SOAL BUMN 2025 - VERBAL LOGICAL REASONING
- 00:00:00all right well I apologize for the
- 00:00:04miscommunication or whatever has
- 00:00:05happened but I'm glad to pitch in and
- 00:00:07vegetable gardening is something that I
- 00:00:09love to talk about so
- 00:00:11um let's talk veggies and Blake's right
- 00:00:13this is the perfect time of year to
- 00:00:16start
- 00:00:16um your vegetable garden gardening so
- 00:00:19um here we go
- 00:00:24okay excuse me going back
- 00:00:28um so the very first thing you've got to
- 00:00:29figure out is where are you going to put
- 00:00:31your garden and the very first and most
- 00:00:35important piece is that you have got to
- 00:00:37have sunlight sun sun sun sun and this
- 00:00:40is at least six hours of full sun so
- 00:00:44um
- 00:00:45a lot of our homes aren't
- 00:00:48um endowed with all that much sunlight I
- 00:00:51am sunlight challenged in my yard so um
- 00:00:54I actually do a fair amount of vegetable
- 00:00:56gardening in containers because those
- 00:00:58are easier to locate in sunny places but
- 00:01:01if you don't have the sun you are not
- 00:01:03going to be able to have good
- 00:01:05um Crop Production so
- 00:01:09um they're on the um south end of your
- 00:01:12property would be best for sun for the
- 00:01:16entire day but you work with what you've
- 00:01:18got
- 00:01:20um the SEC the third thing on this list
- 00:01:22but um I think it comes under sunlight
- 00:01:25or after sunlight is your soil you've
- 00:01:28got to have the proper nutrients in
- 00:01:30order to grow um plants that are going
- 00:01:32to produce
- 00:01:34um fruits and vegetables so we highly
- 00:01:37recommend for any gardening that you do
- 00:01:39that you have soil testing done and the
- 00:01:43um state of North Carolina is awesome
- 00:01:44because they offer
- 00:01:46um
- 00:01:47Free Soil testing it's free from April
- 00:01:50the beginning of April through
- 00:01:52um just about Thanksgiving or maybe the
- 00:01:54beginning of November I'm not exactly
- 00:01:56sure if those dates but these are done
- 00:01:58with little
- 00:01:59um boxes that you fill with soil and
- 00:02:01aggregate of soil from the areas that
- 00:02:03you're going to be gardening in you drop
- 00:02:05it off at the um agronomics division of
- 00:02:09the um State over on serving of the
- 00:02:13fairgrounds our office can give you
- 00:02:15specifics and we also have the kits for
- 00:02:18you to um to use for putting your soil
- 00:02:21into but you send it to them they test
- 00:02:24it and you will get a report that tells
- 00:02:26you about the compositioners of your
- 00:02:29soil and any amendments that they
- 00:02:31recommend that you add
- 00:02:33it's better to know what is in your soil
- 00:02:36before you add these amendments because
- 00:02:38you may be doing harm rather than good
- 00:02:41for your plants by adding things that is
- 00:02:43not needed and a lot of these amendments
- 00:02:47end up in our water table in our water
- 00:02:50system and it that's not a good thing we
- 00:02:53don't want chemicals there so making
- 00:02:55sure that you are adding things to your
- 00:02:58soil that it really needs and can use
- 00:03:01um so call our office and our number is
- 00:03:04going to be at the end of this
- 00:03:05presentation and you can find out more
- 00:03:07about the soil testing you also have to
- 00:03:10water a lot North Carolina is known for
- 00:03:13our periods of lots and lots of rain our
- 00:03:16deluges of rain and then long periods of
- 00:03:19time where we're super super dry
- 00:03:22especially in the summer so you're going
- 00:03:24to have to keep an eye on the watering
- 00:03:26and making sure you do that if Mother
- 00:03:28Nature does not do that for you and
- 00:03:31something that a lot of people don't
- 00:03:32think about with their plants is that
- 00:03:34they need air circulation it's got to be
- 00:03:36able to get in and around our plants it
- 00:03:38makes their stems stronger
- 00:03:40it helps with keeping diseases at Bay so
- 00:03:46making sure that you have enough room to
- 00:03:49actually Garden is really important
- 00:03:52so like I said a minimum of six hours of
- 00:03:55Sun eight to ten hours is best
- 00:03:58um close to the house means if your
- 00:04:00garden area is so far away that you're
- 00:04:03not going to go over there often or it's
- 00:04:05going to be a chore to actually go and
- 00:04:06garden you're not going to do that
- 00:04:08especially when it comes to watering
- 00:04:10especially in the middle of July when
- 00:04:13it's hot and humid and
- 00:04:15um it gardening turns into a chore the
- 00:04:19further away from where you live the
- 00:04:21harder it is to get yourself motivated
- 00:04:22to do that and again we've got soil
- 00:04:25testing in capital letters because you
- 00:04:28need to do it and water of course if you
- 00:04:30don't have a water source that's nearby
- 00:04:33that's going to be a problem because I
- 00:04:35will tell you hauling water to a garden
- 00:04:37site again in the middle of well even
- 00:04:40late June is going to be hot but all
- 00:04:42through July and August can get to be
- 00:04:44pretty tedious pretty quickly
- 00:04:49I mentioned container gardening earlier
- 00:04:51um
- 00:04:52most things can be grown in containers
- 00:04:55which is awesome because again you can
- 00:04:57put it in spaces where you do have the
- 00:05:00sun and a lot of
- 00:05:01um green green things are beautiful in
- 00:05:04general so a lot of our crops can be
- 00:05:06used as ornamentation as well as growing
- 00:05:09food for you and if you have a small
- 00:05:11yard or a small
- 00:05:13um place I mean they can be done on
- 00:05:15balconies of apartment buildings or
- 00:05:17condos so container gardening is
- 00:05:20fabulous you you do need to make sure
- 00:05:22that whatever containers you're
- 00:05:24gardening in have good drainage there
- 00:05:27need to be holes in the bottom and as
- 00:05:29you see these in the picture they're
- 00:05:31lifted up so that the water can drain
- 00:05:33out but then the flip side of that is
- 00:05:36your water can drain out so you have to
- 00:05:38be even more careful about making sure
- 00:05:40you're watering
- 00:05:42um frequently and thoroughly
- 00:05:44you can use different sizes of pots but
- 00:05:46of course the size of pot needs to match
- 00:05:48the size of the um the crop that you're
- 00:05:52growing the plants that you're growing
- 00:05:54so too small is not good The Roots need
- 00:05:57space to grow and they can be a lot of
- 00:06:00fun you can use a lot of different
- 00:06:02things these are some of those
- 00:06:04um it looks like containers that are
- 00:06:06often at the front doors of houses and
- 00:06:08they have done a really creative Thing
- 00:06:10by using some kind of pedestals to lift
- 00:06:12them up but um my kids grew Things in
- 00:06:16Old rubber boots one year and had a
- 00:06:21boot Garden of sorts and it was a lot of
- 00:06:23fun for them of course we've made holes
- 00:06:26in the bottom of all the boots they were
- 00:06:27not boots that were being used anymore
- 00:06:29and then again the soil and I'm having
- 00:06:32the right fertility there the right
- 00:06:34nutrients for your plants is just as
- 00:06:37important in containers as it is for um
- 00:06:40the soil if you're planting in the
- 00:06:44ground
- 00:06:45can't stress enough the location needs
- 00:06:48to be good with lots and lots of sun
- 00:06:51um you get your bed ready if you're
- 00:06:53going in using the the ground this says
- 00:06:57tilling the ground we don't necessarily
- 00:06:59recommend that every year because every
- 00:07:01time you till the ground you are
- 00:07:04bringing up more weed seeds
- 00:07:06um to the light up to the top and that's
- 00:07:09what they need to germinate is that
- 00:07:10light along with the right nutrients and
- 00:07:13water so if you've got a prepared bed
- 00:07:16already you probably don't need to
- 00:07:20um till it every year especially if
- 00:07:23you're adding lots of good compost or
- 00:07:25maybe mulch or a cover crop in the
- 00:07:28winter
- 00:07:29you don't need to do that but if it's
- 00:07:32new soil of course you're going to need
- 00:07:34to dig it up you need to break that soil
- 00:07:36up and as you know here in North
- 00:07:38Carolina we have that good red clay
- 00:07:40which is in fact very good it's full of
- 00:07:43lots of nutrients it holds moisture well
- 00:07:45it's good for lots of things to grow in
- 00:07:49but it needs to be broken up with some
- 00:07:52um some organic material because
- 00:07:55otherwise it's just this ball of clay
- 00:07:57almost so if you're if you're breaking
- 00:08:00new ground make sure that you break that
- 00:08:04native soil up really well and add in
- 00:08:07some kind of compost organic material
- 00:08:10into it to make that soil more
- 00:08:15productive the the plants are going to
- 00:08:18need to be able to grow their Roots down
- 00:08:19in that there needs to be air pockets
- 00:08:22for the air for the roots and also for
- 00:08:25water to get through so amending that
- 00:08:28soil with the compost is going to be
- 00:08:31really really important of course you
- 00:08:33want to take out as many of the weeds
- 00:08:35and all the grass that's around because
- 00:08:37anything that's in your garden plot that
- 00:08:40is not your garden
- 00:08:42specific plants that is um that's going
- 00:08:46to be fighting for the nutrients those
- 00:08:47weeds
- 00:08:49Roots grass seeds Grassroots are going
- 00:08:52to be competing for all the um the good
- 00:08:56nutrients and water and we don't want
- 00:08:58those in there
- 00:09:00and then like I said once you know what
- 00:09:02your soil already has in it you may need
- 00:09:05to amend it with some kind of
- 00:09:06fertilizers lime
- 00:09:08um there's a number of things that the
- 00:09:11soil might need and you need to know
- 00:09:13first before you add anything in
- 00:09:17and I mentioned adding some organic
- 00:09:21material in there so you can buy
- 00:09:24um compost but
- 00:09:27it's even easier to make your own but if
- 00:09:29you're just starting out you may not
- 00:09:31have that but um rotten leaves
- 00:09:35um green when you're making compost
- 00:09:37there are three things that you need you
- 00:09:39need some brown which would be something
- 00:09:41like rotting leaves small sticks pine
- 00:09:45straw that kind of stuff that's going to
- 00:09:47break down but you also need green stuff
- 00:09:49which is the newer organic material so
- 00:09:52this would be your table scraps lawn
- 00:09:54clippings things that started as living
- 00:09:58more recently
- 00:10:00and then it needs some water and over
- 00:10:05time that breaks down and makes this
- 00:10:08amazing fertile stuff that will help
- 00:10:12your plants grow
- 00:10:13so you may need to start out by buying
- 00:10:16some of that but then we recommend that
- 00:10:18you start making your own and using the
- 00:10:22things the scraps and things that are
- 00:10:24left over from your own home and in your
- 00:10:26own yard to create your own
- 00:10:29compost you can use compost to manure
- 00:10:33it's not recommended that you use new
- 00:10:36manure it needs to have some time to
- 00:10:38break down I mentioned cover crops these
- 00:10:41are things like Clover and there are
- 00:10:46some grasses that you can plant on
- 00:10:48garden beds that help to re-establish
- 00:10:51some of the nutrients that were taken
- 00:10:52out by the plants you used in the
- 00:10:54previous year
- 00:10:56they can add a lot of nitrogen back into
- 00:10:59the soil and other nutrients so that's
- 00:11:02an idea and it also will help combat
- 00:11:05weeds coming up because those cover
- 00:11:07crops can hopefully
- 00:11:09um
- 00:11:10make sure that they're not popping up as
- 00:11:13much
- 00:11:14um and then decompose material so
- 00:11:17everything is going to break down
- 00:11:19eventually when you do composting
- 00:11:22um
- 00:11:23specifically you can make it happen a
- 00:11:27little bit faster and that's the idea
- 00:11:29with having a compost bin or one of
- 00:11:32those roller things that turn
- 00:11:35um so you're trying to just break all
- 00:11:38this down and you have lots of good
- 00:11:40organisms in there that are helping the
- 00:11:42heat helps it's it just makes really
- 00:11:46good stuff so and compost can be done
- 00:11:49well so that it's not smelly it's not
- 00:11:51gross it's not unsightly and we have
- 00:11:54lots of Publications on how to best go
- 00:11:57about composting
- 00:12:01so you've gotten your spot you've gotten
- 00:12:04your soil ready you've tested you're
- 00:12:06ready to go let's put some stuff in the
- 00:12:09ground so
- 00:12:11um a couple of different ways to do that
- 00:12:13first of all think about what it is you
- 00:12:15want to plant start with the things that
- 00:12:17you like to eat if you know you don't
- 00:12:19like tomatoes and there's probably not
- 00:12:21any point in planting tomatoes
- 00:12:24um I will tell you that if you plant a
- 00:12:26little bit of squash you will come up
- 00:12:29with a lot of squash so you may not want
- 00:12:31to plant a lot of squash plants or if
- 00:12:35okra is one of your favorite things
- 00:12:36super easy to grow
- 00:12:39or plant some stuff that you don't even
- 00:12:42know anything about necessarily maybe
- 00:12:44seen it in the grocery store at or at a
- 00:12:47farmer's market and you want to
- 00:12:48experiment when my kids were young we
- 00:12:51always pick something new every summer
- 00:12:54to plant and they didn't always love the
- 00:12:57things that we grew but they were more
- 00:13:01um
- 00:13:01more likely to try it and more likely to
- 00:13:04like it if they had if they took part in
- 00:13:07picking it out and actually planting it
- 00:13:09and taking care of it so it can be fun
- 00:13:12it can be
- 00:13:14um
- 00:13:15it's it can be nutritious it can be cost
- 00:13:19saving
- 00:13:20um to an extent
- 00:13:22um we'll talk about that in a minute but
- 00:13:25um have some fun with the things that
- 00:13:26you're planting
- 00:13:28a couple of different ways that you
- 00:13:29could plant stuff some seeds are best
- 00:13:31planted directly into the soil
- 00:13:34um and that's direct planting and you
- 00:13:37can see there the person that's putting
- 00:13:38the seeds they're putting a lot of seeds
- 00:13:40in those rows so
- 00:13:41um I'm not going to recommend you doing
- 00:13:43that we'll talk about how to do that in
- 00:13:45a minute some people do the seeds
- 00:13:48indoors and that takes some um some
- 00:13:51planning because you've got to start the
- 00:13:54seeds early enough so they're big enough
- 00:13:56when it comes time to plant them in the
- 00:13:59ground so starting seeds now in late
- 00:14:02March
- 00:14:04um you're probably not going to be able
- 00:14:06to have them like maybe you could start
- 00:14:08some tomato plants for planting in late
- 00:14:11summer because we can actually have kind
- 00:14:13of two seasons of tomatoes and some
- 00:14:15other
- 00:14:16um
- 00:14:17other plantings but um what you do is
- 00:14:21look at the seed packet and see how long
- 00:14:23it generally takes those seeds to
- 00:14:25germinate and back date from the time
- 00:14:28you want to plant to the time that you
- 00:14:30need to start the seeds indoors and it
- 00:14:33takes special grow lights you're going
- 00:14:36to have to take some care with uh
- 00:14:38watching out for them making sure they
- 00:14:41have enough water and that light and
- 00:14:44um then hardening them off bringing them
- 00:14:46outside for a little while at a time so
- 00:14:49that they can get used to the
- 00:14:52fluctuations in temperatures outside
- 00:14:54since they've been taken care of inside
- 00:14:56for a while or you can buy these plants
- 00:15:00transplant so they're there on the left
- 00:15:02from a gardening center or
- 00:15:05um you know some people grow them and
- 00:15:07sell them to people but they've already
- 00:15:09done that work in figuring out when to
- 00:15:11plant the seeds and germinate them
- 00:15:13inside or in a greenhouse and here they
- 00:15:16are ready for you to plant some plants
- 00:15:18are much easier to do that way
- 00:15:21um and so like a tomato plant you would
- 00:15:24not typically you would not plant the
- 00:15:26seeds in the ground you need a
- 00:15:28transplant them so it's already a Little
- 00:15:30Seedling when you put it in
- 00:15:34foreign
- 00:15:36let's go back
- 00:15:39I think I'm going the wrong way
- 00:15:42okay so I mentioned watering um it is
- 00:15:45super critical that your plants get
- 00:15:47consistent water and if you rely on um
- 00:15:51rain here in the in North Carolina
- 00:15:54that's not going to be enough because
- 00:15:56like I said we do have periods of time
- 00:15:58where we don't get consistent rain and
- 00:16:01water so they need at least
- 00:16:04um
- 00:16:05an inch of water a week you can measure
- 00:16:08that with a um some kind of small can
- 00:16:10like a tuna can in your garden to see
- 00:16:13how that's happening or there are um
- 00:16:17commercial
- 00:16:18water gauges that you can buy to find
- 00:16:21out but you want to know how much water
- 00:16:24you're putting on that
- 00:16:26and what we want to do that consistent
- 00:16:28watering when it goes down this says six
- 00:16:30inches down when you water that much it
- 00:16:33goes down to feed those roots and you're
- 00:16:36promoting your roof root growth to go
- 00:16:38down when you um do those long waterings
- 00:16:42once or twice a week rather than
- 00:16:45watering just a little bit every day so
- 00:16:48um
- 00:16:49you're not having to do it every single
- 00:16:51day but you need to have a schedule and
- 00:16:53work around what Mother Nature is doing
- 00:16:55for you as well
- 00:16:58I mentioned earlier that if you have
- 00:17:00grass and weeds in your garden area
- 00:17:02that's competing for all the nutrients
- 00:17:05and the water that your crops need so
- 00:17:09make sure they're out of there
- 00:17:11um
- 00:17:12if you're going to use an herbicide
- 00:17:15we need we really want you to follow the
- 00:17:18directions on the bottle or the
- 00:17:21container so that you're mixing it
- 00:17:23appropriately and safely these are
- 00:17:26chemicals they are toxic they are meant
- 00:17:28to kill things so you need to be super
- 00:17:31careful with them read the directions
- 00:17:33there's a lot of them in this small
- 00:17:35print so make sure you're going to take
- 00:17:37the time to do that I'm not real good at
- 00:17:40details like that so my husband is the
- 00:17:43guy who mixes all the chemicals I'll
- 00:17:45spray but he has to mix them for me
- 00:17:48so I'm using his gifts where I need them
- 00:17:52but if you don't want to do chemicals in
- 00:17:55your garden and and understand too if
- 00:17:57you're using organic products those are
- 00:18:00toxic as well to a certain degree so you
- 00:18:03need to be just as careful with those
- 00:18:06but you can also manually get rid of
- 00:18:08your weeds you can pull them you can use
- 00:18:11a hoe or or some other kind of garden
- 00:18:13Implement to to dig them up and you need
- 00:18:17to be careful in any method that you use
- 00:18:20that you're not disturbing the plant
- 00:18:21that you want to keep so you don't want
- 00:18:24to any of the sprays to get on the
- 00:18:25plants that you're um that you want to
- 00:18:28keep and you don't want you want to make
- 00:18:30sure that when you're hoeing things
- 00:18:31you're not chopping down the wrong thing
- 00:18:32we have a fun story about my sister
- 00:18:35hoeing up actual okra plants instead of
- 00:18:38weeds and my grandfather having quite
- 00:18:40the conniption fit but she was young she
- 00:18:43didn't know what she was doing
- 00:18:45but get rid of the weeds
- 00:18:48inevitably you're going to run into some
- 00:18:51problems in gardening if you plant it
- 00:18:53they will come so you will have some
- 00:18:55pests that show up
- 00:18:58um
- 00:18:59there there is a school of thought that
- 00:19:02says um if these are things that you're
- 00:19:04going to be eating you want to be super
- 00:19:07careful and maybe not use any kind of um
- 00:19:10synthetic herbicides pesticides
- 00:19:14um because that may be going into your
- 00:19:16body again organic controls are are a
- 00:19:21little bit healthier in that regard but
- 00:19:22they're not completely safe so you need
- 00:19:25to be careful there too the biggest
- 00:19:27thing with controlling any kind of pests
- 00:19:30and diseases are to know exactly the
- 00:19:33problem that you're trying to tackle
- 00:19:35because if you're using the wrong
- 00:19:36product at the wrong time or for the
- 00:19:39wrong
- 00:19:40problem
- 00:19:42um you're just wasting money and
- 00:19:44spreading stuff out into the environment
- 00:19:47that doesn't need to be there Master
- 00:19:49Gardeners are happy to help you try and
- 00:19:51identify any problems that you're having
- 00:19:54um there are some that are kind of known
- 00:19:55for
- 00:19:57um plants but like tomatoes get blossom
- 00:20:00in rot often and some are unique or not
- 00:20:03unique but more unusual we have a plant
- 00:20:07and insect Disease Clinic that that the
- 00:20:12state has that is happy to help as well
- 00:20:14but if you want to start with the Master
- 00:20:16Gardeners you can call us we have a
- 00:20:18helpline that number will be at the end
- 00:20:21of this presentation we'll be happy to
- 00:20:22help you trying to identify what's going
- 00:20:25on and taking pictures is really helpful
- 00:20:27as well because if we saw this picture
- 00:20:30we would be able to say oh yeah we know
- 00:20:32what that is and how to take care of it
- 00:20:35um the biggest way to combat any kind of
- 00:20:38diseases and pests are to keep your
- 00:20:41plants healthy because the weaker the
- 00:20:42plant is the more of an invitation it is
- 00:20:45to these things to come in and take over
- 00:20:48so healthy plants is number one we also
- 00:20:52recommend that you rotate your your
- 00:20:54crops because and that means planting
- 00:20:57them in different spots around your
- 00:20:59garden bed because the plants will
- 00:21:03um the the host the let me say this
- 00:21:06right the pests and the diseases that
- 00:21:08that attack that particular plant and
- 00:21:11some of them are very picky they will
- 00:21:12only pick certain crops to
- 00:21:16um attack or that they can eat
- 00:21:19um and if they will stay in the soil or
- 00:21:21stay nearby and if you move those plants
- 00:21:24around you're kind of tricking them and
- 00:21:25they would have to walk a little bit
- 00:21:27further to get to your plant and um
- 00:21:29hopefully they will stay healthier
- 00:21:31longer
- 00:21:33um attracting beneficial insects is good
- 00:21:35so having lots of
- 00:21:37um plant other plantings in your yard
- 00:21:40that's going to attract other insects
- 00:21:43um is good
- 00:21:45you've probably heard of buying ladybugs
- 00:21:48and releasing them and things like that
- 00:21:51that's good but the ladybugs don't know
- 00:21:55that they're supposed to stay in your
- 00:21:56yard necessarily so um it's not always
- 00:21:59cost effective to do something like that
- 00:22:02but to make your yard an inviting place
- 00:22:04for all sorts of insects and to know
- 00:22:08which ones are the good ones and which
- 00:22:10ones are the ones you don't want to keep
- 00:22:12because you don't want to be killing any
- 00:22:14of the beneficials that's another reason
- 00:22:17you need to be super careful about any
- 00:22:19of the products that you use in your
- 00:22:21garden because they don't discriminate
- 00:22:23and will kill both beneficial and
- 00:22:26harmful insects and we want to keep the
- 00:22:28good ones around we've all heard about
- 00:22:30bee Decline and that is in part because
- 00:22:33of overuse of chemicals not the only
- 00:22:37reason but one of them and then if you
- 00:22:40are able to use Organics oftentimes
- 00:22:42those are better for the environment as
- 00:22:44well and better for your plants
- 00:22:47I mentioned diseases and there we have
- 00:22:50some tomato blossom end rot there
- 00:22:53prevention again making sure your plants
- 00:22:56are healthy making sure you're rotating
- 00:22:58your crops planting your plants at the
- 00:23:01right time
- 00:23:02um seed treatment just means making sure
- 00:23:05you're using viable seeds they do have a
- 00:23:09use by date on the packaging so that's a
- 00:23:12good thing to keep an eye on if they're
- 00:23:14old they may not germinate as well or
- 00:23:16the plants may be a little bit more
- 00:23:19compromised and not as healthy
- 00:23:22making sure your plants have good
- 00:23:23nutrition which means all the the soil
- 00:23:26nutrients that they need sanitation
- 00:23:28means keeping your stuff clean it's
- 00:23:31recommended that you clean your tools uh
- 00:23:35regularly especially if you are having
- 00:23:38to cut back some diseased material then
- 00:23:41you definitely want to keep your um
- 00:23:43clean your tools with the Bleach not
- 00:23:47straight bleach but a bleach solution I
- 00:23:49cannot remember the exact um
- 00:23:52proportions of bleach to water but um we
- 00:23:56can help you with that that's somewhere
- 00:23:57I just don't know it off the top of my
- 00:23:59head
- 00:24:00um solarization means using the sun to
- 00:24:04um keep diseases at Bay to um because it
- 00:24:08will kill some stuff so you again that's
- 00:24:11one of the reasons you're in a sunny
- 00:24:12location
- 00:24:13and then plants are tested that's one of
- 00:24:15the things that the Arboretum does a lot
- 00:24:17of
- 00:24:18um not necessarily vegetable crops but
- 00:24:22um all these plants are tested and
- 00:24:25um the plant scientists are able to do
- 00:24:28lots of Gene work on them all that
- 00:24:31sciency stuff that I don't know but I'm
- 00:24:33I'm really glad somebody does and they
- 00:24:36develop crops seeds and plants that are
- 00:24:40more resistant to diseases so we have
- 00:24:43recommendations uh the varieties that do
- 00:24:46best in this area because we do have
- 00:24:49again
- 00:24:51lots of drought we have lots of humidity
- 00:24:54we have specific insects and
- 00:24:58um diseases that come or are here
- 00:25:01already so things that are tested to
- 00:25:05work well here are going to be your best
- 00:25:07bet and there will be a link at the end
- 00:25:10for you to get all sorts of information
- 00:25:12about that
- 00:25:13and then
- 00:25:15um using disease-free seeds and
- 00:25:17transplants it's great to get
- 00:25:20um stuff from friends but you want to
- 00:25:22make sure that they have the same kind
- 00:25:24of standards for
- 00:25:28um hygiene in their yard as you do and
- 00:25:31if it's somebody that you're not sure
- 00:25:33about you might want to pass and get
- 00:25:34something from
- 00:25:36um
- 00:25:37a garden center or a person that you
- 00:25:39know is going to have good stuff
- 00:25:44and then we always have our animals that
- 00:25:46we have to kind of battle
- 00:25:49um I have both deer and rabbits that
- 00:25:52love my yard they think that I have
- 00:25:55planted quite the buffet for them the
- 00:25:57deer used to be more of a problem
- 00:26:00um and now I'm seeing more damage from
- 00:26:02Rabbits which is really annoying because
- 00:26:05they're if you see one rabbit there are
- 00:26:07hundreds literally hundreds
- 00:26:10um behind the scenes so um they can do a
- 00:26:14lot of damage really quickly so fencing
- 00:26:17is one of the best things to do there
- 00:26:19are products that are sold that say that
- 00:26:22they keep these animals away
- 00:26:26um the animals habituate themselves to
- 00:26:28just about anything so you have to be
- 00:26:30really careful
- 00:26:32um you have to change things up the best
- 00:26:34thing to do is to try and scare these
- 00:26:37animals and not let them get used to you
- 00:26:39or your yard so
- 00:26:42um you can't shoot them do do not do
- 00:26:44that but scaring them is fair game loud
- 00:26:48noises lots of unexpected
- 00:26:51movements to keep them away from your
- 00:26:54yard and they're basically running out
- 00:26:58of their own natural habitats as we
- 00:27:00build more and more and more so they
- 00:27:03come to eat
- 00:27:05the rabbit fencing oftentimes needs to
- 00:27:08be placed underground a little ways
- 00:27:10because rabbits are very very good at
- 00:27:13digging we all know that from um
- 00:27:16Peter Rabbit who got into Mr McGregor's
- 00:27:19Garden all the time so it has to have
- 00:27:23pretty small holes because they can
- 00:27:25squeeze through just about anything and
- 00:27:28deer can jump great distances so the
- 00:27:31deer fencing has to be at least six to
- 00:27:34eight feet to keep them out of your yard
- 00:27:36so
- 00:27:38um it's an ongoing battle and there are
- 00:27:41some plants that are a little bit more
- 00:27:43rabbit and deer resistant there's not
- 00:27:46anything that's really foolproof but
- 00:27:48when it comes to vegetables and fruit
- 00:27:51things their fair game for any of these
- 00:27:53animals
- 00:27:56foreign
- 00:27:58excuse me
- 00:28:01um one of the beautiful things about
- 00:28:02where we live is
- 00:28:07I failed at um advancing slides
- 00:28:10obviously
- 00:28:11um one of the beautiful things about our
- 00:28:13area is that because we don't have a
- 00:28:16super super cold winter and this year it
- 00:28:19didn't feel like we had a cold one at
- 00:28:21all we have kind of three seasons um to
- 00:28:24grow vegetables in we have our Spring
- 00:28:27Garden and those went in around February
- 00:28:31um and so
- 00:28:33um that's kind of done it says February
- 00:28:36to March but we're almost into April so
- 00:28:39um these crops are usually going to be
- 00:28:42done by mid-april or so and that
- 00:28:44includes carrots kale any of your greens
- 00:28:47like kale spinach lettuce collards all
- 00:28:51those grow in in the cool weather
- 00:28:54um peas there are a lot of peas that
- 00:28:55grow and swiss chard that's another
- 00:28:58green
- 00:28:59um but all of these things like it cool
- 00:29:02so
- 00:29:03um in February before Valentine's Day
- 00:29:05you can start these kind of plantings
- 00:29:07and these can be done again in the fall
- 00:29:11so September October you can be putting
- 00:29:14in some of these things and grow another
- 00:29:18um another round of these things I will
- 00:29:21tell you that fall Gardens sometimes are
- 00:29:24more challenging because you already
- 00:29:25have a lot of pests that have taken up
- 00:29:27residence in your garden pests and
- 00:29:30diseases so sometimes these crops have a
- 00:29:33harder time because they're combating
- 00:29:35the the things that haven't gotten
- 00:29:37frozen out by winter and then we have
- 00:29:40our summer garden and these are our
- 00:29:42traditional summer vegetables like beans
- 00:29:45and cucumbers corn squash Tomatoes well
- 00:29:49these are the things that you can grow
- 00:29:51by seed very very easily
- 00:29:55um so those would go in
- 00:29:57um mid-april to May and then grow
- 00:30:00through the summer
- 00:30:02and then these summer
- 00:30:04um Garden things are usually
- 00:30:07um
- 00:30:08done by transplants so you already have
- 00:30:10the plant that you put in the ground so
- 00:30:12those are your tomatoes and your peppers
- 00:30:13and your eggplants those are all in the
- 00:30:16same family of plants so
- 00:30:19um these are things that you want to
- 00:30:21rotate carefully because they do have
- 00:30:23some very specific diseases that will
- 00:30:27um
- 00:30:29attack these plants and um so you want
- 00:30:32to be careful not to plant them in the
- 00:30:34same place every year and so that goes
- 00:30:37for you know you wouldn't put peppers
- 00:30:39back where Tomatoes were or eggplants
- 00:30:41and you want to rotate all them around
- 00:30:45and then like I mentioned um the fall
- 00:30:48Garden so this cool season things you
- 00:30:50can also broccoli cabbage cauliflower
- 00:30:53brussels sprouts those can be planted as
- 00:30:56well those are generally planted by
- 00:30:58transplants but all these other ones
- 00:31:01that I mentioned earlier can be done
- 00:31:02with seeds
- 00:31:06so like I mentioned the Master Gardeners
- 00:31:10have an office and we have a phone line
- 00:31:13that we man almost all day long nine to
- 00:31:16twelve and then a lunch break and then
- 00:31:18again one to four so you can call us
- 00:31:20there at 919-250
- 00:31:23one zero eight four and somebody is
- 00:31:26there and can look up information one of
- 00:31:28the things that we do is provide
- 00:31:30research-based information because
- 00:31:33um that's just the best way to Garden
- 00:31:35all the stuff that's scientifically
- 00:31:36proven to work and we have the luxury of
- 00:31:40NC State right here in our backyard and
- 00:31:44they provide us all of their research
- 00:31:46information we it's written up in ways
- 00:31:49that those of us that are not scientists
- 00:31:51can understand and we have lots and lots
- 00:31:54of Publications so if you call us we can
- 00:31:56help you find the right publication you
- 00:31:59can also go online and Google a question
- 00:32:01and put in NCSU or North Carolina
- 00:32:04extension and our information will pop
- 00:32:07up we highly recommend that you use
- 00:32:10information from NC State or some of our
- 00:32:12neighboring
- 00:32:14um land-grant universities research
- 00:32:16institutions like Clemson or University
- 00:32:18of Virginia Georgia
- 00:32:21um any of those that are close enough to
- 00:32:23be have very similar climates and
- 00:32:27um
- 00:32:28kind of gardening years so their
- 00:32:31information is going to be applicable
- 00:32:33here as well as their own States some
- 00:32:36from California or Minnesota not so much
- 00:32:39because they have such a totally
- 00:32:41different climate than we do
- 00:32:43if you want to you can also email us
- 00:32:45with questions at mastermgardner
- 00:32:48weightgov.com
- 00:32:51um if there's another Master Gardener on
- 00:32:53the call they might be able to
- 00:32:55um let me know if that our email changed
- 00:32:58so I think that's the right one but I'm
- 00:33:00not 100 positive
- 00:33:03um there are tons and tons of
- 00:33:05um Publications for just about anything
- 00:33:08you want to grow like I mentioned we
- 00:33:10have the publication that recommends
- 00:33:12different varieties and if you're just
- 00:33:14starting out or even if you've gardened
- 00:33:16before and perhaps you haven't had great
- 00:33:18luck with some of the things that you
- 00:33:20planted perhaps you need to take a look
- 00:33:22at that list and find things that are
- 00:33:25better suited to our area
- 00:33:28so I can see that there are lots of
- 00:33:30numbers on the chat box so there might
- 00:33:32be questions Blake yes indeed there are
- 00:33:35questions and I just want to say I had
- 00:33:37to chuckle when you said you don't have
- 00:33:39to plant a lot of squash in order to get
- 00:33:40a lot of squash I've gotten to the point
- 00:33:43where I no longer plant squash and I
- 00:33:45still get too much squash because
- 00:33:46everybody else is planting squash and
- 00:33:47having to give it all away so yeah I've
- 00:33:49seen a cartoon about people sneaking
- 00:33:51around at night dropping off bags of
- 00:33:53zucchini sure so that nobody knows but
- 00:33:56yeah either you have it or you don't you
- 00:34:00know okay so one question we had was Are
- 00:34:03there specific materials for containers
- 00:34:05that you recommend When taking into
- 00:34:07consideration food safety
- 00:34:10um no not particularly
- 00:34:13um
- 00:34:15that is a good question though I've just
- 00:34:17bought commercial
- 00:34:19um Planters and you may want to wash
- 00:34:22them out first in case there are some
- 00:34:24some residue from the production of them
- 00:34:26or from shipping them again make sure
- 00:34:29you have the holes and if you're using
- 00:34:31clay pots you need to be careful about
- 00:34:34the watering even more careful because
- 00:34:36that clay will
- 00:34:38um let the moisture Escape more easily
- 00:34:41so if you're using clay pots you're
- 00:34:44probably going to have to water them
- 00:34:46daily
- 00:34:48um because they're going to dry out so
- 00:34:49much faster
- 00:34:51for sure uh so you did talk a bit about
- 00:34:54how to keep deer out and somebody had a
- 00:34:56question about generally how to avoid
- 00:34:58deer but what about um deer repellent
- 00:35:00sprays have you do you know anything
- 00:35:02about those if they're effective or not
- 00:35:04um there are some again I mentioned they
- 00:35:08they get used to just about anything
- 00:35:10um and you've probably heard if you're
- 00:35:12battling deer in your garden you've
- 00:35:14probably talked to friends and you've
- 00:35:16got half a dozen or so different methods
- 00:35:18that people recommend and people swear
- 00:35:20by
- 00:35:21um the thing is those deer will probably
- 00:35:24come back at some point
- 00:35:27um there are some we can't recommend any
- 00:35:30specific products but there's one that's
- 00:35:32made locally in Chapel Hill
- 00:35:35um I can't give you the name of it but
- 00:35:38um I've had a lot of good luck with that
- 00:35:40and they make
- 00:35:42um they make some for different
- 00:35:45um animals and I'm gonna have to try the
- 00:35:47the rabbit one because the rabbits last
- 00:35:49year were so obnoxious and
- 00:35:55it wouldn't bother me so much if the
- 00:35:56animals came and ate
- 00:35:58whatever they needed but when the
- 00:36:00squirrels come through and eat a bite
- 00:36:03out of every tomato that that's rude
- 00:36:06um so and and rabbits tend to do that
- 00:36:09too rather than eating an entire plant
- 00:36:11they'll nod off at the base where it's
- 00:36:13tender and new and leave all the
- 00:36:16remnants laying on the the ground to
- 00:36:19make me cry and it's like you know if
- 00:36:21you ate one of these leaves I could be
- 00:36:23patient with you but
- 00:36:26no kidding the nerve of some animals
- 00:36:29exactly
- 00:36:31okay someone asks can fresh young weeds
- 00:36:34no near seeding be put on compost piles
- 00:36:36they always hate to waste them
- 00:36:40um yeah so the way it works with a
- 00:36:42compost pile is I mentioned that you
- 00:36:45need water and it creates heat there is
- 00:36:48actually a lot of activity going on
- 00:36:50inside that compost pile both chemically
- 00:36:53and with organisms that are chewing that
- 00:36:55stuff up it's like a whole village in
- 00:36:58there and you're turning it ideally you
- 00:37:01would turn it regularly and when you do
- 00:37:04that you will find that the compost is
- 00:37:06actually really warm on the inside it
- 00:37:09does need to heat up like that that's a
- 00:37:10natural thing and if when it gets warm
- 00:37:13enough it will kill a lot of those weed
- 00:37:15seeds
- 00:37:17um I don't know the exact temperatures
- 00:37:18that it needs to reach and I've never
- 00:37:20checked the temperature of my compost
- 00:37:22pile
- 00:37:24um so weed seeds
- 00:37:26there are some that I would not put in
- 00:37:28there I would not put any stilt grass
- 00:37:30there because silk grass seeds are
- 00:37:33notoriously long-lived
- 00:37:35um but you know if it's stuff in my
- 00:37:37grass that is not terribly aggressive
- 00:37:39and I don't really care about I don't I
- 00:37:41don't worry about that I put that in if
- 00:37:44it's diseased plant material I would not
- 00:37:46put that into a compost pile either
- 00:37:48because you can't guarantee that it's
- 00:37:50going to break down well enough
- 00:37:53okay someone asked do you need to remove
- 00:37:56the cover crops when you're ready to
- 00:37:58plant for the new season
- 00:38:00um it's a good idea to kind of turn them
- 00:38:02under if you can
- 00:38:04um they're going to naturally die out a
- 00:38:07little bit so you can plant in them
- 00:38:10again the more you turn that soil over
- 00:38:12the more you're introducing more weeds
- 00:38:15into your um your garden area so
- 00:38:19um you may want to hand pull them out if
- 00:38:22they're in the way of you planting the
- 00:38:24new stuff especially Rose of crops
- 00:38:28sure and I would just like to add that
- 00:38:30it probably depends on the type of cover
- 00:38:32crop you're using like if you're using
- 00:38:34Clover because you want the uh the
- 00:38:36nitrogen fixation that it provides the
- 00:38:38clover will fix nitrogen but if you
- 00:38:40don't then work that Clover back into
- 00:38:42the soil then that nitrogen isn't going
- 00:38:45into the soil so the Clover you
- 00:38:47absolutely need to work into your soil
- 00:38:49if however you're just growing like
- 00:38:51annual rye grass just for the sake of
- 00:38:53reducing erosion then in that case you
- 00:38:57would want to use something you'd want
- 00:38:58to crimp it down you'd use a roller
- 00:39:00crimper to crimp it down and like leave
- 00:39:02the the grass there and you can just
- 00:39:04plant in between the grass that you've
- 00:39:07rolled over and flattened and the whole
- 00:39:08point of the rolling over and the
- 00:39:10flattening of the grass is to to
- 00:39:11suppress weeds there so like you need
- 00:39:13the the grass there flat to shade out
- 00:39:16the weed seed so that it doesn't spring
- 00:39:18back up and you're more than welcome to
- 00:39:20just plant directly into the grass that
- 00:39:23you've left there okay so someone asked
- 00:39:26about well they said specifically why do
- 00:39:28my squash plants always die quickly how
- 00:39:30do I keep Vine borers away while still
- 00:39:33being organic but you mentioned several
- 00:39:35things with regards to that you
- 00:39:37mentioned chemical controls you
- 00:39:39mentioned making sure you have healthy
- 00:39:41plants and you also mentioned crop
- 00:39:43rotation somebody had an interesting
- 00:39:45question about crop rotation they said
- 00:39:47my garden is too small to rotate plants
- 00:39:51can you just skip a year and then
- 00:39:52replant them again and is one year
- 00:39:55enough
- 00:39:55foreign
- 00:39:57I do not know if one year is enough that
- 00:40:01is going to help definitely
- 00:40:03um you may want to try and do some um
- 00:40:07uh containers that year and then move
- 00:40:11out but yeah you're right a lot of us
- 00:40:13don't have a lot of space so it's always
- 00:40:15a challenge for me as well and I figure
- 00:40:17if I've moved them a little bit that's
- 00:40:19helped more than not moving them at all
- 00:40:22so
- 00:40:23um yeah I would hate to miss an entire
- 00:40:25year of growing things but
- 00:40:28um
- 00:40:31that's a tough one yeah I want to
- 00:40:34mention also the squash
- 00:40:36um Vine bores
- 00:40:38um those are such a challenge what
- 00:40:40happens is this this moth lays its eggs
- 00:40:45and right around the um the vine of the
- 00:40:50um
- 00:40:51the squash plant and the the insect
- 00:40:56is born and then bores into the vine
- 00:40:59itself and your plants are fine one day
- 00:41:03you walk out the next morning and they
- 00:41:05have flopped over and
- 00:41:08um at that point there is nothing that
- 00:41:10you can do to revive those plants I will
- 00:41:13be honest with you
- 00:41:14that is so discouraging to me I don't
- 00:41:17plant squash anymore
- 00:41:19um because it's a real challenge
- 00:41:21um there are some methods some
- 00:41:23mechanical methods where you put a um a
- 00:41:26cup around the um the plant when you
- 00:41:30plant it or a part of a cup
- 00:41:32um to try and keep them from getting to
- 00:41:35the the vine but
- 00:41:37um there is more information from the
- 00:41:39Master Gardeners about all that but that
- 00:41:41that can be a real challenge I will
- 00:41:44admit sure okay someone's asking can you
- 00:41:48use alcohol to clean smaller tools
- 00:41:53um I believe so yes
- 00:41:55um
- 00:41:56yeah any kind of uh just make sure
- 00:42:00the alcohol is going to dry off but if
- 00:42:02you're using anything else that's you
- 00:42:04know a product for cleaning make sure
- 00:42:07you've you've rinsed that off really
- 00:42:09really well because you don't want to
- 00:42:10introduce any of that into your plant
- 00:42:12material as well
- 00:42:14okay
- 00:42:15someone says I'm more interested in
- 00:42:17growing fenugreek and mustard where do I
- 00:42:20get this specific information
- 00:42:23um
- 00:42:25I would start with Master Gardeners and
- 00:42:27they can research and see
- 00:42:30um what they can find mustard is
- 00:42:31absolutely beautiful too so
- 00:42:34um sure I don't know the first plant
- 00:42:36that you mentioned but um
- 00:42:38research
- 00:42:40yeah I've used fenugreek in Indian
- 00:42:42cooking before so it does have its uses
- 00:42:45and my answer to that question would be
- 00:42:47if you have the seed packets already for
- 00:42:50those plants then the seed packet is a
- 00:42:52wealth of information on when to plant
- 00:42:54them and how long it'll take for them to
- 00:42:56mature and that kind of stuff yeah thank
- 00:42:58you for mentioning that Blake I didn't
- 00:43:00say that but you do need to carefully
- 00:43:02read your seed packets because they are
- 00:43:04going to tell you how far apart to plant
- 00:43:07your seeds How Deeply to plant your
- 00:43:10seeds not all plants are not all seeds
- 00:43:12are created equally and they have
- 00:43:14different requirements
- 00:43:16um how big the plants are going to be
- 00:43:17when they're um
- 00:43:19mature how long they take to germinate
- 00:43:22so when should you expect to start
- 00:43:23seeing things pop up
- 00:43:26um so and what their requirements are as
- 00:43:28far as sun and um water and that kind of
- 00:43:31those kinds of things and all that is
- 00:43:33really important information they put
- 00:43:35that there for a reason so make sure you
- 00:43:38um read that and I mentioned that the
- 00:43:41picture shows someone sewing a lot of
- 00:43:43seeds all together that if you've got a
- 00:43:46whole packet of seeds the inclination is
- 00:43:49often to plant them all I bought them
- 00:43:51and I want to plant them
- 00:43:53um that actually does a disservice the
- 00:43:55plants that you're trying to grow
- 00:43:56because again they're trying to compete
- 00:43:58with one another for all the good
- 00:44:00nutrients and all the light and all the
- 00:44:02water so after you've planted before
- 00:44:05they have their true leaves which is
- 00:44:07that second set of leaves that comes up
- 00:44:09you if your plants are too crowded and
- 00:44:12they're they're closer than what the
- 00:44:13seed packet recommends you actually need
- 00:44:16to go in and horror of Horrors you need
- 00:44:18to pull out and then those plants
- 00:44:21oftentimes it's best done by cutting
- 00:44:24them off rather than trying to pull them
- 00:44:25out manually because if you try and pull
- 00:44:27them out you sometimes um disturb the
- 00:44:30the roots of the plants that you want to
- 00:44:31keep
- 00:44:33okay somebody's asking if you could uh
- 00:44:36go back to the slide that shows about
- 00:44:38composting
- 00:44:40they just want to see that slide again
- 00:44:41if you don't mind
- 00:44:43and while you're doing that uh I don't
- 00:44:47know what this is but somebody's asked
- 00:44:49what do you think about the square foot
- 00:44:50gardening method
- 00:44:52that is a really amazing way to Garden
- 00:44:55it I've done it an adapted way
- 00:44:58um so what is it general what is it
- 00:44:59basically speaking
- 00:45:01um it's showing you how to
- 00:45:03um
- 00:45:05I'm sorry I don't know what my printer
- 00:45:06is doing
- 00:45:07um it's dividing your garden out so that
- 00:45:10you're doing succession gardening first
- 00:45:12of all and
- 00:45:14um
- 00:45:15and
- 00:45:17um complementary plantings so that
- 00:45:21um kind of like when you do the um the
- 00:45:24three sisters gardening you've got the
- 00:45:25beans or the corn stalk with the beans
- 00:45:27and the squash growing up together it's
- 00:45:29that kind of thing and so uh the premise
- 00:45:33is that even in a very small areas by
- 00:45:36square foot you can grow a tremendous
- 00:45:38amount of food
- 00:45:43okay so somebody's asking well they say
- 00:45:47I have chickens and from what I've read
- 00:45:48their poop is too hot to put in my
- 00:45:51garden unless it sits for a year is this
- 00:45:53true yeah that's why I was saying that
- 00:45:55compost has to I mean excuse me
- 00:45:58um for animal fertilizer needs a compost
- 00:46:01itself and there are
- 00:46:03um different there's a schedule for
- 00:46:04different kinds of manure so make sure
- 00:46:07you do um look at that
- 00:46:10awesome okay and I believe this is the
- 00:46:13last question but of course there are
- 00:46:15going to be more that come in since I've
- 00:46:16said that but how deep should the soil
- 00:46:19be in raised garden beds
- 00:46:22that's a really good question
- 00:46:24um typically
- 00:46:26um at least eight inches
- 00:46:29um and there is lots of good information
- 00:46:32on how to to build raised beds
- 00:46:36um but yeah they need they need to be
- 00:46:38able to have enough room for roots
- 00:46:41now they're going to be some plants like
- 00:46:43corn comes to mind that needs a lot more
- 00:46:46space and probably would not work in a
- 00:46:49raised bed but then I'm sure there are
- 00:46:51those of you who have done it in some
- 00:46:53way and had success so um and gardening
- 00:46:56is a lot of trial and error so I'll you
- 00:46:59know we want to give you research-based
- 00:47:02information to help you be more
- 00:47:04successful but none of this is
- 00:47:06guaranteed mother nature and all these
- 00:47:09other things that we've mentioned want
- 00:47:11to to chime in and sometimes thwart our
- 00:47:14efforts and their microclimates so you
- 00:47:17may have a spot that is just not going
- 00:47:19to grow some things well
- 00:47:21yeah thinking speaking of thwarted
- 00:47:24efforts somebody's asking how can I get
- 00:47:26out of control Mint back into control
- 00:47:29that their husband removed a barrier pot
- 00:47:31and without realizing it now they've got
- 00:47:34a weed problem on their hands yeah mint
- 00:47:36is um notorious for being very
- 00:47:38aggressive and very much a bully in the
- 00:47:40garden so things in the mint family it
- 00:47:42is recommended that you plant a
- 00:47:44container into the ground if you're
- 00:47:46going to have it in the ground and have
- 00:47:48the the mint
- 00:47:50um in that too
- 00:47:52um and it will escape on its own so it
- 00:47:54may not just be your husband that did
- 00:47:56that
- 00:47:57um you're gonna have to vigorously dig
- 00:47:59it out and it's going to take a while
- 00:48:03um because uh it it that's just the way
- 00:48:06it rolls and I've got
- 00:48:08um bee balm which is in the same family
- 00:48:10that I'm still pulling out year after
- 00:48:14year because it it thrives
- 00:48:18okay and this will be the last question
- 00:48:21regardless of what other questions come
- 00:48:23in
- 00:48:24they say are there crops that you cannot
- 00:48:26rotate to another spot like if you have
- 00:48:28tomatoes in one spot if you moving
- 00:48:31cucumbers is that bad or
- 00:48:34does it defeat the purpose
- 00:48:38I'm sorry I'm not sure I quite
- 00:48:39understand that about rotating so like
- 00:48:41if you're rotating crops uh uh
- 00:48:46well okay I can't think of any specific
- 00:48:48examples to like gardening but say if
- 00:48:51you're growing let's say you're growing
- 00:48:53tobacco in one spot in your garden and
- 00:48:56then you want to rotate your crops but
- 00:48:57you rotate Tomatoes into it but since
- 00:49:00they're the same family they share a lot
- 00:49:02of the same diseases and stuff so that
- 00:49:04wouldn't really be much of a rotation so
- 00:49:07she's asking are there like
- 00:49:11things that you absolutely cannot plant
- 00:49:12back to back yeah yeah
- 00:49:16um
- 00:49:16no again the best method is going to be
- 00:49:19to rotate but you know we've already
- 00:49:21spoken to the fact that sometimes you
- 00:49:23just don't have the space for that
- 00:49:25um I I think that I would look at trying
- 00:49:28to do some containers elsewhere
- 00:49:31um so that you can avoid having them
- 00:49:34um in the same place I don't know where
- 00:49:36the mulch thing is so I'm gonna
- 00:49:39what I'm going to recommend is that with
- 00:49:41all these extra questions and these
- 00:49:43specific questions call our hotline and
- 00:49:46no it's not really a hotline it's just a
- 00:49:48phone line
- 00:49:49but call us and ask and we can send you
- 00:49:53the links to the um information or like
- 00:49:55I said you can Google some of this but
- 00:49:58sometimes it's easier to talk to
- 00:50:00somebody and be able to talk this out
- 00:50:01and think through all the other
- 00:50:03questions that you have while you've got
- 00:50:05somebody on the phone
- 00:50:07um or if it's in the middle of the night
- 00:50:08it just Dawns on you email us and we'll
- 00:50:11be glad to get back with you
