00:00:00
it takes thousands of hours to master
00:00:02
all four competitive Strokes butterfly
00:00:04
backstroke breaststroke and freestyle
00:00:07
when swum all together they're known as
00:00:09
the individual medley and they're a test
00:00:10
of your speed endurance strength and
00:00:13
skill and to be a true swimming Master
00:00:15
you need to know how to swim every
00:00:17
stroke in this video I'm going to show
00:00:20
you how to swim every stroke with
00:00:21
perfect technique by the end of the
00:00:23
video you'll be able to go and crush or
00:00:25
at least attempt every stroke like a pro
00:00:28
let me know what your favorite stroke is
00:00:29
down in the comments and let's get into
00:00:31
it first you've got to understand why
00:00:34
you should know all The Strokes in the
00:00:35
first place when you swim all four
00:00:37
strokes you challenge your muscles in
00:00:39
different ways and yes you'll work every
00:00:41
single muscle in your body I don't think
00:00:43
there's any other workout that's truly
00:00:45
full body like swimming is swimmers who
00:00:48
train every stroke end up building
00:00:50
strong resilient bodies that are less
00:00:52
prone to injury plus they just end up
00:00:54
way more fit in general that swimmer
00:00:56
body is no joke if you want one keep
00:00:58
watching swimming different Strokes also
00:01:01
helps keep things interesting if you
00:01:02
want to swim endless laps of freestyle
00:01:04
without stopping be my guest but that's
00:01:07
pretty boring and before you say well I
00:01:09
only race freestyle so I don't need to
00:01:11
know the other Strokes I hate to break
00:01:13
it to you but if you're ignoring the
00:01:14
other Strokes you're doing yourself a
00:01:16
huge disservice just trust me on this
00:01:19
and think about adding other Strokes to
00:01:21
your workouts okay all right now that
00:01:23
we've gotten through why you should stop
00:01:24
swimming freestyle all the time I'm
00:01:26
going to explain how to swim every
00:01:28
stroke with absolutely perfect technique
00:01:30
let's get the toughest stroke over with
00:01:32
First butterfly I think I'm speaking for
00:01:35
the majority of swimmers when I say that
00:01:37
fly is not the most popular stroke at
00:01:39
practice it's challenging it's tiring
00:01:41
and it's a great way to add some spice
00:01:43
to your workouts so what makes good
00:01:45
butterfly it comes down to proper timing
00:01:47
and a powerful stroke let's start with
00:01:49
your body position and this applies to
00:01:51
most Strokes you want your hips to be
00:01:53
high in the water and your head to be in
00:01:55
a neutral position this creates the best
00:01:57
Baseline for your stroke to start with
00:01:59
now let's look get the butterfly pull
00:02:01
you want your hands to move at the same
00:02:03
time they should enter the water
00:02:04
relatively flat with minimal Splash
00:02:06
right in line with your shoulders then
00:02:08
you'll start pulling keeping your elbows
00:02:10
nice and High the whole time this is
00:02:12
called early vertical forearm and it
00:02:14
essentially turns your hand wrist and
00:02:16
forearm into one giant paddle that can
00:02:18
pull a ton of water try to pull straight
00:02:21
back instead of using the old school s
00:02:23
pull it's not as efficient after
00:02:25
finishing the underwater part of your
00:02:27
palm it's time for the Out of Water
00:02:28
recovery sweep your arms out wide and
00:02:30
return to your starting point keep your
00:02:32
hands and arms relatively relaxed and
00:02:34
close to the surface of the water next
00:02:36
up is the kick I see so many swimmers
00:02:38
struggle to get their kick timing right
00:02:40
in butterfly so listen up when you kick
00:02:42
and Butterfly keep your legs together
00:02:44
and toes pointed to get the most out of
00:02:46
your kick and create the best rhythm in
00:02:48
your stroke I recommend thinking about
00:02:50
butterfly as having two key kicks the
00:02:53
first kick helps Propel your arms out of
00:02:55
the water during your recovery and the
00:02:57
second kick keeps you moving as your
00:02:59
hands dive forward word to start your
00:03:00
poll focus on kicking both up and down
00:03:03
here a lot of swimmers Focus only on the
00:03:05
down kick so engage those hamstrings and
00:03:08
kick up too now let's put it all
00:03:10
together and add in breathing to take a
00:03:12
breath lift your head up right after
00:03:14
your catch as your arms come forward
00:03:15
drop your head back down try not to lift
00:03:18
your head too high when you breathe your
00:03:20
chin should be just grazing the surface
00:03:22
of the water lift just enough to grab a
00:03:24
quick breath then get your head back
00:03:26
into that neutral position I recommend
00:03:28
picking a breathing pattern and sticking
00:03:29
with it to make sure your body gets a
00:03:32
steady flow of air and doesn't fatigue
00:03:34
extra quickly try breathing every two or
00:03:36
three strokes and see what works for you
00:03:38
alright first stroke done before we move
00:03:41
on you should know butterfly requires a
00:03:43
baseline of strength that most beginners
00:03:45
don't have so if you're struggling with
00:03:47
fly just keep at it over time you'll
00:03:50
build strength and it'll get a little
00:03:51
easier for more butterfly tips check out
00:03:53
our video on five common butterfly
00:03:55
mistakes and how to fix them next up is
00:03:58
backstroke it's the only stroke that
00:03:59
require you to be entirely on your back
00:04:01
which raises the question how the heck
00:04:03
are you supposed to swim straight I
00:04:05
promise we'll get to that but first
00:04:06
let's build a perfect stroke to start
00:04:08
make sure your body position is correct
00:04:10
avoid looking at your toes keep that
00:04:12
neck neutral and look at the sky your
00:04:14
hips should float up close to the
00:04:16
surface of the water think about keeping
00:04:17
your belly button dry the backstroke
00:04:19
pull is a little different your arm will
00:04:21
exit the water thumb first as you lift
00:04:24
your arm rotate your body away from that
00:04:26
lifted arm then make sure your hand
00:04:29
re-enters the water pinky first and
00:04:31
rotate toward that arm to reduce the
00:04:33
drag your shoulders create pinky first
00:04:35
is key this hand position sets you up
00:04:38
for a strong early vertical forearm
00:04:40
catch backstroke kick is a flutter kick
00:04:42
just like Freestyle don't kick too big
00:04:44
here The Wider your kick the more drag
00:04:46
you create try to keep your kick no more
00:04:48
than about 18 inches wide think small
00:04:51
and fast instead of big and slow your
00:04:53
kick should be driven from your hips
00:04:54
rather than from your knees keep your
00:04:56
toes pointed and your legs relatively
00:04:58
straight with just a light Bend at the
00:05:00
knee if your knees are popping out of
00:05:02
the water like crazy you need to work on
00:05:04
that knee Bend now some notes on
00:05:06
rotation if you have a really strong
00:05:07
kick you'll probably be able to drive
00:05:09
your back stroke rotation with your hips
00:05:11
if not don't worry try driving your
00:05:13
rotation with your shoulders instead but
00:05:15
know this whichever rotation philosophy
00:05:17
works for you make sure you don't over
00:05:19
rotate it's not about totally rotating
00:05:21
from one side to the other it's about
00:05:23
reducing drag okay one last thing if you
00:05:26
struggle to swim straight in backstroke
00:05:28
I recommend working on a few things
00:05:30
first find something overhead to focus
00:05:32
on like a seam in the ceiling if you
00:05:34
swim outside good luck try to find a
00:05:36
cloud or something to keep you on track
00:05:38
next up make sure you're pulling with
00:05:40
equal strength in both arms and even
00:05:42
pull will keep you going straight and
00:05:44
lastly try to keep your head from moving
00:05:46
too much maintaining a neutral head
00:05:48
position will help keep the rest of your
00:05:50
body in line too all right two down two
00:05:53
to go next up is breaststroke the short
00:05:56
axis stroke is all about timing and
00:05:58
power as with all other Strokes we'll
00:06:00
begin with a nice streamlined body
00:06:02
position in breaststroke every stroke
00:06:04
starts and ends with a little time in
00:06:07
streamline the more quickly you can get
00:06:09
back into streamline the more efficient
00:06:10
your stroke will be so high hips head
00:06:13
looking down you know the drill by now
00:06:15
we can break breaststroke down into four
00:06:18
steps pull breathe kick and glide you
00:06:21
want to build each stroke in that order
00:06:23
and now let's get into the pull from
00:06:25
streamline position you'll sweep your
00:06:27
hands apart with the pinkies up when
00:06:29
your arms are just wider than shoulder
00:06:30
width start to pull back with that high
00:06:32
elbow early vertical forearm catch at
00:06:34
this point you'll lift your head to
00:06:36
breathe when you drop your head back
00:06:37
down your arm should explode forward
00:06:39
this is the slowest part of the stroke
00:06:41
so make sure to maximize your power here
00:06:43
avoid diving down that's not as
00:06:45
efficient let's get into the kick now
00:06:47
breaststroke has a unique frog-like kick
00:06:50
that can take some time to master at its
00:06:52
core though breaststroke kit can be
00:06:54
broken down into four steps up out
00:06:56
around and together first pull your
00:06:59
heels to your butt with with your feet
00:07:00
flexed then start to kick out try to
00:07:03
keep your knees no wider than your
00:07:05
shoulders here next you'll start to
00:07:07
sweep your legs around keeping those
00:07:09
feet flexed and finally you'll squeeze
00:07:11
your legs back together ending up back
00:07:13
in that streamline position ideally
00:07:15
you'll kick as you drive your hands
00:07:17
forward to boost your momentum before
00:07:19
you Glide it takes some time to perfect
00:07:21
your breaststroke timing so keep working
00:07:23
at it one last thing on breaststroke
00:07:25
before we move on the pull out you'll do
00:07:27
a pull out after every start and turn
00:07:29
before you begin your actual stroke to
00:07:32
do a pull out push off the wall and
00:07:33
streamline hold it for a few seconds
00:07:35
until you feel yourself start to slow
00:07:37
down then do one dolphin kick just one
00:07:40
follow that with one big pull down with
00:07:43
both arms at the same time to get
00:07:44
yourself up to the surface do one
00:07:46
breaststroke kick and bring your arms
00:07:48
back up into streamline position and
00:07:50
you're ready to crush the competition
00:07:52
okay now let's dive into freestyle or
00:07:55
front crawl some of us learn freestyle
00:07:57
first when we start swimming and for
00:07:58
good reason of all the competitive
00:08:00
Strokes it's probably the easiest but
00:08:02
that doesn't mean it's easy if you've
00:08:04
watched this far you know what's coming
00:08:06
next good freestyle is going to start
00:08:08
with proper body position we want our
00:08:10
hips to be high in the water and our
00:08:12
head neutral when the head is too high
00:08:14
the hips are more likely to drop and
00:08:16
drag you down and we don't want that it
00:08:18
might be helpful to think about pressing
00:08:19
your chest down in the water to keep
00:08:21
those hips higher too when it comes to
00:08:22
your freestyle pull it's all about
00:08:24
finding balance between relaxed and
00:08:27
Powerful your fingertips should enter
00:08:28
the water about 18 inches in front of
00:08:31
your shoulder at a 45 degree angle
00:08:32
middle finger first try not to Cross
00:08:35
Your Arms along the center of your body
00:08:36
here it's inefficient and might cause
00:08:38
you to zigzag around your lane a little
00:08:40
bit follow up your hand entry with a
00:08:42
long reaching extension through your
00:08:43
shoulder and arm once your shoulder is
00:08:45
fully extended your chest will open up
00:08:47
to the side keep looking down after your
00:08:49
arm is fully extended Bend at the elbow
00:08:51
and point your fingertips down toward
00:08:53
the bottom of the pool and start to pull
00:08:55
straight back this is our early vertical
00:08:57
forearm pull it's much easier on your
00:08:59
shoulder person pulling with a straight
00:09:01
arm try to keep your elbows above your
00:09:02
hand for most of the pull eventually
00:09:04
you'll extend your arms straight when
00:09:06
your hand reaches your hips to start the
00:09:08
recovery phase keep that elbow High
00:09:10
during recovery too one last thing on
00:09:12
the pull don't squeeze your fingers
00:09:13
together instead keep them semi-relaxed
00:09:16
with a few millimeters of space between
00:09:18
them this can actually increase the
00:09:19
power of your pull like backstroke
00:09:21
freestyle requires some rotation instead
00:09:24
of leading your Rotation by twisting
00:09:25
your shoulders focus on engaging your
00:09:27
core and initiating your rotation from
00:09:29
the hips and your shoulders will follow
00:09:31
are you taking notes I hope so now let's
00:09:34
talk about breathing in freestyle you
00:09:36
need to keep a neutral head position
00:09:37
when you breathe I see so many swimmers
00:09:39
lifting their heads forward or twisting
00:09:41
aggressively to either side and that's
00:09:43
just slowing them down as you take a
00:09:45
stroke you'll notice your body rotating
00:09:46
to one side if you want to breathe Now's
00:09:49
the Time to turn your head to the
00:09:50
opposite side to grab some air try to
00:09:53
keep one eye in the water and one eye
00:09:55
out of the water to maintain good
00:09:56
alignment don't twist your head any
00:09:58
further than that take a quick breath
00:10:00
and get your head back into neutral for
00:10:02
your next stroke exhale while your face
00:10:04
is in the water and turn to take another
00:10:05
breath when you're ready stick to a
00:10:07
breathing pattern and freestyle so you
00:10:09
don't deprive yourself of that precious
00:10:10
precious air breathing every two or
00:10:13
three Strokes works for most people
00:10:14
usually you can breathe on both sides or
00:10:17
just one side it's really up to you last
00:10:19
but not least we've got your freestyle
00:10:21
kick my one piece of advice is to keep
00:10:24
your kick simple you don't need to kick
00:10:26
like crazy or try to have the biggest
00:10:27
kick in the pool focus on a hip driven
00:10:30
kick that's small and fast try not to
00:10:33
kick wider than about 18 inches and keep
00:10:35
those knees from bending too much think
00:10:37
of your kick as a tool to help you
00:10:39
maintain proper body position and drive
00:10:41
your rotation now for some advice
00:10:43
chances are there's going to be one
00:10:45
stroke that you struggle with and I know
00:10:47
it's not fun working on things you
00:10:49
aren't good at but trust me getting out
00:10:51
of your comfort zone is actually a good
00:10:53
thing and will make you a better swimmer
00:10:55
I didn't talk about turns at all in this
00:10:57
video but don't worry check out our
