of you strolling in um but I want to
  • 00:00:18
introduce myself i am Pa i work here um
  • 00:00:21
in admissions and then I do have um our
  • 00:00:24
adviserss and then faculty joining us
  • 00:00:27
here today um later you will see our
  • 00:00:30
students pop in which are some of our
  • 00:00:32
student ambassadors um so if anybody has
  • 00:00:34
any questions you are welcome um to join
  • 00:00:38
and um just ask them anything you want
  • 00:00:40

  • 00:00:42
just put it in the um uh chat or Q&A so
  • 00:00:46
the chat will be used primarily to send
  • 00:00:48
you guys um important links and then if
  • 00:00:50
you guys can use the Q&A if you do have
  • 00:00:52
any questions um and then we will go
  • 00:00:55
from there um so first of all
  • 00:00:58
congratulations on your admissions uh we
  • 00:01:00
do want to welcome you to the Trojan
  • 00:01:01
family um and then I know that a lot of
  • 00:01:04
you guys have got your decisions um
  • 00:01:07
recently maybe some a few days ago um
  • 00:01:10
    but we are working on
  • 00:01:12
those and um we are located in Southern
  • 00:01:16
California if anybody doesn't know u but
  • 00:01:18
we are um in the heart of Los Angeles so
  • 00:01:21
USC it is in the heart of LA um and we
  • 00:01:26
are very um I want to say diverse and um
  • 00:01:30
we are a global hub for innovation so um
  • 00:01:33
if you didn't know or you aren't truly
  • 00:01:36
aware of Los Angeles or California in
  • 00:01:39
general um wherever you may be but we do
  • 00:01:41
have something called Silicon Beach and
  • 00:01:43
basically um it is our area of you know
  • 00:01:47
um I guess startups and then also
  • 00:01:50
    definitely like bigger companies where
  • 00:01:52
there's a lot of opportunities for our
  • 00:01:54
engineering students um and then USC
  • 00:01:56
students in general um but definitely
  • 00:01:59
definitely really close to us um where a
  • 00:02:01
lot of our students um can just take a
  • 00:02:03
short bus ride there or um obviously
  • 00:02:06
drive there um but it is our um global
  • 00:02:10
    hub for
  • 00:02:11
innovation and Then like I mentioned um
  • 00:02:14
we are in Los Angeles so there is um
  • 00:02:16
just short walks um you can take the bus
  • 00:02:19
um and then you could go further out to
  • 00:02:20
explore LA if you've never been but some
  • 00:02:23
short walks that um I will mention is um
  • 00:02:26
you know we are just across the street
  • 00:02:28
from the USC village which a lot of
  • 00:02:30
students hang out with hang out at um we
  • 00:02:33
do have the California Science Center um
  • 00:02:35
the shrine so there's a lot a lot of
  • 00:02:37
things um happening near campus and on
  • 00:02:40
campus um and then if you um want to get
  • 00:02:44
out and venture out a bit um you can
  • 00:02:47
take the bus we do have lines that are
  • 00:02:48
just right outside of USC um and then
  • 00:02:51
you can go um you know downtown you can
  • 00:02:54
go to Chinatown Little Tokyo etc um so
  • 00:02:58
that's by bus and then obviously if you
  • 00:03:00
want to venture out further um we do
  • 00:03:03
have the pier not too far away um Venice
  • 00:03:07
um Hollywood etc a lot of landmarks that
  • 00:03:10
you know a lot of students come and see
  • 00:03:12
um especially if you're not from
  • 00:03:15
California um and then I want to go
  • 00:03:17
straight into what we have to offer for
  • 00:03:20
um our students so we do have a
  • 00:03:22
    mentorship program so the veterary
  • 00:03:24
graduate mentorship program um is a new
  • 00:03:28
way for um you know Verbby grad students
  • 00:03:31
um to start their journey at USC so you
  • 00:03:34
basically get to meet um new students
  • 00:03:37
who are paired with our um current
  • 00:03:40
Burbby grad students and mostly they're
  • 00:03:42
the same academic department and degree
  • 00:03:44
level but again give or take we have a
  • 00:03:46
lot of programs so sometimes there could
  • 00:03:48
be um you know a different pairup but it
  • 00:03:52
is a great way to just get started um on
  • 00:03:55
the right path creating new friends um
  • 00:03:57
you know just getting yourself into USC
  • 00:03:59
and immersing in its culture um and it's
  • 00:04:02
definitely a good way to also expand
  • 00:04:04
your network especially if you're not
  • 00:04:05
from here um and maybe you just want to
  • 00:04:07
figure out like where my friend groups
  • 00:04:09
my student org groups um etc are this is
  • 00:04:12
    a great way to do
  • 00:04:14
so um and then like I said there's a lot
  • 00:04:17
of campus activities um so I definitely
  • 00:04:20
recommend you um checking these out um
  • 00:04:23
these are just a few of what we have to
  • 00:04:25
offer we have of course the tailgate and
  • 00:04:28
football games um even if you aren't
  • 00:04:30
into sports I highly recommend that you
  • 00:04:32
at least attend one for the experience
  • 00:04:35
um and then we also have stuff like
  • 00:04:37
hackathons wellness events we do have
  • 00:04:39
our very own wellness um coach and
  • 00:04:42
mentor her name is Lorenna um and she is
  • 00:04:46
um an advocate for everybody's health
  • 00:04:48
and wellness um that's also a resource
  • 00:04:50
to you um and then we do have mixers and
  • 00:04:53
networking events um so graduate student
  • 00:04:55
clubs um and just depends on what you
  • 00:04:58
want to get involved in and then
  • 00:05:00
obviously we have the Vurby Graduate
  • 00:05:02
Student Association which is also um a
  • 00:05:05
great way just to one be a part of
  • 00:05:07
campus and two get to connect with other
  • 00:05:09
students um these are just a glimpse of
  • 00:05:12
what we have to offer um but again it's
  • 00:05:14
up to you to um see what you like see
  • 00:05:17
what you don't like um and then kind of
  • 00:05:19
test the waters in what you want to um
  • 00:05:22
    you know get involved with
  • 00:05:24
um that being said I know that you guys
  • 00:05:27
are still um either you know deciding
  • 00:05:29
that USC will be um your commitment
  • 00:05:32
score or you know still looking into
  • 00:05:34
things but um I do want to mention that
  • 00:05:36
the sooner you submit the um statement
  • 00:05:38
of intent the faster you have access to
  • 00:05:41
    pre-orientation resources so you'll get
  • 00:05:44
all um resources um as an incoming
  • 00:05:46
student you can join the Burbby
  • 00:05:49
    mentorship program that I mentioned
  • 00:05:50
before um and then you connect with your
  • 00:05:53
    departments through academic webinars um
  • 00:05:56
and then you also get to explore housing
  • 00:05:58
options again depends on where you are
  • 00:06:00
where you're coming from and then um for
  • 00:06:04
    specifically international students you
  • 00:06:06
request your I20 and initiate the visa
  • 00:06:09
process um just keep in mind that that
  • 00:06:11
could be a lengthy process so the faster
  • 00:06:13
that you submit your statement of intent
  • 00:06:16
the faster you get this uh you know
  • 00:06:18
    paperwork/process going um and it'll
  • 00:06:21
help you just um join USC a little
  • 00:06:25
quicker and then um speaking of the
  • 00:06:28
statement of intent we want you to check
  • 00:06:31
um your uh statement of intent uh to
  • 00:06:34
verify what the last day you can submit
  • 00:06:37
is so most of them will have a
  • 00:06:39
commitment deadline of April 15 um but
  • 00:06:41
again it is your responsibility to check
  • 00:06:44
on that and obviously um you are still
  • 00:06:46
deciding and you know have time to um
  • 00:06:49
figure things out but definitely keep
  • 00:06:51
that in mind and then um we do want to
  • 00:06:54
encourage you um to submit any financial
  • 00:06:56
documents um this is especially for
  • 00:06:59
international students who need um an
  • 00:07:02
I20 process um and you can scan that QR
  • 00:07:05
code if you want to learn a little bit
  • 00:07:06
more about that um but I will say that
  • 00:07:09
financial documents will be required to
  • 00:07:11
be submitted um using the Trojan
  • 00:07:13
international system that is the portal
  • 00:07:16
where you submit all your documents to
  • 00:07:18
get processed um please do not email
  • 00:07:20
them to us um we do not handle this
  • 00:07:23
directly there is a separate system for
  • 00:07:25
this um and again it's easier for you
  • 00:07:27
just to go through the system and then
  • 00:07:29
    um get processed
  • 00:07:31
    quicker
  • 00:07:33
and that being said um the other thing I
  • 00:07:36
do want to encourage you again wherever
  • 00:07:38
you may be in your um cycle deciding
  • 00:07:42
still exploring waiting on some schools
  • 00:07:44
we totally understand but I do highly
  • 00:07:46
encourage you to chat with a student
  • 00:07:48
ambassador so you can connect directly
  • 00:07:50
with our graduate student ambassadors i
  • 00:07:52
have more than 25 current students um
  • 00:07:55
from diverse backgrounds and you know
  • 00:07:57
    across engineering disciplines that can
  • 00:08:00
share their experiences and answer your
  • 00:08:02
    questions they are available
  • 00:08:04
247 so if you want to go ahead and chat
  • 00:08:07
with them um there is a QR code they
  • 00:08:09
also have an Instagram where you can
  • 00:08:11
reach out um but basically they will
  • 00:08:14
help you um with any questions that you
  • 00:08:16
may have again a lot of our students are
  • 00:08:18
    international students everybody has a
  • 00:08:20
different story um and they are willing
  • 00:08:22
to share that with you and you know give
  • 00:08:25
the give you any tips or tricks that you
  • 00:08:27
may um need you know maybe just
  • 00:08:29
transitioning into USC um wherever you
  • 00:08:32
may be are it could be a little bit
  • 00:08:34
difficult for you to come to USC um and
  • 00:08:37
they all understand that some of them
  • 00:08:39
have been there um so yeah definitely
  • 00:08:41
definitely encourage you to um message
  • 00:08:44
them um they can also take you on a
  • 00:08:46
campus tour if you wish all you have to
  • 00:08:48
do is chat with them and ask them and
  • 00:08:51
they are more than um happy to help you
  • 00:08:54
    with
  • 00:08:55
that um and then part of our um you know
  • 00:09:00
just resource here is for you to um be
  • 00:09:04

  • 00:09:07

and and give you a little bit of
  • 00:10:35
background on the program um there's my
  • 00:10:38
contact information there my email and
  • 00:10:40
if you want a little more about me the
  • 00:10:42
website there i'm happy to if you have
  • 00:10:45
questions now or if or afterwards if you
  • 00:10:48
want to email me I'd be more than happy
  • 00:10:49
to respond to that go ahead
  • 00:10:55
David do I do I have control no I don't
  • 00:10:58
    have control
  • 00:11:00
um I'm going to cut in here for a little
  • 00:11:02
bit and then Bruce is going to go ahead
  • 00:11:03
and take over to talk about the
  • 00:11:05
curriculum but my name is Tiffany Castro
  • 00:11:07
i am a USC alum so I am a fellow Trojan
  • 00:11:11
um I am the primary analytics adviser so
  • 00:11:13
any questions you need in terms of
  • 00:11:15
academics um any questions you have in
  • 00:11:18
regards to like CPT or anything like
  • 00:11:21
that I will be your go-to contact so
  • 00:11:23
think of me as your main um person to go
  • 00:11:26
to and then after that if I need to
  • 00:11:29
refer you or direct you to a different
  • 00:11:31
office depending on what your inquiry is
  • 00:11:33
I will be the person that you will
  • 00:11:35
contact um I am located in the
  • 00:11:38
gerontology building in room 240C so
  • 00:11:42
most of my appointments are either
  • 00:11:44
online or in person and then my contact
  • 00:11:46
    information is down below at
  • 00:11:48
    taccastroc.edu
  • 00:11:51
you will be receiving emails from me um
  • 00:11:53
as we get closer to the start of the
  • 00:11:55
fall semester and hopefully you decide
  • 00:11:57
to join us so yeah we're really great uh
  • 00:12:00
really happy to have you here and hope
  • 00:12:02
    you will enjoy our presentation
  • 00:12:08
okay I guess it's back to me here as I
  • 00:12:10
got just a few quick slides trying to
  • 00:12:11
give you a big picture overview of the
  • 00:12:13
program i want to start with um the
  • 00:12:15
    industrial and systems engineering
  • 00:12:17
department is a department within the
  • 00:12:18
Veter School of Engineering here at USC
  • 00:12:21
some of you may may be less familiar
  • 00:12:23
    with industrial and systems engineering
  • 00:12:25
than others it's a it's not every school
  • 00:12:27
not every school has such a department
  • 00:12:29
although it's not at all unusual either
  • 00:12:31
this department has been around at USC
  • 00:12:33
for long time since the 1940s I believe
  • 00:12:36
    but industrial and systems engineering
  • 00:12:38
is as the f first bullet said is all
  • 00:12:41
    about applying advanced engineering
  • 00:12:44
tools and technologies to solve business
  • 00:12:47
problems in some sense I think we're
  • 00:12:49
sort of the bridge between the business
  • 00:12:50
schools and the engineering school um
  • 00:12:53
and and as such it's a natural home for
  • 00:12:56
    an analytics analytics program because
  • 00:12:58
analytics as a second bullet said
  • 00:13:00
analytics is a is is a inherently a
  • 00:13:03
    multid-disciplinary field with the
  • 00:13:05
primary skills uh that we teach and that
  • 00:13:08
and that are required to practice in
  • 00:13:09
this field as as statistics as
  • 00:13:12
programming and as business analysis and
  • 00:13:14
that's quite a wide variety and that
  • 00:13:16
which I think makes it a natural fit for
  • 00:13:19
    a industrial systems engineering
  • 00:13:20
department and as a third bullet As such
  • 00:13:23
our our students come from all of those
  • 00:13:25
disciplines we we have a lot of a lot of
  • 00:13:27
    students enter computer science with
  • 00:13:29
    statistics and mathematics other forms
  • 00:13:32
of engineering backgrounds but also with
  • 00:13:35
social sciences background you know so
  • 00:13:37
long as you have a reasonably strong
  • 00:13:39
background and track record in in
  • 00:13:42
    quantitative disciplines STEM
  • 00:13:43
    disciplines like statistics and
  • 00:13:45
programming um you know so we our our
  • 00:13:48
    student body is academically very
  • 00:13:50
diverse and um which which fits well the
  • 00:13:54
    field of
  • 00:13:55
analytics go ahead David which I'm going
  • 00:13:57
to define now in the next slide here the
  • 00:13:59
um you you're you're probably all aware
  • 00:14:01
you know that there we got these terms
  • 00:14:04
analytics and data science i'm always
  • 00:14:05
asked what's the difference why why do
  • 00:14:08
we have these two programs you know USC
  • 00:14:10
has a data science program as well and
  • 00:14:12
    as as do many schools
  • 00:14:15
um it it it's a it's a little bit uh
  • 00:14:18
hard to hard to clarify at first because
  • 00:14:21
there's significant overlap in the tools
  • 00:14:23
and technologies that are used and we we
  • 00:14:25
we cover largely the same tools R SQL
  • 00:14:29
    Python Tableau cloud platforms
  • 00:14:33
etc but for different focus you know an
  • 00:14:36
analytics fitting in the nature of
  • 00:14:38
    industrial and systems engineering
  • 00:14:39
department is all about using these
  • 00:14:41
tools to analyze and improve business
  • 00:14:44
    processes uh by enhancing decision-
  • 00:14:46
    making operational efficiency quality um
  • 00:14:50
whereas data science you know which
  • 00:14:52
which you know we we certainly teach
  • 00:14:54
    those skills they're they're they're all
  • 00:14:56
kind of under the same umbrella but
  • 00:14:58
focus is more on actually developing
  • 00:15:00
data products so um if you're interested
  • 00:15:04
in the technologies but want to apply
  • 00:15:06
them to business problems I think
  • 00:15:08
analytics is is is a good fit for you
  • 00:15:11
you know go the next slide please and
  • 00:15:12
    the
  • 00:15:13
um you know so the what's the benefits
  • 00:15:16
here you know one one one is that our
  • 00:15:17
    our analytics professionals and our
  • 00:15:19
graduates are employed in almost every
  • 00:15:21
industry you can imagine and in
  • 00:15:23
companies large and small I mean you
  • 00:15:25
know the the major fields you know
  • 00:15:26
healthcare uh finance retail but you
  • 00:15:30
know our our our our alumni and not just
  • 00:15:33
    our alumni analytics professionals are
  • 00:15:34
pro are employed in every industry um
  • 00:15:38
they often say can see the immediate
  • 00:15:40
impact of their work because the an the
  • 00:15:43
analysis that we do directly influences
  • 00:15:46
    business decisions and outcomes
  • 00:15:48
analytics um analytics people are I
  • 00:15:52
    always say every analytics professional
  • 00:15:54
is a consultant some of our students go
  • 00:15:57
into consulting many do not many go work
  • 00:15:59
    in-house in large corporations but
  • 00:16:01
    they're essentially internal consultants
  • 00:16:04
they almost always work with business
  • 00:16:06
    business uh um stakeholders business
  • 00:16:08
professionals so you know uh third
  • 00:16:11
bullet here various industries finance I
  • 00:16:13
guess I already said this marketing
  • 00:16:14
healthcare and more um and uh so that's
  • 00:16:18
kind of how I distinguish the data
  • 00:16:21
    science from analytics they're both
  • 00:16:22
fuzzy terms often they're used to mean
  • 00:16:24
the same thing but that to me is the key
  • 00:16:27
difference go ahead um quickly on our
  • 00:16:32
program I don't know how I'll turn it
  • 00:16:33
over to Tiffany here in a slide or two
  • 00:16:34
but quickly our program you know is is
  • 00:16:37
as you're maybe aware if you looked at
  • 00:16:39
the catalog requires 28 credits most of
  • 00:16:42
our classes are four credit classes so
  • 00:16:44
that's seven classes most of our
  • 00:16:46
students finish in three or four
  • 00:16:48
semesters uh many many opt for a program
  • 00:16:51
of um of uh eight credits eight credits
  • 00:16:54
for their first three semesters and four
  • 00:16:56
in their last semester to give them time
  • 00:16:58
    to focus on job
  • 00:17:00
searches our our program has three
  • 00:17:03
required core classes which are listed
  • 00:17:05
    there and a project-based required
  • 00:17:08
elective class and then 12 credits which
  • 00:17:10
is basically three four credit classes
  • 00:17:13
    of electives
  • 00:17:17
so we are with this program is designed
  • 00:17:20
to help our students to enable our
  • 00:17:23
    students to get highquality professional
  • 00:17:25
employment and we have had a good very
  • 00:17:28
good track record of placing of our
  • 00:17:30
alumni getting placed in major uh uh
  • 00:17:34
corporations all across the US and in
  • 00:17:36
Southern California and beyond uh and
  • 00:17:39
the core classes are designed to proide
  • 00:17:41
    provide that foundation
  • 00:17:43
uh our my assumption our assumption in
  • 00:17:46
designing the program is that most of
  • 00:17:48
the students that's their goal some of
  • 00:17:49
our students do go for PhDs but most of
  • 00:17:52
our students their goal is to get a uh
  • 00:17:54
is to get a professional position in in
  • 00:17:56
    in analytics um after
  • 00:17:59
graduation so the the core classes are
  • 00:18:02
designed to give the foundation for all
  • 00:18:04
of all aspects of analytics we and then
  • 00:18:07
this series of electives allow you to
  • 00:18:09
specialize a bit into one of three or
  • 00:18:12
four in my mind sub fields of
  • 00:18:14
analytics some of you these terms will
  • 00:18:16
be familiar to some of you data
  • 00:18:18
engineering a very hot field now and um
  • 00:18:21
uh employing a lot of people including a
  • 00:18:24
lot of our alumni um data science which
  • 00:18:27
is more the the algorithmic and
  • 00:18:28
    mathematical aspects data analysis which
  • 00:18:31
is more the u business uh applications
  • 00:18:35
of uh of uh performing the analyses and
  • 00:18:37
    interpreting the results and machine
  • 00:18:40
learning engineering which is kind of
  • 00:18:41
    the the more infrastructure oriented
  • 00:18:45
platforms and and with a heavy emphasis
  • 00:18:47
on cloud platforms so as such we've uh
  • 00:18:50
we've crafted uh we've offer electives
  • 00:18:53
in in all of those areas here uh and
  • 00:18:56
these are some of our representative
  • 00:18:57
elective classes that we that we choose
  • 00:18:59
from um and I I'm not going to read
  • 00:19:02
through this list here but but electives
  • 00:19:05
that enable you to go deeper into the
  • 00:19:07
    the different sub fields of
  • 00:19:11
analytics um there you'll note here on
  • 00:19:14
the on that on the slide we had a couple
  • 00:19:16
asterises we are actually in the middle
  • 00:19:18
    of upgrading upgrading modernizing our
  • 00:19:20
curriculum and um we we will be offering
  • 00:19:24
it's not we it's not official in our
  • 00:19:26
catalog yet we have a we have a process
  • 00:19:28
to go through on that but within a month
  • 00:19:30
or two um we'll be following up more
  • 00:19:32
information we're creating a new core
  • 00:19:34
    class called foundations of analytics
  • 00:19:36
which the intention is for every for all
  • 00:19:38
of you to take in your first semester
  • 00:19:41
one of the goals of that is most of our
  • 00:19:44
students that enter in the fall are
  • 00:19:47
actively looking by by October November
  • 00:19:50
    December time frame we're actively
  • 00:19:51
looking for summer internships and so
  • 00:19:54
part of our goal is we want to get you
  • 00:19:55
enough skills in that first semester
  • 00:19:58
that you can that you can compete for
  • 00:19:59
those internships and then perform on
  • 00:20:02
them so this class is is covers all the
  • 00:20:04
basics the basic skills that that in
  • 00:20:07
that companies who are hiring interns
  • 00:20:09
are looking for um so that that's one of
  • 00:20:12
the new classes several other new
  • 00:20:14
    several other new analytics elective
  • 00:20:15
classes are being added to the
  • 00:20:16
curriculum we expect them to get improve
  • 00:20:19
get approved in the May time frame but
  • 00:20:21
you know there's a whole process to go
  • 00:20:23
through that you will be notified when
  • 00:20:25
those changes are in effect and the of
  • 00:20:27
course the link there on the bottom is
  • 00:20:29
the um always has the current version of
  • 00:20:32
    of the catalog requirements
  • 00:20:35
um so the um here's a sample academic
  • 00:20:39
plan so in your first semester u
  • 00:20:42
    currently uh predictive analytics and
  • 00:20:44
fundamentals of data engineering are the
  • 00:20:46
standard classes to take these are both
  • 00:20:47
required classes this will be modified
  • 00:20:50
some somewhat in that the fundamentals
  • 00:20:52
of data engineering will be replaced by
  • 00:20:54
the new class called foundations of
  • 00:20:56
analytics not a not a major adjustment
  • 00:20:59
here and so the recommendation is that
  • 00:21:02
in your first two semesters you get the
  • 00:21:04
three required classes done select one
  • 00:21:07
of your analytics electives in the
  • 00:21:08
second class and kind of in the
  • 00:21:10
    direction you want to focus
  • 00:21:13
    uh there's a requirement for a
  • 00:21:14
    project-based elective a class that's
  • 00:21:17
that involves a major project and that
  • 00:21:19
could be taken second third or fourth
  • 00:21:22
semester but we recommend and most of
  • 00:21:23
the students take it in their third
  • 00:21:25
semester and then um and then leaving
  • 00:21:28
the uh the the other two electives one
  • 00:21:30
of which is from a selected list of
  • 00:21:32
analytics classes and the other which is
  • 00:21:35
uh which need which can be taken more
  • 00:21:37
broadly from the engineering school or
  • 00:21:39
the university as a whole um with the
  • 00:21:41
    approval of your
  • 00:21:44
advisor um and I I want to say one more
  • 00:21:46
thing then I'm gonna turn turn this over
  • 00:21:47
to to you Tiffany here um so I I just
  • 00:21:50
wanted to emphasize that we in addition
  • 00:21:53
to designing our curriculum to help you
  • 00:21:57
    um achieve the professional employment
  • 00:21:59
that many of you are seeking uh we have
  • 00:22:02
a lot of other initiatives to help you
  • 00:22:04
with that we have an active alumni group
  • 00:22:06
of analytics professionals um who we we
  • 00:22:10
    have we've had we have
  • 00:22:11
monthly mixers or panel discussions with
  • 00:22:15
our alumni we have a new uh um analytic
  • 00:22:19
    student association that's arranging for
  • 00:22:21
both the u these interactions with our
  • 00:22:24
alumni with other professionals in the
  • 00:22:26
field um and um and and other social
  • 00:22:30
events among the students so that that's
  • 00:22:32
a major focus here of our program um I
  • 00:22:35
am going to um turn it over here now to
  • 00:22:38
Tiffany i I do have to leave at 5:30 our
  • 00:22:41
time so about 8 minutes here so if
  • 00:22:43
anybody wants to pop any questions in
  • 00:22:45
the chat before I leave I'll I'll handle
  • 00:22:47
them then if not you can always reach
  • 00:22:48
out to me through the contact
  • 00:22:50
    information you have
  • 00:22:53
awesome Bruce thank you so much for that
  • 00:22:55
    breakdown and providing that additional
  • 00:22:56
insight within our curriculum and what
  • 00:22:58
students can expect from the um could
  • 00:23:00
expect from the analytics program um so
  • 00:23:03
I'm going to go ahead and um talk to you
  • 00:23:05
guys about some key fall dates to keep
  • 00:23:07
in mind so in August we do have many
  • 00:23:11
orientations so August 13th we'll have
  • 00:23:14
our online campus orientation for master
  • 00:23:17
students and then on August 15th will be
  • 00:23:20
the onampus orientation um and then on
  • 00:23:23
August 20th we'll have our analytics
  • 00:23:25
information session that will be in
  • 00:23:27
person and on August 25th we'll be h
  • 00:23:30
will be the start of our fall
  • 00:23:33
2025 semester um little bit of a typo
  • 00:23:37
there um but we'll be very excited to uh
  • 00:23:40
see you guys at the orientations and
  • 00:23:42
also in our information session where
  • 00:23:44
we'll be able to go more into depth of
  • 00:23:46
what to expect what will what will be
  • 00:23:49
happening during the fall semester then
  • 00:23:51
we have some important dates in spring
  • 00:23:53
and October so we do have a couple of
  • 00:23:54
holidays and a fall recess but most
  • 00:23:57
importantly the dates to note is
  • 00:23:59
September 5th which is the last day to
  • 00:24:01
add courses and September 12th which is
  • 00:24:04
the last day to drop a course with
  • 00:24:05
tuition refund um as you guys are coming
  • 00:24:09
into the program as you saw in the
  • 00:24:10
sample plan we do recommend that
  • 00:24:12
incoming students take only two courses
  • 00:24:15
um for their first semester so that you
  • 00:24:17
guys are able to transition into the
  • 00:24:19
program lead you to a successful start
  • 00:24:23
um however if there's anything you would
  • 00:24:25
like to talk about or if you have any
  • 00:24:27
doubts and maybe want to drop a course
  • 00:24:30
or there's things that are happening
  • 00:24:32
please speak with me so that we make
  • 00:24:33
sure that we don't miss those deadlines
  • 00:24:35
and then towards the end of the semester
  • 00:24:37
so November fall we do have a couple
  • 00:24:39
more holidays and our Thanksgiving break
  • 00:24:41
uh but we do have final exams set for
  • 00:24:44
December 10th through the 17th your
  • 00:24:46
final exams can vary from actual exams
  • 00:24:49
in class and or projects or papers or
  • 00:24:52
reports that are due and these will all
  • 00:24:55
be listed in your syllabus once you've
  • 00:24:57
registered for your courses for the fall
  • 00:25:01
    semester expected communications so as
  • 00:25:04
Bruce mentioned we are in the process of
  • 00:25:07
having a bit of a curriculum update um
  • 00:25:10
we are hoping to have um those
  • 00:25:12
    curriculum update information by May
  • 00:25:17
hopefully hopefully by May latest June
  • 00:25:20
so once we have those final curriculum
  • 00:25:22
    approvals expect to receive email
  • 00:25:24
communications from me to your USC
  • 00:25:26
emails so once you have decided to join
  • 00:25:29
us and have access to your USC portal
  • 00:25:32
it's very important that you do check
  • 00:25:34
your USC email because that's where most
  • 00:25:36
of our communications will be sent to
  • 00:25:38
your first communication will be within
  • 00:25:40
the first two weeks of July and in this
  • 00:25:43
uh notification you'll be receiving the
  • 00:25:45
    curriculum notice whether it was
  • 00:25:47
approved or if things are changing and
  • 00:25:49
    then any information regarding fall
  • 00:25:51
    registration typically for our incoming
  • 00:25:54
cohorts since we do recommend you take
  • 00:25:56
the first two core courses you'll
  • 00:25:58
receive declarance ahead of time and so
  • 00:26:01
all of that will be explained to you via
  • 00:26:02
email along with a couple of PDFs for
  • 00:26:05
you um that will have instruction in
  • 00:26:08
there and if you do have any questions
  • 00:26:10
always feel free to email me either on
  • 00:26:12
that email thread or separately and then
  • 00:26:15
a second communication will be sent to
  • 00:26:17
you in the first week of August this
  • 00:26:19
will be a reminder of our upcoming MS
  • 00:26:22
    analytics information session for our
  • 00:26:24
new students as well as um a reminder
  • 00:26:27
    about fall registration information um
  • 00:26:30
so that you can go ahead and start
  • 00:26:32
registering for your courses um this
  • 00:26:34
will vary if you are a domestic student
  • 00:26:37
um you'll be able to register for your
  • 00:26:38
courses a little bit sooner um if you
  • 00:26:41
are an international student you will
  • 00:26:43
have to clear the STO50 hold which is um
  • 00:26:46
just you once you arrive on campus you
  • 00:26:49
meet with OIS and they'll go ahead and
  • 00:26:51
clear that hold and you'll be able to
  • 00:26:52
register for your courses but since we
  • 00:26:55
are anticipating for you guys to be here
  • 00:26:57
we do have allocated seating for you and
  • 00:26:59
I will make sure that you have that
  • 00:27:00
declarance ready for once your 250 hold
  • 00:27:03
    is removed
  • 00:27:10
and then we have some questions and uh
  • 00:27:13
Q&As's and then I know we're going to
  • 00:27:15
let some of our student speakers go
  • 00:27:18
ahead and answer the the cardinal
  • 00:27:21
questions and then I'll answer the gold
  • 00:27:23
questions but I'll let go I'll let David
  • 00:27:25
go ahead and MC the Q&As's
  • 00:27:28
actually Tiffany and David I see we have
  • 00:27:29
a question in the chat I thought I'd try
  • 00:27:31
to take before I left um George writes
  • 00:27:34
uh hold on let me let me read it here um
  • 00:27:37
oh it disappeared but the question was
  • 00:27:39
basically how how intense is the math in
  • 00:27:41
the program um statistics is an
  • 00:27:43
important um aspect of analytics um
  • 00:27:46
however we recognize that uh a
  • 00:27:50
    significant percentage of our students
  • 00:27:52
have have it's it's been a few years and
  • 00:27:55
are a little bit hazy on their on their
  • 00:27:57
background on math and statistics and in
  • 00:27:59
the in the first semester we kind of do
  • 00:28:02
do a refresher on particularly the
  • 00:28:04
statistics that's required for the class
  • 00:28:06
i noticed in your in your um question
  • 00:28:09
you said you had taken some machine
  • 00:28:11
learning classes i I suspect that you
  • 00:28:13
covered some statistics in those classes
  • 00:28:15
unless it was taught purely as an
  • 00:28:16
algorithmic class um so I guess my qu my
  • 00:28:20
answer when you say math I distinguish
  • 00:28:22
    math from statistics i don't think I
  • 00:28:24
would not say it's math heavy it is it
  • 00:28:25
is statistics does have a stat
  • 00:28:28
    significant component of statistics but
  • 00:28:30
we we make no big assumptions coming in
  • 00:28:33
you know some of our students are
  • 00:28:35
statistics undergrads and come in with a
  • 00:28:37
lot of background most of them don't
  • 00:28:39
most of our students come in with a one
  • 00:28:41
    or two undergraduate classes in
  • 00:28:43
statistics often couple years in the
  • 00:28:45
past and and uh so in our first semester
  • 00:28:49
we we make a real effort to get
  • 00:28:50
everybody up to speed so um I think it
  • 00:28:53
was George asked the question i before I
  • 00:28:55
disappear here um if any if there's any
  • 00:28:58
    follow-ups on
  • 00:29:02
that okay hope that hope that hope that
  • 00:29:05
    answered
  • 00:29:08
it thanks Dr wilcox i know you have to
  • 00:29:11
run the class so uh thanks for
  • 00:29:14
participating uh and with our FAQ
  • 00:29:18
    frequently asked question and Q&A
  • 00:29:19
question and answer portion I do want to
  • 00:29:22
    introduce our student ambassadors so
  • 00:29:25
Gini and Ginshi if you could go ahead
  • 00:29:28
and uh unmute yourselves and introduce
  • 00:29:30
    yourselves
  • 00:29:34
oh sure uh I think I can go ahead first
  • 00:29:39
    all
  • 00:29:40
right and thanks thanks the sharing of
  • 00:29:43
Brooks actually I'm in the Bruce class
  • 00:29:45
right now so I'm skipping the class so I
  • 00:29:48
was so surprised to see Bruce was was
  • 00:29:50
here you know because I I was supposed
  • 00:29:52
to in the classroom right now
  • 00:29:55
yeah I I'm a first year second semester
  • 00:29:59
analytical students right now and uh
  • 00:30:02
this semester I'm taking two courses all
  • 00:30:04
by Bruce so yeah he's he's a man and
  • 00:30:10
yeah I'm here to answer any questions
  • 00:30:13
from the students and uh don't be shy uh
  • 00:30:17
and we are here to help
  • 00:30:20
oh hi i'm G and it's my third semester
  • 00:30:23
here so uh I do have Bruce's class
  • 00:30:26
tomorrow so I don't have any conflict
  • 00:30:29
and please feel free to ask any question
  • 00:30:32
also include any question in life about
  • 00:30:34
    USC or any concerns
  • 00:30:38
okay well thank you Jenshi and Jini
  • 00:30:41
um we're just going to dive right into
  • 00:30:43
it first questions uh what are classes
  • 00:30:46
like what is the demand of the
  • 00:30:48
coursework and what has been your
  • 00:30:50
favorite class or classes thus far
  • 00:30:55
uh oh we're going to ask this question
  • 00:30:58
right yes okay uh I think the on average
  • 00:31:02
in every semester you're going to take
  • 00:31:04
two classes and how demanding is the
  • 00:31:08
coursework uh regularly is the one
  • 00:31:11
homework per week so a homework per two
  • 00:31:14
classes and my favorite class is a class
  • 00:31:18
I took last semester called um
  • 00:31:21
    optimization methods i think mainly
  • 00:31:23
because my major when I was in undergrad
  • 00:31:25
is math and that course is mainly on
  • 00:31:29
math so I think I think that that's my
  • 00:31:32
my area and my and the skill set match
  • 00:31:36
perfectly with my background so uh I
  • 00:31:39
handle well on that course so that's why
  • 00:31:42
and I and I'm doing a greater this
  • 00:31:44
semester for that class so that's why I
  • 00:31:47
have some like special feelings for that
  • 00:31:50
for the knowledge in statistics and uh
  • 00:31:53
some linear programming stuff and do you
  • 00:31:57
feel safe and around campus yeah I take
  • 00:32:00
a huge advantage of the free lift
  • 00:32:02
program i literally took free lift every
  • 00:32:05
day so I would say it keeps it keeps us
  • 00:32:08
I'll say it's a safe uh safe around the
  • 00:32:13
campus especially if you live in the DPS
  • 00:32:16
area and how did you find your housing
  • 00:32:19
and roommates uh currently I I'm living
  • 00:32:23
    in a 5B 4B uh house and I find I find a
  • 00:32:29
housing by on WeChat and with random
  • 00:32:33
    roommate and
  • 00:32:35
currently my form roommates uh two of
  • 00:32:39
them are local student from US and two
  • 00:32:42
of them are from China and they all in
  • 00:32:46
Verbby program so yeah and and they're
  • 00:32:49
al they're master student as well and
  • 00:32:53
what do you do for fun in LA um I joined
  • 00:32:57
    the tennis club in
  • 00:32:59
uh in in USC and I I'll say it's pretty
  • 00:33:03
fun the only part is that we need to
  • 00:33:07
play off campus but we can take the free
  • 00:33:09
metro by the uh metro program usc
  • 00:33:14
provide free uh metro pass for students
  • 00:33:18
so we can take the metro to the off-c
  • 00:33:20
campus court pretty convenient so I
  • 00:33:22
    would say not too bad
  • 00:33:25
sounds really cool so about me uh I
  • 00:33:30
think for the classes uh it mainly take
  • 00:33:33
about like two hours for each either
  • 00:33:38
Monday or Wednesday Tuesday or Thursday
  • 00:33:40
like for two days per week for the class
  • 00:33:43
and the course load really depends on
  • 00:33:47
which class you are taking like for
  • 00:33:49
professor Bruce he do have assignment
  • 00:33:51
for each week and I do have another
  • 00:33:53
professor that maybe two to three weeks
  • 00:33:56
have one homework uh it really depends
  • 00:33:59
on the content and the things that you
  • 00:34:03
are study for uh one of my favorite
  • 00:34:05
course was 535 data mining course uh the
  • 00:34:10
professor h but he was gone he he went
  • 00:34:12
back to Texas like uh he changed his
  • 00:34:16
final exam into a final project because
  • 00:34:19
so many student want a project that can
  • 00:34:23
prove what they learn from the class and
  • 00:34:25
that's something that I think is really
  • 00:34:27
cool that we can talk to professor and
  • 00:34:30
negotiate to talk about our uh desire
  • 00:34:34
for for the resume or for something that
  • 00:34:37
we really need and that's one of really
  • 00:34:41
impressive class that I I've ever took
  • 00:34:44
because it all I took it on my first
  • 00:34:46
semester so that's really impressive for
  • 00:34:48
me and uh for leave around campus I'm
  • 00:34:55
living nearby number 10 highway so it's
  • 00:34:58
a it's one road away from DPS area and
  • 00:35:03
recently like I feel more safer than
  • 00:35:06
before because from last year there were
  • 00:35:08
some homeless cars that even drive by
  • 00:35:11
and also stopped by my house but in this
  • 00:35:14
year maybe because of the policy or
  • 00:35:17
maybe Trump I don't know they all left
  • 00:35:20
and I feel really safe than before and I
  • 00:35:22
can feel that some police are going
  • 00:35:25
around and I can take lift if I need
  • 00:35:28
when it was really late when I study at
  • 00:35:30
library so it's it's pretty safe to stay
  • 00:35:34
nearby and uh my roommates are all from
  • 00:35:38
China and even one of them are from same
  • 00:35:42
area as mine so we really have a really
  • 00:35:45
good friendship we go hang out together
  • 00:35:47
and have food together so I think
  • 00:35:50
roomies are really like we we we are
  • 00:35:53
really good roommates we are basically
  • 00:35:56
friends together right now and some
  • 00:35:59
things that I do feel fan in LA is that
  • 00:36:03
personally I do like to go to galleries
  • 00:36:05
or gardens i've been to uh Getty Gallery
  • 00:36:10
for a couple of times and also for the
  • 00:36:12
Huntington Library so I can drive there
  • 00:36:15
to feel the environment feel the
  • 00:36:19
knowledge or culture that this area have
  • 00:36:22
that's something I feel really fun
  • 00:36:24
    really cool
  • 00:36:27
thank you for sharing and thank you for
  • 00:36:28
    your cander
  • 00:36:30
    Gi
  • 00:36:31
um hang tight we'll get back to you
  • 00:36:34
tiffany I wanted to ask you if I'm a
  • 00:36:36
student and let's say I have limited
  • 00:36:38
    Python background because maybe my
  • 00:36:41
undergraduate studies were in finance or
  • 00:36:44
business um what courses can I take to
  • 00:36:47
improve my programming skills yeah so as
  • 00:36:50
Bruce mentioned that um our analytic
  • 00:36:53
    students come from multid-disciplinary
  • 00:36:56
um backgrounds and so some of them can
  • 00:36:59
be STEMheavy some of them come from the
  • 00:37:00
social behavioral sciences and so the
  • 00:37:03
reason why we require or we recommend
  • 00:37:05
you take the two um core courses your
  • 00:37:08
first semester is because it will
  • 00:37:11
provide a review of what to expect for
  • 00:37:13
the program and also brush up any skills
  • 00:37:16
that you need moving forward um those
  • 00:37:19
courses um were listed earlier and we
  • 00:37:22
will share this with you and I will also
  • 00:37:25
provide this information on the fall
  • 00:37:26
registration and those courses are ISC
  • 00:37:29
529 and ISC 558 um some students would
  • 00:37:33
typically take ISC 529 and ISC 530 with
  • 00:37:37
ISC 530 being optimization um but since
  • 00:37:40
it is very math heavy um and we
  • 00:37:43
understand that some of our students
  • 00:37:44
need to brush up a little bit on their
  • 00:37:46
math we kind of were starting to
  • 00:37:47
recommend that course to be geared
  • 00:37:49
towards their second semester instead of
  • 00:37:51
their first semester just so that they
  • 00:37:53
feel confident in their skills and are
  • 00:37:55
able to establish um a good first
  • 00:37:58
    semester within the program
  • 00:38:01
    and
  • 00:38:02
to one more question for you Tiffany um
  • 00:38:06
as far as electives so again I'm a
  • 00:38:08
student i look at the curriculum and I
  • 00:38:11
see what are these advisor approved
  • 00:38:13
electives um what can I take with these
  • 00:38:16
advisor approved electives and where can
  • 00:38:18
I find them yes so for advisor appro
  • 00:38:21
approved electives um a majority of our
  • 00:38:24
ISC 500 level courses that are four
  • 00:38:26
units are part of that elective
  • 00:38:28
    pre-approved elective group um since
  • 00:38:31
they do meet the standards to meet the
  • 00:38:33
    analytics elective requirements um those
  • 00:38:36
can be found in your handbook as well as
  • 00:38:39
a PDF that I will be sharing with you
  • 00:38:41
guys when I send out the fall
  • 00:38:42
registration information um we also are
  • 00:38:46
pretty lenient when it comes to our
  • 00:38:48
electives since we do understand that
  • 00:38:49
students are going to attempt different
  • 00:38:52
    backgrounds of professional fields and
  • 00:38:54
so there may be courses outside of the
  • 00:38:56
    ISC department that they're interested
  • 00:38:58
in taking and so if there is a course
  • 00:39:01
that you're interested in and it's not
  • 00:39:02
on our pre-approved elective list let's
  • 00:39:05
say it's like a computer science course
  • 00:39:06
if you want to do something that's has a
  • 00:39:08
little bit more program heavy background
  • 00:39:11
or it's a course from the Marshall
  • 00:39:13
School of Business so that you're able
  • 00:39:15
to develop those soft skills in terms of
  • 00:39:18
like business and management as Bruce
  • 00:39:20
mentioned analytics is kind of that
  • 00:39:21
    bridge between engineering and business
  • 00:39:24
and so we do offer that to our students
  • 00:39:27
where if they see something that they
  • 00:39:29
believe that will benefit them they let
  • 00:39:32
us know what course that is and we'll
  • 00:39:33
review it just to ensure that it'll meet
  • 00:39:35
our elective requirements and we'll go
  • 00:39:38
ahead and approve it if so and if not
  • 00:39:40
since we will already know what it is
  • 00:39:42
that you're looking for we can recommend
  • 00:39:44
    electives um that are already
  • 00:39:47
preapproved that will meet that criteria
  • 00:39:49
    for you
  • 00:39:51
    thank you Tiffany
  • 00:39:53
    uh for the student
  • 00:39:55
ambassadors what is one thing that you
  • 00:39:58
wish you would have known prior to
  • 00:40:01
coming to USC like you maybe you had a
  • 00:40:04
mentor or a senior that provided you
  • 00:40:06
some sage advice before entering the
  • 00:40:09
program or LA um what's something you
  • 00:40:12
wish you would have known that you can
  • 00:40:14
kind of provide our new students
  • 00:40:18
yeah the the one thing I wish I I would
  • 00:40:21
know before I came here is that you
  • 00:40:23
should apply for the summer internship
  • 00:40:26
as soon as possible and I know some
  • 00:40:29
people uh even apply start start apply
  • 00:40:32
for the summer internship before they
  • 00:40:34
came to USC so so I would say that's a
  • 00:40:37
huge advantage please if you want to
  • 00:40:40
find a job uh directly after the
  • 00:40:42
graduation it's the perfect time uh
  • 00:40:46
right now actually it's the perfect time
  • 00:40:47
to uh start looking for the positions i
  • 00:40:51
saw a question by uh B on the Q&A
  • 00:40:54
section and uh they're asking that what
  • 00:40:58
career fields and position are you
  • 00:41:00
looking for after graduation uh for me
  • 00:41:02
I'm I'm currently applying for the
  • 00:41:04
summer internship and the positions I'm
  • 00:41:06
applying for uh are data scientist and
  • 00:41:10
data analyst so right now it's March
  • 00:41:13
maybe it's a little bit too early but uh
  • 00:41:15
before coming to USC like uh June or
  • 00:41:19
July is the right time to start
  • 00:41:22
considering what do you want to do after
  • 00:41:24
graduation or for the summer internship
  • 00:41:27
so uh do the research and apply for the
  • 00:41:30
uh internships as soon as possible is
  • 00:41:32
the one thing that I wish I could I wish
  • 00:41:35
I would know earlier you know yeah
  • 00:41:41
oh like as Ginti has said so also answer
  • 00:41:46
this question so I'm also applying for
  • 00:41:49
    analytics related background and also
  • 00:41:52
    maybe some business analytics or
  • 00:41:56
    analytics related background when I
  • 00:41:58
search on the LinkedIn or simplify or
  • 00:42:01
any job board uh website um I will say
  • 00:42:06
that my application is even I need to
  • 00:42:11
make it more hairy like I'm going to
  • 00:42:13
graduate in this year so uh for the
  • 00:42:17
error it really depends on which course
  • 00:42:19
you are taking i think for courses like
  • 00:42:22
study for SQL and Tableau they are most
  • 00:42:25
effective for analytic uh positions so
  • 00:42:29
that's something that we mostly apply
  • 00:42:31
for and for data science it need more
  • 00:42:34
Python and more deep skills in the
  • 00:42:36
program skills so that's something that
  • 00:42:39
this program can really provide like a
  • 00:42:41
lot of courses uh in analytics they
  • 00:42:45
provide deep learning for the machine
  • 00:42:47
learning for the Python that's something
  • 00:42:50
really helpful for me to apply for the
  • 00:42:53
job that I needed and yeah that's
  • 00:42:56
basically I can say about it
  • 00:43:00
thank you so now we're going to turn it
  • 00:43:02
    over to
  • 00:43:04
the attendees in this meeting so if you
  • 00:43:07
have any questions please go ahead and
  • 00:43:09
drop them in the chat um you feel free
  • 00:43:12
    to unmute
  • 00:43:13
yourself um yeah we're here take
  • 00:43:17
    advantage of these student
  • 00:43:19
    ambassadors
  • 00:43:21
uh yeah any questions you have
  • 00:43:33
i can get us started with one question i
  • 00:43:35
know they asked for jobs and employment
  • 00:43:38
opportunities but um Jin I think or Gong
  • 00:43:43
sorry I'm use your last name um I know
  • 00:43:45
you are in your second semester so for
  • 00:43:49
CPT have you started looking into CPT or
  • 00:43:52
for internships um now that you're
  • 00:43:54
    meeting that academic eligibility
  • 00:43:56
threshold and for Yin Yi I also want to
  • 00:43:59
ask if you've utilized CPT or have um
  • 00:44:03
looked into any internships um during
  • 00:44:05
    your time here
  • 00:44:07
uh right now I have been applied about
  • 00:44:11
    200 applications to different companies
  • 00:44:14
and for more than 90% of the job
  • 00:44:17
position are data scientist and data
  • 00:44:20
    analyst
  • 00:44:21
uh so uh I got few in uh inter uh
  • 00:44:27
interviews uh past few months and but
  • 00:44:31
only like no more than five so the
  • 00:44:34
conversion rate is really low you need
  • 00:44:36
to apply a lot of do a lot of
  • 00:44:40
applications and the process is will
  • 00:44:44
last very long so you need to be patient
  • 00:44:47
and keep tailoring your resume preparing
  • 00:44:50
your u cover letter so those are really
  • 00:44:55
important things you need to have you
  • 00:44:57
need to be prepared to get ready for
  • 00:45:00
applying for a job so do the
  • 00:45:04
preparations as early as possible yeah
  • 00:45:10
so I I do send out like from last year
  • 00:45:16
uh November I've started to send out my
  • 00:45:18
resume like five each day and it's
  • 00:45:22
approximately 500 to 600 send outs and I
  • 00:45:27
do pass one of the like interview but
  • 00:45:31
it's an unpaid job is about the data
  • 00:45:35
service that is fully remote and I
  • 00:45:38
talked to Tiffany two weeks before about
  • 00:45:41
it because I was applying for this CBT i
  • 00:45:44
got refused uh last week I think maybe
  • 00:45:48
it's not called refuse but something
  • 00:45:50
that I need to add more information or
  • 00:45:53
things that they needed yes so uh they
  • 00:45:56
asked me to revise my like the offer
  • 00:46:00
letter and something that I need to
  • 00:46:02
repair prepare recently because I was
  • 00:46:06
out for the spring recess and I will say
  • 00:46:09
    that
  • 00:46:10
the our CP course uh is kind of worth it
  • 00:46:14
than other department I believe because
  • 00:46:17
we can spend $1,000 for half unit and
  • 00:46:22
you can use it after your first usage
  • 00:46:24
like you can still use this course only
  • 00:46:28
with this ass,000 spend like if you for
  • 00:46:31
instance for my semester if I use it for
  • 00:46:33
my third semester I can still use it for
  • 00:46:36
my summer and for my last semester and
  • 00:46:39
uh the whole process is not really
  • 00:46:41
difficult it's something that you need
  • 00:46:43
to prepare all the information and uh to
  • 00:46:47
    apply it on your my
  • 00:46:50
usc.edu edu website and the department
  • 00:46:55
will tell you that what things that you
  • 00:46:56
need to prepare or need to do uh to make
  • 00:47:00
sure that the whole process is going on
  • 00:47:01
and going well like even for unpaid even
  • 00:47:05
they are not recommended but um I think
  • 00:47:08
CPT is is kind of worth it because I
  • 00:47:11
have never used it before even I have
  • 00:47:13
    opportunity from my undergraduate school
  • 00:47:16
so yeah it it's time worth it to to sp
  • 00:47:21
to spend a lot of time to send our
  • 00:47:23
    resume because of the current
  • 00:47:25
circumstances is pressure and we have
  • 00:47:28
less jobs than before so I spend a lot
  • 00:47:31
of time and really get this result even
  • 00:47:33
it's not really a best or the success
  • 00:47:37
that I really wanted but I think it's
  • 00:47:39
kind of the first step first like thing
  • 00:47:42
that I I've been looking for this long
  • 00:47:45
time so always work for something is
  • 00:47:48
really worth it like I I didn't expect
  • 00:47:51
to get get a job really really this
  • 00:47:54
quick so for something like this yes
  • 00:47:56
just work for it yeah yeah no yeah uni
  • 00:48:00
did we did talk and we did have a
  • 00:48:02
meeting about that so for CPT the
  • 00:48:04
    instructions are pretty clear but
  • 00:48:06
sometimes um as a way for us to protect
  • 00:48:08
our students and making sure that
  • 00:48:10
    everything falls within guidelines there
  • 00:48:12
are some very specific criteria that
  • 00:48:15
needs to be on offer letters for um
  • 00:48:18
    internships for our international
  • 00:48:19
students and so like she mentioned it is
  • 00:48:22
not necessarily a rejection but more so
  • 00:48:25
like we need additional information of
  • 00:48:27
what you're going to be doing making
  • 00:48:28
sure it falls in line and again it's a
  • 00:48:30
way for us to well by us I mean USC to
  • 00:48:33
make sure our students are getting the
  • 00:48:35
    internship that they honestly really
  • 00:48:37
deserve but also making sure that
  • 00:48:39
they're protected and they're going to
  • 00:48:41
get out of it what they're putting into
  • 00:48:43
it um I do see another question on the
  • 00:48:47
chat and this is from George um so he
  • 00:48:51
did mention that he's interested in in
  • 00:48:54
launching a startup after graduation on
  • 00:48:57
the side as well as getting the OPT
  • 00:48:59
training so you were wondering if USC
  • 00:49:02
offers advice on that especially for
  • 00:49:04
international students who wish their to
  • 00:49:06
launch their own startups in California
  • 00:49:09
um I'll answer that on the advisor side
  • 00:49:11
and then I'll let the student um
  • 00:49:13
ambassadors to go ahead and answer that
  • 00:49:15
so for that I would honestly recommend
  • 00:49:17
you talking to VCC which is Verby career
  • 00:49:20
connections it is the career center
  • 00:49:22
office that is specifically for for
  • 00:49:25
Vurby and our engineers um they'll be a
  • 00:49:28
great point of contact they also have
  • 00:49:30
workshops and are able to connect you
  • 00:49:32
with um possible employers or internship
  • 00:49:35
opportunities that help um gear our
  • 00:49:38
    students towards what they're looking
  • 00:49:40
for so that's definitely a resource that
  • 00:49:42
I would recommend you utilize and then
  • 00:49:44
as for OPT OPT is more of a conversation
  • 00:49:47
that we would have towards your final
  • 00:49:49
    semester since international students
  • 00:49:51
are are eligible for OPT 90 days prior
  • 00:49:55
to their graduation date and so if
  • 00:49:58
you're utilizing CPT or if you're able
  • 00:50:00
to utilize CPT through like internships
  • 00:50:03
and build that connection with BCC and
  • 00:50:06
utilize their resources as well you
  • 00:50:08
should be able to find what you're
  • 00:50:10
looking for um when you're able to
  • 00:50:12
utilize the resources that USC gives you
  • 00:50:14
from all the various offices and
  • 00:50:16
departments you'll definitely be able to
  • 00:50:18
find something for you um but then I'll
  • 00:50:21
go ahead and let the students respond
  • 00:50:25
tiffany could you repeat the present for
  • 00:50:27
    us
  • 00:50:28
    yes so the question is
  • 00:50:33
um they were wondering if they had any
  • 00:50:35
advice on the OPT training in terms of
  • 00:50:40
    international students to launch their
  • 00:50:42
startup in California so I know for like
  • 00:50:45
OPT training we would recommend you to
  • 00:50:47
like follow the process with on the
  • 00:50:49
advisor side with OIS and then I would
  • 00:50:52
recommend you to go ahead and utilize
  • 00:50:54
    the VCC connections uh career
  • 00:50:56
connections and or the central USC
  • 00:50:59
career center um as for our student
  • 00:51:02
ambassadors I'm not sure if they'll be
  • 00:51:04
able to answer because they haven't gone
  • 00:51:06
to the point of utilizing OPT just yet
  • 00:51:09
um but David I don't know if you have
  • 00:51:11
anything else to add on to that as our
  • 00:51:13
    director
  • 00:51:15
yeah I would also add speak to faculty
  • 00:51:18
especially Dr wilcox cuz you know all of
  • 00:51:22
    our instructors have a wealth
  • 00:51:24
of work experience not only in the
  • 00:51:27
industry but in academia and so they're
  • 00:51:30
going to be very valuable resources
  • 00:51:32
invaluable resources for you um I would
  • 00:51:36
say getting good with your peers because
  • 00:51:38
obviously they're going to be part of
  • 00:51:39
your network you may eventually hire
  • 00:51:41
some of them um and so I think
  • 00:51:45
unfortunately I think uh Ginchi and Jini
  • 00:51:48
I don't know if you can
  • 00:51:50
    um basically provide more information
  • 00:51:53
but uh I would say in addition to what
  • 00:51:55
    Tiffany mentioned VCC Vurby Career
  • 00:51:59
Connections basically USC has a central
  • 00:52:02
career services office well Verby has
  • 00:52:05
their own uh career services office
  • 00:52:08
called VCC and so they are there to help
  • 00:52:12
you and and just in case it wasn't clear
  • 00:52:15
Verby students have access to a lot of
  • 00:52:17
resources u not only centrally from USC
  • 00:52:21
but we also have a lot of our own
  • 00:52:23
resources and so uh please take
  • 00:52:25
advantage of them while you're here
  • 00:52:31
i know we have a few minutes
  • 00:52:33

  • 00:52:47
    contact
  • 00:52:48
information so just again Dr bruce

  • 00:52:54
main faculty for the analytics program
  • 00:52:56
uh Tiffany Castro main advisor for the
  • 00:53:00
    analytics program
  • 00:53:02
and though I'm the director let's just
  • 00:53:05

are more than happy to help um if you
  • 00:53:24

  • 00:53:28
anxiety doubts about what to expect
  • 00:53:31
please reach out to us our emails are
  • 00:53:33
there i I'm happy to meet with students
  • 00:53:37
on Zoom i know you know we're we're
  • 00:53:39
different time zones away but always
  • 00:53:41
happy to take a meeting um but there is
  • 00:53:45
that slide and again are there any last
  • 00:53:48
    second questions
  • 00:53:51
i do have one for student ambassadors
  • 00:53:52
just to um close us off and I guess that
  • 00:53:55
would be if you were to have if you had
  • 00:53:59
the opportunity to start the program you
  • 00:54:02
know fresh once again with the knowledge
  • 00:54:04
you already have what would you maybe do
  • 00:54:07
differently and or what advice would you
  • 00:54:11
give to yourself um for coming into the
  • 00:54:14
    program
  • 00:54:16
    that's that's a good question
  • 00:54:20
um I'll say I I am right now pretty
  • 00:54:24
satisfied with what I have done for the
  • 00:54:28
last semester cuz uh not going to brag
  • 00:54:32
but I I got all A's so in terms of the
  • 00:54:35
    the grades I can't I can't do better but
  • 00:54:38
    with the mindset I'll just say I I I
  • 00:54:42
need to put more time in finding job not
  • 00:54:44
just uh focusing on the courses itself
  • 00:54:47
because um yeah for me uh my career goal
  • 00:54:50
right now after the graduation is want
  • 00:54:52
to find a job uh so yeah I wish I could
  • 00:54:56
have uh spend more time in like because
  • 00:55:01
we only have two classes every week we
  • 00:55:03
have a lot of time to free time to spend
  • 00:55:05
by ourselves to decide uh maybe if you
  • 00:55:09
if you're looking for a PhD after
  • 00:55:11
graduation you need to do some uh
  • 00:55:12
research in a lab with some professors
  • 00:55:14
and if you want to find a job you just
  • 00:55:17
uh like dig deeper on the industries so
  • 00:55:22
I think that the mindset will be a
  • 00:55:24
little bit different so that's that's
  • 00:55:27
the thing I want I I wish I could change
  • 00:55:30
    yeah
  • 00:55:33
i would say that I may um focusing to
  • 00:55:38
find classes that's more program related
  • 00:55:41
also something that I need to learn
  • 00:55:43
maybe online that if I need to enrich
  • 00:55:46
myself more because currently uh I do
  • 00:55:50
have more knowledge and background in
  • 00:55:52
SQL and Tableau but not for the Python
  • 00:55:55
part so if I start over I maybe focus
  • 00:55:59
more centrally more detailed on the
  • 00:56:01
    Python programming that's something
  • 00:56:03
really crucial for finding jobs also
  • 00:56:05
like the things that Gini has said that
  • 00:56:07
I need to apply jobs much more earlier
  • 00:56:11
even I started last November but I think
  • 00:56:14
it can be more earlier than I've been
  • 00:56:17
expected and try to maybe make more
  • 00:56:20
friends and that's something I think is
  • 00:56:23
more important than just apply to jobs
  • 00:56:26
is to make new friends and communicate
  • 00:56:29
with people that already in the industry
  • 00:56:31
or to professor that say your any your
  • 00:56:36
concerns or any your questions to the
  • 00:56:38
people that already in this area and
  • 00:56:41
know a lot know things a lot so that's
  • 00:56:44
something that I think is really
  • 00:56:46
important and if I can go back I'm going
  • 00:56:49
to do this at the first
  • 00:56:54
time awesome thank you Gingi thank you
  • 00:56:57
    Gingi for
  • 00:56:59
