タイムライン

  • 00:00:00 - 00:05:00

The speaker emphasizes the disconnect between important societal issues and the discussions in Washington, particularly highlighting the corrupt campaign finance system that allows billionaires to exert undue influence over politics. They argue that this undermines democracy, as seen in the case of billionaires like Elon Musk who can contribute vast sums to political campaigns, thus skewing the political landscape in favor of the wealthy.

  • 00:05:00 - 00:10:00

The speaker discusses the consequences of recent legislation passed by Republicans, which they describe as a massive transfer of wealth from the working class to the top 1%. This legislation is expected to result in millions losing health insurance and thousands dying unnecessarily due to lack of access to healthcare. They criticize Republican lawmakers for voting in favor of such measures, knowing the detrimental impact on their constituents, and highlight the fear of losing support from wealthy donors as a driving factor behind their decisions.

  • 00:10:00 - 00:16:01

The speaker points out that the corrupt campaign finance system affects both parties, with Democrats also being influenced by billionaire donations. They provide examples of how this has led to a lack of support for progressive candidates and policies. The speaker calls for action to combat the influence of super PACs and the Citizens United decision, urging collective action to restore democracy and ensure that government represents the interests of the majority rather than the wealthy elite.

  • 00:00:00
Hey everybody, thanks very much for
  • 00:00:02
    joining.
  • 00:00:04
    Generally speaking, the more important
  • 00:00:07
the issue is, the less it is discussed
  • 00:00:11
here in Washington DC. We talk about a
  • 00:00:15
whole lot of things, but most often stay
  • 00:00:18
away from the real issues that impact
  • 00:00:20
people's lives and impact our entire
  • 00:00:24
society. Let me give you just one
  • 00:00:26
    example
  • 00:00:28
    today.
  • 00:00:30
We are living under a corrupt campaign
  • 00:00:34
finance system which is undermining our
  • 00:00:38
    democracy
  • 00:00:40
and it allows billionaires to control
  • 00:00:43
not only our political system but our
  • 00:00:45
    legislative process. That's it. Bottom
  • 00:00:48
line. You think you live in a democracy?
  • 00:00:50
Well, yeah. You get one vote. Elon Musk
  • 00:00:54
gets one vote. But he also has the
  • 00:00:57
    ability to put $290
  • 00:00:59
million into a campaign to allow Donald
  • 00:01:03
Trump to become elected president. That
  • 00:01:06
sound like a democracy to you? Not to
  • 00:01:08
me. And increasingly what we are seeing
  • 00:01:11
now as a result of Citizens United and
  • 00:01:14
the growth of super PACs are not
  • 00:01:17
    candidates debating issues. That's
  • 00:01:19
democracy. You disagree with me, that's
  • 00:01:21
fine. Let's have a debate. But what you
  • 00:01:24
are seeing is competing 302 ads that are
  • 00:01:29
    funded by billionaire controlled super
  • 00:01:32
PACs. So when you watch TV, you're on
  • 00:01:35
the internet, you see some group saying
  • 00:01:37
citizens for this, citizens for that. In
  • 00:01:40
    most cases, those are organizations
  • 00:01:44
    that are funded by billionaires
  • 00:01:48
that are spending all kinds of money
  • 00:01:50
trying to defeat somebody or trying to
  • 00:01:53
elect somebody. And a lot of this began
  • 00:01:57
with this horrific uh Supreme Court
  • 00:01:59
decision in 2010. And by a five to four
  • 00:02:03
    decision, the Supreme Court decided
  • 00:02:07
that we are infringing on the free
  • 00:02:11
speech of billionaires if we just don't
  • 00:02:14
allow them to spend as much money as
  • 00:02:16
    they want to destroy democracy.
  • 00:02:19
So that's basically what the Citizens
  • 00:02:21
United Supreme Court decision was about.
  • 00:02:25
So what's happened since then is that we
  • 00:02:28
have seen political spending going up by
  • 00:02:31
    more than 1600%.
  • 00:02:36
    In the 2024 elections,
  • 00:02:39
100 billionaire families on both sides
  • 00:02:42
of the aisle spent $2.6 billion. You got
  • 00:02:46
    that? A 100 families spent $2.6 billion.
  • 00:02:51
that was double double what they spent
  • 00:02:54
in 2020 and I ex have every reason to
  • 00:02:57
believe that that is going to go up and
  • 00:02:59
up and up. So you're going to contribute
  • 00:03:01
20 bucks which we desperately need. We
  • 00:03:03
appreciate and that is vitally important
  • 00:03:06
to maintaining our democracy and Elon
  • 00:03:08
Musk is not going to contribute 20
  • 00:03:10
bucks. He's going to contribute $290
  • 00:03:13
million maybe more in the future. Who
  • 00:03:15
    knows? So
  • 00:03:18
what does this tell you about our
  • 00:03:20
political system? It tells you that if
  • 00:03:22
you contribute like Musk $290 million,
  • 00:03:26
you become appointed by Donald Trump to
  • 00:03:28
be the most important person in the
  • 00:03:32
    United States government. You become
  • 00:03:34
head of Doge and you now can implement
  • 00:03:38
    your extreme right-wing ideology, break
  • 00:03:41
unions, throw tens of thousands of
  • 00:03:43
federal employees out on the street, cut
  • 00:03:46
    back on Social Security employees,
  • 00:03:48
    employees at the Veterans
  • 00:03:50
    Administration, and lay the groundwork,
  • 00:03:52
by the way, for the privatization of
  • 00:03:54
    major government agencies. That's what
  • 00:03:56
    you get when you contribute
  • 00:03:59
$290 million. But it is not just Elon
  • 00:04:03
    Musk.
  • 00:04:05
Uh in early July, uh just a few days
  • 00:04:09
ago, uh Republicans in Congress passed,
  • 00:04:13
as you all know, I hope you know,
  • 00:04:15
Trump's big, beautiful bill, which in my
  • 00:04:18
view, is probably the most destructive
  • 00:04:20
piece of legislation uh passed in the
  • 00:04:23
modern history of our country. And this
  • 00:04:26
    legislation provides a trillion dollars
  • 00:04:28
in tax breaks to the top 1%. So all
  • 00:04:31
    these guys who made campaign
  • 00:04:33
contributions, they're going to get it
  • 00:04:37
back in spades. You know, you contribute
  • 00:04:39
a few hundred million or $10 million,
  • 00:04:42
you're going to get that back big time
  • 00:04:44
in a tax break. Massive tax breaks for
  • 00:04:47
    large profitable corporations. And it's
  • 00:04:49
all paid for by cuts to Medicaid,
  • 00:04:52
nutrition, and education. In fact, some
  • 00:04:55
have suggested that this is the largest
  • 00:04:57
transfer of wealth from the working
  • 00:04:59
class to the top 1% uh in the history of
  • 00:05:02
our country. Further, as a result of
  • 00:05:05
    this legislation, over 16 million
  • 00:05:08
Americans are going to lose their health
  • 00:05:10
insurance and sadly, and you know, just
  • 00:05:13
hurts me to have to say this, but
  • 00:05:14
    studies suggest that some 50,000
  • 00:05:17
    Americans will die unnecessarily every
  • 00:05:19
year because when you're thrown off
  • 00:05:21
health care, you don't have access to a
  • 00:05:23
    doctor and so forth.
  • 00:05:24
Now, the point that I want to make is I
  • 00:05:26
don't want to go into this bill
  • 00:05:28
uh at this time, but I want you to think
  • 00:05:31
about something. Think about how every
  • 00:05:35
single Republican member of the House
  • 00:05:37
    and Senate,
  • 00:05:39
almost everyone, there were a few
  • 00:05:40
    exceptions, voted for this horrific
  • 00:05:43
bill. Okay? Virtually every member of
  • 00:05:46
the Republican member of the Senate,
  • 00:05:49
Republican members of the House. Now, do
  • 00:05:51
you think, and I know these people, do
  • 00:05:54
you think that they don't know about the
  • 00:05:57
impact that these massive cuts to
  • 00:05:59
Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act and
  • 00:06:02
education and nutrition are going to
  • 00:06:04
have on their constituents? You think
  • 00:06:06
they don't know that? And many of their
  • 00:06:08
constituents, by the way, are working
  • 00:06:09
    class and poor.
  • 00:06:11
The answer is they do know it. They're
  • 00:06:13
not stupid. They know exactly what
  • 00:06:15
they're doing. But they also know
  • 00:06:19
that if one day they were to have stood
  • 00:06:23
up and said, "You know what? I represent
  • 00:06:27
the district. It's working class. It's
  • 00:06:28
poor. A lot of people on Medicaid, kids
  • 00:06:30
trying to go to college. I can't vote
  • 00:06:32
for this thing." What do you think would
  • 00:06:35
have happened to them the very next day?
  • 00:06:39
And what would have happened is one or
  • 00:06:41
another of the oligarchs or the big
  • 00:06:44
money interests would have said, "You're
  • 00:06:46
not voting for Trump's bill. You are out
  • 00:06:48
of here. We are going to primary you."
  • 00:06:53
And I'll give you an example of that. Uh
  • 00:06:56
there's a guy named Tom Tillis who is a
  • 00:06:59
US senator uh from uh North Carolina. I
  • 00:07:03
don't know Tillis all that well, but you
  • 00:07:05
know, he represents his state. uh seems
  • 00:07:08
like a you know normal type Republican,
  • 00:07:10
but he made a mistake. He actually
  • 00:07:13
studied what was in the bill and it
  • 00:07:16
turns out that it would cause that
  • 00:07:19
    legislation would cause over 650,000
  • 00:07:22
people in North Carolina to lose their
  • 00:07:25
health insurance. And having a sense of
  • 00:07:28
decency, uh he said, "You know what?
  • 00:07:31
    That's unacceptable. I represent the
  • 00:07:33
state of North Carolina. I can't vote to
  • 00:07:35
throw 650,000 people off the hill and
  • 00:07:38
turn out. Well, you know what happened?
  • 00:07:41
    The day after
  • 00:07:43
he made that public statement that he
  • 00:07:45
was not going to vote for this bill,
  • 00:07:47
    Donald Trump issued a ruthless
  • 00:07:50
denunciation of him and threatened to
  • 00:07:53
primary him. You, Tom Tillis, Senator
  • 00:07:57
Tillis, you're voting against me. You
  • 00:07:59
are out of here. And you know what
  • 00:08:01
happened? A few hours a few hours after
  • 00:08:04
Trump issued a statement, Tom Tillis
  • 00:08:07
announced, "I am not running for
  • 00:08:10
reelection to the United States Senate."
  • 00:08:13
    He stood up, represented his
  • 00:08:15
    constituents, and the billionaire class
  • 00:08:17
said, "That ain't the way it works. We
  • 00:08:19
pay you to do what we want. You don't do
  • 00:08:22
it, you are out of here."
  • 00:08:26
But it was not just the big beautiful
  • 00:08:29
bill, Trump's big beautiful bill. Uh we
  • 00:08:31
saw that uh in December of 24
  • 00:08:36
uh in what was called the uh comm CR
  • 00:08:40
continuing resolution here where we had
  • 00:08:45
worked I had was actually my and my
  • 00:08:47
staff were really much involved in this
  • 00:08:49
working on a continuing resolution to
  • 00:08:52
make sure that the government didn't
  • 00:08:53
shut down and you know frankly it was
  • 00:08:56
not the world's greatest bill it wasn't.
  • 00:08:58
    We were working with conservative
  • 00:08:59
Republicans, but that bill would have
  • 00:09:04
    put funding, increased funding into
  • 00:09:07
primary health care, into dental care,
  • 00:09:10
the mental health care needs, into
  • 00:09:12
nutrition programs for the elderly, and
  • 00:09:14
    apprentichip apprenticeship programs for
  • 00:09:17
young people. In other words, it was a
  • 00:09:19
reasonably good piece of work. It took
  • 00:09:22
    months of negotiating Democrats,
  • 00:09:24
Republicans. We were involved in that
  • 00:09:26
stuff. That bill was all set to be
  • 00:09:30
passed. And then you know what happened?
  • 00:09:33
Just as the Congress was set to pass
  • 00:09:36
that appropriations bill, Elon Musk sent
  • 00:09:40
out a series of tweets. And what he said
  • 00:09:44
is, "You vote for that continue." And he
  • 00:09:46
lied about what was in the bill. You
  • 00:09:49
you're going to vote for that continuing
  • 00:09:50
resolution. We're going to primary you.
  • 00:09:52
You're out of there. And in minutes,
  • 00:09:56
legislation that had been worked on for
  • 00:09:58
    months, Democrats, Republicans,
  • 00:10:00
    progressives, conservatives came
  • 00:10:02
together. All that Musk had to do was
  • 00:10:05
send out that series of emails. It was
  • 00:10:07
    over. That's it. Republicans said,
  • 00:10:09
"Forget it. We're not supporting that
  • 00:10:11
    anymore."
  • 00:10:12
But it is not just Musk
  • 00:10:15
and it is not just Republicans. This
  • 00:10:17
    system, political system, campaign
  • 00:10:20
    finance system is just unbelievably
  • 00:10:23
corrupt and it impacts the Democratic
  • 00:10:26
party as well. Let me give you a few
  • 00:10:27
examples of how big money and a corrupt
  • 00:10:30
    campaign finance system impacts
  • 00:10:32
    Democrats.
  • 00:10:35
    While outspent by Republicans,
  • 00:10:38
    over 80 Democratic billionaires, 80
  • 00:10:41
    Democratic billionaires donated tens and
  • 00:10:44
tens and tens of millions of dollars to
  • 00:10:47
help elect Kla Harris to be president of
  • 00:10:49
the United States. I personally, many of
  • 00:10:52
you know, worked very hard trying to get
  • 00:10:54
her elected. But what ended up happening
  • 00:10:57
is all of that money from all of these
  • 00:10:59
    billionaires heavily influenced her
  • 00:11:02
campaign. So instead of running a
  • 00:11:04
campaign that took on powerful special
  • 00:11:08
interests and made it clear that she and
  • 00:11:11
the Democratic party were going to stand
  • 00:11:13
with a working class which is struggling
  • 00:11:15
terribly right now instead of saying I
  • 00:11:18
am with you. We're going to take on
  • 00:11:20
these billionaires. She ran a campaign
  • 00:11:22
designed not to antagonize the business
  • 00:11:25
community or the oligarchs. In fact, as
  • 00:11:28
some of you may recall, one of her main
  • 00:11:29
    spokespersons was the billionaire Mark
  • 00:11:32
    Kubin Cuban.
  • 00:11:35
    Billionaire influence on Democrats goes
  • 00:11:37
well beyond campaigns. And I'll tell you
  • 00:11:39
another issue where it is very, very
  • 00:11:43
impactful. If tomorrow a Democrat would
  • 00:11:48
simply say, you know what, I can't
  • 00:11:49
    continue to fund this Netanyao
  • 00:11:50
    government. They're starving children
  • 00:11:52
    right now. Humanitarian blockade. Netao
  • 00:11:55
is a war criminal. You know what would
  • 00:11:57
    happen to that candidate?
  • 00:12:00
Apac and other super PACs would say,
  • 00:12:03
"You're finished. You're out of here."
  • 00:12:05
Just like Musk is saying to the
  • 00:12:07
    Republicans.
  • 00:12:09
And they have a track record. So, it's
  • 00:12:11
not an idol threat. they have already
  • 00:12:12
defeated, you know, some very good
  • 00:12:15
Democrats, people like Corey Bush, Jamal
  • 00:12:18
Bowman, uh, and other candidates who had
  • 00:12:21
the courage to say, you know what, I'm
  • 00:12:22
not going to support more military aid
  • 00:12:24
to continue the war in Gaza. So what you
  • 00:12:27
    have right now
  • 00:12:30
is a political system in which both
  • 00:12:34
    parties are heavily dominated by
  • 00:12:38
    oligarchs and billionaire funded super
  • 00:12:42
    PACs.
  • 00:12:43
And it is also playing out as we speak
  • 00:12:47
right now in New York City
  • 00:12:50
    where Mr. Mandadi
  • 00:12:53
pulled off a major upset, some of you
  • 00:12:55
may know, and defeated Andrew Cuomo, who
  • 00:12:57
was the heavy favorite to win because
  • 00:12:59
    Mandavi, Sauron Mandabi, talked about
  • 00:13:03
    issues of relevance to workingclass
  • 00:13:05
    people
  • 00:13:07
and the city responded to him and he won
  • 00:13:09
    the election.
  • 00:13:11
He won the Democratic primary and
  • 00:13:13
there's going to be a general election
  • 00:13:14
    come November.
  • 00:13:16
And you know what's going on right now
  • 00:13:18
as we speak openly? I mean they don't
  • 00:13:19
apologize for it. The richest people in
  • 00:13:23
New York City are saying we are prepared
  • 00:13:26
to spend hundreds of millions of dollars
  • 00:13:30
    to defeat Mamami.
  • 00:13:34
That's it. That's your democracy. People
  • 00:13:37
    spoke. Democrats selected a candidate
  • 00:13:41
and the billionaires are unhappy with
  • 00:13:42
that. Actually in fact one billionaire
  • 00:13:44
just the other day said it publicly. not
  • 00:13:47
afraid, not embarrassed by it. He said,
  • 00:13:49
"I met with Mr. Puo, Mr. Adams, the two
  • 00:13:52
other two Democrats. Cuomo lost. Adams
  • 00:13:56
is running as an independent and uh I
  • 00:13:59
think Adams is a superior candidate. I'm
  • 00:14:00
going to support him right out in the
  • 00:14:01
open. We the billionaire class like this
  • 00:14:04
    candidate."
  • 00:14:06
So, that's kind of where we are right
  • 00:14:08
    now. This is an issue
  • 00:14:11
    of enormous consequence.
  • 00:14:14
It impacts who wins, who loses
  • 00:14:16
    elections, and it impacts our
  • 00:14:19
    legislation.
  • 00:14:20
So, we have got to now stand up, fight
  • 00:14:24
back in every way that we can. Short
  • 00:14:28
term, we got to make sure that Zaran
  • 00:14:31
Mdani becomes the next mayor of New York
  • 00:14:35
City. We got to help in every way we can
  • 00:14:38
    to see that he wins.
  • 00:14:41
medium-term, we got to make sure that
  • 00:14:44
super PACs are not allowed to play a
  • 00:14:47
    role in Democratic primaries
  • 00:14:50
and longer term, we've got to overthrow
  • 00:14:52
    this disastrous Citizens United Supreme
  • 00:14:55
Court decision. So, that's a lot to do.
  • 00:14:58
But if we want to save American
  • 00:15:01
    democracy,
  • 00:15:02
if we want to have a government that in
  • 00:15:04
any way, shape, or form represents
  • 00:15:06
    working people and not just
  • 00:15:07
billionaires, those are the things we've
  • 00:15:10
got to do. So this is a big issue. Not a
  • 00:15:12
whole lot of people are talking about
  • 00:15:14
it, but it is the most significant
  • 00:15:16
political issue that we face. You can't
  • 00:15:19
talk about healthcare. You can't talk
  • 00:15:21
about housing. You can't talk about
  • 00:15:22
education without talking about the role
  • 00:15:25
that super PACs play in allowing
  • 00:15:28
    billionaires to dominate our government.
  • 00:15:30
So a lot to be done. Let's go forward
  • 00:15:33
together because at the end of the day,
  • 00:15:36
yeah, they got the money, they got a lot
  • 00:15:38
of power, but they are just 1%. Last I
  • 00:15:41
heard, 99% is a lot bigger number than
  • 00:15:44
1%. So, let's not let them divide us up.
  • 00:15:47
Let's stand together. Let's take them
  • 00:15:48
    on. Let's beat them. Let's create a
  • 00:15:51
government that works for all, not the
  • 00:15:52
    few. Let's save American democracy.
  • 00:15:54
    Thank you.
