- 00:03:51questions uh and we don't want to do
- 00:03:53that this is an opportunity for you to
- 00:03:55start to build your network and which

- 00:04:03uh you've all probably have heard it
- 00:04:05matt's going to probably touch on it
- 00:04:06today if you want to get a job in sports
- 00:04:09kind of the first way to get that job is
- 00:04:11to start in ticket sales and then grow
- 00:04:12from there whether it would be within
- 00:04:14that field or another field um so this
- 00:04:16is going to be i think it's going to be
- 00:04:18a pretty popular program we're going to

- 00:04:40ask a question be the first let us know
- 00:04:41your name the school you would you
- 00:04:43attend and what your question is and
- 00:04:46we'll do our best to make that part of
- 00:04:47the program the goal is to get as many
- 00:04:48of those questions in today as possible
- 00:04:51so i don't have to talk the entire time
- 00:04:53so
- 00:04:54as always i want to make sure you get
- 00:04:56those questions and let us know where
- 00:04:57you're watching from
- 00:04:58so today as previously mentioned and as
- 00:05:00already seen our special guest today is
- 00:05:02matt mango he just finished up his third
- 00:05:05year with the tennessee titans uh and
- 00:05:07his second as the group sales manager
- 00:05:10in his role he and the group sales team
- 00:05:12specialize in creating unique group
- 00:05:14experiences at titans for low titans
- 00:05:17games for local corporations schools
- 00:05:19youth sport leagues and other
- 00:05:20organizations through different ticket
- 00:05:22and hospitality packages in 2012 he
- 00:05:25began his career in sports in minor
- 00:05:27league baseball another great way to get
- 00:05:29involved in sports with the trenton
- 00:05:31thunder the former double-a affiliate of
- 00:05:33the new york yankees worked his way up
- 00:05:35the ladder of the thunder group sales
- 00:05:37department before he joined the miami
- 00:05:38heat in the nba the group sales team
- 00:05:40becoming a top contributor in miami from
- 00:05:432015 to 2018. most recently before the
- 00:05:46titans he worked the orange bowl
- 00:05:48committee assisting their premium sales
- 00:05:51efforts of the 2018 college football
- 00:05:53playoff semifinal game before moving
- 00:05:55from miami to nashville to join the
- 00:05:57titans in 2019
- 00:05:59from new jersey graduated with a degree
- 00:06:01in sport management and communication
- 00:06:03from rutgers the state university of new
- 00:06:05jersey so everybody let's welcome our
- 00:06:07special guest today matt mango matt
- 00:06:09welcome
- 00:06:10awesome jake appreciate you having me
- 00:06:12there and kind of running through the
- 00:06:13background and uh kind of walking along
- 00:06:15my path there i think he covered it
- 00:06:17pretty well i know we'll kind of go a
- 00:06:18little more into what some of those
- 00:06:20roles exactly work on it throughout the
- 00:06:21uh throughout the talk here today so
- 00:06:24i'm ready to jump in some questions if
- 00:06:25you are awesome well we're going to
- 00:06:27start out i always joke but the the
- 00:06:29great thing about hosting this program
- 00:06:30is i always get to ask the first couple
- 00:06:32questions um talk a little bit about it
- 00:06:34in your bio there 10 000 foot view
- 00:06:36overview what does the day-to-day life
- 00:06:38with someone with your career look like
- 00:06:40yep so it is within the ticket sales
- 00:06:43realm uh when you dive a little deeper
- 00:06:45it's within the group sales realm you
- 00:06:46talk on some things there that's the
- 00:06:48creators you get unique experiences and
- 00:06:50different things to titans teams beyond
- 00:06:52just you know showing up but when the
- 00:06:53game starts sitting in this seat and
- 00:06:55then kind of leaving after it's over so
- 00:06:57um
- 00:06:58whether that be working with different
- 00:07:00youth sports leads to get them on the
- 00:07:01field after the game as a part of their
- 00:07:02ticket purchase or working with a local
- 00:07:05company to put on a big you know a
- 00:07:06pregame tailgate in one of our titan
- 00:07:08town areas uh before the game and our
- 00:07:11post-game school photos on the field
- 00:07:12with the purchase of their tickets so
- 00:07:14the day-to-day is ultimately everything
- 00:07:16throughout the year to build up to those
- 00:07:18experiences on game day and
- 00:07:19uh from the uh you know top down it's
- 00:07:22how do you go out throughout the year
- 00:07:23you mentioned earlier football season
- 00:07:25just wrapped up but really for us this
- 00:07:27is our style season right now this is
- 00:07:28about going out in the community
- 00:07:30building up those relationships getting
- 00:07:31in front of those people as community
- 00:07:32leaders whether it's companies schools
- 00:07:35sports lease churches you name it alumni
- 00:07:37associations we're trying to figure out
- 00:07:39okay if you guys are used to coming
- 00:07:41together
- 00:07:42you know typically outside of a titan's
- 00:07:44game how do we get that to happen inside
- 00:07:45of nissan stating the titans so
- 00:07:48calls emails text face-to-face meetings
- 00:07:50now virtual meeting is obviously a big
- 00:07:52part of the current day and age so
- 00:07:53really all about that relationship
- 00:07:55building the hustle the grind of meeting
- 00:07:56people and establishing building and
- 00:07:58maintaining relationships and
- 00:07:59representing titans
- 00:08:00so i'm going to be a little
- 00:08:02stereotypical here but when you're in
- 00:08:04college or when i was in college and you
- 00:08:05sit back and someone said says you need
- 00:08:07to go work in ticket sales i'm going to
- 00:08:08be honest
- 00:08:09not my cup of tea it's something i
- 00:08:11didn't want to do
- 00:08:13but i think there's a negative
- 00:08:14stereotype to when someone says that you
- 00:08:16think you're going to be sitting at a
- 00:08:17cubicle 40 hours 40 plus hours a week
- 00:08:20and you're never going to be off the
- 00:08:21phone you're just going to be calling
- 00:08:22people asking them to buy tickets
- 00:08:24interrupting their day and i think
- 00:08:26that's a negative stereotype that goes
- 00:08:28along with ticket sales so how did you
- 00:08:30overcome that negative stereotype and
- 00:08:32truly how different is it
- 00:08:35in your role
- 00:08:37you're not just on the phone the entire
- 00:08:38day correct and i'm glad you broke up i
- 00:08:40know earlier you said ticket sales being
- 00:08:42the the way to kind of break your foot
- 00:08:43in there kind of create your foot in the
- 00:08:44door and sports industry but uh really
- 00:08:46it's that's how we look for the titans
- 00:08:48we always want to get people there who
- 00:08:50were into sales and uh like you said
- 00:08:51kind of getting out in college you don't
- 00:08:53think hey i want to be in sales when i
- 00:08:54grow up but just not not what you think
- 00:08:56of as a kid talking about sports but uh
- 00:08:58the more you kind of dive into it the
- 00:08:59more you get the experience it really
- 00:09:00comes down to
- 00:09:02for me personally it was like all right
- 00:09:03learning my skill sets
- 00:09:05what am i good at what do i like to do
- 00:09:07every day that's connecting with people
- 00:09:08let's build those relationships and you
- 00:09:10start to realize how well that
- 00:09:11translates into the sales world uh and
- 00:09:14that's
- 00:09:15you know with your outbound with your
- 00:09:16clients with your peers with your uh
- 00:09:18your leadership teams with kind of your
- 00:09:20employees right there and um you kind of
- 00:09:22realize it is more than just cold
- 00:09:24calling up the yellow pages every day
- 00:09:25and just dialing up and hammering out
- 00:09:26100 phone calls a day sure when you get
- 00:09:28started whether it's the mining baseball
- 00:09:30days or inside sales programs
- 00:09:32don't get me wrong there's a lot of that
- 00:09:34but
- 00:09:34kind of knowing what your your end game
- 00:09:36is where do you want to be in five 10 15
- 00:09:3920 years and kind of knowing that's part
- 00:09:41of the process of buying into it there
- 00:09:42and using it as learning experiences
- 00:09:44putting yourself outside of that comfort
- 00:09:45zone and um it turns into more than just
- 00:09:48the cold calls the call center type vibe
- 00:09:50it's it's game days it's working with
- 00:09:52fan it's seeing people excited after big
- 00:09:54wins after tough losses kind of the the
- 00:09:57highs the lows it all comes through all
- 00:09:58fours in there you know and you touched
- 00:10:00a lot on some of the different things
- 00:10:02you're like you said you're not just
- 00:10:03cold calling you know in your bio you
- 00:10:05all the different local organizations
- 00:10:07and you're truly working with the
- 00:10:08community there in nashville so on that
- 00:10:11part of your job you know what is so
- 00:10:13great and so powerful about working with
- 00:10:15those local organizations and at the end
- 00:10:18of the day
- 00:10:19getting to see these really cool moments
- 00:10:21once the lifetime moments for kids or
- 00:10:23youth groups or youth football teams
- 00:10:25when they're at these games in the fall
- 00:10:28yeah no exactly and you know fortunate
- 00:10:30enough to work for the nfl team like the
- 00:10:32titans in a great city like nashville to
- 00:10:34where you know it's the south it's it's
- 00:10:36football territory down here we have a
- 00:10:37great team uh great ownership great
- 00:10:39coaches superstar players now i got here
- 00:10:42in 2019 so
- 00:10:43i'd like to kind of joke to some of my
- 00:10:45colleagues who were here you know back
- 00:10:46in the 2013 14s and those earlier days
- 00:10:49where things weren't going so well on
- 00:10:51the field but doing what we do off the
- 00:10:53field our job is to control the
- 00:10:54controllables so that's using that brand
- 00:10:57that identity who are we as an
- 00:10:58organization as a community partner to
- 00:11:00build that trust in the people so that
- 00:11:02when we reach out to them they know
- 00:11:04we're not just calling because derek
- 00:11:05henry's rushed for another 200 yards so
- 00:11:06we're calling because they're used to us
- 00:11:08calling for years and years and uh you
- 00:11:10know we bring value to their
- 00:11:11organization their family their friends
- 00:11:13and help create the experience where
- 00:11:15they keep coming back to the highs the
- 00:11:17lows sure we might get a little bit more
- 00:11:18of an earphone when things aren't going
- 00:11:19great but they're still there for for
- 00:11:21better for worse during the uh the runs
- 00:11:23there and it's that's what it's all
- 00:11:25about really kind of making sure that
- 00:11:26we're there for the fans and do what we
- 00:11:28can obviously uh you can't see my height
- 00:11:30right now i'm about five foot nine so i
- 00:11:31can't control too much on the field
- 00:11:33uh you know you look at your job and you
- 00:11:35know you've probably heard the cliche
- 00:11:36saying you know you never work a day in
- 00:11:38your life if you truly love what you do
- 00:11:40um so why do you love going whether it's
- 00:11:42you know past couple years just doing a
- 00:11:44lot of working from home uh but why do
- 00:11:46you love going in the office every day
- 00:11:48talking to all these different
- 00:11:49organizations showing up on game day why
- 00:11:51do you love your job in sales with the
- 00:11:53titans
- 00:11:54yep
- 00:11:55so you know game day is the the front
- 00:11:57center stage so
- 00:11:59nfl is only 10 home games per year so
- 00:12:02355 other days to where you're not
- 00:12:04hosting that home game um but all the
- 00:12:06work you do throughout those days the
- 00:12:07holidays the long nights the weekends
- 00:12:09the early mornings
- 00:12:10everything within it you mentioned it's
- 00:12:12it's definitely a lot that goes into it
- 00:12:14uh and you really got to have that
- 00:12:15passion you got to love what you're
- 00:12:16doing otherwise the sports industry is
- 00:12:18definitely getting started and staying
- 00:12:19in it it can be a grind so if you're not
- 00:12:21into it if you're not to do it we love
- 00:12:22every day you're going to burn yourself
- 00:12:24out so um
- 00:12:25finding that passion what is it that
- 00:12:27matters to you were you like day in day
- 00:12:28out and you mentioned earlier
- 00:12:30with the fans and i related to it before
- 00:12:32just
- 00:12:33coming to work every day with with
- 00:12:34people who you know kind of have your
- 00:12:36back and finding that that organization
- 00:12:38that kind of fits you best in um all
- 00:12:40being on the same page the the you know
- 00:12:42the one team one during teamwork the
- 00:12:43dreamwork all those cliche sayings right
- 00:12:45there uh the people around you is really
- 00:12:48what makes the job what it is and makes
- 00:12:50those long tolerable hours don't seem as
- 00:12:52long and intolerable
- 00:12:53you know you spend more time with the
- 00:12:55people you might sit next than you do
- 00:12:56with your your family and your friends
- 00:12:57because this is the crazy sports role we
- 00:12:59all signed up for the reason we all love
- 00:13:01it uh the former athlete the
- 00:13:02competitiveness of it it's just uh it's
- 00:13:04unlike any other industry really
- 00:13:06i couldn't agree couldn't agree with you
- 00:13:08more there for sure um i'm gonna send it
- 00:13:10out to nathan nathan's got some
- 00:13:11questions he won't ask i don't think we
- 00:13:13have any in our youtube comments now the
- 00:13:14live chat is filled up would have to be
- 00:13:16a bunch of co-workers or or friends or
- 00:13:18colleagues because there's a lot of
- 00:13:20great comments coming in don't think we
- 00:13:22have any questions but i want to send it
- 00:13:23out to nathan
- 00:13:24i think you know he's got some he's got
- 00:13:26some questions he wants to ask
- 00:13:28yeah matt thanks again for being a part
- 00:13:30of the program and like jake was saying
- 00:13:32uh monitoring this chat over here we
- 00:13:34don't have any student questions so
- 00:13:36please submit questions whether you're a
- 00:13:38student you're a young professional just
- 00:13:40let's dive into matt's career a little
- 00:13:42bit more based on the audience questions
- 00:13:44as opposed to me or jake but i do have
- 00:13:46to say i think you're getting more love
- 00:13:48in the chat than probably any other
- 00:13:49guest we've ever had so you're doing
- 00:13:51something right i'm a little worried
- 00:13:53where those comments might say yeah
- 00:13:55you can go back after the fact and take
- 00:13:56a look but
- 00:13:58um
- 00:13:58i want to ask you and you know we're the
- 00:14:00pro football hall of fame you work for
- 00:14:01the tennessee titans that's football
- 00:14:03jake always says we're unapologetically
- 00:14:05football here um but looking at your bio
- 00:14:07and your background and kind of studying
- 00:14:09your linkedin and what you've done
- 00:14:11uh it's close to baseball season here
- 00:14:14and i see that you started in the minor
- 00:14:15league baseball world um can you maybe
- 00:14:18speak to the students that are watching
- 00:14:19now or may watch this in the future and
- 00:14:22just kind of talk about that rich
- 00:14:23experience you got working in minor
- 00:14:25league baseball all the different
- 00:14:27opportunities that were presented to you
- 00:14:28there and how that kind of was a you
- 00:14:30know launch pad for what you're doing
- 00:14:32now in your career yeah i'm glad you
- 00:14:34asked because uh the marley baseball
- 00:14:36start is unlike any other uh working in
- 00:14:38sports so again looking at my career
- 00:14:41press starting rightly baseball then mba
- 00:14:42to nfl it's funny to kind of look back
- 00:14:44on some of the things i did oh geez 10
- 00:14:47years ago now working starting baseball
- 00:14:48nine years ago so um it all started kind
- 00:14:51of pretty full circle there uh senior
- 00:14:53year at rutgers university uh the state
- 00:14:55university of new jersey for the fans
- 00:14:56out there we uh part of our as a sports
- 00:15:00management major part of our requirement
- 00:15:01was to get internship within the field
- 00:15:03um with for graduations you need your
- 00:15:05whatever six nine credit internship in
- 00:15:07order within the field to get that
- 00:15:08sports management degree um so luckily
- 00:15:10enough rutgers was about 45 50 minutes
- 00:15:13from trenton new jersey
- 00:15:14which was then the home of the double a
- 00:15:16uh you know yankee team at the time so i
- 00:15:18had a friend there who had interned
- 00:15:20there the previous summer had all good
- 00:15:22things to say about you know what it
- 00:15:24looked like you know
- 00:15:25again crazy wearing many hats an hour
- 00:15:27things like that but um knew that was
- 00:15:30the right place to try to try to go for
- 00:15:31and get that start so um luckily landed
- 00:15:34that first internship there with the
- 00:15:36thunder and
- 00:15:37i'm sure like many many of the students
- 00:15:39here on this call i didn't know what i
- 00:15:41wanted to do i didn't know i wanted to
- 00:15:42be in ticket sales or sales or really
- 00:15:44anything i just do i kept saying i want
- 00:15:45to work in sports when i can grow up so
- 00:15:47it's uh i'm four months in graduation
- 00:15:49and it's about to be time to grow up and
- 00:15:50i still don't know what working in
- 00:15:51sports means so um
- 00:15:53a full rotational internship to where
- 00:15:55every two three weeks you work with the
- 00:15:57different departments so it's tickets
- 00:15:59out of sponsorship setups marketing
- 00:16:00broadcasting pr
- 00:16:02stadium operations everything within a
- 00:16:04any sports that you would think of the
- 00:16:06titans the heat anywhere in between
- 00:16:08you do it just on a smaller scale in
- 00:16:10minor league baseball um and being
- 00:16:12moderately baseball as well as your
- 00:16:13resources are a bit more limited so
- 00:16:15there's not as many carved out
- 00:16:16specialists so you while you might have
- 00:16:17one title of group sales representatives
- 00:16:20you're also the one who's gonna go out
- 00:16:21and set up signs on game days and the
- 00:16:23full team is out there pulling the tarps
- 00:16:25when it's raining pulling them back off
- 00:16:26pulling back on rain delays uh taking
- 00:16:28part in the in between innings
- 00:16:30promotions you're racing against the hot
- 00:16:32dog mascot or whatever that thing might
- 00:16:34be that night um i can go through and
- 00:16:36probably name 40 different game day
- 00:16:38duties i might have done anywhere from
- 00:16:39being the head janitor on game days to
- 00:16:42um sitting back in the outfield
- 00:16:44replacing the manual numbers in the
- 00:16:45scoreboard
- 00:16:46through a 15-inning game so like it just
- 00:16:49humbles you you know and ultimately
- 00:16:51you're there to learn you get that
- 00:16:52experience and then it gives you the
- 00:16:53chance to kind of find what you do like
- 00:16:56and for me it happened to be the the
- 00:16:58sales the group sales kind of world
- 00:16:59right there so
- 00:17:01leading from their internship into is
- 00:17:02offering a full-time role within that
- 00:17:03group sales entry-level role uh and that
- 00:17:06jake related to earlier a lot of that
- 00:17:08100 calls a day while supporting the
- 00:17:10sales efforts of the group style staff
- 00:17:12and learning from them and the
- 00:17:13leadership there
- 00:17:14and then one step to another got to work
- 00:17:16away kind of through that that group
- 00:17:18sales department at the thunder
- 00:17:20and again no matter whether your
- 00:17:21internship or group sales manager there
- 00:17:23you're still doing every and anything
- 00:17:25for crazy hours and uh we'll just say
- 00:17:27not not too much return on investment on
- 00:17:29those hours when it comes to the
- 00:17:30finances but it's it's all part of it
- 00:17:31and wouldn't trade it uh for the world
- 00:17:34and
- 00:17:35kind of going back to the uh i'm sure
- 00:17:36the natural question of the product how
- 00:17:38do you sell minor league baseball
- 00:17:39there's
- 00:17:4070 something home games a year versus
- 00:17:42the nfl um it kind of established that
- 00:17:44creativity within you and um relating
- 00:17:46back to building relationships
- 00:17:48creating more stuff that's not about
- 00:17:50what's happening on the field nobody
- 00:17:51goes to a game and trying on tuesday
- 00:17:52night to see the prospects of the
- 00:17:54yankees you know um so if that helped
- 00:17:56answer your question in a long-winded
- 00:17:58walk through my four years with trenton
- 00:17:59there
- 00:18:00oh yeah i think you did a great job
- 00:18:02explaining uh i guess the stuff you were
- 00:18:05doing that helped you become a better
- 00:18:06salesman now but also just you know you
- 00:18:09said you might be head janitor you're
- 00:18:11flipping you know the numbers on the
- 00:18:12scoreboard those are things you're not
- 00:18:13really doing now with the titans but uh
- 00:18:16it humbles you it makes you um
- 00:18:18really decide what you want to do and if
- 00:18:20you want to be in the sports industry so
- 00:18:22i think it's a great uh starting point
- 00:18:24for anybody that's interested in getting
- 00:18:26the sports industry um we've got some
- 00:18:28questions coming in now uh but i'm
- 00:18:30actually going to go to questions we
- 00:18:32have coming in from an elementary class
- 00:18:34normally this is college students high
- 00:18:35school students that are watching this
- 00:18:37but um one of our elementary classes
- 00:18:39this is from emilia at creland
- 00:18:41elementary she wants to know how many
- 00:18:43tickets do you sell per season
- 00:18:46and then one of her classmates uh jada
- 00:18:49says what's the next step for you
- 00:18:51you know group sales right now what's
- 00:18:53the next step for you and your career so
- 00:18:54how many tickets and then the next step
- 00:18:56for you yep so that how many tickets won
- 00:18:58i'll answer kind of collectively as a
- 00:19:00team as the titans there so our stadium
- 00:19:02holds around 69 000 and change uh people
- 00:19:05within the game so 10 home games for a
- 00:19:06year do the math there that's about 700
- 00:19:09000 uh you know tickets or people coming
- 00:19:11through nissan stadium um you know
- 00:19:13talking full sellouts per game uh
- 00:19:15breaking it down a little more our
- 00:19:17season ticket member base is you know
- 00:19:19probably not 53 to 55 000. hopefully the
- 00:19:21comments don't correct me if i'm too off
- 00:19:23there but it's around there uh and then
- 00:19:25within that remaining whatever might be
- 00:19:2715 14 000 tickets there uh it's on the
- 00:19:30the sales team so the service team is
- 00:19:32the one who make sure those 53 000 55
- 00:19:34000 gets in every year coming back
- 00:19:37and then it's awesome to sellers okay
- 00:19:39here's how many not empty but unclaimed
- 00:19:41seats that we kind of have per year what
- 00:19:43are we doing to fill those and that's
- 00:19:45our season ticket services i mean i've
- 00:19:46seen to get sales team and i'm selling
- 00:19:48the the psl the seat licenses to get new
- 00:19:50season ticket members in the house or if
- 00:19:52it's
- 00:19:53it's one of our various smaller partial
- 00:19:55plans to let's maybe something that's
- 00:19:56more appealing towards that that younger
- 00:19:57fans where they don't want to do the
- 00:19:59full 10 games they want the three to
- 00:20:00five for how many games that might be to
- 00:20:02help fill it up but then um once you get
- 00:20:04down to what's left of that about
- 00:20:06probably 7 000 or so that's where it
- 00:20:08kind of falls more into to my specific
- 00:20:10role in our specific team and department
- 00:20:11there with the group sales team
- 00:20:13and that's pretty much like all right
- 00:20:14here's what's left go sell it out uh and
- 00:20:16that's where we start there so the uh
- 00:20:19the the little breakdown for you nissan
- 00:20:20saying how it works and that's what
- 00:20:21we're talking about getting all those
- 00:20:22sports leagues and schools and
- 00:20:23everything kind of filling in that group
- 00:20:25sales kind of programs there um and then
- 00:20:27the second question on that one was that
- 00:20:29sorry yes so i think you did a great job
- 00:20:30kind of explaining the breakdown from
- 00:20:32you know season tickets and group sales
- 00:20:34and what you're doing but second
- 00:20:36question there was from jada and she
- 00:20:37said you know what's the next step for
- 00:20:39you where are you looking you know your
- 00:20:41quote-unquote five-year plan your
- 00:20:4210-year plan as far as your career goes
- 00:20:45and ticket sales
- 00:20:46yes certainly so uh you know if they've
- 00:20:48been in your group so it's pretty much
- 00:20:50my entire career path ever since kind of
- 00:20:51coming out of trenton and i'm on a let's
- 00:20:53say a pretty good path of where i'm at
- 00:20:55right now to keep working myself up uh
- 00:20:56within this sales world of this group
- 00:20:58sales world and ultimately the business
- 00:20:59side of sports so um we like to a few of
- 00:21:02us leadership within the titans always
- 00:21:03like to say you know kind of have your
- 00:21:04eye on the prize in the next five years
- 00:21:06but at the same time you always want to
- 00:21:07be the best at what you're doing right
- 00:21:09now and recognizing
- 00:21:10where you have the room to grow uh where
- 00:21:12your
- 00:21:13weaknesses are and not being afraid to
- 00:21:15admit it to make sure you're the best
- 00:21:16group sales manager for the titans at
- 00:21:18that time uh because if you can't do the
- 00:21:20role you're now to the fullest your
- 00:21:22capabilities just to say that you're
- 00:21:23ready for that that next step right
- 00:21:25there so whatever title that might be
- 00:21:27the next whatever director senior
- 00:21:29director vice president all those things
- 00:21:30kind of go off the ladder um i do think
- 00:21:33that
- 00:21:33the the skill set and the resources kind
- 00:21:35of being provided within the current uh
- 00:21:37team experiences right now is
- 00:21:39putting in a good spot to keep working
- 00:21:41through there uh being the end of the
- 00:21:42day being at that top of that sports
- 00:21:44organization on that business side um
- 00:21:46will be the answer
- 00:21:47yeah for sure well it's good to hear
- 00:21:49that you got a plan and i love how you
- 00:21:51emphasize so
- 00:21:53um making sure that you don't get so
- 00:21:56caught up in where you want to go that
- 00:21:58you forget where you're at right now and
- 00:21:59being the best version of yourself and
- 00:22:01position that you have currently that's
- 00:22:03important i think for our students to
- 00:22:04hear because a lot of times you have
- 00:22:06that dream job
- 00:22:08and you're not going to get that right
- 00:22:10out of college you know right out of
- 00:22:11high school you're going to have to work
- 00:22:12and kind of climb the ladder a little
- 00:22:14bit and you got to make sure that you're
- 00:22:15putting your best foot forward with each
- 00:22:17of those positions along the way so
- 00:22:19that's a great piece of advice i'm going
- 00:22:20to send it over to jake for some more
- 00:22:23questions right now but continue
- 00:22:25everyone that's watching continues to
- 00:22:26make questions i got something i'm gonna
- 00:22:28look through here now but for now it's
- 00:22:30back to jake
- 00:22:31awesome thanks nathan yes uh matt and
- 00:22:33you know you've talked about your career
- 00:22:34so far and everything that you've seen
- 00:22:37and how you've changed from baseball to
- 00:22:38basketball the football and we know
- 00:22:41sports is an ever evolving
- 00:22:43uh
- 00:22:45organization
- 00:22:46thing that we're going to see continue
- 00:22:48to change down the road
- 00:22:50but what we like to do here at the pro
- 00:22:52football hall of fame is show well what
- 00:22:54was it like before we see it it today so
- 00:22:57we thought what better way to show maybe
- 00:22:59how the ticket game has changed and go
- 00:23:01straight live to our museum and talk a
- 00:23:03little bit about well what was it like
- 00:23:05to go to a game when football started so
- 00:23:08what i'm going to do is i'm going to
- 00:23:09throw it out to the director of our
- 00:23:10youth and education team here at the
- 00:23:11hall of fame jerry shockey who's in
- 00:23:13front of some of our oldest artifacts
- 00:23:15and all this information that we have
- 00:23:17here at the pro football hall of fame
- 00:23:19all around what matt loves to do every
- 00:23:21single day tickets so jerry go ahead and
- 00:23:22take it away
- 00:23:24thank you jake uh matt thank you for uh
- 00:23:26connecting in with all of our uh
- 00:23:28students connecting it all across the
- 00:23:29country over uh youtube live and and
- 00:23:31it's a little crazy in here actually so
- 00:23:33i had people walking in front just a
- 00:23:34second ago so this is a good thing no
- 00:23:36that's the beautiful thing for us here
- 00:23:38at the pro football fan but i want to
- 00:23:39welcome you guys to the second floor of
- 00:23:41our rotunda here at the pro football
- 00:23:43fame it is here that we highlight the
- 00:23:45over 100 years of history of
- 00:23:47professional football
- 00:23:48the first floor goes more
- 00:23:49chronologically and goes by decade but
- 00:23:52up here on the second floor it's more
- 00:23:54and more let's find moments uh fantastic
- 00:23:56finishes dynasties where we are today
- 00:23:58the pioneers of the game uh this space
- 00:24:01spends a lot of time honoring the
- 00:24:03greatness of men like ernie nevers
- 00:24:05red grange um neither of these men
- 00:24:08played for the for the tennessee titans
- 00:24:10but they were a huge box office draw
- 00:24:12when it came to selling tickets
- 00:24:14both the chicago bears louis vazquez
- 00:24:16went on a barnstorming tour after the
- 00:24:18regular season to make more money and
- 00:24:20let fans all across the country see
- 00:24:21their stars play
- 00:24:22i'm actually next to a photo the
- 00:24:24promotional piece used to sell the
- 00:24:26tickets you can see there and if you can
- 00:24:28imagine i don't know if you guys can
- 00:24:30quite see that but i think ticket price
- 00:24:32has changed a little bit uh we see
- 00:24:3510 games for 20 dollars that'd be a
- 00:24:36special promo for the titans stopping
- 00:24:38that right now 10 games for 20 so uh
- 00:24:42and then now the way people like matt
- 00:24:44sell tickets and definitely the cost of
- 00:24:45tickets has definitely changed but
- 00:24:47matt i was just curious with your
- 00:24:48experience now uh how you see the field
- 00:24:51changing in the future with ticket sales
- 00:24:53and things like that
- 00:24:56yeah no absolutely that's a good
- 00:24:57question unfortunately no more uh 10 10
- 00:25:00games for 20 bucks you know what we do
- 00:25:01have some more affordable options versus
- 00:25:03what people might think but uh not quite
- 00:25:05there anymore so
- 00:25:06our fans probably wish that came back to
- 00:25:08our sales reps probably don't want those
- 00:25:10prices to come back
- 00:25:11but uh to your question there in terms
- 00:25:13of how the the sports experience the
- 00:25:15ticketing has growth has changed um
- 00:25:18a number of ways like you talk about the
- 00:25:20tech pieces when it comes down to
- 00:25:22in the old times you just walk up to the
- 00:25:23box office you buy your paper ticket you
- 00:25:25walk right in um
- 00:25:27and now you guys all know anytime you go
- 00:25:29to any event everything's technical it's
- 00:25:30mobile it's on your phone it's uh
- 00:25:32digital tickets mobile tickets whatever
- 00:25:33kind of following that might be so
- 00:25:34that's the obvious one but not as much
- 00:25:35in terms of what i do and how i look at
- 00:25:38it in terms of how she's my day to day
- 00:25:40um and from my perspective i would say
- 00:25:43going to a sports game going back to
- 00:25:45what if the group styles things it's
- 00:25:46it's becoming less and less about what's
- 00:25:49happening only on the field from your
- 00:25:50seat uh sports games people want to go
- 00:25:52to them because it's a social event it's
- 00:25:55a spectacle it's about being the who's
- 00:25:56who who's at which games the big games
- 00:25:58you want to be a part of that so
- 00:26:00what are we doing to make our in-game
- 00:26:02experience our fan experiences even
- 00:26:04better than just again just relying on a
- 00:26:06big win to get them excited so whether
- 00:26:08that's
- 00:26:10getting to the game and engaging with
- 00:26:11fans through different promotions or if
- 00:26:13it's um you know the different areas we
- 00:26:15have the hospitality areas pre-game a
- 00:26:17spot for them to socialize with their
- 00:26:19friends and um you know have a couple of
- 00:26:21drinks for a couple hours before the
- 00:26:22game and then even during game you know
- 00:26:24what can we do to provide more areas
- 00:26:25where it's you're not just locked into
- 00:26:27your seat with two people next to you
- 00:26:28it's where can you go in the stadium to
- 00:26:30watch the game while having some food
- 00:26:32some drinks and you know you might look
- 00:26:33at the field you might be watching on tv
- 00:26:34when the fields see your back somewhat
- 00:26:36but that's what the people are kind of
- 00:26:37gearing towards the sports world overall
- 00:26:38it's that social experience what's
- 00:26:40happening there and how do we keep
- 00:26:42altering
- 00:26:43our products what we can do to
- 00:26:45again adjust to those times and make
- 00:26:47sure that we're not just
- 00:26:48wishing everyone to show up every sunday
- 00:26:5070 000 fans show up on time sitting
- 00:26:52there seats and nothing else so if
- 00:26:53that's bringing
- 00:26:54local vendors to you know the taste of
- 00:26:56the town type of things we've done that
- 00:26:58in the past couple years everyone's
- 00:26:59favorite restaurants we're getting them
- 00:27:00inside of the stadium because those are
- 00:27:01the foods they're custom they might not
- 00:27:03want just
- 00:27:04the hot dog the popcorn in the soda they
- 00:27:06might want the martin's barbecue or the
- 00:27:07um you know this local pizza restaurant
- 00:27:10um any of the slimming huskies
- 00:27:12those kind of some things there i would
- 00:27:14say um just making it more special more
- 00:27:16unique and then another kind of like
- 00:27:18whether it's having a cool photo
- 00:27:20backdrop for people to take their their
- 00:27:22titans photos and signature things like
- 00:27:23that or um providing you know different
- 00:27:26in-game music or bigger half-time acts
- 00:27:29whatever it can be again to kind of tie
- 00:27:30it all in to make it as much about
- 00:27:33the full experience and not as much
- 00:27:34about football the whole time
- 00:27:38well thank you matt i appreciate it uh
- 00:27:40jake i'm gonna send it back to you
- 00:27:42awesome thanks jerry thanks for giving
- 00:27:43us an inside look there at the hall of
- 00:27:45fame you know matt you mentioned uh some
- 00:27:47nashville some local foods you know
- 00:27:49we've been down there nath and i have
- 00:27:50been down there martin's barbecue might
- 00:27:52be one of our favorite places we've been
- 00:27:53to the entire country one of the best uh
- 00:27:56so i just wanted to throw that give it a
- 00:27:57little plug uh in there and you you
- 00:27:59mentioned there
- 00:28:01how the the ticket sales have changed
- 00:28:03from you know your your stub that you
- 00:28:04put in a jar and you collected or you
- 00:28:06put up on your wall to now everything's
- 00:28:08on your phone and all digital and you
- 00:28:09know i'm going to ask this question now
- 00:28:12i'm going to kind of get into the nft
- 00:28:14space now i can guarantee you i have
- 00:28:16hardly any knowledge on it and what it
- 00:28:18means but you see some of these you know
- 00:28:21these digital tickets becoming like like
- 00:28:23a token or something you can keep that's
- 00:28:25one of one
- 00:28:26how has somebody
- 00:28:28who works on are going to end up trying
- 00:28:30to sell these how do you take advantage
- 00:28:32of the advancement of technology and new
- 00:28:34things like nfts to help you on your
- 00:28:37day-to-day you know your day-to-day life
- 00:28:40yeah no certainly and that's a big part
- 00:28:41of it whether it's nfts or other just
- 00:28:43advancements in the detective world so
- 00:28:46uh we are actually one of the i don't
- 00:28:47want to say we're the only one a few
- 00:28:48teams who during our uh playoff games
- 00:28:50last year we actually kind of offered
- 00:28:53some nfts as a special purchase with a
- 00:28:55ticket after the exact number of it so
- 00:28:56uh we were one of the first teams to
- 00:28:58kind of start dabbling in the nft game
- 00:29:00with their ticket um i wasn't too
- 00:29:02hands-on directly involved with that so
- 00:29:04i don't want to sit here and uh you know
- 00:29:06talk about how it worked what it looked
- 00:29:07like and all that but uh certainly
- 00:29:09organizationally whether it's in ticket
- 00:29:11sales partnerships our creative teams
- 00:29:13marketing anything like that we're we're
- 00:29:15keeping an eye on local trends uh local
- 00:29:17national worldwide uh and knowing that
- 00:29:19we can't just do things the same old way
- 00:29:20and that could speak to our social media
- 00:29:22teams and i'm sure at one point it was
- 00:29:24no social media and just facebook and
- 00:29:25then just twitter and then instagram and
- 00:29:27uh as we see those shifts to where what
- 00:29:29youtube and tick tock are probably two
- 00:29:31of the more used ones now nationwide and
- 00:29:33i'm sure the students on this caller
- 00:29:34that's probably speaking more of their
- 00:29:35language um so knowing that across every
- 00:29:38single department you gotta recognize
- 00:29:40where where trends are going
- 00:29:41technologically and uh not fighting them
- 00:29:43embracing them and the sooner you do
- 00:29:45that the more kind of ahead you're gonna
- 00:29:46be and from the ticket style side of
- 00:29:48things
- 00:29:49we're seeing more tickets than ever
- 00:29:51being purchased online we you know our
- 00:29:52box office used to always be open for
- 00:29:54whatever hours and now it's much more
- 00:29:55limited hours sometimes not even open at
- 00:29:57all knowing people are buying online or
- 00:29:58over the phone or in person um by going
- 00:30:01to them uh so what ticket tools are out
- 00:30:03there for me from the group side of
- 00:30:04things to
- 00:30:05create the let's say less friction as
- 00:30:07possible in the purchasing process to
- 00:30:09make an easy user experience everyone
- 00:30:11needs to shop it online now so why would
- 00:30:12tickets really be any different uh but
- 00:30:14it's not as simple as just clicking a
- 00:30:16little send like it still comes back to
- 00:30:18we're talking earlier those the hustle
- 00:30:19the ground and then meeting the people
- 00:30:21the relationships and then the mobile
- 00:30:22tickets kind of the end piece of it
- 00:30:26i think you know it's a space that like
- 00:30:28i said i have zero clue about i might
- 00:30:30even be too old to be out of that that
- 00:30:33that frame right now but i think it's
- 00:30:35really cool and unique and opens up so
- 00:30:37many doors uh down the road uh nathan
- 00:30:40sent me a message here he's got a bunch
- 00:30:41of good questions that have rolled in so
- 00:30:43students thank you for getting those
- 00:30:44questions in so i'm gonna throw it over
- 00:30:46to him for some of our questions from
- 00:30:47the students tune in today yeah jake
- 00:30:50thank you so much and and students thank
- 00:30:52you for submitting some questions i know
- 00:30:54matt's excited to answer these so we'll
- 00:30:56just get right to it this is from connor
- 00:30:58a student from the university of alabama
- 00:31:00and connor's curious in your opinion
- 00:31:02matt what's the best way to get your
- 00:31:04foot in the door in the sports industry
- 00:31:06um suggestions that he could use to
- 00:31:09prepare for you know a job interview or
- 00:31:11just working in the industry uh in
- 00:31:13general
- 00:31:14yeah i think we might have started with
- 00:31:16the starlight college you kind of
- 00:31:17referenced it earlier with the the
- 00:31:19networking they're you know getting out
- 00:31:20there meeting people within the field so
- 00:31:22uh to break that down even further uh
- 00:31:24the best thing that you can do is
- 00:31:26connect with as many individuals that
- 00:31:28you can uh in anything that you think
- 00:31:30you might be interested in as a college
- 00:31:31student i understand you might not know
- 00:31:32the exact field so be curious you know
- 00:31:35go on linkedin look for people within
- 00:31:37different roles of sports organizations
- 00:31:38that you might want to get into at all
- 00:31:40levels whether that's somebody who's an
- 00:31:42intern in that role so a little more
- 00:31:43relatable somebody might be that entry
- 00:31:45level somebody in that middle management
- 00:31:46leadership level uh and just learning
- 00:31:48more about what it is that they do day
- 00:31:50in and day out uh connecting with them
- 00:31:52and going in with you know lists of
- 00:31:53questions there so linkedin great tool
- 00:31:56for that everyone's you know for the
- 00:31:57most part title is right in their their
- 00:31:58name their bio so it's pretty uh easy to
- 00:32:01find what they do and you know go by
- 00:32:02sports team go on their website find
- 00:32:04their their title and dive in from there
- 00:32:06and then once you do make that that
- 00:32:08initial ask whether it's a linkedin
- 00:32:09message an email phone call whatever it
- 00:32:11might be
- 00:32:12once you if you do take that time to set
- 00:32:14aside for that person to talk to them
- 00:32:16learn
- 00:32:16go in there with an intention you know
- 00:32:18there's a
- 00:32:20you'll have someone in my role might
- 00:32:21have a number of people reaching out per
- 00:32:23week and you see the difference people
- 00:32:24who truly want to know what it is that
- 00:32:26you do and learn from you and people are
- 00:32:28trying to to kind of check the box so go
- 00:32:30in with your questions take advantage of
- 00:32:31that time once you get that person on
- 00:32:33the phone they're not going to hang up
- 00:32:34on you for 10 minutes if you have
- 00:32:35questions coming most people are going
- 00:32:37to be people about it and look be there
- 00:32:39to help you
- 00:32:40so just prepare for anything like that
- 00:32:41within those connections and then
- 00:32:43once you find it is what you do and you
- 00:32:45have a good conversation maintaining
- 00:32:46those relationships send them that
- 00:32:47linkedin request check in once in a
- 00:32:49while if it's a good win like that how's
- 00:32:51things going whatever it might be
- 00:32:54a lot of this industry is not only you
- 00:32:56know established making relationships
- 00:32:58but it's maintaining them growing them
- 00:32:59and keeping in touch with them and
- 00:33:01this industry
- 00:33:02might be biased but maybe more so than
- 00:33:04others is all about
- 00:33:05who you know and who knows you uh from
- 00:33:08that angle right there it's uh jake
- 00:33:10before we even went live i took a look
- 00:33:12through my bio and um he saw a
- 00:33:13familiarity in terms of somebody he knew
- 00:33:15that worked somewhere else and sure
- 00:33:17enough one of my good friends from you
- 00:33:18know seven years ago we had a mutual
- 00:33:20friend there and
- 00:33:21every place that i've been throughout my
- 00:33:22career from internship all the way till
- 00:33:24now i've had some form of connection or
- 00:33:26relationship with somebody there or
- 00:33:28somewhat related
- 00:33:30so
- 00:33:31the long answer to that is you know
- 00:33:32relationships are important uh
- 00:33:34don't take those for granted go out
- 00:33:36there and be curious and connect with
- 00:33:37people
- 00:33:38yeah 100 and i would encourage the
- 00:33:40students you know don't
- 00:33:43don't get discouraged like when you're
- 00:33:45out there and you cast a wide net you
- 00:33:46know group sales manager we're talking
- 00:33:48to matt today i mean there's 32 teams in
- 00:33:51the nfl 30 teams in major league
- 00:33:53baseball 30 teams in the nba so if
- 00:33:55you're just looking at pro sports and
- 00:33:56that's not even including hockey and
- 00:33:57soccer
- 00:33:59connect with all of them yeah and then
- 00:34:01if two or three of them get back to you
- 00:34:02now you've got two or three people that
- 00:34:04you can network with and really start to
- 00:34:06gain
- 00:34:07um some strong connections that can help
- 00:34:09you get those internships and entry
- 00:34:10level jobs to get
- 00:34:12the quote-unquote dream job eventually
- 00:34:15um because like matt said there's a lot
- 00:34:17of people that are busy some people are
- 00:34:19better about checking on linkedin than
- 00:34:20others you can't get discouraged when
- 00:34:22you're trying to utilize something like
- 00:34:24linkedin
- 00:34:25as a networking tool
- 00:34:27that's great advice for sure
- 00:34:29next question here from a student
- 00:34:31what qualities or attributes do you
- 00:34:33personally look for
- 00:34:35when you're sitting across from someone
- 00:34:36in an interview when you're looking to
- 00:34:38hire a new sales rep or whatever it may
- 00:34:40be what are the qualities and attributes
- 00:34:42that stand out to you matt
- 00:34:44yeah so i'll give a few here
- 00:34:46we'll start off with you know and some
- 00:34:47might sound obvious but it's you know
- 00:34:49california sometimes not every candidate
- 00:34:51might portray these uh these qualities
- 00:34:53so one obviously be passionate about
- 00:34:55what you're doing talked about earlier
- 00:34:56uh getting started not only getting
- 00:34:58started but stay in the sports industry
- 00:34:59it's a grind it's it's a lot of work so
- 00:35:01if you don't truly like what you're
- 00:35:02doing if you're not doing it with an
- 00:35:03intention uh you're not going to see
- 00:35:05that passion in your work anymore and
- 00:35:07you're not going to be about it so try
- 00:35:09to find it is whatever it is you decide
- 00:35:11whether it's ticket sales stadium
- 00:35:12operations marketing broadcasting
- 00:35:14journal sports writing journals and
- 00:35:16social media try to find ways that you
- 00:35:17love what you do and then while doing it
- 00:35:19so that's one i would say
- 00:35:22positive attitude um
- 00:35:24we spent a lot of hours together so when
- 00:35:26i'm when we're looking to bring new
- 00:35:27people into our team we know that we
- 00:35:29have established the titans a very good
- 00:35:31front office culture and we we're with
- 00:35:33each other and all at all times of the
- 00:35:34day all times of the night and through
- 00:35:36holidays and weekends so we want to make
- 00:35:37sure there's people that when times are
- 00:35:39tough and
- 00:35:40you can't control 70 000 fans at one
- 00:35:42time so we know there's always things
- 00:35:43that pop up on game days who are the
- 00:35:45people that if things are going wrong
- 00:35:46they're not going to get down on
- 00:35:47themselves or be
- 00:35:48upset or causing a scene throwing a
- 00:35:50tantrum keeping that positive attitude
- 00:35:52and um it's a lot easier for us to be
- 00:35:55like you know this person kind of
- 00:35:56contain their composure they're cool we
- 00:35:57like to keep them around and finding
- 00:35:59those people within there
- 00:36:00the next one i would say being a team
- 00:36:02player um not being selfish
- 00:36:04while sales might be a game of in a day
- 00:36:06you can
- 00:36:07model specifically you can measure
- 00:36:08people based on numbers sometimes the
- 00:36:10immeasurable things are even more
- 00:36:11important when looking for that person
- 00:36:13so um
- 00:36:14having that team play while you might
- 00:36:15have your own number you have a
- 00:36:16department number
- 00:36:18we need to all be you know
- 00:36:20respectful to each other work well
- 00:36:21together and it's always all hands on
- 00:36:23deck ever for a lot of things there um
- 00:36:26and then
- 00:36:27you know the outgoing the drive the hard
- 00:36:29working we like to look for you know
- 00:36:31people who have creative minds might
- 00:36:32think a little bit differently along
- 00:36:33those a lot of the uh a lot of trends
- 00:36:35you might hear but definitely the those
- 00:36:36are the big hitters i would say
- 00:36:39yeah i think you've touched on a lot of
- 00:36:41them there's little things you can do to
- 00:36:43stand out with um even what jake did you
- 00:36:45know looking at the person you're about
- 00:36:47to interview with look at their bio
- 00:36:49learn a little bit about them so now
- 00:36:50when you're interviewing it becomes more
- 00:36:52of conversation don't forget to send
- 00:36:54thank yous
- 00:36:55shout out to austin pasco we've had him
- 00:36:57on the show before from the saints he's
- 00:36:59so adamant about those personal
- 00:37:01handwritten thank you letters those go a
- 00:37:03long way so there's you know not only
- 00:37:05characteristics but there's physical
- 00:37:07tangible things you can do
- 00:37:08to separate yourself from others that uh
- 00:37:10you might be competing against when
- 00:37:12you're interviewing for that job i think
- 00:37:14you you did a good job you have someone
- 00:37:16else that out there matt
- 00:37:17no i was gonna say the hammered no thing
- 00:37:19always a great talk so he said they'll
- 00:37:20stand out anyone could shoot over a
- 00:37:21quick email you know it's a lot quicker
- 00:37:23a lot easier but uh in a day and age
- 00:37:25we're not many people probably know how
- 00:37:26to how to uh put a stamp on an envelope
- 00:37:28um which has a little more of a personal
- 00:37:29touch to it there yeah 100 for sure um
- 00:37:33next question kind of unique this is
- 00:37:34from a student from spelman so you might
- 00:37:37have to think back to the classes you
- 00:37:39took in college matt yeah reference this
- 00:37:41because i don't think it's really in the
- 00:37:43sales world unless
- 00:37:44i misunderstand the sales world but
- 00:37:46student from spelman uh biology major
- 00:37:49junior athletic training is of interest
- 00:37:52to them what uh advice would you give
- 00:37:54someone that's trying to get into
- 00:37:55athletic training what's the route to
- 00:37:56kind of take and the people they should
- 00:37:58be reaching out to yeah i mean again
- 00:38:00obviously outside of sales work i think
- 00:38:01the same things really still apply uh
- 00:38:02when it comes down to going out and
- 00:38:04finding people within
- 00:38:06those fields um with athletic training
- 00:38:08whether it's if you want to do it from a
- 00:38:10practice standpoint within a team an
- 00:38:11organization all the above you know find
- 00:38:14people who are in those roles i'm sure
- 00:38:15they're still actively on linkedin you
- 00:38:16can find their practice their names
- 00:38:17online and reach out connect with them
- 00:38:19learn from them see what advice they can
- 00:38:21give you in terms of how they get into
- 00:38:23the industry if they can go back and do
- 00:38:24things differently what would that be
- 00:38:26what advice would they have for their
- 00:38:27you know their past self um along those
- 00:38:30and
- 00:38:31and again sales or not i think the same
- 00:38:32thing still apply stay in touch with
- 00:38:33that person keeping those relationships
- 00:38:36open and building and um it's
- 00:38:38you can't really over emphasize the
- 00:38:40importance of you know freaking out
- 00:38:42people while you can before you can
- 00:38:43before you get out of school now when
- 00:38:44you have no relationships in the field
- 00:38:46you never know who's going to be where
- 00:38:48in the future
- 00:38:49so definitely go for that learn as much
- 00:38:51if there's any volunteer opportunities
- 00:38:53go for it you know
- 00:38:55yeah another great piece of advice you
- 00:38:57you mentioned kind of the built-in
- 00:38:59network you have when you're in school
- 00:39:01and you made me think of it is don't be
- 00:39:04afraid to network with your classmates
- 00:39:06because you never know where they're
- 00:39:07going to end up someday make sure you
- 00:39:09have great relationships with your
- 00:39:10professors because you never know who
- 00:39:11they know in the industry um i'm sure
- 00:39:14they tell you that but
- 00:39:15we're all sitting here jake matt myself
- 00:39:18we all did the sport management major we
- 00:39:20kind of did that route we heard those
- 00:39:21things that's from our professors and
- 00:39:23now that we're in the industry it's like
- 00:39:25oh yeah they were right those things
- 00:39:26that they were saying those those are
- 00:39:28you know great pieces of advice i got
- 00:39:30two more questions from our students and
- 00:39:31then i'll send it back to jake uh it'll
- 00:39:33be it'll be all for me but um
- 00:39:36tyler a student from howard university
- 00:39:38said uh how important are the
- 00:39:40connections that you're building
- 00:39:42internally whether you know you get the
- 00:39:44opportunity to build a connection with a
- 00:39:45player or you know someone else in the
- 00:39:47organization that maybe has a position
- 00:39:49above you on the organizational chart
- 00:39:51how important are those connections uh
- 00:39:53to you and your career and how you try
- 00:39:55to move up in the sport uh management
- 00:39:57world
- 00:39:58yeah is my uh is my connection good if
- 00:40:00someone was unstable for a minute there
- 00:40:01if i broke up can you guys hear me yeah
- 00:40:03i can still hear you you're good okay
- 00:40:04all right so uh with that i'll uh i'll
- 00:40:07give that a two part to start you know
- 00:40:08with the the player side things working
- 00:40:09in sports a lot of people do kind of
- 00:40:11think that it is heavy involved with the
- 00:40:13the player side of things and you know
- 00:40:14being on the field the coaches see
- 00:40:16people around i'll be honestly working
- 00:40:17in sports for however many years there's
- 00:40:19not too much play interaction you might
- 00:40:20see them at events here and there um so
- 00:40:22while it is cool when it does happen uh
- 00:40:24in that sales roles those business roles
- 00:40:25it it's not a super big piece of kind of
- 00:40:27what it is that you do um it's more
- 00:40:28again it's about selling that experience
- 00:40:30there to kind of paint the picture on
- 00:40:31that but the internal relationships um
- 00:40:34will go even obviously within department
- 00:40:36it's obvious i won't spend too much time
- 00:40:37on that but within other departments you
- 00:40:39know once you
- 00:40:41sports teams all work together everyone
- 00:40:42has their own departments their own kind
- 00:40:44of roles right there but collectively
- 00:40:46yeah the end game is to portray the
- 00:40:47titans organization as uh this you know
- 00:40:49the elite community partner and it's
- 00:40:51provide the best game day experience and
- 00:40:52in order to do that with all your
- 00:40:54clients and all your people it's you
- 00:40:55rely on tons of others across other
- 00:40:57departments so
- 00:40:58anytime it is that you're working your
- 00:41:00day in day out whether you're working
- 00:41:01with somebody directly indirectly
- 00:41:03always put your best foot forward your
- 00:41:05best effort your positive attitude
- 00:41:06because
- 00:41:07you never know who is working uh who is
- 00:41:10watching you and kind of their
- 00:41:11impression on you know how it is that
- 00:41:13you work and so many times to where
- 00:41:15somebody who i might not have spoken
- 00:41:16with too much but i've you know worked
- 00:41:17the same buildings over two years next
- 00:41:19you know they're they're the one you
- 00:41:21know putting you off and putting the
- 00:41:22good word about your next gig or you're
- 00:41:24you know getting up to that next
- 00:41:25promotion there so um always go forward
- 00:41:28there and you can you never know who
- 00:41:29you'll see when when they can make that
- 00:41:31introduction for you at that next place
- 00:41:32and again just really be on the same
- 00:41:34page each other as a team in an
- 00:41:35organization
- 00:41:36yeah great advice there um for sure last
- 00:41:40question from our students is from
- 00:41:42khalil a student from sacramento state
- 00:41:44university um curious so we've talked a
- 00:41:47lot about sales today we even touched on
- 00:41:49athletic training there briefly um if
- 00:41:51you're a business you're a sport
- 00:41:53management student kahlil's curious okay
- 00:41:55i heard you you can do sales what else
- 00:41:58can you do
- 00:41:59with that type of degree what i mean
- 00:42:01you're going into work every day in
- 00:42:02nashville with the titans what what
- 00:42:04other departments are you walking past
- 00:42:06each day that could be opportunities for
- 00:42:08our students that are watching yeah no
- 00:42:10great question absolutely so within i'll
- 00:42:12just start naming a bunch of different
- 00:42:13parts within it within the titans and
- 00:42:15then i talked from a pro sports team's
- 00:42:16perspective there so you know you have
- 00:42:18your your sales so within their tickets
- 00:42:20out so group sales season ticket sales
- 00:42:22premium sell selling your your luxury
- 00:42:24suites and your you know high-end
- 00:42:25hospitality areas um and then within
- 00:42:28that you know your partnership sells so
- 00:42:30that's your you know your nissan
- 00:42:32stadiums your bridgestones your although
- 00:42:34when you go to games everything kind of
- 00:42:35you see within a stadium or arena all
- 00:42:38that people selling kind of that
- 00:42:39advertising within the stadium within
- 00:42:41different social media
- 00:42:43pays there
- 00:42:44and all that so that's the kind of the
- 00:42:46sales aspect of it uh to every sales
- 00:42:48role there's a service role so that's
- 00:42:49customer service once people
- 00:42:51on the south side kind of get them in
- 00:42:53it's on the new department the servicing
- 00:42:55department to kind of keep them happy
- 00:42:57they're answering the day-to-day
- 00:42:58questions fulfill the obligations of
- 00:43:00what it is that sales person kind of
- 00:43:01sold them on so that's a big part of
- 00:43:03customer service from the ticketing from
- 00:43:04the premium from the corporate
- 00:43:05partnership standpoint
- 00:43:07uh and then branching off away from the
- 00:43:09sales service side of things uh you know
- 00:43:11you have your marketing departments
- 00:43:12creating different events throughout the
- 00:43:13community how do we connect with not
- 00:43:15your non-typical titans fans what can we
- 00:43:17do that's not just football uh it was
- 00:43:20you know hosting different watch parties
- 00:43:21or um doing a yoga event on the field or
- 00:43:25showing up to different uh whether it's
- 00:43:28you know parades or kids days and just
- 00:43:30having a table there bringing the mascot
- 00:43:31out bringing the titans cheer team out
- 00:43:34so uh marketing is kind of a wide range
- 00:43:36net there's a lot within their social
- 00:43:37media always a popular one especially
- 00:43:39with students these days kind of looking
- 00:43:41to learn more about that we have a full
- 00:43:43full team of social media specialists um
- 00:43:45all kind of one person got overseas and
- 00:43:46then a few within the department kind of
- 00:43:48handling each account and um having
- 00:43:50strategy behind that why they do certain
- 00:43:52thing at certain times why they post
- 00:43:53certain things on different platforms so
- 00:43:55big one there then
- 00:43:57you know then we'll go into stadium
- 00:43:59operations fan experience so while we're
- 00:44:02all the ones looking to bring as many
- 00:44:03people as possible and dealing with the
- 00:44:04individual relationships
- 00:44:06you know there's a full team of people
- 00:44:08making sure that stadium is ready to
- 00:44:09roll parking lots are open the timing of
- 00:44:11this deal with the vendors load in
- 00:44:12loadout uh then on the team side of
- 00:44:15things the team traveled all we talked
- 00:44:16about earlier athletic training the
- 00:44:18player operations um so many different
- 00:44:21kind of categories there broadcasting
- 00:44:22public relations um a team like the
- 00:44:25titans is such a
- 00:44:26valued you know a logo it's it's it
- 00:44:29stands out to people so you always want
- 00:44:30to have people who are pros at how it is
- 00:44:32to represent titans how to speak on
- 00:44:34behalf of them and understanding the
- 00:44:35mission of the organization for training
- 00:44:37at the public uh community impact uh
- 00:44:39probably one of the biggest ones in
- 00:44:40terms of um what we try to
- 00:44:43serve our local community here that's
- 00:44:45getting out there we are as a staff
- 00:44:47we'll go out and do different volunteer
- 00:44:49opportunities when we have those crazy
- 00:44:50tornadoes here
- 00:44:52a couple years back we full team out
- 00:44:54there
- 00:44:54front office staff you know coaches
- 00:44:56players gm everybody out there in our
- 00:44:58communities anytime something like that
- 00:44:59happens
- 00:45:00how can we have people lean on us beyond
- 00:45:02just providing those big wins on sundays
- 00:45:04so that's that's a few right there but
- 00:45:07again really
- 00:45:08for anyone that on you know how to
- 00:45:10find other departments or things that
- 00:45:12exist in a sports team pull up any
- 00:45:14sports team website somewhere within
- 00:45:15there whether it's under the roster tab
- 00:45:17or the stadium name tab there's going to
- 00:45:19be a little link that's going to say
- 00:45:20like front office staff or you know
- 00:45:22anything along those lines and you click
- 00:45:23on there and it's going to have a full
- 00:45:24list of people it's going to have every
- 00:45:26single department broken down by title
- 00:45:28and then each person under that what
- 00:45:30their role is and it's gonna really
- 00:45:32spell it all out for you so there's if
- 00:45:33the resources are there in terms of
- 00:45:35finding those names and departments
- 00:45:37people within them their names their
- 00:45:38role and everything um so it's
- 00:45:40definitely a great way to kind of go and
- 00:45:41browse around and then dive deeper from
- 00:45:43there
- 00:45:44yeah for sure i love how at the end you
- 00:45:45gave the advice to just go to the team
- 00:45:47websites yeah the staff directory's
- 00:45:49gonna be there you know you can find it
- 00:45:51i'm sure if you just google tennessee
- 00:45:53titan staff director it'll take you
- 00:45:54straight to the page um and that's a
- 00:45:56great way if you're a student and you're
- 00:45:58like i don't know what i want to do yet
- 00:46:00you can go on there and you can see i
- 00:46:02mean matt just rattled off 20 probably
- 00:46:04plus different departments but there's
- 00:46:06so much more out there you can see all
- 00:46:08the different opportunities and you go
- 00:46:10oh social media oh football ops this
- 00:46:12sounds interesting and then you start
- 00:46:13that networking process find some of
- 00:46:15those people talk to them set up that
- 00:46:17quick 15-minute zoom call or whatever it
- 00:46:19may be ask some questions over an email
- 00:46:22um
- 00:46:23that's how you build the network that's
- 00:46:24how you get your foot in the door
- 00:46:26so that you can get the job that you
- 00:46:28want someday so matt thank you so much
- 00:46:30for rattling all those those different
- 00:46:32careers off i know the students
- 00:46:33appreciate that and i'm sure jake
- 00:46:35probably has another couple of questions
- 00:46:36for you but on behalf of myself and the
- 00:46:38students thank you man for being a part
- 00:46:40of the program with us today absolutely
- 00:46:41thanks nathan
- 00:46:42yes thanks thanks nathan those students
- 00:46:44go through some awesome questions matt
- 00:46:46had some awesome insight there and like
- 00:46:47nathan got time here for a few more and
- 00:46:49i always like to ask this question you
- 00:46:51know we talk so much about what you do
- 00:46:52inside the office uh but but you know i
- 00:46:55know nathan knows working in sports
- 00:46:58there are some pretty cool things you
- 00:47:00get to be a part of that not a lot of
- 00:47:01other people get the chance to so
- 00:47:03when your career is over you're backing
- 00:47:05your lazy boy at home all retired what
- 00:47:06is that one event that you've been to or
- 00:47:09been a part of or game you remember that
- 00:47:11when you sit back in your in your
- 00:47:13recliner at the end of your career you
- 00:47:14go man i can't believe i was there what
- 00:47:17what so far would that would that game
- 00:47:19that moment be for you yeah i'll just
- 00:47:21spit a few out that i can think off top
- 00:47:22of mind here at nine celery ranking one
- 00:47:24through three um let's see honestly one
- 00:47:27of
- 00:47:28a couple of the titans just most
- 00:47:29recently the crazy monday night win
- 00:47:30versus the bills this year the goal line
- 00:47:32stand josh allen gets stuff there and
- 00:47:33they go on to kind of walk off win on
- 00:47:36defense that one was awesome um
- 00:47:39let's see here and then we'll throw
- 00:47:40another one working at the orange bowl
- 00:47:42that one year kind of working in that
- 00:47:44that very high-end game or if it was a
- 00:47:46two-verse kylie murray semi-final game
- 00:47:48and also kind of seeing two big-name
- 00:47:49college teams going on at crazy fan
- 00:47:51bases atmosphere like no other uh back
- 00:47:53at the heat
- 00:47:55when dwyane wade left the heat
- 00:47:57went through whatever cycles he went
- 00:47:59through the bulls the cavs before
- 00:48:00ultimately coming back i think it was
- 00:48:02his first full game back hit a
- 00:48:03game-winning shot
- 00:48:05in february so the place is going
- 00:48:06absolutely nuts for that um
- 00:48:08and then a number of others and then one
- 00:48:11with the titans not at a home game uh in
- 00:48:132019 when we were the
- 00:48:16kind of that underdog story of barely
- 00:48:17getting to play off that nine and 17
- 00:48:19limping in and all of a sudden we're
- 00:48:20making this run through the afc and
- 00:48:21we're
- 00:48:22knocking off the number one seed lamar
- 00:48:24jack or patriots first picking off tom
- 00:48:26brady to end the game there and uh
- 00:48:28beating lamar jackson and going to
- 00:48:29kansas city ultimate losing that one but
- 00:48:31that playoff run we didn't host any of
- 00:48:33those home playoff games but just like
- 00:48:35the watch parties we'll throw for our
- 00:48:36fans our season ticket members and our
- 00:48:38top clients and uh being with you know
- 00:48:40all again talk about earlier all the
- 00:48:42people you spend all these hours with
- 00:48:43kind of being with them side by side to
- 00:48:44celebrate those things in all those
- 00:48:46moments right there the reason why
- 00:48:47they're all kind of so special is like
- 00:48:49i could tell you who i was standing next
- 00:48:50to at each of those things and what we
- 00:48:52were doing jumping around going crazy on
- 00:48:54the platform and uh whether it's to the
- 00:48:55watch part things like that so it all
- 00:48:57really does come back to having those
- 00:48:58people around you remembering
- 00:49:00probably those moments because of what
- 00:49:02was actually not necessarily the
- 00:49:03craziest moment on the field it just
- 00:49:04happened to work out that way yeah
- 00:49:05absolutely uh another cool thing i like
- 00:49:07to touch on you know sports is so unique
- 00:49:10yes it's like every other organization
- 00:49:12but there's a whole football side to it
- 00:49:14too and you know the football side is
- 00:49:16obviously the prominent one that
- 00:49:17everybody sees on tv they see the
- 00:49:19stories about and then the business side
- 00:49:21kind of takes that back seat but both
- 00:49:22work so well and so in tune together and
- 00:49:25i always like when we talk to folks from
- 00:49:27the tennessee titans got a great
- 00:49:28relationship with with your staff and
- 00:49:30um as an ohio state fan we got to talk
- 00:49:32about mike rabel uh coming in head coach
- 00:49:34polarizing guy player first guy
- 00:49:37always brings the intensity how do you
- 00:49:39see that that theme that he creates with
- 00:49:42the football team kind of spill over to
- 00:49:44the business side and how does that
- 00:49:45relationship work yeah no i think that's
- 00:49:48a great question you couldn't be more
- 00:49:49right i mean it starts even above him
- 00:49:51above rainbow rabble fits it perfectly
- 00:49:52he's the guy that everyone sees but
- 00:49:54his that's a reflection of our whole
- 00:49:56organization top to bottom football
- 00:49:57business non-stop and it goes up to
- 00:49:59ownership uh amy adam strunk our
- 00:50:01majority owner she really started taking
- 00:50:03the reins in 2015 around the past few
- 00:50:06years all the changes we've seen
- 00:50:08off the field as a business and then
- 00:50:10really on the field it spilled over as
- 00:50:12well with the hiring of john robinson
- 00:50:14who brought in mike frable um with him
- 00:50:16and those two guys along with amy our
- 00:50:18owner uh really
- 00:50:20put the standard of all right here's our
- 00:50:21team culture i don't care if you're the
- 00:50:23starting running back i don't care if
- 00:50:24you're alignment i don't care if you're
- 00:50:25selling tickets i don't think you're
- 00:50:26setting up the cones outside the stadium
- 00:50:28this is what we're all about uh and
- 00:50:29holding people kind of to that standard
- 00:50:31so um
- 00:50:32it does work out so well it's so obvious
- 00:50:34when you see it from brabel of that that
- 00:50:36no bs strictly business we're here to
- 00:50:38win type of thing or a winning
- 00:50:39organization
- 00:50:40and again you can't control what's
- 00:50:41happening on the field but having that
- 00:50:42mindset we're going to win off the field
- 00:50:44too no matter what happens on sunday
- 00:50:46like we're going to do things the right
- 00:50:47way with the right integrity and for the
- 00:50:49right reasons uh and that's just a kind
- 00:50:52of an all-in tie-in top to bottom so the
- 00:50:54behind the scenes be on the field and
- 00:50:56kind of that leadership from the top
- 00:50:57down
- 00:50:58and the special thing about that is you
- 00:51:00can learn so much from that so you look
- 00:51:02at the sport of football and you know
- 00:51:03you're involved in it every day you're
- 00:51:05with an nfl organization you're
- 00:51:07obviously a fan of the game so seeing
- 00:51:10the game of football from such a
- 00:51:11different perspective as myself or
- 00:51:13somebody who might be a fan watching it
- 00:51:15on tv
- 00:51:16what do you feel the game of football
- 00:51:17can teach those who are fans of it play
- 00:51:20it watch it on tv what are those life
- 00:51:21lessons you believe the game of football
- 00:51:23teaches yeah uh a lot into the the
- 00:51:26passion the discipline the hard work the
- 00:51:27teamwork stuff there uh that all spills
- 00:51:30over into your everyday life whether you
- 00:51:31become a player or not
- 00:51:33if you're not dedicated to your crafting
- 00:51:35always looking to get better and learn
- 00:51:36from others around you and put in the
- 00:51:38extra time and um
- 00:51:40establish those relationships with
- 00:51:42others and it's not just salesworks
- 00:51:43relationships it's the o-line working
- 00:51:45together to make sure that donna hill
- 00:51:46stays protected and make sure that holds
- 00:51:47big enough for henry to run through
- 00:51:49it really it's in every aspect of life
- 00:51:51right there football is just a good way
- 00:51:52for people to to see it um but pull it
- 00:51:54away from there yes you gotta love what
- 00:51:57you do you gotta be willing to sacrifice
- 00:51:58for others and uh really go after and
- 00:52:00just have fun with it too you know at
- 00:52:02the same time it is it is business it's
- 00:52:04you know your career everything right
- 00:52:06there but you're in this game for a
- 00:52:07reason it's because you love to compete
- 00:52:09you love sports and you have to kind of
- 00:52:10be around those cool experiences too so
- 00:52:12while we put a lot of emphasis on the
- 00:52:14you know
- 00:52:15make the hundred calls this that grind
- 00:52:17no stop you know always be out there
- 00:52:19networking uh it's fun so don't take a
- 00:52:21step back once a while kind of embrace
- 00:52:23what's kind of going on around you uh so
- 00:52:24you will have those experiences to kind
- 00:52:26of remember look back on
- 00:52:28and how do you take that those lessons
- 00:52:30right there that you just talked about
- 00:52:31and apply them to your life or your job
- 00:52:34or your day-to-day office life how not
- 00:52:37only within the organization because
- 00:52:39there's such a great relationship there
- 00:52:40we already talked about that but as a
- 00:52:42student who might play a sport or or
- 00:52:44know of these values how do you take
- 00:52:46them and then apply them to what you do
- 00:52:48you know off the field on a day-to-day
- 00:52:50basis
- 00:52:51yeah i mean you do kind of notice it uh
- 00:52:53that once you kind of look a little
- 00:52:55older a little more i guess wise and
- 00:52:56kind of looking around yourself and
- 00:52:58doing what you do in the office kind of
- 00:52:59in your role in a sales role where your
- 00:53:01job is to go out and maintain and build
- 00:53:03and start and really shift you look
- 00:53:04around and
- 00:53:05then you kind of realize oh i got a lot
- 00:53:06of great friends around me still and a
- 00:53:08lot of people i keep in touch with that
- 00:53:09you talked about earlier our friends
- 00:53:10from i haven't seen in five years to
- 00:53:12still stay in touch with brianna harris
- 00:53:13as you mentioned earlier just because it
- 00:53:15kind of becomes ingrained in who you are
- 00:53:16what you're kind of putting in
- 00:53:18into your professional life your
- 00:53:19personal life and if you could find what
- 00:53:20it is that
- 00:53:22you could be kind of who you are in your
- 00:53:24personal life and allow that to
- 00:53:26drive your success in your professional
- 00:53:27life uh that's when things start kind of
- 00:53:29getting easy and having fun and i always
- 00:53:31like to use a piece of advice i received
- 00:53:33from my first manager with the heat
- 00:53:36uh he kind of saw that and
- 00:53:37when i first got there he was i was
- 00:53:39miley basically he was coming and
- 00:53:40grinding out phone calls picking up the
- 00:53:42phone billboard he's like all right you
- 00:53:43got to take a step back because i see
- 00:53:44you when you're not at your desk by the
- 00:53:46phone i see you outside of the office i
- 00:53:47see you doing this how do you get that
- 00:53:49person to be that person right here and
- 00:53:50you're going to kill it uh his his exact
- 00:53:52line was don't be mad be mangled because
- 00:53:54everyone calls my last name so uh that
- 00:53:57was kind of his his coach me there
- 00:53:58that's one thing that kind of stuck with
- 00:53:59me and uh since then it kind of turned
- 00:54:01it more into a fun day-to-day thing and
- 00:54:04less about taking things so seriously
- 00:54:05but while still putting the work
- 00:54:07a lot of the comments make a lot of
- 00:54:08sense now that that people call you
- 00:54:10mango they're starting to make a little
- 00:54:11bit of sense
- 00:54:14and you know that's one great piece of
- 00:54:16advice you've given so many great pieces
- 00:54:17of advice whether it's you know about
- 00:54:19you know life as a ticket life and
- 00:54:21ticket sales or
- 00:54:23building a network building
- 00:54:24relationships but if we can sum
- 00:54:26everything up today kind of what's that
- 00:54:28one final piece of advice you want
- 00:54:30students watching students are going to
- 00:54:31watch this six months from now who might
- 00:54:33just catch it on youtube by happenstance
- 00:54:35what's that one piece of advice you want
- 00:54:37somebody to walk away with today
- 00:54:40yep i would say i'll kind of tie into
- 00:54:41kind of a three pronged thing with one
- 00:54:43so it's going to be the relationships
- 00:54:44don't underestimate the value of
- 00:54:45relationships they're super important go
- 00:54:47out there establish them don't be afraid
- 00:54:49grow them
- 00:54:50and be curious find it is be curious now
- 00:54:53go out there reach out to as many people
- 00:54:54as you need to to find what it is that
- 00:54:57what you want to do
- 00:54:58volunteer get involved it's just and
- 00:55:00that's all going to help each other the
- 00:55:01more you volunteer the more you reach
- 00:55:03out to people and learn the more you'll
- 00:55:05start building those relationships and
- 00:55:06put together and that's ultimately what
- 00:55:07you find what you're passionate about
- 00:55:09which kind of that third piece uh there
- 00:55:11of it is
- 00:55:12find what is passionate and work for
- 00:55:13that because it's again you're gonna be
- 00:55:15doing it day in and day out for for a
- 00:55:17long time so you don't wanna have
- 00:55:18something that you don't really believe
- 00:55:19in and have fun doing so those three
- 00:55:21kind of tie in together well i like to
- 00:55:22give that advice
- 00:55:24i think that's a great way to wrap up
- 00:55:25this installment of the pro football
- 00:55:26hall of fame before the snap series
