vice president of personal banking and
  • 00:01:16
the country head for cayman but before i
  • 00:01:19
do move into a breakdown of the banking
  • 00:01:20
industry uh jade why don't you introduce
  • 00:01:22
    yourself
  • 00:01:25
sure good afternoon everyone my name is
  • 00:01:27
    jade wheeler i'm 24 years old i am a
  • 00:01:31
mobile mortgage specialist with rbc and
  • 00:01:33
i've been with the business for five
  • 00:01:35
    years
  • 00:01:36
as a mobile market specialist i assist
  • 00:01:38
persons with obtaining their home or
  • 00:01:40
simply just preparing for um that new
  • 00:01:43
    that few
  • 00:01:44
that that future financial um goal that
  • 00:01:47
    you're working towards
  • 00:01:50
great thank you so much and so hannah
  • 00:01:53
you know you have asked a really great
  • 00:01:54
question around giving a breakdown of
  • 00:01:57
the mankind industry and it's an
  • 00:01:59
interesting question um because you know
  • 00:02:00
one of the most popular industries in
  • 00:02:02
finance is the banking industry um the
  • 00:02:05
    mike industry includes systems of
  • 00:02:08
    financial institution called banks that
  • 00:02:10
    provides valuable services like storing
  • 00:02:12
    your funds just simply putting
  • 00:02:15
managing credit as well as facilitating
  • 00:02:17
transactions so in a nutshell banks can
  • 00:02:20
help people store and use their money
  • 00:02:23
the banking industry is also about is
  • 00:02:26
really valuable to the economy as it
  • 00:02:28
    provides resources for individuals
  • 00:02:30
    families organizations even governments
  • 00:02:32
for the use of transactions and
  • 00:02:34
    investments
  • 00:02:35
    now
  • 00:02:37
there are basically three segments of
  • 00:02:38
banking per se uh we have retail banking
  • 00:02:41
on personal banking and i think that's
  • 00:02:43
the one that most of us are familiar
  • 00:02:45
with uh it involves the deposit accounts
  • 00:02:47
like your savings and checking accounts
  • 00:02:49
your mortgages loans credit cards debit
  • 00:02:51
cards all the things that we know and
  • 00:02:54
this is where i would have spent most of
  • 00:02:56
my banking career there's also wholesale
  • 00:02:58
banking uh where we have business
  • 00:03:00
    banking corporate banking and investment
  • 00:03:02
banking and then we have a form of
  • 00:03:04
wealth management uh where you have
  • 00:03:07
    retail brokerage services and asset
  • 00:03:09
management and you know as one of the
  • 00:03:11
    caribbean's leading diversified
  • 00:03:14
    financial services company rbc provides
  • 00:03:17
the personal and commercial banking the
  • 00:03:19
    wealth management the corporate banking
  • 00:03:21
we even have insurances and trusts and
  • 00:03:24
as i mentioned the asset management
  • 00:03:25
services that we provide to a wide range
  • 00:03:28
    of clients
  • 00:03:30
    individuals small businesses um
  • 00:03:33
    multinational corporations and and like
  • 00:03:35
    i would have mentioned before
  • 00:03:36
governments and with you know more than
  • 00:03:39
100 years of heritage and serving the
  • 00:03:42
    region
  • 00:03:43
rbc is positioned to give our customers
  • 00:03:45
access to an expanded network of
  • 00:03:47
    international services and just a
  • 00:03:49
    greater uh geographic reach
  • 00:03:52
we also have a presence in 10 countries
  • 00:03:55
and territories across the caribbean the
  • 00:03:57
    north which includes cayman islands
  • 00:04:00
bahamas and turks and caicos we're also
  • 00:04:02
located in the south where we have
  • 00:04:04
trinidad and tobago and barbados and we
  • 00:04:06
have five branches also located in dutch
  • 00:04:09
    caribbean
  • 00:04:10
um which is a rhubarb on air curse el
  • 00:04:12
    salvador and syd martin
  • 00:04:14
and we also serve nearly 1 million
  • 00:04:16
clients across the caribbean network and
  • 00:04:19
    our regional headquarters is actually
  • 00:04:21
based in part of spain trinidad and
  • 00:04:23
tobago so so that's just a brief
  • 00:04:25
overview of some of the things but i'm
  • 00:04:28
just so excited uh hannah to to get into
  • 00:04:31
our discussion this afternoon because i
  • 00:04:33
just think it's going to add so much
  • 00:04:35
value to uh the participants on the line
  • 00:04:40
that's fantastic and the fact that also
  • 00:04:44
    rbc as a whole is
  • 00:04:45
    um in different areas different
  • 00:04:47
jurisdictions that also gives a bit of
  • 00:04:49
flexibility as well if somebody is in
  • 00:04:51
banking and maybe wants to move towards
  • 00:04:52
    a different jurisdiction
  • 00:04:55
    across
  • 00:04:56
look their career path right they could
  • 00:04:58
start in cayman but then maybe go to a
  • 00:04:59
different part of the dutch caribbean or
  • 00:05:01
could go to north america right it
  • 00:05:02
    really gives different options and
  • 00:05:04
that's something that happens a lot when
  • 00:05:05
    you're working with a global
  • 00:05:07
firm or a global company um
  • 00:05:10
    so
  • 00:05:11
just on that moving on to
  • 00:05:14
kind of the breakdown i kind of want to
  • 00:05:16
know a little bit more about you both
  • 00:05:19
and how you got started into the
  • 00:05:20
industry so where did you start um erica
  • 00:05:25
yeah so i'll i guess i'll start with
  • 00:05:27
this one and and then we can go on to
  • 00:05:29
jade you know my journey from novice to
  • 00:05:31
    expert started over
  • 00:05:33
29 years ago with another canadian
  • 00:05:36
financial institution in the bahamas i
  • 00:05:38
went from being a part-time teller or
  • 00:05:41
what we now call at rbc a financial
  • 00:05:43
    solution associate
  • 00:05:45
and as you can see that name has evolved
  • 00:05:47
over the past several decades to now the
  • 00:05:50
area vice president of personal banking
  • 00:05:51
    and country i became in
  • 00:05:53
i knew very early on i was looking for
  • 00:05:56
    stability
  • 00:05:58
just a good working environment with
  • 00:06:00
    reliable hours those things were
  • 00:06:01
    important to me
  • 00:06:03
    i really wanted career development
  • 00:06:05
    opportunities um
  • 00:06:07
where i had the you know the opportunity
  • 00:06:09
to choose uh from various different
  • 00:06:11
positions and also a career i feel that
  • 00:06:14
had great benefits the benefits was
  • 00:06:16
important to me as well as competitive
  • 00:06:18
salaries and i found that all within the
  • 00:06:21
    banking industry and more specifically
  • 00:06:23
    with rbc
  • 00:06:24
um i have held a number of rules in the
  • 00:06:27
    banking
  • 00:06:28
over the past several years i and i
  • 00:06:31
still haven't gone through half of the
  • 00:06:33
    positions available within the banking
  • 00:06:35
industry or rbc for that matter
  • 00:06:37
especially when i consider it now even
  • 00:06:39
the pan caribbean rules which you just
  • 00:06:41
spoke about that we offer at rbc but
  • 00:06:44
we'll talk a little bit about that later
  • 00:06:47
but i'll pause now and turn it over to
  • 00:06:49
jade um who will share how she actually
  • 00:06:52
came into the field so jade over to you
  • 00:06:55
    okay hi uh so
  • 00:06:58
similarity similarly to erica i would
  • 00:07:00
have started off as a teller
  • 00:07:03
so having completed high school and
  • 00:07:04
going into college you know i know that
  • 00:07:07
i needed to start my career journey and
  • 00:07:10
growing up in cayman we were taught that
  • 00:07:12
you know the economy is heavily reliant
  • 00:07:14
on banking and tourism and of the the
  • 00:07:16
two banking piqued my interests uh
  • 00:07:18
    because i'm highly motivated by
  • 00:07:20
    challenges
  • 00:07:21
and helping others um and what i did was
  • 00:07:24
i reached out to individuals in the
  • 00:07:26
field to gain some insight um you know
  • 00:07:28
and as well as to express my interests
  • 00:07:30
um i would also get the weekly papers to
  • 00:07:33
search for opportunities and of the
  • 00:07:35
contacts that i made someone actually
  • 00:07:38
reached out to me and you know they
  • 00:07:39
advised me that there were opportunities
  • 00:07:41
    at rbc
  • 00:07:43
and you know i went on to their website
  • 00:07:44
um did a bit of review and they applied
  • 00:07:47
for the post that i was interested in
  • 00:07:48
and it was actually called for an
  • 00:07:50
    interview uh
  • 00:07:52
    which was really exciting um
  • 00:07:54
and you know having gotten the
  • 00:07:56
opportunity to work for one of the
  • 00:07:57
leading canadian banks you know i made
  • 00:08:00
sure that i prepared for my interview uh
  • 00:08:02
by making a list of possible questions
  • 00:08:04
and just going over them um to make sure
  • 00:08:07
that i felt comfortable and confident
  • 00:08:10
and you know a very big point as well
  • 00:08:13
was that i made sure that you know i was
  • 00:08:15
dressed appropriately um i would ask my
  • 00:08:17
mother and my friends you know does this
  • 00:08:18
look good um because you know that's
  • 00:08:20
what my mother would say you know first
  • 00:08:22
    impressions do last
  • 00:08:26
and that's so important that you um no
  • 00:08:28
on that because that first impression
  • 00:08:30
    really
  • 00:08:31
makes that difference right um there's a
  • 00:08:34
statistic that says within the first
  • 00:08:36
90 seconds of an interview the hiring
  • 00:08:38
manager knows whether or not they're
  • 00:08:40
going to move forward with you
  • 00:08:41
right so that that just is telling
  • 00:08:44
enough to say that you know obviously
  • 00:08:46
dress for success um and really put
  • 00:08:48
    yourself out there
  • 00:08:50
    i feel
  • 00:08:51
i definitely resonate with what you said
  • 00:08:53
about checking the papers you know i'm
  • 00:08:55
sure a lot of individuals on this call
  • 00:08:57
right now are currently you know buying
  • 00:08:59
the compass looking on linkedin trying
  • 00:09:01
to see what positions are out there a
  • 00:09:03
    lot of times
  • 00:09:04
it might not be that something is
  • 00:09:06
advertised but really reaching out to an
  • 00:09:08
industry professional kind of like their
  • 00:09:09
shelves and seeing you know are there
  • 00:09:11
opportunities at rbc is there an
  • 00:09:13
opportunity for me to come in and gain
  • 00:09:15
    work experience internship experience
  • 00:09:16
because you never know where that might
  • 00:09:18
    lead
  • 00:09:19
    right
  • 00:09:20
    but absolutely yeah and so
  • 00:09:23
seeing that you've both have started as
  • 00:09:25
tellers and seeing where your careers
  • 00:09:27
have taken you that's just knowing that
  • 00:09:30
where you start is not where you end up
  • 00:09:32
um taking really that first step
  • 00:09:35
into the workforce or into that career
  • 00:09:38
    can
  • 00:09:39
    lead you into
  • 00:09:41
an industry that you might have not
  • 00:09:42
    necessarily jumped into
  • 00:09:45
had you not taken that first step
  • 00:09:47
    so
  • 00:09:48
that's fantastic i love to see careers
  • 00:09:50
    grow and careers
  • 00:09:52
    release like people soar within
  • 00:09:54
    industries that they are passionate
  • 00:09:55
about um which is why we do connect
  • 00:09:58
    are there any education qualifications
  • 00:10:01
that you know are required for somebody
  • 00:10:03
that is interested in the banking
  • 00:10:05
industry i know there's so many
  • 00:10:06
different areas erica but um if you
  • 00:10:09
    could kind of
  • 00:10:10
    lay it down and
  • 00:10:12
claim minimal terms of what what would
  • 00:10:14
    be
  • 00:10:15
an idea of an educational path for
  • 00:10:17
    someone who's interested in banking
  • 00:10:21
right you know rbc is most important as
  • 00:10:24
    it it's our people
  • 00:10:26
    and
  • 00:10:27
at rbc you don't need to be afraid to
  • 00:10:29
    bring
  • 00:10:30
your the real you to work your true self
  • 00:10:32
to work uh different backgrounds and
  • 00:10:35
    experiences
  • 00:10:36
    aren't just accepted
  • 00:10:38
    they're celebrated together we really
  • 00:10:40
support one another and make sure that
  • 00:10:42
    each of us succeed
  • 00:10:45
    we don't just encourage diverse
  • 00:10:47
perspectives and backgrounds we live it
  • 00:10:49
by fostering a culture of innovation
  • 00:10:52
that believes how we do business is just
  • 00:10:55
as important as the business that we do
  • 00:10:57
and a diverse workplace is one that
  • 00:11:00
reflects the makeup of the community
  • 00:11:03
it's an environment where you can bring
  • 00:11:05
your true self to work and thrive and at
  • 00:11:07
rbc we embrace diversity and inclusion
  • 00:11:10
of innovation and growth and it's really
  • 00:11:13
    a fundamental
  • 00:11:14
    value
  • 00:11:15
because we know how valuable every
  • 00:11:17
    unique perspective
  • 00:11:19
actually can be and so just a few
  • 00:11:22
details uh to help you get started uh
  • 00:11:24
applicants must have at least a
  • 00:11:27
    secondary school education with the
  • 00:11:29
    qualifications required for that
  • 00:11:31
particular job now minimum entry level
  • 00:11:34
requirements include the passes of at
  • 00:11:37
least five subjects uh the cxc exams
  • 00:11:39
from grades a b or c and the subjects
  • 00:11:42
must include math or accounts and
  • 00:11:45
    english
  • 00:11:46
now in instances where a candidate
  • 00:11:49
    doesn't have previous
  • 00:11:51
where a candidate may have a previous
  • 00:11:53
work experience but doesn't meet the
  • 00:11:55
    requisite education qualifications for
  • 00:11:57
the role exceptions uh we will consider
  • 00:12:00
    those
  • 00:12:01
um we also know that the transition from
  • 00:12:04
student uh to professional can be a
  • 00:12:07
    challenge and so
  • 00:12:09
we have you know looked at ways where we
  • 00:12:11
can help to get you started we have
  • 00:12:13
partnered with the university uh college
  • 00:12:16
of the cayman islands over the last
  • 00:12:18
several years and have awarded 24
  • 00:12:21
    scholarships to eligible comedians also
  • 00:12:24
in addition to that uh sponsorships
  • 00:12:26
we've agreed to hire two of the
  • 00:12:28
    scholarship recipients are providing
  • 00:12:30
them with the opportunity to gain just
  • 00:12:33
that full hands-on biking experience and
  • 00:12:35
we actually had one of those students
  • 00:12:38
start last week and so i am just
  • 00:12:40
    honestly really excited about this
  • 00:12:42
    program and the endless opportunities
  • 00:12:44
that will come with it for those
  • 00:12:46
individuals who come in on the work
  • 00:12:47
    experience here with us
  • 00:12:50
    that's fantastic i love how
  • 00:12:53
you are connecting with the community
  • 00:12:55
    and offering those entry-level
  • 00:12:57
opportunities as well on top of
  • 00:12:59
    scholarships obviously scholarships is
  • 00:13:02
    something that's very important for
  • 00:13:04
students who are looking to become young
  • 00:13:05
professionals because it helps them on
  • 00:13:07
the educational side but then also
  • 00:13:09
    offering to individuals the opportunity
  • 00:13:11
    to
  • 00:13:12
    gain
  • 00:13:13
um full-time employment with rbc is just
  • 00:13:15
as important so they get that hands-on
  • 00:13:17
    experience
  • 00:13:19
so you mentioned for entry level
  • 00:13:20
positions it is the high school diploma
  • 00:13:23
    plus five cxc passes
  • 00:13:25
which need to include maths in english
  • 00:13:28
right yes okay those two should be a
  • 00:13:30
part of the five and also the grades
  • 00:13:32
    should be a brcc
  • 00:13:35
    passing
  • 00:13:36
    a b or c
  • 00:13:37
so everyone on that call is making no
  • 00:13:39
    note of that
  • 00:13:42
    and
  • 00:13:43
when it comes to obviously different
  • 00:13:45
    tracks um on the educational
  • 00:13:48
side that's that's the minimum but when
  • 00:13:50
as you continue to progress throughout
  • 00:13:52
your career are there any other
  • 00:13:54
    qualifications that you would suggest
  • 00:13:57
    that individuals look at within
  • 00:13:59
    the industry
  • 00:14:01
right i i would say that you know we
  • 00:14:04
as i mentioned we want you to pursue
  • 00:14:06
that degree we want you to you know the
  • 00:14:08
higher education of course you mentioned
  • 00:14:10
compliance that's a huge thing now um
  • 00:14:13
there's a lot of courses and and things
  • 00:14:16
that you can take so if you're going to
  • 00:14:17
come in and you want to look at
  • 00:14:19
    specializing
  • 00:14:20
we haven't even gotten to that yet um
  • 00:14:22
you know you want to specialize in
  • 00:14:23
compliance or marketing or something i
  • 00:14:25
would say then taking additional courses
  • 00:14:28
in those fields that will definitely
  • 00:14:30
    help with
  • 00:14:31
    you know
  • 00:14:32
helping you to move along um once you
  • 00:14:34
enter the banking field the entry level
  • 00:14:36
is entry level but if you're coming in
  • 00:14:39
and you're looking to apply for a role
  • 00:14:42
    that's that's sort of a specialty role
  • 00:14:45
then of course we would want um
  • 00:14:47
    additional supporting uh
  • 00:14:50
educational pieces that will go along
  • 00:14:51
    with it
  • 00:14:52
so basically that's it the high school
  • 00:14:55
    diploma the degrees um
  • 00:14:57
that definitely will help you get it
  • 00:14:59
more closer to the front of the line
  • 00:15:02
    exactly and like you mentioned
  • 00:15:03
compliance um when it comes to
  • 00:15:04
    compliance acams certification is really
  • 00:15:06
the one to go for marketing there's no
  • 00:15:09
    money for
  • 00:15:11
yeah there's so many out there i mean
  • 00:15:13
i'm our marketing person is currently
  • 00:15:15
    doing
  • 00:15:16
an indesign course online so there's a
  • 00:15:19
lot of different areas that you could
  • 00:15:20
specialize in um but yeah starting out
  • 00:15:24
with um high school diploma getting that
  • 00:15:26
degree and then seeing what you want to
  • 00:15:27
move forward with i'm i mean i'm sure
  • 00:15:30
the team is very supportive it just
  • 00:15:31
sounds like from your culture and
  • 00:15:33
meeting um a few members of the rbc team
  • 00:15:36
as well i know that you are all very
  • 00:15:38
much of a family oriented supportive
  • 00:15:40
team that if somebody would want to
  • 00:15:41
    pursue um further education or
  • 00:15:44
specialization i'm sure that the team
  • 00:15:46
would support them in that journey as
  • 00:15:48
well most definitely i mean without even
  • 00:15:50
going into too much we we have programs
  • 00:15:53
    in place for our employees
  • 00:15:55
where we do pay help assist with
  • 00:15:56
    education it's an annual um
  • 00:15:59
stipend that we provide for them and
  • 00:16:01
    there's also a number of
  • 00:16:03
we have a learning platform where
  • 00:16:05
persons can go on and do self-learning
  • 00:16:06
courses um you know it's a lot of
  • 00:16:09
information within our rbc library where
  • 00:16:12
persons can actually build their skills
  • 00:16:14
just by working with us and like i said
  • 00:16:16
we also provide that support so
  • 00:16:18
sometimes persons come in they start in
  • 00:16:20
a role and it's something else that they
  • 00:16:21
want to do with the support of their
  • 00:16:23
    leader their personal development plans
  • 00:16:25
we sort of map out and build out how we
  • 00:16:27
help them get there and it also includes
  • 00:16:30
    assistance educational assistance
  • 00:16:33
    that's wonderful and
  • 00:16:36
there are various opportunities like we
  • 00:16:39
mentioned only just a few just now but
  • 00:16:40
    there are various opportunities
  • 00:16:43
that um one can take within
  • 00:16:46
the banking industry so would you be
  • 00:16:47
able to give me kind of a career track
  • 00:16:50
    progression example
  • 00:16:52
    of somebody at rbc
  • 00:16:55
right i i think it'll be good to use our
  • 00:16:57
own but i want i would i'm gonna pass
  • 00:16:59
this one over to jade first because i
  • 00:17:01
think jay is our progression throughout
  • 00:17:03
the past several years is really a
  • 00:17:06
significant one so jay why don't you
  • 00:17:07
    kick us off
  • 00:17:09
    absolutely um
  • 00:17:11
you know a banking career with rbc can
  • 00:17:14
provide you with a number of
  • 00:17:15
    opportunities
  • 00:17:16
um and the ability to progress
  • 00:17:19
    we have our retail
  • 00:17:21
banking which is otherwise known as
  • 00:17:22
personal banking uh this is the
  • 00:17:24
department where we have our tellers
  • 00:17:26
these are the persons that'll process um
  • 00:17:28
    your your withdrawals your deposits
  • 00:17:31
    your transfers there's a customer
  • 00:17:33
    service representatives and this is
  • 00:17:35
usually the person that you'll see at
  • 00:17:36
    the front desk
  • 00:17:38
    there's currency service agent
  • 00:17:41
the loan officers that'll assist with
  • 00:17:43
any personal loans um educational loans
  • 00:17:46
and you have the managers um of each of
  • 00:17:49
these different uh groups here in the
  • 00:17:51
retail space there's also business in
  • 00:17:53
    corporate banking these persons maintain
  • 00:17:56
    the relationship with businesses and
  • 00:17:58
business clients they support they have
  • 00:18:00
support officers um to the business
  • 00:18:02
    banking officer uh they're also
  • 00:18:05
    business banking electronic sales
  • 00:18:07
specialists um which i find is a really
  • 00:18:09
    interesting role
  • 00:18:11
um especially because we're in a digital
  • 00:18:12
age so this person will assist with
  • 00:18:14
getting person signed up for online
  • 00:18:16
banking uh whereas you don't need to
  • 00:18:18
come into the bank to do most of your
  • 00:18:20
    transactions uh they'll assist with
  • 00:18:22
getting uh e-platforms where you'll go
  • 00:18:25
online you know onto a business and you
  • 00:18:27
    can pay from there
  • 00:18:28
    conveniently there's also the private
  • 00:18:31
    banking department um
  • 00:18:33
    and this department maintains
  • 00:18:34
relationships with persons of high net
  • 00:18:36
worth um with large cash balances there
  • 00:18:39
are the support officers to the private
  • 00:18:41
    banking officers
  • 00:18:43
and the private banking officer is the
  • 00:18:44
primary point of contact for their
  • 00:18:46
    customers they're also the credit
  • 00:18:48
writers for the private banking officers
  • 00:18:51
that will assist with any credit needs
  • 00:18:53
    that their clients will have
  • 00:18:54
and just to give you a live example of
  • 00:18:58
    myself
  • 00:18:59
my banking career started in 2015.
  • 00:19:02
i began as a retail banking associate
  • 00:19:05
otherwise known as a teller and this
  • 00:19:07
role has transformed a lot you know as
  • 00:19:08
    erica would have said earlier
  • 00:19:11
for her it was named differently and i'm
  • 00:19:12
sure some of her duties were a bit
  • 00:19:14
    different as well
  • 00:19:15
i've had the opportunity to provide
  • 00:19:17
coverage at the front desk which is um
  • 00:19:20
noaa client assistant uh in the cash
  • 00:19:23
service department um where you know
  • 00:19:25
    there
  • 00:19:26
they deal with the bulk cash and foreign
  • 00:19:28
    currencies such as usd
  • 00:19:30
gbp euros canadian i've spent some time
  • 00:19:33
in private banking as well covering the
  • 00:19:36
    private banking associate
  • 00:19:39
    and from being a teller
  • 00:19:41
and wanting to add more value to the
  • 00:19:42
business and expand my knowledge i went
  • 00:19:45
on to being a mortgage support associate
  • 00:19:47
may of 2019 where i supported the
  • 00:19:50
mortgage specialist as well as the auto
  • 00:19:52
    finance specialist with their
  • 00:19:54
administrative duties and this gave me
  • 00:19:56
the foundation to transition into being
  • 00:19:58
    a lender
  • 00:20:00
and my lender journey started off with
  • 00:20:02
as an auto finance specialist march of
  • 00:20:04
2020 where i um assisted clients with
  • 00:20:07
obtaining their new vehicle and to
  • 00:20:09
currently being a mortgage specialist um
  • 00:20:12
    as of may 2021
  • 00:20:14
and you know i really enjoy being a
  • 00:20:16
mortgage specialist um it makes me feel
  • 00:20:18
    proud
  • 00:20:20
and you know just being able to help
  • 00:20:22
persons to to achieve one of their
  • 00:20:24
    biggest financial goals
  • 00:20:27
so banking is an extremely rewarding
  • 00:20:29
    career and
  • 00:20:31
    my progression through the banking
  • 00:20:33
    field required sacrifices
  • 00:20:36
ownership of my development meaning you
  • 00:20:38
    know
  • 00:20:38
ensuring that i had a personal
  • 00:20:40
    development plan uh
  • 00:20:42
    checking that regularly
  • 00:20:44
as well as coaching and mentorship
  • 00:20:50
no that that's really great jade and um
  • 00:20:53
you know just to piggyback off of what
  • 00:20:55
jade is jade would have given us a good
  • 00:20:58
overview of the number of rules um you
  • 00:21:00
    know the opportunities uh for
  • 00:21:02
    development
  • 00:21:03
uh in career advancement within banking
  • 00:21:07
it's honestly literally endless and i've
  • 00:21:10
worked um in number of roles over the
  • 00:21:12
    last 29 years some
  • 00:21:14
were for development reasons uh which
  • 00:21:16
    eventually led to promotions uh
  • 00:21:18
    somewhere for learning and unjust
  • 00:21:19
discovery um as she had mentioned i've
  • 00:21:22
had the teller rule uh what we call fsa
  • 00:21:25
head teller um i also worked as a
  • 00:21:27
telesupervisor what we now call manager
  • 00:21:30
    of financial solutions
  • 00:21:32
i was also a branch manager of several
  • 00:21:34
branches some were small where we had
  • 00:21:36
about 15 employees some larger with 45 i
  • 00:21:39
did have a pan-caribbean rule it was
  • 00:21:41
very interesting i had i had the
  • 00:21:42
    oversight for the security and
  • 00:21:44
    collateral management of the business
  • 00:21:46
which also included cayman at that time
  • 00:21:48
and then became a district manager over
  • 00:21:51
several large branches in the bahamas
  • 00:21:53
    and then
  • 00:21:54
specialized in an area as an area vice
  • 00:21:57
president but with a sales force team
  • 00:21:59
but one of the roles that really helped
  • 00:22:02
i think prepared me for the role that
  • 00:22:03
i'm in now was in 2019 i became the
  • 00:22:06
managing director of the mortgage arm
  • 00:22:09
of a business in the bahamas we call
  • 00:22:11
finco uh where i further developed in
  • 00:22:13
the area of dealing with governments and
  • 00:22:15
    the central bank and regulatory
  • 00:22:17
oversight those pieces and because the
  • 00:22:20
company was a public traded company had
  • 00:22:22
exposure to the agm meetings and
  • 00:22:24
preparing for those and so just really
  • 00:22:27
as you can tell just a number of
  • 00:22:28
positions and yes exposure you know that
  • 00:22:31
that has been endless uh my advice you
  • 00:22:34
know at this time if you're looking you
  • 00:22:37
know for the various opportunities as
  • 00:22:38
you move along is really justifying your
  • 00:22:40
    passion
  • 00:22:41
you know what gets you up in the morning
  • 00:22:43
you can't come in every day and do this
  • 00:22:45
for for decades and not love it you know
  • 00:22:47
what puts a smile on your face uh choose
  • 00:22:50
your path and and hopefully um based on
  • 00:22:53
what you're passionate about you'll be
  • 00:22:55
able to work and build in that skill
  • 00:22:56
that you need to be successful um in a
  • 00:22:59
role that you would have chosen uh jade
  • 00:23:01
would have mentioned uh the personal
  • 00:23:03
development plan that is so important
  • 00:23:05
setting timelines as to when you want to
  • 00:23:07
    do things
  • 00:23:08
    i also heard a mentor mentors that's
  • 00:23:11
important the mentors and the sponsors
  • 00:23:12
really to learn from and to help you get
  • 00:23:15
    there
  • 00:23:16
what i do want to also mention is the
  • 00:23:18
number of roles and career opportunities
  • 00:23:20
within rbc so of course we have j would
  • 00:23:23
have shared a few but i also want to
  • 00:23:24
mention the the group risk management
  • 00:23:26
rules that we call grm um that's the
  • 00:23:29
group that has oversight for our
  • 00:23:31
    accredited adjudication process we have
  • 00:23:33
compliance an area there we have finance
  • 00:23:35
if you want to specialize marketing
  • 00:23:38
there's also roles strategy and analyst
  • 00:23:40
roles all of this is within banking and
  • 00:23:43
then as we mentioned there are those
  • 00:23:44
opportunities uh that you can actually
  • 00:23:47
you know work outside your country and
  • 00:23:48
sometimes without even leaving your home
  • 00:23:52
you can have a pan-caribbean rule and so
  • 00:23:54
that's so important so you know at rbc
  • 00:23:57
    we're a proud canadian financial
  • 00:23:59
    institution operating globally and
  • 00:24:01
hannah you mentioned that that that
  • 00:24:03
opens doors to so many possibilities and
  • 00:24:06
it really allows us to deliver to
  • 00:24:08
    deliver leading performance and really
  • 00:24:10
create values uh value for our clients
  • 00:24:13
    and our communities
  • 00:24:16
yeah and adding on to that i mean in you
  • 00:24:19
    mentioned so many different positions
  • 00:24:21
    just now with
  • 00:24:22
marketing there's also hr i mean we all
  • 00:24:25
have an ip team right awesome even
  • 00:24:27
forgotten nature hr which are the ones
  • 00:24:32
help with the hiring and all the
  • 00:24:34
    internal like employee relations so
  • 00:24:37
there is so much when it comes to a
  • 00:24:40
company and a business um you know you
  • 00:24:42
might be thinking banking but there's so
  • 00:24:44
    many different departments underneath
  • 00:24:45
that you can find a position in and if
  • 00:24:48
you know you are in a current role that
  • 00:24:50
you know might not spark you spark your
  • 00:24:53
    joy or right marie condo
  • 00:24:55
spark joy to you then you could also
  • 00:24:57
move into another department and then
  • 00:24:59
you know kind of how jade found your
  • 00:25:01
    stride within being a mortgage
  • 00:25:03
specialist and really being that person
  • 00:25:05
that when you know a young commandant
  • 00:25:07
buys their first home or buys their
  • 00:25:09
first peace land like you know that is
  • 00:25:11
so special right being a part of that
  • 00:25:14
    journey for somebody so
  • 00:25:16
it you're right finding your passion
  • 00:25:17
really finding the path that leads to
  • 00:25:19
    you
  • 00:25:20
    making that professional development or
  • 00:25:22
that career action plan you know
  • 00:25:24
sticking to those smart goals of you
  • 00:25:26
know this is what i'm going to be
  • 00:25:28
working on between the next three to six
  • 00:25:30
months and then this is the next
  • 00:25:31
qualification i want to go towards
  • 00:25:33
making a plan for yourself so that you
  • 00:25:34
can continue to grow as a professional
  • 00:25:37
really is so important and so now
  • 00:25:40
specific to cayman you know we've
  • 00:25:42
covered quite a bit of the roles within
  • 00:25:43
    rbc
  • 00:25:45
um and the banking industry as a whole
  • 00:25:47
specific to came out what does the
  • 00:25:48
    market look like
  • 00:25:50
    for somebody interested
  • 00:25:52
    in banking
  • 00:25:54
so i i want to start um you know the
  • 00:25:57
    opportunities that are
  • 00:25:59
you know there there's so much at rbc
  • 00:26:01
    and um
  • 00:26:02
while i want to i'll get to looking
  • 00:26:05
directly at cayman but i also want to
  • 00:26:07
speak because we are global global
  • 00:26:09
    global bank
  • 00:26:10
    and
  • 00:26:11
    an institution where we
  • 00:26:14
    look at delivering leading performance
  • 00:26:15
and our successes comes from the 89 000
  • 00:26:19
    plus employees who leverage their
  • 00:26:21
imaginations and their insight to really
  • 00:26:23
bring our vision our values uh to life
  • 00:26:26
um as canada's biggest bank and one of
  • 00:26:29
the largest in the world based on market
  • 00:26:32
    capitalization we have a diversified
  • 00:26:34
business model uh with a focus on
  • 00:26:36
    innovation and really just providing
  • 00:26:38
    that exceptional uh experiences to
  • 00:26:42
our 17 million clients in canada uh the
  • 00:26:45
us and 27 other countries so there's
  • 00:26:47
there's opportunity here and it came out
  • 00:26:49
but then there's opportunity once you
  • 00:26:50
get into rbc um uh that that go beyond
  • 00:26:54
    uh just
  • 00:26:55
our country and as for cayman we rbc has
  • 00:26:59
had a deep and meaningful presence here
  • 00:27:02
since 1964 and and this year marks 58
  • 00:27:06
years of rbc's commitment and dedication
  • 00:27:10
to the cayman island community our
  • 00:27:12
commitments are to the people of the
  • 00:27:14
cayman island is a key priority for us
  • 00:27:16
and one we bring to life through the
  • 00:27:18
    numerous and ongoing community service
  • 00:27:21
    endeavors including the meaningful
  • 00:27:23
impactful programs for you like the ucci
  • 00:27:26
scholarships and you know how we do
  • 00:27:29
business is as important as what we do
  • 00:27:31
and our successes is definitely defined
  • 00:27:34
by the long-term well-being of the
  • 00:27:36
people that we serve and in the places
  • 00:27:37
in which we operate and so rbc has an
  • 00:27:41
    industrious and enduring commitment to
  • 00:27:43
the successes of caymanians and the
  • 00:27:46
overall prosperity of a caribbean people
  • 00:27:48
and you know one of the things is that
  • 00:27:51
    we are
  • 00:27:52
we are constantly uh looking uh for for
  • 00:27:56
persons to fill positions and rules uh
  • 00:27:58
right from here right from within uh
  • 00:28:01
    our
  • 00:28:02
    community which we serve
  • 00:28:04
um we actually will be putting an ad in
  • 00:28:07
the paper i think just this friday with
  • 00:28:09
a few jobs that we have open but it's
  • 00:28:11
always our very first preference to hire
  • 00:28:14
caymanian first that's important to us
  • 00:28:16
and so at rbc you know our purpose is
  • 00:28:18
what we live and act on every day and
  • 00:28:20
it's really helping clients thrive and
  • 00:28:22
    our communities to prosper
  • 00:28:28
and i do know that um rbc is very much
  • 00:28:31
    of
  • 00:28:32
like i mentioned earlier a community
  • 00:28:35
community centric right so i see rbc out
  • 00:28:38
doing the 5k walks i see you doing all
  • 00:28:41
    of the different
  • 00:28:42
um community involvement and being a
  • 00:28:45
part of lots of not-for-profits i mean
  • 00:28:46
you partner with connect by nova thank
  • 00:28:48
you so much um so that we're able to do
  • 00:28:51
things like this for the community um
  • 00:28:54
and go out and do work readiness so rbc
  • 00:28:56
    really i mean you've
  • 00:28:58
been in operations for 58 years it's
  • 00:29:01
what you said and you can really tell
  • 00:29:03
    how important
  • 00:29:04
of a company it is within the community
  • 00:29:08
um and has built so many careers for
  • 00:29:10
communion so thank you so much for being
  • 00:29:13
    um
  • 00:29:14
    a part of
  • 00:29:15
growing our cayman community and really
  • 00:29:18
helping young humanians get their career
  • 00:29:19
started and building their careers so
  • 00:29:23
i want to hear your recommendations
  • 00:29:25
    for
  • 00:29:26
    um someone interested in banking
  • 00:29:29
    so
  • 00:29:30
i don't know who wants to start off but
  • 00:29:32
i think that i love hearing jades
  • 00:29:35
because it's so it's so refreshing right
  • 00:29:37
i mean i've been doing this for 30 years
  • 00:29:39
i'll be happy to piggyback off of it but
  • 00:29:41
jade why don't you kick us off
  • 00:29:46
    sure absolutely
  • 00:29:48
um a banking per uh career can you know
  • 00:29:52
can be very rewarding um and my
  • 00:29:55
    recommendations to anyone that's
  • 00:29:56
interested in the fields are to you know
  • 00:29:59
first start by deciding you know what
  • 00:30:01
    sector are you interested in
  • 00:30:03
uh or what role you think that you may
  • 00:30:05
be interested in and then going on to
  • 00:30:07
doing your research you can ask persons
  • 00:30:10
that are currently in the field or you
  • 00:30:12
can do some internet um search as well
  • 00:30:15
surround yourself with persons that are
  • 00:30:17
able to support your growth and that our
  • 00:30:20
understanding of your personal goals um
  • 00:30:22
and that it will require some sacrifices
  • 00:30:25
uh you know whether it is professionally
  • 00:30:27
or personally um and having a mentor
  • 00:30:31
whether it's informal or formal then
  • 00:30:33
maybe someone that you admire their
  • 00:30:34
worth ethic and you know how they've
  • 00:30:36
    progressed
  • 00:30:37
you can ask them to mentor you or you
  • 00:30:39
    can you can just uh
  • 00:30:41
watch and be vigilant and see some of
  • 00:30:43
the things that they do and incorporate
  • 00:30:44
    it into your own routines
  • 00:30:47
    and important
  • 00:30:49
very important is to to create a
  • 00:30:50
    personal development plan
  • 00:30:53
    this will
  • 00:30:54
    help you to
  • 00:30:56
succeed presently and in the future it
  • 00:30:58
should include something that will help
  • 00:31:00
    you to continue to grow
  • 00:31:02
and keeping track of your progress and
  • 00:31:04
    revisiting your personal development
  • 00:31:05
    plan regularly whether it's monthly
  • 00:31:08
quarterly depending on what that goal
  • 00:31:10
looks like and you know when you're
  • 00:31:11
    trying to achieve it by
  • 00:31:13
    um
  • 00:31:14
again you know being open to feedback
  • 00:31:16
and constructive criticism feedback is a
  • 00:31:18
gift and it's sometimes you should ask
  • 00:31:21
for it and if something is said to you
  • 00:31:23
and you you may not necessarily like
  • 00:31:25
what was said you know really sitting uh
  • 00:31:27
and thinking about it and saying you
  • 00:31:29
know what can i learn from this or you
  • 00:31:31
know where where could where could i
  • 00:31:33
have possibly went wrong or how can i
  • 00:31:35
    grow from this um and
  • 00:31:37
you know seeking out opportunities and
  • 00:31:39
not waiting for them and this is
  • 00:31:41
something that i've done as well um
  • 00:31:43
speaking to my manager about cross
  • 00:31:45
training or even using my own personal
  • 00:31:47
    time
  • 00:31:48
to go to someone else and say hey you
  • 00:31:50
know can you teach me a few things um so
  • 00:31:52
it's really about owning your career
  • 00:31:54
    journey and your development
  • 00:31:58
yeah that's well said jade i don't even
  • 00:32:01
    know how to
  • 00:32:02
to come behind that i i think i love
  • 00:32:05
what you'd have said it's about owning
  • 00:32:07
owning your career journey and and that
  • 00:32:09
is so important you know um
  • 00:32:12
i would just say you know also i
  • 00:32:14
    determine what you're passionate about
  • 00:32:16
you know what do you have an aptitude
  • 00:32:18
for what are you good at if you like
  • 00:32:20
working with people then maybe a
  • 00:32:21
client-facing role may be best for you
  • 00:32:24
so that's your teller your lenders our
  • 00:32:26
    sales and service professional roles
  • 00:32:29
    maybe you prefer working independently
  • 00:32:31
with minimal customer contact then a
  • 00:32:33
functional operation rule may be a
  • 00:32:35
    better option
  • 00:32:37
maybe you like to create a perhaps you
  • 00:32:39
    know you're a budding communicator or a
  • 00:32:41
    marketer that could be important
  • 00:32:44
maybe you enjoy solving problems or
  • 00:32:46
maybe your ingenuity can help us solve
  • 00:32:49
client issues and and help create you
  • 00:32:51
know those better client experiences for
  • 00:32:53
    us
  • 00:32:54
i would say just decide as you come in
  • 00:32:56
you know maybe is you want to specialize
  • 00:32:58
in a role you mentioned the finance rule
  • 00:33:00
the marketing rules we have insurances
  • 00:33:03
or maybe it's just general banking so i
  • 00:33:05
think thinking about it in that way you
  • 00:33:07
know will help you to narrow your focus
  • 00:33:10
i think another thing is important are
  • 00:33:11
your skills are you know attention to
  • 00:33:13
    detail that's important listening skills
  • 00:33:16
    oral and written communications those
  • 00:33:18
are important you know our roles at rbc
  • 00:33:20
    aren't just about traditional banking
  • 00:33:22
they're also about just being creative
  • 00:33:25
we promote that imaginative and we we
  • 00:33:28
encourage our employees to be bold and
  • 00:33:30
speak up and share their ideas that can
  • 00:33:32
create an impact you know around the
  • 00:33:34
world and i would say i heard you'd
  • 00:33:37
mention it around the mentoring you know
  • 00:33:38
    connect with individuals who have
  • 00:33:40
established in the banking industry talk
  • 00:33:42
to them you know ask them about what
  • 00:33:44
they enjoy about what they're doing and
  • 00:33:46
what they find challenging maybe in
  • 00:33:48
their current roles and um you know just
  • 00:33:50
    establishing that mentor relationship
  • 00:33:52
you know and set goals with your mentor
  • 00:33:55
based on what you want to accomplish
  • 00:33:58
and then maybe just finally you know you
  • 00:34:00
have choices of what buying setting you
  • 00:34:02
may want to work in some person start
  • 00:34:04
out at retail banking and they move to
  • 00:34:06
wealth management or investment or they
  • 00:34:08
move more to commercial or it may just
  • 00:34:10
be a credit union so you know you have
  • 00:34:12
    preference you
  • 00:34:13
choose the one that best suits your
  • 00:34:15
preference and and i think definitely um
  • 00:34:18
those are some good starting points uh
  • 00:34:21
that that you can take and hopefully
  • 00:34:22
    move forward with
  • 00:34:25
those are so many great points i don't
  • 00:34:27
    even know where to start
  • 00:34:29
um it was own your career make a
  • 00:34:31
    professional development plan
  • 00:34:33
    mentoring everything that was just
  • 00:34:37
    discussed is exactly what i
  • 00:34:39
    preach every single day
  • 00:34:41
amazing one other thing you know with
  • 00:34:43
the development plan as you go along
  • 00:34:45
um sometimes what i what i say to
  • 00:34:48
employees and i even to myself
  • 00:34:51
which are personal because i have one i
  • 00:34:52
have a personal development plan even
  • 00:34:54
though you know there's been years of
  • 00:34:56
    doing this because there's always
  • 00:34:57
something else to do you can bill you
  • 00:34:59
should always have a development plan
  • 00:35:00
that covers what you're doing in your
  • 00:35:02
current role okay because there's still
  • 00:35:04
skills that you want to build and
  • 00:35:06
sharpen and tweak as you go along and
  • 00:35:07
then of course it should be one that
  • 00:35:09
that's the future that you're building
  • 00:35:11
out to the north star so they're both
  • 00:35:13
working together at the same time
  • 00:35:15
simultaneously as you work on the
  • 00:35:17
current stuff you're also building out
  • 00:35:18
to the future so that's just another
  • 00:35:20
little tip that i always say to my
  • 00:35:22
employees and even to myself as i go
  • 00:35:24
along because i think jade said it you
  • 00:35:26
should always be preparing for the next
  • 00:35:28
role as you go along even while you're a
  • 00:35:30
student and in school you should be
  • 00:35:32
    getting ready for that
  • 00:35:34
and that's something as well that goes
  • 00:35:35
along with like even keeping your resume
  • 00:35:37
up to date in your current role
  • 00:35:40
because a lot of times when we're
  • 00:35:41
currently in our role and we love what
  • 00:35:43
we do and you know we're not thinking of
  • 00:35:45
that next step because we're enjoying
  • 00:35:46
    the now
  • 00:35:48
yes there might there might also be an
  • 00:35:50
    opportunity to grow
  • 00:35:51
within the company that you need to
  • 00:35:53
apply for right or you need to do an
  • 00:35:55
    internal
  • 00:35:56
application or even externally if you
  • 00:35:58
find another bank that's fantastic and
  • 00:36:00
you see an opportunity you can't lose
  • 00:36:01
out on right so even making sure that
  • 00:36:03
you write down everything that you do
  • 00:36:05
day to day because a lot of times yes
  • 00:36:06
there's a job description but there are
  • 00:36:08
a lot of other projects that we're
  • 00:36:09
interested in getting our hands on or
  • 00:36:11
you know learning experience kind of
  • 00:36:12
what jade mentioned going to your
  • 00:36:14
manager and saying what else can i help
  • 00:36:15
    with
  • 00:36:16
    taking that self initiative right
  • 00:36:18
learning those different skills like the
  • 00:36:20
different skill set um erica you
  • 00:36:22
    mentioned a couple of
  • 00:36:24
soft skills you know attention to detail
  • 00:36:26
    listening skills um someone who's
  • 00:36:29
self-motivated right all those are so
  • 00:36:30
important um in the long run as well
  • 00:36:34
just as important as those technical
  • 00:36:35
    skills in getting that degree
  • 00:36:37
    if you're a people person if you're a
  • 00:36:39
    communicator thinking about those
  • 00:36:41
    different
  • 00:36:42
um things of where you would fit best
  • 00:36:44
and where you would really thrive in
  • 00:36:47
    that role
  • 00:36:49
    so there's a there's a lot in there that
  • 00:36:51
    i think
  • 00:36:53
individuals or participants on this call
  • 00:36:55
    can really take
  • 00:36:56
    take away from
  • 00:36:58
the session and saying oh you know i
  • 00:36:59
think i'm going to put together a
  • 00:37:00
    personal development plan
  • 00:37:03
so just quickly touching a bit more on
  • 00:37:05
that for someone who doesn't know what a
  • 00:37:07
personal development plan would you be
  • 00:37:08
able to dive in a little deeper on how
  • 00:37:10
to get started with that or
  • 00:37:13
what can they do what are the questions
  • 00:37:14
    to ask yourself
  • 00:37:16
right so you would want to start out
  • 00:37:19
like i said maybe about the current role
  • 00:37:21
i i think it's always good to look at it
  • 00:37:23
you know if you're starting off as a
  • 00:37:25
student i think the audience uh
  • 00:37:28
    basically a
  • 00:37:29
university who may be on the call um you
  • 00:37:32
want to start thinking about what's next
  • 00:37:34
you know what do i need to build on
  • 00:37:36
what i've found um with with interviews
  • 00:37:40
sometimes it's getting in the door right
  • 00:37:42
so the person may be really smart but
  • 00:37:45
    they struggle
  • 00:37:46
    with trying to
  • 00:37:48
communicate that that'll get that across
  • 00:37:50
to the the person who's interviewing
  • 00:37:52
them and so maybe you need to work on on
  • 00:37:55
    building your communication skill and
  • 00:37:57
and you know so i say test yourself i
  • 00:37:59
can tell you um you know when i moved
  • 00:38:02
from being a teller and started to
  • 00:38:04
progress to the bank i had to go on i
  • 00:38:06
    didn't i don't think i could remember in
  • 00:38:08
youtube but there's so many different
  • 00:38:10
uh you know tips that you could just go
  • 00:38:12
on youtube and watch and observe um even
  • 00:38:15
    if you google
  • 00:38:16
the type of questions a lot of the
  • 00:38:18
questions now that um persons ask some
  • 00:38:20
    more behavioral questions the what-if
  • 00:38:22
questions what if this happened or what
  • 00:38:24
if you're faced with this type of
  • 00:38:25
challenge how would you react and so
  • 00:38:27
it's not necessary to test your
  • 00:38:28
knowledge we've already have your cv we
  • 00:38:30
can see that you're more than qualified
  • 00:38:32
we want to get to know you the person
  • 00:38:34
your background and so i think fine
  • 00:38:36
that's that could become part of your
  • 00:38:38
    some person's development personal
  • 00:38:40
development maybe they want to build
  • 00:38:41
their communication skills so they want
  • 00:38:43
to maybe look at a couple of videos test
  • 00:38:46
themselves maybe even sit with their
  • 00:38:48
lecture and have them test them or i
  • 00:38:50
don't know if that's even something
  • 00:38:51
within the university program that they
  • 00:38:53
allow so that's one part of it and then
  • 00:38:55
of course like you said um if you know
  • 00:38:57
that you want to specialize let's just
  • 00:38:59
say they wanted to go into compliance
  • 00:39:01
then you know that separate and apart
  • 00:39:03
from a degree you want to be applying or
  • 00:39:05
taking a course so that as you go in
  • 00:39:08
maybe you don't want to do an entry
  • 00:39:09
level you want to sort of come in as a
  • 00:39:11
junior person to incomply compliance so
  • 00:39:13
you want to sort of send in that okay i
  • 00:39:16
have the qualifications for entry level
  • 00:39:18
but i also have done an additional
  • 00:39:20
course to support the role that i really
  • 00:39:22
want to end up in at the end of the day
  • 00:39:24
so it's building out as you go along but
  • 00:39:27
like i said more focusing if you're
  • 00:39:28
working or you're already employed is
  • 00:39:30
looking at the skill where you're at and
  • 00:39:32
how you can build on that and then
  • 00:39:33
trying to figure out what else can i put
  • 00:39:35
in place so it's asking yourself those
  • 00:39:37
kind of questions what do i need to
  • 00:39:39
develop on to make me the best person
  • 00:39:42
for the role because i can tell you you
  • 00:39:44
know when we post positions sometimes we
  • 00:39:46
get up to 10 15 applicants so what's
  • 00:39:49
going to cost your cv first of all to
  • 00:39:52
stand out like you said very you need to
  • 00:39:54
    have an updated one
  • 00:39:55
and i like to do the you know with covet
  • 00:39:58
it hasn't allowed us to do a lot of face
  • 00:39:59
to face but we've done virtual and i
  • 00:40:01
think jay has said it you know how do
  • 00:40:03
you present yourself um how are you
  • 00:40:05
going to communicate and don't be afraid
  • 00:40:08
to speak up about the talents and
  • 00:40:11
    everything that you possess
  • 00:40:13
okay i think sometimes and i don't want
  • 00:40:15
to get into the female male thing
  • 00:40:17
because but sometimes we tend to play
  • 00:40:18
    down
  • 00:40:20
our talents or our skills and sometimes
  • 00:40:22
when you go into you know it's not about
  • 00:40:24
being um you know so assertive but i
  • 00:40:27
think you just need to be able to say to
  • 00:40:29
    the ensure that uh that
  • 00:40:32
    you get you get across
  • 00:40:34
a little bit more than what's on the cv
  • 00:40:36
like i said we have the cv that
  • 00:40:38
interview is to get to know you the
  • 00:40:40
person and being well prepared for that
  • 00:40:42
is really going to be important and
  • 00:40:44
    sometimes what
  • 00:40:45
actually um allows you to stand out from
  • 00:40:48
the other candidates who would have
  • 00:40:50
applied that's and that's so important
  • 00:40:53
you say that because you're right the cv
  • 00:40:55
    is that piece of paper
  • 00:40:56
right and you it's really just kind of
  • 00:40:58
an outline of your skills your
  • 00:40:59
    experience your education
  • 00:41:01
but really when you get to know the
  • 00:41:03
person is that interview setting or in
  • 00:41:05
that cover letter right um so really
  • 00:41:08
putting a bit of your personality being
  • 00:41:10
    prepared
  • 00:41:12
i like to tell people when they're
  • 00:41:13
getting ready for their interview to put
  • 00:41:15
together a brag sheet not something that
  • 00:41:17
you'll actually hand the interviewer but
  • 00:41:19
something that you're proud of your
  • 00:41:20
    accomplishments you know because you've
  • 00:41:22
done all these things throughout your
  • 00:41:23
life and throughout your career that you
  • 00:41:24
    should be able to share
  • 00:41:26
right um and be proud of them and that's
  • 00:41:29
really where that interview comes in
  • 00:41:30
right to talk about yourself and why you
  • 00:41:33
would be the best candidate for the role
  • 00:41:35
and like you said in that personal
  • 00:41:37
    development plan
  • 00:41:38
making sure that if you win are in that
  • 00:41:40
current position making sure that you're
  • 00:41:43
    efficient as possible if there's
  • 00:41:45
    maybe
  • 00:41:47
systems in place how can you make them
  • 00:41:49
more efficient right how can you find
  • 00:41:52
you know something that is not working
  • 00:41:54
as great as it could be and then seeing
  • 00:41:56
what can we do differently right we're
  • 00:41:58
in the 21st century we're in like a
  • 00:42:00
    digital age everything is changing
  • 00:42:02
left and right um there's a lot of new
  • 00:42:04
technologies that were in place i mean
  • 00:42:06
    everyone virtual interviews is one
  • 00:42:09
we're now all using teams and zoom and
  • 00:42:11
so um just post covid there's a lot that
  • 00:42:14
has changed another soft skill that
  • 00:42:16
    everyone's looking for some adaptability
  • 00:42:18
and flexibility you know really people
  • 00:42:20
who can roll with the punches come in
  • 00:42:23
and you know be able to
  • 00:42:25
adapt to change right because yeah i
  • 00:42:27
mean we don't know what's going to
  • 00:42:28
happen tomorrow right no one anticipated
  • 00:42:31
    coven
  • 00:42:32
    so
  • 00:42:33
    you're
  • 00:42:34
    so
  • 00:42:34
right about that you know the soft
  • 00:42:36
    skills
  • 00:42:37
i always say the persons you know a lot
  • 00:42:39
during covet we we started to talk a lot
  • 00:42:43
    about eq
  • 00:42:45
you know iq was important but eq is also
  • 00:42:48
important as well being self-aware and
  • 00:42:50
and understanding how do you interact
  • 00:42:52
and how do you engage and all those
  • 00:42:54
different pieces and so i'm definitely
  • 00:42:57
um you're going down the right path with
  • 00:42:58
    that
  • 00:42:59
    you know as we
  • 00:43:01
look to higher you know even within asia
  • 00:43:03
    we're looking differently we're looking
  • 00:43:05
differently at at the persons and rbc as
  • 00:43:08
you mentioned before we're a family
  • 00:43:10
    we're we're it's about togetherness it's
  • 00:43:12
    about
  • 00:43:13
uh bringing you know being diverse and
  • 00:43:15
inclusive as we move along and just
  • 00:43:17
persons being able to come to work and
  • 00:43:19
feel very comfortable about what they do
  • 00:43:21
we encourage a speak of culture
  • 00:43:24
i'm sure jay can share that with you
  • 00:43:26
that we want to hear your ideas there's
  • 00:43:29
no idea that's far-fetched we want you
  • 00:43:31
to think about those bold and different
  • 00:43:33
ways of just because we've been doing it
  • 00:43:35
like this for years doesn't mean that we
  • 00:43:36
can't do it better or differently so so
  • 00:43:39
that's the type of environment that that
  • 00:43:42
like i said for me that has kept me here
  • 00:43:45
and and and you know i just enjoy it and
  • 00:43:47
it's just been a pleasure to sit here
  • 00:43:49
this afternoon and really share this
  • 00:43:51
with the persons on the line that
  • 00:43:54
banking is is a little bit more you know
  • 00:43:56
we're not just a group of bored
  • 00:43:57
individuals we come in here to check
  • 00:43:59
    paper it's it's it's a it's it's a it's
  • 00:44:02
more than just a career you you
  • 00:44:05
    it's about
  • 00:44:06
    family and being comfortable and
  • 00:44:08
passionate and happy and like i said you
  • 00:44:10
wake up every morning you have to find
  • 00:44:11
    something that you enjoy
  • 00:44:13
    doing
  • 00:44:14
that's so important anna so important
  • 00:44:18
eric i wanted to touch on the point of
  • 00:44:20
the development plan and give a live
  • 00:44:22
    example
  • 00:44:23
uh so for myself you know i quickly
  • 00:44:25
    recognized that
  • 00:44:27
public speaking was an area that you
  • 00:44:28
know i needed to develop on on that was
  • 00:44:31
one of the first things that i included
  • 00:44:33
on my development plan um something as
  • 00:44:36
simple as being on this this call here
  • 00:44:38
with with all of you today would have
  • 00:44:40
scared me um when i started out and you
  • 00:44:42
know what i did was i identified that
  • 00:44:44
that was a challenge for me
  • 00:44:46
and i uh i would have challenged myself
  • 00:44:49
to put myself in the position where i
  • 00:44:51
would have to speak to persons more
  • 00:44:52
often and that helped me to develop and
  • 00:44:55
i would also host meetings um in my
  • 00:44:58
    sales role
  • 00:44:59
and then i would ask for feedback after
  • 00:45:01
each meeting from my monitor to say you
  • 00:45:03
know hey how did i do um on the meeting
  • 00:45:05
were there any areas of opportunities um
  • 00:45:08
you know what went well things like that
  • 00:45:10
    um
  • 00:45:11
that that was a live example for myself
  • 00:45:13
and it's something that i'm really proud
  • 00:45:15
    of
  • 00:45:18
that is that is awesome and thank you so
  • 00:45:20
much for speaking up and sharing that
  • 00:45:22
    because
  • 00:45:23
those are the things hannah that that
  • 00:45:25
you look for it's it's not just about
  • 00:45:27
the courses and other things it's about
  • 00:45:29
what do you want to develop and to make
  • 00:45:31
    you better
  • 00:45:32
at what you're doing or prepare you like
  • 00:45:35
i said for the future role and jade knew
  • 00:45:37
um very early on as as a
  • 00:45:40
    mortgage support associate supporting
  • 00:45:41
the specialist that she once she one day
  • 00:45:44
wanted to sit in that role and the role
  • 00:45:46
    that she sits in now
  • 00:45:48
she has to speak a lot she has to go and
  • 00:45:50
give presentations and you know all of
  • 00:45:53
    that stuff so imagine someone
  • 00:45:55
    who
  • 00:45:56
who was basically terrified of doing
  • 00:45:58
that but that's the role you want to go
  • 00:45:59
in so how are you going to prepare
  • 00:46:00
yourself for that position and and jade
  • 00:46:03
    i i think that's a great example and
  • 00:46:06
thank you so much for sharing it
  • 00:46:08
    yeah identifying those areas of
  • 00:46:10
    improvement and really recognizing that
  • 00:46:14
no this is my end goal and these are the
  • 00:46:17
different skills that it takes that i
  • 00:46:18
    need to
  • 00:46:20
    work on myself
  • 00:46:22
um and to get to that end position
  • 00:46:24
whether that is you know a role or
  • 00:46:26
whether that's um for their education or
  • 00:46:28
whatever that might be right and public
  • 00:46:30
speaking i can tell you it's not for
  • 00:46:31
    everyone
  • 00:46:32
right there's a lot of individuals who
  • 00:46:35
much rather be in back office roles you
  • 00:46:37
    know
  • 00:46:38
    but doing all the admin
  • 00:46:40
    and
  • 00:46:41
and that is fine right like public
  • 00:46:43
speaking is not for everyone um and jade
  • 00:46:47
i mean kudos to you for actually working
  • 00:46:49
on that because you knew you wanted to
  • 00:46:51
become a mortgage specialist right and
  • 00:46:53
that's a huge hurdle that not many
  • 00:46:55
people are willing to overcome um so
  • 00:46:58
really um kudos to you on that
  • 00:47:01
i been have been in hr an example i've
  • 00:47:04
been in hr started out as an intern then
  • 00:47:07
worked was an apprentice and then
  • 00:47:10
consultant now to running to connect
  • 00:47:12
    right i didn't i mean just in
  • 00:47:14
recruitment we do speak to a lot of
  • 00:47:15
people it is naturally in hr especially
  • 00:47:18
we're just people-centric we just left
  • 00:47:20
people talking to people whether it is
  • 00:47:22
about their day whether it's about what
  • 00:47:23
role they want to go into right so
  • 00:47:26
naturally public speaking had to be one
  • 00:47:27
of those skills that i had to work on
  • 00:47:31
um right so now doing all of these
  • 00:47:34
    trainings you know the more
  • 00:47:36
you put yourself out there the better
  • 00:47:37
you're gonna um get at those skills
  • 00:47:40
right so putting in those meetings in
  • 00:47:42
your calendar you know maybe sitting in
  • 00:47:44
on a meeting with you know your manager
  • 00:47:46
you know whatever that skill might be
  • 00:47:48
find ways in your day-to-day that you
  • 00:47:50
    can improve
  • 00:47:52
right and slowly maturely i mean it
  • 00:47:54
doesn't happen overnight but slowly you
  • 00:47:56
will get better at those and then that
  • 00:47:58
could be something that you could add
  • 00:47:59
    towards you know
  • 00:48:00
eq and like talk about in your interview
  • 00:48:02
setting um so before we close out i know
  • 00:48:05
we're coming almost to the end um
  • 00:48:08
    i'm gonna please
  • 00:48:10
yeah i know right i could sit and talk
  • 00:48:11
to you both all day here
  • 00:48:13
but i'm gonna open up the floor to
  • 00:48:15
anyone who has questions um so feel free
  • 00:48:17
to ask them in the chat box in the q a
  • 00:48:20
we would love to hear from you even if
  • 00:48:22
    it's you know personalized question
  • 00:48:23
about you and your career and what you
  • 00:48:25
want to ask um eric and jade would be
  • 00:48:28
happy to answer i know they're so
  • 00:48:30
passionate about the banking industry i
  • 00:48:32
can't even believe 40 minutes has passed
  • 00:48:34
already um but i'm going to ask a
  • 00:48:36
    question so
  • 00:48:38
    how can someone get
  • 00:48:40
    involved in learning more
  • 00:48:43
    where can they
  • 00:48:45
    so um
  • 00:48:46
i would say you can definitely uh check
  • 00:48:48
on our website um which is jobs.rbc.com
  • 00:48:53
forward slash this is really a great way
  • 00:48:55
to learn about what jobs are currently
  • 00:48:58
available uh you can select a cayman in
  • 00:49:00
the country category and actually go
  • 00:49:02
from there and i i would say uh consider
  • 00:49:06
    interning right that's just simply
  • 00:49:08
enough um an internship will definitely
  • 00:49:10
i'll give you the opportunity uh to
  • 00:49:12
    experience really firsthand
  • 00:49:14
um what it would be like working in the
  • 00:49:16
banking industry and really allow you to
  • 00:49:18
choose uh what banking career you
  • 00:49:21
possibly want to pursue even if it's
  • 00:49:23
only for a few months uh you will be
  • 00:49:26
able to get that exposure and really
  • 00:49:28
make some good connections which i feel
  • 00:49:30
will support uh you when you're ready to
  • 00:49:32
make that final decision on the career
  • 00:49:35
path that you want to move forward with
  • 00:49:36
and as my career and jade squares
  • 00:49:39
    definitely demonstrated you can have
  • 00:49:41
    many roles very early on
  • 00:49:43
on your biking career as you decide to
  • 00:49:45
move forward but the check out website
  • 00:49:48
like i said there's a number of rules
  • 00:49:49
available and remember we're a global
  • 00:49:51
company it's not just going to be came
  • 00:49:53
out it will be across the caribbean
  • 00:49:55
we're located in canada the us and 27
  • 00:49:57
other countries so check out our website
  • 00:50:00
and then of course the internship i
  • 00:50:01
think that definitely puts you very up
  • 00:50:04
close and personal to it and you can say
  • 00:50:06
you know what this is for me well maybe
  • 00:50:08
it's not for me and then you go from
  • 00:50:10
    there
  • 00:50:12
just a question here um for the
  • 00:50:14
    internships when is
  • 00:50:16
    when do your internships open
  • 00:50:19
or when is it so right now we are only
  • 00:50:22
interning with the ucci based on the the
  • 00:50:25
    scholarship programs that we are
  • 00:50:28
providing so like i said earlier we
  • 00:50:30
provide uh two spots right now we have
  • 00:50:33
one filled and so we're definitely
  • 00:50:35
looking forward to filling that other
  • 00:50:37
one so i don't know if any students are
  • 00:50:39
on the the call um so but you know it
  • 00:50:42
doesn't just have to be within within
  • 00:50:44
our our business i'm sure there are
  • 00:50:46
other companies out there that have
  • 00:50:47
    internships but
  • 00:50:49
    we
  • 00:50:49
right now we're carrying two openings
  • 00:50:52
and one of those have already been
  • 00:50:53
    filled
  • 00:50:55
yeah i can also touch on that question
  • 00:50:56
as well um so companies usually open up
  • 00:51:00
    their internship applications
  • 00:51:02
beginning of the year sometimes they
  • 00:51:03
start in january and then deadlines are
  • 00:51:05
    between april
  • 00:51:06
    um march and april
  • 00:51:09
    and then internships actually go
  • 00:51:10
throughout the summer mostly because a
  • 00:51:12
lot of students are in school during the
  • 00:51:14
year and then the summer months they're
  • 00:51:15
out of school so you know might as well
  • 00:51:17
    gain some valuable experience when
  • 00:51:19
    you're off school
  • 00:51:21
and internships are the perfect way to
  • 00:51:23
figure out whether that industry or that
  • 00:51:25
position is really for you right because
  • 00:51:27
you could one day do an internship
  • 00:51:30
    you know within
  • 00:51:32
the marketing team and then another time
  • 00:51:34
do it within the accounts team right so
  • 00:51:35
    really internships are that perfect
  • 00:51:38
place to kind of dip your toes into
  • 00:51:40
different areas see if it's the right
  • 00:51:42
    area for you
  • 00:51:44
if it is fantastic go from there if it
  • 00:51:46
isn't you know you could always do an
  • 00:51:48
internship in another area that you
  • 00:51:49
    might be able to find
  • 00:51:51
    um your light in so
  • 00:51:53
definitely keep an eye out for all the
  • 00:51:55
students that are on here for
  • 00:51:56
internships during the beginning of the
  • 00:51:57
year there are actually some still
  • 00:52:00
    looking um
  • 00:52:01
    for interns now
  • 00:52:05
just to put in there are the individuals
  • 00:52:08
    who come into us we
  • 00:52:09
we understand that they're students in
  • 00:52:11
school and so we work around a schedule
  • 00:52:13
like the individual we just bought on
  • 00:52:15
boarded uh they're only working three
  • 00:52:17
days out of the week from nine to one
  • 00:52:19
because of their class schedules so they
  • 00:52:21
have some more classes in the afternoon
  • 00:52:23
and so you know we're very very much so
  • 00:52:26
flexible and open to working along with
  • 00:52:28
our students we do understand of course
  • 00:52:30
    they're doing this while they're
  • 00:52:31
    attending university
  • 00:52:34
and that's so important that a company
  • 00:52:37
is flexible with a student's course
  • 00:52:39
schedule right because a lot of times
  • 00:52:40
students might think oh no i can't apply
  • 00:52:42
to that because it's the regular nine to
  • 00:52:44
five but really put yourself out there
  • 00:52:46
go get make that application because you
  • 00:52:49
    never know
  • 00:52:50
nowadays i can tell you many companies
  • 00:52:52
are much more flexible than you think we
  • 00:52:54
have definitely a lot of companies turn
  • 00:52:56
    to page
  • 00:52:58
postcovid because we all had to go into
  • 00:53:00
lockdown um yeah about that again but
  • 00:53:04
we've all returned to page and there's a
  • 00:53:05
lot more flexibility um and a lot more
  • 00:53:09
of an understanding in terms of culture
  • 00:53:11
and really helping you know individuals
  • 00:53:13
    whether
  • 00:53:15
in their personal life or in their um
  • 00:53:17
professional life as well so really put
  • 00:53:19
yourself out there kind of take that
  • 00:53:21
    step
  • 00:53:22
    um i mean
  • 00:53:23
the three of us are really examples of
  • 00:53:25
you know kind of just going going for it
  • 00:53:28
um and really building a career from you
  • 00:53:31
know that very first position thank you
  • 00:53:33
so much i'm gonna just double check here
  • 00:53:35
that we don't have any other questions
  • 00:53:38
um but if there are questions after this
  • 00:53:40
session please feel free to email me i'd
  • 00:53:42
be happy to reach out to eric and jade
  • 00:53:44
and get kind of get their feedback on it
  • 00:53:47
but thank you so much both of you for
  • 00:53:49
spending a bit of your afternoon with us
  • 00:53:50
we're so grateful that you were able to
  • 00:53:52
share some of your knowledge and your
  • 00:53:53
expertise on the industry i'm sure we're
  • 00:53:56
    definitely going to
  • 00:53:58
keep get you guys back to chat more
  • 00:54:01
but for anyone who's interested in
  • 00:54:04

  • 00:54:19
    our email address there
  • 00:54:20

a call at six two three one zero four
  • 00:54:25
one but are there any other closing
  • 00:54:27
    remarks
  • 00:54:28
    that you'd like to write
  • 00:54:30
i'll let jade start jade anything that
  • 00:54:32
you wanna share before we end
  • 00:54:35
no um well you know i just want to thank
  • 00:54:37
everyone for joining um you know and
  • 00:54:40
taking the time out to learn more about
  • 00:54:42
the banking industry and and getting
  • 00:54:43
some information because that really is
  • 00:54:46
a part of making that initial step you
  • 00:54:48
know listening in from the persons that
  • 00:54:49
are in the field and saying this is
  • 00:54:51
something that i you know would possibly
  • 00:54:53
be interested in uh so so that is a good
  • 00:54:55
step there um and i'm sure eric and i
  • 00:54:58
would be happy you know to answer any
  • 00:55:00
any questions that either of you would
  • 00:55:01
have um in terms of banking and that's
  • 00:55:03
more specific to you uh you know we are
  • 00:55:06
    very much um
  • 00:55:08
you know uh excited and and and keen on
  • 00:55:11
um developing young hey money and um
  • 00:55:13
    especially in the banking industry
  • 00:55:15
    um along their their journey
  • 00:55:18
    definitely and and i'll
  • 00:55:20
just be very briefly thank you so much
  • 00:55:23
for that jaden as you said um just thank
  • 00:55:26
you all for calling in today and and
  • 00:55:28
joining us and but just remember you
  • 00:55:30
know choose maybe what you're passionate
  • 00:55:31
about you know choose that path that
  • 00:55:34
that where you really want to um you
  • 00:55:36
know end up at the end of the day and i
  • 00:55:39
j you said something and i think i'm
  • 00:55:40
going to take that with me you know on
  • 00:55:42
your career path and your development
  • 00:55:45
you have to own it it's really up to you
  • 00:55:48
and and so those are the final parting
  • 00:55:50
    words
  • 00:55:52
and hannah i definitely have been a
  • 00:55:53
gracious host thank you so much for the
  • 00:55:55
invite and we definitely look forward to
  • 00:55:58
returning uh maybe for another exciting
  • 00:56:00
    segment
  • 00:56:02
yes thank you so much both of you and i
  • 00:56:03
hope everyone has a fantastic rest of
  • 00:56:06
    the afternoon
