so guys this may be a longer video and
  • 00:00:14
it's going to have different sections
  • 00:00:16
so within those different sections we're
  • 00:00:18
    going to have
  • 00:00:19
    you know
  • 00:00:20
how do we set up the camera
  • 00:00:22
how do we use it in the field how do we
  • 00:00:24
take the images off the camera to put it
  • 00:00:26
on the laptop or a computer whatever
  • 00:00:28
    you've got
  • 00:00:29
how do we open those images up how do we
  • 00:00:32
look at them how do we extract them
  • 00:00:35
and all that stuff so use the chapters
  • 00:00:38
that are in the videos so if you you
  • 00:00:40
already know how to set it up but you
  • 00:00:41
want to know how to extract it just jump
  • 00:00:43
to the parts it's extracting i'd rather
  • 00:00:45
you watch the whole video it helps me
  • 00:00:46
out as far as metrics go for the channel
  • 00:00:48
but if you need to jump ahead just jump
  • 00:00:50
ahead to the section you need to jump
  • 00:00:51
ahead of hey everyone welcome back to
  • 00:00:53
the channel today we're looking at the
  • 00:00:54
raw burst mode feature on the canon r7
  • 00:00:57
    which is the pre shutter
  • 00:01:00
    activation
  • 00:01:01
half second capture of images before you
  • 00:01:03
    hit the the button
  • 00:01:05
it's not after you let off the button
  • 00:01:07
only before you hit the button so
  • 00:01:08
remember that so you're not going to get
  • 00:01:10
that little tail that you may have
  • 00:01:11
missed you're going to get the stuff
  • 00:01:12
before your shutter button so we'll
  • 00:01:14
    discuss all that and
  • 00:01:16
    let's get into it
  • 00:01:19
one question i'd like to ask you guys
  • 00:01:20
before we get rolling on this in the
  • 00:01:22
    comment section
  • 00:01:24
    is
  • 00:01:25
i'm doing a lot of these um how to's and
  • 00:01:28
stuff like that which i love doing but i
  • 00:01:30
also do like in the field uh photo
  • 00:01:33
    adventures so
  • 00:01:34
you know if you've seen some of my
  • 00:01:36
videos tell me what you like or don't
  • 00:01:37
like about those or what you would like
  • 00:01:39
to see when i'm out doing photo ventures
  • 00:01:42
pretty soon i'm fixing to go out and do
  • 00:01:44
    coastal bears along
  • 00:01:47
on kodiak and on the other side of kodi
  • 00:01:50
accolade clark and places like that
  • 00:01:52
and other things that i'll be going out
  • 00:01:54
and doing and we're going to
  • 00:01:55
above the arctic circle to go see if we
  • 00:01:57
can find up there to take photographs of
  • 00:02:00
uh but yeah just leave me some comments
  • 00:02:01
tell me what you guys think what would
  • 00:02:02
make it better what would uh you know
  • 00:02:05
what you guys like to see
  • 00:02:06
so anyway let's get into this camera
  • 00:02:09
all right so let's get into the settings
  • 00:02:11
on the camera and how we set up in the
  • 00:02:13
    menu the robber shooting mode
  • 00:02:16
so first thing we do is hit the menu
  • 00:02:17
    button
  • 00:02:18
we're going to go to the very first icon
  • 00:02:20
in here which is a red menu it's the
  • 00:02:22
    camera
  • 00:02:23
setting and we're going to go down to
  • 00:02:25
    tab 6
  • 00:02:26
and we're going to scroll down to raw
  • 00:02:28
burst mode we're going to hit our set
  • 00:02:30
    button
  • 00:02:31
that's going to bring up where we do
  • 00:02:32
disable or enable the raw burst mode
  • 00:02:35
let's hit the set button again let's
  • 00:02:37
    enable it
  • 00:02:39
so now that robust mode is enabled where
  • 00:02:42
we will have this new setting where we
  • 00:02:43
can do the pre shutter thing
  • 00:02:45
    pre-shooting menu
  • 00:02:47
what that does is you can enable and
  • 00:02:49
disable it by default when you open
  • 00:02:51
    start this it enables it
  • 00:02:53
if you disable it you won't get the half
  • 00:02:55
second prior to your shutter button
  • 00:02:59
what this is going to do is going to put
  • 00:03:00
these images in what they call a roll
  • 00:03:03
    so r-o-l-l dot r-o-l-e
  • 00:03:06
and those images are going to be one cr3
  • 00:03:09
for how many rmg you shot if you shot 10
  • 00:03:11
20 50 600 it's going to be in one roll
  • 00:03:14
for that burst you took so now we got
  • 00:03:16
that set up that is all we have to do
  • 00:03:19
what does this do when this happens
  • 00:03:21
    elsewhere in this menu
  • 00:03:22
so once you go into the raw burst mode
  • 00:03:26
it only records raw images not c-raw raw
  • 00:03:29
or jpeg you can only do this in raw
  • 00:03:32
so from here in the raw burst mode
  • 00:03:34
let's go over to our drive function so
  • 00:03:37
the first thing you'll see on menu one
  • 00:03:39
your image quality is you can't change
  • 00:03:41
it which is your jpeg and your raws
  • 00:03:43
because it's going to be raw only
  • 00:03:46
the next thing it's going to change your
  • 00:03:47
exposure compensation is going to go
  • 00:03:49
    away because whatever your first
  • 00:03:51
exposure you hit is going to stick
  • 00:03:53
and we're going to get down here to
  • 00:03:56
color space is going to be locked again
  • 00:03:57
because whatever you started with is
  • 00:03:59
what's going to be on here
  • 00:04:04
    where is it
  • 00:04:06
    drive mode here we go
  • 00:04:07
so you'll notice your drive modes are
  • 00:04:09
    grayed out
  • 00:04:10
because it's only going to let you shoot
  • 00:04:12
an h plus it's only gonna let you shoot
  • 00:04:14
30 frames a second in this raw burst
  • 00:04:16
    mode because it's raw burst
  • 00:04:18
so those are things you got to remember
  • 00:04:19
when you go into this mode you're going
  • 00:04:20
to be in raw and you're going to be in
  • 00:04:22
    30 frames per second
  • 00:04:24
    so just remember that
  • 00:04:26
let's talk about how do we use this in
  • 00:04:29
the field so in the field when you're
  • 00:04:32
running this camera with this raw burst
  • 00:04:34
    mode on
  • 00:04:36
you hold the shutter button down
  • 00:04:38
    for
  • 00:04:39
just halfway push it down and that's
  • 00:04:41
going to engage that pre-buffer fill up
  • 00:04:44
and what you'll see on the on your
  • 00:04:46
little the little bar over there it'll
  • 00:04:47
be white it'll try it it'll fill up a
  • 00:04:49
little bit and go just at the bottom
  • 00:04:50
white what that's telling you is the
  • 00:04:53
    buffer's
  • 00:04:54
churning it's ready to go so if you hit
  • 00:04:56
that shutter button and you've got you
  • 00:04:58
know you've had that white for a half
  • 00:04:59
    second
  • 00:05:01
    it will
  • 00:05:02
give you that half second of shots prior
  • 00:05:04
to the shutter button if you're not
  • 00:05:05
holding that down halfway and you hit
  • 00:05:07
the shutter you're not going to get a
  • 00:05:09
    pre shutter button clicks because
  • 00:05:11
there's nothing in the buffer to take a
  • 00:05:13
    picture of
  • 00:05:14
    if you're feathering
  • 00:05:17
    taking pictures
  • 00:05:18
    you're going to get
  • 00:05:20
say you feather five times you're gonna
  • 00:05:22
get five cr3s with how many files for
  • 00:05:25
each one of those feathers so if you had
  • 00:05:28
10 shots in the first feather you're
  • 00:05:29
going to have 10 in that roll if you had
  • 00:05:30
20 the next you have 20 and so on
  • 00:05:33
and it's not a bad thing but you're
  • 00:05:35
going to have to go through each of
  • 00:05:36
those cr3s to extract it through
  • 00:05:39
    the software
  • 00:05:41
so if you let off the button when you
  • 00:05:43
have the half second press it's going to
  • 00:05:45
go red and all that's telling you is
  • 00:05:47
    it's flushing that buffer out
  • 00:05:49
and while it's still red if you hold it
  • 00:05:51
down for a half second it's not going to
  • 00:05:52
be filling the buffer up until the red
  • 00:05:54
goes away so you got to watch that red
  • 00:05:55
once it flushes you can hold it for a
  • 00:05:57
half second again if you've got
  • 00:05:59
something fast going on and it's it's
  • 00:06:01
just flushing that buffer for after you
  • 00:06:02
did half second you can still take a
  • 00:06:04
    picture
  • 00:06:05
it's just not going to do anything pre
  • 00:06:06
    to that spot
  • 00:06:08
once that red goes away that that
  • 00:06:10
buffer's flush you can half press down
  • 00:06:11
for half second it's going to start
  • 00:06:13
    filling up the buffer again
  • 00:06:15
so that's how that pre-shot buffer works
  • 00:06:19
now hold the buffer down for half second
  • 00:06:22
    you do your shot
  • 00:06:24
and it'll say you just want to hammer it
  • 00:06:25
to get all the shots you can which i was
  • 00:06:27
doing when i was recording this on in
  • 00:06:29
    the field
  • 00:06:31
it'll go red once that bar it'll go
  • 00:06:33
green as you hold hit the button the
  • 00:06:35
shutter down then it'll go up there when
  • 00:06:37
it hits red that means that buffer is
  • 00:06:39
full and it's got a flush before you can
  • 00:06:41
take the next picture what's kind of
  • 00:06:43
cool though you can see it flushing out
  • 00:06:44
    the
  • 00:06:45
buffer and you know when you can hit the
  • 00:06:47
    thing again
  • 00:06:49
    when you're
  • 00:06:50
not in this mode and you're shooting
  • 00:06:52
normally and you hit the buffer it just
  • 00:06:54
says busy and blinks and then
  • 00:06:56
    it actually clears pretty fast
  • 00:06:59
when you're normally shooting it depends
  • 00:07:00
on what you're shooting there so
  • 00:07:02
    not too bad
  • 00:07:04
and once that buffer flushes once it
  • 00:07:06
gets out or not when you actually take
  • 00:07:08
the picture after the buffer flushes
  • 00:07:10
then you can go in and take your next
  • 00:07:11
    set of pictures
  • 00:07:13
and that's pretty much how it works
  • 00:07:15
so the next thing is how do you review
  • 00:07:17
when you know you took that shot and you
  • 00:07:19
want to review it when you go on the
  • 00:07:20
camera so of course you got to hit the
  • 00:07:22
little play icon to review your pictures
  • 00:07:24
and when you're going to review your
  • 00:07:26
pictures what you're going to see when
  • 00:07:28
you did that shot you're going to see
  • 00:07:30
one file in there it's going to say one
  • 00:07:32
so let's say you did the
  • 00:07:35
    three times you did the
  • 00:07:37
shots on this with the raw burst mode
  • 00:07:39
you're only going to see three files in
  • 00:07:40
there and each of those files is going
  • 00:07:42
to contain the number of images you took
  • 00:07:44
    during that burst
  • 00:07:46
so what all you do is you hit the set
  • 00:07:48
button which is our select button which
  • 00:07:50
is going to open up that camera roll and
  • 00:07:51
then you can look through it
  • 00:07:53
and what you're going to see you're
  • 00:07:54
going to see a yellow icon in there a
  • 00:07:56
little on the bar of all the images
  • 00:07:58
it'll say like 16 of 32 or something
  • 00:08:02
and then what that means is
  • 00:08:05
you had 15 shots prior to
  • 00:08:08
that shot and that's that pre-burst so
  • 00:08:10
everything left that yellow is what
  • 00:08:12
happened before you hit the shutter
  • 00:08:14
which is really cool so you're getting
  • 00:08:15
half second you're getting 15 shots
  • 00:08:17
    right there
  • 00:08:18
and then everything after that is what
  • 00:08:20
you would have captured if you weren't
  • 00:08:21
using this mode if you just hit the
  • 00:08:22
    button
  • 00:08:23
so it's really neat to see and even
  • 00:08:25
myself couple times i thought oh i got
  • 00:08:28
it i hit it you know i've got a little
  • 00:08:29
bit before but i for sure got the action
  • 00:08:31
i wanted when i hit the thing
  • 00:08:33
and as we get to the end i'll tell you
  • 00:08:35
did i hit it or did the pre-burst you
  • 00:08:38
know the pre got the pre-burst to
  • 00:08:39
    actually capture what i was
  • 00:08:42
    hoping to capture so
  • 00:08:44
that's kind of how we use it in the
  • 00:08:45
field and to review your images
  • 00:08:48
now let's get into how do we take the
  • 00:08:50
images off this or column and then put
  • 00:08:53
it on the computer now you can do
  • 00:08:55
    every bit of your
  • 00:08:58
pre-whatever you can even edit images in
  • 00:09:00
    these cameras
  • 00:09:01
you can call your images you can
  • 00:09:04
do all that fun stuff you can go into
  • 00:09:06
    this
  • 00:09:07
and extract out of the role each image
  • 00:09:09
that you want to extract into an area to
  • 00:09:11
    save it
  • 00:09:12
you can go into that role and you could
  • 00:09:14
even lock items or favorite items or
  • 00:09:17
even star each one of them
  • 00:09:19
and i've got friends that they do
  • 00:09:21
everything in this camera prior to going
  • 00:09:23
    to
  • 00:09:24
the laptop i don't work that way i
  • 00:09:27
    capture all the images here
  • 00:09:29
i may review in the field
  • 00:09:31
and then i go ahead and take the
  • 00:09:33
    card out of the
  • 00:09:34
camera and the cool thing about these
  • 00:09:37
new m1 mac laptops is they have an sd
  • 00:09:40
    card reader in it
  • 00:09:41
    and uh they're pretty fast
  • 00:09:44
    now i
  • 00:09:46
have already pulled these off and put
  • 00:09:47
    them on the computer
  • 00:09:49
so i'm just going to put this back on my
  • 00:09:50
camera so i don't forget it because i
  • 00:09:52
did the other day and i had to use a
  • 00:09:53
    normal v30
  • 00:09:54
now the cool thing about the v30 card it
  • 00:09:56
worked pretty good it was quicker to
  • 00:09:58
fill up the buffer when you're hitting
  • 00:09:59
    30 frames a second you're just rattling
  • 00:10:01
on it but feathering it still worked
  • 00:10:03
pretty good a couple times when i was
  • 00:10:04
feathering with that v30 i hit the
  • 00:10:06
buffer so you've got to be a little more
  • 00:10:07
    careful because it's slower card
  • 00:10:09
all right so now once you've got your
  • 00:10:12
images on your laptop and i put mine on
  • 00:10:15
a sandisk ssd all my images and videos
  • 00:10:20
and you put them on there and then all
  • 00:10:21
you do is you're going to open up
  • 00:10:23
digital photo professional 4. right now
  • 00:10:25
that's all i know that will open these
  • 00:10:28
up besides the camera for extracting the
  • 00:10:30
images out of the role to ones you want
  • 00:10:34
and i'll put a link in here where to get
  • 00:10:36
the digital photo professional for from
  • 00:10:38
canon it's a european linked site and it
  • 00:10:41
basically it says pick your camera
  • 00:10:43
    there's no r7 list just pick an r5 r6
  • 00:10:46
    it'll be fine
  • 00:10:47
    and then
  • 00:10:49
    download whatever operating system you
  • 00:10:51
have mac or windows and do all that fun
  • 00:10:53
stuff then download it install it
  • 00:10:55
    once you're in digital photo
  • 00:10:56
professional 4 it did ask me to uh pull
  • 00:11:01
down the profile so the r7 profile is
  • 00:11:03
already ready for the digital photo
  • 00:11:04
    professional for
  • 00:11:06
now once you've got your images
  • 00:11:09
on the your laptop you've got them on
  • 00:11:11
your drive or whatever all you do is
  • 00:11:12
    open up photo professional form
  • 00:11:14
navigate to the folder where your items
  • 00:11:17
are located and then you have your
  • 00:11:19
    images
  • 00:11:20
and you'll see each one of these has
  • 00:11:22
this little icon this little r icon
  • 00:11:23
that's on every one of these guys mr lar
  • 00:11:26
that tells you this is a roll
  • 00:11:28
    and i don't think and right now here's a
  • 00:11:30
movie so it doesn't have the r on it i
  • 00:11:32
don't but i don't have any single shots
  • 00:11:34
    because this whole
  • 00:11:35
set of images were all the you know all
  • 00:11:37
i shot that afternoon was these rolls so
  • 00:11:41
so i will tell you guys i can't wait
  • 00:11:44
till i'm using this r7 more to record
  • 00:11:46
myself uh the video is phenomenal on the
  • 00:11:48
r5 but that recording time just caught
  • 00:11:51
    me again
  • 00:11:52
that is a bit annoying at that 30 minute
  • 00:11:54
    marker
  • 00:11:55
so what you'll notice in this bottom
  • 00:11:56
right corner is this r in each of these
  • 00:11:58
pictures tells you this is a roll which
  • 00:12:00
means it has multiple pictures per
  • 00:12:02
it will not open in lightroom it will
  • 00:12:04
not work it won't open in anything this
  • 00:12:06
    single cr3 as it sits
  • 00:12:08
you have to actually extract these
  • 00:12:10
images each individually to see those
  • 00:12:13
    items
  • 00:12:14
in those other programs but as it sits
  • 00:12:16
right now it tries to open and goes i
  • 00:12:17
    don't there's too much stuff it doesn't
  • 00:12:19
know what to do with it so lightroom
  • 00:12:20
gives you an error dxo dxo gives you an
  • 00:12:22
error already for our seven images but
  • 00:12:24
it won't open in anything so you have to
  • 00:12:26
open it up in this digital photo
  • 00:12:28
professional four or you have to extract
  • 00:12:29
them each individually from the camera
  • 00:12:31
to the computer or to a file
  • 00:12:34
so let's get into what these images how
  • 00:12:37
the pre-burst looks when you get the
  • 00:12:38
computer this one is some tree swallows
  • 00:12:40
    that were on a box
  • 00:12:42
how do you open it how do you open this
  • 00:12:44
burst step to see all the images you
  • 00:12:46
have to go up here to the menu bar up
  • 00:12:47
top and you got to click tools
  • 00:12:49
from tools you're going to go down to
  • 00:12:51
    start raw burst image tool
  • 00:12:54
    click that
  • 00:12:55
and now it's going to open up that image
  • 00:12:58
with all its things all its
  • 00:13:00
separate images so you'll see down here
  • 00:13:02
    at the bottom
  • 00:13:04
    it says 16 of 53.
  • 00:13:07
so what does that tell you we are
  • 00:13:08
sitting with this little flag right here
  • 00:13:10
which has blue line this little flag
  • 00:13:12
    this dot
  • 00:13:13
this is the 16th image in the roll
  • 00:13:16
everything prior to 15 shots prior to
  • 00:13:18
    this are the
  • 00:13:21
    robbers mode pre-shutter hits
  • 00:13:24
everything after this is where you hit
  • 00:13:27
in this case right here what happened
  • 00:13:29
    was
  • 00:13:30
i was watching these there was more than
  • 00:13:33
one sitting right here on this this
  • 00:13:35
nesting box this is at potter's marks
  • 00:13:37
it's a really cool place you come to
  • 00:13:38
    anchorage
  • 00:13:39
potter's marshmallow place you want to
  • 00:13:40
stop at to go see a lot of migratory
  • 00:13:42
birds and and raptors and things like
  • 00:13:44
that even in the later summer mid-summer
  • 00:13:47
you'll start to see some bears out there
  • 00:13:49
because the salmon come into the creek
  • 00:13:50
so it's a really cool place to visit
  • 00:13:53
    and these
  • 00:13:55
boxes were set up out there out in the
  • 00:13:57
    field over by the boardwalk
  • 00:13:59
and these little tree swallows are in
  • 00:14:01
here nesting so the babies are
  • 00:14:04
i saw a couple flying out but most of
  • 00:14:06
them just had their heads sticking out
  • 00:14:07
of the box so you'll see a few images
  • 00:14:08
    here's a little head sticking out that's
  • 00:14:10
the baby wanting some food so parents
  • 00:14:12
are bringing food back or sitting on top
  • 00:14:14
of the box well i had two here and i was
  • 00:14:16
just holding on it because i'm just
  • 00:14:17
trying to do some examples of
  • 00:14:19
when they take off take the picture can
  • 00:14:21
i capture it and what is the pre-burst
  • 00:14:23
    mode
  • 00:14:24
so you'll see when i hit the shutter the
  • 00:14:25
very first frame i got on this shutter
  • 00:14:27
here's the bird there were two birds
  • 00:14:29
here so i missed them if i go to the
  • 00:14:31
right which is all my shots there goes
  • 00:14:33
    the bird out of frame
  • 00:14:35
gone so all these shots i did it was so
  • 00:14:37
    fast
  • 00:14:38
i held the button down a little longer i
  • 00:14:40
meant to because i'm like oh they moved
  • 00:14:42
hit it and i'm just slamming it so you
  • 00:14:43
kind of you kind of geek out a little
  • 00:14:45
    bit
  • 00:14:46
    now
  • 00:14:47
again two birds i only see one
  • 00:14:50
not these images are not anything i
  • 00:14:52
would go i'm trying to do something
  • 00:14:53
really cool make some cool images i was
  • 00:14:55
just trying to show that the how the
  • 00:14:57
pre-burst the raw burst mode works gotta
  • 00:14:59
    quit saying pre-burst
  • 00:15:00
so let's look at what happened before i
  • 00:15:03
hit the shutters when i hit the shutter
  • 00:15:05
you just saw that you know this is what
  • 00:15:06
happened if the bird flies off
  • 00:15:08
i caught it briefly coming off the post
  • 00:15:11
there but i didn't get you know that was
  • 00:15:13
it where's the other bird you know
  • 00:15:15
there's two here i only see one
  • 00:15:17
and this is what happens a lot of image
  • 00:15:18
    we get there
  • 00:15:19
so let's look at what happens with this
  • 00:15:21
robert new roberts mode on this camera
  • 00:15:23
what did it capture so let's go back in
  • 00:15:25
time let's just go to this well let's
  • 00:15:27
just back up one frame at a time
  • 00:15:29
so prior to that that's where it was
  • 00:15:32
    another one
  • 00:15:34
    by itself
  • 00:15:36
go back again there he is so again it's
  • 00:15:38
30 frames second now we're seeing the
  • 00:15:40
wings of that second bird but now we got
  • 00:15:42
a pretty cool little shot here because
  • 00:15:43
this this is a nice neat little bird
  • 00:15:45
with this wing you know position and
  • 00:15:46
    stuff
  • 00:15:47
let's go one more you start to see the
  • 00:15:49
other bird down at the bottom this one
  • 00:15:51
the top we go one more there's two birds
  • 00:15:53
now so i had to go back
  • 00:15:56
    five frames four frames
  • 00:15:58
to get that second bird we back up again
  • 00:16:02
    here they are going off
  • 00:16:04
so we just go back and these are the
  • 00:16:05
    images we're capturing
  • 00:16:08
    free
  • 00:16:09
i thought i captured maybe here
  • 00:16:13
and i didn't i caught it way back here
  • 00:16:16
you know by the time your brain your
  • 00:16:17
finger hits that delay these birds are
  • 00:16:19
so fast all this stuff in here was due
  • 00:16:22
    to that pre
  • 00:16:24
    buffer shot
  • 00:16:27
just for giggles let's go in and look
  • 00:16:32
that one image that was kind of i
  • 00:16:34
thought was kind of neat let's just zoom
  • 00:16:36
    in on this guy
  • 00:16:38
    now dpp
  • 00:16:40
    takes a second to
  • 00:16:43
read and show you what it's really going
  • 00:16:44
to look like so it's still trying to do
  • 00:16:46
its thing now it's in focus
  • 00:16:48
when you first open up don't freak out
  • 00:16:49
and you open dpp up your image will look
  • 00:16:52
    blurry
  • 00:16:53
and then just give it a second it's
  • 00:16:54
trying to load that camera profile and
  • 00:16:56
    everything once it loads it
  • 00:16:58
we'll see i mean these birds aren't real
  • 00:17:00
close to me because i'm i'm using about
  • 00:17:01
    three
  • 00:17:02
i can look in a minute i think i was
  • 00:17:04
    about 320
  • 00:17:07
    to
  • 00:17:08
280 i think on this so you know i'm
  • 00:17:12
    you know not real close
  • 00:17:14
    and look at that eye
  • 00:17:17
it it looks tack sharp it's pretty cool
  • 00:17:19
especially when you had two birds
  • 00:17:21
all right let's go to this one next
  • 00:17:23
i tried to start these in the right
  • 00:17:25
order i want to look at them we'll see
  • 00:17:27
so again you click your picture you get
  • 00:17:29
tools we jump to start robbers mode
  • 00:17:33
so go here so again i was holding down
  • 00:17:36
for a half second because i'm at 16. you
  • 00:17:37
should always see it at 16 because it's
  • 00:17:39
only capture half second 15 frames
  • 00:17:42
and so i had 33 frames so let's see what
  • 00:17:44
i do what did i capture so here's that
  • 00:17:47
uh little the fledgling here in the nest
  • 00:17:49
poking out saying feed me feed me feed
  • 00:17:51
    me
  • 00:17:52
    and
  • 00:17:54
and really i didn't really notice there
  • 00:17:56
a couple times i'd see that
  • 00:17:57
red in their mouth when they'd open
  • 00:17:59
their beak real wide but they were
  • 00:18:01
moving that little beak so fast i didn't
  • 00:18:02
notice it so it's pretty cool that 4000
  • 00:18:04
    captures all this little movement
  • 00:18:06
so let's see what i captured so let's go
  • 00:18:08
    to the right
  • 00:18:10
and then look i captured much anything
  • 00:18:12
besides that baby in there keep
  • 00:18:14
    scrolling
  • 00:18:15
just the baby moving his head and
  • 00:18:17
    barking
  • 00:18:18
    wanting food in there
  • 00:18:21
so now let's see what did the
  • 00:18:24
pre-burst capture so here we go back one
  • 00:18:26
nothing see little feet over in the top
  • 00:18:28
right when he's trying to land up here
  • 00:18:30
let's keep going back oh there's the one
  • 00:18:32
i was concerned about it was this one
  • 00:18:33
    down below
  • 00:18:35
and there she is he or she whoever it is
  • 00:18:39
    and there it is
  • 00:18:40
and i believe it was pushing off that so
  • 00:18:43
it was perched and i was waiting for it
  • 00:18:44
to push off so let's just look at it
  • 00:18:46
    kind of faster
  • 00:18:48
these are all the images that i was
  • 00:18:49
trying to capture and i missed the whole
  • 00:18:51
    sequence
  • 00:18:53
your brain sitting there thinking i'm
  • 00:18:54
hitting that fast enough but these birds
  • 00:18:56
are about like those woodpeckers are
  • 00:18:57
super fast so we're missing it so this
  • 00:19:00
is the thing i caught this is everything
  • 00:19:02
    the pre-burst caught
  • 00:19:04
    that is pretty cool
  • 00:19:05
let's go look at another image see what
  • 00:19:07
    we got
  • 00:19:08
let's look at this one let's go again
  • 00:19:10
click the image go to tools
  • 00:19:12
    start robbers tool
  • 00:19:15
and here it is that there's a 15 before
  • 00:19:17
here's after he's sitting here saying
  • 00:19:19
    feed me again
  • 00:19:20
it's all a little bit fleshly too let's
  • 00:19:23
    see what i captured
  • 00:19:28
nothing besides the head movements and
  • 00:19:30
stuff so let's look like was before i'm
  • 00:19:32
just going to move this faster so let's
  • 00:19:33
    go back in time
  • 00:19:35
that's what i was trying to capture so
  • 00:19:38
what i saw was this uh
  • 00:19:40
this guy coming in to land
  • 00:19:42
and the baby says where's my food i
  • 00:19:44
don't see any food in the beak but it
  • 00:19:46
    may be there
  • 00:19:47
so that's what i was looking at so i was
  • 00:19:48
trying to capture this guy and if this
  • 00:19:50
    wings weren't clipped that's being
  • 00:19:52
    pretty cute little picture
  • 00:19:54
and let's move to the right that's not
  • 00:19:56
    too bad
  • 00:19:57
i could do something with this let's see
  • 00:19:58
    how
  • 00:20:00
in focus this one is let's give it a
  • 00:20:02
    second
  • 00:20:05
nope it's not bad yeah it's pretty good
  • 00:20:08
yeah that's not bad i'm considering what
  • 00:20:10
    we got
  • 00:20:12
yeah let's see if we give it a second to
  • 00:20:14
catch up so you got the little spinny
  • 00:20:16
    spinny wheel
  • 00:20:19
there we go so yeah so the focus caught
  • 00:20:21
this guy which is really cool because
  • 00:20:23
all i did was hit you know i was
  • 00:20:25
focusing on these guys first i was
  • 00:20:27
waiting for this guy to take off is what
  • 00:20:28
    i was probably watching
  • 00:20:30
and this guy comes in the frame and so i
  • 00:20:33
    just hit the
  • 00:20:34
you know i had i just moved my single
  • 00:20:35
point close this guy hit the focus
  • 00:20:37
    grabbed him
  • 00:20:38
so that's pretty cool zoom out
  • 00:20:41
so go to the next frame there's wings
  • 00:20:43
are clipped so this would have been a
  • 00:20:45
really cool series if i would have
  • 00:20:46
    gotten uh
  • 00:20:48
    this little better again
  • 00:20:51
i'm zooming in and what happens it's
  • 00:20:53
still the old picture so it takes a
  • 00:20:54
    second to
  • 00:20:55
so it looks like it finally hit focus
  • 00:20:58
    um
  • 00:20:59
pretty good because i really wasn't
  • 00:21:01
trying hard on this i was just basically
  • 00:21:02
    setting up
  • 00:21:04
my bass focus methods on these guys and
  • 00:21:06
i was just holding that you know
  • 00:21:08
pre-burst and when they got they would
  • 00:21:10
try to push off or they would come in
  • 00:21:11
land i'd try to hit the button and see
  • 00:21:13
    what i could capture
  • 00:21:14
and this one's a really good example
  • 00:21:17
    of
  • 00:21:18
    what it's capturing
  • 00:21:20
    anyway that's that's that image let's go
  • 00:21:22
    to another one
  • 00:21:24
so again click picture start raw i'll
  • 00:21:27
try to move to these a little faster now
  • 00:21:29
    again we got the pre-buffer
  • 00:21:31
uh this is everything i captured
  • 00:21:34
through the post behind the post
  • 00:21:36
so i apparently i'm trying to capture
  • 00:21:37
    him coming in so he's
  • 00:21:41
landing up there i mean he's it locked
  • 00:21:43
    on to him pretty good
  • 00:21:49
i said i was gonna go through this
  • 00:21:50
faster and i think once we slow down
  • 00:21:53
but this is what i captured right well
  • 00:21:55
after i hit the shutter let's see what
  • 00:21:57
    pre was
  • 00:21:59
so i was trying to capture this guy
  • 00:22:01
coming in doing the same thing was doing
  • 00:22:02
    before hovering
  • 00:22:04
so why didn't i turn my camera a little
  • 00:22:06
toward the left because i was trying to
  • 00:22:07
center these guys hoping this guy would
  • 00:22:09
take off and fly out of the screen not
  • 00:22:11
one coming in so i was
  • 00:22:13
you know i could have put the right more
  • 00:22:14
    but i don't know which direction's going
  • 00:22:15
to go left or right or towards me or
  • 00:22:17
away from me so i try to put him in the
  • 00:22:18
center just so i could capture that
  • 00:22:21
    so this is what i
  • 00:22:22
captured with the pre there's the head
  • 00:22:24
    coming in
  • 00:22:25
    so he's hovering
  • 00:22:28
    over there on the left
  • 00:22:31
so here's one of those that's
  • 00:22:32
questionable this is what i'll test the
  • 00:22:33
    r3
  • 00:22:35
they're just twisting and turning so
  • 00:22:36
much i think that's what it is this
  • 00:22:38
could be rolling shutter but i i mean
  • 00:22:40
it's moving so fast it could be this
  • 00:22:41
this gives me that could it be is it
  • 00:22:44
turning i used to see this with my r5
  • 00:22:46
but again the r5 is not stacked either
  • 00:22:48
it's 15 frames second it could
  • 00:22:51
have earlier shutter hit 30 you're going
  • 00:22:53
to see it i think 30 you're going to see
  • 00:22:55
it more because it's moving faster
  • 00:22:56
    you're getting more images
  • 00:22:58
    so i'm i'll we'll run the r3 and see
  • 00:23:00
what happens i'll go out there these
  • 00:23:01
guys hopefully will be around for this
  • 00:23:03
weekend so i'll go rent the r3 if it's
  • 00:23:05
    available this weekend during the
  • 00:23:07
    holiday
  • 00:23:08
and i'm going to run a couple lenses a
  • 00:23:10
    test also
  • 00:23:11
    so that's that picture
  • 00:23:13
let's go look at another one it's going
  • 00:23:15
to be a two-hour video again
  • 00:23:20
we got 15 prior all these are after
  • 00:23:24
so this one when i hit the shutter i did
  • 00:23:26
    capture
  • 00:23:27
what i wanted to capture there's the
  • 00:23:29
    bird doing his little
  • 00:23:31
best tummy bird impression close to the
  • 00:23:33
box with the baby saying please give me
  • 00:23:35
    some food
  • 00:23:37
and there you go i didn't see them feed
  • 00:23:39
them ever i wonder if they're trying to
  • 00:23:40
    make them fledge out
  • 00:23:43
because they don't see any food going
  • 00:23:44
out of that one to the baby
  • 00:23:48
    that's interesting
  • 00:23:49
what did i capture prior let's look
  • 00:23:51
    so prior to that
  • 00:23:54
nothing so i did good this time
  • 00:23:56
i probably saw him coming in saw baby
  • 00:23:59
squawking and i hit the shutter and i
  • 00:24:01
    did good so
  • 00:24:02
my reaction time was better on this one
  • 00:24:04
but the more time you spend with the
  • 00:24:06
    guys the better
  • 00:24:07
there that's a pretty cool one little
  • 00:24:09
feet out ready to land that's kind of
  • 00:24:10
    cool
  • 00:24:13
    let's go to another one
  • 00:24:14
so i i won that time
  • 00:24:17
    my reaction time was good
  • 00:24:20
all right we are pre again let's look at
  • 00:24:22
it coming in the birds coming in i
  • 00:24:24
captured it what capture prior hey i did
  • 00:24:25
    good again
  • 00:24:29
well so what i'm getting at is
  • 00:24:30
you know so your reaction time is pretty
  • 00:24:32
good you know the first ones were saying
  • 00:24:33
hey my reaction time is horrible this
  • 00:24:35
one you know i caught it and it's not
  • 00:24:37
very you know looks like it was about 15
  • 00:24:40
    frames so i caught it
  • 00:24:43
now i was out of focus and stuff but
  • 00:24:44
that's okay it happens a lot
  • 00:24:47
so that means i always had my focal was
  • 00:24:49
sticking on this little bird on the pole
  • 00:24:51
at the time more than him
  • 00:24:53
it's an angry looking little pose there
  • 00:24:55
    in it
  • 00:24:57
    [Laughter]
  • 00:25:00
it's amazing once you capture from time
  • 00:25:03
to time there we go now we're now the
  • 00:25:05
camera the software caught up it's
  • 00:25:07
    pretty funny little pose
  • 00:25:09
so let's jump ahead and look at uh
  • 00:25:11
the arctic turn so i went out to out
  • 00:25:14
here to look for this arctic turn
  • 00:25:16
    because i knew there's a little stick
  • 00:25:19
they like to land on when the babies
  • 00:25:21
weren't fledged out and flying they
  • 00:25:23
    would
  • 00:25:24
sit on this thing for a lot so a lot of
  • 00:25:26
people you'll see this perch in a lot of
  • 00:25:28
pictures from people at potter's marsh
  • 00:25:31
right now the fledglings are not running
  • 00:25:33
    around
  • 00:25:34
flying they look like the adults are a
  • 00:25:36
hair smaller a little darker but they're
  • 00:25:38
flying with mom and dad out here so
  • 00:25:39
they'll be gone in a couple days so if
  • 00:25:42
i'm going to rent this r3 to look at
  • 00:25:43
this stuff i got to do it pretty quick
  • 00:25:45
because the same thing with those uh
  • 00:25:46
tree swallows they'll be gone here in a
  • 00:25:48
    week
  • 00:25:49
right now it's pretty fun to watch these
  • 00:25:51
    turns
  • 00:25:52
what has happened is mom and dad will go
  • 00:25:54
    grab a stickleback it's a little fish
  • 00:25:56
little green looking fish or they'll
  • 00:25:58
grab a bug or something they will go
  • 00:26:00
    catch one of those
  • 00:26:02
they'll go fly over to the babies if
  • 00:26:04
they're not up in the air flying they'll
  • 00:26:05
entice them to get up in the air and
  • 00:26:07
they'll kind of just go with one of
  • 00:26:08
those babies will follow them because
  • 00:26:09
    they want that food
  • 00:26:11
some others i saw with the baby close to
  • 00:26:13
them they were doing the dive and kind
  • 00:26:15
of hitting the water and i guess showed
  • 00:26:17
them how to catch a fish
  • 00:26:18
but they will just fly around that baby
  • 00:26:20
will fly with them and you can really
  • 00:26:22
tell the difference in the the you know
  • 00:26:24
the fledglings the sub adults and the
  • 00:26:25
    adults adults are nice graceful
  • 00:26:28
soft flappy wings so the babies are just
  • 00:26:30
    all erratic and stuff
  • 00:26:32
but here's this bird flying off the post
  • 00:26:35
and this one was a good example
  • 00:26:37
it was really painful because they're
  • 00:26:39
not hitting this spot as much that's
  • 00:26:40
kind of guess what i was trying to get
  • 00:26:41
to they're not landing on this perch as
  • 00:26:43
much as they were when they're watching
  • 00:26:45
    the nest
  • 00:26:46
right now they're trying to feed babies
  • 00:26:47
but this this guy did come
  • 00:26:49
i don't say bird but two or three times
  • 00:26:51
it landed there only one time did i get
  • 00:26:53
captured what i wanted to capture
  • 00:26:55
because i was distracted by something
  • 00:26:57
when he took off another bird flying or
  • 00:26:58
    something
  • 00:27:00
anyway so here is what i captured mr
  • 00:27:03
scott when he clicked the shutter he got
  • 00:27:05
    it off the pole
  • 00:27:06
because he sits on that pole so long and
  • 00:27:08
when he does it you oh crap you gotta
  • 00:27:10
    hit the button
  • 00:27:11
    and
  • 00:27:12
gone and the whole time i'm having to
  • 00:27:14
    hold that shutter button halfway
  • 00:27:17
which is kind of annoying but if you
  • 00:27:19
    want to get that
  • 00:27:21
you've got to have it halfway down at
  • 00:27:22
least for a half second and i did have a
  • 00:27:24
half second because again you see i have
  • 00:27:25
    16 to 36
  • 00:27:27
so this little guy flew off
  • 00:27:29
and this is what i captured
  • 00:27:33
so i did from 15 to 36 so i captured
  • 00:27:35
    about 20 frames
  • 00:27:38
so that's not even one second burst
  • 00:27:40
yeah that's how quick they blow out of
  • 00:27:42
there again i had it centered because i
  • 00:27:43
don't know if he's going right or he's
  • 00:27:44
    going left
  • 00:27:46
    and
  • 00:27:46
that's what i captured now what did that
  • 00:27:48
capture the 15 frames prior let's look
  • 00:27:55
got the whole sequence that i wanted
  • 00:27:57
everything prior is what i wanted
  • 00:27:59
after yeah not really what i wanted
  • 00:28:03
    and looking at this
  • 00:28:08
these are the three frames that i would
  • 00:28:10
    wanted that one's okay
  • 00:28:12
i mean the wing clipping and all that
  • 00:28:14
and i'm just saying that what what's
  • 00:28:16
going on in the picture what i would
  • 00:28:17
    have been after
  • 00:28:18
    for these launch off shots
  • 00:28:20
    is
  • 00:28:22
this one right here look at the little
  • 00:28:24
foot coming off the wing posture had
  • 00:28:26
been not clipped and framed composition
  • 00:28:28
better been cool and that shot right
  • 00:28:30
there i think this is the one that i
  • 00:28:32
would have been after like if i was
  • 00:28:33
    really out there
  • 00:28:34
trying to this is all i'm going to
  • 00:28:36
capture i'm wanting these fly-off shots
  • 00:28:37
because a lot of times when i go in the
  • 00:28:38
    field
  • 00:28:39
yeah you go find what you can find but
  • 00:28:41
if you know you've got a subject that
  • 00:28:42
you know is going to be there
  • 00:28:44
you've been watching their behavior over
  • 00:28:46
years or a couple months or a couple
  • 00:28:48
    days
  • 00:28:49
then you know what you can get and i
  • 00:28:50
knew in this instance i could go out
  • 00:28:52
there and i could catch them flying off
  • 00:28:53
    this little post by this
  • 00:28:56
    tree here
  • 00:28:57
    and
  • 00:28:58
i caught it but actually i didn't catch
  • 00:29:00
it the robbers mode caught it
  • 00:29:03
    and that's really cool
  • 00:29:05
so how do what do you do with these
  • 00:29:06
    images once you have them
  • 00:29:10
you look at them you go okay let me look
  • 00:29:12
    at these images
  • 00:29:13
so i know that back here somewhere
  • 00:29:16
let's say this is the image i want to
  • 00:29:19
    extract one more over
  • 00:29:22
so what you do is you hit this little
  • 00:29:23
button here which is uh actually don't
  • 00:29:26
    have to do that
  • 00:29:28
    you need to go away
  • 00:29:30
    there is
  • 00:29:33
    there we go
  • 00:29:36
there is these two down here so if you
  • 00:29:39
    hit this one
  • 00:29:40
it's going to do the image you got up
  • 00:29:41
    here
  • 00:29:43
this button you can come in here and say
  • 00:29:44
    i want
  • 00:29:47
these three images so you can click this
  • 00:29:48
it's the start see i'll put this little
  • 00:29:50
    flag here
  • 00:29:51
i can go two more back
  • 00:29:53
let's go ahead and grab that one and i
  • 00:29:55
can hit that that's going to be my range
  • 00:29:57
that i want to do so now if i hit this
  • 00:29:58
    it will extract the range
  • 00:30:00
so let's go back to the one i like so
  • 00:30:03
this one so we'll just hit this one i
  • 00:30:04
want to extract just this image you hit
  • 00:30:06
    that button
  • 00:30:08
comes up tells you where you want to
  • 00:30:09
save it that's how simple it is
  • 00:30:12
so all i got to do is save this where i
  • 00:30:13
want to save it and then i can open it
  • 00:30:15
in all my programs because now it is a
  • 00:30:17
single image it's no longer a roll it's
  • 00:30:19
    a single
  • 00:30:20
image well guys that's just basically
  • 00:30:23
    how you use the uh
  • 00:30:26
raw burst mode on this camera it's
  • 00:30:27
    pretty cool
  • 00:30:29
    do i think it's a gimmick do i think
  • 00:30:30
    it's a keeper
  • 00:30:32
    i think it's in between i think it's
  • 00:30:34
very situational but it's a really cool
  • 00:30:36
feature uh you can see with these images
  • 00:30:39
    here
  • 00:30:40
when i missed that the robust if i was
  • 00:30:43
you know holding it down for a half c
  • 00:30:44
you know for a little bit it was
  • 00:30:46
capturing what i want to capture that
  • 00:30:47
turn i wouldn't have those pictures now
  • 00:30:49
there's not pictures i'm going to use
  • 00:30:50
but again if i was really out in the
  • 00:30:52
field really composition getting it set
  • 00:30:53
up the way i want to
  • 00:30:55
that'd have been great same with the
  • 00:30:56
    tree swallows i saw behavior i wouldn't
  • 00:30:58
have caught i actually may have a few
  • 00:30:59
    pictures here i could use
  • 00:31:01
    uh but
  • 00:31:02
    yeah pretty cool but
  • 00:31:04
    why i say it's situational is you'll
  • 00:31:06
notice also i i caught them from time to
  • 00:31:09
time you know the the pre-burst was
  • 00:31:11
there my timing was good from when i hit
  • 00:31:12
    the shutter
  • 00:31:14
and that just came from more time
  • 00:31:15
watching those like these trees was
  • 00:31:17
watched them longer you know they were
  • 00:31:19
    coming to that spot
  • 00:31:20
the turn was only there like two or
  • 00:31:22
    three times maybe four times
  • 00:31:24
and you they just they look like nothing
  • 00:31:27
they've gone they just pop you know it's
  • 00:31:29
it's not even half second and they're
  • 00:31:31
    off that route that post
  • 00:31:33
so you really have to be because they'll
  • 00:31:34
no longer sleep right now you're holding
  • 00:31:36
hold oh crap and if you don't hit it
  • 00:31:38
right and if you're relying only on
  • 00:31:40
yourself you're probably missing it like
  • 00:31:42
i do all the time off those posts
  • 00:31:44
but this raw burst mode it caught coming
  • 00:31:47
off of there so that makes me now want
  • 00:31:49
to go back out there and get some good
  • 00:31:50
comp and try to work on some of those
  • 00:31:52
jump off shots now that i have this
  • 00:31:53
pre-burst mode or the robbers mode
  • 00:31:55
    pretty cool
  • 00:31:57
but for other things it wouldn't be if
  • 00:31:58
i'm just shooting fox running around uh
  • 00:32:00
if they're now after feeding yeah i'll
  • 00:32:03
go i'll i can see me using it when
  • 00:32:05
they're trying to catch those bowls they
  • 00:32:06
    do that jump thing
  • 00:32:08
every picture i've gotten is one female
  • 00:32:09
it's always after she's already hit the
  • 00:32:11
hit the snow and it's not very good
  • 00:32:12
picture but now when the winter hits and
  • 00:32:15
she's doing that hunting those voles in
  • 00:32:16
his open little fields i'll be using
  • 00:32:18
this raw burst mode maybe i can catch
  • 00:32:20
that full jump that'll be really cool so
  • 00:32:23
that'll be a get i've been wanting that
  • 00:32:24
shot and i haven't gotten it yet
  • 00:32:27
    but yeah that's why i say it's
  • 00:32:28
situational other times you don't want
  • 00:32:29
to use it because you don't be going to
  • 00:32:30
dpp and going through this it's pretty
  • 00:32:32
slow and you have to go through those
  • 00:32:33
rolls pull the pictures you want out
  • 00:32:36
um it'll take a little longer to call
  • 00:32:37
than the process i use and i'll go
  • 00:32:40
through my full workflow process not
  • 00:32:42
really how to edit but just how i go
  • 00:32:43
through my workflow process and why do i
  • 00:32:45
    use that process
  • 00:32:48
after watching this what do you think
  • 00:32:49
about the you know that was it something
  • 00:32:51
you'd use if you had it on your camera
  • 00:32:52
or if you even have the r7 have you used
  • 00:32:54
it yet i think i think it's pretty cool
  • 00:32:56
thanks for watching the video and i will
  • 00:32:59
see you on the next episode you guys
  • 00:33:01
