00:00:01
Hey, hey everyone. Felix from Nintendo
00:00:04
Life here, and yes, today we're here to
00:00:06
look at everything we know about Mario
00:00:08
Kart World. We'll look at how many
00:00:10
characters and which characters are in
00:00:12
the game, what courses are making a
00:00:14
grand return, and what items will you be
00:00:17
using to get ahead of your friends.
00:00:19
Well, strap in, get ready, and let's
00:00:21
race right into
00:00:24
it. Let's start with some big new
00:00:26
changes. one. They've upped the player
00:00:29
count to 24 players and we're all racing
00:00:32
around on these tracks in a big big open
00:00:34
world. Depending on what mode you're
00:00:36
choosing, you'll have different routes
00:00:38
from one map to another. And quickly
00:00:40
before we talk about the mode, the
00:00:42
characters, and then the stages, I want
00:00:44
to go over some differences that there
00:00:45
is to the gameplay in Mario Kart World.
00:00:48
For one, you can now grind on rails and
00:00:50
drive on the walls. This is a new way to
00:00:53
get speed boosts. And if that isn't
00:00:55
enough for you, you can also do multiple
00:00:57
tricks in the air. But if that is not
00:00:59
enough for you either, you can also do
00:01:01
tricks straight from the ground. Yes,
00:01:03
you can charge them up as you're just
00:01:05
driving. So this might be the new meta,
00:01:07
for example, like doing a wheelie in
00:01:09
Mario Kart Wii or snaking in Mario Kart
00:01:11
DS. And although we haven't seen a mode
00:01:13
like in Mario Kart DS akin to mission
00:01:15
mode, essentially a singleplayer
00:01:17
experience, maybe we'll see more about
00:01:19
that in the Mario Kart Direct April
00:01:21
17th, we have seen five different modes.
00:01:23
available in this game. Three of them I
00:01:26
can go into detail with because they
00:01:27
actually showed them off in the trailers
00:01:29
and the treehouse footage and two are
00:01:31
kind of just hidden away blink and you
00:01:32
miss it. So the first one is just Grand
00:01:35
Prix, but it has a twist this time. Yes,
00:01:37
you will still race on four different
00:01:39
tracks, but now you will race from track
00:01:42
to track. And the way it works is that
00:01:43
the first race you'll just race around
00:01:45
on it normally three laps and then
00:01:47
afterwards you'll race to the next track
00:01:49
and then do one lap around on it. Now,
00:01:52
it's pretty much confirmed that you'll
00:01:54
be able to turn this feature off. As you
00:01:56
can see on this menu here, it says
00:01:58
intermissions. So, my understanding is
00:02:01
that you can pick and choose how you
00:02:02
will do it. Also, there's some footage
00:02:04
online which shows them starting at one
00:02:06
stage and you can just select to race on
00:02:08
that one if you want to do three laps or
00:02:10
you can select a different stage and
00:02:11
then drive from one stage to the next
00:02:13
one. The next mode is knockout tour. And
00:02:15
the cool thing about this one is that
00:02:17
the amount of players in the race will
00:02:19
decrease the further you get into the
00:02:20
race. You'll race across six different
00:02:22
stages. And at each checkpoint, meaning
00:02:25
the new stage, the last four people will
00:02:28
be out of the race. So you'll start with
00:02:30
24 people, then 20, 16, 12, 8, and then
00:02:34
at the end four people. The third mode,
00:02:37
which they showcased, although not in as
00:02:39
great detail, is the free roaming mode.
00:02:42
Drive around in the big open world. You
00:02:45
can practice on the stages. You can see
00:02:47
other racers racing around. You can get
00:02:48
your friends together and just go for a
00:02:50
ride. And they say there's going to be
00:02:52
lots of different secrets and
00:02:53
collectibles. But I'm so excited to see
00:02:56
what this mode includes. They didn't
00:02:59
really go much off the tracks in the
00:03:01
showcase of this world, but I imagine
00:03:03
there's going to be so much that they
00:03:04
haven't told us yet. There's also two
00:03:07
other modes which they haven't really
00:03:08
showcased. It's uh coin battle and
00:03:11
balloon battle, and those seem pretty
00:03:13
straightforward. Now, we haven't seen
00:03:14
any battle stages, but this world is
00:03:16
huge. So, it wouldn't surprise me if
00:03:18
there are some secret battle stages
00:03:20
hidden throughout. And now, having
00:03:21
looked at the modes, I want to have a
00:03:23
look at all the different characters
00:03:24
that there are in the game. And the
00:03:27
number was actually so much higher than
00:03:29
I could ever have anticipated. Are you
00:03:32
ready? There is 50 characters, and this
00:03:35
is so far. There might be even more
00:03:37
characters, but 50 characters that I've
00:03:39
been able to spot in Seon's footage when
00:03:41
he played the game and also the Nintendo
00:03:43
Treehouse footage. So, I'll just go
00:03:45
through them one by one. They might not
00:03:46
be categorized properly. I just went
00:03:49
through and whenever I spotted a
00:03:50
character, I just added it to this
00:03:52
massive list. So, let's go through them
00:03:55
one by one. We have Mario, Luigi, Peach,
00:04:00
Bowser, Donkey Kong,
00:04:03
Roselina, Wario,
00:04:06
Waluigi, Toad, Yoshi, Baby Mario, Baby
00:04:11
Luigi, Baby Peach, Baby Daisy, Baby
00:04:16
Roselina. We have Daisy, Koopa Trooper,
00:04:20
Pauline, Bowser Jr.,
00:04:23
Berto, Toadette, King Buu, Shy Guy, Cow,
00:04:30
Fishbone, Penguin, Dolphin, Piana. Some
00:04:34
of these pigs are wild and we only just
00:04:37
over halfway done. So, let's keep going.
00:04:40
We also have Snowman,
00:04:43
Catacqued, Pokey,
00:04:45
Stingby, Sidestepper, Piranhop, Conor,
00:04:51
Wiggler, Charging Chuck, Dry Bones,
00:04:55
Parabittybud, Spike, Cheap Cheap, Rocky
00:04:58
Wrench, Hammer Bro, Swoop, Goomba,
00:05:03
Lucky, Coin Coffer, Monty Mole, and
00:05:07
Peeper. But if that wasn't enough, each
00:05:10
character also has costumes. It looks
00:05:13
like based on this footage from the
00:05:14
treehouse that each character will have
00:05:16
10 different costumes, which if each
00:05:19
character has 10 different costumes,
00:05:21
we're looking at, drum roll please,
00:05:24
well, it's actually just simple math,
00:05:25
but 500 different looking characters.
00:05:29
That is
00:05:30
insane. Although wouldn't surprise me if
00:05:33
Mario has more costumes than, for
00:05:34
example, Sidestepper. But how do you get
00:05:37
these costumes? Well, you do so by
00:05:39
actually just driving as the character
00:05:40
that you want the set costumes as and
00:05:42
then grabbing this food power up. When
00:05:45
you do so, well, you unlock a new skin.
00:05:47
I'm excited to learn more and see, is it
00:05:49
really just 10 times you have to drive
00:05:51
into them? Can you get duplicates? I
00:05:53
just want to know more. But speaking
00:05:55
about items, why don't we take a look at
00:05:56
all the items you can just get in a
00:05:58
regular item box. First off, I just want
00:06:00
to say that you have two item slots
00:06:02
again, just like in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
00:06:04
And the 25 plus items go as follows. We
00:06:08
have the mushroom, triple mushroom,
00:06:11
golden mushroom, mega mushroom. I'm so
00:06:14
happy to see that mega return, green
00:06:16
shell, triple green shell, red shell,
00:06:19
triple red shell, blue shell, and a new
00:06:22
item called a golden shell. What this
00:06:25
item does is when you fire it, a lot of
00:06:27
coins will spawn behind it. We have the
00:06:29
banana, triple banana, ba bomb,
00:06:32
boomerang, firefl, ice flower, question
00:06:36
mark block, which seems to just get you
00:06:38
a lot of coins, super horn, feather is
00:06:41
actually not just a battle item,
00:06:44
lightning, star, boo, looper, hammer,
00:06:48
bro, hammer, bullet bill, coin, which
00:06:51
acts a little bit different than it used
00:06:53
to. For one, you actually get a tiny
00:06:55
little speed boost, so it's not just
00:06:57
completely useless. And you also get two
00:06:59
of them because they've upped the coin
00:07:01
max to 20 instead of 10. And finally, I
00:07:04
want to talk about probably the coolest
00:07:05
item of them all, and it's this kind of
00:07:07
camic orb. See, when you use it, the
00:07:10
other races will turn into an enemy.
00:07:12
Let's say the Goomba. And then giant
00:07:14
glmbbas will appear on the road as
00:07:16
obstacles that you have to dodge. Oh,
00:07:18
and a new thing that they've added
00:07:20
regarding items is that just a default,
00:07:22
your items will just trail behind you
00:07:24
without having to hold down the button.
00:07:26
Now, quickly before looking at all the
00:07:28
stages, I want to go over a big new
00:07:30
change that there is to the cart. You
00:07:32
may have noticed from looking at all
00:07:33
these clips that gliders are nowhere to
00:07:35
be seen, and that's because cart
00:07:37
customization is nowhere to be seen,
00:07:39
which I am incredibly happy to see.
00:07:41
Going back to what I know from Mario
00:07:43
Kart DS and Mario Kart Wii. So, instead
00:07:45
of a glider, you now have just wings on
00:07:48
your car. And instead of driving
00:07:50
underwater, your driving vehicle turns
00:07:51
into a boat. It is fantastic. And now
00:07:54
with that done, let's have a look at the
00:07:57
stages. As said earlier, all the stages
00:07:59
are set in this massive Mario Kart
00:08:02
world, and you can drive between them as
00:08:04
you wish. There's seven cups shown off,
00:08:07
but we actually only got to see what
00:08:09
stages were in the first four cups, so
00:08:12
I'll start with those. In the Mushroom
00:08:13
Cup, we have Mario Bros. Circuit, Crown
00:08:17
City, Whistle Stub Summit, and DK
00:08:20
Spaceport. These are all new tracks, by
00:08:23
the way, because later on we also have
00:08:24
some retro tracks, for example, in the
00:08:26
Flower Cup, which are all retro tracks.
00:08:28
We're starting off with Desert Hills
00:08:29
from Mario Kart DS, which oh, I'm so
00:08:32
happy to see that. Shy Guy Basar from
00:08:34
the 3DS, Wario Stadium from the N64, and
00:08:38
Airship Fortress from Mario Kart DS.
00:08:41
Yes, they are all freaking bangers.
00:08:43
You've done a great job, Nintendo. The
00:08:46
Star Cup has another Mario Kart DS
00:08:48
track. I love that there's so many Mario
00:08:50
Kart DS tracks. That's that's my that's
00:08:52
my childhood Mario Kart game, DK Pass.
00:08:55
We also have a new track, Star View
00:08:57
Peak. And then the other two are also
00:08:59
returning courses. We have Sky High
00:09:01
Sunday, which you may remember from
00:09:03
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. And then it
00:09:05
finishes off with Wario Shipyard from
00:09:07
the 3DS. And the final cup that we got
00:09:09
to see in full is the Shell Cup. It
00:09:11
starts off with Koopa Trooper Beach,
00:09:13
most likely from the N64, but I've
00:09:15
actually not seen any footage from this
00:09:17
track, so it could also just be a Mario
00:09:19
Circuit situation where this game's
00:09:21
Mario Circuit. Has nothing to do with
00:09:23
previous Mario circuits. The rest of the
00:09:25
three tracks are all original though.
00:09:27
It's Fairway Oasis, Crown City, which is
00:09:30
also in the Mushroom Cup, but here it
00:09:32
appears as Night, and Peach Stadium. But
00:09:36
there are of course more tracks in this
00:09:38
game. commend to keep track of it all.
00:09:39
Well, I have this beautiful map which I
00:09:41
found on the Japanese website. And
00:09:43
what's really cool is that I can toggle
00:09:45
all the icons. These are all the tracks
00:09:47
available in the game. And yeah, let's
00:09:48
just name all the tracks that we already
00:09:50
know of. There we go. Quite a lot left,
00:09:53
right? So, let's see what we're working
00:09:55
with. But before we do that, how many
00:09:57
tracks are there in total? Well, let's
00:09:59
do a quick count.
00:10:10
As you can see here with my beautiful
00:10:11
handwriting, there is 30 total tracks.
00:10:15
Wait, you're telling me there's only 29
00:10:17
tracks? Well, think again. Because there
00:10:19
was a track that leaked in this trailer.
00:10:21
You can briefly skim Rainbow Road, and
00:10:24
that makes sense because there's
00:10:26
suspiciously one cup missing being the
00:10:28
special cup. So, there might be even
00:10:30
more than 30 tracks total. So, let's
00:10:33
have a look at all the tracks that
00:10:34
aren't named yet. I'll show footage for
00:10:36
the ones I have, and I do have footage
00:10:38
for almost all of them. We have Peach
00:10:40
Beach from the Gamecube, Dino Dino
00:10:43
Jungle, Alter from the Gamecube, Mumu
00:10:45
Meadows from the Wii, and another fan
00:10:48
favorite from the Wii is Toad Factory.
00:10:51
Now, we have N64 State Choco Mountain,
00:10:53
which I wasn't completely sure was Choco
00:10:55
Mountain, but in this trailer where they
00:10:57
showcase playing online, it's clearly
00:10:59
visible here that it is Choco Mountain.
00:11:01
Then we have some sort of compilation of
00:11:03
Mario Circuit 1, 2, and 3. And up here,
00:11:07
well, that's clearly this game's Bowser
00:11:09
Castle. We then have some stages that
00:11:11
I'm not completely sure of what their
00:11:13
names are. This one is some kind of
00:11:15
cinema with booze. Here you're driving
00:11:17
on trees, very much akin to Wild Woods,
00:11:20
although I can't confirm that it is that
00:11:22
track. There's also this Venady state
00:11:25
where you're driving on water in this
00:11:27
city. This one with beautiful autumn
00:11:30
leaves. Oh, looks gorgeous. The giant
00:11:33
question mark stage which saw Alana
00:11:35
actually win the knockout tour.
00:11:37
Congratulations again, Alana. And then
00:11:39
there's two more stages which I've
00:11:41
actually not been able to find any
00:11:43
footage from on the website or in the
00:11:44
trailers. And it is this stage right
00:11:46
here which looks to have some kind of
00:11:48
fun slide. And this other lava stage
00:11:50
with a giant robot something. And here
00:11:54
you have the whole map where I've tried
00:11:55
to name everything that we know of. If
00:11:57
there's question marks, it's simply
00:11:58
because I don't know the title of the
00:12:01
track. And something really cool, which
00:12:03
this will really showcase just how many
00:12:05
routes there are from each map,
00:12:07
depending on which mode you're playing.
00:12:09
Boom. Take a look at that. There are so
00:12:13
many routes depending on which stage
00:12:15
you're racing from. I bet there's going
00:12:16
to be a lot of customization, but we'll
00:12:18
just have to wait for that April Direct.
00:12:20
But yeah, that was everything that I
00:12:22
could spot in Mario Kart World. all the
00:12:25
characters, all the stages, the items,
00:12:27
and also some of the gameplay changes
00:12:29
this game is bringing with it. If you
00:12:31

00:12:36

00:12:41
next one. Felix from Nintendo Life out.
