00:00:00
the Cold War baby what caused it and
00:00:02
what effects did it have well if that's
00:00:03
the question you're asking then you have
00:00:04
found the Right video My Dear pupil so
00:00:06
if you're ready to get them brain cows
00:00:07
milk let's get to it okay before we jump
00:00:09
right into the causes let me just Define
00:00:11
what we mean by Cold War in case you
00:00:13
missed it in the last video a cold war
00:00:14
describes a state of hostility that
00:00:16
exists between two states chiefly
00:00:17
characterized by an ideological struggle
00:00:19
rather than open Warfare and the
00:00:21
particular cold war that we're talking
00:00:23
about is between the United States and
00:00:24
the Soviet Union so the first cause of
00:00:26
the standoff was conflicting ideologies
00:00:28
between the two superpowers namely the
00:00:29
Dem Democratic capitalism of the United
00:00:31
States and the authoritarian communism
00:00:33
of the Soviet Union so Democratic
00:00:34
capitalism emphasizes free market
00:00:36
economics and political participation
00:00:38
from citizens but authoritarian
00:00:39
communism emphasizes strict government
00:00:41
control of the economy and
00:00:43
redistribution of wealth equally to all
00:00:45
citizens who have essentially no voice
00:00:46
in the government oh by the way if you
00:00:47
want note guys to follow along with this
00:00:49
video on all my videos then check the
00:00:50
link in the description okay so clearly
00:00:52
those two ideologies are at odds with
00:00:53
one another but why in the fresh hex
00:00:55
says you with those ideologies create
00:00:57
enough tension to alter Global
00:00:58
geopolitics for the last of the 20th
00:01:00
century I mean Americans you do you
00:01:02
Soviets you also do you well ultimately
00:01:04
the problem is that neither of these
00:01:06
ideologies are built on a you do you and
00:01:08
I do me principle both ideologies are
00:01:10
universalizing ideas meaning that those
00:01:12
who hold them want everyone else to hold
00:01:13
them as well the US wasn't satisfied to
00:01:15
keep democracy to themselves nor were
00:01:17
the Soviets satisfied to keep communism
00:01:19
to themselves each ideology can only
00:01:21
prove its Superior worth once every
00:01:23
square inch of the planet was conformed
00:01:25
to one ideology or the other so yeah
00:01:27
since the US and the Soviet Union were
00:01:29
the two great super powers of this age
00:01:30
it's not surprising that their desire to
00:01:32
spread democracy or communism throughout
00:01:34
the world would cause some uh problems
00:01:36
but then the second cause of the Cold
00:01:37
War was the mutual mistrust that existed
00:01:39
between two powers and that mistrust
00:01:41
started even before World War II had
00:01:42
ended you see before the end of the war
00:01:44
the three big Powers the US the Soviet
00:01:46
Union and Great Britain met together at
00:01:48
a series of conferences to discuss plans
00:01:49
for the post-war world and they
00:01:51
basically all agreed that Central and
00:01:52
Eastern European countries would be able
00:01:54
to hold free elections after the war was
00:01:56
over if that smells like democracy to
00:01:57
you then your sniffer is working just
00:01:59
fine but that presented a big fat
00:02:01
problem to the Soviet Union which
00:02:02
bordered those States namely that if
00:02:04
those states were Democratic and
00:02:05
capitalist well then they wouldn't be
00:02:07
Communists and remember both of these
00:02:08
ideologies want to make the whole world
00:02:10
over in their own image so Joseph Stalin
00:02:12
decided to keep those countries under
00:02:14
Soviet control to act as a buffer zone
00:02:15
between Russia and Europe therefore all
00:02:17
those Nations became communist in short
00:02:19
order and serve the purposes of the
00:02:20
Soviet Union the US not surprisingly saw
00:02:22
this as a flagrant violation of their
00:02:24
agreement to allow these nations the
00:02:26
right of self-determination and
00:02:27
democracy so mutual mistrust unlocked
00:02:29
but then they also Tangled over Germany
00:02:31
and that led to further antagonism
00:02:33
between the two superpowers so after the
00:02:34
war Germany was divided into four
00:02:36
occupation zones one of which went to
00:02:38
the Soviet Union and then the French and
00:02:39
the British and the United States
00:02:40
respectively and that occupation was
00:02:42
meant to be temporary but again Stalin
00:02:44
refused to set Eastern Germany free and
00:02:46
it quickly became another communist
00:02:47
satellite state of the Soviet Union it
00:02:49
was all of these territorial divisions
00:02:50
that led former British prime minister
00:02:52
Winston Churchill to Proclaim that an
00:02:54
iron curtain had fallen across Europe
00:02:56
therefore Guided by conflicting
00:02:57
ideologies and growing mistrust the Cold
00:02:59
War began and would last for the next
00:03:01
four decades however the implications of
00:03:03
this conflict were much larger than the
00:03:04
two superpowers alone in fact the
00:03:06
effects of this conflict reach into
00:03:08
nearly every last part of the stinking
00:03:09
world now we'll talk more about the
00:03:11
effects of the Cold War in the next
00:03:12
video including new military alliances
00:03:14
and the proliferation of nuclear weapons
00:03:16
and proxy wars and all the rest but here
00:03:17
I just want to focus on how the Cold War
00:03:19
intersected with another major
00:03:21
development during this period namely
00:03:22
decolonization so remember that each
00:03:24
power wanted their own ideology to cover
00:03:26
the whole earth and so as the process of
00:03:27
decolonization was creating dozens of
00:03:29
brand new States across the world the US
00:03:31
and the Soviet Union race to influence
00:03:33
each of these new States and win them to
00:03:35
their respective size like two team
00:03:37
captains on the playground picking teams
00:03:38
for kickball and so all of these nations
00:03:40
are finally becoming free of colonial
00:03:42
rule and establishing their own paths to
00:03:44
Independence in the United States and
00:03:45
the Soviet Union started seeing them as
00:03:47
pwns in their larger ideological
00:03:48
struggle and so this growing pressure
00:03:50
for newly independent nations to join
00:03:52
one side or the other of this superpower
00:03:54
conflict that had nothing to do with
00:03:55
them was kind of a bummer however some
00:03:57
groups and individuals in these newly
00:03:59
forming States refused to be Pawns in
00:04:01
this global conflict which in many ways
00:04:03
would make them dependent on more
00:04:04
powerful Nations which is exactly the
00:04:06
situation that they had just escaped in
00:04:08
their recent Colonial past and therefore
00:04:09
something called the non-aligned
00:04:11
movement was born it was led by
00:04:12
Indonesian president ammed sucaro who
00:04:14
hosted the first meeting of this
00:04:15
movement in 1955 and there 29 African
00:04:18
and Asian heads of state met among the
00:04:20
most significant being India Ghana
00:04:21
Indonesia and Egypt and they all
00:04:23
represented new states that were
00:04:24
formerly colonies or those still
00:04:26
resisting colonial rule in search of
00:04:28
Independence and they described
00:04:29
themselves as non-aligned in order to
00:04:31
communicate that they refused to be
00:04:32
controlled by the conflict between these
00:04:34
two superpowers therefore the
00:04:35
non-aligned movement represented an
00:04:37
alternative to the existing economic
00:04:39
political and social orders created by
00:04:40
the Cold War rivalry however leaders of
00:04:42
non-aligned nations were also shrewd and
00:04:44
they knew how to take advantage of the
00:04:45
Cold War rivalry by figing support for
00:04:47
one side or the other some non-aligned
00:04:49
states were able to gain weapons and
00:04:50
resources that they needed for their own
00:04:52
defense and development for example
00:04:53
Indonesia had no problem receiving aid
00:04:55
from the Soviet Union and it struggled
00:04:56
to create a post-war state but they also
00:04:58
had no problem positiv destroying the
00:05:00
Communist party there racking up
00:05:02
something like half a million deaths in
00:05:03
the process Okay click here to keep
