- 00:01:29our on sunday i began by asking him to
- 00:01:32explain who Roger stone is and his
- 00:01:34connection to Roy Cohn he was a protege
- 00:01:37of Roy Konya something in common with
- 00:01:39Donald Trump other than being friend and
- 00:01:42often on political adviser to Donald
- 00:01:44Trump he Trumper both the protegees of
- 00:01:47Roy Cohn their origins in politics and
- 00:01:51really in all of the way they deal with
- 00:01:53life and business come from the same
- 00:01:57place and that's the late Roy M Cohn so
- 00:02:01before we go to the later I M Cohen talk
- 00:02:03about your feelings on Friday on that
- 00:02:05day that the that began with a raid of
- 00:02:08Roger stones house and just who Roger
- 00:02:10stone is
- 00:02:12Roger stone is a political dirty
- 00:02:15trickster whose methods and persona
- 00:02:18really dovetail with and pre-staged of
- 00:02:23the Trump administration they're cut
- 00:02:27from the same cloth and again they have
- 00:02:28the same mentor I can't overstate the
- 00:02:30importance of that this comes from the
- 00:02:33dirty pool kind of illegitimate
- 00:02:38political world that work home
- 00:02:40personified Richard Nixon toiled in and
- 00:02:45Donald Trump is the kind of delayed
- 00:02:49re-emergence of this dirty pool
- 00:02:52transactional type of politics that now
- 00:02:55really is verging on to a type of
- 00:02:58fascism that I think has been incipient
- 00:03:01in our Republic for a long time but has
- 00:03:05emerged and the point of the film is
- 00:03:07that the seeds for this were planted
- 00:03:09long ago and Roy Cohn was a major seller
- 00:03:13of those seeds let's go to a clip of
- 00:03:16Roger stone from your film talking in
- 00:03:20the same way you're talking
- 00:03:21interestingly about Roy Coen Donald
- 00:03:25Trump and well Roger stone himself Roy
- 00:03:28would always be for an offensive
- 00:03:30strategy those are the rules of the war
- 00:03:32you don't fight on the other guy's
- 00:03:34ground you define what the debate
- 00:03:37I think learned that from Roy I learned
- 00:03:40that from Roy that's Roger stone talking
- 00:03:44about Roy and Cowan so Matt turn our
- 00:03:47take us there
- 00:03:48take us to who Roy M Cohen is and how
- 00:03:53you became so fascinated with him Roy
- 00:03:56Cohn would have been I think a very bold
- 00:03:57footnote in American history if it
- 00:04:00hadn't been for the surprising result of
- 00:04:02the election of 2016 he was at a very
- 00:04:06young age the handmaiden of Joseph
- 00:04:09McCarthy in the early 50s on through the
- 00:04:12mid-50s he was most famous for those
- 00:04:16photographs of him whispering into the
- 00:04:18ear of McCarthy during the infamous
- 00:04:21Senate subcommittee witch-hunting
- 00:04:24hearings where McCarthy demagogue of his
- 00:04:28era was trying to root out mostly
- 00:04:31imaginary communists in the State
- 00:04:33Department and other branches of the
- 00:04:35government
- 00:04:36Cohn was a son of great privilege who
- 00:04:40become an attorney in fact he graduated
- 00:04:42from law school so young he couldn't
- 00:04:44take the bar exam for another year he
- 00:04:47was a prodigy and he was a very
- 00:04:48brilliant man it turned out through the
- 00:04:51course of his life he used his
- 00:04:53brilliance for mostly the dark arts of
- 00:04:56manipulation and self enrichment and
- 00:05:01certainly later in his career even
- 00:05:03literally mafia activities he was became
- 00:05:06the number one mob lawyer and in this
- 00:05:08country but he was also the great I
- 00:05:10called the CEO of the favor Bank he was
- 00:05:12the great political fixer of his time so
- 00:05:15well the mob is where Donald Trump comes
- 00:05:18in in his early years of being a
- 00:05:21developer in Manhattan but go back even
- 00:05:23further to the Rosenbergs from before
- 00:05:29the McCarthy here sure Roy Cohn cut his
- 00:05:32teeth in public life as the junior
- 00:05:35prosecutor in the Rosenberg spy case
- 00:05:39which was an infamous trial of to do
- 00:05:45Americans Julius and Ethel Rosenberg who
- 00:05:48were accused of and convicted of sharing
- 00:05:53atomic secrets with the Soviet Union
- 00:05:55conspiring to yes and Cohn was among a
- 00:06:01group of Jewish lawyers and judges who
- 00:06:04were appointed to give the impression
- 00:06:07that it was not an anti somatic
- 00:06:09prosecution he proved himself to be
- 00:06:12incredibly aggressive and very very
- 00:06:15savvy at gaining publicity for himself
- 00:06:17and for the cause that he was pushing
- 00:06:20and he is perhaps most famous in this
- 00:06:23for engaging in a very questionable
- 00:06:26collusion with the judge who was judge
- 00:06:28Kaufman and judge Kaufman legend has it
- 00:06:32would call Roy Cohn the prosecutor in
- 00:06:34the case outside of his synagogue Park
- 00:06:38Avenue synagogue in New York to ask what
- 00:06:41Cohen the junior prosecutor for guidance
- 00:06:43on what kind of sentencing he should
- 00:06:45hand down Roy Cohn and just to be clear
- 00:06:48ex parte communications between the
- 00:06:50judge and a prosecutor are illegal you
- 00:06:52said and Cohen was occur encouraging him
- 00:06:55by Cohen's own admission to give the
- 00:06:58death penalty not only to Julius who
- 00:07:00turned out was indeed guilty and fo who
- 00:07:04was no one's ever proven guilt for the
- 00:07:06couple were sentenced to death and
- 00:07:09executed in the electric chair it was a
- 00:07:11truly traumatic moment for certainly the
- 00:07:16Jewish community of the United States
- 00:07:18but also really the United States at
- 00:07:20large in the film unearths footage
- 00:07:23contemporary footage that was actually
- 00:07:25very shocking to me I didn't realize how
- 00:07:27violent and emotional the protests were
- 00:07:30in the streets of New York City on the
- 00:07:32day of the execution and this was what
- 00:07:34June 21st 1953 that's right and Cohen at
- 00:07:38the time was I believe 23 and of course
- 00:07:41the message that was sent all over the
- 00:07:43country with the execution of this
- 00:07:46couple at sing-sing putting them in the
- 00:07:49electric chair interestingly you have a
- 00:07:52clip of Roger stone that we want to turn
- 00:07:54to right now
- 00:07:56remembering what Roy Cohen said to him
- 00:07:59about their execution when you would try
- 00:08:01to get him to talk about Joe McCarthy or
- 00:08:05the army McCarthy trials or that whole
- 00:08:08period J Edgar Hoover you couldn't get
- 00:08:12much out of him
- 00:08:14on the Rosenbergs I asked him how he
- 00:08:17felt about it I told my read of the case
- 00:08:19and he said and I quote if I if I could
- 00:08:22have pulled the switch I'd have done it
- 00:08:24myself
- 00:08:26that doesn't sound like like remorse I
- 00:08:29think Roy was a hardliner to the end
- 00:08:31that's Roger stone and from the
- 00:08:34documentary where is my Roy Coen talking
- 00:08:37about Roy and Coen and the execution of
- 00:08:40the Rosenbergs Matt turn our it seemed
- 00:08:43to me that someone in their early 20s
- 00:08:46who had killed a mother of two who was
- 00:08:51almost certainly not guilty of the crime
- 00:08:53for which he was convicted and murdered
- 00:08:56by the state might have some feelings of
- 00:08:59remorse for this later in life as he was
- 00:09:02on his own deathbed for instance I asked
- 00:09:05stone that and stone gave the answer
- 00:09:07that you just saw on the phone club so
- 00:09:10let's move forward down to the McCarthy
- 00:09:12hearings in Washington
- 00:09:13Roy M Cohen becomes his right-hand man
- 00:09:15famously and you show this so
- 00:09:18beautifully in the film constantly in
- 00:09:20the ear of McCarthy you've got two sets
- 00:09:23of hearings you've got the original
- 00:09:26McCarthy hearings going after communists
- 00:09:28and then you've got the army McCarthy
- 00:09:32hearings and you describe this as an
- 00:09:35early reality TV very trumpian explain
- 00:09:39what took place army McCarthy is a
- 00:09:42byword in our culture the McCarthy era
- 00:09:45of course is the dictionary definition
- 00:09:47of witch hunting and and demagoguery and
- 00:09:50the big lie in politics the army
- 00:09:53McCarthy hearings details and the
- 00:09:55nuances I really feel have been lost to
- 00:09:57history and lost in the the very poorest
- 00:10:02education system we have in this country
- 00:10:04that just doesn't teach history
- 00:10:06thoroughly so I wanted to show a
- 00:10:10granular portrayal of this peculiar
- 00:10:13episode that occurred that really
- 00:10:17riveted the nation at the dawn of the
- 00:10:20age of television what happens in the
- 00:10:23complex army McCarthy scenario is that
- 00:10:26cone is McCarthy's protege Cohn as a
- 00:10:31string puller and favored doer wants to
- 00:10:35do a particular favor for someone a
- 00:10:37certain someone special to him
- 00:10:39that is a young man named G David shine
- 00:10:41who is the scion of a wealthy hotel
- 00:10:44family and it was just Roy Cohn's type
- 00:10:49sexually speaking
- 00:10:50it turns out Cohn we haven't mentioned
- 00:10:53yet was gay and very deeply in the
- 00:10:55closet in this period he clearly has a
- 00:10:59romantic crush on David shine and gets
- 00:11:01him on Joseph McCarthy's committee as a
- 00:11:04junior aide at a certain point in the
- 00:11:07Korean War period David shine is drafted
- 00:11:10into the Army as a private this incenses
- 00:11:13not only David shine but Roy Cohn so
- 00:11:17Cowan who was powerful at the time but
- 00:11:20not as powerful as he thought he was did
- 00:11:25what every wealthy spoiled child might
- 00:11:29do except this one happened to be
- 00:11:32occupying a Senate post he called the
- 00:11:35Secretary of the army and he threatened
- 00:11:37the Secretary of the army and he said
- 00:11:39either David shine is given a commission
- 00:11:42as a general not a private and posted in
- 00:11:46the penthouse of the Waldorf Astoria
- 00:11:48Hotel in New York the city that Roy Cohn
- 00:11:51would happen to be his hometown or we
- 00:11:54were Cohn and Joseph McCarthy will go
- 00:11:57after the army and accuse them of being
- 00:12:00run by secret gay communists cabal the
- 00:12:06army didn't react well to this bizarre
- 00:12:09threat coming from a relative political
- 00:12:12nobody the one with great connections
- 00:12:15and a connection to the leading
- 00:12:17demagogue of the day Joseph McCarthy so
- 00:12:19the army pushed back we have to remember
- 00:12:21also that the president of the time was
- 00:12:24an army man Dwight Eisenhower was
- 00:12:26general and he didn't say much at the
- 00:12:28time but behind the scenes was did like
- 00:12:31these accusations being leveled against
- 00:12:34his branch in the military so what
- 00:12:36unfolds then is I believe the first
- 00:12:41instance of reality television unwitting
- 00:12:44reality television I think TV in its
- 00:12:46infancy was trying to find its footing
- 00:12:48and
- 00:12:49whatever was good spectacle and would
- 00:12:52ever get people to tune in flu at the
- 00:12:55time this was a open televised hearing
- 00:12:59with a sensationalistic charge and a
- 00:13:02secret homosexual subplot it made the
- 00:13:07stuff of perfect television drama really
- 00:13:10although no one really knew what was
- 00:13:11going to happen it was an open-ended
- 00:13:13narrative which it really is the
- 00:13:14definition of reality TV so talk about
- 00:13:16the really the climax of these hearings
- 00:13:21with the counsel for the Secretary of
- 00:13:25the army what ended up happening was the
- 00:13:29army lawyered up and went after McCarthy
- 00:13:32and Cohn and they hired a very good
- 00:13:35lawyer a very folksy telegenic avuncular
- 00:13:41man who was a Boston Brahmin attorney
- 00:13:45named Joseph Welch Welch played his
- 00:13:48cards beautifully on TV and in the
- 00:13:50hearing room here and he paced himself
- 00:13:52he's sort of lüt his fellow questioners
- 00:13:57pick apart this bizarre scenario
- 00:14:01McCarthy and Cohen are demagoguing and
- 00:14:03trying to show that there are communists
- 00:14:05and gays in the army and that they're
- 00:14:07bad for the United States and and
- 00:14:09bringing down the Republic and the
- 00:14:10democracy basically the army was able to
- 00:14:13poke holes in that eventually near the
- 00:14:16end McCarthy
- 00:14:19CiCi's losing this battle and he wants
- 00:14:21to fight back there had been a backroom
- 00:14:23deal made at a certain point that one of
- 00:14:27the people that they were going to drag
- 00:14:29through the mud was an associate of
- 00:14:32Welch's in his Boston law firm who may
- 00:14:34or may not have been a member of a group
- 00:14:36that may or may not have had some
- 00:14:38communist leanings it wasn't even a
- 00:14:40communist front it was it was really
- 00:14:41nothing as most of the charges McCarthy
- 00:14:43leveled were and Cohen had told Welch
- 00:14:46I'll trade you not implicating this guy
- 00:14:50for something else and McCarthy missed
- 00:14:53that meeting and he started to bring
- 00:14:56this
- 00:14:58young man's name into the hearings on
- 00:15:00television and Welch realized that he'd
- 00:15:03broken the agreement and went after
- 00:15:04McCarthy and he says words it turned out
- 00:15:09to be immortal very few words but
- 00:15:11they'll always be remembered among
- 00:15:13anyone who is a student of history and
- 00:15:16even people who were casual TV viewers
- 00:15:18at the time and it's I'll miss some of
- 00:15:21these words but it was basically senator
- 00:15:22you've done enough and he's sort of
- 00:15:25winding up like a pitcher would wind up
- 00:15:27at long last have you no sense of
- 00:15:31decency
- 00:15:44it's the Russell hearing room of the
- 00:15:46Senate which was where Neetu Hills draw
- 00:15:48a trial hearing took place bursts into
- 00:15:52applause you can see McCarthy's face
- 00:15:54just collapses basically he goes pale
- 00:15:57and this caught the conscience of an
- 00:16:00entire nation because of television and
- 00:16:02it led to the very quick discrediting
- 00:16:06and downfall and eventual censure of
- 00:16:09Joseph McCarthy in the Senate and it
- 00:16:10destroyed work hone as well as a Senate
- 00:16:13aide and that really ended the McCarthy
- 00:16:19era Joseph Welch it should have ended
- 00:16:22Roy Cohn but it did not let's leap
- 00:16:25forward to his relationship with Donald
- 00:16:31Trump how he came to know Donald Trump
- 00:16:34so Cohn has an immediate success as a
- 00:16:38lawyer in New York and people have said
- 00:16:42to me journalists have asked me how
- 00:16:43could someone so discredited worm his
- 00:16:46way to the top echelon of New York
- 00:16:49society after having crashed and burned
- 00:16:51so badly and humiliated himself and
- 00:16:54everyone around him in the McCarthy in
- 00:16:56army McCarthy period
- 00:16:57my answer is have you ever met New York
- 00:16:59Society it's the most transactional
- 00:17:02place in the world and Roy Cohn was the
- 00:17:05king of
- 00:17:07relationships I call him the CEO of the
- 00:17:10favor Bank and that's the way he
- 00:17:13operated and and to great success all
- 00:17:17through the 60s all through the early
- 00:17:1970s and there comes a day a fateful day
- 00:17:22when roy cohn power broker mob lawyer
- 00:17:27meets a young man who was the just
- 00:17:33starting out son of a major real estate
- 00:17:36developer in queens in brooklyn and
- 00:17:39Donald J Trump Trump was pure
- 00:17:42outer-borough material he had the money
- 00:17:46but he didn't have the status he was
- 00:17:49considered to be very uncouth and was
- 00:17:52not welcome in the important places in
- 00:17:54New York City business and society but
- 00:17:57he had a burning aspiration to rise to
- 00:18:00those levels he did find his way to a
- 00:18:03chic nightclub at that time called La
- 00:18:06Club on kind of Midtown East and
- 00:18:09Manhattan which existed until relatively
- 00:18:11recently in fact in that kind of Swing
- 00:18:16II proto disco environment he meets the
- 00:18:19famous work home at that precise moment
- 00:18:22the Justice Department was going after
- 00:18:25Trump's father and Trump himself who was
- 00:18:28a junior partner in the Trump family
- 00:18:30real estate business for racial
- 00:18:32discrimination at the time it was very
- 00:18:35provable that the Trump Housing Company
- 00:18:37was taking the rental applications of
- 00:18:40minority applicants and marking them
- 00:18:42with a code word which was c4 colored
- 00:18:44and then denying them rental apartments
- 00:18:48the Justice Department was going to come
- 00:18:50down very hard on them and Trump was
- 00:18:52worried and wanted to help his father
- 00:18:54and help himself out of this nasty
- 00:18:56predicament he explained the predicament
- 00:18:59to Roy Cohn that night and said hey can
- 00:19:01you help me get out of this and Cohn
- 00:19:04said absolutely come see me tomorrow
- 00:19:05morning Trump did and Cohn in the room
- 00:19:09with him outlined a strategy for
- 00:19:13conquering this Justice Department suit
- 00:19:16against them which really was the game
- 00:19:19plan that Trump followed every day for
- 00:19:22the rest of his life and into our own
- 00:19:24lives and our daily lives now fully
- 00:19:27provable that they were engaging in
- 00:19:30racist practices but they never admitted
- 00:19:33it that's right so they settled and
- 00:19:38settling is not technically an admission
- 00:19:41of guilt now Trump says he never settles
- 00:19:44but of course he settles all the time
- 00:19:45and Cohen says he never settled or never
- 00:19:47pleaded and he pleaded and settled all
- 00:19:49the time but Cohen's premise was never
- 00:19:53admit guilt and the settlement is an
- 00:19:55admission of guilt and if you don't
- 00:19:57admit guilt you can go to the press and
- 00:19:59admit and claim victory pure Roy Cohn
- 00:20:02so Roy Cohen was not only his lawyer
- 00:20:04that he turned to one of his lawyers but
- 00:20:07he was considered him one of his best
- 00:20:09friends he was constantly Ari and best
- 00:20:12friend in in Cohen's eyes he in the film
- 00:20:15on on an interview that he gives in the
- 00:20:18early eighties brags that Donald Trump
- 00:20:21and a letter to him says that he's his
- 00:20:23best friend when Trump buys the Bonwit
- 00:20:26teller building this massive concrete
- 00:20:28building historic and then in its place
- 00:20:32builds Trump Tower talk about the
- 00:20:35blueprint basically that involves the
- 00:20:38mob and Roy Cohen the Trump Tower story
- 00:20:42is exemplary it's just that's the
- 00:20:45pattern for the way Trump and the Trump
- 00:20:47Organization did business and again it's
- 00:20:49torn from the PlayBook of Roy Cohn it
- 00:20:53probably didn't need to be this way the
- 00:20:55corners were cut to generate maximum
- 00:20:57profits and I think it was also in that
- 00:21:00time in New York just part of what you
- 00:21:03did as a scold augur to kind of get the
- 00:21:06Mafia involved and you know get special
- 00:21:09privileges to speed up construction etc
- 00:21:11etc etc so this was a really corrupt
- 00:21:15project and I want to give credit to the
- 00:21:18journalist David Cay Johnston who was
- 00:21:20doing this reporting and
- 00:21:22back in the 80s and has been chronicling
- 00:21:25the the bad business dealings of the
- 00:21:28Trump Organization for years and we we
- 00:21:30rely on an interview with David Cay
- 00:21:32Johnston in the film to explain how
- 00:21:35something was very peculiar about the
- 00:21:38construction of Trump Tower which roy
- 00:21:39cohn helped Donald Trump achieve an
- 00:21:42engineer and in Trump a rather cone
- 00:21:46shows off a letter from Trump thanking
- 00:21:48him for allowing of the the fast
- 00:21:52realization of the Trump Tower project a
- 00:21:54few things in particular though Trump
- 00:21:57towers built of concrete buildings in
- 00:22:00the 80s in New York were very rarely
- 00:22:02built of concrete they were built of
- 00:22:04structural steel usually which is a much
- 00:22:05more efficient way to build and one
- 00:22:07reason it was more efficient was that
- 00:22:09the mob at the time controlled the
- 00:22:11poured concrete contract business and
- 00:22:15you need to pay off the mall and also
- 00:22:18the mob in a bit of subtle skullduggery
- 00:22:21control the unions so the unions could
- 00:22:24close the construction fences and keep
- 00:22:27the cement mixers waiting to come in to
- 00:22:31the construction site and ruin your
- 00:22:32cement and cost you you know millions of
- 00:22:36dollars basically but indeed this
- 00:22:38building went up made of concrete
- 00:22:40because Roy Cohn according to Johnston's
- 00:22:42reporting introduced Trump to all of his
- 00:22:46mafioso connections that allowed this
- 00:22:48project to go forward without any
- 00:22:51interruptions there was another very
- 00:22:54famous thing which also I believe
- 00:22:55Hillary Clinton brought up in the
- 00:22:58campaign which was that the bomb would
- 00:23:00tell her building which was the building
- 00:23:02that preceded Trump Tower on that site
- 00:23:04was demolished by a group of illegal
- 00:23:08immigrants called the Polish brigade
- 00:23:10that were brought down to New York City
- 00:23:12from Rochester New York Trump never paid
- 00:23:16them so not only was he employing
- 00:23:18illegal immigrants and not paying
- 00:23:20appropriate taxes and having any
- 00:23:23accountability on that in way back in
- 00:23:26the 70s and 80s but he was also sniffing
- 00:23:29people again pure Roy Cohn Cohn was an
- 00:23:32expert tax evader
- 00:23:34and stiffer of contractors and he Trump
- 00:23:38Donald Trump really learned this its
- 00:23:41thought from Cohn so we take this story
- 00:23:44decades later to just this week where
- 00:23:46the New York Times in Washington Post a
- 00:23:48reporting an undocumented immigrants who
- 00:23:50work at the Westchester golf course of
- 00:23:52President Trump and though they were
- 00:23:54honored for being best employee
- 00:23:56repeatedly one by one they were called
- 00:23:59in and they were fired they are speaking
- 00:24:01out and saying the Trump's full well
- 00:24:04knew that they didn't have the proper
- 00:24:07documents yes I mean so much of the film
- 00:24:11really is connecting the dots and giving
- 00:24:15even more truth to the famous George
- 00:24:18Santayana aphorism those who do not
- 00:24:21remember history are condemned to repeat
- 00:24:24it
- 00:24:24I also like to quote gore Vidal he used
- 00:24:26to say we live in the United States of
- 00:24:28amnesia all of this has precedent and
- 00:24:31sometimes very literal precedent the
- 00:24:33same people perpetrating the same
- 00:24:35misdeeds or crimes or telling the same
- 00:24:38lies and untruth they've been proven and
- 00:24:41reported on for years and yet it's
- 00:24:43occurring again now on a international
- 00:24:46scale with really terrifying long-term
- 00:24:50consequences so let's go back to your
- 00:24:52interview with Roger stone in 2017 where
- 00:24:55he once again quotes Roy Cohen Roy
- 00:24:59famously argued that all of the expenses
- 00:25:02of his law firm were were deductible the
- 00:25:07IRS did not see it this way Roy told me
- 00:25:10that the whole point of
- 00:25:12the IRS was to die owing them as much as
- 00:25:16humanly possible that's Roger stone in
- 00:25:19that Journal so there's a great
- 00:25:24interview with Mike Wallace and Roy Cohn
- 00:25:26where Wallace says to Cohn your attacks
- 00:25:30avoider and Cohen indignantly says we're
- 00:25:32all tax avoiders the president's tax a
- 00:25:34tax of would of course
- 00:25:35the president that cones talking about
- 00:25:36at that moment was Ronald Reagan but
- 00:25:40when you watch it now it has a certain
- 00:25:42resonance and ring to it and then
- 00:25:45Wallace brilliantly says well you're
- 00:25:47better at it than others and then clone
- 00:25:50says well don't blame me for your
- 00:25:51inadequacies Trump did the same thing in
- 00:25:55the debate with Hillary Clinton where
- 00:25:56she assailed him of tax evasion and he
- 00:25:59then leaned into the microphone and said
- 00:26:01that makes me smart and at that moment I
- 00:26:06my heart sank because I thought I could
- 00:26:08see that that would be a very populist
- 00:26:10one-liner and a debate actually conga
- 00:26:13thought I mean there's something about
- 00:26:16the public that loves a scoundrel and
- 00:26:19Cohn played back to the hilt and I think
- 00:26:21Trump also took that persona from his
- 00:26:25mentor Roy Cohn so now take us back to
- 00:26:27Roger stone the man who's now just been
- 00:26:30indicted in the Muller inquiry and talk
- 00:26:32about the triumvirate here Roy Cohen
- 00:26:37Roger stone and Donald Trump one of the
- 00:26:40people I spoke to off-camera about Roy
- 00:26:42Cohn and his relationship with Trump
- 00:26:45said to me not jokingly Donald Trump is
- 00:26:51Roy Cohn and you could say that about
- 00:26:55Roger stone I think Roger stone might
- 00:26:57say it about himself actually they
- 00:27:00swallowed Roy Cohn whole in a certain
- 00:27:03way and absorbed all of his incredible
- 00:27:08abilities at practicing the dark arts of
- 00:27:14manipulation of politics and media and
- 00:27:16understanding the nexus between politics
- 00:27:19and media and how to operate those
- 00:27:23lovers
- 00:27:24or really dark and selfish purposes
- 00:27:26that's really what cones mastery ended
- 00:27:30up being I think what you convey very
- 00:27:32well in this film is not just their
- 00:27:36manipulative nough sweather we're
- 00:27:38talking about Trump firstone or Cohen
- 00:27:41but the utter cruelty Roy Cohen willing
- 00:27:46to destroy lives
- 00:27:48whether in his anti-communist crusade
- 00:27:50his anti LGBTQ crusade even though he
- 00:27:54himself was a gay man ultimately he
- 00:27:57would die of AIDS though he denied this
- 00:27:59right that he was dying of AIDS yes he
- 00:28:02denied it consistently he denied it on
- 00:28:04camera off camera publicly and privately
- 00:28:06now President Reagan and Nancy were his
- 00:28:10dear friends President Reagan wouldn't
- 00:28:13mention aids for something like seven
- 00:28:16years of his presidency mm-hmm but in
- 00:28:18the very end of Roy Cohen's life you
- 00:28:21report that they got him into a special
- 00:28:24drug trial at the National Institutes of
- 00:28:27Health yes I mean this is one of the
- 00:28:30most bitter ironies and just really
- 00:28:34diabolical truths of clones life he
- 00:28:37spearheaded with McCarthy the lavender
- 00:28:40scare in the 50s ruining the lives of
- 00:28:43LGBTQ people in government of course he
- 00:28:46himself was one so that was bad enough
- 00:28:49he according to Nancy Reagan helped her
- 00:28:53husband get elected who actually was
- 00:28:54perhaps the key person for a variety of
- 00:28:57reasons the Reagan's had many gay
- 00:29:01friends but they were publicly and on a
- 00:29:05policy level as bad as you could be for
- 00:29:08gay rights and handling the hiv/aids
- 00:29:12plague at the time Cohn appealed to them
- 00:29:15for special treatment as he was secretly
- 00:29:19dying of the disease and Ronald and
- 00:29:21Nancy Reagan got him into an
- 00:29:22experimental treatment program at the
- 00:29:24NIH that very few people could get into
- 00:29:28their telegrams that we show on screen
- 00:29:30of Ronald Reagan lively ignoring
- 00:29:34the greatest public health crisis of our
- 00:29:36time telegram in where I cone wishing
- 00:29:39him good health and Godspeed as he gets
- 00:29:43out of the hospital and goes back home
- 00:29:45after a round of experimental treatment
- 00:29:48and then talk about how Donald Trump the
- 00:29:50man who called Roy Cohen his best friend
- 00:29:53how he dealt with Roy Cohen's suffering
- 00:29:56from AIDS many people who were witnesses
- 00:30:00to the relationship cite that Trump did
- 00:30:03back away from Cohn when he was on his
- 00:30:05deathbed
- 00:30:06at the same time Cohn was disbarred very
- 00:30:09late in his life with almost I think
- 00:30:11weeks left to live they managed after
- 00:30:15decades of trying at different levels of
- 00:30:17government to get him disbarred it was
- 00:30:21achieved he had late stage HIV illness
- 00:30:25at that time and it there are many
- 00:30:30accounts of him appealing to Trump for
- 00:30:33certain kinds of help and being nervous
- 00:30:35about what Trump would think and then
- 00:30:37Trump did according to his cousins who
- 00:30:41were very much present at the time of
- 00:30:43Cohn's illness back away left him to die
- 00:30:49alone as many of Cohen's friends did yes
- 00:30:53I think this is the the moral the story
- 00:30:58of being a transactional person in many
- 00:31:00ways Cohn had many friends but how true
- 00:31:03were these friends they were friends
- 00:31:05that were gained through being a master
- 00:31:07of transactional living transactional
- 00:31:10politics it was a total transactional
- 00:31:13figure when he had this travel disease
- 00:31:14which was a deeply ironic thing for him
- 00:31:17to die of he lost a lot of friends who
- 00:31:22were I think backing away because of
- 00:31:24these dual crises in his life disbarment
- 00:31:29and an assured death of a terrible and
- 00:31:33at that time we have to remember really
- 00:31:35extremely terrifying disease that was
- 00:31:38very little understood which brings us
- 00:31:41now to the title of your film where's my
- 00:31:44Roy Cohn
- 00:31:45talk about how you came after that
- 00:31:47where's my roy cohn is not a question
- 00:31:50it's a complaint issued by Trump in the
- 00:31:55White House in 2017 when I think he
- 00:32:00first felt the walls of the mother
- 00:32:02investigation closing in on him I don't
- 00:32:05think he could have predicted the length
- 00:32:09of this I think he thought he would
- 00:32:11short-circuit it and he was hoping that
- 00:32:12a roy cohn type would help him
- 00:32:15short-circuit it he was not able to find
- 00:32:18that in the person of his attorney
- 00:32:19general Jeff Sessions or his White House
- 00:32:22Counsel both of who both of whom have
- 00:32:24left office it's a fundamental
- 00:32:27misunderstanding of someone in the
- 00:32:29executive branch that the Attorney
- 00:32:31General or the White House Counsel
- 00:32:32serves him personally
- 00:32:34these are the these are the employees of
- 00:32:37a dictator these aren't the employees of
- 00:32:39a elected president in the United States
- 00:32:42the Attorney General represents the
- 00:32:43people the Justice Department represents
- 00:32:45the interests of the United States
- 00:32:46people are sovereign in the United
- 00:32:48States president's not sovereign I I'm
- 00:32:50not sure anyone's being able to explain
- 00:32:52that to Donald Trump but Roy Cohn taught
- 00:32:54him that he was sovereign where I Cohen
- 00:32:59behaved as if he was sovereign Cohn was
- 00:33:02sovereign and he convinced Trump that if
- 00:33:05you follow that playbook of ultimate
- 00:33:08selfishness and ends justifying means
- 00:33:11that you could get away with anything
- 00:33:13we're clone almost did
- 00:33:15it's Shakespearean an irredeemable his
- 00:33:19end but he's given us this delayed
- 00:33:28re-emergence of demagoguery that is the
- 00:33:33result of a seed he planted in the early
- 00:33:3780s I would say and has come back to
