- 00:02:04it's relatable so far

- 00:05:52can make out those lyrics easily but
- 00:05:54this
- 00:05:55i can't unless i'm following the words
- 00:05:57so i'm going to pull it up here

- 00:06:26celebrating justice for all
- 00:06:29i begin to see why the
- 00:06:33intro that was a very long intro but
- 00:06:36um
- 00:06:37you know it started out very
- 00:06:40lyrical and melodic and nice kind of
- 00:06:43like the idea i had coming to this and
- 00:06:45justice for all right and i'm thinking
- 00:06:47liberty and justice for all what a nice
- 00:06:49concept
- 00:06:50and now
- 00:06:51i'm looking at the words and saying that
- 00:06:53it's
- 00:06:54not talking about
- 00:06:56it's not celebrating liberty and justice
- 00:06:58for all it's halls of justice painted
- 00:07:01green money talking
- 00:07:03power wolves beset your door hear them
- 00:07:05stalking okay so suddenly i realize
- 00:07:08that's why there's this really really
- 00:07:10intense hard
- 00:07:11edge to the music because it seems to be
- 00:07:14more about
- 00:07:18a something that's supposed to be
- 00:07:20justice for all but isn't all right so
- 00:07:22i'm going on now
- 00:07:23[Music]
- 00:07:35okay yeah yeah those those lyrics make
- 00:07:37sense with the music right hammer of
- 00:07:40justice you saw me when i heard the
- 00:07:42intro i'm like oh my goodness right
- 00:07:45so
- 00:07:47that suits the music
- 00:07:49or the music
- 00:07:51actually i would say suits the words
- 00:07:53because
- 00:07:54i wouldn't say that this music really
- 00:07:57stands on its own it needs the words to
- 00:07:59explain it i didn't understand it until
- 00:08:02i started paying attention to the
- 00:08:04what was written
- 00:08:05what was being sung

- 00:08:37it's yeah i i think i am beginning to
- 00:08:40get the idea of the peace
- 00:08:43it's um
- 00:08:44seems to be a sort of a
- 00:08:49cry against injustice rather than
- 00:08:52than talking about something that is
- 00:08:54just
- 00:08:55so
- 00:08:57it's this sort of horrified
- 00:09:00um
- 00:09:03viewing of something that is twisted and
- 00:09:05warped and
- 00:09:06and doing exactly the opposite of what
- 00:09:10it's supposed to be doing
- 00:09:12okay

- 00:09:20that's pretty hardcore

- 00:09:36okay that gets us to the end of
- 00:09:38i can tell by the
- 00:09:40reading the words that's the end of the
- 00:09:41chorus i guess i don't have a lot to say
- 00:09:44about the music other than that it
- 00:09:46suits what's being expressed
- 00:09:49i don't have a lot to say right now but
- 00:09:51i'm going to keep listening okay
- 00:09:54so this is should be coming up to the
- 00:09:56second verse here i think
- 00:09:58[Music]
- 00:10:02uh here's the same thing coming back
- 00:10:04right it's the same same little
- 00:10:06guitar
- 00:10:12that is how they're holding the piece
- 00:10:14together
- 00:10:15in between it seems to be the what i
- 00:10:18would call the glue of the piece right
- 00:10:20so you've got
- 00:10:21the intro
- 00:10:22and that's where they presented that
- 00:10:24glue and i was like again and again and
- 00:10:26again okay now they've set you up to
- 00:10:29recognize that
- 00:10:30and
- 00:10:32it kind of brings you back into
- 00:10:37the
- 00:10:39the starting point

- 00:11:06so i was curious about something and i
- 00:11:08see
- 00:11:09um that they didn't do what i wondered
- 00:11:11if they might do i wondered if they
- 00:11:13might change
- 00:11:15the
- 00:11:16tone the dynamic of the instruments in
- 00:11:19the second verse
- 00:11:22since it's built around words
- 00:11:27maybe the second verse i was thinking
- 00:11:29okay the first verse is this now the
- 00:11:32second verse might have a different
- 00:11:33instrumental support but they didn't
- 00:11:36which lets me know that
- 00:11:38they're looking at the bigger picture
- 00:11:41they're not looking at
- 00:11:44at a a sort of
- 00:11:46instrumental
- 00:11:48shaping of the words where
- 00:11:50every word gets its own nuance it's not
- 00:11:53at all that it's really not what i would
- 00:11:55call nuanced at all
- 00:11:58i mean the guy is just basically yelling
- 00:12:00out these words
- 00:12:01and um the instruments are basically
- 00:12:04screaming out their notes and the drum
- 00:12:06is pounding away and um they're going
- 00:12:09towards the the whole
- 00:12:11idea that the words are expressing
- 00:12:14rather than taking time to say oh this
- 00:12:17word is this and this word will sound
- 00:12:19like that and it's it's a it's a more
- 00:12:23broad picture approach to the idea

- 00:12:55i also noticed something else that that
- 00:12:58i as i'm reading through these words i'm
- 00:12:59noticing that
- 00:13:01these lyrics are so much more
- 00:13:07uh
- 00:13:09developed complex
- 00:13:11than
- 00:13:12the other two pieces i listened to
- 00:13:14before this the one by queen about love
- 00:13:17of my life
- 00:13:18and the other one
- 00:13:20she's leaving home by the beatles these
- 00:13:23words are much more artistic i guess i
- 00:13:25would say they have more they have a lot
- 00:13:27of thought put into them and and how
- 00:13:30they're
- 00:13:32even the vocabulary is richer
- 00:13:36and i guess i like that i always enjoy
- 00:13:40colorful
- 00:13:42expressive multi-shaded multifaceted
- 00:13:45words and poetry and and even in music i
- 00:13:49do right but
- 00:13:50but i appreciate this about these words
- 00:13:53so anyway let's go on

- 00:14:15again this is just kind of the same
- 00:14:19thing
- 00:14:20coming back
- 00:14:22coming back
- 00:14:23and
- 00:14:25it's like the music is
- 00:14:27driving this home it's like it's trying
- 00:14:29to pound it into your minds that
- 00:14:32something is really really really wrong
- 00:14:34it's unbelievable it's shocking it's
- 00:14:36horrifying you know all the words
- 00:14:38they're using right but i i hear that
- 00:14:40the music
- 00:14:42is
- 00:14:42really trying to
- 00:14:46drive that into
- 00:14:49the audience
- 00:14:54[Music]
- 00:15:08okay we're back to that little
- 00:15:11guitar
- 00:15:13figure
- 00:15:17right and now i hear also the same
- 00:15:20interrupted
- 00:15:21um shock moments that i heard at the
- 00:15:24beginning and didn't really know what to
- 00:15:25make of it
- 00:15:26now i see that it makes more sense
- 00:15:29because of what the words are doing and
- 00:15:30it's kind of like
- 00:15:32it's kind of like what the singer was
- 00:15:33saying
- 00:15:35um
- 00:15:36i can't
- 00:15:38believe
- 00:15:41the price
- 00:15:43you pay
- 00:15:44right and and he kind of interrupted
- 00:15:46that as a sort of
- 00:15:49shock moment and i guess the instruments
- 00:15:51are kind of doing the same thing here
- 00:15:53the way they just come to a dead stop in
- 00:15:55the middle of everything
- 00:15:58[Music]
- 00:16:02and then it goes on again
- 00:16:07[Music]
- 00:16:21so
- 00:16:24this is obviously kind of maybe the
- 00:16:25halfway point of the piece as far as the
- 00:16:28the way the piece is ordering itself i
- 00:16:30heard a long introduction
- 00:16:32i've heard two verses so far
- 00:16:35and
- 00:16:36now i'm hearing
- 00:16:39kind of an interlude is what i would
- 00:16:40call it i don't know what what it's
- 00:16:42called in rock music but in classical
- 00:16:44music we call it an interlude when
- 00:16:46there's an instrumental
- 00:16:49section between
- 00:16:51sets of of words that are being sung i
- 00:16:53can tell that this is a longer set here
- 00:16:56because already we're going back to
- 00:16:58repeat the same thing again rather than
- 00:17:00jumping into the next words
- 00:17:03[Music]
- 00:17:11and one other thing
- 00:17:13this is so unfamiliar to me if i were
- 00:17:15listening to something classical i would
- 00:17:17be better able to
- 00:17:19to follow and say all right this is
- 00:17:22identical to what came before but
- 00:17:25i'm not used to listening to this kind
- 00:17:26of percussive
- 00:17:28um
- 00:17:30aggressive sound and
- 00:17:32and it's so overwhelming to me
- 00:17:36psychologically that that i
- 00:17:38i've lost track
- 00:17:40i don't know
- 00:17:42if this is exactly what i heard in the
- 00:17:44intro or if it's a variation of what i
- 00:17:46heard or if it's a development of what i
- 00:17:48heard i'm unable to compare right in
- 00:17:51this moment
- 00:17:52and to
- 00:17:54to
- 00:17:55pull more out of it just because it's so
- 00:17:58new and it's so intense
- 00:18:00so perhaps there's something here that
- 00:18:03i'm missing musically but i'm it'll take
- 00:18:05me a few more lessons to
- 00:18:07and maybe some you know maybe i'll find
- 00:18:10a score somewhere even to look at
- 00:18:13in the second half but that's just
- 00:18:14something that i'm realizing i can't
- 00:18:16quite follow the whole
- 00:18:18scheme of everything and understand it
- 00:18:20fully right now
- 00:18:33somebody likes that little guitar line
- 00:18:35[Music]
- 00:18:40kind of a show-off moment isn't it
- 00:18:43[Music]
- 00:18:55this reminds me of of what we would call
- 00:18:57a cadenza
- 00:18:59in classical music and that's a
- 00:19:02that's a term that we use to describe a
- 00:19:05sort of virtuosic moment where
- 00:19:08maybe the orchestra is
- 00:19:10has been playing along and the soloist
- 00:19:12whether it's a singer or an in or a
- 00:19:14violinist or you know some instrumental
- 00:19:16solo
- 00:19:18they get a moment to show off a bit
- 00:19:21and
- 00:19:22and so the orcis orchestra comes to a
- 00:19:24place where a place where it either
- 00:19:26pauses completely
- 00:19:28or settles into a very
- 00:19:32background supportive role
- 00:19:35and then
- 00:19:36the soloist is given free reign they can
- 00:19:39do whatever they please and you know
- 00:19:42they can show off all their technical
- 00:19:43prowess and whatever else they can do in
- 00:19:45the context of that piece and that
- 00:19:47little bit there with that guitar and
- 00:19:49everything kind of made me think of that
- 00:19:52sort of cadenza moment
- 00:19:54maybe that's how maybe that's how it's
- 00:19:56done here i don't know anyway
- 00:19:59[Music]
- 00:20:11so i'm just guessing as much as i can
- 00:20:14gather from the way the music is working
- 00:20:16out
- 00:20:17that maybe now we're back to this steady
- 00:20:20rhythm
- 00:20:21maybe that's setting us up for the next
- 00:20:23verse i don't know for sure but that's
- 00:20:25just a
- 00:20:27i guess
- 00:20:28[Music]
- 00:20:45we're kind of going in slow motion now
- 00:20:49putting on the brakes
- 00:20:55[Music]
- 00:21:02so instead of being what i thought it
- 00:21:04was setting us up for
- 00:21:06uh the next verse
- 00:21:09it was setting us up for a change in
- 00:21:11pace
- 00:21:12and then
- 00:21:13the percussion and
- 00:21:15the
- 00:21:16band
- 00:21:19kind of stepped on the brakes and slowed
- 00:21:21it down
- 00:21:22and it's not the kind of slowing down
- 00:21:24that loses energy
- 00:21:26it kind of kind of makes the energy just
- 00:21:28all bundle up behind it like it wants to
- 00:21:30go go go but they're just holding it
- 00:21:33back and holding it back
- 00:21:36and it has its own way of intensifying
- 00:21:39the piece
- 00:21:40[Music]
- 00:21:47now it seems like we're picking up speed
- 00:21:49a little bit again
- 00:21:56very controlled i'm impressed i'm
- 00:21:59impressed with the level of control here

- 00:22:18okay now i hear
- 00:22:19this sort of
- 00:22:21repetitive
- 00:22:23pattern coming back is that the setup
- 00:22:25for the next verse i don't know but now
- 00:22:27i'm kind of sitting on the edge of my
- 00:22:29seat of
- 00:22:31what is coming next they managed to
- 00:22:33build in me even though i have no
- 00:22:35understanding of this kind of music and
- 00:22:36i'm kind of
- 00:22:39groping in the dark a bit to try to wrap
- 00:22:41my mind and comprehend what's going on
- 00:22:43here
- 00:22:44they still managed to
- 00:22:46get me to
- 00:22:48be
- 00:22:49waiting on the edge of my seat so to
- 00:22:51speak
- 00:22:52for
- 00:22:53what is coming next and that's a pretty
- 00:22:56pretty good accomplishment

- 00:23:16it's really percussive right here it's
- 00:23:17just
- 00:23:18hardly any guitar okay now the guitar is
- 00:23:20coming back in and it's the same little
- 00:23:23melody right this is what we would call
- 00:23:25a a
- 00:23:27motif or a motif where you have this
- 00:23:29little tiny clip a little tiny sample of
- 00:23:33of sound
- 00:23:38right that is what we call a musical
- 00:23:41motif or musical motive where
- 00:23:44um
- 00:23:46the composer uses that in very creative
- 00:23:48ways sometimes they use it just by raw
- 00:23:50repetition like it seems what's
- 00:23:52happening here
- 00:23:53other times
- 00:23:54they dress it up and get all fancy and
- 00:23:57take it in new directions and stuff like
- 00:23:59that but i am able to recognize that in
- 00:24:01this music and i see that is a
- 00:24:04very
- 00:24:06important part of this musically
- 00:24:09speaking
- 00:24:11[Music]
- 00:24:16and okay and just about when i'd given
- 00:24:19up on the idea of the voice returning it
- 00:24:21just came out of nowhere
- 00:24:24there it is
- 00:24:33[Music]

- 00:24:48well that's pretty intense
- 00:24:50as far as the as far as the
- 00:24:54ideas and the music
- 00:24:57but again i would say that this music is
- 00:25:00doing a very fine job of supporting
- 00:25:04the the expression of the words

- 00:25:20i can't believe i can't believe the
- 00:25:23price
- 00:25:25we pay
- 00:25:30okay and this is coming back well it has
- 00:25:33already come back to
- 00:25:35the
- 00:25:36repeated lines after the verse
- 00:25:39the chorus
- 00:25:41type
- 00:25:42thing and it's

- 00:26:15i don't
- 00:26:17i'm not able to find anything else
- 00:26:22in the music beyond what i've already
- 00:26:24said yet
- 00:26:25i feel like i'm going to need to listen
- 00:26:27to this piece a few more times
- 00:26:30as i prepare for the second half because
- 00:26:32i'm
- 00:26:33this is challenging for me it's it's not
- 00:26:35something that
- 00:26:37really
- 00:26:39sinks in
- 00:26:40it's like
- 00:26:41almost my mind is
- 00:26:44and my comprehension is kind of
- 00:26:47bracing against it trying to back away
- 00:26:49from it
- 00:26:52because it's so different and so foreign
- 00:26:54to what my
- 00:26:56usual
- 00:26:59listening habits are but i'm going to do
- 00:27:02this and i'm going to give it a try and
- 00:27:03i'm going to see what i can come up with
- 00:27:05but i think we're getting close to the
- 00:27:07end so we'll just finish that
- 00:27:14more instrumental
- 00:27:19[Music]
- 00:27:26[Music]
- 00:27:33and another thing that i haven't
- 00:27:35mentioned yet but
- 00:27:36it's the style of the singing
- 00:27:39because
- 00:27:42as a classical musician i keep coming
- 00:27:44back to that i'm used to
- 00:27:46a type of singing where
- 00:27:49where
- 00:27:50the singers are
- 00:27:53cultivating a sound that is designed to
- 00:27:56be very attractive and very
- 00:28:00very expressive this is more like
- 00:28:02somebody just kind of yelling a few
- 00:28:03notes out right
- 00:28:05and
- 00:28:08we find that sometimes in classical
- 00:28:10music for a special effect or or you
- 00:28:13know a small moment
- 00:28:15but
- 00:28:16we don't hear this sort of
- 00:28:20whole song song at screaming volume
- 00:28:23it's just not done
- 00:28:25and
- 00:28:27it's kind of strange to me
- 00:28:39[Music]
- 00:28:51[Music]
- 00:28:55and it cuts off that abruptly okay
- 00:28:59that was a really interesting experience
- 00:29:02for me to listen to this with you and um
- 00:29:07i have some work to do i guess i would
- 00:29:09say that just like the music
- 00:29:12suits
- 00:29:13the idea that the words are expressing
- 00:29:16so also even though i'm so unaccustomed
- 00:29:19to this
- 00:29:20screaming singing
- 00:29:22i think it suits the music too i mean i
- 00:29:24think it suits the words
- 00:29:26the ideas that the words are expressing
- 00:29:28one of the things about
- 00:29:31classical music my background
- 00:29:35is that
- 00:29:39it really a lot of it developed
- 00:29:42in the church you know during the middle
- 00:29:44ages and renaissance and
- 00:29:47baroque era and all of that it was a
- 00:29:49very
- 00:29:51worship oriented although of course not
- 00:29:53all of it was worship oriented but but
- 00:29:55that was a huge part
- 00:29:58of
- 00:29:59the development of music happened in the
- 00:30:01worship context well of course
- 00:30:03um
- 00:30:04in a worship context a lot of what
- 00:30:07you're trying to do is express
- 00:30:09ideas about god
- 00:30:12and
- 00:30:13um being
- 00:30:15the
- 00:30:17developing in the western
- 00:30:20in the western part of the world
- 00:30:23of course it was christianity based and
- 00:30:26the christian ideas about god
- 00:30:29are ones of love and mercy and
- 00:30:31forgiveness and sacrifice and all of
- 00:30:34those things um you know there are some
- 00:30:36parts of it that are also about judgment
- 00:30:38and and justice and that too because
- 00:30:41that's all part of the set of concepts
- 00:30:43that the music is doing but with this
- 00:30:46overarching idea that
- 00:30:48what what the music is attempting to do
- 00:30:51is either to
- 00:30:53express or communicate
- 00:30:56or
- 00:30:57explore
- 00:30:59these concepts
- 00:31:03built around this idea of love both
- 00:31:06both
- 00:31:07humanity is love towards god and god's
- 00:31:09love towards humanity and all that that
- 00:31:12entails in the western church tradition
- 00:31:14and then of course along
- 00:31:16comes the romantic what we call the
- 00:31:19romantic era
- 00:31:21where
- 00:31:22classical music kind of
- 00:31:24broadened out
- 00:31:27beyond the church a bit more than before
- 00:31:30and
- 00:31:33there came to be this focus on
- 00:31:36expressing and exploring
- 00:31:38love
- 00:31:40human to human
- 00:31:41you know there's a lot of songs about
- 00:31:44lovers and lovers lost and or
- 00:31:47or nature and the natural world and and
- 00:31:50exploring
- 00:31:54these natural world
- 00:31:59experiences and and concepts and so
- 00:32:03forth it all has a lot of love in it
- 00:32:05a lot of give and take
- 00:32:09i see that this music is different
- 00:32:12and
- 00:32:13i guess there's a place for it because
- 00:32:16in real life
- 00:32:17it's not all love there are a lot of
- 00:32:19human emotions and experiences
- 00:32:23that people go through all around the
- 00:32:25world
- 00:32:26which are very very hard
- 00:32:29and very brutal and very
- 00:32:33much
- 00:32:35have have absolutely nothing to do
- 00:32:38with love either
- 00:32:41a human to human love or a human to
- 00:32:43divine love or however one might express
- 00:32:45it
- 00:32:46and
- 00:32:47so
- 00:32:48this song itself it's delving into one
- 00:32:51of those
- 00:32:52elements one of those aspects and and
- 00:32:56it's trying to express something that
- 00:32:59needs to be expressed it's trying to
- 00:33:01address something
- 00:33:03that is very real and needs to be
- 00:33:06addressed
- 00:33:07and i can
- 00:33:09there's a there's an important place for
- 00:33:11that and so
- 00:33:13i see how this has a value even though i
- 00:33:15personally struggle to relate to this
- 00:33:17kind of music
- 00:33:19um
- 00:33:20and i am probably doing a very poor job
- 00:33:23of it today
- 00:33:24in this first listen
- 00:33:26but
- 00:33:27i see that there is a value and an
- 00:33:30importance to it and so i'm going to
- 00:33:33take some time
- 00:33:34and
- 00:33:36see what more i can learn about this and
- 00:33:39and delve into it musically artistically
- 00:33:43um
- 00:33:44and and i'll come back in the second
- 00:33:46half and
- 00:33:48let you know what i find
- 00:33:53hi everyone i'm back
- 00:33:55and um i've taken a few days to
- 00:33:58try to dig into this song and
- 00:34:02i have a lot to say and uh
- 00:34:04some things to show you on the piano and
- 00:34:08all kinds of stuff so let's dig right in
- 00:34:10of course the words of the title piece
- 00:34:13are
- 00:34:14are um and justice for all are the final
- 00:34:17four words of the pledge of allegiance
- 00:34:19so
- 00:34:20we all instantly recognize them and we
- 00:34:23associate them with patriotism and the
- 00:34:25high ideals we have for this country i
- 00:34:27found out this song comes from
- 00:34:29metallica's fourth album and serves as
- 00:34:32the title piece so the album itself is
- 00:34:34called and justice for all from what i
- 00:34:37could find out
- 00:34:38they came up with the name and ideas for
- 00:34:40it kind of thought oh that's a cool idea
- 00:34:43and then they went looking for some
- 00:34:45inspiration and it seems like one of the
- 00:34:47things they used
- 00:34:49um
- 00:34:50they watched as they were developing the
- 00:34:52ideas of the piece was a 1979 movie of
- 00:34:56the same name
- 00:34:58in which al pacino played a lawyer who
- 00:35:01realizes that
- 00:35:02the justice system is full of corruption
- 00:35:04and favoritism
- 00:35:05and it kind of helps them develop their
- 00:35:08approach i also found out this album
- 00:35:10showcases some of metallica's most
- 00:35:13complex music
- 00:35:14maybe there are some other
- 00:35:16pieces on it that i should try out and
- 00:35:19and
- 00:35:20so maybe that's coming in the future
- 00:35:22some of the songs including this one
- 00:35:24were so complex
- 00:35:26that the band had a really hard time
- 00:35:29reproducing the sound for their tour in
- 00:35:32support of the album for their live tour
- 00:35:34kirk hammett said in an interview once
- 00:35:36that the band had finished playing this
- 00:35:38song
- 00:35:39and
- 00:35:40one of them said we are never
- 00:35:43playing that song ever again and they
- 00:35:45didn't
- 00:35:46for more than 20 years i guess they
- 00:35:49finally gave another live performance in
- 00:35:512007. this is a long song
- 00:35:54and i didn't realize how unusually long
- 00:35:57it is for its genre until reading about
- 00:36:00it because i'm used to classical
- 00:36:02concerts and we all sit down and listen
- 00:36:04to a piece of music that lasts for 30 or
- 00:36:0640 minutes or or more but
- 00:36:09i found out that that is not how it is
- 00:36:11with rock music
- 00:36:12um in fact i discovered that after the
- 00:36:14first few live performances of this song
- 00:36:18um one of the reasons they gave up the
- 00:36:20idea and said we're never doing that
- 00:36:22again
- 00:36:22is because they realized that after
- 00:36:24about five minutes the live audience
- 00:36:26would get bored and start yawning and be
- 00:36:29ready for it to be over and the song is
- 00:36:31barely half finished of course
- 00:36:33my first listen of it
- 00:36:35i didn't have a chance to be bored
- 00:36:37because i was trying so hard to follow
- 00:36:39and comprehend this unfamiliar music and
- 00:36:42i'll admit this piece
- 00:36:43has been a real challenge and i've had
- 00:36:45to work hard to get into it and to
- 00:36:48understand it so one of the things i
- 00:36:50wanted to talk about was what is it that
- 00:36:52makes a long piece of music work
- 00:36:55is this piece too long really
- 00:36:58or
- 00:36:59does it actually work as a long piece it
- 00:37:02has to do with the architectural design
- 00:37:05of a piece
- 00:37:06okay i do understand now that rock a
- 00:37:10rock concert is has a different purpose
- 00:37:12and atmosphere than a symphony hall but
- 00:37:15music has certain common characteristics
- 00:37:17and requirements regardless of the genre
- 00:37:20so if a piece of music is going to be
- 00:37:22very long
- 00:37:24it requires two things first of all it
- 00:37:26it has to hold hold together meaning
- 00:37:30there has to be some way of making it
- 00:37:32come across as as one
- 00:37:35song one piece of music
- 00:37:38not just a string of separate songs or
- 00:37:40musical ideas that are all patched
- 00:37:43together the second thing it has to keep
- 00:37:45the audience engaged for its entire
- 00:37:47duration
- 00:37:49i'm talking about music that's made for
- 00:37:51listening to
- 00:37:53background music is different
- 00:37:55so
- 00:37:56if we're meant to pay attention the
- 00:37:58music has to engage us
- 00:38:00and it can do that either by pulling us
- 00:38:03deeply into an experience an atmosphere
- 00:38:08a place
- 00:38:09or
- 00:38:10it can take us on an interesting journey
- 00:38:13or perhaps both in classical music my
- 00:38:16background
- 00:38:19we often do this by developing a musical
- 00:38:22idea it's kind of like taking some raw
- 00:38:24building material let's say i have a
- 00:38:25whole stack of lumber and
- 00:38:29cutting it into different shapes and
- 00:38:31fastening it together at different
- 00:38:32angles it's all the same material
- 00:38:35but it's presented in so many different
- 00:38:37ways and has so many different
- 00:38:41so much potential for manifesting itself
- 00:38:44in different ways
- 00:38:46that it stays interesting if it has a
- 00:38:48good designer and here's a little piano
- 00:38:50example of what i mean so the song i'm
- 00:38:52going to use to illustrate this
- 00:38:56idea of
- 00:38:57a theme is a sonatina by clementi it's a
- 00:39:01pretty popular one for students because
- 00:39:03it's fairly uh approachable and easy to
- 00:39:06grasp the concepts so here is the first
- 00:39:09theme that we have in this sonata you
- 00:39:10might even recognize it if you've
- 00:39:12studied music or had anyone take piano
- 00:39:14lessons
- 00:39:18it's a lively little recognizable snip
- 00:39:21of sound in this sonatina
- 00:39:24that happens multiple times
- 00:39:26and then it is developed
- 00:39:28in different ways so a little bit later
- 00:39:30in the piece it sounds like this
- 00:39:36it's still recognizable but it's shifted
- 00:39:38a bit to have a little different quality
- 00:39:40and then even later it sounds like this
- 00:39:46basically the same thing is the opening
- 00:39:48but lower
- 00:39:49then
- 00:39:50it changes again
- 00:39:55and it's different yet again we call
- 00:39:58this thematic development
- 00:40:00and
- 00:40:02in this way we are able to get
- 00:40:05myriad different kinds of musical moods
- 00:40:07and colors and
- 00:40:08experiences simply by creatively using
- 00:40:11some small theme
- 00:40:14and so
- 00:40:16it holds together as one single piece of
- 00:40:19music it has common
- 00:40:21ground of course the longer a song is
- 00:40:24the more thematic material is needed to
- 00:40:26keep it engaging so composers often use
- 00:40:29two or even more themes in a single
- 00:40:32piece of music the sonatina does it
- 00:40:34and we see exactly that happening also
- 00:40:37in and justice for all and justice for
- 00:40:39all has two main themes
- 00:40:42plus a third one which is kind of an
- 00:40:44elaboration of theme number two let me
- 00:40:46show you what they are
- 00:40:48so the first thing we hear is what we
- 00:40:51get at the beginning of the song and it
- 00:40:53starts out like this
- 00:41:04and so on you recognize that and you'll
- 00:41:07hear it over and over repeated multiple
- 00:41:10times in the first portion of and
- 00:41:12justice for all then a bit later we get
- 00:41:15to the second theme the second theme
- 00:41:17sounds like
- 00:41:19well it's kind of tricky because i'm on
- 00:41:21the piano and the piano doesn't do
- 00:41:24things that the electric guitar does so
- 00:41:26you'll see you'll feel like it's kind of
- 00:41:28lacking something but still you can get
- 00:41:30the basic idea so the second theme is
- 00:41:32setup with this little rhythmic
- 00:41:34preparation that sounds a bit like this
- 00:41:38okay
- 00:41:39and then immediately after that here
- 00:41:41comes the second theme which goes
- 00:41:43[Music]
- 00:41:46and it goes back and forth between that
- 00:41:49theme
- 00:41:55and so forth and you'll hear that
- 00:41:59over and over in the piece now what we
- 00:42:01call the third theme
- 00:42:03is kind of as i said uh
- 00:42:05[Music]
- 00:42:07an elaborate
- 00:42:08variation of that second theme it's up
- 00:42:11here and it sounds like this
- 00:42:14[Music]
- 00:42:16and you'll hear it you'll hear this one
- 00:42:18down here
- 00:42:21several times and then the higher sounds
- 00:42:24come in
- 00:42:26and so forth of course again
- 00:42:29it's got a little more warp and
- 00:42:31and
- 00:42:33ornamentation happening in the guitar
- 00:42:35itself but you'll recognize if you
- 00:42:38listen to the piece
- 00:42:39those
- 00:42:40themes now
- 00:42:42unlike the clementi sonatina
- 00:42:46this song doesn't really develop the
- 00:42:49themes it uses them
- 00:42:51more like a motif basically exactly as
- 00:42:53they were first stated simply repeating
- 00:42:56and reinforcing them perhaps layering
- 00:42:59more instruments
- 00:43:01that creates a sense of unity as well
- 00:43:03and since this is not an instruments
- 00:43:06only piece but a song
- 00:43:08so that the main message of the piece is
- 00:43:10actually conveyed through its words we
- 00:43:13don't expect or need the musical ideas
- 00:43:15to be developed and explored like
- 00:43:18in a
- 00:43:19sonatina or sonata or symphony but
- 00:43:23repeating the same motif over and over
- 00:43:26and over can get very dull and it needs
- 00:43:29some surprise elements
- 00:43:31to keep it fresh which is just what
- 00:43:33happens in this song not only do you
- 00:43:35have the transition times between the
- 00:43:37themes
- 00:43:38which grab our attention
- 00:43:40and help us to move smoothly
- 00:43:43as i said before it should sound
- 00:43:45unified not just tacked together the
- 00:43:48transition
- 00:43:49moments help us to move smoothly from
- 00:43:52one theme to the other they also give us
- 00:43:54something interesting to kind of break
- 00:43:56up the monotony but we also find the
- 00:43:58long elaborate guitar solos after the
- 00:44:02second verse
- 00:44:03which
- 00:44:04might at first seem
- 00:44:07like they're coming out of nowhere these
- 00:44:09solos break the monotony but
- 00:44:12because they built the solo in such a
- 00:44:14way that it uses the same harmonies as
- 00:44:17we hear in the chorus
- 00:44:18it still
- 00:44:19holds together and feels like it belongs
- 00:44:23to the piece
- 00:44:24so it's not like just a different song
- 00:44:26dropped into the center
- 00:44:29of
- 00:44:30stuff that doesn't really relate how
- 00:44:32does all of this contribute to the
- 00:44:34effectiveness of the song to me it seems
- 00:44:36like the repetitiveness
- 00:44:38without development
- 00:44:40is actually a very eloquent way of
- 00:44:42conveying what it's like to attempt to
- 00:44:45seek for justice in a warped system it's
- 00:44:47like
- 00:44:48no escape is opening itself to you you
- 00:44:51cannot find a way out it just goes on
- 00:44:54and on and on
- 00:44:57the assault gets closer
- 00:44:59and then the solo sections where there
- 00:45:00are really
- 00:45:01they're really two sections here the
- 00:45:03first builds into a wild frantic
- 00:45:06screaming flailing about
- 00:45:09when you realize
- 00:45:10that the system is so stacked against
- 00:45:13you that there is no way out in the
- 00:45:16imagery of the song
- 00:45:18the victim is raging and grasping at
- 00:45:21straws and thrashing and fighting but
- 00:45:24cannot resist the aggressor and and that
- 00:45:26is the moment at which musically the
- 00:45:29rape is accomplished the second section
- 00:45:31returns to the first thing
- 00:45:33remember the theme at the very opening
- 00:45:35of the piece that lilting beautiful
- 00:45:38melody where it was setting us up to
- 00:45:40think of and justice for all like it's a
- 00:45:43beautiful concept but now the same theme
- 00:45:46comes back
- 00:45:48and unlike how it was presented at the
- 00:45:51beginning
- 00:45:52it now
- 00:45:54appears as a more mechanical character
- 00:45:57and each repetition of it as it builds
- 00:46:00and builds is more relentless more
- 00:46:03brutal
- 00:46:04more of a bulldozer quality and so when
- 00:46:07the third verse arrives
- 00:46:10the victim is displayed as completely
- 00:46:12destroyed while the machine continues
- 00:46:16without a backward glance it is entirely
- 00:46:19unaffected by what has occurred
- 00:46:21um it has no emotional
- 00:46:24impact
- 00:46:26on this
- 00:46:27this um system
- 00:46:29and that is conveyed by the fact that
- 00:46:32the musical motifs
- 00:46:34in the third verse
- 00:46:35[Music]
- 00:46:37are exactly the same as what we heard
- 00:46:38before there's no change in their
- 00:46:40character there is no difference is the
- 00:46:42song too long that depends on why you
- 00:46:45are listening to it if you want an easy
- 00:46:47listening piece something to you know
- 00:46:49add to your fun maybe
- 00:46:52i don't know dance to or have a party
- 00:46:54around or something it's certainly going
- 00:46:57to drag on too long for you
- 00:46:59and if you're going to a live rock
- 00:47:01concert where you want this sort of
- 00:47:03adrenaline rush and fun time
- 00:47:06i can see why it doesn't really work
- 00:47:08there but
- 00:47:09if you are looking for an eloquent
- 00:47:11portrayal of an experience that is
- 00:47:14very unfortunately
- 00:47:16felt by many
- 00:47:17possibly even by you or someone you know
- 00:47:19if you want to glimpse into what it is
- 00:47:21to be treated unjustly by the very
- 00:47:24systems
- 00:47:25which were established to protect and
- 00:47:28defend and exonerate the innocent and to
- 00:47:30treat the guilty fairly and justly then
- 00:47:33the length of the piece is not only
- 00:47:35acceptable
- 00:47:36but also critical because the length
- 00:47:39itself
- 00:47:40is part of
- 00:47:43this
- 00:47:44picture these experiences don't happen
- 00:47:47in such a way that a person can get
- 00:47:49through it quickly and move on
- 00:47:51instead they are often interminable and
- 00:47:55often they don't even end until the
- 00:47:57person is dead you know the grave and
- 00:48:00the bees kind of ends at the sudden stop
- 00:48:02like it's
- 00:48:05right it doesn't end until you're dead
- 00:48:07how would i grade this piece
- 00:48:10uh musically
- 00:48:12if i'm judging this on
- 00:48:14musical merits alone
- 00:48:16it definitely has some room for
- 00:48:20musical development i guess metallica
- 00:48:23kind of sensed it themselves
- 00:48:25i don't think it's only because it was
- 00:48:27hard to present in concert i think
- 00:48:29i think they understood that musically
- 00:48:33it has some challenges so on musical
- 00:48:35merits alone
- 00:48:38i'm going to give it a score around five
- 00:48:41or six
- 00:48:43it's not bad but
- 00:48:45as we've talked about this idea of how
- 00:48:48long music works
- 00:48:50you can see why
- 00:48:51it's got some challenges there now the
- 00:48:53lyrics i haven't really talked about the
- 00:48:54lyrics a whole lot
- 00:48:56the theme is crystal clear
- 00:48:59and they choose the best way
- 00:49:02to point out this theme of corruption
- 00:49:06not only corruption but corruption of
- 00:49:09justice the greenback determines what is
- 00:49:11just the dollar writes the reality
- 00:49:14justice is portrayed as a lady and the
- 00:49:16dimension and brutality of the
- 00:49:18corruption is revealed by using the
- 00:49:20image of rape
- 00:49:22justice is lost justice is raped justice
- 00:49:25is gone and then they go on winning is
- 00:49:28all describing a society which is
- 00:49:31seeking no truth meaning the scale of
- 00:49:34values is corrupt it's it's reversed
- 00:49:37the the truth means nothing
- 00:49:40while winning is the ultimate goal even
- 00:49:42if the means for that are corrupt so now
- 00:49:45this kind of reminds me of a line from
- 00:49:48from the chernobyl hbo series um
- 00:49:51i watched that some time back and
- 00:49:53and there's this line that has stuck
- 00:49:56with me every lie we tell
- 00:49:58incurs a debt to the truth
- 00:50:01sooner or later that debt is paid
- 00:50:04metallica
- 00:50:06doesn't seem to see any way out from
- 00:50:08this for them the present as well as the
- 00:50:11future is so grim
- 00:50:13that at the end of the day
- 00:50:15nothing can save you the poetry is quite
- 00:50:21rich in its vocabulary i i really
- 00:50:24enjoyed
- 00:50:25the
- 00:50:26creativity and the depth of it
- 00:50:30i wouldn't call it
- 00:50:33highly
- 00:50:35artistic
- 00:50:36but it was very good so i'm going to
- 00:50:38give it a score of seven now
- 00:50:40interpretation this is tricky for me
- 00:50:42because um
- 00:50:45again i'm not used to
- 00:50:47assessing this kind of music
- 00:50:50but i would say after having spent some
- 00:50:52time and listening to it over and over
- 00:50:54and really trying to understand the
- 00:50:56piece
- 00:50:57the interpretation and the communication
- 00:50:59of the message is highly effective i'm
- 00:51:02not saying i like listening to it but
- 00:51:04i'm saying that metallica
- 00:51:07masterfully achieves its goal the voice
- 00:51:09and the instruments work together so
- 00:51:11well
- 00:51:12that the meaning of it
- 00:51:14the message really hits home and then
- 00:51:17overall how does it all work together
- 00:51:20everything works together in this piece
- 00:51:22to create the
- 00:51:23both the emotional and the cerebral
- 00:51:26impact
- 00:51:27even the weaknesses of the music end up
- 00:51:30contributing to the overall
- 00:51:31effectiveness of the work as a whole
- 00:51:35so that all together it is an
- 00:51:37outstanding song and i'm going to give
- 00:51:38it a total score of 8. do i like it
- 00:51:43well let me rephrase that do i enjoy it
- 00:51:46no
- 00:51:48personally
- 00:51:50i find this kind of music incredibly
- 00:51:52stressful and fatiguing to listen to but
- 00:51:55that doesn't mean i can't appreciate it
