- 00:00:55Today on Grandm, we're all about well
- 00:00:58resisting the federal government, being
- 00:00:59able to fight enemies, both foreign and
- 00:01:01domestic. But you know what? Another
- 00:01:03important thing is defending your life
- 00:01:05with your concealed carry weapon. Now,
- 00:01:07obviously, the thing that's going to
- 00:01:09matter most when it comes to your
- 00:01:10concealed carry is going to be shot
- 00:01:12placement. If you don't hit them
- 00:01:13somewhere that's going to kill them,
- 00:01:14well, they ain't going to die. But if
- 00:01:16you're close, that's when it can matter
- 00:01:18with some very good defensive rounds.
- 00:01:20So, what we have today is a lineup of
- 00:01:22some of the most popular defensive
- 00:01:24rounds such as what, John? So, I mean,
- 00:01:26we got Hornady Critical Duty. We got
- 00:01:27very basic. Yeah, Horny Critical Duty,
- 00:01:30some very basic hollow points, and even
- 00:01:31some more out there designs. I can't
- 00:01:33wait. The point is, we're going to be
- 00:01:35testing using ballistics gelatin, using
- 00:01:38ballistics dummies, and chronographing
- 00:01:40with some of the most common pistols how
- 00:01:42these rounds are going to actually
- 00:01:44perform. Teddan Grandanthm. What is the
- 00:01:47best defensive ammo? Now, we of course
- 00:01:49have to thank the sponsor. Sorry guys, I
- 00:01:50was a little distracted. I was looking
- 00:01:51through my Primary Arms 81, our favorite
- 00:01:54pistol optic. We have to give a big
- 00:01:55thank you to Primary Arms for sponsoring
- 00:01:57this video. A big thank you to them. Go
- 00:01:58check them out and of course email them
- 00:02:00and say, "Hey, I love April, which is
- 00:02:02banana April banana flavored candy. Send
- 00:02:05the buzz." Yeah. As much as you could
- 00:02:07possibly want, maybe. We don't know. And
- 00:02:09of course, if you're looking to be more
- 00:02:10American, well, we cannot recommend
- 00:02:11Henry Repeating Arms enough. If you
- 00:02:14whatever you want, they got you. They
- 00:02:15got a huge catalog. Go check them out
- 00:02:18and you're going to be more American
- 00:02:19than ever because lever actions are just
- 00:02:22very American. And if you go to
- 00:02:23henrythun.com very special opportunity
- 00:02:26there, but we can't talk about it. Now,
- 00:02:27of course, you want to get better at
- 00:02:28shooting, we recommend what, John?
- 00:02:30Dryfire with Manis. There you have it.
- 00:02:32Manchester is going to turn your weapon
- 00:02:33into dryfire machine. Go and check them
- 00:02:34out. And finally, all ammunition is
- 00:02:36sponsored by AAC. Of course, we're using
- 00:02:38a lot of different varieties, but we
- 00:02:39ought to give them a big thank you. With
- 00:02:41all that being said, talk is cheap.
- 00:02:43Ballistic dummies are actually like
- 00:02:452,000 per dummy. So, it's actually quite
- 00:02:47expensive. We're kind of We're kind of
- 00:02:48in the red here. I mean, I was going to
- 00:02:49round up homeless people. That's the
- 00:02:51next option. I guess we should talk to
- 00:02:53JD JD about that. Now, not only are we
- 00:02:57testing these rounds to the utmost, but
- 00:02:59we have a $400,000 Phantom camera, which
- 00:03:03it's probably why we're in the red also,
- 00:03:05but it gives us the coolest footage, and
- 00:03:06we can very much so visualize to the
- 00:03:09entirety of the wound track what that
- 00:03:11round is going to do in ballistics
- 00:03:13gelatin, which is not a good
- 00:03:15approximation of human tissue, but
- 00:03:17rather is showing you the performance of
- 00:03:20each rounds in a controllable medium.
- 00:03:23Now, before we do that, we're going to
- 00:03:24be chronoing every single one of those
- 00:03:26rounds because quite frankly, companies
- 00:03:28do weird stuff when it comes to
- 00:03:29chronoing. Now, we talked about the
- 00:03:30setup. Let's go ahead. Let's take a look
- 00:03:32at some of the rounds that we're going
- 00:03:33to be using today. John, I know we have
- 00:03:36a lot of different rounds here. Um, I
- 00:03:37guess there's a lot to talk about, so
- 00:03:39you want to go down the line, show
- 00:03:40everybody what we're going to be using?
- 00:03:41Yeah. So, as a good baseline, we have
- 00:03:43AAC 124 grain. It's almost identical to
- 00:03:46NATO spec. It's it's on the hotter side,
- 00:03:48but just very basic FMJ ball. This was
- 00:03:50like the BA M9. I shot like uh an
- 00:03:52insurgent like eight times and and he
- 00:03:54doesn't die. Yeah, he's just mad that
- 00:03:56you shot him. I'm talking about
- 00:03:57insurgency the game. So, next up it's
- 00:04:00Blazer 115 Jack and hollow point. It
- 00:04:02that's like it's not plus P. It's just
- 00:04:04the most basic hollow point that
- 00:04:06everyone has a couple boxes of laying
- 00:04:07around. The Walmart special. You can buy
- 00:04:09this almost everywhere and we're going
- 00:04:10to see how it performs to some of the
- 00:04:13like I guess you'd say proven
- 00:04:14performers. Mhm. Yeah. So, next up is
- 00:04:16another 115 grain hollow point and it's
- 00:04:18Pornady Critical Defense. It's also not
- 00:04:20plus P, but because it's meant for micro
- 00:04:229 mm, it doesn't really need to be plus
- 00:04:23P. It is interesting. It is a filled
- 00:04:25cavity in comparison to the hollow
- 00:04:27points. Each of those rounds is going to
- 00:04:28be traveling through a t-shirt, which
- 00:04:30previously in our videos have shown to
- 00:04:31be a problem with the traditional hollow
- 00:04:33point. So, I'm interested to see how
- 00:04:34these all perform. So, after that, we
- 00:04:36have two very proven performers,
- 00:04:38particularly with officer involved
- 00:04:39shootings. 124 grain spear gold dot,
- 00:04:42very good. That was like the round back
- 00:04:44in the day, the longest. Um, and then
- 00:04:45what predated it was Hydshock, but now
- 00:04:47we have 124 grain plus PHST by Federal.
- 00:04:50You remember Black Talons before they um
- 00:04:51people would say they would go through a
- 00:04:52bulletproof slip through your armor.
- 00:04:54Yeah, that Yeah, it's not true. Yeah.
- 00:04:56Again, another proven performer, but
- 00:04:58technology has advanced in the past
- 00:05:00forever. From there, my favorite round
- 00:05:02personally is Hornady Critical Duty 124
- 00:05:04plus P. I know that that's that's a new
- 00:05:06standard among a lot of law enforcement
- 00:05:07agencies right now. Yep. And then from
- 00:05:09there, then we got your your less
- 00:05:10traditional rounds. Some of them are
- 00:05:12actually pretty solid. Some are more of
- 00:05:13a meme, I guess you could say. First one
- 00:05:15is a Lehi Defense XTP or extreme
- 00:05:17penetrator. It looks like a Phillips
- 00:05:18head screwdriver. These are known to
- 00:05:19just zip like clean through gel blocks.
- 00:05:22I mean, I'm sure we'll see the same
- 00:05:23thing today. From there, actually very
- 00:05:25impressive round even though traditional
- 00:05:26wisdom doesn't really apply to it. The
- 00:05:27G9 first responder external hollow
- 00:05:30point. It's like the Lehi but with
- 00:05:32different geometry. So, it just I mean
- 00:05:34fluid dynamics stuff that I didn't pay
- 00:05:36attention to in school. That's that's
- 00:05:38fine, John. I went to school and I'm
- 00:05:40equally [ __ ] So last this was this
- 00:05:43is a big craze and I think like the
- 00:05:44early 201s maybe the G2 it never went
- 00:05:47away dude the RIP ammo it's really good
- 00:05:49in Tarov I use it a lot in there in
- 00:05:51Tarov you put this in Chris Vector you
- 00:05:53just you never lose but it's G2 RIP or
- 00:05:55radically invasive projectile and all
- 00:05:58these little prongs that they call
- 00:05:59troars meant to break apart in the body
- 00:06:01immediately and cause their own wound
- 00:06:03tracks and stuff. It looks pretty in gel
- 00:06:05but it's very very questionable at best
- 00:06:07in a real situation. Also, just side
- 00:06:09note, I I would not use that for an
- 00:06:11actual self-defense situation. You don't
- 00:06:12know. Maybe it's going to crush in that
- 00:06:14jail, dude. Just think about how it's
- 00:06:16going to look in court is all I'm
- 00:06:17saying. You know what I mean? So, I I I
- 00:06:19guess that's a But it looks mean and
- 00:06:21that's how people think. Is it worse
- 00:06:22than shooting somebody with horny
- 00:06:23rounds? No. You're trying to make love,
- 00:06:25not war. So, now as far as who are we?
- 00:06:28My name is Michael Jones, former Air
- 00:06:30Force special warfare guy first as a
- 00:06:31sear guy, then as attack P. And we got
- 00:06:33John. John spent seven years in the
- 00:06:35army. What did you do in the army, John?
- 00:06:36I was in the army. John? John was in
- 00:06:39275. Holy crap. Every time. The point is
- 00:06:42between us, we have a good amount of
- 00:06:44military experience, a lot of shooting
- 00:06:46experience, and we're happy to educate
- 00:06:48you. As far as the test procedures,
- 00:06:50we're going to be using a Glock 19. The
- 00:06:52reason we're using a Glock 19 is it sits
- 00:06:54between a full-size handgun and some of
- 00:06:57your more compacts. In fact, most people
- 00:06:58do carry a Glock 19. It's called the
- 00:07:00Professionals gun for a reason. That's
- 00:07:02why we'll be using it. It has a 4.02 in
- 00:07:04barrel. Now, we also have, we want to
- 00:07:06give a little bit of love to the M&P.
- 00:07:08This is the compact version, and it's
- 00:07:09slightly longer, I believe, on barrel.
- 00:07:11Yeah. 4.25 versus 4.02. So, these are
- 00:07:14very similar in performance. We simply
- 00:07:16wanted to show that there are other
- 00:07:17options beyond the Glock 19. We're huge
- 00:07:19fans of the of the M&P. That being said,
- 00:07:22due to the just the massive amount of
- 00:07:25Glock 19s, this was going to be our test
- 00:07:27gun that we're going to be using. So,
- 00:07:29with all that being said, let's go
- 00:07:30ahead. Let's load this up with 124 grain
- 00:07:32FMJ. that first little round and see how
- 00:07:35it performs in gel or doesn't perform.
- 00:07:37It's going to be terrible. It's going to
- 00:07:38be terrible. So, one other thing about
- 00:07:40the 19 is it has the exact same barrel
- 00:07:41length as the newer Glock 45, which is a
- 00:07:43very, very impressive handgun. Also, a
- 00:07:45lot of law enforcement agencies are
- 00:07:47switching to the Glock 45. Shout out to
- 00:07:49Zach and Josh. And Glock 45, which is 9
- 00:07:51mm. Yeah, very good handgun, but
- 00:07:54identical barrel length. And I just
- 00:07:55wanted to bring that up because the
- 00:07:56ballistic performance you see from this
- 00:07:58is going to be identical to a Glock 45,
- 00:08:00which is their service pistol. So, can't
- 00:08:02wait to test it out. Okay, first thing
- 00:08:04we're going to do is we're going to
- 00:08:05chrono the FMJ right here. So, we have
- 00:08:07our standard round. We have our
- 00:08:08chronograph. Let's see what the speed of
- 00:08:11the round
- 00:08:12is. Okay,
- 00:08:141,170 ft per second, which is just above
- 00:08:17the speed of sound. This is pretty
- 00:08:19typical for our 124 grain rounds. Let's
- 00:08:22go and test some gel. 124 grain AEC.
- 00:08:25Basically, your NATO standard round. And
- 00:08:28three, two, one,
- 00:08:34[Music]
- 00:08:49action. Just about what you'd expect.
- 00:08:51Just not a whole lot going on there. a
- 00:08:54little bit of tumbling, but overall uh
- 00:08:56we didn't see really good ballistics
- 00:08:58expansion. With everything being said, I
- 00:09:01do have to point out that although 124
- 00:09:03grain FMJ is not the round you typically
- 00:09:06want to select, it still did perform
- 00:09:08pretty well. We saw the combustion as
- 00:09:10the gel closed around it did tumble and
- 00:09:13create good expansion. It's just that is
- 00:09:15a temporary cavity and those are good,
- 00:09:17but your permanent wound cavity just is
- 00:09:19not as much as we typically see from a
- 00:09:22more specifically designed self-defense
- 00:09:25round. And I know everyone is quick to
- 00:09:27point out the 124 grain 9 mm is the
- 00:09:29military's round. However, many units
- 00:09:32that actually use their pistols to
- 00:09:34actually shoot people tend to use better
- 00:09:37ammo such as spear or many other hollow
- 00:09:40points. This is pretty typical. So, okay
- 00:09:42performance, but not my first choice at
- 00:09:44all, although very plentiful. Next up,
- 00:09:46we have Blazer 115 grain hollow points.
- 00:09:49This is your Walmart special. Let's go
- 00:09:51and see what our speed
- 00:09:54is. Okay, we have
- 00:09:571,184.8. Um, there's going to be
- 00:09:59obviously some variation between all the
- 00:10:01different rounds, but that is good
- 00:10:03performance. Let's go ahead and let's
- 00:10:04see how it performs on gels. 115 grain
- 00:10:09blazer hollow point Walmart special. And
- 00:10:12three, two, one,
- 00:10:27action. There we go. Good job, Ranger.
- 00:10:30So, you know, we were quick to point out
- 00:10:32that the the permanent cavity is not
- 00:10:34really that much. The temporary cavity
- 00:10:36definitely looked impressive and we saw
- 00:10:37good penetration in the gel block right
- 00:10:39here. Overall, this doesn't look that
- 00:10:42great. It looks like it did open despite
- 00:10:44the t-shirt. I'm not really seeing many
- 00:10:46problems when it comes to a thin
- 00:10:47t-shirt. I'm sure as we like a hoodie
- 00:10:50and a t-shirt for sure, but I mean,
- 00:10:51we're getting into summer here, which is
- 00:10:52what we're testing. We'll see how it
- 00:10:54stacks up to the other rounds, but it's
- 00:10:56our first hollow point right there. What
- 00:10:57do you What do you think, John? Not bad.
- 00:10:59I would say for the the Hornady Critical
- 00:11:00Defense, it's probably going to look
- 00:11:02almost identical, but it will perform
- 00:11:04better with uh someone wearing like
- 00:11:05thick clothing just because it has that
- 00:11:06pre-filled core. This wasn't bad. Wasn't
- 00:11:08great. What do they say in Chernobyl?
- 00:11:10Not terrible, not great. Oh, and I
- 00:11:12wasn't there, so No, no, no. It It was
- 00:11:14in the TV show. You mean you weren't
- 00:11:16there? Yeah, neither was I. I got John
- 00:11:20has some really good information on the
- 00:11:22upcoming, which is the Hornady Critical
- 00:11:25Defense. So, right here, they're both
- 00:11:27115 grains. And John, you want to talk
- 00:11:29about the Ojive on them? So, we already
- 00:11:31mentioned it has the pre-filled core
- 00:11:33right here, which helps with going
- 00:11:34through thick clothing, stuff like that.
- 00:11:36But also, if you notice the Ojive, which
- 00:11:38is like the I guess you could say the
- 00:11:40shape of the of the projectile itself.
- 00:11:42This is a smaller one than like
- 00:11:43traditional 115 grain hollow point. The
- 00:11:45reason for that is this is meant for
- 00:11:46like your micro 9mm handguns that have
- 00:11:49not that much internal volume inside the
- 00:11:52handgun. Now, this this is probably
- 00:11:54going to work fine, but it's just a
- 00:11:56little bit extra insurance with these
- 00:11:57things. Another one is uh along with the
- 00:11:59critical duty round is it has like a
- 00:12:01shelf on the projectile. So, whenever
- 00:12:03you're rechambering this round over and
- 00:12:05over, you know, you're going out, come
- 00:12:06back home, unload your gun, you know,
- 00:12:07yada yada yada. This prevents the round
- 00:12:09from seating back into the casing. So, I
- 00:12:12mean, overall, Hornady ammo is a very
- 00:12:14well thoughtout round. Obviously, we
- 00:12:15like it. We're not sponsored. It's just
- 00:12:17a good round. So, let's go. Let's test
- 00:12:19it out. See how fast it's going. All
- 00:12:20right, we got Portidity critical defense
- 00:12:23115 grain
- 00:12:261,121 smoking. It's moving. Okay, let's
- 00:12:29go ahead. Let's do our last test here.
- 00:12:31Hornady critical defense 115 grain.
- 00:12:34Probably not going to perform much
- 00:12:35different, but it has a good track
- 00:12:37record. And three, two, one, action.
- 00:12:49It's a little bit less penetration, but
- 00:12:51honestly, like you said, John, it it
- 00:12:53does look extremely similar in
- 00:12:55performance to the uh Blazer hollow
- 00:12:58point right there. I would say it's more
- 00:12:59consistent across the board, whether
- 00:13:01they're wearing thick clothing or if
- 00:13:03you're using it in a micro 9. Hey, John.
- 00:13:05Yeah. Compelling. Compelling. Okay, so
- 00:13:07we're going to take a look here at this
- 00:13:08gel block little postmortem right here.
- 00:13:09It performed very well. You could see
- 00:13:11that we did have some of the pedals
- 00:13:12shear off of the slug itself, which is
- 00:13:15awesome. But the majority of the weight
- 00:13:16was retained in the slug, which is
- 00:13:18mostly what we want to see here. It's
- 00:13:19fairly similar performance. With that
- 00:13:21being said, this round does perform more
- 00:13:24consistently, I would say, in terms of
- 00:13:25clothing. So, what we saw from it,
- 00:13:28pretty good. You can see that both it
- 00:13:29and the Blazer did open up very
- 00:13:31similarly with the fact with the only
- 00:13:33difference being that with the Hornady,
- 00:13:35the pedals are much deeper and longer.
- 00:13:38And also when they do come off, that's
- 00:13:40just pretty brutal. But very similar
- 00:13:42performance. So that's interesting to
- 00:13:43see. Let's go ahead. Let's step it up to
- 00:13:45the next round. Next up, we have Spear
- 00:13:46Gold Dot. This is the 124 grain plus P.
- 00:13:50This is a proven performer. In fact, you
- 00:13:52use a very similar round on a
- 00:13:53deployment, didn't you, John? H or
- 00:13:55Hydrashock. Old school Hydroshock. Nice.
- 00:13:57So, what we're seeing here is good
- 00:13:58proven performance. And we'll see how it
- 00:14:00actually looks in gel compared to what
- 00:14:02we shot and what we will be shooting.
- 00:14:091,173. Now, the thing you also have to
- 00:14:11consider is that we have some 115 grain
- 00:14:14rounds that were going to similar speed.
- 00:14:16This is 124, not 115. That is cooking
- 00:14:20for 124. So, let's go and shoot it in
- 00:14:23gel. See how it how it does. I will say
- 00:14:25I carried spear gold dot for a long time
- 00:14:27and I still occasionally do along with
- 00:14:29federal HSD. So, this is a very I guess
- 00:14:31you could say common route. Like within
- 00:14:33law enforcement, this is used for a very
- 00:14:35very long time. It's It's a fantastic
- 00:14:37round, but this day and age, there are
- 00:14:39slightly better options out there. There
- 00:14:40you have it. Everything's incremental,
- 00:14:42and that's why we're doing this video.
- 00:14:44Exactly. Right here, we have 124 grain
- 00:14:46spear gold dot plus B. John, would you
- 00:14:48say this round is racist? We can 3 2 1
- 00:14:57action. That is some wonderful
- 00:15:00performance. Look at that. That is
- 00:15:01nasty. Little bits of t-shirt in there,
- 00:15:03too. Look at that hole. The t-shirt.
- 00:15:06Here was the critical
- 00:15:08defense. That's pretty wild. Yeah. Look
- 00:15:10at that wound track. Woo. I caught you
- 00:15:12had to dig [ __ ] out of It's right there.
- 00:15:14Look. Yeah. I don't want to cut my
- 00:15:15finger. You know, this feels like the
- 00:15:16scene from Blackhawk Down when the dude
- 00:15:18gets, you know. Oh, that is nasty, dude.
- 00:15:21Now, you might wonder why it's called
- 00:15:22the gold dot. And the answer is right
- 00:15:25there. Okay. So, that opened up
- 00:15:27beautifully right there. Let's go. Let's
- 00:15:29take a look at the permanent wound
- 00:15:30cavity and then kind of talk a little
- 00:15:32bit about it. So, first off, our
- 00:15:33temporary was massive on this guy. Um, I
- 00:15:36would say this is our first really good
- 00:15:37performer that we saw in the rounds that
- 00:15:38we've shot. There is a difference
- 00:15:40between your your Blazer 115 grain and
- 00:15:43your more proven spear. But, let's go
- 00:15:45ahead and let's take a look if you want
- 00:15:46to get in close on this guy. As you can
- 00:15:47see with our permanent wound cavity, we
- 00:15:48have a really good permanent wound
- 00:15:50cavity. We have bits of the t-shirt
- 00:15:52that's that black material in there. And
- 00:15:54we have all of the retained weight in
- 00:15:56the slug right here, which is excellent.
- 00:15:58And it opened up quite wide. The pedals
- 00:16:01stayed intact. And this is a wonderful
- 00:16:04performer. I don't believe you're ever
- 00:16:05going to feel outgunned carrying Sphere
- 00:16:07Gold Dot. So, let's go ahead and go to
- 00:16:09its main competitor, which would be the
- 00:16:10Federal HST, which is also a very
- 00:16:14effective round that has um killed a lot
- 00:16:17of people. Next up, we have the Federal
- 00:16:20HST 124 PlusPB. Now, we fired a few plus
- 00:16:24P rounds at this point, and we should
- 00:16:26point out that you might not always see
- 00:16:29the benefit from plus P depending on how
- 00:16:31small your firearm is. So, you are going
- 00:16:33to see the benefit in like a 19, but
- 00:16:34you're getting down to your very small
- 00:16:36weapons. You're going to get a lot more
- 00:16:37flash, maybe not as much performance.
- 00:16:39So, it's always good with any round that
- 00:16:41you're going to select to use to always
- 00:16:43chronograph it, make sure that you're
- 00:16:44getting the speeds that you want to out
- 00:16:46of it, and compare it pretty logically
- 00:16:48to other rounds that might be more
- 00:16:50suited to a subcompact gun. which is to
- 00:16:52say I'm probably not going to run plus
- 00:16:54P's in a small micro. Yeah, super micro
- 00:16:56handgun. I'm just going to stick with
- 00:16:57critical defense, something like that.
- 00:16:58But that being said, let's go ahead and
- 00:17:00let's see how fast it's
- 00:17:04going.
- 00:17:061,182, which is very comparable to what
- 00:17:09we saw from the Sphere Gold Dot. Let's
- 00:17:11go ahead shoot it through gel. The
- 00:17:13direct competitor to the Sphere Gold
- 00:17:15Dot, the Federal HST 124 grain plus P
- 00:17:19fired through a Glock 19. And this is
- 00:17:21actually the best Glock 19, John, which
- 00:17:22is which generation? You say three, but
- 00:17:25I'd say four or five. Ready. And three,
- 00:17:28two, one,
- 00:17:32[Music]
- 00:17:40action. We had a pass through. Oh, went
- 00:17:43straight through. That is a great little
- 00:17:44wound track right there. Once again,
- 00:17:46Federal HST proven itself to be
- 00:17:48extremely effective. This is a very What
- 00:17:50would you call it, John? What type of
- 00:17:52round is this? Oh, is that a fulls size
- 00:17:54handgun performer? You wouldn't say it
- 00:17:56maybe has a proclivity for certain skin.
- 00:17:59So, if you come in and take a look at
- 00:18:01this guy, really beautiful flowering
- 00:18:03pedaling effect. That's not specifically
- 00:18:05what you need. However, it is indicative
- 00:18:07of very good, very consistent
- 00:18:09performance. In addition to that, it
- 00:18:11opened up massively. And this is just
- 00:18:14wonderful. It retained almost all of the
- 00:18:16slug itself. Now, we did fire two
- 00:18:18rounds. One barely exited and we
- 00:18:20couldn't find it and the other one we
- 00:18:21put gel block behind it. We were able to
- 00:18:23catch it. As a quick note for why we
- 00:18:25have two wound tracks in this particular
- 00:18:27gel. Um, and of course both me and John
- 00:18:29are huge fans of Federal HST and this
- 00:18:32will always be a recommended round
- 00:18:34within the Grand
- 00:18:36Theft Hornady Critical Duty. This is 124
- 00:18:40grain plus P. This is John's favorite
- 00:18:42round. John is cursed with autism. So
- 00:18:44John will now talk about this round. So,
- 00:18:47similar to the uh the critical defense,
- 00:18:48it has that flex lock uh pre-filled
- 00:18:50core, which helps it whenever going
- 00:18:52through barriers, such as very thick
- 00:18:53clothing, stuff like that. It also has a
- 00:18:55slight shelf towards the top of the
- 00:18:57round to keep it from seating back into
- 00:18:59the casing whenever you're rechambering
- 00:19:00over and over. Officer gets off duty,
- 00:19:02unloads his gun, you know, over and
- 00:19:03over. It helps prevent that. It's just
- 00:19:05it's just a solid all-around performer.
- 00:19:06I would say it's going to look rather
- 00:19:08similar in those gel blocks to the other
- 00:19:10stuff that we had in 124, but it is a
- 00:19:13better general purpose round because it
- 00:19:15does better in barriers. So,
- 00:19:16interestingly enough, I'm pretty sure
- 00:19:17Hornady designed that specifically to
- 00:19:20beat the FBI test and then it turned out
- 00:19:22to be a good round rather than trying to
- 00:19:24make a good round that and then put it
- 00:19:25against the test. Way to go, Hornady.
- 00:19:27Yeah. Yeah. All right, let's go. Let's
- 00:19:29test the speed on this guy. Plus P 124
- 00:19:34grain.
- 00:19:351,178. As you're seeing with all these
- 00:19:38124 grain plus P rounds, we're seeing
- 00:19:40about the same amount of performance.
- 00:19:42So, let's get some gel down, put a
- 00:19:43t-shirt in front of it, see how it does.
- 00:19:45Duty critical duty 124 plus P. We'll see
- 00:19:48how it does. Two, one,
- 00:19:55action. That looked energetic. Look at
- 00:19:58that. Right to the very edge of the gel
- 00:20:00block. How how advantageous for us. All
- 00:20:02right, we have Hordy Critical Defense
- 00:20:03right here. Now, as you can see, our
- 00:20:05general kind of size of the projectile,
- 00:20:08how big it opened up wasn't as large as
- 00:20:09a spear or the Federal HST. Now, for
- 00:20:12some that might be the end of the story
- 00:20:14because, as you can see, the wound track
- 00:20:15isn't quite as impressive. That being
- 00:20:17said, there's more to it. So, one thing
- 00:20:19that we want to look at also is going to
- 00:20:20be consistent performance. So, in terms
- 00:20:23of clothing and getting through
- 00:20:24clothing, what you see is that hollow
- 00:20:26points, traditional hollow points, tend
- 00:20:28to not open up as readily and get
- 00:20:30clogged more easily. This has been
- 00:20:31proven in both our videos and many other
- 00:20:34videos that are out there. We're not the
- 00:20:35end- all beall. So although not as you
- 00:20:38know intense and as violent as those two
- 00:20:41other rounds, it still has consistent
- 00:20:43and very good performance and
- 00:20:45penetration just like those rounds. For
- 00:20:47me, I tend to opt to carry different
- 00:20:49types of ammunition during different
- 00:20:50types of seasons. During winter and
- 00:20:52stuff, I'll carry something like the
- 00:20:53Critical Duty or the G9. Compared to
- 00:20:55summer with lighter clothing, I have no
- 00:20:57problem carrying Spear or HST. So
- 00:21:00there's always more to the story. Make
- 00:21:01sure that you're matching the ammunition
- 00:21:02to where you live in Florida. man, maybe
- 00:21:05it's not going to matter as much, but if
- 00:21:06you're living in Montana, man, you might
- 00:21:08want to think about carrying a round
- 00:21:09that has more consistent performance
- 00:21:11through thick clothing. Next up, we have
- 00:21:13the Lehi Extreme Penetrator. I wonder if
- 00:21:16they're Mormon. If you're Mormon, you'll
- 00:21:17understand that reference. So, it's 115
- 00:21:20grains. It's a low recoil load. So,
- 00:21:22there's a lot going on here. Let's see
- 00:21:23the penetration. Let's see how good it
- 00:21:25performs in gel. My guess is probably
- 00:21:28not that well. John, what do you think?
- 00:21:29I think it's going to zip through wager.
- 00:21:31All right, let's see what the speed is
- 00:21:32on this guy.
- 00:21:36Right.
- 00:21:371,093. So quite a bit slower being a low
- 00:21:40recoil around and also lighter. That
- 00:21:42definitely matches up. Let's go ahead
- 00:21:44lift. Get ready with our gel block.
- 00:21:46Dang, I didn't catch it. And let's see
- 00:21:48how that works. All right, we have the
- 00:21:49Lehi Phillips head screwdriver right
- 00:21:51here. Extreme penetrator. You know,
- 00:21:52people always like, how do you know
- 00:21:54which is which? Like flathead versus
- 00:21:55Phillips. It's like, well, flathead's
- 00:21:57flat. So, kind of takes a lot of the
- 00:21:59guesswork out of it, huh?
- 00:22:01[Applause]
- 00:22:06That was extremely low recoil. I will
- 00:22:08say that much. Look at that. That was a
- 00:22:10lot of penetration that went through the
- 00:22:12first gel block and into the second gel
- 00:22:14block before it stopped. And you know
- 00:22:15what? That definitely extremely
- 00:22:17penetrated just like you, John. All
- 00:22:19right. This is a slug that has been
- 00:22:20fired. You could probably actually just
- 00:22:21load this guy right up and fire it again
- 00:22:23cuz apparently it's fine. So you shoot
- 00:22:25the guy and then reload the round. But
- 00:22:28you know what? I really didn't think
- 00:22:28this round would do well at all. That
- 00:22:30being said, I'm pretty impressed with
- 00:22:31the performance. Both being a low recoil
- 00:22:34round. It was extremely pleasant to
- 00:22:36fire. And on top of that, with the wind
- 00:22:37track isn't like incredibly impressive,
- 00:22:40but pretty on par with many of the
- 00:22:41rounds that we've seen so far and
- 00:22:43extremely good penetration. It did not
- 00:22:46care at all what it was going through.
- 00:22:47So, this one surprised me. Not my first
- 00:22:50choice. However, not a bad performing
- 00:22:52round at all, especially given the
- 00:22:55amount of recoil that it generated for
- 00:22:56me. This is a round I could recommend to
- 00:22:59shooters who might struggle with recoil.
- 00:23:00So, not bad at all. Let's continue.
- 00:23:02Right here we have the G9 first
- 00:23:04responder. A very interesting round and
- 00:23:06in many ways kind of different from what
- 00:23:08we've shown so far. I do want to point
- 00:23:09out that we are big friends with G9.
- 00:23:11They are Idaho bros and well, they've
- 00:23:13supported the channel since like 2017 in
- 00:23:15terms of showing us product demos and
- 00:23:17giving us police reports and feedback on
- 00:23:19how the round has been performing. G9's
- 00:23:21a little weird in the fact that it
- 00:23:22doesn't really perform wonderfully in
- 00:23:24gel. It really does require living
- 00:23:26tissue. So, with that being said, John,
- 00:23:28do you want to go ahead and step in
- 00:23:29frame here? No, I meant I'm going to
- 00:23:31shoot you. Oh, yeah. But no, so I feel
- 00:23:33like I'm I'm coping right now. But all
- 00:23:35that being said, let's go and let's see
- 00:23:36its performance. Let's go ahead and
- 00:23:37let's start with speed. It is a 77 grain
- 00:23:39round. Fairly low
- 00:23:43recoil.
- 00:23:451,666. An unfortunate number, but you
- 00:23:48know, go to hell, Satan. Well, I guess
- 00:23:49you're already there, so fair enough.
- 00:23:50Oh, got it. So, let's go ahead. Let's
- 00:23:53see how it performs. So, we have a very
- 00:23:55light round traveling extremely fast.
- 00:23:57Now, a quick note on how this works. Uh,
- 00:23:59John did some quick math on his phone,
- 00:24:00and the round is traveling at about well
- 00:24:03over 1,000 mph. So, you are mostly
- 00:24:06water, especially your brain, but most
- 00:24:08of you is water. So, it uses those
- 00:24:10fluids in order to push everything
- 00:24:12apart. And it is quite violent in
- 00:24:14various animals that I've hunted with
- 00:24:16it. It does very well. Obviously, I like
- 00:24:18G9. I carry this a lot. G9 77 grain
- 00:24:20first responder. John, you ever been to
- 00:24:21those churches where like a giant
- 00:24:23paperier-mâché devil comes out of the
- 00:24:24ground, then the pastor sends him back
- 00:24:26to hell with his guitar? I've never been
- 00:24:28to one that cool. You're missing out.
- 00:24:29Okay. In three, two, one, action.
- 00:24:41Into the other. Oh my gosh. Wonderful.
- 00:24:44Wonderful. I do love G9. Not a bad wound
- 00:24:46track. Not bad at all. So, right here we
- 00:24:48have the G9. The round is also fine.
- 00:24:51Just go ahead and reload that little
- 00:24:52sucker. So, shoot somebody, pull it out
- 00:24:53of their dead body, and you're good to
- 00:24:55go. Just kidding. Don't do that. Pull it
- 00:24:56out of their what bike. Dead body
- 00:24:58because they're dead. I don't know. So,
- 00:25:00we have extremely good penetration. Did
- 00:25:02not care about clothing. G9's one of
- 00:25:04those rounds that does very well with
- 00:25:05clothing due to the fact that it has
- 00:25:06something that can get plugged. Similar
- 00:25:08to the Lehi round with the fact that it
- 00:25:10had really good penetration, similarly
- 00:25:12low recoil. The difference being that
- 00:25:13this is more kind of traditionally
- 00:25:14shaped like an FMJ. So, might feed
- 00:25:16better. I'm not going to I'm not going
- 00:25:18to stick to that. Just going to say that
- 00:25:19in terms of bullet shape, this could be
- 00:25:21problematic for certain handguns. Now, I
- 00:25:23will say I think it performed quite
- 00:25:24well. It's put it under Spear and HST
- 00:25:27and maybe about on par or a little bit
- 00:25:29better than Critical Duty. John likes
- 00:25:30Critical Duty more. He says not on to
- 00:25:32that, but my channel. So, we've done a
- 00:25:35lot of proven performers. Let's do a
- 00:25:37meme round, which is RIP. Right here we
- 00:25:39have G2 RIP. You ever seen Yellow Sun
- 00:25:41gone? Uh, no, not really. Send RIP. All
- 00:25:43right. Here you go. Talk about it. So
- 00:25:45yeah, it's it's kind of a meme round. On
- 00:25:47the box, it says the last round you'll
- 00:25:48ever need. This is this is big like 10
- 00:25:5015 years ago, something like that. It's
- 00:25:52got these little what's called troars,
- 00:25:54and it's just a machined piece of
- 00:25:56copper, and these are meant to break off
- 00:25:57as soon as they go in the body. It looks
- 00:25:58really pretty on ballistics gel, but I
- 00:26:00would say it's questionable at best.
- 00:26:02Who's been shot with these rounds? I
- 00:26:04mean, I'm sure certain individuals in
- 00:26:05the city have you think I was about to
- 00:26:07say the people who carry them like shoot
- 00:26:09themselves in the leg and perform. Have
- 00:26:11you ever seen a guy where he shoots
- 00:26:12himself in the leg and he's like had an
- 00:26:13ND shot myself in the leg round
- 00:26:16performed great? Yeah, I mean I'm I'm
- 00:26:18sure they they they're probably pretty
- 00:26:19nasty on the human body. But that being
- 00:26:21said, I would I just say think about how
- 00:26:24this would look in court. Penetration
- 00:26:25also matters. If this isn't getting good
- 00:26:27penetration, then I have some questions.
- 00:26:29All right, let's go. Let's see how this
- 00:26:30guy is
- 00:26:32speedwise. That was very light recoil.
- 00:26:351,236. Now, the rip is a 92 grain
- 00:26:38projectile traveling at 1,236. a little
- 00:26:41bit low. The recoil did feel that way.
- 00:26:42I'm really interested to see how it's
- 00:26:45going to perform in ballistic skeleton.
- 00:26:46So, we're going to get some new stuff up
- 00:26:47and see how it does. Tarov's favorite
- 00:26:499mm round. You know, this does look like
- 00:26:52an AI generated 9 mm bullet. You'd be
- 00:26:54like, "Chat GPT, make me a crazy 9 mil."
- 00:26:57The deadliest 9 mm bullet in the world.
- 00:27:00It would make this. Okay. In three, two,
- 00:27:03one, action.
- 00:27:09Oh, okay. So, I I need to point some
- 00:27:12something out like right now. So, this
- 00:27:14looks really cool. So, a ballistic jet
- 00:27:17block about 3.5 in to 3 in of gel is
- 00:27:21like equivalent to like less than an
- 00:27:23inch of human skin. So, we have about 6
- 00:27:26in of penetration. That's like 6 in
- 00:27:28right there, right John? Let's see.
- 00:27:29That's like 15 in. Yeah, it's like 15.
- 00:27:31So, the point is that these pedals are
- 00:27:33coming off almost immediately. And what
- 00:27:35really kills when it comes to a round is
- 00:27:37going to be penetration. You need to
- 00:27:38make sure that you're hitting the vital
- 00:27:40structures of the body. Usually the
- 00:27:41stuff that's very vital isn't very close
- 00:27:43to the surface unless you're shooting
- 00:27:44the head, which case it doesn't matter
- 00:27:46that much. Now, you do have part of the
- 00:27:47projectile that goes deep, but this just
- 00:27:49seems very gimmicky to me. But it looks
- 00:27:51cool as hell. That's all that matters.
- 00:27:52Okay, so we have some of the pedals as
- 00:27:54well as the main projectile right here.
- 00:27:56So again, I'm going to be the last
- 00:27:57person to say this is not an effective
- 00:28:00round. That's obviously not true. You
- 00:28:02hit somebody in a vital area, you're
- 00:28:03going to kill them. But today's video is
- 00:28:05mostly about optimization. What is the
- 00:28:07most optimal round for self-defense? And
- 00:28:09because of the fact that the pedals
- 00:28:11split apart so quickly, and again, like
- 00:28:13we talked about before, that's going to
- 00:28:14be fairly quick in the human tissue.
- 00:28:17It's probably not your best option. I
- 00:28:19would go with a proven round such as
- 00:28:21Federal Spear, Critical Duty, G9, I
- 00:28:24think is going to give you better
- 00:28:26results. I think the most interesting
- 00:28:27thing that we've done so far today is
- 00:28:29the fact that many of the rounds
- 00:28:30performed very similarly. There wasn't a
- 00:28:32a massive amount of variation between
- 00:28:35the rounds. They all performed well to
- 00:28:37an extent and obviously Spearer and
- 00:28:39Federal performed extremely well, but
- 00:28:41there there's not as much of a
- 00:28:43separation between the ballistic
- 00:28:45performance of these rounds from what
- 00:28:47you used to see to now. Ballistic
- 00:28:48performance has gotten very good even in
- 00:28:50cheap rounds like Blazer. Now, with all
- 00:28:52those things being said, what we're
- 00:28:54going to do now is we're going to bring
- 00:28:54out a ballistic demo. We're going to
- 00:28:55shoot it with some of the best
- 00:28:56performers just so you can see what it
- 00:28:58what it would look like going through
- 00:29:00bone and tissue and that type of stuff
- 00:29:02because well it looks cool and we can't
- 00:29:04shoot homeless people. So this is about
- 00:29:06as close as we can get until rules
- 00:29:08change, right? Yeah. Yep. You know,
- 00:29:10everyone's like, "Hey, I want to die by
- 00:29:11firing squad. Why not die by firing
- 00:29:13squad on Grandanthm?" Just a thought. So
- 00:29:16next guy on death row, if you're
- 00:29:17watching this, just see what happens.
- 00:29:19You never know. We'll bring the phantom
- 00:29:20camera. We'll bring the phantom just,
- 00:29:22you know, JD Vance. He's already killed
- 00:29:24the pope. What does the matter? First
- 00:29:26up, we have G9 firing into the ballistic
- 00:29:28dummy right here. If you're not familiar
- 00:29:29with the ballistic dummy, this is an
- 00:29:31approximation of a human. Way too
- 00:29:33expensive. We have phone, we have blood,
- 00:29:35we have tissues, we have everything. And
- 00:29:38uh it's going to be good time.
- 00:29:42Sorry, I'm speaking to somebody about
- 00:29:44it. And three, two, one, action.
- 00:29:53Look at that G9. Look at that flowering
- 00:29:56as it enters. It immediately cracked the
- 00:29:59rib right there as you can see. You want
- 00:30:00to get a good closeup of that. And then
- 00:30:02it looks like Oh, that is cool. So, we
- 00:30:05have a support that's in here coming
- 00:30:07through the the piping right there
- 00:30:08that's filled. So, actually cracked
- 00:30:10that. It would have obviously exited out
- 00:30:12through the spine that it hit that
- 00:30:13little support right there, but it still
- 00:30:15crushed through it and completely
- 00:30:16cracked it. Wonderful performance from
- 00:30:18the G9. That's what we want to see. Next
- 00:30:20up, we have See here, John's favorite.
- 00:30:24Best there is a 124 grain plus P. Very
- 00:30:28common law enforcement round. Let's see
- 00:30:29how she performs. In three, two, one,
- 00:30:33action.
- 00:30:39Yucky. Yucky. I don't know about you,
- 00:30:41John, but I would just be okay. Yeah.
- 00:30:43Walk it off. Yeah. Built different.
- 00:30:45Yeah, just built different. Okay, so we
- 00:30:47have excellent performance. Now, the
- 00:30:49flower in the pedaling was not as much
- 00:30:50as we saw from the G9, but like we
- 00:30:52talked about it before, consistent
- 00:30:53performance through clothing. G9 does
- 00:30:55it, too. Different strokes for different
- 00:30:56folks. Cracked through the rib, went
- 00:30:59straight through, and because there
- 00:31:01wasn't the support arm there, we did
- 00:31:02have it exit. Now, it still crushed
- 00:31:05through all the bone. So, we have really
- 00:31:06good performance because obviously if
- 00:31:08you're shooting something that's living,
- 00:31:09well, you're probably going to hit the
- 00:31:10bone structure if you're shooting for
- 00:31:12for uh center mass. So, you do want the
- 00:31:15performance of those rounds to be able
- 00:31:16to push through that. So, excellent
- 00:31:18performance from Critical Duty. Let's go
- 00:31:20ahead and let's try out Federal HST. Can
- 00:31:23we shoot on the right side of the body?
- 00:31:25So, when you're ready? Yes, sir. And
- 00:31:26three, two, one, action.
- 00:31:36Oh my gosh, look at this. Okay, so first
- 00:31:38off, wonderful flowering and pedaling.
- 00:31:40Larger than the G9. the other. Of
- 00:31:42course, it's a traditional hollow point.
- 00:31:43If you want to come in there and take a
- 00:31:44close look. Okay. And even better,
- 00:31:46traveled through the lungs here.
- 00:31:48Traveled through the heart, deflected
- 00:31:49down as it came through down through the
- 00:31:51lungs. And we can see the slug right
- 00:31:53there. Fully intact after just crushing
- 00:31:55through everything. Wonderful
- 00:31:56performance. Just what we want to see.
- 00:31:58Next one we'll be trying is going to be
- 00:32:00G2 Rip, which I just don't know how it's
- 00:32:02going to perform really. I'll be pay
- 00:32:04respect on my
- 00:32:05ranch.
- 00:32:07G2 Rip. And uh we'll see how it does. In
- 00:32:11three, two, one,
- 00:32:19[Music]
- 00:32:21action. All right, here's our G2. Looks
- 00:32:23like the pedals. Can't quite see them.
- 00:32:26Okay, so we did have it exit out through
- 00:32:28the lung right there. The little small
- 00:32:29piece. Oh, and there's one of the
- 00:32:31shards. It's kind of deep in there. So,
- 00:32:33it performed like it did in gel, which
- 00:32:34makes sense cuz we're shooting in gel
- 00:32:36again. Hey, man. You shoot them in CNS
- 00:32:38or the head, they're going to die. but
- 00:32:40select a better round. Well, that brings
- 00:32:42us to the end of our test so far. We've
- 00:32:44tested a lot of different ammunition
- 00:32:45types and there's a lot of takeaways
- 00:32:46from this. I would say the biggest
- 00:32:48takeaway is that really what it comes
- 00:32:49down to is training. If you can't make
- 00:32:51the hits, if you can't hit the vital
- 00:32:52parts of the human body, well, your
- 00:32:54rounds aren't going to really matter at
- 00:32:55all. But if we are a good shooter, if
- 00:32:57we're putting the rounds where they need
- 00:32:58to go, this is where really kind of
- 00:33:01gaming the system and choosing the best
- 00:33:03rounds possible is really going to come
- 00:33:05into play. All of us should be trained
- 00:33:07shooters. We should all should be dry
- 00:33:08firing. you should be familiar with our
- 00:33:09weapons. So, choosing the best rounds
- 00:33:11possible is definitely in your best
- 00:33:13interest. I would say of the rounds that
- 00:33:15we tested, depending on, you know, the
- 00:33:18environment that you are, whether people
- 00:33:19are wearing thick clothing or not thick
- 00:33:21clothing, I would say both Spear Federal
- 00:33:23and of course G9 and Hornady Critical
- 00:33:26Duty all perform extremely well or all
- 00:33:29proven performers. But I was also very
- 00:33:31surprised by Lehi with their with their
- 00:33:33XP round. It performed pretty well
- 00:33:35actually. A GTU is a bit of a meme as
- 00:33:38far as their rip round. That being said,
- 00:33:40if you hit somebody where they need to
- 00:33:42be hit, so long as it can penetrate
- 00:33:43adequately, you're still going to kill
- 00:33:44somebody. My point is is train, select
- 00:33:47good ammo, and I think you're going to
- 00:33:48be fine. John, yeah, the the only thing
- 00:33:50I'd say is um if you're on like a tight
- 00:33:51budget and all you got is the good, you
- 00:33:53know, Walmart special Blazer 9 mil, it's
- 00:33:55it's not as pretty, not as violent, but
- 00:33:57if if you can get the rounds where they
- 00:33:59need to go, like you're going to be
- 00:34:00fine. So training is what matters at the
- 00:34:02end of the day. Absolutely, guys. We
- 00:34:03hope you guys enjoyed this video quite a
- 00:34:05bit. We know we did. I'm always kind of
- 00:34:07surprised at the results that we get. I
- 00:34:09kind of knew that Spear and Federal are
- 00:34:11going to perform so well, but I'm always
- 00:34:12impressed by Hornady Critical Duty as
- 00:34:14well as apparently Lehi. I'm I'm I might
- 00:34:17actually start recommending that round
- 00:34:18to certain people who have problems on
- 00:34:20recoil control because it is a very soft
- 00:34:23shooting round. So guys, if you have any
- 00:34:25recommendations on us testing different
- 00:34:26types of ammo, we are all ears. We can
- 00:34:29do a whole video on mean ammo types. We
- 00:34:32are more than happy to do so. Go and get
- 00:34:34in the comments. Tell us what you like
- 00:34:35best. And of course, as always, stay
- 00:34:37cool. Stay train. Final dad advice for
- 00:34:39you guys is going to be, you know what,
- 00:34:41drink some water. I know you're
- 00:34:42dehydrated right now. You might tell
- 00:34:44your girl to drink water, but you know
- 00:34:45what? I bet you're not peeing. You know,
- 00:34:48what is it? That light lemonade color.
- 00:34:49Remember they have they have the house
- 00:34:51is a It's like in basic Did they have
- 00:34:53like thearts? Yeah, they have the charts
- 00:34:55on what your color should be. It's like
- 00:34:56a light lemonade and no one ever adhered
- 00:34:58to it. Well, you just you just I don't
- 00:35:00know. I like kidney stones.
- 00:35:07So, this game this next one. Um, so Oh
- 00:35:11my god. Hold on.
- 00:35:14I That's a B- roll right there. All
- 00:35:16right. Still rolling. Still rolling. All
- 00:35:18right. Cool.
