    um it is the third leading cause of

    deaths in young people ages 15 to

    24 uh often times four actually boys are

    four times more likely to die from

    suicide than girls however girls are
  • 00:02:47
    more likely to attempt suicide than
  • 00:02:51
    boys guns are used in more than half of
  • 00:02:54
    Youth

    suicides and in the past 10 years

    suicide grades among young people ages

    10 to 17 have increased by More than

    70% treatment for teen depression and

    Suicidal Thoughts can save lives and

    and I think that it is important to talk

    about this topic as uncomfortable as it

    may be because talking about it brings

    to prevent it so on that note so what

    are some things that teens should know

    um about suicide for example like the
  • 00:03:56
    common causes um Etc so what exactly is

    suicide ideation could you please give

    us like a definition of

    that yes so suicidal ideation is a
  • 00:04:10
    really fancy way of saying thinking
  • 00:04:12
    about
  • 00:04:13
    suicide and when we talk about suicidal

    ideation there are there's passive
  • 00:04:21
    SI and active SI both can feel extremely
  • 00:04:28
    scary um pass of the SI is thinking like
  • 00:04:34
    feeling that you'd be better off dead or
  • 00:04:38
    not thinking about doing anything to
  • 00:04:42
    speed up that process right not thinking
  • 00:04:45
    about anything specific that would be
  • 00:04:49
    harmful to yourself but just that
  • 00:04:51
    thinking
  • 00:04:53
    of man if I don't wake up tomorrow I
  • 00:04:56
    wouldn't be bad right or or thinking I I
  • 00:05:02
    know that when I am driving I'm going to
  • 00:05:05
    make safe
  • 00:05:08
    choices but also thinking if I get in a
  • 00:05:11
    vicious car accident and don't make it
  • 00:05:14
    out alive I wouldn't be
  • 00:05:17
    mad so very deep very
  • 00:05:22
    distressing but when we're saying it

    just in general that's called passive SI
  • 00:05:28
    then we have something called active SI
  • 00:05:32
    and that is very very different that's

    when you're thinking about the specifics

    of harming yourself the how the when the
  • 00:05:40
    where um in active SI an individual

    might take actual steps to getting

    lethal means um with an intent to follow

    through so when we are determining

    suicidal risk we need to know does that
  • 00:06:02
    person have protective factors does that
  • 00:06:05
    person have uh a support system does
  • 00:06:09
    that person have family members that
  • 00:06:11
    they can align on best friends that they
  • 00:06:14
    can lean up do they have hopes goals
  • 00:06:19
    dreams
  • 00:06:21
    wishes for themselves for tomorrow right
  • 00:06:26
    so those are protective factors but but
  • 00:06:30
    if those protective factors are not
  • 00:06:32
    there and there's this sense of
  • 00:06:37
    hopelessness then those are some pretty
  • 00:06:40
    serious warning signs that warrant
  • 00:06:43
    attention and
  • 00:06:49
    hope yeah I've I've had some sibling
  • 00:06:52
    both of my siblings actually have been
  • 00:06:53
    to therapy because of uh suicidal
  • 00:06:57
    thoughts and they've both had passive
  • 00:07:00
    Suicidal

    Tendencies which so I know how like
  • 00:07:04
    stressful it can be to either be that
  • 00:07:06
    person or to be around a person like
  • 00:07:09
    that how stressful it is and how
  • 00:07:12
    difficult it can be um but I also know
  • 00:07:16
    how like warning signs are very
  • 00:07:18
    important and what to look out for so
  • 00:07:20
    what are some warning signs for
  • 00:07:23
    suicide that's a great question so I
  • 00:07:26
    like to break it down into talk behavior
  • 00:07:31
    and mood so warning signs of talk when
  • 00:07:36
    someone says that they don't want to be
  • 00:07:38
    a burden to others when they're talking
  • 00:07:41
    about self harm talking about feeling
  • 00:07:44
    trapped having no reason to live
  • 00:07:48
    experiencing unbearable pain um if their
  • 00:07:52
    talk is very
  • 00:07:55
    depressive um Behavior sleeping too much
  • 00:08:00
    sleeping too little aggression acting
  • 00:08:05
    recklessly um so aggression it could be
  • 00:08:08
    physical or could be like verbal like
  • 00:08:11
    being verbally aggressive and swearing
  • 00:08:13
    and belittling or just acting and
  • 00:08:16
    speaking in a way that isn't of their
  • 00:08:20
    character very very different acting
  • 00:08:23
    recklessly um increasing use of
  • 00:08:26
    substances withdrawing and isolating
  • 00:08:30
    Googling or searching ways to harm
  • 00:08:33
    themselves and one of
  • 00:08:36
    the most significant warning signs is
  • 00:08:41
    giving away prized possessions someone
  • 00:08:44
    does that then then that is a serious
  • 00:08:47
    serious cry for a break of
  • 00:08:49
    confidentiality and asking for help um

    but some warnings warning signs for mood
  • 00:08:56
    include depression loss of Interest in
  • 00:08:59
    preferred activities

    irritability rage increased anxiety or
  • 00:09:05
    feeling humiliation embarrass and
  • 00:09:10
    shame so those are talk behavior and
  • 00:09:13
    mood warning

    signs yeah I've definitely um like now

    that I'm really thinking about it I've
  • 00:09:22
    definitely uh feel like having that
  • 00:09:25
    knowledge is going to help us like
  • 00:09:27
    identify of a friend or that someone we
  • 00:09:31
    know might be experiencing something um
  • 00:09:34
    that maybe we or a professional person
  • 00:09:37
    could help them with um so what should
  • 00:09:40
    we do when we notice these warning signs

    like what's a way that we can bring that
  • 00:09:44
    up without being uh like insensible or
  • 00:09:48
    insensitive sorry sure so the first

    thing is

    that this

    is the first thing you should do

    encourage that person to speak to

    someone um encourage them to speak with

    their parents their school social worker

    counselor

    um and if they don't want to do it then

    this is the time in your life where it

    is okay to break that
  • 00:10:25
    confidentiality where it's okay to break

    that

    that trust so to speak because I would

    rather have a mad friend than a dead

    friend and so if you are genuinely

    worried for someone's

    well-being then talk to your

    parent then you go to the social worker

    or the school counselor and say

    something there are also different

    schools different kinds of programs that

    are set up where you can

    anonymously um report worrisome Behavior

    or um concerns about a peer um so make

    sure that you check in with your school

    Social Services Department to see what
  • 00:11:17
    resources are available for you also you

    can always call
  • 00:11:23

    deep spiral of like negative thoughts

    and go to really dark

    places you can text that number as well

    so you can call 988 or you can text 988

    for example you share a a bedroom with a

    sibling and you don't have a space to

    know about um and just to kind of Branch

    should try to cheer them up um like to

    do you think that we should try to um be

    that positive light in their life or go

    ask for a professional adult's help

    right away because I know sometimes

    people may be lashing out but they're

    just missing um that kind of human

    connection and loneliness so when is it

    appropriate to um seek professional

    help that is a really great

    question always be a friend always try

    to be that source of love and light and
  • 00:13:28
    support

    um and connection you're absolutely

    right start off with

    validating right either I know how this

    feels because you know maybe that is a

    lived experience that you share with

    that person or um I don't know how this

    feels for you but I am here

    and sometimes being there for them says

    means saying

    someone then I may right um so it's not

    talk to someone right now behind your

    back right have an open conversation let

    opportunity Unity to seek help

    when you know by when um and then you if

    they say tonight tonight I'll do it

    tonight and then they you know get to

    school the next day and still haven't

    talked to your mom you can say you know

    this is

    scary you know I I can't even imagine

    myself having to have that conversation

    with my mom I'm really worried though so

    if you're unable to tell your mom

    tonight then I think you or I or we are

    going to have to go to the social worker

    use when talking about suicide because

    the language we used to talk about

    suicide is incredibly

    important um it's not only important to

    know what language to use but it's also

    important to know what language to stay
  • 00:16:33
    away from so we're going to say that

    someone died by Suicide or ended their
  • 00:16:41
    life or took their life
  • 00:16:46
    um but we're not going to say pleed
  • 00:16:50
    suicide or committed suicide or
  • 00:16:54
    successfully whatever because that makes
  • 00:16:57
    it sound like a person had accomplished
  • 00:17:00
    something you know um committed makes it
  • 00:17:04
    sound like the person would broke the
  • 00:17:07
    law right um and it's not a criminal
  • 00:17:12
    act uh also we can say suicide attempt
  • 00:17:18
    attempted suicide attempted to end their
  • 00:17:21
    life but we're not going to say that the
  • 00:17:25
    person experienced a failed attempt or
  • 00:17:28
    an unsuccessful attempt failed and
  • 00:17:31
    unsuccessful makes it seem like the
  • 00:17:33
    person has failed for not being able to
  • 00:17:36
    kill themselves which is not the message
  • 00:17:39
    that we want to portray um so those
  • 00:17:44
    are ways that we could be there to
  • 00:17:48
    connect be there to support to uplift
  • 00:17:51
    and to not shame because language can be
  • 00:17:53
    really really important that old adage
  • 00:17:56
    sticks and stones may break my bone but
  • 00:17:58
    words will never hurt me is very
  • 00:18:02
    incorrect because words definitely
  • 00:18:07
    matter right thank you that's really
  • 00:18:10
    that's a really thorough answer and I'm

    glad that uh more people in the world is

    going to be able to be more um sensitive

    about the way that we talk about um

    like a topic that we shouldn't shy away

    from because I know there there can be a

    lot of controversy because it is a

    trigger for some people but um like

    stringing away completely from these

    types of conversations aren't healthy

    important to have difficult and UNC

    know um my friend lashed out and yelled

    me whether I deserved it or not I don't

    triggering We Can't Stop ourselves from

    feeling

    triggered but it's how intense the

    with that professional um like guidance

    adult so what is going to happen is the

    the adult in in the immediate

    immediate future is going to do a risk

    assessment to

    determine um whether what kind of

    support that person

    needs and then steps will be taken

    depending on the severity of risk of

    harm to self or others

    um and that the you know subsequent

    steps looks different depending on the

    outcome of that risk

    assessment often

    times you have to go to an ER for that

    evaluation but just because you're

    getting a psychological evaluation done

    or a risk assessment done it does not

    mean that you're going to be

    hospitalized it does not mean that you

    have to go impatient one does not equal

    other sure it's an option not going to

    lie right it's it's out there for those

    that need that level of support but

    there's also very very high likelihood

    outpatient setting yeah my my brother

    was actually uh had a psych evaluation

    at an ER and was considered an

    outpatient at one of the biggest uh

    mental health facilities where I live

    because of it but like we were all

    stressed but getting that help is so

    beneficial and I believe he truly is

    better for getting that

    help these are important conversations
