00:00:00
this year for the first time members of
00:00:02
Generation Z those born after 1997 are
00:00:06
expected to outnumber Baby Boomers in
00:00:08
the workforce when asked to come in for
00:00:09
an 8 a.m. meeting my jenz new hire said
00:00:11
ug sorry I can't make it I have a
00:00:13
workout class should this be allowed my
00:00:15
visceral reaction was are you kidding me
00:00:17
I'm literally 6 months into my first
00:00:19
corporate job and I already want to quit
00:00:21
I woke up this morning and I was like
00:00:22
you know what today is today is the
00:00:24
perfect day to go over the bare minimum
00:00:26
Monday routine you say right now you
00:00:28
just won't hire JY Z employees no we
00:00:32
don't it's been a nightmare with 95% of
00:00:34
the ones that we have hired I have a
00:00:36
very high standard of living and like a
00:00:38
very low work ethic and so I'm just like
00:00:40
constantly caught in between like
00:00:42
wanting to make money but also not
00:00:44
wanting to do anything to actually make
00:00:46
money what do you mean what is my dream
00:00:48
job my dream is not to have a
00:00:52
job jenz the youngest generation
00:00:54
entering the workforce is rejecting work
00:00:57
culture as we know it and redefining
00:00:59
success on their own terms because of
00:01:01
this genen Z has gotten a lot of
00:01:02
backlash being labeled as lazy
00:01:04
unmotivated and a burden on society and
00:01:07
it's gotten to the point where some
00:01:08
employers are avoiding hiring jenz
00:01:10
altogether but is this really fair it's
00:01:12
not new for youth to struggle with
00:01:14
motivation so have the older Generations
00:01:16
just forgotten how lazy and unmotivated
00:01:19
they were in their youth or are today's
00:01:20
kids really just less willing to work I
00:01:23
myself feel very connected to this topic
00:01:24
as I'm the age bordering on gen Z if you
00:01:27
couldn't tell from my space buns being
00:01:29
born in 1995 and therefore is zillennial
00:01:32
I can relate to Jen Z's rejection of
00:01:34
corporate nonsense but in contrast the
00:01:37
millennial in me still feels that girl
00:01:38
boss pressure of the 2010s to pursue
00:01:41
sheo status you got into Harvard Law
00:01:45
what like it's hard so today we're going
00:01:46
to Deep dive into it and see if Jen's
00:01:49
approach to life is delusional or if
00:01:51
vibing their way into adulthood is
00:01:52
actually going to be better for everyone
00:01:54
in the end
00:02:00
I personally think that this decline in
00:02:01
Jen's aspirations all started with their
00:02:03
change in mindset of education and not
00:02:06
just college education but High School
00:02:08
school doesn't prepare you for real life
00:02:10
it doesn't prepare you for the real
00:02:11
world and I'm not saying drop out of
00:02:13
school I'm saying that it doesn't
00:02:15
measure whether you're talented or
00:02:17
creative or have a business mind or
00:02:20
whether you're artistic it doesn't
00:02:21
measure that it measures that you're
00:02:23
good at test taking you're good at
00:02:25
memorization you're good at sitting in
00:02:27
one place doing what you're told and
00:02:30
just following directions I have a
00:02:32
theory that us Millennials actually
00:02:33
started this trend where we started to
00:02:35
question what schools were actually
00:02:36
teaching us if you on Tumblr in the late
00:02:38
2000s early 2010s you'll remember all of
00:02:41
the memes about how silly it is that
00:02:43
we're prioritizing learning about the
00:02:44
mitochondria being the PowerHouse of the
00:02:46
cell and Pythagoras Theory but we didn't
00:02:49
learn any real life skills like how to
00:02:51
file our taxes and I feel like these
00:02:53
memes were the foundation of the
00:02:55
distrust of Education jenzie took this
00:02:57
Meme and ran with it to the point of
00:02:59
saying we're not just going to rebel
00:03:00
against the curriculum we're taught
00:03:02
we're going to give up on the school
00:03:04
system as a whole this math stuff is
00:03:06
never going to help me in the real world
00:03:08
I'm done we're going to lift this couch
00:03:11
on three you ready oh [ __ ] in a survey
00:03:14
jensy was actually asked about their
00:03:16
disappointment in the school system not
00:03:17
preparing them for life and they found
00:03:19
44% said that school only taught them
00:03:21
very basic Computing skills while 37%
00:03:24
said that the school system for children
00:03:26
under the age of 16 didn't prepare them
00:03:28
with the technology skills they needed
00:03:30
for their planned careers 40% considered
00:03:32
learning new digital skills essential to
00:03:35
future career options while I agree with
00:03:37
a lot of the pushback jenzy has towards
00:03:38
the education system I think in our
00:03:41
Millennial youth our Rebellion towards
00:03:43
the education system was because we
00:03:44
didn't have quite the right view on the
00:03:46
purpose of school while there are a lot
00:03:48
of problems in the school system and yes
00:03:50
I do think we should be learning more
00:03:52
practical skills like relationship
00:03:54
building understanding and regulating
00:03:56
emotions effective communication and
00:03:58
personal finance instead of just
00:04:00
mathematical equations most of us won't
00:04:02
ever use again there still is value to
00:04:04
learning these things this value comes
00:04:06
in learning problem solving skills
00:04:08
working in a group working solo time
00:04:11
management skills and so many other
00:04:13
things where the subject worked on isn't
00:04:15
necessarily as important as the skills
00:04:17
gained from learning it the purpose of
00:04:19
education is not the content you learn
00:04:21
but to develop your character to be
00:04:23
industrial and honest and to respect and
00:04:25
follow rules which allows us to live in
00:04:27
an orderly Society we can continue the
00:04:29
progress of past Generations by
00:04:31
continuing to innovate with the common
00:04:33
goal of improving the lives of everyone
00:04:35
around us as well Ray Deo one of the
00:04:37
world's leading Financial Minds says
00:04:39
strong education doesn't just teach
00:04:41
Knowledge and Skills but also strong
00:04:43
character Civility and work ethic that
00:04:45
provides a healthy respect for rules and
00:04:47
law low corruption and enables people to
00:04:49
unite behind a common purpose and work
00:04:51
well together this leads to Innovation
00:04:53
and invention of new technologies now I
00:04:55
feel like this quote can ruffle some
00:04:57
feathers as currently there's a lot of
00:04:59
push back against the school systems
00:05:01
purpose just being to create orderly
00:05:03
submissive citizens I don't know if
00:05:05
you're also on that side of the internet
00:05:07
but I don't want to get too deep into
00:05:08
that in this video I just include this
00:05:10
to say that I think Jen Z has gone a bit
00:05:12
far in the rejection of education and
00:05:15
that could be the downfall of their
00:05:16
future if they don't learn the practical
00:05:18
skills that come from succeeding in
00:05:20
school next we're going to talk about
00:05:21
Jen zz's attitude towards college but
00:05:23
before we do I do have to talk about
00:05:25
today's sponsors did you know that 40%
00:05:27
of supplements bought online do not
00:05:29
contain a detectable amount of the
00:05:31
ingredient listed this failure from the
00:05:33
FDA supplement approval process leaves
00:05:35
consumers unsure whether the supplements
00:05:38
they're buying will actually work or if
00:05:40
they're just falling for marketing scams
00:05:41
well this is the problem that equip is
00:05:43
trying to solve and not with a magic
00:05:45
pill but with Real Food Solutions equip
00:05:47
emerged from a realization that the
00:05:49
supplement industry is full of lies and
00:05:51
deception but more importantly that the
00:05:53
best source of nutrition is real food
00:05:55
itself they're committed to sourcing the
00:05:57
best ingredients ensuring each product
00:05:59
is as natur natural and clean as
00:06:00
possible I've been using their beef
00:06:02
protein that contains 21 G of
00:06:04
bioavailable complete protein from
00:06:06
grass-fed beef all in one scoop and one
00:06:09
of my favorite things is that it's made
00:06:10
from just a handful of carefully sourced
00:06:12
ingredients on that note have you guys
00:06:14
ever tried hitting protein goals it's
00:06:17
actually kind of hard unless you're very
00:06:19
intentional about every meal you're
00:06:21
eating and in the midst of the chaos of
00:06:23
young children in my life I just have a
00:06:26
hard time prioritizing that and that's
00:06:28
why I love equips beef protein
00:06:30
because they make it easy for me to get
00:06:31
my protein in with again real food
00:06:33
ingredients they come in a range of
00:06:35
flavors but my favorite is chocolate
00:06:37
because I just mix it with milk and so
00:06:39
it tastes like chocolate milk so if you
00:06:41
would like to try out the cleanest
00:06:42
protein on the market equip is offering
00:06:44

00:07:00
Health Journey one of the hardest times
00:07:02
of day for me is the afternoon because
00:07:05
all morning I've been running around
00:07:06
with the kids and then nap time and
00:07:08
quiet time come and I crash the problem
00:07:11
is that that's when my work hours start
00:07:13
since I'm trying to balance being a
00:07:14
stay-at home mom and YouTuber I just
00:07:16
have to use the time slots available for
00:07:19
work which means working in the
00:07:21
afternoon when I'm so very tired just
00:07:23
because that's the only option I have
00:07:25
I'm not complaining it's just the
00:07:27
reality so with that in mind I've been
00:07:29
trying to to find new ways to get out of
00:07:30
that afternoon slump and one of my
00:07:32
favorite ways is with our sponsor Peak
00:07:34
peak's Su goddess matcha is made with
00:07:36
the highest quality and purest
00:07:38
ingredients for maximized benefits and
00:07:40
bioavailability it contains slow release
00:07:43
caffeine giving sustained energy without
00:07:45
Jitters caffeine crashes or anxiety I
00:07:48
love the sun goddess matcha because it
00:07:49
gives me that energy I need to get
00:07:51
through the second half of the day
00:07:53
without all the negative consequences
00:07:55
from having a second cup of coffee if
00:07:57
you remember from my Vlog days I used to
00:07:59
have a second cup of coffee around
00:08:01
midday but it would always backfire cuz
00:08:03
I'd end up shaky and anxious now I enjoy
00:08:06
my sun goddess matcha around noon and it
00:08:08
really helps me tackle my workday it's
00:08:10
also just really delicious being
00:08:12
ceremonial grade means that it's top
00:08:14
quality so if you would like to try out
00:08:16
peak's Sun Goddess matcho as well you
00:08:18
can get up to 15% off plus a free
00:08:20
rechargeable frother and a cup when you
00:08:22
use my link thank you to equip and Peak
00:08:24
for sponsoring today's video and thank
00:08:27
you to you guys for supporting my videos
00:08:29
whether through just watching the ads or
00:08:31
clicking the links in the description
00:08:33
and if you just skip past the ads I get
00:08:35
it that's fine too but now let's get
00:08:37
back to Jen's hatred of
00:08:40
[Music]
00:08:44
Education the rejection of education
00:08:46
does not stop at the high school level
00:08:47
with jenz as we know this sentiment
00:08:50
feeds right into Jen's view of college
00:08:52
as just 39% of gen Z said advancing
00:08:55
their education is important to them and
00:08:57
only 46% of them said they don't think
00:08:59
think college is worth the cost sitting
00:09:01
here in my 2 by two little college dorm
00:09:04
but I'm just trying to figure out what's
00:09:05
the point in college I'm going to be
00:09:07
here four years to get a degree for
00:09:11
something I might not even get a job in
00:09:14
that field so like it's no guarantee one
00:09:18
of the biggest reasons jenz has rebelled
00:09:20
against higher education is because
00:09:22
they're seeing that for a lot of people
00:09:23
it doesn't actually produce anything for
00:09:25
them or at least they're seeing the
00:09:27
promises of Education being false
00:09:29
Millennials grew up being told that you
00:09:30
needed post-secondary education to get
00:09:32
ahead in the world and I even remember
00:09:34
being told that it doesn't matter what
00:09:36
kind of education you get just anything
00:09:38
postsecondary get a degree and you'll
00:09:40
have a step ahead of everyone else which
00:09:42
sounds crazy now but we went for it and
00:09:44
that's how we got all the jokes about
00:09:45
Millennials with psychology degrees
00:09:48
working at Starbucks because that's what
00:09:50
we were told to do and we couldn't get
00:09:52
jobs after okay genuinely what is the
00:09:54
point of taking General classes in
00:09:57
college like non major specific classes
00:10:00
why am I taking classes that have
00:10:02
nothing to do with my major I needed a
00:10:04
Fine Arts Credit so right now I'm in a
00:10:07
class called The History of Rock I mean
00:10:09
it's a fine class but kind of feels like
00:10:12
a waste of my time it's basically some
00:10:15
hippie telling me his favorite rock
00:10:17
songs and why they matter I mean that's
00:10:20
a fine conversation to have but why did
00:10:23
I have to pay thousands of dollars for
00:10:25
it like how is this not a scam phoe Lee
00:10:28
a millennial in the corporate world
00:10:30
reflects on these false promises made
00:10:32
saying how did I end up in this position
00:10:34
the messaging I received throughout my
00:10:35
schooling was that I needed to absorb
00:10:37
all the knowledge and jump through all
00:10:39
the Hoops they placed for us in order to
00:10:40
get a good job which will ultimately
00:10:42
lead to a good fulfilling life but the
00:10:44
Mirage has been lifted and the real
00:10:46
world is nothing like the adults made it
00:10:48
out to be was it all a lie now with
00:10:50
Millennials speaking up about their
00:10:51
experiences in the workforce jeny has
00:10:53
the opportunity to weigh their options
00:10:56
and actually see what happens when they
00:10:57
go blindly into post secondary education
00:11:00
and they're seeing that if the career
00:11:02
path they desire doesn't actually
00:11:03
require postsecondary education then why
00:11:06
would you do it but it's not only the
00:11:07
lack of benefits of a degree that's
00:11:09
deterring gen Z from post-secondary
00:11:11
education it's the enormous cost the
00:11:14
cost of university has exploded to the
00:11:16
point where it's too expensive to just
00:11:18
get a fun college experience if you're
00:11:20
not going to get a career at the end of
00:11:21
the day that will pay off all those
00:11:23
bills the widening gap between the value
00:11:25
and the cost of college has started to
00:11:27
shift Jen's attitude towards higher
00:11:29
education a 2022 survey by morning
00:11:31
consult found that 41% of gen zers said
00:11:34
that they tend to trust us colleges and
00:11:36
universities the lowest percentage of
00:11:38
any generation it's a significant shift
00:11:40
from when Millennials were in their
00:11:41
shoes a decade ago and looking
00:11:43
specifically at how much the cost of
00:11:45
college has changed over the years we
00:11:47
see that the average annual increase in
00:11:49
college tuition from 1980 to 2014 grew
00:11:52
by nearly
00:11:53
260% compared to the nearly
00:11:56
120% increase in all consumer items here
00:11:59
in Canada the cost of postsecondary is
00:12:02
quite a bit lower than in the United
00:12:03
States but you're still looking at a
00:12:05
huge investment if you're only going to
00:12:07
get a mid-range salary from it College
00:12:09
used to be affordable enough that people
00:12:11
could just do it for fun as they labeled
00:12:14
it the college experience but jenzy
00:12:16
doesn't really get that option anymore
00:12:18
in the UK where one year of University
00:12:20
costs $122,000 recent data has found
00:12:23
that the Gap in earning potential
00:12:24
between graduates and non-graduates
00:12:26
shrinking stress testing the question of
00:12:28
whether degree is worth it in the US
00:12:30
tuition averages $20,000 per year a cost
00:12:33
that has more than doubled in the 21st
00:12:35
century and recent Pew data found only
00:12:38
22% of us adults report seeing the cost
00:12:41
of college as worth it even when
00:12:42
students need to take out loans only one
00:12:45
in four said it's extremely or very
00:12:47
important to have a four-year college
00:12:49
degree in order to get a well-paying job
00:12:51
in today's economy please tell me that
00:12:54
as a gen Z that just recently graduated
00:12:57
college that there are going to be other
00:12:58
people that feel this way too with how
00:13:01
the economy has been and with what our
00:13:04
parents and grandparents told us for
00:13:06
almost our whole lies of like hey go to
00:13:08
college get a degree you'll get a great
00:13:11
paying job you'll have this amazing
00:13:14
Fantastical life and now they flip the
00:13:16
switch on us and now that's something
00:13:18
that is almost impossible for Our
00:13:21
Generation I am so hopeless as a gen Z
00:13:25
with the fact that that with my student
00:13:27
loans which are over
00:13:30
$100,000 because college is that
00:13:32
expensive I now have no choice but to
00:13:35
move back home with my parents and live
00:13:36
with them for several years to save up
00:13:38
money but then in reality what money
00:13:40
will I be saving when I'll have to be
00:13:42
paying
00:13:43
$1,100 every month for my student loan
00:13:46
payments because I owe over $100,000 in
00:13:48
student loan debt and so if University
00:13:51
isn't offering that upper hand that it
00:13:52
once had for previous generations then I
00:13:55
think gen Z is making a level-headed
00:13:56
decision to not use it outside of the
00:13:59
professions that require it and with
00:14:00
that it's unfair to put that label on
00:14:02
jenz that they have no career Ambitions
00:14:04
when they just don't want to be forever
00:14:06
in debt to a
00:14:08
[Music]
00:14:12
university we will get back to the
00:14:13
effects this rejection of university has
00:14:15
on jenz but first I want to talk about
00:14:17
how the state of the world is affecting
00:14:19
Jen's Life Choices jenz has had a rough
00:14:22
ride for the start of their life as
00:14:24
they've had to deal with coming to age
00:14:26
during turbulent times compared to their
00:14:28
predecessors millennial and Gen X gen Z
00:14:30
has had to deal with one recession one
00:14:32
looming recession pressures of climate
00:14:35
change a pandemic and of course a cost
00:14:37
of living crisis and all of these things
00:14:39
affect the life Direction Jen Z pursues
00:14:42
here's the truth the fatigue of like
00:14:45
just being alive is really starting to
00:14:47
set in one of the biggest limitations
00:14:49
gen Z is dealing with is as we know the
00:14:51
housing crisis I feel like this topic of
00:14:54
the housing crisis is a little bit beat
00:14:55
to death but it is so important to note
00:14:57
because of the effects it has on Jen's
00:15:00
Future Between home prices and rental
00:15:02
prices housing is one of the biggest
00:15:04
struggles of this generation because
00:15:05
wages aren't keeping up hey I just want
00:15:07
you to know that I'll never be able to
00:15:08
buy a home because I just bought shampoo
00:15:10
deodorant a new toothbrush some new gel
00:15:13
for my hair and a little thing that
00:15:14
scrubs my sculp so no homeowner here to
00:15:18
afford the median priced home of
00:15:20
$400,000 Americans need an annual income
00:15:23
of roughly
00:15:25
$160,000 but the median household earns
00:15:27
just $74 ,000 only 45% of the
00:15:31
recommended amount and if you like most
00:15:33
adults can't afford to buy a house you
00:15:35
won't find much luck in the rental
00:15:36
market either between 1999 and 2022 rent
00:15:40
has grown
00:15:41
135% incomes have only increased by 77%
00:15:45
in that time isn't it wild that rent
00:15:46
prices are so bad that genuinely where
00:15:48
my brain goes is oh okay but if I lock
00:15:51
in a $2400 one-bedroom apartment and I
00:15:55
stay there for 30 years in 30 years when
00:15:59
rent for a one-bedroom apartment is
00:16:02
$35,000 all the young kids are going to
00:16:04
look at me and come to me on the street
00:16:06
interviews and be like how did you do it
00:16:09
how did you find a one-bedroom apartment
00:16:11
in Toronto for
00:16:12
$2,400 tell us your secrets that's where
00:16:15
my brain goes which is unwell and
00:16:18
looking at how that impacts people's
00:16:19
spending abilities the average portion
00:16:21
of a person's income that goes to rent
00:16:23
was 25% in 2000 it's now 40% which I
00:16:27
think is so funny we grew up being told
00:16:29
like don't spend more than 30% on
00:16:31
housing and then we're given this Market
00:16:34
where you can't spend 30% on housing you
00:16:36
have to spend more and people are still
00:16:38
saying that it's the young adults fault
00:16:40
for not being responsible with their
00:16:42
money anyways and this has led to an
00:16:44
epidemic if we can call it that of
00:16:46
people living with their parents for
00:16:48
longer than any other generation almost
00:16:50
half of those aged 18 to 29 are
00:16:53
currently dwelling with their parents
00:16:54
marking the highest level observed since
00:16:57
the Great Depression era and the cost of
00:16:58
housing is only the tip of the iceberg
00:17:00
as we know inflation affects everything
00:17:03
we spend our money on this survey found
00:17:04
out among a thousand gen zers 52% of
00:17:07
respondents said that they don't make
00:17:08
enough money to live the life they want
00:17:10
pointing to the cost of living as one of
00:17:12
the Main Financial challenges gen Z faes
00:17:15
man gen Z just don't want to work
00:17:17
anymore do they that could not be
00:17:18
farther from the truth gen Z is actually
00:17:20
one of the smartest and most intuitive
00:17:21
Generations that we have they realize
00:17:23
that the 40-hour work week is not
00:17:26
getting them the ability to afford basic
00:17:28
necess Necessities what is the
00:17:29
motivation to work 40 hours a week or 60
00:17:32
hours a week if you can't even afford
00:17:34
rent like nobody wants to just continue
00:17:36
to work and work and work and not be
00:17:38
able to pay their bills they're not a
00:17:39
lazy generation they are just tired when
00:17:42
you're a young adult just trying to get
00:17:43
your footing in the world but you're
00:17:44
faced with insufficient income and
00:17:47
extraordinary inflationary environments
00:17:49
it makes it very difficult to achieve
00:17:51
any financial goals or Ambitions and I
00:17:54
want to clarify that little treat
00:17:55
culture isn't to blame either the Bank
00:17:57
of America report found that nearly 70%
00:18:00
of genen years surveyed are implementing
00:18:02
Lifestyle Changes including cutting back
00:18:04
on dining out passing up on outings with
00:18:06
friends and shopping at more affordable
00:18:08
grocery stores Jen Z wants a lot of the
00:18:10
things that previous generations have
00:18:12
valued and are willing to work for it
00:18:14
they're just not giving the option being
00:18:16
a single person in America in
00:18:20
2024 I literally I do not recommend it
00:18:23
to anyone I am about to just find a man
00:18:25
off the side of the road who looks like
00:18:26
he has money suck it up and marry him I
00:18:28
just finished grad school okay and
00:18:30
before yall get to my comment saying you
00:18:31
shouldn't have gone to school you're
00:18:32
right but I am passionate about this
00:18:34
career and I just want to make a
00:18:35
difference in people's lives kill me
00:18:37
okay so I'm in the process of getting
00:18:39
pre-approved for a mortgage loan and
00:18:41
they ask me you know what is your
00:18:42
monthly repayment for your student loan
00:18:44
so I go to see what my actual monthly
00:18:46
repayment is and mind you my student
00:18:48
loan amount is not that high it's
00:18:50
nothing obscene I owe
00:18:54
$748 a
00:18:56
month there is literally there's no [ __ ]
00:18:59
I am in my late 20s living at my parents
00:19:03
lived there for 2 years I've been
00:19:04
working full-time while in school mind
00:19:07
you I've paid off my old car loan that I
00:19:09
was upside down on I never buy anything
00:19:11
for myself ever I don't do anything and
00:19:13
yet it still gets me nowhere like I'm
00:19:16
looking for houses and every single
00:19:18
house is at least $200,000 and they need
00:19:20
a [ __ ] of work like it just feels like I
00:19:22
am running on a hamster wheel not trying
00:19:24
to be dramatic but it is just so
00:19:26
exhausting I am doing everything I'm
00:19:28
supposed to I'm paying off debt I'm
00:19:29
living well below my means yet I still
00:19:33
feel like I'm exactly where I was four
00:19:35
years ago maybe even worse and so Jen Z
00:19:37
is entering the workforce with no hope
00:19:39
of achieving the American dream so a lot
00:19:41
of them are just living aimlessly not
00:19:43
sure what to strive for it's not that
00:19:45
they don't have goals and Ambitions it's
00:19:47
that they're trying to find alternative
00:19:49
Lifestyles that they can find peace in
00:19:51
when the lifestyle of previous
00:19:52
generations isn't available to them I
00:19:54
think this is something very unique
00:19:56
about genen Z that is being overlooked
00:19:58
that they are the first generation in
00:20:00
quite a few generations to have no hope
00:20:02
for their future the one thing about
00:20:04
growing up in gen Z and I have to say
00:20:05
like of course every generation before
00:20:07
us has had their own things to deal with
00:20:09
while while they were growing up I think
00:20:11
the thing that sucks the most about gen
00:20:12
Z is the fact that like it's like no
00:20:15
matter what we do the world keeps
00:20:17
changing at such like a rapid Pace
00:20:19
making it damn near like unlivable for
00:20:21
us that there's nothing we really can do
00:20:23
you know what I'm saying there's no plan
00:20:24
that's like it's not like how back in
00:20:26
the day was like if you follow this set
00:20:28
plan even if it it doesn't work like
00:20:30
exactly how you want it you'll still be
00:20:32
like in a better off position for us
00:20:34
like G like whether it be like the whole
00:20:35
College thing or just working at 9 to5
00:20:38
or just trying to be your own Bond
00:20:39
trying to go sometime or down some
00:20:41
business route or whatever the case may
00:20:42
be it's like no matter what you do
00:20:45
you're probably still going to get in
00:20:46
the end in some sort of way or fashion
00:20:48
while other Generations have gone
00:20:50
through their fair share of turmoil many
00:20:52
of them preserved hope for their future
00:20:54
or at least for their children's future
00:20:56
with the lack of financial certainty and
00:20:58
the climate crisis going on genzi just
00:21:01
doesn't have that and people aren't
00:21:03
recognizing the role that Hope plays for
00:21:05
a generation to thrive in this article
00:21:07
from the Princeton University press they
00:21:09
talk about the importance of hope
00:21:10
there's increasing evidence that the
00:21:12
most important dimension of well-being
00:21:14
to Future outcomes is not happiness
00:21:16
although of course it matters but hope
00:21:18
hope is distinct from optimism which is
00:21:20
the belief that things will get better
00:21:22
as it is based on individuals believing
00:21:24
that they can make things better and
00:21:25
reflects agency in contrast people
00:21:28
without hope tend to have miserable life
00:21:30
outcomes people need hope and
00:21:31
aspirations to pursue goals hope feeds
00:21:34
agency and gets people off their butts
00:21:36
because they feel like they actually
00:21:37
have a chance of achieving something and
00:21:39
the research finds that having a mentor
00:21:41
who supports the hopes and aspirations
00:21:43
of the young is a critical factor in
00:21:45
their decisions to invest in their
00:21:47
Futures such as in education and to
00:21:49
avoid risky behaviors which jeopardize
00:21:51
those Futures and this is why genen Z
00:21:53
has been labeled the most nihilistic
00:21:55
generation yet because they're living in
00:21:56
a world with constant crisis and despair
00:21:59
Sophia Agee 23 reflects on this saying
00:22:02
she suspects that her generation may
00:22:04
never own homes accumulate comfortable
00:22:06
retirement savings or achieve other
00:22:08
traditional Financial Milestones so it's
00:22:10
interesting that older Generations are
00:22:12
on Jen's case about not being better
00:22:14
participants of society when jenzi
00:22:17
thinks that they'll be a homeless
00:22:18
pension and under 6 feet of water by the
00:22:20
time their retirement age and this also
00:22:22
plays into Jen's lack of trust and
00:22:24
Authority they don't believe that the
00:22:26
government or education system will
00:22:28
solve any of the problems they're
00:22:29
dealing with and so they don't want to
00:22:30
play into the system for Gen Z trust in
00:22:33
institutions is at an all-time low in
00:22:35
the US young people feel their
00:22:36
government hasn't earned their trust
00:22:38
older Generations haven't earned their
00:22:40
trust whether that's in regard to
00:22:42
climate gun reform police reform young
00:22:44
people feel they are not being listened
00:22:46
to without this trust that the people
00:22:48
with the power to change will actually
00:22:50
change anything jenzi is left to figure
00:22:53
it out on their own on top of that I
00:22:54
think it's interesting to know that this
00:22:56
is happening to the least religious
00:22:58
gener generation as that plays into
00:22:59
their Ambitions as well Pew research
00:23:01
repeatedly found that jenzi is the
00:23:03
nation's least religious generation with
00:23:06
about a third having no religion about
00:23:08
the same proportion among Millennials
00:23:10
compared to 23% 177% and 11% among
00:23:13
respectively Gen X Baby Boomers and the
00:23:16
silent generation during trying times
00:23:18
people have always had their religion to
00:23:20
fall back on to give them hope and genz
00:23:22
doesn't even have that I won't go too
00:23:24
deep into the world of religion I just
00:23:26
find it interesting that jenz seemingly
00:23:28
has all their Stars aligned to have no
00:23:30
drive for their future Also to clarify
00:23:32
this of course isn't to say that there
00:23:34
aren't some genz who have aspirations
00:23:37
just overall as a generation they don't
00:23:39
have a lot of incentive to pull
00:23:41
themselves up from their bootstraps when
00:23:42
they don't have anywhere to go once
00:23:44
their boots are
00:23:49
on so how does a generation with no
00:23:52
value of education and no motivation AC
00:23:55
in the workforce I think it's
00:23:57
complicated so far gen Z has a pretty
00:23:59
bad reputation of being difficult to
00:24:01
work with to the point that it's
00:24:02
affecting the hiring patterns of
00:24:04
employers so you say right now you just
00:24:06
won't hire gen Z employees no we don't
00:24:11
it's been a nightmare with 95% of the
00:24:13
ones that we have hired I once
00:24:15
terminated an employee and her father
00:24:17
called me 24 hours later asking how he
00:24:20
could help get his daughter's job back
00:24:22
i' never heard of that before when I've
00:24:24
lost my job I didn't tell my parents to
00:24:27
go call for me 2024 resume genius asked
00:24:30
625 us hiring managers which generation
00:24:34
is the most challenging to work with the
00:24:36
results found that just as Boomers had
00:24:38
concerns about Millennials Jen Z is now
00:24:40
encountering similar criticism nearly
00:24:43
half of hiring managers named jenz as
00:24:45
the most challenging generation to work
00:24:47
with even 45% of jenz hiring managers
00:24:50
share the same sentiment a millennial
00:24:52
manager said there's nothing quite as
00:24:53
humbling as receiving applications from
00:24:56
gen Z job applicants Amy G man owner of
00:24:59
a uk-based vegan bakery says she posted
00:25:01
a job opening for a baking assistant and
00:25:03
Barista she received an influx of
00:25:05
applications mostly from Jen's ears and
00:25:07
was flabbergasted at the lack of
00:25:09
professionalism she found she noticed
00:25:11
things like people not using a single
00:25:13
capital letter on a resume Apparently
00:25:15
one applicant even said I'm having a
00:25:17
brat summer on a job application this
00:25:19
head of HR gave their reasoning saying
00:25:22
in our organization the genz I have
00:25:24
interacted with can be exhausting
00:25:26
because of their lack of discipline and
00:25:28
they like to challenge you they think
00:25:30
they're better than you smarter than you
00:25:32
more capable than you and they will tell
00:25:33
you to your face I just got home from a
00:25:35
job interview and they said that I'm not
00:25:37
going to get it cuz it wasn't just
00:25:39
appropriately for the
00:25:42
interview I'm giving
00:25:44
business in my little slack skirt and my
00:25:47
look at my
00:25:51
side anyways the skirt is thrifted and
00:25:54
the top is from mixed fashion now
00:25:56
despite this being pretty incriminate in
00:25:58
evidence gen Z hasn't always had this
00:26:00
reputation up until a few years ago the
00:26:02
work ethic news was positive for Gen Z
00:26:05
after declining from Boomers to
00:26:06
Millennials work ethic made a comeback
00:26:08
among gen Z in the 2010s until it didn't
00:26:11
the number of 18-year-olds who said they
00:26:13
wanted to do their best in their job
00:26:14
even if it sometimes means working
00:26:16
overtime suddenly plummeted in 2021 and
00:26:19
2022 in early 2020 54% of 18-year-olds
00:26:23
said that they were willing to work
00:26:24
overtime by 2022 it was only 36% now the
00:26:27
reason I like this section till now is
00:26:29
because we needed the context of the
00:26:31
lacking and overpriced education system
00:26:33
mixed with the lost American Dream to
00:26:35
realize why gen Z has a different
00:26:37
perspective on careers as we know
00:26:39
Generations prior were sold the story
00:26:41
that if you work hard and put your time
00:26:42
in you'll have a bright future and jenz
00:26:45
isn't getting that same opportunity as
00:26:47
the economy has changed post-pandemic
00:26:48
jenz has less belief that the work
00:26:51
required to succeed in their careers
00:26:53
will be worth the effort all of this is
00:26:55
made up things that we force ourselves
00:26:57
to do just to do something that not a
00:27:00
lot of this is real and they don't
00:27:01
necessarily have poor work ethics they
00:27:03
just know that none of it really matters
00:27:05
this is the generation that grew up not
00:27:07
knowing if they were going to come home
00:27:08
from school seeing economic promises
00:27:10
ripped away from them knowing that
00:27:11
things that were once guarantees for
00:27:13
them if they did everything right that
00:27:15
doesn't matter anymore so I personally
00:27:16
don't blame them for being a little
00:27:18
disaffected and for not playing into the
00:27:20
whole system of like jobs are everything
00:27:22
this is purpose not only are
00:27:24
18-year-olds less focused on worth
00:27:26
they're less likely to expect they will
00:27:28
enjoy it in the 2000s Millennial 12th
00:27:30
graders were more likely than Boomers
00:27:32
were in the 1970s to expect that their
00:27:34
Future Chosen work would be extremely
00:27:37
satisfying but in 2022 only 59% thought
00:27:40
their career would be extremely
00:27:41
satisfying a 23% drop and another
00:27:44
all-time low as the years have passed
00:27:46
young adults are less likely to work
00:27:47
overtime less likely to enjoy their work
00:27:50
and less likely to just have work be the
00:27:52
center of their lives they've seen
00:27:54
Boomers work their entire lives working
00:27:56
at one company just to be dropped when
00:27:58
that employee isn't convenient anymore
00:28:00
they've seen Millennials work their way
00:28:02
up the corporate ladder and still not be
00:28:04
able to pay off their student loans and
00:28:05
then they look at their own Futures and
00:28:07
see that even if they work the overtime
00:28:09
hours get the extra certificates and
00:28:11
Claw their way up the corporate ladder
00:28:13
they still won't achieve the same
00:28:14
standard of living that their parents
00:28:16
had so I'm just supposed to sit here for
00:28:19
40 hours a week for the next 45 years of
00:28:23
my life only if you live for 45 more
00:28:27
years gen Z is burnt out even before
00:28:30
they've entered the workforce the thing
00:28:31
that motivated people to work hard and
00:28:34
stay at a company was the prospect of
00:28:36
buying a humble home having a wife and
00:28:38
kids or husband and kids owning a nice
00:28:41
car and maybe going on a little vacation
00:28:43
jenzy with their hyper awareness of the
00:28:45
world they live in aren't able to make
00:28:47
the same sacrifices and have the same
00:28:49
slice of cake at the end and this is why
00:28:51
we saw the I don't dream of Labor Trend
00:28:54
in 2021 I have a job interview in like
00:28:56
15 minutes and
00:28:58
I just want to say that I hate this I
00:29:00
hate having to be professional and dress
00:29:03
professional
00:29:05
and talking about things that I like
00:29:07
barely care about I don't want to work I
00:29:09
want to read and I want to read so much
00:29:12
that I forget to nourish myself and then
00:29:15
I die reading because at least I'll die
00:29:18
doing what I love and not having to
00:29:20
slave
00:29:21
away uh serving the corporate machine
00:29:24
now I feel like this trend was overall
00:29:26
net positive because because it's
00:29:28
totally normal for people to not love
00:29:30
their 9 to-5 job and to just work so
00:29:33
that they can live their lives but it
00:29:34
did feel like this was a shocking
00:29:36
concept when it came out because it was
00:29:38
in direct contrast with the messaging
00:29:40
Millennials grew up with being very
00:29:42
career focused and that your career
00:29:44
should be your identity it was also in
00:29:46
direct contrast with other Generations
00:29:49
mindset of loyalty to a company trumping
00:29:51
everything and so jenzi is just trying
00:29:53
to figure out what their new path is and
00:29:55
for a lot of them it just looks like
00:29:56
prioritizing a healthy work life balance
00:29:59
if work isn't going to give you the
00:30:00
dream life you thought you would have
00:30:01
then at least let's enjoy the dayto day
00:30:04
while we have it this looks like drawing
00:30:06
hard lines with overtime hours using the
00:30:08
vacation days that are offered to you
00:30:10
taking mental health days when you need
00:30:12
it and just not working more than you're
00:30:14
being paid for I honestly think you
00:30:16
can't hate on them for that but that's
00:30:17
my opinion I've talked about this before
00:30:19
but I had a similar experience when I
00:30:21
was working the corporate life I was
00:30:23
working away doing just the work they
00:30:24
were paying me for and got reprimanded
00:30:27
for it I was told I need to come in
00:30:29
before my start time and to not be
00:30:31
afraid of staying late if I wanted to
00:30:33
advance in the workplace and I was
00:30:35
having none of that so I left that work
00:30:37
environment was not for me with that
00:30:39
maybe I'm a little biased towards jenzie
00:30:41
I feel like the best case scenario here
00:30:43
is that with all the effort jenzie is
00:30:45
putting into having a better work life
00:30:47
balance maybe it will result in
00:30:49
companies offering more perks like
00:30:51
higher salaries more vacation days maybe
00:30:53
more flexible schedules these young
00:30:55
workers are seeing through the guise of
00:30:57
The Prestige of working at a high status
00:30:59
company and won't be walked over because
00:31:01
of it gen Z does not want to go into an
00:31:04
office because there's a pool table
00:31:06
there I think my favorite part about
00:31:08
this is how we were taught for years
00:31:11
from middle school all the way up to
00:31:13
college about how fun and cool it would
00:31:15
be to work at Google right it's so
00:31:18
creative and then genen Z turns around
00:31:20
and we go okay but how much you paying
00:31:22
us trillion and billion dollar
00:31:25
corporations spent years building these
00:31:28
spaces that Millennials and Gen X just
00:31:31
ate up and gen Z's like I would rather
00:31:34
work in a box on the street if it means
00:31:36
you pay me 30% more rather than working
00:31:39
in one of these psychologically hacking
00:31:41
buildings our girl Phoebe Lee went on to
00:31:44
say as the months passed I really came
00:31:46
to understand the term Corporation more
00:31:48
often than not a company's objective is
00:31:50
not for you to grow for you to learn or
00:31:52
even to make the world a better place
00:31:54
its primary objective is to maximize
00:31:56
shareholder value the people who have
00:31:58
large ownership in the companies are
00:32:00
made even richer I couldn't help but
00:32:02
think how I had reached such high levels
00:32:04
of education and learned to solve such
00:32:06
complex problems just to be toiling away
00:32:08
with repetitive work as a tiny gear in a
00:32:10
machine that all but likely does not
00:32:12
make any positive contributions to the
00:32:14
world but while it's great that jenzy is
00:32:15
pushing for a better work environment
00:32:17
than the traditional work until you die
00:32:19
mindset of previous generations still
00:32:22
not everyone's having positive
00:32:23
experiences with them and unfortunately
00:32:25
as much as I want to leave things on
00:32:27
that high note there's another side to
00:32:28
this aside from jenzi just wanting to
00:32:30
make the workplace healthier I've heard
00:32:32
a lot of employers say that jenz are in
00:32:35
fact bad workers personally I feel like
00:32:37
a lot of this comes from the modern
00:32:39
school system and how it's a drastic
00:32:42
change moving from that to the work
00:32:43
environment and specifically the way
00:32:46
discipline is handled in schools
00:32:47
children used to be held to Expectations
00:32:49
by their teachers and parents and had to
00:32:52
follow the expectations of school to get
00:32:54
through it now with the fears of
00:32:55
children falling behind there's a lot
00:32:57
more handholding and teachers don't have
00:32:59
the same abilities to keep kids in line
00:33:02
anymore one of the things that pisses me
00:33:03
off more than anything these days is the
00:33:04
state of the education system in North
00:33:06
America and the state of the education
00:33:07
system right now is scary kids are
00:33:09
falling behind kids are falling very
00:33:11
behind you're seeing kids under high
00:33:12
school with barely a fourth grade skill
00:33:14
set there's that whole concept of no kid
00:33:16
Left Behind the no kid Left Behind
00:33:17
program which really just leaves every
00:33:19
kid behind we stopped letting kids being
00:33:21
able to be held back a grade so you're
00:33:24
having a kid who can barely pass grade
00:33:26
one skills just being push to grade two
00:33:28
because you can't hold them back who do
00:33:29
you think that's benefiting absolutely
00:33:32
no one and it happens at every level we
00:33:35
have it happening at the very basic
00:33:37
level of elementary school where these
00:33:39
kids can barely function at the grade
00:33:41
that they're at and yet they're being
00:33:42
pushed on which is just setting them up
00:33:44
for failure and at the higher end in
00:33:45
high school even when I was in high
00:33:47
school 10 years ago you have teachers
00:33:50
bumping grades so that kids can get into
00:33:52
University well what do you think that
00:33:54
does that just raises the acceptance
00:33:55
average the acceptance averages for
00:33:57
University go up and up and up and up
00:33:59
every year and it's not because kids are
00:34:01
getting smarter it's because their
00:34:02
grades are being artificially inflated
00:34:04
because instead of students just being
00:34:06
told they should work harder they should
00:34:08
study more in order to get into these
00:34:10
programs they're just being handed it
00:34:11
what is grade inflation they all expect
00:34:14
they to get a no matter what but years
00:34:16
ago it wasn't like that I've been
00:34:18
teaching for almost 40 years and I feel
00:34:20
a lot of pressure on myself to give the
00:34:23
students at least to see even if they're
00:34:26
not doing adequate amount of work at
00:34:28
least where I live kidss are no longer
00:34:30
forced to fail grades if they are
00:34:32
failing a grade the BC Ministry of
00:34:35
Education says report cards are to
00:34:37
communicate student learning to families
00:34:39
and are not intended as a tool to
00:34:41
provide information to Future teachers
00:34:43
about a student there are no
00:34:45
prerequisites for any BC course and
00:34:47
awarding an F in a grade or course does
00:34:49
not prevent a student from moving up to
00:34:51
the next grade or course and so it's up
00:34:52
to the parents to decide if a child will
00:34:54
be held back because of poor performance
00:34:57
and a lot of the time parents won't hold
00:34:59
their child back because they don't want
00:35:00
them falling behind their classmates
00:35:02
teachers are also very limited in the
00:35:04
discipline they can use in schools and
00:35:05
therefore aren't able to teach those
00:35:07
skills required for the workplace and
00:35:09
this is not to say we need to bring the
00:35:10
ruler back but if there aren't
00:35:12
consequences for failing to meet
00:35:14
standards then kids are going to have a
00:35:15
rude awakening when they enter the
00:35:17
workforce and get fired for not turning
00:35:19
in their work on time and these effects
00:35:21
of school have only been Amplified with
00:35:23
genen Z by of course social media
00:35:25
culture where you should always be
00:35:27
prioritizing your your over your work a
00:35:29
snail girl takes a time and creates to
00:35:31
create she's running her own race and
00:35:33
maybe that race isn't going anywhere but
00:35:36
home and back to bed the I don't dream
00:35:38
of Labor trend is healthy when done
00:35:40
right but if it's taken too far to the
00:35:42
point where kids don't think they have
00:35:44
to listen to any Authority in the
00:35:45
workplace it's not going to work out
00:35:47
well for them and so these young people
00:35:49
come into adulthood not sure what
00:35:51
boundaries are okay or are not okay to
00:35:53
push because they're young for example
00:35:55
it's okay to use sick days that are
00:35:57
available to you and not feel bad about
00:35:59
using them but it's not okay to skip out
00:36:01
on work early because you had an
00:36:02
appointment that you didn't tell your
00:36:03
boss about there's isn't even a fine
00:36:05
line there's a line there I don't think
00:36:07
it's that fine I think it's an obvious
00:36:08
line maybe just for us and so I feel
00:36:10
like there's a bit of Truth on both
00:36:12
sides of this conflict where jenzie is
00:36:14
doing a good job standing up for
00:36:16
themselves in the workforce but some of
00:36:18
them just aren't doing it
00:36:20
[Music]
00:36:23
right so to end things off do I think
00:36:26
jenz is just a drain on the system and
00:36:28
won't amount to anything obviously not I
00:36:31
think jenzie is just adapting to a bad
00:36:33
hand given to them relative bad hand but
00:36:36
still a bad hand and they're trying to
00:36:37
make the most of it while the push back
00:36:39
against schooling is a bit extreme there
00:36:41
is some validity to it as we've
00:36:43
discussed there's a lot of problems the
00:36:45
good news is we are seeing some Creative
00:36:46
Solutions I recently heard that Jordan
00:36:49
Peterson is creating his own University
00:36:51
that is supposed to be more affordable
00:36:53
like very affordable and whether you
00:36:55
love him or hate him I don't care it's
00:36:57
just cool to see people trying to come
00:36:59
up with new solutions to these really
00:37:01
big problems that seem insurmountable I
00:37:03
do think there are still some issues
00:37:05
with Jen's work ethic overall not
00:37:08
everyone we're not trying to group
00:37:10
everyone together here but my hope is
00:37:12
that those problems will be ironed out
00:37:13
as jenz spends more time in the
00:37:15
workforce and learns those boundaries
00:37:17
that they can't push and like I said
00:37:19
hopefully this push back on the status
00:37:20
quo will in the end benefit everyone I
00:37:23
also need to note as per usual now is
00:37:25
your time to subscribe if you enjoy en
00:37:27
video essays on Parenthood culture and
00:37:30
Community that's what I like talking
00:37:31
about sometimes other things depends on
00:37:34
what I'm feeling and they come out once
00:37:35
a month so if you're not subscribed you
00:37:37
might miss it as for the ending of this
00:37:38
video I think it's important to remember
00:37:40
that everyone's a product of their
00:37:42
environment and jenz is just adapting to
00:37:45
the environment they inherited they may
00:37:47
have their problems but they do also
00:37:48
bring fresh perspectives that can help
00:37:50
reimagine and strengthen the societal
00:37:53
Foundation laid by the previous
00:37:55
generations
00:37:57
hey hey man do do you have a second to
00:37:59
uh to talk I was just calling to let you
00:38:01
know that I'm Giving Up Wait like on
00:38:03
your career and future and everything
00:38:05
yeah I doe everything I'm just going to
00:38:07
expect the worst in all aspects of my
00:38:09
life from here on out oh my
00:38:12
God I'm proud of you thank you you're
00:38:15
like the first person I've told like I
00:38:17
knew you'd want to know cuz you've just
00:38:18
been encouraging me to throw in the
00:38:20
towel for so long I'm glad you're
00:38:22
telling me right now that means a lot
00:38:24
yeah dude I'm like it still doesn't feel
00:38:26
real
