There are thousands of skincare products
  • 00:00:04
available on the market and it feels
  • 00:00:06
overwhelming even to me to shop for
  • 00:00:09
skincare. So in this video, whether
  • 00:00:11
you're new to skincare or you've been
  • 00:00:12
watching our videos for the last 5
  • 00:00:14
years, we're going to talk about the
  • 00:00:16
    only skinincare products that you
  • 00:00:17
actually need. So as board certified
  • 00:00:19
    dermatologists, we have tried thousands
  • 00:00:21
    of over-the-counter products. We have
  • 00:00:22
    access to prescription products, even
  • 00:00:24
    procedures. But what about everything
  • 00:00:26
you have seen? Is it a scam? Is it hype?
  • 00:00:29
Is it the savior for your skin? Well, we
  • 00:00:30
will take a look and let you know. So,
  • 00:00:32
whether you're a skincare expert or
  • 00:00:34
you've never used skincare before, in
  • 00:00:35
this video, we're going to outline
  • 00:00:37
exactly what you need. And then at the
  • 00:00:38
end of the video, we're going to talk
  • 00:00:40
    through specific problems and which
  • 00:00:42
ingredients we would choose to target
  • 00:00:43
those problems. So, everything that you
  • 00:00:45
need to know to declutter your skincare
  • 00:00:47
routine or just begin a skincare
  • 00:00:49
routine. Here we go. I'm in Bangkok,
  • 00:00:51
which is why Dr. Maxfield's not here.
  • 00:00:53
and we interrupt this broadcast to
  • 00:00:57
announce the first ever remedy collab
  • 00:01:00
box. Remedy for dark spots is one of our
  • 00:01:01
    bestselling products and the results
  • 00:01:03
that we've seen over the last year have
  • 00:01:05
    been absolutely incredible. The before
  • 00:01:07
and afters that you submit through
  • 00:01:09
reviews have completely blown my mind.
  • 00:01:11
Plus, the clinical studies which we
  • 00:01:13
continue to do on our product continue
  • 00:01:14
to outperform anything that I've seen in
  • 00:01:17
the past. Now, what I always say when it
  • 00:01:18
comes to dark spots is that it really
  • 00:01:20
needs to be incorporated into a routine.
  • 00:01:22
So to use this product at night, we want
  • 00:01:25
you to cleanse, use remedy for dark
  • 00:01:27
spots, and then moisturize. But what are
  • 00:01:29
you going to do in the morning? I always
  • 00:01:30
say if you're treating dark spots,
  • 00:01:32
whether you're using remedy for dark
  • 00:01:33
    spots, whether you're using prescription
  • 00:01:35
    hydroquinone, whether you're getting a
  • 00:01:38
laser treatment, a chemical peel, you
  • 00:01:40
need to wear sunscreen, preferably a
  • 00:01:42
    tinted sunscreen, especially if you're
  • 00:01:43
someone who's really prone to dark spots
  • 00:01:45
and melasma. So, our first collab box is
  • 00:01:48
the Dark Spot duo, Remedy for Dark Spots
  • 00:01:51
and Ulta MD UV Daily. Now, if you've
  • 00:01:52
been following our channel from the
  • 00:01:53
beginning, you've heard us mention Elta
  • 00:01:56
MD probably over a hundred times. This
  • 00:01:58
is a dermlod brand that started in the
  • 00:02:01
derm offices. They do tons of clinical
  • 00:02:02
studies on their product and they really
  • 00:02:04
have a high standard similar to remedy.
  • 00:02:05
So, there's really no better collab in
  • 00:02:08
my mind than two really dermlod brands.
  • 00:02:09
Now, many of you have been requesting a
  • 00:02:11
remedy sunscreen, but that's not quite
  • 00:02:13
ready yet. to develop something amazing
  • 00:02:15
is going to take several years and so we
  • 00:02:17
decided to team up with the company that
  • 00:02:19
    does sunscreened best and this
  • 00:02:21
combination makes the most sense to me.
  • 00:02:22
So we'll be offering three different
  • 00:02:24
forms of the box. You can get remedy for
  • 00:02:26
dark spots with their untinted and then
  • 00:02:28
two different shades of their tinted. I
  • 00:02:29
use their original tinted. That's the
  • 00:02:31
one that I've been using since the very
  • 00:02:33
beginning. They have the Alta MD UV
  • 00:02:35
clear which is one with nioinomide. We
  • 00:02:38
decided to do the Alta MD UV daily which
  • 00:02:40
    doesn't have nyioinomide and has
  • 00:02:41
hyaluronic acid and it gives you that
  • 00:02:44
nice dewy finish which I absolutely love
  • 00:02:45
    because you're already getting your
  • 00:02:47
nycinomide in our remedy for dark spot
  • 00:02:49
product at night. So use remedy for dark
  • 00:02:52
spots at night. Use Alta MD UV daily in
  • 00:02:54
the morning and that's your entire dark
  • 00:02:56
spot routine. And if you do that for 2
  • 00:02:58
months, you're almost guaranteed to see
  • 00:03:00
results. Thank you to Alta MD for
  • 00:03:02
supporting remedy. Thank you to all of
  • 00:03:03
you for supporting remedy. This box will
  • 00:03:05
only be available for a limited time, so
  • 00:03:07
grab it while it's still in stock. It's
  • 00:03:09
going to be discounted so that you could
  • 00:03:12
have the ultimate dark spot duo bundle.
  • 00:03:13
Now, back to our regular scheduled
  • 00:03:15
    program.
  • 00:03:18
    [Music]
  • 00:03:20
5 years ago, I started to create videos
  • 00:03:22
because I walked into a Sephora as a
  • 00:03:24
dermatologist. I looked at the shelves
  • 00:03:26
and I felt completely overwhelmed. I
  • 00:03:27
didn't even know where to start. So, I
  • 00:03:29
went and I bought some cologne at the
  • 00:03:31
back of the store and I walked out. And
  • 00:03:33
the truth is, even when I walk into
  • 00:03:35
Sephora today, I still feel overwhelmed.
  • 00:03:37
And the reason is there's tons of
  • 00:03:38
    different brands. They're trying to
  • 00:03:39
market to you in different ways. And as
  • 00:03:41
somebody who loves beauty, I love
  • 00:03:42
testing and trying new products. But the
  • 00:03:45
reality is most people don't need a lot
  • 00:03:46
of the products that are out there. And
  • 00:03:47
so in this video, we're going to be
  • 00:03:49
outlining exactly what you need. So to
  • 00:03:52
start this off, there's only one product
  • 00:03:54
that you actually need, and we'll work
  • 00:03:56
backwards from there. Right? So the
  • 00:03:58
foundation for healthy skin is simply
  • 00:04:00
sunscreen. Because for the majority of
  • 00:04:03
    people, simple protection equals
  • 00:04:05
    prevention equals healthy skin. You
  • 00:04:07
decrease your risk of skin cancers,
  • 00:04:08
which is for us perhaps the most
  • 00:04:10
    paramount concern. But additionally, you
  • 00:04:12
will decrease your risk for everything
  • 00:04:14
from wrinkles to dark spots to uneven
  • 00:04:16
texture to tone, everything that comes
  • 00:04:18
with time. You will actually have a
  • 00:04:20
    tremendous improvement if you're only
  • 00:04:22
proactive. Now, to prove that this is
  • 00:04:23
true, I'm going to show you two pictures
  • 00:04:26
here. one picture about somebody who was
  • 00:04:27
getting sun exposure on one side of
  • 00:04:30
their face over many, many years in the
  • 00:04:31
quality of skin difference between the
  • 00:04:33
face that was getting sun and the side
  • 00:04:34
of the face that wasn't getting sun. So,
  • 00:04:35
you notice that all the things that
  • 00:04:37
we're trying to treat with all the
  • 00:04:38
lotions and potions out there, a lot of
  • 00:04:40
this could be prevented by just
  • 00:04:41
protecting your skin from the sun. And
  • 00:04:43
another picture showing areas that are
  • 00:04:46
clothed versus areas that are unclothed.
  • 00:04:47
And the areas that are clothed that
  • 00:04:49
don't get as much sun exposure are a lot
  • 00:04:51
younger looking, a lot healthier looking
  • 00:04:53
than the areas that are sunexposed. And
  • 00:04:55
so just protect your skin from the sun
  • 00:04:56
and a lot of the issues that we see will
  • 00:04:58
go away. Well, we could just end the
  • 00:05:00
video right there telling you to wear
  • 00:05:02
sunscreen. But it's not quite that
  • 00:05:03
simple. And we'll list a bunch of our
  • 00:05:05
    favorite sunscreens below. We'll also
  • 00:05:06
link some of our videos that we've done
  • 00:05:08
on our favorite sunscreens because you
  • 00:05:09
still need to figure out which sunscreen
  • 00:05:11
are you going to use after all of this.
  • 00:05:12
Right? So, you're going to wear
  • 00:05:13
sunscreen on your face, but you can't
  • 00:05:15
leave that on perpetually and apply
  • 00:05:16
layer after layer after layer after
  • 00:05:17
layer throughout your life. So, you have
  • 00:05:20
to wash it off. Now, cleansing is one of
  • 00:05:21
the most simple steps, one of the most
  • 00:05:23
affordable steps, does not need to be
  • 00:05:25
complicated, but it is still a necessary
  • 00:05:27
step in having healthy skin. The second
  • 00:05:28
product that you need is simply a
  • 00:05:30
cleanser. And this is where you're going
  • 00:05:31
to pick a cleanser just based on your
  • 00:05:33
skin type. Now, again, if you're new to
  • 00:05:34
skincare, what is your skin type? Just
  • 00:05:36
pick up any basic cleanser to be honest,
  • 00:05:38
but you can orient this based on your
  • 00:05:39
skin type. So, if you have oily skin,
  • 00:05:41
you kind of know who you are. When you
  • 00:05:42
wash your face, you're oily all over.
  • 00:05:44
You're glistening in the sun after about
  • 00:05:46
an hour. You're oily. Pick a cleanser
  • 00:05:48
for oily skin. A foaming cleanser or a
  • 00:05:49
cleanser with a little bit of salicylic
  • 00:05:51
acid is going to be really good at
  • 00:05:53
removing that oil. If you have dry skin,
  • 00:05:54
look for a hydrating cleanser. That's
  • 00:05:56
going to make a big difference for you.
  • 00:05:57
So, very simple. Pick a cleanser based
  • 00:05:59
on your skin type. Now you have a
  • 00:06:01
sunscreen. Now you have a cleanser. And
  • 00:06:02
then finally, the final step. So the
  • 00:06:04
final step, we were a little split on
  • 00:06:06
this. It's a little controversial, but
  • 00:06:08
we agree to disagree, but I agree that I
  • 00:06:10
agree with him tentatively. And it is a
  • 00:06:12
    moisturizer. So moisturizing is probably
  • 00:06:14
the final step in the bare minimum
  • 00:06:16
skincare routine. Right? So there's your
  • 00:06:18
    entire skincare routine. Morning and
  • 00:06:20
night. Cleanse in the morning follow
  • 00:06:22
with sunscreen. At night, cleanse to
  • 00:06:23
    remove that sunscreen. Use a
  • 00:06:26
    moisturizer. That's your entire skincare
  • 00:06:27
routine. It's three products. And then
  • 00:06:29
there's debate on do you cleanse once a
  • 00:06:31
day, do you cleanse twice a day, do you
  • 00:06:32
just use water in the morning? And you
  • 00:06:34
can do whatever you want. There are
  • 00:06:35
there's only one study on this that
  • 00:06:37
shows that people that cleanse twice a
  • 00:06:38
day have less acne than people that
  • 00:06:40
cleanse once a day. Doesn't matter.
  • 00:06:41
Listen to your skin. That's your entire
  • 00:06:43
routine. Okay. So we could stop there.
  • 00:06:45
especially if you have no skin concerns,
  • 00:06:46
right? That's the basics of a routine
  • 00:06:48
for somebody who has no skin concerns
  • 00:06:50
and they want their skin to just age in
  • 00:06:52
a healthy way. Now, many of you come to
  • 00:06:54
    skincare or discover skincare because
  • 00:06:55
you have some type of issue with your
  • 00:06:57
skin that you're trying to treat.
  • 00:06:58
    Whether that's acne, whether that's
  • 00:06:59
    wrinkles, whether that's
  • 00:07:01
    hyperpigmentation, and that's where you
  • 00:07:03
have to introduce an ingredient that
  • 00:07:04
actually treats these. And I don't think
  • 00:07:06
    that there's really a one-sizefitit all,
  • 00:07:07
    even though there's probably one
  • 00:07:09
ingredient that can do most of this. You
  • 00:07:10
want to pick a product that's going to
  • 00:07:12
treat that main skin concern that you
  • 00:07:14
have. So, I'm talking to you. We're
  • 00:07:15
having a conversation. You come to see
  • 00:07:17
me in the office. My first question is
  • 00:07:18
going to be, "What is your main skin
  • 00:07:20
concern that you're trying to treat?"
  • 00:07:22
Answer that in your head. And then now,
  • 00:07:23
we're going to walk through what you
  • 00:07:25
would use as a treatment between your
  • 00:07:28
cleanser and your moisturizer at night
  • 00:07:29
to target most of your skin concerns.
  • 00:07:32
So, starting off for acne, what would be
  • 00:07:34
the ingredient that you would use over
  • 00:07:36
the counter first? Over the counter,
  • 00:07:37
there's no debate. It's adapylene. Only
  • 00:07:39
a couple derivations of this. It used to
  • 00:07:41
be a prescription ingredient, but by and
  • 00:07:43
far it is the most effective option you
  • 00:07:45
will find. It's adapylene. So, your
  • 00:07:47
night routine at home over the counter
  • 00:07:50
    cleanser, adapylene moisturizer. Simple.
  • 00:07:52
Now, prescription, what would be the
  • 00:07:53
    ingredient that you would use?
  • 00:07:55
    Prescription, I'd default to tininoan.
  • 00:07:57
This is the gold standard for acne.
  • 00:07:59
Also, aging by the way, just saying. It
  • 00:08:01
might be a one-izefits-all, but really
  • 00:08:02
it's probably the most effective gold
  • 00:08:04
    standard treatment for acne that
  • 00:08:06
everyone would start with. Next up, dark
  • 00:08:08
spots, discoloration. What would be the
  • 00:08:09
ingredient you would use over the
  • 00:08:10
    counter?
  • 00:08:11
    >> This one's a little tricky. I will say
  • 00:08:14
    specifically for dark spots, uh,
  • 00:08:18
retinol, like exfoliating acid. Uh, I'll
  • 00:08:20
say retinol still because it targets
  • 00:08:23
more of the key steps in the production
  • 00:08:25
of dark spots as well as removal of dark
  • 00:08:26
    spots. So, retinol for me.
  • 00:08:28
    >> Retinol for me also. And then
  • 00:08:29
prescription. What would you go with?
  • 00:08:31
    >> Tininoan. No. What am I talking about?
  • 00:08:32
    It's hydroquinone. Of course,
  • 00:08:34
    hydroquinone being the gold standard
  • 00:08:36
    bleaching cream, bleaching ingredient to
  • 00:08:38
lighten your skin. This is what every
  • 00:08:39
other dark spot ingredient is compared
  • 00:08:41
    against. So, hydroquinone. Yeah,
  • 00:08:43
    hydroquinone definitely. Now, with the
  • 00:08:44
caveat, obviously, you can't be on
  • 00:08:46
    hydroquinone forever. After 3 months,
  • 00:08:47
you do need to switch to another
  • 00:08:49
lightning ingredient. And so, I would
  • 00:08:50
use it for 3 months to really knock back
  • 00:08:52
my hyperpigmentation and then I would
  • 00:08:54
switch to an ingredient like retinol.
  • 00:08:56
The for the next skin concern, let's go
  • 00:08:58
with wrinkles over the counter. What
  • 00:09:00
would your first wrinkle choice be? I
  • 00:09:03
would go with retinaldahhide honestly if
  • 00:09:04
I had to pick one. You know it's one
  • 00:09:06
step closer to your active form of
  • 00:09:09
retinoid over the counter and it has a
  • 00:09:10
lot of studies on the anti-aging and
  • 00:09:11
    tolerability.
  • 00:09:13
    >> Okay. And then for prescription I would
  • 00:09:15
go with tininoan again here because
  • 00:09:18
tininoan has 50 years of data showing
  • 00:09:20
its ability and fine lines and wrinkles.
  • 00:09:22
    >> Okay. Yeah. No disagreement for me. It's
  • 00:09:23
interesting with a lot of these aging
  • 00:09:25
concerns. I'm like keep throwing back
  • 00:09:26
like do you want your glycolic acid? Do
  • 00:09:27
you want your exfoliating acid? But
  • 00:09:29
we're just going with the bare basics.
  • 00:09:30
What is the one thing you should use?
  • 00:09:32
So, I'm with you. We're back to
  • 00:09:35
retinoids. Next would be, let's say,
  • 00:09:37
pores. Over the counter, what would you
  • 00:09:39
use to minimize the appearance of your
  • 00:09:40
pores? I think this could be debated. I
  • 00:09:42
could say retinol or I could say sal
  • 00:09:45
acid. I'll probably go with sal acid in
  • 00:09:46
    this case.
  • 00:09:48
    >> Yeah, I kind of agree with you because
  • 00:09:49
not only does it remove the gunk from
  • 00:09:51
the pores, it does gently exfoliate,
  • 00:09:53
lightly exfoliate. So, it does a little
  • 00:09:55
of both. Sal acid for pores over the
  • 00:09:56
    counter. And then prescription for
  • 00:09:57
    pores.
  • 00:09:59
    >> I would probably go with tininoan here
  • 00:10:00
    in this case.
  • 00:10:02
    >> See why I was lobbying for this to be in
  • 00:10:04
the need category. Like we had this
  • 00:10:05
debate before the video started. Like
  • 00:10:08
it's borderline need. Anyway, I digress.
  • 00:10:11
Okay. Next up, next topic. Let's say
  • 00:10:12
hair loss. Over the counter. What would
  • 00:10:14
you use for hair loss? I would use
  • 00:10:16
    minoxidil. Topical minoxidil. So you'll
  • 00:10:19
see a lot of shampoos and serums and you
  • 00:10:21
    know natural ingredients marketed to
  • 00:10:22
you, but the only one that's actually
  • 00:10:24
approved is minoxidil. I would go with a
  • 00:10:26
5% minoxidil. Even though this isn't
  • 00:10:28
    technically skincare, dermatology covers
  • 00:10:30
it. What would you go for prescription?
  • 00:10:32
    >> Prescription I would it's a little it's
  • 00:10:34
a little tailored towards the person
  • 00:10:35
which is why this is difficult but I'll
  • 00:10:38
go with oral minoxidil because it's more
  • 00:10:40
    broadly recommendable, more
  • 00:10:41
generalizable I think than the other
  • 00:10:43
    prescription ingredients. Yeah, I would
  • 00:10:45
agree with that. What about for texture?
  • 00:10:47
Somebody who's just got some bumpiness,
  • 00:10:49
some texture on the face, on the
  • 00:10:51
forehead. What would you use for that?
  • 00:10:53
Over the counter, I'd go with uh
  • 00:10:55
glycolic acid for this one. This is an
  • 00:10:57
alpha hydroxy acid one that it
  • 00:10:59
    penetrates more deeply. It exfoliates,
  • 00:11:00
breaks up the bonds between skin cells.
  • 00:11:02
So, I think this would be the most
  • 00:11:04
    effective directed treatment for
  • 00:11:06
texture. And then for prescription, I
  • 00:11:08
would still go with tininoan because
  • 00:11:10
    there's no prescription glycolic acid.
  • 00:11:12
But I might still in the office
  • 00:11:14
recommend someone to use a glycolic acid
  • 00:11:16
higher concentration or I might do a
  • 00:11:18
mild chemical peel on somebody in the
  • 00:11:19
office while they're there just to
  • 00:11:21
    eliminate that texture while they're
  • 00:11:22
there. So I think exfoli exfoliating
  • 00:11:24
acids are probably superior here. But if
  • 00:11:25
I had it to choose a prescription,
  • 00:11:27
tininoan would be the only thing in my
  • 00:11:29
    armamentarium. Okay. Another common
  • 00:11:31
concern would be rosacea. This one's
  • 00:11:32
tough because there are different types
  • 00:11:34
of rosacea, but over the counter, what
  • 00:11:37
    would you use?
  • 00:11:39
I would use probably azelleic acid here.
  • 00:11:42
    A 10% or a 15% azelleic acid that you
  • 00:11:44
can find over the counter. Now, this is
  • 00:11:46
going to do a lot of that work. And it's
  • 00:11:48
we're really limited with what we have
  • 00:11:49
    over the counter. Prescription, what
  • 00:11:50
    would you use?
  • 00:11:54
    >> I would say probably Ivormectin. And
  • 00:11:55
this is you know that sound by this like
  • 00:11:58
oh my god like like I want that sound
  • 00:11:59
here because the price of topical
  • 00:12:02
    ivormectin or cilantro specifically is
  • 00:12:04
unaffordable. Um actually that's why we
  • 00:12:06
made it through script where we combined
  • 00:12:07
actually a lot of these things like
  • 00:12:09
    azelleic acid mronitis ivormectin into
  • 00:12:11
like one product because it actually
  • 00:12:12
makes it affordable and usable but
  • 00:12:15
ivormectin although difficult to get I
  • 00:12:17
would pick that for my prescription.
  • 00:12:19
Yeah, I would say and this is going to
  • 00:12:20
deviate a bit and then there's obviously
  • 00:12:22
some nuance here probably depends on the
  • 00:12:24
type of rosacea like if somebody has
  • 00:12:26
just the redness form of rosacea versus
  • 00:12:28
    the pimply papulopuscular form of
  • 00:12:30
rosacea. So to me it would depend on the
  • 00:12:32
type of rosacea but ivormectin would be
  • 00:12:34
a really good start. Yeah. So if you're
  • 00:12:35
someone with healthy skin let me
  • 00:12:37
summarize this for you. You basically
  • 00:12:38
instead of cleanse, treat, protect, you
  • 00:12:41
just cleanse and protect. That's your
  • 00:12:42
whole routine. And then for each of the
  • 00:12:44
common skin concerns, we have given you
  • 00:12:46
some of our favorite options. is what we
  • 00:12:48
believe will be most effective for you.
  • 00:12:49
And there are a lot of other things you
  • 00:12:51
can do to help simplify your routine or
  • 00:12:52
other ways you can get ingredients to
  • 00:12:53
    make your life easier,
  • 00:12:55
    >> right? And that doesn't mean that, you
  • 00:12:57
    know, adding a particular ingredient
  • 00:12:59
like a hyaluronic acid serum is not
  • 00:13:00
going to give you incremental benefits
  • 00:13:02
to your skin. But if you're thinking
  • 00:13:03
about what are the basics, what are the
  • 00:13:04
things that I actually need? I'm
  • 00:13:06
    frustrated. I'm overwhelmed. I don't
  • 00:13:08
even know where to start. Like Dr.
  • 00:13:09
Maxfield said, very simple if you have
  • 00:13:11
no major skin concerns. And then you can
  • 00:13:13
add in just one ingredient to target
  • 00:13:14
your main concern if there's something
  • 00:13:16
that you're actually trying to go after.
  • 00:13:17
Many of you are not new to the channel,
  • 00:13:19
so you already know about remedy. You
  • 00:13:21
already know about script. But if you're
  • 00:13:23
new to the channel, I created remedy to
  • 00:13:25
    really simplify people's routines, which
  • 00:13:26
is why we have our all-in-one
  • 00:13:28
treatments. For example, you have remedy
  • 00:13:30
for healthy aging, which is uses a
  • 00:13:32
    combination of retinaldahhide, peptides,
  • 00:13:34
and exfoliating acids to really target
  • 00:13:36
the different signs of aging. We have
  • 00:13:38
remedy for dark spots that uses a
  • 00:13:40
    combination of retinol, kic acid,
  • 00:13:42
    nioinamide, glutathione, all in one
  • 00:13:44
formula to target your dark spots. So
  • 00:13:45
for that treat step, you get something
  • 00:13:47
that's really super stacked for it. Dr.
  • 00:13:48
Maxfield created scripts so that you
  • 00:13:50
could get access to a board-certified
  • 00:13:52
dermatologist in the United States from
  • 00:13:53
your home so that you can get
  • 00:13:55
    ingredients like tininoan, like your
  • 00:13:57
azelleic acid, like your ingredients for
  • 00:13:59
    rosacea and hyperpigmentation shipped
  • 00:14:01
directly to your door. So if you're new
  • 00:14:02
to the channel, you're trying to start
  • 00:14:04
    skincare, definitely check out Remedy
  • 00:14:05
and Script. We appreciate all of your
  • 00:14:07
    support. Hopefully this helps to
  • 00:14:09
demystify all the craziness that's out
  • 00:14:10
there. And we'll see you all in the next
  • 00:14:12
    video.
