  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

Brisbane is often overlooked compared to its flashier counterparts like Sydney and Melbourne. The author finds it surprisingly beautiful, peaceful, and family-friendly. It has a smaller, suburban feel compared to other major cities, making it easy to navigate if you have a car. The public transport system is reliable, with affordable bus rides. Contrary to the perception of being boring, there's plenty to do, especially for families, such as visits to South Bank with its man-made beach and parks. Brisbane offers a more wholesome lifestyle, which is appealing to the author's family plans.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:12:13

While Brisbane has many appealing lifestyle factors, it does have its downsides. The city is not very walkable, necessitating a car for comfortable transport to many suburbs. Finding a rental property can be challenging, often taking weeks or even months, similar to experiences in larger cities. The rising cost of living is also a concern, particularly in rental prices which can be quite high. However, the author emphasizes the positive aspects of life in Brisbane, such as a slower pace of life, safety, and abundant nature within a short drive, all contributing to an improved quality of life.

brisbane flies under the radar It's not
  • 00:00:02
as flashy and popular as Sydney It's not
  • 00:00:05
as artsy as Melbourne and a lot of
  • 00:00:08
people don't talk about it anywhere near
  • 00:00:09
enough but that's exactly why people
  • 00:00:11
    including me completely overlooked what
  • 00:00:13
it's really like to live here It's
  • 00:00:15
    beautiful it's peaceful and it's
  • 00:00:16
surprising And honestly it shocked me in
  • 00:00:18
ways that I wasn't even prepared for So
  • 00:00:20
here are the 10 things that I wish I
  • 00:00:22
knew before I moved to Brisbane The good
  • 00:00:23
the bad and honestly stuff that no one
  • 00:00:25
else is going to tell you Hey mate
  • 00:00:27
Welcome back I'm Sam a British expat
  • 00:00:29
documenting my journey of leaving the UK
  • 00:00:31
to start a fresh and a better life in
  • 00:00:33
Australia So number one is Brisbane
  • 00:00:35
feels small and that's both good and a
  • 00:00:37
little bit weird You expect this massive
  • 00:00:39
city when you see its skyline all these
  • 00:00:42
big skyscrapers in CBD and you're like
  • 00:00:44
"Wow this must be a huge city." But it
  • 00:00:47
operates kind of like a town A lot of
  • 00:00:49
Brisbane is very suburban and the actual
  • 00:00:51
central business district of the city is
  • 00:00:53
    relatively small compared to other
  • 00:00:55
cities I've visited in my life Now I'm
  • 00:00:57
originally from a town called Chelnham
  • 00:00:59
in Glstershare in the Cotswwells in the
  • 00:01:01
UK And Brisbane compared to Chelnham is
  • 00:01:05
massive Absolutely massive Chenham is a
  • 00:01:07
teeny tiny town It takes you about 15
  • 00:01:10
minutes to get from one side of the town
  • 00:01:12
to the other in a car So that just puts
  • 00:01:14
things into perspective But growing up
  • 00:01:16
because Chenham is sort of split between
  • 00:01:18
the countryside and the town lifestyle I
  • 00:01:20
sort of grew up thinking "Oh this is a
  • 00:01:22
pretty builtup place." and then you know
  • 00:01:24
move to Japan move to Osaka move to
  • 00:01:26
Brisbane and I'm like how wrong I was So
  • 00:01:28
if you've got a car it's super easy to
  • 00:01:30
get around I mean some of the motorways
  • 00:01:32
can sometimes get clogged up with the
  • 00:01:34
rush hour traffic as any city Also the
  • 00:01:36
buses are really reliable here much more
  • 00:01:38
reliable than the UK buses I have to say
  • 00:01:40
And currently they're doing a deal where
  • 00:01:42
any bus ride across the city is only050
  • 00:01:45
which is so awesome Now I've heard some
  • 00:01:47
people refer to it as boring but
  • 00:01:49
honestly unless you want to be clubbing
  • 00:01:51
until 6:00 a.m in the morning Brisbane
  • 00:01:53
is not boring at all There's actually so
  • 00:01:55
much to do and I see Brisbane as the
  • 00:01:58
    more wholesome familyfriendly city Now
  • 00:02:01
I'm married and my wife and I we do plan
  • 00:02:03
on having children one day and living in
  • 00:02:06
a safe and family-friendly city is
  • 00:02:09
really important to us For example in
  • 00:02:11
the center they've got South Bank which
  • 00:02:12
has this gorgeous long route that you
  • 00:02:14
can take your kids out on bikes And
  • 00:02:17
    they've also got a man-made beach and
  • 00:02:19
then right next door to it a swimming
  • 00:02:21
pool that is completely free to use and
  • 00:02:23
you can put your towel on the man-made
  • 00:02:24
beach grab an ice cream chill out for a
  • 00:02:26
bit dip in the water Yes it gets quite
  • 00:02:28
crowded but this is also right on the
  • 00:02:30
river's edge and it just is a really
  • 00:02:32
    wholesome familyfriendly thing to do
  • 00:02:34
They've just opened Blueies World You're
  • 00:02:36
also in a really good location to theme
  • 00:02:38
parks like Dream World and Movie World
  • 00:02:39
and SeaWorld The suburban lifestyle is
  • 00:02:42
very chilled out There's loads of great
  • 00:02:43
places to eat There's loads of amazing
  • 00:02:46
cafes and you just feel safe there
  • 00:02:48
Number two is it's not very walkable Now
  • 00:02:51
despite what I was just saying about
  • 00:02:53
being able to wander through the city
  • 00:02:54
yes the city's great Also if you love
  • 00:02:57
your suburb very walkable And there are
  • 00:03:00
    gorgeous suburbs There's gorgeous places
  • 00:03:02
to run and gorgeous open green spaces to
  • 00:03:06
you know take your family and to go on
  • 00:03:07
bike rides and all of that but you will
  • 00:03:09
find that to get to a lot of those
  • 00:03:11
places comfortably you will need a car
  • 00:03:13
or you'll need to get an Uber So that's
  • 00:03:15
one of the very few downsides about
  • 00:03:16
Brisbane And public transport is pretty
  • 00:03:18
good here with their buses and their
  • 00:03:20
trains but it can obviously have its
  • 00:03:22
patchy moments as you would expect on
  • 00:03:24
certain holidays throughout the year And
  • 00:03:26
this might seem obvious but the reason
  • 00:03:27
why I'm saying it is because it affects
  • 00:03:29
your lifestyle a lot more than you think
  • 00:03:31
When my wife and I first moved here we
  • 00:03:32
didn't get a car for a couple of months
  • 00:03:34
cuz we thought "Ah we'll be fine We
  • 00:03:36
won't need one." But then we quickly
  • 00:03:37
realized how frustrating this is But the
  • 00:03:39
good news is that in Australia things
  • 00:03:41
like registration and insurance and fuel
  • 00:03:44
in my experience is much cheaper than
  • 00:03:46
the UK So it's a really good place to
  • 00:03:49
get a car Also if you're enjoying this
  • 00:03:51
would you mind just doing me a favor and
  • 00:03:52
hitting the like button It really helps
  • 00:03:53
to support my channel Thank you Number
  • 00:03:55
three is finding a rental apartment is
  • 00:03:57
difficult I thought after my experience
  • 00:04:00
of trying to rent a place in London
  • 00:04:02
finding it really hard to get accepted
  • 00:04:04
on a struggling actor and freelance
  • 00:04:06
video editor's salary we thought it
  • 00:04:08
would be way easier in Australia And we
  • 00:04:10
very quickly realized no there is also a
  • 00:04:12
cost of living crisis here And it took
  • 00:04:14
us a solid month of going to many
  • 00:04:17
viewings every single week to find a
  • 00:04:19
place And some of these viewings you go
  • 00:04:21
to there would be quite a few other
  • 00:04:23
    people there And honestly these
  • 00:04:24
inspections only last a few minutes
  • 00:04:26
before you awkwardly feel like you need
  • 00:04:28
to shuffle out there Whereas in the UK
  • 00:04:30
typically you can expect to be going to
  • 00:04:32
a private viewing where it's just you
  • 00:04:33
and the real estate agent taking you
  • 00:04:35
through a wander of the property can
  • 00:04:37
really give you their time and energy
  • 00:04:39
and attention So we got quite lucky but
  • 00:04:43
you could expect to be looking for an
  • 00:04:44
apartment for upwards a month or two or
  • 00:04:47
even three So I can't say this enough If
  • 00:04:49
you're planning on moving to Australia
  • 00:04:51
make sure you've got some short-term
  • 00:04:53
accommodations set up after your visa
  • 00:04:55
has been granted I'm really grateful I
  • 00:04:57
have my in-laws here to look after us
  • 00:04:59
and that we could stay in their spare
  • 00:05:01
room because if we didn't have them you
  • 00:05:03
know we would be staying in like Airbnbs
  • 00:05:05
and spending thousands of dollars So
  • 00:05:07
yeah definitely get that sorted out
  • 00:05:09
before you come here because finding a
  • 00:05:11
rental can take time Number four is your
  • 00:05:13
lifestyle will be upgraded And this
  • 00:05:16
applies even if you're an Aussie moving
  • 00:05:18
from a different part of Australia There
  • 00:05:19
is something here for everyone in
  • 00:05:21
Brisbane Brisbane is such an active
  • 00:05:22
community People are out walking their
  • 00:05:24
dogs and running and exercising in the
  • 00:05:27
park and hanging out with friends at
  • 00:05:29
coffee shops outside in the gorgeous
  • 00:05:31
sunshine And you don't necessarily plan
  • 00:05:33
to do this but because you'll start
  • 00:05:35
making friends here that have this way
  • 00:05:37
of life as well you'll start you know
  • 00:05:39
following what they do and getting out
  • 00:05:41
with them And your life just slowly
  • 00:05:43
starts to get better here And from what
  • 00:05:44
I've seen unless you're a CEO of one of
  • 00:05:46
those skyscraper companies in CBD the
  • 00:05:49
work life balance is super healthy here
  • 00:05:51
which you don't see in a lot of cities
  • 00:05:52
around the globe You know cities thrive
  • 00:05:54
off that capitalism Once people clock
  • 00:05:56
off from work they're getting their city
  • 00:05:59
cat home along the river going out for a
  • 00:06:01
beer with some mates They're getting out
  • 00:06:02
in the sunshine and they're actually
  • 00:06:04
resting and relaxing instead of driving
  • 00:06:07
    themselves and working themselves into
  • 00:06:09
the ground And just a quick one guys I
  • 00:06:10
was looking at my analytics today and I
  • 00:06:12
noticed that over 98% of you who
  • 00:06:14
regularly watch my videos aren't yet
  • 00:06:15
subscribed So if you're enjoying this
  • 00:06:17
    video consider hitting the subscribe
  • 00:06:18
button Really helps me to improve these
  • 00:06:20
videos all about Oz Thank you Number
  • 00:06:22
five is it's not cheap Everyone thinks
  • 00:06:24
because it's not Sydney or Melbourne
  • 00:06:27
it's the budget option No not really I
  • 00:06:30
would say rent is going to be the
  • 00:06:32
biggest hit to your bank account For a
  • 00:06:34
two-bed property in Brisbane expect to
  • 00:06:36
be paying anywhere from like at the
  • 00:06:38
    absolute lowest $2,000 Australian
  • 00:06:41
dollars a month all the way to even4
  • 00:06:44
5,000 Australian a month depending on
  • 00:06:46
where you pick Now if you live with
  • 00:06:48
someone this is going to make it
  • 00:06:49
dramatically cheaper So if you've got a
  • 00:06:51
partner or mate that you can share with
  • 00:06:53
even better The supermarkets are a bit
  • 00:06:55
more expensive here but you get what you
  • 00:06:58
pay for and you get fresher fruit and
  • 00:07:00
vegetables and dairy in my opinion
  • 00:07:02
because a lot of it is made and grown in
  • 00:07:05
Australia instead of imported like we do
  • 00:07:07
in the UK But what you pay for is what
  • 00:07:09
you get And I would argue that Brisbane
  • 00:07:12
is worth every penny you spend here
  • 00:07:14
because of the gorgeous clean city you
  • 00:07:16
get the lovely friendly people the
  • 00:07:18
    gorgeous sunshine which if you're
  • 00:07:20
British makes a huge difference to your
  • 00:07:22
    overall happiness and the beautifully
  • 00:07:24
fresh produce that you get in the
  • 00:07:26
supermarkets Number six is you feel
  • 00:07:28
pretty safe Now like any city there's
  • 00:07:31
going to be crime but in my experience
  • 00:07:33
having lived in a few unsafe cities in
  • 00:07:35
the past Brisbane feels by far the
  • 00:07:37
safest Obviously it's easier for me to
  • 00:07:39
say as a man but I can go for a run at
  • 00:07:42
night and feel relatively safe You feel
  • 00:07:44
like you can leave some of your stuff
  • 00:07:46
like your phone on the table at a cafe
  • 00:07:48
and no one's going to nick it because in
  • 00:07:50
the UK it would be gone Obviously this
  • 00:07:52
isn't advice You know someone could
  • 00:07:53
still nick your phone in Brisbane And my
  • 00:07:55
wife who felt incredibly unsafe in
  • 00:07:58
London and would often get really
  • 00:07:59
    intimidating creepy stairs from like
  • 00:08:01
creepy men on the tube and stuff she
  • 00:08:03
feels so much safer here in Brisbane Now
  • 00:08:05
I'm no psychologist but we all want to
  • 00:08:07
feel safe and that feeling of safety has
  • 00:08:09
a massive improvement on your life And
  • 00:08:11
Brisbane is one of the safest cities
  • 00:08:13
I've ever lived in And just a quick one
  • 00:08:14
guys if you've been watching my videos
  • 00:08:16
and they've helped you I've just
  • 00:08:17
launched my Patreon and it's the best
  • 00:08:19
way to support this channel So links
  • 00:08:21
below I'd love for you to join us Number
  • 00:08:22
seven is the pace of life is slower
  • 00:08:25
which is nice Living in London oh my
  • 00:08:27
gosh it's not even a stereotype how
  • 00:08:29
everyone's like business hustle be an
  • 00:08:32
entrepreneur It really is like that And
  • 00:08:33
that's why people will push into you on
  • 00:08:35
the tube and they will forget their
  • 00:08:36
British politeness That happens you know
  • 00:08:39
only really in London In the UK people
  • 00:08:41
are you know generally a lot more polite
  • 00:08:43
But in Brisbane less hustle fewer
  • 00:08:45
impending deadlines by the feel of
  • 00:08:46
things Some people might think oh surely
  • 00:08:48
this is bad for your you know ambitious
  • 00:08:50
goals Surely this is a hindrance Not at
  • 00:08:53
all Having this overall calmness of all
  • 00:08:55
the things we've spoken about today and
  • 00:08:57
especially the slower pace of life It
  • 00:08:59
actually makes you more productive You
  • 00:09:00
start working on the important things on
  • 00:09:02
the things that energize you and make
  • 00:09:04
you happy get you closer to your goals
  • 00:09:06
instead of just doing things for the
  • 00:09:08
sake of money for the sake of company
  • 00:09:10
growth But this slower pace of life is
  • 00:09:13
so good for you in so many more ways

than people realize And it does not make
  • 00:09:17
you less productive Number eight is that
  • 00:09:19
it is in a prime location And you don't
  • 00:09:21
realize it at first but when you move to
  • 00:09:22
Brisbane you realize that some of
  • 00:09:24
Australia's prime locations are on your
  • 00:09:26
doorstep If you want to go to the Gold
  • 00:09:28
Coast 1-hour drive If you want to go to
  • 00:09:30
the Sunshine Coast 1-hour drive If you
  • 00:09:32
need to fly across the country well
  • 00:09:34
pretty much anywhere you live in
  • 00:09:36
Brisbane you're going to be relatively
  • 00:09:38
close to Brisbane airport because it's a
  • 00:09:40
much smaller city Also got amazing
  • 00:09:42
family activities like Lom Pine Koala
  • 00:09:45
Sanctuary Not to mention you're much
  • 00:09:46
closer than you think to gorgeous hiking
  • 00:09:48
trails with so much nature to get
  • 00:09:50
immersed in And that's the brilliant
  • 00:09:51
thing about Brisbane It gives you the
  • 00:09:53
city life without boxing you into it In
  • 00:09:56
London once you're there you feel locked
  • 00:09:57
in and you have to break out But here in
  • 00:10:01
    Brisbane you feel that freedom
  • 00:10:02
especially because you've probably got a
  • 00:10:04
car here It's the kind of variety that
  • 00:10:06
people would fly to so many different
  • 00:10:08
countries to experience but it's all on
  • 00:10:10
your doorstep here It's amazing And this
  • 00:10:12
leads me on to number nine Nature is way
  • 00:10:14
closer than you think Mountains islands
  • 00:10:16
rainforest they are all in a 1 to two
  • 00:10:19
hour drive You've got Strabroke Island
  • 00:10:21
you've got Morton Bay you've got Mount
  • 00:10:23
Tambourine you've got Towa you I could
  • 00:10:26
go on and on and on but you've got all
  • 00:10:28
of these different experiences And if
  • 00:10:30
you want to stay in the city you can go
  • 00:10:31
rent a kayak out and go kayaking down
  • 00:10:34
the Brisbane River Just don't fall in
  • 00:10:35
    like I did because I've heard there's
  • 00:10:37
bull sharks in the river That was a very
  • 00:10:38
scary time And number 10 it will change
  • 00:10:40
your life Cliche yes Is it true though
  • 00:10:44
Also yes If you move here Aussie or not
  • 00:10:46
it will completely change your life for
  • 00:10:49
the better Yes I can't guarantee you
  • 00:10:51
won't get homesick and you won't have
  • 00:10:53
some struggles here as you would with
  • 00:10:55
any place No place is grass is 100%
  • 00:10:58
greener on the other side But will it
  • 00:11:00
improve your life with your social
  • 00:11:02
    connections your health your overall
  • 00:11:04
happiness maybe even your wealth I would
  • 00:11:07
think so Even if you're Australian if
  • 00:11:09
you move here you will have a new
  • 00:11:10
outlook on Australia Now I have had a
  • 00:11:12
couple of comments in the past being
  • 00:11:14
like why bother moving You know why not
  • 00:11:17
just try and enjoy life where you are
  • 00:11:18
But what's the point of being human if
  • 00:11:20
we don't make a conscious effort to
  • 00:11:22
improve our lives Some people say that
  • 00:11:24
the only reason you feel stuck and
  • 00:11:26
miserable in the country you're in right
  • 00:11:28
now is because of you and not the
  • 00:11:30
country itself And I completely disagree
  • 00:11:32
with that There are certain places that
  • 00:11:34
are suited to certain people And for me
  • 00:11:36
personally I feel suited to the Brisbane
  • 00:11:39
    Queensland lifestyle And honestly
  • 00:11:41
Brisbane will give you the breathing
  • 00:11:42
room that you never knew you needed Now
  • 00:11:44
if you're thinking "Okay this all sounds
  • 00:11:46
amazing but how can I actually afford
  • 00:11:47
this?" Then don't worry I've got you
  • 00:11:49
I've made a full and completely honest
  • 00:11:52
breakdown of every little cost that you
  • 00:11:55
