00:00:00
hey everybody Dr Ray and we are going to
00:00:02
talk about task analysis I'm going to
00:00:04
try to make it super easy it's something
00:00:06
that my students get hung up on so often
00:00:09
because they're just not sure if they're
00:00:10
doing it correctly so I want to talk
00:00:12
about it I want to talk you through it
00:00:13
let's talk about why you do it let me
00:00:15
show you an example and talk about
00:00:17
actually doing a task analysis because
00:00:19
it's it's it's such an easy thing we
00:00:22
make something so for some reason texts
00:00:25
and and everything make something that's
00:00:27
so simple so complicated and it should
00:00:29
not be complicated this should be a very
00:00:31
simple thing that you do all right so
00:00:34
what is a task analysis and why do you
00:00:36
do it a task analysis is simple simply a
00:00:41
overview a map of every single step or
00:00:45
part of a process so if you had like
00:00:47
step one step two step three what are
00:00:50
all the things you need to do to do step
00:00:51
one what are all the items what are all
00:00:53
the things you need to identify what are
00:00:55
all the things you need to learn or do
00:00:57
in order for step one to happen and it's
00:00:59
a visual of that that's all it is I'm
00:01:01
going to break it down and make it easy
00:01:02
but why do you even do this first of all
00:01:04
let's talk about why you do it and then
00:01:05
let's talk about some examples all right
00:01:07
so why do you do task analysis you do
00:01:09
task analysis because this is a quality
00:01:12
check in the process quality check when
00:01:15
you're designing training this is me
00:01:17
giving this to my client this task
00:01:19
analysis to say this process map this
00:01:21
visual of everything and saying is this
00:01:23
every piece of content that we need to
00:01:25
teach your learners is this it is this
00:01:27
everything if they say no then I say
00:01:29
what are we missing if they say yes then
00:01:31
boom that's a quality check I get that
00:01:33
in email or writing and I know that I'm
00:01:35
not adding any new content unless
00:01:37
they're going to pay me more money
00:01:39
because we start to get in scope creep
00:01:41
there all right so let's talk about
00:01:43
let's look at an example I I I have a
00:01:45
couple example so let's start out the
00:01:47
first thing I always the first example I
00:01:49
always talk about is brushing your teeth
00:01:52
why because it's simple and every one of
00:01:55
you should be doing it two times a day
00:01:57
right that's what your dentist tells you
00:01:59
right two times a day
00:02:00
I brush my teeth and brush and floss
00:02:02
twice a day so we got to do twice a day
00:02:04
all right because you don't get cavities
00:02:05
and all kinds of bad stuff and we don't
00:02:06
want that to happen so you know listen
00:02:08
to the dentist anyway brushing your
00:02:10
teeth what is the first step in brushing
00:02:13
your teeth Step One is what what's First
00:02:16
Step think about it in your head for one
00:02:18
take a second think about it I'll count
00:02:19
to five I'll let you think for one
00:02:24
second all right so what was the first
00:02:26
step you thought about it you took five
00:02:29
seconds I guess and thought about what
00:02:30
was the first step to brushing your
00:02:31
teeth you take your toothbrush and you
00:02:34
take your your toothbrush right
00:02:35
toothbrush and toothpaste and then you
00:02:38
put the toothpaste onto the brush but
00:02:40
that's like multiple steps right there
00:02:42
so the first thing we take our
00:02:44
toothpaste and put it on the toothbrush
00:02:47
but there's some steps before that
00:02:49
happens okay so let's say step one is
00:02:51
take our too take pick up the toothpaste
00:02:54
I need to look at step one and say what
00:02:57
are all the things that are involved in
00:02:58
picking up the toothpaste
00:03:00
can the person identify what the
00:03:02
toothpaste is right so maybe I need to
00:03:07
teach because remember like a lot of
00:03:08
people say like I learn by doing and yes
00:03:11
everyone learns by doing but you can't
00:03:12
learn by doing when I talk about
00:03:14
brushing your teeth I can talk about
00:03:16
learn by doing but if the person has no
00:03:18
idea what a toothbrush is or toothpaste
00:03:20
I can't just tell them to go pick up a
00:03:22
toothpaste and toothbrush and start
00:03:23
doing it it's like when you get those
00:03:25
really bad directions like when you buy
00:03:26
furniture from Walmart and it's like one
00:03:28
sheet of like no description like pick
00:03:31
up the thing and like put these two
00:03:33
things that we're not even going to show
00:03:35
you a picture of we're just going to say
00:03:36
what they are together like if I was
00:03:38
telling you to build an engine I was
00:03:39
like take the carburetor and the the
00:03:42
x-axis screw and put and you'd be like
00:03:44
well what is the x-axis screw I just
00:03:46
made that up it's nothing but what is
00:03:48
the x-axis screw so we have to identif
00:03:50
what are all the things you need to
00:03:52
teach before someone can pick up the
00:03:53
toothpaste well they need to identify
00:03:55
the toothpaste and then I need to
00:03:57
probably teach them like where the cap
00:03:58
is on the toothpaste and then I need to
00:04:00
teach them how to unscrew the cap so
00:04:03
that step one of picking up the
00:04:04
toothpaste might have a bunch of things
00:04:06
around it that we need to teach the
00:04:08
learner then step two like put the
00:04:10
toothpaste on the toothbrush okay so for
00:04:12
step two now we got to identify a
00:04:14
toothbrush we got to teach them how to
00:04:17
unscrew the toothpaste take off the
00:04:19
little metal foil thing if it's on some
00:04:21
toothpaste you know or sealed teach them
00:04:22
how to squeeze the toothpaste teach him
00:04:24
the right amount to squeeze on the
00:04:25
toothbrush all that kind of stuff is
00:04:28
taught around step two so you can see
00:04:31
each step you you the simplest thing to
00:04:33
do the simplest way to make a task
00:04:34
analysis to say step one two three four
00:04:37
you know all your steps the process and
00:04:39
then say well what is involved in this
00:04:40
step one to get it done what is involved
00:04:43
in this step two like I can tell someone
00:04:46
teach someone how to like turn the power
00:04:48
off my computer which is like you you
00:04:50
find that little button in the middle of
00:04:52
the laptop and push it and hold it and
00:04:54
it shuts it off right that's the easiest
00:04:56
way but I need to have them identify
00:04:58
like where is the button what is the
00:05:00
button like what does the button look
00:05:02
like how long do you hold it down like
00:05:03
there's all that stuff that goes into
00:05:06
that would need to be in the task
00:05:07
analysis a task analysis is
00:05:10
everything now let's say I'm teaching um
00:05:14
kindergarteners the toothbrush
00:05:16
toothpaste thing I probably do need to
00:05:18
teach them what toothpaste is as a
00:05:21
kindergartener but like my son that's 10
00:05:23
if I'm teaching him how to brush his
00:05:25
teeth properly I don't need to teach him
00:05:28
the what a toothpaste is for him I
00:05:30
probably would focus on like the length
00:05:32
of time brushing your teeth and making
00:05:33
sure you're hitting all your everywhere
00:05:36
so you know different Learners novice
00:05:39
versus experience that task analysis is
00:05:41
going to look different the idea is when
00:05:44
you're doing the task analysis you try
00:05:46
to do it for the novice learner and then
00:05:49
you just eliminate the things that
00:05:50
aren't for them like maybe I'm teaching
00:05:52
on Expert so I don't need to teach them
00:05:54
like identify toothpaste and toothbrush
00:05:56
like we're focusing on a different step
00:05:58
really so you have to know this is where
00:06:00
you know your learners and know what you
00:06:02
need to do that's why you do that
00:06:03
learner analysis before you start the
00:06:05
task analysis so you know what the
00:06:06
Learners need to know all right let's
00:06:09
talk look at another example so this
00:06:12
example um is actually something I did
00:06:15
with my kids and this is something that
00:06:18
I did in second grade thank you second
00:06:21
grade teacher for doing this because I
00:06:22
still remember it it's the probably one
00:06:24
of the only things I remember from
00:06:26
elementary school my second grade
00:06:27
teacher um what he did did is he told us
00:06:31
he told the class we're going to make
00:06:32
peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and
00:06:34
he said write down the directions for
00:06:37
for uh teaching someone for creating a
00:06:39
peanut butter and jelly sandwich and
00:06:42
then we did an activity and we learned a
00:06:44
lot about directions so I decided to do
00:06:47
this with my kids since they're all in
00:06:48
elementary school here let me show you
00:06:50
what happens when I teach when we do
00:06:52
this activity with my kids here you
00:06:54
go okay so as I said we're going to be
00:06:58
testing out if Mom my kids can teach us
00:07:01
how to make a peanut butter sandwich do
00:07:04
you think they can do it let's see okay
00:07:07
kids how do you make a peanut butter
00:07:09
sandwich put the bread on the plate put
00:07:12
the bread on the plate okay so here's
00:07:14
the bread I'm going to put this on the
00:07:16
plate what's the next step that isn't
00:07:19
bread that's a thing that's a bag that's
00:07:22
bag no put get a piece of bread out of
00:07:24
the bag then put one piece on okay so
00:07:27
how do I get bread out of the bag do I
00:07:29
tear tear the bag open yeah like an
00:07:32
animal I tear the bag open yeah yeah do
00:07:34
it I don't think that's exactly what
00:07:36
we're supposed to do how do I really get
00:07:37
the bread out peel this thing in the Bob
00:07:39
peel this thing in the bobber what is
00:07:41
this thing St it's a ribbon a twisty
00:07:45
okay so we're going to we're going to
00:07:46
take we have to twist the twisty off
00:07:49
what's the next thing that I do open up
00:07:50
the back open up where right here open
00:07:54
okay so I look at the front of the bag
00:07:56
and open it up no get one piece of bread
00:07:58
no get two pieces oh yeah get two two
00:08:01
yeah what about this end piece do we
00:08:03
want that no so you got two pieces of
00:08:06
bread from the middle and what with them
00:08:08
put white piece right there on the
00:08:10
ground and what do I do with this one
00:08:12
don't um just put it on the table for
00:08:13
now put it on the dirty table Yeah okay
00:08:17
now what do I do get knife get knife get
00:08:20
a knife now I'm now use the knife to St
00:08:23
on the peanut butter to open it up like
00:08:26
this no open it up so so first do what
00:08:29
with what do I need to do with this
00:08:30
peanut butter open it up how do I do
00:08:33
that get get the lid and then twist it
00:08:35
okay so you get the lid and you twist
00:08:37
the peanut butter off okay wrong way he
00:08:40
just now what do I do oh get the knife
00:08:43
okay now what is the knife is this the
00:08:44
knife no this this is the knife how do I
00:08:49
know this is the knife versus this this
00:08:51
is this but how do I know this is a
00:08:53
spoon knives cut people um so okay so
00:08:57
knives are sharpen and look like this so
00:08:58
we're identify finding a knife now what
00:09:00
do I do um um put get the scoop of
00:09:03
peanut butter out of the no that's not
00:09:05
how you do it KN pick up this put upside
00:09:07
down pour all no no no no okay so I put
00:09:10
the knife in the peanut butter right
00:09:12
yeah pick up a scoop yeah a big one a
00:09:15
big scoop and then what do I do put it
00:09:16
on the put it on that now spread it out
00:09:20
with the knife now spread it out all
00:09:22
over the bread so cover the entire face
00:09:25
of the bread yeah well almost all of it
00:09:27
you're going to do all of it yeah that's
00:09:28
a big F is that it or do I do another
00:09:31
one that's it um now you put that piece
00:09:34
of bread on there okay and now you use
00:09:38
eat it cut it now you eat so use the
00:09:41
knife to cut the where do I cut it just
00:09:43
this piece off
00:09:46
this directly in half now you eat it now
00:09:49
you eat it why are you cutting it and
00:09:51
then what you eat it you eat it okay
00:09:55
let's let's yeah let's cut it into four
00:09:59
so that we can each have a section one
00:10:03
two e you don't want any okay no I don't
00:10:06
like it wa can I wa did can you have
00:10:08
find and I have one of those what do you
00:10:09
think pretty good right mhm all right we
00:10:12
did it we made a peanut butter sandwich
00:10:15
all right now as you see yes we didn't
00:10:17
have jelly we just did peanut butter
00:10:18
sandwiches and yes they were good and
00:10:20
yes they learned figured out how to do
00:10:22
it correctly with a little bit of
00:10:23
guidance but my kids will always
00:10:24
remember that as I remembered my second
00:10:26
grade teacher teaching me that that's
00:10:28
how simple task analysis is it's
00:10:30
literally something you can teach a
00:10:31
second grader cuz I learned it in second
00:10:33
grade and I just taught my kids in
00:10:36
elementary school so you can learn it
00:10:39
and do it it's very very very easy the
00:10:41
key is knowing your learners and knowing
00:10:44
how far to break down the process did I
00:10:47
need to teach the kids what peanut
00:10:48
butter is no my kids knew what it was
00:10:51
but if this was someone who I can't
00:10:53
assume that everyone knows that think
00:10:55
about people like my kids grew up with
00:10:57
peanut butter but my neighbors next door
00:10:59
the kids might have a peanut peanut
00:11:01
allergy or something and they may have
00:11:03
never seen a can of peanut butter before
00:11:04
so they might not know what peanut
00:11:06
butter is or whatever it happens to be
00:11:08
so you can't just
00:11:10
assume you have to figure it out write
00:11:13
it down as part of your task analysis
00:11:15
and then you meet with your Smee and say
00:11:17
well they don't need to learn this they
00:11:18
don't need to learn that here's what
00:11:19
we're going to focus on for the training
00:11:21
it's the map of your training all right
00:11:24
does that make sense I hope that helped
00:11:26
you out I hope that adds some context to
00:11:28
my other video where I talk about task
00:11:30
analysis remember it's literally just
00:11:32
writing down everything the Learners
00:11:34
need to know that's it all right good
00:11:37
luck get to it let me know how it goes
00:11:40
later everybody
