00:00:00
yesterday was World Water Day and while
00:00:01
we've made some progress over the last
00:00:03
10 20 years we still have a long way to
00:00:06
go six hundred and fifty million people
00:00:08
globally no access to safe drinking
00:00:10
water so it's an issue that we need to
00:00:13
keep advocating for we need to keep
00:00:15
raising awareness for to ensure clean
00:00:19
water for all
00:00:22
hello and welcome to this very special
00:00:25
episode earlier this year I was so
00:00:28
thrilled to announce that Deanie had
00:00:29
been selected by face Africa as the
00:00:31
official media partner for their 10th
00:00:34
wash gala which was held in New York now
00:00:37
if you don't know who face Africa is I
00:00:39
highly encourage you to check them out
00:00:41
it's an organization that was started in
00:00:44
2008 by the incredible Saran kabah Jones
00:00:48
Saran and her family were forced to flee
00:00:50
their home country of Liberia in the
00:00:53
early 80s due to the civil war that
00:00:55
devastated the country in 2008 she went
00:00:59
back to Liberia for the first time and
00:01:01
Saran was inspired to start a fund a
00:01:04
child's education which we now know as
00:01:07
face Africa over the years as the
00:01:10
organization grew Saran realized that
00:01:13
while education was a huge priority what
00:01:16
was even more urgent was the need for
00:01:18
children and their communities to have
00:01:21
access to clean water and so 10 years
00:01:24
ago the first fundraising gala was held
00:01:26
to raise money for water sanitation and
00:01:29
hygiene programs which is why it's
00:01:32
called the wash gala this year's gala
00:01:35
was a milestone gala this being its
00:01:38
tenth year it was an absolutely
00:01:41
phenomenal evening that raised a
00:01:43
significant amount of money for wash
00:01:45
programs across Africa it was also an
00:01:49
opportunity to recognize just some of
00:01:51
the people who are doing their part to
00:01:53
help raise the quality and standard of
00:01:55
life across Africa
00:01:58
[Music]
00:02:24
how you feeling good grace yes yes done
00:02:27
thank you always do who are you wearing
00:02:30
I feel like I may often tell you wearing
00:02:32
a Nigerian designer and I'm gonna
00:02:33
butcher the name but it's oh do ya think
00:02:37
ya stunning I feel like I'm floating on
00:02:41
clouds and water and that's the look I
00:02:44
was going for that's just and you
00:02:46
achieved it absolutely so let's talk
00:02:47
about water
00:02:48
this year's theme the sound of water why
00:02:51
we why is it called the sound of water
00:02:52
you know it's about using our voices
00:02:54
sound voices amplifying what we're doing
00:02:59
getting the message across that this
00:03:01
issue of clean water is still very much
00:03:03
a problem we've made some significant
00:03:06
progress over the last decade or two
00:03:09
we've cut the amount of people that have
00:03:12
no access to safe drinking water and
00:03:14
almost have it went from almost a
00:03:16
billion to now
00:03:17
six hundred and fifty million people and
00:03:20
a majority of them are in sub-saharan
00:03:21
Africa so it's an issue that affects our
00:03:23
continent we've been working at it for
00:03:25
ten years but it's just a drop in the
00:03:28
ocean no pun intended but I think what's
00:03:32
what's important is to know that in our
00:03:35
lifetime we can solve this water crisis
00:03:37
right it's something that's achievable
00:03:39
it's doable and that's why it's
00:03:43
important to invest in organizations
00:03:44
like face Africa organizations that are
00:03:47
African LEDs I asked for our lead who
00:03:49
are close to the issues and can really
00:03:52
come up with solutions that address this
00:03:54
problem so the sound of water is all
00:03:57
about getting people in this room to use
00:04:00
their voices to use their platforms so
00:04:03
to bring attention to this critical
00:04:05
issue you said 10 years is a big year 10
00:04:08
years it's a milestone year for us your
00:04:11
vision 10 years ago where did you think
00:04:13
this would go I had no vision I didn't
00:04:16
set out to start a non-profit focused on
00:04:20
water I went back to Liberia after
00:04:22
almost 20 years when the civil war
00:04:24
forced my family
00:04:26
and myself to leave and when I went home
00:04:29
I saw that there was an e there were
00:04:31
gaps everywhere the country's
00:04:33
infrastructure had been completely
00:04:35
destroyed due to the Civil War and so
00:04:37
myself and other young librarians knew
00:04:40
that we needed to step in and do
00:04:42
something we knew that it was up to us
00:04:44
to work with the governments to work
00:04:47
with other stakeholders to try and
00:04:49
rebuild our country literally from the
00:04:51
ground up and that's how I got involved
00:04:55
initially I wanted to focus on education
00:04:57
and then I realized that water was of
00:05:00
access to water was a barrier to
00:05:02
education and so you know it's a basic
00:05:05
necessity that everyone needs and if you
00:05:07
when you see people in communities
00:05:10
suffering or women and girls walking
00:05:12
long distances hours sometimes just to
00:05:15
get access to water that may be
00:05:17
contaminated I mean you have no choice
00:05:19
you have no option but to say okay what
00:05:21
can I do and that's the question I ask
00:05:23
myself what can I do in my own small way
00:05:26
and you realize that once you start
00:05:28
doing something that's authentic once
00:05:31
you start doing something that people
00:05:33
believe in and they see the impact then
00:05:35
they rally around you and that's why
00:05:37
we're here ten years today today it's
00:05:39
been just an incredible period of growth
00:05:42
of challenges but also incredible
00:05:45
support I have an amazing team of people
00:05:48
that worked with me to organize this
00:05:50
event but to also keep pushing the cause
00:05:52
forward what's been the biggest
00:05:54
challenge for you with face Africa in
00:05:57
the ten years that you've been doing
00:05:58
this I mean I it's always with any
00:05:59
nonprofit it's always fundraising and
00:06:01
funding and just having the resources
00:06:05
that you need to tackle an issue or to
00:06:08
tackle a major challenge like this so
00:06:10
how do we find how do we mobilize the
00:06:12
resources the support not just in terms
00:06:15
of financial support but technical
00:06:16
know-how what are some of the
00:06:18
innovations out there that are happening
00:06:19
around water where you can reach
00:06:21
millions of people and where how can we
00:06:25
share some of these knowledge with what
00:06:27
some of our other partners in developing
00:06:29
countries that have overcome this
00:06:32
challenge and can now share some of
00:06:35
those lessons and innovations and that's
00:06:37
not
00:06:37
nology so I think it's it's it's just
00:06:39
about resources from every level and how
00:06:42
can I'm sitting at home I'm just a quote
00:06:45
important regular person how can I
00:06:47
support you and the work that you're
00:06:48
doing or how can I support water check
00:06:51
the water to you know to help resolve
00:06:53
what a challenges around the world I
00:06:55
think we can all play a role in our own
00:06:57
small way by supporting organizations
00:06:59
that are doing this work investing in
00:07:01
them and and every little bit helps
00:07:05
you know their numbers floating around
00:07:08
but sometimes with even $10 as little as
00:07:12
$10 can help provide clean water to an
00:07:14
individual you know to give $10 a month
00:07:18
you can literally provide clean water to
00:07:21
that person for a lifetime right so
00:07:23
sometimes it's as small as just making a
00:07:25
small donation and supporting
00:07:26
organizations that are doing the work or
00:07:28
again using your voice you know to
00:07:32
highlight the issue to raise awareness
00:07:34
to champion the cause and and and
00:07:39
hopefully that will that will that will
00:07:43
kind of contribute to all of the efforts
00:07:44
that's happening around achieving the
00:07:47
Sustainable Development Goals six so I
00:07:49
know you've got a she looks stunning
00:07:51
thank you after setting I know you've
00:07:53
got to go yeah I'd like for you to just
00:07:55
finish this sentence you know me I am
00:07:59
powerful yeah yeah I am powerful you
00:08:05
know to be able to get all these people
00:08:07
in one room I think it takes a certain
00:08:09
level though a power should make that
00:08:11
happen we have a big goal tonight yes a
00:08:14
half a million dollars you know we're
00:08:16
looking to raise now I know we can do it
00:08:18
so I'm gonna let you go do that and
00:08:20
FaceTime you truly thank you thing
00:08:24
because the work that you're doing
00:08:26
literally changes lives you know I think
00:08:29
sometimes we drove that around changing
00:08:31
lives life changing this literally is
00:08:34
like you said this is the difference for
00:08:36
a young girl not having to walk miles to
00:08:38
get water which means she may not go to
00:08:40
school so I want to say thank you thank
00:08:42
you so much thank you for your
00:08:45
conviction thank you sir thank you I
00:08:47
appreciate it mmm thank you
