00:01:03
Good morning everyone!
00:01:09
Thank you for joining us
at the Tokyo Game Show 2024 Event Stage.
00:01:16
We’re reached the final day of the Tokyo Game Show,
00:01:20
so let us get started with the event you’ve all been waiting for,
00:01:23
the PlayStation® Presents “DEATH STRANDING 2” Special Stage!
00:01:30
What kind of information can we expect to be announced today?
00:01:35
We haven’t got that much!
00:01:37
Really?! Everyone has been looking forward to it.
00:01:39
We have plenty!
00:01:40
This will be a 90 minute event that goes down in history,
00:01:42
so I hope everyone enjoys it to the very end.
00:01:45
I will be your host for today's event, Shohei Shibata.
00:01:53
And while I'm sure there's no need for introductions,
00:01:59
could you please both tell us a little bit about yourselves?
00:02:03
My name is Daichi Miura. Thank you for having me here today.
00:02:10
I was invited to help host the event today,
00:02:13
Yes, the emcee duo.
00:02:16
But with Mr. Shibata here, there isn’t much for me to do...
00:02:20
Don’t be silly!
00:02:21
I'm an official supporter of the Tokyo Game Show this year,
00:02:26
so that’s why they invited me.
00:02:29
Think of it as a fan slipping into the event.
00:02:35
Now, for the director...
00:02:36
I'm Hideo Kojima.
00:02:38
Thank you all for coming so early in the morning.
00:02:39
I'm sure there are many people
that weren’t able to fit into this event today,
00:02:43
but we’ll also be streaming live, so make sure to tune in.
00:02:48
We only have 90 minutes and I've been told not to talk too much,
00:02:53
so I’ll be a very quiet Hideo Kojima today.
00:02:56
Thank you for having me.
00:03:00
As you said earlier, Mr. Miura,
00:03:04
you’re a big fan of Mr. Kojima’s work.
00:03:08
Definitely.
00:03:09
What kind of relationship do you both have?
00:03:11
We’re not dating!
00:03:14
We’re good friends.
00:03:17
Once we had the chance to meet
we’ve been in contact every now and again.
00:03:21
I think it was around 2015?
00:03:25
It might have been a little more recently.
00:03:30
If it was 2015, it’s been around 10 years
that you’ve both known each other.
00:03:39
He’d come to the studio on his way home and bring gifts and stuff.
00:03:45
I’ve been a big fan of Mr. Kojima’s work since I was a kid,
00:03:50
so this still feels like a dream.
00:03:53
I'm truly honored because I never thought
I’d have an opportunity like this in my life.
00:03:58
I hope that you’ll also be able to enjoy today as a fan.
00:04:03
So, Mr. Kojima, what will we be talking about today?
00:04:09
It’s been 5 years since we’ve been on the TGS stage,
00:04:12
and we have a few voice actors
from the Japanese version joining us,
00:04:16
so I’d like to make this into a Japan-focused festival.
00:04:25
Let’s invite a few guests that would suit such a festival.
00:04:35
Please give them a round of applause!
00:04:49
We have four guests joining us today that I’d like to introduce.
00:04:52
To start, please allow me to introduce
00:04:55
the voice actor for Sam Porter Bridges, Kenjiro Tsuda!
00:04:58
I'm Kenjiro Tsuda.
00:05:00
Thank you all for coming today.
00:05:02
I've been really looking forward to this.
00:05:04
We only have a short amount of time today,
but I hope you all enjoy it.
00:05:07
Thank you!
00:05:11
Next up, the voice actress for Fragile, Nana Mizuki!
00:05:15
Good morning everyone!
00:05:18
Everyone is so energetic, it’s almost like I'm at a concert.
00:05:23
Thank you all for coming so early in the morning.
00:05:27
We don’t have a huge amount of time, but let’s have fun.
00:05:33
Next up is Tomokazu Sugita.
00:05:37
Hello, I'm Sugita.
00:05:40
I can’t tell you who I'm going to play yet.
00:05:43
But! I was really looking forward to the stage today.
00:05:46
I hope you all feel the same! Thank you!
00:05:52
And lastly, we have Shion Wakayama.
00:05:56
Good morning everyone, I'm Shion Wakayama.
00:06:00
I'm really excited because I never thought I'd be standing at TGS
00:06:04
without the role I'm playing being revealed.
00:06:08
Let’s have fun today. Thank you!
00:06:15
We’ll be introducing Mr. Sugita’s and Ms. Wakayama’s roles later.
00:06:21
Yes, later.
00:06:23
They might be playing Sam!
00:06:25
What, really?! Is that even possible?
00:06:26
Haha, perhaps a double-casted role.
00:06:29
Could I please ask that you all take a seat?
00:06:34
Now, I’d like to ask you all a few questions.
00:06:37
Mr. Miura, it's really exciting to see
everyone lined up like this, isn’t it?
00:06:41
After hearing that I'd be on stage,
00:06:46
I feel very humbled to be included
in such an impressive lineup.
00:06:51
I'm also a big fan of everyone here,
so I'm really nervous.
00:06:58
It feels like I've come to a really amazing stage.
00:07:00
If there's anything you’d like to ask our guests please feel free to!
00:07:05
Okay, I’ll try not to make it too long.
00:07:08
Now, let's take a look back at the previous title, Death Stranding.
00:07:15
Mr. Kojima, the game was released in 2019...
00:07:19
I can’t believe it’s been 5 years already.
00:07:23
...could you tell us about the reaction you received at the time?
00:07:28
The game was met with mixed reactions
as it involved delivery and connection,
00:07:33
but three months after the release, COVID-19 hit and
00:07:37
the world became somewhat like the world of Death Stranding,
00:07:39
which caused people’s opinions of the game to change completely.
00:07:44
It seems like people felt the importance of deliveries
and the value of human connections.
00:07:48
It's not that I predicted it.
00:07:49
If anything, I made the game because
I didn’t want the world to turn out like that...
00:07:55
It felt like the game was in line with the times.
00:08:00
In the game, when cargo is delivered, nobody comes out to receive it and only a hologram is shown.
00:08:05
When it was first released,
some people questioned such a delivery system,
00:08:09
but after the pandemic, leaving packages
by front doors became widespread.
00:08:12
It feels like that was when people began to
sympathize with the idea.
00:08:17
Were there any challenges during production?
00:08:21
One of the challenges was creating
a worldview, story, look, and gameplay
00:08:28
that had never been seen before,
and something that would still be relevant 10 or 20 years from now
00:08:33
But it seems the game was a little ahead of its time.
00:08:37
Now would have been better timing.
00:08:40
It really made me wonder what was going on inside your head.
00:08:43
My head is a mess! I'm 61 years old.
00:08:48
Is that so?! I’d also like to hear from some of the cast members.
00:08:54
First, Mr. Tsuda.
00:08:56
How do you feel looking back at the previous game?
was in the previous game?
00:09:00
I can’t believe it’s been five years already.
00:09:05
It was my first time working on a title directed by Mr. Kojima,
and I was truly shocked by its scale,
00:09:15
Its unique worldview, and every moment throughout.
00:09:20
After its release, I was also surprised
by the scale of the game amongst other things,
00:09:28
with people all over the world playing it.
00:09:33
It’s something I really remember well.
00:09:40
I'm just so surprised that five years have passed already.
00:09:44
It went by so quickly.
00:09:46
How about yourself, Ms. Mizuki?
00:09:49
It really feels as if I was recording
for the first title just the other day.
00:09:59
It was such an astounding piece of work.
00:10:03
Whenever I work on a title directed by Mr. Kojima,
00:10:07
the role I play is always one that challenges me.
00:10:11
Fragile has a very troubled past,
00:10:15
so I struggled with how to interpret that and perform it.
00:10:23
I also recall feeling antsy during the event
we held prior to the launch of DS1,
00:10:27
as at the time we hadn’t revealed
the secrets of any of the characters.
00:10:33
The audio recording took place before the pandemic,
00:10:38
so we all got together for each recording session
and communicated with each other a lot
00:10:45
And that atmosphere was reflected in our performance,
00:10:53
which I think was great.
00:10:56
But I had no idea what Mr. Kojima
meant when he first told me that
00:11:00
this would be a delivery game.
00:11:04
I thought “What could he mean by that?”
00:11:08
The game does have combat,
but the approach to it is a little different.
00:11:13
It was such a unique idea that
00:11:16
I had a hard time understanding it at first,
but after going through the pandemic,
00:11:25
The world of Death Stranding began to feel truly realistic,
00:11:32
and I felt I was able to sympathize with the story even more.
00:11:39
The delivery element was certainly
a novel idea that isn’t seen in other games.
00:11:45
It was a mix of delivery plus traversal.
00:11:48
You'd struggle to climb up a mountain,
00:11:50
but it’s refreshing once you reach the top
and can take in the view.
00:11:55
Our system was a little different from
any other open world game,
00:12:00
so whether or not it would be accepted
by the audience was up to the voice actors's skills!
00:12:08
Thank you all for agreeing to work on a game you don't understand!
00:12:11
Especially through a Twitter DM!
00:12:14
That’s right, I was asked to work on the game
in a very modern way, through a Twitter DM.
00:12:26
In addition to Mr. Tsuda and Ms. Mizuki, Satoshi Mikami
00:12:29
will also be making an appearance in Death Stranding 2.
00:12:32
That’s right, Higgs will appear again
and will continue to be played by Satoshi Mikami.
00:12:37
Let’s all go to karaoke again!
00:12:40
We haven’t been in a while due to the pandemic.
00:12:43
Ms. Mizuki is way too good at singing.
00:12:46
Mr. Mikami is also good, but he steals all of my songs.
00:12:49
He’ll sing the first part and
then give the mic to me to sing the rest.
00:12:53
I'd love for you to go to karaoke after this event.
00:12:57
Five years have passed since the release of Death Stranding 1,
and the world has changed a lot in that time.
00:13:03
Since the announcement of
Death Stranding 2 late last year,
00:13:09
you’ve been steadily releasing
new information on the game.
00:13:15
First of all, is there anything you can tell us about
00:13:19
the current development status and
contents of Death Stranding 2?
00:13:26
As of this point, we’ve been working with
the staff in each department,
00:13:30
and created the entire game from start to finish.
00:13:34
I'd say we've finished about 30% to 40% in total.
00:13:37
As it’s an open world game,
players will be playing for a considerable amount of time.
00:13:40
I've been playing from the morning till night on
a console and have been adjusting the balance,
00:13:45
adding details, making corrections
and adjusting the music, and adding effects.
00:13:51
This is the most important part of the game-making process,
00:13:57
so it will take some time, and while it requires
a lot of hard work it’s also the most fun.
00:14:03
The overall finish of the game will change completely depending on how much work we put in at this stage.
00:14:08
We bring together all the different parts that each member of staff has been working on and adjust them to make a single game,
00:14:14
and we sometimes need to make changes to the story.
00:14:18
So just when the voice actors think
they've finished their work,
00:14:22
we call them back in.
00:14:24
We've started recording the Japanese audio,
00:14:27
but we're not even half way done yet.
00:14:30
Oh, really?
00:14:32
It will take a little while longer.
As soon as you think we're done,
00:14:36
I imagine you'll all be getting a phone call.
00:14:40
For example, if we were to make changes to the game controls,
you’d also have to change all of the related dialog as well.
00:14:44
It’s quite a lot of work because we also need to call
in the English voice actors and re-take the scenes.
00:14:49
So Mr. Miura, you made an appearance in Death Stranding 1,
00:14:52
but after hearing about Death Stranding 2,
are you looking forward to it?
00:14:58
I’m really just a fan of the game,
00:15:00
so I get excited every time
I see the various trailers being released.
00:15:12
I'm very curious to see what kind of journey
Sam will go on as he starts to connect the world,
00:15:21
and what lies ahead for him at the end.
00:15:27
So, what kind of characters will Sam meet on his journey?
00:15:34
I don’t believe I've mentioned the character's names before,
00:15:37
so today we’ve prepared a new video in Japanese showing the characters and who will be voicing them.
00:15:44
Yes, let's take a look.
00:16:03
This is the headquarters of our humble operation: the bridge of the DHV Magellan.
00:16:10
It's always like this when the DHV Magellan's on the move.
00:16:17
Meet Tarman, our resident doctor and geophysicist.
00:16:21
He's also the captain and pilot, in case you hadn't noticed.
00:16:26
And a fellow DOOMS sufferer.
00:16:29
The nav console offers a direct connection to the tar currents.
00:16:33
The downside being that we all have to bathe in chiralium.
00:16:37
Happy to have you aboard, Sam.
00:16:41
You'll have to excuse me if I don’t shake your hand.
00:16:47
You steer this ship solo?
00:16:49
Yeah—though the computer does most of the work.
00:16:53
So this is a submarine?
00:16:55
Spot on. We dive into the tar and use it to travel underground.
00:17:01
Just beneath the surface of the Earth, there are currents we can ride almost anywhere.
00:17:06
So what's your role in all this?
00:17:08
Me? I make sure Drawbridge's grand plans go off without a hitch.
00:17:13
So you're the commander?
00:17:15
That's right. These days, I'm Fragile in name only.
00:17:40
Lou?
00:17:42
Ah, so "Lou" is the child's name.
00:17:50
Hello? Excuse you. I too am a member of Drawbridge, believe it or not.
00:17:57
It is an honor, Sam.
00:18:01
That a puppet?
00:18:03
Puppet? No, no
00:18:06
I am alive and my own master!
00:18:09
This is Dollman—a man whose Ka wound up stuck inside a—well, you get it.
00:18:15
He used to be a spirit medium.
00:18:17
When I was still flesh and bone, of course.
00:18:21
Regrettably, my transformation cost me my talents.
00:18:26
Lou, where are you?
00:18:30
That was captivating!
00:18:34
The character's names were also revealed.
00:18:39
For Tarman, we’ve scanned the director
of Mad Max, George Miller.
00:18:44
The acting is done by someone else,
00:18:45
and the Japanese voice actor
for the character is Mitsuru Miyamoto.
00:18:48
I've been a fan of Mr. Miyamoto for a long time and
00:18:51
have always wanted to work with him.
00:18:54
I actually struggled to decide whether to cast Mr. Miyamoto or Hōchū Ōtsuka as Heartman in Death Stranding 1.
00:18:59
But I really wanted to meet Mr. Hōchū,
00:19:01
so I asked him to play Heartman, and now Mr. Miyamoto
will be making an appearance this time around.
00:19:05
How did George Miller react
when he saw the footage of Tarman in-game?
00:19:11
He was really happy.
00:19:14
How is the recording for Mr. Miyamoto coming along?
00:19:23
We are through about a third, I think.
00:19:25
What is it like working with him?
00:19:29
I've always wanted to work with him, so I'm very happy.
00:19:33
I didn’t even need to give him any instructions when recording.
00:19:38
He was like Tarman from the get go.
00:19:42
Next up, we have Dollman.
00:19:45
Mr. Sugita, have you finished recording the Japanese lines?
00:19:50
You would think so, but I'm actually nowhere near finished.
00:19:54
I think Dollman has the most lines besides Sam!
00:19:58
New lines are added for Dollman every day.
00:20:00
Every day?!
00:20:02
We add the lines, translate them,
00:20:04
then have Mr. Sugita come in to record.
00:20:07
Which is why I'm not done.
00:20:09
We scanned German film director
Fatih Akin for the character model,
00:20:14
and cast Jonathan Roumie
as the voice actor for the English version.
00:20:19
We've changed the lines quite a bit between
the English and Japanese versions,
00:20:24
similar to how Western films were
dubbed freely during the sixties in Japan.
00:20:30
You’ll be able to notice the difference
if you play both versions side by side.
00:20:36
Mr. Sugita, have you improvised any lines?
00:20:41
Yes, in order to adjust the length of the dialog.
00:20:49
I may have added a few lines that you've all probably heard before.
00:20:56
That’s right! They brought back memories of previous games.
00:21:01
Yes, the lines were almost exactly the same, so for those familiar with Mr. Kojima’s previous works...
00:21:09
Sometimes you ended up saying “Boss!”
00:21:14
We've used a few of those improvised lines.
00:21:20
I'm really looking forward to those parts.
00:21:23
What was Fatih Akin’s reaction
when you approached him about playing a doll character?
00:21:30
He was really happy.
00:21:32
He said he wanted to do the voice acting
for the German version as well,
00:21:34
but as his schedule didn’t allow it,
the voice acting is being done by someone else.
00:21:37
The other day, I went to where he was filming in Germany and gave him a doll,
00:21:40
which made him very happy.
00:21:42
What did you think when you saw the characters, Mr. Miura?
00:21:50
Every character in Mr. Kojima's titles is overflowing with charm from different angles.
00:21:58
Even at Tokyo Game Show this time around, there are lots of people cosplaying as characters from his works.
00:22:03
So it feels like there are two new additions to a list of really fascinating characters.
00:22:11
And while the name of the characters were revealed today,
00:22:18
there are still many mysteries surrounding Tarman, including his cute cat,
00:22:24
so I'm looking forward to learning about that.
00:22:28
Fragile and Sam have their own backstories, right?
00:22:32
And we’ll be slowly revealing the pasts of both Dollman and Tarman. It's like a misfortune contest.
00:22:42
So each character will have their own story.
00:22:45
Do you have any new information you can share with us?
00:22:50
Yes, we’ll introduce the female characters
whose names we have not yet revealed.
00:22:59
This is the Japanese version.
00:23:11
Thank you.
00:23:18
IIn the place where I came from,No one gave birth to babies.
00:23:22
They just stayed inside their mothers' bellies.
00:23:26
Well…in our world, babies are born and grow up to be adults.
00:23:32
Or at least they're supposed to.
00:23:35
It's only natural that Tomorrow wouldn't understand.
00:23:38
After all, she was living in a realm of the dead.
00:23:42
I wouldn't expect children to be born into such a place.
00:23:45
But, Rainy's baby will be born, right?
00:23:48
In due time, of course.
00:23:50
Isn't that so?
00:23:56
I'm sorry.
00:23:58
It's okay.
00:24:30
Ugh, that was terrible.
00:24:31
I thought it was pretty good, actually.
00:24:34
So, you'll be a mother who gives birth to her baby?
00:24:38
Mm-hm. And I just can't wait.
00:25:06
We were introduced to Tomorrow and Rainy, and it was also interesting to see the relationship between Dollman and Sam.
00:25:15
Tomorrow, Rainy, and Fragile become close friends.
00:25:20
This is a bit of a spoiler, but Sam takes Dollman out with him and they experience a lot of hardships together,
00:25:27
Although when they return, everyone is having a good time, which is the kind of contrast we are aiming for.
00:25:33
The change of pace seems really interesting.
00:25:37
Now, I’d like to hear from Ms. Wakayama.
00:25:40
This is the first time you’ve been working
with Mr. Kojima. How is the recording going?
00:25:50
I get really nervous each recording session I go to,
00:25:54
but I always receive such a warm welcome from everyone,
00:25:57
so I always make sure I'm giving it my all
when I play Tomorrow, no matter the cost.
00:26:07
Mr. Kojima, what do you think of her acting?
00:26:10
I'm a fan of Lycoris Recoil,
so I’ve wanted to work with her ever since watching it.
00:26:15
Really? I'm so happy to hear that.
00:26:19
When choosing an actress to play Elle Fanning,
00:26:21
I prioritized my own preferences,
00:26:24
and I knew I made the right choice from the first day of recording.
00:26:28
That’s great to hear.
00:26:29
I was especially nervous on the first day,
but I'm glad I was able to pull it off.
00:26:33
I feel a lot more relieved after hearing that.
00:26:38
What kind of direction did you give Elle Fanning
when she was playing her character?
00:26:43
She’s a great actress and has fantastic instincts.
00:26:46
She really brightened up the set and
I had a lot of fun working with her.
00:26:52
I also have some funny footage to share with you all later.
00:26:56
We finished Elle’s recording the other day,
00:27:00
but we might need to record more in the future.
00:27:04
Other than Tomorrow, we also saw Rainy,
a character played by Shioli Kutsuna.
00:27:13
Although we had announced that
Ms. Kutsuna would be making an appearance,
00:27:17
this is the first time her character has been announced.
00:27:21
What kind of character is she?
00:27:24
You can probably guess
what kind of character she is from her name.
00:27:29
She probably wins the misfortune contest!
00:27:33
But she has a very bright personality.
00:27:35
She first appears as this cheerful character
but her backstory is very moving.
00:27:44
What were your reasons for casting Shioli Kutsuna as Rainy?
00:27:47
First off, I’m a fan of hers.
00:27:50
On top of that, the role of Rainy requires the actress
to perform alongside the likes of
00:27:55
Norman Reedus and Lea Seydoux in Hollywood.
00:28:00
Shioli grew up in Australia and is a native English speaker,
00:28:05
and she has the ability to get along with everyone,
so I offered her the role.
00:28:10
I see. We received a video message from Ms. Kutsuna,
00:28:16
so let’s take a look.
00:28:19
Hello everyone. I’m Shioli Kutsuna.
00:28:26
This is the first reveal of my role in DS2.
00:28:34
I've been looking forward to this for a long time
and so this is super exciting.
00:28:40
My character is called Rainy and has the power to make it rain.
00:28:48
She has a lot going on and I can't wait for you to meet her.
00:28:55
Every step of working with Hideo-san has been unique.
00:29:02
The cinematography and script were obviously amazing and
00:29:08
a lot of the filming was unlike anything I’ve done before.
00:29:13
All of my co-stars were actors
that I have always really wanted to work with,
00:29:24
so it was a truly wonderful experience.
00:29:30
Above all, opportunities for me to
appear in a game like this are so rare,
00:29:35
so I am really looking forward to it.
00:29:40
It's still a little ways away,
00:29:43
but I can't wait for you to meet Rainy in-game. Bye bye!
00:29:55
She calls you “Hideo-san.”
00:29:58
Yes! Hideo-san.
00:30:00
What is it like working with her?
00:30:03
She did the motion capture performance
in English as well as the voice over for the Japanese dub.
00:30:11
It's rare for a member of the cast to do both like that.
00:30:20
It sounds like you had a lot of fun working together.
00:30:24
She's well-accustomed to Hollywood from her time filming “Deadpool” and “Invasion”,
00:30:30
so she and the other cast members got on great,
eating meals together and so on.
00:30:35
Everything went very smoothly.
00:30:37
It sounds like her personality is reflected in Rainy,
00:30:41
which is perhaps what makes her a captivating character.
00:30:45
Definitely.
00:30:46
Also, everyone does a bit of singing this time round.
00:30:51
Ms. Kutsuna also has a scene where she sings.
00:30:57
I can't wait to see that in-game.
00:31:01
Next up we have some footage from an audio recording session,
00:31:06
so while we watch this I’d like to hear a bit more from you
all about what it was like while recording.
00:31:13
Let’s take a look.
00:31:20
How embarrassing!
00:31:23
You get a strong sense of everyone getting on great.
00:31:27
This is in the studio at Kojima Productions.
00:31:31
How was it for all of you?
00:31:33
That was my first day recording.
00:31:40
I was so nervous.
00:31:44
Ms. Wakayama, what made you the most nervous?
00:31:49
I had very little experience with dubbing,
00:31:54
and DS2 is a dream job for me
so I was pretty nervous about it.
00:32:08
Mr. Sugita, do you have any stories from during the recording?
00:32:13
My impression can be summed up simply:
Mr. Kojima's games are fun to play.
00:32:22
With Dollman, most of the ways you can imagine using him in-game have been implemented.
00:32:32
I think players will probably want to try throwing Dollman.
00:32:35
Chances are you can throw him.
00:32:36
Ah, spoiler alert!
00:32:39
That's a huge spoiler.
00:32:43
If we’re imagining it,
00:32:44
chances are it’ll be in the game, and I can't wait.
00:32:52
Mr. Miura, what did you think when you saw the footage?
00:32:56
We don’t get many chances to see footage like this, right?
00:33:01
I’m so curious seeing everyone’s performance.
00:33:06
They seemed to be laughing at first;
I wonder what was going on in that scene?
00:33:18
Yes, it’s fun trying to picture what kind of scene it might be.
00:33:26
Definitely.
00:33:27
Also, I've visited the Kojima Productions office many times and
it's incredibly comfortable.
00:33:37
I think the notion of really creating a space for all kinds of people
00:33:44
to visit links back to Mr. Kojima's approach to his work.
00:33:53
When it comes to creating an office atmosphere,
00:33:58
do you have any particular preferences for
making sure everyone has a good time?
00:34:06
Yes, I believe working with actors and
voice actors comes down to trust.
00:34:10
Acting can be tough; it’s important to create an environment
00:34:16
where you can build that trust and have a good time.
00:34:22
This looks like you were having a meeting.
00:34:27
That's right, we typically all watch the scenes
we’ll record that day and discuss what we’ll do.
00:34:35
Mr. Tsuda?
00:34:38
Sam's recording sessions are quite long,
00:34:44
but it's always such an accommodating environment to work in.
00:34:49
I’m able to perform in the same room as my co-stars and
00:34:54
there's a lot of care put into each take.
00:35:04
For example, if you say,
"I want to do that again,"
00:35:06
Mr. Kojima is always obliging and
lets you do it as many times as you want.
00:35:11
It's a very luxurious way to record.
00:35:18
Mr. Tsuda, given that you also worked on DS1,
00:35:22
did the in-studio atmosphere differ much between 1 and 2?
00:35:30
There were also times on DS1
00:35:34
when we recorded the lines without knowing much about
what was coming next.
00:35:41
This time around, even when
I can't necessarily see the overall picture,
00:35:46
I have trust in Mr. Kojima and the staff.
00:35:52
On DS1, I had the chance to perform
alongside some true veteran actors,
00:35:58
whereas this time the team feels
a lot more youthful and the studio is different too,
00:36:06
So it's a fresh experience for me as a performer.
00:36:10
Every time we record it’s so much fun.
00:36:16
Death Stranding features
a lot of difficult technical terms, doesn't it?
00:36:22
It does, sorry about that, Fragile.
00:36:24
As the leader, you have to talk a lot.
00:36:28
How's that going?
00:36:30
I'm doing my best.
00:36:32
When new terms come up, I’m usually the one asking
“Is my accent and intonation OK here?”
00:36:36
We're not sure either so we look them up in a dictionary.
00:36:40
I imagine it’s tough to come up with
the accent for an original term coined especially for the game.
00:36:48
For sure, it’s just a wall of kanji and katakana characters.
00:36:52
My scripts have a lot of phonetic annotations,
00:36:55
which makes them tricky to read.
00:36:57
Ms. Mizuki and Mr. Otsuka (Heartman)’s lines are
pretty tough, sorry about that.
00:37:07
I’m essentially coming up with words
that don't exist in the real world.
00:37:12
Back in DS1, the player’s imagination was
set to run wild right from the intro.
00:37:20
Mr. Tsuda, when it comes to breathing life into the dialog,
00:37:23
is there anything in particular that you’re paying attention to?
00:37:27
Definitely - it's such a unique world.
00:37:32
Before recording, we are first shown footage of the scenes
that will be recorded that day.
00:37:43
Mr. Kojima usually says "This is only like 70% finished,"
00:37:47
but to me, it already looks like it's at 100!
00:37:50
So they continue to polish it even further.
00:37:53
We get the chance to look at the world being portrayed
in the game before starting to record.
00:37:58
We watch the footage when
it’s around 60% to 70% done before recording,
00:38:01
and this is where the voice actors' breathing,
sighs, grunts, and so forth are added.
00:38:07
These elements aren't included in the performance capture shoot,
00:38:10
so we then have the Hollywood folks work on it again
to do those added parts.
00:38:16
People say I'm crazy for doing this.
00:38:26
I’m really looking forward to parts like that too, and I really get a sense that you're all creating this together.
00:38:34
First you create it with the actors,
00:38:38
then remake it with the Japanese voice actors
00:38:42
before providing feedback to the Hollywood team.
00:38:46
That's amazing.
00:38:48
I'm looking forward to seeing
how the recording progresses.
00:38:52
There's still a fair amount left to do.
00:38:55
Mr. Tsuda and Mr. Sugita could be around forever.
00:39:02
As previously announced,
00:39:06
we have one more guest joining us from overseas.
00:39:12
Let’s take a look.
00:39:39
Administering shock. Stand clear.
00:39:49
Upper Beach reference frame confirmed.
00:39:51
UB coordinates are l=47.37, b=+6.32./*L, forty-seven point thirty-seven. B, plus six point thirty-two.
00:40:06
Hartman.
00:40:22
You're looking well, Sam.
00:40:25
Thank you for coming.
00:40:28
Oh. It's been a while.
00:40:32
Ticker still holding up?
00:40:35
Thanks to this support unit, I can flatline…
00:40:40
anytime…
00:40:43
anywhere...without worry.
00:40:45
No need for beds and the like either.
00:40:48
It's been 5 years,
00:40:52
Tokyo Game Show!
00:40:56
Thank you!
00:41:01
Allow me to introduce Heartman,
director Mr. Nicolas Winding Refn!
00:41:06
A round of applause please!
00:41:18
Mr. Refn, do you have a message to everyone
in the audience and those watching the stream?
00:41:33
Wait a moment.
00:41:53
Thank you very much!
00:42:37
It's clear that you are really good friends.
00:42:41
Heartman was a popular character in DS1,
00:42:44
and Nicolas really liked him too, so he will appear again.
00:42:48
He’s been given quite a few upgrades.
00:42:51
His heart has popped out and
things have gotten pretty tough for him.
00:42:59
He will also be joining the misfortune contest
with the others so keep an eye out for that.
00:43:04
Has it been a while since you and Nicolas last met?
00:43:10
We went for dinner two days ago.
00:43:13
We talk via text message most days.
00:43:16
What kind of things do you talk about?
00:43:19
We mainly send each other images.
00:43:21
Like photos and music. There's hardly any words.
00:43:26
We show off to each other, like DVDs we've bought.
00:43:32
So you encourage each other's creativity?
00:43:39
When we meet in person, we talk about what we're thinking about and what we're working on.
00:43:45
Mr. Refn, the topic of you two being
long-lost brothers came up earlier.
00:43:55
What kind of things do you like to talk about with Mr. Kojima?
00:45:11
Mr. Kojima?
00:45:16
I think he is my closest friend.
00:45:26
What a fantastic relationship.
00:45:31
Lastly, Mr. Refn, could you tell us
what to expect from DS2?
00:46:15
Thank you very much!
00:46:17
That was a really great comment.
00:46:20
Mr. Nicolas Winding Refn,
who plays Heartman.
00:46:24
Another round of applause please!
00:46:36
You two have a great friendship!
Are we embarrassing you, Mr. Kojima?
00:46:46
No no, not at all!
00:46:49
OK, time for some new information.
00:46:55
I’d like to show you another scene from the game.
00:46:58
I thought it would be boring to just show some walking scenes,
00:47:01
so I wanted to introduce an in-game event
where you use an instant camera.
00:47:04
We have implemented a photo mode in the game,
00:47:07
but this is a separate event where you can take and re-take photos as many times as you like.
00:47:11
The resulting images will also have some impact on the story.
00:47:15
I've been teased for using Hollywood actors like this,
00:47:18
but please take a look.
00:47:47
If you point the camera at them do they strike a pose?
00:47:51
That's right, they look at you in real time.
00:47:56
Today we’re just showing three locations,
00:48:00
but you can choose where to take photos inside the Magellan.
00:48:03
You can re-take photos as many times as you like,
00:48:06
and they will become relevant to the story.
00:48:09
Ah, so they have an impact on the story.
00:48:13
We captured this in LA, and it took like the whole day.
00:48:22
Léa is really getting into it.
00:48:26
She’s great. Léa loves to dance and used to
copy Michael Jackson when she was a kid.
00:48:32
She’s really good!
00:48:38
This is an in-game event separate from photo mode.
00:48:44
Everyone is a bit quiet; are you still with us?
00:48:46
You can post the photos that you take on the wall.
00:48:55
Points are awarded based on factors like
whether they are facing the camera head-on,
00:49:00
or whether their eyes are closed, etc.
00:49:03
You can take multiple photos to find the perfect shot.
00:49:05
Our staff just play with this
all the time instead of checking the game.
00:49:12
If you take a picture at the exact moment
someone blinks, will you lose points?
00:49:18
For example, if their eyes are slightly closed or
they aren't quite facing the camera head-on
00:49:22
you can still use the pictures but they won't be as good.
00:49:25
You can also zoom in on just one of them.
00:49:28
It's a bit of a side story.
00:49:33
It sounds like a lot of fun, what do you think, Mr. Miura?
00:49:38
As with the characters,
00:49:40
there's always some mystery in
everything Mr. Kojima comes up with.
00:49:45
I wonder how this will appear in DS2 and relate to the story...
00:49:54
Everyone should try to get a good photo here.
00:49:58
You might regret it if you don't!
00:50:00
DS1 also hinted at a lot of things that
didn't become fully clear until later on.
00:50:04
I guess this could be one of those things.
00:50:09
I think this mode looks incredible,
including that mysterious aspect that it has.
00:50:13
All three of them dance so well, too.
00:50:19
Also, the costumes the characters are
wearing in-game are insanely cool.
00:50:29
These are from a line we’re making in
collaboration with ACRONYM.
00:50:33
Oh, I see. These are so stylish.
00:50:37
I'd definitely like to try these on myself.
00:50:41
Well, we thought you might want to try these on,
00:50:46
so we have asked the designer, Errolson Hugh,
to join us today!
00:50:57
Please give him a warm welcome!
00:51:05
He has come to deliver these to us.
00:51:11
Wow, that's incredible.
00:51:13
Are there actual jackets in there?
00:51:21
Oh wow, that’s impressive!
00:51:24
That's so cool.
00:51:34
Thank you very much.
00:51:43
The jacket Ms. Mizuki is wearing right now is actually in the game...
00:51:48
It's the one that Fragile wears, right?
00:51:52
It's a lovely outfit. It's really cool.
00:51:59
Everyone has one on.
00:52:02
These will actually be available to buy in real life,
as well as being in-game clothing.
00:52:13
That’s right, these very jackets. There are two colors.
00:52:21
That's so cool. They will be available from today,
00:52:29
September 29th from around 12pm.
00:52:39
Check out Kojima Productions' official account on
X for more details.
00:52:44
Mr. Miura, it really suits you.
00:52:47
Glad I said it.
00:52:49
It looks great and comes in yellow and black, right?
00:52:57
And it's really warm too.
00:53:01
Oh, you can carry it on your back when you take it off.
00:53:09
The details are amazing.
00:53:12
It feels so well-made.
00:53:16
We talked about the in-game photo event earlier,
00:53:21
but now we'd like to take a photo together here.
00:53:28
Please look at the photographer in the center,
00:53:32
like in the earlier footage, lets pose.
00:53:47
Ms. Wakayama, looking good!
00:53:55
Great! Wonderful smiles everyone.
00:54:01
Thank you. Ms.Wakayama, how does it feel?
00:54:06
Really warm.
So comfortable that I want to keep wearing it.
00:54:11
Truly amazing.
00:54:13
It's perfect for the coming season.
00:54:17
I hope everyone will try it out.
00:54:23
Mr. Sugita, what do you think?
00:54:24
It's more than just merchandise,
it's something extraordinary. It's truly fantastic.
00:54:30
Mr. Tsuda, how about you?
00:54:33
The attention to detail is incredible.
00:54:39
Kojima Productions' merchandise always has such wonderful items.
00:54:45
By the way, these are also a DS pants.
00:54:51
Today, I'm wearing all DS. Even my socks are DS.
00:54:56
My socks are Higgs' socks too.
00:55:02
Ms. Mizuki, how about you? It really suits you.
00:55:05
It's very light and warm.
00:55:08
The functionality and design are excellent,
so I'm kind of wishing I could just take it home...
00:55:16
no, no! I'll definitely buy it.
00:55:20
Now, last but not least,
we'd like to hear a message from the designer, Errolson.
00:56:10
Thank you very much, please give him a round of applause, Errolson Hugh, the designer of ACRONYM.
00:56:30
There is still more information.
00:56:37
There is a world premiere game footage.
00:56:44
There is a private room for Sam inside the Magellan.
00:56:50
And when certain conditions are met,
a special event happens there.
00:56:56
You can control the camera to rotate 360 degrees in real-time,
00:57:01
but first, let's take a look.
00:57:06
OK, let's take a look!
00:58:23
Mr. Miura, how was it?
00:58:30
I've been nervous this whole time.
00:58:32
In the previous game,
I had a role as a Prepper called The Musician,
00:58:45
but this time I get to dance with Dollman.
00:58:48
I created both the music and choreography for DS2.
00:58:55
We captured it through performance capture.
00:58:59
The song has actually premiered for the world just now in this footage.
00:59:06
Daichi Miura appears in the DS world as a musician,
00:59:11
and the Dollman and others are huge fans of his.
00:59:16
I can't say any more, but he is also involved in the storyline.
00:59:21
Since I was given such a wonderful opportunity,
00:59:26
I incorporated my favorite moves from DS into the lyrics and choreography.
00:59:36
Like the motion of Lou sucking his thumb,
00:59:42
the part with the lyrics 'umbrella' features a movement of when spikes pop out from Fragile's shoulder,
00:59:51
And the clicking motion of the Odradek.
00:59:59
I incorporated these DS elements into the dance.
01:00:01
You can view it freely in 360 degrees,
01:00:04
so everyone can learn the choreography using this.
01:00:07
So that means even Mr. Sugita can learn and dance it, right?
01:00:12
Wh-what did you just say?
01:00:15
I didn't quite catch that.
01:00:18
It already feels I've collaborated with you Mr. Sugita.
01:00:23
We saw it on the screen, but I'd love to see the actual dance.
01:00:30
Actually we've been told it's okay to perform live on this stage.
01:00:40
This is going to be the world premiere of both the song and the dance.
01:00:47
So I'd like to perform it today.
01:00:53
Now, we'll get to see Mr. Miura's live performance.
01:01:00
Mr. Miura, please go ahead and get ready.
01:01:05
Alright, thank you very much.
01:01:08
Since we need some time for the stage setup,
01:01:16
let's hear from Mr. Kojima as we watch footage of
Mr. Miura's capture session.
01:01:21
It took us about 2 years to develop everything together,
including the song and choreography.
01:01:30
As you'll see in the footage, we started with scanning.
01:01:36
We designed the costume, fabricated it, and did a test shoot.
01:01:44
This is the outfit that appeared in the game earlier.
01:01:49
At first, we shot Mr. Miura only, then we included the costume in the next shot.
01:01:53
After that, we did the performance capture once the song and dance were completed.
01:02:00
All in all, it took about 2 years.
01:02:06
This is the cloth simulation for the costume.
01:02:11
Without this, the real-time processing would be extremely heavy.
01:02:14
Firstly, we had Mr. Miura dance, and if there was too much movement on the costume, we adjusted the design.
01:02:21
This is from a while back, but here you can see the dancers that came for the performance capture.
01:02:36
So, you need to go this far to create footage that can be viewed from any 360-degree angle.
01:02:40
Right, we created choreography that looks great from any angle, including from below.
01:02:50
This is the rehearsal footage.
01:02:55
In this footage, there are four dancers,
01:02:59
but today the stage space is limited, so we'll have 2 dancers.
01:03:07
It took months to complete, right?
01:03:13
So, the recording took one day,
01:03:16
but we had many rehearsals and feedback sessions leading up to it,
01:03:20
which resulted in crafting a really great song.
01:03:25
Everyone, please dance to this new song by him on TikTok and whatnot.
01:03:36
It'll definitely become viral.
01:03:39
Did the dancers record everything in just one day?
01:03:49
We did multiple rehearsals in another place.
01:03:54
Now we know the piece went through various stages to be completed.
01:04:02
Well, it looks like Mr. Miura is ready.
01:04:19
Ladies and gentlemen,
Daichi Miura's TGS special performance!
01:08:21
Thank you very much!
01:08:34
Special performance by Daichi Miura, Shingo Okamoto, and KELO.
01:08:41
I wish we could've watched it from the audience seats as well.
01:08:45
Me too, though I saw it during rehearsal.
01:08:49
What did you think of the excitement of
the audience and the performance?
01:08:53
It took us 2 years to complete, but absolutely worth it.
01:08:58
I'm sure, everyone will love this song all around the world.
01:09:03
Absolutely. The song performed just now, "Horizon Dreamer" will be available for streaming from 12am on September 30th.
01:09:12
It will be available on various paltforms, so please give it a listen.
01:09:22
Mr. Tsuda, how did you like the song?
01:09:23
Well, it's just amazing. I can’t believe he can sing and dance like that without getting out of breath. Truly impressive.
01:09:37
Mr. Sugita, do you feel like dancing now?
01:09:40
... Impossible for me!
01:09:42
Thank you so much. It’s truly an honor to be able to perform on such a special stage.
01:09:52
Thank you. How was it premiering the song on this stage?
01:09:58
I had been looking forward to this day for a long time.
01:10:03
Being able to craft something meaningful with someone I greatly admire,
01:10:09
like Mr. Kojima, has been a very valuable experience in my life.
01:10:14
As an artist, I'd like to become a person who cherishes relationships like Mr. Kojima,
01:10:20
nurturing the trust with people, and create music that is loved by everyone.
01:10:28
I've learned so much while working with Mr. Kojima.
It's truly an honor. Thank you.
01:10:39
I really want everyone to see this performance in the game as well.
01:10:43
Yes, it’s available to watch as an in-game event,
01:10:50
so please watch it many times and make Mr. Sugita dance.
01:10:56
Thank you very much.
01:11:00
There are still some secrets, right?
01:11:03
Yes, there are many. We just revealed the cover art, but actually, Sam is in the middle of it.
01:11:17
I am very honored to have been able to collaborate like this.
01:11:25
The song will be available from tonight,
so please check it out.
01:11:33
Now, it’s time to conclude the PlayStation® Presents 'DEATH STRANDING 2' Special Stage.
01:11:41
Lastly, we have some announcements from Kojima Productions.
01:11:47
First, there is going to be an exhibition at PARCO.
01:11:52
November marks the 5th anniversary of Death Stranding,
01:12:01
so we’re partnering with PARCO, selling merch there, so please come and visit!
01:12:10
The building even has PARCO on it.
01:12:13
The actual building won't be like that, but please visit PARCO and enjoy.
01:12:17
It will start on November 8th in Shibuya, then it will travel to Nagoya and Osaka.
01:12:24
Please stay tuned for more information. And next, we have another announcement.
01:12:31
A new program on TBS Radio will start from October 2nd.
01:12:35
10 minutes while you commute,
01:12:38
10 minutes at work,
01:12:40
10 minutes with your loved ones,
01:12:42
10 minutes alone,
01:12:44
10 minutes on a sleepless night,
01:12:47
or 10 minutes in a crisis.
01:12:49
How do you want to spend your 10 minutes?
01:12:54
"Hideo Kojima's "Let's Make This The Greatest 10 Minutes."
01:13:03
We’ll be taking the last 10 minutes of
"After 6 Junction 2" for our talk.
01:13:10
It'll be over quickly because it's only 10 minutes.
01:13:17
And we've asked Kikuko Inoue for the narration.
01:13:22
Just heard the narration done by Kikuko Inoue.
01:13:24
Yes! and it will start next month.
01:13:27
I'm looking forward to it.
01:13:29
This also starts on October 2nd, in just a few days. Please make sure to listen to "KOJI10" on TBS Radio.
01:13:41
Did you come up with the name 'KOJI10' yourself?
01:13:44
Yes, "KOJI10". It has a lot of meanings, like "10" in japanese is "ju-" and it also sounds like "Jiyu" which means "freedom."
01:13:50
TBS Radio starts on October 2nd.
01:13:55
Now, with the 5th anniversary of DEATH STRANDING and the upcoming DEATH STRANDING 2,
01:14:02
Kojima Productions shows no signs of slowing down!
01:14:05
And finally, could we have a message from
everyone to the fans eagerly awaiting DS2?
01:14:16
Starting with Mr. Miura.
01:14:20
Thank you so much for allowing me to be a part of such a fantastic stage today.
01:14:26
I'm just a fan myself, so I’m going to watch the trailers released today,
01:14:33
let my imagination run wild, and look forward to the release of DS2 with great excitement and anticipation.
01:14:47
Now, let's hear from Mr. Sugita.
01:14:49
Some people say the most fun part is imagining how you’ll play the game before release,
01:14:57
but I think this game will far exceed those imaginations.
01:15:00
Until the release, please enjoy watching the trailers and let your anticipation grow.
01:15:06
Please stay tuned and thank you.
01:15:11
Next, Ms. Wakayama.
01:15:13
Thank you all so much for coming today.
01:15:17
At first, I was trying to stay focused and speak properly as a cast member,
01:15:23
but as the event went on, I found myself enjoying it completely as a fan.
01:15:29
There was so much information that I was seeing for the first time, and I couldn't stop getting goosebumps.
01:15:32
I really can't wait to play it.
01:15:37
Let’s all look forward to the release together.
01:15:40
Thank you for your continued support.
Thank you so much for today!
01:15:47
Next, Mizuki-san.
01:15:50
Thank you all so much for today.
01:15:52
We've only recorded about a third of the content so far, so there are still many parts of the story that I don’t know yet.
01:16:00
I’m really looking forward to seeing the surprises that await in the scenarios ahead.
01:16:08
Within the third of it, as you saw today, there are plenty of playful aspects other than the main scenario,
01:16:19
and there are many elements we still couldn't talk about today, including the music.
01:16:28
You'll all be surprised! The game is packed with so many features that it will take you so many days to fully explore.
01:16:40
When DS2 is released, I hope you’ll consider taking a DS2 vacation to fully enjoy it.
01:16:53
Thank you very much for today.
01:16:58
And now, Mr. Tsuda.
01:17:00
Thank you to everyone who came to the venue today and everyone watching the stream around the world.
01:17:09
From DS1, it has been a series of shocks and emotional moments, and I'm truly honored to be part of such a project.
01:17:25
I'm also incredibly honored to continue being a part of DS2.
01:17:35
Every recording sessions, I am filled with emotions and surprises.
01:17:41
The DS series has been changing the world through
the video game medium and has renewed appreciation
01:17:56
in a world that has been changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
01:18:04
Still, I don’t think I've grasped the whole picture yet.
01:18:09
Sometimes, when Mr. Kojima explains things, there are moments when I have no idea what he’s talking about.
01:18:20
But I’m sure once it’s released, I’ll be able to look back and say, 'Ah, so that’s what he meant,' and be deeply moved.
01:18:28
I am very excited to see a whole new world unfolding, created by Mr. Kojima, the expert staff who gather around him,
01:18:38
renowned actors from around the world, and us Japanese voice actors.
01:18:49
I myself am really looking forward to it.
01:18:56
I hope everyone is as excited as I am.
Thank you very much for today!
01:19:09
And finally, could we hear a few words from Mr. Kojima to everyone around the world?
01:19:15
Thank you all for joining us from early in the morning.
01:19:18
There might even be people who were not able to get into this stage event.
01:19:21
Also to everyone watching the livestream from around the world, thank you.
01:19:25
This was our first TGS stage in 5 years, and it was a bit more focused for the fans in Japan,
01:19:35
but I hope you all enjoyed it.
01:19:42
Today, we didn't announce the release date, but of course, it has been decided, and we are working towards it.
01:19:51
There are many things involved with the timing of release.
01:19:55
As mentioned, it's going to be released in 2025.
01:19:57
We will announce the specific release date at some point next year.
01:20:04
And as I mentioned earlier, we're still in the process of putting the game together and it’s not yet complete,
01:20:12
but I have a very good feeling about it.
01:20:18
DS2 is turning out to be an even more unique game than DS1.
01:20:23
I don’t think there’s anything else like it.
01:20:29
DS is a game to experience connections.
01:20:37
Unlike many online fighting games,
it’s based on the theme of connections.
01:20:46
With the rise of remote work and interactions on
social media due to the pandemic,
01:20:53
I still believe that true communication happens
when we gather in person like this,
01:20:58
seeing each other's faces, sharing the same air,
and bring home everything with you.
01:21:02
With Sony having a booth at TGS this year, we decided to have a stage presentation for the first time in 5 years.
01:21:11
We created a stage to truly connect with everyone here, and then livestream the connection to the world to further expand it.
01:21:22
I'm sure everyone was able to experience it.
01:21:25
I hope we can have a similar stage next year as well.
01:21:32
Thank you very much for today.
01:21:36
We're looking forward to next year as well.
01:21:39
Today's stage main personality Mr. Hideo Kojima,
01:21:41
Once again, thank you to everyone in the venue today and everyone watching the livestream.
01:21:46
Thank you for staying with us until the end.
01:21:49
Please stay tuned for further updates.
01:21:53
This concludes the 'DEATH STRANDING 2' Special Stage.
01:21:58
We hope to see you again. Thank you!
