What's Happening In Turkey..

タイムライン
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
Major protests erupt across Turkey after President Erdogan arrests opposition leader Imamoglu, claiming he obtained his college degree illegally. This is seen as a politically motivated crackdown as Erdogan's popularity dwindles due to economic issues.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
The political landscape in Turkey features a diverse opposition including various ideologies, while Erdogan's coalition is dominated by ultra-nationalists. The opposition, despite its internal divisions, represents more than half the population against Erdogan's rule.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
As Erdogan resorts to mass arrests and asset seizures of Imamoglu, freedom of speech is increasingly suppressed. The president's actions reflect a fear of losing power amid declining public support driven by hyperinflation and other crises.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Imamoglu, facing arrest, vows to continue fighting against Erdogan's tyranny. While elections in Turkey exist, they are often rigged, and the current political environment highlights Erdogan's manipulation of the system for his advantage, relying on a solid foreign policy stance.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
Despite his declining popularity domestically, Erdogan gains support abroad for his foreign policy actions, particularly in Syria and Ukraine. Erdogan adeptly uses European leaders' concerns over NATO to minimize criticism of his domestic actions.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
Erdogan’s foreign policy acumen has allowed him to manipulate political dynamics, presenting himself as a key player in NATO while adeptly using refugees as leverage in negotiations with European nations regarding financial support.
- 00:30:00 - 00:35:00
The arrest of Imamoglu arrives just as he was anticipated to announce his candidacy for president, igniting widespread protests viewed by many as a political coup. Notably, journalists and social media users face crackdowns under Erdogan's regime.
- 00:35:00 - 00:40:00
Criticism from Western leaders over Turkey's political actions has been muted, highlighting the complicated geopolitical dynamics influencing Erdogan's actions and the reluctance to address human rights abuses in Turkey.
- 00:40:00 - 00:45:40
The protests across Turkey, fueled by anger over the arrest of Imamoglu and a pervasive climate of fear, suggest a mounting frustration among the populace against Erdogan's authoritarian grip on power, even as economic instability raises concerns for the regime’s future.

- 00:00:00let's get to Turkey there are major
- 00:00:03protests in every big city in the
- 00:00:07country right now and it all started
- 00:00:09when
- 00:00:10Rajipawan recognized uh his his
- 00:00:13influence and his prominence and his
- 00:00:14power was waning his and decided to
- 00:00:17arrest uh the most popular leader in the
- 00:00:21opposition parties uh the governor/
- 00:00:24mayor of Istanbul Immolu and he did this
- 00:00:27uh by claiming that him and I think what
- 00:00:3025 or 27 other uh class members of his
- 00:00:34actually got their um college degree
- 00:00:37through illicit means it's all [ __ ]
- 00:00:40they forced the university to revoke
- 00:00:43their certificates their diplomas and
- 00:00:45then they arrested 100 plus people
- 00:00:48initially uh that they had declared
- 00:00:50supporters of Imamolu it was all
- 00:00:53established uh it's all a lie for the
- 00:00:55record in Turkey you can't become
- 00:00:58president or run for president without a
- 00:01:00college degree I think it's a silly
- 00:01:01thing in the constitution to begin with
- 00:01:03but like
- 00:01:04and degree itself has been called into
- 00:01:07question on its uh legitimacy it's like
- 00:01:11a like a little it's basically like a
- 00:01:13open secret that he doesn't have a real
- 00:01:15diploma but it is a prerequisite to
- 00:01:17become the president and previously I I
- 00:01:20believe was you know uh the the premier
- 00:01:23initially and uh since Turkeyy's now a
- 00:01:25constitutional uh it went from a a
- 00:01:28parliamentary system to a presidential
- 00:01:29one now it's the president that has
- 00:01:31always needed it but now it's like the
- 00:01:33top office in the country because of a
- 00:01:35referendum
- 00:01:36that uh pushed for after uh implementing
- 00:01:40martial law after the coup anyway I
- 00:01:42don't want to get to too far into the
- 00:01:44weeds having said that this opposition
- 00:01:46is not united on ideology there are
- 00:01:49communists socialists Kurdish
- 00:01:52revolutionary groups there are even some
- 00:01:55nationalists in the opposition like
- 00:01:58breakaway parties from the ultra
- 00:02:00nationalist party it's a very unique
- 00:02:03opposition that comprises close to 50%
- 00:02:06if not a little bit over 50% of the
- 00:02:08country ardan's coalition government on
- 00:02:10the other hand is comprised of the
- 00:02:11ultraists uh the me and Ardan's own
- 00:02:15party however Adon's popularity has
- 00:02:18obviously dropped tremendously due to
- 00:02:20hyperinflation and many other issues and
- 00:02:22in that process Ardon recognizes that
- 00:02:24his time in office is coming to a close
- 00:02:27and fearful of his future prospects he
- 00:02:29is turning around and illegally
- 00:02:32arresting a whole bunch of people ardon
- 00:02:35also seized the assets of Imamola uh and
- 00:02:38claimed that they were also doing
- 00:02:39criminal activity and also arrested a
- 00:02:42bunch of people that were sympathetic to
- 00:02:43Imamola journalists and academics alike
- 00:02:45mass suppression is taking place in
- 00:02:48Turkey suppression has always been a
- 00:02:51tool that Adogan has utilized in the
- 00:02:53country for the record it's not new
- 00:02:55there's no free speech in the country
- 00:02:56adwan himself actually went to jail once
- 00:02:58ironically for reading a poem uh and he
- 00:03:01has loved the lack of free speech since
- 00:03:04he's risen to power and has been in
- 00:03:06power for the past 22 plus years its
- 00:03:10imperfect democracy seemingly sliding
- 00:03:13towards elected
- 00:03:17dictatorship istanbul's mayor is
- 00:03:20Echamola on Wednesday his wife filmed
- 00:03:23him getting ready to hand himself over
- 00:03:25to police waiting outside his home we're
- 00:03:28facing great tyranny he said but I will
- 00:03:31continue to fight against the person
- 00:03:33using this whole process as a tool
- 00:03:36against me
- 00:03:39the person he has in mind is President
- 00:03:41Erdogan in power for 23 years and winner
- 00:03:45of multiple elections though the press
- 00:03:48and all the instruments of state seem to
- 00:03:50have succumbed to his Yeah that's why I
- 00:03:53say listen you need to understand
- 00:03:55something turkish elections are usually
- 00:03:57not fair but they still are real
- 00:04:00elections and it's important to
- 00:04:01understand that regardless of what
- 00:04:03people say because it's important to
- 00:04:04understand that he does have popular
- 00:04:06support he will rig the elections in his
- 00:04:10favor by using the media and through
- 00:04:12other methods of political suppression
- 00:04:13against his opposition but at the end of
- 00:04:15the day there is real support at least
- 00:04:18across the 50% boundary for him and his
- 00:04:21coalition that's why he had to make a
- 00:04:22coalition by the way with Manip having
- 00:04:24said that right now ironically enough
- 00:04:27this is probably the most popular he has
- 00:04:30ever been in terms of foreign policy
- 00:04:33especially with the Ukraine stuff
- 00:04:35especially with Syria and yet this is
- 00:04:37the least popular he's been in the
- 00:04:39country so I think that's the reason why
- 00:04:41he used the u the goodwill that he got
- 00:04:44from European leaders who were like "Oh
- 00:04:46my god you did a fantastic job with uh
- 00:04:49with the Syria stuff you packed that
- 00:04:51[ __ ] up so neatly and you're saying you
- 00:04:54know you're going to support Zilinski."
- 00:04:56He used the the lack of interest that
- 00:05:00Western powers will have in in basically
- 00:05:02saying "What the [ __ ] are you doing to
- 00:05:04Ardon?" And I haven't really seen a lot
- 00:05:06of Western leaders criticize him for
- 00:05:08these insane actions by the way but he
- 00:05:11used that moment of opportunity to
- 00:05:13present uh to to basically engage in
- 00:05:16political repression supercharged in a
- 00:05:19way that is even unique to him and he's
- 00:05:21been doing this for a very long time so
- 00:05:23if you're wondering why European nations
- 00:05:25are not talking about this is because he
- 00:05:28has a tremendous amount of support from
- 00:05:31European leaders right now because he's
- 00:05:34like saying he's the protectorate of
- 00:05:36NATO he's the protector of NATO at a
- 00:05:38time when Donald Trump is undermining
- 00:05:39NATO right ardon has always used his
- 00:05:44foreign policy acumen to his advantage
- 00:05:47to manipulate European politics whether
- 00:05:50it be uh engaging in the destabilization
- 00:05:53of Syria and then you know having his uh
- 00:05:57armed militants like his Salafus brigade
- 00:06:00overtake alongside HDS the Syrian
- 00:06:02government and occupy it and then
- 00:06:04linking up with HDS or whether it be
- 00:06:06entertaining uh 6 million Syrian
- 00:06:09refugees
- 00:06:10previously that escaped uh the Syrian
- 00:06:13civil war and offering them uh refugee
- 00:06:17status in the country with the only
- 00:06:20purpose not because he's a humanitarian
- 00:06:22mind you but because one he wants to be
- 00:06:24the leader of the ummah the entire
- 00:06:26Muslim world he loves that he loves when
- 00:06:28people glaze him for that but more
- 00:06:30importantly than that he did that
- 00:06:32specifically so he can use the refugees
- 00:06:34as a bargaining chip one to directly get
- 00:06:37funds from European countries that he
- 00:06:39will fill his coffers his own personal
- 00:06:41coffers with which is exactly what he
- 00:06:43did and two because he can use those
- 00:06:45refugees as a threat anytime Ardon feels
- 00:06:50stress from European leaders he'll say
- 00:06:52"I'm going to drive 6 million Syrian
- 00:06:54refugees to the Greek border and they're
- 00:06:56going to be your problem." Now make no
- 00:06:58mistake while I do agree with the
- 00:07:01actions and I certainly find myself at
- 00:07:03odds with the coalition's opinion on uh
- 00:07:07the refugee status of Syrian migrants
- 00:07:09because I ultimately believe in
- 00:07:12humanitarian aid and opening up your
- 00:07:15borders to people who are escaping
- 00:07:17political instability and violence i
- 00:07:19still recognize where Ardan is coming
- 00:07:21from what the motives are here having
- 00:07:24said that because of the uh incredible
- 00:07:27amount of support that he's garnered in
- 00:07:29the past couple of months due to his
- 00:07:32actions in Syria I think he saw an
- 00:07:34opening to pounce on his opposition that
- 00:07:38is very likely going to thwart him and
- 00:07:42kick him out of power authoritarian will
- 00:07:45[Music]
- 00:07:48but the arrest of Mayor Imamolu looks
- 00:07:51like a new low this evening he was taken
- 00:07:54to Istanbul's state security court with
- 00:07:57around a hundred others accused of
- 00:08:00corruption and supporting terrorism and
- 00:08:02it may be no coincidence that tomorrow
- 00:08:05he was due to be nominated as a
- 00:08:07presidential candidate
- 00:08:10himself this was the coastal city of
- 00:08:12Ismir last night along with Istanbul and
- 00:08:16Anchora it has an elected mayor from the
- 00:08:18main opposition party turkey has a
- 00:08:21history of military coups but these
- 00:08:24protesters see what's happening as a
- 00:08:26political coup turkeykey's president
- 00:08:28going to war with his main political
- 00:08:32rival mr erdogan is Yeah he cooked them
- 00:08:35before he even could run also I do want
- 00:08:38to point this out elon Musk claims to
- 00:08:40defend free speech but today he enables
- 00:08:42authoritarian censorship in Turkey by
- 00:08:43blocking access to critical accounts on
- 00:08:45X this is a global issue we call on
- 00:08:46journalists activists and the public
- 00:08:48worldwide to hold him accountable today
- 00:08:50while Twitter is uh one of the few
- 00:08:53outlets that people can show political
- 00:08:55discontent uh and Elon Musk is gladly
- 00:08:58gladly banned opposition accounts like I
- 00:09:02said earlier the Turkish government has
- 00:09:03also stopped most broadcasters from
- 00:09:06showing the protest and the discontent
- 00:09:09altogether turkish chatters i told you
- 00:09:11European leaders are weak right now and
- 00:09:14they rely on Adon they're worried about
- 00:09:16Trump they're stuck between a rock and a
- 00:09:18hard place they will never criticize
- 00:09:19Ardolan right now america I don't think
- 00:09:21gives a single [ __ ] about Rajipon anyway
- 00:09:24he can do whatever he wants trump likes
- 00:09:26him he said he will retire in 2028 but
- 00:09:30he could engineer an early election or a
- 00:09:33constitutional change to stay on
- 00:09:36presenting himself as an alternative to
- 00:09:38this week's unrest
- 00:09:43they are trying to create turmoil on our
- 00:09:45streets using an anti-corruption
- 00:09:48operation as an excuse we won't allow a
- 00:09:51hand oh my god Ardon is such a goddamn
- 00:09:55chameleon that he went from uh liberal
- 00:09:59uh Euro focused uh privatizer pro-
- 00:10:02capitalist privatizer to expanding the
- 00:10:05welfare state at times when necessary to
- 00:10:08uh Islamist who has never really changed
- 00:10:11trajectory from being an Islamist to to
- 00:10:15now
- 00:10:16panuranist panuranist
- 00:10:19uh uh who will also restore the
- 00:10:22caliphate he's going to restore the
- 00:10:23caliphate and he's a panerist at the
- 00:10:25same time he is literally everything but
- 00:10:28more importantly he is a watermelon
- 00:10:31salesman he's done it all he's been
- 00:10:34everything you could call him at times a
- 00:10:36social democrat you could call him a
- 00:10:38European liberal and a and a privatizer
- 00:10:41of state enterprise that's how he came
- 00:10:42into office initially you can do the
- 00:10:45political compass memes for him now his
- 00:10:47administration is pro Kurdistan not
- 00:10:50really but it's it's wild it's wild that
- 00:10:54he is both simultaneously an ultraist
- 00:10:57and a panerinist but also uh also saying
- 00:11:01you know we're going to get Abdullahan
- 00:11:03out and he's going to do a call he's
- 00:11:06going to tell all the Kurds to to put
- 00:11:07down their arms to lay down their arms
- 00:11:09he's everything he's everything and more
- 00:11:12that's why he's been in power for 22
- 00:11:14plus years handful of incompetent
- 00:11:17ambitious individuals to attack the
- 00:11:19peace to provoke our people to terrorize
- 00:11:23and cause worry in Turkey ekram Imamolu
- 00:11:27who is 54 won't go quietly telling
- 00:11:30counterterrorism police that he faces
- 00:11:32unimaginable slanders against him he's
- 00:11:35also been stripped of his university
- 00:11:37degree which prevents him from running
- 00:11:40for president though his party leader
- 00:11:42who now sleeps in the mayor's office
- 00:11:46says a proxy could run instead
- 00:11:50if he is unable to apply then somebody
- 00:11:53else will be a candidate instead and
- 00:11:55they will win if he faces a political
- 00:11:57ban we will turn the next election into
- 00:12:00a referendum to remove it and set him
- 00:12:02free turkeykey's president was today
- 00:12:05attending to affairs of state a 21st
- 00:12:08century sultan who has put his country
- 00:12:10on the geopolitical map mediating in
- 00:12:14conflicts from Syria to Ukraine and
- 00:12:17unlikely to face much push back from
- 00:12:19President Trump during a trip to
- 00:12:21Washington planned for next
- 00:12:24month istanbul is home to 16 million
- 00:12:28people the question is whether these
- 00:12:30protests on behalf of their mayor will
- 00:12:33grow or whether Mr uh the one I mean
- 00:12:36dude look at this this [ __ ] happens in
- 00:12:39in Serbia this [ __ ] happens in Turkey
- 00:12:43this [ __ ] happens in France it happens
- 00:12:45in South Korea it never comes close to
- 00:12:48this in a lot of Western nations like it
- 00:12:51never happens like this in the United
- 00:12:53States of America and I think that's
- 00:12:56part of the real reason why you never
- 00:12:57see like the the level of political
- 00:13:00repression that these administrations
- 00:13:01engage in here in the United States an
- 00:13:05is now so ruthless that he orders
- 00:13:07whatever it takes to reassert control is
- 00:13:11the opposition a better alternative for
- 00:13:12Turkey yes while I certainly have my
- 00:13:15criticisms of the opposition especially
- 00:13:17like the leadership roles within the
- 00:13:19opposition I would yes 100% yes first of
- 00:13:23all even if they're corrupt they're not
- 00:13:26going to be able to be as corrupt as
- 00:13:27Ardon it is virtually impossible for
- 00:13:30them to be as bad as Ardon and as
- 00:13:32corrupt as Ardon it's just not possible
- 00:13:36because he is he is one of the best in
- 00:13:38the world at both of those things and
- 00:13:41when I say that I mean like like it's
- 00:13:43like him Vladimir Putin you know what I
- 00:13:44mean like there's a hand few there's a
- 00:13:47handsome like few people on this planet
- 00:13:49that are that are able to command such
- 00:13:52large economies as if as if it is their
- 00:13:55own personal uh as if it's their own
- 00:13:58personal wallet like I always say when
- 00:14:01people talk about North Korea right
- 00:14:02they're like "Oh it's actually entirely
- 00:14:04because of the Kim family and like their
- 00:14:07corrupt dynasty and that's the reason
- 00:14:08why the people are so poor." It's like
- 00:14:10no it's the sanctions right but with
- 00:14:13Turkey Turkey truly is one of the few
- 00:14:17places where you can make the argument
- 00:14:18that like one family and their besties
- 00:14:22are almost entirely responsible for all
- 00:14:25of the pain and all the struggle that
- 00:14:28people experience now having said that
- 00:14:30has he also been responsible for the
- 00:14:32expansion of the welfare state
- 00:14:34absolutely it's interesting because
- 00:14:36people get mad at that and they're like
- 00:14:37"Oh he's just like winning votes." I
- 00:14:39don't have an issue with that the issue
- 00:14:41I have is that he has created this
- 00:14:43political machine that basically relies
- 00:14:44on people going out and voting for him
- 00:14:46and that's the only way that you can get
- 00:14:48the financial aid necessary to survive
- 00:14:51while also simultaneously doing the
- 00:14:53worst building practices as we saw some
- 00:14:56of the implementation of of said awful
- 00:14:59business practices and rampid corruption
- 00:15:00within the party structure that had a
- 00:15:03devastating impact on the infrastructure
- 00:15:06in the aftermath of the massive
- 00:15:07earthquake in Turkey which he still won
- 00:15:09an election afterwards
- 00:15:10after that violence
- 00:15:19he's u one of the protesters were doing
- 00:15:21push-ups in front of the cops as they
- 00:15:23were peppering him with uh with less
- 00:15:26than lethal bullets
- 00:15:31they're literally shooting him
- 00:15:34[Music]
- 00:15:40[Applause]
- 00:15:44this is why we say AAB is universal by
- 00:15:46the way and just finally I mean Donald
- 00:15:48Trump is rearranging the geopolitical
- 00:15:50furniture everywhere with his actions
- 00:15:53and his pronouncement is President
- 00:15:55Erdogan taking any inspiration from the
- 00:15:57way that President Trump is behaving uh
- 00:16:00yes i think President Trump's return to
- 00:16:02the White House had a huge impact on on
- 00:16:04the way foreign autocrats behave in the
- 00:16:06past there was slight concern in Ankara
- 00:16:09uh about what how Washington would might
- 00:16:12react to to these repressions not
- 00:16:14anymore so that's number one number two
- 00:16:17is Trump's return to the White House has
- 00:16:19created this vulnerability among
- 00:16:21European capitals they think that they
- 00:16:23are now all alone trying to defend
- 00:16:25themselves yeah and Ardan has the second
- 00:16:28largest military in NATO and the more he
- 00:16:31says he's pro- Ukraine the more European
- 00:16:34leaders will go okay you can do whatever
- 00:16:35you want we don't like it we think
- 00:16:38you're barbaric but we can't say
- 00:16:40anything against an aggressive Russia
- 00:16:42without American help which forced them
- 00:16:45to engage Ardan so there is now a
- 00:16:48political climate international
- 00:16:49political climate where the west really
- 00:16:52doesn't want to see like I as much as I
- 00:16:54despise Ardon the one thing that I will
- 00:16:56always give him credit for uh even
- 00:16:58though I don't want to is the fact that
- 00:17:01he is pretty conniving he is very
- 00:17:04conniving he's a very smart dude in both
- 00:17:08maintaining a level of support no matter
- 00:17:12what from his base and also very good at
- 00:17:16managing being a regional power and the
- 00:17:20second largest uh and and maintaining
- 00:17:22the second largest standing military in
- 00:17:25NATO you don't stay in power for 22 plus
- 00:17:27years without doing that i would say
- 00:17:29that the only difference between um like
- 00:17:32Russia the only difference between
- 00:17:33Russia and Turkey at at this stage
- 00:17:35basically is that the opposition
- 00:17:37leadership is like an eclectic group of
- 00:17:39people that don't have any sort of like
- 00:17:41real ideological coalition beyond
- 00:17:43overthrowing Adon um but they are still
- 00:17:46a real opposition and they represent uh
- 00:17:49the the real 50 plus% of the population
- 00:17:53as opposed to in Russia the opposition
- 00:17:55is completely controlled they are also
- 00:17:58uh at the behest of Vladimir Putin
- 00:18:00that's the major difference he faces
- 00:18:02charges that include graft and aiding a
- 00:18:04terrorist group imamulu denies all
- 00:18:06allegations against him
- 00:18:08his Republican People's Party condemns
- 00:18:10the move as politically motivated and
- 00:18:12say other prominent opposition figures
- 00:18:14were also taken into custody very often
- 00:18:17there is no rule of law in Arduans
- 00:18:19Turkey and currently Turkeykey's jails
- 00:18:21are full of Ardan's political opponents
- 00:18:24turkish constitution has a very vague
- 00:18:27terrorism uh concept so hey Americans
- 00:18:31when I said America is turkifying at an
- 00:18:34alarming rate this is what I was talking
- 00:18:36about by the way to to all the dumbass
- 00:18:38like hogs that come in here and watch me
- 00:18:40to be like you're so stupid Assan it's
- 00:18:42based It's based to like call anything
- 00:18:44and everything terrorism and like jail
- 00:18:47people this is the product you like that
- 00:18:50turkey's government denies claims of
- 00:18:51targeting its political rivals
- 00:18:55but on Friday Erdogan warning against
- 00:18:57illegal calls from the opposition for
- 00:18:58protests saying "We will not give into
- 00:19:00vandalism or street
- 00:19:03terrorism." Turkey's interior minister
- 00:19:05confirming dozens of protesters have
- 00:19:07been
- 00:19:08arrested and and to the Turks who are
- 00:19:11anti-Kurd just like I tell Israelis who
- 00:19:13are anti-Palestinian and not anti-ionist
- 00:19:16this chatter is correct this behavior
- 00:19:18isn't new ardon has routinely jailed
- 00:19:19Kurdish politicians on a regular basis
- 00:19:21throughout his tenure exactly when you
- 00:19:23don't recognize that that [ __ ] is
- 00:19:25completely unacceptable it will expand
- 00:19:27to your favorite political leader and it
- 00:19:30will expand to you as well one day and
- 00:19:32if you don't actually immediately start
- 00:19:34protesting against that [ __ ] when it
- 00:19:36happens you are going to be facing a
- 00:19:38challenge that you will not be able to
- 00:19:41overcome you're misleading people on
- 00:19:43Ardan the opposition can't run this
- 00:19:45country more than Turkey turkey gets
- 00:19:47better every day i guess US as well
- 00:19:49ardan isn't even tiny bit anti- Kurd
- 00:19:51you're misleading people on Ardan oh
- 00:19:53Meleet hometown because he's capable to
- 00:19:55reach agreement with any group of the
- 00:19:57country yeah we got Ardo goat supporters
- 00:20:30[Laughter]
- 00:20:38is the opposition anti-Israel and
- 00:20:40aesthetic no ardan is anti-Israel and
- 00:20:42aesthetic if there's one guy who
- 00:20:45actually has the power to shut off the
- 00:20:48entirety of the electricity grid of
- 00:20:50Israel it's Rajip Ardon the very fact
- 00:20:53that it has not happened means that his
- 00:20:55opposition to Israel is purely aesthetic
- 00:20:58don't ever tell an Ardan supporter that
- 00:21:01reality by the way they will get so mad
- 00:21:03they'll be like "No what are you
- 00:21:04saying?" I remember when Ardan himself
- 00:21:07was uh not so pro- Hamas as he is now
- 00:21:10okay just remember that and same goes
- 00:21:12for the opposition too and same goes for
- 00:21:15all the all the weird fascists who hate
- 00:21:17Arabs in Turkey because they think
- 00:21:19they're superior to Arabs in Turkey they
- 00:21:21think like "No no you don't understand
- 00:21:23the Western world will welcome us with
- 00:21:25open arms because we are different than
- 00:21:27the Arabs we're a Western nation." Yeah
- 00:21:29right dude europeans don't even like
- 00:21:31Polish people and those mothers are
- 00:21:33Christian what are you talking about
- 00:21:35they literally think you are exactly the
- 00:21:37same as Arabs you're Muslim that's it
- 00:21:39you can say you're an atheist all day
- 00:21:41every day no American will ever treat
- 00:21:44you no Westerner will ever ever look at
- 00:21:46you as a a uh true European person you
- 00:21:51are no different than the Hindutva
- 00:21:54fascists here in the United States of
- 00:21:56America that are uh proTrump that are
- 00:21:58going to inevitably be deported by our
- 00:22:00fascist government every time I say this
- 00:22:03Turkish people clip this [ __ ] and start
- 00:22:06posting it on every forum and they get
- 00:22:09so mad at me initially in the immediate
- 00:22:11aftermath of October 7 I yelled at the
- 00:22:13Turkish chatters who were telling me
- 00:22:14like you know that they're pro- Israel
- 00:22:16and Hamas Palestine whatever and I told
- 00:22:19him that they're dogs uh that they are
- 00:22:22their status will never be elevated in
- 00:22:24the eyes of Europeans no matter how hard
- 00:22:26they present themselves as pro-Israel
- 00:22:28and how hard they say that they're
- 00:22:30better than Arabs and they got so mad at
- 00:22:32me but you want to know something that's
- 00:22:34very funny every single group that
- 00:22:36posted that clip and got mad at me is
- 00:22:39now openly pro Palestine every single
- 00:22:42one of those leaders of the individuals
- 00:22:44that posted those clips every single one
- 00:22:47of them is now unconditionally pro
- 00:22:50Palestine many of their leaders
- 00:22:52literally lied about their initial
- 00:22:55defense of Israel if you ask them about
- 00:22:57it they'll go "Oh what do you mean?" "No
- 00:22:59I was never pro- Israel what are you
- 00:23:00talking about yeah what
- 00:23:11happened
- 00:23:27anyway posting on X that at least 37
- 00:23:30social media users were also detained
- 00:23:31for sharing posts inciting public hatred
- 00:23:57[Laughter]
- 00:23:59top is turning Turkey into a This is the
- 00:24:02funniest thing like Israel CS and all
- 00:24:05these people in Israel are so stupid
- 00:24:09that they think that Rajepta Ardan is
- 00:24:11like anti-Israel so they're complaining
- 00:24:14about Rajypta Adon they're saying like
- 00:24:16"Oh he's turning he's a Islamist he's a
- 00:24:18Islamist he's turning in Turkey into an
- 00:24:21authoritarian Islamist nation." And it's
- 00:24:23kind of funny that they're saying this
- 00:24:25because they themselves are so stupid
- 00:24:28that they don't understand the the
- 00:24:30dynamic between Adon and Israel I guess
- 00:24:32or they're deliberately doing it in an
- 00:24:34effort to give Adon some ass covering i
- 00:24:37guess there is virtually no politician
- 00:24:41in Turkey that is like pro-Israel okay
- 00:24:43openly pro-Israel at least turkey as a
- 00:24:46nation state is super anti-Israel turkey
- 00:24:49on the other hand is a NATO nation state
- 00:24:52turkey is under the NATO banner turkey
- 00:24:55is a NATO country turkey has the second
- 00:24:56largest standing military in NATO turkey
- 00:24:58has American nukes in the inik base in
- 00:25:02Turkey turkey has missile systems
- 00:25:04initially during the cold war that were
- 00:25:05directed at the USSR this is how the
- 00:25:07Cuban missile crisis started it's
- 00:25:09ridiculous to assume that this country
- 00:25:11would not be pro- Israel in action ardan
- 00:25:14is taking a Turkish state with
- 00:25:16scientific cultural technological and
- 00:25:17economic capabilities and destroying
- 00:25:19eroding the legacy of Altitude who built
- 00:25:20a progressive and prosperous Turkey
- 00:25:21let's hope for better days at Ekamolo
- 00:25:24this is Israel's Minister of Defense
- 00:25:26ekamolo's account responds and says "I
- 00:25:28am returning your statement which
- 00:25:30insults the flag of the Republic of
- 00:25:31Turkey and the president as it is we
- 00:25:34have no need to receive lessons on
- 00:25:35democracy and law from those responsible
- 00:25:37for the suffering and deaths of
- 00:25:38countless innocents including children
- 00:25:40yes a brighter future is indeed possible
- 00:25:42when Palestine is free." There you go if
- 00:25:45you think that like any popular Turkish
- 00:25:48politician is going to be like "Yeah I
- 00:25:50love Israel." You are deluded you don't
- 00:25:53know anything about Turkish politics
- 00:25:56you're out of your freaking mind every
- 00:25:58single one of these donkeys that
- 00:26:00initially were against the Ardan regime
- 00:26:03or even within the Ardan regime that
- 00:26:06despise Arabs initially said lightly
- 00:26:10pro-Israel [ __ ] there were even
- 00:26:12politicians that went in front of the
- 00:26:14Majis and said "If you like Palestine so
- 00:26:18much why don't you go fight for the
- 00:26:20Arabs yourself i'll send you there."
- 00:26:23Every single one of them went back and
- 00:26:26are now unconditionally pro Palestine
- 00:26:29because unlike the Gulf nation states I
- 00:26:32guess actually very similar to the Gulf
- 00:26:34nation states I will say where the
- 00:26:37public is incredibly pro Palestine the
- 00:26:40politicians have to also be incredibly
- 00:26:43pro Palestine it's exactly like the Gulf
- 00:26:45States when you think about it i was
- 00:26:48going to say unlike the Gulf nation
- 00:26:49states uh where the public is pro
- 00:26:51Palestine but the the leaders are not no
- 00:26:54it's the same dynamic every single
- 00:26:56country would love for the Palestinians
- 00:26:59to be completely wiped out they would
- 00:27:01dream of a future where they don't have
- 00:27:02to you know they don't have to deal with
- 00:27:04this any longer where they can just like
- 00:27:06openly be aligned with Israel but the
- 00:27:08only reason why they have to maintain at
- 00:27:10least on the aesthetic side this
- 00:27:13anti-Israel posture is because their
- 00:27:16population will overthrow them whether
- 00:27:19they be the Gulf nation states or
- 00:27:21whether it be the like whether it be
- 00:27:24monarchies or whether it be an
- 00:27:26authoritarian leadership under the Adan
- 00:27:28regime if they were to just actively say
- 00:27:30you guys we love Israel they're a
- 00:27:32western nation we want to be a western
- 00:27:34aligned nation but make no mistake as
- 00:27:36I've said already the notion that uh any
- 00:27:40Turkish politician is going to be like
- 00:27:41actively pro- Israel out and about is
- 00:27:44crazy is silly look at what they are
- 00:27:46doing not what they're saying but even
- 00:27:48Then what they're saying is is never
- 00:27:50going to be pro- Israel it's going to be
- 00:27:52pro Palestine that's not AI no it's not
- 00:27:55it's a whirling darish in front of the
- 00:27:57cops getting tear gas
- 00:27:59directly it's a disappointing day every
- 00:28:02day is disappointing there will there
- 00:28:04will be no day of peace going forward i
- 00:28:07don't think respect the rights of
- 00:28:08peaceful protesters after anchor said it
- 00:28:11had arrested more than a thousand people
- 00:28:13since anti-government demonstrations
- 00:28:14began last week tens of thousands of
- 00:28:17people returned to the streets across
- 00:28:19Turkey on Sunday in defiance of a ban on
- 00:28:22rallies they're angry about the arrest
- 00:28:24of Ekram Imamalu the mayor of Istanbul
- 00:28:27and a key political rival of President
- 00:28:29Rajib Ta Erdogan dw has been hearing
- 00:28:32from people on the streets of
- 00:28:34Istanbul justice must be
- 00:28:37served it cannot be this way and it
- 00:28:40cannot continue like this but we don't
- 00:28:42know what to do either everyone is
- 00:28:45conflicted right now they don't know
- 00:28:47what to do they don't know how to act if
- 00:28:49I go to a protest it's a crime but if I
- 00:28:52don't it's a problem
- 00:28:55support for Imamolu will increase
- 00:28:57instead of going to prison he's on the
- 00:28:59path to the
- 00:29:01presidency they put the man who
- 00:29:03committed no crime in prison if he had
- 00:29:05committed a crime then fine you know
- 00:29:08President Erdogan went to prison for 3
- 00:29:09months in 1999 imamu is on this path
- 00:29:13right now
- 00:29:15we will protest like this we can do it
- 00:29:17without breaking things left why is
- 00:29:19Ardan doing this now 3 years out from
- 00:29:20the election one because
- 00:29:22Egimolu said he was going to run he was
- 00:29:25going to announce his candidacy for the
- 00:29:26presidency number two this is the
- 00:29:30maximum amount of support that he has
- 00:29:33from Western leaders he has a lot of
- 00:29:36clout right now in the Western world he
- 00:29:39has always been very clever at foreign
- 00:29:42policy always and I don't mean that
- 00:29:44that's a good thing just so you
- 00:29:46understand make no mistake he's just
- 00:29:48always been a very clever foreign policy
- 00:29:51guy but that usually means very brutal i
- 00:29:54mean yeah everyone is becoming more and
- 00:29:57more everyone's becoming more fascist
- 00:29:59everyone's becoming more comfortable in
- 00:30:01their authoritarian tendencies countries
- 00:30:04are becoming more reactionary in general
- 00:30:06do you think him overcoming the CI back
- 00:30:08coup has anything to do with cloud and
- 00:30:09western politics no that actually
- 00:30:11solidified support for him that was the
- 00:30:13that was the most internal support he
- 00:30:16ever had understandably so because the
- 00:30:19CIA backed coup was literally using
- 00:30:23American fighter jets to kill Turkish
- 00:30:25citizens you had tanks you had Turkish
- 00:30:28citizens with guns overtake the parallel
- 00:30:32state that the CIA agent Fetakulan had
- 00:30:36established within the Turkish
- 00:30:38government and overcoming that was a
- 00:30:41major W for
- 00:30:43Rajipan and everyone like that was the
- 00:30:46moment where his his popularity
- 00:30:48skyrocketed again yeah this is where
- 00:30:51Fidel Gudan used to live i say used to
- 00:30:54because he's he's dead now he died uh he
- 00:30:57was a CIA asset inside the rural
- 00:30:59Pennsylvania compound where an
- 00:31:00influential Muslim cleric lives in exile
- 00:31:02you can also tell he's a CIA asset
- 00:31:05because the Washington Post is writing
- 00:31:08about him in such positive terms the
- 00:31:12coup failed ardan got a lot of political
- 00:31:14capital after that he got so much
- 00:31:16political capital that he actually
- 00:31:18implemented martial law and then put a
- 00:31:21referendum to change the constitution of
- 00:31:24the Turkish Republic uh to to no longer
- 00:31:27be a parliamentary system and instead be
- 00:31:29a presidential system and he won that
- 00:31:32referendum people voted for it but since
- 00:31:34then Ardan has still played ball with
- 00:31:37the western powers now I brought up all
- 00:31:40of this because America has still had
- 00:31:43levers of pressure that they can pull on
- 00:31:45the Arduan regime and they often do they
- 00:31:48have endless amounts of court dockets
- 00:31:52that they can go back to endless amounts
- 00:31:54of information that they can go back to
- 00:31:57with respect to Ardan's corruption the
- 00:31:59American government does not hate
- 00:32:02corrupt authoritarians they love corrupt
- 00:32:05authoritarians because they can always
- 00:32:08start a lawsuit the Southern District of
- 00:32:11New York is very famous for this
- 00:32:13whenever there is uh anything that Ardan
- 00:32:16is doing like maybe they're getting
- 00:32:18Russian missile defense systems even
- 00:32:20though they're a NATO country while
- 00:32:22simultaneously they are a part of the
- 00:32:24F-35 program both on the manufacturing
- 00:32:27side and they're slated to get F-35
- 00:32:28fighter jets from the United States of
- 00:32:30America well you can't have Russian
- 00:32:32missile defense systems and F-35 jets
- 00:32:34operate on the same platform and then
- 00:32:37because then you know Russians will take
- 00:32:39that information and have better missile
- 00:32:41defense systems against F-35s so
- 00:32:43whenever something like that happens as
- 00:32:46Ardan plays both sides in an effort to
- 00:32:48come out on top the American government
- 00:32:50will just pull one of the levers of
- 00:32:52pressure that they can because if you
- 00:32:54have a lot of weaknesses if you have uh
- 00:32:58if you're an outwardly corrupt
- 00:32:59authoritarian then the American
- 00:33:01government can just so easily be like
- 00:33:03"Oh you don't want to play ball okay
- 00:33:05well we're going to we're going to put a
- 00:33:07we are going to seize all of your
- 00:33:09assets." And then they'll quietly pack
- 00:33:11up those court cases as soon as plays
- 00:33:13ball this is why I need people to
- 00:33:16understand this is why I say no country
- 00:33:18operates on this planet without thinking
- 00:33:22about how America will react or how the
- 00:33:25Western world will react even though the
- 00:33:27Western world is basically just the
- 00:33:29United States of America for the most
- 00:33:30part at least until this last Trump
- 00:33:32administration that allegiance is like
- 00:33:35kind of crumbling a little bit it's
- 00:33:36probably on its last breath so that is
- 00:33:40the reason why
- 00:33:42Rajipardan is using the political
- 00:33:45capital it has in the western world
- 00:33:48right now to do this to eliminate a very
- 00:33:52popular political opponent that's why
- 00:33:54it's happening right now and not 3 years
- 00:33:57down the line when the election will
- 00:33:59happen for the people who are asking um
- 00:34:01do you personally think I would be a
- 00:34:03good leader is he still right-wing like
- 00:34:04Ardan or liberal like Kimal um he is a
- 00:34:07liberal he's a social democrat and I'm
- 00:34:10sure that he would also do a bunch of
- 00:34:12corruption if he were ever to get power
- 00:34:14the difference however is that there is
- 00:34:16no way for him to physically be as
- 00:34:18corrupt as
- 00:34:19Rajipad which is precisely the reason
- 00:34:22why it's still the preferable outcome
- 00:34:24here it's no different than having a
- 00:34:26conversation about like who gets to lead
- 00:34:29Gaza right who gets to be the the
- 00:34:31political authority in Gaza these sorts
- 00:34:33of conversations I think ultimately are
- 00:34:35are silly it's like yeah no he's not my
- 00:34:38favorite politician i mean he is pretty
- 00:34:40good overall but it's just like there's
- 00:34:43nothing it's not a Harris versus Trump
- 00:34:46no it's different no no no no no this is
- 00:34:48not like a Harris versus Trump situation
- 00:34:50at all i don't even know how to describe
- 00:34:53it like there is a tremendous amount of
- 00:34:55political repression that Adon has
- 00:34:57implemented in the 22 years that he's
- 00:35:00been in 22 plus years he's been in power
- 00:35:02it's not even remotely comparable it's
- 00:35:04like Tim Walls versus Putin kind of yeah
- 00:35:06or or Kla Harris versus Putin hard to
- 00:35:09explain to Americans how American
- 00:35:10foreign influence works because it's by
- 00:35:12design kept hidden and complicated i
- 00:35:13know but as a Turkish person who also
- 00:35:15lives in the United States of America I
- 00:35:17try to do my very best but it's like
- 00:35:18impossible for Americans to understand
- 00:35:20it it's like every single Turk in my
- 00:35:22chat despises Adon except for like the
- 00:35:24hogs I guess but if I were to ask them
- 00:35:26individually like would you rather have
- 00:35:29a a CIA puppet like Fedan run the
- 00:35:32country they would say no that's
- 00:35:34precisely the reason why Adon actually
- 00:35:36gained popularity after the coup failed
- 00:35:38it's it's impossible for Americans to
- 00:35:41understand this stuff though impossible
- 00:35:43that's why I try to explain to people
- 00:35:44like most countries outside of the
- 00:35:46periphery that are still uh you know
- 00:35:49secondary western aligned nations like
- 00:35:51Turkey or especially countries in the
- 00:35:53Middle East might have anger and
- 00:35:56resentment towards their leadership
- 00:35:59having said that they would not prefer
- 00:36:01an American CIA puppet who is also cut
- 00:36:04from the same background as Ardan break
- 00:36:07them up for now at least in spite these
- 00:36:09bands that have existed i don't think
- 00:36:10many of the goodness Turks see good as a
- 00:36:12potential leader for the Turks i I don't
- 00:36:13think they realize as a CIA backed
- 00:36:15government either movement either yeah
- 00:36:17they just they despise Gulen for um the
- 00:36:20same reasons that they despise Ardan
- 00:36:21because Genan and Ardan come from the
- 00:36:23same group it's the same movement yes
- 00:36:26they parted ways but it was initially
- 00:36:28the same movement turkish politics is
- 00:36:30interesting the chemists are by and
- 00:36:33large liberals a lot of the socialist
- 00:36:36movements in Turkey a lot of the workers
- 00:36:37movements in Turkey are are uh backed by
- 00:36:41uh the pro-Kurdish movements so in terms
- 00:36:44of like permissible politics in Turkey
- 00:36:47in terms of like uh popular support and
- 00:36:49popular mobilization a lot of that is
- 00:36:51done against the government on the
- 00:36:53boundaries of liberalism and many of
- 00:36:55these liberals find themselves to be
- 00:36:57like European style Turks they despise
- 00:37:00Ardon because of his uh Islamist
- 00:37:03conservatism and they think Rajipardon
- 00:37:05understandably because he Ardon has done
- 00:37:07this they look at Ardon and his movement
- 00:37:09as like a a disgusting backwards
- 00:37:12regressive movement which it is to be
- 00:37:14fair they think Ardon is is going
- 00:37:17against the the uh chemist principles of
- 00:37:20of like liberal secular Turkey much like
- 00:37:23my criticisms of the Democratic party in
- 00:37:25America and liberals in America I have
- 00:37:27criticisms of the Turkish liberals as
- 00:37:28well it's hilarious comparing Trump to
- 00:37:30Adon trump could have never
- 00:37:31outmaneuvered chemists like Adawan did
- 00:37:33after 2011 no that's that's fair yeah no
- 00:37:36you're you're absolutely right about
- 00:37:38that damn Ninjammer why the do you know
- 00:37:40that that's surprising are you even Are
- 00:37:42you Turkish turkish lives are in a
- 00:37:44perpetual state of pro-European
- 00:37:45liberalism and nationalism where they
- 00:37:47really want to be European but when
- 00:37:48things heat up and EU tells them to off
- 00:37:50they come back to nationalist isol
- 00:37:52isolationism yes Turks also will so
- 00:37:55easily be like you are the servant of
- 00:37:57the British Empire which is one of my
- 00:37:59favorite
- 00:38:01takes meanwhile there's NATO bases
- 00:38:04everywhere they will say I am
- 00:38:06simultaneously a fidel supporter but
- 00:38:09also gay because I paint my fingernails
- 00:38:12and also will say that I am pro-America
- 00:38:16i'm an American uh you know I'm a
- 00:38:17pro-America guy meanwhile I'm over here
- 00:38:20talking about how American uh uh
- 00:38:22American influence on Turkish politics
- 00:38:24is is the reason why Turkey is as it is
- 00:38:26did Adon hit the Islamist button before
- 00:38:28after the coup attempt no he was always
- 00:38:30a Islamist he always ran on religious
- 00:38:32freedom that was his that was his
- 00:38:34sticktick he he he was like pro-
- 00:38:36European pro- capitalist pro- uh
- 00:38:39abolishing stateowned enterprises but he
- 00:38:42also built his base dude there are so
- 00:38:45many parallels with Trump okay it is so
- 00:38:47annoying to relitigate this [ __ ] because
- 00:38:49I grew up with it and then I watched it
- 00:38:52happen in 2016 and now I'm watching the
- 00:38:54second stage of it when he came to power
- 00:38:56he had to develop a base of support that
- 00:38:59base of support came from all around the
- 00:39:01country of Turks Muslim Turks who who
- 00:39:05felt like they were being oppressed by
- 00:39:07uh the the liesete uh the the secular
- 00:39:11the the forcible secular values
- 00:39:13implemented in the Turkish constitution
- 00:39:16under the chemist revolution and he
- 00:39:19basically said like all of that is
- 00:39:21ruining uh the lives of Turkish Muslims
- 00:39:24like they're they're repressed they're
- 00:39:26repressed religiously they're not
- 00:39:27allowed to be uh religious in public or
- 00:39:30whatever it was true though no it I
- 00:39:33don't think it was I don't think it is
- 00:39:34true well there is some truth to it but
- 00:39:37it's not as as cut and dry as you
- 00:39:40present it because when you look at the
- 00:39:42outcome of that like u the the uh hijab
- 00:39:45ban for example uh the the initial hijab
- 00:39:49ban in Turkey and him basically taking
- 00:39:52that out saying you can wear a hijab in
- 00:39:55public institutions was seen as um from
- 00:39:58the eyes of the the population of Turks
- 00:40:00that like truly wanted to be able to to
- 00:40:03express their their religious freedoms
- 00:40:05there was a hijab ban yes of course in
- 00:40:08Turkey it was illegal to wear a hijab
- 00:40:13when you were uh when you were working
- 00:40:15in public office lisa I have a
- 00:40:19complicated opinion on this because
- 00:40:21Turkey is a Muslim country it's
- 00:40:24different than when it's done in Quebec
- 00:40:26it's different than when it's done in um
- 00:40:28when it's done in France it's a Muslim
- 00:40:31nation turkey since its foundation since
- 00:40:34its inception has always been a secular
- 00:40:38nation a secular nation that literally
- 00:40:41has ironically enough a religious
- 00:40:44ministry it's very difficult to
- 00:40:47understand with a with a western lens
- 00:40:49okay we
- 00:40:50have it's a it's a religious
- 00:40:54ministry is it is it not a part of the
- 00:40:56government i I don't understand is it
- 00:40:58does it
- 00:41:03I mean yeah it's a regulatory agency
- 00:41:04it's like saying the Chamber of Commerce
- 00:41:06is technically not a part of the
- 00:41:07American government it's not it sounds
- 00:41:10like a It sounds like an American
- 00:41:11government uhhuh and it it has a lot of
- 00:41:14influence within the government but it's
- 00:41:16technically not a part of the government
- 00:41:17it's the It's the same [ __ ] anyway uh
- 00:41:21came in and uh and took out the hijab
- 00:41:24ban was very that was very popular for
- 00:41:27his base and very unpopular for a lot of
- 00:41:30the anti-Ardogan uh the anti-Adon
- 00:41:33coalition this is important to recognize
- 00:41:35in order to understand like the liberal
- 00:41:37attitude um the Turkish liberal attitude
- 00:41:40in the country i mean there has been
- 00:41:42growing criticism from particularly from
- 00:41:44the European Union which has been
- 00:41:46voicing concern over the handling of the
- 00:41:48protest as well as the uh the arrest and
- 00:41:51imprisonment of Eramimolo but it has to
- 00:41:54be said that the influence of the
- 00:41:55European Union has has very little these
- 00:41:58days given the fact that why would that
- 00:42:01be unpopular because Turkey by and large
- 00:42:04pre-Adard and its relationship with
- 00:42:05Islam is more complicated than you think
- 00:42:08it's more complicated than you
- 00:42:09understand in the eyes of many Turks the
- 00:42:11the I would say 50% anti-Ardan coalition
- 00:42:14they have a very different approach to
- 00:42:15Islam i wouldn't even say as progressive
- 00:42:18as my approach to Islam and being Muslim
- 00:42:20but close enough and for them that
- 00:42:22requires a uh a decent amount of
- 00:42:25suppression of more conservative
- 00:42:27elements of Islam forcibly by the
- 00:42:30government and historically speaking
- 00:42:31despite the fact that the Ottoman Empire
- 00:42:33was the caliphate even their approach to
- 00:42:36Islam is was quite different than the
- 00:42:40modern version that you see from
- 00:42:42Wahhabis you know it's a it is a
- 00:42:46significantly less tolerant now the
- 00:42:50example I will use is the um the 18th
- 00:42:54century reforms that came in Turkey that
- 00:42:57literally
- 00:42:58decriminalized anal sex and
- 00:43:00homosexuality and homosexual behavior
- 00:43:03far before Europe ever even approached
- 00:43:05the subject matter and that was done as
- 00:43:06a response and even before then it
- 00:43:08wasn't that um yeah Tanzimat is a very
- 00:43:11different attitude from a you know
- 00:43:13predominantly Muslim country towards its
- 00:43:15own expression of Islam ironically
- 00:43:18enough I think that there was a lot of
- 00:43:19response that divided the country with
- 00:43:22Ardawan's religious freedom uh movement
- 00:43:24like that created a counterculture
- 00:43:27against that sort of thing turkeykey's
- 00:43:29largely given up on the idea of being a
- 00:43:31member of Europe although President
- 00:43:32Erdogan today said that Europe can
- 00:43:35European Union cannot survive without
- 00:43:37Turkey and I think he was looking to the
- 00:43:39fact that Turkey has the second largest
- 00:43:41army in NATO and Europe is looking to
- 00:43:43increasingly looking to its own
- 00:43:44resources to defend against the Russian
- 00:43:46threat so Erdogan believes he has more
- 00:43:48leverage over Europe than Europe has
- 00:43:50over Erdogan but I think the one
- 00:43:52Achilles heel or the one thing that
- 00:43:53major concern for Erdogan will be the
- 00:43:55economy and the financial markets ever
- 00:43:57since the arrest of Imam Olu there has
- 00:43:59been a a vast exiting of foreign
- 00:44:01investors and the government has been
- 00:44:03the central bank has been forced to
- 00:44:05spend up to $30 billion defending the
- 00:44:08currency how long they can sustain
- 00:44:10sustain sustain that is a key question
- 00:44:12and that will be a concern on Erdogan
- 00:44:14and probably a factor that he really
- 00:44:15will want these protests to come to an
- 00:44:17end for the protesters they see that as
- 00:44:19an opportunity and put further pressure
- 00:44:20on Erdogan over the imprisonment of
- 00:44:22Imamo thank you Dorian dw correspondent
- 00:44:25Dorian Jones in Istanbul i don't know
- 00:44:28where this will go but I don't foresee
- 00:44:30it being anywhere good on the one hand I
- 00:44:33don't care if people want to wear the
- 00:44:35hijab okay while they're doing their
- 00:44:37jobs on the other hand in Turkey the
- 00:44:42expression of political Islam being
- 00:44:44brought to the forefront is not just
- 00:44:46about people getting religious freedoms
- 00:44:48to wear the hijab but instead all of the
- 00:44:51accompanying forms of suppression that
- 00:44:54move Turkey away from being a secular or
- 00:44:57liberal socially liberal socially
- 00:44:58progressive nation that's the problem
- 00:45:01that's why I say it's complicated it's
- 00:45:03like in the United States of America
- 00:45:06Christians Christian nationalists coming
- 00:45:08to power and saying "We have to do
- 00:45:10religious freedom." That's what Trump
- 00:45:12said right we have to do religious
- 00:45:13freedom for the Christians in this
- 00:45:15country the Christians in this nation we
- 00:45:17got to do religious freedom for them and
- 00:45:19that religious freedom is not about like
- 00:45:21it's not about offering Christians the
- 00:45:24the freedom to be able to you know do
- 00:45:27Christianity in public they literally
- 00:45:29can do that but instead it's more so to
- 00:45:32suppress whatever Christians have
- 00:45:34decided is anti-Christian like gay
- 00:45:37people trans people
- Turkey
- Erdogan
- Imamoglu
- protests
- opposition
- political repression
- freedom of speech
- democracy
- foreign policy
- corruption
