first and foremost if you know you've
  • 00:03:03
seen the title our guest today is matt
  • 00:03:05
mango from the tennessee titans so first
  • 00:03:07
and foremost matt thank you so much for
  • 00:03:10
giving up some of your time we know the
  • 00:03:11
nfl season's over but we know that it's
  • 00:03:13
    not just an 18 week
  • 00:03:16
year job you know you do it every day
  • 00:03:17
there's always something to work on so
  • 00:03:19
thank you for giving some of your
  • 00:03:20
gracious time uh to be a part of the
  • 00:03:22
    program today absolutely jake appreciate
  • 00:03:24
you having me and yeah that would be
  • 00:03:25
nice with just an 18-month gig right
  • 00:03:28
    yeah
  • 00:03:29
secondly i'd like to thank our teachers
  • 00:03:31
    administrators professors educators
  • 00:03:33
anybody that either is watching us live
  • 00:03:34
in their classroom right now or shared
  • 00:03:36
this program out with their students uh
  • 00:03:38
thank you so much for allowing us to
  • 00:03:40
just be a small part of your students
  • 00:03:41
learning experience this year and lastly
  • 00:03:44
as always gotta thank our students uh
  • 00:03:46
you know without our students it would
  • 00:03:48
just be me it would just be nathan it'd
  • 00:03:50
just be jerry asking matt a bunch of
  • 00:03:51
questions uh and we don't want to do
  • 00:03:53
that this is an opportunity for you to
  • 00:03:55
start to build your network and which
  • 00:03:57
we'll talk about how important that is
  • 00:03:59
and how important networking is today uh
  • 00:04:01
to grow your network in the sports field
  • 00:04:03
uh you've all probably have heard it
  • 00:04:05
matt's going to probably touch on it
  • 00:04:06
today if you want to get a job in sports
  • 00:04:09
kind of the first way to get that job is
  • 00:04:11
to start in ticket sales and then grow
  • 00:04:12
from there whether it would be within
  • 00:04:14
that field or another field um so this
  • 00:04:16
is going to be i think it's going to be
  • 00:04:18
a pretty popular program we're going to
  • 00:04:19
have a lot of questions today i hope um
  • 00:04:21
so if you are watching us live and you
  • 00:04:23
do have a question as always put it in
  • 00:04:25
the live chat nathan sitting in the room
  • 00:04:27
over here behind me uh he is going to be
  • 00:04:29
watching that live chat the entire
  • 00:04:31
program pulling those questions from our
  • 00:04:33
students i've got i've got the stream
  • 00:04:35
put up here we've already got some
  • 00:04:37
comments rolling in uh if you want to
  • 00:04:40
ask a question be the first let us know
  • 00:04:41
your name the school you would you
  • 00:04:43
attend and what your question is and
  • 00:04:46
we'll do our best to make that part of
  • 00:04:47
the program the goal is to get as many
  • 00:04:48
of those questions in today as possible
  • 00:04:51
so i don't have to talk the entire time
  • 00:04:53
    so
  • 00:04:54
as always i want to make sure you get
  • 00:04:56
those questions and let us know where
  • 00:04:57
    you're watching from
  • 00:04:58
so today as previously mentioned and as
  • 00:05:00
already seen our special guest today is
  • 00:05:02
matt mango he just finished up his third
  • 00:05:05
year with the tennessee titans uh and
  • 00:05:07
his second as the group sales manager
  • 00:05:10
in his role he and the group sales team
  • 00:05:12
    specialize in creating unique group
  • 00:05:14
experiences at titans for low titans
  • 00:05:17
    games for local corporations schools
  • 00:05:19
    youth sport leagues and other
  • 00:05:20
    organizations through different ticket
  • 00:05:22
and hospitality packages in 2012 he
  • 00:05:25
began his career in sports in minor
  • 00:05:27
league baseball another great way to get
  • 00:05:29
involved in sports with the trenton
  • 00:05:31
thunder the former double-a affiliate of
  • 00:05:33
the new york yankees worked his way up
  • 00:05:35
the ladder of the thunder group sales
  • 00:05:37
department before he joined the miami
  • 00:05:38
heat in the nba the group sales team
  • 00:05:40
becoming a top contributor in miami from
  • 00:05:43
2015 to 2018. most recently before the
  • 00:05:46
titans he worked the orange bowl
  • 00:05:48
    committee assisting their premium sales
  • 00:05:51
efforts of the 2018 college football
  • 00:05:53
    playoff semifinal game before moving
  • 00:05:55
from miami to nashville to join the
  • 00:05:57
    titans in 2019
  • 00:05:59
from new jersey graduated with a degree
  • 00:06:01
    in sport management and communication
  • 00:06:03
from rutgers the state university of new
  • 00:06:05
jersey so everybody let's welcome our
  • 00:06:07
special guest today matt mango matt
  • 00:06:09
    welcome
  • 00:06:10
awesome jake appreciate you having me
  • 00:06:12
there and kind of running through the
  • 00:06:13
background and uh kind of walking along
  • 00:06:15
my path there i think he covered it
  • 00:06:17
pretty well i know we'll kind of go a
  • 00:06:18
little more into what some of those
  • 00:06:20
roles exactly work on it throughout the
  • 00:06:21
uh throughout the talk here today so
  • 00:06:24
i'm ready to jump in some questions if
  • 00:06:25
you are awesome well we're going to
  • 00:06:27
start out i always joke but the the
  • 00:06:29
great thing about hosting this program
  • 00:06:30
is i always get to ask the first couple
  • 00:06:32
questions um talk a little bit about it
  • 00:06:34
in your bio there 10 000 foot view
  • 00:06:36
overview what does the day-to-day life
  • 00:06:38
with someone with your career look like
  • 00:06:40
yep so it is within the ticket sales
  • 00:06:43
realm uh when you dive a little deeper
  • 00:06:45
it's within the group sales realm you
  • 00:06:46
talk on some things there that's the
  • 00:06:48
creators you get unique experiences and
  • 00:06:50
different things to titans teams beyond
  • 00:06:52
just you know showing up but when the
  • 00:06:53
game starts sitting in this seat and
  • 00:06:55
then kind of leaving after it's over so
  • 00:06:57
    um
  • 00:06:58
whether that be working with different
  • 00:07:00
youth sports leads to get them on the
  • 00:07:01
field after the game as a part of their
  • 00:07:02
ticket purchase or working with a local
  • 00:07:05
company to put on a big you know a
  • 00:07:06
pregame tailgate in one of our titan
  • 00:07:08
town areas uh before the game and our
  • 00:07:11
post-game school photos on the field
  • 00:07:12
with the purchase of their tickets so
  • 00:07:14
    the day-to-day is ultimately everything
  • 00:07:16
throughout the year to build up to those
  • 00:07:18
    experiences on game day and
  • 00:07:19
uh from the uh you know top down it's
  • 00:07:22
how do you go out throughout the year
  • 00:07:23
    you mentioned earlier football season
  • 00:07:25
just wrapped up but really for us this
  • 00:07:27
is our style season right now this is
  • 00:07:28
about going out in the community
  • 00:07:30
    building up those relationships getting
  • 00:07:31
in front of those people as community
  • 00:07:32
    leaders whether it's companies schools
  • 00:07:35
sports lease churches you name it alumni
  • 00:07:37
associations we're trying to figure out
  • 00:07:39
okay if you guys are used to coming
  • 00:07:41
    together
  • 00:07:42
you know typically outside of a titan's
  • 00:07:44
game how do we get that to happen inside
  • 00:07:45
of nissan stating the titans so
  • 00:07:48
    calls emails text face-to-face meetings
  • 00:07:50
now virtual meeting is obviously a big
  • 00:07:52
part of the current day and age so
  • 00:07:53
    really all about that relationship
  • 00:07:55
building the hustle the grind of meeting
  • 00:07:56
    people and establishing building and
  • 00:07:58
    maintaining relationships and
  • 00:07:59
    representing titans
  • 00:08:00
so i'm going to be a little
  • 00:08:02
stereotypical here but when you're in
  • 00:08:04
college or when i was in college and you
  • 00:08:05
sit back and someone said says you need
  • 00:08:07
to go work in ticket sales i'm going to
  • 00:08:08
    be honest
  • 00:08:09
not my cup of tea it's something i
  • 00:08:11
    didn't want to do
  • 00:08:13
    but i think there's a negative
  • 00:08:14
stereotype to when someone says that you
  • 00:08:16
think you're going to be sitting at a
  • 00:08:17
cubicle 40 hours 40 plus hours a week
  • 00:08:20
and you're never going to be off the
  • 00:08:21
phone you're just going to be calling
  • 00:08:22
people asking them to buy tickets
  • 00:08:24
interrupting their day and i think
  • 00:08:26
that's a negative stereotype that goes
  • 00:08:28
along with ticket sales so how did you
  • 00:08:30
    overcome that negative stereotype and
  • 00:08:32
    truly how different is it
  • 00:08:35
    in your role
  • 00:08:37
you're not just on the phone the entire
  • 00:08:38
day correct and i'm glad you broke up i
  • 00:08:40
know earlier you said ticket sales being
  • 00:08:42
the the way to kind of break your foot
  • 00:08:43
in there kind of create your foot in the
  • 00:08:44
door and sports industry but uh really
  • 00:08:46
it's that's how we look for the titans
  • 00:08:48
we always want to get people there who
  • 00:08:50
were into sales and uh like you said
  • 00:08:51
kind of getting out in college you don't
  • 00:08:53
think hey i want to be in sales when i
  • 00:08:54
grow up but just not not what you think
  • 00:08:56
of as a kid talking about sports but uh
  • 00:08:58
the more you kind of dive into it the
  • 00:08:59
more you get the experience it really
  • 00:09:00
    comes down to
  • 00:09:02
for me personally it was like all right
  • 00:09:03
    learning my skill sets
  • 00:09:05
what am i good at what do i like to do
  • 00:09:07
every day that's connecting with people
  • 00:09:08
let's build those relationships and you
  • 00:09:10
start to realize how well that
  • 00:09:11
translates into the sales world uh and
  • 00:09:14
    that's
  • 00:09:15
you know with your outbound with your
  • 00:09:16
clients with your peers with your uh
  • 00:09:18
your leadership teams with kind of your
  • 00:09:20
employees right there and um you kind of
  • 00:09:22
realize it is more than just cold
  • 00:09:24
calling up the yellow pages every day
  • 00:09:25
and just dialing up and hammering out
  • 00:09:26
100 phone calls a day sure when you get
  • 00:09:28
started whether it's the mining baseball
  • 00:09:30
    days or inside sales programs
  • 00:09:32
don't get me wrong there's a lot of that
  • 00:09:34
    but
  • 00:09:34
kind of knowing what your your end game
  • 00:09:36
is where do you want to be in five 10 15
  • 00:09:39
20 years and kind of knowing that's part
  • 00:09:41
of the process of buying into it there
  • 00:09:42
and using it as learning experiences
  • 00:09:44
putting yourself outside of that comfort
  • 00:09:45
zone and um it turns into more than just
  • 00:09:48
the cold calls the call center type vibe
  • 00:09:50
    it's it's game days it's working with
  • 00:09:52
fan it's seeing people excited after big
  • 00:09:54
wins after tough losses kind of the the
  • 00:09:57
highs the lows it all comes through all
  • 00:09:58
fours in there you know and you touched
  • 00:10:00
a lot on some of the different things
  • 00:10:02
you're like you said you're not just
  • 00:10:03
cold calling you know in your bio you
  • 00:10:05
    all the different local organizations
  • 00:10:07
and you're truly working with the
  • 00:10:08
community there in nashville so on that
  • 00:10:11
part of your job you know what is so
  • 00:10:13
great and so powerful about working with
  • 00:10:15
those local organizations and at the end
  • 00:10:18
    of the day
  • 00:10:19
getting to see these really cool moments
  • 00:10:21
once the lifetime moments for kids or
  • 00:10:23
youth groups or youth football teams
  • 00:10:25
when they're at these games in the fall
  • 00:10:28
yeah no exactly and you know fortunate
  • 00:10:30
enough to work for the nfl team like the
  • 00:10:32
titans in a great city like nashville to
  • 00:10:34
where you know it's the south it's it's
  • 00:10:36
football territory down here we have a
  • 00:10:37
great team uh great ownership great
  • 00:10:39
coaches superstar players now i got here
  • 00:10:42
    in 2019 so
  • 00:10:43
i'd like to kind of joke to some of my
  • 00:10:45
colleagues who were here you know back
  • 00:10:46
in the 2013 14s and those earlier days
  • 00:10:49
where things weren't going so well on
  • 00:10:51
the field but doing what we do off the
  • 00:10:53
field our job is to control the
  • 00:10:54
controllables so that's using that brand
  • 00:10:57
that identity who are we as an
  • 00:10:58
organization as a community partner to
  • 00:11:00
build that trust in the people so that
  • 00:11:02
when we reach out to them they know
  • 00:11:04
we're not just calling because derek
  • 00:11:05
henry's rushed for another 200 yards so
  • 00:11:06
we're calling because they're used to us
  • 00:11:08
calling for years and years and uh you
  • 00:11:10
know we bring value to their
  • 00:11:11
    organization their family their friends
  • 00:11:13
and help create the experience where
  • 00:11:15
they keep coming back to the highs the
  • 00:11:17
lows sure we might get a little bit more
  • 00:11:18
of an earphone when things aren't going
  • 00:11:19
great but they're still there for for
  • 00:11:21
better for worse during the uh the runs
  • 00:11:23
    there and it's that's what it's all
  • 00:11:25
about really kind of making sure that
  • 00:11:26
we're there for the fans and do what we
  • 00:11:28
can obviously uh you can't see my height
  • 00:11:30
right now i'm about five foot nine so i
  • 00:11:31
can't control too much on the field
  • 00:11:33
uh you know you look at your job and you
  • 00:11:35
know you've probably heard the cliche
  • 00:11:36
saying you know you never work a day in
  • 00:11:38
your life if you truly love what you do
  • 00:11:40
um so why do you love going whether it's
  • 00:11:42
you know past couple years just doing a
  • 00:11:44
lot of working from home uh but why do
  • 00:11:46
you love going in the office every day
  • 00:11:48
    talking to all these different
  • 00:11:49
organizations showing up on game day why
  • 00:11:51
do you love your job in sales with the
  • 00:11:53
    titans
  • 00:11:54
    yep
  • 00:11:55
so you know game day is the the front
  • 00:11:57
    center stage so
  • 00:11:59
nfl is only 10 home games per year so
  • 00:12:02
355 other days to where you're not
  • 00:12:04
hosting that home game um but all the
  • 00:12:06
work you do throughout those days the
  • 00:12:07
holidays the long nights the weekends
  • 00:12:09
    the early mornings
  • 00:12:10
everything within it you mentioned it's
  • 00:12:12
it's definitely a lot that goes into it
  • 00:12:14
uh and you really got to have that
  • 00:12:15
passion you got to love what you're
  • 00:12:16
doing otherwise the sports industry is
  • 00:12:18
    definitely getting started and staying
  • 00:12:19
in it it can be a grind so if you're not
  • 00:12:21
into it if you're not to do it we love
  • 00:12:22
every day you're going to burn yourself
  • 00:12:24
    out so um
  • 00:12:25
finding that passion what is it that
  • 00:12:27
matters to you were you like day in day
  • 00:12:28
    out and you mentioned earlier
  • 00:12:30
with the fans and i related to it before
  • 00:12:32
    just
  • 00:12:33
coming to work every day with with
  • 00:12:34
people who you know kind of have your
  • 00:12:36
back and finding that that organization
  • 00:12:38
that kind of fits you best in um all
  • 00:12:40
being on the same page the the you know
  • 00:12:42
the one team one during teamwork the
  • 00:12:43
dreamwork all those cliche sayings right
  • 00:12:45
there uh the people around you is really
  • 00:12:48
what makes the job what it is and makes
  • 00:12:50
those long tolerable hours don't seem as
  • 00:12:52
    long and intolerable
  • 00:12:53
you know you spend more time with the
  • 00:12:55
people you might sit next than you do
  • 00:12:56
with your your family and your friends
  • 00:12:57
because this is the crazy sports role we
  • 00:12:59
all signed up for the reason we all love
  • 00:13:01
it uh the former athlete the
  • 00:13:02
competitiveness of it it's just uh it's
  • 00:13:04
    unlike any other industry really
  • 00:13:06
    i couldn't agree couldn't agree with you
  • 00:13:08
more there for sure um i'm gonna send it
  • 00:13:10
out to nathan nathan's got some
  • 00:13:11
questions he won't ask i don't think we
  • 00:13:13
have any in our youtube comments now the
  • 00:13:14
live chat is filled up would have to be
  • 00:13:16
a bunch of co-workers or or friends or
  • 00:13:18
colleagues because there's a lot of
  • 00:13:20
great comments coming in don't think we
  • 00:13:22
have any questions but i want to send it
  • 00:13:23
    out to nathan
  • 00:13:24
i think you know he's got some he's got
  • 00:13:26
some questions he wants to ask
  • 00:13:28
yeah matt thanks again for being a part
  • 00:13:30
of the program and like jake was saying
  • 00:13:32
uh monitoring this chat over here we
  • 00:13:34
don't have any student questions so
  • 00:13:36
please submit questions whether you're a
  • 00:13:38
student you're a young professional just
  • 00:13:40
    let's dive into matt's career a little
  • 00:13:42
bit more based on the audience questions
  • 00:13:44
as opposed to me or jake but i do have
  • 00:13:46
to say i think you're getting more love
  • 00:13:48
in the chat than probably any other
  • 00:13:49
guest we've ever had so you're doing
  • 00:13:51
something right i'm a little worried
  • 00:13:53
where those comments might say yeah
  • 00:13:55
you can go back after the fact and take
  • 00:13:56
    a look but
  • 00:13:58
    um
  • 00:13:58
i want to ask you and you know we're the
  • 00:14:00
pro football hall of fame you work for
  • 00:14:01
    the tennessee titans that's football
  • 00:14:03
    jake always says we're unapologetically
  • 00:14:05
football here um but looking at your bio
  • 00:14:07
and your background and kind of studying
  • 00:14:09
your linkedin and what you've done
  • 00:14:11
uh it's close to baseball season here
  • 00:14:14
and i see that you started in the minor
  • 00:14:15
league baseball world um can you maybe
  • 00:14:18
speak to the students that are watching
  • 00:14:19
now or may watch this in the future and
  • 00:14:22
just kind of talk about that rich
  • 00:14:23
experience you got working in minor
  • 00:14:25
    league baseball all the different
  • 00:14:27
opportunities that were presented to you
  • 00:14:28
there and how that kind of was a you
  • 00:14:30
know launch pad for what you're doing
  • 00:14:32
now in your career yeah i'm glad you
  • 00:14:34
asked because uh the marley baseball
  • 00:14:36
start is unlike any other uh working in
  • 00:14:38
sports so again looking at my career
  • 00:14:41
press starting rightly baseball then mba
  • 00:14:42
to nfl it's funny to kind of look back
  • 00:14:44
on some of the things i did oh geez 10
  • 00:14:47
years ago now working starting baseball
  • 00:14:48
nine years ago so um it all started kind
  • 00:14:51
of pretty full circle there uh senior
  • 00:14:53
year at rutgers university uh the state
  • 00:14:55
university of new jersey for the fans
  • 00:14:56
out there we uh part of our as a sports
  • 00:15:00
management major part of our requirement
  • 00:15:01
was to get internship within the field
  • 00:15:03
um with for graduations you need your
  • 00:15:05
whatever six nine credit internship in
  • 00:15:07
order within the field to get that
  • 00:15:08
sports management degree um so luckily
  • 00:15:10
enough rutgers was about 45 50 minutes
  • 00:15:13
    from trenton new jersey
  • 00:15:14
which was then the home of the double a
  • 00:15:16
uh you know yankee team at the time so i
  • 00:15:18
had a friend there who had interned
  • 00:15:20
there the previous summer had all good
  • 00:15:22
things to say about you know what it
  • 00:15:24
    looked like you know
  • 00:15:25
again crazy wearing many hats an hour
  • 00:15:27
things like that but um knew that was
  • 00:15:30
the right place to try to try to go for
  • 00:15:31
and get that start so um luckily landed
  • 00:15:34
that first internship there with the
  • 00:15:36
    thunder and
  • 00:15:37
i'm sure like many many of the students
  • 00:15:39
here on this call i didn't know what i
  • 00:15:41
wanted to do i didn't know i wanted to
  • 00:15:42
be in ticket sales or sales or really
  • 00:15:44
anything i just do i kept saying i want
  • 00:15:45
to work in sports when i can grow up so
  • 00:15:47
it's uh i'm four months in graduation
  • 00:15:49
and it's about to be time to grow up and
  • 00:15:50
i still don't know what working in
  • 00:15:51
    sports means so um
  • 00:15:53
a full rotational internship to where
  • 00:15:55
every two three weeks you work with the
  • 00:15:57
    different departments so it's tickets
  • 00:15:59
    out of sponsorship setups marketing
  • 00:16:00
    broadcasting pr
  • 00:16:02
    stadium operations everything within a
  • 00:16:04
any sports that you would think of the
  • 00:16:06
titans the heat anywhere in between
  • 00:16:08
you do it just on a smaller scale in
  • 00:16:10
minor league baseball um and being
  • 00:16:12
moderately baseball as well as your
  • 00:16:13
resources are a bit more limited so
  • 00:16:15
there's not as many carved out
  • 00:16:16
specialists so you while you might have
  • 00:16:17
one title of group sales representatives
  • 00:16:20
you're also the one who's gonna go out
  • 00:16:21
and set up signs on game days and the
  • 00:16:23
full team is out there pulling the tarps
  • 00:16:25
when it's raining pulling them back off
  • 00:16:26
pulling back on rain delays uh taking
  • 00:16:28
part in the in between innings
  • 00:16:30
promotions you're racing against the hot
  • 00:16:32
dog mascot or whatever that thing might
  • 00:16:34
be that night um i can go through and
  • 00:16:36
probably name 40 different game day
  • 00:16:38
duties i might have done anywhere from
  • 00:16:39
being the head janitor on game days to
  • 00:16:42
um sitting back in the outfield
  • 00:16:44
replacing the manual numbers in the
  • 00:16:45
    scoreboard
  • 00:16:46
through a 15-inning game so like it just
  • 00:16:49
humbles you you know and ultimately
  • 00:16:51
you're there to learn you get that
  • 00:16:52
experience and then it gives you the
  • 00:16:53
chance to kind of find what you do like
  • 00:16:56
and for me it happened to be the the
  • 00:16:58
sales the group sales kind of world
  • 00:16:59
    right there so
  • 00:17:01
leading from their internship into is
  • 00:17:02
offering a full-time role within that
  • 00:17:03
group sales entry-level role uh and that
  • 00:17:06
jake related to earlier a lot of that
  • 00:17:08
100 calls a day while supporting the
  • 00:17:10
sales efforts of the group style staff
  • 00:17:12
and learning from them and the
  • 00:17:13
    leadership there
  • 00:17:14
and then one step to another got to work
  • 00:17:16
away kind of through that that group
  • 00:17:18
    sales department at the thunder
  • 00:17:20
and again no matter whether your
  • 00:17:21
internship or group sales manager there
  • 00:17:23
you're still doing every and anything
  • 00:17:25
for crazy hours and uh we'll just say
  • 00:17:27
not not too much return on investment on
  • 00:17:29
those hours when it comes to the
  • 00:17:30
finances but it's it's all part of it
  • 00:17:31
and wouldn't trade it uh for the world
  • 00:17:34
    and
  • 00:17:35
kind of going back to the uh i'm sure
  • 00:17:36
the natural question of the product how
  • 00:17:38
do you sell minor league baseball
  • 00:17:39
    there's
  • 00:17:40
70 something home games a year versus
  • 00:17:42
the nfl um it kind of established that
  • 00:17:44
creativity within you and um relating
  • 00:17:46
    back to building relationships
  • 00:17:48
creating more stuff that's not about
  • 00:17:50
what's happening on the field nobody
  • 00:17:51
goes to a game and trying on tuesday
  • 00:17:52
night to see the prospects of the
  • 00:17:54
yankees you know um so if that helped
  • 00:17:56
answer your question in a long-winded
  • 00:17:58
walk through my four years with trenton
  • 00:17:59
    there
  • 00:18:00
oh yeah i think you did a great job
  • 00:18:02
explaining uh i guess the stuff you were
  • 00:18:05
doing that helped you become a better
  • 00:18:06
salesman now but also just you know you
  • 00:18:09
said you might be head janitor you're
  • 00:18:11
flipping you know the numbers on the
  • 00:18:12
scoreboard those are things you're not
  • 00:18:13
really doing now with the titans but uh
  • 00:18:16
it humbles you it makes you um
  • 00:18:18
really decide what you want to do and if
  • 00:18:20
you want to be in the sports industry so
  • 00:18:22
i think it's a great uh starting point
  • 00:18:24
for anybody that's interested in getting
  • 00:18:26
the sports industry um we've got some
  • 00:18:28
questions coming in now uh but i'm
  • 00:18:30
actually going to go to questions we
  • 00:18:32
have coming in from an elementary class
  • 00:18:34
normally this is college students high
  • 00:18:35
school students that are watching this
  • 00:18:37
but um one of our elementary classes
  • 00:18:39
this is from emilia at creland
  • 00:18:41
elementary she wants to know how many
  • 00:18:43
tickets do you sell per season
  • 00:18:46
and then one of her classmates uh jada
  • 00:18:49
says what's the next step for you
  • 00:18:51
you know group sales right now what's
  • 00:18:53
the next step for you and your career so
  • 00:18:54
how many tickets and then the next step
  • 00:18:56
for you yep so that how many tickets won
  • 00:18:58
i'll answer kind of collectively as a
  • 00:19:00
team as the titans there so our stadium
  • 00:19:02
holds around 69 000 and change uh people
  • 00:19:05
within the game so 10 home games for a
  • 00:19:06
year do the math there that's about 700
  • 00:19:09
000 uh you know tickets or people coming
  • 00:19:11
through nissan stadium um you know
  • 00:19:13
talking full sellouts per game uh
  • 00:19:15
breaking it down a little more our
  • 00:19:17
season ticket member base is you know
  • 00:19:19
probably not 53 to 55 000. hopefully the
  • 00:19:21
comments don't correct me if i'm too off
  • 00:19:23
there but it's around there uh and then
  • 00:19:25
within that remaining whatever might be
  • 00:19:27
    15 14 000 tickets there uh it's on the
  • 00:19:30
the sales team so the service team is
  • 00:19:32
the one who make sure those 53 000 55
  • 00:19:34
000 gets in every year coming back
  • 00:19:37
and then it's awesome to sellers okay
  • 00:19:39
here's how many not empty but unclaimed
  • 00:19:41
seats that we kind of have per year what
  • 00:19:43
are we doing to fill those and that's
  • 00:19:45
our season ticket services i mean i've
  • 00:19:46
seen to get sales team and i'm selling
  • 00:19:48
the the psl the seat licenses to get new
  • 00:19:50
season ticket members in the house or if
  • 00:19:52
    it's
  • 00:19:53
it's one of our various smaller partial
  • 00:19:55
plans to let's maybe something that's
  • 00:19:56
more appealing towards that that younger
  • 00:19:57
fans where they don't want to do the
  • 00:19:59
full 10 games they want the three to
  • 00:20:00
five for how many games that might be to
  • 00:20:02
help fill it up but then um once you get
  • 00:20:04
down to what's left of that about
  • 00:20:06
probably 7 000 or so that's where it
  • 00:20:08
kind of falls more into to my specific
  • 00:20:10
role in our specific team and department
  • 00:20:11
there with the group sales team
  • 00:20:13
and that's pretty much like all right
  • 00:20:14
here's what's left go sell it out uh and
  • 00:20:16
that's where we start there so the uh
  • 00:20:19
the the little breakdown for you nissan
  • 00:20:20
saying how it works and that's what
  • 00:20:21
we're talking about getting all those
  • 00:20:22
    sports leagues and schools and
  • 00:20:23
everything kind of filling in that group
  • 00:20:25
sales kind of programs there um and then
  • 00:20:27
the second question on that one was that
  • 00:20:29
sorry yes so i think you did a great job
  • 00:20:30
kind of explaining the breakdown from
  • 00:20:32
you know season tickets and group sales
  • 00:20:34
and what you're doing but second
  • 00:20:36
question there was from jada and she
  • 00:20:37
said you know what's the next step for
  • 00:20:39
you where are you looking you know your
  • 00:20:41
    quote-unquote five-year plan your
  • 00:20:42
10-year plan as far as your career goes
  • 00:20:45
    and ticket sales
  • 00:20:46
yes certainly so uh you know if they've
  • 00:20:48
been in your group so it's pretty much
  • 00:20:50
my entire career path ever since kind of
  • 00:20:51
coming out of trenton and i'm on a let's
  • 00:20:53
say a pretty good path of where i'm at
  • 00:20:55
right now to keep working myself up uh
  • 00:20:56
within this sales world of this group
  • 00:20:58
sales world and ultimately the business
  • 00:20:59
side of sports so um we like to a few of
  • 00:21:02
us leadership within the titans always
  • 00:21:03
like to say you know kind of have your
  • 00:21:04
eye on the prize in the next five years
  • 00:21:06
but at the same time you always want to
  • 00:21:07
be the best at what you're doing right
  • 00:21:09
    now and recognizing
  • 00:21:10
where you have the room to grow uh where
  • 00:21:12
    your
  • 00:21:13
weaknesses are and not being afraid to
  • 00:21:15
admit it to make sure you're the best
  • 00:21:16
group sales manager for the titans at
  • 00:21:18
that time uh because if you can't do the
  • 00:21:20
role you're now to the fullest your
  • 00:21:22
capabilities just to say that you're
  • 00:21:23
ready for that that next step right
  • 00:21:25
there so whatever title that might be
  • 00:21:27
    the next whatever director senior
  • 00:21:29
director vice president all those things
  • 00:21:30
kind of go off the ladder um i do think
  • 00:21:33
    that
  • 00:21:33
the the skill set and the resources kind
  • 00:21:35
of being provided within the current uh
  • 00:21:37
    team experiences right now is
  • 00:21:39
putting in a good spot to keep working
  • 00:21:41
through there uh being the end of the
  • 00:21:42
day being at that top of that sports
  • 00:21:44
organization on that business side um
  • 00:21:46
    will be the answer
  • 00:21:47
yeah for sure well it's good to hear
  • 00:21:49
that you got a plan and i love how you
  • 00:21:51
    emphasize so
  • 00:21:53
um making sure that you don't get so
  • 00:21:56
caught up in where you want to go that
  • 00:21:58
you forget where you're at right now and
  • 00:21:59
being the best version of yourself and
  • 00:22:01
position that you have currently that's
  • 00:22:03
important i think for our students to
  • 00:22:04
hear because a lot of times you have
  • 00:22:06
    that dream job
  • 00:22:08
and you're not going to get that right
  • 00:22:10
out of college you know right out of
  • 00:22:11
high school you're going to have to work
  • 00:22:12
and kind of climb the ladder a little
  • 00:22:14
bit and you got to make sure that you're
  • 00:22:15
putting your best foot forward with each
  • 00:22:17
of those positions along the way so
  • 00:22:19
that's a great piece of advice i'm going
  • 00:22:20
to send it over to jake for some more
  • 00:22:23
    questions right now but continue
  • 00:22:25
    everyone that's watching continues to
  • 00:22:26
make questions i got something i'm gonna
  • 00:22:28
look through here now but for now it's
  • 00:22:30
    back to jake
  • 00:22:31
awesome thanks nathan yes uh matt and
  • 00:22:33
you know you've talked about your career
  • 00:22:34
so far and everything that you've seen
  • 00:22:37
and how you've changed from baseball to
  • 00:22:38
basketball the football and we know
  • 00:22:41
    sports is an ever evolving
  • 00:22:43
    uh
  • 00:22:45
    organization
  • 00:22:46
thing that we're going to see continue
  • 00:22:48
    to change down the road
  • 00:22:50
but what we like to do here at the pro
  • 00:22:52
football hall of fame is show well what
  • 00:22:54
was it like before we see it it today so
  • 00:22:57
we thought what better way to show maybe
  • 00:22:59
how the ticket game has changed and go
  • 00:23:01
straight live to our museum and talk a
  • 00:23:03
little bit about well what was it like
  • 00:23:05
to go to a game when football started so
  • 00:23:08
what i'm going to do is i'm going to
  • 00:23:09
throw it out to the director of our
  • 00:23:10
youth and education team here at the
  • 00:23:11
hall of fame jerry shockey who's in
  • 00:23:13
front of some of our oldest artifacts
  • 00:23:15
and all this information that we have
  • 00:23:17
here at the pro football hall of fame
  • 00:23:19
all around what matt loves to do every
  • 00:23:21
single day tickets so jerry go ahead and
  • 00:23:22
    take it away
  • 00:23:24
thank you jake uh matt thank you for uh
  • 00:23:26
connecting in with all of our uh
  • 00:23:28
students connecting it all across the
  • 00:23:29
country over uh youtube live and and
  • 00:23:31
it's a little crazy in here actually so
  • 00:23:33
i had people walking in front just a
  • 00:23:34
second ago so this is a good thing no
  • 00:23:36
that's the beautiful thing for us here
  • 00:23:38
at the pro football fan but i want to
  • 00:23:39
welcome you guys to the second floor of
  • 00:23:41
our rotunda here at the pro football
  • 00:23:43
fame it is here that we highlight the
  • 00:23:45
over 100 years of history of
  • 00:23:47
    professional football
  • 00:23:48
    the first floor goes more
  • 00:23:49
chronologically and goes by decade but
  • 00:23:52
up here on the second floor it's more
  • 00:23:54
and more let's find moments uh fantastic
  • 00:23:56
finishes dynasties where we are today
  • 00:23:58
the pioneers of the game uh this space
  • 00:24:01
spends a lot of time honoring the
  • 00:24:03
greatness of men like ernie nevers
  • 00:24:05
red grange um neither of these men
  • 00:24:08
played for the for the tennessee titans
  • 00:24:10
but they were a huge box office draw
  • 00:24:12
when it came to selling tickets
  • 00:24:14
both the chicago bears louis vazquez
  • 00:24:16
went on a barnstorming tour after the
  • 00:24:18
regular season to make more money and
  • 00:24:20
let fans all across the country see
  • 00:24:21
    their stars play
  • 00:24:22
i'm actually next to a photo the
  • 00:24:24
promotional piece used to sell the
  • 00:24:26
tickets you can see there and if you can
  • 00:24:28
imagine i don't know if you guys can
  • 00:24:30
quite see that but i think ticket price
  • 00:24:32
has changed a little bit uh we see
  • 00:24:35
    10 games for 20 dollars that'd be a
  • 00:24:36
special promo for the titans stopping
  • 00:24:38
that right now 10 games for 20 so uh
  • 00:24:42
and then now the way people like matt
  • 00:24:44
sell tickets and definitely the cost of
  • 00:24:45
    tickets has definitely changed but
  • 00:24:47
matt i was just curious with your
  • 00:24:48
experience now uh how you see the field
  • 00:24:51
changing in the future with ticket sales
  • 00:24:53
    and things like that
  • 00:24:56
yeah no absolutely that's a good
  • 00:24:57
question unfortunately no more uh 10 10
  • 00:25:00
games for 20 bucks you know what we do
  • 00:25:01
have some more affordable options versus
  • 00:25:03
what people might think but uh not quite
  • 00:25:05
    there anymore so
  • 00:25:06
our fans probably wish that came back to
  • 00:25:08
our sales reps probably don't want those
  • 00:25:10
    prices to come back
  • 00:25:11
but uh to your question there in terms
  • 00:25:13
of how the the sports experience the
  • 00:25:15
ticketing has growth has changed um
  • 00:25:18
a number of ways like you talk about the
  • 00:25:20
tech pieces when it comes down to
  • 00:25:22
in the old times you just walk up to the
  • 00:25:23
box office you buy your paper ticket you
  • 00:25:25
    walk right in um
  • 00:25:27
and now you guys all know anytime you go
  • 00:25:29
to any event everything's technical it's
  • 00:25:30
mobile it's on your phone it's uh
  • 00:25:32
    digital tickets mobile tickets whatever
  • 00:25:33
kind of following that might be so
  • 00:25:34
that's the obvious one but not as much
  • 00:25:35
in terms of what i do and how i look at
  • 00:25:38
it in terms of how she's my day to day
  • 00:25:40
um and from my perspective i would say
  • 00:25:43
going to a sports game going back to
  • 00:25:45
what if the group styles things it's
  • 00:25:46
it's becoming less and less about what's
  • 00:25:49
happening only on the field from your
  • 00:25:50
seat uh sports games people want to go
  • 00:25:52
to them because it's a social event it's
  • 00:25:55
    a spectacle it's about being the who's
  • 00:25:56
who who's at which games the big games
  • 00:25:58
you want to be a part of that so
  • 00:26:00
what are we doing to make our in-game
  • 00:26:02
    experience our fan experiences even
  • 00:26:04
better than just again just relying on a
  • 00:26:06
big win to get them excited so whether
  • 00:26:08
    that's
  • 00:26:10
getting to the game and engaging with
  • 00:26:11
fans through different promotions or if
  • 00:26:13
it's um you know the different areas we
  • 00:26:15
have the hospitality areas pre-game a
  • 00:26:17
spot for them to socialize with their
  • 00:26:19
friends and um you know have a couple of
  • 00:26:21
drinks for a couple hours before the
  • 00:26:22
game and then even during game you know
  • 00:26:24
what can we do to provide more areas
  • 00:26:25
where it's you're not just locked into
  • 00:26:27
your seat with two people next to you
  • 00:26:28
it's where can you go in the stadium to
  • 00:26:30
watch the game while having some food
  • 00:26:32
some drinks and you know you might look
  • 00:26:33
at the field you might be watching on tv
  • 00:26:34
when the fields see your back somewhat
  • 00:26:36
but that's what the people are kind of
  • 00:26:37
gearing towards the sports world overall
  • 00:26:38
    it's that social experience what's
  • 00:26:40
happening there and how do we keep
  • 00:26:42
    altering
  • 00:26:43
our products what we can do to
  • 00:26:45
again adjust to those times and make
  • 00:26:47
    sure that we're not just
  • 00:26:48
wishing everyone to show up every sunday
  • 00:26:50
70 000 fans show up on time sitting
  • 00:26:52
there seats and nothing else so if
  • 00:26:53
    that's bringing
  • 00:26:54
local vendors to you know the taste of
  • 00:26:56
the town type of things we've done that
  • 00:26:58
in the past couple years everyone's
  • 00:26:59
    favorite restaurants we're getting them
  • 00:27:00
inside of the stadium because those are
  • 00:27:01
the foods they're custom they might not
  • 00:27:03
    want just
  • 00:27:04
the hot dog the popcorn in the soda they
  • 00:27:06
might want the martin's barbecue or the
  • 00:27:07
um you know this local pizza restaurant
  • 00:27:10
um any of the slimming huskies
  • 00:27:12
those kind of some things there i would
  • 00:27:14
say um just making it more special more
  • 00:27:16
unique and then another kind of like
  • 00:27:18
whether it's having a cool photo
  • 00:27:20
backdrop for people to take their their
  • 00:27:22
titans photos and signature things like
  • 00:27:23
that or um providing you know different
  • 00:27:26
in-game music or bigger half-time acts
  • 00:27:29
whatever it can be again to kind of tie
  • 00:27:30
it all in to make it as much about
  • 00:27:33
the full experience and not as much
  • 00:27:34
    about football the whole time
  • 00:27:38
well thank you matt i appreciate it uh
  • 00:27:40
jake i'm gonna send it back to you
  • 00:27:42
awesome thanks jerry thanks for giving
  • 00:27:43
us an inside look there at the hall of
  • 00:27:45
fame you know matt you mentioned uh some
  • 00:27:47
nashville some local foods you know
  • 00:27:49
we've been down there nath and i have
  • 00:27:50
been down there martin's barbecue might
  • 00:27:52
be one of our favorite places we've been
  • 00:27:53
to the entire country one of the best uh
  • 00:27:56
so i just wanted to throw that give it a
  • 00:27:57
little plug uh in there and you you
  • 00:27:59
    mentioned there
  • 00:28:01
how the the ticket sales have changed
  • 00:28:03
from you know your your stub that you
  • 00:28:04
put in a jar and you collected or you
  • 00:28:06
put up on your wall to now everything's
  • 00:28:08
on your phone and all digital and you
  • 00:28:09
know i'm going to ask this question now
  • 00:28:12
i'm going to kind of get into the nft
  • 00:28:14
space now i can guarantee you i have
  • 00:28:16
hardly any knowledge on it and what it
  • 00:28:18
means but you see some of these you know
  • 00:28:21
these digital tickets becoming like like
  • 00:28:23
a token or something you can keep that's
  • 00:28:25
    one of one
  • 00:28:26
    how has somebody
  • 00:28:28
who works on are going to end up trying
  • 00:28:30
to sell these how do you take advantage
  • 00:28:32
of the advancement of technology and new
  • 00:28:34
things like nfts to help you on your
  • 00:28:37
day-to-day you know your day-to-day life
  • 00:28:40
yeah no certainly and that's a big part
  • 00:28:41
of it whether it's nfts or other just
  • 00:28:43
advancements in the detective world so
  • 00:28:46
uh we are actually one of the i don't
  • 00:28:47
want to say we're the only one a few
  • 00:28:48
teams who during our uh playoff games
  • 00:28:50
last year we actually kind of offered
  • 00:28:53
some nfts as a special purchase with a
  • 00:28:55
ticket after the exact number of it so
  • 00:28:56
uh we were one of the first teams to
  • 00:28:58
kind of start dabbling in the nft game
  • 00:29:00
with their ticket um i wasn't too
  • 00:29:02
hands-on directly involved with that so
  • 00:29:04
i don't want to sit here and uh you know
  • 00:29:06
talk about how it worked what it looked
  • 00:29:07
like and all that but uh certainly
  • 00:29:09
    organizationally whether it's in ticket
  • 00:29:11
    sales partnerships our creative teams
  • 00:29:13
marketing anything like that we're we're
  • 00:29:15
keeping an eye on local trends uh local
  • 00:29:17
national worldwide uh and knowing that
  • 00:29:19
we can't just do things the same old way
  • 00:29:20
and that could speak to our social media
  • 00:29:22
teams and i'm sure at one point it was
  • 00:29:24
no social media and just facebook and
  • 00:29:25
then just twitter and then instagram and
  • 00:29:27
uh as we see those shifts to where what
  • 00:29:29
youtube and tick tock are probably two
  • 00:29:31
of the more used ones now nationwide and
  • 00:29:33
i'm sure the students on this caller
  • 00:29:34
that's probably speaking more of their
  • 00:29:35
language um so knowing that across every
  • 00:29:38
    single department you gotta recognize
  • 00:29:40
    where where trends are going
  • 00:29:41
technologically and uh not fighting them
  • 00:29:43
embracing them and the sooner you do
  • 00:29:45
that the more kind of ahead you're gonna
  • 00:29:46
be and from the ticket style side of
  • 00:29:48
    things
  • 00:29:49
we're seeing more tickets than ever
  • 00:29:51
being purchased online we you know our
  • 00:29:52
box office used to always be open for
  • 00:29:54
whatever hours and now it's much more
  • 00:29:55
limited hours sometimes not even open at
  • 00:29:57
all knowing people are buying online or
  • 00:29:58
over the phone or in person um by going
  • 00:30:01
to them uh so what ticket tools are out
  • 00:30:03
there for me from the group side of
  • 00:30:04
    things to
  • 00:30:05
create the let's say less friction as
  • 00:30:07
possible in the purchasing process to
  • 00:30:09
make an easy user experience everyone
  • 00:30:11
needs to shop it online now so why would
  • 00:30:12
tickets really be any different uh but
  • 00:30:14
it's not as simple as just clicking a
  • 00:30:16
little send like it still comes back to
  • 00:30:18
we're talking earlier those the hustle
  • 00:30:19
the ground and then meeting the people
  • 00:30:21
the relationships and then the mobile
  • 00:30:22
tickets kind of the end piece of it
  • 00:30:26
i think you know it's a space that like
  • 00:30:28
i said i have zero clue about i might
  • 00:30:30
even be too old to be out of that that
  • 00:30:33
that frame right now but i think it's
  • 00:30:35
really cool and unique and opens up so
  • 00:30:37
many doors uh down the road uh nathan
  • 00:30:40
sent me a message here he's got a bunch
  • 00:30:41
of good questions that have rolled in so
  • 00:30:43
students thank you for getting those
  • 00:30:44
questions in so i'm gonna throw it over
  • 00:30:46
to him for some of our questions from
  • 00:30:47
the students tune in today yeah jake
  • 00:30:50
thank you so much and and students thank
  • 00:30:52
you for submitting some questions i know
  • 00:30:54
matt's excited to answer these so we'll
  • 00:30:56
just get right to it this is from connor
  • 00:30:58
a student from the university of alabama
  • 00:31:00
and connor's curious in your opinion
  • 00:31:02
matt what's the best way to get your
  • 00:31:04
foot in the door in the sports industry
  • 00:31:06
um suggestions that he could use to
  • 00:31:09
prepare for you know a job interview or
  • 00:31:11
just working in the industry uh in
  • 00:31:13
    general
  • 00:31:14
yeah i think we might have started with
  • 00:31:16
the starlight college you kind of
  • 00:31:17
referenced it earlier with the the
  • 00:31:19
networking they're you know getting out
  • 00:31:20
there meeting people within the field so
  • 00:31:22
uh to break that down even further uh
  • 00:31:24
the best thing that you can do is
  • 00:31:26
connect with as many individuals that
  • 00:31:28
you can uh in anything that you think
  • 00:31:30
you might be interested in as a college
  • 00:31:31
student i understand you might not know
  • 00:31:32
the exact field so be curious you know
  • 00:31:35
go on linkedin look for people within
  • 00:31:37
    different roles of sports organizations
  • 00:31:38
that you might want to get into at all
  • 00:31:40
levels whether that's somebody who's an
  • 00:31:42
intern in that role so a little more
  • 00:31:43
relatable somebody might be that entry
  • 00:31:45
level somebody in that middle management
  • 00:31:46
leadership level uh and just learning
  • 00:31:48
more about what it is that they do day
  • 00:31:50
in and day out uh connecting with them
  • 00:31:52
and going in with you know lists of
  • 00:31:53
questions there so linkedin great tool
  • 00:31:56
for that everyone's you know for the
  • 00:31:57
most part title is right in their their
  • 00:31:58
name their bio so it's pretty uh easy to
  • 00:32:01
find what they do and you know go by
  • 00:32:02
sports team go on their website find
  • 00:32:04
their their title and dive in from there
  • 00:32:06
and then once you do make that that
  • 00:32:08
initial ask whether it's a linkedin
  • 00:32:09
message an email phone call whatever it
  • 00:32:11
    might be
  • 00:32:12
once you if you do take that time to set
  • 00:32:14
aside for that person to talk to them
  • 00:32:16
    learn
  • 00:32:16
go in there with an intention you know
  • 00:32:18
    there's a
  • 00:32:20
you'll have someone in my role might
  • 00:32:21
have a number of people reaching out per
  • 00:32:23
week and you see the difference people
  • 00:32:24
who truly want to know what it is that
  • 00:32:26
you do and learn from you and people are
  • 00:32:28
trying to to kind of check the box so go
  • 00:32:30
in with your questions take advantage of
  • 00:32:31
that time once you get that person on
  • 00:32:33
the phone they're not going to hang up
  • 00:32:34
on you for 10 minutes if you have
  • 00:32:35
questions coming most people are going
  • 00:32:37
to be people about it and look be there
  • 00:32:39
    to help you
  • 00:32:40
so just prepare for anything like that
  • 00:32:41
    within those connections and then
  • 00:32:43
once you find it is what you do and you
  • 00:32:45
    have a good conversation maintaining
  • 00:32:46
    those relationships send them that
  • 00:32:47
linkedin request check in once in a
  • 00:32:49
while if it's a good win like that how's
  • 00:32:51
things going whatever it might be
  • 00:32:54
a lot of this industry is not only you
  • 00:32:56
    know established making relationships
  • 00:32:58
but it's maintaining them growing them
  • 00:32:59
and keeping in touch with them and
  • 00:33:01
    this industry
  • 00:33:02
might be biased but maybe more so than
  • 00:33:04
    others is all about
  • 00:33:05
who you know and who knows you uh from
  • 00:33:08
that angle right there it's uh jake
  • 00:33:10
before we even went live i took a look
  • 00:33:12
through my bio and um he saw a
  • 00:33:13
familiarity in terms of somebody he knew
  • 00:33:15
that worked somewhere else and sure
  • 00:33:17
enough one of my good friends from you
  • 00:33:18
know seven years ago we had a mutual
  • 00:33:20
    friend there and
  • 00:33:21
every place that i've been throughout my
  • 00:33:22
career from internship all the way till
  • 00:33:24
now i've had some form of connection or
  • 00:33:26
    relationship with somebody there or
  • 00:33:28
    somewhat related
  • 00:33:30
    so
  • 00:33:31
the long answer to that is you know
  • 00:33:32
    relationships are important uh
  • 00:33:34
don't take those for granted go out
  • 00:33:36
there and be curious and connect with
  • 00:33:37
    people
  • 00:33:38
yeah 100 and i would encourage the
  • 00:33:40
    students you know don't
  • 00:33:43
don't get discouraged like when you're
  • 00:33:45
out there and you cast a wide net you
  • 00:33:46
know group sales manager we're talking
  • 00:33:48
to matt today i mean there's 32 teams in
  • 00:33:51
the nfl 30 teams in major league
  • 00:33:53
baseball 30 teams in the nba so if
  • 00:33:55
you're just looking at pro sports and
  • 00:33:56
that's not even including hockey and
  • 00:33:57
    soccer
  • 00:33:59
connect with all of them yeah and then
  • 00:34:01
if two or three of them get back to you
  • 00:34:02
now you've got two or three people that
  • 00:34:04
you can network with and really start to
  • 00:34:06
    gain
  • 00:34:07
um some strong connections that can help
  • 00:34:09
you get those internships and entry
  • 00:34:10
    level jobs to get
  • 00:34:12
    the quote-unquote dream job eventually
  • 00:34:15
um because like matt said there's a lot
  • 00:34:17
of people that are busy some people are
  • 00:34:19
better about checking on linkedin than
  • 00:34:20
others you can't get discouraged when
  • 00:34:22
you're trying to utilize something like
  • 00:34:24
    linkedin
  • 00:34:25
    as a networking tool
  • 00:34:27
    that's great advice for sure
  • 00:34:29
next question here from a student
  • 00:34:31
what qualities or attributes do you
  • 00:34:33
    personally look for
  • 00:34:35
when you're sitting across from someone
  • 00:34:36
in an interview when you're looking to
  • 00:34:38
hire a new sales rep or whatever it may
  • 00:34:40
be what are the qualities and attributes
  • 00:34:42
that stand out to you matt
  • 00:34:44
yeah so i'll give a few here
  • 00:34:46
we'll start off with you know and some
  • 00:34:47
might sound obvious but it's you know
  • 00:34:49
    california sometimes not every candidate
  • 00:34:51
might portray these uh these qualities
  • 00:34:53
so one obviously be passionate about
  • 00:34:55
what you're doing talked about earlier
  • 00:34:56
uh getting started not only getting
  • 00:34:58
started but stay in the sports industry
  • 00:34:59
    it's a grind it's it's a lot of work so
  • 00:35:01
if you don't truly like what you're
  • 00:35:02
doing if you're not doing it with an
  • 00:35:03
intention uh you're not going to see
  • 00:35:05
that passion in your work anymore and
  • 00:35:07
you're not going to be about it so try
  • 00:35:09
to find it is whatever it is you decide
  • 00:35:11
    whether it's ticket sales stadium
  • 00:35:12
    operations marketing broadcasting
  • 00:35:14
    journal sports writing journals and
  • 00:35:16
social media try to find ways that you
  • 00:35:17
love what you do and then while doing it
  • 00:35:19
so that's one i would say
  • 00:35:22
    positive attitude um
  • 00:35:24
we spent a lot of hours together so when
  • 00:35:26
i'm when we're looking to bring new
  • 00:35:27
people into our team we know that we
  • 00:35:29
have established the titans a very good
  • 00:35:31
front office culture and we we're with
  • 00:35:33
each other and all at all times of the
  • 00:35:34
day all times of the night and through
  • 00:35:36
holidays and weekends so we want to make
  • 00:35:37
sure there's people that when times are
  • 00:35:39
    tough and
  • 00:35:40
you can't control 70 000 fans at one
  • 00:35:42
time so we know there's always things
  • 00:35:43
that pop up on game days who are the
  • 00:35:45
people that if things are going wrong
  • 00:35:46
they're not going to get down on
  • 00:35:47
    themselves or be
  • 00:35:48
upset or causing a scene throwing a
  • 00:35:50
    tantrum keeping that positive attitude
  • 00:35:52
and um it's a lot easier for us to be
  • 00:35:55
like you know this person kind of
  • 00:35:56
contain their composure they're cool we
  • 00:35:57
like to keep them around and finding
  • 00:35:59
    those people within there
  • 00:36:00
the next one i would say being a team
  • 00:36:02
    player um not being selfish
  • 00:36:04
while sales might be a game of in a day
  • 00:36:06
    you can
  • 00:36:07
    model specifically you can measure
  • 00:36:08
people based on numbers sometimes the
  • 00:36:10
    immeasurable things are even more
  • 00:36:11
important when looking for that person
  • 00:36:13
    so um
  • 00:36:14
having that team play while you might
  • 00:36:15
have your own number you have a
  • 00:36:16
    department number
  • 00:36:18
we need to all be you know
  • 00:36:20
respectful to each other work well
  • 00:36:21
together and it's always all hands on
  • 00:36:23
deck ever for a lot of things there um
  • 00:36:26
    and then
  • 00:36:27
you know the outgoing the drive the hard
  • 00:36:29
working we like to look for you know
  • 00:36:31
people who have creative minds might
  • 00:36:32
think a little bit differently along
  • 00:36:33
those a lot of the uh a lot of trends
  • 00:36:35
you might hear but definitely the those
  • 00:36:36
are the big hitters i would say
  • 00:36:39
yeah i think you've touched on a lot of
  • 00:36:41
them there's little things you can do to
  • 00:36:43
stand out with um even what jake did you
  • 00:36:45
know looking at the person you're about
  • 00:36:47
to interview with look at their bio
  • 00:36:49
learn a little bit about them so now
  • 00:36:50
when you're interviewing it becomes more
  • 00:36:52
of conversation don't forget to send
  • 00:36:54
    thank yous
  • 00:36:55
shout out to austin pasco we've had him
  • 00:36:57
on the show before from the saints he's
  • 00:36:59
    so adamant about those personal
  • 00:37:01
handwritten thank you letters those go a
  • 00:37:03
long way so there's you know not only
  • 00:37:05
    characteristics but there's physical
  • 00:37:07
    tangible things you can do
  • 00:37:08
to separate yourself from others that uh
  • 00:37:10
you might be competing against when
  • 00:37:12
you're interviewing for that job i think
  • 00:37:14
you you did a good job you have someone
  • 00:37:16
    else that out there matt
  • 00:37:17
no i was gonna say the hammered no thing
  • 00:37:19
always a great talk so he said they'll
  • 00:37:20
stand out anyone could shoot over a
  • 00:37:21
quick email you know it's a lot quicker
  • 00:37:23
a lot easier but uh in a day and age
  • 00:37:25
we're not many people probably know how
  • 00:37:26
to how to uh put a stamp on an envelope
  • 00:37:28
um which has a little more of a personal
  • 00:37:29
touch to it there yeah 100 for sure um
  • 00:37:33
next question kind of unique this is
  • 00:37:34
from a student from spelman so you might
  • 00:37:37
have to think back to the classes you
  • 00:37:39
took in college matt yeah reference this
  • 00:37:41
because i don't think it's really in the
  • 00:37:43
    sales world unless
  • 00:37:44
i misunderstand the sales world but
  • 00:37:46
student from spelman uh biology major
  • 00:37:49
junior athletic training is of interest
  • 00:37:52
to them what uh advice would you give
  • 00:37:54
someone that's trying to get into
  • 00:37:55
athletic training what's the route to
  • 00:37:56
kind of take and the people they should
  • 00:37:58
be reaching out to yeah i mean again
  • 00:38:00
obviously outside of sales work i think
  • 00:38:01
the same things really still apply uh
  • 00:38:02
when it comes down to going out and
  • 00:38:04
    finding people within
  • 00:38:06
those fields um with athletic training
  • 00:38:08
whether it's if you want to do it from a
  • 00:38:10
practice standpoint within a team an
  • 00:38:11
organization all the above you know find
  • 00:38:14
people who are in those roles i'm sure
  • 00:38:15
they're still actively on linkedin you
  • 00:38:16
can find their practice their names
  • 00:38:17
online and reach out connect with them
  • 00:38:19
learn from them see what advice they can
  • 00:38:21
give you in terms of how they get into
  • 00:38:23
the industry if they can go back and do
  • 00:38:24
things differently what would that be
  • 00:38:26
what advice would they have for their
  • 00:38:27
you know their past self um along those
  • 00:38:30
    and
  • 00:38:31
and again sales or not i think the same
  • 00:38:32
thing still apply stay in touch with
  • 00:38:33
    that person keeping those relationships
  • 00:38:36
open and building and um it's
  • 00:38:38
you can't really over emphasize the
  • 00:38:40
importance of you know freaking out
  • 00:38:42
people while you can before you can
  • 00:38:43
before you get out of school now when
  • 00:38:44
you have no relationships in the field
  • 00:38:46
you never know who's going to be where
  • 00:38:48
    in the future
  • 00:38:49
so definitely go for that learn as much
  • 00:38:51
    if there's any volunteer opportunities
  • 00:38:53
    go for it you know
  • 00:38:55
yeah another great piece of advice you
  • 00:38:57
you mentioned kind of the built-in
  • 00:38:59
network you have when you're in school
  • 00:39:01
and you made me think of it is don't be
  • 00:39:04
afraid to network with your classmates
  • 00:39:06
because you never know where they're
  • 00:39:07
going to end up someday make sure you
  • 00:39:09
    have great relationships with your
  • 00:39:10
professors because you never know who
  • 00:39:11
they know in the industry um i'm sure
  • 00:39:14
    they tell you that but
  • 00:39:15
we're all sitting here jake matt myself
  • 00:39:18
we all did the sport management major we
  • 00:39:20
kind of did that route we heard those
  • 00:39:21
things that's from our professors and
  • 00:39:23
now that we're in the industry it's like
  • 00:39:25
oh yeah they were right those things
  • 00:39:26
that they were saying those those are
  • 00:39:28
you know great pieces of advice i got
  • 00:39:30
two more questions from our students and
  • 00:39:31
then i'll send it back to jake uh it'll
  • 00:39:33
be it'll be all for me but um
  • 00:39:36
tyler a student from howard university
  • 00:39:38
said uh how important are the
  • 00:39:40
    connections that you're building
  • 00:39:42
internally whether you know you get the
  • 00:39:44
opportunity to build a connection with a
  • 00:39:45
player or you know someone else in the
  • 00:39:47
organization that maybe has a position
  • 00:39:49
above you on the organizational chart
  • 00:39:51
how important are those connections uh
  • 00:39:53
to you and your career and how you try
  • 00:39:55
to move up in the sport uh management
  • 00:39:57
    world
  • 00:39:58
yeah is my uh is my connection good if
  • 00:40:00
someone was unstable for a minute there
  • 00:40:01
if i broke up can you guys hear me yeah
  • 00:40:03
i can still hear you you're good okay
  • 00:40:04
all right so uh with that i'll uh i'll
  • 00:40:07
give that a two part to start you know
  • 00:40:08
with the the player side things working
  • 00:40:09
in sports a lot of people do kind of
  • 00:40:11
think that it is heavy involved with the
  • 00:40:13
the player side of things and you know
  • 00:40:14
being on the field the coaches see
  • 00:40:16
people around i'll be honestly working
  • 00:40:17
in sports for however many years there's
  • 00:40:19
not too much play interaction you might
  • 00:40:20
see them at events here and there um so
  • 00:40:22
while it is cool when it does happen uh
  • 00:40:24
in that sales roles those business roles
  • 00:40:25
it it's not a super big piece of kind of
  • 00:40:27
what it is that you do um it's more
  • 00:40:28
again it's about selling that experience
  • 00:40:30
there to kind of paint the picture on
  • 00:40:31
that but the internal relationships um
  • 00:40:34
will go even obviously within department
  • 00:40:36
it's obvious i won't spend too much time
  • 00:40:37
on that but within other departments you
  • 00:40:39
    know once you
  • 00:40:41
sports teams all work together everyone
  • 00:40:42
has their own departments their own kind
  • 00:40:44
of roles right there but collectively
  • 00:40:46
yeah the end game is to portray the
  • 00:40:47
titans organization as uh this you know
  • 00:40:49
the elite community partner and it's
  • 00:40:51
provide the best game day experience and
  • 00:40:52
in order to do that with all your
  • 00:40:54
clients and all your people it's you
  • 00:40:55
rely on tons of others across other
  • 00:40:57
    departments so
  • 00:40:58
anytime it is that you're working your
  • 00:41:00
day in day out whether you're working
  • 00:41:01
    with somebody directly indirectly
  • 00:41:03
always put your best foot forward your
  • 00:41:05
    best effort your positive attitude
  • 00:41:06
    because
  • 00:41:07
you never know who is working uh who is
  • 00:41:10
watching you and kind of their
  • 00:41:11
impression on you know how it is that
  • 00:41:13
you work and so many times to where
  • 00:41:15
somebody who i might not have spoken
  • 00:41:16
with too much but i've you know worked
  • 00:41:17
the same buildings over two years next
  • 00:41:19
you know they're they're the one you
  • 00:41:21
know putting you off and putting the
  • 00:41:22
good word about your next gig or you're
  • 00:41:24
you know getting up to that next
  • 00:41:25
promotion there so um always go forward
  • 00:41:28
there and you can you never know who
  • 00:41:29
you'll see when when they can make that
  • 00:41:31
introduction for you at that next place
  • 00:41:32
and again just really be on the same
  • 00:41:34
page each other as a team in an
  • 00:41:35
    organization
  • 00:41:36
yeah great advice there um for sure last
  • 00:41:40
question from our students is from
  • 00:41:42
khalil a student from sacramento state
  • 00:41:44
university um curious so we've talked a
  • 00:41:47
lot about sales today we even touched on
  • 00:41:49
athletic training there briefly um if
  • 00:41:51
    you're a business you're a sport
  • 00:41:53
    management student kahlil's curious okay
  • 00:41:55
i heard you you can do sales what else
  • 00:41:58
    can you do
  • 00:41:59
with that type of degree what i mean
  • 00:42:01
you're going into work every day in
  • 00:42:02
nashville with the titans what what
  • 00:42:04
other departments are you walking past
  • 00:42:06
each day that could be opportunities for
  • 00:42:08
our students that are watching yeah no
  • 00:42:10
great question absolutely so within i'll
  • 00:42:12
just start naming a bunch of different
  • 00:42:13
parts within it within the titans and
  • 00:42:15
then i talked from a pro sports team's
  • 00:42:16
perspective there so you know you have
  • 00:42:18
your your sales so within their tickets
  • 00:42:20
out so group sales season ticket sales
  • 00:42:22
premium sell selling your your luxury
  • 00:42:24
suites and your you know high-end
  • 00:42:25
hospitality areas um and then within
  • 00:42:28
that you know your partnership sells so
  • 00:42:30
that's your you know your nissan
  • 00:42:32
    stadiums your bridgestones your although
  • 00:42:34
when you go to games everything kind of
  • 00:42:35
you see within a stadium or arena all
  • 00:42:38
that people selling kind of that
  • 00:42:39
    advertising within the stadium within
  • 00:42:41
    different social media
  • 00:42:43
    pays there
  • 00:42:44
and all that so that's the kind of the
  • 00:42:46
sales aspect of it uh to every sales
  • 00:42:48
    role there's a service role so that's
  • 00:42:49
    customer service once people
  • 00:42:51
on the south side kind of get them in
  • 00:42:53
it's on the new department the servicing
  • 00:42:55
department to kind of keep them happy
  • 00:42:57
    they're answering the day-to-day
  • 00:42:58
    questions fulfill the obligations of
  • 00:43:00
what it is that sales person kind of
  • 00:43:01
sold them on so that's a big part of
  • 00:43:03
customer service from the ticketing from
  • 00:43:04
    the premium from the corporate
  • 00:43:05
    partnership standpoint
  • 00:43:07
uh and then branching off away from the
  • 00:43:09
sales service side of things uh you know
  • 00:43:11
    you have your marketing departments
  • 00:43:12
    creating different events throughout the
  • 00:43:13
community how do we connect with not
  • 00:43:15
your non-typical titans fans what can we
  • 00:43:17
do that's not just football uh it was
  • 00:43:20
you know hosting different watch parties
  • 00:43:21
or um doing a yoga event on the field or
  • 00:43:25
showing up to different uh whether it's
  • 00:43:28
you know parades or kids days and just
  • 00:43:30
having a table there bringing the mascot
  • 00:43:31
out bringing the titans cheer team out
  • 00:43:34
so uh marketing is kind of a wide range
  • 00:43:36
net there's a lot within their social
  • 00:43:37
media always a popular one especially
  • 00:43:39
with students these days kind of looking
  • 00:43:41
to learn more about that we have a full
  • 00:43:43
full team of social media specialists um
  • 00:43:45
all kind of one person got overseas and
  • 00:43:46
then a few within the department kind of
  • 00:43:48
handling each account and um having
  • 00:43:50
strategy behind that why they do certain
  • 00:43:52
thing at certain times why they post
  • 00:43:53
certain things on different platforms so
  • 00:43:55
    big one there then
  • 00:43:57
you know then we'll go into stadium
  • 00:43:59
operations fan experience so while we're
  • 00:44:02
all the ones looking to bring as many
  • 00:44:03
people as possible and dealing with the
  • 00:44:04
    individual relationships
  • 00:44:06
you know there's a full team of people
  • 00:44:08
making sure that stadium is ready to
  • 00:44:09
roll parking lots are open the timing of
  • 00:44:11
this deal with the vendors load in
  • 00:44:12
loadout uh then on the team side of
  • 00:44:15
things the team traveled all we talked
  • 00:44:16
    about earlier athletic training the
  • 00:44:18
player operations um so many different
  • 00:44:21
    kind of categories there broadcasting
  • 00:44:22
public relations um a team like the
  • 00:44:25
    titans is such a
  • 00:44:26
valued you know a logo it's it's it
  • 00:44:29
stands out to people so you always want
  • 00:44:30
to have people who are pros at how it is
  • 00:44:32
to represent titans how to speak on
  • 00:44:34
behalf of them and understanding the
  • 00:44:35
mission of the organization for training
  • 00:44:37
at the public uh community impact uh
  • 00:44:39
probably one of the biggest ones in
  • 00:44:40
terms of um what we try to
  • 00:44:43
serve our local community here that's
  • 00:44:45
getting out there we are as a staff
  • 00:44:47
we'll go out and do different volunteer
  • 00:44:49
opportunities when we have those crazy
  • 00:44:50
    tornadoes here
  • 00:44:52
a couple years back we full team out
  • 00:44:54
    there
  • 00:44:54
front office staff you know coaches
  • 00:44:56
players gm everybody out there in our
  • 00:44:58
    communities anytime something like that
  • 00:44:59
    happens
  • 00:45:00
how can we have people lean on us beyond
  • 00:45:02
just providing those big wins on sundays
  • 00:45:04
so that's that's a few right there but
  • 00:45:07
    again really
  • 00:45:08
for anyone that on you know how to
  • 00:45:10
find other departments or things that
  • 00:45:12
exist in a sports team pull up any
  • 00:45:14
    sports team website somewhere within
  • 00:45:15
there whether it's under the roster tab
  • 00:45:17
or the stadium name tab there's going to
  • 00:45:19
be a little link that's going to say
  • 00:45:20
like front office staff or you know
  • 00:45:22
anything along those lines and you click
  • 00:45:23
on there and it's going to have a full
  • 00:45:24
list of people it's going to have every
  • 00:45:26
single department broken down by title
  • 00:45:28
and then each person under that what
  • 00:45:30
their role is and it's gonna really
  • 00:45:32
spell it all out for you so there's if
  • 00:45:33
the resources are there in terms of
  • 00:45:35
    finding those names and departments
  • 00:45:37
people within them their names their
  • 00:45:38
role and everything um so it's
  • 00:45:40
definitely a great way to kind of go and
  • 00:45:41
browse around and then dive deeper from
  • 00:45:43
    there
  • 00:45:44
yeah for sure i love how at the end you
  • 00:45:45
gave the advice to just go to the team
  • 00:45:47
    websites yeah the staff directory's
  • 00:45:49
gonna be there you know you can find it
  • 00:45:51
i'm sure if you just google tennessee
  • 00:45:53
titan staff director it'll take you
  • 00:45:54
straight to the page um and that's a
  • 00:45:56
great way if you're a student and you're
  • 00:45:58
like i don't know what i want to do yet
  • 00:46:00
you can go on there and you can see i
  • 00:46:02
mean matt just rattled off 20 probably
  • 00:46:04
    plus different departments but there's
  • 00:46:06
so much more out there you can see all
  • 00:46:08
the different opportunities and you go
  • 00:46:10
oh social media oh football ops this
  • 00:46:12
sounds interesting and then you start
  • 00:46:13
that networking process find some of
  • 00:46:15
those people talk to them set up that
  • 00:46:17
quick 15-minute zoom call or whatever it
  • 00:46:19
may be ask some questions over an email
  • 00:46:22
    um
  • 00:46:23
that's how you build the network that's
  • 00:46:24
how you get your foot in the door
  • 00:46:26
so that you can get the job that you
  • 00:46:28
want someday so matt thank you so much
  • 00:46:30
for rattling all those those different
  • 00:46:32
careers off i know the students
  • 00:46:33
appreciate that and i'm sure jake
  • 00:46:35
probably has another couple of questions
  • 00:46:36
for you but on behalf of myself and the
  • 00:46:38
students thank you man for being a part
  • 00:46:40
of the program with us today absolutely
  • 00:46:41
    thanks nathan
  • 00:46:42
yes thanks thanks nathan those students
  • 00:46:44
go through some awesome questions matt
  • 00:46:46
had some awesome insight there and like
  • 00:46:47
nathan got time here for a few more and
  • 00:46:49
i always like to ask this question you
  • 00:46:51
know we talk so much about what you do
  • 00:46:52
inside the office uh but but you know i
  • 00:46:55
know nathan knows working in sports
  • 00:46:58
there are some pretty cool things you
  • 00:47:00
get to be a part of that not a lot of
  • 00:47:01
other people get the chance to so
  • 00:47:03
when your career is over you're backing
  • 00:47:05
your lazy boy at home all retired what
  • 00:47:06
is that one event that you've been to or
  • 00:47:09
been a part of or game you remember that
  • 00:47:11
when you sit back in your in your
  • 00:47:13
recliner at the end of your career you
  • 00:47:14
go man i can't believe i was there what
  • 00:47:17
what so far would that would that game
  • 00:47:19
that moment be for you yeah i'll just
  • 00:47:21
spit a few out that i can think off top
  • 00:47:22
of mind here at nine celery ranking one
  • 00:47:24
through three um let's see honestly one
  • 00:47:27
    of
  • 00:47:28
a couple of the titans just most
  • 00:47:29
recently the crazy monday night win
  • 00:47:30
versus the bills this year the goal line
  • 00:47:32
stand josh allen gets stuff there and
  • 00:47:33
they go on to kind of walk off win on
  • 00:47:36
defense that one was awesome um
  • 00:47:39
let's see here and then we'll throw
  • 00:47:40
another one working at the orange bowl
  • 00:47:42
that one year kind of working in that
  • 00:47:44
that very high-end game or if it was a
  • 00:47:46
    two-verse kylie murray semi-final game
  • 00:47:48
and also kind of seeing two big-name
  • 00:47:49
college teams going on at crazy fan
  • 00:47:51
bases atmosphere like no other uh back
  • 00:47:53
    at the heat
  • 00:47:55
when dwyane wade left the heat
  • 00:47:57
went through whatever cycles he went
  • 00:47:59
through the bulls the cavs before
  • 00:48:00
ultimately coming back i think it was
  • 00:48:02
his first full game back hit a
  • 00:48:03
    game-winning shot
  • 00:48:05
in february so the place is going
  • 00:48:06
    absolutely nuts for that um
  • 00:48:08
and then a number of others and then one
  • 00:48:11
with the titans not at a home game uh in
  • 00:48:13
    2019 when we were the
  • 00:48:16
kind of that underdog story of barely
  • 00:48:17
getting to play off that nine and 17
  • 00:48:19
limping in and all of a sudden we're
  • 00:48:20
making this run through the afc and
  • 00:48:21
    we're
  • 00:48:22
knocking off the number one seed lamar
  • 00:48:24
jack or patriots first picking off tom
  • 00:48:26
brady to end the game there and uh
  • 00:48:28
beating lamar jackson and going to
  • 00:48:29
kansas city ultimate losing that one but
  • 00:48:31
that playoff run we didn't host any of
  • 00:48:33
those home playoff games but just like
  • 00:48:35
the watch parties we'll throw for our
  • 00:48:36
fans our season ticket members and our
  • 00:48:38
top clients and uh being with you know
  • 00:48:40
all again talk about earlier all the
  • 00:48:42
people you spend all these hours with
  • 00:48:43
kind of being with them side by side to
  • 00:48:44
celebrate those things in all those
  • 00:48:46
moments right there the reason why
  • 00:48:47
they're all kind of so special is like
  • 00:48:49
i could tell you who i was standing next
  • 00:48:50
to at each of those things and what we
  • 00:48:52
were doing jumping around going crazy on
  • 00:48:54
the platform and uh whether it's to the
  • 00:48:55
watch part things like that so it all
  • 00:48:57
really does come back to having those
  • 00:48:58
    people around you remembering
  • 00:49:00
probably those moments because of what
  • 00:49:02
    was actually not necessarily the
  • 00:49:03
craziest moment on the field it just
  • 00:49:04
happened to work out that way yeah
  • 00:49:05
absolutely uh another cool thing i like
  • 00:49:07
to touch on you know sports is so unique
  • 00:49:10
yes it's like every other organization
  • 00:49:12
but there's a whole football side to it
  • 00:49:14
too and you know the football side is
  • 00:49:16
    obviously the prominent one that
  • 00:49:17
everybody sees on tv they see the
  • 00:49:19
stories about and then the business side
  • 00:49:21
kind of takes that back seat but both
  • 00:49:22
work so well and so in tune together and
  • 00:49:25
i always like when we talk to folks from
  • 00:49:27
the tennessee titans got a great
  • 00:49:28
relationship with with your staff and
  • 00:49:30
um as an ohio state fan we got to talk
  • 00:49:32
about mike rabel uh coming in head coach
  • 00:49:34
    polarizing guy player first guy
  • 00:49:37
always brings the intensity how do you
  • 00:49:39
see that that theme that he creates with
  • 00:49:42
the football team kind of spill over to
  • 00:49:44
the business side and how does that
  • 00:49:45
relationship work yeah no i think that's
  • 00:49:48
a great question you couldn't be more
  • 00:49:49
right i mean it starts even above him
  • 00:49:51
above rainbow rabble fits it perfectly
  • 00:49:52
he's the guy that everyone sees but
  • 00:49:54
his that's a reflection of our whole
  • 00:49:56
    organization top to bottom football
  • 00:49:57
business non-stop and it goes up to
  • 00:49:59
ownership uh amy adam strunk our
  • 00:50:01
majority owner she really started taking
  • 00:50:03
the reins in 2015 around the past few
  • 00:50:06
years all the changes we've seen
  • 00:50:08
off the field as a business and then
  • 00:50:10
really on the field it spilled over as
  • 00:50:12
well with the hiring of john robinson
  • 00:50:14
who brought in mike frable um with him
  • 00:50:16
and those two guys along with amy our
  • 00:50:18
    owner uh really
  • 00:50:20
put the standard of all right here's our
  • 00:50:21
team culture i don't care if you're the
  • 00:50:23
starting running back i don't care if
  • 00:50:24
    you're alignment i don't care if you're
  • 00:50:25
    selling tickets i don't think you're
  • 00:50:26
setting up the cones outside the stadium
  • 00:50:28
this is what we're all about uh and
  • 00:50:29
holding people kind of to that standard
  • 00:50:31
    so um
  • 00:50:32
it does work out so well it's so obvious
  • 00:50:34
when you see it from brabel of that that
  • 00:50:36
no bs strictly business we're here to
  • 00:50:38
win type of thing or a winning
  • 00:50:39
    organization
  • 00:50:40
and again you can't control what's
  • 00:50:41
happening on the field but having that
  • 00:50:42
mindset we're going to win off the field
  • 00:50:44
too no matter what happens on sunday
  • 00:50:46
like we're going to do things the right
  • 00:50:47
way with the right integrity and for the
  • 00:50:49
right reasons uh and that's just a kind
  • 00:50:52
of an all-in tie-in top to bottom so the
  • 00:50:54
behind the scenes be on the field and
  • 00:50:56
kind of that leadership from the top
  • 00:50:57
    down
  • 00:50:58
and the special thing about that is you
  • 00:51:00
can learn so much from that so you look
  • 00:51:02
at the sport of football and you know
  • 00:51:03
you're involved in it every day you're
  • 00:51:05
    with an nfl organization you're
  • 00:51:07
obviously a fan of the game so seeing
  • 00:51:10
the game of football from such a
  • 00:51:11
    different perspective as myself or
  • 00:51:13
somebody who might be a fan watching it
  • 00:51:15
    on tv
  • 00:51:16
what do you feel the game of football
  • 00:51:17
can teach those who are fans of it play
  • 00:51:20
it watch it on tv what are those life
  • 00:51:21
lessons you believe the game of football
  • 00:51:23
teaches yeah uh a lot into the the
  • 00:51:26
passion the discipline the hard work the
  • 00:51:27
teamwork stuff there uh that all spills
  • 00:51:30
over into your everyday life whether you
  • 00:51:31
    become a player or not
  • 00:51:33
if you're not dedicated to your crafting
  • 00:51:35
always looking to get better and learn
  • 00:51:36
from others around you and put in the
  • 00:51:38
    extra time and um
  • 00:51:40
    establish those relationships with
  • 00:51:42
others and it's not just salesworks
  • 00:51:43
    relationships it's the o-line working
  • 00:51:45
together to make sure that donna hill
  • 00:51:46
stays protected and make sure that holds
  • 00:51:47
big enough for henry to run through
  • 00:51:49
it really it's in every aspect of life
  • 00:51:51
right there football is just a good way
  • 00:51:52
for people to to see it um but pull it
  • 00:51:54
away from there yes you gotta love what
  • 00:51:57
you do you gotta be willing to sacrifice
  • 00:51:58
for others and uh really go after and
  • 00:52:00
just have fun with it too you know at
  • 00:52:02
the same time it is it is business it's
  • 00:52:04
you know your career everything right
  • 00:52:06
there but you're in this game for a
  • 00:52:07
reason it's because you love to compete
  • 00:52:09
you love sports and you have to kind of
  • 00:52:10
be around those cool experiences too so
  • 00:52:12
while we put a lot of emphasis on the
  • 00:52:14
    you know
  • 00:52:15
make the hundred calls this that grind
  • 00:52:17
no stop you know always be out there
  • 00:52:19
networking uh it's fun so don't take a
  • 00:52:21
step back once a while kind of embrace
  • 00:52:23
what's kind of going on around you uh so
  • 00:52:24
you will have those experiences to kind
  • 00:52:26
    of remember look back on
  • 00:52:28
and how do you take that those lessons
  • 00:52:30
right there that you just talked about
  • 00:52:31
and apply them to your life or your job
  • 00:52:34
or your day-to-day office life how not
  • 00:52:37
    only within the organization because
  • 00:52:39
there's such a great relationship there
  • 00:52:40
we already talked about that but as a
  • 00:52:42
student who might play a sport or or
  • 00:52:44
know of these values how do you take
  • 00:52:46
them and then apply them to what you do
  • 00:52:48
you know off the field on a day-to-day
  • 00:52:50
    basis
  • 00:52:51
yeah i mean you do kind of notice it uh
  • 00:52:53
that once you kind of look a little
  • 00:52:55
older a little more i guess wise and
  • 00:52:56
kind of looking around yourself and
  • 00:52:58
doing what you do in the office kind of
  • 00:52:59
in your role in a sales role where your
  • 00:53:01
job is to go out and maintain and build
  • 00:53:03
and start and really shift you look
  • 00:53:04
    around and
  • 00:53:05
then you kind of realize oh i got a lot
  • 00:53:06
of great friends around me still and a
  • 00:53:08
lot of people i keep in touch with that
  • 00:53:09
you talked about earlier our friends
  • 00:53:10
from i haven't seen in five years to
  • 00:53:12
still stay in touch with brianna harris
  • 00:53:13
as you mentioned earlier just because it
  • 00:53:15
kind of becomes ingrained in who you are
  • 00:53:16
what you're kind of putting in
  • 00:53:18
    into your professional life your
  • 00:53:19
personal life and if you could find what
  • 00:53:20
    it is that
  • 00:53:22
you could be kind of who you are in your
  • 00:53:24
personal life and allow that to
  • 00:53:26
drive your success in your professional
  • 00:53:27
life uh that's when things start kind of
  • 00:53:29
getting easy and having fun and i always
  • 00:53:31
like to use a piece of advice i received
  • 00:53:33
from my first manager with the heat
  • 00:53:36
uh he kind of saw that and
  • 00:53:37
when i first got there he was i was
  • 00:53:39
miley basically he was coming and
  • 00:53:40
grinding out phone calls picking up the
  • 00:53:42
phone billboard he's like all right you
  • 00:53:43
got to take a step back because i see
  • 00:53:44
you when you're not at your desk by the
  • 00:53:46
phone i see you outside of the office i
  • 00:53:47
see you doing this how do you get that
  • 00:53:49
person to be that person right here and
  • 00:53:50
you're going to kill it uh his his exact
  • 00:53:52
line was don't be mad be mangled because
  • 00:53:54
everyone calls my last name so uh that
  • 00:53:57
was kind of his his coach me there
  • 00:53:58
that's one thing that kind of stuck with
  • 00:53:59
me and uh since then it kind of turned
  • 00:54:01
it more into a fun day-to-day thing and
  • 00:54:04
less about taking things so seriously
  • 00:54:05
but while still putting the work
  • 00:54:07
a lot of the comments make a lot of
  • 00:54:08
sense now that that people call you
  • 00:54:10
mango they're starting to make a little
  • 00:54:11
    bit of sense
  • 00:54:14
and you know that's one great piece of
  • 00:54:16
advice you've given so many great pieces
  • 00:54:17
of advice whether it's you know about
  • 00:54:19
you know life as a ticket life and
  • 00:54:21
    ticket sales or
  • 00:54:23
    building a network building
  • 00:54:24
relationships but if we can sum
  • 00:54:26
everything up today kind of what's that
  • 00:54:28
one final piece of advice you want
  • 00:54:30
students watching students are going to
  • 00:54:31
watch this six months from now who might
  • 00:54:33
just catch it on youtube by happenstance
  • 00:54:35
what's that one piece of advice you want
  • 00:54:37
somebody to walk away with today
  • 00:54:40
yep i would say i'll kind of tie into
  • 00:54:41
kind of a three pronged thing with one
  • 00:54:43
so it's going to be the relationships
  • 00:54:44
    don't underestimate the value of
  • 00:54:45
    relationships they're super important go
  • 00:54:47
out there establish them don't be afraid
  • 00:54:49
    grow them
  • 00:54:50
and be curious find it is be curious now
  • 00:54:53
go out there reach out to as many people
  • 00:54:54
as you need to to find what it is that
  • 00:54:57
    what you want to do
  • 00:54:58
volunteer get involved it's just and
  • 00:55:00
that's all going to help each other the
  • 00:55:01
more you volunteer the more you reach
  • 00:55:03
out to people and learn the more you'll
  • 00:55:05
    start building those relationships and
  • 00:55:06
put together and that's ultimately what
  • 00:55:07
you find what you're passionate about
  • 00:55:09
which kind of that third piece uh there
  • 00:55:11
    of it is
  • 00:55:12
find what is passionate and work for
  • 00:55:13
that because it's again you're gonna be
  • 00:55:15
doing it day in and day out for for a
  • 00:55:17
long time so you don't wanna have
  • 00:55:18
something that you don't really believe
  • 00:55:19
in and have fun doing so those three
  • 00:55:21
kind of tie in together well i like to
  • 00:55:22
    give that advice
  • 00:55:24
i think that's a great way to wrap up
  • 00:55:25
this installment of the pro football
  • 00:55:26
hall of fame before the snap series
  • 00:55:28
