2024 there weren't a whole lot and most

of these disappointments were more of

like I was expecting more from this band

or artist and not necessarily that the

album was bad you know uh much like you

know I don't do a worst of 2024 just
00:00:56
because I don't know just because it
00:00:58
didn't hit with me doesn't make it a bad

record it's just it didn't connect with

me now these are all in alphabetical

order and that's across the board within

this list this isn't a rank list I've

first talk about the disappointments and

we're going to start this whole list off

with Aurora with what happened to the

heart I was really looking forward to

this because I really loved Aurora's
00:01:28
last record it had like this this really
00:01:33
fun aspect this really haunting lots of
00:01:36
like almost like ghostlike style
00:01:39
vocalizations it was like it did
00:01:42
something very new and very exciting and
00:01:44
I felt like what happened to the
00:01:47
heart was more of the same but lesser
00:01:51
than her last records uh next one comes
00:01:53
to us from David Gilmore luck and
00:01:56
strange this is probably my least
00:01:58
favorite of all of his solo records I
00:02:00
just feel like it was him having fun and
00:02:03
I don't begrudge him at all within this
00:02:05
there's a lot of writing styles that
00:02:06
he's done with his daughter on this and
00:02:09
I I can feel that there's this
00:02:11
connection that he has with this music
00:02:13
but I'm not necessarily feeling it you
00:02:15
know I feel like a lot of these tracks
00:02:17
are kind of half-baked you know like I
00:02:19
feel like these are kind of demos that
00:02:21
he was working with and he didn't really
00:02:23
allow the music to really develop
00:02:27
organically and it just it left me kind

of cold and I'm kind of saddened that

this was his what could be his last
00:02:35
record he's kind of going out on one of
00:02:38
his weaker ones all right coming to the

next one I was really looking forward to

this one and once

again kind of disappointed especially

since well let's just talk about it this

is the decemberist with their as it ever

was so it shall be again again I was

really looking forward to this one there

was teasing that it was a return to form

to some of their more progy aspects like

like the hazards of love and the crane

wife and it just kind of felt like a

continuation of the last two records

that we've gotten from this you know

I'll be your girl and what a terrible

World What a Wonderful World I haven't

really been all that excited for these

past two records and this one kind of

continues that I felt like with all

their albums leading up to that point of

World I felt like each record really had

a unified identity you know like the
00:03:30
crane wife had a unified identity that

was very different than her majesty

which was very different than uh long

live the king or the king is dead um

like each album really had that unifying
00:03:41
feel and I feel like all the records
00:03:43
that have come past that have just been
00:03:46
collections of tracks and songs that
00:03:48
they were writing rather than coming
00:03:49
into a studio to really bang out an
00:03:52
album and that was one of the things
00:03:54
that I loved about the decemberist like
00:03:56
they were coming in to create an album
00:03:59
and this one just kind of left me flat

and their big epic the big 19 20 minute
00:04:04
record track that ends this record off
00:04:08
it just ah I felt like they were
00:04:10
wandering the landscape a little too
00:04:11
much within that more doomy atmospheric
00:04:14
sound Rock moment on that track and it
00:04:18
didn't really satisfy
00:04:20
my coming together for a big epic you

know and I know that they can do it they
00:04:25
did it with the train they did it with
00:04:26
the entire album of uh the hazards of
00:04:29
love so I know that they're able to
00:04:31
craft these big pggy

moments heck with the crane wife you
00:04:35
know the island um and I just felt like
00:04:37
this was them wandering the landscape
00:04:39
and not quite knowing what to do so yeah
00:04:42
a little bit disappointed with that one

moving on let's talk about Dune and
00:04:46
their void Kind album Dune had my
00:04:49
favorite record from
00:04:51
2021 I think it was uh so I was really
00:04:54
looking forward to this one and it's
00:04:56
good but it never reaches the same
00:04:58
Heights as their record it never really
00:05:01
like had those buildups and payoffs that
00:05:03
I was really looking forward to it's a
00:05:04
lot more atmospheric and I mean that's
00:05:06
fine if that's what you're coming to for
00:05:08
this band but that's not the only reason
00:05:12
why I'm coming to this band I love their
00:05:14
buildups I love their payoffs I love
00:05:16
those really meaty Jam sessions that
00:05:18
they have and I just didn't quite feel
00:05:20
it in the same vein that I have with
00:05:22
their past works this one might be their
00:05:25
weakest record in my mind but you know
00:05:29
again it was was the expectations that I
00:05:30
was bringing in to this record the same
00:05:33
can be said about this next record of
00:05:34
lepus uh Melodies and atonement again we
00:05:38
were being teased quite literally with
00:05:41
some of the singles on this we had Anar
00:05:42
screaming and yelling again that he
00:05:44
hasn't done in quite a while you know
00:05:46
opth did it to some pretty good success
00:05:49
this year uh and you know their last two
00:05:52
records of pitfalls and um I can't even
00:05:55
remember it is that really bad um jeez
00:05:59
ailan on that's it um again they just
00:06:02
kind of left me cold you know a little
00:06:04
bit more atmospheric it felt much more
00:06:06
like uh an in our solo project and last
00:06:10
year we got a really good record from
00:06:11
him you know 16 was really good he was
00:06:13
stretching his legs he was trying
00:06:14
different things he was kind of showing
00:06:17
his you know virtuosity within his
00:06:19
Landscapes of different sounds and I was
00:06:22
hoping that he brought that into this
00:06:24
project and every track was just the
00:06:26
same kind of paint by numbers lepus
00:06:28
tracks that we' gotten in the past sure
00:06:30
they're heavier yeah there's a little
00:06:32
bit more Dynamics within the mixing and
00:06:34
within the masteries of this but it just
00:06:38
you can only take so much copy and paste
00:06:40
throughout an album before it starts to
00:06:42
run cold and starts to run you know not
00:06:44
as exciting so yeah Melodies of
00:06:46
atonement really left me cold especially
00:06:49
since their last handful of Records
00:06:51
really did so uh but this was the one
00:06:53
that kind of like kind of did a bait and

switch especially with all the lead-ups

to this record so yeah uh another one

that we'll talk about coming more into

the pop because I really love the pop

records that were coming out this year

let's talk about St Vincent and all born

screaming even though this made it onto

my top 50 list um you know Daddy's home

and some of her past works I really

loved I love that more kind of like
00:07:17
Stevie Nick style70s style of the singer

songwriter and this one didn't have that
00:07:23
same kind of teeth it didn't have that
00:07:25
same kind of oomph it is darker it's a
00:07:27
little bit more sharper but it didn't
00:07:29
have that same kind of immediate hook
00:07:32
that I loved about St Vincent's works so

a little bit disappointed in that one

also one that really disappointed

me yeah let's talk about Taylor Swift

with her the tortured poets Department
00:07:45
this year was set up to be like Taylor
00:07:48
Swift's year you know he h she had her
00:07:51
eras tour that was making its way all
00:07:55
across the world at this point it wasn't
00:07:57
just confined to the US we had the movie
00:08:00
you know it was streaming on Disney plus
00:08:03
everybody was reaching back into her
00:08:04
back catalog she was redoing a bunch of
00:08:07
records and like she was line she was
00:08:10
lining herself up to a really easy win
00:08:13
and the port tortur poets Department
00:08:15
kind of failed on a lot of different
00:08:17
ways you know the way that it was
00:08:19
released having a smaller record being
00:08:22
released those first couple of weeks and
00:08:23
then surprise here's an even bigger one
00:08:26
that you now have to buy again marketing
00:08:28
wise you know it was very smart but for
00:08:31
a consumer point of view I felt burnt
00:08:34
you know I felt kind of betrayed where
00:08:37
you know I bought her vinyl and CD on
00:08:40
date of release and then surprise that
00:08:42
was the wrong version you actually
00:08:44
should have boughten this big Deluxe the
00:08:46
Anthology and then the music that's
00:08:48
found on there was lackluster and I
00:08:52
don't know it didn't have that same kind
00:08:53
of heart and that same kind of Soul
00:08:56
there wasn't that hunger that I felt
00:08:58
like she had on on her past works you
00:09:00
know it wasn't like the lockdown session
00:09:02
records that she had for Evermore and
00:09:04
folklore which I really loved and it
00:09:07
didn't have that same kind

of feeling that midnights did you know

where there was a little bit of variety

there was a little bit of

differentiations on it the tortur poets

department is far too long with too many

tracks that sound the exact same so yeah

in a year that was full of pop icons

coming into their own Taylor Swift

dropped the ball hard so yeah that's

that's I was really disappointed with

that one okay moving on let's talk about

twerp TWRP with their digital nightmare

another one that I was really looking

forward to I love twerp and even with
00:09:44
digital nightmare it's a good record and

that's that's why I always put the

disclaimer at the top of the episode of

saying like these disappointments aren't

bad records and in fact I would say that

digital nightmare is a good record it's
00:09:56
just earlier in the year you know right

around the crest of 20 like 2023 to

2024 they put out this brilliant EP of
00:10:06
VHS and each track on that album was
00:10:09
Banger after Banger after Banger and I
00:10:11
think there's only like four tracks on
00:10:12
there but like some of the best work
00:10:14
that twerp has done in terms of that
00:10:16
funky Bas Groove that really inventive
00:10:20
vocal stylings uh coming into this like
00:10:23
disco dancable electronic music that I
00:10:26
love from twerp and then we come into
00:10:29
digital Nightmare and outside of the
00:10:31
first and last track off of this most of
00:10:33
it is forgettable you know and that's
00:10:35
kind of what I felt with their last full
00:10:37
length record and I felt like with the
00:10:39
EP of VHS I'm like we're getting into
00:10:41
that exciting very catchy very immediate
00:10:45
dancable
00:10:47
grooves and this one just kind of once
00:10:49
again left me flat and I was really
00:10:51
disappointed with that one final two cuz

there's 10 of them final two let's talk

about the Von herzon Brothers in
00:10:57
memori I loved Red Alert in the blue

Forest one of my favorite records of

2022 I think it was that it came out

2022 2023 um so I was really looking

forward to what the Von Herson Brothers
00:11:10
was going to have next and in
00:11:12
murmuration is fine it's a good record

but what I loved about Red Alert was how

prag it was you know we had a couple

tracks that were in the 10-minute mark

it was there was a lot of buildups a lot
00:11:24
of payoffs a lot of playouts that I
00:11:26
really really appreciated and this one
00:11:28
kind of strapped all that out you know
00:11:30
there's only like one or two tracks on
00:11:32
here that I'll return to the rest is

just fun rock music with a little bit of
00:11:36
a pggy edge to it and it just with how
00:11:40
much I loved Red Alert I was really

looking forward to whatever Von herzon

Brothers had coming out next and this

one it left me cold the final one within

the disappointments let's talk about

weather systems with ocean without a

Shore kind of being The Unofficial

successor of
00:11:56
anathema I should have liked this a lot

more but I think what really held it

back was how much they clung and
00:12:03
clutched the anathema brand you know
00:12:06
calling the like calling the band
00:12:08
weather systems which is essentially you
00:12:10
know one of their most popular records
00:12:14
um and the song writing ship the song

Styles is almost too closely resembling
00:12:20
uh anema I just feel like Dan Kavanaugh

could have done a little bit more and
00:12:25
maybe should have you know reframed this
00:12:27
as more of like a solo project rather
00:12:29
than a successor um and yeah I just I

don't know it once again it just left me

cold um and I feel like Within These

disappointments that's kind of the

flavor that I'm feeling within that all

right let's talk about some of those

surprises now these aren't necessarily

my favorite records of the year but

these were the ones that I I found I

liked a lot more than I was expecting to

annabis with the forgivable uh sorry the

unfor forgivable that's the one um yeah

this one kind of came out of nowhere for

me uh their last record really left me

cold if I'm being perfectly honest that

was a big disappointment especially
00:13:10
coming from a long run of brilliant
00:13:13
brilliant
00:13:14
records I was really disappointed with
00:13:16
that last record but this one put them
00:13:18
back on track you know this one put them
00:13:20
back on track and I loved how it was
00:13:22
essentially one track divided throughout
00:13:24
the runtime of this album and it really
00:13:27
surprised me I really dug it another one
00:13:29
that I really loved was the firebird
00:13:31
from dirp Robbins now I really loved
00:13:33
Queen of the Night their last record but
00:13:35
I feel like this one elevated it even
00:13:37
further it's a little bit more of a
00:13:38
celebration of sound rather than the
00:13:40
Queen of the Night which was a little
00:13:41
bit more doom and gloomy um and I love
00:13:44
the story I love how it all comes
00:13:46
together into this really Crescendo
00:13:48
moment at the end where they kind of
00:13:50
reintroduce and reimagine Stravinsky's
00:13:53
Firebird site really love that one a lot
00:13:56
of fun on that uh let's talk about Frost
00:13:59
within the wires um yeah this one really
00:14:02
surprised me their last two records of
00:14:04
you know what is it day for night um and
00:14:07
falling satellites wasn't a big fan of I
00:14:09
really didn't connect with those records
00:14:11
at all um but this one felt like they
00:14:14
were going back to what worked within
00:14:15
million toown and experiments in Mass
00:14:17
Appeal and kind of move the music
00:14:19
forward this is a proper double disc
00:14:21
concept record and I really enjoyed that
00:14:24
um and yeah I mean I believe this one
00:14:26
won the Prague reports album of the year
00:14:29
and it was very welld deserved like I
00:14:30
can't argue with that wasn't necessarily
00:14:32
my favorite record of the year but it it
00:14:34
got us back to you know what I loved
00:14:37
about Frost uh next up is Haven of
00:14:40
Echoes with momento Veri um yeah their
00:14:44
first record didn't really do too much
00:14:46
for me and I know a lot of people love
00:14:47
that record um I don't know it just it
00:14:50
didn't have like the substance you know
00:14:51
it didn't have the juice as I like to
00:14:53
say uh but Haven of echo proves
00:14:55
themselves you know to be within the the
00:14:59
more modern Neo progue uh you know in
00:15:02
the same vein as like an anathema as I
00:15:04
mentioned before uh but also like a
00:15:06
gaspacho and the longer stretches of
00:15:09
Music uh I think really help this record
00:15:11
the actual structuring of this record is
00:15:14
exactly what I love to hear uh and they
00:15:17
show that they can Master a buildup and
00:15:19
a payoff very very well a lot of these
00:15:21
longer tracks are very satisfying for me
00:15:23
they're a really good time um and yeah
00:15:26
it really surprised me uh let's go into
00:15:28
an album that might not necessarily be a
00:15:30
good record but it definitely surprised
00:15:31
me that was Jeremy Renard's record of
00:15:33
love and titanium uh the last track off
00:15:36
of this one was uh really good you know
00:15:38
I didn't expect you know the actor that
00:15:40
plays Hawkeye uh to put out a country
00:15:42
and western folk record that wasn't
00:15:45
complete dog uh and this one proved
00:15:48
that he can do it um I know that this
00:15:51
tackles a lot of his like you know after
00:15:52
his big accident where he was you know
00:15:55
he could have essentially been
00:15:57
completely paralyzed uh but his recovery
00:16:00
of that and what got him through it and
00:16:03
I really appreciate that and that's
00:16:05
found within this music it's not usually
00:16:07
my typical Mo within music but this year
00:16:10
proved that I can step out of my comfort
00:16:12
zone and enjoy some really good music
00:16:14
and that's what I found with love and&
00:16:16
titanium it was a lot of fun let's go to
00:16:19
a record that I will always talk about
00:16:21
within this styling and that is Jimmy
00:16:23
Keegan self-titled album his kind of
00:16:26
Debut record for those of you that don't
00:16:27
know Jimmy Keegan is uh an individual
00:16:30
that's kind of picked up the mantle
00:16:32
within the Spock beard era um and I felt
00:16:35
like he is doing some of the things that
00:16:37
I really love about like later Spock
00:16:41
beard uh especially within their last
00:16:42
two records even though those aren't
00:16:43
necessarily my favorite records from the
00:16:45
band some of the more playful aspects
00:16:47
and some of the more cooky quirky and
00:16:49
strange aspects of the band I feel like
00:16:52
Jimmy is more of the Mastermind behind
00:16:54
that and he's applying a lot of that
00:16:56
styling to this record and I couldn't
00:16:59
help but love this record you know it
00:17:01
was a lot of fun and even though I
00:17:02
wouldn't necessarily say that this is
00:17:03
one of the best records of the year I
00:17:05
would definitely say this is a record
00:17:07
that needs to be talked about and I was

kind of saddened to see that a lot of my

contemporary you know Prague reviewers

on here weren't necessarily giving this

any kind of you know talk about so this

their a dream is all we have uh I know a

lot of my friends and contemporaries

here on YouTube Love the lemon twigs and

their last record of everything Harmony

was their first record that I actually
00:17:33
wanted to sit down and listen to all
00:17:35
their albums kind of leading up to this

point I wasn't all that excited for I

just felt like it was very same same you
00:17:41
know kind of the throwback singer
00:17:42
songwriter 7s 60s rock era and this was
00:17:46
the first one that I'm like oh this is
00:17:48
really good you know like it made my top
00:17:51
10 I think uh albums of the year um and
00:17:55
it is just an absolute Delight you know
00:17:57
this is coming from my favorite styles
00:18:00
of the 60s and 70s singer songwriter
00:18:03
that I really appreciate and enjoy you

know it's got a little bit more of the
00:18:07
ELO uh got a little bit of like the
00:18:10
Beach Boys and the Beatles felt within
00:18:12
this without being a complete retread
00:18:14
you know a lot of bands that are trying
00:18:16
to do this throwback styles are just
00:18:19
copy and pasting uh but I feel like
00:18:21
these guys are kind of coming into their
00:18:23
own and doing it in their own style and
00:18:25
I really appreciate that and I really
00:18:27
love that one uh all right the final

three let's talk about pure reason
00:18:31
Revolution with coming up to
00:18:32
Consciousness their last two records
00:18:35
again after their big Hiatus I wasn't
00:18:38
all that excited for but this was the
00:18:40
first one that really connected with me
00:18:41
and part of that might be it's a little
00:18:43
shorter uh I think the tracks are a lot
00:18:46
meteor and I feel like they took their
00:18:48
time with this one you know this is
00:18:50
probably their best work since the dark
00:18:52
third you know the big album that
00:18:54
launched them into the stratosphere
00:18:56
within this um and I really found myself
00:18:59
coming back to this one again it didn't
00:19:00
necessarily make my top 50 but it really
00:19:03
surprised me and I really enjoyed coming
00:19:05
back to this one all right final two
00:19:07
let's talk about rosalene Cunningham to
00:19:09
shoot another day her first two records
00:19:12
in the solo project that she's working
00:19:14
on um were still good you know I still
00:19:16
kind of prefer when she's working with
00:19:18
person but these albums are still a lot
00:19:22
of fun and this was the one that really
00:19:24
surprised me like this is my favorite
00:19:25
record in this kind of solo uh sandbox
00:19:29
that she's working with it's got that
00:19:31
throwback more psychedelic side of the
00:19:33
singer songwriter side of things you
00:19:35
know blending a little bit of a harsher
00:19:36
tones you know getting flavors of like
00:19:38
heart and Stevie Nicks and things like
00:19:41
that that have a little bit more teeth
00:19:43
uh but just as enjoyable and just as
00:19:46
immediate uh so some really great stuff
00:19:48
from Ros Ley Cunningham really like that
00:19:50
one and the final one was one that I
00:19:52
feel like not a lot of people were
00:19:53
talking about in terms of the
00:19:55
progressive metal side of things and
00:19:57
that is whom God destroyed
00:19:59
with

insanium again I feel like uh whom Gods
00:20:03
destroy didn't really connect with a
00:20:05
whole lot of people but I had a lot of
00:20:06
fun with this one you know not
00:20:08
necessarily the best you know far and
00:20:09
away from the best but it just surprised

me you know debut record it's a little

cringe especially within you know a
00:20:16
album title like insanium from whom Gods

destroy but there's just something so

fun about it it's bringing me back to

like Camelot or Symphony X in terms of

like that just fun balls the- wall

insane progressive metal without it
00:20:34
being too Tech death metal without it be
00:20:36
to extreme death metal you know this is
00:20:40
just classic capital M Metal within the
00:20:43
Prague vein and I just had a great time

with it I absolutely had a great time

with it all right let's talk about these

records that I kind of forgot came out

this year and it wasn't until this big

about this album forever the first three

tracks of this album are some of the

best music that big big train has done

in a while like we're going on decades

the second half of this record I kind of

with power nerd this was a record that

just kind of came and went you know like

it's not a bad record it's quite a good

record but he's done this style before

and I feel like this is just Devon

having fun and I will praise the man for

to follow Polaris honestly on paper this

is actually quite a good record and Andy

being kind of the only one working on

applaud him for that

um but it didn't connect with me as much

as I was really hoping it would with his

some of his past work like proxy and L

going back further with a place in the

queue not as good as the book uh the

music that died alone uh the world that

divides the world that we drive um it

like Z from 2020 with their flower Toria

2023 last year was bear ghost and this

year was uh the last dinner party like

all those bands and Records I didn't

really know or were too familiar of

going into that year so I'm really

looking forward to whatever band or

artist really surprises me in 2025 so
