- 00:00:09hi everybody welcome to my talk today
- 00:00:12six tips to support your career
- 00:00:14progression in nursing and i hope you
- 00:00:16find them helpful
- 00:00:18first thing to say is failure will not
- 00:00:21define your future career and i'm a
- 00:00:24prime example of that
- 00:00:26the picture of me there in the 1980s
- 00:00:28with my hat on i'm a lot grayer now
- 00:00:32we had a vocational training linked to
- 00:00:34schools of nursing and i was bullied by
- 00:00:37my first mentor
- 00:00:39and it was devastating and i very nearly
- 00:00:43left nursing
- 00:00:45and i remember her shouting at me on the
- 00:00:47ward areas and at the time
- 00:00:49it was very hierarchical that nursing
- 00:00:51was not a degree profession then and we
- 00:00:53were very much a pair of hands and i was
- 00:00:55a very timid quiet 18 year old
- 00:00:59and
- 00:01:00at the end i went and spoke to people i
- 00:01:04gained
- 00:01:05there's much less support available then
- 00:01:07than there is nowadays
- 00:01:09but i stayed i went to my second
- 00:01:11placement and the mentor could not have
- 00:01:13been nicer
- 00:01:15and i'll always remember her
- 00:01:17and
- 00:01:18it just shows really how important it is
- 00:01:22for the support and supervision of
- 00:01:24students and how it can influence you to
- 00:01:27stay or to leave or roll for example or
- 00:01:30as a student on a course
- 00:01:32and then at the end of my training i got
- 00:01:35to the end and i failed my nursing
- 00:01:37finals which was
- 00:01:38devastating and i was the only person in
- 00:01:41my cohort that failed and in the 1980s
- 00:01:44there was
- 00:01:45much less the demographic was very
- 00:01:47different job-wise we didn't have all
- 00:01:49these thousands of jobs that we have
- 00:01:51nowadays for newly registered nurses i
- 00:01:53had to move from coventry i did my nurse
- 00:01:56training in the place where i grew up
- 00:01:59and
- 00:02:00i was really scared about moving
- 00:02:03secured a role
- 00:02:04but the area i went into i hadn't got a
- 00:02:07clue whether i'd enjoy neurosciences was
- 00:02:10my first role but an again amazing
- 00:02:13supportive charge nurse again i won't
- 00:02:15ever forget him
- 00:02:17was gave me a passion for that area
- 00:02:20and would it gave me so many tips in
- 00:02:24relation to
- 00:02:26how i should treat somebody that's a new
- 00:02:28starter so all the mentoring and
- 00:02:31supervision i've had over the years from
- 00:02:33really good supervisors i've taken to
- 00:02:36learn from them to try and do the same
- 00:02:38to support people
- 00:02:40and
- 00:02:41from then it took me a long time to
- 00:02:43decide whether i wanted to go up a
- 00:02:45clinical management pathway and i went
- 00:02:47into education in the end and it was um
- 00:02:51only again through good supervision and
- 00:02:54through mentorship when i was registered
- 00:02:57that i came to decide that i wanted to
- 00:02:59become an educator and i've had amazing
- 00:03:01mentors throughout my career
- 00:03:04but for those of you that might have
- 00:03:06failed an assignment or are not quite
- 00:03:08sure
- 00:03:09whether nursing is for you
- 00:03:12try and access support before you make
- 00:03:15that decision to leave if i had i would
- 00:03:17never have had the career that i've had
- 00:03:19and
- 00:03:20i absolutely love
- 00:03:22nursing and our profession and i
- 00:03:24couldn't have wished for a better career
- 00:03:27so hopefully that'll give hope to some
- 00:03:28people out there if you are struggling
- 00:03:32six key tips that will help your career
- 00:03:34development from my own career 33 years
- 00:03:37as a registered nurse and
- 00:03:3928 as a nurse tutor
- 00:03:42what's really helpful is to know what
- 00:03:44career pathways and opportunities are
- 00:03:46available to you and there are many more
- 00:03:48opportunities available nowadays to when
- 00:03:50i started my career
- 00:03:53know how to access support supervision
- 00:03:56and career advice which i'll give you
- 00:03:58some tips for
- 00:03:59aligning your professional experience
- 00:04:02and development to academic development
- 00:04:05and courses
- 00:04:06always thinking a year ahead when you're
- 00:04:09looking at aligning your academic
- 00:04:11development and applying for courses
- 00:04:14rigorously preparing for interviews
- 00:04:17as you progress
- 00:04:19up career ladder or even if you're
- 00:04:21looking at sidewood's moves
- 00:04:23for certain roles there'll be high
- 00:04:25competition
- 00:04:26and being patient and not putting
- 00:04:29pressure on yourself is really important
- 00:04:33so the first area know what career
- 00:04:36pathways and opportunities are available
- 00:04:39we have never been in
- 00:04:41a time in nursing where we have so many
- 00:04:44research opportunities internship
- 00:04:47opportunities different types of roles
- 00:04:49different settings
- 00:04:51than we have nowadays
- 00:04:54to do your research go and have a look
- 00:04:56on employer websites intranet sites nhs
- 00:05:00jobs there's other national websites to
- 00:05:02look for jobs
- 00:05:03and
- 00:05:04look out for scholarships research
- 00:05:07internships
- 00:05:08network with experienced staff locally
- 00:05:11and nationally
- 00:05:12shadow others as well to see what
- 00:05:15opportunities are out there and
- 00:05:17interestingly
- 00:05:19you may think a role would suit your
- 00:05:21skill set
- 00:05:23and it it's interesting when people come
- 00:05:25to me and say i want to become a charge
- 00:05:27nurse or a team leader for example or i
- 00:05:29want to become a clinical educator or an
- 00:05:31advanced nurse practitioner or a
- 00:05:33researcher
- 00:05:35the first thing i will say is go and
- 00:05:37talk to people in those roles go and
- 00:05:38book informal visits do some shadowing
- 00:05:41and interestingly
- 00:05:43there'll be a percentage that will come
- 00:05:45back and say actually i did not realize
- 00:05:47that is what that role entails
- 00:05:50and also across employers there will be
- 00:05:53different slightly different job
- 00:05:54descriptions and personal specifications
- 00:05:56so a role a clinical um a nurse educator
- 00:06:00role
- 00:06:01practice development nurse in one trust
- 00:06:03might be slightly different in another
- 00:06:04we don't have standardization nationally
- 00:06:06currently
- 00:06:08so it's important to go and book
- 00:06:10informal visits and go and do that
- 00:06:11shadowing
- 00:06:13another key thing to think about looking
- 00:06:15at opportunities you can't apply for a
- 00:06:17role
- 00:06:18or an opportunity if you do not meet the
- 00:06:20essential in a job description or
- 00:06:22personal specification
- 00:06:24so you've got these essential criteria
- 00:06:27versus desirable so the essential might
- 00:06:29be certain qualifications that you have
- 00:06:31to have
- 00:06:32desirable it you can acquire those
- 00:06:35qualifications in the role
- 00:06:37or experiences in the role
- 00:06:39so do you need a masters or a post
- 00:06:42registration specialist course to apply
- 00:06:44for this opportunity
- 00:06:46so that's important to look at that in
- 00:06:49advance
- 00:06:52looking at career pathways every person
- 00:06:54is different career pathways change
- 00:06:57according to personal circumstance and
- 00:06:59no pathway suits everybody when i
- 00:07:01started out you could see i had a really
- 00:07:03difficult start didn't quite know what i
- 00:07:05wanted to do but with good support i
- 00:07:08developed a passion for an area
- 00:07:11and but i've had times in my career
- 00:07:13where i
- 00:07:15met
- 00:07:16a well for example i met a lecturer
- 00:07:18practitioner when we moved to a degree
- 00:07:21profession
- 00:07:22and i thought well i really want to
- 00:07:24become a lecturer practitioner and these
- 00:07:26were roles set up that were a bridge
- 00:07:28between the theoretical aspects of
- 00:07:31nursing you'd go and teach for half of
- 00:07:33your role in a university and then your
- 00:07:35other half you would be in practice and
- 00:07:37i eventually became a lecturer
- 00:07:39practitioner in my specialist area of
- 00:07:42neurosciences
- 00:07:43which was my ideal role
- 00:07:46and but to become that lecturer
- 00:07:48practitioner i was
- 00:07:50at the time i was a
- 00:07:52sister nursing sister at the time
- 00:07:54i spoke to a lecturer practitioner and i
- 00:07:57knew that i had to gain certain
- 00:07:59qualifications and do a master's to
- 00:08:01become a lecturer practitioner
- 00:08:04so i had to think about how am i going
- 00:08:06to do those courses and start aligning
- 00:08:09my career and it was quite slowly
- 00:08:11progressing but i got there and i was a
- 00:08:14bit of a plodder i would say with my
- 00:08:16education but i did it and i started to
- 00:08:18gain a real um
- 00:08:21interest in critiquing articles and
- 00:08:23writing and again that developed later
- 00:08:25in my career
- 00:08:27but when i was in the middle of my
- 00:08:28master's i had to go through a
- 00:08:30bereavement and i had to leave for a
- 00:08:32year to have time out for a year so it's
- 00:08:35just being aware that your personal
- 00:08:38circumstances will affect where you're
- 00:08:40going with your career and there'll be
- 00:08:41times where you might know exactly where
- 00:08:43you're going and other times where you
- 00:08:45haven't got a clue and that's fine
- 00:08:46that's natural that's that happens
- 00:08:49others will be very ambitious and i
- 00:08:51became very ambitious when i knew i had
- 00:08:55that role that i was aspiring to and i
- 00:08:57tried to do everything i could possibly
- 00:08:59to align my professional experience and
- 00:09:01academic courses once i knew that was
- 00:09:04where i was going
- 00:09:06and remember if you fail a module or a
- 00:09:08course you're not offered a role you can
- 00:09:11apply again or you can resit and look at
- 00:09:14alternatives learn from your interviews
- 00:09:16and you have not failed in your career
- 00:09:21looking at example career pathways you
- 00:09:23can go on nhs careers you can go on our
- 00:09:25royal college of nursing websites and
- 00:09:27you'll see different career pathways
- 00:09:29there's some fantastic videos out there
- 00:09:31of people in all different types of
- 00:09:33roles under these sort of headings and
- 00:09:35these pathways
- 00:09:37um clinical your standard clinical
- 00:09:40leadership pathway so i started with
- 00:09:42that really as a staff nurse team leader
- 00:09:46um
- 00:09:46nursing sister i didn't want to become a
- 00:09:48matron and i moved over to an
- 00:09:50educational pathway
- 00:09:52and again i started bedside teaching and
- 00:09:55then aspired to the lecturer
- 00:09:57practitioner role
- 00:09:59and or i could have gone full-time into
- 00:10:02university education there are so many
- 00:10:04different remits linked to education now
- 00:10:08and different roles and different
- 00:10:09employers offer different types of
- 00:10:11educational roles you've got your
- 00:10:13specialist nurse role or advanced nurse
- 00:10:15practitioner roles and then research
- 00:10:19there's so many research internships
- 00:10:21scholarships um national institute for
- 00:10:25health research you can go on the
- 00:10:26websites and look at what's available
- 00:10:29the royal college of nursing has
- 00:10:31fantastic links and and sort of
- 00:10:34summarizes all of those opportunities
- 00:10:36nationally as well that you can apply
- 00:10:38for
- 00:10:39and there are research roles that may be
- 00:10:41split into two so you might work half as
- 00:10:44a researcher and a half as a specialist
- 00:10:46nurse or an advanced nurse practitioner
- 00:10:50and or again looking across
- 00:10:53employer websites you'll see these
- 00:10:55opportunities um available
- 00:10:58and you've got the different settings
- 00:11:00you can work in the community in a gp
- 00:11:03practice in a prison you can work for
- 00:11:05charities you can work for private
- 00:11:07institutions you've got all these
- 00:11:09different types of roles we don't have
- 00:11:12um
- 00:11:13specific standard
- 00:11:15role definitions across these career
- 00:11:18pathways we've got
- 00:11:20hundreds of types of advanced nurse
- 00:11:22practitioners and specialist nurse roles
- 00:11:24and educator roles across the uk
- 00:11:27and we've got different specialisms so
- 00:11:29you've got so much more choice nowadays
- 00:11:32so go out there and see what's out there
- 00:11:36second tip know how to access support
- 00:11:38supervision and career advice so you
- 00:11:41need to find somebody that you trust
- 00:11:43who's a good role model who offers sound
- 00:11:46positive and constructive career advice
- 00:11:48and support and that might be somebody
- 00:11:50locally or externally now when i started
- 00:11:54out in my career i wrote my first
- 00:11:56publication i wrote a letter to the
- 00:11:58nursing times i think it was late 1980s
- 00:12:01or early 1990s now
- 00:12:04and i was given the wrong advice to be
- 00:12:07to go into education so i wrote this
- 00:12:10stroppy little letter to the nursing
- 00:12:12times saying that there should be career
- 00:12:13advisors in nursing
- 00:12:15um so that we are advised correctly this
- 00:12:18was in the late 1980s
- 00:12:20and it was published and i then got
- 00:12:24contacted by
- 00:12:25somebody in the school of nursing i
- 00:12:27think at the time who agreed with me
- 00:12:30and she started to act as a career
- 00:12:32advisor for me which was amazing really
- 00:12:35interesting now because i look at career
- 00:12:37advising as part of my role so it shows
- 00:12:39how full circle we've gone
- 00:12:41and but during my career i had
- 00:12:45when i first started i was getting
- 00:12:47advice from
- 00:12:48the charge nurse in my first role
- 00:12:51because i wanted to become a team leader
- 00:12:54in neurosciences but then it became
- 00:12:56evident that if i was going to go into
- 00:12:58an educational role that i needed to
- 00:13:00look at different people to advise me so
- 00:13:03talking to lecturer practitioners people
- 00:13:06the university leads that were running
- 00:13:07education courses because i wanted sound
- 00:13:11advice because you need to ensure the
- 00:13:12advice you're given is correct because
- 00:13:14you can go down the wrong pathway or
- 00:13:16apply for the wrong course for example
- 00:13:18so i've had different people during my
- 00:13:20career locally externally
- 00:13:23nationally even that you can network
- 00:13:25with
- 00:13:26and that's really important
- 00:13:28i have
- 00:13:29a video coming out on post registration
- 00:13:32education again that summarizes some of
- 00:13:34that information
- 00:13:36third tip aligning your professional
- 00:13:39experiences and development with your
- 00:13:42academic development is one of the most
- 00:13:45important things you can do to support
- 00:13:47your career development
- 00:13:50post registration education the
- 00:13:52connections you make the role models you
- 00:13:54observe the supervisors and networks of
- 00:13:57support that you have in place are
- 00:13:59essential to nurses professional
- 00:14:02development
- 00:14:03so do your groundwork be proactive when
- 00:14:06you choose roles and career pathways and
- 00:14:09most importantly be well informed and
- 00:14:11choose wisely so for newly registered
- 00:14:14nurses don't leave that first role to
- 00:14:16chance you deserve
- 00:14:18you deserve supervision you deserve
- 00:14:21preceptorship
- 00:14:23and if you don't get it
- 00:14:25plan to move and set up your next role
- 00:14:28and um it's really important that in the
- 00:14:32future
- 00:14:33you look at your academic development in
- 00:14:37advance which i'll talk through because
- 00:14:38it links nicely on to the next slide
- 00:14:41so this is just an example template of
- 00:14:45the sort of professional development
- 00:14:47that aligns to
- 00:14:49i've focused on education role here
- 00:14:53going up a career ladder
- 00:14:55and the academic alignment for those of
- 00:14:58you that are aspiring to go up and
- 00:15:01progress on a career ladder
- 00:15:03i've linked it to the agenda for change
- 00:15:05pay bans i know that some people
- 00:15:07[Music]
- 00:15:09would rather i don't do that
- 00:15:11or would rather we don't look at the
- 00:15:12bands but realistically the bands are on
- 00:15:15most jobs you will see a banding
- 00:15:17structure that links to the agenda for
- 00:15:18change and you'll see
- 00:15:20um
- 00:15:21bands aligned at an education bands that
- 00:15:26align to a six and to a band seven for
- 00:15:29educators and employers will have
- 00:15:31slightly different personal
- 00:15:32specifications but generally the job
- 00:15:35descriptions align um because they've
- 00:15:37got to align to agenda for change
- 00:15:40so
- 00:15:41professional development if you are
- 00:15:43looking to become a practice development
- 00:15:45nurse clinical nurse educator clinical
- 00:15:47educator it could be called something
- 00:15:49else at a band six from a band five
- 00:15:51you'll see that looking in the middle
- 00:15:53column
- 00:15:54that usually they will be asking for
- 00:15:58some experience a one year two year
- 00:16:00experience in health care
- 00:16:03supervising mentoring in practice and an
- 00:16:05active interest demonstrated in
- 00:16:07education so if you know that to become
- 00:16:10a band six that is what they are
- 00:16:12expecting
- 00:16:14as a five you can start aligning your
- 00:16:17professional experiences and you might
- 00:16:19go and talk to an educator in your area
- 00:16:22and say i'm really interested in
- 00:16:23education can i link into your new
- 00:16:26starter teaching program and do a
- 00:16:28session on
- 00:16:30an area of practice that you're
- 00:16:31interested in
- 00:16:33you could do it you could link to
- 00:16:35education by linking to student nurses
- 00:16:38and orientating student nurses when they
- 00:16:40come to your area
- 00:16:42you
- 00:16:43could
- 00:16:45write competencies or look at induction
- 00:16:47packs for students or for newly
- 00:16:49registered nurses
- 00:16:51all of these things link to education
- 00:16:54and link to in brackets education link
- 00:16:56role so
- 00:16:58there's nothing stopping you as a band 5
- 00:17:00if you know you're starting to develop
- 00:17:02that interest of starting to support
- 00:17:05educators in the role if you don't have
- 00:17:08any educators then start linking to your
- 00:17:10line manager and say why don't we look
- 00:17:12at
- 00:17:13linking and supporting education in this
- 00:17:15area
- 00:17:17on the right hand side you'll see
- 00:17:18looking at a band six a post
- 00:17:21qualification certificate in education
- 00:17:23so that's what i did i did a certificate
- 00:17:25in education to see because i was quite
- 00:17:28shy i would never have thought i'd have
- 00:17:30been able to get up and do lectures
- 00:17:32later in my life i did but i started
- 00:17:35with the certificate in education and
- 00:17:37you develop confidence you develop tips
- 00:17:40to help you present as you experience
- 00:17:43and you learn from your mistakes
- 00:17:46and then if you look at a band 7 where
- 00:17:48you're doing more of a leadership you
- 00:17:50might be linking and supporting other
- 00:17:53educators
- 00:17:54covering a lot of areas rather than just
- 00:17:56one clinical setting for example
- 00:17:59you might have a little bit more
- 00:18:00experience you might have previously
- 00:18:02worked as a practice development nurse
- 00:18:05you might be a team leader with
- 00:18:07transferable skills
- 00:18:09and you might do a postgraduate
- 00:18:11certificate in education or a diploma in
- 00:18:14education or a masters
- 00:18:17it's not set in stone these academic
- 00:18:19qualifications or the experiences but
- 00:18:21you will find that jobs align on the
- 00:18:24personal specification and it will give
- 00:18:26you more chance at interview if you
- 00:18:29start to align in some way your academic
- 00:18:32courses and your professional
- 00:18:34development so i hope that table
- 00:18:36explains um in some way what i'm trying
- 00:18:38to explain hopefully it does
- 00:18:41academic credit it's important as well
- 00:18:43to think about the academic credits
- 00:18:45you're doing for courses number one as
- 00:18:47registered nurses you should be
- 00:18:50supporting support workers health and
- 00:18:52social care support workers nursing
- 00:18:54assistants clinical support workers
- 00:18:57to do courses because you'll retain them
- 00:19:00in their role and they may eventually go
- 00:19:02on and do an apprenticeship or go and do
- 00:19:04a pre-registration degree at university
- 00:19:07and
- 00:19:08it's helpful to know what credits align
- 00:19:10so in england we've got the level three
- 00:19:13um to four
- 00:19:15to five apprenticeship for
- 00:19:18say for example for support workers
- 00:19:20foundation degree level five might link
- 00:19:22to a nursing associate role
- 00:19:25pre-registration degree
- 00:19:28for nursing level six or all registered
- 00:19:30nurses should be level six
- 00:19:32and then masters would be level seven
- 00:19:34and doctor at level eight and it's
- 00:19:36important to have an awareness of
- 00:19:38courses if you're a line manager and i
- 00:19:40know lots of people have put that slide
- 00:19:42up in their office for example when
- 00:19:43they're trying to explain to support
- 00:19:45workers the um different credit levels
- 00:19:48and they will be slightly different
- 00:19:50across universities sometimes and across
- 00:19:53the four nations as well because
- 00:19:54scotland has a different
- 00:19:56quality certificate framework
- 00:19:59but it's important to know when you're
- 00:20:01applying for courses that
- 00:20:03you
- 00:20:04understand what level of course you're
- 00:20:05applying for i do know people that have
- 00:20:07applied for
- 00:20:09a course that they thought was a
- 00:20:10master's course and actually was a level
- 00:20:12six level post registration course for
- 00:20:14example and you might have um
- 00:20:17i
- 00:20:18know many nurses that tried to get
- 00:20:20credits on courses then they might do
- 00:20:22one post registration course at masters
- 00:20:25and um say for example
- 00:20:29um i don't know a teaching course
- 00:20:31um level seven and then they're wanting
- 00:20:34to go on and do a leadership in masters
- 00:20:37and they want to try they think that
- 00:20:39they can just join it onto a masters
- 00:20:41with the university and you can't do
- 00:20:43that you have to go and approach the
- 00:20:44program lead and see if you can get
- 00:20:46what's called pellet or
- 00:20:48get a prior
- 00:20:50um
- 00:20:50learning accreditation where you can get
- 00:20:53credited and if you can get credited
- 00:20:55that's amazing some people do a course
- 00:20:58that could have been credited and don't
- 00:20:59ask the programme lead so that's why
- 00:21:01it's important to understand what level
- 00:21:04and credits you're acquiring as you go
- 00:21:06along post registration
- 00:21:09your learning and development choose a
- 00:21:11collaborative supportive culture that
- 00:21:13will enable you to thrive if you're
- 00:21:15newly registered i've got lots of tips
- 00:21:17of how to help you choose your first
- 00:21:19registered nurse post if you're
- 00:21:21interested
- 00:21:22access support from local educators
- 00:21:25managers experienced staff and clinical
- 00:21:27buddies and finding out how education
- 00:21:30systems work early on is really helpful
- 00:21:33and ensuring that you get sign off on
- 00:21:35your professional development reviews
- 00:21:37and your annual reviews which will help
- 00:21:40with you aligning your professional
- 00:21:42development with your academic courses
- 00:21:46so number four think a year ahead and
- 00:21:50this really
- 00:21:52is because nurse education
- 00:21:54and
- 00:21:55applying for courses
- 00:21:57thinking about your next role is really
- 00:22:00important you know nhs trusts community
- 00:22:03hospital trusts universities
- 00:22:06reflect business models in that their
- 00:22:08financial years are um
- 00:22:10and and spending
- 00:22:12is organized a year in advance so when
- 00:22:15you're looking to apply for courses and
- 00:22:17that request funding
- 00:22:19and when you're looking at aligning your
- 00:22:21career you would need to think a year in
- 00:22:25i've got some good videos coming out on
- 00:22:28post registration nurse education and
- 00:22:30applying for course funding
- 00:22:32and another video on influencing change
- 00:22:35and supporting others in your role
- 00:22:38both of which are linking to this
- 00:22:40aligning and planning a year ahead the
- 00:22:43influencing change and supporting others
- 00:22:45um links to what i mentioned earlier
- 00:22:47about um thinking about the next role on
- 00:22:51what your interests are so if you were
- 00:22:53looking at education you would be
- 00:22:55supporting students start to do that as
- 00:22:58a an experienced five
- 00:23:00influencing change if you were going to
- 00:23:02become i don't know
- 00:23:03go into a clinical academic career or
- 00:23:05research that you might take on a
- 00:23:07service improvement project and try and
- 00:23:09look at leading
- 00:23:11a project or collaborating and
- 00:23:13supporting a project in your area
- 00:23:18looking in advance to do that you need
- 00:23:21to access support so knowing your
- 00:23:23clinical educational team structures in
- 00:23:25your area who's responsible for your
- 00:23:28immediate long-term learning needs and
- 00:23:30professional development and they can
- 00:23:32advise you and help you align these
- 00:23:34pathways
- 00:23:36how are management and educational teams
- 00:23:39structured where you work do you have
- 00:23:41corporate education leads or you could
- 00:23:43work in a very small
- 00:23:45private um with a small private employer
- 00:23:48that doesn't have all of these
- 00:23:49structures that potentially large nhs
- 00:23:52trusts would have but they can still be
- 00:23:55key people that will help advise you and
- 00:23:59enable you to access funding for for
- 00:24:01your development
- 00:24:02local clinical educators and new line
- 00:24:05managers
- 00:24:06you need to know how to book on courses
- 00:24:08how do you request financial support and
- 00:24:11study leave um paid study leave and
- 00:24:13study time to attend academic courses
- 00:24:15and that's all on my previous um the
- 00:24:18video on post registration education
- 00:24:20lots of tips on there
- 00:24:23fifth tip rigorously prepare for
- 00:24:26interviews as you move up a career
- 00:24:28ladder or you may go for a role a
- 00:24:31sideways move it might be your ideal
- 00:24:33role the competition becomes higher for
- 00:24:36roles
- 00:24:37when you stop at your first newly
- 00:24:39registered nurse roles currently
- 00:24:42the situation is we have lots and lots
- 00:24:44of vacancies
- 00:24:46um for newly registered nurses in the uk
- 00:24:49that may change and in five years time
- 00:24:51it might be very different as i said
- 00:24:53earlier in the 1980s there was limited
- 00:24:55jobs i had three posts in england that i
- 00:24:58could apply for when i failed my nursing
- 00:25:00finals there was two in london and one
- 00:25:03in cambridge completely different to
- 00:25:05nowadays so it may change but currently
- 00:25:09there is a lot of option for newly
- 00:25:11registered nurses
- 00:25:13as you move up a career ladder or go for
- 00:25:15sidewood's moves
- 00:25:17there won't be because there'll be more
- 00:25:19people applying for less roles that
- 00:25:21become available
- 00:25:23so naturally
- 00:25:24most areas do not have the same number
- 00:25:26of deputy sisters or team leaders
- 00:25:29and clinical nurse educators as newly
- 00:25:32registered nurses
- 00:25:34so never presume
- 00:25:36that you are going to be offered a role
- 00:25:38and prepare
- 00:25:40to have the most chance of success
- 00:25:42and i have a video coming out on
- 00:25:45preparing for band six seven nurse
- 00:25:48interviews and that that it would be
- 00:25:50applicable for education clinical
- 00:25:52um career pathway research there's just
- 00:25:56key tips in there for going on to the
- 00:25:57next sort of level of interview
- 00:26:02final tip finally be patient and don't
- 00:26:05put pressure on yourself
- 00:26:07your career is not a race it takes time
- 00:26:09to find a role specialism setting that
- 00:26:12suits your needs and you may be
- 00:26:15somebody where you did know exactly
- 00:26:17where you wanted to go when you start
- 00:26:19and that's fantastic and i know students
- 00:26:21that from previous life experiences or
- 00:26:24they cared for somebody that was ill
- 00:26:26um had cancer that they knew that that
- 00:26:29was that area that they wanted to go
- 00:26:31into but many people won't know and it
- 00:26:34takes time
- 00:26:35you won't know unless you try you
- 00:26:37develop transferable skills throughout
- 00:26:39your career you learn from all of those
- 00:26:42positive experiences and challenging
- 00:26:44experiences as well i never realized
- 00:26:47that
- 00:26:49i would end up
- 00:26:50mentoring and supervising students when
- 00:26:52i was bullied by that mentor and was
- 00:26:54about to leave nursing and i've sort of
- 00:26:57flipped it on its head really and
- 00:26:58realized this is good mentorship and
- 00:27:01this is terrible mentorship um accessing
- 00:27:04funding for courses may take time too
- 00:27:07and ultimately your mental and physical
- 00:27:10well-being comes before work
- 00:27:15so i hope some of those tips might help
- 00:27:17you
- 00:27:18do put comments in the youtube comments
