hello welcome or welcome back to my
  • 00:00:02
channel I'm Beth and today I'm going to
  • 00:00:03
be talking about self-care just a note
  • 00:00:06
from editing Beth I'm so sorry but my
  • 00:00:08
face is not in focus for the whole video
  • 00:00:10
    but I'm not re-recording
  • 00:00:12
it you're just going to have to see me a
  • 00:00:15
little bit blurry I'm sorry love you wi
  • 00:00:17
is a topic that is very dear to my heart
  • 00:00:19
because it's something that I practice
  • 00:00:21
every single day and without it I don't
  • 00:00:25
know how I'd cope to be honest um I'm
  • 00:00:27
    somebody who struggles with mental
  • 00:00:29
health is issues and skin condition and
  • 00:00:31
I generally get quite burnt out um just
  • 00:00:34
from daily life and being able to
  • 00:00:38
    implement self-care practices really
  • 00:00:41
really helps me to stay grounded and to
  • 00:00:43
stay More Level throughout my life um so
  • 00:00:46
yeah that's something I wanted to talk
  • 00:00:47
about today and a big thing I wanted to
  • 00:00:50
talk about before I get into some good
  • 00:00:52
    self-care techniques is what self-care
  • 00:00:54
    isn't
  • 00:00:55
because I find that self-care is so so
  • 00:00:59
    often
  • 00:01:00
    misunderstood and misrepresented on
  • 00:01:03
social media specifically um places like
  • 00:01:05
Tik Tok it is very very often shown to
  • 00:01:09
be something that's heavily reliant on
  • 00:01:11
    products especially hygiene products um
  • 00:01:15
there are many hauls on Tik Tok titled
  • 00:01:18
self-care hauls which I'm going to show
  • 00:01:21
a couple on the screen um as I'm talking
  • 00:01:24
about this and and this is no hate to
  • 00:01:27
these people who make these videos but
  • 00:01:28
    it is
  • 00:01:30
    damaging in my opinion
  • 00:01:32
    because this isn't genuine self-care
  • 00:01:35
that is going to help you it is just a
  • 00:01:37
way for companies to get you to spend
  • 00:01:39
more money on their products and and to
  • 00:01:41
feel like you're reliant on their
  • 00:01:42
products um yeah I see a lot of these
  • 00:01:45
videos about people going around like
  • 00:01:47
boots or Target or whatever kind of um
  • 00:01:50
drugstore or shop and they buy they
  • 00:01:53
spend an insane amount of money on body
  • 00:01:56
scrubs and moisturizers and bath bombs
  • 00:01:59
and face masks face masks is the really
  • 00:02:02
big one if you like for self-care um
  • 00:02:04
it's what a lot of people first think
  • 00:02:06
when they think of self-care it's oh a
  • 00:02:07
face mask and a bath um which don't get
  • 00:02:11
me wrong can be a part of self-care for
  • 00:02:14
some people depending on your needs but
  • 00:02:17
it is not the be all and end all and you
  • 00:02:18
do not need products to practice it so
  • 00:02:22
    that's what self-care isn't is products
  • 00:02:25
and skin care and so on inherently not
  • 00:02:28
    just those things
  • 00:02:30
um like I said it can be a part of a
  • 00:02:32
self-care routine for me um I have a
  • 00:02:35
skin condition I have eczema that is
  • 00:02:37
quite sore at the moment so for me um
  • 00:02:40
using skincare and Etc can actually be
  • 00:02:42
really helpful for me and puts me out a
  • 00:02:44
lot of pain and soreness um that I would
  • 00:02:48
otherwise be in but um there are so many
  • 00:02:52
other things that I Implement into my
  • 00:02:55
life that really really helped me from
  • 00:02:58
    um
  • 00:03:00
overwhelm and they do not rely
  • 00:03:05
    on spending
  • 00:03:07
money um so yeah just don't ever think
  • 00:03:11
that because you don't have any money to
  • 00:03:13
spend on a bunch of stuff that you can't
  • 00:03:15
look after yourself and take care of
  • 00:03:16
yourself just remember that self-care is
  • 00:03:19
so much more than buying things I feel
  • 00:03:22
like I repeated myself a lot there but
  • 00:03:24
it's just something that I want to get
  • 00:03:25
across probably because I think it's
  • 00:03:28
just so important that people understand
  • 00:03:29
    that
  • 00:03:30
self-care can be so many different
  • 00:03:32
    things depending on your individual
  • 00:03:34
needs as a person um depending on what
  • 00:03:40
relaxes you and what you struggle with
  • 00:03:43
personally I when I'm stressed the first
  • 00:03:45
thing that goes out the window is I stop
  • 00:03:47
feeding myself I don't nourish my body I
  • 00:03:49
don't look after myself properly and I
  • 00:03:51
will just eat whatever is very quick and
  • 00:03:54
easy to consume and then I feel way
  • 00:03:56
worse um so a really really big
  • 00:04:00
self-care thing for me is cooking for
  • 00:04:01
myself and nourishing my body and
  • 00:04:04
listening to my body's needs and
  • 00:04:06
    respecting that
  • 00:04:09
um it's not starving myself it's really
  • 00:04:13
taking the time to look after my body
  • 00:04:16
    properly um and that's something I don't
  • 00:04:19
I don't see in these in these self-care
  • 00:04:21
videos is like nourishing your body on
  • 00:04:23
the on the inside like properly
  • 00:04:24
nourishing it not just slapping a cream
  • 00:04:27
on and calling it the day calling it a
  • 00:04:29
    day
  • 00:04:31
    um for me
  • 00:04:34
also it you know this is probably not
  • 00:04:37
one of the things you think of when it
  • 00:04:38
comes to self-care but I get a lot of um
  • 00:04:43
stress background stress from say if I
  • 00:04:46
have an email to send or I have a bill
  • 00:04:48
    to pay or some sort
  • 00:04:50
of little chore that I need to get out
  • 00:04:52
of the way that I've been putting off
  • 00:04:54
sometimes the biggest self-care thing I
  • 00:04:56
can do for myself is getting that out
  • 00:05:00
the way even if it's 5 minutes of GH I
  • 00:05:02
don't want to do this the Elation I feel
  • 00:05:05
afterwards is just so nice and it allows
  • 00:05:07
me to be able to actually relax properly
  • 00:05:09
and shut my brain off without obsessing
  • 00:05:11
over it in the back of my mind but just
  • 00:05:13
putting it off because oh I want to
  • 00:05:16
relax sometimes relaxing is doing the
  • 00:05:18
thing you really need to do and then you
  • 00:05:21
can relax I used to as well just when I
  • 00:05:24
thought oh I need to have a selfcare
  • 00:05:26
night I'd run a bath for myself um which
  • 00:05:29
is great but then I'd sit in the bath
  • 00:05:31
and I would be on my phone the whole
  • 00:05:32
time scrolling which is not self-care
  • 00:05:36
you're not giving your brain a break and
  • 00:05:37
it is just you know it's going from the
  • 00:05:39
sofa and scrolling to going in the bath
  • 00:05:42
and scrolling and I've done that for so
  • 00:05:45
    long
  • 00:05:46
because it is kind of scary to be in
  • 00:05:48
your own thoughts sometimes as somebody
  • 00:05:50
who is kind of addicted to social media
  • 00:05:53
it's difficult but the most amazing
  • 00:05:57
thing I did the other day and it sounds
  • 00:05:58
so so simple it was just just having a
  • 00:06:00
bath by candle light and having no fun
  • 00:06:03
not even a book just nothing and I just
  • 00:06:04
sat there and I just relaxed and I
  • 00:06:06
enjoyed the bath and it sounds so stupid
  • 00:06:09
but something as simple as that is
  • 00:06:11
so just relieving um if you if you don't
  • 00:06:15
do that if you already do it great keep
  • 00:06:17
doing it but I know a lot of people do
  • 00:06:19
stay on their phone in the bath and on
  • 00:06:21
the topic of phones and technology a
  • 00:06:23
really big thing you can do for yourself
  • 00:06:25
is to set boundaries in regards to them
  • 00:06:28
um taking days where you don't go on
  • 00:06:31
your phone or you don't go on social
  • 00:06:32
media is very very beneficial and it's
  • 00:06:36
so easy to forget that it's not natural
  • 00:06:39
for us to be constantly glued to a
  • 00:06:42
device because it's so entrenched in our
  • 00:06:44
daily lives at this point but if you
  • 00:06:46
take even an hour or however long you
  • 00:06:49
can away from your phone it genuinely is
  • 00:06:52
just such a good feeling and your brain
  • 00:06:53
needs that break um sometimes I think
  • 00:06:57
from even doing anything because I read
  • 00:07:00
every night and that's great but
  • 00:07:01
sometimes even taking time from just not
  • 00:07:04
doing anything no reading no consuming
  • 00:07:06
    literally just sitting with your
  • 00:07:08
thoughts um that is a form of
  • 00:07:10
meditation even just cuz you don't have
  • 00:07:12
your eyes closed and you're humming
  • 00:07:13
    doesn't mean you're not meditating I
  • 00:07:15
think just allowing your thoughts to
  • 00:07:16
come and go and not judging them just
  • 00:07:19
allowing them to be there and not trying
  • 00:07:21
to sh them away by watching Tik toks um
  • 00:07:26
yeah that's very very beneficial for you
  • 00:07:28
ooh another big one is movement and uh
  • 00:07:32
whatever kind of movement you enjoy
  • 00:07:34
doing that can be going to the gym or
  • 00:07:37
which I doubt is a lot of people because
  • 00:07:39
going to the gym sometimes is so rigid
  • 00:07:41
and just not the most fun unless it's
  • 00:07:44
something that you do as a hobby um but
  • 00:07:46
it can be stretching or it can be yoga
  • 00:07:49
or it can be pole dancing or going to a
  • 00:07:52
dance class or swimming or whatever you
  • 00:07:54
enjoy doing but when you're feeling down
  • 00:07:57
Sometimes the best thing you can do for
  • 00:07:58
yourself is to get some movement in and
  • 00:08:01
to exercise because it does Rel release
  • 00:08:03
endorphins and it's sometimes the last
  • 00:08:06
thing you want to do is really what you
  • 00:08:08
    need to be doing for
  • 00:08:09
yourself um and I think that's the point
  • 00:08:13
I'm trying to create here is that self
  • 00:08:15
care isn't always just this pretty
  • 00:08:19
little cream in a pink pink pot it's you
  • 00:08:22
know sometimes it's doing what you kind
  • 00:08:24
of don't want to do and then you will
  • 00:08:26
feel so much better during and after um
  • 00:08:29
it's looking out for yourself in a way
  • 00:08:32
that is goes more than just past the
  • 00:08:35
surface it's genuinely looking at what
  • 00:08:37
you need as a person and what is lacking
  • 00:08:39
in your life and following through with
  • 00:08:43
that so for me like just a very low
  • 00:08:46
stakes easy sort of movement is just
  • 00:08:49
stretching um I just put some slow music
  • 00:08:53
on and I just stretch however my body
  • 00:08:56
wants me to you can watch a YouTube
  • 00:08:58
video whatever you want to do but the
  • 00:09:00
relief my body feels when I do that it's
  • 00:09:02
like God I forgot how good this feels to
  • 00:09:04
just stretch my body um it's definitely
  • 00:09:07
something I need to do more and I mean
  • 00:09:10
so are most of these things to be honest
  • 00:09:12
just listening to your body things like
  • 00:09:13
having a good sleep schedule having good
  • 00:09:15
sleep hygiene um getting enough rest
  • 00:09:20
exercising when you need to um just
  • 00:09:23
whatever your body is really asking you
  • 00:09:26
listen to it um even sometimes like I'll
  • 00:09:31
be sitting there on my phone the phone
  • 00:09:32
is always the issue here um and I'll
  • 00:09:35
really need to go and pee and I put it
  • 00:09:36
off rages cuz I don't listen to my body
  • 00:09:39
and I think it's something a lot of
  • 00:09:43
people struggle with now um people from
  • 00:09:46
like younger people from our generation
  • 00:09:48
we struggle to listen to our own bodies
  • 00:09:50
    because
  • 00:09:51
it's we just want to be distracted
  • 00:09:53
constantly but sometimes just tuning in
  • 00:09:56
is just really really what you need and
  • 00:09:58
going back to the issue of the
  • 00:10:02
    misconception of self-care with products
  • 00:10:04
    and
  • 00:10:05
    everything sometimes again depending on
  • 00:10:08
    the
  • 00:10:11
individual the best thing you can do is
  • 00:10:14
not spend money you know if you if
  • 00:10:16
you're struggling financially like me um
  • 00:10:20
if you don't have a big income or any
  • 00:10:22
income like me um being aware of your
  • 00:10:26
finances and being honest with yourself
  • 00:10:28
about what you can and cannot afford
  • 00:10:30
goes a long way because sure it might
  • 00:10:34
feel great the dopamine hit you get when
  • 00:10:37
you first buy something um but most of
  • 00:10:41
the time at least for myself I feel
  • 00:10:44
really crap like 20 minutes after or
  • 00:10:47
after I've opened it because I'm like
  • 00:10:50
great I'm even further into debt now and
  • 00:10:52
I have this other thing lying around
  • 00:10:54
that actually doesn't really make a
  • 00:10:55
difference to my life at all um so yeah
  • 00:10:58
having B iies with yourself in terms of
  • 00:11:01
finances and all the other things I've
  • 00:11:04
already spoken about um it's very
  • 00:11:06
    important and talking about boundaries
  • 00:11:08
as well I think having boundaries with
  • 00:11:10
the people in your life um is also very
  • 00:11:13
important to take care of yourself
  • 00:11:15
because there's some people that maybe
  • 00:11:16
we do need to keep at arms length um or
  • 00:11:19
there's just certain things we need to
  • 00:11:21
    request in our relationships and
  • 00:11:23
    friendships and that's okay advocating
  • 00:11:25
for yourself and being there for
  • 00:11:26
yourself um is very important but yeah I
  • 00:11:30
think it really comes down to yourself
  • 00:11:33
as an individual some people have very
  • 00:11:36
very busy day-to-day lives um and what
  • 00:11:39
they really need to do for themselves is
  • 00:11:40
to allow themselves to rest I've known
  • 00:11:43
people throughout my life that are the
  • 00:11:45
opposite to me and they will just
  • 00:11:47
constantly be doing things and they
  • 00:11:49
won't say no to anything and they'll
  • 00:11:51
make plans constantly and they never
  • 00:11:54
ever allow themselves rest and I do see
  • 00:11:56
that coming back to bite them um and
  • 00:11:59
then there's other people like myself
  • 00:12:00
who I probably don't do enough um
  • 00:12:03
because I have struggled with depression
  • 00:12:04
and a lot of anxiety but now that I'm
  • 00:12:07
trying to work on that and improve that
  • 00:12:09
I do recognize that I need to do more
  • 00:12:11
for myself I need to socialize more with
  • 00:12:13
people I need to exercise a little bit
  • 00:12:16
more and I am trying to slowly um
  • 00:12:19
improve those things something i' maybe
  • 00:12:21
recommend doing is getting a notepad or
  • 00:12:24
writing it in your notes and your phone
  • 00:12:25
or whatever you can write it down on um
  • 00:12:29
maybe write down a list of things that
  • 00:12:31
have been bothering you recently or
  • 00:12:32
creating stress in your life or
  • 00:12:35
discomfort and then looking at how you
  • 00:12:37
might be able to alleviate these things
  • 00:12:40
um if it is that you're just super super
  • 00:12:41
busy taking time to slow down would be
  • 00:12:44
great or if it's somebody in your life
  • 00:12:47
that you need to communicate with
  • 00:12:49
    sometimes having that uncomfortable
  • 00:12:51
communication is the best thing you can
  • 00:12:52
do for yourself um to alleviate the
  • 00:12:56
anxiety around that yeah just remember
  • 00:12:59
it comes from within self-care does and
  • 00:13:01
very rarely comes from items and
  • 00:13:04
commodities I decided to make this video
  • 00:13:06
today because I'm Ill um I've got a cold
  • 00:13:10
from my boyfriend who's just got better
  • 00:13:12
and now he's given it to me um I'm my
  • 00:13:16
period starting in a day my Eczema is
  • 00:13:19
bad at the moment and I'm just generally
  • 00:13:21
really burnt out so I'm going to have a
  • 00:13:24
nice self-care evening I'm going to have
  • 00:13:26
a bath um I'm not going to take my phone
  • 00:13:29
in I'm going to read my book about
  • 00:13:32
anxiety it's all about anxiety and how
  • 00:13:34
it exists in the body and the anatomy of
  • 00:13:37
it um I'm going to make a lovely meal
  • 00:13:39
for myself and then I'm going to make
  • 00:13:40
    some
  • 00:13:41
pancakes and I'm going to do a jigsaw
  • 00:13:44
just something slow to wind down whilst
  • 00:13:47
I listen to an audio book before bed and
  • 00:13:49
I'm going to spend some nice time with
  • 00:13:50
my partner when he gets home from work
  • 00:13:52
so I'm just going to slow down um and
  • 00:13:55
probably before all those things I am
  • 00:13:57
going to give my a little clean because
  • 00:14:00
    that's something that's been stressing
  • 00:14:01
me out and it's something that I need to
  • 00:14:03
do I really hope this video has helped
  • 00:14:05
you even if it's a little bit if you
  • 00:14:06
have made this far in the video I
  • 00:14:08
applaud you I'm so proud of you thank
  • 00:14:10
you um and if you have then leave me a
  • 00:14:13
comment so I know um saying telling me
  • 00:14:16
one thing that you implement in your
  • 00:14:19
life for self-care um CU I'm interested
  • 00:14:22
    in how different
  • 00:14:24
    people combat their stress um
  • 00:14:29
and who knows we might all be able to
  • 00:14:30
help each other with some new techniques
  • 00:14:32
and especially help me because I'm
  • 00:14:34
stressed at the moment please help me um
  • 00:14:37
but yeah I hope you have a lovely
  • 00:14:38
evening or morning or night or whatever
  • 00:14:40
time of day it is and I love you and
  • 00:14:42
    yeah bye-bye
