for the last year you have not had a
  • 00:00:03
losing month no Fe went on one product
  • 00:00:06
where I would do the same thing on each
  • 00:00:08
trade and not have to think about
  • 00:00:10
strategy you've been trading naked short
  • 00:00:14
yes that's it yes so you're saying the
  • 00:00:16
majority of days you don't have to do
  • 00:00:17
anything yeah that makes me happy a
  • 00:00:19
little bit different approach I would
  • 00:00:21
    say a lot different approach there's a
  • 00:00:23
    lot
  • 00:00:25
    [Music]
  • 00:00:28
of hello everybody we are back it's
  • 00:00:31
    another Rising Star session looking
  • 00:00:33
forward to this one today Jim welcome
  • 00:00:36
thank you Tom I'm glad to be here to
  • 00:00:38
give everybody a little bit of
  • 00:00:40
background um Jim's been training for 44
  • 00:00:43
    years so he's he's that's that's my you
  • 00:00:46
know that's what I start not the first
  • 00:00:48
rodeo yeah yeah yeah I know 44 years is
  • 00:00:50
kind of my the beginning of my career
  • 00:00:53
too and kind of 1981 is and uh um you
  • 00:00:59
are a physics professor at uh Boston
  • 00:01:02
University and as you were telling me
  • 00:01:04
    before you've been there 36 I've been
  • 00:01:07
there since 1988 okay so 36 years I was
  • 00:01:10
hired as a 10-year professor and I was
  • 00:01:12
the youngest one in physics at the time
  • 00:01:15
I love it and before that you were at
  • 00:01:17
Harvard and blah blah blah and so so the
  • 00:01:20
the tie in there and the only reason I
  • 00:01:21
bring that up is the tie in there is
  • 00:01:23
that we you know we're always promoting
  • 00:01:24
tasty as this as this a little bit
  • 00:01:28
    different approach to finance more
  • 00:01:30
    probabilistic more quantitative more
  • 00:01:33
statistical and I think kind of it I
  • 00:01:36
would say a lot different approach don't
  • 00:01:38
you know lot different approach lot
  • 00:01:40
different approach and and you've been a
  • 00:01:41
tasty Trader now probably over 10 years
  • 00:01:44
yeah and we have a lot of similarities
  • 00:01:46
in the sense that you know we both
  • 00:01:47
traded during the 1987 crash we've both
  • 00:01:50
learned a lot about markets and trading
  • 00:01:53
um you know in uh over that period of
  • 00:01:56
time I think we've changed a lot of our
  • 00:01:58
    methodologies and things like that
  • 00:02:00
    but what does
  • 00:02:03
a first of all as a physics professor
  • 00:02:06
and for doing for as long as you've been
  • 00:02:08
doing you told me before some of it's
  • 00:02:10
teaching but some of it's also some of
  • 00:02:12
it's research yeah so uh we are a
  • 00:02:16
research institution and uh you know I
  • 00:02:19
live for that kind of stuff I work at
  • 00:02:21
the St Large Hadron Collider we
  • 00:02:23
colliding crons looking at the smallest
  • 00:02:25
distance scales that have ever ever been
  • 00:02:27
probed we discover the higs Bon right
  • 00:02:30
that's the origin of mass in the
  • 00:02:32
universe and uh I only know what I know
  • 00:02:35
from big bang theories so you have to be
  • 00:02:37
give a couple and so I just have to say
  • 00:02:39
this because I'm so excited about it now
  • 00:02:40
I'm working on the dark energy
  • 00:02:42
spectroscopic instrument uh we're in the
  • 00:02:45
process of measuring 50 million galaxies
  • 00:02:48
to make a 3D map of the universe and
  • 00:02:50
figure out its equation of State you
  • 00:02:52
know why it expands the way it does
  • 00:02:56
that's against the polar gravity very
  • 00:02:57
    exciting that that's very cool I I don't
  • 00:03:00
think I fully understand it I think you
  • 00:03:02
know I I I kind of wanted to go down the
  • 00:03:04
quantum Computing path with you but then
  • 00:03:06
    again I don't feel like I don't feel
  • 00:03:08
like I'm ready to have that conversation
  • 00:03:10
yet um but uh super interesting so how
  • 00:03:14
much time do you have to actually trade
  • 00:03:17
so I I try to streamline you know this
  • 00:03:19
as you know it can it could be a
  • 00:03:20
    full-time thing and I you know if I I'm
  • 00:03:24
I'm in uh immersed in my research and
  • 00:03:26
keing so I have to kind of pick and
  • 00:03:28
choose um so this is part of the reason
  • 00:03:32
I wanted to have some uh disciplined
  • 00:03:35
approach where I would do the same thing
  • 00:03:38
on each trade and not have to think
  • 00:03:39
about strategy you know just why I just
  • 00:03:41
want to make it routine that's why I
  • 00:03:44
decided to concentrate on one product
  • 00:03:47
and I want something that is around us
  • 00:03:50
all the time and we think about and
  • 00:03:52
that's energy and it's seems to be
  • 00:03:54
always volatile which the option Trader
  • 00:03:57
    well let's go let's let's think about
  • 00:03:59
let's go back a little bit in time and
  • 00:04:01
think about kind of before we get into
  • 00:04:03
your you know your current story um talk
  • 00:04:07
to me about like what have you been
  • 00:04:10
doing for the last four decades as a
  • 00:04:12
Trader investor you know um how so I was
  • 00:04:17
trying different things it reminded me
  • 00:04:18
once of uh of a story I heard you tell
  • 00:04:22
when you were on the floor and okay and
  • 00:04:24
the story was I don't remember the
  • 00:04:25
detail but you would do something
  • 00:04:28
regularly with a friend of yours and you
  • 00:04:32
it worked and worked and worked it
  • 00:04:33
always worked until it didn't yeah and
  • 00:04:37
so for me I ended up
  • 00:04:39
    selling
  • 00:04:42
    puts uh very low
  • 00:04:45
deltas and it worked right until it
  • 00:04:48
didn't right and I learn yall very
  • 00:04:51
quickly that it's far more risky it's a
  • 00:04:54
    little bit cont counterintuitive it's
  • 00:04:55
far more risky to have a greater number
  • 00:04:58
of contracts at lower Delta than a small
  • 00:05:02
number at high Delta size kills
  • 00:05:04
basically size and it's always comes
  • 00:05:06
down to the number of units and I think
  • 00:05:09
that is a lesson that every Trader
  • 00:05:13
alerts and see how is Big it's
  • 00:05:15
$70,000 no contract yeah you're talking
  • 00:05:18
about Futures we're right there yet okay
  • 00:05:20
    we're just okay but
  • 00:05:22
um I think every Trader at some point
  • 00:05:25
early on in their career learns that you
  • 00:05:27
know how how how we we like see the
  • 00:05:31
network how how how big small really is
  • 00:05:34
right and it is getting through that
  • 00:05:37
challenge making you through that hurdle
  • 00:05:40
whether it's the crash of 1987 or 2000
  • 00:05:42
or 2008 whatever it is you know learning
  • 00:05:45
that um because most of the time puts or
  • 00:05:49
Schmutz and and you know that's it so we
  • 00:05:53
go you go through this process and
  • 00:05:55
    you're trading I mean you've pretty much
  • 00:05:57
been trading derivatives going back for
  • 00:05:59
almost four decades yes yeah and so I
  • 00:06:02
mean the complexity of derivativ the
  • 00:06:04
models behind it is I would assume that
  • 00:06:06
that part's relatively simple yeah so I
  • 00:06:08
mean think back of the old days it was
  • 00:06:10
pretty pretty hard so I had to go and
  • 00:06:13
buy the Wall Street Journal and there
  • 00:06:15
were the tables of option yes in the
  • 00:06:17
back and there weren't they couldn't
  • 00:06:19
print everything you know but only the
  • 00:06:20
big ones were there and uh by the time I
  • 00:06:23
got that information it was old right so
  • 00:06:26
it was uh it was hard yeah yeah and then
  • 00:06:30
and then we start building pretty cool
  • 00:06:32
technology in the early 2000s and then
  • 00:06:34
obviously tasty comes along and all of a
  • 00:06:37
sudden you know at your fingertips is
  • 00:06:40
very cool technology really simple to
  • 00:06:42
use and all the data and everything is
  • 00:06:44
right in front of you right so now that
  • 00:06:46
kind of opens up you know opens The
  • 00:06:48
Floodgate so to speak right and you can
  • 00:06:50
pretty much do anything you want to do
  • 00:06:51
right um and in the end your most of
  • 00:06:56
your success has been since you
  • 00:06:58
    gravitated towards
  • 00:07:00
uh Futures and Futures options but
  • 00:07:03
before that you were mostly equities you
  • 00:07:05
think or no yeah mostly equities and
  • 00:07:07
options on equities I would say is uh I
  • 00:07:10
started out like everybody would you
  • 00:07:13
know dabbling in stocks and I I chose
  • 00:07:17
stocks that I felt I knew something
  • 00:07:19
about like computer companies for simple
  • 00:07:21
you know products that I use right sure
  • 00:07:23
and uh high-tech things and that was uh
  • 00:07:27
that was fun and then I I quickly
  • 00:07:29
learned learn that you know there's
  • 00:07:30
something called an option you know and
  • 00:07:32
if you own that stock you know why not
  • 00:07:34
sell a call you know and boost your
  • 00:07:38
return a little bit right and uh you
  • 00:07:40
know from there it just uh got deeper
  • 00:07:42
and deeper into options and now I you
  • 00:07:45
know that's all I really do you know
  • 00:07:47
except for some things maybe in the
  • 00:07:48
    retirement account that are more
  • 00:07:50
    conservative right it's all options
  • 00:07:52
primarily you're trading now is I mean
  • 00:07:55
    obviously you're indifferent to options
  • 00:07:57
on equities or options on Futures but
  • 00:07:59
    you're primarily trading options on
  • 00:08:01
Futures and you're also trading the
  • 00:08:04
Futures contracts when you need to Flat
  • 00:08:07
when when need to flatten out from an an
  • 00:08:09
assignment or you know or a settlement
  • 00:08:13
exactly okay and especially if if I come
  • 00:08:15
to something that's in the money and I'm
  • 00:08:18
rolling it at the last minute there
  • 00:08:20
might be a spread sure of even a couple
  • 00:08:23
pennies that I don't want to pay I'll
  • 00:08:25
let it expire and at the second
  • 00:08:28
expires I'll even that I'll zero that
  • 00:08:30
position by buying or selling the
  • 00:08:32
contract sure I'm just going to guess
  • 00:08:34
but I'm thinking the challenge of being
  • 00:08:35
successful and as trading was really
  • 00:08:39
important to you because you've been
  • 00:08:41
kind of pretty passionate about this for
  • 00:08:43
a long time yeah is it the competition
  • 00:08:47
is it the game what is it no it's it's
  • 00:08:49
the competition and and and it's the
  • 00:08:51
    it's the it's
  • 00:08:54
the you know the motivation the really
  • 00:08:57
strong motivation to succeed so the last
  • 00:08:59
two years you've kind of um honed in and
  • 00:09:04
    and move your strategy
  • 00:09:06
    to really focus on
  • 00:09:10
    trading strangles
  • 00:09:14
incl which is crude oil corre crude oil
  • 00:09:17
is probably one of the top three most
  • 00:09:21
    active Futures options contracts sles
  • 00:09:25
and SL mq problem sles mq and uh yeah at
  • 00:09:30
this point yeah sometimes you get some
  • 00:09:32
pretty decent volume in um in 10year
  • 00:09:35
notes in ZN and ZB and gold but but
  • 00:09:39
among those depending on how hot um
  • 00:09:42
crude oil is it could be number two it
  • 00:09:44
could be number four it's in the it's in
  • 00:09:46
the it's in it's in the team picture
  • 00:09:49
okay and you've decided like what's the
  • 00:09:51
reason and and and amongst those that
  • 00:09:54
you mention crude oil is subject to so
  • 00:09:58
many world events that and shake the
  • 00:10:00
volatility and that's what we want as a
  • 00:10:02
Trader we want to see volatility because
  • 00:10:04
    that creates opportunities yeah I've
  • 00:10:06
probably said that that that's what I
  • 00:10:08
learned from you I've frankly said that
  • 00:10:09
10,000 times all you have um
  • 00:10:12
and and and kudal has been I mean let's
  • 00:10:16
face it for the last couple of years
  • 00:10:18
crude doall has been in a relatively
  • 00:10:20
narrow range um I think you know after
  • 00:10:24
the kind of the whole meltdown crash in
  • 00:10:27
in 2020 when it went negative and all
  • 00:10:30
that stuff I mean we've essentially or
  • 00:10:32
    was that 2021 I'm trying it was 2020 I
  • 00:10:34
think it was it was a first year of code
  • 00:10:36
I first year code yeah yeah um yeah ever
  • 00:10:39
since then crude dool has pretty much
  • 00:10:40
been in that range between let's call it
  • 00:10:42
high 60s to low 90s and so it's been
  • 00:10:45
relatively range Bound for you almost
  • 00:10:47
three years now but first of all why
  • 00:10:50
    crude oil liquidity liquidity and
  • 00:10:54
volatility yeah and it's you know every
  • 00:10:57
time I drive right the gas station right
  • 00:10:59
if I'm holding there's a gas station gas
  • 00:11:02
pump prices seem to react very fast if I
  • 00:11:05
drive by the gas pump and I see the
  • 00:11:07
price per gallon has gone up and I'm
  • 00:11:09
    holding a long position I don't even
  • 00:11:10
have to look at it I can just smile you
  • 00:11:13
that makes me happy well but it's all
  • 00:11:16
around us is what I'm trying to say and
  • 00:11:18
energy is so much and it seems that no
  • 00:11:21
matter how much oil there is we will
  • 00:11:24
find a way to use it and there's you
  • 00:11:26
know the demand will never dry up
  • 00:11:30
so you're trading CL mostly options but
  • 00:11:33
the interesting thing about what you're
  • 00:11:35
doing is you are trading almost
  • 00:11:40
    exclusively Monday Wednesday and
  • 00:11:44
Friday um shortterm options right so
  • 00:11:47
part of the reason for this is if I zero
  • 00:11:49
    in on one
  • 00:11:51
product I can't trade it once a month
  • 00:11:53
right because there's just not enough
  • 00:11:55
trades in year for so so I I I need to
  • 00:11:57
do every trade now I get 150 trades 150
  • 00:12:01
trades a year a year three times a week
  • 00:12:04
okay yeah three times a week times 50
  • 00:12:06
weeks yeah or well you have 150
  • 00:12:09
expirations you get up a lot more trades
  • 00:12:10
than that technically yeah yes yeah 150
  • 00:12:13
    expirations 150 expirations yeah
  • 00:12:15
counting some that aren't there for
  • 00:12:17
holidays and yeah Futures only the index
  • 00:12:20
options have a daily expiration all the
  • 00:12:22
other ones have I mean not all the other
  • 00:12:24
ones but some have Monday Wednesday
  • 00:12:25
Friday like crude all right and Futures
  • 00:12:28
    option
  • 00:12:30
are a little bit different than let's
  • 00:12:32
say like cash settled SPX options or
  • 00:12:35
something like that because they settle
  • 00:12:37
into the future they settle into the
  • 00:12:40
future and they expire at 2:30 Easter
  • 00:12:44
right the platform is not going to
  • 00:12:46
reflect that until the next day probably
  • 00:12:49
at 5:00 in the morning so you have to
  • 00:12:50
know what has happened at 2:30 to know
  • 00:12:53
your position right the 230 Eastern is
  • 00:12:54
130 Central and so it's a little bit
  • 00:12:58
different than you're used to you know
  • 00:12:59
like these are what we call these like
  • 00:13:01
the knowhow Nuance knowhow right you
  • 00:13:05
know with with with trading Futures that
  • 00:13:07
are expiring that day right and then if
  • 00:13:09
you look out in the in at at uh
  • 00:13:12
subsequent months they will have some
  • 00:13:15
different price right there could be
  • 00:13:17
Fano or you know whatever yeah yeah I
  • 00:13:20
mean the the most of the time crude
  • 00:13:23
dools in contango but sometimes which
  • 00:13:26
just means that prices go up into the
  • 00:13:28
back Mark months but sometimes it's in
  • 00:13:30
back ration which means prices go lower
  • 00:13:32
but Monday Wednesday and Friday usually
  • 00:13:34
it's pretty close to the same day I
  • 00:13:36
think we're backwardation right now are
  • 00:13:38
we here yeah yeah I don't really look at
  • 00:13:39
Monday Wednesday Friday type stuff I
  • 00:13:41
mean how's the volume on that in there
  • 00:13:44
it's good you know sometimes uh when I
  • 00:13:47
go to to set a positions say uh at
  • 00:13:51
Sunday night at 6:00 when they open I'm
  • 00:13:53
King e soon all the time yeah that's all
  • 00:13:55
they open at 6:00 sometimes the spread
  • 00:13:58
on the options is a little bit wide for
  • 00:14:00
me then I'll just wait yeah either you
  • 00:14:02
know do it before I go to bed or just
  • 00:14:03
wait until the next morning yeah have
  • 00:14:06
have you had any difficulty with
  • 00:14:09
Phils I have I have not you know if if I
  • 00:14:13
I'm when I go to do a roll if I'm in the
  • 00:14:15
money and I have to roll yeah I'm
  • 00:14:17
patient with it and if I don't get the
  • 00:14:19
trade I'll let it expire in the money
  • 00:14:22
and I'll correct that with a future
  • 00:14:25
    purchase Jim's trading a $50,000 account
  • 00:14:29
we just going to approximate $50,000
  • 00:14:31
count and for the last I think it's been
  • 00:14:35
the last little over a year you have not
  • 00:14:39
had a losing month no yeah it's it's
  • 00:14:42
actually longer than that I can't right
  • 00:14:44
AC close back but I only I only kept you
  • 00:14:46
know a real detail of it the last year
  • 00:14:49
the previous year was was a positive NP
  • 00:14:52
and I okay over the over the 12 months
  • 00:14:55
the reason he's on the rising star is
  • 00:14:57
the rising star segment is because the
  • 00:14:59
last 12 months and 12 months is is a
  • 00:15:03
pretty good um there's there's a lot of
  • 00:15:06
statistical significance to that I mean
  • 00:15:09
    150 expirations on Monday Wednesday
  • 00:15:12
Friday over 12- month period is is
  • 00:15:14
something that's important to us and
  • 00:15:17
    because it's statistically significant
  • 00:15:19
    and and
  • 00:15:21
    essentially you've been
  • 00:15:23
trading um naked short strangles yes
  • 00:15:28
    that's it yes
  • 00:15:29
and the only adjustment that I would
  • 00:15:31
make on that is you mentioned the
  • 00:15:34
range 60 to 80 or 60 to 90 whatever um
  • 00:15:39
when we get in the lower portion of that
  • 00:15:43
    I will skew the
  • 00:15:45
strangle right so that they a little L
  • 00:15:48
Deltas yeah so so not symmetric anymore
  • 00:15:51
okay let's get into details now because
  • 00:15:52
people are really interested in the
  • 00:15:54
details so first detail what Delta do
  • 00:15:57
    you start with Okay so
  • 00:16:00
I have set up my routine such that when
  • 00:16:05
I take the trade yeah I want to pick a
  • 00:16:09
strike plus and minus which is
  • 00:16:12
$1 per day to expiration so okay so so
  • 00:16:16
if it's if it's a half a day or three
  • 00:16:17
qus of the day I have to kind
  • 00:16:19
of you know interpolate that a little
  • 00:16:21
bit yeah as you know the prices the
  • 00:16:23
strikes are because you in quarter units
  • 00:16:26
you know but but typically I you know if
  • 00:16:27
I if I'm doing uh doing Sunday night for
  • 00:16:31
the Monday expiration at 2:30 I'll take
  • 00:16:34
the strikes plus and minus a dollar now
  • 00:16:37
what that does for me is I don't have to
  • 00:16:42
pick the Delta the volatility is picking
  • 00:16:45
the Delta for me if the volatility is
  • 00:16:47
low that's a very small Delta but if the
  • 00:16:50
volatility is high that's a big Delta
  • 00:16:53
and that's just exactly what I want so
  • 00:16:55
if you're doing it on Monday afternoon
  • 00:16:58
for when or for Wednesday you'll go two
  • 00:17:00
wide if you doing it on Tuesday for
  • 00:17:02
Wednesday you'll go one wide exactly and
  • 00:17:03
if you're doing it on Wednesday for
  • 00:17:05
Wednesday you're probably like 34 right
  • 00:17:08
point right and if I didn't get around
  • 00:17:10
to do it until Wednesday morning for
  • 00:17:12
Wednesday I might do a half right cuz
  • 00:17:14
it's expiring what what what does one
  • 00:17:19
point out of the money usually bring you
  • 00:17:21
because I'm just not familiar with the
  • 00:17:22
zero so one one point out of the money
  • 00:17:24
know is typically typically going to
  • 00:17:26
    bring uh $200
  • 00:17:29
per per one lot yeah that's both sides
  • 00:17:32
    together yeah so that's $600 a week
  • 00:17:34
    that's $30,000 a year that's a dollar on
  • 00:17:37
each side yes okay and if I it might be
  • 00:17:40
asymmetric it might it might be
  • 00:17:42
asymmetric I got in a quarter and.
  • 00:17:43
75 cents got got it so you don't care
  • 00:17:45
about that you're just going to go your
  • 00:17:46
your Dollar on each side right and if
  • 00:17:48
it's and if you feel like it's really
  • 00:17:49
cheap really expensive but when I say
  • 00:17:51
    dollar it's a coincidence that a dollar
  • 00:17:53
in strike price is approximately a
  • 00:17:55
dollar in premium okay that doesn't have
  • 00:17:59
to be you know there $2 that are on the
  • 00:18:02
table here one is a STK price and the
  • 00:18:04
other is a premium Collective right and
  • 00:18:05
those are two different bigs right
  • 00:18:07
    coincidentally they're they're about the
  • 00:18:08
same and we're talking about the the the
  • 00:18:11
full options not not the micos these are
  • 00:18:15
the minis and these are the the regular
  • 00:18:18
standard you know most actively traded
  • 00:18:20
options and and you're doing them day of
  • 00:18:25
or day before the max you can be is
  • 00:18:27
technically two days yes right so we
  • 00:18:31
won't talk Delta because you're just
  • 00:18:33
talking the distance and you're talking
  • 00:18:35
the amount of money you take in and then
  • 00:18:38
    so uh in
  • 00:18:40
general now you said well I take in
  • 00:18:42
    about
  • 00:18:43
$2 and what have you been able to keep
  • 00:18:46
of that $2 so that $2 would be
  • 00:18:50
    $30,000 right that's what you're doing
  • 00:18:54
is $2 so so let me tell the answer so $2
  • 00:18:56
Monday Wednesday Friday 600 600 weeks is
  • 00:19:00
    $30,000 I don't take in 30 didn't work
  • 00:19:03
every trade no of course so but I took
  • 00:19:05
    in about
  • 00:19:06
$188,000 on the year okay of that so so
  • 00:19:10
    there's a that's about a 40% return a
  • 00:19:12
little less than four no it's more than
  • 00:19:15
50 oh or turn on the 50 on the 50 on
  • 00:19:17
your net L exactly 40% yeah exactly 40%
  • 00:19:21
but that 50 was never at risk no okay
  • 00:19:24
but how much Capital are you
  • 00:19:26
using on a PR trade basis so as you know
  • 00:19:30
that's Dynamic you know it depends on
  • 00:19:32
    okay so but it's
  • 00:19:34
roughly $5 to $7,000 per so this is a
  • 00:19:38
one lot that yeah one lot yeah so this
  • 00:19:41
year I'm I'm probably going to go I'm
  • 00:19:44
I'm I'm thinking about going up to uh
  • 00:19:46
two two conts yeah see what's
  • 00:19:49
interesting about that is your win
  • 00:19:50
percent is much higher than than would
  • 00:19:52
be normally for other type of Trades
  • 00:19:54
that we do tell me about your what's
  • 00:19:57
your worst loss in the last year a few
  • 00:19:59
hundred I would say yeah but not
  • 00:20:01
thousands ever yeah I saw the results
  • 00:20:04
they're really interesting um and what
  • 00:20:08
would you do if there was some kind of
  • 00:20:11
an outlier if there's some kind of an
  • 00:20:13
outlier I would keep rolling for credit
  • 00:20:17
and keep going right I think with
  • 00:20:19
somebody like hold when you say keep
  • 00:20:22
rolling okay the so let's say I you're
  • 00:20:26
going to Monday Wednesday let have my
  • 00:20:27
    strigle yeah
  • 00:20:29
yeah oil shoots up kind of Trace me on
  • 00:20:32
the upside yeah I roll a little bit
  • 00:20:35
higher and out two days it does it again
  • 00:20:38
I roll again it does it again I roll it
  • 00:20:40
again it eventually I catch up with it
  • 00:20:42
you're going to roll from Monday to
  • 00:20:43
Wednesday then from Wednesday to Friday
  • 00:20:45
if it keeps going in yes okay but are
  • 00:20:48
you ever are you going to move when you
  • 00:20:50
roll let's say it's oil is going higher
  • 00:20:52
    so you're rolling you're you're
  • 00:20:54
    protecting you're worried about your
  • 00:20:56
call that's why you're rolling what are
  • 00:20:57
you doing with your put side you roll it
  • 00:20:58
    up
  • 00:20:59
too yeah so I it yeah so I roll that up
  • 00:21:03
so the the roll is a net credit but that
  • 00:21:08
credit is from something that was in the
  • 00:21:10
money which by definition if I kept the
  • 00:21:13
    same
  • 00:21:14
strike it would be worth more forther
  • 00:21:16
out in time yeah so usually I can go up
  • 00:21:19
and strike you can always roll it for a
  • 00:21:21
credit in the in sitation you do it
  • 00:21:23
you're always rolling for a credit but
  • 00:21:24
the credit I count is both sides because
  • 00:21:27
the put has expired worthless in this
  • 00:21:29
example and so now I can put on a new
  • 00:21:31
put and so the credit that's important
  • 00:21:33
to me is the new put plus the new call
  • 00:21:37
together has to be better than the old
  • 00:21:39
call that was in the money yeah as long
  • 00:21:41
as you stay really disciplined about
  • 00:21:42
moving that put so that you're
  • 00:21:44
    controlling that otherwise you're just
  • 00:21:45
going to be make sure a future a lot
  • 00:21:48
right either up or down because the one
  • 00:21:51
problem with zeros is that your your
  • 00:21:53
Delta is going to go from you know
  • 00:21:55
basically 50 to zero in like two ticks
  • 00:21:58
yeah and so you're going to have to move
  • 00:22:00
yeah you know I mean it's a fair
  • 00:22:02
question to ask how could this go wrong
  • 00:22:05
right there a type of question we should
  • 00:22:07
ask all the time the way it could go
  • 00:22:09
wrong is if oil kept moving very deeply
  • 00:22:13
in One Direction any extended move any
  • 00:22:16
extended move any day of the week in oil
  • 00:22:20
like what goes wrong is when you get
  • 00:22:22
like the average daily expected move at
  • 00:22:24
all I I'm not I'm not sure what it is
  • 00:22:27
    but it's it's less than a point isn't it
  • 00:22:29
far less far less yeah so what is it
  • 00:22:32
then what is it about 60 cents or 65
  • 00:22:34
cents or something like that so if you
  • 00:22:36
look at the crude oil chart of the of
  • 00:22:39
the last year yeah uh and look at the
  • 00:22:42
steepest Parts yeah the steepest part
  • 00:22:45
might go up $10 in 14 days yeah okay but
  • 00:22:50
the average is so that's 70 cents right
  • 00:22:52
so that's on a steep part of the curve
  • 00:22:54
the average is much less than 70 yeah
  • 00:22:56
but I've seen we've seen moves of you
  • 00:22:58
know2 and half $3 you know on a single
  • 00:23:01
day sure I think the biggest one last
  • 00:23:03
year was something like three and change
  • 00:23:06
on one day yeah that kind of looks dark
  • 00:23:08
for a little while you know but then it
  • 00:23:10
fixes itself yeah that's the risk in
  • 00:23:12
this in this particular trade yeah um
  • 00:23:15
but what you found over the course of
  • 00:23:16
last year even including the $3 move is
  • 00:23:19
that is that the majority of time it
  • 00:23:22
stays within um you know within a
  • 00:23:25
reasonable range so kind of is there is
  • 00:23:30
there a profit Target to close early or
  • 00:23:32
is it always just let it expire I just
  • 00:23:35
let it go because uh you know this uh to
  • 00:23:40
    close it if it's only
  • 00:23:42
$200 right in that strangle to
  • 00:23:46
leave 20 cents or 50 cents on the table
  • 00:23:49
is a big percentage of that right so I
  • 00:23:52
don't want to do that but I would say
  • 00:23:53
that the majority of times that you put
  • 00:23:56
out a position one of the sides is going
  • 00:23:58
    to be the the
  • 00:23:59
money is that true majority of the time
  • 00:24:02
is not in the money oh really okay
  • 00:24:05
that's because in those two days yeah I
  • 00:24:08
    got a dollar of
  • 00:24:10
cushion per day and and oil doesn't move
  • 00:24:14
that fast okay so you're saying the
  • 00:24:15
majority of days you don't have to do
  • 00:24:17
anything yeah I would say roughly we
  • 00:24:20
could count them but roughly a half a
  • 00:24:21
dozen days there were moves that were
  • 00:24:24
bigger than that where I was in the
  • 00:24:26
money and had to dis something that's
  • 00:24:28
seems like it's so such a small
  • 00:24:30
percentage that's that's kind of crazy
  • 00:24:33
um I wonder if that's like historically
  • 00:24:35
the way it's been or if it's just that
  • 00:24:36
way for the last you know year or so but
  • 00:24:38
either way okay so I'm the first one
  • 00:24:40
that would be very cautious about you
  • 00:24:43
know saying that just because oil
  • 00:24:45
behaved that way last year and the year
  • 00:24:48
before and even The Last 5 Years yeah
  • 00:24:50
    doesn't mean that's it's going to behave
  • 00:24:51
that way next year right we have to
  • 00:24:54
understand that risk so you have to be
  • 00:24:56
available at 1:30 every day I have to be
  • 00:24:59
available now right right so you've got
  • 00:25:01
your schedule so that at 1:30 when there
  • 00:25:03
is a uh when when the crude o market
  • 00:25:06
closes you you'll you have to flatten
  • 00:25:10
out that position yeah but most of the
  • 00:25:11
time I just have to look at it and say
  • 00:25:13
I'm within this I'm within the Str sure
  • 00:25:15
di them done but you have to flatten out
  • 00:25:16
the position if one size of the money
  • 00:25:18
yes and then when do you put the next
  • 00:25:19
trade on I'll put that next trade on
  • 00:25:22
usually I'm busy that afternoon and it
  • 00:25:24
closes at 5:00 is you know I keep
  • 00:25:26
talking Easter foure time okay and that
  • 00:25:29
it fight then that closes for an hour
  • 00:25:31
and then it opens again okay so usually
  • 00:25:33
    it's will
  • 00:25:34
be and when we put the trade back on the
  • 00:25:37
same rules go into effect yeah and you
  • 00:25:40
are very discipled so you've done it the
  • 00:25:42
you made that trade the entire year and
  • 00:25:45
every time I put the trade on I get to
  • 00:25:46
reset it of course yeah and so I
  • 00:25:49
    actually
  • 00:25:50
    hope that oil moves
  • 00:25:54
to almost touch my strangle right yeah
  • 00:25:59
that's good now I can reenter it and
  • 00:26:00
you'll be comfortable that yeah okay
  • 00:26:02
yeah you know not be caught in that
  • 00:26:06
Trend anybody think you're crazy with
  • 00:26:09
this yeah probably I mean does anybody
  • 00:26:12
else watch you or know what you're doing
  • 00:26:15
some friends of mine you know like the
  • 00:26:18
the friend dear friend that got me
  • 00:26:21
interested in tasty trade I in turn got
  • 00:26:23
him interested in options he was a
  • 00:26:25
    conservative guy that was dividend
  • 00:26:28
stocks yeah so I got them into options
  • 00:26:30
at least you starting off by you got
  • 00:26:32
    your positions you collecting dividends
  • 00:26:34
at least sell some calls okay so we
  • 00:26:36
started out that way then he went into
  • 00:26:38
the usual things he got me into tasty
  • 00:26:40
trade yeah and he and you so you talk to
  • 00:26:43
him about what's going on yeah and so so
  • 00:26:45
the first thing he said was what what
  • 00:26:46
you said I I said if you wanted to
  • 00:26:47
follow I said okay if you want I'll tell
  • 00:26:50
you each trade I make and you can follow
  • 00:26:52
along and maybe one sure into the game
  • 00:26:54
and then he quickly said you mean you
  • 00:26:55
got to check the position every Monday
  • 00:26:57
    Wednesday and Friday
  • 00:26:58
at 2:30 Eastern I said yes he said well
  • 00:27:01
I can't do that so yeah the way you're
  • 00:27:04
doing it yes that's correct do you ever
  • 00:27:06
    adjust the untested
  • 00:27:08
side so like if your calls are being
  • 00:27:10
tested do you ever move up the the side
  • 00:27:12
so interesting that you said that
  • 00:27:15
so on Monday I was holding
  • 00:27:19
    uh
  • 00:27:22
    75 and a
  • 00:27:24
    half
  • 00:27:27
    call excuse me
  • 00:27:29
put you're short to 7 that put yeah and
  • 00:27:32
and uh stock went below that yeah and so
  • 00:27:35
I had to roll yeah and I and it rolled
  • 00:27:37
into a pretty big Delta which my $1 rule
  • 00:27:40
good and as it happened I had to get up
  • 00:27:43
at 2:30 in the morning to make my flight
  • 00:27:46
here I to get the airport by 5:00 I
  • 00:27:48
Believe by house at 4: okay so I work
  • 00:27:51
backwards you know I didn't want to rush
  • 00:27:52
    I would have my
  • 00:27:53
coffee and it turns out that oil had
  • 00:27:56
    spiked
  • 00:27:59
and I got all everything back so okay
  • 00:28:02
I'm not going to take the risk while I'm
  • 00:28:03
riding the plane on you I'm just I'm
  • 00:28:05
going to close this now you know and
  • 00:28:07
reenter and so yes I do make adjustments
  • 00:28:09
like that but not typically that's
  • 00:28:11
    interesting see I'm I can't I I feel I'm
  • 00:28:17
almost like forced I I'm compelled to
  • 00:28:19
make those adjustments because you want
  • 00:28:21
to have uh ad is balanced yeah yeah yeah
  • 00:28:24
cuz I want to deal with it I mean that's
  • 00:28:25
the strategy yeah what what other little
  • 00:28:29
tidbits nuances with this strategy can
  • 00:28:32
you tell us is there anything else you
  • 00:28:34
know I just I just think one you know I
  • 00:28:36
I I said I looked at this range you know
  • 00:28:38
that's how I came up with the dollar and
  • 00:28:40
I like the fact that it comp it uh
  • 00:28:42
    compensates for volatility automatically
  • 00:28:45
so I don't have to think about delis it
  • 00:28:47
just that's already automatic yeah and I
  • 00:28:50
I think that you know when I look at the
  • 00:28:52
crude oil graph it reminds me of the
  • 00:28:54
statement that I think Charlie Munger
  • 00:28:57
said know who Charlie Monger is sure
  • 00:28:59
yeah okay I think we do him he said you
  • 00:29:01
know when when the markets hit a high
  • 00:29:05
things aren't as good as people think
  • 00:29:08
you know when the market hits a low
  • 00:29:10
things aren't as bad as people think
  • 00:29:12
either and so what I'm trying to say the
  • 00:29:14
other little Nuance is that oil curve
  • 00:29:16
    will turn
  • 00:29:18
around it's not going to go to $1,000 a
  • 00:29:21
barrel it's not going to go to zero
  • 00:29:24
although we saw that exception on Cas
  • 00:29:26
don't never say never we've seen weird
  • 00:29:28
exceptions but yeah yeah yeah we've seen
  • 00:29:31
some weird exceptions but I I I mean
  • 00:29:33
look look at the crued oil your you it
  • 00:29:35
turns around the chart is yeah we have
  • 00:29:38
seen some weird exceptions but you don't
  • 00:29:41
yeah I what difference does the chart
  • 00:29:42
make to you what difference does it make
  • 00:29:44
what you know no I want to have some
  • 00:29:46
guideline that $1 a day is a big move I
  • 00:29:50
know but you just want to know that
  • 00:29:51
something is maybe oversold or over but
  • 00:29:53
you don't you're not your strategy
  • 00:29:56
    doesn't has no technical
  • 00:29:58
    there's nothing fundamental about it
  • 00:29:59
    there's macro geopolitical about it
  • 00:30:02
nothing I thought once about devising
  • 00:30:05
the strategy I don't think at all about
  • 00:30:07
playing right there's a rule that I have
  • 00:30:09
and I just do it yeah because if you
  • 00:30:10
started to think about it you would be
  • 00:30:12
it would not work right CU then you
  • 00:30:15
would hold off on certain trades and you
  • 00:30:16
know you would make it yeah start second
  • 00:30:18
guessing yourself you know leveling down
  • 00:30:20
all all the mistakes that so you going
  • 00:30:22
to expand outside of oil I have to get
  • 00:30:25
    something that I'm really comfortable
  • 00:30:26
with I I I think my takeaways are that
  • 00:30:30
you know that that you found something
  • 00:30:34
that you feel is is tradable because
  • 00:30:40
it's range bound it's tradable because
  • 00:30:42
it's liquid and you've simplified it to
  • 00:30:46
to make the fewest amount of adjustments
  • 00:30:48
that you can and so far by staying small
  • 00:30:52
enough it's worth yeah yeah and it's fun
  • 00:30:56
