh Orlando Orlando Orlando
- 00:26:21and then got our revenge against the
- 00:26:22Celtics in 2010 did did beating the
- 00:26:25Celtics feel better than beating Orlando
- 00:26:28oh oh
- 00:26:29yeah oh yeah yes yeah yeah oh yeah I
- 00:26:32mean I grew up such a Lakers fan and so
- 00:26:34like the Lakers and Celtics rid ha
- 00:26:36everything yeah like we can't there's no
- 00:26:39way I can be on a team on a Lakers team
- 00:26:41that loses to the Celtics
- 00:26:44twice no you know it's a funny thing
- 00:26:46because um in in Asia me being here in
- 00:26:49Asia too a lot of a lot of fans are fans
- 00:26:52of a
- 00:26:53player and they they love that player
- 00:26:56and subsequently they they love that
- 00:26:58team that that player plays for but
- 00:27:00growing up in the states if you grew up
- 00:27:03in Philly you were a Sixers fan right
- 00:27:06and then if you grew up in La you were a
- 00:27:07Lakers fan right you were also a Dodgers
- 00:27:09fan and at the time you were a Rams fan
- 00:27:12you you affiliated with your city right
- 00:27:14and then the city that you hated was
- 00:27:16your arch enemy so you if you're a Laker
- 00:27:19fan you just hate the Celtics and you
- 00:27:21hate every team yeah every team that
- 00:27:24that loses to you root for every team
- 00:27:26against the Celtics no question yeah the
- 00:27:28enemy of my enemy is my friend you just
- 00:27:30want to see them do bad yeah just do bad
- 00:27:32and then if you if you are a Dodger fan
- 00:27:33you just want to see the Giants lose
- 00:27:35right so it's not necessarily Good Karma
- 00:27:37but yeah it's not but but that when you
- 00:27:39lost to the Celtics and you beat him
- 00:27:41again that moment that that's Relentless
- 00:27:43because you come back coming back coming
- 00:27:45back and you you had to come back and
- 00:27:47beat them on their Court can't give up
- 00:27:49and then is there is was that a was that
- 00:27:51a big moment for you beating beating the
- 00:27:53Celtics it was huge you know because you
- 00:27:56know we seen I've seen us as a team grow
- 00:27:59so much from 2008 you know pal Lamar you
- 00:28:03know all our guys like how much we have
- 00:28:05grown since the last time we faced this
- 00:28:08team and uh I you I couldn't be any more
- 00:28:11proud of them you know it wasn't even
- 00:28:14about me it was about sitting back and
- 00:28:15watching us as a group and we just
- 00:28:17accomplished this amazing thing and uh
- 00:28:20now we can all enjoy it together so
- 00:28:23moving on to the next pillar is to be
- 00:28:26resilient um I remember this time last
- 00:28:29year you came and uh we did a premiere
- 00:28:31for uh a movie you did Muse and a big a
- 00:28:35big part of that movie was talking about
- 00:28:38your injury and coming back to be
- 00:28:40resilient uh take us back to that day
- 00:28:42against uh Phoenix right when you
- 00:28:44injured your Achilles it Golden State it
- 00:28:46was it was it was hard man it because
- 00:28:48the Achilles injury is is the worst
- 00:28:51injury for an athlete it's like the
- 00:28:53worst it's like the the kiss of death
- 00:28:56and when I ruptured my k
- 00:28:58I I knew what happened I knew the
- 00:29:00severity of the injury and I didn't know
- 00:29:02if I was going to come back from it yeah
- 00:29:04in the locker room you were crying yeah
- 00:29:06I me I didn't like this is it like my
- 00:29:08career could be over right now so how do
- 00:29:10you get back from that because you know
- 00:29:12when you talk about injuries you know
- 00:29:14people sprain their ankles dislocate
- 00:29:16your fingers but Achilles yeah you don't
- 00:29:19people don't come back from that well
- 00:29:20athletes don't come back from that to
- 00:29:23the level they were before yeah how how
- 00:29:25is to how do you get that resilience how
- 00:29:27do you fight that well what I did is you
- 00:29:30know I went home and I was just really
- 00:29:31angry and um Angry I was angry I was mad
- 00:29:35I was angry I worked so hard for us to
- 00:29:37get to the playoffs and to have a chance
- 00:29:39to win another championship and then
- 00:29:40this happened so I had a lot of anger
- 00:29:42and uh then from the anger then I was
- 00:29:44sad and then you start feeling bad for
- 00:29:47yourself and then you say all right okay
- 00:29:50I'm done being a baby okay what am I
- 00:29:53going to do now because I can't sit here
- 00:29:56and give up that's not an option so now
- 00:29:58what how long was this cycle from this
- 00:30:00anger this one night one night this is
- 00:30:02one night it's one night it was like
- 00:30:04because you you started writing in the
- 00:30:05middle of the night right you wrote that
- 00:30:07uh you you you wrote that then it was
- 00:30:10okay what are we gonna
- 00:30:11do so yeah it was one night um but then
- 00:30:14you know then you start it's a process
- 00:30:16you look at process what am I going to
- 00:30:18do what can I control surgery we'll do
- 00:30:21the surgery come out of the surgery
- 00:30:24recover from there Physical Therapy okay
- 00:30:27physical therapy piece by piece by piece
- 00:30:29by piece by piece start running back on
- 00:30:31the court so I broke things down into
- 00:30:34sections and said okay I'm going to
- 00:30:36focus on resting right now this is it
- 00:30:39I'm going to focus on moving my toes and
- 00:30:41then walking and then so you look at
- 00:30:44every challenge at every step and uh
- 00:30:47that's how you're able to be resilient
- 00:30:49and come back from these things because
- 00:30:52uh you know for your field in uh in
- 00:30:55sports injuries often happen
- 00:30:58right and to come back but you know for
- 00:31:01for most Everyday People it's it's
- 00:31:03something that they can't fathom because
- 00:31:05they don't they don't have that type of
- 00:31:07res resistance that they have to face
- 00:31:09right so how do they how do they come
- 00:31:11back from it because sometimes people
- 00:31:13fail in their fields and their jobs or
- 00:31:15at school young kids you know you don't
- 00:31:17have a good test score you don't make
- 00:31:18the basketball team or you know they
- 00:31:19have these disappointments how do they
- 00:31:21how what is your advice to young kids to
- 00:31:23you know to to face the face this
- 00:31:26adversity how do you persevere well I
- 00:31:29like if you because you you have that
- 00:31:31chemical makeup to fight through it yeah
- 00:31:33not all kids do but but you you every
- 00:31:37kid every person has the ability to put
- 00:31:39one foot in front of the other one step
- 00:31:40at a time right so like if you're saying
- 00:31:42okay I'm going to climb Mount Everest
- 00:31:44you're at the bottom of the mountain and
- 00:31:46you look up and you're going I'm not
- 00:31:47going to CL Mount Everest right but if
- 00:31:50you break it down into sections and you
- 00:31:52just one foot in front of the other one
- 00:31:54step at a time next thing you know
- 00:31:56you're at the top of the mountain so the
- 00:31:59the the map the the plan is to set
- 00:32:03short-term goals yeah and to get there a
- 00:32:06to B B to C C to d i coming back from my
- 00:32:09achilles I came back from the Achilles
- 00:32:11and I was fine and then the next year I
- 00:32:13fracture my knee right it's like here we
- 00:32:16go again come back from that next year
- 00:32:18tear my shoulder here we go again right
- 00:32:21but if I looked at those things in
- 00:32:23totality it'd be depressing but if I
- 00:32:25look at it it's just the facts M this is
- 00:32:28this is it happened can't do anything
- 00:32:30about it it happened now what are you
- 00:32:32going to do one step at a time Achilles
- 00:32:35knee shoulder any step of the way you
- 00:32:38said screw it forget it done no
- 00:32:41more no never no well no why right
- 00:32:45because you know as time goes on I'm
- 00:32:48sitting there um 70 80 years
- 00:32:51old and I'm going to be wondering if I
- 00:32:53could have come back from this injury I
- 00:32:55don't want to wonder I want to find out
- 00:32:57we got to get to that I want see I want
- 00:32:58to see man we get to that yeah like the
- 00:33:01critics are out there saying he's done
- 00:33:02he'll never come back well maybe you're
- 00:33:05right maybe you're not but let's find
- 00:33:07out we got to get there we got to get
- 00:33:10there last one to be Fearless you know
- 00:33:13that's that's something that uh I think
- 00:33:15every young adult young kids they they
- 00:33:18face their fears right what is what does
- 00:33:20that mean to you to be Fearless why is
- 00:33:22that such an important part of the Mamba
- 00:33:24mentality well man because I think the
- 00:33:26greatest fear that we face is ourselves
- 00:33:28actually you know I think it's um it's
- 00:33:31not anything that's external or anything
- 00:33:33that's superficial I think the greatest
- 00:33:35fear you face is yourself because you
- 00:33:37know we all have dreams and it's very
- 00:33:40scary sometimes to accept the dream that
- 00:33:43you have and it's scarier still to say
- 00:33:45Okay I want that it's scary because
- 00:33:49you're afraid that if you put your heart
- 00:33:50and soul into it and you fail then how
- 00:33:53are you going to feel about yourself
- 00:33:55right so being Fearless means putting
- 00:33:57your out there and going for it no
- 00:34:00matter what go for it not for anybody
- 00:34:04else but for yourself when you when you
- 00:34:07when you got to the league you were 18
- 00:34:09did you have any fears before getting
- 00:34:11there or when you got there right away
- 00:34:13yeah I mean you know I had fears that um
- 00:34:15everybody was going to be right I made a
- 00:34:18poor choice poor decision jump from high
- 00:34:20school to TOA and I wasn't going to
- 00:34:22amount to anything so that was always in
- 00:34:24the back of my mind for sure MH and then
- 00:34:27and so out of these five
- 00:34:31pillars which one do you think comes
- 00:34:33first being passionate being Fearless
- 00:34:35Relentless resilient or or or they just
- 00:34:38come together all no this funny thing is
- 00:34:40like we created these separate pillars
- 00:34:43but the reality is it's all one thing
- 00:34:45you know because it all comes from
- 00:34:46within all comes from within us we all
- 00:34:48experience these things at different
- 00:34:50stages and different points different
- 00:34:51times um the key I feel is just to be
- 00:34:54aware of those moments as they occur
- 00:34:57right you're aware aare of a certain
- 00:34:58fear or um a certain obstacle or
- 00:35:02challenge right you're just aware of
- 00:35:03those things and then from there you can
- 00:35:05navigate through them um but I look them
- 00:35:07all I look at them all as
- 00:35:09one one connecting um thing because I
- 00:35:14think uh being Fearless this last one U
- 00:35:16sticks out in my mind a lot because uh
- 00:35:19you know being in Asia Asian kids a lot
- 00:35:23of times they're a little bit more boxed
- 00:35:25in in in thought in mentality as opposed
- 00:35:29to Western kids Western kids the lot of
- 00:35:32the family the environment you know ever
- 00:35:34since a young age in school it's it's
- 00:35:36preaching Independence speak your
- 00:35:38thoughts be creative independent you
- 00:35:40know a lot of that you know it's in its
- 00:35:42in its it's also reiterated by teachers
- 00:35:44principles um mothers and fathers and
- 00:35:47aunts and uncles and coaches is to to
- 00:35:50bring name to yourself and to be
- 00:35:51independent to be out there and go on
- 00:35:53your own but in in eastern in Asia a lot
- 00:35:56of the cultures whether it's Chinese
- 00:35:58Japanese Korean it's you know don't go
- 00:36:00out there and do crazy things don't go
- 00:36:02out of your comfort zone bring make your
- 00:36:05family proud you know don't don't bring
- 00:36:07other people attention just do your
- 00:36:08thing do it well but don't bring
- 00:36:10attention you know it's and I think a
- 00:36:12lot of kids are fearful of going out of
- 00:36:15this box right is there advice for these
- 00:36:18kids because a lot of times it's a
- 00:36:20cultural difference sure right you know
- 00:36:22how how how do how do they put
- 00:36:24themselves out there when listen it's
- 00:36:26very simple you have to dance
- 00:36:28beautifully in the box that you are
- 00:36:30comfortable dancing
- 00:36:31in right so like everybody's box is
- 00:36:35different my box was to be extremely
- 00:36:37ambitious within the sport of basketball
- 00:36:40your box it's different than mine right
- 00:36:42every kid here has their own box but
- 00:36:44doesn't mean that your box isn't as
- 00:36:45beautiful as mine right everybody has
- 00:36:49their own it's your job to try to
- 00:36:51perfect it and make it as beautiful of a
- 00:36:53canvas as you can make it and if you
- 00:36:55have done that then you have lived the
- 00:36:57successful life you have lived with
- 00:36:58Mamba
- 00:36:59mentality right so it doesn't mean you
- 00:37:01have to go out here and do all these
- 00:37:02crazy things I'll have to be like this
- 00:37:04person or that person no what are you
- 00:37:06comfortable being what it is that what
- 00:37:08what is it that you want to do with your
- 00:37:09life and once you have that then you try
- 00:37:11to live it to the best of your ability
- 00:37:14so you know uh growing up in Italy and
- 00:37:17then moving on to Philadelphia and then
- 00:37:20to La you know obviously you talk about
- 00:37:23this box right so is is that box
- 00:37:26constantly changing are are you trying
- 00:37:27to get out of your comfort
- 00:37:30zone even when you were you know first
- 00:37:32year in the NBA and then 10th year in
- 00:37:34the NBA and then even this year does
- 00:37:36that box that this metaphorical box you
- 00:37:38talk about does that change no I never
- 00:37:39try I never looked at it as like I'm
- 00:37:41just going to you know uh try something
- 00:37:44completely crazy or like just just go
- 00:37:47out of my box with a thing I just looked
- 00:37:49at it as I want to be one of the best
- 00:37:52basketball players who've ever played
- 00:37:54that's the end goal okay how do I get
- 00:37:56there how do I get there and every
- 00:37:59decision I made in my life was centered
- 00:38:01around the process of helping me
- 00:38:03eventually get there you know what I'm
- 00:38:06saying so I had that purpose once I had
- 00:38:08that purpose every decision that I made
- 00:38:10was centered around that purpose you
- 00:38:12think you got there looking back upon it
- 00:38:14now two decades in the MBA you know High
- 00:38:18School uh Italy to high school in
- 00:38:20Philadelphia to the NBA you spent your
- 00:38:22whole career with uh one organization to
- 00:38:25me is the your big accomplishment to be
- 00:38:28with one team thank you
- 00:38:31um you look back upon it now when you
- 00:38:34had your goals as a kid you're 5 years
- 00:38:36old you wanted to be in the NBA and then
- 00:38:38when you're at low Marian in
- 00:38:39Philadelphia and those dreams started to
- 00:38:41become hey I'm going to get there right
- 00:38:43and then you're in the NBA you set goals
- 00:38:45for yourself you talk about all the time
- 00:38:47when you're young in the NBA you set
- 00:38:48Personal Achievement goals I'm going to
- 00:38:50win a game I'm going to win a
- 00:38:51championship I'm going to win the MVP
- 00:38:53I'm going to win this I'm going to win
- 00:38:55that and then later on you changed
- 00:38:56because you said I'm just going to get
- 00:38:58better and when I if I'm going to get a
- 00:39:00better left hand I'm going to have a
- 00:39:01better three-pointer I'm going to have a
- 00:39:02better free throw those other personal
- 00:39:04achievements come naturally now you're
- 00:39:06done mhm played your final game 60
- 00:39:08points you dropped it on Utah Mamba out
- 00:39:11right yeah you look back upon it now
- 00:39:14where do you see yourself did you did
- 00:39:16you do everything you wanted to do did
- 00:39:18you become the B best basketball player
- 00:39:20you can ever become did you become the
- 00:39:23best it's weird like I the my um vision
- 00:39:28of um what my goal is changed
- 00:39:30drastically as I got older so like as a
- 00:39:33kid I said I want to be the best ever
- 00:39:35right and now you go through your life
- 00:39:36and everything you do is try to be the
- 00:39:37best ever be the best ever be the best
- 00:39:39ever and as you get older you start
- 00:39:40understanding that those things are very
- 00:39:42superficial things right and everybody
- 00:39:44has a different opinion about it no
- 00:39:45matter what you do I can win 20
- 00:39:47championships there's always an opinion
- 00:39:48on who's the best everybody has
- 00:39:50different opinions and so I started
- 00:39:52really kind of understanding maybe
- 00:39:53that's not the important thing maybe the
- 00:39:55important thing is to you know how do we
- 00:39:58as a team grow how do I help my
- 00:40:01teammates be better so that was the
- 00:40:04first change for me and then as I got
- 00:40:06older still it became more about um how
- 00:40:10are you inspiring others right to find
- 00:40:13themselves that is the ultimate
- 00:40:15Championship so won five championships
- 00:40:18that's great another team won a
- 00:40:19championship this year team's going to
- 00:40:21win a championship next year those
- 00:40:22things come and they go but what stays
- 00:40:24is how do you use your passion and and
- 00:40:27use that to inspire somebody else to
- 00:40:29create their passion and then how can
- 00:40:31they pass that on to the next person
- 00:40:34that is true success um so my goals have
- 00:40:37changed drastically from the time I was
- 00:40:396 years old to the time I was 17 to the
- 00:40:41time I was 25 and now sitting here at
- 00:40:4437 so now you left the game of
- 00:40:47basketball we're here in Shanghai uh
- 00:40:50we're going to end our talk today
- 00:40:51because uh we've gone a little bit past
- 00:40:53our limit but I think everybody is very
- 00:40:55happy to be here and I think they
- 00:40:56learned a lot about the M Mamba
- 00:40:58mentality right um what's what's next
- 00:41:02you know for you well I mean it's it's
- 00:41:04always teaching the game right teaching
- 00:41:06the game through various ways you know
- 00:41:08it's we do camps and Clinics we do those
- 00:41:10things and but also through storytelling
- 00:41:13right how can you how can you share
- 00:41:15stories with the rest of the world that
- 00:41:18challenges them to look internally and
- 00:41:20and to learn things like process and
- 00:41:23learn how to navigate the sense of self
- 00:41:25and all these things how can you infuse
- 00:41:27that into
- 00:41:28entertainment in a way that pushes our
- 00:41:30culture and our society forward you know
- 00:41:32those are the questions that I'm really
- 00:41:33really intrigued by and that's where
- 00:41:34we'll focus on ladies and gentlemen one
- 00:41:36of the greatest of all time Kobe Bryant
- 00:41:39thank
- 00:41:41you thanks so
- 00:41:45much thanks everybody at Ted
