  • 00:00:00
I'll rather keep it real with you
  • 00:00:05
hey guys it's me minu back with another
  • 00:00:07
video I'm gonna try to make this video
  • 00:00:09
this is the only time I've made a video
  • 00:00:12
that has been scripted where I wrote
  • 00:00:14
down the things I want to say
  • 00:00:16
um honestly like I have so many
  • 00:00:20
video ideas and like there's just so
  • 00:00:22
many things that I would love to do on
  • 00:00:24
this channel that I just can't do
  • 00:00:27
um as one person with inconsistent
  • 00:00:30
capacity it's like as I like to say
  • 00:00:33
um most I can commit to is a video a
  • 00:00:35
week though I would love to make so many
  • 00:00:37
more videos but I would need help if I
  • 00:00:39
was going to do all of that
  • 00:00:41
um and I just don't have the the base to
  • 00:00:44
to to be able to bring somebody else in
  • 00:00:47
I have to do this all by myself man all
  • 00:00:48
that all the ideas the recording the
  • 00:00:50
editing and while it may come easy to
  • 00:00:52
some people or they may be in a
  • 00:00:54
situation where they can afford to do
  • 00:00:56
that all day long and and pump out great
  • 00:00:58
content I'm not in that situation I have
  • 00:01:00
to work a lot and um adults a lot a lot
  • 00:01:05
so what I want to talk to talk about
  • 00:01:08
today I've been meaning to talk about
  • 00:01:09
    for a few weeks now
  • 00:01:12
um I don't really make videos on this
  • 00:01:14
    channel about language learning because
  • 00:01:16
I have a ridiculous amount of anxiety
  • 00:01:20
around my abilities in terms of language
  • 00:01:24
    learning
  • 00:01:26
um I will say now I feel like I've done
  • 00:01:30
    a lot better
  • 00:01:31
um with my Spanish like my my reading
  • 00:01:34
and writing in terms of Spanish has
  • 00:01:36
    gotten a lot better
  • 00:01:37
um and I would say in terms of Japanese
  • 00:01:41
I'm still at the level I'm at this this
  • 00:01:43
weird intermediate level that I've been
  • 00:01:46
unable to get past for like the last few
  • 00:01:48
    years unfortunately
  • 00:01:50
um I am on uh hello talk and I am
  • 00:01:53
talking to Japanese people who I'm able
  • 00:01:55
to communicate with them and they
  • 00:01:57
understand me and they think that I do a
  • 00:01:59
great job so that makes me happy
  • 00:02:02
um but if you want me to stay here and
  • 00:02:04
    talk to you I will
  • 00:02:05
Go mute real fast this actually happened
  • 00:02:08
to me when I was in Mexico and I met my
  • 00:02:11
    friend's grandmother and she immediately
  • 00:02:12
started talking to me in Spanish and
  • 00:02:14
talking really really fast and I
  • 00:02:16
    immediately just went completely mute
  • 00:02:19
like I just froze up it was just like
  • 00:02:26
and just like doing that and then she
  • 00:02:30
was like tell me oh you're so beautiful
  • 00:02:32
    and I'm just like
  • 00:02:36
    and my friend
  • 00:02:38
uh and I think at some point I said like
  • 00:02:40
thank you or something I managed to get
  • 00:02:42
that out and my friend was like oh
  • 00:02:44
that's so great you took a compliment
  • 00:02:46
and I was like yeah I was so like my
  • 00:02:49
body like locked up in that moment it
  • 00:02:52
    was so much
  • 00:02:54
um and so that tends to happen to me
  • 00:02:56
like I have the the thoughts in my head
  • 00:02:58
when I'm trying to speak to people and
  • 00:03:00
it don't come out but in terms of like
  • 00:03:03
reading and writing I do very well
  • 00:03:05
um something that I struggle with in
  • 00:03:07
    Japanese and this isn't I don't even
  • 00:03:08
know if anyone follows me who speaks
  • 00:03:10
Japanese but something I struggle with
  • 00:03:12
    is like
  • 00:03:13
    more complicated sentences so something
  • 00:03:16
    like
  • 00:03:17
um the fact that you think I'm a great
  • 00:03:20
    cook makes me happy
  • 00:03:22
saying something like that in Japanese
  • 00:03:24
    is real hard for me
  • 00:03:26
um and and it's like a sentence nestled
  • 00:03:30
    in a sentence and it's like I just I've
  • 00:03:32
been stuck on that level for so long
  • 00:03:33
it's very frustrating and I have a hard
  • 00:03:35
time getting over it but anyway that's
  • 00:03:37
not what I want to talk about
  • 00:03:38
or it is what I want to talk about I
  • 00:03:40
don't know what I want to talk about in
  • 00:03:42
    this video was
  • 00:03:45
um the language learning app link made
  • 00:03:48
    by Steve Kaufman
  • 00:03:49
because I've been someone who had been
  • 00:03:51
pushing Link in my language learning
  • 00:03:54
circles for a while I was everybody was
  • 00:03:57
on this mochi mochi [ __ ] I was telling
  • 00:03:59
them to go download link and I was
  • 00:04:02
telling them to even pay for link like I
  • 00:04:04
was a big proponent of it for so long
  • 00:04:07
and I had like a yearly subscription and
  • 00:04:09
    everything
  • 00:04:11
    um
  • 00:04:12
    and I just fell off
  • 00:04:14
and I wanted to talk about it so
  • 00:04:17
um I've had link for how many years have
  • 00:04:21
    I had link
  • 00:04:23
    probably about three years now
  • 00:04:25
um and I only have a 222 day streak
  • 00:04:29
    while I had one
  • 00:04:31
um because I would constantly lose my
  • 00:04:33
streak due to glitches in the app
  • 00:04:36
sometimes I could sneak and get back get
  • 00:04:38
it back through to through glitches in
  • 00:04:40
    the app
  • 00:04:42
um so I would say at the time that I
  • 00:04:45
wrote down what I want to say I hit 222
  • 00:04:47
    again
  • 00:04:49
um app glitched out next thing I know is
  • 00:04:51
like oh you lost your streak
  • 00:04:54
and so many times has this happened
  • 00:04:56
before that I used up all of my coins
  • 00:04:59
that I had gotten over the three years
  • 00:05:02
of daily you know Japanese practice I
  • 00:05:05
used up all my coins and
  • 00:05:08
I was like oh this is this is it I can't
  • 00:05:10
get another streak and I emailed
  • 00:05:14
um well no the last time I lost my
  • 00:05:16
streak I used the last of my coins and I
  • 00:05:18
emailed them saying like hey like I keep
  • 00:05:22
losing my streak because of these app
  • 00:05:23
glitches could you at least give me my
  • 00:05:24
coins back because it could cost like
  • 00:05:27
what how many coins is it
  • 00:05:30
let me let me pull up my list real quick
  • 00:05:31
hold on it takes 500 coins to get your
  • 00:05:35
streak back and if you do like the
  • 00:05:37
lowest amount to get your streak it'd be
  • 00:05:40
like 50 coins so you get like 50 coins a
  • 00:05:42
day so if you're doing the lowest amount
  • 00:05:44
getting 50 coins a day they take you 100
  • 00:05:47
    days
  • 00:05:48
to get enough coins to repair your
  • 00:05:51
streak for one one day you know what I
  • 00:05:54
    mean that's a lot that's a lot and it's
  • 00:05:56
    very imbalanced and it's very
  • 00:05:58
frustrating so I was like I you know can
  • 00:06:00
you give me my coins back and I got a
  • 00:06:02
response saying no we can't give you
  • 00:06:03
your coins back but next time you lose
  • 00:06:05
your streak just let us know we'll give
  • 00:06:06
it you'll give you the streak back
  • 00:06:08
    didn't know that okay
  • 00:06:10
so you know best Forest you know some
  • 00:06:13
weeks later it happens again I say hey
  • 00:06:15
can you repair my streak they're like
  • 00:06:16
    yep cool
  • 00:06:18
um a few days later happens again and I
  • 00:06:21
was just like oh this is it I'm done
  • 00:06:23
there's nothing more I can do I'm so
  • 00:06:25
sick of this like I've made it to almost
  • 00:06:27
    a 500 day streak before
  • 00:06:30
um and then lost it because I ran out of
  • 00:06:33
coins and I had to start all over again
  • 00:06:36
um because of glitches in the app where
  • 00:06:37
it'll say that you have have reached
  • 00:06:39
your streak when really you haven't
  • 00:06:42
um or it'll say you haven't reached your
  • 00:06:44
streak when you have it was very very
  • 00:06:46
inconsistent and um it was very
  • 00:06:49
frustrating so I made it to 222 days
  • 00:06:51
before I was like oh I'm done there's
  • 00:06:53
    nothing more I can do
  • 00:06:55
um and that's when I wrote out
  • 00:06:57
everything for this video and then after
  • 00:06:59
I wrote everything for this video I went
  • 00:07:01
to the website on my computer and
  • 00:07:04
    surprise surprise my computer the
  • 00:07:06
computer version of Link suddenly was
  • 00:07:08
like you do have enough coins for this
  • 00:07:10
and so I repaired my streak I went again
  • 00:07:13
for another 40 days or so got to 262
  • 00:07:17
days lost my streak and was like you
  • 00:07:19
    know what
  • 00:07:20
    you can have it
  • 00:07:23
    um
  • 00:07:24
so in an effort to try to stay on track
  • 00:07:27
for this video because I'm very bad at
  • 00:07:29
doing that I have some lists of some
  • 00:07:32
things that I wanted to go over
  • 00:07:34
    um some
  • 00:07:36
Pros some cons you know I'm going to
  • 00:07:39
talk about customer service talk about
  • 00:07:40
UI I'm talking about all of this stuff
  • 00:07:41
and um I will say though just overall
  • 00:07:45
losing my streak made me feel free
  • 00:07:49
    so
  • 00:07:50
    if that tells you anything
  • 00:07:53
here we go um so some pros I want to get
  • 00:07:56
and I read it on my phone okay some pros
  • 00:07:58
that I want to bring up is that link
  • 00:08:00
does work really well with YouTube you
  • 00:08:02
    know downloading YouTube videos
  • 00:08:03
important to captions works really well
  • 00:08:06
I've been able to download some
  • 00:08:08
    YouTubers
  • 00:08:09
um that I like and you know follow along
  • 00:08:12
with their stories and everything like
  • 00:08:13
that listening to the video and all that
  • 00:08:15
stuff that's a really good thing
  • 00:08:19
um I like the many stories the mini
  • 00:08:21
stories take you through what is
  • 00:08:23
supposed to be the most common words in
  • 00:08:25
the language you know so you start off
  • 00:08:27
    with you know
  • 00:08:29
small conversations like hello who are
  • 00:08:31
    you
  • 00:08:32
um you go up to things like what time it
  • 00:08:34
is and then you eventually get to things
  • 00:08:36
    like
  • 00:08:37
um so and so had an important business
  • 00:08:39
    meeting she's hoping that this
  • 00:08:41
presentation will get her the promotion
  • 00:08:42
that she's been looking for she goes to
  • 00:08:44
tell her boss about it and he gives her
  • 00:08:46
words of advice it's just because it
  • 00:08:48
gets really complicated but it's good
  • 00:08:51
that it's that those are already
  • 00:08:52
available to you to take you through
  • 00:08:54
it's like its own course right
  • 00:08:57
um I will say that I originally went
  • 00:08:59
through it with Japanese until I got to
  • 00:09:00
that point where my brain didn't want to
  • 00:09:02
function anymore I went through it again
  • 00:09:04
    with Spanish
  • 00:09:05
um and I felt that it helped me really
  • 00:09:07
grasp the language a lot faster going
  • 00:09:09
through those many stories so I will say
  • 00:09:11
that that is a huge Pro that I do
  • 00:09:14
    appreciate about the app
  • 00:09:16
    um
  • 00:09:17
another thing that I would say the app
  • 00:09:19
has gotten much better at is kanji on
  • 00:09:22
the Japanese side when I first started
  • 00:09:24
using link a few years ago the kanji was
  • 00:09:27
not it was not making any sense so there
  • 00:09:29
was a lot of things where by the time I
  • 00:09:32
started using link I was already at this
  • 00:09:33
like intermediate level so there was a
  • 00:09:35
lot of things that I was going through
  • 00:09:36
    where
  • 00:09:38
it was separating the actual word the
  • 00:09:40
word in hiragana from the kanji work
  • 00:09:43
and it was very confusing and there
  • 00:09:45
wasn't a lot of kanji because the app
  • 00:09:47
just did not do well with understanding
  • 00:09:50
kanji it will tell you like it'll give
  • 00:09:52
you one reading of the kanji but the
  • 00:09:54
story is telling is really supposed to
  • 00:09:55
use the other reading of the kanji
  • 00:09:58
um when you try to do a test I I would
  • 00:10:00
have to test myself on kanji from a
  • 00:10:03
    specific sentence within that sentence
  • 00:10:06
it would be right but then the second I
  • 00:10:08
pressed the word or it tested me on the
  • 00:10:10
    word
  • 00:10:11
it would be the other version
  • 00:10:14
and it would be very confusing and so
  • 00:10:16
when I would have these tests where you
  • 00:10:17
have to figure out like what sound this
  • 00:10:20
word is making or like you would have to
  • 00:10:22
hear you have to listen to the sound
  • 00:10:24
you listen to the word and then you have
  • 00:10:26
to choose the appropriate kanji for that
  • 00:10:28
word it would always throw me off
  • 00:10:30
because the way that I learned that
  • 00:10:31
kanji was with the other reading of the
  • 00:10:33
    word
  • 00:10:34
so that was very very frustrating and
  • 00:10:36
then there was just a lot of areas where
  • 00:10:38
they should have used kanji but they
  • 00:10:39
just chose not to and it just made it
  • 00:10:42
    hard for me
  • 00:10:43
but I will say at the point that link is
  • 00:10:47
now it does way way better in terms of
  • 00:10:50
kanji there's a lot more kanji into many
  • 00:10:52
    stories
  • 00:10:54
um and you get the multiple obviously
  • 00:10:56
you get the multiple readings when you
  • 00:10:58
    save the kanji
  • 00:11:00
um versus if you were just saving the
  • 00:11:01
hiragana if you save the kanji you see
  • 00:11:03
the multiple readings of it and that's
  • 00:11:05
    very helpful when you're studying
  • 00:11:06
because you can see both and you can
  • 00:11:08
study both at the same time so I will
  • 00:11:10
say that it has come a long way in that
  • 00:11:12
and I appreciate that it makes learning
  • 00:11:14
    Japanese better more efficient
  • 00:11:17
    um
  • 00:11:19
my other thing is that the customer
  • 00:11:22
service is very responsive I they always
  • 00:11:24
respond to my emails in a timely manner
  • 00:11:26
it says zorin I'm not sure if it's
  • 00:11:28
actually zorin or not but that's like
  • 00:11:30
the name that's on the emails but they
  • 00:11:33
are very very fast it's I've not had a
  • 00:11:35
situation where I've emailed them and
  • 00:11:36
I've had to follow up because I didn't
  • 00:11:38
    hear anything they're very responsive
  • 00:11:41
um I will say I think that I was a
  • 00:11:43
little upset about the whole coins thing
  • 00:11:45
but the fact that they were still able
  • 00:11:47
    to you know
  • 00:11:48
give my streak back I stay I still think
  • 00:11:51
that was good and you know it took like
  • 00:11:53
so many days between those emails he
  • 00:11:55
could have came back and been like no
  • 00:11:56
you don't get a streak what are you
  • 00:11:58
talking about like in other companies
  • 00:11:59
but he was like yep here's your streak
  • 00:12:01
back so very very responsive in terms of
  • 00:12:05
    customer service when you're having
  • 00:12:06
issues okay that was all my Pros
  • 00:12:09
    um
  • 00:12:10
    so cons
  • 00:12:12
is one of the first cons I put is that
  • 00:12:16
    it's just not fun
  • 00:12:18
it's just not fun like I don't enjoy
  • 00:12:23
    using the app
  • 00:12:26
either on my phone or on the desktop
  • 00:12:28
there's no version of it for me that is
  • 00:12:30
    fun to use
  • 00:12:31
um for a good comparison I am almost at
  • 00:12:34
900 day streak on Duolingo and I know we
  • 00:12:38
got a lot to say about Duolingo in terms
  • 00:12:40
of Japanese yes it is not that good
  • 00:12:43
um but I've been using it for Spanish
  • 00:12:44
and it's been very very helpful for me
  • 00:12:46
and I've been learning a lot
  • 00:12:48
um and it's very gamified right it feels
  • 00:12:50
good to go and get that streak
  • 00:12:53
um link doesn't link is not fun
  • 00:12:56
    um
  • 00:12:58
    I don't I don't feel like opening up the
  • 00:13:00
app uh to do anything I don't feel
  • 00:13:03
incentivized to you know go through the
  • 00:13:07
    flash cards
  • 00:13:08
um or anything like that I just I feel
  • 00:13:10
like I had to force myself to open the
  • 00:13:12
app all the time I felt like I even
  • 00:13:14
gotten to a point where I was only using
  • 00:13:17
    link
  • 00:13:19
    because
  • 00:13:20
I was trying to keep my streak in
  • 00:13:22
Duolingo I was trying to keep my streak
  • 00:13:23
in link but instead of actually spending
  • 00:13:25
the time and link to study things I
  • 00:13:27
    would just like play
  • 00:13:30
a podcast or something through it and
  • 00:13:33
get my coins that way and and that's
  • 00:13:35
another thing about the coins being
  • 00:13:36
    inconsistent
  • 00:13:37
    um
  • 00:13:38
I'm gonna get to that point anyway I'm
  • 00:13:39
gonna get to point in a second but yeah
  • 00:13:42
like Steve talks about a lot like how
  • 00:13:43
language learning should be fun but the
  • 00:13:45
    app itself is not fun
  • 00:13:47
and it's just it's nothing motivating me
  • 00:13:50
to want to open that app since I've
  • 00:13:52
decided to stop using it after I lost my
  • 00:13:54
streak last I thought to myself because
  • 00:13:56
    I paid for a year
  • 00:13:58
so I have it until March I thought okay
  • 00:14:01
well now that I know that it's about to
  • 00:14:03
go it's not going to renew maybe I'll
  • 00:14:05
feel incentivized to go back into the
  • 00:14:06
app I went back to the app and I
  • 00:14:08
immediately posted out I was like I
  • 00:14:09
    don't feel like it
  • 00:14:11
and it's not that I don't feel like
  • 00:14:12
studying the language I do a lot of
  • 00:14:14
things in Japanese I watch movies I
  • 00:14:16
    watch
  • 00:14:17
um I have my VPN set to Japan so I get a
  • 00:14:19
lot of Japanese commercials I talk to
  • 00:14:21
Japanese people I listen to Japanese
  • 00:14:23
    music
  • 00:14:25
um I have a Japanese TV app that I watch
  • 00:14:27
TV on with no subtitles with all the
  • 00:14:29
stuff I watch has no subtitles but
  • 00:14:32
I do a lot of stuff in Japanese it's not
  • 00:14:34
that I'm not motivated to learn a
  • 00:14:36
language anymore it's just that this app
  • 00:14:37
    is not fun
  • 00:14:39
    um
  • 00:14:39
    the other thing is the
  • 00:14:41
the UI is buggy is very buggy
  • 00:14:45
um it's hard to know like what's going
  • 00:14:46
on like I mentioned like there was
  • 00:14:48
glitches that would make it seem like I
  • 00:14:50
met my goal for the day and then the
  • 00:14:53
next day find out that I didn't have a I
  • 00:14:54
didn't meet my streak I would get
  • 00:14:56
    notifications that were inconsistent and
  • 00:14:58
I had to complain about this a couple
  • 00:14:59
    times to customer service because
  • 00:15:02
I had it set up to where I would receive
  • 00:15:04
notifications reminding me to go in and
  • 00:15:07
like study Japanese and get my streak
  • 00:15:09
and those notifications would never come
  • 00:15:11
and we have to fix that I had issues
  • 00:15:15
where I would get notifications on my
  • 00:15:17
phone that were just lines of code
  • 00:15:20
    and not actual messages
  • 00:15:23
and that was really weird I didn't know
  • 00:15:25
what had broken but it was a consistent
  • 00:15:27
thing it wasn't like just this happened
  • 00:15:29
this month it was a consistent thing
  • 00:15:30
that happened over months I would just
  • 00:15:32
    randomly get notifications from link
  • 00:15:34
that were broken lines of code another
  • 00:15:35
thing that I would get issues with would
  • 00:15:37
    be
  • 00:15:38
when I'm listening to a podcast through
  • 00:15:40
link and I would pause it or it would
  • 00:15:43
end on its own like it'll run out of
  • 00:15:44
time and the app would not let me remove
  • 00:15:48
the notification like I would have to
  • 00:15:50
hard reset my entire my heart reset I
  • 00:15:53
have to reset my phone in order to make
  • 00:15:55
the notification go away no amount of
  • 00:15:57
opening and closing the app or trying to
  • 00:15:58
like force stop the app could help
  • 00:16:01
or stop it from doing that like I had to
  • 00:16:05
reset my phone and then come back to try
  • 00:16:07
and get it out of my thing
  • 00:16:09
um and it was frustrating because it'll
  • 00:16:11
be it'll look like I'm like supposed to
  • 00:16:12
be listening to something and nothing's
  • 00:16:14
    playing
  • 00:16:16
like the link player would just be there
  • 00:16:19
and it wouldn't go away and it was very
  • 00:16:21
    frustrating
  • 00:16:23
um another part about the UI being buggy
  • 00:16:25
that I mentioned earlier was the first
  • 00:16:27
time it was like you can't repair your
  • 00:16:29
streak you don't have enough coins your
  • 00:16:31
your streak is done when I went on to
  • 00:16:34
the desktop version of Link suddenly I
  • 00:16:36
    had enough coins
  • 00:16:38
to repair my streak why why is there a
  • 00:16:41
    difference there I don't understand
  • 00:16:44
    um
  • 00:16:46
    another thing
  • 00:16:48
no wait is it 500 coins is 5 000 coins
  • 00:16:53
    oh hold on
  • 00:16:56
I'm trying to look on the link website
  • 00:16:57
and it's taking forever to load
  • 00:17:00
um I just see people recording errors
  • 00:17:04
why did the link app open I don't want
  • 00:17:06
the link app to open okay so let me
  • 00:17:09
rephrase this because I was looking at
  • 00:17:12
    my thing
  • 00:17:13
    and it's not 500 coins you need 5 000
  • 00:17:19
coins to repair your streak so if you're
  • 00:17:22
    doing 50 if you're getting 50 coins a
  • 00:17:25
    day at the lowest amount
  • 00:17:27
5 000 divided by 50 you have to meet
  • 00:17:30
your streak for 100 days yeah that makes
  • 00:17:31
sense of what I was saying earlier but
  • 00:17:32
it's actually five thousand my bad
  • 00:17:34
    that's a lot of [ __ ] coins
  • 00:17:36
to have to get to repair your streak for
  • 00:17:39
    one day
  • 00:17:40
one day and it's not something that's
  • 00:17:43
breeding me to be like that's it's not
  • 00:17:45
priming me to be like oh I have to be
  • 00:17:47
very consistent and I have to stay on it
  • 00:17:49
because if I don't I'm gonna have this
  • 00:17:51
huge punishment it just feels more like
  • 00:17:53
    a punishment for no reason
  • 00:17:56
like it feels like when you get in
  • 00:17:59
trouble and your parent whoops you
  • 00:18:02
was it really proportional to what you
  • 00:18:04
did or no you can't really say that at
  • 00:18:07
this point like oh my God I spilled some
  • 00:18:09
mustard and I got a whooping now it's
  • 00:18:10
all the same it just doesn't feel like
  • 00:18:12
motivating to get something that is that
  • 00:18:16
that's high like I can understand if it
  • 00:18:20
was 500 maybe even 500 would be like
  • 00:18:23
what 10 days to get one day that makes a
  • 00:18:26
lot more sense to me than 5 000. that's
  • 00:18:30
    so many coins
  • 00:18:32
um that you have to either pay money to
  • 00:18:34
get or you have to spend time on the app
  • 00:18:36
to get yep so looking back at the amount
  • 00:18:39
of coins that I gathered just from like
  • 00:18:41
using the app for years consistently
  • 00:18:43
    like I said I almost got to a 500-day
  • 00:18:44
streak so I was getting a lot of coins
  • 00:18:46
    and I wasn't limiting it to 50. I was
  • 00:18:48
    going 100 200 whatever
  • 00:18:50
    I lost like 20 000 coins
  • 00:18:54
having to repair streaks now sometimes
  • 00:18:58
it was my fault sometimes I forgot one
  • 00:19:00
day and then I had to repair the streak
  • 00:19:01
I and I'll take responsibility but there
  • 00:19:03
were several times where the only reason
  • 00:19:05
I lost my streak was because the app
  • 00:19:07
glitched and it told me that I had met
  • 00:19:10
my daily goal I had the little the
  • 00:19:12
little fire thing on there and it was
  • 00:19:14
like you got it you did it you met your
  • 00:19:16
goal and then I come in the next day and
  • 00:19:18
it was like actually you only had 45
  • 00:19:19
    coins
  • 00:19:21
    Street gone
  • 00:19:27
and it's not like I knew anywhere that I
  • 00:19:29
could just go and complain and get them
  • 00:19:31
to repair the street like no I
  • 00:19:32
    consistently went through
  • 00:19:35
thousands of coins every single time
  • 00:19:37
until I got to the point where there
  • 00:19:39
were no more coins to spin before I
  • 00:19:41
decided to complain and say this is a
  • 00:19:44
issue in your app and it wasn't a we're
  • 00:19:47
aware of the issue and we're fixing it
  • 00:19:48
it was more so we can't give you your
  • 00:19:49
coins back but um next time you lose
  • 00:19:52
your streak we'll give you the streak
  • 00:19:53
    back so
  • 00:19:55
I was not very happy about that
  • 00:19:58
it took me a very long time like I could
  • 00:20:01
never find out how to actually see the
  • 00:20:03
amount of coins that I had at a given
  • 00:20:05
time I was on a desktop I was on the
  • 00:20:07
phone I was reading the forums and what
  • 00:20:10
link was guiding me to do to see how
  • 00:20:12
many coins I had did not work now I
  • 00:20:15
could see how many coins I've gotten
  • 00:20:16
    over the period
  • 00:20:18
like over the year the three years that
  • 00:20:21
I was on the app I could see how many
  • 00:20:22
coins I've earned but I could not see
  • 00:20:24
how many coins I had because at this
  • 00:20:26
point I spent 20 000 coins I had no idea
  • 00:20:30
how many coins I actually had left
  • 00:20:32
and if I could afford to even miss
  • 00:20:34
another day because what they were
  • 00:20:36
telling me to do to view how many coins
  • 00:20:38
I had I could never find it to this day
  • 00:20:41
I've not been able to go into Link's
  • 00:20:44
website and see how many coins I have to
  • 00:20:47
spend on anything I just know that I
  • 00:20:50
have coins Somewhere Out There In The
  • 00:20:52
    Ether
  • 00:20:53
    um well
  • 00:20:54
not anymore I just know I have less than
  • 00:20:56
five thousand coins at this point
  • 00:20:57
because I couldn't repair my streak
  • 00:20:59
um yeah and then that was also a lot of
  • 00:21:02
times where the website would just
  • 00:21:04
glitch out on me even on a desktop so
  • 00:21:06
there'll be times when I'd be like
  • 00:21:08
trying to view the coin the little coin
  • 00:21:10
graph or whatever and it would just
  • 00:21:11
glitch in the page would just never load
  • 00:21:13
and I would try it on multiple different
  • 00:21:16
like I do on my phone I do it on
  • 00:21:17
different browsers the page just went
  • 00:21:18
    load
  • 00:21:20
or the page will load and part of it
  • 00:21:21
wouldn't load like the script on the
  • 00:21:23
    page was like janky somehow
  • 00:21:26
um oh let me drink some water because
  • 00:21:28
    this apartment
  • 00:21:29
    really pissed me off
  • 00:21:32
this part really got me that made me mad
  • 00:21:35
your streak only applies to one language
  • 00:21:38
now when I'm gonna do a lingo
  • 00:21:41
and I don't know it could have changed
  • 00:21:42
in the past several weeks if there was
  • 00:21:44
another update as of this time like it
  • 00:21:46
was the five point it was the most
  • 00:21:48
recent update that Steve had talked
  • 00:21:50
about on his channel but they could have
  • 00:21:52
fixed it but at the time that I could
  • 00:21:55
    not do it anymore
  • 00:21:57
after three years your streak only
  • 00:21:59
applies to one language so when I
  • 00:22:01
decided to start learning Spanish a
  • 00:22:03
couple years ago I could get a streak in
  • 00:22:05
Spanish and I would lose my streak in
  • 00:22:07
Japanese so I had to do Spanish and
  • 00:22:09
Japanese and I know some of you would be
  • 00:22:11
like but don't that motivate you to
  • 00:22:12
    study bro no
  • 00:22:14
    no it don't
  • 00:22:17
people and I'm telling you this because
  • 00:22:18
    like we're I'm a regular person there's
  • 00:22:20
do you know I know there's the polygots
  • 00:22:22
out there those people have a special
  • 00:22:24
    circumstance experience brain that any
  • 00:22:28
of these apps is going to work for them
  • 00:22:29
no matter what a lot of the things about
  • 00:22:31
    these polyglots that
  • 00:22:33
it's not like regular people they know
  • 00:22:35
the exact study method that works for
  • 00:22:37
them they know the exact amount of
  • 00:22:38
motivation that works for them they know
  • 00:22:39
what they need to do in order to learn a
  • 00:22:41
    language because they've done it
  • 00:22:42
multiple times but when you're a regular
  • 00:22:44
    Joe Schmo
  • 00:22:45
and you're trying to learn a language
  • 00:22:47
maybe it's the first second language
  • 00:22:49
that you're trying to learn you don't
  • 00:22:51
know that you don't have those tips so
  • 00:22:52
you're relying on these apps we're
  • 00:22:54
paying money to these apps to help us
  • 00:22:57
get to where we need trying all these
  • 00:22:59
    different types of language learning
  • 00:23:00
methods like you see if you follow Steve
  • 00:23:02
    on YouTube he's interviewed multiple
  • 00:23:04
polyglots and almost all of them have a
  • 00:23:06
different way to say this is the best
  • 00:23:09
way to study a language the almost all
  • 00:23:11
of them disagree about it because they
  • 00:23:12
know what works for them specifically
  • 00:23:15
and what works for them specifically
  • 00:23:17
does not work for everybody it just
  • 00:23:19
works for people who have who are like
  • 00:23:20
them and a lot of people don't
  • 00:23:22
understand that and a lot of these
  • 00:23:24
polyglots don't tell you that but they
  • 00:23:26
just know what's the appropriate study
  • 00:23:27
    method for them
  • 00:23:29
maybe someone with ADHD needs a
  • 00:23:31
    different study method maybe someone
  • 00:23:33
with autism needs a different study
  • 00:23:35
method maybe someone with dyslexia needs
  • 00:23:38
a different study method but a lot of
  • 00:23:40
the polyglots say this is the number one
  • 00:23:42
best way to learn a language that's not
  • 00:23:44
true this way Link's way is is Steve's
  • 00:23:48
way and Steve is already someone who
  • 00:23:51
    speaks multiple languages he didn't
  • 00:23:53
learn his first second language from
  • 00:23:56
link he created Link at a later date
  • 00:23:58
following the things that he found has
  • 00:24:00
been helpful for him which is reading a
  • 00:24:02
bunch of books in the language and don't
  • 00:24:04
get me wrong I also love reading a bunch
  • 00:24:06
of books in the language and I feel like
  • 00:24:08
link had a lot of things that were
  • 00:24:10
promising about it but there's just so
  • 00:24:12
    many things
  • 00:24:14
about the app itself that makes this not
  • 00:24:18
    work for me
  • 00:24:20
and if it works for you that's great it
  • 00:24:22
worked for me at a time
  • 00:24:24
where I was in I was trying to take a
  • 00:24:26
class and I was about to go to Japan and
  • 00:24:29
I was trying my best to get as much in
  • 00:24:31
my brain as possible in that moment it
  • 00:24:34
worked in that moment and that's why I
  • 00:24:35
was always telling people that this is a
  • 00:24:37
    great app to use
  • 00:24:39
um but it's not working anymore outside
  • 00:24:42
of that moment it's not been working and
  • 00:24:43
it's been a struggle with me to use the
  • 00:24:46
    app
  • 00:24:47
um especially when I'm trying to get
  • 00:24:49
some type of satisfaction from using the
  • 00:24:51
app and I just went and I just put in
  • 00:24:53
you know I just did several mini stories
  • 00:24:55
in Spanish my brains all primed for
  • 00:24:58
Spanish I'm feeling good I'm about to go
  • 00:25:00
watch a Spanish TV show and then I
  • 00:25:02
realized that I need to go do Japanese
  • 00:25:05
now or I'm gonna lose my streak before
  • 00:25:07
the end of the day and I don't switch my
  • 00:25:09
brain up this is why sometimes I have
  • 00:25:10
    confusion
  • 00:25:12
um in my brain I have a Japanese
  • 00:25:15
sentence that has Spanish words mixed
  • 00:25:17
    into it
  • 00:25:18
like I don't like to learn them at the
  • 00:25:20
same time I want to spend you know a
  • 00:25:23
couple days here doing Spanish a couple
  • 00:25:25
days they're doing Japanese and flip
  • 00:25:26
flop I don't want to have to do them at
  • 00:25:28
the same time every day and no it's not
  • 00:25:30
the same as doing one in the morning one
  • 00:25:31
in the evening it's still not
  • 00:25:33
    it's not working for me
  • 00:25:36
    um
  • 00:25:38
trying to get a streak you're just going
  • 00:25:40
to be disappointed every time because
  • 00:25:41
there's so many things that go against
  • 00:25:43
    you
  • 00:25:44
    um
  • 00:25:45
yeah after I'd spend spent time doing
  • 00:25:48
Japanese I would not feel the motivation
  • 00:25:49
to go and do Spanish and vice versa
  • 00:25:52
    um another thing that I
  • 00:25:54
    struggled with was
  • 00:25:57
it made me feel like I had to choose
  • 00:25:59
between them because I just could not do
  • 00:26:00
both and I wanted to continue to have a
  • 00:26:03
    streak in Japanese overall because
  • 00:26:04
that's the big main language that I'm
  • 00:26:07
trying to learn in Spanish is like a
  • 00:26:08
    side thing but
  • 00:26:10
I couldn't do both at the same time
  • 00:26:11
that's not how I learned that's not how
  • 00:26:13
my brain works so it became very very
  • 00:26:15
frustrating and I had to spend a period
  • 00:26:17
where I completely ignored the Japanese
  • 00:26:19
side of the app to learn Spanish for my
  • 00:26:21
trip to Mexico and I didn't feel like
  • 00:26:23
that was fair because I felt like when I
  • 00:26:27
left spanish to go check on Japanese I
  • 00:26:29
was starting over again every single
  • 00:26:30
    time
  • 00:26:32
um and it's just demoralizing and
  • 00:26:34
    demotivating
  • 00:26:36
so in terms of the content now the
  • 00:26:39
    content
  • 00:26:41
    um
  • 00:26:42
    I will say
  • 00:26:44
it works very well with YouTube videos
  • 00:26:46
as long as the YouTube videos have
  • 00:26:48
accurate subtitles so if you have a
  • 00:26:50
    YouTube video and they did
  • 00:26:51
auto-generated captions that may not be
  • 00:26:53
very accurate and you may not want to
  • 00:26:55
pull that I tend to watch Japanese and
  • 00:26:58
Spanish videos that don't have subtitles
  • 00:27:00
    available
  • 00:27:01
um and I'm just cool with that because
  • 00:27:03
you don't always need to study every
  • 00:27:05
single video you watch you could just
  • 00:27:07
watch a video because you enjoy the
  • 00:27:09
content without having to download it
  • 00:27:10
and study what the people are saying
  • 00:27:12
because you know you'll pick it up
  • 00:27:13
    eventually
  • 00:27:15
    um
  • 00:27:16
and so the subtitles have to be accurate
  • 00:27:19
Netflix Netflix don't work right Netflix
  • 00:27:22
used to work right because in the past I
  • 00:27:25
could go to someone else's like playlist
  • 00:27:27
and I could like download whatever
  • 00:27:29
Netflix video that they had already
  • 00:27:31
downloaded because they had already went
  • 00:27:32
through the effort of paying for Netflix
  • 00:27:34
    going into Netflix downloading the
  • 00:27:36
transcript aka the captions you some
  • 00:27:39
some of them are auto-generated a lot of
  • 00:27:41
a lot of Japanese movies that don't have
  • 00:27:44
    English subtitles will have
  • 00:27:46
    auto-generated Japanese subtitles so
  • 00:27:48
it's still not the best but they would
  • 00:27:49
go through the work of downloading that
  • 00:27:51
importing it into link and I could go
  • 00:27:53
and I could download that and I could
  • 00:27:55
take it with me so in the past I've
  • 00:27:57
    downloaded some Japanese movies I've
  • 00:27:59
downloaded the Spanish version of of J
  • 00:28:01
of the Jason movies of Friday the 13th
  • 00:28:03
    movies and we was Gucci
  • 00:28:07
I didn't have to pay for Netflix because
  • 00:28:08
I couldn't afford Netflix at the time
  • 00:28:12
I don't know when it changed but now I
  • 00:28:15
    can't like download people's playlists
  • 00:28:17
like it doesn't allow me to do it it
  • 00:28:19
looks like you can do it but it never
  • 00:28:21
    works what
  • 00:28:22
um whether I'm on my phone or I'm on the
  • 00:28:25
desktop it just never works to download
  • 00:28:26
    someone else's transcript now
  • 00:28:29
and I just I don't know why but in order
  • 00:28:33
for me to make it work I literally would
  • 00:28:35
have to go and pay Netflix which I ended
  • 00:28:38
up doing I went to pay Netflix to go
  • 00:28:41
into the captions of these things and
  • 00:28:43
pull them myself over the link and then
  • 00:28:44
I could use them but whenever I would
  • 00:28:47
save someone else's playlist and try to
  • 00:28:49
open it to study it it would not open
  • 00:28:51
anything for me it'd be blank
  • 00:28:53
and that was very very frustrating and I
  • 00:28:56
don't know if that was because maybe
  • 00:28:58
Netflix came after them or something or
  • 00:29:01
maybe it just they decided they didn't
  • 00:29:03
want that to be able to happen anymore
  • 00:29:05
but when you are downloading someone
  • 00:29:08
like if someone did like a YouTube video
  • 00:29:10
you know free content it works just fine
  • 00:29:13
but with Netflix videos it no longer
  • 00:29:14
works and I don't know why
  • 00:29:19
and even if you go about doing all of
  • 00:29:22
that and paying Netflix to get those
  • 00:29:24
transcripts you're still going to run
  • 00:29:25
into issue of like these movies that you
  • 00:29:27
    want to get transcript of
  • 00:29:29
a lot of them had Auto generated
  • 00:29:31
    captions
  • 00:29:33
so it's kind of frustrating that I no
  • 00:29:37
longer could do that I don't know what
  • 00:29:39
happened that I could no longer do it
  • 00:29:40
but I just can't do it anymore and
  • 00:29:42
    that's uh disappointing because there's
  • 00:29:44
a lot of great content on Netflix
  • 00:29:47
um in terms of Japanese content
  • 00:29:52
    foreign
