Carl Jung's The Shadow: Become Who You Are Afraid To Be
概要
TLDRThe text explores Carl Jung's concept of the Shadow, which represents the hidden aspects of our personality that we often deny or reject. This unconscious part influences our behavior and emotions, making it crucial to understand and integrate these traits to achieve psychological wholeness. The discussion includes the importance of recognizing both personal and collective Shadows—societal issues stemming from shared human experiences. Engaging in practices like self-reflection and understanding emotional reactions can help individuals confront their Shadows, leading to personal growth and preventing historical patterns from repeating.

タイムライン
- 00:00:00 - 00:05:00
The inevitability of a significant change in our psychological attitudes arises from our need for deeper understanding of human nature, as we often remain unaware of the dangers posed by our own nature. This lack of awareness can hinder our personal growth and awareness.
- 00:05:00 - 00:10:00
Carl Jung's concept of the 'Shadow' represents the hidden aspects of our personality that we reject or deny, such as repressed desires and negative traits. This Shadow significantly influences our behavior, often in ways we do not recognize, leading to unacknowledged barriers that affect our intentions.
- 00:10:00 - 00:15:00
The Shadow's formation is deeply connected to societal norms, personal experiences, and the repression of unacceptable emotions. Jung states that everyone carries a Shadow, which becomes darker the less it is acknowledged, potentially leading to sudden outbursts of repressed emotions.
- 00:15:00 - 00:20:00
Jung emphasizes the importance of differentiating between the 'ego' (the conscious identity) and the 'Self' (the complete personality encompassing both conscious and unconscious elements). He reflects on his own experiences with emotions and urges to explore how they inform our personalities.
- 00:20:00 - 00:25:00
Jung introduces the concept of 'Persona', the social mask that adapts to societal expectations, and contrasts it with the 'anima' and 'animus', representing the feminine and masculine aspects of the unconscious respectively. He discusses how these elements interact within our psyche, shaping our identity.
- 00:25:00 - 00:30:00
The exploration of the personal Shadow not only reveals our shortcomings but points out the valuable qualities we often suppress. Recognizing these traits can lead to greater psychological wholeness and understanding of our emotional triggers and experiences.
- 00:30:00 - 00:39:28
The discussion shifts to the collective Shadow, representing the darker aspects of society and culture that contradict collective values. Jung advocates for individual self-awareness as a path to confronting the collective Shadow, thus fostering responsibility and healing in both personal and societal contexts.

- 00:00:01one thing is sure a great change of our
- 00:00:04psychological attitude is
- 00:00:07imminent that is certain why because we
- 00:00:11need more we need more psychology we
- 00:00:14need more understanding of human nature
- 00:00:18because the only real danger that exists
- 00:00:21is man
- 00:00:24himself he is the great danger and we
- 00:00:28are pitifully unaware of it we know
- 00:00:32nothing of man far too
- 00:00:35little his tyy should be studed because
- 00:00:39we are the origin of all coming
- 00:00:43evil have you ever felt like something
- 00:00:45inside you is holding you back
- 00:00:47sabotaging your best efforts what if I
- 00:00:49told you there's a hidden side of your
- 00:00:51personality lurking in the shadows
- 00:00:54influencing your every move through
- 00:00:56synchronicity this hidden side is what
- 00:00:58Carl Yung calls the Shadow the shadow is
- 00:01:01a part of our unconscious mind that
- 00:01:03contains all the aspects of ourselves we
- 00:01:05reject or deny including repressed
- 00:01:08desires instincts weaknesses and parts
- 00:01:11of our personality we consider negative
- 00:01:13or undesirable these hidden traits
- 00:01:16influence our behavior and emotions in
- 00:01:18ways we often do not realize to truly
- 00:01:22understand the impact of the Shadow
- 00:01:24let's delve deeper into how it forms and
- 00:01:26affects our lives Yung tells us in his
- 00:01:28collected works psychology and religion
- 00:01:31unfortunately there can be no doubt that
- 00:01:33man is on the whole less good than he
- 00:01:35imagines himself or wants to be everyone
- 00:01:38carries a shadow and the less it is
- 00:01:40embodied in the individual's conscious
- 00:01:42life the blacker and denser it is if an
- 00:01:46inferiority is conscious one always has
- 00:01:48a chance to correct it furthermore it is
- 00:01:51constantly in contact with other
- 00:01:52interests so that it is continually
- 00:01:54subjected to modifications but if it is
- 00:01:57repressed and isolated from
- 00:01:58Consciousness it never gets corrected
- 00:02:01everyone carries a shadow and the less
- 00:02:03it is embodied in the individual's
- 00:02:05conscious life the blacker and denser it
- 00:02:07is if an inferiority is conscious one
- 00:02:10always has a chance to correct it but if
- 00:02:13it is repressed and isolated from
- 00:02:14Consciousness it never gets corrected
- 00:02:17and is liable to burst forth suddenly in
- 00:02:20a moment of unawareness ultimately it
- 00:02:23creates an unconscious barrier
- 00:02:25undermining even our best intentions
- 00:02:28often revealed through meaningful
- 00:02:30coincidences the shadow forms through
- 00:02:33societal Norms personal experiences and
- 00:02:35repression from a young age we learn
- 00:02:38which behaviors thoughts and emotions
- 00:02:40are unacceptable to our family and
- 00:02:42Society pushing these traits into our
- 00:02:44unconscious mind for example a child
- 00:02:47told that anger is bad might repress
- 00:02:49their anger making it part of their
- 00:02:51Shadow the shadow holds various
- 00:02:53qualities strengths and potentials if
- 00:02:56left unexplored these aspects can lead
- 00:02:58to a diminished personality creating
- 00:03:00unconscious obstacles that hinder the
- 00:03:02development and expression of these
- 00:03:04positive traits understanding that
- 00:03:06everyone carries a shadow helps us
- 00:03:09recognize its profound impact on our
- 00:03:12lives next let's explore the different
- 00:03:15types of Shadows beginning with the
- 00:03:17personal
- 00:03:18shadow in analyzing a patient you uh
- 00:03:23make uh typical uh experiences namely
- 00:03:29there is a s of typical way in which the
- 00:03:36integration of
- 00:03:37Po takes
- 00:03:40place Nam the this the average way is
- 00:03:46that
- 00:03:48um through the analysis of dreams for
- 00:03:51instance you become acquainted with the
- 00:03:55contents of the cultures I already told
- 00:03:57you
- 00:03:58this to begin is all personal material
- 00:04:02now that we've introduced the concept
- 00:04:04let's delve deeper into the different
- 00:04:05types of Shadows well the ego is
- 00:04:09supposed to be the representative of the
- 00:04:12real person but as I say for instance in
- 00:04:15the case where B knows of a but a
- 00:04:20doesn't know of B yeah in that case one
- 00:04:23would say the ego is more on the side of
- 00:04:25C because the ego has a more complete
- 00:04:28knowledge and a is
- 00:04:30uh a split of personality you see when I
- 00:04:34say self then you must think of I myself
- 00:04:39because that is only your
- 00:04:41empirical self and that is covered by
- 00:04:44the term ego ego but when it is matter
- 00:04:47of the S then it is matter of a
- 00:04:50personality that is more complete than
- 00:04:53the ego because the ego is only consist
- 00:04:56of what you are appr of Y differenti
- 00:04:59Ates between the self and the ego the
- 00:05:02ego represents our conscious identity
- 00:05:05while the self is a more comprehensive
- 00:05:07and complete representation of our
- 00:05:09entire personality including both
- 00:05:11conscious and unconscious
- 00:05:13elements now that was a very serious
- 00:05:16thing to me because what else then you
- 00:05:19see
- 00:05:21and I hated that fellow and that was the
- 00:05:25the only man I could have killed you
- 00:05:27know if I had met him one at a dark
- 00:05:30corner I would have shown something of
- 00:05:33what I could do did you often have
- 00:05:35violent thoughts about people when you
- 00:05:37were young no not exactly only when they
- 00:05:40got mad well then I beat them up and did
- 00:05:44you up and get
- 00:05:45mad not so often but then for good you
- 00:05:50were you were very strong and big I
- 00:05:53imagine yes I was pretty strong and you
- 00:05:55know Reed in the country with those B
- 00:05:58boys was rough kind of life and and I I
- 00:06:03would would have been capable of of of
- 00:06:06violence I know I was a bit afraid of
- 00:06:09it so I I rather try to avoid the
- 00:06:13critical situations because I didn't
- 00:06:15trust myself once I was attacked by uh
- 00:06:18about seven boys and I got mad and I
- 00:06:23took one and just Swang him around with
- 00:06:26his legs you know and and and beat down
- 00:06:29four of them and then they they were
- 00:06:32satisfied Yung is reflecting on his own
- 00:06:34capacity for violence and aggression
- 00:06:36during his youth he acknowledges his
- 00:06:38strong emotions and physical
- 00:06:39capabilities but also his fear of losing
- 00:06:42control leading him to avoid situations
- 00:06:45that could provoke violent behavior is
- 00:06:48Shadow now that we understand the basic
- 00:06:50concept of the Shadow let's explore
- 00:06:52Jung's model of the psyche further I
- 00:06:54wonder if you would uh mind telling us a
- 00:06:56little bit about how you uh through this
- 00:06:59term Persona well this is
- 00:07:03a a practical concept we need in
- 00:07:07elucidating people's
- 00:07:10relation um I
- 00:07:12noticed with my patients particularly
- 00:07:16with uh people that are in uh in public
- 00:07:20life that they have a certain way of
- 00:07:24presenting themselves so the Persona is
- 00:07:28partially uh
- 00:07:30the result of the demands Society has
- 00:07:34and on the other side it is a compromise
- 00:07:38with what one likes to be or with what
- 00:07:43or as one likes to appear
- 00:07:46say now this is not the real personality
- 00:07:50in spite of the fact that people will
- 00:07:51assure you that it that is all quite
- 00:07:54real and quite honest yet it is not
- 00:08:00now such a uh performance or
- 00:08:06say the performance of the
- 00:08:10Persona is quite all right as long as
- 00:08:13you know that you are not identical with
- 00:08:15the way in which you appear in yung's
- 00:08:18model of the psyche there are various
- 00:08:20personified structures that interact
- 00:08:22with one another in our inner world two
- 00:08:25of these the Persona and the anima
- 00:08:27animus are relational the Persona
- 00:08:29relates to the external world and the
- 00:08:31anima animus to the internal world the
- 00:08:34ego which is primarily body based and
- 00:08:37may be understood as the executive part
- 00:08:39of the personality stands alongside the
- 00:08:41shadow together the ego and the shadow
- 00:08:44are Central to our identity the anima is
- 00:08:47the feminine aspect present in the
- 00:08:49unconscious of men it represents the
- 00:08:52inner feminine side and influences men's
- 00:08:54interactions with women and their own
- 00:08:56emotional life its opposite the Animus
- 00:08:59is the masculine aspect present in the
- 00:09:01unconscious of women it represents the
- 00:09:04inner masculine side and influences
- 00:09:06women's interactions with men and their
- 00:09:08own assertiveness and reasoning to
- 00:09:11understand how our unconscious mind
- 00:09:13shapes our reality let's hear from Jung
- 00:09:15on the interplay between personal and
- 00:09:17Collective
- 00:09:19Shadows TI has two conditions two
- 00:09:22important conditions one is the envi
- 00:09:26Environmental influence and the other is
- 00:09:30the given fact of the the of the psyche
- 00:09:34as it is BN the self is really a term
- 00:09:38that designates the whole personality
- 00:09:41because the whole personality of man is
- 00:09:45Indescribable he his Consciousness can
- 00:09:48be described his unconscious cannot be
- 00:09:51described because the unconscious as I
- 00:09:53must repeat myself is always unconscious
- 00:09:56and this is really unconscious really
- 00:09:58does not
- 00:09:59KN and so we don't know our uh our
- 00:10:04unconscious personality we have hints we
- 00:10:07have uh certain ideas but we don't know
- 00:10:12it really nobody can say where man
- 00:10:15ends that is the the beauty of it you
- 00:10:18know it's it's very interesting Yung is
- 00:10:21emphasizing that our unconscious
- 00:10:23personality remains largely unknown to
- 00:10:25us despite occasional insights he
- 00:10:28explains that the psych is shaped by
- 00:10:30both environmental influences and
- 00:10:32inherent psychological factors present
- 00:10:34from
- 00:10:36birth well
- 00:10:38chiefly his purely personal approach and
- 00:10:43his disregard of uh the historical
- 00:10:46conditions of man you see we depend
- 00:10:49largely upon our
- 00:10:53history uh we are shaped through
- 00:10:58education through the of the parents
- 00:11:00which are by no means always
- 00:11:03personal they were prejudiced or they
- 00:11:06were influenced by historical ideas or
- 00:11:10what I call dominance
- 00:11:13and and that is a most decisive factor
- 00:11:17in
- 00:11:18Psychology we are not of today or of
- 00:11:21yesterday we are of an IM men's age Yung
- 00:11:25is discussing his disagreement with an
- 00:11:26approach that focuses solely on the
- 00:11:28personal aspects of psychology
- 00:11:30neglecting the historical and Collective
- 00:11:32influences he emphasizes that our psyche
- 00:11:35is significantly shaped by historical
- 00:11:38context parental influence and societal
- 00:11:41Norms which are deeply ingrained and
- 00:11:43impact our psychological development
- 00:11:45let's now take a closer look at the
- 00:11:47personal shadow in the collected works
- 00:11:49of CG Yung volume 9 part 2 ion Carl Yung
- 00:11:53says closer examination of the dark
- 00:11:55characteristics that is the
- 00:11:57inferiorities constituting The Shadow
- 00:11:59Shadow reveals that they have an
- 00:12:01emotional nature a kind of autonomy and
- 00:12:04accordingly an obsessive or better
- 00:12:06possessive quality these are usually
- 00:12:08aspects of the personality which one
- 00:12:10tries to hide repress and deny to
- 00:12:13oneself and others because they are
- 00:12:14things which one has no wish to be
- 00:12:17failing to recognize and deal with our
- 00:12:19shadow can lead to significant problems
- 00:12:22think about a time when you felt an
- 00:12:23intense irrational emotion was it really
- 00:12:26about what was happening at that moment
- 00:12:28or was it something deeper let me know
- 00:12:30in the comments the shadow is most
- 00:12:32visible when one is in the grip of
- 00:12:34anxiety or other emotions for example
- 00:12:37under the influence of alcohol one may
- 00:12:39suddenly blurt out a hostile remark
- 00:12:41during a friendly conversation when we
- 00:12:43do not want to assimilate what we
- 00:12:45despise we project it onto others many
- 00:12:48people refuse to recognize their Shadow
- 00:12:50so completely that the ego is not even
- 00:12:52aware of Shadow behavior and thus has no
- 00:12:55possibility of commanding it under these
- 00:12:57conditions the shadow is is autonomous
- 00:13:00and may Express itself in inexplicable
- 00:13:02moods irritability and cruelty and so uh
- 00:13:06the the psychical events are facts are
- 00:13:09realities and when you observe the
- 00:13:13stream of images
- 00:13:15Within You observe an aspect of the
- 00:13:19world of the world within because the p
- 00:13:25you know if you understand it as a
- 00:13:30phenomenon that takes place in soall
- 00:13:32living
- 00:13:34bodies
- 00:13:36uh then it is a quality of matter as our
- 00:13:42body consists of matter we discover that
- 00:13:45this matter has another aspect namely a
- 00:13:48pyic aspect let's now explore the
- 00:13:51positive aspects of understanding our
- 00:13:52shadow from the book CG Yung speaking
- 00:13:56interviews and encounters When You
- 00:13:58observe the world you see people you see
- 00:14:00houses you see the sky you see tangible
- 00:14:03objects but when you observe yourself
- 00:14:05within you see moving images a world of
- 00:14:08images generally known as fantasies yet
- 00:14:11these fantasies are facts you see it is
- 00:14:14a fact that a man has such and such a
- 00:14:16fantasy such a tangible fact that when a
- 00:14:18man has a certain fantasy another man
- 00:14:21may lose his life or a bridge may be
- 00:14:23built these houses were all fantasies
- 00:14:26everything you do here all of the houses
- 00:14:28everything was fantasy to begin with and
- 00:14:30fantasy has a proper reality this should
- 00:14:32not be forgotten fantasy is not nothing
- 00:14:35it is of course not a tangible object
- 00:14:38but it is a fact
- 00:14:39nevertheless there is an impersonal stum
- 00:14:43in our p and I can tell you an example
- 00:14:48we had a p a
- 00:14:50patient in the world he was quiet but
- 00:14:55completely dissociated schizophrenic and
- 00:14:58he was
- 00:14:59in the clinic already for over 20 years
- 00:15:02he had come into the clinic as a matter
- 00:15:04of fact being a young man a little
- 00:15:08CL and there's no particular education
- 00:15:11and once I came to the war and and he
- 00:15:15was obviously excited and called to me
- 00:15:16took me by the label of my coat and led
- 00:15:18me to the window uh and said now now you
- 00:15:22must see now look at it look up at the
- 00:15:25sun uh and see uh how it moves see you
- 00:15:30must move your head too like this and
- 00:15:33then you will see the the follows of the
- 00:15:39Sun and you know that's the origin of
- 00:15:42the
- 00:15:43wind and you see how the sun moves As
- 00:15:47you move your head from one side to the
- 00:15:50other now of course I didn't understand
- 00:15:52that all I thought there you are he's
- 00:15:56just crazy uh and but that case remained
- 00:16:01in my mind and four years
- 00:16:04later uh I came
- 00:16:08across uh a paper written by the German
- 00:16:18umoran who had dealt with a with the
- 00:16:22so-call mitas litery a part of the Great
- 00:16:27Parisian sorcer papos
- 00:16:29and there he U produced The U um a part
- 00:16:37of the soal M ly
- 00:16:42namely uh say there after the second
- 00:16:46prayer thou will see the how the disc of
- 00:16:49the sun
- 00:16:52unfolds and you will
- 00:16:54see hanging down from it the tube
- 00:17:00the origin of the
- 00:17:02wind and when you move thy face the face
- 00:17:06to the regions of the East it will move
- 00:17:10there and if you move your face to the
- 00:17:13region of the West it will follow
- 00:17:16you and instantly I know I knew now this
- 00:17:20is it this is the vision of my patient
- 00:17:24but how could you be sure that your
- 00:17:26patient wasn't unconsciously recalling
- 00:17:28something that somebody had told you oh
- 00:17:30no quite out of question because that
- 00:17:32thing was not known it was in a in a in
- 00:17:34a magic papos in
- 00:17:37Paris and it wasn't even published it
- 00:17:40was only published four years later
- 00:17:42after I had observed it with my patient
- 00:17:44and this you felt proved that there was
- 00:17:47a an unconscious which was something
- 00:17:49more than personal oh well that was not
- 00:17:51a proof to me but it was a hint and I
- 00:17:54took the hint yes these examples are
- 00:17:56crucial because they highlight Carl
- 00:17:58yung's deep understanding of the
- 00:17:59unconscious mind and how it affects our
- 00:18:01behavior and perceptions by showing that
- 00:18:04fantasies and dreams have a tangible
- 00:18:06reality Yung stresses that the
- 00:18:08unconscious is not just a storage place
- 00:18:10for forgotten or repressed thoughts
- 00:18:12instead it is an active and Powerful
- 00:18:14part of our psyche that significantly
- 00:18:16shapes our experiences and actions this
- 00:18:19helps us understand that our inner world
- 00:18:22is just as real and influential as the
- 00:18:24external world we see around us
- 00:18:26throughout his writing Yung refers to
- 00:18:28the importance of developing awareness
- 00:18:30of the shadow in Psychotherapy and its
- 00:18:32projections in the individual's life
- 00:18:35although the shadow is usually perceived
- 00:18:37as negative it can also be positive in
- 00:18:39fact exploring our shadow gives us
- 00:18:42access to many positive qualities Yung
- 00:18:45explains to us with these quotes from
- 00:18:46the collected works of CG Yung volume 9
- 00:18:49part two the first of these is the
- 00:18:52shadow that hidden repressed for the
- 00:18:54most part inferior and guilt-laden
- 00:18:56personality whose ultimate ramification
- 00:18:58ations reach back into the realm of our
- 00:19:00animal ancestors and so comprise the
- 00:19:03whole historical aspect of the
- 00:19:04unconscious if it has been believed
- 00:19:06hitherto that the human Shadow was the
- 00:19:09source of evil it can now be ascertained
- 00:19:11on closer investigation that the
- 00:19:13unconscious man that is his shadow does
- 00:19:16not consist only of morally
- 00:19:17reprehensible Tendencies but also
- 00:19:19displays a number of good qualities such
- 00:19:22as normal instincts appropriate
- 00:19:24reactions realistic insights creative
- 00:19:27impulses Etc man is not complete if he
- 00:19:32is not conscious of uh that aspect of
- 00:19:40things so is see a man is not complete
- 00:19:45when he lives in a world of statistical
- 00:19:48truth he must live in a world of his
- 00:19:52biological truth that is is biological
- 00:19:54Tru that is not uh um nearly satis
- 00:20:00speaks it is the the expression of what
- 00:20:05he really is as what he feel himself
- 00:20:10these explanations highlight yung's
- 00:20:12views on the Shadow and the self
- 00:20:14emphasizing the importance of
- 00:20:15acknowledging and integrating all
- 00:20:17aspects of our personality to achieve
- 00:20:19psychological
- 00:20:21wholeness one of yung's closest
- 00:20:23collaborators Mari Louise Von France
- 00:20:25writes in man and his symbols part three
- 00:20:28the process of individuation the
- 00:20:29realization of the Shadow the shadow is
- 00:20:32not necessarily always an opponent in
- 00:20:35fact he is exactly like any human being
- 00:20:37with whom one has to get along sometimes
- 00:20:39by giving in sometimes by resisting
- 00:20:42sometimes by giving love whatever the
- 00:20:44situation requires the shadow becomes
- 00:20:47hostile only when he is ignored or
- 00:20:49misunderstood well they in Practical
- 00:20:51life they emerge but the personal Shadow
- 00:20:54is the personal shortcomings of uh
- 00:20:59things which every human being could be
- 00:21:02conscious of which is not archetypal and
- 00:21:05therefore not a mystery for instance
- 00:21:07such things as Greed for money or
- 00:21:11jealousy jealousy is one of main aspects
- 00:21:15of the Shadow or laziness sloppiness uh
- 00:21:20unrelatedness sentimentality and whatnot
- 00:21:23inferiorities which everybody has but uh
- 00:21:28prefers not to know about as to the
- 00:21:32personal nature of the unconscious the
- 00:21:35personal quality of the unconscious in a
- 00:21:38given case where you take an
- 00:21:41ex well his unconscious has then an
- 00:21:46introverted quality because all the
- 00:21:48extroverted qualities are played in
- 00:21:50Consciousness and and
- 00:21:53in has qualities the the same
- 00:21:58uh that gave me a lead of the diagnostic
- 00:22:03value it
- 00:22:05uh it help me to understand my patience
- 00:22:09both Marie Lise Von France and Carl Yung
- 00:22:11collectively stress that acknowledging
- 00:22:13understanding and integrating the shadow
- 00:22:15a complex emotional and personal part of
- 00:22:18our unconscious is essential for
- 00:22:20achieving psychological wholeness and
- 00:22:22self-awareness to better understand this
- 00:22:24let's visualize the shadow imagine your
- 00:22:26Shadow as a dark figure following ing
- 00:22:28you around at first it seems
- 00:22:30intimidating but as you turn to face it
- 00:22:33you realize it's just a part of you that
- 00:22:34needs understanding and compassion for
- 00:22:37instance a person might believe that
- 00:22:39being assertive is being rude or
- 00:22:41aggressive losing the qualities of
- 00:22:43confidence and the ability to speak up
- 00:22:45for himself in an honest and respectful
- 00:22:47way which in turn may lead to less
- 00:22:50proactivity make it more difficult to
- 00:22:52get a raise or job promotion struggle
- 00:22:54with money and so on so when a person
- 00:22:57encounters an assertive person deep down
- 00:23:00he feels resentment and guilt which
- 00:23:02makes his shadow blacker and denser
- 00:23:04these valuable aspects ought to be
- 00:23:06assimilated into actual experience and
- 00:23:08not repressed it is up to the ego to
- 00:23:11give up its
- 00:23:12Pride because your un conscious is in a
- 00:23:15compensat relation to
- 00:23:17Consciousness and
- 00:23:19uh and after a while you get the full
- 00:23:22picture and if he has a full picture and
- 00:23:26uh has the the necessary moral
- 00:23:30stamina well then we can be
- 00:23:34cure but in the end it is a moral
- 00:23:40question it is the
- 00:23:42manifestation of the situation of the
- 00:23:44uncons look back from the uncons to put
- 00:23:47this into practice let's talk about
- 00:23:49actionable advice for shadow work to
- 00:23:52start your own shadow work try keeping a
- 00:23:54journal write down moments when you felt
- 00:23:56a strong emotional reaction and reflect
- 00:23:59on what might have caused it over time
- 00:24:01you'll start to see patterns that reveal
- 00:24:03your hidden Shadow observe your
- 00:24:05emotional reactions throughout the day
- 00:24:07when you notice a strong reaction take a
- 00:24:09moment to pause and ask yourself what
- 00:24:11triggered it write down your
- 00:24:13observations to identify
- 00:24:15patterns we also encounter our shadow in
- 00:24:18our dreams as a person of the same sex
- 00:24:20as the dreamer it is what seems to be a
- 00:24:22criticism of our character from the
- 00:24:24unconscious an inner judge of your own
- 00:24:26being that reproaches you and the result
- 00:24:29is usually embarrassed silence we must
- 00:24:31identify the contents of the Shadow and
- 00:24:34integrate them into our
- 00:24:36personality it is a
- 00:24:38regular uh
- 00:24:40observation
- 00:24:42that when you talk to an individual and
- 00:24:48this individual gives
- 00:24:51you
- 00:24:53um
- 00:24:55insight into its
- 00:24:59uh inner preoccupations interests
- 00:25:04emotions the other was uh hands
- 00:25:09over uh his uh personal
- 00:25:14complexes then you get slowly and near
- 00:25:18really into the
- 00:25:20situation of a of a sort of
- 00:25:25authority u a point of you become a
- 00:25:28point of
- 00:25:30rence Yung suggests that by confronting
- 00:25:32and integrating our shadow we can
- 00:25:35transform these repressed aspects into a
- 00:25:37source of inner Authority and
- 00:25:39self-awareness becoming a point of
- 00:25:41reference for our own personal growth
- 00:25:44let's now explore how to integrate
- 00:25:45Shadow aspects into our lives through
- 00:25:48the analysis of dreams for instance you
- 00:25:50become acquainted with the contents of
- 00:25:52the unconscious this is the process of
- 00:25:54the realization of the Shadow also known
- 00:25:57as Shadow work
- 00:25:58here Begins the painful and lengthy work
- 00:26:01of self-education one must enter into
- 00:26:03long and difficult negotiations with the
- 00:26:05shadow a work we might say that is the
- 00:26:08psychological equivalent of the labors
- 00:26:10of
- 00:26:12cyphus through Shadow work one can
- 00:26:15observe one's Shadow outwardly by
- 00:26:17watching one's emotional reactions and
- 00:26:19being radically honest about one's
- 00:26:21interactions with others and inwardly by
- 00:26:23exploring one's dreams before we delve
- 00:26:26into the fascinating ways our shadow
- 00:26:28manifests in our lives let's first
- 00:26:30understand how this hidden aspect
- 00:26:32intricately weaves into the very fabric
- 00:26:34of our identity in Carl yung's collected
- 00:26:36works volume 13 alchemical studies Yung
- 00:26:40tells us that one does not become
- 00:26:42enlightened by imagining figures of
- 00:26:44light but by making the darkness
- 00:26:46conscious the latter procedure however
- 00:26:48is disagreeable and therefore not
- 00:26:51popular with a deeper understanding of
- 00:26:53our identity it's time to witness the
- 00:26:55shadow in action let's explore how this
- 00:26:58concealed part of ourselves manifests in
- 00:27:00everyday behaviors and
- 00:27:02decisions understanding our shadow is
- 00:27:04crucial but it doesn't have to be a
- 00:27:06daunting task it can be a fascinating
- 00:27:08journey of self-discovery this allows
- 00:27:10one to become enlightened and reduces
- 00:27:12the Shadow's destructive potential not
- 00:27:15so much as it were by Waging War against
- 00:27:17the darkness but by bringing the
- 00:27:19darkness to the light the light to the
- 00:27:21darkness from Carl Jung's collected
- 00:27:23works volume 12 psychology and Alchemy
- 00:27:26there is no light without Shadow and no
- 00:27:28psychic wholeness without imperfection
- 00:27:31however scary or dark it is to confront
- 00:27:33our shadow finding truth brings relief
- 00:27:36discernment of the truth is the process
- 00:27:38of authenticity a painstaking excavation
- 00:27:41into the depths of our being to explore
- 00:27:44possibilities and limitations
- 00:27:45distortions the Buried and often
- 00:27:47forgotten parts of ourselves and
- 00:27:49abilities most people however are too
- 00:27:52indolent to think deeply about even
- 00:27:54those moral aspects of their behavior of
- 00:27:56which they are conscious let alone to
- 00:27:58consider how the unconscious affects
- 00:28:00them here's another actionable step you
- 00:28:02can take in your daily interactions
- 00:28:06practice being radically honest with
- 00:28:07yourself if you feel irritation or
- 00:28:10discomfort reflect on whether these
- 00:28:11feelings might be related to your shadow
- 00:28:14look for synchronicities that may
- 00:28:16provide
- 00:28:17insights now that we've covered the
- 00:28:19personal Shadow let's explore the
- 00:28:21collective
- 00:28:23Shadow the shadow can also consist of
- 00:28:25factors that stem from a source outside
- 00:28:28the individual's personal life here is
- 00:28:30when we stumble upon the collective
- 00:28:32Shadow the dark side or the unknown or
- 00:28:35little known aspects of a society and
- 00:28:37culture it consists of that which
- 00:28:39opposes our shared and Collective values
- 00:28:41to understand this better let's look at
- 00:28:43the broader implications of the
- 00:28:45collective Shadow archetypal ideas
- 00:28:48stream of archetypal ideas that goes on
- 00:28:52through one individual through the
- 00:28:55centuries you see it it it's it it it is
- 00:28:59like a continuous stream and that comes
- 00:29:02to the daylight in the great Ms say in
- 00:29:05in political movements or in spiritual
- 00:29:09movements
- 00:29:11um for instance in the time before
- 00:29:15Reformation uh people dreamt of the
- 00:29:20great change and that's the reason why
- 00:29:23such great Transformations could be
- 00:29:25predicted yeah uh if uh somebody has
- 00:29:28been clever enough to see what is going
- 00:29:31on in people's mind in the unconscious
- 00:29:36mind would be able to predict it for I
- 00:29:39have predicted the Nazi rising in
- 00:29:42Germany through the observation of my
- 00:29:44German patients they had dreams in which
- 00:29:48the whole thing was
- 00:29:50anticipated and and is considerable
- 00:29:53detail the collective Shadow a vast and
- 00:29:56often horrifying aspect of human life
- 00:29:58inflicts immense harm on both humanity
- 00:30:00and the natural world leaving lasting
- 00:30:03effects across Generations manifesting
- 00:30:06through projected Darkness violence
- 00:30:08oppression and denial of responsibility
- 00:30:10it emerges in Wars genocides and
- 00:30:13cultural deaths this pervasive yet
- 00:30:15elusive interdimensional Force breeds
- 00:30:18atrocities persecution and widespread
- 00:30:21suffering hiding under seemingly
- 00:30:22benevolent actions like language
- 00:30:24enforcement outwardly it shows as
- 00:30:27physical suffering poverty and crime
- 00:30:29while inwardly it Fosters self-hatred
- 00:30:31depression and a desire for Revenge
- 00:30:34causing others to endure similar
- 00:30:36suffering let's dive deeper into the
- 00:30:38collective Shadow and its relation to
- 00:30:41evil the collective Shadow has long been
- 00:30:43labeled as evil akin to the devil in
- 00:30:46Christian tradition where possession
- 00:30:48strips away one's Humanity replacing it
- 00:30:50with a demonic nature for Yung the
- 00:30:52primary response to such evil lies in
- 00:30:54the Relentless quest for self-knowledge
- 00:30:56and whole Ness each individual must
- 00:31:00recognize the full spectrum of their
- 00:31:02capabilities knowing both the extent of
- 00:31:04the good they can achieve and the
- 00:31:06potential crimes they are capable of
- 00:31:09committing you know every society has
- 00:31:12Collective problems Collective
- 00:31:14convictions and so on now we are very
- 00:31:18much influenced by them because you
- 00:31:20belong to a certain political part to a
- 00:31:22certain confession and and that can be a
- 00:31:28serious determinant of your behavior now
- 00:31:31as as personal conflict doesn't touch
- 00:31:33upon it it's no question it doesn't
- 00:31:37appear but the moment you transcend your
- 00:31:41personal sphere and come to your un
- 00:31:44personal determinance say to the
- 00:31:46question a political question or any
- 00:31:49other social question uh which really
- 00:31:53matters to you then you are confronted
- 00:31:56with a collective problem then you have
- 00:31:58Collective things when there is an issue
- 00:32:00known in a particular society it can be
- 00:32:03called a shadow issue if there is
- 00:32:05evidence of denial projection and a lack
- 00:32:07of taking individual and Collective
- 00:32:10responsibility therefore taking
- 00:32:12responsibility morally politically and
- 00:32:14spiritually is particularly crucial the
- 00:32:17courage with which we bear our Darkness
- 00:32:18frees others from having to carry it for
- 00:32:20us to illustrate let's discuss dealing
- 00:32:23with the past and taking
- 00:32:25responsibility to respond to massive
- 00:32:27historical suffering Wars genocides
- 00:32:30holocausts and pervasive oppression the
- 00:32:32effects of which persist we must learn
- 00:32:35much as human beings denial often
- 00:32:37connected with a wish to get on with
- 00:32:39things and put the past behind us is the
- 00:32:42most common approach and usually the
- 00:32:44first
- 00:32:44reaction many attempts have been made to
- 00:32:47deal with painful pasts through public
- 00:32:49apologies repentance reparation payments
- 00:32:52pilgrimages to places of suffering Etc
- 00:32:54but how do we integrate the shadow
- 00:32:56deeply and broadly Within in a
- 00:32:58population rather than symbolically
- 00:33:00through leaders or
- 00:33:01policies remembering and speaking the
- 00:33:04Unspeakable is a painful process for
- 00:33:06victims perpetrators bystanders and
- 00:33:09Witnesses such a process is successful
- 00:33:11or reasonably complete once pain outrage
- 00:33:14betrayal suffering and all other
- 00:33:16feelings have been voiced and heard and
- 00:33:18responsibility has been taken truth
- 00:33:21telling is both the most desirable and
- 00:33:23feasible way to Grapple with a difficult
- 00:33:25past the world hang
- 00:33:28is on a thin
- 00:33:31thread and that isy of
- 00:33:36man assume that uh certain fellows in
- 00:33:42Moscow lose their nerve or their
- 00:33:48commense for a bit and the whole world
- 00:33:53is in Fire and Flames
- 00:33:58it is nowadays we are not threatened by
- 00:34:00Elementary
- 00:34:01catastrophes there's no such thing as an
- 00:34:04ageb that is all man's doing we are the
- 00:34:09great danger psyche is the great danger
- 00:34:12what if something goes wrong with the
- 00:34:15psyche see and so see it is demonstrated
- 00:34:21to us in Ouray what what the power
- 00:34:24psyche is of man how important it is to
- 00:34:27know something about it but we know
- 00:34:29nothing about it no nobody would would
- 00:34:32give credit to the idea that uh the
- 00:34:36psychical
- 00:34:38uh processes of the ordinary man have
- 00:34:42any importance whatever one example of a
- 00:34:45terrible Mass psychosis represented by
- 00:34:48the collective Shadow is systemic racism
- 00:34:50and police brutality where deep-seated
- 00:34:53prejudices and personal biases escalate
- 00:34:55into widespread discrimination and
- 00:34:57violence Ordinary People Under certain
- 00:35:00conditions participate in or tacitly
- 00:35:03support actions they wouldn't normally
- 00:35:06consider the personal Shadow is the
- 00:35:08bridge to the collective Shadow thus
- 00:35:11solving one's inner conflicts personal
- 00:35:13Shadow is crucial to avoid unconsciously
- 00:35:15falling into the collective Shadow often
- 00:35:17revealed through synchronicities by
- 00:35:20doing so one can influence others
- 00:35:22benefiting society as a whole
- 00:35:25suppose um
- 00:35:28um um a patient comes
- 00:35:32to to that to that level or uh that his
- 00:35:38conflict begins to become really very
- 00:35:41serious that
- 00:35:44this
- 00:35:46his mind might
- 00:35:49suffer then he can have a
- 00:35:53collective the question is how can we
- 00:35:56Face the collective shadow we must first
- 00:35:58confront our personal Shadow by engaging
- 00:36:00in thorough and challenging
- 00:36:02self-examination being truthful in our
- 00:36:04interactions monitoring our emotional
- 00:36:06responses and analyzing our dreams this
- 00:36:09process prevents us from becoming
- 00:36:11unwitting victims of our shadow and
- 00:36:12unconscious projections allowing us to
- 00:36:15uncover and harness the positive traits
- 00:36:17within us ultimately enriching our lives
- 00:36:19and those around us by acknowledging the
- 00:36:22collective Shadow we can avoid its
- 00:36:24influence and take responsibility for
- 00:36:27addressing ignored issues and the
