00:00:00
we're really excited to talk today about
00:00:02
the foundations of social and emotional
00:00:04
learning this is an sel 101 we're going
00:00:07
to be talking about what sel is and
00:00:11
how we see it promoted throughout
00:00:13
schools and communities and we'll be
00:00:16
also sharing with you resources for
00:00:17
those of you that want to dig a little
00:00:19
deeper
00:00:20
uh before we get into the meet let's
00:00:22
start by uh thinking a little bit about
00:00:25
students or young people who are in our
00:00:27
lives
00:00:28
let's think about a young person in your
00:00:31
life and think about what is it that you
00:00:33
hope that they will learn and be able to
00:00:35
do to prepare them for the world
00:00:36
tomorrow
00:00:38
so i invite you to add into the chat
00:00:42
a comment or two about how you what you
00:00:44
would prioritize for the young people in
00:00:46
your lives and what would be most
00:00:48
important to prepare them for the world
00:00:49
that they will be living in
00:00:56
resiliency i see a lot of compassion
00:01:00
wow it's going quickly
00:01:02
perseverance
00:01:04
empathy
00:01:05
strong relationships
00:01:07
emotion regulation
00:01:09
a growth mindset gratitude these are all
00:01:13
amazing responses i'm happy to see all
00:01:16
of these things popping in here
00:01:20
and this really does set us up well for
00:01:22
what we're going to be talking about
00:01:24
today before we get into sel just a
00:01:27
brief note on who is castle
00:01:30
for those of you that are new to castle
00:01:31
castle's been around for 27 years
00:01:34
we're the collaborative for academic
00:01:36
social and emotional learning it's a
00:01:38
non-partisan nonprofit
00:01:40
that defines social emotional learning
00:01:42
more than 20 years ago
00:01:45
the goal of castle's mission is to
00:01:47
really help make sure that sel is part
00:01:50
of every child's education pre-k through
00:01:52
12. we do that in a number of different
00:01:55
ways we do that by advancing the science
00:01:57
of sel
00:01:59
by really looking at what does the
00:02:00
research say about social emotional
00:02:02
learning and its impact on
00:02:05
other outcomes
00:02:06
we also have a practice team which is
00:02:09
what i lead our practice team to really
00:02:11
understand what does sel look like in
00:02:14
classrooms in schools and in districts
00:02:17
we have a policy effort which is where
00:02:19
we're focused on the federal level and
00:02:21
most importantly the state level to
00:02:23
create those conditions within states so
00:02:26
that districts can prioritize seo
00:02:28
and all of this is done in collaboration
00:02:31
with
00:02:32
sel
00:02:33
partners and organizations and convening
00:02:37
folks together to really bring forth the
00:02:39
best research the best practice the best
00:02:41
policy ideas so that we can advance the
00:02:43
field
00:02:45
sometimes people think that castle has a
00:02:47
program or curriculum ourselves we do
00:02:49
not we're collaborative and we are
00:02:51
really
00:02:52
our goal is to advance the field so
00:02:54
let's take a quick poll before we get
00:02:56
into the sel and just answer quickly
00:02:59
how familiar are you with social and
00:03:02
emotional learning
00:03:09
so go ahead and answer if you're
00:03:10
extremely familiar you're a pro or
00:03:12
you're somewhat familiar moderately
00:03:14
familiar or not familiar at all
00:03:23
i'm just going to give it about five
00:03:25
more seconds and then we'll take a look
00:03:26
at the results
00:03:30
all right so this will help me to get a
00:03:34
sense of who's in our audience and how
00:03:36
much time to spend on different things
00:03:38
ah looks like most of our audience
00:03:40
almost half
00:03:41
is moderately familiar um and actually a
00:03:44
big chunk of you are extremely familiar
00:03:46
so thank you for joining us um and some
00:03:49
of you are somewhat familiar and a small
00:03:52
percentage are this may be your first
00:03:54
opportunity to learn about social
00:03:55
emotional learning so we're happy to
00:03:57
have all of you here today
00:03:59
before i tell you about castle's
00:04:01
definition we are going to actually hear
00:04:03
from a student who can describe for us
00:04:06
how they understand seo
00:04:20
social emotional learning to me
00:04:22
provides students with purpose seo
00:04:24
was a great foundation and
00:04:27
catalyst for me atomic to value
00:04:29
education and value human connection
00:04:32
well seo
00:04:33
taught you to step up when you need to
00:04:35
but also step back when you
00:04:37
had to so you were creating space for
00:04:39
yourself but also making space for
00:04:41
others
00:04:44
so this is in the words of a student and
00:04:46
we think it's always great to bring the
00:04:48
voice of kids into the conversation
00:04:51
let's talk about castle's definition and
00:04:53
how we understand social and emotional
00:04:56
learning
00:04:57
so this actually this definition has
00:04:59
been updated um about
00:05:02
gosh almost a year ago now the
00:05:04
definition now is the process through
00:05:06
which all young people and adults
00:05:08
acquire and apply the knowledge skills
00:05:10
and attitudes to develop healthy
00:05:12
identities to manage their emotions and
00:05:15
achieve personal and collective goals to
00:05:17
feel and show empathy for others to
00:05:19
establish those positive relationships
00:05:21
and to make good decisions
00:05:24
you all may be familiar with the
00:05:27
research on sel and there's a lot of
00:05:29
research on our website that that our
00:05:31
research team has been synthesizing and
00:05:33
conducting these are some of the high
00:05:35
level outcomes that we've seen and this
00:05:37
has been well documented that sel leads
00:05:40
to improved academic outcomes and
00:05:43
behaviors that sel benefits are not
00:05:46
short term but they are actually long
00:05:48
term and that we see benefits globally
00:05:51
we know that investing in sel is a wise
00:05:54
financial investment there's research
00:05:56
that suggests that investment in sel has
00:05:59
an 11 to 1 return on investment
00:06:01
and we also know that it's not simply
00:06:04
about outcomes in school but long-term
00:06:07
life outcomes
00:06:09
so if you're interested in more about
00:06:11
the research
00:06:13
you can learn about the meta-analysis
00:06:15
and all the different studies that have
00:06:16
been done on sel by clicking on this
00:06:18
link below which when you receive the
00:06:20
slides this will take you to where you
00:06:22
can learn more about sel research
00:06:26
when we think about why schools and
00:06:28
districts implement sel we've learned
00:06:31
that schools and districts have a number
00:06:33
of different priorities for why they see
00:06:36
sel as a key part of their mission these
00:06:39
are some examples of the kinds of
00:06:41
priorities that school districts have
00:06:44
that they really feel like their sel
00:06:46
implementation is designed to
00:06:48
advance
00:06:49
in some cases schools are focused on the
00:06:52
benefit of sel to their academic
00:06:54
achievement others are really focused on
00:06:56
college and career readiness workforce
00:06:58
readiness
00:06:59
we see a growing number of schools and
00:07:01
districts who are understanding that sel
00:07:03
can play a critical role in their equity
00:07:05
work
00:07:07
obviously mental health is a key
00:07:09
priority across the nation especially in
00:07:11
the wake of the pandemic
00:07:14
and also really understanding that sel
00:07:16
is foundational to civic learning and
00:07:18
civic engagement these are just a few of
00:07:20
the different priorities that we've seen
00:07:22
and we really do believe that every
00:07:25
school should examine what their local
00:07:28
priorities are and what their vision is
00:07:30
for their young people and then think
00:07:32
about their sel implementation as part
00:07:35
of advancing that mission
00:07:37
so when you think about these priorities
00:07:39
or others that you may have
00:07:41
which of these are you working on when
00:07:44
you think about scl implementation so
00:07:45
we'll take another quick poll to kind of
00:07:47
hear from our audience about which of
00:07:48
these or other priorities your sel
00:07:51
implementation is focused on
00:08:05
so thanks for clicking in on which of
00:08:07
these you feel is for your local context
00:08:11
most relevant
00:08:12
i'm eager to see the results of this
00:08:14
poll and love the opportunity to hear
00:08:16
directly from you in real time
00:08:19
so go ahead and click on one of these
00:08:21
boxes and
00:08:23
if you selected other go ahead and drop
00:08:25
in the chat what your other is
00:08:30
and i'll give it about five more seconds
00:08:32
and then we'll see
00:08:34
what folks are focusing on
00:08:44
ah mental health with a strong showing
00:08:47
at 76
00:08:48
i have to say i would have predicted
00:08:50
that especially in this day and age the
00:08:53
priority for sel
00:08:55
had been growing significantly before
00:08:58
the pandemic and we've seen a really
00:09:01
sharp increase in the priority for sel
00:09:04
as a result of the pandemic
00:09:06
so i'm not surprised to see that mental
00:09:08
health is top of mind for so many folks
00:09:10
and we agree with you that social and
00:09:12
emotional learning is a key
00:09:15
element to providing a preventative um
00:09:19
and positive universal approach to
00:09:22
supporting positive mental health
00:09:24
also about a third of you are saying
00:09:26
academics is a key priority which we
00:09:30
know from research that sel can have a
00:09:32
strong impact on academics college and
00:09:34
career readiness is in there at 16
00:09:38
um equity at 31
00:09:40
so that is another trend that we've seen
00:09:42
throughout the country over the last
00:09:44
several years that our mission for
00:09:46
equity we recognize that sel can play a
00:09:48
role there as well
00:09:50
and civic learning is something that's a
00:09:52
little smaller percentage but we'll be
00:09:55
talking later about how we'll be sharing
00:09:56
more information about scl's role in
00:09:58
civic learning next week at our virtual
00:10:01
summit
00:10:02
okay and in the other category
00:10:05
it looks like many people have popped
00:10:07
into the chat that they are looking at
00:10:09
some other things climate and culture in
00:10:12
schools nutrition education
00:10:14
um
00:10:16
really looking at physical and healthy
00:10:18
development responsible thinking and
00:10:20
ethics so lots of ways in which you see
00:10:24
priorities showing up at schools and how
00:10:26
sel can play an important role in that
00:10:29
so let's talk for a minute about what we
00:10:31
mean by social and emotional learning
00:10:34
i think probably many of you are
00:10:35
familiar with castle's wheel
00:10:38
we're going to just take a minute and
00:10:40
talk about these competencies we these
00:10:43
five competencies are interrelated
00:10:47
and they are critically important and
00:10:49
they sort of within each one there's a
00:10:52
number of examples of things that would
00:10:54
be
00:10:55
sort of exemplars of that competency
00:10:57
let's start in this orange section with
00:11:00
um the self so when we think about
00:11:03
self-awareness we think about how do we
00:11:06
understand who we are how we feel
00:11:09
what we value
00:11:11
what our growth mindset might be
00:11:14
what is our sense of purpose what
00:11:16
matters to me this is really about how
00:11:18
we understand ourselves and our own
00:11:21
thoughts and beliefs and values and this
00:11:24
is critically important that we really
00:11:26
take time to reflect on who we are
00:11:29
and also on the self-management this has
00:11:32
to do with how we behave as an
00:11:34
individual how do we manage those
00:11:36
emotions how do we manage stress how do
00:11:39
we manage our impulses how do we stay
00:11:41
focused
00:11:42
how do we have perseverance in the face
00:11:44
of obstacles how do we stay organized
00:11:47
how do we take initiative how do we
00:11:49
understand that we have power to make a
00:11:51
difference all of this is part of our
00:11:54
sort of self-management
00:11:56
and um you know understanding who we are
00:11:59
and how we behave given what we
00:12:01
understand about ourselves
00:12:03
so let's next move into the green zone
00:12:05
which is where we really think about
00:12:07
others
00:12:08
in social awareness this is where we
00:12:10
really begin to understand how other
00:12:12
people think how other people feel can
00:12:15
we can we read body language can't we to
00:12:17
tell how people are feeling can we put
00:12:20
ourselves in their shoes to really
00:12:22
understand their perspective
00:12:24
can we express gratitude um can we
00:12:27
create and experience a sense of
00:12:30
belonging with others do we understand
00:12:32
what the social norms and demands are at
00:12:35
any given time what's going on around us
00:12:37
that's all the social awareness
00:12:40
and then of course it's how do we engage
00:12:42
with others
00:12:43
than all of that so how do we
00:12:45
communicate effectively how do we
00:12:47
demonstrate cultural competence how do
00:12:49
we build positive and healthy
00:12:51
relationships how do we manage conflict
00:12:53
how do we ask for help when we need it
00:12:55
how do we offer help when we see that
00:12:57
others need it what kind of leadership
00:12:59
we have here and really are we willing
00:13:02
to engage with others and stand up for
00:13:04
others when we see um when we see that
00:13:06
there's a need for that so the green
00:13:08
zone is about how we understand others
00:13:10
and how we engage effectively with them
00:13:13
and then we put that all together to
00:13:14
make responsible decisions so are we
00:13:18
are we being curious to learn more about
00:13:21
situations and analyzing what could be
00:13:23
what could be consequences of different
00:13:25
decisions are we able to solve problems
00:13:28
on our own and together are we able to
00:13:31
sort of take be ethical in how we behave
00:13:34
are we able to reflect on my role and
00:13:36
what role i can play in the broader
00:13:38
community that's the responsible
00:13:40
decision making so these are the
00:13:41
different competencies and skills that
00:13:44
we know are foundational to success in
00:13:49
school success in the workplace and
00:13:51
success in life
00:13:52
and when we want to promote these within
00:13:55
school there's a lot of different ways
00:13:57
that we would do that
00:13:59
there are key settings that are
00:14:01
critically important as we think about a
00:14:03
systemic approach to promoting social
00:14:06
emotional competence the first and
00:14:08
obvious one is the classroom here's
00:14:10
where you would find
00:14:11
curriculum that's designed to teach
00:14:13
those skills you would find
00:14:15
opportunities for a positive classroom
00:14:18
climate
00:14:19
and ways that we're engaging together
00:14:22
also within the school there are
00:14:24
opportunities to promote social and
00:14:25
emotional competence throughout the
00:14:27
building in terms of how the school
00:14:28
climate and how the adults are
00:14:30
interacting with each other there are
00:14:32
also really important opportunities as
00:14:34
we partner with families and caregivers
00:14:37
to work together to promote healthy
00:14:39
social emotional competence for our
00:14:41
young people and to relate positively to
00:14:43
families and caregivers and throughout
00:14:46
our community so here's where we would
00:14:48
really want to align our efforts with
00:14:50
community partners and also think about
00:14:52
how we can contribute to our communities
00:14:53
through service learning and what have
00:14:55
you
00:14:55
um so this model is castle's model for
00:14:59
school-wide sel where we are promoting
00:15:02
these social and emotional competencies
00:15:05
within these different environments and
00:15:06
we're coordinating the practices um and
00:15:10
policies within the different
00:15:12
environments so that we are promoting
00:15:14
what we call a systemic approach
00:15:16
but this model is still pretty abstract
00:15:18
and sometimes people ask us so what does
00:15:20
that actually look like in a school
00:15:24
here are 10 indicators of school-wide
00:15:28
sel
00:15:29
that really provide more information
00:15:31
about what this looks like within a
00:15:33
school so sometimes people believe oh if
00:15:36
we're doing sel in our school that means
00:15:38
we're doing explicit sel instruction and
00:15:41
we would say yes that is super important
00:15:44
and it's really important that schools
00:15:46
allocate time for explicit instruction
00:15:48
and sel skills but it's by no means
00:15:51
sufficient so in addition to that sel
00:15:54
instruction that's explicit we also know
00:15:57
that there are great opportunities to
00:15:58
promote social emotional competence
00:16:01
while teaching academic content so it's
00:16:04
not a either or it's a both and
00:16:07
additionally we know that it's important
00:16:09
for young people to have an opportunity
00:16:11
to use their voice to make decisions to
00:16:14
show leadership
00:16:16
within the classroom and within the
00:16:17
school
00:16:19
also throughout the school we know it's
00:16:21
important that the climate and the
00:16:23
culture of the school is supportive and
00:16:25
positive that the adults themselves have
00:16:28
an opportunity to reflect on and develop
00:16:31
their own social emotional competence so
00:16:33
they can be in healthy relationships
00:16:34
with each other and with students and
00:16:36
model those skills we know that
00:16:38
discipline policy can promote social and
00:16:40
emotional learning in in restorative
00:16:43
ways
00:16:44
um if we are careful about how we
00:16:46
structure those policies and and provide
00:16:48
that support
00:16:50
we also know it's important to provide
00:16:52
an integrated support just like you
00:16:54
would for academics that there are
00:16:56
universal tier one supports for social
00:16:59
emotional learning and that there are
00:17:00
also opportunities to provide additional
00:17:02
support for students who need that
00:17:05
i mentioned earlier that authentic
00:17:07
family partnerships is a key part as
00:17:09
well as authentic community partnerships
00:17:11
where we are aligned in our mission and
00:17:14
always looking at what we're doing and
00:17:16
thinking about are we getting the
00:17:18
results we're looking for and how should
00:17:20
we improve our implementation to achieve
00:17:22
those results so the continuous
00:17:23
improvement process is key so these are
00:17:26
the different sort of things that you
00:17:28
would see in a school that is
00:17:30
prioritizing social emotional learning
00:17:32
it can be overwhelming to think that we
00:17:34
have to do all of these things typically
00:17:36
castle would recommend that schools
00:17:38
focus on certain priorities at a time
00:17:42
not try to do everything at once and we
00:17:44
provide a lot of guidance free on our
00:17:46
website on how to do that let's take
00:17:48
another poll and just reflect on these
00:17:51
10 indicators and think about which of
00:17:53
these do you think is an area of
00:17:56
strength which is something that you
00:17:58
feel your school or district is doing
00:18:01
well in this moment
00:18:03
and secondly which of these represents
00:18:06
an area of growth
00:18:10
so emily's going to launch this question
00:18:12
here
00:18:13
so there's two questions here the first
00:18:16
one again is to look at what do you
00:18:18
think your school or district what's
00:18:20
relatively speaking an area of strength
00:18:25
and relatively speaking where do you
00:18:27
feel like would be an important area for
00:18:30
you to focus for growth
00:18:38
this will take just a few more minutes
00:18:55
all right we'll give it just a few more
00:18:57
seconds and then we'll look at the
00:18:58
results make sure you see that there are
00:19:00
two questions you have to scroll down to
00:19:03
get to that second one which represents
00:19:05
an area of strength relatively speaking
00:19:08
and where do you feel like there's great
00:19:10
opportunity for growth
00:19:12
okay
00:19:13
uh emily let's see
00:19:15
what we learned
00:19:17
wow so this is kind of all over the
00:19:19
board here
00:19:23
i don't know if you all are able to see
00:19:25
the full results but it looks like
00:19:27
supportive climate is maybe the most
00:19:30
often
00:19:31
it has the most responses relative to
00:19:33
the others and that's at 20 so a fifth
00:19:36
of you believe that you have a strong
00:19:38
climate which is great
00:19:40
um and it looks like
00:19:42
uh in this first one
00:19:44
um
00:19:45
very few would list adult sel as a
00:19:49
strength which is interesting to me
00:19:51
because adult sel has a lot to do with
00:19:55
how we create a supportive climate um so
00:19:57
that's kind of an interesting finding
00:19:59
there and then let's look at how we
00:20:02
responded on the second one which
00:20:04
represents an area of growth which we
00:20:06
see lots of areas of growth and again
00:20:08
adult sel has a lot of folks 29 saying
00:20:12
this is an area of growth family
00:20:14
partnerships looks like an area of
00:20:16
growth
00:20:18
um actually it looks like since people
00:20:21
were able to select more than one that
00:20:23
there's a lot more areas of growth
00:20:26
uh
00:20:27
reported here than strength so it looks
00:20:28
like we all have work to do i think
00:20:31
what's helpful about looking at these
00:20:32
indicators is recognizing that um
00:20:35
you know a systemic approach to sel is
00:20:38
not just one thing there are many
00:20:41
different ways that we can be promoting
00:20:43
uh our young people's social emotional
00:20:45
learning and we don't have to take all
00:20:47
of it on at once but just being aware of
00:20:49
the different areas can be helpful as we
00:20:51
think about our work
00:20:54
okay so let's move on we're not going to
00:20:58
have time to get into
00:21:00
how you actually do this which is i know
00:21:02
what everyone is really eager to learn
00:21:05
um but castle does have a number of
00:21:08
resources that are free and available on
00:21:11
our website that can help you really
00:21:14
think about what are the first steps for
00:21:17
getting a systemic approach to sel
00:21:20
implemented and how do i work with
00:21:22
others to do that whether you're at a
00:21:24
school level or a district level
00:21:27
on our website i'm just going to give
00:21:28
you kind of a quick preview of some of
00:21:30
the things that you'll find on our
00:21:32
website
00:21:33
if you're at a district level the
00:21:35
district resource center is extremely
00:21:38
valuable as a resource because the
00:21:40
district resource center
00:21:42
gives an overview of
00:21:44
how you do this at a district level
00:21:47
it provides guidance on the different
00:21:49
areas of implementation and it also
00:21:52
provides examples from other districts
00:21:55
who have already done this
00:21:57
so when we think about the ways to do a
00:21:59
systemic implementation at the district
00:22:01
level
00:22:02
for example one of the key areas is
00:22:04
developing a communications plan for how
00:22:07
parents and staff and students will
00:22:09
understand the priority for sel rather
00:22:11
than starting from scratch you'll find
00:22:13
in the district resource center
00:22:14
templates for doing that examples from
00:22:17
other districts you'll see strategic
00:22:18
plans on for example and you'll see lots
00:22:21
of those you know sel 101 presentations
00:22:24
that other districts have given don't
00:22:25
need to reinvent the wheels the district
00:22:27
resource center is extremely valuable
00:22:29
and at the school level
00:22:31
there's the guide to school-wide sel and
00:22:34
that really is designed to help
00:22:36
schools
00:22:38
think about how they can get started
00:22:40
with their implementation there's a
00:22:42
rubric if you want to do a
00:22:43
self-assessment that goes through those
00:22:45
10 indicators and you can rate yourself
00:22:47
on how
00:22:48
how deep is your implementation on each
00:22:50
of those which can help you lead to your
00:22:52
action plan
00:22:53
and then there's guidance on how to
00:22:55
think about everything from establishing
00:22:58
an sel team to creating a vision to how
00:23:00
to think about promoting um social
00:23:03
emotional learning for students and a
00:23:05
continuous improvement strategy so the
00:23:07
school guide to school-wide sel is
00:23:09
extremely valuable for schools who are
00:23:11
thinking about how they approach this
00:23:14
work
00:23:15
if you want more than that guidance on
00:23:17
our website there actually is
00:23:19
professional learning that castle offers
00:23:22
um both live and on demand we have a
00:23:24
live uh version a live session that will
00:23:28
be started in january that's a four part
00:23:30
series that you can register for we'll
00:23:32
also be launching an on-demand series if
00:23:34
you are not able to make the live time
00:23:36
so there is professional learning that
00:23:38
really takes you through
00:23:39
how do we actually do this in our school
00:23:42
if assessment is something that you're
00:23:44
interested in there is also guidance on
00:23:46
how to assess social and emotional
00:23:48
learning and how to choose an
00:23:51
appropriate measure for that whether
00:23:52
you're thinking about assessing your
00:23:54
implementation or assessing the outcomes
00:23:57
that students might get
00:23:59
you can see the sel assessment guide
00:24:02
one of the most common questions that we
00:24:04
often hear is how do i choose a program
00:24:07
for social emotional learning
00:24:09
again castle does not have a program but
00:24:11
castle has reviewed the evidence in the
00:24:14
field on how programs have been
00:24:16
effective so the guide to sel programs
00:24:19
is available and that can help you think
00:24:20
through a process for selecting an
00:24:22
evidence-based program
00:24:24
we also have the fcl roadmap to
00:24:26
reopening which helps
00:24:28
schools that are reopening after covid
00:24:30
think about the best way to reopen
00:24:33
by this time i'm hopeful that all
00:24:35
schools have reopened but there's great
00:24:37
guidance in there as well and then
00:24:38
there's also some really important
00:24:40
resources available for
00:24:42
for parents and thinking about how they
00:24:45
can promote social emotional learning
00:24:46
including a a recent campaign to help
00:24:50
parents learn more about scl so all
00:24:53
these resources are available on our
00:24:55
website if you go to castle.org
00:24:58
you'll see up in the upper right corner
00:25:01
castle websites that's where you're
00:25:02
going to find most of these resources
00:25:04
because they're all kind of mini
00:25:07
websites within castle's website
