00:00:00
is it possible to learn to draw faster
00:00:03
is it possible to spend the same time
00:00:06
drawing but to go further in that time
00:00:10
yes it is let me explain when we learn
00:00:13
to draw as a self-taught artist and I
00:00:16
assume you're a self-taught artist
00:00:18
because you're watching this video
00:00:20
rather than sitting in a class having a
00:00:22
teacher teach you I'm having to actually
00:00:24
learn two things when I learn to draw I
00:00:28
have to learn to draw but I also have to
00:00:31
learn to learn at the same time because
00:00:35
drawing is a skill but learning is a
00:00:38
skill as well and just as there are
00:00:41
better ways to learn to draw there are
00:00:44
better ways that we learn to learn and
00:00:47
if we don't properly appreciate that we
00:00:50
need to learn to learn then we're
00:00:53
probably not going to have an approach
00:00:55
to learning that will enable us to learn
00:00:58
as well as we can as effectively as we
00:01:01
can as much for the time that we spend
00:01:04
doing it as we could and because we're
00:01:07
learning to draw we probably want to be
00:01:09
able to draw pictures to create artworks
00:01:13
but this very understandable and great
00:01:16
aim can actually lead us down a winding
00:01:20
path that means it will take us much
00:01:22
longer to get to the place we want to
00:01:24
get to or in fact we may not even get as
00:01:27
far along the path it may be a different
00:01:30
path that will take us further faster
00:01:33
and here's that better path from a
00:01:36
learning point of view from a learning
00:01:38
tolearn point of view in general terms
00:01:41
we get further Faster by isolating small
00:01:45
components of what we're trying to learn
00:01:48
and working on them
00:01:50
intensely repeatedly and then once we've
00:01:54
mastered to some degree at least those
00:01:57
elements we add new ele elements to it
00:02:00
that we then learn to incorporate into
00:02:03
what we've already learned and we repeat
00:02:05
those until we've reached a level of
00:02:08
competence with those and at the same
00:02:10
time we're still consolidating those
00:02:13
first elements that we began and then we
00:02:15
introduce a new element and at this
00:02:17
point we do the same thing we
00:02:20
incorporate the new element we really
00:02:23
consolidate those second elements and
00:02:25
those first elements we did we can do
00:02:27
without thinking we've had so much
00:02:29
practice so regularly and you can see
00:02:32
the pattern and you can see the way it
00:02:34
builds relatively quickly where there
00:02:36
are some skill elements now that we've
00:02:39
done so repeatedly for such a long
00:02:41
period of time that we've developed such
00:02:43
a level of of skill and practice that we
00:02:46
don't even think about it there are some
00:02:48
perhaps we're having to think a bit
00:02:49
about a little bit of an effort but
00:02:53
basically we have them under our belt
00:02:55
and then there are the most recent ones
00:02:56
that we're still having to really apply
00:02:58
ourselves to concentr with and we start
00:03:01
with the most fundamental elements for
00:03:03
what we want to draw if I want to draw
00:03:05
buildings there's no point me learning
00:03:07
how to draw brick work if the angles of
00:03:09
my walls look all wrong if I choose to
00:03:12
do a 10minute skill learning exercise
00:03:16
every day instead of a 2hour drawing
00:03:19
once a week then I'm probably going to
00:03:22
learn those skills 10 times faster than
00:03:25
I will with my Weekly Drawing and it's
00:03:28
not just because I'm doing them every
00:03:31
day but I'm only working on one or two
00:03:33
skills in particular but I'm also not
00:03:36
having to do the full two hours of
00:03:38
drawing incorporating all the elements
00:03:41
of a full drawing that I'm actually not
00:03:44
working on at the moment possibly don't
00:03:46
need to work on or I do need to work on
00:03:49
but I can't work on everything at once
00:03:51
it ends up being a tremendous time saer
00:03:54
as well as such an effective way to
00:03:57
learn and build on our skills and if I
00:04:00
sit down for 10 minutes every day I'm
00:04:02
still remembering perhaps even almost
00:04:05
feeling the pen in my hand drawing
00:04:07
whatever I did the day before and that
00:04:09
becomes my starting point but if it's a
00:04:12
week or two weeks between drawings
00:04:14
there's possibly very little of the
00:04:16
drawing experience from the previous
00:04:18
session that I'm still carrying enough
00:04:21
to be able to use to my advantage and if
00:04:24
every week or so I'm trying to do a
00:04:25
proper drawing then I'm probably being
00:04:28
tempted to draw an impressive subject to
00:04:31
make my drawing look better and so it's
00:04:34
really easy to choose a subject that's
00:04:36
simply too hard for my learning level
00:04:40
and that makes my learning even more
00:04:42
difficult and less effective and if I'm
00:04:45
always doing lots of things not quite
00:04:47
right in my big
00:04:48
drawings then I'm actually learning bad
00:04:51
habits that at some stage at best I'll
00:04:54
have to put time into learning to undo
00:04:57
at worst I'll always have them with me
00:05:00
but if I'm working on skills I can
00:05:02
isolate those skills and perhaps just
00:05:04
even work on them in basic shapes and
00:05:07
then I can add some basic elements to
00:05:10
the perspective a few windows and doors
00:05:13
and I can learn how to do those really
00:05:15
well I can draw cottages and houses and
00:05:19
eventually I can work my way up to
00:05:22
drawing the M du in Paris but I don't
00:05:25
start there I gradually increase not
00:05:28
just the compl it of my subject but also
00:05:32
the complexity of all the other skill
00:05:35
elements I've been learning the
00:05:37
perspective the foreshortening creating
00:05:40
the effect of depth and so on and it
00:05:43
still only takes me a short period of
00:05:45
time every day because most of what I'm
00:05:49
needing to do doing it this way I've
00:05:52
learned well how to do it correctly and
00:05:56
the new component is still relatively
00:05:59
small small every day and then when I do
00:06:02
do my long 2hour drawings I've learned
00:06:05
in one of my practice sessions how to
00:06:07
create the effective brick work I don't
00:06:09
have to think about perspective because
00:06:11
I've been doing that accurately for so
00:06:13
long now that I can start to enjoy
00:06:16
creating artworks not just the process
00:06:19
of drawing but also the creating of
00:06:22
drawings that I feel proud of good day
